Speaker 1 (00:07):
All right, welcome to episode fifty two of Past from
the Paths from the Past, and we have probably one
of the most distinguished guests we've ever had. He's here
today because he's being inducted into the Patriots.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
It's the one and only Bill Parcells and coach. It's
just a treat to see you again.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Thank you very much, and it's good to be back here. Yeah,
in New England and obviously very humbled by the honor.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, let me let me move this a little closer. Right, Yes,
I have you been back. When's the last time you
were here?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Well, I was here with the Dallas Cowboys playing against right, Okay, yeah, yeah,
I've been here just a couple of times to play.
But no, I haven't been.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Back because I remember, you know, when the border war
ended and you did that phone call with the New
England media and you said, yeah, you know, I'd love
to come up sometime and just see a game.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Still wait, I love, We'd love to have you anytime
you want.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
You know. You know, So I'm in Florida in the
winter late season and in the winter, and uh, I'm
racing horses in the summer. Most of the time. Yeah,
but I do like it here, and I feel good
enough to come back and see what's going on.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
That'd be great. That great. I know that.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
I know everyone would treat you, you know, like a
king if you came back. I can tell you. You know,
I know Julian Edelman's going in today, but I.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Think Fred and I both believe that this is Bill
Parcell's dad.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, it was great. And Matt Smith is here too.
Matt is our executive.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
You don't you would never remember this, which I wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
I wouldn't blame you.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
But wait, back when in ninety five, when you were
doing the TV show, I was doing the TV show,
Mike Lynch.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Mike Clinch, Yeah, you remember that. I got it.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, Coach, you'd wont two super Bowls.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
You had some health concerns. I think people scratch your heads.
Why did you come back?

Speaker 4 (02:08):
What was it about coming back that you wanted to
come back and white here?

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Well?

Speaker 3 (02:12):
I just loved the profession. And you know, it's if
you see yourself as something, which is what I do
and it's all I ever did. And you know, those
health concerns completely disappeared, and I said why not? And
so I still enjoy it and that's how I want

(02:34):
to do and so I did it.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
But you were picky.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
How did James Orthwine convince you to come to the
Patriots because you probably had options.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
I'm sure I.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Did have two options. I remember mister Orthwine wasn't the
one that really talked me into it. I can't remember
the name of the fella that came down. I was
in Florida. They flew down and we talked down there.
The then general manager was Patrick Forte. Yeah, he came

(03:03):
on the plane playing with us. We talked back and forth,
got a few things straight and I said, I'll let
you know tomorrow. And I knew I was going to
do it, I think, and so we got back to it.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
So Mickey Corkran was your high school coach, and I
know he was an environmentor to you for a long time.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Did you talk to him before you came here.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, but he you know, he's a coach at heart.
He wants to see his boy coaching, right, so because
that gives him something to do on Sunday. So he
was all for it. You know, I always liked this area.
I live very close to here now and it's been
it's been fun. I've always liked to hear and it's

(03:49):
a special place for me.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
So when the when the when the draft was coming
around to coach Parcels, you know, I think the alleged prognosticators,
it's bled Somyer bleds Omayra.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Is that a tough decision for you at the time?
Not for me. I had a little contention with the
personnel director at the time, named Charlie Army. He was
he felt like Meyer was a safer pick. But I
watched every pass that Drew blessed so through on film

(04:21):
for two years. I watched every pass he threw, and
when I was done with that reel, I was convinced
that's who I wanted.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, what was it about that reel that?

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Well, he's a big, strong guy, six' five or, six
whatever it, is and he had a good. Arm they
were playing in a passing offense At Washington, state and
he had a lot of experience in the passing, game
and you, know you never know when you. Pick you
don't know to ever know exactly what you're. Getting, yeah
BUT i thought there was a good chance to be.

(04:54):
Successful he did a good.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Job he sure did the end of the ninety three,
Season coach, parcels when you ran off those wins at the,
END i think a lot of people here remember The
miami game here at the end Of. December he hits
A temptson down the sideline with that long pass at
that point in. TIME i know it doesn't necessarily carry,
over but did you were you think of?

