the Drive here on the Steelers Audio Network. I am
Dale LOLLI he is the Matt Williamson. And we're doing
some ex Twitter questions here today. We got a ton
of them flooded. We were going to do a fantasy
football segment here, but because there are so many questions,

Not all super football related either, which is fine.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Bird Ball asks. Have the Steelers ever carried four running
backs on a roster going into the season? Could Cordero
Patterson be used more as a wide receiver this year
unless as a running back? Love the drive. Yes, they've
carried I thought so. They've carried four running backs multiple
times over the years.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Not three in a fullback either, right, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Four running There were times would be four running backs
and a fullback.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, okay in the day man say back.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, teams too, they're more run oriented, those guys.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
From what I remember, even like eighties nineties, it was
rare for a team to keep six receivers. Yeah, I
mean there wasn't as much, nearly as much eleven person Yeah,
Rocky and Franco were on the field together a high percentage.
I mean, so I don't think it's uncomm Now, it's uncommon,
but in recent and Steeler history over the decades, it's

not uncommon.

Yeah.

Yeah, in terms of the cord Aero Patterson stuff. As
a wide receiver, here's a guy to keep an eye on.
In regards to that, they signed Max Hurlman out of
uh Notre Dame, Okay, and he listed as a receiver

undrafted guy. He's listed his running back number number thirty
four at the mini camp or training you know, the OTAs.
But they lined him up in the slot quite a bit. Really,
they used him as a weapon, and he's got some
of that ability to do those things.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
I think they and Arthur Smith have kind of looked
for that guy. You know, Patterson has made his career
out of that. You know, is the receiver, is he
running back?

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Is he neither? Is he both?

Speaker 3 (02:29):
You know, I think there is value to that. So
you think Hurlman or someone like him could get carries
and run receiver routes. Yeah, okay, I mean if he
makes a team, that's going to be a big reason
why or you know, or if they have a guy
like that in the future. Frankly, I don't know what
the story is with Patterson at the moment, to be

frank I thought months ago he'd probably be let go
just because of his contract situation. They haven't needed the money.
That hasn't happened. I don't know what is what the
plan is? There not a clue?

Yeah, they still have that Again, a lot of times,
the Steelers don't make a move until they have to
make a movie.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah. Yeah, and they haven't had to right And Frankly,
if they signed Watt in the next five minutes, that's
not They're not gonna need the cap space this year
to do that.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
He's an open caps yeah problem. Patterson does give them
a little different look in terms of what he brings
to the table as opposed to say, Kenneth game Will.
He's a much bigger body, much bigger body.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
You see him in person, you're kind of shocked, especially
if you only just kind of know his history, Like
if you go watch his highlight tape of University of Tennessee,
as a first round pick. It's unbelievably dynamics. One of
the best highlight tapes you'll ever see. Position was always
a question coming out, and he ran a weird routree there.
But when he became a Steeler and I saw him

in person, I didn't expect I knew it was big,
but I didn't expect him to be that big. I
mean he is a strapping fellaw.

Yeah, he's a big dude.

So he's a lot different than gain Well just physically. Yeah.

Ben Cohen asked, could you compare the two thousand and
three roster to the twenty twenty twenty twenty five roster
in terms of the nest What did Ben Landon compared
to the twenty twenty six quarterback?

I don't know that You're so much better with this
kind of history than me too. Would you'd have to
refresh me?

Speaker 1 (04:26):
I know, it's like I'm going back to call up
to twenty. Yeah, the three roster now, so.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
I mean Bettis was in place, you had. Bettis was
a run first team it was you.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Also had on that offense ahead of what a true
fullback in Dankrider, Okay, Plexico burs Hines Ward were two
starting receivers.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
That's pretty good, right.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Jeremy Toman was your starting tight end. Your offensive line.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Was Randal l on that team as a third receiver.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Uh not yet, Okay, you had Fanica, Keedrick Vincent, Jeff
Harding's Kendall Simmons. Right tackle was Oliver Ross.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
So my impressions not great, but your interior, I would
say guard guard had to be as good as a
in the league. Yeah, tackles had to be at the
bottom of the bottom of.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Now, remember in three Fanica played a lot of left tackle,
not by design, but had to. Okay, you get the
best five on the field, Yeah, which.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
He probably still was better than their left tackles, but
then you're compromised at two spots. So this has been
true basically through Steeler history. But even then there was
a shortage in the league of true offensive tackles. Yeah,
and maybe not even a shortage as much as there
is now. But all the great ones go quick, you know,
like the Hall of Fame tackles of that era, Ogden,

Walter Jones, Bisselli Pace. They're all like top five picks
and they hardly ever busted. Well Seeos never picked in
the top five. You know, so you get Fanica or
Simmons in the first round because they're guards, right, and
you know the line was constructed different. You also were
a heavy interior run team from what I mean obviously
with Jerome, but I think if I'm sure the percentages

bear that out as well, it's a pretty good nest.

