Speaker 1 (00:38):
The Patriots with a thrilling twenty to twelve victory Week
two to move to two and o on the preseason.
Guys love it, sweating it out right down So the end.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
That was a little scary at the end.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Welcome into the Patriots Postgame Show presented by DraftKings, And man,
that was that was quite the roller coaster there right
at the end. I'm like, they're not going to make
them come back out and play another fight.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
I think you got thin. It's the preseason. Like, guys,
let's wrap it up all right.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
We got we got the point, we got the point.
You know, we're moving right along, but a lot to
take in from this game, and uh, you know, I know,
before we get to the good, the bad and the injured, ab,
I just want to you know, overall, what was your
what was your takeaway from this game tonight?
Speaker 5 (01:14):
Well, I thought after five days on the road, I
was really questioning the energy of how they would come
out today and would they play hard and would they
have that effort and finish that we know is a
non negotiable for Mike Rabel. And to me, they they
checked that.
Speaker 6 (01:28):
Boss. I thought they passed that test.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
And I can tell you I don't play in these games, duh,
But I can tell you from experience, when you're away
for a week and you have a couple of joint
practices and you're you're not at home and all that
kind of stuff, by the time the preseason game rolls around,
it's kind of like, oh, man, do we have to
really do this? And I was maybe a tiny big
concern that we would get that today and we didn't,
(01:52):
which I think is a real testament to just all
of it, just the culture and and what Mike Rabel
is building here with the Patriots.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
That good energy what about your teach. What's today?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Well, we want to talk about, you know, building off
last week. I think they did. And also we talked
about our keys of the game. I thought they did
pretty well on all of ours. So it's exciting to see.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah. Absolutely, well, let's let's not waste any time. Let's
get right into the good, the bad, and the injured.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Now it's time for the good.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Pretty good, pretty pretty good, the bad.
Speaker 7 (02:22):
And the injured. Ah ah, you are right guy, all.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Right, it's the good, the bad, the injured. Again. The
show is presented by DraftKings, so I guess this is
presented by DraftKings as well. I got to start us
off because I think the first one's just obvious. I'm
gonna take it. And I mean, Evan, don't get mad
at me, but e Fton Chisholm.
Speaker 6 (02:42):
I am mad.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
A holy goodness, I mean, this guy. We talked about
it on the pregame show and I mentioned some of
the special teams work, but powering through tacklers. I mean,
I think in that first one he broke like four
or five different tacklers, pick up the first down, you know,
multiple picked up a touchdown. He was excellent, and the
(03:04):
guys on the broadcast said maybe he got a spot
on the team tonight. I tend to agree with them.
I don't know how you can't let this guy get
let him get away playing tough, playing strong, I mean,
just making tough catches and picking up extra yards. What
more tease can you ask? I'm ft chism.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
I mean, I'm looking at my notes here and there's
a bunch of scribbles because it was like, oh, he's.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Three for three for three catches for forty yards.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Then it's like five catches for fifty and he ended
up I think was six for seventy one a touchdown.
Correct me if I'm wrong there, But like, wow, we
talk about separating yourself from him, big right that he
did it today?
Speaker 1 (03:34):
He did so.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
He had one drive. This one driver's shown right now.
Four catches for sixty three yards in the touchdown, all
on the same drive.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
And that was the drives.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
He had gains of eleven thirty three seven and then
the touchdown was twelve yards out, all on that same drive.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I mean, what more is there to say? I don't know.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
I mean, the guys the guy's good, like he's on
the team. His ability to break tackles is just I
mean these catches on third down, breaking multiple tackles. He
ran away from some coverage on that crossing route too,
which was good to see. For eleven yards of thirty
three yard one kind of opened up for him and
he was open in a coverage bus But.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
This one, Yeah, they all play, I mean, just to
get those extra three yards to get the first down.
That's what impressed me most and continues. You look at him.
Not an imposing guy. I think he's about six feet.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
One two three.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
I mean live six guys tried to get the extension
for them zone.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
You know, it's just the physicality of him. We talked
about slot receivers in the past, maybe not the most
physical guys. And then I mean, I hate to say
that about Julian Edelman because that guy was tough and physical, right,
but you never really saw Julian Edelman and Wes Welker,
Danny Avindolo, Troy Brown, etcetera. I ever like run through
guys like this, and that to me is what stands
out and makes him seem like he might be a
(04:49):
little bit of a special guy, especially in this offense.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, it's a great point, like and Vrabel brought it
up to his play strength, but both at the top
of their rout and after the catch was something that
caught the head coach's eye. As you know practice in
the preseason. Here is war on a little bit. He's
maybe not as quick in a foam booth as those
other guys that you listed off Deuce or like a
Pop Douglas. You might not have that like Jitterbug completely,
(05:14):
but he's got that ability to run after the catch
with that play strength, and certainly has a nice knack
for finding soft spots and zones and things like that too.
So look at this point, I don't know how you
have him off your roster. Like, if you do, then
I don't know what you're looking at.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I got a phrase for you. Tell me what you
think high volume slot receiver. This is this what would
because nothing against Pop Douglas. I think he's been excelling.
He's a great piece to have. I love him. But
at the same time, it seems like Chisholm built up
a little bit more. Maybe you can handle some of
the pounding. I say that as he's probably gonna pop
up on another one of these lists later, which is
something to watch. But really encouraging from Ethn Chism.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
I mean they were just locking in on him and
it's almost like the whole stadium knew they were gonna
go to it, right, they just kept doing it and
he kept catching it.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
So what can you complain about there?
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Impressive? Well, congrats Ethon Chisholm for your first appearce. I
don't think he made it on the upsolas week, but tis,
why don't you weigh in with your.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
First good okay going off that I know Paul mentioned
it last week, but just players running hard, running backs,
just every single guy who touched the ball effort, just
pushing through and really just running hard, like not afraid
of contact, not wanting to go down. We saw it
from all of them. Henderson scored so love seeing that.
It's really what Vrabel's and stilling in this offense.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
Yeah, I'll stick on the same.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
I just said Henderson's touchdown run as a good just individually,
only from eight yards out. But you saw the patience
I think was the biggest thing, Like it looked like
nothing was there and he just remained patient behind the
line of scrimmage there and then was able to really
burst And I thought that will Campbell had a decent
block on the touchdown run too. Is one guy that
(06:44):
seemed to really hold his own on the touchdown run there.
But you're able to just see that speed and acceleration
and that contact balance again, another guy that can finish
through some contact by Traveon Henderson. I just thought that
was a standout play in the game.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
And also I've seen enough he doesn't need to play anymore.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
I hope he'd be able to play that he keeps coming.
Speaker 6 (07:03):
We cross off.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
It's not the good, the bad, and the injury. It's
not easy. We make it look at you, but it's not.
Next guy for me is Anthony Jennings, who had a
monster second half and we've talked plenty about him being
maybe on the bubble, maybe not being a scheme fit,
whatever it might be. But I continue to look at
Anthony Jennings and this has been along the case for me,
and there's one of your sacks right here. It's just
(07:27):
such a stout guy on the edge, like the guy
can play in the NFL. And if it were ever
not work out here, I have no doubt that he's
going to pick up and be a quality addition to
another team that maybe he would fit a little better
on but tonight he made his case in the second half.
I think that's what a guy like him has to do,
show his value, hand in the dirt, getting after the
passer like you saw right there, showing that versatility that
(07:48):
you know Mike Rabel likes on that left side of
the line with Harold Landry kind of leading the way.
But just a great night for Anthony Jennings, and I
think it comes at the right time.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Yeah, it looked like varsity against JV was out there
in this I can have man amongst boys. I just
I look at Anthony Jennings and I guess he's not
Lawrence Taylor. Like I'm not saying that, But at the
same time, I still feel like he's a good enough
football player that if your scheme doesn't fit Anthony Jennings,
then I'm starting to like wonder well. I mean, like
he's an NFL player, Like he's got to be a
(08:17):
role for him somewhere on this football team. And even
if you have injuries at that spoting, if you don't
feel like he's a starter because you have Landry and
you have Kean White and you have Chase on who
you like a little bit more for the scheme. If
one of those guys gets hurt, wouldn't you much rather
have Anthony Jennings as the backup edge rusher there instead
of maybe one of these rookies that hasn't really shown
(08:37):
as much. So I understand that maybe there's like a
trade market for him or something exists there. But I
keep coming back to with Jennings, I just think he's
too good of a football player to be playing when
he's playing, So find a role for him, like, figure
out something for him to do.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
I agree with Evan.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
We'll probably talk about with some other veterans, but veterans
playing later in a preseason game you get low worried.
But we talked about Chisen making the most of his moment.
I think Jennings did today too.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Absolutely. All right, tis who who you got next?
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Let's see good, good good. I got mac Hollins.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
You know, he didn't really didn't really do much last week,
but he had two big plays. I know we talked about.
He had a similar play in the joint practice, the
toe tap on the side. He caught it there, made
himself big, caught it. You could even hear the people
on the sideline Saints. He just did that in practice,
so you know, talk about what he had a couple
of plays, but he made two big ones there, so
I get a good one he did.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
I said it on the broadcast. I think people are
sleeping on him a little bit. And Josh clearly has
a use for him, a role for him. He's got
a role in the offense to play, and every time
he plays with Drake May, Drake May is looking his way,
especially right here as you're seeing on this play down
the sideline. It was where I think it was back
to back plays, you know on Thursday against the Vikings
(09:44):
where they didn't hit it. It throws a little off.
They went right back to it. I think we're gonna
see a lot of Mac Hollins today. Would you think
of him? Yeah, Matt Collins.
Speaker 5 (09:51):
I just I feel like there's this stigma against him
because he's not Kyle Williams or Kashan Booty and the
fact that he's not one of these or I can
throw Javon Baker in that mix as well, because he's
not one of these young receivers that everybody's really jazzed
up about and they want to get hit those guys
playing time and everyone's hoping. We're all hoping that Kyle
Williams is the real deal and eventually maybe this role
(10:12):
is his down the line, But as of right now,
Matt Collins has been the most consistent player in that role,
and he brings a lot to the table from a
catch radius and a size standpoint that some of these
other guys don't. I mentioned in the pregame show, like
who's the ball winner down the field in this offense,
Like who's the guy that you can throw it up
to and have him go get it? And we've seen
Matt Collins be able to be that guy. His run
(10:34):
blocking is something I've also brought up a lot in
the past, So it might be a for now thing,
and I think that's what we should all look at
it as, because I know there's people that are just
like hating on this guy for really no reason other
than the fact that he's not a guy they just drafted,
you know, or something.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Laid on like five teams. Yeah, I mean I get it.
I mean I said it till on blue in the
face when we were out there in Vegas. It's like,
this guy's impressive. He has a big receiver, he's physical,
he can run, So I just continue to think he's
going to have a significant role in this offense this year.
Who's up next for you with?
Speaker 5 (11:08):
Okay, so I'm gonna get a little specific. I'm going
to say Drake May on third down. I thought that
he had two really good plays on third down. One
was to the aforementioned Matt Collins and the honey hole there.
But what I really liked about that rep in particular
is that you know, the Vikings were in a four
man rush and they dropped out into his own coverage
and Drake remained.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
Poised behind the line of scrimmage like he.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Didn't have pressure. So he kind of felt it out
and waited it out, and you can see it here
on on our TV. There bought some time. And the
biggest thing I would say here is that he remained
a passer.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
And this is an area.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
Of emphasis for them all summer long, is that they
don't want Drake May just taking off running and scrambling.
They want him to remain a passer. And he kept
his eyes down the field, found Matt Collins there along
the sideline, who kept his feet and bounds nicely and
made the catch, But that to me has got to
be something that Rabel and Josh McDaniels were pretty about
(12:00):
that he did that. And then later on in the game,
I thought he checked into that third down run. I
think Devin or Jason mentioned it on the broadcast. Third
and ten, they kind of emptied out with the two
high safeties and Drake May checked into a draw to
Trayvon Henderson, who picked up the first down on the ground.
So two really good reps on third down for Drake May.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
Who started a little bit rough. But I thought that
that he finished well.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yes, skied a couple of them, but I just continue
to be so impressed with how Drake looks in the pocket.
And I thought the protection was pretty good today. You know,
people are like ready to jump off the bridge about
the protection based on what happened in Thursday's practice. I
think today you saw that they could be pretty good.
Speaker 8 (12:38):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
I still don't know if I've seen enough out of
Drake in the passing offense, Like I feel like I
was left still wanting a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Such a small as seven, but you can only do
so much with that many throws four for seven right.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Right, But just his he looked so comfortable in the pocket.
He looked so calm consistently, and we've seen that since
the spring. I thought coming into this year that there
might be some bumps in the road. You know, he
might not see it the way Josh does immediately. But
I think Drake has been really excellent this year. As
far as the poise, I hope it starts to translate
down field a little bit. But I had, you know,
(13:09):
I was a little hesitant, I said, Drake Procket presence.
So I was similar to you where I was like,
kind of like Drake, but you know, a little bit specific.
