Speaker 2 (00:35):
Good afternoon, Steelers Nation, and welcome back to Campus Saint
Vincent College. Another sunny day here in Lake Trope, Pennsylvania,
as practice is underway in front of us on this
Wednesday afternoon, Westhuler and Matt Williamson with you for another
three hours A Long Drive, a special edition of the
Drive here on Steelers Nation Radio. You already know the
(00:55):
drill at this point in training camp. Heck, this is
a fourth practice from the end of this thing, so yeah,
by now it's moving quickly. I'm sure you've all got
the gist of this first two hours inch of the show.
Here will be practice, Matt and I will paint a
picture for you like we always do on Matt Another
(01:15):
important day here at Camp one, where, however, the guys
are back in their shells, in their helmets, no pads
here today at practice.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, it looks like a beautiful day, but there's a
little haze. I was just a little more worried about
the weather this year than usual.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
We gotta hit a little bitter in camp.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
We did.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I thought, I know, we got good word mostly from labs.
There's more doubt in than I am obviously that it
was gonna go padded, not padded not. But I kind
of thought maybe they would do padded today, take it
easy tomorrow going into the game. So oh well, but
I mean, I'm sure they'll still get a lot of
work done. They still do one on one stuff. I
(01:53):
guess the first thing we got to talk about, though,
is the Will Howard in.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Absolutely, yeah, absolutely, That's where I figured we would start today.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
As to bummer.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
You know, we yesterday when we when we were kind
of wrapping up the show, well, I guess maybe the
second hour in the practice portion of the show, we
shared with everybody how Will Howard had left practice early,
and how John new Smith as well had left practice early.
Good news on the John new front. He's back out there. Today, uh,
which is which is good to see. Yeah, he is.
He's he's over there right now kind of at the
(02:24):
at the front of that group, watching watching walkthroughs. He's
got his his equipment on and everything and looks like
he's ready to go and will be a full participant,
or at least a participant. I shouldn't speak on how
full that participation will be. But he's out there and
he's dressed, and he's he's been going through warm ups
and some of this walkthrough stuff so far.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
That's obviously promising, very.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Promising, yes, but not as encouraging, not as good a
news about will Howard. Reports coming out that he will
be missing about three weeks ish with a with an
injury on his throwing hand to one of his bones. There,
of course, Mike Tomlin Willson speak tomorrow Matt to kind
of in an official press conference capacity to uh to
(03:05):
talk about the Jaguars preseason game. So, who knows, maybe.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
We'll get abut practice scrub.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It will be your typical like three minute after practice scrum.
It'll be a you know, like the course of what
he typically does at a press conference during a game
week where he'll kind of lay out the opponent for
the for the press and then take questions. So it
could happen today after practice, could happen tomorrow. Who knows.
If we'll get an official word from the team. I'm
sure we will at some point, but it sounds like,
(03:31):
unfortunately for the rest of this training camp period, for
the preseason games where we were hoping to see so
much of him, that will Howard's gonna be on the
shelf here temporarily.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, And frankly, I I know that there's a lot
of optimism around this young man. I understand that he
just won the national title. I think he was more
valuable than a six round pick. But frankly, I look
at his future here as a really exciting back up
for next year's first round pick, you know, and maybe more,
(04:02):
who knows.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
I mean, but I mean, I'm not going.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
To write the whole story yet, but the short term
is what bothers me is. We've talked about this to
no end. We did a whole segment, actually like a
whole hour, just breaking down what kind of preseason usage
we expected from every position, and I thought quarterback was
one of the easiest ones to.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Do, where Rogers.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Little or none Rudolph does some, but yeah, and now
that might have to Yeah, maybe starts every game except
for Rogers' usage, you know whatever. And Thompson got basically
it's mop up duty. But the beauty of it was Howard,
who's shown some promise here and is young and all
(04:47):
those good things, was set up to do a lot
of preseason gap right right right, Maybe even some with one,
certainly a lot with two's against decent competition against three
different teams.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Now, we'll wait to see what.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Tomlin says tomorrow, but I think it's pretty safe to
say that he's not going to be in the.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Jags game at all.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
And my worry and hunch is he won't play a
preseason snap this year. Yeah, you know, and that worries you.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
You know it does were you maybe not so much
for like his immediate future here in.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Twenty Yeoh, I don't know the changes the twenty twenty
five because he's in one bit.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
You would need Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph to both
have injuries or major performance issues before you would have
seen Will Howard in a regular season game anyways.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
And I know people love him, but that probably would
not have gone well.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Correct, correct, no doubt, and listen, anybody who's a third
string quarterback is a rookie, it's probably not going to
go great for you. If you're the Ben Roethlisbergers of
the world, who you know, started as third stringers and
then ended up in the AFC Championship game there rookie
season or few and far between.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
He's also an early first round pick and absolutely absolutely
a little little different of a situation obviously, but the
that's the the biggest thing for me is just.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
This was the preseason where it felt like him to
get so much of that work. It really felt like
a time for him to develop because Matt, I mean,
you know, if you if like we all think, if
you go out and you draft a quarterback in the
first round next year, yeah, that guy's not gonna play
fifty percent of your preseason snaps, but you're gonna want
to get him some work, certainly as a as a rookie.
You know, you know, you might not have him play
(06:30):
in two quarters half the game every single game, but
you are obviously going to want to get him plenty
of in stadium work. What's that mean for Will Howard?
