Speaker 2 (00:21):
Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, a special edition high above the
practice fields here at Gillette Stadium.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
This is a special joint broadcast.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
And what I mean by that the Washington Commanders are
in town for a joint practice with the New England Patriots.
We'll be here for the first four periods to cover
everything that we're allowed to show you, and then after
practice Deuce and Paul will be around to wrap up
everything that they saw today. This is a big day
for you know, both teams, but we only care about
(00:54):
one of them. A good measuring stick for the Patriots
to see where they are against uh, you know, players
that they haven't seen yet.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
So guys, what do you what are you looking at?
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Pretty much everything?
Speaker 5 (01:09):
I totally agree with you about the importance of seeing
what what it looks like against another team. And you know,
another set of personnel, set of schemes, coaching styles and whatnot.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
So I think there's a lot to watch. For me.
It starts and ends with Drake May.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
As you know, I'm always quarterback centric, but I feel
like the offense has shown some signs of being improved
this year this summer, but we haven't seen it on
a consistent basis. So I do still have a little
PTSD to that joint practice that we had last year
against Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
I want to make sure it's a hell of a
lot better than that.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
You know, I've said this before.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
I hope somebody put that tape in from Mike for
Abel because obviously he wasn't here last year.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He needs to see that.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, and and somebody, you know, whether it's Robert Craft
or Milton Williams.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, Milton Williams.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
This can't happen again because you know, sometimes you'll learn
from mistakes, and last year was terrible, so we don't
want to see a repeat of that now.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
I just echo what Paul had to say.
Speaker 7 (02:12):
I think for me today it's really about Drake May
and the competitive period, probably the very last period they're
going to do today. It's gonna be Red Zone Live
eleven on eleven. Those are the periods over the last
couple of practices that you know, we've seen the offense
sputter a little bit. They look good early on seven
on seven when they're putting stuff in when it's not
quite so competitive, But the more competitive it's got, the
more the defense has dominated these practices at the end.
(02:34):
So to me, today it's all going to be a
build up to that final drill to see if Drake
can maybe deliver and help that offense get in the
end zone and start inspiring some confidence in his teammates
that he's going to be the kind of guy when
the game's on the line that he can lead the
team down the field and get critical points.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Absolutely, yeah, I go offensive line.
Speaker 8 (02:52):
I think that's the biggest thing right now if with
this team, Paul, you brought up last year's joined practice
with the Eagles, and that was the most glaring issue
out of that was just how overmatched the Patriots offensive
line was against that Philly front. You know, this Washington
defense doesn't quite have the horses. There's no Jalen Carter
and you know Nolan Smith and those guys in Philly
(03:12):
that not quite at that level. But still you got
those two rookies on the line that you're expecting to
see a lot of today, Will Campbell and Jared Wilson,
And how do those guys look?
Speaker 4 (03:21):
How do they hold up to get to deuce?
Speaker 8 (03:23):
As part of Drake being able to succeed in those
big moments, he's got to be protected. They got to
keep the quarterback up right, and then I think he's
gonna be able to do his thing. But until they
can protect for him consistently, they're gonna have issues offensively.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
So that's where I'm looking. Do we have a participation
report from the commanders? Who's in, who's out? Jayden Daniels
is playing, he'll be out there today. Terry McLaurin, What's
what's the deal with him?
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Now?
Speaker 6 (03:51):
It sounds like Terry mclaurin's in a hold ink.
Speaker 7 (03:53):
You'll see him unless the person the rams was Terry McLaurin.
I did see a jersey, but I don't think that
was him. Unfortunate though, I mean when we first saw
these practices come in, I thought to myself, Wow, Terry
McLaurin versus Christian Gonzales. Maybe no such luck today, but
still plenty to look at in those one on one periods.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Yeah, I haven't seen anything, Fred, I haven't you know,
spent much time doing the Washington prep work. Just for me,
it's it's more about what the Patriots are doing. And
I think, you know, Evan focusing on the offensive line.
I don't really care who's who's rushing the pass or
I want to make sure that they're, you know, at
least doing a better job of protecting Drake May than
(04:32):
they did last year. And it should be it should
be better because Evan's right, they don't have a Jailing
Carter or Jordan Davis and and you know all of those,
you know, Josh Wetz and the guy in Milton Williams
even you know, we talked to him in the offseason.
He brought back, brought up those those joint that joint
practice and all those past rush problems that the Patriots had.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
So it should be better.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
I like the idea of the two rookies for the
reason that you talked about on Patriots Unfiltered yesterday. You know,
get those two rookies out there, let them start, and
let them learn through their mistakes and go through the
peaks and valleys and you should be better off in
the long.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Run, right, Throw them into the fire, see what happens.
It's the same attitude I had last year with Drake May.
It's like, let him make mistakes, let him know what
he's good at, let him know what he's going to
have to work on. And the only way you can
do that is to just, you know, take the shackles
off and let.
Speaker 7 (05:24):
Them taking the shackles off. And I want to see
Jade Daniels today. I mean, what an outstanding rookie year
from him? Is he ready to take that second year leap?
Not as easy without Terry mclaorner around here, but you know,
such an outstanding season from him last year. A lot
of this stuff we're talking about with Drake is you
know what Jayden Daniels did as a rookie. Look at
that playoff run that he had, delivering in the clutch,
getting them in position to it to win big games.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
So you know, curious what he looks like in year two.
Is he maybe added a little weight?
Speaker 7 (05:50):
Is he still you know how much are they still
trying to run him at least in this camp? Is
that going to be part of what their their plan is?
I remember Paul a couple of years ago, we saw
the Giants come here and it felt like the only
thing the Giants could do was Daniel Jones. That was
their one play that looked pretty good. Otherwise it was
a struggle. But I'm sure to look different from the
Commanders today and just exciting young player that's certainly on
the rise for the NFL.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
All right, so around ten o'clock, Mike Vrabel will have
his press conference before practice, and I'm wondering if any
of the scribes will ask him if he's talked to
Dan Quinn and sort of choreographed maybe some of these
sessions too, so they can get certain looks that they.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Want to see.
Speaker 7 (06:29):
I mean, looking at the schedule, it seems pretty straightforward
of you know what you want to accomplish in terms
of seven on seven. You want to do some middle
of the field stuff, early down work. You want to
get a bunch of situations on third down which you
can't control in the preseason game. You don't know what
opportunities are going to rise when a game's unfolding organically.
This gives you an opportunity to say, hey, we want
to get a bunch of reps that this specific situation
(06:50):
that maybe hasn't looked that good or you know, really
that you want to drill down on. So I'm sure
they'll walk through all those different things, but I would expect,
you know, middle of the field, some early down work
you're going to get in the red zone a little bit,
and then that final competitive pierod and not just like uh,
you know, reps of scenarios in situations, but also individuals.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, hey, can you send so and so up against
Will Campbell? No, I'm serious, why not? Yeah, you know,
insigner info. We want to test these guys on things.
I don't know how close close Brabel and Quinn are.
I mean, I know next week you have Kevin O'Connell's.
