Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wanting to sort of breakdown which way you guys are
going to lean in terms of starting starters or have
you figured it out?
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Yeah, we will play everybody, So how long that is
will kind of determine how things are going a little bit.
But everybody's going to play in this game.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Do you expect Travis to play both both sides in
this one? Yep's a hard decision for you to play
those guys.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
No, Actually it came to a Actually he was one
of the guys that kind of convinced me. Actually came
in the weight room the other day on the day
off and we talked about it and wanted to play.
A lot of the guys want to play, so you know,
actually you got two new systems on both sides of
the ball and the one joint as I mentioned, so
(00:47):
it kind of I'm not saying it ties your hands
because you can do whatever you want, but it just
kind of everything leans that way is probably being the
best thing for our team right now. Would have kind
of conventionied No, No, Hainzy not convinced, but he just
came up the other day in the weight room was
just like what are we doing? You know, and I'm
(01:08):
like I'm still working on it. We want to play,
you know, and Trevor as well and some of the guys,
so yeah, it'll be good.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, we're actually going to connect today, so we haven't
talked about it yet, so I'm not sure on what
they're doing or not, but we're going to contact today.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
You couldn't mentioned it, Trevor. In the first year of
the system. Does that sort of make it more important
to get the first team in?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
That's right? I mean, that's so much right. It's like
we have moving parts and pieces on the offensive line
that we you know, new ones, obviously, multiple different receivers, quarterback,
playing a first year system. All of that is kind
of what points to that. And look, if we had
three joints and you know, two days of work by
each of those joints, then we probably wouldn't be playing.
(01:58):
But that's kind of where we're at. So we've got
to go and probably take advantage of these opportunities.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
You talked about how co communication is hainesy. Just having
that comfort to come.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
To you and be like, hey, it's kind of what
we want to do.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Is that's just a sign of what you're kind of
looking for it is.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
You know, like we've we've you know, obviously have a
little bit more experience with some of those kind of
conversations than maybe other guys. But I appreciate, you know,
being able to have that. Trevor called me the other
night and we've talked about it as well on the
ride home a little bit. So yeah, I appreciate that
and definitely more of what you're looking for in terms
(02:35):
of the communication and the ability to be honest and
have a real conversation. And you know, ultimately those guys
have a pulse so much more for what the locker
room is than I do on a daily basis. That's
just the reality. So it was good to hear from
those guys.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
How much of what you want to see on Saturday
night is about that.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
You're fast after you like you talk about exactly what
I just said to the group just now was what
the evaluation will be will be fundamentals, alignment, assignment. Obviously
situational football is going to come up, as we know,
but we're about you know, we're playing a physical team,
you know, a team that's been known for physicality, regardless
(03:15):
if their first guys are in or not. Right, that's
just how they've played the game for a long time,
and so that'll be a great test for all of
our groups that are going to play to see, you know,
kind of where we're at from physicality standpoint. It's live
tackling that we all know is man, It's it's hard
to get that in a practice setting at times, so
(03:36):
I think that'll be valuable for us as well. It's cheating, okay, Yeah,
I think I didn't get anything. I didn't see fer
yet either though. I didn't walk off with him, and
I didn't hear anything. I saw him go down one time,
but he got up, so I haven't heard anything. Yeah,
I haven't heard anything. I think he would have told
me someone was serious, but he didn't hit me on
any true injury stuff. So it seems like I was
(03:58):
like really settled in over the court.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
And again, what were you saying from them?
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, he's done a nice job being able to go
you know, in and out right and with Patrick coming
off the back and being able to get those valuable reps.
And look, it's still competition, you know. That's the beautiful
part of it is. We don't play for a month, right,
and so you have got now the install is in.
We have done with the installs on both sides of
(04:22):
the ball. So now for the next three weeks we
can hone those fundamentals, techniques, concepts, and schemes and then
also play with rotations, play with different guys in different
spots a little bit, and then as obviously you want
to get in about ten days at least maybe as
close as you can to be able to give them
ops to compete, but also tighten it in so we
(04:44):
know maybe who are our five to six are going
to be. But yeah, he's I've been happy with you.
He's a good pro.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Struggled on offense Tuesday, but yesterday, you know, one of
the best ways that you had and to continue today
he's here a veteran and someone say anything great, great coaching.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Why to say that? But I did challenge them in
the team meeting pretty specifically that you know, not every
play is going to be perfect, not every play is
going to be open. You know, we can't say that, man,
We're just going to dial up every play to be open.
For us to have success, somebody's got to make a play,
(05:25):
Like how many opportunities that we had to make one
on ones and hadn't made them, and we're not going
to just go and make them on Sundays, So kind
of challenge those guys to step up a little and
have more production in terms of, you know, guys just
going out and play the game. Man, it's like it's
your backyard. Everybody runs the same place. Everybody in the
(05:46):
NFL runs the same exact place. It's just who's going
to do it better? Right, Who's going to go make plays?
When we call his own beater and it's man, who's
going to go make a play? You got a one
on one opportunity? So I was pleased, excuse me with
their response. Yeah, I was definitely pleased with the response yesterday,
and then started off pretty good today and as we
got younger, it got a little uglier.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
On the side on the sideline.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, so it'll be yeah, Shane will go up, John
Van Dam will be up as well, and then a
couple of the assistant position coaches will be up as well,
So those guys will be up on offense.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah. I know you guys aren't doing heavy game planning
this week, but just in terms of the game week
kind of blow. How did that go for you guys?
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Good?
