Speaker 1 (00:05):
Well, Happy New Year everyone. Welcome to our first Rams
revealed of twenty twenty four, the Los Angeles Rams have
clinched a winning record and with it, a playoff spot.
We'll talk about all that and more as we look
ahead a week eighteen in Santa Clara of the Rams
and the forty nine Ers, with our first time guest
who will turn twenty seven later this month. I believe
Rams linebacker and Super Bowl champion Christian Rose boom good
(00:26):
to sit down with you. How are you, Christian good?
Thanks for having me, and happy New Year to you.
Did you make it to midnight?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
We did? Yeah, it was first time in a while actually.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Because of the late rival or by kind of both.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yeah, were as a later arrival, so I wasn't really
that tired, so stayed up with the wife.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
I think that's a higher degree of difficulty, right, because
you got to East Coast times, so you're flying back.
You really stayed up till three am. I'm gonna give
you right for that, the adult that you are. What
was it like on the tarmac yesterday in Newark, near
Jersey as you're holding up that plane to watch Steelers
and Seahawks to find out if you're going to go
to the playoffs before you even take off.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
For one, we were just hoping that we weren't going
to take off so we could figure out kind of
what our fate was. And if we would have taken
off without knowing, that would have been because the WiFi
is pretty spotty, so it would have been kind of
rough waiting six hours or whatever it was to see
the outcome. So I'm glad they held it. But once
they got that first down to kind of seal, it
as a pretty cool moment, just everybody food and hollering
(01:25):
and having a good time.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
So so I sensed it wasn't necessarily unanimous whether we
should stay and wait though. Were there a few people
advocating for getting back home sooner rather than later? Was
there any argument up front?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
I think one person in particular said we were holding
it up, and I don't think anyone's gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Sway that vote.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, and then Carter, I think he runs more than
what people probably think, so he's really he's got more
say than what you're think.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
And he told him to wait.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
So interesting little wizard Wizard of Oz behind the curtain. Yeah, uh,
will you take us back to summer before we really
get rolling here, whether it's mini camp or training camp
wherever you like. When you hear that the Rams are
kind of peg for six and a half wins, not
a ton of external expectations, what was the feeling like
then and how validating does it feel now to have
overachieved that bar?
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, I think for me personally, I mean, it's just
staying internal as much as you can and getting rid
of all the external noise. And I think the team
really embodied that too, just with a lot of young guys,
but a lot of guys that are great leaders, really
pushing us in the off season and you know, getting
(02:37):
to the point where we're at now. It seems it's
a long season, so it's a lot of steps and
a lot of adversity along the way.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
But to get to where we're at now, it's pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
It's cool to see how this team has grown together
through the ups and the downs.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
So I hear that blocking out the external noise and expectations,
but you're a human like I'm sure against to you
and it can be a mo evading force. Ken and
not to have that us against the world chip on
your shoulder, underappreciate whatever you want to apply to it.
Did the Rams drive off some of that this year?
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Do you think? Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
You know, I think, like I said, it's our leaders
really kept us internal and helped us really just kind
of move forward as a team and block out that,
but also use it as motivating factor, just knowing that
people counted us out.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
I think not say it's.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Really an underdog mentality, but we just we went out
there and could shoot our shot every time and not
worry about the ifsand and the butts.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
All right, let's talk some week seventeen. No such thing
as a bad win in the National Football League, especially
not a bad road win. It wasn't your finest effort collectively,
I know, But how would you describe that victory in
the Metal Lands?
Speaker 3 (03:48):
It was hard fought. I mean, there was a lot
of diversity that we went through, but like you said,
a win's a win, especially when we needed it, really
made the made the difference to get no matter how
many points it is, no matter who you're playing, A
wins a win week seventeen, and then to be in
the playoffs later that that night, is it no matter
(04:12):
how you get there.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
So let's start on the defensive side of the football,
where you've been a great contributor this season, and in
a rare game where the offense commits three turnovers, you
guys are putting sudden change a lot. I think the
Giants only got two field goals off of those giveaways.
How much pride do you take in moments like those
where you have to bow up?