Pretty good nest.

I mean you got three big time skill guys and
three big time linemen basically.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, you also had on that team, not just Bettest
and a defense obviously they had a defensive place too. Yeah,
you also had guys. Your other running backs were Amos Away,
Ron Haynes, we were both. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Yeah, Capable was a change of pace, dynamic guy there
for a while.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
You rather will Randa Well was on the three team. Okay,
so you had Ward.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
That had to be one of the best receiver rooms
in the league. Yeah, and one of the best running
back rooms in the league.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Now, the other guy is Lee May's Chris Doring. We're
just guys, yeah, but that's true. If you look pull
up any year, who's your fourth and fifth receiver. Yeah,
Marvel Smith was on that team, but was hurt a
lot of that year. When you know, Fourward came around.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
He's back, okay, and he was a high end tackle. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
He was one of their best tackles of that generation.
For sure. Hardings was one of the best centers. He
absolutely was. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
It's funny how he's not remembered that way because he's
not dirt or Webby. Yeah, you know, but he was
a top five.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Guy defensively though.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
This is where maybe the des as good as I remember.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Chemo Von o'hoffen. Yeah, okay, Jason
Gilden and Joey Porter. Is your outside backers, James Ferrier,
Kendrell Bell is your inside backers.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
Oh, that's a great front seven.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Chad Scott Dwayne Washington were the two outside cornerbacks. Would
you say that's an average pairing? Yeah for the time. Okay.
Troy Polamalo was a rookie and O. Three didn't really
start until.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Four, so he was drafted the year before Ben.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
The safeties and No. Three were Mike Logan and Brent Alexander.
The safeties became Troy Polamalo and Chris Hope.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah quickly, Yeah, gotcha.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
I mean it was a really solid defense.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
So as was the case or a lot of that era.
Front seven is as good as any in the league
and really hard to run against. And you got edge
pass rushers secondary. Their corners were kind of like their tackles.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
That's what it's kind of the way Dick Lebow wanted it.
Dick Cleobo won in big cornerbacks that can tackle, who
could just come up and tackle the catch.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
And they almost took one. If you go back and
look at their history back then, they consistently took one
in like the fourth or fifth round. And you hit
on an ike tailor you miss on a bunch.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
But so what Scott was one?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
He was a one. Yeah, And there's some d On
figures and there's some ones in there, but not as
much as most teams because they didn't ask a.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Ton of them.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
You know. Like I remember being on the radio when
I was early to the radio, I would say things like, well,
there's a salary cap. Every team cuts corner somewhere somewhere.
The Steelers cut corner a corner, you know, And they.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Kind of did back then because they had such a
pass run pass rush. Yeah, And frankly, that's why you're
going to stop the run.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
You're gonna stop the run, get them in third and
long Blitzburg. All that stuff was a different way of
playing defense. Now, like every defense, there's a slight weakness
to it as well. The nickel and dimers, the Brady's
and Mannings could pick on those corners, get them out quick.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
You know.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
You couldn't come down and play press man like Champ
Bailey at the time or anything like that. But you
have to cut corner somewhere.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
No, it was.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
It's a pretty good nest on all day.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
It's pretty good nest in terms of how it compares
what they have now. I don't want to say the
defense is comparable, but he is. Yeah, I mean, especially
pre Troy, it's pretty comparable. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
I mean I think being top five for either one
of those defenses should be in the cards or very
possible without a doubt. Yeah. And defense has changed so
much too. Defending the runs not as important. Yeah, but
Hampton and Ferrier and I mean, no one's romped the
middle of that group. So is Keesel not there yet?

Keesl was uh, I.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Mean he was a six round pick, so I mean
he may not have.

Yeah, Keesel was not there yet.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Okay, I know Van Olhoffen played a little nose here
and there too, kind of like a band.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
When he first start, when he first signed from from Cincinnati,
he was a nose for a year and then they
drafted Hampton, and they drafted Hamton realized he wasn't Joel
Steed or Hampton you know, different, he'd be a nose
probably on this defense. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Times have change.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Yeah, that's a really good nest though. He had eight
sacks and three wow. Okay, so he could rush the passer, slayed.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
A defense in a running game. Oh, by the way,
they had two really good receivers too.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah. Now I think you're building the offensive line. I'll
take that nest over this to be Yeah, hopefully with
that offensive line and again that offensive Keeger Vincent and
Oliver Ross. Yeah, started a bunch of games that year
and tight ends very average. I don't know that you
you don't have a keycher no offense to those two guys, Kecher,

