Speaker 1 (00:03):
Your tunes about Drive on your twenty four to seven
home of the Black and Goal Steelers Nation Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Good evening, Steeler Nation. How we doing well? That's good
us too.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
It is our number two here of the Drive west
Yuler Matt Williamson. On a victory Tuesday, as we are
back from across the Emerald Isle. We've been smiling. Irish
eyes are always smiling, right, isn't that something that they say?

Speaker 4 (00:38):
Matt?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
I think something like that and certainly the case after
a twenty four to twenty one win. Joining us now
to discuss. He covers the Steelers for the trib. He
also co hosts the Steelers Blitz with our buddy Tom Motferman.
It is Chris Adanski, buzz. Thank you for taking the time.
As always, I just got to ask you maybe bigger
picture here to get started. I think on both sides

(00:58):
of the ball, a lot to be encouraged by in
that win, I think the Steelers' most encouraging performance here
through the month of September. What's kind of at the
top of that list for you? What are you feeling
the best about here? You know, about forty eight hours
after that victory over the Vikings.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
Yeah, I just think overall, I mean, obviously, if you
know that the totally artist numbers aren't great, the order
is differential, They've not gained in every game. There's a
lot of things. If you want to look at a
negative aspect of being three and one, if that's possible,
But I just mean in terms of if you want
to express the point, it's not sustainable. I understand that.
I do think though, you can take all that and

(01:36):
still see that in almost every area that there that
their problems are or they haven't been as good as
they need to be. The eras and pointing up I
don't I can think from week one to week four,
you can almost look it up and down the line,
and they're coming off their best one game at all
those areas, and I can, you know, go through a

(01:58):
couple but and then you know, a two game span
you could say they've probably been the best like and
for instance this the defense being this. You know what
happens once you know, even get a five turnover game
and you know week eight and the rest of the
seasons blood in terms of splash and all that. Okay,
you get a five sack game in the middle of
the season and in the next game or not. But
they do both of those things kind of you know,

(02:19):
both the turnovers, remember they had two to call it
back in this of this span, they almost had nine
turnovers or nine takeaways and the eleven sacks. That's of
our two games span. Now it's a little bit bigger
of a sample size. You can believe that's sustainable, especially
with the personnel on this defense. That these are all
big names with resumes and all of them, you know,

(02:40):
up and down the lift, a whole bunch of playmakers
have a have a history of that, and so there's
reason to believe that that sustainable. It wasn't a lip
It wasn't you know, you know, I get all that,
like the fumble luck. They recovered all those fumbles against
the Patriots. What will happen every week? And I get
you can't depend on all the all the takeaways, but
there are reasons that the running game is another one

(03:01):
where you come off the best performers. The offensive line
was as best as it was in Week four. I
think there's a lot of things that not only are
they three and one, and a lot of their awards
look better right now than the date after Week one
or Week two or week three. Well, put that way,
I think they've looked their era has been pointing up
in a lot of ways that they need need to

(03:22):
be pouring up. Quite frankly, they want to ge where
they're going to go at the end of the season.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
So I'm glad you mentioned it because we hadn't yet.
But there were a couple near turnovers that didn't go
their way. Yeah, I mean they one of them was
a scoop and score that could have been ridiculously massive.
I'm glad you brought those things up, because we went
a whole hour without mentioning it. Chris, I assume you agree,
but I really want to hear your opinion. Rogers' value

(03:46):
to this team thus far way exceeds his stat line.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
Yeah, and you know what, just even and I get it,
like you know, Sol Wilson is a moreline Hall of
Famer two and you know, obviously Ben was here and
things like that, and there was a respect there of course,
But it's just I've been really surprised, especially and I'll
fall I don't want to speak every buddy about you know,
I fall in the trap you from bar Aaron Rodgers
and how things went the Jets and some of the

(04:15):
things and all that, and I'm kind of want to know, boy,
how's this gonna go, how's this how's he gonna be?
And I've been pretty much blown away in terms of
his demeanor in the room, in terms of his way
he interacts with his teammates, the way he kind of
just I mean, he obviously he's forty one years old,
he's won a Super Bowl, he's been in the league
for twenty one years. Literally everybody in that locker room

(04:36):
pretty much grew up watching him play as a kid,
you know, so have that fandom to him. At the
same time, he he bonds with everybody in that sense.
So there's that intangible whatever that's worth or not, you know,
looking debate how much is worth, I think we're a
lot and yeah, okay, and and an especially from your quarterback.

(04:57):
And then you look at it and again you might
the overall stats or whatever and the guard and you know,
I know the ball's not going downfield a lot, first
of all, I would say, and it's may be no
oneother I don't get this tangent a lot here, but
throwing guys open in terms of yes, these short passes,
but there's a skill in an art. I was talking
to Tom Marth about that today at length, actually about
at the skill of a quarterback. And yeah, everybody talks

(05:19):
about deep ball and accuracy or whatever, but the nuance
of throwing, throwing a guy open or throwing to the
right spot so that he can he can get that
yack that you know, such a DK show a lot
of this year. But but just in turn, if you
break it down and you know the splits of fourth quarter,
the splits of behind that those types of things that
the passing and those that the just even someone that
recognizing some things that you've heard him that the Steelers

(05:43):
talk about and the coaches talk about, and Rogers and
the offense and having the players talk about that he's
recognizing on defense. Is that that intangible aspect of it.
And by the way, he's also you know it might
maybe it's not you know what it was and to
fifteen years ago, ten years ago, but you still see
that arm talent like every game one or two throws like,
oh my god, look at that. So yeah, there's been

