Speaker 2 (00:45):
Good afternoon, Steelers Nation, and welcome to another week, another
day of practice. It's a Tuesday here on the campus
of Saint Vincent College and the Steelers are in action
in pads in front of us here as we turn
the page on what is the first week is kind
of like a half week, but by by you know,
calendar ways, if you will. The third week of training
(01:07):
camp here now, Matt, kind of the six days of
straight practice marathon behind us. A day off yesterday, now,
it'll be three days here this week before hitting the
road to Jacksonville for some preseason action. And I expect
beginning today some intense, some physical, some some high energy
practices out here.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
I would assume. I mean, we had a a spirited,
padded practice last time we were here day off, but
we didn't do backs one backers and some of the
most physical drills. I would think this sets up perfect
for all those things. You know, I'm guessing, but I
would imagine, and then tomorrow you would speculate there in shells, right,
(01:46):
that's not in paths, yes, and then maybe a padded
one on thursdaysday.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yea day is Friday for travel.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
I keep thinking it's Monday, it's not.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
I know. Yeah, that always throws me off. That's been
the way the past two weeks is like we've had
the Monday off and then.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
It feels like the start of a week, but the
week already started without us yesterday, so.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You'll laugh at this. Tuesday night is the night that
we take out our trash in our neighborhood for Wednesday
morning pick up.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Last night I was which, I better tell my kids
to do that or it won't go Last night.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Last night I was all mixed up. But I took
the trash out last night and I got a text
from my wife this morning' done you know the trash? Yeah?
She's like, I appreciate you getting on it since you're leaving.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
But uh, plus, every holiday screws me up. My stuff
sits out there nextra day or whatever.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yes, exactly, so no, I'm with you on that.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I'm glad you mentioned that I have to tell the
fan to take it out because it won't.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Go out people helping people here, man, Yeah exactly, you know,
because yeah, as you mentioned, I'm kind of with you.
It's like every day here, it's almost like summer vacation.
When you're a kid growing up, you don't know what
day of the week it is. You just what their vacation. Like.
There's no Christmas break.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
You know what I mean, Saturday, Wednesday or night.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
I don't know if it's Saturday or Wednesday. It's just
Christmas break. I don't have school. Like when we're out here,
it's like, is their practicers they're not. That's that's really
what's on the docket.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Absolutely, so again, I do expect a good, one beautiful day.
But there's a little haze in the distance there is, ye,
I mean kind of a saying around here, and Labs
reiterated it to me the other day. Is those mountains
in the in the distance there. If you can really
make out the trees, you're smooth sailing, but they're a
(03:17):
little hazy, you know. I mean, I hope we don't
get hit by anything. But the weather report from what
I saw was fine, but always gotta be on Oh yeah,
on your toes here.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
No, absolutely, you're right. It is a bit haze nice.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, yeah, it was a little bit.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Hazy here in the Laurel Highlands. But it is a
nice day. It's uh, it's like approaching eighty degrees out there,
but not insanely sunny. There is some crowd, some cloud
cover part of me and uh yeah, not just the
absolute just heat wave that we had those first few
practices where it was in the in the mid nineties.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Uh oh man, there was a couple of days, there
was a couple.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
There was ninety ninety six every single day in there,
and it was a hot one for a while. Looks
clear weather report wise this week, but obviously, like Matt said,
you never know around here. That is something that we
will keep an eye on. But things are rolling in
front of us. As Mason Rudolph going through some walk
through things.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yes, meet up here soon. We have a very good
attendance no doubt about it. But it just reminded me
of how packed it was here over the weekend. I mean,
like the hillside there's a lot of green grass, you
could see, there was none fighting for spots, but over
the weekend. So again well attended. But man, you guys
(04:26):
really showed up over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
No, absolutely, Those weekend practices are always insane. Yeah, you know,
Friday night lights, the Saturdays and Sundays, we know, you know,
people listen. Some people are able to change around their
work schedule things like that, take a half day, whatever
the case may be, just take some time off. Some
people aren't and can only get out here on the weekends.
So yeah, it was, uh.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
You can't switch around. It's a little easier on you
if you do come uring the week at my point,
for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
And some of the you know, like if you look
up on the hill typically where all the people wait
for autographs, it's you know, maybe like a third as
many people up there as there were Saturday. Yeah, it was.
It was. It was pretty pretty chaotic, but a lot
of fun as well too. That always brings a lot
of energy. You're gonna be a good energy today on
campus as well too. With the padded practice plenty to
get to as we roll along. I did want to
(05:11):
ask you, Matt, as we kind of, you know, start
with a wider view here and and and and we'll
get into things as they get more active in practice.
But I think kind of a theme. You know, we're
just a little over halfway of camp here, and I
think a theme is kind of been defensive dominance. I
(05:32):
don't know if it's too strongly, but certainly defense being
the the unit with the upper hand, the offense being
the one little more struggles a little more of a slog.
And that's not unique, as we pointed out, that is
typically common around camps in the National Football League, but
particularly one where you've got a new quarterback and a
lot of young pieces and new pieces like the Steelers
(05:53):
offense has. But I just wanted to ask you kind
of your general philosophy. I think one of the hard
things that we do out here at camp. And it's
funny for me because now it's the complete opposite of
where it was when I started, you know, when I
first came out here, when I started in twenty eighteen,
being my first training camp, my first year with the Steelers.
Still Ben Roethlisberger still Antonio Brown. That was the year
(06:17):
that lev Bell had held out, But if you'll recall
James Connor went to the Pro Bowl as well too.
You still had that good offensive line, so you had Ben,
you had a b you had James Connor having perhaps
the best at least maybe statistical season of his career,
Pro Bowl season for James Connor, a good offensive line,
an experienced veteran offense that was one of the best
in the National Football League.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
I hope that makes you feel old because that was
a long time ago. I mean, you're a young pop
and you look even younger than you are. But I mean,
it's been a long time since a camp was dominated
by offense but defense.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yes, absolutely, and that might have been the last one.
Maybe that next year a little bit ab was gone.
Lev Bell was gone, but you still had Ben pre
Elbows and Juju was coming off of a massive year
at that point, if Juju had the huge rookie season
in twenty eighteen. But where I was going with all
that was even that twenty eighteen season, my first camp
here where the Steelers had one of the best offenses
(07:11):
in the NFL and the defense was not so good
in trying to find itself in the post Ryan Shazier era.