What's that mean for you? Know, the other quarterbacks on
the roster at that point, like this felt like the
preseason where he could really go out there, really get
an evaluation, a lot of snaps, a lot of reps,
and again comfort, comfort, and he will have opportunities like
(06:53):
that going forward, but not like this year. I don't
think where you have so clearly you have a veteran
number one, who.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Say you're very very veteran number one, very better at
number one.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Who was you know, on the eighteenth green of his
career and when he hits the clubhouse, is going to
walk right into the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Of course, you've got a probably doesn't want to play
at all in the preseason.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah, you've got a backup now who's been in the
league for a decade, you know, and has started a
handful of games from multiple organizations in the NFL level.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
And you know exactly there's no secrets about him, right,
He's been with the organization, you know what nine years
in his career.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I think for Mason, eight of those were here with
this organization. I know. Isn't that crazy? It's nuts to
think about like it is. It's it's a it's a
real it's a real missed opportunity for him out here
this year, because I don't think he's ever gonna have
as big of a piece of a pie as he
would have had this this summer.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Right, And you laid out the top two guys and
we know exactly who they are. But the folks out
there that think that this team doesn't have a plan
just aren't paying attention because this was all planned for
Howard to show as much as he possibly can. And
I know I'm harping on this a lot, but it's
gonna be one of the most integral things that happens.
(08:07):
And I don't know one hundred percent that it will,
but if they go get their quarterback in the first
round next year, the Howard experience here and in games
in the preseason is going to help that guy totally.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
You know what I mean, Like he's an a big brother. Yeah,
I always say exactly.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
I mean, grad Kowski and Leftwich were that guy. Those
guys are super valuable. Like you calling him the caddie
you know for Tiger, Go get Tiger next year, but
his caddy's already been around the block. And what's cool
about it is, no matter who that player is, assuming
I'm right, he's gonna be like, man, this guy won
the national title the year before.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
I was even like he knows who he is, Like
he watched them.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Whoever that player is it, Say it's Drew Aller played
against him at Penn State, and be like, man, that
guy whipped my team and took him to the national title,
and now he's going to be presumably my backup. That's great,
you know, Like I'm so comfortable that now. That doesn't
mean that whole plan's ruined. But there's a lot of
potential left on the table there, you know, just.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Because of absolutely there's there's a lot more juice left
the squeeze there that you that you might not see.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I wish he did it in practice in week two.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
You know what I mean, or even I mean even
in many camp it could have gotten could have gotten
himself back right for training camp. But you're right, if
this happens in the regular season, it's not as big
of a.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Not a couple days before the first preseason not a
couple of.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Days before the first preseason game, where you know, you
knew he was going to get a ton of work
done in in stadium at least against three other opponents.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
And be good and bad or whatever. I mean, I
don't care how would happened.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
It would make him a better player long term and
make the quarterback room stronger.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Long completely agree. And you know for that hypothetical scenario
that that a lot of people believe in. And I
know you you you've kind of jokeing about this, how
like if you say anything about Will Howard other than
how he's the next franchise quarterback, right you get you know,
boyd A couple people in your mentions.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Oh yeah, yeah, they're a little rough on you this
preseason those three games.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
I'm not saying I know his future, sure, sure, right,
I think he wasn't drafted in the sixth round to
be the next Ben Roethlisberger, though.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
I think I think you are correct on that one
as well too.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Well.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
While like we don't know what his ultimate ceiling is yet,
is a guy who's just getting going in his NFL career.
His chance to prove that ultimate ceiling, or to really
show that there was a high ceiling there potentially was
in these three preseason games, right, I mean, because like
if you go out and get your number one quarterback
next year, he's never gonna get that same kind of
(10:36):
look as he would have gotten here over the next month.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Yeah, I mean, I very much believe next year when
we report to latrob Be training camp, it'll be Rudolph
who's got one more year, and he may be your
opening gay starter that that's on purpose with Rudolph, he
could also he's probably gonna be your two four year
move on. Howard becomes your next Rudolph with two more deals,
(11:00):
hit two more years on his rookie deal as a
second year player. Maybe if he was awesome in these
three games or whatever, he's even ahead of Rudolph. Sure
that would be a home run, and that would be
hard to accomplish. And a first round player that you
probably traded up for. Now, all the attention on the
planet's going to be on that first round pick if
I'm right, and he's gonna need so many reps, I
(11:22):
mean more than Kenny God does a first round pick.
I mean no doubt, I mean, everything here is going
to be focused on him, rightfully so, And it doesn't
mean Rudolph's going to be an afterthought, But it's not
going to be the same situation of hey, put Will
Howard in the third series of the game against Jacksonville
and give us seventy five percent of snaps. It's gonna
(11:43):
be Hey, rook I want you to play a lot
and show what you can do and get all the
attention from the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, et cetera.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, no doubt, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
No doubt. And so that's that's kind of the sunken
costs or the sunken opportunity maybe of Will Howard.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
Just that's maybe it's a short term thing. We'll never
think about it in three years from.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Now, right, and hopefully he will think about now. He
ends up being a Charlie Batch type, you know, and
and we never really talk about that one summer that
he messed up his hand and had to miss a
couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
The guys I keep comparing him to are there's three guys, Kubiak,
They're all they all turned into very successful NFL coach
Frank Reich, Frank Reich and Jason Garrett. They backed up Aikman,
Elway and Kelly. Hopefully they draft one of those three
guys next year. And John Elway and his rookie year, well.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
I hope they don't draft Aikman, Elway or Kelly next ye,
because they're all pretty old now. But I get what
you're saying.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
You get what I'm saying, And a lot of Super
Bowl appearances and a lot of rings and Hall of
Famers end up and he ends up being their backup
forever and ever and ever. Now, Brady's a different story
because Brady got drafted. I'm just talking about like late
round success stories that super hit. Brady's different because Bledsoe
was the guy. There was never a challenge blah blah
blah blah blah. But Party and were different in that
(13:02):
they were healthy during camp and just kept getting better
and better. Oh, we're gonna have to bump these guys
up the depth chart.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
We're gonna bump these guys up to depth chart. And
preseason was really good to those dudes.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
We're gonna for those that believe that Howard might be
that lightning in a bottle, what should would be the
best thing ever? I mean, then use your first round
pick on whatever else you.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Trust me. Hope, folks, I hope that's the case.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
But those guys proved themselves now and in the preseason
to really start to put some faith in them.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
It's a great point by you, Dak Prescott. This was
the time of year where he started jumping onto everybody's screen.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
His he might right right there.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Bench Tony Romo for this guy, even somebody, even someone
like Russell Wilson who wasn't a Day three pick, but
wasn't a third round but he was a third round pick.