Drake not a great start, like you said, sale to
a couple throws, but I continue to be impressed with
him and excited about what he's doing.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Yeah, it happened last week.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
The first drive not so hot, maybe some bus legs there,
as my coach used to say, but he was able
to finish off the drive strong and then you pull
him after it. I mean, that's what a preseason game's about,
right there. But to go back to what you said,
my key to the game was trench trust, and I
think the offensive line did pretty well.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
There were no sacks.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Actually, the last play maybe a sack would be good
because the clock would have kept running, but we wanted
the guys to stay clean, and they did so.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
I was wondering that though. Is I wonder if that's
a coaching point with you know, with Woodbridge, if like
you should have just taken the sack to keep the
cock clock running to get to the two minute warning
instead of throwing it away. You know you're losing maybe
a handful of yards. Well, we'll get to something.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
It might be a point on the bat, but quickly
does not wrap up this Drake thing. I thought the
wheel route to Travon Henderson was also really good throw
It just was a nice play. Now, my mentions told
me that it was DPI. I don't I'd have to
go back and watch the replay. But regardless, I thought
that he put it right there on Trevon Henderson and
then the throwaway his last pass of the game that
(14:18):
he had. I watch it on the dots on Next
Gen and he has Kyle Williams in the middle of
the field, but he looks open, but he's rolling to
his left and Rookie Drake probably just rips that right.
He's rolling to his left. He's gonna throw a cross
body back into the middle of the field, and to me,
that would have been like a rookie mistake, like a no, no,
yes type of situation. Best case scenario, makes a highlight play.
(14:41):
Worst case scenario, it's going the other way, right, And
I thought the throwaway was maybe a point of kind
of development for Drake, like, let's not you know, throw
back in the middle of the field, Like you can
see right here if he unloads that to Kyle Williams,
he's looking in the middle of the field, he wants
to do it, and he makes the wise, veteran and
savvy play, let's throw it away, and just like last
(15:03):
week on the strip sack, let's not turn it over
and let's punt the ball and let's play defense. And
it was exactly It was just maybe a tiny little
sliver of growth. I'm not going to try to make it.
I don't want to make too big a deal out
of it, but I thought that that was a notable play.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Nice moving on here. I got Marcus Jones with that
punt return, just a little reminder of what a weapon
he is, sixty two yarder given the giving the team
a little bit of a boost he continues to be
a really really dangerous punk returner and a big bonus.
Now you're looking at you feel pretty good about the
kickoff return team, and now you're looking at, well, we
already got Marcus Jones as a punk returner. It seems like,
(15:39):
you know, we could have some pretty good special teams
this year.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yeah, I mean, dude, I actually had special teams as
a whole, minus obviously the last kick return. That's our
kick return that's later in the game. But I thought
special teams was pretty good all around. I mean what
we had the missed field goal and then that seven
yard right, I'm not going to seven exactly, but I
thought they were pretty good overall. Marcus Jones obviously with
the big kick return there.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
Yeah, that kickoff return was well blocked or the punt return.
Excuse me, that's a that's a wall scheme, like so
they have like everybody kind of sets up the cutback
lane for him, and Marcus Jones hits the cut.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Back really a really good.
Speaker 5 (16:11):
Block by Jamichael Hasty, and I think they highlighted this
on the broadcast. Jamichael Hasty can't block back into his
own goal line. That's a penalty to a legal block,
so he like almost like just runs a pick, like
he just kind of puts his butt into it a
little bit and just sort of gets in the way
of that last defender who had a chance to get
Marcus before he turned the corner. So that's just a
(16:32):
savvy veteran play by Jamichael Hasty, who I don't know
if he's got a spot on this team. He came
in late for training camp. He was obviously here last year.
But that's one of those plays that if he blocks
that forty two there back into the end zone, that's
going to be a penalty and that thing is going
to be coming back. Ideally you'd like to see him
beat the punter, but I don't think.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
About the room there.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
Yeah here in exactly what I was about to say.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
I thought maybe he could have cut it back in
the middle, but watching the replay again, it's pretty clear
that he was he ran out of room there.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Well, you said, Jamichael Hasty, I got him on the
good list too, you know, for a guy that just
came in, he was around here last year. I think
he made it in two years. He's been around here
practice squad. Kind of a guy. But to come in
and you know, eleven rushes forty seven yards, finding a
way to contribute, and you know, also tripping in a
catch for five yards. These are the kind of games
where you need a running back like that. But he
(17:23):
looks professional. He's made some nice cuts.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Not so much there, maybe that until he's done it before.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Right, but just a pro. You know, you can tell
that this guy's played in the league before, and you know,
I wouldn't be surprised even though he's come in a
little late. You know, I know Lan Larrison was on
the radar early on in camp. He got hurt kind
of opened the door for Hasty. But these are the
kind of guys you need, especially in the preseason. I'm
sure we'll get a ton of work again on Thursday night,
and maybe the kind of guy that you keep around
(17:48):
again on the practice squad and you know that if
you got to call him up or that he can deliver.
So Michael Hasty, welcome to the Uplist. I always called
the uplist. People yell at me for that good list
because the way I write this thing, I'll try to
be better.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
I we got tease, I got the defense as a whole.
I mean, no touchdowns a couple interceptions, Carlton Davis had
a big pass breakup, Kobe Minor was making some plays
there and you know, it was really a bend, don't break,
and you know there's something Vikings gone to the red zone,
but they were still able to hold them off.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
So I think you gott give them props there.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Yeah, I like, I just like the energy that they
came out with, especially he saw I think Milton Williams
with an early pressure. You know that those were the
things that they were doing on the first day of
these joint practices to really disrupt the timing of the
Vikings offense. And again they're going against the backups now,
so it's you know, we're not going to the super
Bowl just yet. But I thought that they showed more
like they were in that first practice. Then the second
(18:38):
practice came out with a little bit of something to prove.
Again no Christian Barmore continue to manage him. But overall,
I like what I saw from the d the effort
chase on there, coming through with it with it, you know,
a pressure that that helped force the interception. So yeah,
good good night for the defense, especially after everyone was
ready to you know again jump off the bridge, so
that too.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
I didn't see any tight ends going crazy against him.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
No, not to night. That's good.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
Speaking of all of that, just last one here was
Alex Austin. We just showed his interception, but I thought
the coverage rep out of the slot on the target
in the end zone was even better than the interception.
Just really but like textbook man coverage just smothered his guy.
I was really impressed by that his play there, and
I still wonder like if could he be the slot
(19:23):
corner in this defense and maybe be that big nickel
that they've been looking for guard some tight ends to
every once in a while when you have like a
more dynamic pass catching tight end, if they go up
against a guy like that, you know, Carlton Davis, Christian
Gonzales on the outside. Is Alex Austin starting to get
into that conversation, especially in certain matchups to play over
Marcus Jones in the slot. So you see there, you know,
(19:45):
just the leverage, the technique that he has on the
play is just textbook exactly how you want to play
it from a trail position. So overall, I just continue
to be really impressed all summer long by Alex Austin.
I think he's been one of their more consistent players.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Yeah, I had him up too. I mean, he's just
consistently around the ball. I think that second call doesn't
seem like it should have been on him. I think
maybe that that was all.
Speaker 6 (20:04):
Oh yeah, I wanted to five.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
That was I don't Yeah, that was weird. You could
you could see what Mike Rabel thought of that call. Yeah,
we'll take it back. Yeah, don't don't read lips. I
do have a couple others, you know, kind of going
down the depth start. But Kyle Williams. I put Kyle
Williams on. We talked a lot about him, you know,
coming through with three catches twenty four yards all three
of his targets. Took a shot in the face. Hope
he's not concussive, he though, how long do it still?
Speaker 6 (20:26):
I have some takes on that. Well, he's on the bad.
Not for Kyle Williams, Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
For the hit itself. Yeah, but I just I like
seeing him get some action, start to get going a
little bit. Hopefully this isn't an injury situation that's going
to set him back, and then he can build off
of these three three catches he had tonight.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Keeps getting open, right. That's a big thing with him,
is that the box score production we thought was going
to keep coming. He had three for twenty four, I
want to say, before he got hurt. So the targets
and the catches were coming for him today with Kyle Williams,
and if he doesn't get hurt in this game, maybe
he had that big game that I thought he was
going to have in pregames. So I really thought that
he played well in the limited time that we saw
(21:05):
him out there.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
So that was really good to see it.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
And I loved seeing those those little dig routes off
play action back from McDaniels right, get that second level
pulled up and hit him right behind it.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
So this is just we'll get to it.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
We'll get to it.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
But yeah, in general, I just I thought Kyle Williams
played well in his in his snaps too, it seemed
like it was a lot of Baker Williams. Chisholm was
sort of that next group of receivers after the starters
came out of the game. So the coaching staff is
seeing it the exact same way all of us are seeing.
It's those six or seven guys that are going to
be here, and they just got to sort out exactly
(21:40):
if they're going to keep six or seven anything else.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
He's non Kyle Williams, but I got shout out Cole
Father and him. I mean he gave the big down
pick up Evan ar talking. He was lining up a
full back for a little so maybe something keep an
eye on there.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Yeah, guy who maybe providing some depth, trying to find
that blocking tight end perhaps fullback role. Right. I saw
him pop up once or twice the the last one
I have, actually more, I have the fifty one yarder
for Borgalis, and I know he was up and down.
He missed that fifty seven yarder. It didn't even really
look close, but I just I felt like at that
point kind of needed to make you kick. It was
(22:12):
a fifty one yarder and there's a little bit of
pressure of like, you know, got a little worried. Yeah,
I mean, and it was close too, So maybe I'm
getting giving him a little bit of the benefit of
the doubt. But a nice kick at a needed time,
and I think that'll hopefully give him some confidence. Anybody
else got anything else before? I do have one more? Yeah, Giles.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
Yeah, I had some blocking too by him.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
Yeah, blocking nice catches. I mean, this is I feel
like what these guys need to do. Who I always
look at John Giles is like, he's a great scout
team wide receiver. He's big, he can run, but you know,
he keeps making plays and popping up from time to
time and maybe there's something there.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
We talked about Chisholms balling out and you're like, if
you're him, You're like, well, he's cooking. What can I
do if I'm not getting the ball?
Speaker 9 (22:54):
Ye block?
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Yeah, and that particular one too there going up, but yeah,
that was a good one, a little flip right over
the middle.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
I wonder if John Giles is like a four A
player in baseball, where like he's probably too good to
be on the practice squad, but he's not quite good
enough to be on their fifty three. But he could
be a nice player to just keep around on the
practice squad, to scout team and then obviously as a
reserve in case. You know, they really have a rash
of injuries at wide receivers. So I thought he was
noticeable in the first game too. I had a couple
(23:22):
of big catches working with Woldridge, So someone that stood out.
Nice block on by g Scott on that reverse too,
that stood out to me. But Tremaine Jones was another
one that I had written down. Really nice job on
that boot leg, you know, containing the quarterback on that
boot though, that's hard to do. It's hard not to
bite down on the run fake. He did a nice
job there. And the guy I wanted to ask you
(23:43):
about deuce was Isaiah Eaton, who I feel like plays
with a lot of energy and a lot of effort.
You can see that out there, but I haven't seen
a ton of him out of in practice, probably because
you're watching.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Yeah, well that was one who really popped up in
Minnesota starting to get some reps. To be honest, during
those reps, didn't really clock him as there's more like,
oh yeah, that guy's out there, that's interesting, you know,
sixty eight what's you know, what's he doing? But anytime
anythink you find this defensive depth, that's a good thing.
So yeah, let's let's move on to the downs. Then
(24:15):
if you guys are ready, and we should be getting
a player probably calling it. So this is always how
it works out right, As we get to the downs,
somebody's got to call in. And while we're talking about
things that didn't quite stand out for me, I didn't
have a lot here. But the first one I had
was I was just a little disappointed in Javon Baker.
I thought he had some opportunities to make some plays today.
He had a false start. Not all his faults. Some
of those balls were a little bit difficult to corral.
(24:38):
But when you're watching Afton Chisholm produce what he's doing,
and it's like, this is a guy it's clicking for,
it's going and Javon Baker, you've seen moments, you've seen flashes,
you've seen some special teams production, but when we get
to the game, it's, you know, there's something missing. He
can't quite make complete the catches or you know, get
to the open spots. A mental error that was kind
of tough. This one was, you know, tough play. I
(24:58):
kind of feel like you should have had this. You know,
I think the ball's right there, it's just a you know,
it's like an inch too far. But I thought it
was a pretty good route. I just don't know. I mean,
I mean, yes, he rounded it up, but I felt
in terms of the timing of the of the play,
it felt like he was in the right spot, so
he's my first down.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
No, I had him too talking about the operations of
the game. You can't have a false start in the
red zone there but a couple of tough throws.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
He also had the toad.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
I think it was a toe tap on the side
where he makes it. So there are flashes where you're like,
this guy has something, So why.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
Does he keeps intriguing you with like a little bit here,
a little bit there. For me, though, I just am
starting like is he ever gonna put it all together?
And are we going to be able to say we
can count on this guy? Snap in, snap out tonight,
Efton Chisholm inspired some new confidence in me that he
could be that kind of guy who can pick up
an impossible two yards when you know there are two
or three times tonight where he caught the ball behind
(25:48):
the line to gain and somehow found a way to
do it. I think Jayvon Baker's got to get that
into his game. He's got to start making plays that
you maybe don't expect them to make.
Speaker 5 (25:57):
Yeah, I was, oh nice. I was disappointed about Javon
as well. I just I thought some of the route
running was a little sloppy too. I think when when
you play on the outside and you're running comebacks and
ows and things like that, everything's got to be a
fade till it's not a fade. So you've got to
get the corner out of there. You can't let the
corner just sit all over the top of the route
(26:17):
because then they're going to jump it right, So when
you get out of the release, you got to really
push vertical and get that corner to open his hips
up up field, and then you can snap it off
and break down and then create that separation. I thought
even on the catch that he had, he didn't really
do a great job of that either. The ball just
kind of snuck through and it was a nice throw
by Wooldridge. So I don't want to pick on him
too much because he did have some open targets where
(26:40):
the ball didn't find him. I thought, Dobbs, you know,
kind of you know, hurt him there on those couple
of plays. But I thought the route running could have
been better as well. So it was a little bit
of both for me.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
And it's one of those ones where you look at
the box score and it's seven targets, one catch for
thirteen yards. It just doesn't you know, it doesn't look good.
