Speaker 1 (00:04):

wear horns. My next guest played nine seasons with the Rams.
He's a two time Pro bowler. He threw one hundred
and twenty two career touchdown passes, and he's second all

(00:25):
time in passing in franchise history. Please welcome to Rams Iconic.
Former Rams quarterback Mark Bolger. What's up, man?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
What is great to see you?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Grit to see you too. I am so stoked to
talk to you. I am like when they told me
you were coming on like, I was like, oh my god,
I can't wait to talk to Mark.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
I haven't seen this guy forever. Man, How are you.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'm doing well. I haven't seen he seems the Saint
Louis days.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
But I know you're out in La now and I'm
looking forward to getting out there and visiting with you.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
You gotta come see so far. You won't believe it.
You won't believe what this stadium looks like. You won't
believe the NFL and the show they put on now,
it's incredible.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I know I talked to you just before the show,
and yeah, I still haven't been to Dallas's new stadium.
But that's what happens when you when you get old
like me.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
I'm not going to call you that. But I'm an
old guy.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Now, No, I Fish, you can call me old. It's okay.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
It's not an insult. It's reality, no doubt. Wait, where
are you right now? What is behind you?

Speaker 2 (01:23):
So?

Speaker 4 (01:23):
I live in Nashville now with my wife and two girls,
and I was training for the Olympics with Jared Allen
and Keith Bullick and Mike Russ and we start.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Curling, the Olympic sport everyone watches.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
And we were up north in Minnesota for a couple
of years training and.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Then COVID hit and I said, I'm going to bring
it to Nashville. So here you go.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
I build a curling center here and people a different
field of Nashville. They don't have to go down to the
Broadway and party all day. They can come here during
the day and then go out at night.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Well I got a party a little bit on Brett
just a little bit. But there's ice. There's curling in Tennessee.
I don't even know what curling is. How in the
heck did you get to curling? You're a quarterback and
you're hanging out with Jared Allen?

Speaker 3 (02:10):
What is this?

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Jared Allen moved to Nashville right when I moved here,
and he made it fit with a buddy to be
an Olympian and told me he.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Wanted to do bad.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
And I called him a day letter said there's no
way we're going to be able to do bad, and
he said give me two days.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
And he said, I think we can do it with curling.
And literally that's how it happened.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
And Keith Bullock obviously lives here in Mike Ruis Titans.
They live here, and we got into it. And George Kittle,
the you know forty nine Yeah we know him, Yeah,
I know, I get it to forty nine ers. He
comes in though every week when in the off season,
and he started to curl.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
How in the heck? I mean it?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Okay, So there's a bet, Jared Allen has a bet
to make the Olympics, and you stumble upon curling, So
you're doing it to make the Olympics or you don't
just build a center if you don't love the sport.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
I mean, do you do you love Curly?

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Now?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
No?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
I do. I'm passionate about it. Jared is too. Jared's
still going for the Olympics in Italy. You know.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I just couldn't.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Travel as much, and I said, I'll just do it here.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
So he trained here three days a week.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Unbelievable. We'll get back to Curly. Let's go.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Let's let's go back to your Rams career for Hadman,
because it's funny. I didn't know we were teammates. I
didn't know you were on the practice squad in two thousand.
I had no idea until I was getting ready for
this show. Was I a jerk in two thousand?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
No?

Speaker 4 (03:41):
No, no, it was briefly. You guys are making the
Super Bowl run. Yeah, And Charlie Army was there at
the time, the GM and Jason, you know, the whole crew,
and they couldn't give a roster spot off for me,
but they said, hey, wait till the end of the season,
we'll sign you. And then the next year I did,
and lo and behold my first year because I was

(04:02):
cut by the Saints. So I just went to Pittsburgh
and trained, and we went to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
The long season, uh.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Super Live preasing games five preseason games nine to eleven,
which you know took the season back the week and
then all the way to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
So it was that was my first year. I go, wow,
this is the NFL.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
So I mean, did you ever I mean, everybody thinks
they're going to be a player or they're going to
be a start. I mean, did you ever think you
would become a starter on that football team and become
one of the leaders, go to the.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Pro Bowl, be a Pro Bowl MVP?