Right man, it took the offense a few days before
it really felt like they were the dominant unit out there. Okay,
now this has been more than a few days, but
even for an offense like that, it took them some time.
So where's your philosophy. It's one of my hardest things
(07:32):
to do out here is on a rep on a
given day and a given week, like, Okay, did the
offense really struggle or was the defense just really good? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I think this could be a long conversation or a
short conversation. You know, where you're rooting for. Everyone stands
here and now all of us are rooting for both
sides of the ball. And if one of them's awesome,
that doesn't mean the other one's terrible. But if one
of them's terrible and one of them's average, well that's
a problem. Now, as you mentioned, I definitely think this
(08:03):
needs to be reiterated that offense is always going to
take longer than defense in thirty two camps. You know,
it's just more timing. And this offense in particular is
going to have a new top rusher, a new top receiver,
a new top passer, yeah, and some other moving parts
on top of that, you know, not that they're the
only one in the league that has a lot of
moving parts. They at least have a coordinator and head
(08:25):
coach stability from a year ago. I mean there's teams
that don't. Of course. Now I've said for really since
the Ramsey trade and well before, I think this has
a chance to be the best defense in the league.
And it starts with the defensive front, but the cover
(08:46):
guys are also really really impressive, with three really good corners,
and even as good as someone like Minka is, you
wouldn't miss his presence here that much as like a
deep middle guy, you know what I mean, just because
it's he's gonna be further away from the ball. You'd
see that more on game day against an opponent in
week twelve than you would here in Latrobe. Of course,
(09:09):
so they're kind of fighting the teeth of the defense,
and I think the teeth are long and sharp and
you know, great white teeth. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's great,
But I also think it's time to be more competitive,
and I do think we it's a little unfair to
say they're just getting their doors blown off time and
(09:30):
time y. Yeah, been the case, No, because I do
think the last couple practices have been more competitive. I know,
the things that people chart seven shots, et cetera really
lean towards defense, but that's only seven plays. I mean,
let's not destroy. I mean the eyeball test has gotten
better for the offense, I would say I think today's
(09:51):
critical though. I mean, if you're gonna be truly in
pads trying to block and should mention this too. Cam
and TJ haven't been part of that dominance. I mean
camslay very little.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
It's a very good thing to point out.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
What would it look like if those two were out
there a lot? Wouldn't it be better? I'll play that
for the offense.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Cam's done, yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Mean TJ seems to be out there for Yeah, it
seems like the seven shots and maybe something else over
a team period. But your two best guys, and although
I do think Ramsey's in that equation now too, is
best players haven't been out there and you're still, you know,
when beating the offense consistently. So yeah, I'm worried because, frankly,
(10:37):
all the time we spend evaluating this team. The positions
that I was most worried about are wide receiver other
than metcalf O, line depth and even some youth with
the starters, and some continuity with the starters, and can
they all gel and work? Is one tight end to
me is not a concern at all. I think it's
(10:57):
a strength and basically I think that's shown up. Yeah, yeah,
pretty much.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
John Who and Pad have both had days where they've
they've looked the part out here.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
And I think Washington's role was expanded and he's more
noticeable out here, not just because he's the biggest human
being've ever seen. And I think Heyward's had a good
camp and even some of the death guys. The tight end,
I don't think is to blame for this. I don't
know what to think about quarterback. Like, I'm not really
worried about Rogers. I'm more excited than worried. But he
(11:26):
hasn't lit it on fire where he's putting it. You know,
this is one of my favorite quarterback things. You know,
when they talk about accuracy, every quarterback in the league
can hit the door. The good guys can hit the
door knob. The great ones can put it through the keyhole.
I haven't seen a lot of keyhole throws, you know.
I mean he hasn't been asked to do a ton,
(11:46):
but he's still learning as well. But I haven't been like, whoa,
that was unbelievable, you know, like if Josh Allen was
out here or something, and I'd say the running backs
kind of get a pass because they're not breaking any tackles.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
We've only seen two padded practices at this point as well.
You and I are three. I guess three padded practice.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we did it. We lost one because
of range where people are tuned in late, and really
if you look at the defensive positions when you break
it down in position groups like that, I'm not really
worried about any nope, going into camp and maybe less
so now even like inside linebacker Mark Robinson's doing good stuff.
You know, they added a safety of notes since camp opened,
(12:26):
you know, and you know, the depth of corner is
really showing up. The depth of d line's really really good.
What's his face? The sawyer to me has had a
better camp than I expected as a rookie too, So
I guess take that how you want. But the preseason
will be very telling I think for the offense, and
(12:49):
I think today will be very telling.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Yeah, today is uh is a day where you want
to see them again, not even.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Down the coaching staff's ruled with the offense. I'm a
feeling these I has heard about it over the time
we were away.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Yes, yes, oh absolutely, I have a feeling that they
you know that there was a lot of hay. It
hasn't been good enough, not even close to this standpoint
from the offensive side of things, and like you mentioned there,
I think, especially last week, there were times in the
journey out here that you saw them find some footing,
you saw them make some plays. But it hasn't been
(13:22):
as regular and hasn't been consistent.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
It hasn't been a fifty to fifty split.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
No, you know, hasn't even been probably sixty forty for
the most part. No, which if it was sixty forty
or sixty five thirty five even, you know, you could
probably live with it, because, as you mentioned, this should
be one of the best defensive units, if not the best,
in the entire National Football League. But it can't be
that big of a discrepancy between your offense and your defense.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
No, No, because it's pretty clear and as we know,
that's just been a theme for too long. You know,
you referenced twenty eighteen. Since you start coming up, it's
been a pretty good, strong five years with a different quarterback,
with similar question on the first week of August when
we're sitting up here and they went geld yet maybe
they will? Who they won't? You know, this Wilson guy
(14:06):
is showing promise, but who knows Fields is exciting? Pickett's
a rookie. Is he gonna turn it up? There's always excuses,
and you can take that good or bad. I mean
I always had I always like using the word excuses
or real answers, you know what I mean, Like these
are legit concerns and or sometimes after a while it's
like we just make excuses for these guys. You know,
(14:29):
I used to make the joke. You don't know how
helmember you remember like the beginning of Sam Bradford's career.
