Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hello everyone, and welcome back to a very special edition
of RAMS Revealed. I'm your host, JB. Long and in
twenty twenty four, as you know, we are presented by
Sleep Number, the RAMS Sleep and Wellness partner. Well, the
stars definitely aligned for us and for our guest this week,
rookie safety Cameron Kinchins is here to react to his
(00:22):
record setting day in Seattle and to preview the matchup
with Miami, which just so happens to be his hometown.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Thanks for being here, Thank you glad for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Can you give us a sense of what your last
twenty four hours have been like?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Been a lot probably to most people, but you know
it's kind of normal to me, you know, for the
most part, just my hometown people just congratulating me on
a good game.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, we'll focus a ton on your individual lens in
this episode, but why don't we start with the team perspective? Okay,
in the three game winning streak, how would you describe
what that win in week nine meant to your Rams?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
This causm Veay. You know, we have those meetings all
the time. We had them and our officeason training, and
then we have them every Friday. It's just always talking
about competitive endurance, you know, just outlasting the opponent. And
you could see that game had its ups and downs.
You know, we kind of ended on the back stretch
at the end of the first half, but we came
back in the second half and it wasn't great, but
(01:19):
we found a way to put out of w.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
What do you remember from the halftime locker room.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
It was kind of bittersweet because outside of them, I
guess them last five minutes of the first half, we
was dominating. You know, offense didn't get it, you know,
rolling yet, but we knew it was all gonna come together,
and defense, except a few bad plays, was playing, you know, outstanding.
So it's one of those things like we just got
to eliminate those three four plays and you know, we
all good and it'd be a perfect game.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
So that was the mindset going in, you know, just
keep to the standard.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, can This show is a mix of both on
field performance and reflections and then getting to know you
off the field. This is the rare episode where I
think we got to focus between the lines because what
you did in Seattle. Let's go one interception at that time. Okay,
so we're in the fourth quarter. It's a tie game,
Seahawks have first in goal. Tell us everything we need
to know about one hundred and three yards going the
(02:10):
other way.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Man first, it is just doing your job, you know.
I was.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I had to flash that play. I want to cover
the running back. And then I see Geno kind of scrambling.
You know, Dlon always gonna end up in his face.
So he was just waiting for the opportunity, you know,
just to capitalize on his mistake. And you know, you
just seen the guy coming from the you know, I
felt the guy coming from the other side, and Gino
made a mistake throwing me, throwing my way, and I
just made him.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Pay for it.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Does be? Why get the shout out for the pressure
to make it all shout out?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Be why? Please?
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Because he gonna be mad if I don't. He was
talking about in the locker room yesterday. He just kept
staring at He kept staring at me talking about something.
You still didn't say thank you yet. Still I was like, yeah,
thank you. Be why because at first I didn't see
him on the play actually about the sack them. I
just seen him. He made the block for me, So
I said thank you for the block. He took about
some something else you're missing too. I was there to,
(03:00):
you know, cause a throw and I was like, thank
you be why so he was happy about that.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
One Agent zero good looking out. Did you see the
flag down as you went by?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
I did see the flag, but I didn't. I think
it was probably like chop or something. I didn't think
it was nothing. We did so so.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
You knew that that was going to stand. Yeah, oh,
good for you. I like that our cameras captured a
special moment as you made your way back to the
sideline that I wonder if I can ask you about.
Stafford gave you a big embrace and whisper something in
your ear. Do you remember what he said?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Not exactly. I was in more of like a flash
out moment. It was just it just felt like a
little movie to me.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
So we should ask Kim Weddy. Yeah, probably all due
respect Nne, but like he didn't hear a single thing.