It started to happen. Matt Flynn right with Sham and
Matt Flynn and.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
I remember that vividly.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
They It sounds crazy at this point, but Flynn was
farves back up.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Yep makes a big money coming over.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Yeah, and they invested in him much like Seattle did. Darnold,
you know what I mean, Like there's a free agent addition.
Clearly he's our one. We'll see if he can keep
it up. Blah blah blah. But we're a drafted student
in the third round. It's too short. But had a
really good college career, and every step of the way,
Pete Carroll's like, we just keep putting more on Russell's plate,
(14:24):
and he's digesting it over and over and over, you know,
and before you know it, he's better.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Yep, had a great.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Career, and I you know, again, I don't think you
unheard of you and I certainly did not think that
Will Howard in the next month was gonna surplant Aaron Rodgers.
But no, it's also not unheard of for a rookie
quarterback to have a really strong preseason and start turning
some heads and start making it. It doesn't even have to
be the ultimate like Russell Wilson or Dak Prescott example.
(14:51):
You know, like there's there's there's lesser, lesser levels of
that as well too, but they just stick.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Around forever, right, exactly right, It's hard to stick around
us round pick, you know, quarterback for a decade.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
It's just yeah, it's just a bummer for him, it's
a bummer for the team, it's a bummer for everybody involved.
And again, like you said, hopefully he does end up
sticking around for a decade. And it's a footnote that
you know, a bunch of us don't even remember two.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Or three get hurt a rookie, And we talked about,
remember we were excited to see him in twenty Yeah,
exactly great.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
If we if we were all remint like, oh, remember
when we spent the whole opening of the show talking
about the missed opportunity for Will Howard, but it is
it's a it's an unfortunate storyline here at the at
the time that you didn't want.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
It, But somebody always benefits from these things. There's always
a next man up, and that's gonna be Skyler Thompson.
So Skyler Thompson was an afterthought a couple of weeks ago,
and we got here. I kind of liked them coming
out of college. He's flashed a little. He's not a
throwaway player. I don't think he's gonna be any kind
of answer, you know, but he's definitely gonna get more opportunity.
(15:52):
And frankly, he should be looking at it like I'm
gonna seize it, you know. And I wonder, and I
guess nothing'll probably happen the next twenty four hours. But
if this thing is a month or more, do you
call somebody? You add somebody else for the preseason, right right?
Because you know Rogers isn't gonna play.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Much, right Yeah? And I don't I don't know if
you want.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
You like four when you're here, I mean, if all
four get a lot of use.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
It sounds like Teddy Bridgewater just signed with the Bucks.
Huntley just signed with the Browns because they need more quarterbacks.
But you could probably find somebody of that ILK that's
been around that, but they probably.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
Don't want to come in and be a three either, correct,
you know, correct.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Plenty to keep an eye on, Plenty to think about,
Plenty to discuss as we get started here. No Alex
Highsmith again today out there, still dealing with that groin injury.
Does look like Cam and TJ are dressed. John new
Smith back to work after men missing the end of
yesterday's practice.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
I don't know that high Smith will see Saint Vincent
Grass again.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, I think you might be right on that one.
No Calvin Austin either today.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
Is that an injury they don't know about?
Speaker 2 (17:05):
He missed yesterday's practice as well too, right, Yeah, picked up,
got got banged up over the weekend and missed yesterday's
practice and today. So no Calvin Austin or Alex high
Smith out there, but good news. John new Smith back
in the fold today after leaving practice yesterday. Will be
the fourth straight missed practice for Calvin Anderson as well too.
Who is not so not Calvin Austin, Calvin Anderson, keep it,
(17:28):
keep it so no Calvin.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Anderson money, and so they had the bump the what
I'd always kill his name, the guard that now is
playing tackle, and Stephen Jones, Jones I always call him Davis.
For some of you, I knew that was wrong. I
don't want to say it, but I mean that opened
the door for Jones.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
Again.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
I think that's a bump up for Jones. But Anderson
and Cook are supposed to be your backup tackles, you know.
So again that's sort of a Will Howard situation too,
you know.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Yeah, yeah, so that's kind of the the scene center,
if you will, we will keep everybody. But he posted
and updated with practice as it gets rolling along here.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Today we just got a tweet. Will the Browns trade
picket back to the Steelers?