(06:04):
a lot of ways. For sure, you've done a list
of what he's brought to the team.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Chris I wanted to ask you about the the role
the usage of Pat Fryermouth on Sunday, just fifteen snaps
for him, uh, less than than a fourth out of
the four tight ends, less than than Connor Hayward. Is
that just as simple as you know, on the surface,
him being in the doghouse for for a missed assignment
on that blocked field goal, or do you think there

(06:30):
even could be something deeper there with just them maybe
not being pleased with his performance to this point through
four games.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
I think in terms of and I tried to get
to the bottoments a little bit today and I was
a little success. And you know, we had the assistant
coaches today when we get them, you know, once during
the regular season. So even talking to Fredo rob which
is always always a joy smith it which is you know,
makes anybody's day reality. But just you know, try And
here's my take. And I'm one hundred percent you know,

(06:59):
got from whoever I talked to today here and maybe
so this is kind of speculation on my part, but
I just think that the game plan, well I'm know
for sure the game plan in part was they use
the jumbo, used the big right and that obviously and
then I think when it started working, they went through
it even more. And for all I remember, John Y
Smith didn't play that much either. Now he might have
been hurt a little bit, that might be part of it,

(07:20):
but but Smith played about as little as as Friarmure did.
And you saw Donald Washington play a career high and snaps,
you played what ninety percent of the Steelers snaps. He
saw the count a full back. You saw center Anderson
played seventeenth snaps of jumbo Seve played all the big
big big was the and you were running the ball
and you're winning the game. So they stuck with it.

(07:40):
I think it's probably as simple as that. Now you know,
and there might be another game where whatever they're behind
the different team, different personnel, and then on the other team.
There's a lot of different things you could say about it.
I don't think it was I think at the impression
it was a you know, a benching or whatever after
for the whiff on the on the on the on
the on the field goal camp there. I don't think
it was that obviously. I think everybody in envisions fired

(08:03):
me if it have more catches at this point, more
production at this point of the season than he has.
So I yes that maybe that is something in terms
of the Mack review of it, But I think this
is in terms of the low snaps you played this game.
I think it was just sort of a one game
where there was one part game playing in one part
what was really working, and they were going to.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
Stick with it. So maybe this is a tough question.
I mean, do you think if you were to bet
on what tight end coming out of the by leads
the team and snaps the rest of the way. Do
you still think that's up for debate or do you
think Washington has gained that Is this just a one
time usage for Washington. I know we don't know these answers.

(08:41):
I'm asking you to pull out the crystal ball, but
what tight end do you think leads a team and
snaps the rest of the way.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
It's funny you asked that right now, because I look,
like I said, literally just left the facility. We got
the assistant coaches today, just talking to Arthur Smith. So
I'm talking to Freda Roberts. I mean Darna, I mean
obviously darnell us of human being. That's their size and
what he can do and everything, no matter what we've
had not for three years, right, and so is something
kind of more clicking for him? Are they trusting him more?

(09:10):
But I definitely at this moment, just coming out of
these conversations, definitely feel as if Darnell Washington is going
to play a lot more. Certainly he had the first
two first two seasons and we'll be and we've seen
it even up and before this last game to a point,
but be more a part of the offense going forward.
I think Aaron Rodgers has a trust and a connection

(09:32):
with him too, that that kind of surprises me. Maybe
I don't know what why, you know, you would think
as a quarterback even more you know, John who Smith
has a long history of of you know, being a
receiving threaten and dynamic threatened fined me as a history,
you know, a reliable, good tight end. But I just
felt like, and you feel like when you're Aaron Rodgers

(09:53):
talk about Darnell too, that there's a trust there. So
I don't go, I don't even know, is it going
to lemon and say I would, I wouldn't be. I
certainly would not be surprised at all. It is Washington
going forward and maybe over the thirteen games sample sized. Yeah,
I think because he the other two guys aren't. They're

(10:14):
not the same I'm not saying all that the same
player Jonny Smith and Friar Youth, but they're close to
the same player than they are to don't know Washington,
right so Washington, yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
There is, but they all play in the NBA, right.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
Yeah. So so just because for that old reason alone,
I think there might be a little bit of uh,
you know, split the division of labor other ways. And
and again yeah, you know, I don't know, you know,
you guys think, But I mean, I certainly the Row
production was better on the running game than it had
been all season. And I don't think that's a coincidence either,
that necessarily that that Washington was up there as much

(10:48):
as he was.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
No, certainly not, and with Spencer Anderson as well too.
And that what Matt and I are now calling the
corn beef package that we're bringing back from Ireland. I
feel free to you could steal that one, buzz a right,
first ones for free. Next one's gonna cost you. But ma'am,
I think you know, one of the more encouraging parts
of all that was I don't think any of us
saw that coming from Kenny g Kenneth Gainwell, I think

(11:11):
we all liked him as an addition, we all thought
he would make plays in this offense. But twenty six
or twenty five part of me total touches, nineteen carries,
six receptions, ninety nine yards on the ground, well over
one hundred yards all purpose, the two touchdowns. That to
me was a very encouraging development in the wake of

(11:31):
the absence of Jalen.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
Warren and christ the expand on that, if we assume
Warren's ready to go after the bye, do you think
that that becomes more of a closer to a committee
when they're fully healthy, as opposed to Warren just being
the bell cow.