Speaker 6 (26:57):
That's not great.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
No what you got for down Zev? You want to
give me this?
Speaker 6 (26:59):
Kyle Williams, Okay, I have you know a couple I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
I know it's my.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
First time on the show and I feel I feel bad,
like going hard here, but whatever, Josh Dobbs, just again
the like ballplacement is just now to the point where
it's getting people hurt, and that's just you know, that's
a problem. You know, obviously it's not I said this
is the teas when we were watching, like, if he's
playing at all for the Patriots this season, then that
(27:25):
that's not good news. Whether it's him or it's another
backup quarterback. So Drake May is the franchise. They need
Drake mayhealthy. That's just it's I don't really care who's
backing them up at that point. But the ball to
Kyle Williams on that little under route that that wrung
his bell, like you got it. There's a zone dropper
that's falling off the line of scrimmage, that's sitting in
that low hole help area, and you have to throw
(27:47):
the ball away from that zone dropper. You can't lead
him right into the guy. You know, that's that's like
the definition of a hospital ball, and you just you
can't do that.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
You know, you have to.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
He can't see it right, like Kyle Williams is not.
That's not where he's looking. He's looking in the backfield
towards the quarterback. So it's on the quarterback to see
the linebacker coming over and try to protect him by
throwing the ball low into the outside so that he
can kind of duck underneath that contact. Putting the ball
up there in that spot is just asking for him
to get concussed, which is unfortunately what it looks like happened.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
So that's a bummer.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
I thought the throw to Javon Baker, both throws that
he missed the Javon Baker were open throws that he
probably should have hit.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
So I'm sorry, Joshua Dobbs. I feel like, but like.
Speaker 5 (28:30):
The one of Kyle Williams really bugs me because this
is a promising young player. Every single time that they
find a receiver like this, it feels like something stunts
his development, like an injury or something like that. And
hopefully it's not too serious for Kyle Williams. But here
we go again.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
Yeah, I hear everything you said. Continuing on. You know,
I thought the the defense and the two minute warning
at the end of the first half, you know, allowing
a little bit of a drive. Didn't give up a
touchdown today, but just a little bit of situational the defense.
I mean, I said, I don't have a lot. I
don't have a lot of bads today. I mean, it's
it's hard to pick on guys that you know probably
aren't going to pick make the team. But that situationally
(29:10):
just stood out to me.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
I had and we talked about in the pregame show
because it happened during the joints just they got caught
in the screen a couple of times. And I mean
that might just be a Viking strong skill set there,
but that was tough to see.
Speaker 9 (29:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
Good, I think it's a great shoutis And honestly, it's
it's something I feel like could be a byproduct of
this defense being so aggressive and so you know, just
ready to go get the ball and when they fake
you out and like you're seeing right here, everybody's going,
you know, one way and all of a sudden it
opens up killing you know, I I have a feeling
that that is something that they're going to have to, you.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
Know, figure out this year and Achilles heel.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
Yeah. Yeah, teams are going to try to get them
with the screens, get them over pursuing. I mean, it's
what you saw the Patriots do so much against some
of these aggressive defenses that you know, make them play
against themselves. Remember, you know, the great one, Paula Malu like,
I feel like they always just bloided him for being
over aggressive. So it's definitely something that's been popping up.
As you said, though tight ends weren't so much a
(30:06):
problem tonight. You know, we'll see how it is going forward.
I mean, they didn't have anybody really playing, but the
last three joint practices i've seen this summer, they've given
up some chunk yardage and some consistent games to the
tight end. So those are two areas I think that
I have circled. Everybody else is you know, jumping off
the bridge again about something. But those are two things
that I think with legitimate concerns schematically as we go forward.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
Yeah, it's a great point to you. It's exactly what
I had written down as well.
Speaker 8 (30:32):
Do so.
Speaker 5 (30:32):
I remember you telling us on our wraps in Minnesota
on Wednesday that they gave up a big play on
the screen in the joint practice, and then they've gave
up a couple here today. I'll have the stats exactly
tomorrow on them, but it was at least forty fifty
yards on screens today, and I think you nailed it, dude,
with that's a scheme like this.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
They want to get up the field.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
They want their defensive line to fly up the field
and make plays in the backfield. And if you're going
to do that, then smart play callers like Kevin O'Connor,
you're gonna call a bunch of screens and test you
to see if you can stay at home. So that's
a good shout by Matisse. The other I had two
other ones Kyle duggar yep, I just playing into the
fourth quarter is one thing that's obviously not great. Finished
(31:15):
the game with an interception on the last play of
the game, which you can almost say, oh, good pick
by Kyle Dugger. You could also say he was on
the field for the last play of the game. You
could also say, why aren't you just going down, Like
why are you trying to fight for yards or try
to come out of the end zone there? That is
just interception down, game over. So the fact that he's
(31:39):
not going straight to the ground there is perplexing. So
good news with that, I suppose is that to spin it,
you know, for our Patriots.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
People, he made a play.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
But I'd also say, if I'm Mike Vrabel, I'm putting
that up on the on the teach tape coming up
when they do the film review of what not to
do when you make a game winning interception, you want
to go down there. I had liked Aphony Jennings and
like small letters next to it because he was also
playing at that point in the game, which is very notable.
But he was obviously playing well at that point in
(32:10):
the game, so it's a little bit. I don't want
to be too harsh with Jennings for that reason, but
the duggar thing that that was not great. The I
don't know what you're trying to do with the ball
there at the end, like just go down and win
the game.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Just two last ones for me, and I didn't I
didn't want to put special teams as a hole on there,
but I just had, you know, the kickoff landing out
of the landing zone, which it took the ball out
to the forty. I was like, maybe they were trying
something there, Yeah, quid kind of thing.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
And then the eighty two yard you know kickoff return.
So I thought the special teams were outstanding last week.
Just these two plays. Things to clean up a little bit.
And again you're kind of grasping a straws here, like
the end.
Speaker 4 (32:45):
Of the game. So I thought they were a good
eighty percent of the game.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
I don't know, you shouldn't put him on the on
the good list. So now you're see Paul would see
what was great with Paul's here, like he.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
Doesn't disagrees, like no, by the real positional battle.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
It's already too hard of a weekend for him. I
don't want to I don't want to rub it and
I miss him.
Speaker 6 (33:04):
You got any more tease?
Speaker 4 (33:06):
I'm good so far?
Speaker 1 (33:06):
All right?
Speaker 5 (33:07):
I got one last one interior offensive line. I just
thought for big picture, I don't love Jared Wilson getting demoted,
Like his preseason tap against Washington wasn't good, wasn't great
the first pre joint practice. I'm assuming they watched the
practice film back. I can't watch the practice film, so
(33:27):
I couldn't tell you how bad it really was or
how good it really was. But he didn't, you know,
he gets demoted to the second unit here today, plays
a little guard, plays.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
A little center.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
I guess it's just me, but I would much rather
just live with the growing pains of Jared Wilson than play.
Speaker 6 (33:42):
Ben Brown at left guard.
Speaker 5 (33:44):
Like I don't know what the end goal is with
Ben Brown at left guard. I have no problem with
Ben Brown being an interior backup that can swing to
all three positions. That's totally fine. But with Jared Wilson,
you know, maybe he just needs reps. He's a young kid.
He's twenty two years old. You only started one season
at Georgia. So if it was me, I would just
let him play it out and see if it if
(34:05):
it sticks, I think they're going to do that with
Will Campbell. So I don't really see what the difference
is other than one was a first round pick and
one was a third round pick. Cole Strange gave up
another pressure today. Brad Berry, I thought got pushed around
a little bit. So that whole area just remains a
question mark. I think they're kind of settling at tackle,
like Campbell's going to be a left, Moses going to
be at right, Bryant's going to be the third guy,
(34:28):
you know, swing tackle there interior offensive line.
Speaker 6 (34:30):
I still have questions about.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Yeah, some intrigued there with for me, with Marcus Bryant,
just you know, what is his ceiling? Is he somebody
who could be waiting in the wings, you know, behind
Morgan Moses? Is he just the guy right now? But
another guy that I think we've seen progressing camp. You know,
we've seen a lot of these guys who maybe you
weren't you know, I mean, no one was really expecting
Fan chishm to be this good. I mean maybe Evan was.
But he's telling me all about them. But you know,
(34:55):
that's a positive sign. I just think overall for the
coaching staff that you're seeing guys improve. You're seeing Drake
May look comfortable. You know, You're seeing Milton Williams start
to make some plays. I think some people thought he
had a quiet start camp. Okay, great, well we're excited.
Now we're gonna be joined by Alex Austin today. Hey Alex,
thanks for joining us and appreciate the time. Yes, sir,
(35:15):
thank you for having me. So another interception for you.
You've really been having a strong summer. What can you
say about the game tonight?
Speaker 10 (35:22):
I think it was a good Gotta get back watch
the tape.
Speaker 4 (35:26):
Never as good, you.
Speaker 10 (35:27):
Think, but it's always good to comforts with the win.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
Alex.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
I just wanted to ask you about playing a little
bit in the slot tonight or today, I should say,
And what have you learned about playing that position? And
how comfortable do you feel playing inside at this point?
Speaker 11 (35:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Overly confident that position.
Speaker 10 (35:47):
I've learned a lot in this camp by playing that position,
being in the coaches, studying splits and think so I
got learned.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
Game, Alex. I know the first couple of seasons you've
had some challenges early in the year, injuries and whatnot.
You've come on late. How does it feel right now
to feel like you're really stringing together a good camp
and really building some momentum as you head towards the
regular season.
Speaker 11 (36:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (36:13):
I think you know to be able to go into
the season, be ready to string the strings of good
weeks again during the season.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Football, Alex.
Speaker 5 (36:26):
Just last one for me, just what what have you
learned so far from Carlton Davis, and what's it been
like to have you know him in the locker room
with you guys in that cornerback room.
Speaker 10 (36:36):
Yeah, he's been a great, a great piece to the
dB room and in.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
The locker room.
Speaker 10 (36:41):
He's someone who's the older guy who's gonna push you
get little keys and techniques on things that he sees.
And he's just been doing great John coaching a lot
of guys, you know, bringing that veteran mentality to the Alex.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
So thanks so much for the time, safe travels back
to New England, and good luck this week as you
enter the last week of the pre season. Thanks Alex,
thank you, thank you. Yeah, great camp. I mean, he's
another guy that's just really had a solid trajectory through camp,
showed some real improvement and like I like I said,
he's had some issues with injuries early in the season
and he just hasn't really been able to get going.
And this year it feels like it's all lining up
(37:16):
for him. Carlton Davis, Christian Gonzalez being hurt opened up
more opportunities for reps with him. Then we started to
see him go into the slot a little bit as
you asked him about. Yeah, Garaul wondering is that a
role for him? Could he be, you know, that top
slot option, or you know, if they don't feel great
about a matchup with Marcus Jones, Like you know what
this week, the slot receiver is a big guy, We're
going to just the approach a little bit, have him
(37:37):
go against double A, put him out there. So really
good option to have. It's just there was such a
question at the cornerback position behind the two top dogs,
and we know what Marcus Jones does in the slot,
but he's really emerged and I think is becoming a
very valuable member of the secondary er.
Speaker 10 (37:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (37:50):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
I thought that he was sort of separate from the
DJ james Is and sort of that next wave of
corners all summer long where it was pretty clear that
he was in that like top three or top four
mix and with Gonzo and Marcus Jones and Carlton Davis
and now I even wonder, like we were saying even
before we had him on, if Alex Austen is playing
(38:12):
himself into the top three and if you're going to
be the top nickel corner, you're going to play a
lot in Today's NFL and we're going all the way
back to January February. You know, Mike Rabel and Elliott
Wolf have talked about the big nickel and how important
that is in this specific scheme and having somebody that's
a little bit bigger, that has a little bit more size,
that can play the run, like those types of things,
(38:33):
And I think Alex Austin checks a lot of those
boxes for them. That's a little bit bigger, a little
bit sturdier than the Marcus Jones. So I do wonder
if that's a role for him, and just last thing
tight ends, Like why not try to throw him at
some tight ends and see if he can cover those
guys too. You brought Bauers week one that type of
thing because they might have some issues with their safeties
(38:54):
covering tight end. So maybe it's Alex Austin who draws
the matchup there.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
No, I agree, it's good to have options there. He's
definitely a bit bigger Gonzo Carlton Davis. They haven't been
one hundred percent this whole time, so good to have
a solid, bigger guy there to fill in the void.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
All right, Well, let's finish off the good the bad
and the injury was unfortunately the worst of the three
the injured and Kyle Williams. Obviously we showed the clip
of him taking a shot to the face. I'm hoping
that maybe it's not a concussion and that you know,
he was able to walk off. That's always a good sign.
But like you said, just such a buzzkill when a
guy's starting to play well and gets hit like this.
(39:28):
Hope it doesn't cost him any time this week, but
I have a feeling we might not see him till
the re.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
It's just tough for able to not look happy with
the ref on that one there either. So another one
we had was I think Chisholm might have gotten a
little banged up all not, but I know they mentioned
it on the broadcast.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
So well, we're seeing him here right now on on
Patriots fifth quarters. He's talking to reporters in the locker room,
so we'll keep our eyes peeled. Look like a lower
leg thing with him, But again, what a knife for
that kid. And I mean just we had him on
the post game show, all smiles all the time.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
He's having fun.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
I mean he's all smiles walking around.