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Wouldn't that be wouldn't that be a storyline? Well, pickets,
That's one of the reasons why they had to The
Browns had to bring in Huntley because Pickett and Dylan
Gabriel are both out with hamstring or soft tissue or something.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
So the big headline is Sor Sanders is going to
start preseason week one, yep.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
And that's great and.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
I think every big, big opportunity for him.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
Absolutely every Brown wants to hear that headline. That's a
headline they wanted. And I'm not trying to rain on
the parade. Maybe he's the would have been the choice
no matter what. But Picket and Gabriel or both have
hamstrings and Flacco's done like hardly anything, so he's left right.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Yeah, Yeah, how's that gonna work for them? Is he
gonna play one hundred percent of the first preseason games.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
That they signed? Hunt?
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Good Lord? Oh yeah. I don't think Watson's gonna see
any preseason.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
I don't think ever play football again.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Yeah, exactly right. Hey, Cleveland's problem, not ours. We gotta
get to a break here. We got some stretching going
on in front of us, moving and shaking gonna be
happening here soon at practice, and we will paint the
picture for you as best as we can as we
roll along. West Shuler, Matt Williamson. It's a special edition
of the Drive here at Saint Vincent College High A
Top Chuck knowle Field, We're just getting started with you
(19:22):
for the next three hours here on Steelers Nation Radio
on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
I Heart Radios.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Live coverage out twenty twenty five Steelers training Camp. He's
presented by Fadex where Now meets Next, and also brought
to you by First National Bank, by Calucy Chevrolet, iron
Workers Union Number Three, by Easy Home Exteriors, by SMT Bank,
we Mac Select Realty, by Tom's Alliances, the Pittsburgh Steelers
(19:53):
Pro Shot by Always Saint Flagging and Traffic Control.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
And by US.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Steel Practice rocking and rolling in front of us here
just uh, well, I guess the penultimate practice of this week,
as the Steelers will also be here on campus tomorrow.
Then Friday, we're all going south to Jacksonville for the
Steelers preseason opener on Saturday. Uh and we do know
(20:19):
that Will Howard will not be a part of that
game unfortunately. On Saturday, fun drill going on across the
field from us as the offensive linemen are working on
their form tackling.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
You wouldn't think we said offensive lineman, not defensive offensive lineman.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
My hunches.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
This will be the one try, one chance in the
entire season that they do this drill. Why would offensive
lineman work on tackling, Well, there are turnovers, there.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Are interceptions and fumbles.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
They don't get much practice at it.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
So there is a big matt, you know, like a
gymnastics type bat, and they're holding up, you know, tackling
dummy type things, and these guys are running through it
and being coached how to tackle pretty much on the
run that are not don't bring down like you're a
punt return, you know, up on a pine.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
You're just trying to blast.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
Someone that caught a football is going the other way
and save a touchdown. If I'm those guys, this is like,
it's just like going the water park or something like.
This is so much different than kick sliding and a
hand placement and dealing with Cam Hayward.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
And I had to blast these things and just destroy
the man.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
You had to run full speed into this dummy, right,
take it out? Yeah? Uh, say them all.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
And I was shocked to see it, but I gess
it makes sense.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Yeah it does.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Yeah, me ten minutes all year about it, you.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
Know, totally, Yeah, but it does. It's one of those
things you don't think about until you know till a
defensive back is running, a linebacker is running the other way,
and someone's got to bring them down. Somebody's got to
tackle them as uh.
Speaker 4 (21:42):
At least see your body, do it once or twice.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Exactly right, get the feeling of it down and know
how to you know, put your shoulder into the into
the right spot and all those different things. It's funny, man.
I'll tell you what I would not want to be
tackled by Isaic say them all. That's a big human being.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
No. I was watching Frasier too.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
I mean, he's got that, he's got that wrestler launch exactly.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
It looks like he's diving at something right from like
a stand up two points stand.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Give him two points of the takedown there.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
But those are the linemen make tackles, you know.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
I mean they're hard to get around if you're a
little dB that just picked the ball off, you know,
and you don't want to get hit by those guys.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
One of my favorite statistics that gets regurgitated every once
in a while, and I'm sure we'll get mentioned when
he goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you know,
about three hundred and sixty days from now. Larry Fitzgerald,
with this, he has more tackles registered tackles in his
NFL career than he has drops.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
I know, it's amazing, it's amazing right.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
Now, great. He barely has any drops. That's what makes it,
you know, so easy. But think, I mean, he had
to make a handful of tackles throughout his career because
his interceptions and you're chasing or someone fumbles and you're
chasing the guy down. So hey, everyone's got to be
willing to uh to wrap up and take somebody.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Gets a lot more targets than he gets tackle tackle opportunities.
Of course, a great long career exactly so little known
fact and I think he just kind of did it
for fun. But there was he came out of Minnesota
High High School of Minnesota and had to do a
year at Valley Forge Military Academy. And during that year
I was with Pitt and he was basically not our
(23:15):
property yet, you know, so we're still recruiting him. But
we had advised him to go to Valley Forge and
that was a big spot and a lot of really
good players would go there and play. But I would
still watch his Valley Forge tape, you know, and he
was great. But even but in some of those games
he'd play like linebacker safety sometimes, I mean, just kind
of for fun. I think, you know, like I can
(23:36):
do this, you know, it's and make some tackles.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
You know. He was not afraid to stick his face
in there.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
And he almost blew up the James Harrison touchdown.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
He did. You know, if he would have had about
five more yards, I would have made the tackle. Yeah,
maybe even two more yards and he might have made
the tackle. But yeah, that's funny. And hey, that stuff
comes in handy, you know, right.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
You can't just not know what to do.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
It's all part of a well rounded skill set, right,
you know. And it's it's that same kind of like.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Like your house catches on fire, you can't just lay
there and die, you know, like you gotta have some
kind of playing, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
You didn't play on it happening, but you gotta at
least respond.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
It catches on fire. You still gotta pay Pauli.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
You got that right light.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
You still got to pay Paulie.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Right, that's not how the play is supposed to go.