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yourself you know what we might be onto something? Here you?
KNOW I i was fairly confident in, team even though
the record wasn't showing that. YET i KNEW i had
enough good, players and we were getting them every year

(05:33):
more and. More SO i felt like if we could
just keep a good attitude and develop a good toughness
and general overall expecting to win kind of, thing that
we might have a shot and fair.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Enough one of my crosses to Beer coach is working
With Scott zolac. TODAY i Love, zoe But zoe tells
me SO i want to know what's accurate or what's not.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Accurate, Okay, well first of, all he's a slight. Exaggerator
this is WHERE i want to find out if he's
really exaggerating or. Not so the way he tells the story.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
Is The minnesota game in ninety, four you guys are
down a, Bunch and he said that he went up
to you at halftime in the locker room and, said
you gotta let the kid call his own, plays AND
i think he tells it you looked at him and,
said you know, what you want to coach the team,
now and you turn on the hill and walked.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Away he then says that after you.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Meeting you And ray are talking about you know what's
going on the second, half that you, said all, right,
everybody here's the, Deal, drew you're calling your own, plays
and that you looked At zoe and, said good. Idea
now That's Zoe's in terms of it's pretty.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Close here's what. Happened but first of, ALL i had
a little visual prior to. Halftime we had been in
a two minute offense for six or seven, minutes SO
i had seen That minnesota was just playing one stand
defense against, it AND i didn't know whether they had anything.

(07:04):
Else so that's really WHY i agreed to do, it
BECAUSE i knew we could hurt that one standard defense
because we'd already heard it.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Before they, have, RIGHT i think they still play that same.
Defense BUT.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
I want to go back to when you got. HERE
i know you coached here in eighty as a linebackers,
coach so you were familiar With Foxboro stadium and the.
Facilities but, really by the time you got here in ninety,
THREE i, mean it had even. Deteriorated more, like what
did you think about the facilities?

Speaker 3 (07:35):
HERE i already knew about. It i've been, Here i'd seen,
IT i passed. IT i that you, know it doesn't
make any difference what the facilities look like if you
got good players.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Sitting in the meetings and that. Shit, yeah so we
had a.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Chance, well speaking of good, players WHEN i say the
phrase circle the, wagon, guys who comes to mind on The? Patriots,
Well Vincent brown.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Timp?

Speaker 5 (08:07):
It, Yeah Ben, Coates, Yeah turner And gash sure, yeah hold,
on hold, On Maurice. Hurst, okay let me think of somebody.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Else.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
ARMSTRONG i was gonna, say what About bob Cratch, maybe.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
YEAH i brought him here with. ME i know it.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Did yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Not armstrong was. Good, no oh, Yeah i'll tell you
something about. Him in my second year here With Blood,
soap we threw over seven hundred. Passes he didn't give
up any. Sex, yeah, none. Zero that's pretty.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Good some of the battles he had With Bruce Smith
Buffalo Epic.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Epic that's.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Right, Yeah i'll throw a couple of the names towards your,
coach because those are the guys that when you drafted,
them those are the guys that were really core players
for Coach belichick's. Area we're talking about guys Like Teddy,
Bruski willie.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
McGuinness you're talking about my, boys ted Ted, johnson Ty.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
LAW i Know Adam, viniti Who fred AND i believe
should be here with you today going into The Patriots
hall Of.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Fame And, fred what's the little? Guy what's a little guy's.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Name that was drafted out of MARSH i know there's
a really famous wide receiver From.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
MARY i think.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
He's one of the smartest football Players i've ever, Heard
Troy Troy.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Football now you, well we got him at The. Patriots
i'm going to tell you a true. Story my Friend Jim,
donnan WHO i knew from, years was the head coach At.
Marshall this is right close to the end of the.
Draft it WAS i never heard of, him so he,
said he called. Me he, Said, BILL i got a
little returner down, here he, said he caught a hundred

(09:58):
balls for.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Us he, said you.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Might you might need to come down and look at,
HIM i, Said Bobby greer, DOWN i, Said, BOBBY i
want to know one. Thing can he be our punt
returner comes? Back he, SAID i think he. Can't we
drafted him in the last seven way.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
Back, yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAH i mean now he was
back and forth.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Though, YEAH i, KNOW i know he was back and,
forth but he finally developed his own niche and became
a slot third receiver and, yeah, YEAH i loved.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
It, Now LIKE i, said he had such a high FOOTBALL.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
IQ i know he's. Good.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
Yeah you were still in it at the, time so
you're dealing with your own team and everything like. That
were you able at the time to like take a
little look back and, go, wow look at What Troy
brown developed. Into look at What Teddy bruski.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Did you couldn't miss. Him he was all over the,
highlights all over the film ON, tv all the game film,
up still in. It i'm Watching source Of pride for, you.
Coach oh, yeah, yeah all of. Them and, McGinnis are
you kidding? ME i love McGinnis and there's just so