He was the first pick in the draft, and he
was a super talented kid, and I thought he was
a really really good player, but he had like a
it's kind of like Trevor Lawrence. It's had a million obstacles.
You know, he's in a bad system coaching changes. Oh,
just when he starts to look good injury. Yep. And
(14:50):
I used to say on the air back then, and
that's true. True with Lawrence, he's probably a better example
because it's more recent. I could easily be his defending
attorney or his prosecuting attorney, you know what I mean.
I can make a really strong case for both, and
I'm kind of tired of doing that with the Steeler offense,
you know what I mean, Like, let's step it up.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Yeah, don't don't make me be the defense attorney, you know.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Right right, because I'll tear you up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Just just leave beyond reasonable doubt that you're improving out
here and getting better.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Don't let me be the prosecuting attorney, because I I'll
put you in jail.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Exactly right, exactly right, uh, stretching ongoing in front of us.
That means things will pick up here in just a
few minutes. Let's not put anybody in jail today. Let's
let's get to our first break. We'll paint the picture
for effort. Except for maybe the person who hit and
run my car a couple of weeks ago. We could
we could put we could put them in jail. That
person is guilty as charged. We're gonna take our first
(15:41):
break of the day here today. Uh practice gonna pick
up here soon on the other side. We'll bring you
all the moving and the shaking as we roll along
on another busy day here on campus at St. Vincent
College and a hot but a little overcast Latrobe, Pennsylvania
as well. West Schuler and Matt Will sent a special
edition of The Driver. With you here until five o'clock
(16:03):
as we rock and we roll on Steelers Nation Radio
on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Iheartradios. Live coverage of twenty twenty five Steelers Training Camp
is presented by Bedex where Now meets Next and also
brought to you by bud Light, Independence Health System, by
Pennsylvania One Call System, by Live Casino, Caliente Pizza and
Draft House by Tom's Appliances, South Hills Auto, Laurel, Highlands
(16:37):
Visitors Bureau, we Max Select Realty, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop,
and by us Steel.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Back in the Booth here high at up High a
top part of me Chuck Nolefield at St. Vincent College,
as we are getting another practice for the Pittsburgh Steelers,
rolling along, Matt five if you include this one. Just
five practices left here on campus for this, this, four
more after this, which is pretty crazy how fast it happens.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
So we get these three. Yep, a nice break where
they go to Jacksonville, come home, come back for two
next week. Correct.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
And I was looking and let me double check two,
because I mean, these things change, and it can and
will change as well, with uh still the game not
being until Saturday. But I went and looked at the
weather report in Jacksonville for this weekend. Let's just say,
let's just say wet now ball me. That's the answer
that I would have expected to. I mean, it's August
(17:35):
in Jacksonville. We had a preseason game there three years ago.
I told you that story a couple of weeks ago
about how, yeah, how I wore pants like a dummy
to the broadcast when it was one hundred and three
degrees outside and everybody was laughing at me for wearing
pants and not having shorts on. That's what I was expecting, Matt.
It is. It looks like it's supposed to rain the
entire day Saturday. No no thunder or lightning on the
(17:57):
on the on the the dock.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
My next quest, which is delays. And I will say,
just for a selfish reason, there's nothing worse in the world.
I do the preseason post game show, which always go late.
Weather delays are your ultimate nightmare. I mean, it's like
we're gonna be on the a three am to night
because there was a storm.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Great, exactly right, exactly right.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
But I don't like that. I don't like weather either,
you know, Like I.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Know, Coach, when you look at the weather report for Jacksonville,
it just looks like they're in the middle of a
of a you know, a rainy time down there. But yeah,
I mean I just don't know.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
You can evaluate guys as well as you want. That's it,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
There is like the positive of hey, we're gonna have
to play in this at some point this season. It's
AFC North football.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
And coach will spin it that way, and we want.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Rather just rather just have a just normal conditions that
you can evaluate gas.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Yeah, I don't want to be like, man, I don't
I'm gonna have to give another incomplete grade after this
because every they couldn't even get you know, no, you
can catch a ball, or it was sloppy, or they
dropped the fumble or a miss snap or whatever. We'll see.
But again I prefer a little rain, but not a
torrential game changer type. I won't get some work done.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
We'll see, though. The good news is much like here
in Florida, if you don't like the weather report, just
wait about a half an hour. Things could change.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
So the first half and second half.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Yeah, and it's still a little over four days away,
you know, till we kick off. It'll be Saturday night,
so plenty of time for the weather to change between
now and then hopefully maybe by the time we get
down there, it'll be all clear skies.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Yeah, literally, this start worry about that. Yeah, exactly right.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
But that was the first thing this morning. I was like,
I was like, I'll check the weather report Jacksonville. You know,
it's game week, like we're going down there, and I do. Right, Yeah,
You'll like, I have like the schedule throughout my phone,
you know what I mean, like on the weather end
of Baltimore, and it'll change to like what Baltimore, Yeah,
Indianapolis or you know, wherever wherever it is. But yeah,
so keep an eye on that. Obviously, maybe later in
(19:52):
the week as we get closer and closer and have
a more accurate report, but a tendance report for you.
So far out here, Matt, from what I've gathered, don't
see Alex Higsmith or Calvin Anderson either one out there
to Oh, Okay, the good news is Joey Porter Jr.
Is back in pads after missing what two or three straight.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Good good high Smith. I did not expect. And I
don't think it's gonna be bad, bad or anything. I mean,
no one seems to be super worried. But it was
a groin that he suffered the last time they were
on this field. I did a short podcast about you know,
just things I've seen to this point brought him up
going that might be enough that he doesn't play one
preseason snap, which I'm fine with too. I mean, like
(20:36):
that's not even a negative. Just get him to the
starting line. Maybe he's back out here in a day
or two or whatever, But then you don't play him
in the game, and they may not even planned on
playing him that much anyways. I would think Sawyer wants
a lot of reps, and some of the other guys
just out there would be fine. So I'm not gonna
worry until it's time to worry.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Yeah, that's that's typically the mantra that I like to
take with these things. Yeah, yeah, but there it's it's
also not offer though, and Alex Hihsmith is one of
those guys. We don't need to see much of him
out here or in training camp to know what he's
capable of. But at the same time, like you mentioned,
it kind of gives you the the heapy gbs thinking
(21:19):
back to this time last year when he dealt with
something similar and then I think aggravated it. I want
to say week three, I think, and ended up missing
three games I think on the back of that. So again,
wasn't you know it was a.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
Lot of times these guys, I'll be okay for week one,
they go out there and then it still lingers for
eight weeks and nobody knows it unless you're inside the building.