But it doesn't mean you have to can't just you know,
adjust on.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
The fly exactly right, exactly, you got the back to
do an no line stuff.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
You gotta be ready for anything, right that he who failed?
What's the like the he who uh fails to prepare,
prepares to fail.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yeah, exactly right, right, right, right is the is the
old adage, so be a boy scout or whatever.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Yeah, hey, they spent five minutes on it, and then there.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
They all got two hits in.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
They all got two hits in on the sled and
then on the tackling dummy, and then they're right back
to the.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
Benton and Cam Hayward are worried about their jobs anytime
soon with these guys taking over.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
But at least they did it. And I'm sure they
had fun.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
No doubt. And maybe that's part of it too. You know,
like you're you're coming down the home stretch of camp,
everyone's a little beat up. Yea, another hot day out here.
Let's let these guys start with five minutes of enthusiasm
and you know, and that might sound to some people
like youth football stuff, but it's not like these guys.
I don't care, man, I don't care how much you
love your jobs.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
Guys. You know, yeah, I don't.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Care how much you love your job. There's still times
that it feels like work. That that adage of if
you do something that you love, it'll never feel like work.
I understand mostly.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
True, and that's my life to a t.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Don't get me here, But there's still times that it
feels like work, you know, and.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
I'm dragging today, I don't feel well, or when we have.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
To do shows on Christmas or when we have to
do it, you know what I mean. That definitely feels
like work, no doubt. And so for these guys, as
much as they love it, as much as they are,
you know, grown adults getting paid a lot of money
to play a kid's game, it's it's still fun to
mix in, mix in that kind of stuff and lighten
up the mood from time to time.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
And we've done a lot of play by play practice,
so who was last week or two?
Speaker 4 (25:59):
Excuse me?
Speaker 3 (26:00):
And some of the O line stuff, sometimes they're just
standing around talking and by them by standing around, it's
not like they're just not doing anything there, right, they're
not loitering or taking a nap. But I mean there
are times during the course with two and a half
hour practice where they're not really doing physical O line
stuff on purpose.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
So why not tackle somebody? You know?
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Totally yeah, and that that makes a lot of sense
too when you put it that way. Uh, tight ends
going through some receiving drills in front of US quarterbacks
working on some footwork. You got the running backs far
side of the field running the gauntlet, working on all
the different uh you know, gauntlet style of things that
they do over there with ball security and blocking and
(26:41):
all those different things.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
I see it in the third field used. Yeah, defensive
something going too far away from Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
There's something going on over there with the defensive backs.
I think I.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
Like that is DB's Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Yeah, I was gonna say, haven't seen uh, I haven't
seen Jalen Ramsey out here yet.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
But oh, okay, but keep an eye out.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
But they are very away. I was looking for him.
I was looking for him during stretches. Uh.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
And and did you mentioned you did not see Harmon
yet either?
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Have not seen Harmon yet either? Yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
Far away.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
And again the defense is yeah, I mean one hundred
and twenty one hundred and fifty yards away from us,
down all the way on the other side of the valley.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Here, the big guys on defense look like they're doing
these bag drills.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
Yeah, doing some just kind of change the direction, change the.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
Direction and flipping hips and getting through some some cones
and then.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Some different kind of stuff today.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Yeah, exactly. We just mentioned the old lines doing some
different stuff. The D line's doing some different stuff too.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
It's that time of camp.
Speaker 4 (27:38):
Yeah, a little you know.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Running backs are coming over here to Aaron Rodgers has
a handshake with all these running backs that he was
just doing with the running backs as they come over.
It's kind of like the uh, the Maverick and Goose,
like I got the need for speed a little were missing,
they missing, and then get back on the on the
other side.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
The running back. I think that's new. He came up
with it.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
This is a really cool right, these forty year olds,
they really know what they're as h Rogers and Jalen
Warren working on some exchange stuff. But yeah, I'll be
interested when they get back over here, which should be
soon here. I believe we'll have team period coming up
in about five ten minutes, and when that happens, we
should get a better look at everybody who's here in
(28:25):
front of us. Who is harmon Yeah, not only you know,
not only who's getting a veteran's day. Maybe who's out
here but isn't a full participant, Like we'll be interested
to see how much John new Smith does, uh, he's
got his full get up on and everything. But he
did leave practice early yesterday, so worth keeping an eye on.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Ramsey didn't practice yesterday.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Ramsey did not practice yesterday. Yes, So that again, all
of these, all of these things that we will continue
to try and discuss and paint the picture for you
as practice goes along.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
And I think it's pretty clear that tomorrow is going
to be a physical added practice. Yes, maybe they do
keep it light on the Ramseys and Harmon's and some
of these guys you know one.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Hundred percent, you know, one hundred percent, and as you've
always mentioned, opportunity to get you know, evaluations and looks
at maybe some other guys in different roles, in different
spots and elevated roles. So that's never a bad thing.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
I have a bunch of corners. Yesterday they got more
and more opportunities.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Yes, there were, and I I with not seeing Ramsey
so far, not seeing Darius Slagh so far either, Now
again that's we will, we will, we'll follow up on
that his practice rolls along here. Yeah, but looks like
there's gonna be a lot of opportunities for the uh,
you know, the end. And we know Corey Trice Junior
is still out as well too, as is Dante Kent.
