Speaker 1 (00:02):
Iheartradios live coverage of about twenty twenty five Steelers training camp.
He's presented by Fatex where Now meets Next, and also
brought to you by First National Bank, by Kulucy Chevrolet,
iron Workers Union Number three, by Easy Home Exteriors, by
SMT Bank, we Max Select Realty, by Tons Appliances, the

(00:25):
Pittsburgh Steelers Pro shot by Always Safe Flagging and Traffic Control,
and by US.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Steel Practice on going in front of us. We a
little seven on seven here, Matt, little little skeleton action
maybe if you will as.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Uh QB one's hot still man.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
QB one is slanging them out there.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, it's coming out on time again seven on seven,
but still well. We talked about I don't know twenty minutes,
half hour ago, whatever it was that he put one
that hit Connor Hayward in the face mask and got intercepted.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
That's how hard at ricochet.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
H right, great throw, and it was totally on Hayward
not to have his head around ready to receive a
great throw. Well, I don't know if it's the same route,
but it's pretty similar. He put he threaded the needle
to Hayward and Hayward was very recipient at this time
around three or four. Here this while we were at break,
where the ball's coming out fast. It's coming out quick,

(01:20):
it's decisive, much bigger level of comfort and frankly in
a seven on seven droll, even against the best defense
of all time, this is what you expect from eight. Yeah,
you know, this is just he's had. I'm sure he's
had a million practices like this in his career where
it's just boom boom, put it on him. There's another
one yep.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Right hold on JJ gallbreath about twenty yards downfield on yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Hit him and stride rope. Baby, ball's coming out on time.
We clicking.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I was watching the far side field too, where we
got one on ones going on with the offense. Yeah
and defense. This is again we wish that this was
closer for him.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Sometimes short change in the audience.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
But I tell you what, another great rep by Troy
Faltanu against t J watt Man. Just he he is.
He is looking the.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Part that right tackle, I tell you, And it doesn't
get harder than that.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
It's right. If he can hold his own against that guy,
he's gonna be just fine.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Absolutely, And I've been a real good practice for him.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
I tell you what, the you know, the idea of
end listen, it's it's still got to develop. You still
got to see it happen in stadium and this year
and moving forward. But the prospect of him and Fraser
kind of, you know, being being mainstays of that offensive
line for the next decade is very enticing.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
If they're the Castro Poalcy you know, those type of
dudes that just lifer Steelers.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
And even if.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Better Oh yeah, yeah, yeah exactly. I mean no, so
I think that's one of the most encouraging thing going
on with the team overall, you know, big picture stuff.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yes, no doubt, no doubt. Some of the journals down
on the sideline Matt are reporting that it looked like
a right hand injury for Will Howard, that he gave
a thumbs up as he was as he was leaving practice.
So hopefully nothing serious. All kind of precautionary there, but
as that.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Is a airmailed by Rudolph.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
By Rudolph to to Miles killerbrew there. But yeah, hope
that worries.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Me with Howard. I mean again, I don't want him recent.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Time in this set. You want him to play a
lot on Saturday night.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Down and also when you hear right hand throwing, oftentimes
that is hit off a helmet or something like that.
And maybe he's fine, who knows. You said he gave
a thumbs up or whatever. Hopefully it's not a big deal.
But it don't love hearing that in this type of
setting because he probably hit it on a helmet.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, and again this is just going off of what
we are total gut hearing from the reporters on the sidelines,
the people who are down there and keeping an eye
on these things. But what we do know is that
Will Howard did leave practice early and we've seen Skyler Thompson.
He's not back out there right now. We've seen Skyler
Thompson continue to work with the threes.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
That's a great point about Jacksonville, though. You want him
out there.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Even if it just hinders him for this week. Right
that's you know, that's maybe five series, six series in
a preseason game that he doesn't get to play, yes,
which is value for you know, it is not the
end of the world, but it's certainly valuable for a
guy like him at this stage in the game.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
But the plan, I mean, it's not like Rogers are
going to play. But I mean the plan was to
make him have the bulk of it on purpose, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Right, exactly exactly, so, Hey, hopefully all precautionary, All good,
We'll see him back out here.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Just walked off gingerly. No one's given him any attention though,
but he know something stepped on him.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, I was gonna say he kind of it seemed
like he kind of fell maybe awkwardly when he was
making a catch on that last rep there from from
Mason Rudolph is Mason now next to a good throat
to Max Herlaman on the near side sideline, been trying
to little everything gay he is, He's a he's an
interesting one.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
He's an interesting one.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
As I'm trying to keep an eye on the far side.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
In the middle of the state, I'm pretty sure, Hey.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
They produce some good football players out there, and in
central Pennsylvania area, they have a uh, they have a
disgruntled linebacker who plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
That right, No more news on that front, No.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
More news on that front. Who Saquon Barkley's from that area?