You have a little bit overlap there with with those
coaching staff. So yeah, we'll see, we'll see what they
put together. But I think generally all these that I've
(07:28):
seen are generally the same. You want to get competitive periods,
you want to get team periods, a little seven on
seven in the red zone, but otherwise have you ever
met Dan Quinn to let him know I'm the guy
with the twenty eight, Well, we saw him in the
airport last year.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
We saw him in the airport.
Speaker 8 (07:41):
Met dan Quinn in the airport in Indianapolis one year
and we're sitting there eating lunch and we saw a
guy walking with the backwards hat on and I was
we were both like and sure enough it was dan Quinn.
But between dan Quinn and Cliff Kingsbury, I would assume
that they that Mike Rabel has some connections with the
coaching staff here in Washington, and I would think that
(08:03):
he overlapped with Kingsbury for you know, a short period
of time at least when Kingsbury was a player here
as well, so you know, you have you have a
connection there too, So I'm sure these staffs know each
other pretty well.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Okay, you can see players arriving, I can't. Can we
turn this monitor on? Traveon Henderson is on the screen.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
I think there's a chance that he could be a
much bigger part of the offense in terms of a
big play threat than maybe some people realize. I still
think he's more of a pass catcher, but I just
watching some of the things that Josh mcdineals has had
him do. I think he maybe once or twice every
practice he's he tries to get him downfield on some
(08:49):
kind of a wheel route or you know, something of
that nature. And I think he's going to be a
big matchup problem for you know, virtually any any linebacker
that that's going to try to run with him. I
just don't think you're going to be able to do it.
And I think they're gonna take some shots with him.
I don't know where else you get the big plays
out of this offense. I don't think they have a
traditional downfield guy, so sometimes you have to be a
(09:12):
little creative.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
But I think Henderson could be a way that McDaniels
can be creative.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I mean we talked about that yesterday and Paul, you
even agreed that this year, compared to last year, Drake
may should have more weapons. Yeah yeah, on paper, Yeah,
on paper, there is at at least a players.
Speaker 5 (09:30):
Too, talented guys that weren't here last year and Henderson
and Diggs.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Yeah, Henderson is their most explosive weapon that we've seen
so far.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
All Right, we've got Mike Rabel coming up to the podium,
so uh, let's go to him.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
I see him glad handing. It's gonna he's gonna take
a few minutes.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
He's talking to somebody right now, So let's let's hold off.
Speaker 8 (09:51):
It's dan Quinn is at the is there right now
talking to who's he talking to? Dan quinn is talking
to the media.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Right, Oh yeah, sometime.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Oh so the staggering that he was going first, Yeah,
all right, so backwards.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Them.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
Well he's got dann Quinn, He's got the hat backwards.
You like that, right? Alex actually likes it, right, Alex
likes the hat backwards.
Speaker 6 (10:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
Yeah, Oh, I don't to be the ruling on that
with the fitted hat backwards though, I don't know if that.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Might fitted hat backwards?
Speaker 6 (10:21):
Is that is that makes you might like?
Speaker 1 (10:23):
This?
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Is that different? The snap back the snap back?
Speaker 6 (10:25):
It's the difference.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
No one likes the snap back.
Speaker 8 (10:28):
The flappert snapback is what's in right now, Paul, that's
that's what all the kids are wearing these days.
Speaker 9 (10:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Not a big fan, all right.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
So as we wait for Vrabel, like I said, it'll
be interesting to see if if our uh peers down
in the media, you know, ask him about the details
of the practice, and then how open he'll be about it.
Speaker 6 (10:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (10:53):
I mean, that's the thing I noticed about Rabel is
he kind of wants to just get it out there
instead of making you waste time trying to figure out
what's going on with that. The other night he laid
it all out. Uh, so maybe we'll get more of
that today. I found when you know those things, it's
a lot nicer. You're not spending so much time deciphering
what's coming up next. You kind of know, and you
can just focus on the competitive period. So yeah, I
(11:13):
think it's going to be a good day for both teams.
And you know, see a lot of a lot of young, exciting.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
Players out here.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Ye see what's going on.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Look like you seem like you were a little surprised.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
For it that I you know, I felt like they
had a couple more weapons.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Well, you know, you're you're very particular about your definition
of what a weapon is. It seems to me like
Jamar Chase isn't a weapon. Jam Chase is not a
web I said, anything lower than Jamar Chase in your eyes,
is it really a weapon?
Speaker 5 (11:42):
No, I would say there's a difference between just having
a bunch of guys and having Stefan Dix.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Well, I mean I'm a little crazy like that.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
That's why and that's why I go to the talent right. No,
and that's why I wanted to, you know, talk to
you about that, because you can also use weapon in
a way like, Okay, who are my weapons on this team? Oh,
it's this is Well, they're not very good, you know,
their weapons, but they're not very good like so.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
And that's what I'm saying by he's not a weapon, Like, yeah,
you have guys that are wide receivers, but the difference
between just having a wide receiver and having Jamar Chase
right or Justin Jeffers.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
He's a favorite guy.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Yeah, so the guy you developed in we're covered.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
We're not quite on that level yet.
Speaker 8 (12:28):
But I am interested with Travon Henderson because, like, statistically,
running backs, their targets usually go for less yards because
they're targeted closer to the line of scrimmage, Like their
average depth of target is not as high as like
a wide receiver would be down the field. So, if
you're running back is your most explosive player on your offense,
how do you then manufacture big plays down the field
(12:52):
coming out of the backfield wheel routes seams. You're getting
him into the seams, flexing him out wide. There's a
million ways to do it, I suppose.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
But yeah, so we've got you can see dan Quinn
and Mike Rabel right now, uh talking about what would
seem like here's what's gonna happen in practice. Vrabel has
a sheet that he's pointing to and going over with
with dan Quinn.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
So they're doing exactly what we just talked about.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Yuh.
Speaker 7 (13:19):
I was reminiscing with Paul because of course, you know,
Jonathan Jones and Tutrick Wise are now on the Commanders, So, uh,
Dietrick Wise among the memorable performances and a couple of
joint practices.
Speaker 6 (13:28):
And go in the middle of a couple of scrumbs.
But love those guys.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
They were you know, you're heard yesterday some of the
defensive players talking about what those guys meant to them
as as leaders around here.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
So they've moved on.
Speaker 7 (13:38):
They're trying to help a team like the Commanders get
over the hump. But good to see a couple of
old old Patriots who you know, contributed to a couple
couple of championships.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Both those guys, all right, yeah, so this this is interesting.
They're they're talking at length about, uh what would seem like,
here's what I want to do.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
What do you want to do? So good stuff? It's
I don't think we've ever.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
All right, So here comes uh, here comes Mike to
the podium right now my practice.
Speaker 9 (14:11):
Is there anything you're looking for outside of what you
typically look for in a regular practice or what's what's
the game?
Speaker 1 (14:18):
What's the goal for you? Well, the goal is just
to be able to.