(11:11):
Many Curtis Curtis.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
MARTIN i want to talk about him in the, second
BUT i remember that first TIME i met, you you
told me coaching is, teaching. Yep And i'll never forget that.
TIME i was At Bryant college and it was after.
Practice Ty law had just been, drafted and you were
working with him on the sideline because you noticed that
he was when he was one on one, deep he

(11:35):
was going up with this hand instead of the other,
hand and you showed him how if you go up
with the other, hand you gain at least a foot,
Wise AND i remember, that And i'm, like, yeah coaching is.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Teaching is, teaching.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
YEP i liked him.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Too oh, yeah take a busload all Those and With
bruski when he got, here he was a pass, rusher
but you had to teach.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Him you got to because we're going to make you
more of a.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Linebacker, well when we drafted, him we didn't know what
we were going to do with, them but we knew
he could at least play special teams for, sure and
so we started with that, premise and then we worked
them into The nickels, defense and pretty soon he's playing
regular in the Nickel. Yeah now he's on, Television, LIKE
i KNOW i helped get him that.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Job he's a big, shot, Right oh?

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Yeah uh in ninety, Six, bill was there a time
or a game in ninety six where you thought to, yourself.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
We're gonna be.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
OKAY i think we might be. Okay here we got something.
HERE i think we got a team that can. Contend
if you remember a moment or a game that said
that to you or was it a progression through the.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Year you, know that's a tough. QUESTION i can you,
KNOW i coast a lot of. GAMES i can't always
measure more sure together and think. Back but you, Know
buffalo had been in their heyday and we were starting
to get back control of, them AND i knew they

(13:07):
were a Super bowl. Contender SO i felt like once
we started having some success against, them that we won't
have a. Chance. NOW i want to tell you a
story On venetari. Too, okay we signed him for five hundred.
DOLLARS i always tease him about, that and you, KNOW i,
said how's? That how's that decision to send him with

(13:28):
The patriots working? OUT i just talked to him the other.
Day he's just. Called SO i think he tells the
story of like he's.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
Nervous matt's, here, right your, guy he's the, incumbent and
he's so he's sitting, there what are my chances of?

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Everything like?

Speaker 4 (13:42):
That and he says that you told him one one preseason,
game you're Doing you're kicking this.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Game let's see how it. Cos and he made.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
The, kicks had a good preseason, game and whenever it
was you made the, Decision, hey by the, way you're
gonna be our.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Kicker and he.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
Was still is he, serious, like, Like i'm going to
be the kicker of this? Team and he was he
couldn't really believe.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
It, well the reason he couldn't believe. It one of
the hardest things to do as a coach is to
give up a player who has been, productive clutch everything
you've ever, wanted but now he's just too old and
he can't do what he used to. Do and that
Was Matt. BARR i mean he kicked us into the

(14:24):
Super bowl with one, kid. Yep AND i Loved. MATT
i MEAN i, did And matt got, it he knew
AND i just, Said matt got to do we gotta try.
THIS i, said it doesn't, Work i'll bring you. Back.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Yeah that was.

Speaker 3 (14:38):
It, yeah is that the hardest part of the.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Business coach parcels when you've got a guy like you just,
said this guy got you into the Super.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Bowl but you, know they're your. Guys you live in
them every day for eight, hours for half the, year
for ten. Years it's more than just coach. Player it's you,
know you know everything about. Him you know all the, issues, problem, family,
kids this, everything and you, know so it's hard to
give up on. Them and especially if you know they're still,

(15:09):
needy you, know if they still need the, money if
something's happened that they you, know they're not smart with
their investments and things like. That you it's. HARD i,
think you know, what you gotta be cold. Blooded the
training is rolling and you were on it or you're.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
Off we were talking with Coach rabel this, week you,
know just he was wanted to talk about what great
what it was great that you're going in and That
julian's going. In and he said that you talked to
him in twenty. Eighteen he, said you took the time
to speak with him and he was just starting out At,
tennessee and he said he gave you some unbelievable advice
And the way he told it to me was. Unbelievable he,

(15:47):
said take these guys out to lunch if you. Can
if you've got a problem with the, guy get to
know him a little. Bit it's not just enough to
bring him into your office and do. Things you got
to get to know what makes these people. Tick and
he was, saying that's. IT i, said he'll never ever forget.
You that's very it's very nice of you to be
able to share like that with somebody in the.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Business, well you, KNOW i felt an. Obligation you're a.
COACH i had coaches help me WHEN i was, young
AND i made up my mind WHENEVER i had that
opportunity THAT i would follow. Through AND i have.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Absolutely you, know going back To, VINITARI i remember in,
practice you, know giving him the business when he was
trying to kick make, it you, know casting a shadow
over the ball or squirting it with water something like
that distract. Him oh, Yeah so what was that point
where you, said you know that not only where is

