He's presented by FedEx where now meets Next, and also

(00:27):
Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shock, by Always Se Flagging and Traffic Control,
and by us Steel.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Little physicality in the end zone to our right here
as we enter the third hour, as it's goal line time,
Matthew and Caleb Johnson trying to bounce that one in
and good lord man, that defensive line is.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Swarming as the second one. The first one was Rogers
saw a touchdown, defense didn't. So I don't know if
they got him, but it was a big collision at
the goal line that one. That one was no doubt right.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
In fact, they might have lost a yard or two.
And man, I tell you what a lot of offensive
line bodies Broderick and Zach and Mason all picking himself
off the the dirt on that one. You got y
A Black and Kean o' benton and Derek Harmon in there.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Herbig Sawyer bringing in an extra lineman. Maybe okay, can't
tell there's six out there.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
We'll take a peek here whenever they break the huddle
as Aaron Rodgers gets final instruction from Arthur Smith, and
it looks like this offensive. You're right, though, there was
it looked like maybe McCollum was in the huddle there
for yeah, Rogers and shotgun. Now uh here at the
goal line with five split out wide, He's gonna look left,
(01:43):
throw one up in the mount. Washington goes up and
gets it. That's some other stuff I wouldn't mind. Yeah,
I'm not typically a fan of the goal line fade.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
But if Roderick Jones just losing the mind about something,
is he It was upset about it. He kept going
to the raft he wanted there.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Like an excited or excited about the wind too, say,
hands of the hands of the face. He just went
to the one referee and put his hand up by
his chin, said hands of the face on.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
That one and being a touchdown either way ended.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Up being a touchdown either way. Penalty touchdown stands as
Mason Rudolph will check into the game.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Now, Yeah, McCormick keeps or not McCormick. McCollum keeps like
getting involved. I guess just wants to hear the call.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
I think so, yeah, right, that's crud as he will
check in now.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Got the big fellows up with a full back.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
They sure do, They sure do. For some goal line
stuff here, Yeah, Connor had full back with Caleb Johnson
behind him. Caleb Johnson will get the hand off, able
to get in.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
There initially, and then I think he fought his way through.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I would agree, did a good job keeping his feet
moving and staying upright with his center of gravity and
able on the second effort to get into the end zone.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, it looks like defense was gonna win that from
the start. But good work by Johnson.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
It did. It's certainly did.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I don't if they're making this a seven shots I mean,
I geah if they're doing seven of them, because.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
It looks like, well, no, never mind. It looked like
Aaron Rodgers was going to check back in, but I
think he was just just offering some instruction of Mason
Rudolph there instead. As he goes back and gets some water,
we'll see some more reps here. Second team in for
the defense, Second team in for the offense. Still got
Connor Hayward a fullback. Yeah, now with Trey Sermon behind.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Him, Jones pretty much exclusively playing right here.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yes he has and now loud and that's a sack
by de Marvin leel Is Mason will throw it out
of the back of the end zone. Not the best
rep there for the offense and.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Defense.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Defense punching back a little bit there, Yeah, good to see.
As let's see here, we'll have a couple of substitutions.
Look like Cole Holcomb is going to check out a
couple of changes to the offensive line as well too,
still have Chuck Clark is the safety? You got Mark
Robinson now looks like he's going to be the off
(04:00):
ball linebacker kind of middle of the defense there. M hm.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Still is Lee owl is that kind of big edge? Yeah,
you know.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Devin Harper out there at linebacker as well too.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Big fan.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
That's a good guy.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Good point that he's this is pretty high in the
depth chart for him. He is getting noticed as we thought.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
He runs around the edge of the break up there. Yeah,
Chuck Clark with a nice breakup, good pressure.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Really that one.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yeah, absolutely, Logan Lee and Devin Harper with some real
good pressure on that one as well too.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
To Mark didn't see it either, I mean his back
was to the pass. He just played the receiver's hands
and went right through it. Like your your coach to
do you flip your head around, it's usually too.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Late, too late. Yeah, totally, No, that was that was
well executed by all all aspects of the defense there.
We still got Logan Lee in there. I believe the
Joko is in there as well too. Will Howard in
at quarterback. He'll go under center still Connor a full back. Look,
I love it.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
J J.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Gallbreath goes in motion from right to left and the
give and we'll have a battle outside and a nice
tackle there. Fine undrafted rookie Sebastian Castro. Yeah, and so
one handed interception snag, really nice open field.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
That's a tough play against a pretty big back. Sermon.
That ended up being a true one on one situation.
Who who's the better man in that instance to get
to the goal line and it was Castro, something he
did at Iowa a lot, you know those type of plays.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, and that's a rat. I was gonna say, that's
a good way to end it. Think that'll do it
for practice. That was good, physical, physical, few minutes there
in the goal line drill to UH to round up
practice as the team will now meet near the ten
yard line, break down, final words from Mike Tomlin, and
that will put a bow on our final weekend. Was
this practice? Ten?