Speaker 5 (40:02):
Yeah, the building, the team hotel, he's just so happy
to be and he's.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
Like me right, like exactly just like you. I'm just
happy to me.
Speaker 5 (40:12):
I'm just like, you know, you're playing pretty well too,
you know. But just from a little inside baseball perspective,
the fact that he's talking to the media in the
locker room post game is a really good sign. Typically,
if a guy experienced an injury that's serious enough to
knock him out of the game, then he doesn't talk
post game, they don't make him available. So hopefully that's
(40:32):
a good sign that Efton Chisholm just kind of whatever
it was with something super minor. So yeah, I think
we can cross him off the injured list. I think
that he's okay good.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Just as soon as he landed on, he's been crossed off.
And then finally I had Isaiah Eaton. Yeah, we mentioned
he walked off under his own power as well. I
look like he just got you know, tied up. And
I don't know how these injuries don't happen on every play.
There's just such chaos. Yeah, and then the line of scrimmage,
I mean there's just bodies flying everywhere.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Big large men, but just crazy because he had the
big play. I'm pretty sure, like two plays before and
then it's like, ope, he's out, So I hope he's okay.
Speaker 5 (41:03):
Then yeah, I think he only played like eight or
nine snaps, so he left the game after whatever injury
this was. It might it might have looked like, yeah,
like you said, Duce got rolled up on or something
like that, so maybe it's not a major injury hopefully,
But I noticed that as well, and he had that
run stuff and it was looking like he was going
to have a decent game, similarly to Kyle Williams.
Speaker 6 (41:24):
And I've already said my piece about Kyle.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
Well, he's just he's been on that trajectory this week,
so you just hate to see a guy maybe have
a step back. It's the same as Kyle Williams. His
guy's just starting to make plays. It's not like, oh,
here's a guy that wasn't even going to make the team.
These are guys that you know, really were making their
push for roles and it's just such a buzzkill to
see those guys go down. So we're hopeful that we'll
see Kyle Williams and as I eat in this week
and confident that that Fton Chishom's going to be okay.
(41:49):
So that'll wrap up our good the bat and the injured,
and now we'll turn it over to you guys. Love
to hear what you all think of today's game.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
And I still feel bad, Josh Jobs, I'm sorry, whatever.

Patriots Postgame Show presented by DraftKings. Patriots Big Win, Big
preseason win twenty to twelve, Heart Heart thriller. Has that
a work for heart pounding? It was a thriller. Always
love when those preseason games go right down to the end.
But as the broadcast remind us, no overtime in.
Speaker 4 (45:44):
The preseason, so can't happen there.
Speaker 1 (45:47):
Let's head to the phones right now. Christian in La
has been hanging on for a while. Hey Christian, what's
going on?
Speaker 13 (45:52):
Hey you guys?
Speaker 14 (45:52):
Happy be football Saturday?
Speaker 1 (45:54):
All right?
Speaker 14 (45:55):
Yeah, So I'm just going to say that it just
feels good to win. It feels good to be two
and oh even if it's the pre season, it feels
even better to feel like your team is the better
team on the field. And then it feels explosively great
to just see the energy that these guys are coming
out with in the players they're making. I must say that,
(46:18):
mister Chisholm, the third has won me over. And so
I'm gonna kid you guys, but I think is my
my receiving core for the for the seasons. Stefon Diggs,
Kyle Williams, uh Pop, Douglas Fen Chisholm, John.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
Giles, Matt Pollins, John John that's it the other guys.
Speaker 14 (46:42):
You know why, John Giles. But he says exactly what
Kadrick Bourne, Booty Faker all do. But he's a little
bit younger and a little cheaper and seems to have
really good blue hands.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Okay, well, thank you, Christian, appreciating iOS of it all.
I think Booty's I think Booty's a lock, but I
get what he's saying. I mean, there's always something intriguing
about John Giles, and there's a reason he's been around
the league as a practice squad guy, because you know,
in the week when you're trying to get ready for
some of these elite big receivers, he's the perfect guy
to say, you know, hey, for next week, go study
(47:16):
Devonte Adams. We need that look this week. He's got
the body type and the speed to give you that.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
Yeah, I feel pretty confident saying that Diggs, Pop, Booty,
Hollins Williams are one hundred percent going to be here.
At that point, I think you get into the conversation
of six or seven. Now, Eftin Chisham looks like he
played his way onto the team today, so I think
he's probably, I don't know, not a roster Locke, but
(47:43):
maybe he's seventy five percent chance I would put it
at now, and then Baker is maybe like a fifty
percent chance, whether or not they really feel the need
to keep a seventh guy and keep Baker around.
Speaker 6 (47:52):
I do not have John Giles on my bingo card.
I don't.
Speaker 5 (47:55):
I don't know about that one. But I think those
five guys that I mentioned, I would be absolutely Florida.
If those five guys aren't here.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
It seems kind of obvious now, I mean, that's just
how it goes. Injuries played a big part in it,
of course. Hope that Chisholm and Kyle Williams now aren't
going to miss a couple of days and then, you know,
then maybe it gets a little bit complicated. Let's head
up north to our friends in Canada and Vancouver. Hey, Sean,
what's going on?
Speaker 13 (48:19):
They do?
Speaker 15 (48:20):
So, I have a few things, so Chism, Dugger and Jennings.
Hopefully we'll get first team reps. We're not gonna be
able to see that until September seventh, but I think
they deserve it. Yeah, and watching Chism today, I can't
help but dream of what Josh did with Edelman and
Amadola starting in twenty thirteen. I'd led them to add
some of those plays with popinches and that would be
(48:40):
so amazing. And now here's back on the fullback thing.
I'm even more convinced that Jack Westova will be.
Speaker 11 (48:47):
The fullback up. He had more good blocks in that
position and later he played tight end when Furtheringham with
the fullback, but the runs.
Speaker 15 (48:55):
Weren't as successful. So Evan, like he said in the pregame,
the pack could find it be fullback. But I do
guys like Johnson will get released that. You know, teams
bring in good fullback, they have probably some plays in mind. Also,
I want to see the Patriots work on defending screencasts.
Speaker 11 (49:12):
That was the my kind of pet peeve.
Speaker 13 (49:15):
For this game.
Speaker 11 (49:17):
And dude, I watched Drake may in a post practice interview.
Speaker 13 (49:20):
Is it just me?
Speaker 11 (49:21):
But those Red jerseys with the final book, they look great.
Speaker 1 (49:26):
Thanks Sean, appreciate it. Uh, Let's keep going with these
calls here We'll go right to Ray in Atlanta. Hey, right,
how's it going, right?
Speaker 4 (49:38):
Ray?
Speaker 1 (49:38):
You're there?
Speaker 9 (49:38):
You know it?
Speaker 4 (49:39):
Right?
Speaker 1 (49:40):
Pop on Ray? All right? Callback?
Speaker 9 (49:43):
Right?
Speaker 1 (49:44):
But yeah, another another comment about the screen passes, and
that's something something to think about. Only brock Bowers. It's
just I feel like, and I think you said it, Evan,
correct me if I'm wrong, if you didn't say it.
But it's not so much like rock Bowers is going
to require a game plan, Like you're going to have
to be like we're putting gone zone on him third
down because we're just not gonna let him beat us
on third down. Right, you know, I would not be
surprised at all. Maybe it's Alex Austin, but you're gonna
(50:05):
need a game plan, And maybe TJ. Hawkinson is a
game plan worthy guy. But I see like the middle
tight ends, it's just the guys that you're not really
specifically trying, and we just have to hold our own
against those tight ends in the key moment. That's what
worries me a little bit. Seeing Gabriel Pepper's on the
tight ends a little bit. We see Marcus Jones on
the tight ends a little bit. You know, they don't
really have that coverage guy. You wonder maybe Craig Woodson.
(50:28):
I mean he's athletic. Maybe he is the kind of
safety he talked what last week about needing to be
able to man guys up go to the line. Yeah,
maybe he's a guy that you know eventually can take
over that role. But I think it's something they got
to figure out.
Speaker 6 (50:40):
Ye No, I I did say that.
Speaker 1 (50:44):
Okay, good, good, good good.
Speaker 5 (50:46):
I think that's the biggest thing though, is when you
play a brock Bauers, you play a you know, a
Trey mcbrian and Travis Kelce, George Kittle, like those are
guys that are Tuesday players. You're circling those guys early
in the week and you're saying, we can't let eighty
seven on Kansas City beat us. Like that's just the
way that those players work. So you're gonna you're gonna
(51:07):
do something special, like put a corner on them. You're
gonna put a double team on them. And it's when
he's inside the formation, it's super easy to bracket him
or double him, or you know, have two guys with
eyes on him in zone or whatever the.
Speaker 6 (51:17):
Case may be. It's the sneaky guys that I'm worried about. Dude.
Speaker 5 (51:21):
It's the ones that are like the second or third
fiddle in an offense that you're not really thinking about,
but they're gonna get one on ones because you have
to cover Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Speaker 6 (51:31):
So like TJ.
Speaker 5 (51:32):
Hawkinson's the guy that if we he beats us, we
tip our cap and we move on. Well, I don't
want to see them have to tip their cap because
you know, you like to see them be able to
guard those types of guys. But that's what exactly what
worries me. It's not it's not Brat Bowers. They're gonna
have something in store for Bowers. It's those other secondary
tight ends that come in here. You know, Week three
(51:53):
when they play Pittsburgh and John Neu Smith is on
the Steelers. Now, like he's kind of like sneaky right
right right, like that kind of guy, Like you're not
gonna dk like they have other receivers that you're gonna
be worried about, and then all of a sudden, you know,
Johnny Smith just beats you.
Speaker 8 (52:09):
No.
Speaker 3 (52:09):
We talked about a little on PU I think it
was the twenty seventeen AFC game. Like I'm pretty sure
the Jags put Ramsey on Gronk, Like sometimes you just
need like the tight ends of receiver now, so sometimes
your best cover person has to go on it. So
it could be Gonezo on brock Bowers. You just got
a game plan for it. See how it plays out.
Speaker 1 (52:24):
Yeah, brock Bowers though, man, he could. Yeah, we have
a lot.
Speaker 5 (52:26):
We have a lot of because he's been there week
one and I feel like brock Bowers and Max Crosby
are just the examples that.
Speaker 4 (52:32):
Were just big to the NFL.
Speaker 1 (52:34):
Yeah, those two.
Speaker 5 (52:35):
Guys just keep on well when brock Bowers is here, Car,
I know, well, hey it's week one and that's what
you circle on the calendar.
Speaker 1 (52:41):
But yeah, you know, not to get out hiad of ourselves,
but the Raiders are just one of those teams with
you know, select elite talent in certain spots, but you know,
kind of a dearth of talent in other spots. Should
be a great game coming up here in just a
few weeks. My gosh, it's coming fast.
Speaker 6 (52:54):
It is.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
Go back to the phone lines here. Joe from Pennsylvania, Hey, Joe,
things to.
Speaker 16 (53:00):
Take my call, And Evan, I'm actually your neighbor calling
from Pennsylvania back to your neighbor. I looked right down
the street from you on Sissam Island, and then I
wanted to come back to chishm. But I got four
quick fire things for you almost like yes, nos in
a way. But Anthony Jennings did he did he play
his way onto the roster or did he more so
(53:20):
play his way to being traded to a team trading
for him?
Speaker 9 (53:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 16 (53:24):
How about how about Marcus Bryant? Is he our future
right tackle? And then how about special teams? Are we
are we going to be able to keep this up
with with our with the good returns mm hmm. And
then how about and how about Chase On? How about
when he how about you know it was all him
really on that interception and how he made that great
(53:46):
move at the quarterback, kept on dropping back. You know,
he kind of went it was good the winside, but
then he real quick.
Speaker 11 (53:52):
Went outside on him.
Speaker 16 (53:54):
Chase On, could he almost be like our best free
agent signing like our cheapest and he might be nfbr
on our best agents? Siny love it not not in
a bad way either, Yeah, yeah, But then how about coming.
Speaker 11 (54:05):
Back to Chisholm.
Speaker 16 (54:07):
It's like I love Rabel, love Josh McDaniels, love Draking Me.
But but geez, I really loved it. I really loved Chisholm,
and they got to just put him with the starting unit.
They have to see, like, is there out of respect
for Pop? I really like Pop, but I feel like
he just doesn't see it all the time in the
(54:27):
zone and zone and where's when to stop and when
to go, and I just feel like Chishm's missing peace
and they have to give it. They I feel like
he's Chishm's going to be the engine for this offense.
Speaker 1 (54:39):
It's a bold statement. Joe, thank you for the call.
Go cool off, take a cold shower, I think someday.
Speaker 5 (54:44):
And that's been my take about this the whole time,
which isn't even going back to when I was hyping
in before I should have been. And that's just like
he a lot of these guys, like I don't mind
Welker even going all the way back to Troy Brown.