You know what I mean? Correct, Oh, you have quite
a good year this year, growing for the entire year.
Kept reaggravating every second half Yep.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
And that's that's man. That's one of those annoying things.
It is not like a broken bone. You know you're
gonna be out six weeks and then you'll be here
it's kind of in the same uh you know, kind
of like in the same realm as like concussions and
things like that. There's just there's there's no exact formula
of how to deal with it in the timeline, and
some guys recover quicker than others. Some guys that the
symptoms linger a lot longer. It's just unfortunate.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
Yeah, and it is very early in this injury discussion
for him because it just happened. But I bet what's
frustrating him this practice next practice is when's the last
time I had one hundred percent get off? Yeah? You
know what I mean, things that you're you're really comfortable with.
Side notes, The Steelers top three guys or like three
in the best of the league at get off times,
(22:31):
you know, like how fast they get their first two
steps in the ground basically yep. And I bet if
you even go back to Kevin Colbert that it's something
that they really stress when they scout edge guys is
really quick get off times. So it's something that I
just mentioned that because it's a strength of his It's
always been a strength of his strength is coming out
of college. It's gotten better since he's been here. And
(22:52):
I bet he's like, that's something I could always count on.
Now if I haven't been able to just keep that
status quo for two three weeks, do I still get
off the ball away used to? You know, the hand
usage and stuff. You still kind of I know what
that is. It's a technical thing, you know, how to
set up a guy. But if that first step or
second step explosion isn't what he's accustomed to, now, how
(23:15):
do I have to alter my game? You know?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Yeah, you know that makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
I mean, I think that's how they think in that regard.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Sure, Sure, And that's you know, we always hear that too,
Like it's not just as much the injury, it's the
mental aspect of it as well to trusting trusting your
body to do what you know it can do when
it's healthy to not have those reoccurring uh you know
issues pop up or be in the back of your mind. Yeah, Matt,
looks like we have the tackles and the tight ends
working on some some blocking stuff. Yeah, in front of
(23:44):
us interior offensive linemen are on the far field, but
the tackles and the tight ends are working on some
blocking drills. Here to our left, quarterbacks getting warmed up
in front of us running backs on the far side.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Guys seventy nine is getting a lot of attention here
stay tackle too, you know right here, I think he's
one of the guys of camp that needs to be
discussed quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Yeah, I think you're right. And you know, we're getting
to that point where I don't know kind of the
camp phenom era of or time period of camp a
little bit if you.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Yeah, who's emerging that we weren't talking about, right, exactly right?
Speaker 2 (24:19):
And he is? He is certainly one of the guys
on that list.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
To get a bump from guard to tackle is a
promotion as opposed to he's a tackle. Let's see, I
doesn't have the length, doesn't the feet, he's moving in
the guard. It's not what you want in August, you know,
from a young player. With the opposite being true is.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Great, Yes, no, no doubt. I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
He's getting a lot of well, at least this practice,
which is in its infantile stage and last practice, he's
getting exclusive tackle work.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Yes he is, Yes he is. And he's listed. He's
listed as a tack, came into camp listed as a guard,
and is now listed as a tackle on the Steelers
latest depth chart that was released today.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
So that was out today. Take it with a grain
of salt. We should probably bring the depth chart up
at some point. We should, We should.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
And you know what, I got it, I got it
here right now. That was kind of one of the
first things that you know that that jumped out to
me was was Stephen Jones being listed at tackle. Now good,
that is a promotion, absolutely, and and no surprises across
the starting offensive line as everyone can imagine. And then
second team was from left to right, Calvin Anderson and
(25:24):
Spencer Anderson at left tackle and left guard, Ryan McCallum
at center, Max Sharping at right guard, and Dylan Cook
at right tackle.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Okay, so, uh, what's the face we were just talking about?
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Stephen Jones listened his third team left tackle.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
But he's doing a lot of time with the twos.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
He is doing a lot of time. He's been doing
a lot of time with the twos. Yeah, uh huh.
And so again that's in this first depth chart. Is
it's something to highlight, it's something for us to focus
on and talk about, certainly, but it is far from
it is far from chiseled and stone.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
It's right.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
I don't even know if it's written in pencil. It's
more like written in dryer. Race exactly up on the whiteboard,
Pat farm Rock on.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
The sidewalk during a brainstorm, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Exactly right, Pat Friiarmuth, John new Smith, and Darnell Washington
all listed. His first team tight ends No really, yes,
Connor Hayward's second team, JJ Gallbreath, third team.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Golbrush shows up. But he's got a boys, he has
an uphill climb.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Yes, he does certainly certainly.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Have no clue what he does on special teams either.
When I pay attention to that.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Yeah, absolutely, especially today with some pads on, we'll pay
a little bit more attention to that. Running backs Jalen
Warre and Kenneth Gainwell, Caleb Johnson, which again early early
in the process. Yeah, and then.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Traill be a little bit of a slap in the
face to gain Well for you to put him third.
I mean I think people will look into that, like,
why isn't Johnson too right? He hasn't really proven anything yet,
you know you got on that.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Yeah, and it's not like people looking at that going
oh no, that must mean he's been bad. That's not
the case either.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
No, I don't think so, imagine to prove, but still
early in this process. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Fullbacks Connor Hayward listed there as the first teamer, with
DJ Thomas Jones behind him. Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph
Will hired as the third stringer in Skyler Thompson.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
That's that one's basically setting stone.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Yeah, I completely agree with you on that. And wide
receivers Calvin Austin and DK Metcalf listed as the starters,
Robert Woods and Scotty Miller second teamers, Roman Wilson and
Ben Scronic third teamers.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
Okay, I guess maybe the most noteworthy thing we've talked
about is and again I don't even know how much
tons of thought and time they put into it, but
he'd rather Roman was with the two's. Yeah, you know
you would.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
And that's again that's one of those like to.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Keep a fire lit under him or not?