(29:40):
You know, so a lot of opportunity for the Pierre's
and the Echols and the Beanie Pictures. Yeah Porters as
well too, who was back in the mix yesterday after
after missing a couple of practices with that thumb injury,
with that finger injury. So plenty to uh to bring
you playing Daryl Porter well too, Yeah, yeah that I
And Hey, everybody has got an opportunity out here today,
(30:03):
I think especially in that secondary group though, where it
looks like we might have some veterans days on deck.
But again we'll follow up on on all of that
in the next segment when everybody gets closer here on
the near field.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
I also think it's noteworthy that Rogers has only missed
one practice. Yeah, I mean he's been out there grinding
want everybody else, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Yeah, and he's he spoke I believe it was the
Joe Rudder of the trip earlier today, and Uh said
that he's willing to be a preseason participant Saturday in
Jacksonville as much or as little as Mike Tomlin wants him.
If he said, you know, if coach wants me to play.
I'll play If he doesn't, I won't, he said, you know,
I realize that plans might change now and in the
(30:39):
absence of Bill Howard, so hey, we'll wait and see
as uh as there's a lot to uh, a lot
to discover out here in the next two hours or so,
Matt and we will uh we will continue to do
that as we roll along here at practice. Going to
take a break now, hopefully we'll get some team period,
maybe some seven shots and some exciting stuff happening in
front of us in just a few minutes. It's a
(31:00):
special edition to Drive here live at St. Vincent College,
all part of our ongoing twenty twenty five training camp coverage.
Wes Uler Matt Williamson with you here on Steelers Nation
Radio on the Steelers Audio.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Network Iheartradios live coverage of twenty twenty five Steelers training Camp.
He's presented by Vadex where Now meets Next and also
brought to you by First National Bank, by Kalucy, Chevrolet,
iron Workers Union Number three by DZ Home Exteriors by
(31:32):
SNT Bank, we Max Select Realty by Tom's Appliances, the
Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop by Always safe flagging and traffic
control and by us.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Steel rolling along here at practice on this Wednesday afternoon
for your Pittsburgh Steelers, as we've got a few more
minutes of this individual period in front of us before
we should have some congregation or some team period. Although
to be fair, so far, look like the script is
(32:03):
a little bit different today, Matt. So, yeah, maybe I
shouldn't assume based on what we've seen so far to
this point.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
Ye, this could be a change up type practice, you
know who knows.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
It certainly could as we see Aaron Rodgers and Mason
Rudolph throwing and warming up with some wide receivers and
some tight ends and man, Matt, I know we've mentioned
this a couple of times, but feels like Pat Fryermouth
is having himself a real strong camp out here. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
I really like the way he's moving in control, running
with power. Even if he's not like breaking tackles, we
can see a powerful stride, very loose hips. I mean,
I think he's getting better and better, and there's been
some frustrating moments of his career and sometimes I didn't
always understand the usage. And I'm sure a lot of
people listening agree that, hey, they gonna feature him more,
(32:47):
and I think there's a strong argument for that, and
maybe we're gonna see it. I know that there's a
lot of tight ends around and Metcalf's gonna lead the league,
the team and targets, I'm sure. But we were talking
off the air. Looks like they're gonna about to do
seven shots shots I won't do well want it too much,
but I've brought this up a lot over the last
couple of years that there's a lot of data in
the league that tight ends really start to hit their
(33:09):
stride at age twenty seven, give or take.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
And that's about where he's hitting, you know.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
I mean, it's it's a complex position early, you know,
career tight ends rarely like the league on fire, like
a brock Bowers, and it's much more.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
That's why we react like, that's why it was so
crazy for right.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
So I think people can write tight ends off too
early in their career or he is what he is,
because a lot of those guys are a little bit
of a slow burn, and the really good ones last forever,
the heath Miller's and Kelsey and you know, Witten, and
they can't run anymore. Ye, Tony Gonzalez and Gates and
(33:48):
the Heath Miller is a great example. Is they fade
away slow once they kind of learned the tricks of
the trade.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
They do. And I have some Heath Miller numbers to
back that up for your your uh roaching point here, Yes,
if you will, but why don't you say we get
to that?
Speaker 4 (34:03):
Yeah, it looks like good stuff about seven.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Shots getting ready to happen here, simple concept, folks. It's
like a two point conversion for the offense. Seven different
two yard line, two yard line? How many times can
they score? How many times can the defense stop them?
Speaker 4 (34:17):
And seven opportunities? Thus seven show looks like no.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
Kean U Benton looks like no. Darius Slagh looks like no.
Jalen Ramsey here.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
Today, Benton's there. You're being Harmon?
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Sorry, yeah, thank you, sorry, thank you for correcting me.
Derek Harmon uh t J Watt is out there for this.
Cam Hayward dressed in here today, but not.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
Participate seven shots this year?
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Not this year? Is Aaron Rodgers quickly and the first
wrap findes dk Metcalf over the back of the end zone,
streaking line. And that's what we like to see that's
a lot of that embrace.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
And stuff that. Yeah, I think we're.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
Gonna see from him this year. And so the offense
like they did yesterday, jumps out to an early lead here.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
Yep. Absolutely, that was well earned exactly the way they
drew it up.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Looks like Metcalf will stay in.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
He's a hard guy to keep with when he's running
in a straight line, albeit parallel line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
In that situation, he sure is.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
It'll be Metcalan well now out there, yep. With the
trio of tight ends, Mouth, John Hu, and Washington to
the left, John who in motion, Rogers looking that way,
well covered, and Rogers just finally able to get Riddle
one towards Darnel Washington in the back of the end zone,
but well covered by the secondary and some good pressure
(35:31):
applied there by the defensive line.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
I like the offensive strategy, though they put Metcalf to
one side. As you mentioned, the three tight ends all
detached to the left. Defense just was the better unit
on that situation. But that's a hard thing to deal with.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
That's a lot of size to the receiver positions.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Oh absolutely, and that's great. Ooth and John Hu and
dk those are some big bodies in there, for sure.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Put those guys are near the goal line.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
And Wilson will check back in, as will Caleb Johnson
checks in. Now Aaron Rodgers in the shotgun with Johnson
to his left, pointing, barking out some signals. Now he
takes a snap, looking right quickly through. Okay, metcalf and
he had him y open. But why ye ye, Black
got his hand on that.