Speaker 3 (05:06):
That he's a Jersey guy?

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Is he?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
I think?

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Okay? I thought he was from Central PA.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
You might be right.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I don't know. Leshaw McCoy was from Central PA. Ohon
was born in the Bronx, So I think you are okay.
He graduated from high school in in in white in
Whitehall Township, which is like central Eastern p A. He
was was was born in New York City, New Jersey area. Uh.
Max Harlman and I'm trying to figure out where he

(05:34):
played his his high school football here, but I want
to say, he's like, a, yeah, where's his here? Here
we go, where's his Notre Dame? His Notre Dame? Oh,
he went to Wyo Missing High School.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
That's why I knew that that's where Ross Talker went
to school.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Is that where Ross Talker went to school?

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Yeah, it's where.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
It's where one of my college roommates, Nikki d Felice
with the schools. A big shout out to Nicky D
if he's listening right now.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Yeah, Ross went there. That's why I knew because before
he even signed I think with the Steelers, Ross at
him on his podcast is just a missing dude.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
That's cool.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
I think Eric. I think Alexai ANZELONEI played there too,
pretty sure.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
That's funny. Yeah, as did one of my college roommates.
How about that small world, Matt. You know, it all
gets back to Wyo missing. I guess at the end
of the day, uh As we still have some seven
on seven's going on in front of us. I've been
trying to deduce anything. The Marvin Leal is all excited
over there on the defensive line. I'm not sure exactly
who he was going up against on a on a rep.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
There probably was the right tackle, but I don't think
it was Falton.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, good rep there by Doug nestor on Ya Black.
Those two have been a lot of fun to watch
throughout camp. They've been going at it, those two.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
In a pretty good battle.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah. Is the offense matriculating their way down the field
here a little bit in front of us Skyler Thompson.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
A lot of Thompson. She came out kind of late,
but still he put it on where he needed to.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Good job by Rock Taylor to hold onto that one
after a little a little contact from Deshaun Elliott. Good
good good hold good snag. There.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Should note too that the pass rush drill that they're
doing on the far field is two on twos so
they're working on stunts and twists and things like that,
and yeah, good way to do it.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Communication for the offensive line.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah, how long do I hang on to you and
pass you off from all those type of things?

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Right?