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, you know the offense they've been clicking, so it's
not a situation. We've been put in a lot which
has been great, but you know, holding them the field goals,
getting the ball back to our offense because we know
they're gonna do good things with it. I think that's,
at the end of the day, the only thing we
can really hang our hats on. And yeah, at the end,
getting the miss field goals big for the team, and
(04:52):
just getting the ball back at the end of the day,
that's all we can do, all right.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
As a core special teamer as well, though, who kind
of came up in this league in that role walk
us through the ninety four yard or and how much
did that one sting?
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, it's tough.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
I don't think it's one thing one guy did or
didn't do and and I don't really know what you
go back and say, correct this or correct that. I
think it was it was a good effort by him.
I mean, he's gunners, he's a he plays hard and
he's gonna fight for every yard.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
So I think just kind of the way spun out,
it was Yeah, I no, I want to say a
fluke play, but it was. It was just a good
effort by him.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
And there's there's good players in this league and they're
gonna make plays like that. So obviously as a as
a group, we want to limit those and just really
fly down there together and get them down at the
end of the day.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
So I know the spotlights on that group, right. It
happened in two high leverage moments in December, one in Baltimore,
one in New York. But can you just take us
behind the scenes a little bit, like the strain that
you guys are putting into it, Like these things are
happening and it's going against you, But it's not for
lack of effort, I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
No, Yeah, it's it's not a lack of effort. It's
not a lack of coach.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
It's it's guys making good plays and and but it's
not that we can't make those plays. We just got
to be in those spots and and execute when our
best is needed. And I think that'll be that'll bode
well for us going forward, just knowing what we need
to work on and coaches will put us in great
spots like they always do, and let's just move forward.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
That's all you can really do at this point.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Did you have a favorite moment from that win.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
The end?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
I mean, that's that's all that really matters at the
end is getting a W. So that and then being
on the on the plane and seeing you make the playoffs.
I think it's a It's a cool memory that we'll
have forever with your team.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
So here's mine. And as someone who is in the
business of forcing fumbles, I want to know if you
saw Kyn's mother on his third touchdown, there was a
Giants fan and the sick one Barkley jersey, you had
it and she ripped that thing out of there.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I saw that afterwards.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah, I wouldn't mess with her. And I knowing Kyn
and knowing just who he is, I'm sure his mom
is the same way, So I would not mess with
either one.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Of them. Yeah, when he fumbled a couple times the
other day, it was like, oh my gosh, he's never
done that before. And now that I see who raised him,
I can see why I've all's been pinned to his
risk age his whole life. Yeah, jumping off from there,
let's go kind of season wide. Now, Individually for you,
I remember you had some big plays against the Saints.
I love some of the high leverage moments you had
in Baltimore. You had your first career interception against the Cardinals.
(07:26):
Any one of those or something else stand out to
you as your highlight of the twenty twenty three campaign.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Yeah, I would say the interception is obviously cool, but
I think what was even cool is just the teammates
and how they reacted to that moment because it was
it was a big play in the game to kind
of get us back on track, and just I think
that's been one of the coolest things throughout this season
is seeing how our team just how selfless they are,
(07:53):
how they they don't it doesn't matter who's making the plays.
As long as somebody's making them, we're excited and flying
around having fun with them.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
So I think at the end of the day.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
It's just individual plays that we make, but it's a
team that really embodies the whole work.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
So you guys celebrate better than the offense. Like it's
not even close.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
I think the defense, I don't know if it's we
don't get those moments as much like the touchdown, Like
they score the touchdowns all the time. So three and out,
you celebrate and you go back to sideline. You don't
really do much, and that's that's like a touchdown for us.
So when we get an interception, sack, a phone recovery,
that's that's kind of our time to shine. I wouldn't
(08:32):
saund particularly the best, but but.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
The group celebrat I mean offensive we were pretty much
limited to Tyler Higbee's repertoire and then like who's gonna spike?
Like who's Ky, who's Kirn or pook give. I want
to talk a little bit about player development with you
because I think behind the scenes that's been the key
to the Rams success. Yes, a great draft class, but
there's a lot of players like yourself. Michael Hoyt's another
(08:57):
one who comes to mind, who are getting more expanded opportunities.