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Did you know that about yourself that day when you
were on practice squad?

Speaker 2 (04:45):
I'm kind of.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Sort of, but you know, you walk into a you
know that locker room. You had Marshall fulk and you
had Kurt Warner, Orlando Pays, the List, Lendon Fletcher, you
you had everyone, and I'm walking in into awe. But
I think it reminded me when I went to West Virginia.
I never thought I would have a chance to play.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
It down, let alone start for three years. So just
had to be ready.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
For the opportunity and it came, and I just try
to make the most of it.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
That had to be pretty scary.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
I mean, you got Isaac who's super intense, big Orlando,
you don't want to let him down. And you got
Marshall and you're the quarterback. You're the guy now, I
mean had to be a little bit intimidating, right.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Oh my second year, Yeah, my first start, we were
on the one yard line coming out playing the Raiders. There,
six and zero week came up the Super Bowl loss
and for zero to five and I'm looking at you know,
t Holt, Isaac, Bruce, Orlando, Pays mc collumn, you know,
all the guys. You know, I'm just like, oh gosh,
what I get myself into. But they all had my

(05:53):
six And that's why I loved him. And he went
on a nice round.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
That was the secret, right, I mean, that's that's what
we didn't let out the door. What made the Rams
so great back then. We played for each other. We
had each other's back, you know, and we had a
you know a healthy dose of Hall of Famers too,
so that always helps.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
But you you mentioned.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Kurt Warner and did you see the American Underdog story?
And I wonder, I mean, what was that like for
you watching that whole Kurt Warner movie thing going on
when you took over for him.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Yeah, you know, I haven't seen the movie, but I
remember there was an.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Old show when I first got there. I was my
first year. He did a twenty something like a twenty to.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
Twenty or thirty to thirty, I don't know. And I'm
at his house having a coke out. He invited Jamie
Martin and I over, and I'm watching them like I'm
sitting next to the guy that's.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
On the show right now. He was nothing but great
to me.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
He taught me so much work ethic wise and how
to prepare as a quarterback, and you know, he really
helped me a lot.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
You know, why did you stop playing? Always a question
I wanted to ask.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
You played nine, You could have played more your second
old time, You could have been the franchise leader.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Why did you stop playing?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Well, a lot of it.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
I think that the Rams were on for us through
sale at the time, and there was different, you know,
leadership going on. And I went to the Ravens for
a year just because we were struggling, and you know,
I wasn't playing, you know the best. But then you know,
I got I got married, I had my first.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Kids, and my daughter, I.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Wanted to spend time with her, and I honestly decided
I did in my year with the Ravens and wanted.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
To be with my daughter growing up and see it.
I don't regret it one bit.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
But you know, someone like a Brady and Rogers, I
don't know how they it's a grind because you know.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
I always say, like the guys that play like seventeen
eighteen years, they don't want to go home.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Yeah, I don't know how.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
It was the opposite for me, and you know, I
just want to do some other things.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I realized it wasn't getting younger, and yeah, you for me.
It's not that I don't love for I do love it, but.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
I just know life short and I don't want to
sit here at sixty and regret not hanging around with
my kids.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
When they were a little.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Amen to that, no doubt. Priority is always in the
right spot. And I'll tell you it's funny because I
came in. I came to the Rams as a broadcaster
in two thousand and eight, so you were right in
the middle of your run and I was on sports
talk radio, and oh my god. We used to get
into arguments about you, and I would say, look, he's

(08:43):
a great quarterback, protect him, give him a sound game plan.
Draft Sue, I think you'll be fine, but you know
how it goes. Everybody had to have the new shiny object.
But I thought you were fantastic. What do you miss
most about playing ball?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Uh? As? You know, our locker room was special. It
felt like a college.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Locker room and just us hanging out and you know,
winning and you work so hard during the week and
to finally get a win. You know, baseball and hockey.
I mean they all work hard too, but we get
one chance a week and they don't realize Monday and Tuesdays,
if you play Sunday, what our body goes through. And

