Speaker 1 (00:01):
Yeah, everybody living going are good. We're good.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
So much is the same on defense, coaches, players last year,
what do you feel like might be different?
Speaker 1 (00:16):
I think is our launching point.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I think last year obviously there's so much to figure out,
and it takes a while. We just started on a
whole kind of different you know level. Uh, and we
just know how each other works. I think, you know,
the camaraderie and the chemistry is is just heightened.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
And so now that kind of standard is like high
from the jump.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
You're got you seem to be pushing him right.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
In hood, right in the mix. Uh, he's been there
pretty well.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
I think he's you know, as a rookie, it's tough,
especially as a higher profile rookie, it's always tough.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
But he has a humility to.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Kind of go and get it, uh and kind of
you know, take on the coaching, take on the kind
of whatever the players are saying to him. And he's
doing a good job so early on. I know it's
a lot of time his player. Now we're gonna need
him to be in a role in his defense, uh,
because he's so talented and so yeah, I think he's
doing a great.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Job early You guys are rising pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, rookie in the DV room,
you're gonna you gotta get some thick skin for sure.
We all kind of go at it pretty heavy. And
so he's doing a great job. I mean he has
you know, he's getting quick witted coming back at us
a little bit more. But he's just I mean, he
fits in so naturally. I think the you could tell
they were intentional about like the personality types, and he
(01:34):
fits in the personality of our of our DV room.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
I know it's really early with him, and he believe
in practice for a few weeks, but but how do
you see his skill set complimenting what you and Kobe
burning the table in this defense?
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I think that's the number one word, you know you're here.
His versatility, He can do a lot. He did a
lot in college and COVID and I pride ourselves and
doing a lot. And I think for us to be
successful as like kind of a safety room, you have
to like we can be really good if we can
come down the slot, we can play deep in the field,
we can play in the box.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
I think we all do that well. Obviously.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Nick just his physical traits can make him really excel.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
But I think all of us really compliment each other.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Well in that word, Julian going back to Kobe, Yeah,
it seems like he's having a quiet and very effective
Uh what we've seen of him except.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Fair, fair assessment.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
How he's going through the practices.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, Kobe is Uh, Kobe just has a chip on
his shoulder. And that's I think we all, we all
love him so much, you know, he you know, it
is kind of like Jordan in the Last Dance, just
takes everything personal. Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
That's the type of person he is. He competes in
everything he does.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
And you know when he's quiet, he's locked in and
he's in, he's in the zone. And I think we
all you know, if you look at kind of the
dB room of who you guys see the most, we're
very different, all of us, uh, And I think that's
what's special about us is that we don't have to,
you know, try to be like each other.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
We can let.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Kobe be Kobe, let Spoon be Spoon, reg be Reagan,
they let me be me, And so I think we
just love Kobe for who he is, and he just
works his ass.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Off offense test the defense differently than last year, you know,
as you're trying to come together.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
And guys'then new Yeah, I mean from schematics, from personnel.
When you play agach other so much, you tend to
just kind of play the person and kind of you
know who you're going against. And right now we're just
we need to play free, we play true to kind
of the scheme and just kind of read everything true.
There's not really a lot of anticipation because you're seeing
different looks every other play. They're doing a great job
(03:30):
right now. They're keeping us guessing for sure. Yeah, they're
gonna dial. Sam's doing a great job, and the skill
players are making some plays out there, and we love
it because we're going to compete no matter what.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
You see it from like this defense, in terms of
how you think it's going to try.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
To attack the offense, try to attack us, I think
just keep us guessing, not let us get comfortable. I
think when you see, you know, teams at pressure are
effective pressuring. You see a lot of no huddle screen action,
a lot of misdirection, and that's I think.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
I feel like most teams are gonna try to do
to us.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Just not let us settle in because I thinkhen were
our when our feet are set, cleach are set. I
we're I think one of the best defenses in the league,
and so I wouldn't if I was somebody else, I
wouldn't let us try to get comfortable. I mean sorry,
I met like Kobiac's offense and like what they want
to do, like how they're gonna have attack. Yeah, so
I think, oh, just in general defense, not our defense. Oh,
I think you know, we have the personnel, we have
(04:24):
some talented people on offense. But then it's just understanding that, Okay,
we're gonna be tight in our run fits or run
not fits run scheme, Uh, run the ball predominantly, but
then just play off of it. Understand what kind of
what loveveries on defenses are playing uh, and then have
buildofs off of it. I mean, we've seen just a
little glimpse of kind of the you know, the first progression,
(04:45):
the second level to it, the third level to it,
and it's just so many.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Layers to our offense. It's it's pretty special to see.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
And it's it's cool because right now, like you know,
say they hit a player or something, We're like, man,
how's how's it going like there? You can tell kind
of you see where it's taking shape, and so they're
it's it's some high level stuff going on over there.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
What are you learning going up against Cooper Cup every
day in practice that you didn't know there?