And sometimes we think professional football players are just like
finished products, right. You come out of college, you get drafted,
or you make a team, and you're just supposed to
do your job. And that's true to a certain extent.
But I wonder, in your experience here and now, how
have the additional reps, how of the additional coaching moments
helped you become a better pro in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
For sure.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
I think the coaches, for one, have have really been
great for me as a player and a person. And
I think the patience of being on practice squad the
first year kind of my journey to even getting on
the field and knowing what it's like to not get
your chances, and then once you get your chances, you
(09:42):
have to make the most of that opportunity. So yeah,
I love my teammates what they've meant to me because
I've had a good group of friends since I've been
here that kind of been through those ups and downs
with the Mike and Jonah and other guys that a
lot of fans probably don't even know. So it's just, yeah,
it's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that a
(10:04):
lot of people maybe don't see, but you see the
finished product on the field and that's what you can
look forward to.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
I guess I hear your buddies with Joana. I think
he told us that on this show, that you and
he related as a couple of small school, undrafted guys
who are now wearing Super Bowl rings and getting bigger
opportunities as your careers have gone on. That doesn't happen everywhere,
does it?
Speaker 2 (10:23):
No, it doesn't.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah, we say it all the time, like even today.
He said, Man, it's twenty twenty four, and in twenty
twenty when we came in, if.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
You had have told us four years later, we'd still
be in this locker room.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
I mean, it's a it's a blessing, and it's a
crazy opportunity that we've gotten.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
And it's pretty cool to do that with him and
this other guys.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
What was it like, zig zagging from LA to Kansas
City back to LA in the fall of twenty twenty
one and what proved to be a championship season.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, it was. It's kind of a whirlwind, you know.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
And I think all things kind of work together for me,
and I think God's plan in each step that he
kind of laid out for me got me to this point.
And you never know what could happen if we don't
make those those moves and stuff like that. So, I mean,
at the end of the day, it's just thankful to
be here. I love it here and when change a
(11:17):
thing about it?
Speaker 1 (11:18):
So Christian you mentioned along the way, they are your
roots on the practice squad and that foundational experience as
a RAM. And we don't know exactly what's going to
happen Sunday yet, but already some talk about who will
who won't play San Francisco and Los Angeles. The rivalry
is what it is, but inevitably, I think more of
those players who have been toiling away behind the scenes
on both rosters are going to get chances in week eighteen.
(11:39):
What could those moments mean to a RAM or a
Niner that we haven't met yet as soon as this weekend.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, you know, it's like you said, you don't know
exactly how it's going to go down, but hopefully some
guys will get opportunities going into playoff.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Games.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
It'll give them confidence, you know, going forward. And I
think at the end of the day, it'll still be
the Los Angeles Rams playing the Niners. It's gonna be
a big game. Their rivalry is still there no matter
what implications are on the line. But yeah, it'll be
it'll be good, good atmosphere.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
When I say always, when I say San Francisco forty
nine ers, what's kind of your emotional reaction?
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Uh, there's been.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Yeah, you know, it's you never want to like it's
it's just a rivalry. There's there's bad blood always, but
we respect them. A good team obviously, but just a
team you don't like.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
I guess.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
So I was thinking of you, an earnest on Christmas
night when I watched the Ravens go to San Francisco
and beat them, And I think part of the reason
they were able to do that is because they've got
such great linebacker play. Like when you match up with
the Niners in that offensive attack and all their weapons,
is that a game where you really have to be
at your best as a linebacker?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
For sure?
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah, they got I mean they got weapons all over
the place, and their coach well, and their offense is
second to none, and so yeah, you really need.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Good players.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
But also the coaches put us in good spots. I
think they know us better than anybody, and we know
them better than anybody. So it's just that that chess
match that a lot of fans probably don't see, and
in all the hours that the coaches put into it
to put us in those spots is what you see
on the field on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
So your running mate Ernest Jones, despite missing a game
this weekend, took the top spot on the Rams single
season tackle. This went past James laur And I is
a great one who had done it a couple of times.