Speaker 4 (36:15):
One exactly the way he designed it. He pulled the
trigger at the right time. Just big fellas batted it down.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
Tell you what, that defensive line, they've got a knack
for doing that.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
That's for sure the most in the league last year
passes defense at the line of scrimmage, and they were
second to the Chiefs the year before. I know, me
and Hayward's the top of the league all the time,
the best at it. Dude, Why you Black might fit
in quite well, I think.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
So.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
It's a huge pause of his second or third time
we've seen him do that. And you got to give
Carl donbar some credit for that too. He must be
coaching them how to, you know, to work on that
stuff because it's not an accident.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Absolutely, a second team offense checks in Mason Rudolph now
in the gun with Tray Sermon to his left. Rudolph
and McCallum communicate, get on the same page, and they'll
bring Max Hurlaman in motion from right now.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
To get more and more attention.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
He sure is snap his back thrown to the end
zone for Robert Woods and broke it up nicely by Beanie.
Bishop got a hand on that one.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Yeah, I say, everything kind of looked good there. That
was a well placed ball. He had a step at
most on him. He tried to just drop it in
there and that's where the ball should have gone. But
Bishop was you know, sometimes you have a million dollar
shot and the goalie's got one million and one in
his pocket, you know whatever.
Speaker 4 (37:21):
The Mike Lang is them I forget.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
Yeah, that's exactly right. It's good play by Beanie to
close and break that one up at the last second,
intended for Robert Woods. And so after the offense drew
first blood three straight for the defense, let's see if
the offense could claw back into the right side. Here
a lot of beef as John new Smith and Darnell
(37:43):
Washington checking.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
In Pearlman's in the backfield and he can get carries too.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
He sure can, but it's going to be a pass
to Robert Woods. Nice slant route. Confuse the defense there,
and the offense does finally punch back.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
A little bit of play action, freeze that linebacker for
a little and afte where he should.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
To drop absolutely and now it looks Rudolph. It was
well done by Rudolph. It looks like Skylar Thompson going
to check into the game at quarterback.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
What's the score here?
Speaker 2 (38:10):
I would say three.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
Two, Okay, I think this is a six one.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
That's what I'm thinking, But I'm going to my knowledge.
Three to two for the defense is how I would
score it. So far, Thompson in the shotgun brings JJ
gallbreath in motion from left to right, and did someone
move on the offensive line? The defense is pointing yeah,
and they're gonna let them. They're gonna let them play
(38:34):
it out anyways. This one will be a handoff right
up the gut and that Yeah, that's a score. But
that's difficult as well too. It's not defense the running
back when there's no pads and no.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
Tackling, Like I have mixed feelings on that, Like in
a way, it feels like it's cheating. But if you
don't do it, then they know you're gonna throw every
time to.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Point. Uh So it looks like we're tied at three
a p and they're going to bring the ones back
in to decide this thing. Matt, little drama here, but maybe.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
That's what Tom wanted, was get seven.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
You know, let's tie this up. Let's keep them a
little honest. Yeah, that's a that's a good point by you.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
There's no real right way to handle that. Like, we're
not fully padded. It's a tough goal line run. But
of course you're going to get in you.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Unless your offensive lineman fall on their keyster right right,
So final rep here maybe for the wagu steak and
the lobster and the shrimp in the dining hall tonight,
we shall see Aaron Rodgers with Kenneth Gainwell to his right.
He's got Metcalf to his right as well, trio of
wide receivers as the left. Gainwell in motion looking that
way back from the middle. Touchdown, well drawn up, well protected.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
Yeah, and another in breaker for Metcalf right in the middle
of the end zone there.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
And the offense able to after falling behind three to one,
able to get three straight reps there and claim.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
To win a couple of practices in a row where
they're not getting pushed around anym They are holding her
own just like we'd wanted.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Yes, I completely agree. Yeah, and uh, that's encouraging to see.
Yesterday I thought was a very nice move in that direction. Today, Yes, today,
a little bit of a little bit of the same.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
I think this is gonna be like that pseudo tackling drill.
I was just I always enjoy these.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
I think they're good.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
I do as well too, And I was I was
gonna say, I was thinking about getting back into some
of that tight end stuff here. But we can hold
on to that for just a minute, because this is
gonna be. We're gonna have right in front of us
running backs and tight ends and.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Looks like receivers receivers.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Yeah, against defensive backs. And basically Matt's laid this out before.
But you've got what, Matt, five ten yards of space
between the sideline.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Yeah, they put cones con in from the numbers, in
from the number, so you don't have you don't have
the numbers to the sidelines.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
It's more narrow than that, and yards of space. Yeah,
and they won't tackle to the ground.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
But Queen and Warren here.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
Queen did a nice job and you got it.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
So is the defender. You got to break down. You
got to stay in front of your man whereas you know.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
The game ground as quick as possible, but not be
too aggressive to get a field if you're the ball carrier.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
That wasn't great.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
That wasn't great there by Malik Harrison.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
Now he got a little too ahead of him.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
So little too little, too quick on that one. And
if you're the ball carrier, you've got, you know, to
take missing a phone booth. Basically, that was nice, good
rep there by Evan Hall.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
Yeah, yeah he did at full speed. He didn't He
didn't chop his feet at all. He just got what
he could using lots smooth there too.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
A big big fellow.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Yeah, that big frame of his man.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
He's he can do some things after the catch, he
sure can.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
He's bottom half is like tree trumps. Yeah, unbelievable. Uh.