I wish Paul was here to talk about Troy Brown
back in the nineties. But those guys, it all takes
like two or three years for them to really catch
on in the NFL. You know, Edelman made the team
(55:06):
initially really as a punt returner, and then they kind
of worked on receiver with him in the background, and
he got some opportunity as a rookie. I think some
people got hurt right his rookie season and he gets
on the field a little bit, but it wasn't a
ton and then in like years three and four, it
was like, Okay, now Julian Edelman has arrived. I feel
like we're gonna be similar with Efton Chisholm, where I
don't know if he's going to play a ton as
(55:27):
a rookie. There's you know, Pop, there's Digs, who also
I think factors into this conversation a little bit, and
you know, I don't know if he's going to be
what the callers said like that this year, but his
skills are worth keeping around for that to maybe happen
at some point down the line.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
I think he got keep.
Speaker 3 (55:44):
But it's also tough because it kind of stinks that
we've played two teams that haven't played their starters at all.
So I'd like to see him get some more reps
against the top guys and a gat ndefeated.
Speaker 6 (55:52):
Okay, I'm not sure how much I care about the
two O.
Speaker 1 (55:58):
You gotta take it. It's funny say that though. I
such a distinct memory of du Patriots super fan in
two thousand and nine, and I think it was week
two and I'm getting ready walk down a Starbucks. Actually
your spot, no offense, weren't, but remember going down and
then all of a sudden seeing like Wes Welker is
not playing today, and I'm like, oh, no, Wes Welker, No.
(56:20):
And you know, here we go, kid, And you know,
Julie Duneland certainly got some opportunities. He got hurt a
lot that year too, you know, fits and starts with
him to start his career. But overall it's just we
need receivers like they need receivers. And there's been such
a long grind and you go back and look at
the depth chart from a couple of years ago when
you realize how sparse it's been. And now it's all right, Well,
you feel pretty good about Kyle Williams is starting to
(56:41):
get open, and hey, guess what, Stefan Diggs is on
the roster now, and he looks pretty good too. You know,
MATC Collins is a complimentary piece. It just it feels
like they're starting to build something on offense that we
can finally quell some of these cries if we just
don't have the weapons. We don't have any weapons. You know,
we have guys that can move the ball, and I
think it's a really good signed. I don't know how
Axtens I'm going to end up, but I like having him,
(57:03):
you know, I like having that bullet in the holster.
And you know, injuries happen. You've got a guy who
looks like he really wants to play and get open.
Speaker 5 (57:09):
Yeah, and you got you didn't even bring up Penderson
and Hunter Henry, so like you have Max and tight
ends that can catch the ball a little bit too,
So I'm optimistic. And then you put Josh McDaniels into
all that, and I have a lot of faith in
McDaniels to get guys.
Speaker 6 (57:22):
Open with scheme and things like that.
Speaker 5 (57:24):
So if they can pass protect, I think that they're
going to be able to move the ball.
Speaker 6 (57:28):
Can can they block? Right? I mean that's really going
to be the number one question is can they block?
Speaker 1 (57:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (57:33):
How good?
Speaker 1 (57:34):
How good do you think Marcus Bryan is? I mean,
I think he's worthy of an Evan Lazar film critical film.
I just look down, you know, how is he looking?
Moved to the left side so you got tape on
either side.
Speaker 5 (57:45):
I like that he's a true swing tackle because he
played left and right in college, but mostly left, and
then he could playing a lot of right, uh in
training camp and looks okay over there. So I don't
know if he's a starter. The caller mentioned that maybe
he's the future starting right tackle.
Speaker 6 (58:03):
Maybe, but even if he's just the.
Speaker 5 (58:06):
Top swing tackle for them for the life of his
rookie contract for the next three or four years, that's huge.
Like if he's you know, Cam fleming Ley models like
one of those types of guys, Like those guys are
super valuable that can spot start and that can hold
up in a game you know here and there and
things like that. So I'm not ready to annoint him
as a starter. I guess maybe it's not even that
(58:27):
I just the seventh round pick. Like if you drafted
a top backup with the seventh round pick that can play,
that's a that's a great pick, especially on the offensive line.
The one thing you know, I noticed with him from
the preseason opener, especially was that the foot speed and
the playstrade seemed to translate. And that's the baseline for
any offensive lineman in the preseason. Can you move bodies
(58:50):
and can you move your feet? Like if you can
do those two things, then that's a good starting point.
He does play high you know, very able talked a
lot about that when I asked him about him if
I think that was last week. You know, pad level
is a concern at six seven, Like you got to
keep the pads down. And he's not like a stellar
lateral mover, like I think he's a little bit clunky,
(59:10):
a little bit high waisted, you know, high cut, but
he gets in the way he sets, you know, inside out,
and he's a tough guy to move, and he can
move guys in the run game. And he can play
both left and right tackle. So to me, A's well
on his way to being a top swing tackle as
a rookie. Which is a really good draft pick. Like
I don't want to understand the seventh rounder. Yeah, that's
(59:31):
a really solid pick.
Speaker 3 (59:32):
I mean we talked about all the time on the
draft countdown. You want guys that can make an impact
your late round pick and you can get on the
field and be reliable.
Speaker 4 (59:38):
That's a win.
Speaker 1 (59:39):
Have a role at a position that has been a
huge concern. I mean, two rookie tackles coming in just
the start of something. Again, like we said in the
pregame show, like it's we're not going up against the
Chiefs this year, you know. For the AFCJ like they
just are trying to build and find these pieces, and
that's a really critical one. Got an email here though,
for you about Anthony Jennings. He said, time and again,
I've heard Evan claim that this defense has no spot
(01:00:01):
for Infony Jennings, who has developed nicely over the past
few years under different coaching staffs. To me, Jennings has
always seemed like one of those middle back of the
roster guys who are crucial and building our team depth
and sneakily contribute to wins in a few tight spots
during the year. I need explanation on what makes Jennings
specifically persona non grata in Evans's eyes, that is from
Ethan and La, who also says he's a native Agelina
(01:00:21):
when he's ninety nine point nine percent sure that Christian
from La is not from there.
Speaker 5 (01:00:27):
I like that, so I mean we talked about earlier
in the show. It just it's a scheme that wants
it wants their edge rushers to get up the field
like that. I would say the most important traits for
Mike rabel edg rusher are get off and bent. Like
those are the two things that they want. It's why
Landry and Chase on are playing as much as they are.
(01:00:47):
Like that's the most important point of emphasis for them
from a traits or a scouting standpoint. And Jennings is
a burly stout, heavy handed edge center, like he's a
Bill Belichick three four outside linebacker, Like that's that's what
he is. Now he's proven that he can make plays
in the backfield today. And now, yeah, I was probably
(01:01:08):
against like Minnesota's like fourth string tackles, but you see that,
and I it has nothing to do with Anthony Jennings.
Like I think Anthony Jennings is an NFL starter. It's
going to catch on somewhere if because he's a good player.
I've always been on that, you know, side of things.
But it just from a scheme perspective, and I think
they agree because they have him playing in the fourth
(01:01:29):
quarter of preseason games and back to back weeks.
Speaker 6 (01:01:31):
He's just not their type.
Speaker 5 (01:01:33):
I actually think that even a guy like Truman Jones
might be a little bit more what they're looking for,
just from a skill set perspective. But like I said earlier,
if I would look at it and say, like, find
to find a role for him, Like if somebody throws
a you know, early day three pick at you and
it's worth it, then trade him.
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
But if not, I would try to find a role
for him.
Speaker 1 (01:01:54):
Stuff. Let's go back to the phones. Tony is up
in Canada. Hey, Tony, thanks for calling him.
Speaker 13 (01:01:59):
Hey guys, Yeah, I watched the game. It looks like
Trey Henderson. He's pretty decent running.
Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Back with Yeah, I would say that's probably coming to
light right now for sure.
Speaker 13 (01:02:11):
You know, it's hard not to get too too excited
about this guy. But I at beginning, when we got him,
I thought maybe he would be fighting for the number
one role as a running back. But now I'm thinking
he's an integra everything I see, he's going to be
an integral part of our offense. And I mean, it's
(01:02:35):
so so exciting to see him run. I mean that
touchdown he scored was just it baffled my mind. He
had no where to go. He paused and then he
just hit decrease and he's Indian Zone. It's really exciting.
So I'm really happy that we got him, and I'll
let you guys go right away. But I can't see
how Chisholm doesn't make the team because they they release him,
(01:02:58):
he's going to get picked up right away. We know that,
and I don't think they're going to trade him, so
I think they Chisholm has has made the team. That's
my opinion. I'll just listen to the rest of the show, guys,
but I'm super excited.
Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
Thanks Tony, guys, thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Yeah,
I mean I agree, and the guy like Chisholm, I
just I think it's an opportunity for the coaching staff
to reinforce the culture that you want. And here's a
kid from a small school was super duper highly productive
and you're seeing it translate now into the NFL, and
it's just a great example. I think they coaches love
when those kind of guys emerge. And all these coaches say,
(01:03:36):
it doesn't matter how you got here, it just matters
you know what you do when you get here, and
so far, all he's done since he got here is
balled out and done everything asked to him, whether he's
blocking for punts or punt returns or whatever it is,
getting out there blocking in the run game as well
or making those tough catches which today just blew me away.
A lot of people been talking about like his play strength,
and that's just been such a buzzword. But today, man,
(01:03:59):
it really showed that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:00):
With It's not even just Efton Chisholm, but like the
car mentioned with the running backs that was on are good,
like running hard. It just feels like there's a new
culture being coach of them run through the play, knock
the defender on their butt like you just I love
to see that. It's a new energy.
Speaker 5 (01:04:13):
Yeah, I'll just talk about Henderson again because I can
just talk about all the long.
Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
I just this is.
Speaker 5 (01:04:19):
You know, I've been covering the team for eight training
camps now, and he is the best rookie skill player I've.
Speaker 6 (01:04:25):
Seen in the Patriot uniform. Like he's that good. I
think he's special, I really do.
Speaker 5 (01:04:29):
And I think we can say that now like he's
doing it again starters in practice and the speed is
just ridiculous. The contact balance is great. The blocking, the
pass blocking. Every every week I watch him pass blocking
in practice, and I sometimes I just watch watch thirty
two just pass block people and put them into the ground.
Like it's just a ton of fun to watch him
play in that area of the game too.
Speaker 10 (01:04:51):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:04:52):
Cover, Like no one can cover him on a wheel route,
Like he runs a wheel rout out of the backfield.
He's open every single time. He's just he's really special.
Now to the caller's point about like RB one and
like all that stuff, like I'll keep saying it until
I it had happens. Differently, I don't think he's going
to be used like a true like lead workhorse running.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
Back, first down, full back, right into the line right.
Speaker 4 (01:05:16):
That being said on the touchdown you just lined up education.
Speaker 6 (01:05:18):
No, I'm not saying it's not going to happen.
Speaker 5 (01:05:20):
I just think that they're gonna be wary of us
over using him and try to be as careful as
they can with him.
Speaker 3 (01:05:26):
You have a strong running back group so you can
do that, which is also big.
Speaker 1 (01:05:29):
Yeah, the weapon for Josh Mattanniel's we talked about brock
Bowers and like you know, having tight ends that can
cause matchup problems. Well, Trayvon Henderson is a matchup problem
for the running back position. And if you don't have
linebackers that can run. I mean, I think about the
old Patriots teams that were a little bit heavier on
that second level. You know, you got to have a
guy that can run. You've got to have a plan
for Travion Henderson. I'm sure that teams are watching this
(01:05:50):
preseason saying, we got to go into this know where
this guy is at all times, and it's not going
to be so easy to find him. Like sometimes he
will be out there on first down. Sometimes he'll just
be third that you know, Josh can put them out there.
One more point in Henderson than I love is just
thirty two, babes, thank you, I mean thirty two. It's
a run in my favorite running to my favorite running
back growing up, Craig James in the eighties, who I
(01:06:11):
got the opportunity to meet an interview earlier in the spring.
I just love seeing that. You know, we had no offense.
An Tony Gibson four is not a running back, no not,
you know, I need I need wide receivers in the eighties,
I need running backs in the thirties, linebackers in the
fifties and nineties, Like, I still have not adjusted to
this world where it just seems like everybody's got every
wide receiver's got a single digit now. And I guess
(01:06:33):
I can get on board with that a little bit
like Digs and eight, like I can booty at nine.
I'm okay with that, but I just find it so confusing,
like cal David seven.
Speaker 3 (01:06:40):
But dude, to go back off this, evan to go
back off Henderson lining up in the backfield, Like I
always talk about, you want the other team to be
able to prepare for us. Well, you got Henderson back there,
you got Digs, you got Hunter, Henry Pop Douglas, Like, now,
oh crap, who we guarding? So it's just something we
haven't had here in a while.
Speaker 5 (01:06:56):
Which yeah, I mean we talked about Bowers being kind
of like a Tuesday player. Like, to me, when Henderson
is on third down, you are now going to have
to plan like, are we really going to put a
linebacker on this guy? Like it's probably gonna have to
be like a safety that's going to cover him, that
has some cover skills that you trust. If they do
flex him out wide, you're going to be able to
cover him on an island in Mantea, us Man.
Speaker 1 (01:07:17):
And that's you know.
Speaker 5 (01:07:18):
I was asked on the Sports ub, when's the last
time the Patriots drafted a skilled player as good as
Trevon Henderson. I said Gronk, like, I really think you're
going back that far. And now I know that's a
lot to do with the players they've drafted, and it's
like kind of a backhanded compliment maybe in some ways,
but to me, it excites me, Like, I think that's
(01:07:39):
overall is super exciting that they finally have like a
true difference maker.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
You've seen it a couple of times where they get
him out on a little wheel road out of the
background and you see that linebacker kind of taking the
angle and then he tries to turn up and it's like, oh,
good luck, buddy, he's going to blow by you. Yeah,
kind of like what we saw there in that play
that they scored on the end of the first practice
in Minnesota. It's a down to Paul Pearlot country right
now down here, Virginia. Emory, Hey, what's going on? Emory?