(16:45):
he going to be our, kicker but he could be
one of the.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Best, well.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
You, know the first game we played was In buffalo
and it Was. September single Digits, september AND i remember
it was like sleeping up there In, september and so
the weather conditions were very bad and he missed a
couple of kicks in the.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Game, yeah so.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
You, know everybody's looking at me, sideways including my own, coaching,
RIGHT i, say, hey you, know settle. Down we let him.
Kick the second, game HE i think he was one for.
Two you, know he missed another, one so it was getting.
Close the third game we had an over an overtime Game.
Jacksonville that's, it you got a good vite and we

(17:35):
had to kick to win the. Game AND i remember
thinking to, MYSELF i hope you make it sound because
if you, don't you're going to be on the. Bus
and he knew. THAT i, think, NO i think he
did tell him. That but, right, well not for long
is WHAT nfl stands.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
For AND i think he certainly felt the heat after
The buffalo, game, like oh, no that's, right is this
what's going to? Happen and That jacksonville kick propelled not
saying that that's a, reason but on his, way that's.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Right it was a good impathus for.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
It and.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Was he not a?

Speaker 4 (18:07):
Kicker Coach PARCELS i remember another story that he always
used to tell us The walker tackle in The dallas,
game and he said That you pulled him aside after
that and, said, listen, well what did you tell?

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Him, WELL i don't, know BUT i know he won
all his teammates respects right, there and all the. Coaches
so he was. In he was one us now because
of what he, did just that one. Play and you,
know not many kickers will do, That Herscha walker right. Right.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
You you Mentioned Curtis martin, earlier AND i want to
talk about him a little.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
Bit so Boy, wonder Boy.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Wonder AND i remember that first, year his rookie, year
he had that first good, game and you came through
the locker. Room you're, like, yeah one, Game wonder because everybody.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
Was, everybody it was all around, them you, know, Right.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
But he was he was something.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Else he was a special kid in my life.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
On and off the.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
Field you know where he came from and what he. Became,
yep that makes me, cry, sorry.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
No, here go go for it because HE i mean
SO i.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Am always in close contact with. Him. Okay you know
there's a few, people a few. Players this is one
of the most gratifying things about this. Profession there are
a few players they call you On Father's, day and
he's one of.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
Them.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Yeah, Yeah i'll just tell you that means a. Lot
that's really he. Is he doesn't just talk to, Talk
he walks it and you, know like be on the
bus head buried in That, bible and you.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Know he was the real.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
Deal AND i remember the story the. Rookies you, know
they would come and grab you out of your room
and cut your, hair and they went into his room
and he's studying His bible and they couldn't do it to.
Him like hands.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
Off he's. Good he's doing very.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Well and then one of the first things you did
when you left The, jets which by the, Way i'm
still mad, about is uh.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Is you?

Speaker 2 (20:06):
You you got him over there with?

Speaker 6 (20:08):
You.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Yeah, YEAH i got to try to get good.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
Players, yeah and he's one of The he's The hall Of,
famer no.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
Question they changed the rules the poison.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
PILL i, know, LISTEN i lived through it.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
All they changed the rules yeah after that.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
One oh, yeah but smart.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
Business that ninety six fog game coach parcels against The,
steelers the division around in the, playoffs and the image
THAT i remember Is martin running away from. Everybody hard
to see him because of the. Fog Bledsoe's bletsoe's running
behind him with his finger up in the. AIR i
mean that was a special moment for people here In New.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
England it was behind the. Team they didn't really.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
Know here comes the Vaunted Pittsburgh steelers and you guys
thumped him that.