Speaker 5 (11:48):
Yeah. Well, you remember one game, will outplayed them anyway.
That was the first game of the season, come out
of camp and everything. So yeah, especially now, I mean
I was kind of bullish on game well from from
the beginning. However, I've been blown away every time you know,
Week won him playing more and like that, I just
referenced more than Warren and I didn't think of all things,

(12:11):
and you know what I I you wonder if it
almost a happy accident when the point where you know
I'm sure when the Steelers drafted Caleb Johnson all the
way up so maybe mid August, we're envisioning if something
happened to Warren, Caleb Johnson is gonna be the bell call.
He's even the first and second down back guy. That's
probably what the plan was, right, I mean, they drafted
him high, and that was you know, the hope that

(12:32):
he blow people away and everything, and he you know,
couldn't keep hm up the field, and especially if Warren
wasn't gonna play it. I don't think that I don't
seek for them, but I don't think that they envisioned
game well, getting twenty five touches and then you know,
getting first and second down carries and as often he
did this past game, even with an injury to Warren.
So he's been good at everything I've asked him to do.

(12:54):
He's been He's showing he can be more than just
a niche back. And you know, he had that reputation
a very good on a very good team of course,
the Philadelphia over the past four years, and he you know,
it seems like he made plays a lot of time.
He's in the name. I don't think anybody thought and
you know doesn't buy the market and what they signed
him for. I guess probably no one else really thought it,
but yeah, it's it's kind of hard to came off

(13:16):
the field now in term, I mean he made play
on specialty. It's ready to just been a playmaker all
the way around and in the passing game and things
like that. So yeah, I would think it's probably more
like that where it would be you know, you know,
one to one air one beer if you want to
put it.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
So, Calvin Austin's injured. I don't have a feeling for
how long or what maybe you do. I don't know
if what knowledge we have of that injury. But they're
obviously entering a bye week. They're three and one. I
think that you have to be looking at this team
like they're very very much in the playoff mix, if
not Division champion mix. I know that there's a lot

(13:50):
of football ahead. Is this an opportunity or potentially the
time to add another receiver?

Speaker 5 (14:02):
Yeah, I mean you yeah, it's I will say one
thing that during this during the day, and who knows,
I mean, like you said, I don't know for sure.
I kind of got the impression that Austin maybe wasn't
as as serious or as bad as long as it
could be out as as was thinking, maybe the last
forty eight hours or so, and we'll see how that
plays out. And it's kind of hard. I mean week four,

(14:24):
you know, early October, you know what the what is
like a trade market situation at that point, I don't
know what they have Hodgkins. They have Hodgkins on the
Hudgens on the practice squad. I guess he'd be the
next man enough to get a hat.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
Probably not interrupt and West and I are going to
go around the league later. But I mean it is
pretty clear that there are some teams at this point
that maybe had high hopes when the season started that
they're shot. I mean like it's easier to talk trade
with the Saints now than when they're owing up the
Raiders or you know, right or right. It just seems
like the time might add up a little bit better.

Speaker 5 (14:57):
And that's true. And I you know, we've learned of
the last few years. I mean during that deadline week
for sure, there's been a lot more trades the past
five years where I feel like there were seasons, you know,
a decade ago. You make it a deadline of no
trades there, you know, at least a maybe just something
that you know in no big name trades or starting
caliber trades, there would be some weeks or some seasons
and like last year there were there were a lot

(15:18):
and so maybe I just need to reevaluate maybe teams
and read more open minded to that that kind of
thing where you know, in early October trade. Maybe I'm
just thinking over history, but there that there might be
teams and scenarios where that is. Yeah. I mean especially though,
because I mean we've you've talked. I think you guys,
I'm sure you have, whether with me or not. But
that'll worry with the Steelers going into the season would

(15:39):
have been if something happens a DK. Okay, what has
happened to DK? Yeah, but now something the next worst
thing that could happen and something happened to Calvin. So
now now something's happened to DK, and then I mean,
if you thought it was a concern before, if there's
no Calvin.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
And no DECA, won't you put that there?

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Chris, I don't mean to you guys are lucky early hour.
You just came from Ireland. So I I think if
you kind of act whatever I can bring in terms
of negative juju or whatever it might be. But you know, listen,
last year they brought and they probably brought in a
wide receiver at the deadline. There was always known when
they're smoke, there's fire. They've been looking at wide receivers

(16:16):
over the entire you know, July and August and September
year early on, so they've been aware of it. Now
they're down a guy who's probably one of the most
pleasing surprises I think on the team in terms of
I didn't know if he could be a viable number two,
and I think he's Calvin Austin's had about a good
season is so far as as I expected him to have.
So they're down a guy like that now. So they're

(16:38):
already we know good receivers, so I'm I'm sure if
if something comes along that it won't be that he
hasn't hit to make a move.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Chris, last one I've got for you, man.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
It was good to see Deshaun Elliott back and doing
his thing on Sunday. You know, Matt and I kind
of talked about this, like he's he's not going into
the Hall of Fame like TJ. Watt and Jalen Ramsey,
Cam Hayward, you know, all those guys going to be
in that that conversation. But I think his value to
this defense and to that secondary is undeniable.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
Yeah, you know, I was about to say something the
effect of but it's almost it's like almost back in
a camp him. It's I don't want to purn like
he's a blue guy, right because the glue almost but
he's better than a glue guy because he's more more
you know, productive or more noticeable. I'm not put that,
you know what I'm saying, but he is a glue
guy in terms of both in terms of keeping things together.