Speaker 9 (01:08:06):
Good afternoon, gentlemen, Good afternoon. It is it feels so
great to get fix your fan again. Well, I never stopped.
I never stopped being a fan when we were going
through the purgatory there a little bit. But anyway, hey, Greg,
listening to you guys, and a thing about Jennings. You
(01:08:28):
know what I like about Jenny Jennings is acting like
a pro. You know, I don't. I'm not hearing anything
nor seeing any negative body language with him playing in
the fourth quarter. This guy still got his moto on
out there trying to prove he's a football player. And
he may have some limitation, but he's out there saying, hey, listen,
(01:08:50):
if you don't trade me, I'm gonna make it real
hard for you to cut me because I'm gonna go
out here and compete. And so I've enjoyed watching him
being a pro and chios him and Kyle Williams. I
have no doubt those guys are gonna make some plays
with Drake and just and and you guys break it
(01:09:15):
down for me.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Thanks, Henry appreciated. I think he's totally right. I mean,
I think I think also part of it is just
that Anfredy Jennings knows that he can play, and he
knows that if it isn't here, It's going to be
somewhere else. And but credit to him, he's totally right,
not griping about it. He's just out there. And when
he goes against third stringers, he looks like this guy
should be playing in the NFL. He's not. He's not
one of these guys. He's not a cut guy.
Speaker 5 (01:09:36):
Yeah, especially the pass rushing stuff like that's not really
his specialty. And to see him be able to get
some sacks today, I think he had, you know, three sacks,
two and a half and four pressures at least, So,
I mean that's that's production that I you don't normally
see from Anthony Jennings in that regard.
Speaker 3 (01:09:53):
I mean, I I don't see the issue with keeping
more edge rushers, like the position gets beat up, beating
up a lot. Like he can do it, he can
prove it. I'm fine with it. Making this team.
Speaker 1 (01:10:01):
Yeah, I mean kind of connected to Chase On too,
because we didn't really talk about Chase On, but I
do agree. I think he's been an excellent signing and
really what they needed. You know, it was a big
part of concern for me coming into this season, which
just are they going to have enough juice. I mean,
Harold Landry had a good year last year, but there's questions, well,
why Tennessee let him go? And is he you know,
on the back, But he's been a consummate professional. He
was all over the place in that first Vikings practice
(01:10:23):
and now to see Chase on who got dinged up,
missed some practices, but to come back. He was a
problem in those practices, especially the first one too. You know,
I kind of half kiddingly said like, do you assign
him to an extension? It's probably a little too soon
for that, but you might want to do it before
that guy racks up ten sacks. So he's he's been
great question here though from Zach in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
(01:10:45):
Now that is pul Parolo territory right now. But what
do you think of reminder? Stevenson might be missing something,
but where is he? I was banged up in last
week's game. We haven't seen him since last week's game.
They ran him, They ran him pretty good a few times.
I mean it was you know, he was in there
longer than I even thought he would. Yeah, so that's
an unfortunate step back for him, and that's probably why
Jamichael Hasty's Wulden lighting it up so much, you know, Yeah,
(01:11:06):
but the depth trickles down now you get Hasty.
Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
That being said, we have a strong running back room,
so whatever it takes from to get healthy, at least
you have guys who can kill the role.
Speaker 5 (01:11:13):
Yeah, so we did see Remandre physically, see Ramondre in Minnesota,
so whatever it was. Mike Rabels said earlier this week
that he doesn't believe it's going to be like a
long term issue for Remondre, but just some you know,
bumps and bruises and from training camp in the preseason.
So he was working off to the side, doing like
an individual workout during practice on Wednesday at least, and
(01:11:36):
probably Thursday too, So he's he was with the team,
he's just not playing or participate.
Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
I mean again, to go back to the point we
made in the pregame show, like they've been cautious with
these guys. They were cautious with Mirmanda before he got hurt.
There was a practice he came out late and just
jump right in. So there's definitely a bigger effort now
to limit workloads and to do it in a way
that we've never really seen at least in these parts.
I mean, I don't really ever remember hearing or seeing
anywhere where. You know, guys just warm up on their
own and then they come out and hop right into eleven's.
(01:12:03):
You know, it's a little bit strange to see, but
it is something that you're doing. So every time a
guy comes late to practice, it doesn't mean like he
overslept and missed his alarm and then there's like came out,
which I think some of the reactions have been that
for specific players. So we'll see plenty of emails about
one Eft and Chishm. I wonder why not so much
efton Chism the second, but fton Chism the third getting
(01:12:24):
a lot of emails. Any big predictions for the inevitable
Paul verse fred eftin Chisholm talk. How much more does
Chisholm have to do before Paul stops hating him? I
think we saw that I start the thaw last week
in practice, like I said on the pregame show with Paul,
and you know he does he did not his cup
of tea always. He likes the big fast outside guys
and you can't fault in that. But't know, but he
(01:12:46):
but I think Chishom's starting to grow in because he's
making plays and he's doing it and you can't deny it.
It's consistent every practice, every game, guy shows up.
Speaker 4 (01:12:52):
How do you not win over Paul on that touchdown catch?
Right there? I mean what.
Speaker 6 (01:12:58):
I just really like.
Speaker 5 (01:13:00):
One thing I really appreciate about Paul is I think
you said this earlier, Deduce, like Paul doesn't just fall
for it at first glance. Like Paul, you need to
earn Paul's praise and earned Paul's.
Speaker 1 (01:13:11):
So when you get it, you've earned it, you know, right.
Speaker 5 (01:13:13):
So I respect that because I'm somebody I admittedly that
will be a little knee jerk sometimes. And I see
f Chism run a whip route and like spring in
the spring and OTAs with no pads, and I'm like,
guy's making the team right, and Paul's like, what's Wade?
So I respect that Paul has a slow burn. I
think that's the right approach, that's the right way to
do it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
I think it's a general rule to never answer a
question you don't know the answer to. But I don't
know the answer to this one, and I'm going to
just throw it out there and hope that one of
you guys might or somebody out there might because it's
been something I've been thinking about and we've talked about it.
I think we've been trying to get an answer about
what happens to the injured guys who have been put
on IR. Are they done for the year or do
they still have a chance to come back. I'm thinking
I don't know exactly, but does it have to be
(01:13:55):
designated at cutdowns that these IR guys are designated? And yeah,
even if they went on a week or two ago, right.
Speaker 5 (01:14:01):
So, like think about it this way, like when you
go on cutdown day and you play somebody on IR
cut down day, they are physically going on the transaction
wire as being placed on injured reserve on that day.
Whereas the guys that are already on IR, like my
poor boy, you know, pour one out for brock Lampy,
Like he is on injured reserve already, so you're not
(01:14:23):
going through a transaction on cut down day, so he's
no longer on the roster or an active roster.
Speaker 4 (01:14:29):
But if it's IR after cutdown day, you can come back.
Speaker 5 (01:14:33):
So on on cutdown day, instead of cutting a player,
you can place him on IR designated to return and
then they can all still come they can come back
in season, right, So like a guy, like if they
were to just totally just an example, but if they
were to place Kendrick Bourne on injured reserve on cut
down day, they could designate him to return in season
(01:14:54):
because he's still currently on the ninety man roster.
Speaker 8 (01:14:57):
Got it?
Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
Got it?
Speaker 13 (01:14:58):
Well?
Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
Thank you having for providing that.
Speaker 6 (01:14:59):
Yeah, I asked for some clarification on that there.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Mess meant this is Dougie from and I'm gonna butcher this.
I think it's in Scotland. Done done, fermilineugy, Sorry about that.
And I have a lot of Scottish blood of me
and I didn't get that one right. So but hey, guys,
I just want to thank all the Patriots media. As
an international fan, we were forced to watch the Vikings
TV broadcasting. Boy, it was so unbalanced, it was unbelievable.
They really really don't like Josh Dobbs. They took every
(01:15:25):
opportunity to twist the knight ifin. On another note, I
wish Fred and Paul were in studio so Fred could
be trying to get under Paul's skin like Chisholm last week. Well,
I'm sorry Dougie that I'm sorry for mispronouncing where you're from,
and also that you didn't get to see my triumphant
debut on the preseason game, which was a.
Speaker 4 (01:15:40):
Lot of done well done.
Speaker 1 (01:15:42):
And now yes, thank you Travis and West Virginia always
keeping me keeping it real, said it's the good, the bad,
the good list and the bad list. Stop calling the
up and down, stay true to your brand, and stopped
saying tonight the game wasn't played at night. It's still
not night. Thanks Travis and Mosher and Travis. Oh there
is there's a guy. I'm like, glance on the side
a little bit. I don't really know what I'm doing. Yeah,
(01:16:04):
it's hard to know when what was all the glance
d of the side deuce? I got notes from myself.
I think I got better as it went on.
Speaker 5 (01:16:09):
This was I told you, this is the Jerry and me.
I just started to I start to notice these little
things about me, especially myself, but all of us. Sometimes
I noticed those little things. I'm sorry I pointed it out.
Now you're not gonna be.
Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
No no, Well, now that I see it myself, hopefully
I got better as the as the product went along.
But it's a little distracting when you have like, you know,
a video monitor of yourself right there, then you have
the camera up here, and then you have like the
broadcast here, and so you know, you go on your
live and then all of a sudden your head pops
up and it's confusing. No excuses, though, I'll be better
next time if the opportunity ever were to arise. But
Paul's gonna be back, although I don't think that's get small.
(01:16:43):
There we go, but Paul, there's no, there's no. We're
not producing the game next week. It's I think an
NFL network, so it's not a Patriots broadcast, so unfortunately
they won't be Paul or me in there.
Speaker 6 (01:16:54):
Can I tell a little funny story real quick?
Speaker 9 (01:16:56):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (01:16:56):
Please?
Speaker 5 (01:16:56):
So I just looked at my phone and I had
three calls and a text message from our football operations
thinking that they left me behind in Minnesota. So I
got I don't want to name names because I probably shouldn't,
but I finally got back to this person. But yeah,
I have I have four miss calls and a missed
(01:17:18):
tech in a text message asking me, uh, are.
Speaker 1 (01:17:21):
You on the bus?
Speaker 6 (01:17:22):
And you got.
Speaker 5 (01:17:25):
So it's good to know that they wouldn't like really
leave without me. Yeah, so they actually were looking out.
And the funny thing is is, I think I can
say this name. I told Michael Grady are our head
of security, that I wasn't staying for the game, and
we had a whole conversation about it because he was like,
what do you what do you mean you're not staying
for the game, and I was like, yeah, I had
to tell him that I was going to be on
(01:17:46):
the show and everything like that. So I told them
that I wasn't staying for the game. But I guess
I'm still probably on like the master list or something
like that.
Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
So well, it's also clear that they're not watching the
Patriots postgame show. I guess that's not I guess not,
But there he is. He's already back. It's funny because.
Speaker 5 (01:18:03):
I I'm usually one of the last ones on the
bus because I stay for open locker room and really
I wait, like as long as there's players still in
the locker room, then they're not going to leave without you,
right because they can't leave without the players. So normally
I wait until like it's very very clear that like
the last couple of players are stragglers and then I like,
be line it for the bus.
Speaker 6 (01:18:24):
But that was that was good to that was nice
of them.
Speaker 1 (01:18:26):
They were like, where's Lazaar get on the bus? We
can't leave without him. Email from Ellen, Wisconsin, Mike, I
feel like you were one of the last ones thinking
Mike Mac might be salvageable as the QB. Now you
seem the most vocally down on Drake than anyone. Did
Mac hurt you so bad that you're afraid to hope again?
Speaker 9 (01:18:44):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:18:44):
I think that's fair. Well, I'm not and I'm not
down on Drake at all. I just I think I
have high expectations or you know, I just I don't
want to get you know, I want, like, like we
said about Paul, I want to make sure that like
we're not just like he's Drake May he's our quarterback.
He's amazing, you know, like I want to analyze what
are the steps he needs to take to get better?
And you know, I think I gave him a few
(01:19:05):
sive praise tonight about how he's looked in the pocket.
I think he's great in the pocket going back to
the spring, look like he's grasping the system. But I
have high expectations, especially at the end of games. And
that's why I brought up at the end of the practice.
I know it was a disaster and you can probably
throw out the final play of a joint practice, but
still it was him throwing a bomb to Kaysehan Boody
(01:19:26):
as time expired to score a touchdown, and you know,
it's a little bit of a glimmer of hope. Whereas
you know, going back to the in stadium practice, some
of the more competitive periods we've seen in recent weeks
that you know, it's been sputtering. It's been sputtering at
the end, and when it's been specifically the area that
I've been stressed on and focused on end of game,
you know, two minutes need a touchdown, like that's what
(01:19:47):
makes the quarterbacks great. And I'm actually reading a book
right now, you know, doctor z Paul Zimmerman, famous football writer.
He's got the the New The Thinking Man's Guide to
Pro Football, and it was written in the mid eighties
and I I started reading it and last night I
was reading through the quarterback section and the first thing
he says is, like, give me the quarterback who when
(01:20:08):
it's all on the line and the fans are booing
and there's ice all over the football, He's the guy
that can take you in. That's what makes quarterbacks great,
and that's what you got to want around here. That's
you want greatness. You don't just want a guy who's
got the rocket arm and can run like the wind,
but when the game's on the line, he turns into
a puddle. So you know, I just want my analysis
of Drake to be fair, but also to have the
(01:20:29):
expectations that you know, I want him to be great.