Speaker 10 (14:22):
Put put the the identity out on the field against
another team, to put the fundamentals that we've put out
there the installation, to be able to do it against
another defense. To be able to adjust to different play
styles of players, players that maybe are you know have
maybe are longer or quicker or you know, stronger, Just
at different play styles of each player throughout this league.
(14:44):
Work with a team that we have a lot of
respect for, a team that was very good and played
their best football late in the season, which is why
they were had an opportunity.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Late in the season in the in the tournament.
Speaker 10 (14:58):
A lot of respect for for DQ and his coaching staff.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
So just as a good fit like today and Friday
to get what you want to see, How do I
use what I'm sorry in.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
Friday, the game and joint practice.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Yeah, the game is an extension of practice.
Speaker 10 (15:15):
The first preseason game is you know, we're gonna we're
gonna play, We're practice today, We've got some situations and
then you know tomorrow we'll you know, be the day before.
But but Friday will be an extension.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Of of a work.
Speaker 10 (15:28):
It'll be a game and it'll give us an opportunity
to go out there. But still just looking at it
as a as a practice opportunity to to continue to
work and get guys the reps that we think that
they're gonna need for the season.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Like when the game plan for the starters specifically great
on Friday.
Speaker 10 (15:43):
Nay, again, focused on today and they'll get a lot
of rep so today, different situations and again, uh, I
would say most everybody that's that's healthy, UH should expect
to play in the game.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
How long they'll play, I don't know.
Speaker 10 (15:57):
But we have to prepare to play in football games
and you know, prepare to win football game.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
So that's the mentality that that we're going to take.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Mike learn the paratum on so far dozens are so
price prices.
Speaker 10 (16:11):
I mean, he's seems to be a quick learner. And
if there's a you know, something that happens in production.
He rarely makes the same mistake twice. This great teammate,
you know, I mean you see him playing with effort
when he doesn't have the ball in his hand, and
you know he's been able to do some things in
a run game, and you know, learns quickly to be
(16:31):
able to move.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Him around at different positions offensively.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Thoses you didn't see out there yesterday, kind of left
practice earlier the day before.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Is that easing him back in still or is that
something he knew he's.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Doing with Probably a combination of both.
Speaker 10 (16:44):
And just want to be smart and you know, make
sure that everybody's playing is the best one for them
to to be.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Prepared for the season.
Speaker 10 (16:51):
So you know, more than I'll do a little bit today,
it won't do much and then you know, we'll see
where he is at the next opportunity, which would be Friday.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
You mentioned spect for d Q. He did it last year,
first year with the team.
Speaker 10 (17:03):
What's the biggest challenge for a coach in his first
season with a team? Just putting a lot of different
people together, figuring out who the core players are, the
ones that you want to bring in the coaching staff,
the organizationally, the support staffs to get it to where
you want it and you feel comfortable about it. And
that's that's what he did. He did an excellent job
(17:25):
of and we're hoping to do the same thing.
Speaker 11 (17:27):
Like I've heard some medical coaches say that they get
more out of joint practices than they do in the
preseason game for kicks out process on that, I.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Think that they're important. I think that you know, they
may not be.
Speaker 10 (17:42):
Live, but I think that there's still great tempo, there's
great speed, the competitiveness.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
But I as I mean that the games are important.
Speaker 10 (17:49):
That the games to go out there and operate and
see the penalties and the speed of it and the
timing of it, the time with the two minute and
all those differentferent things and tackling and being able to
get get guys at the ground, being able to break tackles,
you know, playing cut box and all those things that
we don't see in practice.
Speaker 12 (18:09):
Like you guys, obviously your defense is to see Drake
May on a daily basis in practice. But what kind
of uh maybe different challenge does Jayden Daniels post.
Speaker 10 (18:17):
Well, again, we'll have to see what they call and
what Cliff calls and what they run. But he talented,
makes great decisions, but also very fast. And you know
while he scrambles and he can run with the football,
you know rarely takes a big hit, which is very
impressive for for any player, especially a quarterback. And he's
(18:41):
not the not the biggest guy, but you know, you
just don't see him taking too many hits when he
runs like.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Marcus, Brian get he increase reps in th starters, lost
a couple of viass.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
What have you seen from the seven drund page this offseason?
Speaker 10 (18:54):
Marcus has gotten better is you know, trying to compete
at left tackle and right tackle, and you know, when
somebody goes down or they're not available, we just put
the next guy in there and then we evaluate him
and if he earns the opportunity to stay there, he
stays there. And Marcus has done that.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
I think he's gotten better each and every day played
the left, switched over and played on the right. And
you did a nice job the other day. At the
end of.
Speaker 12 (19:16):
Practice, into the consideration that having with one to in practice.
Speaker 10 (19:21):
Have two because Washington only wanted to come up for
one day.
Speaker 8 (19:27):
Mike any words of the players about the fights and stuff.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Like that out here.
Speaker 10 (19:31):
We want to practice the same way we practice against
our team, and that's by playing physical and aggressive and
not doing stuff that hurts the team.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
And you know, certainly don't expect.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
Any of that, and if it does, we'll have to
handle it accordingly. And I just you have to be
able to play competitively and physically without you know, letting
your emotions get the best of you.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Any plans for a live tackling to everything like that, No, well,
you're when.
Speaker 12 (19:57):
To come to just to kind of fall up on
the Gene Daniels question. Heard your defensive line guys talk
about being aggressive.
Speaker 6 (20:02):
And getting off the ball fast.
Speaker 12 (20:03):
Do you have to against the more athletic quarterback temper
that for some guys.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
I mean, again, you just have to be coordinated.
Speaker 10 (20:10):
You have to be relentless and coordinated in your rush
and based on some calls, and you know, if you're
not going to be, you know, where's going to be
some scrambles today that we need to coach off of
and and see, so that's that'll be a good thing.
And uh, you know, we haven't talked too much about it.
We're going to go and practice, and then I think
the best thing will be to be able to correct
(20:31):
it and and show it and figure out what we
need to do if we were going into a game, and.
Speaker 12 (20:36):
Like what amount of preparation that you put in with
the players to familiarize themselves with.
Speaker 10 (20:40):
Just a little bit, you know what I mean, just
a little bit, just enough for maybe they're they've show
us some things that we haven't done on either side
of the football, and making sure that they're they're prepared
for some of that if they choose to run the
quarterback in the red zone or whenever they want to
do it, or some of their plays that we maybe
haven't seen. And then defensively, some of the looks that
he may or may not get that we haven't gotten
(21:02):
from our defense. So I want to try to give
the players the best opportunity to come out here and
be evaluated and so that they feel comfortable and they
feel like.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
They've maybe seen something. If they haven't, then we have
to adjust to it pretty quickly. You were a teamate
at Cliff Kingsbury for a relatively short period of time.
What if anything do you remember about him as a player.
He wasn't better than Tom Brady.
Speaker 10 (21:24):
Uh, just you know, Cliff, Cliff's a good friend. There's
I mean, there's a handful of coaches over there that
I've that I've played with in the league, whether that's
a year or you know, in Larry's case, eight years.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
So they got a good staff.