Vincent or Oliver Ross. I don't believe you have one
of those guys starting on this line right.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Fortunately for the Steelers, they were able to draft two
tackles in the middle of the first round, not those
you know, the tackle conversations had about them and I
don't know any of them are gonna be og dinner Biselli.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Rarx Smith was a two.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, that was a high pick for them at the time.
But to answer the question, Ben went to a really
good nest. Yeah, a very good nest, very good net. Yeah,
established coach, you know all that stuff too, and didn't
ask a ton of them in year one either. Yeah,
but I think this one's trending the right direction in
that direction. Yeah, I would love to see first and Ward.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
Yeah, you're probably as we sit here, you're still a
receiver short, but you better tight.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
End, better tight end. Yeah, the line is more upside.
But Alan Fan is the whole fame.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Harding's wasp. He was a Pro Bowl player.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
Him and Fraser might be a wash. Yeah. Okay, it's
a pretty good group. Jerome is no slouch.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
J Marsh says, glad you guys are back at it.
Question is what type of target do you want player
wise to catch? A position player that can get open,
a tall, go get it guy, or almost an almost
slot who can play outside that is shifty but not
so much a positional down player.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
He's asking like, what type of wide out they could pursue. Yeah,
I think number two, because I definitely think Austin is
a slot that can play outside. I think Wilson's almost
I don't know. I don't know how much outside. I
need to see it first from him, but he's definitely
slot mostly, if not slot only. So I'm definitely not

(13:21):
looking for anyone their size right first of all, that
you gotta be riding this tall to ride to Thunderbolt
at least, and that's probably five ten, one hundred and
ninety five or bigger, you know, like I don't need
any more little guys. And back to the Rogers conversation
in our one, I think you want more of a
route runner than a raw, big, strong, fast guy.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
Yeah, you know, run straight line guy.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
That's just a big play dude. And I'm not implying
that's Metcalf because Metcalf's more than that, or that you
have that part covered. But I just think a better
Robert Woods, you know what I mean, more of a
precise route runner type.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Would Alan Lazard fill that role for you.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
Somewhat. So I've said this before too, like Gave Davis
and Alan Lazard are very different stylistically. Gave Davis is
more of the run fastest straight line, pretty physical. Lazard's
more of a technician, but he's got good size too.
And and I do think Lazard is an underrated player.
He's off in the punchline. Oh he's Aaron Rodgers' buddy.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
No, he's good.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
I mean he's good. That both those guys are good,
and they're different styles. I probably would prefer Lazard to
Davis because of those reasons and the familiarity, but I
put them also, I lump them together for this reason
that that's about no offense to the two of them.

(14:48):
The worst I would accept at that position, you know
what I mean, Like, I think that's the best you could.
They might be a number two, Yeah you know, I
mean both would be helpful. You would have killed for
one of them last year, even without Rogers at times.
But I would also I kind of feel like if
I was in Omar's shoes right now, in the organization's shoes,

I know I can that's my fallback plan. But if
I can land a bigger fish, I'm gonna try to
land a bigger fish. Yeah, sure, you know what I mean.
But I can settle for that, and I know it
makes me better. But I'd like to do like even
if they traded for Lazard today or if they signed
Gabe Davis today, I'm not sure I would be done.
I would still listen, But all of a sudden, the

Yeah yeah, Paul asks rewind the second night of the
twenty twenty three NFL Draft. The Steelers are on the
board at thirty two. There's a debate between Joey Porter
Junior or Brian Branch In hindsight, which would you choose?

Now that's interesting.

You all know our love of Brian Branch.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
I say, anyone even listened to when they were on
the clock had this conversations, Right.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
I'm still taking Joey Porter Jr.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
So we adored Branch. We considered them in the first
round at Knox quite a con Yes, yes, I remember vividly.
And this is not any slight on any other Pittsburgh
media people that we go on the air with throwing
the draft. Yeah, I love those dudes are great, But
you and I do this more together than they do.

And frankly, I think we get deeper into the draft
than they do. So being on the air with I
don't even know who was with Steelers are on the
clock and they've been on the clock for twenty four hours,
and Joey Porter's kid is on the clock at a
need position. I mean it's a a mel Or Todd
or whoever.

That's a great pick at the time, and I couldn't
have agreed more, but I do remember many times. So, Mad,
is there anyone you'd consider here? Right?

And I'm Branch.

I would take Branch my second choice here. I would
take Branch. I think he's a special player. But this
is hindsight, you know, right, That's basically he's basically asking,
would you trade Porter for Branch? And I still think
the answers no, although I will say Branch to me

at this minute is better at what he does than
Porter is.

At what he does. But it's also more common.

Yeah, you know what I mean, Like Bemie Bishop's basically
a replacement level player at this stage of his career.
But I'd much rather have a replacement player level player
at the slot than an outside corner.