You said. You definitely carried it across the goal line? Yes, right, yeah,
have we confirmed that?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Once I looked at the video, I made sure, but
during the moment I wasn't sure. So I made sure
to pick up the ball and I was making sure
that McVeigh showed that on Friday about not up on
the ball before you get the end zone and how
it's a simple mistake some people made, but just don't
let it happen. So when I seen that ball drop,
I was like, oh, yeah, I'm not going to be
(04:07):
the one on ESPN doing.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
It because of Malachi Coraley the week prior. Okay, so
that was top of mind. Sean and Matthew were both
giving Cam grief in their postgame press conference, saying the
best play he made all day was recovering his own
foot bumble in the end zone. You get credit for
your first pick, and I guess your first fumble. I'm
still scored. If you could go and like convince them,
(04:30):
would you want them to change it or do you
like it just the way it is.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
It's still one hundred and three yard pick six and
then now good a fu recovery.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
So we'll leave it as it is. We'll leave that
to the scorekeepers. If you had to do over on
the celebration, though, what would you have gone with and
did you have enough oxygen to pull it off?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
I did do a celebration, but nobody got it on
no camera because I dropped the ball, picked up the ball,
and then a bunch of ection stuff and then by
the time I did.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
It, all the cameras was gone.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
But yeah, I would have probably ran through the line
fully with the ball, kept the ball in my hand,
did the celebration, and kept the ball and ran to
the sideline.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Okay, so that's the takeaway here is for all defensive
backs going the other way for a pick six. Yes,
for the sake of your team, hang on the football,
but don't ruin your own celebration.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Don't steal your own shine, taking all the time away.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
By dropping it too, by dropping the ball. Maybe my
favorite memory, one that will last with me, is your
presence of mind in your postgame interview to crack a
joke about that entire moment and to bring it full context,
because the backdrop of that game was that DK Metcalf
could not go for the Seahawks. And here's what you
said afterwards.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
When I picked the ball up and see nobody in
front of me, Yeah, and then when I seen by
kind of make that blog, I knew it wasn't nobody
else catching it. And then anyhow, DK on the fields,
I didn't have to worry about a running me down.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
So I think what you're referring to there is a
game from a couple of years back when Buddha Baker
in twenty twenty got tracked down with DK running like
twenty two point six miles per.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Hour, Yes, coming up like a mad man chasing them down.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Is that a memory that just like haunts all defensive
backs in the National Football League?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
It does, and it's like, not too many people, We're
just gonna come out of nowhere and just hok you down.
First of all, just have that type of speed and
then just have that type of willingness to go make
a tackle because once it's kind of passed, the receivers
or mostly the whole offense is kind of like he gone,
he long gone. But I was just happy he wasn't
at a play.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, we haven't talked about this, but I think you
ran four sixty five at the combine. I'm guessing you
feel like you're faster than that.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, you know, lights and you know, it's probably a
bunch of stuff that kind of went into it. Probably
running slow. But I'm from Miami. You know you got
Miami speed, and you know you show up in game time.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
That's right, so that I feel like, was your redemption
or prove it moment?
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, I was figuring that in my head, were you?
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Yeah, like I got to run one oh three here
to make sure that nobody ever talked.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
About Oh no.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
I was onto my after and seeing how fast I
was when I'm like, yeah, I'm pretty sure I wasn't
full six five right there?
Speaker 1 (06:46):
You know what I need to do. I need to
go pull your GPS speed. Yeah, we'll find that. We'll
follow up on that. Here's some superlatives. And let me
just brag on you for a second, because that was
a historic play. It was the longest defensive touchdown in
RAMS history. It was the long defensive touchdown in the
NFL in the last seven seasons. Tied for the longest
interception returned by a rookie in NFL history. The last
(07:09):
guy to do it was Pete Barnum in nineteen twenty six.
Just so you know how long it's been. Right here,
I like this too, longest interception return by a player
younger than twenty three in NFL history. And you just
celebrated a twenty second birthday. Yeah all right, so belated,
happy twenty second birthday. You're the youngest ram you and
Joshua Cardi both twenty two. So there you go. But
(07:31):
here's where I think it comes home. Last three decades
of NFL football, only two defensive touchdowns have been longer
than yours on Sunday, and they both belong to Hall
of Famer Ed Reid. Why do you react that way?