Speaker 3 (07:21):
It doesn't mean they stunn or twist every time, but
you know, sure, sure.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Now you got to keep those guys, keep those guys
guessing right, keep them on the balls or their feet,
as they might say. As we'll have another rep here
for Skyler Thompson, looks like they might be done on
the far side of the field. I wonder if this
could mean the conclusion of practice and that one airmailed
one intended for JJ gallbreath.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
There came out of his hand. He knew that one.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
And you know what I think too, because I think
he knew that that was the last rep of practice.
I was like, I don't think that's how he wanted
to think. That's tough.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Like when you're playing pick there you shooting hoops by yourself.
You got to make your last shot exactly right.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Although I think we might have one more, they are
not done. No, So okay, chance at Red Empson here
upcoming in just a few minutes.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
For sky tom soon, because I was gonna say everybody
left field too.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
We've gotta get a fvital teams period here. I think perhaps.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
That's usually how they've been.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
And usually how they have been. Felton, who's kind of
standing in the middle of there, looking like he's ready
to get going. We'll see who else runs over. Oh yeah,
Aaron Rodgers is now huddling the boys up. It looks
like we are gonna have a little one on one
team period to end this thing. Matt, That's what I'm
talking about.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Nice, let's stick around, let's do it. Is that the
defensive two's out there while you're getting Sawyer, Queen's out there. Yeah,
the two interior defensive lineman Harmon and Bentn are out there.
So it's mostly ones. No Watt though, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
No Watt, No fine with that. No Ramsey, no high Smith,
as we've stated more than that, No Cam, Hayward, Cam.
But you've got the majority of others that you would
expect out there, Slay, Elliott and Thornhill, along with Brandon
eccles as your defensive backs. Still Queen and Wilson in
the middle of the field. Those guys getting a lot
of work together throughout it'll be le Al.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
And Sawyer be your edge.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Horman and Benton on the inside. Old boy, let's that'll be.
That'll be one to watch here on the interior this
offensive line. As Scottie Miller will move in motion. Aaron
Rodgers in the shotgun, takes a beat, now gets the
snap to give to Jaylen.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Wilson pretty quick by Wilson.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yes, Sawyer, Sawyer was there would have been on the
clean up for the tackle as uh that was that
was well read there by Peyton Wilson. He kind of
exploded downhill and didn't didn't give Jayalen Warren much room
to get going.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yeah, yeah, he saw that from the beginning.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Warren will check out, as will Roman Wilson, DK metcalf
in as is I believe gain Well. I want to
say we'll see here in just a second when they
break the huddle and they still have are now Washington
in there, Pat Fryer mouth as well, two as they

(10:06):
will break huddle here, Cam Hayward out there, so three
or Connor Hayward part of me. Three tight ends You've
got gain Well in the backfield. Aaron Rodgers under center,
metcalf alone wide out to the right, this mooth will
come in, tight.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Good protect.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Rogers back nice one to Metcalf or what would have
been about a nine to ten yard game.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
They were dropping Sawyer on that one. Who is no
match for Metcalf. Obviously that's a tough, tough cover.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
That's a tough cover.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
But he's getting help. Ye. Rogers read that. Quick ball
came out, good protection.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Well designed, well executed. Rogers will stay in still. Caleb
Johnson gonna check in. Roman Wilson gonna check in as well.
DK Metcalf will check out mooth Hayward. I believe Mount
Washington still in there, trying to.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
See far side.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Can't tell if that's Mount wasshing he's on the side. Okay,
so that's Broderick over there. All right.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
They look a lot alike they.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Really, it's says Georgia.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
You know, they all look they all look like.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Usually tight ends and tackles don't look the same.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Though, well, Darnell Washington does not look like many other
tight ends. As Connor Hayward moves in motion from left
to right, Rogers in the shotgun, Caleb Johnson to his left.
He gets the snap, looks left, gets rid of it.
Quickly out there for Scotty Miller. That'd have been a
short maybe three or four yard pick.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, but another quick read boom, get it out of
your hands, easy layup, yep.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Make the defensive back make a tackle in space, right yeah, yeah,
ash as it was Beanie Bishop on the coverage there,
I believe for the defense. And now Darnell Washington will
check in, Mason Rudolph will check out as well. Most
of the first team offense as well too. Offensive lines
will do some swapping as a O line runs some