Speaker 10 (21:39):
They've got a good mix of guys that have played
in this league and other guys that that didn't.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
But that's a good coaching staff that they have.
Speaker 10 (21:45):
And you know, Cliff's really done a nice job everywhere
he's been offensively.
Speaker 11 (21:50):
When you ever get him got together talking about this practice,
are there situations where they'll say to you, Mike, at
this point, we want to see something that you'll set
something up that he wants to see his team against
and vice versa.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Yeah, we talked.
Speaker 10 (22:02):
I mean that the scheme is we don't get into
the scheme so much. Is more situationally, what do we
want to see as it relates to first, second, third, third,
and long. Maybe we're going to be in a no
huddle period or you know, how do you want to
operate or we'll be on the ball. Let's get some
red zone in, Let's get some red zone seven on seven.
(22:23):
You know the quarterback can can look to us first
read got to get the ball out or probably extend
the play, which is realistic in pro football in the
red zone.
Speaker 12 (22:33):
Like the guys that you know, their ticket to make
the roster be on special teams.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
You just mentioned Larry Zoe.
Speaker 12 (22:39):
Are there Larry Izzo qualities that you look for when
you're looking at special teams guys?
Speaker 10 (22:45):
Well, our passion for playing football, competitive spirit production, I
think would.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Be the biggest thing.
Speaker 10 (22:52):
Understanding speed and space and blocking angles and you know it,
it's a skill and it's an art and certainly Larry
uh did it as well as anybody, So I would
say that the competitive spirit would probably be at the
at the top of the list of looking for adjectives
to describe Larry.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
All right.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
That was Mike Rabel and uh he addressed the media
and like we thought, uh, there was the question about
are you gonna, you know, talk with Dan quinn and
come up with certain scenarios and yeah, and so uh good,
I mean we we said we actually saw it.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
I don't know if that's the first time they talked
about practice, but certainly they were going over things that
they were expecting to see out in the field before practice.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
Also Dan Kuinn said Terry mcclorin did not make the
trip for anyone who was interested, not that we expected
to see him practice anyway, but and also Mike Brabel
said no life tackling today, So just something to note.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Yeah, I would expect that. I mean, we've seen a
lot of joint practice. Is we've never seen bringing people
to the ground. Well yeah, all fights, but not that
they wanted. Yeah, not not intentionally right. Uh, as you
can see Drake may is warming up out on the field.
Speaker 7 (24:15):
I just thought it was interesting too that Brabel kind
of mentioned how Washington peaked at the end last year,
you know, to help get them into the playoffs and
make a little bit of a run there. And that's
something I think he's very aware of. I mean, I know,
you know, yesterday Greg but Our said he thought there
was a light pract one of the lightest practices training
camps he's ever seen. Uh, you know, maybe that's connected
to Rabel's philosophy of managing some of these guys. We've
(24:37):
seen extensive plans with that, talked about Morgan Moses's plan.
So I think we're just getting to know Mike Brabil
as a coach now and a little bit of the
ins and outs what he believes, especially here in training camp.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Yeah, so as we uh wait to get you know,
some of the drills going, I will say the place
is packed.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
There's a lot of people. There's a lot of people
coming up the ramps. Yeah, you know, to our right.
And it's typical for a joint practice. I mean, the
weather is really conducive for it. It's not oppressively hot.
It's a it's a nice, nice day, not not a
really hot day. And I'm looking at the stands behind you, Freddy,
they look like they're pretty pretty packed in.
Speaker 4 (25:13):
The hill looks like it's pretty packed in.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
So we see a steady stream of people coming.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
So, uh, I don't know, thirty forty thousand, maybe.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
Thirty five let's go, let's call it thirty five thousand.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Okay, conservatively, Okay, Yeah, no, I mean listen, it's a Wednesday.
It's a beautiful day, a little overcast, but it's perfect
for uh football practice.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Uh so why not. It's free, bring the kids, find
a place.
Speaker 6 (25:40):
It's a great time.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
Yeah, we're gonna go to one day. We've been saying
since the spring. This is the day that you would pick,
you know, the joint practice day. So there'll be a
lot of different things to keep an eye on, you know,
like we talked about one on ones and what that
might mean for linemen and for receivers and backs, and
then we talk about seven on seven in the red zone.
You just or might be able to talk about that
a little bit. And you know how it you know,
(26:05):
quickens up the pace the clock for the quarterback. You
almost always have to move, you know, down in the
red zone when you're doing even seven on seven. So
you know, to see some of those things, see some
of the reactions that there should be a lot to.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Watch, absolutely, and I think so after this obviously there
won't There'll probably be a walk through tomorrow, but it
won't be open to the public. And then we have
the preseason game on Friday. Players will be off on Saturday,
as they typically are after a game. There'll be a
public practice on Sunday. So is that your last opportunity
(26:37):
if you want to come down and watch a practice, correct, Yeah,
so that's it Sunday.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
This boy, this went fast, huh. It came fast and
it went fast.
Speaker 8 (26:46):
Yeah, there'll be a few more practices open to the
media for us, but.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
I'm talking about the public. Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 8 (26:52):
We'll be out here until the end of preseason week
number three. Yeah, so we'll have a few more for
you that we can talk about and tell you what's
going on. But Sunday is the last chance for the public.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
So the Patriots will be in blue today.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
Yeah, yeah, all blue for the Patriots, you see, not
just not just the defense.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Yeah, you see Pop Douglas and mccollins and some of
the other wide receivers kind of warming up in their blues.
Is it's kind of weird because they've been in white
every day and the defense is in blue.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
But now we're one team. We're back to one team.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
We're all one.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Yeah, Patriots United. We are all Patriots, and so there
is there. They're gotta be wearing their blues.
Speaker 7 (27:36):
Well, a big day for this guy right here, Pop Douglas,
who's had a really good camp, showing off his arm,
showing off his arm a little bit. Well, he tried
to show it off in the stadium. He should he
probably should have ate that one and threw it out
of bounds. But you know the other guy, I want to
talk about right next to those MATC Collins, which, no,
I'm not going to talk about his hanging shirt, Paul,
(27:56):
don't worry, but I do want to say, you know,
when we were out in Vain, and I brought it
up a couple of times, like I was enamored with
DeVante Adams and him and Hunter Renfro were obviously the
engines of that offense, but I just was impressed with
seeing mac Collins on the field that I remember, you know,
just watching him a little bit and saying, man, he
seems like a really good compliment to these two other
guys going and looking. I mean, he's kind of bounced
around the league, and at that point, he kind of
(28:18):
bounced around the league. But I think everybody took note
when he came back last week off of pup that
he was kind of right in the mix. And I
continue to think that he is somebody that we're not
really mentioning enough. That is that I think Josh McDaniels
has a real plan for both special teams and maybe
some special spots on offense. But he's got some size,
he's got some experience. Loved the leadership that he brought.
(28:40):
I think he's a real wild card in that room.