What's it been like at his hip kind of watching
him do what he's done this season.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
He's, yeah, he's been He's been awesome.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Just to kind of see out there in his development
because I was here when he was a rookie and
I remember his first day in practice.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
I think it was OTAs or.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Probably in April or May, and he said, we're just
kind of looking around and he said, man, this is
really the NFL. And to kind of see where he's
at now as one of the I mean, he's one
of our leaders and just kind of that face of
our organization right now and I think he hopefully will
be for a while. So to just kind of see
him and his maturation and all the good things he's
(14:14):
done to put himself to make those kind of records.
He's he's just a good dude. And I'm a good
player obviously too.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
So when I look back on twenty twenty three, I
think early on what set the foundation for this run
is Sean obviously deciding to continue his head coaching career.
Rohie Morris just missing on that opportunity in Indianapolis. And
I want to ask you about Raw having worked with
him for several years now, and I do hope he
gets more opportunities this offseason to be a head coach
(14:43):
in this league. Again, what's it like when he's at
the front of the room and what attributes does he
have that could make him a head coach in this league?
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Again, we all love Raw obviously, we hope he gets
every opportunity that he deserves, but I hope he's coach forever.
So I think he's just that leader that like I said,
he he knows the game inside and out and he'll
put us in spots every week to have success.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
But he's also that that.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Coach that'll that'll come alongside you when you're maybe not
doing as well, and he's not the one to to
they rip you down. He's he's really gonna build you up,
and he kind of develops that relationship on the side
that you really know what's coming from a place of
love and he wants you to succeed just as much
as anything. So he's like I said, I hope, I
(15:36):
hope he gets whatever chances and whatever opportunities he can get,
but hopefully he can be my coach for a while too.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yeah, he's one of those people that brightens your day
no matter how quick your interaction is, Like you can't
walk past Raheem Morris and not feel better about yourself.
And about that day, it was hilarious to be in
the back of the plane uh in New Jersey because
he had said that he didn't waste any emotional energy
like scoreboard watching, right. I think he said that in
the media last week. So he's coaching us all up, like, hey,
(16:02):
put your phones away, don't watch that, you know, don't
don't don't get caught up in Steelers Seahawks. But it
ultimately worked out for the Rams, right, A little bit
about your your backstory and your family origin, and I
want to just ask, like Rose boom born to be
a linebacker, Like what a great name. Rams are fortunate
to have note boom and rose boom. Where does that
come from? And and have you felt like you were
(16:24):
raised to be a linebacker because you're a rose boom.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
You know, growing up there's a lot of them, a
lot of rose booms in kind of my area, and
it's a it's a very Dutch area, so.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
It didn't really maybe seem that unique to me.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Until you leave and everyone's like, that's boom or they
call me rose or Boom or whatever, and it's yeah,
I think it's it's a good linebacker name for sure.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Yeah, it's a dec leader name for sure.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
And that hometown was Sue Center, Iowa, and the northwest
portion of that stage. What was it like to grow
up in Sue Center?
Speaker 3 (16:59):
It said, it's a small, tight knit community, very Dutch.
It's just a good spot to grow up and to live.
And the support you get from the communities, it's really cool.
So a lot of people probably won't understand it just
because it is such a small town and everybody knows everybody,
but to us, it's home.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
So how small are you talking? Like class size? Graduating?
Speaker 3 (17:23):
We were I had eighty five in my class in
your high school.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
My high school Okay.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Which out there is about medium I've had. I had
buddies that graduated with seven people.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
So and you end up as a South Dakota State
jack rabbit.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Tell us about your recruiting story or how you selected
that destination for your college football.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Yeah, I wasn't very heavily recruited, and I went to
a camp just because it fit into my schedule with
baseball in the summer.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
I went to a camp in Brookings.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Met my future coach, Jimmy Rodgers at the camp and
he recruited me. And I had a couple of other
D two and other smaller schools and ultimately decided to
go to there. And I guess the rest is history.