(11:50):
gassers as they tend to do, and we will have
our first rep here with Mason Rudolph and what we
think might be this final period of practice. Robert Woods
in motion the give the sermon well blocked. He's able
to spin out of a move there and would have
been a nice pickup for a first down.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Yeah yeah, they could. Oh, line came off the ball
well there and move some people.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
That's what we've been looking to see. That's exactly what
we've been looking to see. And it looks like John
news Smith just walked off the field as well too,
man so with a trainer, So we will keep an
eye on that. Something to something of notes.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah, so we haven't seen a lot of him today.
I wonder what's going on with him.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
He was you were telling me that when I got
down here about fifteen minutes.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Ago, earlier than usual, and I was just sitting there.
He was on the drugs machine already and he's always
on the first ones to hit it after practice.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yeah, yeah, we'll see, Uh, that'll if he doesn't. I
was just thinking that same thing exactly right, Ryan Clark
and Jayalen Ramsey standing on the far side sideline about
the forty two yard line, chopping it up.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Like Bio missing Hurlman making a catch there.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
I'm going at the text nikkid and tell him we
were talking about him on the show today.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yea, as uh if he knows Ross.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Everybody knows Ross.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Come on.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
But yeah, Johnny Smith walking off the field with a trainer.
No one really aware of what exactly happened between. So
we're new, right, Yes, him and Howard uh exiting practice today?
And what was a physical one? What was an active one?
Without a doubt? I mean there's been a lot of
team periods here.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Matt, Yeah, there has absolutely has been a pretty spirited practice.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Got a lot of good work in at a lot
of thumping and bumping.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Yeah, a lot of people on the field too. Like
you said, team periods.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
Skyler Thompson doesn't check with me under center and bobbled
exchange there between between him and McCallum.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
I believe, Yes, I want to say to blame on that.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
I know, and they're kind of talking to each other now,
but yeah, it was McCallum in there, and that will
be it for those guys. Are we going to see
the first team jacket? All right? I was thinking about
getting to a break here, but not if the first
team's checking back in will stay for a few.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
More minutes, maybe they're gonna end it.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Maybe this is I think that that's a safe bet.
As we're approaching now about we're about two hours and
fifteen minutes into practice, two hours and twenty minutes in practice,
so I would think that this is is coming down
the home stretch here of the of the final phase
of everything is the ones have checked back in. Mike
Tomlin barking out some instructions of what he wants to
see here in these in these final few minutes.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Must be something he wants to see.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
I think he was kind of talking to some of
the coaches and I think being pretty pretty direct about
what he wanted here in these final minutes. Abso it'll
be ones on ones back checking in here, same same
cast that you've heard from the defense and Nickel.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Form the first and ten. I wonder if this is
going to be a true drive you know where they
move the chains. Yeah, get him forty yards you.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Know it, maybe two minutes drill type thing.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
There could be two minutes going on. That's the thing is,
you're it could be situational. Hey, you're down to you
need a field goal, there's fifty seconds and you go
one time out. Whatever it is. We don't know the specifics.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Rogers is in the shotgun working at the forty yard
line in a first and ten quick pass to move
for about a six yard game.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
It's definitely hurry up.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
It is definitely hurry up, and the off move is
going here.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
Yeah. So the second second.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Four yep, Rogers will continue to work out of the
Shaka no huddle, going quickly here over the middle, looking
now dump one off to warn nice catch there, and
that's gonna depend on where they say Beanie Bishop had him,
but they're gonna mark them past.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
That's he's weird spot those type of things. But Warren
cuts the inside there instead of going out of bounds.
But he got the.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
First yep, exactly right. So first down here now at
the forty eight yard line and plus territory, Rogers finds
mouth again and he's got some space.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Yeah, that one gonna pick up. TJ pushed the pocket
nicely there, he did. Yeah, Helly's pass rushers aren't worried
about run.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
No, that one picked up about fifteen sixteen yards. The
Steelers all of a sudden in business at the thirty
yard line with another first and ten. Rogers moving quickly,
looking left and threw a little side arm Oh my goodness,
yeah to Jalen Warren kind of faked like he was
going over the middle to mooth and flicked it out
to the side that's.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
At his waist level.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, there's three or four guys in the world that
can do that. And that one picks up about a
five yard gain, six yard gain on first down. Rogers
again moving quickly here, nothing going and he's under pressure
and so he'll just throw that at the feet of
Jalen Warren. That was an impressive pass there.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Matt clearly they got the clock running here because they're
very aware.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
Yeah, yes they are. And even with an incomplete pass there,
they're still trying to simulate this like they're like they're
hurrying up.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
I mean, this is Rogers wheel house. This is one
hundred yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Yeah, And he's moving DK and and and moving around.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Those A clock stops so he doesn't have to rush, right, Yeah, yep.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Taking some time here at the line of scrimmage to
get his guys in the right place. Stilling shotgun with
Jalen Warren to his right, trips wide receivers to his
right as well. He's looking that way. He'll throw it
over the deflected and intercepted. Brandon eccles gets a hand
on that one in front of Roman Wilson and it's
picked off by Wan Thornhill.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Blame Robert Rogers on that one on first. Yeah, I
mean that really threaded between two dudes. That was a
through the keyhole tight yle talking and it looked like
it was on target. It wasn't a poorly rown ball,
but some one of the two d bacs got a
hand on it and went popped up in the air
and the safety grab so after a they probably pretty