(17:30):
He just makes play. It's kind of crazy, you know
that did see the impact he made when he came
back and the way he you know, some of the
impact he made last season, and when they brought him on,
he BELI was his fourth team or third team in
three years, and he just kind of see them like, Okay,
he's a nice, nice depth feast. Okay, it'll work out.
And and what he's been able to do and and

(17:50):
and the impact he had in that game, and you're right,
all the other guys you talk about and everybody's making
like I said, in the last two games, seem like
everyone the defense made a splash player or two. And
he comes back his first game back, and you know,
just to even that tackle what was it on the
fourth and one that might have been a touchdown once
once Mason broke to the line the fourth and one,

(18:13):
even what was the second quarter he made a tackle
there in the open field that that that maybe you know,
Mason breaks free and in a couple of plays later
this year, we's got an interception out of it. So
you know he's and again he in terms of the
you can tell the respect he has kind of from
his and all those guys are big names, a lot
of a lot of his peers in that secondary, big

(18:36):
names who have lengthier resumes and are paid more than
him or whatever. But you can tell they all have
a respect for him. And yeah, he is. Uh. He's
been one of the best little firs of under the
radar freedom signings the Seelers have made over the recent years.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
Here Chris Damski.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Make sure you're checking out his work in the trim,
listening to him on the Steelers Blitz on the Steelers'
audio network Buzz. Thank you for the time as always,
and we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
All right, guys, you as well.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Chris Adamski there kind enough to give us some of
his time on a very busy day. Matt, and we return,
what do you say we go around the league because
there is on the AFC North, there is a lot
going on.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
Big injuries, There's a lot happened in the league.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
You you said to me a couple of times while
we were in Dublin, because this is something we'll peel
black the curtain on the other side.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
We gotta get a break. But watching the NFL in
Dublin is very difficult.

Speaker 4 (19:24):
That was my least favorite part of the trip, baby.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Watching college football.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
Gosh, I had some everything issues because it was a
great Saturday slate of college football games that we wanted
to watch as well too. Uh but uh, Matt said
to me many times that you know, I can't afford
to miss a whole weekend of NFL that show.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
I can't just vanish like nothing happened in Week four.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
And especially this week four because there was a lot
going on. We will discuss all of that when we
return on the other side. Well, Shuuler Matt Williamson. It's
the Drive on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network,
your tunes.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
About Drive on your twenty four to seven home of
the Black and Gold Steelers Nation Radio.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
A wild Week four certainly for everybody in Steelers Land.
But Matt, it was a wild Week four across the
National Football League. Yeah, some big surprising results. Hey, hand
up if you had Jackson Dart beating the undefeated Chargers
on your Bengo card, Yeah, I mean a devastating injury
to Tyreek Hill, another loss for the Ravens, and maybe

(20:44):
some rough injuries in there.

Speaker 4 (20:46):
Yeah, lot going on.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
There's a lot going on. But Matt, let's start in
the AFC North and you kind of keep it tied
to the Steelers. You mentioned this a little bit just
a minute ago with our buddy Chris Adamski. The Steelers
are in a great position right now. I mean the Browns.
We all knew that this season was going to be
tough for them. Their defense is good to very good, but.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
It might be the best in the league. We'll start
talking Browns soon. Everyone steels going to steam roll the
Browns because that game might be thirteen nine.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Sorry, that's all right nine thirteen. Yeah, the day that
WU won the last backyard bro, I had to tell
you what.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
I didn't know that. That's kind of cool.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Yeah, it's a nice little shove it back up their backside.
I mean, obviously that result was not nearly as big
as third.

Speaker 4 (21:30):
But it's a nice coincidence. I like it.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
It's also a nice coincidence that after blowing a ten
point lead to their biggest rivals, the pitt Panthers blew
a seventeen point lead in their first a c C game.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
I digress the Browns. We all have kind of known
what their situation is, and they're turning to doing Gabriel.
It sounds like, oh is that happening? That's what That's
what it sounds like.

Speaker 4 (21:51):
Yeah, I knew that time was gonna come pre Steeler game,
no doubt.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
No doubt. And Cincinnati, of course, in the absence of
Joe Burrow, it's just difficult to navigate eight for what
he is and what he means to them.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
I don't know how much you watched that game, but
I mean I watched a lot of Bengal.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
I watched the first Halt Viking right before I.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Was like the Tom and Jerry cartoon of like taping
my eyelids th my foreheads orange exactly right, Clockwork Warder.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
It's a little last year, but yeah, they're horrible. I
mean I threw this out on Twitter deep into that
game after watching them get destroyed by the Vikings defense.
That might be the worst offense in the league. And
last year they probably were the worst defense in the
league and don't look noticeably better. I mean, like they
could pick in the top five this year. It's that bad.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
And I can really.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
Chase getting upset and Higgins and Hendrickson and I'm not
predicting on maybe coaching changes, like it's.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
They could be they might be the first team to make.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
A toilet move. Yeah, I mean it's really really hard watch,
Like they can't even line up, they're spiraling penalties.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
And I know you, I know you have said this,
I've said this. We don't love saying nice things about
the Steelers division rivals, but my goodness, the way that
team looks before Joe Burrow got there, what they were
is a franchise, the Heights that he took them to
Super Bowl an AFC Championship game in back to back years,
which they hardly ever do, and man, when he's out,

(23:15):
there's just so they unravel.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
He friends so much last night and said Joe Burrow
should be the MVP for how bad the Bengals look. Like,
I know what you're saying, right, Legitimately, he's that important
and what a superstar he is, but he ain't around.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
But he ain't around, And I think we all knew
that was going to be the case the moment he
went out.