Speaker 3 (07:46):
That's all, you know, And that's great to say the
all time, you know, just to be even brought up
in the same situation, Well, a conversation is him is great.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
You have a special connection through Miami. Yes, sir, what
has he meant to you as an example? Ment tour everything?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
You know, like I said before, that's on the greatest
safety ever to play the game. So just to learn
from him and you know kind of have that competitive,
you know nature with him in conversations with him, it's
just great.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
You know, all he does is motivate.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
And I sent in the Park press conference yesterday when
he was asking about you know, after having the first pick,
you know, what made you, you know, stay hungry to
get a second one because I remember I can't remember
what game it was, but after I quote one pick,
you know, and Reed came to me on the sideline
that you and me. He was like, you know, it's
not illegal to catch another one, Like, it's not illegal,
you know, just go out there and catch as much
(08:36):
as you can. So you know, with me, I don't
really settle for one. I'm trying to lead a game
with eight nine picks, you know, if possible.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
So that conversation must have happened before your three interception
game against Georgia. Yes, okay, so you put it into
practice and you did again yesterday. By the way, his
longest one oh seven. He had one oh seven in
two thousand and eight, one oh six in two thousand
and four, just in case you want to track him down. So, uh,
the second pick maybe not as big of a highlight
(09:04):
obviously didn't lead with it, Maybe not as historically significant,
but I think it was a more impressive catch.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Like that was wild.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
How did you see it?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
It was just a last second reaction.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Yeah, because you were like the tight end was between
you and the football and you came around the blind
side to catch it.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, just instinct, just instincts.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
That was unbelievable. How about fist, by the way, with
kind of the chuck on that sifting tight end to disrupt.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah, they having on that play, So you.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Touched on this a little bit already. I want to
follow up though. When you're playing behind this type of
pass rush as a defensive back, you must feel like
there's multiple opportunities every game where the opposing QB is
just gonna glitch because he's under such duress. Are you
guys hunting those opportunities right now?
Speaker 3 (09:47):
That's how I always been, you know, from week one,
you know, just taking you know, the opportunities ain't come
at first, but when they started to coming, they started
coming bunches, and you could kind of see that over
the last few games.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, well with that two pick perform moments, you're still
only let me do the math two behind Jayleen McCullough.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yeah, for the lead, Jalen is the real ball magnet?
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Is he living right? Or what that was?
Speaker 3 (10:10):
That's literally what they say every time you come to
the sideline after a pick.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
I mean not that he hasn't earned them, but I've
never seen someone run the table on a tip drill
like this before.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
And the crazy part is he's going out there with
probably tempestent of the playing time and it's just probably
like four picks thirty five snap.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
You're so right. When he got his the other day,
I think I looked he had played like sixty snaps, yeah,
and has four interceptions. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I'm getting better than that.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Unbelievable. Uh, let's go to overtime. I want to get
your view and your reaction on a couple of plays. First,
how about that fourth down stop on defense? I think
you had you were out on that right because they
were jumbo all right, So where were you watching it?
And what what was your reaction.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Right on the sideline? And then I was yelling at
the top of my lungs. Yeah, I was just flexing
and yelling.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yeah. I knew they was going to stop him, you.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Know, as soon as he came around, and so as
one person got a hold on them, I know the
rest of the armory was going to be there.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah. I was thinking about your first NFL game, Week one,
Detroit over time. You know, they kind of got your
gassed a little bit. They run it right down the field.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
Like that's will come in competitive endurance.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
And so to see that growth in what now two
months like that was really special to me. To see
that defense get that stop in that moment to set
you up for success.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yeah, especially happened to come back out right at the
giving up the test.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Now, Oh good point. Okay, So I know sometimes when
the offense is on the field, like you'll go sit
down on the bench, maybe watch the game on the
video board. But how about that first catch by Tyler Johnson.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
That's that's the one you was really holding, you bro
holding You couldn't If you was looking out on the field,
you would have seen it, you know what was going on.