Speaker 3 (05:44):
I think you said it was nine yesterday. I think
that rings a bell, So ten.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I think number. I think number ten in the books
for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
As uh'll break tomorrow, a.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Little break tomorrow, then we'll be back Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
then obviously off the Jacksonville Friday games, Saturday, day off Sunday,
and then back for a few days that following week.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
And we won't have a show tomorrow too, just because
we do shows when there's practice. You need to tell
people that more often.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, no, exactly, right, exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
We have had some shows when there's no practice in
front of us, but now we will not be.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yes. If it's a day off for the team, it's
a day off for the broad team broadcasts as well too,
which well earned, well earned, and especially for you, Matt,
because I think in the last like three weeks, I
think you've probably spent three nights at your own house.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
That's true. But you've been doing shows left and right too,
so I'm sure a day of not talking or so
it would be good for you.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yes, it would. I'm gonna spend some time in the
backyard garden nice and then do a whole lot of nothing,
a little yeah, absolutely, maybe cook a nice dinner for
my for my wife and my and my daughters. As now,
they are bringing all the kids up to the to
the sideline.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
The extensive audio autograph session coming here.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Absolutely and once again like at least half maybe more
of the kids down there wearing those TJ what Jersey's
number ninety. You gotta love it, we got to.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
I'm sure he was the leader in the clubhouse last
year in Jerseys, but he's just monopolized it this year.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Last year that's good. Yeah, I think so. Honestly the
only year that it ever was, I think in question
since post.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Best since Ben. Yeah, there was a lot of sevens.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Kenny's rookie year. There were a ton of eights everywhere.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I guess that's true. But guy and yeah, yeah, fresh
jerseys he got for Christmas or whatever.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
You know, Yeah, and I think you know, for his
first Like people forget this, and this is what always
drives me crazy when people are like Steelers fans always
hated Kenny Pickett. No, you hit a top ten jersey
in the NFL with sales wise for his first like
five months, six months in the league.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yeah, ten jersey sales in the league town Yeah, before he.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Ever even got here to trading camp. But yeah, number ninety.
I mean he's the second.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Now, I guess it is a conversation. It's not eight
or metcalf.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
And you're talking in terms of you're talking in terms
of like this popularity. Yeah, yeah, not the like we
see a ton of palm all.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
You do see tro troy As. You'll always see like
a Lambert, you know, but they're not number kill right
right right, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
There's a lot of fifty six, is man. A lot
of fifty six is a lot of maybe Joey Porter
Junior to a lot of twenty four's.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
I bet it'll be Rogers before long Metcalfe, but maybe
people don't think about it. I'm gonna buy a jersey
and he's probably gonna be your one year you.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Know, right, Yeah, No, that's a that's a very good
point too. Now, if you end up having a lot
of success this year, people will buy that Aaron Rodgers
jersey as a keepsake.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
As popular as cam is. I don't see a ton
in ninety seven.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, you know what. That's that's a good point by.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Pound for pound for popularity, you know. Yeah, you don't
see a ton.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
You don't see a ton, and man, that'd be a
that'd be a good jersey, I tell you what. That's
an old timer to have, right, that's yeah. We got
a shazier down here in front of us. To the left,
you see a few.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
There's Kirkland walking by, and there's a toime to. Yeah,
there's a ton to pick from. But there's a Rogers
Green Bay. But yeah, I don't know who then the
second most sold guy is right now in the question.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Maybe I'll have to go ask the good people at
the Steelers pro shop that question. There's someone in a
DK metcalf Seattle Seahawks jersey down there along the sideline
as well.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Ims with that. No, yeah, especially you had it before,
you know, if you were a DK fan.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
R exactly right, which in a shocker here, Matt. First
guy on the drugs today, John new Smith.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
It's always him and Ramball once again.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, and there is a ton of family.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
There's no room to even use the judge to use the.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Jugs because there's so many fans down on the field
with it being family day here, which is pretty stink
and cool to see.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
It is it is.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
It's been a long week for these guys, six straight
days out here. They deserve it as well too.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Launching the cafeteria was packed with family.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Yeah, I imagine dinner will probably not just.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Players, you know, like there's yeah, coaches and you know, executives.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Max was telling me like his you know, Max has
a lot of cousins that played Division I football and
high level football players. And Max is like my cousins
would come out here every year for family Day, was like,
and they'd be staying on the sideline chirping me like
how did you not make that block? Can I be like, hey,
you got peanut gallery, I'm on the field here, you're
in the stand.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
And they're not Pittsburgh's. They came from far Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
They they came from out West and Florida. And yeah,
he's a lot of there's a lot of starks is
in Michigan too, and Detroit.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
He wonder if there's a limit how many you can invite.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
It's a good question.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
It's not like tickets to a game, you know, here
you get four or whatever.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah, if a dozen of your family members want to
come out here, I mean why not?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Why not? All you need the environment, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Absolutely, all you need is maybe a couple extra.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Is this queen here about the signing and.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
The cafeteria kids to sign? Yep, Patrick Queen is uh
is starting the autograph line here with all these kids.