Speaker 4 (23:34):
Yeah, I would pick the Browns to beat the Bengals
right now in the neutral.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Stadium just because their defense.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
They wouldn't even win thirteen to nine, Matt, they'd win
nine to three, three nothing safety safety, defense to nothing,
like a good baseball score.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
Or how the Steelers started against the Vikings in this
first the first Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
Uh, someone said to I forget who told us this pregame,
But it's the first time these Steelers and Vikings logos
have been painted in an end zone since Super Bowl nine.
Because I guess in the London game there was something different.
They didn't just have the two teams because I was like, wait,
didn't happen in London? No, they had different end zones.
I guess for that game over there. But Matt, I
think the biggest shocker. We all knew the Browns were

(24:16):
gonna struggle this year despite what the defense could and is.
Yeah yeah, you know could become and has become. I
think again the moment that Joe Burrow was ruled out
for three months, we all knew what that was going
to look like. But I don't think any of us
saw this coming. With the Baltimore Ravens, not only are
their results gone the wrong way, they are now getting
decimated with key injuries as well.

Speaker 4 (24:37):
So when we talked Browns next week, they'll play another game.
They're gonna play the Vikes. None of these teams have buys.
So where I think it's really interesting in this division,
in particular Steelers a side where these teams are contrary
to preseason expectations. Like most people thought the Browns and
Saints were gonna be in competition in the overall y

(24:59):
you know so, but I'm going to say I promised
you when we preview Browns a lot of positive things,
you know, like Judkins and Schwassinger and Grant, like they're
young guys. Okay, you know, maybe even the quarterbacks look
Okay after a week, who knows, you know what I mean,
But at least I can see Browns fans having something
to get excited about. And I get this all the
way right now, Miles Garrett might be the best football

(25:21):
player on the planet right now. You thought it was good.
I know if I hates him here and I absolutely
crushed me for this. He's better now than he's ever been.
Like he leveled up, which is insane. It's like Lawrence
Taylor out there right now anyway. So there's actually good
things going on in Cleveland. But they have such a
low ceiling. I mean, it's going to be a long year.
We know that talked about the Bengals a lot, way

(25:41):
worse than I even would have expected. Minus Burrow, I
thought they might be okay. I mean, if we start
usually Tuesday's power ranked days, I don't even know if
we'll do it this week, but they would be really
really low on my list for what they look like.
The Ravens I thought were going to be the best
team in the league, you know, like if my preseason
power ranks were one. Now they have a lot of

(26:03):
things going against them too, but it's mostly injury related.
So they can obviously bounce back, don't get me wrong,
but even going you know, early in the season, tough games,
they were losing it both lines of scrimmage, which is
not Ravens like and kind of like the Eagles but
less even more so, they're designed to play with the lead.

(26:25):
And where I'm going with this is there's a lot
of snaps now that Henry's not even on the field,
you know, like Henry's only eclipsed I think fifty yards
in Week one. That's Derek Henry, right, And maybe he's
losing it right bad fumbles, you know, and I'm not
even blaming him entirely. Maybe he's losing a step. That's

(26:46):
some day it's gonna happen. I thought it's gonna happen
for the last four years and it hasn't. But they've
been losing up front. And I'd never loved their own line,
but they've always made it work because they have Ricard
and the two best ball carriers are going to see.
But that's not happening. They're not playing with leads. This
Lamar injury is odd. I don't know how much you
saw of it.

Speaker 3 (27:06):
It didn't look like anything serious, and no kind of
tossed his helmet and that was that.

Speaker 4 (27:11):
It almost was like I'm done playing today that it works,
you know.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
I typically, Matt, I'll tell you. I don't know if
you and I have had this discussion. I think Abady quit.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
Everybody who does this for a living has certain narrative
things that drive them crazy. I hate it when people
call NFL players soft.

Speaker 4 (27:29):
Oh, like live four minutes in their shoes.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
Yeah, you go out there and get in a car
crash seventy times a game and tell me they're soft.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Right.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
Another one of those things is is I hate it
when people just that guy quit, that guy gave up
that guy like you don't know their headspace, but man,
it's hard not to feel that way after what we
saw at Arrowhead Stadium.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
Yeah, and I bet jan Thornhill will tell you that
the Browns defense quit about this time last year too,
you know.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
So there are certainly like it definitely does happen. It's
hard to put your best decision is out there for
a reason.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
Yes, and they're all human beings. And frankly, I thought
this was the most energetic game the Steelers played. I mean,
mister Rooney talked to him. I mean like you can
understand why we're all people, you know.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
Who've been waiting fifty years for this game. Boys, you
better go win it.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
And like I bring up the Browns because their defense
was also good last year, until the offense is like
I can't, you can't. I need something, and it looks
like Lamar was fed up and maybe they were gonna
pull them. Anyways, at that point, the game was pretty shot.
But he goes over the sidelines. The Rose's helmet sits there,
and I didn't see any trainers working on his leg.

(28:36):
I mean, like, I'm not saying he's faking it. I
just don't know that he was planning on playing the
rest of the way. But needless to say, if he
misses any time, they're a flat out below average team
because Cooper Rush thinks and doesn't fit their system at all.
I'm shocked that that's their choice for the backup. I mean,
like when at least when they had Huntley. Huntley's digressed

(28:58):
since them, but at least it made sense you could
still do yours.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
He was Lamar type, yeah.