But if you're looking at on a bit screen like
you said, as we sit on the bench, and then
you just see that the Seahawks defender coming out of nowhere,
but then you see Toddle Johnson coming out know where
to catch the ball.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
It was just kind of.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Oh, I mean it was one of those no no, no, yes,
yes yes through it. I was like, oh man, I
didn't like the look of it, but was incredible.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
How about the d Rob thirty nine yard walk off winner.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
It was crazy because before the game was I was
telling him, you know, you got to earn you a
game ball, you know, because he was talking about all
the week. He said, I need me another game ball,
I need me another game ball. So before the game
I was telling him and then when he made that cat,
you know, I ran over there to him and after
everybody kind of said it, I was like, you earned
your game ball?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
He too, Yes, I did.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Like it was just great and I was a spectaclic
catch waited in the game was handed.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Yeah, the way he like throttled that down almost kind
of armbard Rick Wooling.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
And that was a crazy catch. Crazy It wasn't like
it came like this you kind of quoting and turnt.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
So You've gone up against this entire portfolio of Rams
receivers and like they're diverse, they're unique, they're talented. You
got the jets of to to you know, the size.
What do you think makes the Marcus unique within that room?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Just being himself, you know and at the same time
being one of the older guys in that room, still
taking taking a little piece of everybody else's game, you know,
for him to be he's not he's not the smallest,
but he got the speed, He got the rocks for sure,
you know, and just being consistent whenever his name is called.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Can you believe Pooka got ejected?
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Yeah? That was that was wild.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
I mean, on the list of people I would never
expect to get ejected, that's wow, That'll be the one
and only I can almost guarantee it. Cam, How did
it go down behind the scenes with with Cam Curll
having to kind of tap out with that injury? I
know he's questionable coming in, Yeah, but how did you
and he kind of manage that? Really? The last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
It was kind of I wouldn't say all over the place,
but you know, between him just rehabbing it, you know,
he's one of them people He's gonna play through everything.
You know, he's a soldier. So it was like one
of those things. I can't get mad with nothing. You know,
I'm just sitting back and learning, you know, just learning
from him and Q. So I'm just here whenever he
needed me to step in, you know, it was it
(14:03):
was never a thing of him playing hurt because he
don't believe in me. Is playing because he believe in hisself,
and you know, he want to help the team out win.
So when he wasn't feeling you know, one hundred percent
or even ninety percent to go out there and give
his full best, he knew I had his back, So
it was no question.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
It was my time of step.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
That's a great answer. And part of the reason I
ask is because to my eye, you've always been the guy. Yeah,
you've always been the starter in your career. I wonder
how you handled being out and then in getting your
chance as a rookie and then kind of out again.
I think I had you for no snaps against Green Bay,
only a couple against Las Vegas, and then these last
two games you're on front street.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Yeah, like coach AP and Coach BT said, you know,
your rookie, you ain't gonna go so smooth as you
think it is. You know, it's not college. You know,
it's a different type of you know, competition. You know,
everything has to be perfect or close to perfect as
much as you can. So with those things, you know,
(15:00):
we meet. I guess taking that back seat and not
playing as much. You know, the last two games it
was more of just pressing that reset button, you know,
just going back to the drawing board and figuring out
what I could do better, you know, because I wasn't
not that just playing horrible football, but it wasn't to
the RAMS standard or to my standard. So it was
one of those things. Just get back to work, you know.
(15:21):
And it wasn't like I wasn't working before, but it
was just being more technical, you know, meeting with the
coaches a little more, you know, find out those little things,
those little details that you know separates you. So when
my time is called, you know, whenever it was, even
if it wasn't that game or you know, a few
games later, I was just gonna be ready.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
I can see the hunger in your eyes when I
asked you that question. You want more days like week
nine and fewer where you're on the sideline. I can
you mentioned Q along the way there. How is Captain Q?
And what's it been like?
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Captain at least you know the name too.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Yeah, a source inside the RAMS told me. And what's
been like seeing him call the defense these last few weeks?