Speaker 8 (28:42):
Yeah, I just wonder, like, where's the line of taking
the reps from the younger guys, because I can tell
you right now there's going to be a lot of
people that if Mac collins is taking reps from Kyle Williams,
they're not going to be happy about that. And either
there's Kyle Williams or Booty or if they keep Javon Baker, like,
those guys have more ceiling, they have more potential. So
(29:04):
I agree with you that mccollins I think is going
to be here and have a role. But is it
depends on how you want to look at it. I
suppose whether or not that's a good thing that he's
going to be getting reps over Kyle Williams, I think
is probably the biggest Well.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
I mean, listen, when we talk about young guys getting reps,
we talked about will Campbell and Wilson. They're gonna get
reps over veterans, but they're better. Yeah, Okay, I would
say the same thing for wide receiver. If Kyle Williams
right now is better than Mac Collins, I don't think
he is at this point. And we need to get
(29:41):
this offense rolling we need to, you know, get it
going early as much as possible. So in that case,
I want the best wide receivers out there. I'm not
worried about young guys getting reps and getting developed. I
want guys that can function in this offense. For Drake
Man to be able to execute.
Speaker 8 (30:01):
Yeah, that's more than fair. I just know that that's
not how a lot of fans are going to look
at it from the outside looking in, because they want
the potential and they want the upside of the younger players.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
And that's all.
Speaker 8 (30:11):
That's all I'm saying, is you know, I think that
it's a hard sell to say that we're gonna have
a journeyman like Mac collins play over the guy that
we just drafted sixty ninth overall and has some potential,
that's all.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
And I just wonder where that line is, you know.
Speaker 8 (30:26):
And I was also thinking about this and as it
relates to Kendrick Bourne too, like do you you know
they're not exactly the same type of receiver, But if
you already have the mccollins of like if Kyle Williams
is not quite ready, or if Kayshawn Booty is not
taking that next step you have the steady veteran that
you can put in there.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
Do you really need.
Speaker 8 (30:43):
Two of those kinds of guys with Kendrick Bourne and
Mac Collins or like, does that allow does mac Collins'
involvement allow you the freedom to keep a Chisholm, to
keep a Baker, to keep a Polk as sort of
a developmental player on the right.
Speaker 7 (31:00):
Yeah, it's so clear how much more Mac Hollins would
kind of do than Kendrick Born would overall on the roster,
you know, just in terms of special teams, in terms
of being a little bit different within that wide receiver room.
I think you make a great point of It's it's
really just a question of you know, I don't know
if Kyle Williams looks ready to jump in, you know
and take a big role right out of the gate,
So you know, you do I see it as to start,
(31:21):
You've got Booty who's had a strong camp, continues to
contribute on the outside, stretches the field a little bit
in Hollands, so you know, you mix and match those
guys a little bit, but absolutely you got to give
Kyle Williams every opportunity to work his way in and
you know, if he can bring an element of explosive
downfield playmaking, which I think is a little bit limited,
like EEV said with with Hollands and Booty, then that
(31:42):
could really take this offense to the next level.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
No, I agree with that, everything being even, I always
go for the younger guy, you know, get them in there.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
But I don't think it's even right now.
Speaker 7 (31:50):
No, And I mean it's about you know, it's a
long season two and you want to make sure. I mean,
I just I mean, the easiest comparison to make is
to Javon Baker, who you know, I think Mac Hollins is,
he is what he is, but he's a picture of
consistency in what he does. So you know, maybe that's
an example of somebody like Jaymon Baker where it might
be a little bit more feast or famine up and
down that he can find some of that steadiness that
(32:11):
Mac Collins is trying to pass along to those younger guys.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
But you know what, you know, having said what I
just said, I still would love to see whenever they
can get Kyle Williams in there, you know, get it,
get him some reps. Sure, you know I'm talking about
during the regular season. Uh so we're seeing uh, Matt Collins,
and I mean.
Speaker 7 (32:32):
He looks the far I just looking at him, I'm like,
this guy's a beast, like you know, I mean, I
know he is what he is.
Speaker 6 (32:37):
But at the same time, it's a nice place.
Speaker 8 (32:39):
And I'm not trying to dump on Matt Collins. There's
nothing against him whatsoever. I just I know how the
mind of the fan works and that they want to
see the young guys, they want to see the rookie,
they want to see the second year guys, pull Baker, Chisholm,
Yep Williams.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
But you know what Matt Collins is. We don't know
what Kyle Williams is. Kyle Williams.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
Williams may have Larren, he might have a bigger ceiling
and you know that That's what you know, people are
going to be wondering about now.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
Based on you know, eleven days of camp.
Speaker 5 (33:08):
I think it's been a little bit of a slow
uh you know, indoctrination for Kyle Waims.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
I think he's he's flashed a little bit.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
We've seen some big plays from him, but we've seen
other periods of time where he's been you know, just
sort of out there and not really showing up as much.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
So I think there's some some talent there.
Speaker 5 (33:24):
There's certainly, you know, a skill set that is intriguing,
but we want to see it on a more consistent basis.
Speaker 8 (33:30):
I think the biggest thing with him right now is
the physicality at this level. Is he going to be
able to get off press coverage? Is he going to
be able to use his body to create separation at
the first two levels of the defense. He can run
by people on the outside, We've seen that already, but
is he gonna consistently be able to go out there
and finish through contact and get off physical coverage that
(33:52):
you're going to see at this level at his size
and at his just the build that he has, I
think is something.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
That I've noticed.
Speaker 8 (33:59):
Like the other day we you know DJ James, Like
you ran a little comeback route and DJ James is
just all over it and broke up the pass. You know,
like those types of things. You know, you got to
carve out space for yourself. You got to be able
to get open at the top of the route, like
you have to figure out ways to use your body
and your physicality to also win at this level along
with your speed, so.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Are the commanders on the lower field were going to
warm up separate there in the park.
Speaker 8 (34:25):
I like when they do that because then you kind
of come together and it's like a It's like a
moment entered thunder.
Speaker 4 (34:29):
The West Side story.
Speaker 6 (34:30):
Yeah, don't you remember in Green I love that as
my favorite.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
God, it was like you were entering the college.
Speaker 6 (34:37):
Right, They're just waiting for it.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
It's crazy. Yeah, it was insane.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Yea.
Speaker 6 (34:42):
I have a question for you.
Speaker 7 (34:43):
Did you feel like Williams could have done maybe come
back to the ball a little bit more on that
final interception and in stadium, you know, we talked about
Drake probably not throwing the ball with Alex Austin sitting
on that route, but I kind of felt too part
of it might have been Kyle Williams needing to come
back to the ball.
Speaker 8 (34:59):
Yeah, maybe a compete, Yeah, maybe come back for the ball,
or even just like sell the fade a little bit
more to get him to have to bail out and
bite on it, or even just like this is a
manute that I would never know if it was the
case or not, but like, is he writing the right.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Depth of the route?
Speaker 8 (35:15):
Right, you know, they like get him off all these
little things, Like I just wonder if he's clearly fast
and he's clearly explosive and talented in that regard. I
just to play every single down in the NFL, you
have to be on the p's and q's at all
times and all those little things. Because if you're supposed
to break off your route at eight yards and you
(35:36):
break it off at ten, that's pick six going the
other way.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Like, that's how it works at this level.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
And it's easy to look at a play like that.