That's pretty cool to see from him.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
It is.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Let's see, we got some of the edge rushers are
down there working on some extra stuff in front of us.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
I would think a day like this, it's gonna be
a little less post practice practice stuff. Unlus, you're off tomorrow,
and maybe you're even going home with your family.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Would you know a lot of these people, a lot
of these guys are going home with their families, showered up,
and and you know that they've got places and houses
and all of that here as well.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Something day and I talk about every year too, is
like that off day tomorrow, Like especially the young guys
that won't go back to their house in Pittsburgh. You
know they might not have one yet, right right, I
mean they probably don't. I think most of them probably
stay here and go hit golf balls or fish. Yeah exactly,
(11:21):
you know, go the driving right and whatever. Yeah, I mean, and.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Like that's Wolf and Tounch would tell the stories of
like on their off days they would go to the
movies all day because storm rooms didn't have air conditioning,
So like we go to the movies all day and
take naps and just sit in the air conditioning.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Let's what's Rambo two again?
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, like we watched Stripes like seven times.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Yeah, I guess if that's if your number one goal
is like food and air conditioning, that'll work.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
And for a lot of the guys too, it's probably
just a nice day to like I'm gonna get some massages. Yeah,
I'm gonna do some light workout stuff, and I'm gonna nap.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, maybe I'll get a lift in. But I was
thinking even just social things with your friends, you know,
like whoever's here, and yes, I'm gonna stick my nose
in my playbook too.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Get up in the morning. We'll get a little work
done and then maybe we'll go fish or we'll go
to the movies or you know, these guys like there's
bowling alleys and you know, different kind of like archery
ranges and gun ranges and stuff around town here that.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
I think there's a group that sees their family, and
then there's a group that kind of bonds as young
guys that don't have a spot.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Yes, you know, yes, exactly right. And that's again that's
and that's right, getting back to the Aaron Rodgers stuff
we were talking about. That's the beauty of the locker room.
Everyone's in different journeys, different periods. You know, you've been.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
It's great about being away too, you know, like they
still have a dorm room, they have a place to stay,
you know absolutely.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
You know, you've got people like Cam and TJ. You know,
who are married with children and grown dudes.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
They're probably like doing what you just said, and I'm
gonna cook dinner for my family. Yeah, see the young pups,
take them to school or whatever.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
You know, exactly make sure that you know that landscaping
or home remodeling job that we have going on is
getting done correctly. And then yeah, for some of the
younger guys, like they might have an apartment back in Pittsburgh.
But I'm just gonna stay here and might not if
you're if you're a guy who isn't sure about your
status on the team, was.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Not enough time to go back to Louisiana or California
or one.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Of these guys don't have cars either, you know, like
you're not gonna rent a car for three and a
half weeks, like it's going to be expensive, so you get.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Uber somewhere or you know, jump and ride with a buddy.
But I always find it interesting of up at camp
here on an off day, especially after you've gotten to
know people pretty well. Yeah, you know what what do
people do?
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Yeah? No, that's that's that's good, and it is You'll
like again, you'll.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
See there still open, area is still.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Open all that, and a lot of times they'll have
stuff going on here as well too, you know what
I mean, Like, yeah, I remember one year, man Matt.
I think this might have been pre COVID, so like
eighteen or nineteen that I was out here and they
had like a I'm probably gonna describe it the wrong way,
but it was an off day, okay, and I stayed
out here. I don't even know why you know what
(13:56):
I mean. I think it was. I was just here.
I think it was like my first year on that
once or twice two, like I should probably be you
know whatever type thing.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
I remember the one year I had like a bunch
of articles to write. Yeah, like no one will bug me.
I'll just you know, bang them out and then it
kind of goes down, you know.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah, exactly right. And there was like they had like
a again, for lack of better terms, like a sleep
seminar with a sleep doctor. Oh and so it was
this doctor from Sweden who's like a world renowned sleep expert.
He's like a professor at cal Berkeley I think, And
he basically did like an hour long seminar on how
you can get the best sleep, you know, like the
(14:32):
things that prevent you from getting sleep how to Yeah,
and I still remember like him talking about going to
bed and waking up at the same time every day.
You know, that's a huge support, Like whatever time you
go to bed, go to bed, whatever time you wake up.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Wake up same time every day. Yeah, you know, like
don't yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Don't drink caffeine after you know, noone or one o'clock,
because then it's still in your system, like all those
different things that that he was running through with the
team and I sat in on it for like, yeah,
it was pretty cool. Again, a lot of that stuff
that like.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
The Cam Haywards aren't here for that, But there is
something for you here to learn or make you a
better human being, whether it's footballer late or not.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
If you don't know that, like yeah, they if you
don't want to waste to day, there's plenty to do
to not waste today.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
You know what I mean. And of course the weight
room's open and.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Maybe an extra chance for you know, some some some therapy,
some massage, work time with trainers, all that different stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
I wonder if the assistant coaches go home too, or.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
I'd imagine it's probably a balance of both.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Yeah, you know, I mean that's that's usually on Tomlin.