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I mean, he just has every tool of the trade.
He's strong, obviously, great hands. Uh, he's just such an
effective route runner. He is just one of the best
receiver in the league. He's he's shown it obviously guarded
him in games. So I know, first handle kind of
what he has. He brings the table. But it's consistent
work every day. He's coming in every day.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
And just he's he's locked in. He's in the zone.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Uh, he has you know, some shit to him, excuse
my language, but he does. And so it's it's cool
and it's giving our our dB some great looks. It's
give me something that you know, we weren't able to
show really last year.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Your head coach, you said, how you seem recandle this
off season, especially with free agency coming up.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
But have you seen him handle this office. He's been
locked in.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
I think, Uh, you know this part of the year,
everybody's fresh off the off season. Uh, everyone's pretty dialed
in the kind of setting goals for what you want
out of the year, not just sustaining him.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
We all do it.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
We're all like, oh, this off season, this season, I'm
gonna do this, this and this from the worst part.
He's been crushing this this offseason program. He's been here,
he's been getting after it. His numbers are always crazy.
He's just a freak athlete. And we're just I think
where our chemistry is really close to me and him
because we work in tandem a lot out there, and
so I love what I've been seeing and so not
just sustaining it as.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Marcus Florence the NFC East.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
So you've gotten all those match ups, but but what
is he What does he bring?
Speaker 4 (06:31):
What does he bring to the equation for this defense?
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Having post you guys back adding him.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
To the next year, and let's not mention my giant
cowboy matchups from those days we lost a lot of games. Uh,
he's just I mean, he's he's been around and he
knows how to win football games. So you can just
tell that when things are going right for us, he's vibing.
When things aren't up to standard, he's like he kind
of has to look to him like like this isn't
good enough. And so I think he brings a standard
(06:57):
to the defensive room.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
And I think just.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Personality wise, I mean, people love to be around him. Uh,
he's just he's been on the block, He works hard,
and he just does a great addition.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Your head coach used that same phrase about Sam Darnold,
but he used about cups. He's got some, you know.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Yeah, are you starting to see that, like that competitiveness in.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Certain periods of practice? Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I mean the first ota you guys weren't out there,
the defense just picked up where we left off in.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Terms of just chatter.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Uh, just guys are just talking shit every play, it
seems like to the offense, and some of the new
guys are probably looking like okay, kind of set the
tone and they kind of knew what it was. And
then yeah, Sam just has some stuff to him. I
changed my verbews on that one. H he has some
stuff to him. And Coop just he grinds. You know,
he's just a worker.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
He's a workhorse. He's gonna do it.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But Sam kind of has some of that little swag
to him, and he has ability and so he's he's
making us better.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
What does that sound like? Is he talking's fack back here?
Speaker 5 (07:57):
It's like.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Like, uh like dad jokes Like it's like it's like
kind of the little type of kind of jabs. But
you can tell like, Okay, he has some fire tone.
He's used to be kind of being around the guys
on the boys. Uh, he's just you know, he's not
a square type of guy. He's just he's he's he's cool.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
He's cool. Addition, it back a bit good as the.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Defense was last year, there are a couple of games
that weren't up to your standard against the Packers, like
he's ever had a big games for the team. How
do you guys just change that this year?
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
I think one obviously, just stay healthy, kind of make
sure we sustain it. Then just don't get bogged down
with kind of the detailed work. You know that at
that point in the season whatever it was November December,
like you can just let you can just start to
float a little bit.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
And so I think coming into this offseason, we identified.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Some of those games where we feel like, hey, like
what were we it wasn't it wasn't clean enough, and
just detail it. Uh, just detail out the work. I
think you know the dB coach, you know, Jeff Howard,
Carl Scott, they've been getting after in terms of details,
and like those games or games that you see a
lot more of clips on just because it just wasn't
up to kind of the standard that we were setting.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
And so now it's the saying that's the hard part.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
It's easy kind of to do it for a few games,
but the best defenses in the league over NFL history
have been consistent from start to finish.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Mike McDonald communicating, how has.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
That changed this year?