We all watched him, are like, man, you know, what
does Drake may do?
Speaker 6 (35:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Yeah, you know, he threw the ball right to Alex Austin.
But you just brought up five different scenarios, Evan that
any one of which could have been a much more
mitigating factor as to why that play happened, and none
of them really had anything to do with Drake May.
Now doesn't mean he should have thrown the ball, and
doesn't mean it's a good play by the quarterback by
any means. But it might have been a bad route,
(36:08):
it might not have been at the right depth, it
might have been not selling something something.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Didn't want his quarterback throwing a flat foolat footed corners, right, which.
Speaker 8 (36:17):
Makes you think that it was probably more on the
quarterback than it was on the receiver. But we would
never know these little things because we're not in the
playbook and we're not in the film rooms, in the
in the practice meetings and all that kind of stuff.
So I just wonder where that that goes.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Sounds to me the rabel's putting it on both of them. Yeah,
the receiver was flat footed and may should have corner.
The corner was flat throw it to a flat footed corner.
That means he's sitting on the.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
Round, Like, maybe you just got to he had to
sell the route a little bit better. Like that's a
coaching point for Kyle Williams. We're talking about the receivers
in the media tent down there, saying that Stefan Diggs
is not on the field.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
I haven't them off yet, but that doesn't mean he's
not out.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
There, So I don't.
Speaker 8 (37:00):
I don't know if he's not going to be participating
in this prize today or not, but as of right now,
he is not out there and practice has started, right,
we're past that.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Well, that's disappointing. Yes, definitely.
Speaker 7 (37:13):
But at the same time, us like Carlton Davis is
out here in pads. He's been mostly a walk through participant,
but he's amping up the That's a good developation a
little bit. But I am curious about Diggs.
Speaker 6 (37:25):
Got to keep him under rap.
Speaker 8 (37:26):
Maybe that's what it is, Deuce. I'm gonna take the
glass out full view on that, but.
Speaker 6 (37:30):
He don't get to see what we're doing with digs yet.
Speaker 8 (37:32):
He's been out there for every practice so far. There's
been no signs that anything with the knee or anything
like that of any setbacks whatsoever. Yesterday was a walkthrough
and he was here. Yeah, so it's not like he
did anything physical yesterday that that would have knocked him
off the field.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Might just be as simple as they don't want to
subject him to any possibility of contact yet, right, you know,
it could be a very simple I did.
Speaker 6 (37:55):
I did catch a video of him yesterday walking out
of five.
Speaker 4 (37:57):
Guys here, and I did I did see that.
Speaker 7 (38:00):
So maybe he got himself a you know, a double burger,
and he's digesting it.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Well, maybe it's like, well, if you're not gonna have
mclorin out there, then we're not going to have right right.
Speaker 8 (38:09):
It's always funny when you see those videos though, because
it's like very clearly Patriot place. We all can recognize
it right off the stars.
Speaker 6 (38:17):
They're just like us. Yeah, wants a giant trough fries? Yeah, trough,
just take the whole fry later with you.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
They do have good fries, they do, they do, Freddy,
I agree.
Speaker 6 (38:29):
Still like in and out more, still like in and out?
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Really fries, well done, they're coming, I heard.
Speaker 6 (38:35):
Yeah, we're moving slowly east naturally.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
One of the more overrated experiences I've ever had.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
There.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
We go.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
It was fine, It was just fine.
Speaker 7 (38:45):
He didn't get an animal style bad take.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
Yeah, the fans just keep piling in here.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Yeah, I would say five guys falls into that category. Two.
Just one of the more overrated experiences I've ever had.
Speaker 5 (38:59):
Apparently, you don't need people to just talk about these
places like it's a good burger as opposed to tell
me my life is.
Speaker 8 (39:06):
I know, I know everybody is like, why are we
talking about burgers? This is why watching this whenever, because
I you know, Deuse and I both lived out in California,
so we've had in and out a ton and I.
Speaker 4 (39:19):
Always say to everybody it's a fast food burger. Like,
don't the way it was described to me initially, maybe
I wouldn't feel.
Speaker 8 (39:25):
Because everybody does what Paul is saying, and I'm saying,
it's just better than McDonald's and all the other fast
food burgers.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
It's not like it's like and I would agree with this.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
We have any sponsors here that we have to worry about.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
See who we can offend you.
Speaker 7 (39:40):
I'll keep it if you guys allow me a quick
thirty second story. I went with Paul last week for
the first time to read Robin, which you know Paul,
he goes to Red Rob every Friday. And it was
like I was walking into Cheers with Norman Cliff Clay.
They're like Paul, they walk in, the drinks are already
put down. Everybody gets it's an appetizer fry. I've never
(40:01):
seen that before.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
They're like, it's not advertiser fries, and so grow up.
Speaker 7 (40:06):
And so they have their weight, their waiter, who's their
guy who hooks them up?
Speaker 6 (40:10):
I mean, and why they didn't know what deal to use.
I mean it was that I didn't realize their.
Speaker 7 (40:14):
Celebrity have a s oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, wow
they were like, dude, don't go in first.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
We gotta go first, so we can, you.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
Know, And everyone's like, hey, Norm, you know that's.
Speaker 6 (40:23):
Exactly what it felt like.
Speaker 5 (40:24):
Oh that's funny, which I guess finance.
Speaker 6 (40:27):
I knew he went there every Friday forever.
Speaker 7 (40:29):
I just didn't realize the extent that the welcoming community
of Red Robin were huge fans of of Paul and should.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
I continue to tea Red Robin also overrated?
Speaker 6 (40:40):
It was a pretty good burger.
Speaker 4 (40:41):
You're just killing You're killing all the sponsors.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Is there any place that you've been to Paul that said, Wow,
this really lived up to.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
The radurg rated, really lived up to the hype.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
That's a good question, Fred. I'm gonna have to give that.
I don't want to. I don't want to just like
flippant weight come up with you. Sure, Okay, I will say,
like they the spring rolls at Davio's.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
I had heard about, oh steak, Yeah, and they lived
up to it.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
Okay, that's a very very specific answer to that.
Speaker 8 (41:09):
But so we got the owner walking on the field
with the special guest. I believe it might be our house.
Speaker 6 (41:18):
Oh, John bond Jovi, there you go.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
Oh really, let's go.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
Maybe we can get eyes on that whoever's operating camera.
Speaker 6 (41:26):
Yeah, they're walking right out of the tunnel right now.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
I heard we're halfway there camp right. Well, Oh I
got more, I have more. I got a lot more.
Speaker 7 (41:37):
Yeah, I wanted dead or alive. Yeah, blood on blood,
I mean just I celebrate his whole catalog, to be honest.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
The other one, you and my wife.
Speaker 7 (41:48):
Those are my first two CDs I ever bought. We're
still free one wet in New Jersey.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
I know it's sacrilegious around here, but it was never.