Speaker 2 (06:31):
So we kind of treated today from an operational standpoint
like your fast Friday in the NFL. So we had
a little bit of an elongated walk through, good meetings
in the morning, elongated walk through.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Practice wasn't extremely long, but we got some good work in.
Went actually a little over that what we were supposed
to do to get some of these younger guys a
little bit more extra work. So I felt like it
was it was a good little flow and then we'll
kind of see, you know, how the rest of this
thing goes over the next few days.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
How do you feel about preseasons like to play. Do
you feel like that helps you get ready and what
kind of whatever the coach wants.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Yeah, whatever coach wants. So if I he asks me
to go out there and perform, I'll go out there
and perform. So it's no problem with me just shopping
in my skills, nothing wrong with it. So I feel like,
you know, first time for the offensive you know group
and defensive group together. I think it's a good thing
that we go out there and you know, try to showcase
it against somebody else.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
What's where progress have you seen within yourself within the
scheme over the last few weeks and then also within
the secondary as a whole.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
We getting comfortable with you know how co coach Camp
calls it call games and you know, uh, you know,
predicting where he wants to call their different things and
you know what he's expecting. I think we getting comfortable
with that. And you know, we just going out there
trying to make plays. Uh. I feel like we make
a play on the ball every single day, and I
you know, I I really enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
You know.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
I think a lot of guys you know, feel the
same way about the defense. And we we'll see what
we doing in uh in the regular season, but as
as far as preseason right now, when in camp, I
think we're doing a pretty good job.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Who's sing your camp? Obviously that seem like every day
you're making your best campus are pro or do you look.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
At it like that?
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (08:04):
Nah, I just look at it as you know, uh,
trying to stack on each day. That's it, you know,
just trying to carry that momentum into to the pre
the regular season. So uh, just going out here and
practicing and making practice extremely hard. So the game is
you know, fa fairly easy, and I'm trying to go
out there and make plays.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
What about this defense?
Speaker 4 (08:20):
How do you like that you've been able to perform.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
Month I I it's it's it gives me places where
I can I can get vision on the ball and
you know, make places more than I have in recent years.
Just going out there, and of of course I don't
mind playing man, which I know I can do pretty well,
and but you know, it gets my eyes on the
on the quarterback and go, go, go, go get the ball,
which I feel like I've been doing this camp where now.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
It's an entirely new system. Is it always good to
kind of get out there in that first preseason game
just to see, you know, how it feels and the
communication and everything working. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
I mean cause when those lights come on and you
playing somebody else, you definitely wanna see how you know,
your your teammates respond to different things and how they
like to play different call and you know they're different uh,
I guess uh characteristics on the field. So I think
it's a really good thing to go out there and
play in a preseason especially given that don't we don't
have a lot of reps in UH camp and against
any anybody else. So I feel like that that's a
(09:12):
uh a key thing to do. Go out there and
see if we can do it and get somebody else.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
What are you like about Travis? You being able to
go offense, run over defense.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
His willingness to go do it. He wants to prove
people wrong. And I feel like that's them type of
mindset you have to have to go and be an
ultimate competitor out here. Of course he has all the
skill sets, but uh, I think it's the mistal, the
mental aspect of it that that makes him different.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
If anyone suggests to him that it can't be done,
does he get angry?
Speaker 5 (09:38):
He he wanna he gonna show you. He he gonna
he gonna try and uh do it in tenfold, and
he gonna and make sure that you know, he puts
his his his best foot forward and you know doing it,
you know, both things and whatever they ask him to do,
he wants to do it at full speed. So, like
I said, his mental fort two for it is is
is unmatched.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Sulta motivate him.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
All you gotta do is tell him I don't think
you can pull the soft Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:58):
Yeah, I feel like that's something that he He kind of
hangs his hats on cause I n I hear you know,
it's a lot of naysayers out there on him, but
he he he comes out here and c P performs
every single day.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
What are you rushing into the receivers?
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Just seeing him across ball every day?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Here.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
They competitors, man, they go out there and they compete,
They block hard. Uh, they make players on the ball
and uh and they challenging us. I feel like that's
gonna be a uh good for us in the long hall. So,
I mean, we making each other better. But I feel
like they're they're having a really good camp.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
What's that relationship with Tyson?
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Ben? Like?
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Just getting to know him these last three months?
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Son, Uh, He's he's extremely funny. I know, I know
a lot of times people don't know that. You know,
he he's a OUs like he's not really that outspoken,
but he he's extremely funny man. And you know, he's
a a great dude to be around. And he he
just wants to soak up the game. Uh, just any
knowledge that I can give him. He wants to learn more.
And Uh, as you can see, man, he's he's taking
it and he's running with it.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
You should when you got here, you wanna kind of
embrace that leadership.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Role and just how has that been so far up here?
Speaker 5 (10:50):
I mean, like I said, they they brought me here
to be myself. I just wanna be myself, and you know, whatever,
whatever those guys ask me, whatever they need, I don't
wanna be the guy that they can they can lean on.
So I'm just being myself. Honestly, It's not anything unnatural, right,
But besides just going out there playing and leading by example.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
You know, you're obviously a lot of success from the
slot and when they go to nickel, that's what you
gonna do. But do you plan on starting in the
base defense and see in the corner?
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Whatever coach wants. I I'm a football player, so whatever
coach wants me to do, I'll go do it.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
Would you like to do that? Like that opportunity, don't
mind it.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
I wanna go play, but I wanna make plays.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
Wherever I can I can find myself on the field
to go make players, I wanna do it. So it
don't matter if they line me up at linebacker, I
go out there and give my all to go but
make some plays.