I would think, is hey, you guys earned to day too,
or hey, are we gonna all get together and.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Grind out some tape.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Or you know what's going wrong? What's going right? We
need this extra time and I'll take you to a
great dinner, you know what I mean, Like end early
ended up going by the best dinner we could or whatever.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
You know, there's some good places to have dinner around here. Yeah, sure,
as Roman Wilson getting some work on the jugs machine
down there now there Patrick Queen, Jalen Warren and Isaiah
louder Milk signing autogra here on the near side. Looks
like Ben Scronic is heading over to do some signing
as well too. Let's take a break here, our first
break of the four o'clock hour. We'll put a bow
(16:09):
on everything going out here on practice. Maybe do our
around the league segment when we return on the other side.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
What happened the last twenty four hour, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
We'll see what's going on. Get to some tweets as
well too. Yeah, hit us up as as we put
a start to put a bow on everything going on
here today. Plenty to get too. Still hit us up
on Twitter if you want to get involved. At Williams
and NFL at West Seuler. He is Matt Williams and
I'm West Sheuler. This is the Drive on Steelers Nation
Radio on the Steelers Audio.
Speaker 1 (16:35):

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Steel Practice in the books for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the
final weekend practice here for the Black and Gold. It
all happened so fast, match right now.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
A million people still in.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
The There are a million people still in the field,
million people still waiting for autographs. Not making me feel
great about the traffic when we get out of here.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
A little slow moving for a while.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
That's all right. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
And regardless, we'll be sleeping in our own beds for
the next two nights, which is always a welcome development.
This tim again look forward to. But you're right, I mean,
I think this is. It's been probably twenty minutes since
practice ended, and the field is still crowded with family
and friends and young.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Kids, wives and all kinds of stuff.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's awesome.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
It's a good environment.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
It sure is I see Jeans Jeene Stertors down there.
He's got his grand kids going up to Arthur Smith
and saying, Okay, pretty cool. Troy Falton, who's talking to
somebody down there.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
A whole lot, whole lot Jean enjoys himself.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
You know, I'm wondering, is that because Vince Williams is
here today. I don't think before I thought that that's
not seen them. I don't think it. I don't think
that's en.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
I see who you're talking about. It might be, I'm
not sure.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
I'm not positive. I also don't know why he'd be
wearing a blue shirt like I'm sure he's probably wearing
something Steelers that they that they gave him. But again,
you never know. As Yeah, there's some kids running on
the field here having a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Those little kids are super tiny, just running all over
the field.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
The best it really is. There's there's there's nothing like it,
and it's cool. And listen. All the NFL teams they
try and foster this family environment, but I think the
Steelers are towards the top of the list of doing
it right. Yeah, Matt news from Mike Tomlin, who just
spoke seconds ago. Alex high Smith left practice early with
a groin injury severe severity TBD.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Yeah, don't love that. They can linger a little bit,
but got a lot of time. He certainly doesn't need
to be involved in the preseason game and obviously is
tomorrow off. I would imagine we don't see him Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Yeah, you know, I think that's it. I mean again,
this time he yeared, Especially.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
With a guy like that, Just get him to the
starting line.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Yeah, exactly right. Just get him to the starting line
healthy and ready to go in September, and everything else
is kind of after the fact, Matt.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
I'm mucking overreafter that. But something to monitor.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
No, yeah, absolutely, what you say. We turned to some
of these tweets here, got all along too. Yeah, we
got a few, and he tweets us and says enjoyed.
You know, talk about the conversation of the future eighteen
game schedule. Would teams be allowed to carry more players
on the roster if slash when that happens.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
I assume, I would assume. I think it'd be pretty
crazy not to. You're making a lot more money right that.
That's actually one of my favorite things that came out
of COVID, and it was something I was before i'd
ever heard what COVID was. I'm like, why is the
practice squad so small? And they're paying these guys next
to nothing half the time, they just wear sweats on
the sideline, they don't even travel with the team.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
It's like very very minimal effect to your bottom line.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
And then COVID they bumped it up quite a bit
and allowed some veterans on there, and I think that's
been wonderful. The more employment of players and the more development,
the better. But I would definitely think the roster spots
go at least two spots, maybe noticeably more.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Why not, you know, and maybe we get to the
point where like you can have your guys active on
game day.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
I don't quite understand that.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
I know, why do you have to have a hand
of an active on a handful of inactives on game day?
Whatever the roster size is, let.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Them Yeah, maybe game day roster at least could be
two spots bigger, Yeah, right right.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Yeah, two or three spots bigger. Yeah, let's I think
that's the future. I think so too. Scott tweets us
and says with Calvin Austin, not practic to sing, I
hope to see Roman Wilson quite a bit today. And
I think we saw Rode Wilson quite a bit today,
we did.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
I thought there was one or two that were good,
one or two that were bad. I think all and
always had a good camp, didn't you agree, Oh absolutely? Yea, yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
I mean it took a few days, but I think
really since maybe Thursday, you know, like the last three
or four days, I think we've really started to see
him get involved, Like he had a really nice block
today on Jalen Ramsey. And you know this too for
the Steelers, for Arthur Smith's offense, like that number two
wide receiver is gonna have to be able to block
if absolutely you want the trust to be out there
(21:34):
on the field some of the great like we saw
him on Thursday. I think it was right when he
made that great catch on Joey.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Porter judea banged up on. I think that's important.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Obviously your wide receiver has to be able to make
plays down first form wrong, but you got it. Maybe
in this offense more than most. You got to trust
him to pass block as well to or to run
block part of me, and I thought he had a
good at that today as well too.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
And you know, coming from Michigan with Harbor, that was
something that was ingrained in him and it absolutely he
reflected in his college tape that was a pickings issue.