Speaker 6 (41:53):
A big no.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Yeah, so you know the songs, but yeah, kind of
a chick ban huh.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
My wife loves him, that's fair. I mean, there's nothing
wrong with that. Though.
Speaker 7 (42:05):
When they played they did all be There for You
was our seventh grade dance theme song, and that just
you know that memories, you know, taking me back.
Speaker 5 (42:13):
He has a very specific example of his childhood for everything.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
Here we are for everything.
Speaker 7 (42:19):
It's definite, like dancing with your seventh grade not your girlfriend,
just your friend that you weren't with.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
I'll tell you he's like seventy years old.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
He looks great.
Speaker 3 (42:25):
He looks great, you know.
Speaker 13 (42:28):
Son have to see if I can get run of
one of those creep picks for for Beth later, like
your boy was here today, here you go.
Speaker 8 (42:37):
I do like Living on a Prayer is a really
good stadium song, Like you get the crowds.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
Especially when he's here in the suite and you can
show him singing along with the fans.
Speaker 4 (42:49):
Which which playoff run was that they all blend together.
Speaker 6 (42:53):
There's so many of them.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
I taught you, well, yeah, that's exactly how you did.
Speaker 8 (42:56):
There was one playoff run I remember in particular where
I think they it was a divisional round game, and
they were kareaming whoever they were playing, and it was
like we're halfway there, like to the you.
Speaker 4 (43:06):
Know, to the Super Bowl, probably the Colts, I don't
remember which one it was. That him in the in
the owner's box.
Speaker 8 (43:15):
Singing it is that Blount Blount.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
I'm still learning, all right. So that's that. Let's uh,
we've seen them. We can probably go back to watching
players now.
Speaker 7 (43:29):
I think I see Donnie Amandola down there, Diana Rossini.
Speaker 6 (43:33):
There's a cast of thousands of stars.
Speaker 4 (43:35):
Now, maybe Danny A.
Speaker 8 (43:36):
Mondola in Chisholm might have a little conversation later because
Spider Man, that is the receiver that Josh McDaniels made
a cut up of for Chisholm to watch was not Edelman,
It wasn't Welkert, was actually Danny A.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Mendola.
Speaker 8 (43:51):
So he seems like there's a comp there for for
Josh like that that's the one that he sees the most.
Speaker 6 (43:58):
Is gonna will this intox just for Paul, like.
Speaker 8 (44:01):
I want him to make the team, and I want
him to be good, just so that I want him
to be good too.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
No, no, the team, No, don't don't go. Don't do
that whole thing.
Speaker 5 (44:11):
I just don't want to see what I've seen for
eleven days and have him make the team.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
The dropping the endstadium practice.
Speaker 3 (44:17):
There he is.
Speaker 6 (44:19):
Right, he's looking good. He's got the cut off thing.
He's very fashionable. I guess that's probably a look now.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
Hi, Hi Danny.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
He's got the uh what do you call those types
of glasses, crystal glasses?
Speaker 7 (44:33):
I thought you were gonna say, like a baja like
one of those things they wear, you know, the bajas cardo.
Speaker 3 (44:38):
But you know, the thing.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
The thing about guys like Edelman and Amondola it's it's yes,
technically they were so sound, but they were also clutch,
like the moment didn't scare them. In fact, they they
almost got better in the big moments. And I don't
know if he can teach that. Yeah, I don't know
if that you can teach that.
Speaker 5 (44:58):
But that that that led to up Dronkowski, you know,
with the great nickname that he came up with, playoff Danny.
Speaker 4 (45:04):
Playoff Danny playoff very imagine.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
You know.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
And it's it's not about the amount of catches that
they have. He when.
Speaker 4 (45:12):
Was the epitome of that guy.
Speaker 5 (45:14):
He didn't have a lot of volume, but every time
he made a catch, it was important.
Speaker 8 (45:18):
Right because I was gonna say, like Edelman was kind
of both. He had the volume. That's why he's going
into the Patriots Hall of Fame. Ammondola was like that
that the clutches, like the catch against the Jaguars and
the ANFC Championship games.
Speaker 4 (45:29):
Such an underrated catch. Yeah, it stands out.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
I mean, yeah, we were rolling, you know, the Patriots
were rolling and the Jaguars are giving them everything they
could give him on that day they came really close
to losing that game.
Speaker 8 (45:41):
He caught the touchdown and the fourth down catch too
stop he caught he caught the fourth down catch too right,
Paul the it was like fourth and like twelve. They
had to convert it near the middle of the field.
I think Ammadola in cut over the middle of the field,
I think was what moved the chains.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
Rember, I'm the one to one in the end zone
zone was that was special.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Like the game winning touchdown was just unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
And Gronk is another guy that the moment didn't scare him.
You know, his abilities were so good that it gave
him the confidence in any moment to just execute.
Speaker 6 (46:18):
Do you give that credit?
Speaker 7 (46:19):
And I mean, I know we give tom Brady a
lot of credit, but do you give some of that
credit to Tom Brady? Just you have that belief in
him and therefore you just you don't doubt. You know,
if you have there's three seconds left on the clock
and you're within striking distance, that you've got a chance.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
And you know, it puts you on alert because they know,
in a big moment, if I'm open, if I run
my rounte and I do what I'm supposed to do,
the ball's coming to me. And so like you know,
expect it.
Speaker 7 (46:43):
Yeah, And then that's why I tied it to what
I said about Drake at the top of the show, like,
start to inspire that confidence in your guys a little
bit today. I mean, it's a joint practice. He's not
gonna change the trajectory of his career with a great,
you know, last drill today. But I just think that's
a cumulative thing. And when he starts to make plays
down the end and the competitive periods and guys start
to believe, and then.
Speaker 6 (47:02):
You know, you really start to pick up some momentum
for the offense, you.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Know, and you know, getting back to the quarterback, that
comes back to a lot of times we're like, you know,
throw the ball, just get rid of it, even if
it's not perfect.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
Just play the play, you know, play the play through.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
And if it turns out to be a pick or
guy's not in the right place and the ball hits
the ground. So what get used to running the play
as it's written up, as it's drawn up.
Speaker 8 (47:27):
That comes back to the I think the biggest thing
with those types of routes that those guys would run
was the anticipation. Yeah, you know, Brady just knowing how
to read their body language, seeing the coverage the same way,
those conversations year over year every year. You know this
corner does that, I'm gonna throw it here. If he
does this, I'm gonna throw it there. The throw in
(47:47):
Super Bowl fifty one to Ammondola or is it Hogan
on the sideline there.
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Got each of them, They got the cover, two.
Speaker 8 (47:53):
Corners squatting and Brady just throws it right on the
inside shoulder and he knew exactly where the ball was going.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
Like those types of things are.
Speaker 8 (48:00):
I've seen a little bit of that brewing with Drake
and Pop Douglas, Like I think there's they're starting to
find that sort of rhythm, but that takes years and
years of repetition. That's not something that happens overnight or
even in one training camp Like that's that was Amandola, Edelman,
Gronk playing with Brady for a decade.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
That that got them to that point.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
Ye, So we see Drake under the watchful eye of
Josh McDaniel's in the background.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
I don't know how you guys feel, but I feel
like Josh Dobbs has been a little bit better the
last couple of practices that we've seen him.