Speaker 2 (27:39):
That not right, but I know what you mean, you
would like he you know, he can't beat out Scotty
Miller on the depth chart. That might be a good sign,
but that doesn't necessarily mean that at this point.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
I no, and that doesn't mean that he's getting less
quality reps than Miller in practice either, correct, so correct.
They will pay attention to that today, to him versus Miller.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
In terms of you defensive front, Harmon Benton Hayward listed
as your three hand in the dirt guys.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Not many rookies get that that early in Steeler, No
they do not. Uh.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Loudermilk, Logan Lee listed as a second teamer and as
well as the second.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Team defensive Lowry's in the mix at the moment.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yeah, yahweh yahweh black or y a black part of
me in the in the third group. Uh, there, as
well as autumnwayo uh. And then Brandon Fioco and Dominique Davis.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Okay, I mean that's not a bad third group either.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
No, no, it's not. H Patrick Queen Peyton Wilson obviously
is the two off ball linebackers Malik Harris, Malik Harrison
and Cole hocom listed as your second teamers, and then
Devin Harper and Mark Robinson as your third teamers.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
All six of them have done something good.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Yes, yeah, yeah, yes they have. I agree with you. You
feel good about that, room, Yeah?
Speaker 3 (28:54):
Absolutely? Five at most are making the team exactly right.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
And then this was a little interesting to me. High
Smith and Tja listed as the starters for Ed Rusher
no surprise, were there but Herbig and Jack Sawyer. Well,
Herbig listed as a second teamer, and then Jack Sawyer
into Marvin Leal both listed as second team linebackers together. Okay,
if that makes sense, like they're on the same line
there of the second team Jack Sawyer and de Marvin Leel.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
I don't know how much we mentioned it Sunday, but
I've done a podcast since and just mentioned Leo. I
don't know what to take of him getting more and
more reps as an outside linebacker. So Moon is gone.
He was one of those guys that was in the
death chart and has played on the on the varsity squad,
you know, I mean mostly as a special teamer. But
he's out of the mix, and I just don't know
(29:40):
if Leo it's just like we talked about the tackle
guard thing. Is that a promotion or is that man,
we got too many d linemen and you're not making
a difference. We're gonna at least stick you somewhere that
you can show up. You know, sometimes tweener is a
bad word. You know, it's I don't know if it's
a versatility thing. Hey, he can do it all or
he can do neither. I'm a little worried about Lel's future.
(30:02):
You know, I think he should be.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
He's one of those cross road guys. Yeah, absolutely as
he and you know we've said, like he makes plays
out here. But you're right, what is your role on Sundays?
How are you getting on the fields. That's the biggest
question about I.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Mean, just like looking at him as a generic draft
prospect coming out of A and M. One of the
things on the positive column was, well, he should be
a defensive tackle on throwing downs, kick inside, athletic, up
the field, penetrator when it's a passing down, okay, but
not over Harmon Benton or Hayward. Right, So we need
(30:37):
two injuries to get that to even attempt that role.
You know, that makes it tough, it, sir? Does? It?
Speaker 2 (30:42):
Sure does. And then in the secondary, Darius Slay Joey
Porter listed as your boundary corners with Jalen Ramsey listed
as the starting nickelback.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Yeah, that's the way, should it?
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Deshaun Elliott and one thorn Hill the two starters at
safety as you can imagine.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
And I hope our listeners aren't like, well, it's Ramsey
gonna come off the field when they only have four
defensive backs. I really don't think so.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Absolutely not. Beanie Bishop listed as the second team nickelback,
Brandon Eccles and Corey Trice listed as the second team
boundary guys, and then Chuck Clark and Miles Killer Brew
as your backup safeties, and then James Pierre thirteen, Dante Kent,
Sebastian Castro all third team guys. There.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Secondary depth is definitely a strength. Feel much better good,
right right?
Speaker 2 (31:29):
I mean, to get a.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
Chance to make the team before I'd ever seen him
here and he's a third team or Pierre has been
on the team quite a bit. Kent is now battling
an injury and may end up being a who knows
an IR guy or something like that, you know, for
a later date type guy, which I think actually works
out well for him and the team. But boy, they
get a lot of good dbs.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
They sure do. I mean, I like seeing the you know,
Brandon Eckles, Beanie Bishop, Chuck Clark all listed as step guys.
You know, like you've got some real James Pierre, some real,
some real experience there in that in that group.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
They're a lot better than breaking case of emergency type
guys you know, like boy, and this happens every team,
but what was it two years ago? By about week twelve,
they were just like signing safeties and off the ball linebackers,
off the street. Yes, Walker, Mike, Michael Walker and guys
like that. Yes, anyone I can find that there's been
around the block.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Yeah, I don't think that'll be it. I don't think
that'll be an issue this season.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
You'd have to really get hit hard. Yeah, they're really
well insulated for that.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Uh. And then Special Teams kind of straightforward as everyone
would imagine, no no surprises there on the On the
Special Teams, specialists Kenneth Gainwell and Jalen Warren listed your
kick returners. Calvin Austin and Scotty Miller listed your punt returners,
everything else about where you would expect.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Austin over Miller, Yes for punt returner. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
And then Kenneth Gainwell and Jalen Warren as the kick returners.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
It wouldn't break my heart if somebody stepped up as
the backup kick returner I mean the chances that you're
gonna need that guy or slim, but I don't want
it to be warned.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
I agree, you know, I agree. I don't think you
want you you're starting running back in a line of fire.
As much as the dynamic kickoff has eliminated a lot
of us, a lot of that. I'm with you on
that one.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
Maybe one of the depth receivers or somebody like that.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Show something there, Yeah, totally.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
I'm like, how many kickoffs do you think Warren's gonna
recover or return during the preseason? I bet none. No
him out there.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
I wouldn't even put Hi out there. Wouldn't even put
him out there. Matt, let's get to a break here,
because when we come back, I believe we'll have team
periods starting here in just a few minutes. We can
bring everybody, all the action, hopefully some seven shots and
all that good stuff as we get into the meat
of the portion here of the practice, as the first
hour of the show comes to a close, we'll do
all of that and more as we returned was Shooler
(33:44):
Matt Williamson. It's a special edition of The Drive here
at Training Camp twenty twenty five on Steelers Nation Radio
on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
iHeart Radios Live coverage jub Not twenty twenty five. Steeler
Training Camp is presented by FedEx where Now meets Next
and also brought to you by CGR Wholesale Roofing and
Sighting Supply Center, by Tom's Appliances, by Always See Flagging
and Traffic Control by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Band, by
(34:17):
Schneider Downs, by Hassa's Staked Seahouse, by Your Neighborhood, Forward Store,
by Castle Rode, by Clearview Federal Credit Union, and by
us Steal.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Seven shots ongoing in front of us here as one
of the highlights of practice one of the more exciting periods.