You know, like a lot of times on run plays,
they are too many times on run play. It's not
a lot they would pull him out and it's too
much of a tell your best receivers on the field,
and if he's not going to give you enough as
(22:16):
a blocker, makes it tough. You got to be a
real star to pull that off.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Absolutely, absolutely Angry Bike Lane tweets us and says, tell
me something you've seen that will make you think the
Steelers will win a playoff game this year?
Speaker 3 (22:30):
How about Ramsey Cool? I mean, man, that dude is phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Probably the single standout of camp so far.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
I think he's been the best player here.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Yeah, I think that's I think then, and listen, this
is one thing and we know there and I get it,
there's rhymes for the reason. But like the playoff drought,
you know, no, we're aware, We're well aware. Everyone is aware.
I think a big part of that, like when you
dig deeper into it, everybody points out in those consecutive
However many it's been you know, five, five or whatever,
(23:02):
six maybe that the Steelers have lost in the playoffs
in a row. You look at a lot of those
scores and it's the defense give up a ton of points.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Yeah, early too.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Jacksonville, a Kansas City, to Cleveland to Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Early, early in the game too, right, right.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
I think, And obviously we could talk about Aaron Rodgers
and and there's merit there.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Sure, but you know you don't have Burrow or Mahomes.
You know you can't get behind that early.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
That my right, right, exactly right. But my biggest kind
of encouragement that they'll be different this January than the
past few januaries. I don't think this this defense isn't
going to be giving up thirty five points in a
playoff game.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
I'd be surprised. And you know, back to our first
quarter point differential stuff too. It's so deep that even
as the season goes on, I could I could think
that they would handle the the length of the season better.
I think there's been a non excuse, this is how
the league works, that they've sometimes limped into the playoffs
after a bunch of tough games, and it shows last
(23:59):
year was the most obvious example one. That's why it's
so hard to win a playoff game. I mean, they're
not the only team banged up, but they play a
lot of they're tougher games late than the defensive on
the field too much, and all of a sudden, the
depth is really tested. I think the defensive depth is
as good as I can remember.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
That's a very good way to put it. At important positions.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Too, right, big people, the corners. Right.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Uh, let's see here, Matt, I did want to do
just one around the league, kind of pertinent topic for
you today. James Cook, Bill's.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
Running Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Didn't practice. He was asked why, he said business, and
then he was followed up and asked will you practice
tomorrow Monday because the Bills have practice tomorrow, and he
gave a one word reply, business.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
Yeah. He wants a contract.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
He wants a contract, wants a big one, big one,
and he had a very solid year with out. But
how if you were Buffalo, how do you approach this one?
Speaker 3 (24:51):
That's sticky because I don't think he's a Tier one
running back, but I think he's getting better and better.
Your obvious goal, I mean, you're one of the best
teams in the league, and you know it. Now, Alan
makes running backs and everybody's jobs a little easier. Maybe
Cook is maxed out, but again I thought he's been
progressing well. He's not the biggest every down type of guy,
(25:14):
you know, so that's part of the you know, the
way of looking at this too. But he does handle
a big workload, had a ton of touchdowns this past year,
which probably won't keep up. I don't know. I might
play hardball on this one, wag him out, franchise him
and see where he's at. But I would from what
I understand, he's asking for a lot more than probably
(25:35):
one running right right right, And if that's a breaking point,
then I probably say sorry. But maybe he can come
to a common ground. Will Howard coming on over here, and.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Kids are going all the kids are going crazy for
Will Howard. Troy Faltanu signing some autographs as well too.
Uh yeah, that's that's a that's a that's a tricky
one for Buffalo. It is he without he, without a doubt,
had a very good year last year. But I don't
think any of us are putting him in the Saquon Barkley,
Derek Henry.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
But he's important and he helps you win, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
And they you know, on that offense, obviously they have
one of the best doing it right now in Josh Allen,
maybe the best doing it with all respect to Patrick.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Mahomes at least last year. No one's been better off the.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
Way that they played last year. James Cook is kind
of like their number two on that offense. They don't
have a lot of other stars on that offense, and
so that makes it I think a trickier navigation for
Buffalo here in the days ahead.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Another Bill's offensive note that just I know that you
look at them as one of the best teams in
the NFC Riflelly, so it almost is like a Stealer
esque uncommon offensive line injury luck. They've been hardly any
injuries over the last two years on the offensive line.
I remember when the Steelers had that stretch going like, yeah,
it's a wonderful thing, but that doesn't mean it's bound
(26:55):
to blow up on you. But it has been part
of their success. They have not had to deal with
any and basically zero offensive line.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Andrews yes, and last year that went the other way.