(17:09):
encouraging thing now with the twos, I think so, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
Yeah, pretty encouraging start there for Aaron Rodgers in the
first team. But the defense able to make a play
and get off the field.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
So the other thing, and then we've mentioned this throughout camp.
That doesn't mean he would try that in a game, correct,
you know, like you've often the limits here, you know, like,
can we get that. I'm not going to just dirt
it there. If I can give it a shot, you
don't lose. If that's Week three against whoever. That doesn't
mean that he makes that throw. Who knows, right, But

(17:40):
it wasn't a bad throw. It's just there was also
a nice defense. I mean someone got a hand in there.
So now we got the two's doing the same thing
here on first and ten.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Yep, good protection Skyler Thompson in and not Mason Rudolph here.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
For two or three yards there. I think the defense
is happy with that.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Yeah, quick little outa will out of bounds and now
it'll be about a second and seven for the offense.
Thompson back quickly.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Interesting, it's not Rudolph downfield?

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Yeah, I think so. In a nice completion there to
Hurlman for about a twenty yard game. Rudolph is he's
out there, he's walking behind that. Yeah, it doesn't look
like he's banged.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Went straight to the threes and it looks like both
teams are you know what now.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
That you mentioned that, I think you are correct, and
if you're looking at the offensive line as well too.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
So big completion though by Thompson there the last.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Play, nice nice ball over the middle to Hurlman for
about a twenty yard game. And he just caught another
one for about five six yards down the left side.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
I know Notre Dame. People love that guy. Do it
all types?

Speaker 2 (18:41):
So do WI missing people. Yeah, Thompson now will point
to his head, bark out some signals. He's got gain
well to his left in the shotgun. He's going to
go quickly to the right to Connor Hayward able to
wiggle his way into some space there, move the chains.
That would have been about a six yard game. Now
they're going to be inside the red zone here with
a fresh set of downs.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
What's on the clock and how much I'm out to yet?

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Absolutely it was few days of practice they had the
clock turned this way. But now again we can't see
it as a nice pass there over the middle to
Parliament is all over the place, and that one's gonna
be down to about the two yard line for about
a three yard line, they'll say, for a seventeen yard game.
Now we'll see if this offense can finish off the
drive here. They've been getting good protection up front so far.

(19:24):
A couple hands on the hips for the defense, Matt.
They got them right where they want them.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Yeah, play at this tempo.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Thompson now back again, looking quickly. He thought about dumping
at the Hayward instead looks to the right side for
gain Well, and did he get him? I think he
got him? That was part of me. But are they
saying he was just short?

Speaker 3 (19:42):
I don't think he got in coming back, and I
think he went.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
Kind of fell the pile, fell on his key stir
before the pylon there. So we'll see here, maybe one
last one last play to see if they can finish
it off with a touchdown. Although there's some cute confusion
about the personnel now out on the field. Let's see
here Hurlaman will check out.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
But he was out of bound. So the clock did stop.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Clock did stop? Yes, So now they have the ball
spotted at the one yard line. It'll be second in
goal from the one, and that's what it was. It was,
let's bring in the let's bring in the goal line
offense here and see if we can punch this thing in.
Although they will continue to operate in a shotgun with
Kenneth Gainwell, J. J. Gallbreath the tight end still Skyler

(20:30):
Thompson in the gun snap back looking left, looking throwing,
and that one to reflect at the line of scrimmage.
Not sure who got it. I think that's who I
was thinking as well too. I think it might have
been for Hoko at least he was kind of in
the middle of it there. Yeah, all right, third down