Speaker 6 (20:53):
Day.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Yeah it wasn't even. Close, no it was. Good. Yeah
i'll tell you a very uh funny story that happened
in the. Game. Gosh Rod woodson was playing right corner
for The steelers left corners and this. Happened and so
we were on like a full mode attack in this

(21:14):
game and we hit a pass on him down the
field that was, contested and he had been smiling at,
me okay before the, play AND i said to. Him
he came back and he was flying up back. Again

(21:35):
it's not funny, now Rods. Am he, said, yeah it's still, funny,
coach it's still. Funny they would Beat Terry glenn beat
him to the four yard. Line, YEP i, said he came.
BACK i, said how about it, now it's still, Funny, Rod, no,
coach it's Fun.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
SO i, mean you were known for being funny and
having those you, know.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Ways to get you to needle your. Guy where did
you get that? From is? That was that just? Natural or, yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:05):
It's got to be. Yourself, yeah you, know and you
Know i'm. CONFRONTATIONAL i had a very confrontational, mother highly,
confrontation and So i've always been let's let's get it
out on the table and let's settle.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
It now and where or? Not so you grew up that, way, yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Yeah, now So.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Lock talks about, practice he said the needle was usually
out during stretch where that was the time to bust
balls at that point in, time and nobody was. Immune
somebody was a little heavy is weight you're gonna get
him with the, Weight you're gonna get him on all
kinds OF i have.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
To get myself with.

Speaker 4 (22:41):
That but he said that that was like he reveres
that time and thinks back at that time about that's
the special. Camaraderie that is what football is all.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
About it is and you, know it's you can't explain
it to. People there's just something it's kind of like
a a like a. Magnet it just it keeps you.
Together it's just, yeah and the, man it's als fair.
Too it's if you're sensitive at all business, Right, no,

lot of fans In New. England you, know they welcomed you.
Back you're a big part of why this stadium is still.

Here you.

Speaker 4 (27:19):

had you, know and it's been tremendous, success but people
like Yourself Bledsoe. Craft you, know you built the foundation
for football. Fans you, know you, guys you couldn't get
arrested in this. Area we're playing football until you guys came.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
ALONG i was. Here you couldn't give tickets away and
now we have archery in the.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
State that's.

Speaker 4 (27:39):
RIGHT i use, that by the, way all the. Time
we sometimes call it canniball practice if it's a really bad.

day That Bill parcells was, hired because, good we had
a legitimate. Coach, Finally, yeah thank you very. Much, yeah thank,

Owner Robert. Kraft so you heard somebody was in. Town
you decided to stop.

Speaker 6 (28:08):
In, yeah, well, actually you you want to know. Something,
sure we almost were classmates in. College do you remember
is That?

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Columbia?

Speaker 6 (28:18):
Yeah, SEE i couldn't believe. It AND i played freshman football.
There we would have been on the same. Team oh,
wow in the world The Ivy league And Armie navy
had lightweight. TEAMS i switched to that much soft for,
media but. Freshman and you know, what the last Time

(28:40):
columbia won A Super, bowl this, Guy Bill, campbell was nineteen.
SIXTY i guess when we would have been soft would
have been.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
THERE i knew the baseball coach was Named John wincoln
and he was the one that really was pushing me
to go. There AND i was going to play football,
Too but he who was the guy.

Speaker 6 (29:00):
That, really can you imagine we would have been on
the same. FRESHURE i got a picture of the. Freshman
i'll show it to you IF i can get BECAUSE
i have another PICTURE i want to show.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
You look good by the way it really looked. WELL
i got to go in the Next.

Speaker 6 (29:17):
Friday them you are, no BUT i. Never so here's
the thing. THERE i was a fan with my sons
watching watching The, patriots and we had gone to the
games in the old, stadium and then we got the.

(29:39):
Stadium i'll never forget the last game Against. Miami, yeah
and the way we won that you won the last four,
games and.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
That was in ninety. Three the FIRST i.

Speaker 6 (29:56):
Went down the elevator, ESPECIALLY i Remember jonathan And danny
AND i, said you know, what we can't let this
team go To Saint.

Speaker 3 (30:08):
Louis we got to do.

Speaker 6 (30:10):
It so my bride said to, me what are you
going to pay for the? TEAM i, said the right
numbers won, ten But i'll probably.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
Go to one fifteen to one. Twenty and then we
played one seventy.

Speaker 6 (30:27):
Two but you being the anchor and Bled so the,
quarterback and that those last four, games it was just
an emotional.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
THING i was going to pay WHATEVER i had to, pay,
GOTCHA i want to keep the.

Speaker 6 (30:42):
Team, no but you were the. Inspiration thank you very.
Much you're very.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
Kind but, no if we didn't have the, resources it
wouldn't have got. GOING i thank you for.

Speaker 6 (30:52):
That, well think how you changed We we hadn't won
a playoff game in eight. Years we never, no, wait
we hadn't been to a.

Speaker 3 (31:03):
Playoff we never won a home player.

Speaker 6 (31:06):
Game never THINK i was thinking about that BECAUSE i
went to the.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
Games the first thirty four.