First rep. Aaron Rodgers fade ball to DK metcalf for
a touchdown over Brandon Eccles.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Kind of had a back shoulder feel to it. Yeah,
he was going there the whole time. One on one
play action drew everybody in. That was nice.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
That's what we've been waiting to see. In the second rep,
Rogers buy some time and finds John new Smith, so
a solid start for the offense. Third rep with the
first team coming up here is Aaron Rodgers in the
shotgun with Caleb Johnson beside him. Roman Wilson moves from
right to left in motion. Rogers's back looking right, DK's
way now scanning the middle of the field, throws back
(35:09):
for Roman Wilson. Nice catch, nice throw.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
So that's two plays in a row that were kind
of late in the down, and you mentioned Rogers did
move around well on the second one. But I also
think protection held up there well too. It wasn't like
there are people flying through and they should have blown
it dead necessarily either.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
Yes, I agree with you on that.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
It's always a fine line for me of how to
award things you agree in five seconds after the snatch.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
We've talked about that a little bit over the last
few days. But yeah, I think that was a clean
three to zero for the offense there, so well blocked.
Good job by Rogers and his receivers, I thought, particularly
Troy felt Tom had a really really nice rep on
that second play. Yes, buying some time for Aaron Rodgers,
and now the second teamers will check in Aaron Rodgers
(35:52):
in the gun to give to Caleb Johnson. He gets
a nice block up into the gut. Yeah, absolutely, I
thought that was blocked well there. By by McCullum and.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Uh, the right tackle Davis said being out there too.
I mean he was with the twos.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Yep, it's a good job to seal that off on
the right side there and Caleb Johnson, I mean relatively untouched.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
No, that's a touchdown into the end of the end.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
Zone for sure for nothing offense by far, Matt, I
think they were listening to us.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
I think so as well, But I also don't see
first correct. There's a lot of first teamers out there.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
But first team defensive front.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Corners is what looked like to me.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Yeah, Echoles and Pierre were the corners out there. For
for the first teamers is it looks like maybe Sleigh
and Ramsey and some of those guys getting a rest
in this period.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
As although I think he gets in Yeah, pass.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Over the middle there to JJ gallbreath as the offense
is all signaling a touchdown and not really many guys
on the defense putting up a fight. So man, the
offense finally having their way a little fire on that
might be nothing for the offense.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
I called Jones Davis before I knew it was a
common name, and I just came out of my.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Mouth listen, mat it wouldn't be a show if we
didn't mess up somebody's name. Just remember that, all right,
Oh man, let's see. I believe it's still no Will
Howard checking it.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Okay, So we had five oh.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
We had five?
Speaker 3 (37:23):
Oh for the Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
And I think most of the people down on the
field that are tweeting about it are in agreement, as
it was a nice showing for the offense.
Speaker 3 (37:34):
Protection about clean, nice back.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
Clean out touchdown. There is that to rock ta No,
that's the Brandon Johnson pardon me, good throw there, decisive
by Will Howard, well protected, quick clean crisp right over
the middle of the boom and another Uh.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
I think it's pretty decisive sick.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
So I think so too. Yeah, I think this has been.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
So they're gonna leave Howard out there for the last round. Yeah,
because it's decided.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Might as well. It's decided. I don't need to put
the first teamers back in there to break a tie,
as Will Hard. We'll get another Rep. Jack Sawyer out
there for the defense. Howard in the shotgun handoff and
that one is bobbled by Evan Hall. It's on the ground.
The defense picks it up.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
It was Sawyer that blew that thing up.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
To Sawyer totally blew that thing up. Evan Hall, I mean,
I think he was buzz bunted in the air by
Marvin Leeyeah.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
Pretty funny. He scooped up a fumble with one hand
and goes rumbling like to take it to the house
and just kind of swerved that a good.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Time because rumbling like he's James Harrison and uh and
Jalen Warren was chasing him down and so he just said, yeah,
forget this and just bunted the ball into the air
as uh, Hey, not the best ending there for the offense, but.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Certainly that it was a real bad one.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
But it was bad, real bad one. But hey, I
think that was the best showing. I don't think I
know that was the best showing as we've seen.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Good starting in terms of setting the tone and all
the stuff we talked about. You know how important is today?
Today is important?
Speaker 2 (39:01):
It absolutely is. This week's important I think for the offense,
especially to get some to get some footing, to gain
some ground.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Looks like we're gonna get one on ones.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
And I think we are right in front of us.
This could be some fun yeah, yeah, DK Metcalf looks
like he's ready to go. Is it Brandon Eckles that's
gonna get the.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
A lot of big people on the second field as usual. Yeah,
I think we have to focus on these.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
And as we're watching the defensive backs here, there's some
there's some guys get the Veterans Day today, Jalen Ramsey
getting the Vets Day, getting the Vets Day. So we'll
see here as it will be Echos against DK Metcalf
or is this a blocking drill? This is a blocking drill?
Speaker 3 (39:37):
Okay, where are the quarterbacks?
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Who's throwing the ball? And they got they got Evan
Hall playing quarterback? Uh so yeah, so this will be
a blocking drill for the wide receivers in the defensive backs.
Looks like we're gonna have some uh some one on
ones on the offensive and defensive line or maybe part
of me, some some two on threes or some three
on twos.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
And what these corners really want is not to give
up contained down the sideline. That that's the biggest because
there's no one's gonna help you. So they're going to
always take these blocks on on that outside shoulder. And
if I force him the inside at least somebody's the
cavalry's coming.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
Cavalies, my safety, my linebacker, and.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
Then the receivers know that of course too. If I
can reach them and try to seal that edge, well
that's a lot longer for safeties and linebackers to get there.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
That makes a lot of sense. Beanie Bishop and Scotty
Miller with a good physical rep in front of us.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Yeah, and kind of got the edge there, he did.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
A little bit. Yeah, it was a nice, nice block
there by Scotty.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
Is Yeah, absolutely, said Miller held his own.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Is he is he is known to do out here
in these types.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Of Yeah, he's a tough guy. It looks like it
wasn't a heavyweight fight, but he's a tough guy.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Looks like they're gonna have I play a thirty nine
Darrel Porter newest addition to that. Okay, Yeah, and former
West Virginia Mountaineer.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
What do you know about him?