Speaker 4 (29:03):
And you can still give it to Henry and distribute
the football, you know, Like, I don't understand Rush being
their backup behind a bad line, playing behind, I mean,
that's gonna be a tough thing to overcome. If Lamar
misses any time, it wouldn't shock me at all. If
he's fine, sure, I don't know who knows, But the
defense needs to be brought up because they're getting pushed
around the line of scrimmage, which you just don't see.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Let's see it.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
And now their best defensive player or best defensive lineman
who's been out, Mattabuke is way better than most people
might think. I mean, he's a top ten defensive tackle
all day long, but he's out for the year. And
they also lost Pierce to retirement last year, who's this
big and never moves, and you know.

Speaker 2 (29:44):
Like Marlin Humphreys hurt now too.

Speaker 4 (29:46):
And Wiggins is hurt. Like there's other ripple effects in
the back seven. But it starts up front. And I
don't know if it's gonna get better upfront on either lines, right,
I mean, it might get worse.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
Their offensive line I think could certainly get better because
they there.

Speaker 4 (29:59):
Yeah, but it wasn't my favorite unit to begin with.
The guards and you know.

Speaker 3 (30:03):
And Matt, I mean they've got Houston this week, who
won a game and feeling better about themselves, their best
performance of the season. They're still desperate to keep stacking
some wins. Then they've got the Rams, you know.

Speaker 4 (30:14):
Oh yeah, one of the.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
Better I don't think one of the elite teams in
the NFC, buts are better than the Ravens right now,
one of that second tar teams in the NFC, certainly.
I mean they even if they split those, they'll be
two and four.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
I mean, yeah, they are.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
If Lamar is healthy, they could certainly turn this thing around.
Oh yeah, but this has been about as close to
a disaster of a start other than maybe like a
significant injury to Lamar that they could have had in
the month of September.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
Yeah, and they I mean, losing to good teams is excusable.
But one in three isn't kind to percentage to make
playoffs things like that. Like I wanted to bring this
up in our one the percentage of going to the
playoffs since two thousand when you're three and one is
basically like two thirds those teams go two and two,

(31:02):
it's like thirty eight percent, you know, So like just
that win for the Steelers, I know it's only one difference,
but at three and one is if you lose your
three and two, you're still winning. You know, Like, I
know some of this is just nonsense.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
But you're right, and those numbers are the way that
they are.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
They are, and one in three is unkind.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Even in this seventeen game now era, even in the
extra wild card game era, it's incredibly unkind. The other
side of that, for the Steelers, I had this in
my notes for us to get to at some point
this week ESPNFPI. Steelers now have a seventy one percent
chance to make the playoffs. Yeah, it was about fifty
four percent last week. They now have a seven point

(31:39):
three point chance to make it to the super Bowl,
which is up from three and a half percent last week.
So just just a one win in that month of
September to get the three and one makes a huge difference.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
And I'm sure the Chargers went down, the Ravens went down,
you know, like totally, your your opponents to make the
Super Bowl have are helping you, you know at the moment.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
Yes, And I wonder what the percentage for the Steelers
to win the division now is a bet you have
to be at least fifty percent.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
Well, I know in Vegas odds the leader is the Ravens.
Still still what shocks me a little? Yeah, I mean
I did being fine, I get it, but it shocks
me a little. But they're still the leader in the clubhouse.
Like the Bills, if you bet on the Bills win division,
you get like no money, I mean like you'll you
make like.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
A penny, no chance, right right right?

Speaker 3 (32:23):
You got to bet ten dollars to get five bucks
back probably, yeah, and the Bills to win the division.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
Matt, Just a couple other things here.

Speaker 3 (32:30):
Crazy one in overtime between the Packers and the Cowboys
that ends tied at forty.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Between Michael Parsons and his old employer.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
So this one I didn't see the second half. This
was a perfect example of being in Ireland being crazy.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
This game started at one thirty in the morning, Doberlin time.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
Yes, and I had planned we had a flight seven
o'clock Doublin time. And obviously we got up. I mean
I slept in a little bit before we went over
to Croke and No. But my plan was I can't
just not watch games, so I'm gonna come back after
the Steeler game watch Red Zone in the in the
bus on the way home, which I did, which was cool.

(33:07):
Watch four o'clock games in my room, record some stuff,
watch this one, and maybe stay up all night and
just get on the bus. And you know, by the
time Sunday football end. Sure, I couldn't figure out a
way to watch Sunday night football.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
You can't find anything. You cannot find American sports. Your
apps don't work, they're all blocked.

Speaker 4 (33:23):
It was nuts.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
It's not on TV.

Speaker 4 (33:25):
So I found this weird version, like if you're watching
this behind us, somebody was playing the game with like
this logo in the middle. So I'm laying there, strike
glasses on, just kind of listening watching. End up dozing
off at halftime, so I didn't catch the second half,
so be it. That's pretty much all I missed. I'll
take that. I ended up getting an extra hour sleep

(33:45):
as opposed to zero. I got an hour and a half.
But crazy game. I mean, Green Bay is a little
rattle too, you know. I mean, you tie a not
so great Cowboys team, you got beat by the Browns.
You know, we talked power ranks. They were one or two,
you know, substantially here for a while. I'm not super worried,

(34:06):
but that wass is interesting. That's good, you know, like
they're this is kind of like their Giants game, you know,
where it's just high scoring, whoever's ball last wins or
ties pickings blows up. They're interesting, you know.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
Yeah, absolutely that that one was.

Speaker 4 (34:19):
The defense is good.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
That one was wild.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
The offense is good, but their man, their defense is
really rough.