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Been great? You know, he's one of them people.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
He was gonna step up to the play even if
you you know, wasn't the green dot you know, had
to play call in his helmet, but he was one
of the people that you knew soon as the middle
linebacker went down, he's the next guy, no matter where
he had to come from or from, you know, in
his heart always kind of being in safety, being so
far back that you got to run all the way
up to even give the plays.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
But he's just been on point.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
You know, he found every solution or you know, added
or tried to find a solution to every problem we
have as a defense. You know, he's one of those,
he's one of our army Knights. He could probably go
out there play ConA linebacker, you know, Nicol Dime or safety.
You know, he's willing to help the team regardless.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
Doing a great job. All right, let's fast forward, let's
spind it forward. Can you believe you're going to be
playing Monday night football? Your first Monday night football game
against the Dolphins. He told me you weren't a Dolphin
fan growing up, but you're still Miami born and races
born and race, so I'm sure a lot of your
friends and family.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Family is definitely Dolphins. Man. I set my dad, who's Cowboys?
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Interesting?
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Okay, so you grew up playing youth football for the
Falcons and then just kind of adopted the dirty Birds
as your team. There you go, and you got some
cowboys in you as well. All right, while they're receivers.
Speaking of Miami, Tyreek Jalen obij love dearly in this franchise,
tell us about your week of preparation, what's going to
take to deal with their speed?
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Just being intentional, you know, I think that's the biggest
thing with us every week, you know, just not you know,
focus on ourselves too much, but just being intentional on
whatever the coach's game plan is, you know, just going
out there and secure.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
So that's all it's going to be.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Just to deepen our audience's understanding of your roots in
that area of the country was at Miami Northwestern, your
prep program, the five A state championship three years in
a row seventeen eighteen nineteen, then first team All American
honors at Miami and now here with Los Angeles. Quick
word on your draft story, because I heard from from
our side of the equation that the Rams front office
(17:56):
was very much looking for rookie safety with these things
high football IQ, urgent, physical demeanor, and a ball hockey reputation.
How do you mean to the t okay you said it?
How do you think your tape match?
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Is that exactly everything you just said?
Speaker 3 (18:13):
You know, football IQ, you gotta it's one of those
things you gotta have, you know, and it goes with instincts,
because somebody can have instincts or quote unquote instincts, and
if you don't know no football, the instincts won't matter,
you know. And then like you said, being physical, you
can't just go out there and just get pushed around
anything like that. You know, I won't think I'm the
most physically imposing person, but you're not going to see
(18:34):
me pushed around. You know, I'm gonna go out there
and handle what I gotta handle. And then ballhawk is
just being around the ball so and making the plays
and capitalizing the opportunities.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Who taught you the football?
Speaker 2 (18:44):
IQ had to be.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Since I was seven, you know, everybody alone the lines
from seven to twenty two, you know, helped me with
that because it was not always about you know, the
physical stuff too, because being from Miami, that's one of
the things you almost got a half, you know, because
of course that's seven years old. You're not out there,
you know, scheming stuff up and nothing's just going out
there playing football, but you just understand the little stuff.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Like what people lined up at and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
You know, just line the way coaches, you know, coaches
always try to explain that to you. But sometimes kids
don't understand, thinking it's.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Too much or whatever like that.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
But once you kind of grasp that aspect of the game,
everything else gonna come easier.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
All right, Time out for the wind down. We look
forward to this. Every week is brought to you by
Sleep Number. We get into Rams revealed how the Rams
sleep and recover, and how that impacts their performance. Every
week in the NFL CAM. The Rams are currently enjoying
a luxury that not many teams get to sync into,
especially not this time of year. You had the bye
week that sparked this three game winning streak, You had
(19:44):
the many buy to prepare for Seattle. Now you have
an extra day to get set for Monday night football.
How are you and your teammates and coaches making the
most of this additional time?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Firstus recovery, you know, and it can be recovery for
your mind or your body, you know. All it takes
a lot and it's a big tolle on your body
in mind, but just being able to go home and
sleep with that good sleep number.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Yeah, you're a fan.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