Speaker 6 (31:13):
Years the only home playoff game was against The Houston
oilists nineteen seventy. Eight Earl campbell ran for over one hundred.
Yards so think about. It in the thirty four years
before you, arrived they had never had more than they
never won a playoff.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Game, well it's amazing to see what this has. Become
and it's a tribute to you and all the players
and coaches.

Speaker 6 (31:42):
And you know what it. Is, yeah well we're proud
to do you. Know, no but you know what you,
did and it never WAS i got well it might
have been, reciprocal but. No but when you think about,
it the impact that you, had because, No i'll just tell,

(32:07):
YOU i WENT i sat in all four Venues Fenroy, POTT,
bcbu and it Just hovid and it just you, know
those of us that loved. It you came and created
the culture and. Changed, no it's. TRUE i don't know

(32:31):
THAT i would have well and dumb enough to step.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
UP i was going to, ask, like if it was
any other coach and they hadn't won those four games
coming down the, stretch is there a chance that you would,
say you know, what, No i'm not going to do,
this and they would have been In Saint.

Speaker 6 (32:48):
LOUIS i have trouble remembering back five. Years, yeah sort
of go.

Speaker 2 (32:53):
Back your memory is pretty good so.

Speaker 6 (32:55):
Far ninety three it, WAS i Guess december ninety three.
THREE i just we had bought the stadium out of,
bankruptcy you, know and so we own the same so
we're in the, suite not sitting in the metal, benches
AND i just remember, that the way we won that

(33:16):
and the feeling WHEN i got.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
It.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
Yeah, no but you, Look you've had a lot of great,
well but you.

Speaker 3 (33:23):
Know you remember.

Speaker 6 (33:24):
Those i'm special THAT i try to get a golf,
game but he's always driving WHEN i don't go down
there till our season's. Over, yeah, NO i still go
yea to go To. Well we gotta we gotta get
a golf game in this. YEAR i can't play dead
in The western.

Speaker 4 (33:44):
Movie your first game is The OWNER rkk In. MIAMI
i vividly recall this picture of this. Video it's pouring
rain before the. Game you're standing in the tunnel with
this guy And Don shultt trying to wait and see
before the game. Starts that wasn't a great result the.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
First two, games.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
But fians will remember bled sort of coach that was,
like that was. Unbelievable that Was marino De frar that
beat you that. Games so you had to see the
excitement that. First we were pissed probably that they.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
Lost, well we scored over, THIRTY i. BELIEVE i remember
it was.

Speaker 6 (34:26):
Exciting we had an offense, unfortunate But i'll tell you
in fairness to coaching or our, players because we just
were down there, again it's so, hot and for guys
who want used to training there wearing thirty forty pounds of.
EQUIPMENT i, mean they played a great. Game the same

(34:47):
thing happened In buffalo next week, Too but you know
what it, Was it was no you know what it
was so. Exciting and, UH i think for me. Too you,
know well we went to the.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
Playoffs, no that's, good that's what we're supposed to, Do.
Chicago remember the last.

Speaker 6 (35:12):
Game the worst part of that season was losing in
the playoffs to his former, PAL i, mean former.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
COACHING i know.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
We weren't quite ready. Though we had a chance at
the end of that, game and, uh, listen this is.
Vivid remember this, kid we Had Ray. Crittenden, yeah, okay
this game is. Close we get Really Sky Virginia, tech

(35:45):
and so we had a. Chance if we can make
one big, play we might beat. Him right, there a,
post Bro bruce throws a nice post him hits him
right in the shoulder pad and bounces. Off that would
have put us on about the ten yard.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
Line, yeah game of.

Speaker 6 (36:04):
Inches, no but what what a game and what a
career you?

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Had no what you changed?

Speaker 6 (36:13):
Everything here you were the icing on the top of the,
cave you, know the finished.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
And it was important for you to Have.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
Yeah, no oh yeah. No AND.

Speaker 6 (36:30):
I wanted the. Fans he deserved it so. Much and,
look our fans are. Competitive so you, know is.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
A jersey guy really one of?

Speaker 6 (36:42):
Us but that jersey guy changed everything here and And
no brought us a sense of sophistication and you, know
people respected. US i don't think people you, know we're
ever lived in the affair with the team and the

(37:02):
way you.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
Motivated, well look what it's become.

Speaker 6 (37:06):
Done, OKAY i MEAN i pinched, myself well it's going well.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
Now.

Speaker 6 (37:15):
Yeah, no And i'm glad To I'm i'm glad this