Caleb Johnson there with some nifty footwork.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
A rapid fire drillers getting a lot of stuff.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Is that Cam Heyward on the far side pushing a
sledge with one of the equipment managers sitting on.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
Yeah, I think so. He kind of does his own thing.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
He does. It's working out for him so far to the.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
Keep doing what you're doing.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
When the Germans bomb Pearl Harbor, let him go, let
him go. He's rolling. Is a dk metcalf there trying
to kind of clark a little bit? Yeah, and there's
some Hey, there's some bumping in these drills. Oh yeah,
there's no collisions, there's no tackling or anything like that,
but there's there's some some bumping and some collisions for sure.
Speaker 4 (42:13):
As uh that defensive player that's a.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Defensive player who caught the ball there, yes, against against
uh Juan Thornhill, now Beanie Bishop and Roman Wilson. Uh.
But yeah, it's it's just fun to see these guys
move in open space.
Speaker 4 (42:27):
And yeah it is.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
Which defenders can can you know, hit that trigger and
quickly get downhill? Which ball carriers can kind of open
up their hips and and and do a little shimmy
shake and free himself up some space.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
I would say it's more for the defense and the offense,
but yeah, how quickly can you get to a spot
where you're in control? Knees bent in a tackling position
and either slow them up to the cavalry arrives or
put them on the ground by yourself, you know, an
open field. Yeah, absolutely, that was nice there by thirteen.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
It was Scotty Miller Man he moves well as eighty.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
Seven's all right to J. J.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
Gall breath. Yeah, I mean he's one of the guys
I want to watch Saturday and be in the season
because we know that it's a pretty established tight end
room for the Steelers. But he's a he's a unique type,
and I don't know.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
He made a real nice catch over his head and
head earlier to day, you know, nice extension and body control.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
Andatdy Miller once again he can Miller can he can
spin these guys around.
Speaker 4 (43:25):
That's pretty nice by Washington washing l and.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
The crowd goes wild as Washington kind of hits the
burners there at the end.
Speaker 3 (43:32):
Not gonna be le specialty obviously, Yeah, exactly right. I
mean that was something by Washington though considering nine out
of ten times he's trying going to run.
Speaker 2 (43:40):
He's probably going to run right through the center of
your chest. Yeah, gain well with a little little shimmy
shake there.
Speaker 4 (43:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:47):
Connor Hayward carrying the ball.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Hayward's alright at this too.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
Yeah, yeah, I know he is. He's he's got that
kind of low center of.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
The gravity at tackling chronic going up against I guess
he's a gunner.
Speaker 4 (43:58):
You know that's a good offensive player.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
Yeah he has that Rock Taylor maybe not sure, but yeah,
going up against Trey Sermon there. But yeah, hey, you
gotta get the you gotta get the special teams guys,
some experience.
Speaker 4 (44:10):
Yeah. Yeah, it's close to tackling drills.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
You're gonna get exactly right, exactly right, especially in this
day is Danny Smith comes over and is offering his
uh his words of encouragement to all these guys, and
uh yeah, offensive line looks like they're working on some.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
Was Brandon Johnson was went to double check because maybe
they have gunner intentions for him once in the Saturday game.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
You know, someone's got to do it right, Ye's got
to prove that they can do it. Offensive lineman looks
like they're working on some some zone blocking.
Speaker 4 (44:41):
Comment offensive player coming up here as it's.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Gain well playing defense, Yeah, Rod would wrap him up.
Well there, Maybe.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
He's gonna be a kickoff coverage. I'm just or maybe
he's volunteered. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Maybe Beanie and DK metcalf. That's a sizable difference.
Speaker 4 (44:58):
Yeah, I think K would have taken a differ.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
To dance them if that was because as the Beanie
goes over and gives Danny Smith a hug and says, listen,
don't put.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
Me up against and nobody really wants to what are
we trying to do here?
Speaker 4 (45:11):
Imagine when they did. It's like with Jerome, Oh, that
would have been, you'd rather do it here than live.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
You would absolutely rather on a day where it's just helmets.
Speaker 4 (45:20):
And shells, basically two hands, exactly.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
Right, exactly right, Matt, Let's get it's a good drill.
Though it is good drill. Let's get to our.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
First day flip side, so now you'll be running the
opposite side. The sideline will be your right as opposed
to your left, your ball carrier.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Let's uh, let's get to our final break here the
first hour, we'll continue to describe practice for you. I
also want to get into some of that those tight
end numbers and kind of uh peak of their career
stuff that Matt was discussing a little bit there with
Pat Fryer, Mouf and Heath Miller. I got some numbers
to beat on the tackle on DK Metcalf chasing down
Connor hey Way.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
This is offensive tackle day. Offensive players learning how to
deal with interception day.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
You know, hopefully we won't have to do that very
often season.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
They throw zero that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Don't have a fumble recovery. You know.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
Hour in the books, two more hours to go. Here
on this special edition of The Drive, will continue to
paint the picture for you of everything going on here
at Chuck Nollfield on the campus of Saint Vincent College.
It's another training camp day. Coverage ongoing here on Steelers
Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