Speaker 3 (48:34):
Yeah, okay, I thought he was.
Speaker 5 (48:35):
I thought he struggled quite frankly, and the first several
practices that we saw, I thought there were a lot.
Speaker 4 (48:39):
Of ears into traffic.
Speaker 5 (48:41):
Yeah, and I think they've seen a little bit better
execution medium, you know, for him, you know, you have
to consider you know, like the system too, you know,
not not a ton of familiarity there, so you know,
maybe it did take him a little while. I think
he's been a little bit better the last couple of practices.
Speaker 7 (48:57):
It was it you, Paul that said, I think you
just like you like the style of just let it rip.
If you're gonna be the backup, like just get in.
Speaker 5 (49:02):
There and and and you know, especially in practice, like
Fred just said, you know, get on your back, food
and run a play, try to have some kind of
timing and rhythm to it.
Speaker 4 (49:10):
And you know, it's practice. There's supposed to be mistakes, there's.
Speaker 5 (49:12):
Supposed to be some you know, rough, rough patches, and
you know, he's a veteran, he's been around, perfectly capable backup.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Okay, so we are actually in the last period that
we're allowed to show you. Uh so we're gonna be
wrapping up soon. But before we go, I have a
special guest. Just because you're watching this show, We're gonna
give you a little inside baseball, little uh little preview of.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
What's gonna happen during the season.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
And I don't know if we're ready here, Matt, Matt,
but we have a new host for our pre and
postgame show and her name is Claudia Bellafato.
Speaker 3 (49:52):
There she is, Claudia, Say hello.
Speaker 6 (49:56):
Hi, everybody.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
What's going on?
Speaker 9 (49:58):
I told Friday I wasn't I'm ready today, but he said,
I don't care.
Speaker 3 (50:02):
Yeah, I feel curve compared to us.
Speaker 6 (50:04):
You're camera ready, Claudia.
Speaker 4 (50:06):
I don't know if you know, but I'm always camera ready.
Oh you don't know.
Speaker 9 (50:09):
How badly I wanted my mic on when they were
talking about red Drop all the places I had a
lot to say, real full season.
Speaker 2 (50:19):
You're gonna have average, Yeah, you're gonna have You're gonna
have plenty of times I haven't seen there.
Speaker 3 (50:23):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 4 (50:24):
Only on Friday?
Speaker 3 (50:26):
As long as you're nice to dunkin Donuts, I think
everything's fair game.
Speaker 4 (50:30):
You don't want to get Kenny Keller on your case
all the time.
Speaker 2 (50:36):
So Claudia, you are going to be the host this
year of our pre and post game show.
Speaker 9 (50:41):
Yeah, very very excited. Grew up I'm a New England girl.
So anybody out there like, who is this lady? I
grew up in New England. I've been here for a
few years working at the stations out here. Patriots have
always and forever been my team. So very surreal. I
remember one day I was at the gym and you know,
I'm in between jobs, and I see an email from
Cursed and I'm like, hold on that, Fred, and he's like, hey,
(51:03):
we need o's for the Patriots. I call my parents,
I'm like, you'll never believe it, And of course they're
super thrilled, and yeah, we're gonna have a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (51:10):
I'm excited.
Speaker 4 (51:11):
So your parents said, Fred.
Speaker 9 (51:13):
Who My Dad's like, I know who that is.
Speaker 3 (51:16):
Really, he's the one not to bull smoke. Friend.
Speaker 4 (51:20):
Don't get too big of a head.
Speaker 3 (51:21):
All right, So we've got about a minute left. Give
us your quick synopsis of what you're looking for this
year with this team.
Speaker 9 (51:29):
Yeah, there's no way we can do any worse. I think,
you know, we talk win totals. I think eight wins
makes a lot of sense for this team. You look
at the the East in general, I think the teams
around them are much lesser. And we'll talk it at
length about Steph Diggs, but I think just having him
there and look at the competition he had when it
came to targets and with the Texans, and he's still
(51:50):
I think performed well there and just more weapons. You
guys can argue about what is, but they.
Speaker 4 (51:56):
Have more to do that.
Speaker 9 (51:58):
You know, we have a real tackle, We have a
right tackle. The on line in general should be better.
We spent all that money on the defense. So I'm
really excited about the Patriots in general.
Speaker 4 (52:07):
I think Drake May is great.
Speaker 9 (52:09):
I think this really is interesting to see what this
first preseason game him and you know, the rookie of
the year in Jade and Daniels. There's a big age
gap the same draft class, and yeah, I'm really excited
to get started here on Friday.
Speaker 4 (52:20):
It's gonna be a good season out that age gap. Oh,
we'll talk about it.
Speaker 3 (52:30):
I think I think Daniel says grandkids at this point.
Speaker 9 (52:32):
I heard yeah, yeah, No, I mean fifth year and
he did a lot of L s U and his
fifth year, and I think that showed us what he
was going to give us in the NFL, but but
he over exceeded expectations, and so I don't know if
it's totally fair to compare him in Drake May. But
of course they're going to do that when you're in
the same class, all right, and yeah, I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (52:51):
Well that's great. So that's gonna be it for uh,
this practice. We're gonna go down and watch the practice.
Induce in Paul and Evan, right, you'll.
Speaker 6 (53:01):
Wrap up, we'll have them.
Speaker 2 (53:02):
Yeah, you'll wrap up everything you see in the training
camp cast, which will come out later today, So you know,
any all the opinions and analysis, you'll still get that
later today. But I just want to thank Claudia for
joining us again. This is a little sneak peek at
our new pre and postgame host. We'll make an official
announcement before the regular season, so you know, we'll blow
(53:26):
all that out with Claudia. But you know, I as
a thank you for watching this, I thought maybe we'd
give people a little inside information today, all right, Yeah,
a little inside baseball. So for Claudia, Evan, Paul, myself, Deuce,
everybody behind the scenes. I want to thank you for
watching today, we're gonna go and get down to practice. Uh,
(53:47):
stay tuned on Patriotsocial and Patriots dot com for all
the content that we're going to be putting out.
Speaker 3 (53:52):
And when's the next time we'll be talking to people?
Speaker 2 (53:56):
Well, the pregame show, right, if you have tomorrow tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (54:01):
We'll have PU tomorrow, right yeah?
Speaker 3 (54:03):
Oh yeah, what am I saying?
Speaker 4 (54:04):
I don't know? It was confused. I was like, are
we not doing?
Speaker 6 (54:06):
I get mixed up.
Speaker 2 (54:07):
So we'll be back at noon tomorrow with PU. You're
gonna be what time tomorrow before right after twotiforecast twenty two,
and then we've got the pregame show on Friday, right yep?
Speaker 4 (54:17):
Yeah, and of course don't know what time.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
Don't forget the Brady statue unveiling on Friday. That'll be
stream live at six o'clock on Patriots dot com.