Speaker 2 (40:56):
Physical guy? His dad played in the NFL, so he's
got the blood lines. He was at w wide receiver,
defensive back. Dad believe.
Speaker 3 (41:06):
Good player.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Yes, so that was his dad. He was at WV
for two years and then transferred to the U. Transferred
to Miami for the end of his collegiate career and
kind of played a little bit everywhere. And you know,
w V one runs a lot of that odd three
three five stack right right, and so he played played
a little bit everywhere in that played on the outside,
played on the inside. He's a versatile guy.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
You know.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
He is mostly a corner, yes, and that's where the
Steelers had him listed on their depth chart today. It
was as the fourth team corner. So he's obviously got
an uphill battle. Yeah, he's He's Matt kind of one
of those I forget who. We were talking about this
somebody the other week where it's it's great to be
the jack of all trades, master of none, until the
team needs you to be a master of one thing.
(41:52):
He's got the he's got a very kind of versatile
and wide range skill set. But I don't know if
he accelerates enough in one area to you know, to
stick on with a team. But he's out there wearing
number thirty nine, were in Minka's old number, looking good
so far.
Speaker 3 (42:05):
Kind of shocked they gave that number away, but I mean,
I get it, they're not going to retire it.
Speaker 2 (42:09):
You got ninety some dudes out here a minute.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
Yea, he got a lot of defensive backs too, or
defensive bag numbers, says nice work.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
Thirty four Slay is over here now standing on the
sideline in pads. Doesn't look like he's going to participate
in this drill.
Speaker 3 (42:22):
But okay, I don't think he was in seven shots.
Speaker 2 (42:24):
No, he was not. Neither was Joey Porter Junior. And yeah,
I do think Ramsey is getting a vet S day off.
I thought I saw him sitting over on the bench earlier.
I was trying to trying to.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
Confirm, but usually he stands out and I can't quite
find it where he is.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
I know he does. He must have a hat on
or a hood up or something. And yeah, he's he's
a big body type, but he's got the hair as
well too. I was wondering if maybe he was over
here talking to Ryan Clark, but I don't see him
down there either. As a Super Bowl champion and notable
media personality, Ryan Clark is on hand here today and
practice standing down right in front of us taking all
(42:57):
this sin nice.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
We had John Cole sitting here before us, at.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
John Colb's sitting here, a legend for the day, and
he is a legend, certainly great da is John Colb, as.
Speaker 3 (43:07):
That's one of the legends that Tounch and Wolf could
never speak highly enough about. I mean, he's done a
ton for charity. Is a really good player too.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
And yeah, John Colb was part of the eulogy at
Wolfe's funeral back in March, and my goodness, did he
give an incredible speech. Made you cry, made you laugh,
and you know, Wolf would have loved it. It was perfect.
I talked to him for a minute at the reception afterwards,
and that's what I said to him. I said, you
made everybody laugh, you made everybody cry. Wolf would have
loved it.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
Very cool.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
So he is. He's a great dude. Always always good
to see him.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
I wonder thirty one to change the subject too much,
but I wonder if the thirty one other teams, how
many wide receiver edge blocking drills teams do I bet
not everyone does.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
This Baltimore maybe.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
I mean, it's certainly an Arthur Smith thing that you
need to block in order to absolutely. I mean, it's
it's more important than here than most places. And I
wonder how many coaches actually dedicate a period or two
to it in the course of camp.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
Yeah, I would imagine you could probably count him on one.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
Hand, probably pretty pretty slim man one hand.
Speaker 2 (44:08):
Maybe maybe just onto your onto your second set of fingers,
But that would be about it as a yeah, it
is a.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
It's it's pretty spirited drill.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Looked like the quarterbacks were kind of looking like they
were getting ready to walk over here.
Speaker 3 (44:20):
But now it gets wrapping. I can though, Yeah, let's.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
See, because I was gonna say, if we're about to
get we're about to get.
Speaker 3 (44:26):
Something metcalf at least block.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
Yeah, let's see this.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
Sorry, we're going.
Speaker 2 (44:30):
To metcalf against Brandon eccles. Here are they bringing Rogers
into this to throw the ball? I think we're good
by switching. We're switching drills some one. Let's stay here,
all right? Rogers drops back Metcalf breaking.
Speaker 3 (44:46):
And that one stumbled his breaks a little bit there,
s Yeah, stumbled out was a great throw? Andy Stumbledou's
break a little bit.
Speaker 2 (44:52):
Wasn't a great throw? Rogers not thrilled with himself.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
No, shouldn't be on that.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
One, as we've seen that a couple of times.
Speaker 3 (44:58):
Couple of times right right the.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Last week or so, Beanie Bishop against Roman Wilson.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
Speed out and that was nice speed out.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Nice thereby on time and being able to wiggle free.
And as you've mentioned before, this is one of those
this is a drill that's it's designed for the past catcher.
More difficult, more difficult to defend than to attack.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
Keep it close if you're a corner exactly right, drop
them off the line, make them double clutch a little bit.
I mean you're playing man coverage year against versus.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
Air Brandon Johnson, Pierre and a nice grab to go
up and get that one. Good ball by Mason Rudolph
as well too, to drop that one in.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
Johnson does something decent every practice.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
You know, he's one of those you know, like I
think there's been a lot of attention pay you. You
were like laughing with me the other day. It was
like someone tweets us or ask us about Rock Taylor
every day.
Speaker 3 (45:44):
Yeah, no one mentions Johnson, mention.
Speaker 2 (45:47):
Mentions Brandon Johnson. Impressive, I think so too. And Brandon Johnson,
you know, was the third of your guy. So a
little NFL experience. Maybe it's starting to all come together
for him out here a little bit. As we can see,
you have some one on ones now, Will Howard gonna
step up to be the quarterback? Darryl Porter getting handsy there?