Speaker 3 (09:17):
I think he's just more comfortable and it's kind of
how he wants to run our culture, run our scheme,
you know.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
The verbiage of everything, I think is this is just
in tune.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Everybody's kind of talking the same talk, uh, and so
he just seems more settled in more and more cool calm.
But when he talks ball, he's still at a high
level and he's talking ball.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
There's nobody better than Mike. He says, he's clear. You
can you use a player since that or is it
just the same.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yeah, So outside of like talking ball, I think he
talking ball, he's he's top of the top of the whatever.
But just in terms of like setting the kind of
what we want around here, setting the standard kind of
how we want to build. Just the the messaging is
just super clear of like kind of what our goal is.
And you know what kind of the main phrase you'll
hear is twelve is one and so that's like everything
(10:03):
we're building is off of that just kind of being
you know, it's camaraderie, it's togetherness, it's kind of looking
after your your brother next to you. That's kind of
the the clear messaging. And he's been super dialbling with
that stuff.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
We got as about hunters, but yours just got a
new contract today.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yeah, what does a good un.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
It's huge.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I mean, you know, field position is kind of the
name of the game right now. You see the stats,
the analytics or whatever about when the offense starts at
the fifteen compared to the thirty five. It's just it's
it's the details within the details of how we play,
and it can get overlooked. No one's really you know, say,
oh man, our punter is awesome, Like it's that's not
(10:44):
really a common thing. But we realized in the building
that our punter is actually awesome, Like, Uh, Mike, he
just gets after it.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
He's super consistent with his work, I mean with his
body like he's just a pro. He's a pros pro
And so I know we're all happy for him.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
I mean, you don't often get a tatted up punter
going going to work for.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
You and dick O he uh you know, he's he's
the best, and so we're happy for him. That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
You and Spoon and and the whole crew were looking
at the replay board and saying whether to keep in
or over and all these kind of things. What's going
on there? You guys trying to figure out the offense.
You're trying to figure out how you guys play together.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
It's a mixture.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
I think the accountability is so high that we're gonna
be clear cut about like where were you on this?
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (11:26):
When the receiver does this is what I need from you?
And it's just talking ball. Am I sound kind of crazy?
If you guys are here and never if you're over
there hearing us here, if you're in Spoon ever, but
we all speak differently but are talking the same language.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
If if kind of that makes sense, And so that's
all it is.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
It's I love the boards out there because then you
get to see what happened the previous play in real
time because.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
We're just trying to be the best, uh.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
And it's quick when you get quick feedback out there,
and so that's all it is and DB's do at
a high level.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
I think we really talk a lot out there, Jack.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Those video foards are fairly new to the football sphere
of the FIA practice school with you, how much has
that kind of change being able to have the recipeat
it right there and I have to come in the
building to see.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
You later and how much what does it change for you?
Guys are faking it's cool.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
I mean my first time seeing that was I think
out here and it's cool because I like to get
that instant feedback. It could be crippling if you're like,
you made a bad play and you're going to this island.
Everyone is looking up at the board ready for you
to make a mistake, you know, for the young guys.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
But this kind of you shake back.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
I think we kind of callous ourselves to just getting better,
Like if it's bad, you're still going to rep the
next play.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
And so I love those boards out there. I think
pretty good.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Coach McDonald mentioned this defense feels like it has ownership,
even more so this year just because of the year
two with you guys. He said, it's not just his
defense and you guys are here kind of taking over
in your own relition. Does it feel different for you
in terms of what this defense to do this year?
You mentioned it better launching point.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
I think kind of that shows itself. And like when
we're in the defensive room, it's not about being like
the best defense. Now we're competing of who can be
the best position group.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
In the defense. Uh.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
So it's not just like, okay defense, we're gonna be,
you know, the top whatever in the league. It's like,
you know, we want to be the best secondary in
the league. And who is the tip of the speer
for our practice that day and every day we've been
showing who tip of the spear was, whether it StB's
backers or or D line. And so it's just super
competitive in there. Uh And I think it's can do
some to just just growth. I think, you know, we're
(13:28):
not shoying away from everything. Everyone's getting coach, no matter
if you're you know, d law Leo or the Rooks
we have. It's just a super accountable across all boards,
player to coach, player to player, coach to coach, all
of it is this really, really dial don
Speaker 1 (13:45):
I appreciate you, Thank you,