I want him to be special. I want him to
win some games this year when it looks like they've
been terrible today. And that's what I took from that
practice on Thursday. They were terrible and they two sacks,
and you know, it didn't look like they were going anywhere.
They watch a play up, So that was a glimmer
of hope for me. But I appreciate you keeping a
real l and you're probably right. I probably did hang
on to Mac a little bit longer than.
Speaker 5 (01:20:53):
In all fairness though, because I'm in the same boat
like I held on to Mac till the bitter end too.
But we all watched his rookie season where he led
them to ten wins in a playoff.
Speaker 4 (01:21:02):
Berth and you're saying there might be something.
Speaker 5 (01:21:03):
Yeah, Like it's hard to not like he's, let's face it,
at this point, Mac Jones accomplished more than Drake Maye did,
right because he had the team in his play in
the playoffs his rookie year. So like, as much as
it was a disaster last year for Drake in terms
of what was around him, and that's totally fair, but
that's the way, you know, you got to kind of
call for what it is, like Mac won ten games
as a rookie. So we're still a little bit, you know,
(01:21:25):
in a different spot now with Drake. I think with him,
you know, we put him on the good list for
third down and then talked a little bit about some
of the high throws that he had early on in
the game the delay game, Like it's consistency, Like he
has these moments where he looks like a top five
quarterback in the league, like Deuce was saying, an arm
talent and the mobility and all those types of things.
I mean, he looks like Josh Allen. Like there's times
(01:21:46):
where he looks like Josh Allen, and then there's times
like he looks like Josh Allen. But these guys, you know,
you know, he's throwing high to Pop Douglas and it's
going off Douglas's hands and almost to the safety's lap,
and like they can't have those types of plays, like
those are the ones that are killing him. I mentioned
the throwaway that he had because I thought that was
an area of growth. I thought that was a moment
where gunslinger Drake may probably wants to throw the ball
(01:22:08):
back into the middle of the field, but the smart version,
you know, the devil on the other shoulder is telling him, hey,
let's throw this away and let's live to see another play.
So that was some growth there from him, I thought,
And I'm you know, hopefully that is it moving forward.
But like the turnover worthy throw, like the Pop like
that's that's on him, Like that ball can't sail like that,
you got to throw that low.
Speaker 1 (01:22:30):
Delay a game, delay a game a game.
Speaker 3 (01:22:31):
It's also tough to see two games back to back
with the slow start, but he did bounce back. But d'
just like you mentioned, like you're hopeful, you want him
to be good. Rabel's and still in this new culture.
So like Rabel's part one but one A, but you
know May is one B.
Speaker 1 (01:22:45):
Yeah, Oh absolutely, I mean that's that's just how the
league works. And I mean I might even say he
may is one A. Yeah, that's very Rabel certainly doing
what he needs to do. I think to you know,
bring that out of Drake the leadership to being demanding
of his receivers and you've seen his tone a little bit.
Another thing I thought was interesting one of the mccordy
said on the broadcast that was that last year Alex
Vanmdpelt wasn't really in Drake so much and Josh is,
(01:23:05):
you know, very much. And I credit a lot of
Max performance his first year to that to Josh saying, Okay,
here's the look. This is what you know you're gonna be.
You're gonna be looking the right side, you know, like
just giving him the answers to the test before he
asked to actually say hutt.
Speaker 6 (01:23:18):
Yeah, so you have that.
Speaker 5 (01:23:20):
I think it's at fifteen seconds when the communication has
to cut off from the sideline. So if you get
to the line of scrimmage with some time on the
play clock, then technically the offensive coordinator can kind of
play quarterback at the line of scrimmage, and Sean McVay
is like notoriously good at this, like he's probably him
and McDaniels are two of the best at that in
particular and all year along with Mac and then all
(01:23:40):
of Jared Goff's early years in La Sean mcvay's holding
his hand through everything. And the Patriots actually knew that
in the Super Bowl and Super Bowl fifty three, so
they would show one look and then when the communication
would stop, they'd flip it right. They'd show a different
covered structure and kind of put the game on Jared
Goff's shoulders. So, Josh McDaniels, you know, Drake, it's the
line in twenty twenty five seconds, he's going to say,
(01:24:02):
you know you're opening left, you're opening right. They're in
too high, they're single high. Watch this guy, watch that guy,
and this guy's buzzing down.
Speaker 6 (01:24:08):
There's pressure. Look over here, like that type of thing,
and it can really help a young quarterback.
Speaker 1 (01:24:13):
Yeah, well, I hope you can develop that confidence because
confidence is important to have when you're on the road
with bridgetone tires on your car, truck, suv or mini van,
you're riding on tires you could trust Bridgetone tires or
engineered to give you peace of mind so you can
focus on enjoying the journey. So whether you're on your
morning commute, across country trip, or relaxing Sunday drive, Bridgetone
Tires will be with you wherever life's roads may lead.
(01:24:34):
Bridgetone Solutions for your journey available now it's Sullivan Tire.
And of course as we come down to the end,
you guys know what I'm thinking about. It's easy to drink,
it's easy to enjoy. As bud Light, the official beer
sponsor of the New England Patriots, and I think I'll
be cracking one of those open tonight. It'll be nice
and maybe two. But it's been, you know, a great,
great second game, and I just you know, guys, what
(01:24:54):
stands out to me is I just I love the
vibes around this team right now. I love the vibes.
And it's been so long since really felt confident about
the vibes. And I know that's kind of a nebulous
thing and it's open to interpretation, but you know, if
you're just seeing Digs on the sideline watching he's engaged,
he's laughing with guys, he's talking. When you see guys
make big plays. I mean, Rabel's been encouraging this all
(01:25:14):
training camp. Touchdown, big play, Go get your guys, get
over there, celebrate. It's a huge part of you know,
what Mike Rabel wants to instill in these guys, and
I think it's it's really rubbing off. It's just it
feels like a team. It feels like a team that's
coming together. How talented are they? Are they going to
take some lumps. Do they have some inexperience in places? Absolutely,
But at the same time, to me, it feels like
(01:25:35):
you've got some real pieces that are starting to grow,
starting to show out, and that you can feel confident
going forward. I think you can hear from some of
the callers that you know they feel like you got
some mojo bag. You feel like we've got something going again.
And of course the NFL season is the ultimate test,
and who knows what kind of injuries could affect. It's
the season, but I just stay right now. The vibe
(01:25:56):
vibes are.
Speaker 3 (01:25:56):
High, it's cleaner, they're playing hard. You know, the offense
go out and you're not like, oh, this is going
to be a three and out. So it's just exciting
to see, especially in a preseason game. So it just
makes you wonder what's going to come forward.
Speaker 5 (01:26:06):
Yeah, Yeah, whord I would use is culture. Like I
think Duce who made a great point, I don't know
how talented they are. I don't know if the roster
talent is going to be enough to push them to
the level that you hear some win predictions and the
double digits and playoff bursts and stuff like that. I
think that all depends on the talent. That's really what
sets your ceiling. But the floor of the team is
(01:26:27):
the culture. It's the coaching, it's the scheme, it's the foundation,
and all of that really is pointed in a positive
direction and in the right direction. And I just watch
them play now and I feel like they play with energy,
and I feel like they play with passion, and I
can't help but think of the head coach like that's
there taking on his DNA and his fingerprints are all
(01:26:49):
over that. And that's a good place to be because
when you see we've seen it when players are not
necessarily taking the coaching and not necessarily you know, allowing
the coaching to trusting it in that sort of thing,
and it doesn't look that way at all with Mike Rabel.
Speaker 6 (01:27:05):
It looks like the opposite.
Speaker 5 (01:27:05):
It looks like they are building a culture of I
keep coming back to effort and finish, like I think
that's where we're at.
Speaker 1 (01:27:12):
Effort and finish. That's a philosophy. I want to read
this email right now. It's a little bit different, not
the kind of email we usually get, but I think
it's pretty cool. My name is Matthew Gold and I
am a teacher and former head of Sport in charge
of rugby at the John Fisher School in London in
the UK, where I had the privilege of teaching and
coaching David Olajiga during his school years. I followed David's
incredible journey since he moved to the US for college
(01:27:33):
and do American football with immen's pride, and it's been
inspiring to see him progress through the International Player Pathway
program and now be involved with the New England Patriots.
I was wondering if you might be able to share
any appropriate updates point me towards where I could best
follow is continue develop within the development within the team.
I fully appreciate media restrictions and privacy considerations, but I
would be grateful for any insights or public resources you
(01:27:53):
could share. Well, thank you for writing in, Matthew, And
you know it's great. We saw that with Yakob Johnson
a couple of years ago, where you know, some of
these players who are let's face it, there's a lot
of talent around the world and they're really starting to
find ways to tap it. Think he saw David Oligigaz
step up tonight. He had a big play. I would
just say that guy's built like people say Jaberil Peppers
looks like the Incredible Hulk. This guy looks like the
(01:28:14):
Incredible Hulk. I mean he walks around with no shirt
on after practice. The guy's waist is about that big,
and his shoulders no I know, and somebody, I forget
who it was. Somebody pointed him out to me and
was like, my god, that guy is like card from Granted.
So we'll see here Matthew coming up over this last week,
I'm sure he's going to get a lot of opportunities
to play. On Thursday night, you'll be able to watch
(01:28:34):
that game on NFL Network, and you know, we'll see
we'll see if he's done enough to stick around. But
because you have a roster exemption for him, it makes
it a little bit easier to keep him around. And
you know, here he is making some plays again, I mean,
just the suns out, guns out with that guy.
Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
I also want to talk about we talked about culture
during training camp. You know, they're doing the punch out
drills and Crossley did it at the end of the
fourth quarter, just literally what they practiced, what they did
in practice, punched the ball out and broke up a
play at the end there.
Speaker 4 (01:29:00):
Yeah, it's good to see.
Speaker 6 (01:29:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:29:01):
So with the Pathway program, they can carry him as
an extra player on their practice squad and and so
they're able to do that without taking up a roster
spot on the practice squad. If he makes a fifty
three man roster, he has to count towards the roster.
But if he makes the practice squad and then they
can actually carry a seventeenth practice squad player with him,
So it's kind of like a free spot on the
(01:29:23):
practice squad to keep him around. So unless it's like
an utter disaster, there's really no reason like not to
just keep him around and see what happens.
Speaker 1 (01:29:30):
Just have him get off the bus first, you know,
just David him and here you go. Him and key
On go out hand in hand, you know, dressed like gladiators,
like luck. We're down to scare everybody. So we're wrapping
up here in about fifteen more minutes. Love to hear
from you, guys, eight five to five, Pats five hundred,
shoot us an email at what is it Now? With
podcasts at Patriots dot com. We switched our radio station
(01:29:52):
here on the Patriots Postgame Show presented by DraftKings. So guys,
I want to look just a little bit forward here
to this final week. We know we've got a practice
on Monday and around Yeah, quick turnaround. We got a
practice on Monday, it's gonna be in the afternoon. So
the guys, will you know, have some time in the
morning and another practice on Tuesday. You're off I think
traveling f down to New York on Wednesday.
Speaker 8 (01:30:11):
And won't leave you.
Speaker 1 (01:30:12):
They won't leave you. We know they won't leave you.
I just I'm gonna that was hilarious.
Speaker 5 (01:30:17):
Like I obviously am not like checking my phone as
we're on the show and I'm just looking down.
Speaker 6 (01:30:22):
It just keeps my phone over and there's just like
fifteen things that they missed, calls like oh no.
Speaker 3 (01:30:29):
We talked about this a little bit on PU and
like they used to have the four preseason games, how
do you approach the giants, Like are the starters like
you're done?
Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
Good job guys, or.
Speaker 1 (01:30:37):
It's a good Drake.
Speaker 6 (01:30:38):
It's a good point because he's only played.
Speaker 1 (01:30:40):
Yeah, have we seen enough Drake marries?
Speaker 5 (01:30:42):
You know, he's dropped back seven times today, dropped back
eight times. Last week, had the two joint practices in
Minnesota where he repped.
Speaker 6 (01:30:48):
Like sixty times.
Speaker 5 (01:30:49):
So there's a ton of reps there in the joints,
So be interesting to see if they do play them
again at all on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (01:30:57):
I lean towards no.
Speaker 5 (01:30:58):
That's how it's been the last couple of years is
that final preseason game is really kind of still like
the fourth preseason game, where teams really sit everybody and
sort of just play the guys competing for roster spots
or guys that need to get tape out to show
to other teams and like things like that. They kind
of give those guys those opportunity reps. So I would
lean towards no, But who knows, and the other reason,
(01:31:20):
I just would lead towards nose because it is a
short week, short really Saturday to Thursday. We leave on Wednesday,
so you'll miss a day there, so it's it's a
really quick turnaround now.
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
I mean, I've seen what I need to see from
the starters personally, so I'm good.
Speaker 4 (01:31:33):
If they don't suit up, well.
Speaker 1 (01:31:35):
I'll see this question ups. You guys have a second
to think about it, and I'll jump in with somebody first.
But is there any player that you think will play
this week that you'd like to, you know, that you
want to see that you think has a chance maybe
to make the team or make an impression. For me,
it's Javon Baker continuing to try to, you know, see
if he can find some consistency. And I also just
he's not going to play. But this is probably another
question just to buy time for you guys to process
(01:31:55):
a bit. But you know, July Tova, yeah out for
a couple of days in you know, came out. I
think the first two or three days of camp. I
think he suffered a setback, maybe with his calf. We've
seen him around, not really, I haven't really seen him
working out much. Maybe he has been, but I haven't
caught it. You know, he's a player that's it's tough
to make a decision. On part of me thinks like
maybe there is a spot for him just because he
has some versatility. Yes, he's a little bit more in
(01:32:18):
that Jennings mold with size, but I always thought he
ran pretty well and you know, in the right role.