Speaker 4 (34:26):
It is really rough, really bad.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Also wanted to run by the.

Speaker 4 (34:29):
One thing I want to do. I was about to
bench in too, maybe like next Monday or Tuesday, before
we really get into the Browns. Let's repick who we
think is gonna end up in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
I love that.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll do some we'll do some bigger
picture stuff like they were saying, let's do let's repick
the Vision winners and who's gonna get into the wild cards,
and maybe we can even do like m VP and Defensive.

Speaker 4 (34:48):
Player in that kind of stuff. Time this week.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
Super condensed that we still do need to get to
some of our regular power rankings and stuff like that
this week, but we will have plenty of time, especially.

Speaker 4 (34:58):
More about like college quarterback.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
We were talking about that we're gonna do because we
missed that.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Uh last week, we'll do some beef your college football
and college quarterback conversations. There's some new names into the forefront.
Llow Dante more from Oregon. My goodness, speaking of crazy
Ones Valley. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
Yeah, because.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
I left the Temple Bar district of Dublin Saturday because
I wanted to go back to my hotel and watch
college football, watch the WVU game. I'm glad I didn't.
We got smoked by Utah. I listened to the whole
thing on the audio stream.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
A lot of big games Georgia, Alabama, penn State, Oregon.
You cannot watch them in Dublin.

Speaker 4 (35:39):
It's nuts.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
Your ESPN apps blocked, your Fox apps blocked. I had
my buddy text me his direct TV login that's.

Speaker 2 (35:45):
Blocked as well.

Speaker 3 (35:46):
Vps are the only way to do it, and I
wasn't just going to go to the effort to do that.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
Just from one day.

Speaker 4 (35:52):
Is because I'm old.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
But you can change your computers brought so you could
have tricked your computer into thinking that you're still broadcasting
you're still located in Pennsylvania.

Speaker 4 (35:59):
Because even like NFL Plus, it told me doesn't work there.

Speaker 3 (36:02):
And I'm like, why do I pay for this you know,
I understand the frustrations of you know, some of our
Netflix didn't work. I mean none of anything anything work
and again they don't brought they don't.

Speaker 4 (36:14):
I was going to spend money to do it for
one game?

Speaker 3 (36:16):
No, right, right, Like they have Sky Sports over there,
but that's about it. They don't have the saturation of
full time sports networks like we do either.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
No. I thought maybe even Sunday football might be on TV,
you know, like going through the guiye, nope, you know,
no chance.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
Found some Gaelic football soccer. But but nothing, nothing, nothing.
I won't miss no, absolutely. That was that was one
of the things that was a big of a bit
of a bummer. And I understand why. Like, you know,
the guys that we know, Mick and Greg and some
of our friends through the Steelers that that do content
stuff that we've met that are from Ireland always talk
about how difficult it is to watch American sports.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
You had to get up at weird times.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
I met another it's more than that. That same guy
that I was telling you that I talked to the
Bengals fan. I was like, so your big NFL. I
was like, do you like you watch hockey? You watch baseball,
you watch basketball, you follow any other American sports. And
he was like, no, it's impossible, because he's like it's hard.
He's like, it's hard enough for me to follow.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
The NFL is the easiest to acces, he said, it.

Speaker 3 (37:09):
Is hockey, he said it is, But like right, and
he said, and for at least the NFL, the one
o'clock games start like six.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
O'clock over here, it's perfect.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
I can, man, It's like the hockey and the basketball
games that are all at seven o'clock, seven thirty at night.

Speaker 2 (37:21):
They started one thirty in the morning.

Speaker 4 (37:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
Yeah, So that was, uh, maybe the one thing that
we didn't enjoy about our time in Dublin.

Speaker 4 (37:29):
Yeah. I really highly disliked it, to be honest with you,
but that such as life got through it. We got
through it a pretty good feel. What happened in the
week four though around the league.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Yeah, you know, I think so. I think so.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Like I said, I saw you grinding it away when
we were when we were on the plane ride coming back,
I was watching Shawshank Redemption. Matt was doing real work
up A little bit. Kind of tells you about the
difference between the two of us when we were turned.
On the other side, here's a teaser for you. Matt
has a great story of an encounter with a Steelers
legend at the airport. Yeah, we'll discuss that in a

(37:58):
couple maybe one or two other Irish anecdotes before we
get up out of here. On the other side, Weser
Matt Williamson. It is the Drive on Steelers Nation Radio
on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
Your tunes about Drive on your twenty four to seven
home of the Black and Goal Steelers Nation Radio.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
Final segment of the Drive here on a victory Tuesday.
Wes Shuler, Matt Williamson, Matt, All throughout the week, we'll
be sprinkling in some cool stories, some cool anecdotes about
both of our first times in Ireland. An incredible experience
for everybody. Will kind of bobbing. We between real football
conversation and some fun behind the curtain stuff of the
things we got to do and witness and see and Dublin.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
But when we landed.

Speaker 3 (38:56):
Back at the Pittsburgh International Airport yesterday, you had something
pretty stinking cool happened to you.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
Yeah, I just wanted to tell a story because it
it it was the timing was awesome. Like I mentioned,
I really enjoyed the trip. I think you did too.
I think everybody involved it and there were a lot
of really cool moments. And I'm gonna throw one quick
story out to that. I hope I'm not stealing your thunder.
But we were on the air and they told us, hey,
we're gonna get a Steeler legend, you know, at the

(39:23):
at the bar, and we knewho it was gonna be.
And frankly, we were like coming down the wire, We're like,
I don't think we're gonna Get'm.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Texting the Steelers behind the scenes people, Yeah, hey, tell
me who this is gonna be.