We're hoping it gets back to some some good luck
in that regard. As I see right here, Matt. You
see these Ohio State fans with the Jack Sawyer trying
to or maybe it's a Will Howard jersey, but there's
two Ohio State fans with a jersey down here trying
to get Will Howard's attention. Oh okay, yeah, those guys,
him and Jack Sawyer. I tell you what, from what
I've seen, every time they've seen something popular, every time
(27:23):
they've seen some scarlet, some fan holding up something Ohio State,
they'll come over and sign it. So we'll see. I
see if that continues as Yeah, Mason Rudolph's down there
signing now as well too.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
There's still a lot of activity, I mean, not much football,
but there's a lot of people on the field.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
There's a lot of strollers, there's the field.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
There having a good time, a lot.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Of strollers, a lot of a lot of young parents
out there enjoying themselves. And uh, that's that's pretty cool.
That's a lot of fun to see somebody's jogging with
their two kids right now down into the end zone.
It's it's a lot of and and again, beautiful day
like it'd be one of those days if it was
ninety five degrees out here and you were trying to
have the kids out.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Here, it would be quite as glorious.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Yeah, that's pretty tough, but this is, you know, about
seventy five degrees and sunny, perfect perfect weather forward here
so far as Yeah, real good day on all, real
good day all in all. Hoping nothing serious with Alex
high Smith that would kind of spoil it, certainly, But
other than that, I think this was. Man, I think
this was a very successful day, Matt. I think we
saw a lot of guys pop. We saw some physicality. Yeah,
(28:25):
not the best day from the offense again, but yeah,
say the offense still some still made some plays, and
I thought too, even when they were struggling, we saw
better protection from the offensive line. Still wouldn't call it great,
but better than what we've seen to this standpoint. Is
now Troy Foulton, who's getting a massive, massive crowd of kids.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Yeah around they made the mistake his choice, but he
came over to the rail here and people are loving
seeing him.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Oh, absolutely, And I think they're gonna love seeing him
this year, Matt. I'm very excited about what he's going
to do.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Yeah, I think he has a chance to be a star.
I would just chatting with Labs a little bit though,
and you know, the stuff that you can measure, like
the the goal line and the seven shot stuff was
very very defensive. Yes, and results.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
I completely agree, and we've seen a lot of that.
But hey, that's that's it's a good is it's a
very good defense.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
And he mentioned like in the goal line drill, I
mean it was Harmon and Benton out there. I mean
they're not bottom of the roster, right right, they're not.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
And they're guys that were very high on as well too.
And uh that we've talked about plenty. Okay, Matt before
we go to break, Yeah, I gotta tell you this.
This is funny. Do you see the guy on about
the ten yard line white jersey and white bucket hat. Yes,
his jersey is the number zero one. Yeah, I see,
And on the back plate it says analytics on the
name plate. Okay, it's a custom jersey number zero one
(29:47):
with analytics on the You think he's a fan of Matt.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Stats, Maybe maybe set him down the bridge version.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Oh just that was hilarious. I saw this. But it
says analytics across the that's nuts.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
Okay, Hey, whatever, people people, whatever.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
People want to spend their that's you won't find anybody
else wearing that jersey.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
That one's unique, that one's unique.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
Certainly I love it. All Right, let's get to our
final break. A guy that we talked about plenty today,
Matt that I think, Hey, if you want to highlight
someone on the offense who's making plays, Darnell Washington.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Now he's over there chatting with Andy WHITEHLL. Looks like
maybe he's telling him he's more analytics.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
He's telling him. Have you seen this guy's in Matt
status on Steelers dot Com.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
I might have to look him up.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
One guy, that one guy we got to ask Andy,
who is that? Who's that? Hey, mister Whitel, who's that
guy in the analytics jersey that was talking to you?
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Yeah? That's crazy.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
One guy. One guy that we highlighted a few times
today that that made some plays was Darnell Washington.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
Made a big grabbing the end zone.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
The end zone, couple rumbling and bumbling runs.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
Down the sideline, getting a little more.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Yeah, let's let's hear what he had to say. When
we return, we'll give some final thoughts, maybe some final
tweets as well too, as we put a bow on
today's practice, this week's practice before getting a well earned
day off on Monday, West Juler Matt Williamson. It is
a special edition of the Drive here on the now
starting to get a little bit quieter Saint Vincent College
(31:14):
Campus slightly, but uh, I think it's still gonna be
a little chaos trying to get out of here. We
got one more segment to go before we do so,
and it's all part of our ongoing training camp coverage
here on Steelers Nation Radio, on the Steelers Audio.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Network, iHeartRadio's live coverage job Dot twenty twenty five Steelers
Training Camp is presented by Fadex where Now meets Next
and also brought to you by bud Light, Independence Health
System by Pennsylvania One Call System, by Live Casino, Calciente
(31:50):
Pizza and Draft House by Tom's Appliances, South Hills Auto, Laurel,
Highlands Visitors Bureau, Wemax, Select Realty, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro
Shop and by us Steal.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Final segment here of our Sunday show on campus before
the Steelers get a day off, We get a day off.