Last year. Last year, for example, you could have taken
Cooper de Jen and been comfortable to Brian Branch.

Those two, to me are the two you want. Yeah,
I mean they're the only two I'd even consider trading
a Porter for because they're great and they give you
a lot of versatility and they can do some things
outside with those guys.

Again, there are a lot of those guys available. Yeah,
Joey Porter Jr. I can get the B minus version
of those guys. Yeah, much easier than I get the
B minus version of a number one corner. Porter's also
like six', Four like you Beat Joey Porter. JR i
remember he came in after he was. Drafted he drove down.

The street basically like you, know he's big and you
see his combine, numbers but you shake his hands and
you see his length and his arms and it's like
this dude's.

Rare, yeah he can reach around this body and scratch
his nose right.

Right it's just there aren't many of them on the.
Planet branch is a great football, player. THOUGH i like
both of. Them, yeah, YEAH i could easily make the.
Case But i'd rather be in the market for a
slot than a six' four outside guy without.

ramsey rumors That the steelers are considering a trade and
Will the STEELERS pay tj More than Cleveland Did. MILES
garrett I think watts contract will be Less. THAN garrett's
i think right now the hold up is the probably
the guaranteed money part.

OF me i think it'll be in, the ballpark but.
SLIGHTLY less i don't think it needs to. BE more
i would. Be, SHOCKED yeah i would. UNDERSTAND it i
mean that's kind of how the arms. Race works, give
Me Does jamar? Chase say give me whoever the most
highest paid receiver is plus? ONE dollar, I mean i
know that's how, people WORK and i wouldn't EVER besmudge

Exactly that you can finangle that contract wording to make
a low calvery want however.

You WANT but I thought garrett was a slight overpay
because they were he was demanding, a trade they, were
desperate blah. Blah BLAH now I think parsons could come
in the meantime more.

Than that he should get.

The, most yeah if they're all, equal players he's, the
youngest he should get. The most he is the most value.
Going FORWARD but I think tj will make ninety five
percent Of the. Garrett contract As, for ramsey the word
that you use all, the time it's. A rumor i

VERY interested i just don't know how they can. Afford
it it's a big. CONTRACTUAL issue i think that's the
reason he's still. A, dolphin yeah is hardly anyone has a.
Cap space he can't really. Renegotiate it they would have
to move. Things around but all that's a loot conversation.
We had ramsey does that stuff. Extremely well if you,

THE numbers i know he's like twenty one million guaranteed
or Something, for, ramsey right and they're gonna PAY what,

Out patterson and if you do KNOW what, i mean
if you make a trade For A, jalen ramsey you're
completely out of the wide, receiver market and wide receiver
is a bigger need.

IT is i just don't know if. That's true i'd
have to study. It more i'm not saying you're right,
or wrong.

Just looking at what they have in cap space and
what they want to go into, the seat right having in,
cap space you don't have the money to add a
twenty one million, dollar Player.

And i'm not sure any team does as part of
the thicky For, the dolphins which maybe he's maybe everyone
the planet, knows that and he's gonna get CUT because
i don't think he'll Be a dolphin. This year like
they didn'tven ask him to come a, mini camp, you
know things, like that and maybe that's what Other teams i've.

Seen things he wants to play For A west. COAST
team i just saw that.

This week but. WHO knows, i mean. That's, surprised, fine yeah,
Right right i'd be very interested in. THE player i
don't know how the finances. Would work and the other
thing about, IT is i don't know how they could restructure,
current contracts, you know to get A receiver tj and.

Him all, you know it can't. ALL happen i. Just
can't there's just too.

Much, THERE yeah i don't know. THAT part i. DON'T
know i, Believe you but could you tear up or
could you restructure? Two CONTRACTS and tj number is gonna
be smaller this year than.

I do i think it's a super beneficial at, any
position two linebackers, playing together playing Next To, cam hayward
which isn't the most, cerebral position having an unbelievably smart.
Veteran center but the ONE thing i would not be
as sure about is does It help broderick so much

more being one position Away from isaac as opposed to three.
Positions AWAY maybe i. THINK so, I mean i think
you when you're in, your stance when you're in, the
huddle IA is i can tell, you anything.

YOU know i think what got lost on people last
year is just how young they were from the center,

see them all loose, face mask he can't see you

But even being right next, to him he might, be,
like well you seem slow out of your stance today
compared to last week. Or whatever you KNOW what, I

Is helpful and just having a guy with so many
starts under, his belt who's, super smart who's, really smart
who understands the game right next, to, YOU yeah i
think is going to have A massive.

YEAH so i mean Even like fraser adjusting the protections,

with him you KNOW what, i mean and helped that
he was good and had a great career and he