Speaker 2 (39:33):
Because nice to know who it is.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
The radio host, I mean, like like to know who
we're about to interview. And we've got like ten minutes
left in the show.

Speaker 4 (39:38):
I thought we weren't going to get them, which is
something often happens in radio and whoever shows up, it
gets there laid or whatever. And it was Mark. He's
Pounty and it was like whoa and that place went
nuts and he was super cool and it signed a
million things afterwards.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
And was plugged some Guinness with us. Yeah in this segment.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
So that was awesome.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
It's on the podcast from our SAT Today show. If
you go back in the podcast feed, last hour, last segment,
you can hear the pouncy badness. It was least erupted
out of control.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
And met a lot of cool people, met celebrities, you know,
I mean like we were exposed to a lot of
cool stuff. I mean when I'm saying Bill Murray was there, right.
But anyway, we land, I go to tell my personal
story and you know, I go get my bag and
we're exhausted. It's it's it's finally over.

Speaker 3 (40:30):
Just plane for seven and a half hours after four
days of work and play and not much sleep and
not much as sadly plenty of guinness as people can imagine.

Speaker 4 (40:39):
Sure, why would you not? And I pick up my
bag and off the off the thing, and I'm like,
I'm home. I don't have to wait for anything else.
Now that's the last step of things you have to
you have when travels. I gotta wait for this thing
to land, and I gotta wait for to get off
the plane. Then I gotta wait to get my bag.
So I grab that thing, saying I am home free.
I can just sprint to my car, sprint home. See

(41:01):
the fan whatever. I'm finally done. I get a tap
on the shoulder and I'm like, and that sounds really conceited.
I don't mean it to be.

Speaker 2 (41:10):
But because everybody gets it in that situation, yes.

Speaker 4 (41:12):
I assumed it was someone on the plane. And to
be frank, the people on the plane were money people.
They were there were there was no.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
There were some high rollers on the charter with us.

Speaker 4 (41:24):
I loved all of our interactions in the bar, but
it wasn't some annoying drunk bugging. I knew in the
at that situation it was gonna be somebody that was
going to be worth talking to. But I don't want
to because I'm done, you know, Like, and I loved
all the people coming up to us. Love the show,
big fan of your work.

Speaker 2 (41:41):
It was great, it was awesome.

Speaker 4 (41:43):
I'm not at all thank you, thank you, thank you,
thank you.

Speaker 2 (41:46):
But at this point you just want to get home.

Speaker 4 (41:48):
I just wanted to get home and I didn't want
to tap a show on the shoulder and hey, what'd
you think of this guy? Or blah blah blah blah blah.
And I turned around and it's John Stalwarth, who I
didn't realize what I was told was on our plane
there and must have been on our plane there, and
older gentleman wearing a Hall of fame like zip up,
and I'm like, that's John freaking Stalwarth. And he says, hey,

(42:11):
you enjoy everything, and I'm like, I had a great time,
you know, how about you? I had a great time.
But well, He's like, I just wanted to take time
to tell you how much I really enjoy your work.
Keep it up. I'm like, John, just tell me not
be over right. They're like, I can't believe he knew
who I was or and it's all I didn't want
to bug him. I made it pretty clear I was

(42:32):
a fan of his work as well, and I happened
strangely enough on this show. Compared Justin Jefferson to John Stalworth,
I think that they're very similar. Stalls was going to
be on the on the plane but once in a while,
especially with this team. And you mentioned I was born
in nineteen seventy three, so any super Steeler is still
whoa you know, like like it was my dad's favorite player.

(42:53):
I mean, like, how could not be? And was like, wow,
John Stalworth respects my work. I'm like, perfect way to end.

Speaker 2 (43:00):
The like on top of the whipped cream on the
Sunday that was.

Speaker 4 (43:05):
I use this all the time. I was a creative
writing major in college basically because there was a path
of least resistance to get a degree. But if I
were to turned that in as the end of my
short story and John Stalwarts happed, I'm like, this isn't
even believable, dude. You got to cut that chapter out,
you know, like that ain't happening. But what a great
way to end a great trip.

Speaker 2 (43:24):
It. You like, when you do this for a living,
it sometimes it can get a little mundane and a
little you know.

Speaker 4 (43:30):
Like any job. I'm sure, right, I'm sure dentists think
the same thing or whatever.

Speaker 3 (43:34):
Moments like that, it's like you're it's like you're fifteen
years old all over again, and this is what it's
all about.

Speaker 4 (43:40):
Yeah, mel Blunt came on the Drive a training camp
five years ago and Dale may find me like you
had a fan moment there. I'm like, yes, yes, yes, absolutely, yeah.

Speaker 3 (43:48):
When we get to interview Santonio Holmes at the combine,
usually when he's out there for me, that's like Antonio
in the back of Santonio in the back of the
end zone. Toe tap. I'm eighteen years old about to
graduate high school. Like, that's one of my I think

a bunch of stuff over there. But that's stalls, you know,
I mean, come on, that's incredible. I had a poster
on my wall of him or you know, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:39):
Such a such a cool story. You texted me right
after it happened. You were so giddy about it. You
had to tell somebody who would appreciate.

Speaker 4 (44:45):
It exactly because I was going to be like, oh, man,
I don't want to have one more conversation, but I'm like,
I'm not gonna.

Speaker 2 (44:52):
Half an hour and top of this.

on top for me.

Speaker 2 (44:57):