I can see a little bit of a role for him.
I just but it seems to me like they're looking
at Robert Spolane Christian Ellis. Those are maybe the main two.
So I don't know. So I thought to you guys,
if somebody in that last game and any thoughts on
jolyny time.
Speaker 3 (01:32:35):
I have a baker, but I'm split on this Cole
strange just that he's a former first round pick. I
think you can move him on the line. So it's
just interesting and I wouldn't give up yet. I don't
think like there's much to lose. He's familiar with the system,
so it'd just be interesting to see where he stands.
Speaker 5 (01:32:50):
Yeah, all those interior offensive lineman for me would be
in one bucket.
Speaker 4 (01:32:54):
Yeah, that's a fair thing.
Speaker 5 (01:32:55):
Ben Brown, Jared Wilson, Colestrane City so Leyden Robinson, Makai
Butler I thought was decent in the joint practices with
the reps that he got, Like all that entire group,
I feel like is still an unknown. I think at
this point we can probably Sharpie Garrett Bradberry in that center,
like I don't think that's gonna change but before week one.
(01:33:17):
But left guard is still kind of a wide open competition,
and I understand people, you know, I think there's a
lot of questions about left guard at this point, and
you know, did they do enough in the offseason with
that spot. I was kind of clamoring for them to
sign a veteran.
Speaker 1 (01:33:33):
That Schweitzer guy retired. He was the answer, but it
was some veteran depth there that could compete.
Speaker 5 (01:33:39):
I was looking for, like the Morgan Moses of left guards,
Like who is the guy that just for one year
could come in stabilize the position while you train at
Jared Wilson, while you train a Leaden Robinson or one
of these younger players to play that position. Garret Bradberry
at center is kind of the same thing as Morgan Moses,
Like who was that guy at left guard this offseason?
(01:33:59):
I know Joe Toney comes up a lot, but Joe
Toney is a twenty million dollar a year player, Like,
that's not really what we're talking about with that.
Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
So so I got another one, which we haven't talked
about a little interesting. What's the kicking situation here?
Speaker 1 (01:34:11):
That's great, that's that'll take us through the last nine minutes,
no problem.
Speaker 4 (01:34:14):
So I think you keep I think you keep Indy
but bart Parker Rode.
Speaker 3 (01:34:18):
But we were talking about it, like I sometimes feel
more comfortable when he comes on the field.
Speaker 4 (01:34:22):
So I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:34:23):
I would say to the one that Boorgallas missed. Sometimes
the ball just doesn't look right going through the air,
and it was ill, I call it to ten to four.
You know, it's going from ten o'clock to four o'clock
kind of sideways. It's not the you know, twelve to
six and over en. I don't know. It's Parker Roma
has been slightly more consistent now they had they both
had bad days earlier this week, which was the first
time we saw multiple miss kicks. I think otherwise it's
(01:34:45):
been you know, somebody's missing one at most. But it's
a great question, and right now I kind of feel
like you got to maybe find a way to hang
on to both those guys. Fact, I don't think that's crazy,
but maybe Bartha calling in right now.
Speaker 6 (01:34:55):
And Bartha's sprinting from wherever he.
Speaker 1 (01:34:58):
No does he want both? Does want both?
Speaker 6 (01:35:02):
So I'll just this is a joke. But so Barth has.
Speaker 5 (01:35:06):
Made the argument before in the past. I forget which
year it was for keeping two kickers on the fifty
three man roster. It's still under Bill, so it was
definitely in that in the Bill Belichick era where Bill
would be crazy enough to do something like keep two kickers.
I don't think they'll keep two kickers, but you're right.
I think Parker Romo has been better, maybe just slightly,
(01:35:28):
but better. Now does the tie go to the draft pick?
Speaker 1 (01:35:31):
It probably yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:35:32):
And you know, Tisa and I are talking about this
during the game, like you like to think that borgollis
Is ceiling is higher than Parker Romo.
Speaker 6 (01:35:38):
That's why you drafted him.
Speaker 5 (01:35:39):
So even though you might have to live with some
rookie moments for Borgalis to start, is it worth it
in the long run? Whereas if you cut Borgalis and
he gets claimed, then you've lost him completely. So I
think it's really hard like Parker Romo would have had
to really lap Andy Borgollis or and Borgs would have
(01:36:00):
had to look at like the second coming of like
Justin Rorosser or something where he's that kidding the porter
potty And the fact that it hasn't been like that
for Borgalis tells me that he's probably going to be
the kicker. But it's a fair shout like Parker Romo
has been really good.
Speaker 1 (01:36:17):
Yeah, surprising. He came in here late last year. No
one expects it, but it was the show. You just
never know with kickers, it's always so random. A couple
more calls here rolling in Martin, Connecticut. Hey, Mark, thanks
for calling in late here.
Speaker 13 (01:36:29):
Hey guys, thanks for taking my call again.
Speaker 4 (01:36:31):
Sure of course.
Speaker 1 (01:36:32):
What do you gonna have to say is.
Speaker 11 (01:36:33):
A couple of things.
Speaker 6 (01:36:39):
Paul is just irate.
Speaker 11 (01:36:45):
Kendrick Bourne and Jalen Polk.
Speaker 15 (01:36:47):
Are they going to put him on ir and stuff
them away for.
Speaker 11 (01:36:50):
The season or are they going to go to up
list or what's your thoughts on those two guys?
Speaker 1 (01:36:55):
Yeah? Thanks Mark. I I just I think with with
Pol probably headed to IO. I don't know, I have
no idea what happened to him, but it looked like
a re injury of a shoulder. They already injured. We
haven't heard anything. There's been no reports about him unfortunately.
I just it's it's it's too bad. I mean, he's
had he was back, he had setbacks, he was working
his way back, then he was out, and then he's
(01:37:16):
back and now he's out again. So it's just it's
been such a roller coaster with him. I was a
Paul Polk fan. I thought that he was going to
come in and, you know, maybe provide some of the
little bit of maybe what we've kind of seen from
Holland's not exactly the same, but a little bit more physicality.
I don't know, but I have a feeling he's gonna
end up on R and again, could one of those
guys return?
Speaker 3 (01:37:33):
As for Bourne, do you think a pre pre cut
ir or like a dumb for the season are I
think with maybe I agree with that. I think with Bourne,
like he's he's a vat. I still think he has
something to give and there's some teams that could use
a player of his caliber. I think you could maybe
get a Day three pick for him.
Speaker 5 (01:37:51):
So yeah, yeah, I also wonder if Kendrick Bourne, like,
do you do Jacoby Brissett for Philip Dorsett type trade
where it's like, we have this guy that's like a
fringe guy with us, and you have a guy that's
a fringe guy with you, and maybe like we have
an area that we need some more depth, so we'll
trade you Kendrick Bourne, and you'll trade us like.
Speaker 6 (01:38:10):
A left guard right fin sentences and we're done.
Speaker 1 (01:38:15):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:38:16):
Something like that I think might be of interest to
the Patriots. The other thing with Jalen Polk, this is
just my opinion, like I he just doesn't.
Speaker 6 (01:38:26):
Feel like he's a Rabel guy.
Speaker 5 (01:38:28):
Like I just feel like he started off camp and
like he was mysteriously missing practices to start camp. Then
he gets this injury and I'm not saying it's not
a serious injury, but he gets this injury and it's like,
I don't know, at some point, it's like Rabel's like
one of those guys that that is kind of like
no nonsense a lot of the time. And I just
I wonder with Jalen Polk, like does he have the
(01:38:51):
attitude and like the compete and like all that stuff
that like Mike Rabel can really buy into, Like I'm
gonna invest in this guy, like we're gonna keep this
guy and try to work with him.
Speaker 1 (01:39:01):
You feel like anybody from the old regime has to
prove it again or anybody like you know, the key
on Whites, I feel like has proved it. You know,
there are the number of guys that have proved it again.
Speaker 3 (01:39:08):
Barren Jennings, bulk Born, Dugger, like they're just kind of
ye yeah to va. So it's just like are we
going all in with the new culture? Like what can
you do for me?
Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
So it is an interesting one.
Speaker 5 (01:39:20):
Like Spolaine, Ellis and Gibbons, I think are clearly the
top three on linebacker, and I don't think that's gonna
change even when Tavaia is healthy. But like Jennings, to
your key, Tovaia is the fourth linebacker, so that in
case of a rash of injuries in that room, you
have an NFL player that is capable of stepping in.
Speaker 1 (01:39:37):
We're just having some size option at the at the linebacker,
you know, at an inside linebacker position where you're going
to play a big, physical team and you just want
to have an option where you know, maybe I want
to put a bigger body next to Spolene just to
have that you know, off the ball, but we'll see
big decisions coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Here all right, final call, Here go to where the
Patriots are headed on Thursday, New York on Hey Ron,
(01:40:00):
thanks for calling in.
Speaker 11 (01:40:02):
Hey guys, thanks for taking the call, and it's been
a good show. We'll appreciate you guys putting it all together.
But just speaking towards the kickers the board, Gallas kick
that he pulled a little bit left. It looked like
that just for late getting on the field, and I
believe he didn't put his back foot in and get
the nod to the holder till like there was a
second or two left on the play clock.
Speaker 9 (01:40:21):
It just fell off.
Speaker 11 (01:40:22):
I don't know if he wasn't sure if he was
up or Romo was.
Speaker 9 (01:40:24):
Up and got out onto the field late.
Speaker 11 (01:40:26):
But that's just the timing seemed off on that. Evan,
to your comment about the linebackers, what I was calling
in about is just I wanted to see what you
see Givings role as being. I just feel like I
haven't heard much about him and haven't seen much of
them in the preseason games. I don't know if that's
for a plan or if there's something a little more
going on to that, and God, please last point, no
more of a Darian Low at right tackle.
Speaker 9 (01:40:47):
Yeah, let's take it off.
Speaker 1 (01:40:49):
Thanks, Thanks Ron.
Speaker 5 (01:40:50):
Yeah, a good caller on. I saw the same thing
with the special teams. This is one thing that I
will say that not being there hurts because if I
was there, I would have seen if they were laying
off the sideline and things like that. So I thought
that that might have been the case because I saw
the play clock was getting down pretty low, so that
might have been an operation thing.
Speaker 6 (01:41:10):
And uh, maybe we.
Speaker 5 (01:41:11):
Were talking to Jeremy Springer during that. No, I'm just kidding,
you know, like that was that. I did see that,
So maybe that's a good thing to clock. What was
this question about the linebacker Jack Gibbons.
Speaker 1 (01:41:22):
Yeah, Jack Gibbons special teams, backup linebacker, third linebacker.
Speaker 5 (01:41:28):
Uh, special a special teamer if somebody's banged up or
missus a game, spot starter, you know, that sort of thing.
But I think that role has value. I think that
will be a nice addition to the team.
Speaker 9 (01:41:40):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:41:40):
One play to point out for Jack Gibbons during the
joint practices where the twos in the situational work, and
they got down to like the one yard line fourth
and time. I think there was one second left. They
had a chance for one play. They tried to throw
at Jack Gibbons probably could have intercepted it, but just
knocked it down. So it was a play that he
stood out. Obviously. He is a Rabel guy, played under Rabels,
So I think Jack Gibbs has got a spot. Let's
(01:42:02):
finish with this email, and I think this is very
important that Boston Cream writes in, because he always sends
us very very serious emails. He said, are you guys
a little nervous about going too? And oh and clearly
on a path to being twenty two and oh going
into the Super Bowl. Last time this happened, the team
was tense and felt the pressure going to Super Bowl
forty two. Is it best we lose at least one
game this year? I'm gonna say yes, Boston Cream, thank
(01:42:24):
you for chiming in. But no, it's like I said, giants,
I think, right, let's reason the giant. Why do we
have to bring super Bowl forty two? That's fine, so high,
and now we've got to bring back one of the
worst nights of my sports following life but.
Speaker 6 (01:42:38):
That is the worst night of my sports.
Speaker 1 (01:42:40):
How could it ever be toped?
Speaker 5 (01:42:42):
Twenty ten Game seven NBA Finals is the only thing
that comes close.
Speaker 1 (01:42:45):
That one Bruins game seven, no.
Speaker 5 (01:42:48):
Celtics losing to the Lakers, and twenty ten was up there,
but yeah, missing out on nineteen and oh is number one.
There's nothing that tops that.
Speaker 1 (01:42:57):
What are you looking forward to this week? Anything?
Speaker 5 (01:42:59):
I would just say, you know, continued, you know, push
for the roster for some of these guys, like I
think Chishm's probably on the team after today, but Chisholm Baker,
even like a guy like Truman Jones, who I think
has had flashes here this summer. What happens like with
the safety rotation, and how do they sort that whole
thing out with you know, Epps and Hawkins and Woodson
and obviously what the heck is going on with Kyle Duggar.
(01:43:22):
Those guys I think are interesting. So back into the
roster stuff. But I feel pretty good about the fifty
five to sixty guys that have a real chance to
make the fifty three. But now we sort of have
to sort out the last you know, five to seven
spots here.
Speaker 1 (01:43:38):
All right, Well, that's going to do it here for
the Patriots postgame Show presented by Draft Kings. Of course,
we will be back Thursday night. We got an eight
pm kickoff, so it's going to be a late one,