Will Howard now down in the end zone. Someone's got
a big Ohio state flag. I'm sure they'll get that
signed for sure. But the field now finally going a
little quiet here, Matt, as people start to head up
to dinner.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Yeah, there's a player or two still around.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
There is, and we gotta give a we gotta give
a big shout out to Patrick Queen. I mean he
signed autographs for about from the minute practice ended forty
minutes ago and still yeah, I mean he went down
the line. Every single kid who was down there on
the field got an autograph from Patrick Queen. Pretty cool,
Pretty nice to see.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Pivotal player this year, no doubt. Yeah, and I expect
them to be noticeably better this year.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
There's a lot of X factors with this team. Yeah,
but I think him and Peyton Wilson is kind of
an underdiscussed because I think there's a quiet confidence there. Yeah,
it's like a big question mark, but they could be.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
There's a lot of linebackers short teams right now. And
even if you could just be above average top position, yeah,
maybe you would take it. Because the corners are gonna
be really strong. The guys in front of them are
gonna be really strong. Give me the tenth best linebacker Corps. Yeah,
I'd take that all day long. And I think that's
not crazy to ask.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
I don't think it is. I certainly don't think it is.
A guy who had himself another couple of nice snags today.
Darnell Washington really starting to come on in this training camp,
heading into his third year in the National Football League.
I am as well too, as Hey, look, you're talking
about lack of Cam Hayward jerseys. Look a brand new
ninety seven Cam Hayward on these throwbacks walking down the sidewalk.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Jerry Porter Junior.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Yeah, with a Joey Porter Junior as well too. Maybe
we'll see some eighty jerseys next year if Darnell Washington
has a big year this year. Here's what the big
man had to say.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
He is a big man, Darnold. You've played in this
offense for a year, but obviously things are a little
bit different.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
Johnny added to the room. But what do you like
about this year's offense as supposed to? Maybe what what
you guys ran out there.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
Last year for, like, you know, just added John will
to the room, our room, you know it. It just
bring a new flavor to the room. So, uh, you know,
you know, Pat, everybody no move and you know Connor
he got you know, a little wiggingly guy. I'm more like,
you know, bigger whatever. And John New you know, he's
just bring a different season into the room. So I
feel like that not only help our room, but you
know the often because a whole he been with Art,
(34:17):
so you know, he kind of knows, you know, things
like that. We're a old four person over to go,
you know, anything anything we can. So I feel like,
you know, adding people to our roster just a plus.
Speaker 4 (34:29):
You try, like.
Speaker 5 (34:29):
Helple big catches today, how much more improved do you
feel like the hight catching is?
Speaker 3 (34:34):
And I'm stre in looved, you feel like rorsotiate.
Speaker 5 (34:37):
And uh just speaking of uh about today, you know, yeah,
I feel like just me as a person, you.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
Know, improved, you know in that area.
Speaker 5 (34:48):
I feel like that was just like the biggest question,
you know, not even just last season, but just.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Coming out the ground.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
You know, everybody was just all he was blocking tight end,
he was blocking tight ends.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
But you know I never r really had.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
To a chance to showcase my pass catching or you know,
just leaking the ball. So I feel like that just
an area that I really have to continue to improve
it in and.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
Keep you know, displaying it out here.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
On the practice field so it shows up on the
Sundays or you know, whenever game he plays.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Though, I said, do you feel like you've always been
a good pass catching that's something that you just haven't
got to show or if you really tried to improve.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
That area personally, I feel like I always been a
good fast catcher, you know, just going back to like
I'm I I it's been some years now, but going
back to high school.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
You know, I never blot you know, I was a receiver.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
In high school and you know, just transition to tight
end college and you know that's when I start letting.
The block was college. So I feel like I always
you know, able to catch the ball. It's just kind
of hard to showcase it when you're very good at
something else, and you know, you got other guys in a.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
Room who is excellent in that area.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
So you know, I mean, I don't complain though, you know,
I just embraced my role in having the bids were
y Were.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
You like the biggest guy on the field even as
a wide receiver.
Speaker 5 (35:55):
Yeah, for sure, if you turn on the tail, I'm
still doing the biggest food on the field.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
During mini camp I asked you about your role in
the offense.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
You said, Arthur Smith is asking a lot more of
you now that you've had about.
Speaker 4 (36:06):
Like nine practices.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
So how do you feel about the the expanded role
that you're getting this year and how that fits in
with Aaron Rodgers and everyone else.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
Yeah, you know, just with my role. You know, just today,
like as she mentioned, she saw, you know, me catching
a little bit more balls today and uh, you know,
just with this offense, I just feel like my roles
is imprisoning day by day just kind of I just
gotta keep showing it, keep displacing it, displaying it, and
uh things like that. So it's just just pretty much
(36:35):
to do what I can and just get a bigger role,
you know, sooner or or something.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Talk about your.