Had a great, great time in Brookings. It's another community,
(18:15):
a lot like SU Center, where community is very supportive
of athletics, but also everybody is a good, tight knit community.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
For sure.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
I had a phenomenal career there. But I want to
ask you about your red shirt freshman year when I
understand you went up against Carson Wentz and North Dakota State.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Correct, correct, Yep, that's a it's a similar rivalry. I'll say.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
S C s U and nd SU is us and
the Niners right now, so they know us better than anybody,
and we know them better than anybody. So but it's
cool to see to see Carson play, knowing his future
ahead of him because he was he's one of the
greatest to play at that level.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
So and then he comes to Los Angeles and we're
in the.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Same Yeah, and that was the first time I've ever
actually really talk to him, and he said, he said, Jack,
grab it right, And I was like, yeah, never actually
played against you, but I watched you play and kind
of just talk about how that all went down.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
So it's pretty cool. He's nice.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
They won that round.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
They won that round.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Your most famous teammate, Dallas Goddard, yep. Okay, so there's
another connection there too, yep.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
So then they played with each other for a while too.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
So interesting. Someone did note that you're alma mater. South
Dakota State is playing Montana in the FCS title game
this Sunday.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Ye.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Unfortunately it's at eleven am Pacific. So I mean, you
squeeze the first quarter and like you'll be out there
warm ups at Levi's with your phone watching.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Yeah, it was the same way last year when you
played Seattle at the end of the year too.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
The Sunday game is kind of different than me. But yeah, obviously,
good luck to them. They're on a roll, and I
hopefully that just continues.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
So I think Sean would call that a champagne problem
when your alma mater is so good that they're still
playing in January and week eight. Yeah, national footballer for sure, Christian.
We appreciate some of your time on this New Year's Day.
As we sit down together, we finish with a closing
segment called three and out here on Rams Revealed. I've
got three final questions for you. Answer them. I'll make
a donation to the La Rams Foundation on your behalf.
Sound good?
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Sounds good.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
While we're talking, Jack Rabbits, I got to know who
the better college athlete was you or your wife, Riley,
who I understand was a Summit League champion and a
phenomenal hooper.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Well, we'll keep I'm not going to answer that one.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Wait, wait, wait, what do you mean?
Speaker 3 (20:33):
I will say this if we if we play pig
or horse or whatever, I got no shot. Okay, if
we play one on one, it's a different story. That's
all I'll say.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Interesting. Okay, but in terms of college resume, you've probably
got the accolades, but she still got the jump she's
got Yeah, okay, very good. Next question, this is an
agree or disagree. I was thinking, as you guys were
able to get some fourth down takeaways the other day,
that it's nonsense that foot doesn't treat those as takeaways.
So if we could rewrite statistical rule books, should fourth
(21:05):
down stops be takeaway for the defense?
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (21:09):
I mean, because you take that ball away for like
minus one on the Botch fumble. Right, If Tyro throws
a pick thirty years downfield, that's an arm punt. That's
a takeaway, but it's better for the Rams getting it
where he did. Right, Okay, Good to be in good
company there with some agreement. Last one, this has kind
of been like a season long theme here on Rams
revealed probably the best heads of hair that the RAMS
(21:30):
facility has ever had, and you're certainly in that group.
So let's do like a flow power ranking. Who's got
the best lettuce? You're there, Pook is there, Jordan Fuller's there,
Larel Murchison, Ernest Jones, who else you got it? And
kind of who takes the top spot.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Do you think you know?
Speaker 3 (21:46):
Higbee had some good flow for birthday Tyler Higby, and
he cut it. I was disappointed, but you know I
do like Ernest. He switches it up a lot, so
kind of keeps you on your toes whether.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
You're gonna come with us.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
The versatility of the versatility of Ernest's second tone. I
will say that mine's pretty much the same every day
in the facility and then the same every Sunday.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
So you got two looks.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
I hit what's your haircut? Kidence.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
Whenever i've I'm like, man, it's getting too long. You know,
I'll feel it on my elbows.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
When I run out, and I know I gotta go
get a haircut.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
So when you're running out and it hits your elbows,
that's what I know. That's when we schedule your next
barber's appointment. Well, I hope it's a deep enough playoff
run that it gross to your elbows again. And how
about that. Thank you're in early twenty twenty four. Nice
to get to know you a little bit. To you,
your wife, all your loved ones, all the best in
twenty twenty four, and thanks for helping us get to
know these rams. A little bit better.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