(09:26):
we're all in the same boat. And just the respect
we have for each other. It doesn't matter black white,
which poor. We all are in the same boat and
we don't look at it that way. And that's what
I miss about being in an NFL locker room.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
You know, people always ask me what would I do
to change the world. I put the world through a
Dick for Meal training camp. That will bring you together fast.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Mike March, quarterback, Oh my god, it's.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Right, you were in the room with Mike. What was
that like, the.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Indy of the head goes wow.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
I heard he was really tough on Kurt the year
he won the Super Bowl, and he was I think
he was probably even tougher on me.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
So, hey, it worked. It's one of those deals, you know.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
I'm glad it happened, but I would never do it again.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
We can't, no doubt. Mike Martz, like, what do we say?
Genius sometimes is loud and he definitely fits you know
what I mean. It's really awesome. So every time on
the show Rams Iconic, we do this thing called my
Favorite Play.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
And this is so funny.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
I was talking to Steven Jackson and I brought up
some plays, some of my favorite plays that I saw
when I was up in the booth, and I brought
up that Detroit game where you guys saved the world
save the Rams from going h to sixteen.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Remember that game two thousand and nine.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
And it wasn't fun and I tripped out. It was
Matthew Stafford was the starter for Detroit. I'm like, how old.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Am I I know that's crazy. You're probably was Malcolm Briggs.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yeah, he was down. I was up in the booth.
That's crazy, right, Yeah, just just nuts. So we do
this thing called my favorite play. And if you could
think back to what do you think is your best play?
Your favorite play, one that you can't stop thinking about.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
There's a bunch. But honestly, I do think back to Seattle.
We came back. We were way down in the fourth
quarter and we had a Mike Marks, we had a
hot route and I just took a wing on it.
I knew I'd get in so much trouble if I
did it, but we won. To Sean McDonald, we had
a walk off and overtime, and thank goodness, I threw

(11:41):
it on the money and Sean did it because you know,
I pumped faked their safety and it was a walk
off touchdown.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
And so I got a hug from coach Mars after.
But it would have been bad if I didn't.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Oh my god, he hugged you. Did he whisper something
in your ear like, great shot, don't ever do it again.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
I was just scared to death. He was gonna yell
at me even for doing that.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
I talked to Tory, hold about you, and it was
more about Tory going into the Hall of fame and
should be a Hall of famer, will be a Hall
of Famer. But he was talking about your greatness and
how he wished you'd be more in front or out
in front and tell people how good you are are
good you were as a player. It's just not in
your character to boast, So I guess we'll do it

(12:23):
for you.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
No, you don't have to tory of all people.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
He made my job a lot easier, and the route
running him and I be the way they could run routes.
All I had to do is do what coach Marsh
told me, you know, five step, hitch step, two hitches, whatever.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
And put it.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
And I was accurate, so I'll give myself that. But
they were Coach Marsh used to say, be where you're
supposed to be when you're supposed to be there, And.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Those guys were always there.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
And those two guys they made.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Pretty much Mike because they were professionals to the team.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
All I remember Mike screaming at Kirk when you talked
about that nine to nine training camp was don't fool
the blanking quarterback.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
Where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there.
That was in the wide receiver room. First day I
walked in, I go, and then we'd have a great
game and we'd win. And I remember Carol, the secretary
for Coach Marts, would call me seven in the morning
every Monday morning.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
I'm like, I just sleep in now.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Coach Marts had to watch the phone with me before
critique me. We want through for four hundred didn't matter,
It didn't matter. You think you got it, you don't.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
I said, Okay, Wow, I miss those days, man, Mark Man,
thank you for joining me on the show. This has
been special for me. Man, it's really great to catch
up with it. You look great. I can't believe you're curling.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
We'll be rooting for you either way. So Man, thank
you for coming on the show.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
And I'm going to get you out here curling or sweeping.
I appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
You better have a lot of advil. Thanks Man.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Thanks.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
That's a wrap on this episode of RAMS Iconic, presented
by eighteen hundred Tequila, the best taste in tequila. Please
drink responsibly. Hope you enjoyed our conversation with quarterback Mark Bulger.
I'm DeMarco Farr and we'll see you next time.