Speaker 6 (36:40):
Second nature wanting to be a second nature vie. What
do you say when people ask the question, could this
guy actually.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Be an NFL tackle? Especially with what you've been.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Doing out here in some of these drills, can I well.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
I mean if someone that like, I feel like if
you said the pass catching is maybe the biggest question
about you, the second biggest question this might be could this.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
Guy actually be a team in the NFL wanted to be? Personally,
I feel like I can, you know, but uh, right now.
Speaker 5 (37:05):
You know I went tight end, so I will focus
on that like you know, later on down the road
or you know, any time in the road, or if
they asked for me to do that. You know, I'm
a stilus to my best ability. I personally, you know
I'm gonna do with lots of confidence. So I feel
like I can if I wanted.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
To, I'm gonna see you said it right now, or
you look at like a second career at some point
you're gonna so you're forty doing that.
Speaker 4 (37:28):
But I mean I don't ever talking like that before.
Speaker 5 (37:31):
But I mean I don't know what guy you know
got to play for me? But after right now you
know the tight end role until I can't or whenever
my time is though.
Speaker 6 (37:41):
So you're not resistant since the idea necessarily or you're
not like I guess offended The people say.
Speaker 5 (37:47):
That, no, not at all. You know, I personally me,
I'm over. I'm an open minded dude. So if that
that comes in day to day life, football standpoint, relationship standpoint,
I'm just an open minded dude, you know I did
to take criticism about to take anything like that.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
I see both sides of every story. Yeah, that's how
I live.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Like I'm kind of going off of all of that.
Just how much fun was back come back the last time?
Speaker 4 (38:12):
Yeah, for sure. That's like probably be me the fund
of drill that.
Speaker 5 (38:15):
We probably do just because the energy, the mixed emotions, uh,
the competitive list of everybody out there, even though just
even with the running backs and just seeing them doing
it back to back and back and even when they lose,
they get back up, say one more time, one more time.
So just seeing that excites me, you know, getting my
blood flown a little bit. And I mean I'm the
(38:36):
same way. If I lose the rep, I'm a you know,
I want to actually go again and keep going into
you know I could you know, obviously win.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
But you want every time though, so.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
The biggest guys, but probably see the biggest guys, but
you learn the use your siving game.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
I have a six to one linebacker on me. You know,
how do you have you've learned? How involved in size?
Speaker 2 (39:00):
That makes sense?
Speaker 4 (39:01):
Yeah, I feel like I'm still learning.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
I know today I'm going to guess a safety don't
one to one competition, they do a flag off of
the bru It's just a second nature, you know, Like
I didn't think I fully extended, but it's just like
my body and I'm probably just you know, just more
and bigger. So maybe I probably did mump up a
little bit to me, but to him, it's like, you know,
(39:25):
a lot more for us. So he does this and
then the ref season is or a different reaction. So
I guess just not trying to do it as much,
you know, or just try to win more clean, cleanly
and just less it is and.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
All that players to the off.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Darn I Washington there, I tell you what. I think
he's gonna be in for a big year. Yeah, I
I really. I know We've mentioned this a few times,
but some of the matchup nightmares that they can create
with those tight ends or except.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
All the varieties of different personnel packages you can put
out there, and I mean, so much different than Connor
Hayward or Johnny Smith, but they the opponent might still
count him as a te you know, like there's a
lot to be said for that. And he's a unique player.
I mean, he's massive, he understands how to use his size.
I thought he's one of the most improved Steelers.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
Last year too, it's been good.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Yeah, good way to put it. And we and we
started to see him in moments being you know, a
significant part of that offense. And I think that's gonna
that has to grow this year. I would think in
year three for him.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
It's gonna be tough, you know, fighting for targets. I
mean there's a lot of guys even just in your
position room that need him. But he's on the field
a lot.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally. And as you mentioned, a lot
of twelve personnel, a lot of thirteen personnel.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
Absolutely, and they were at.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
The top of the league, what top like sixth and
twelve personnel and first and thirteen personnel and first if
you combine.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
The exactly multiple tight ends, they were number one. Yeah,
and that's I bet that's one or two this year.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
Yeah. Their off season has really shown that.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
I completely agree with you. Looks like two Steelers two stillers.
Speaker 5 (40:59):
Man.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
I went a little YenS there.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Yeah, there's kind of chatting.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
I'm wondering, is that is that Ramsey on the right.
I can't tell.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
It's really far away, and they're just sitting there with
a gatorade or whatever, having a good time.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
Bob Labriola's binoculars and he is no longer here with us.
But yeah, there's two Steelers that have just been sitting
over there chopping it up on the bench. Looks like defensive,
like I wonder if go anywhere. Maybe Sleigh and Ramsey,
I don't know, but they're like the only two ones
left out here other than a couple of members of
the grounds crew. Got sprinklers, got the sprinklers going, and
(41:31):
I think now it looks like autographic're out a little bit.
And with that, matt Our marathon week is clear. Ye. Yeah,
it was a lot of fun. But for a break,
Yeah one hundred, as is my wife, who I'm sure
wants some help with the two heathens.
Speaker 5 (41:50):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (41:51):

stuff here on the field. That's going to continue next week,