Break It might have been flagged in the course of
(46:08):
a game.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
Yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Yeah for him there, Yeah, a little physical with with
Lance McCutcheon. But hey, we don't, we don't. We don't
mind that always as this drill will continue here in
front of us. Matt, what do you say we get
to a break now? I think we'll get a new
period here in just a few minutes, maybe some more
exciting stuff to break.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
All the backs are heading to backs on backer land too.
Maybe we should get out of.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
Here while we can, Okay, you want to or should
we stay? Let's stay? Let's stay for a minute or
two here, because I think they're getting ready to go.
That's a good eye by you, mister Williamson. It does
look like we're gonna have a little backs on backers
in the corner of the end zone down here, Peyton
Wilson against Jalen Warren. To get us started, there's Patrick
Queen stepping in, Patrick stepping.
Speaker 3 (46:50):
In, All right, all right, here we go.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
Yeah, we're gonna have to stay with this for a
couple of year at least through at least through the
first couple of guys. It will be Peyton Wilson stand up,
Patrick Queen hyping them up. You got to that's the
only this is the this is the gladiator drill.
Speaker 3 (47:07):
Yeah, it's just on an island. Every eyeball on you. Yep.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
It'll be p Q and Jalen Warren, Eddie Faulkner giving
final instructions. All right, gentlemen, I don't want any rabbit punches,
no liver punches, clean fight. Let's get it on as
Patrick Queen goes for a little bit before finesse move
and Jalen Warren just slid right with He read that
perfectly the whole time.
Speaker 3 (47:27):
Really good lateral agility there too.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
It will be Kenneth game Well vers Peyton Wilson.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
Yep, Okay, there's kind of going down the depth chart there.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
What a nice swim move by paying Wilson.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
Yeah, well, if he grabbed cloth there or not, but
he looked like he was initially beaten and then gotten
the way.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
Enough good movement by these running backs Caleb Johnson against
Malik Harrison next and Harrison off test for Johnson swim
just right past them across.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
His face, it's not what you want to do.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
Then it's been finesse moves here from the from the
pass rusher so far.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
I bet he was expecting he was.
Speaker 2 (48:02):
Expecting him to, yeah, come come, you know, right through
the right through the center of his numbers there and
instead hit him with the hit him with the swim move.
Is he ever? This is gonna be a tough one
for Caleb Johnson? Hey or was that trace Sarmon Park Johnson?
Speaker 3 (48:17):
Now, yeah, they getting one sermon won that one.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
He totally did. Got pushed back slightly, but definitely held
his ground and recovery him off. Yeah, as we got
let's see here hold him against Evan Hall, I believe.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
I think so yeah, I would call that a draw.
Speaker 2 (48:36):
Yeah, as uh, let's see here. Up next is going
to be Devin Harper.
Speaker 3 (48:42):
Somebody keep an eye on.
Speaker 2 (48:43):
Absolutely, he's a little long.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
And angular for this drill. You can his his pad
level is gonna be a problem. And they blew that
one dead. I think they're gonna let him go again.
But he came off real high.
Speaker 2 (48:53):
He did. He's getting some instruction. Now we'll see how
he does here in another REPLICX. They're gonna calling Caleb
Johnson to go up against him. So let's see here Johnson,
it does a good job of that initial contact, keeping
his feet underneath him. And now he'll get some instruction
from from Eddie Faulkner as well. But that was a
better rep from Caleb Johnson.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
It was as far from perfect, but it was better.
Speaker 2 (49:18):
As uh is that Jalen Warren and Patrick quyn unless
they blew that one dead or what.
Speaker 3 (49:23):
But they both kind of like stopped half.
Speaker 2 (49:24):
Way stopped halfway through the rep. Let's see if maybe
they run that back or no, it's just gonna be
Peyton Wilson against Kenneth Gainwell here next man. That's a
good and I'll tell you what he's been practicing well
these last few days.
Speaker 3 (49:37):
Yeah, I mean he guess tell he's a professional.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt. Trey Sermon will step in
against Mark Robinson. Robinson tried to hit him with the
spin move picked up.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
Well there by Tray.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
Yeah, absolutely, I agree.
Speaker 3 (49:53):
Bent knees, keeping your ground, keeping your hands up, and
the you know, not getting too gravvy.
Speaker 2 (49:58):
Evan Hall checking in here. See if we'll stay a
couple more minutes, another minute or two maybe we'll get
another Caleb Johnson rep.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
As uh, that was kind of a nondescript on that.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
That was a yeah, a little slower there. Eddie Faulkner
talking about hand usage with some of the guys down
there as this will be a rep there between. Was
that colcm I believe, yep? And somebody else? Is that
Caleb J. Johnson?
Speaker 3 (50:26):
Yes, Okay, he's still a little sloppy with his technique,
but he fights now.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
He's getting in there against Harper and Harper just kind
of trying to spin move.
Speaker 3 (50:35):
Yeah, this is not Harper's finest moment. I'll be honest
with you, No, it's not. He's done some good things,
but I don't think he's got a lot of pass
rush background.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Apparently does does does not necessarily look like it, but
as are they going to move him around here and
keep this going.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
They're switching side, switching side, doing up the middle. They
came from the quarterbacks right now, they're coming from the
quarterbacks left. Sometimes you'll see tight ends and edge guys involved.
These are just the inside linebackers. No running back.
Speaker 2 (51:00):
Old Patrick Queen and Jalen Warning in good rep there
by jarn he is he is let's stay through uh,
maybe Gainwell and Caleb Johnson here, and then we'll get
to the break that we're that we're doing Peyton Wilson
against Gainwell. Gainwell has had a couple of solid reps here.
Let's see if he can keep that rolling. Man, he
gets wide, he moves well, his hands.
Speaker 3 (51:20):
On god powerful, but he's getting the most out of it.
He's gloating a little bit.
Speaker 2 (51:26):
Johnson, it says, yep, against Malie Harrison, and that's maybe
his best rep.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
So far on him.
Speaker 2 (51:32):
Pick him up.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
I would like to see Harrison try to go down
the middle of him.
Speaker 2 (51:35):
I would too, just a little physical physical pop. Yeah
as uh, yep, I think that's gonna be it. They're
gonna move to some of the depth guys here, So
let's get to this break. If anything crazy happens during
the break, we'll obviously tell you all about it. But
it looks like this period's almost over. We'll reset for
the second hour of the show when we return. On
the other side, Well Shooler and Matt Williamson. It's the
Drive here on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