(20:52):
now here at the one before we go to break,
we'll see if the offense can finish off this drive
and what will likely be the final moments of practice
here for your Pittsburgh Steelers on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon,
rolling into the evening here, that's Saint Vincent College. Sun's out,
a little bit little beautiful, a little less cloud cover
than we've had throughout practice. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous August

(21:15):
day here and here we go, third and goal from
the one yard line. They will stay in shotgun, but
a tight formation looking left, Thompson has the ball nothing
well defended, able to get one away, but defended well
there by Chuck Clark.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
Was all only his guy could get.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
It, but would have been a tough catch, but was
a throw was where it needed to be. But Chuck
Clark was all over that one. And so here we
go for all the marbles. Matt Williams going forward on fourth,
I guess more than three. Yes, I think that's I
think that's safe to assume as well. And so we'll
see who gets final bragging rights here. As practice nears,

(21:59):
it's conclusion in the shotgun empty set five wide here
for fourth and one for Skyler Thompson and Mike Tomlin's
gonna blow it dead. Didn't like something that he saw.
I don't know if that was all the defense. Maybe
the defense took a time out. He doesn't look like
he's upset or about anything or anything, but this is

(22:19):
clearly something there that they said, let's let's let's reset this. Yeah,
I don't know if.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
It's saw a look on a key play. Okay, that's
what you want to go to. I'm gonna call my
time out and adjust I'm guessing that's how they handled it.
But Tomlin in this case isn't on either team, so
he's calling it.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
He was in the offensive backfield, now he is behind
the end zone. Gonna take this in from almost like
a safety position, if you will, And here we go.
Now they will go under center. Oh nope, never mind,
gonna go. They were bunched under center. Now they'll audible
to five wide spread out Skyler Thompson in the shotgun
again for all the marbles, for all the marbles, for

(22:59):
the lobster file. In the dining room, Thompson takes a snap,
quick hitting well and he dropped it. Oh he had it.
Kenneth Gainwell had it right in his bread basket, but
he dropped it.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Matt perfect ro out, good throw and probably the guy
you want to throw to if you're the threes. I mean,
that's a trust trustible guy and just couldn't hol it
in get him right in the numbers.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
After a very solid practice for Kenneth's.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Defense got both offs, even though they ended up giving
up a lot of yards and got their back against
the wall. But when a matter most on the last play,
defense came up big on both those drives.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
Then, but don't break right.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
So I thought they were good offensive drives. I did too, right,
I thought they were should be happy with things. The
end result they wasn't.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
There though, plenty to be encouraged about. But yeah, all Swedish,
no finish there from the offense. You see what I
did there. Let's get to a rap. Let's get to
a break here. That is a wrap on practice. We'll
give some final practice thoughts, tell you about what's going
on down on the field. Get to our around the
league segment, this replay or this measurement technology that we
have to discuss plenty to get to here in the

(23:59):
final half hour of the program. Will do that as
we roll along. Westshuler and Matt Williamson live here at
Training Camp. It's a special edition of The Drive on
Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (24:17):
Iheartradios. Live coverage Job Not twenty twenty five Steelers Training

also brought to you by First National Bank, by Kalucy Chevrolet,

and by us.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
Steel Another practice in the books for your Steelers. Just
five more now or part of me four more now
remaining in this twenty twenty five training camp Whens Day
Tomorrow August sixth, then Thursday the seventh. Of course, Friday
will be an off day as the team will travel

(25:07):
to Jacksonville for that first preseason game, and then an
off day Sunday as well, and then back next week
for a pair of practices and that will be it, Matt.
It all happens quick out.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Here, Yeah, it really does, and sometimes it feels like
a grind and all that, but it's a lot of
action and a lot of stuff happening in rapid fire.
And felt like today was that way. You know. The
practice was practice was long, but they got a lot
in and there was a lot of reps taken and
a lot of tape to evaluate for these coaches, and

(25:39):
a lot of tempo. It was not much sitting around
at all. And you know, we did of a couple,
as always, a couple of starred guys that weren't out
there Ramsey et cetera. But you know there's hurlman out
there catching passes. Now, you'd a good day, you know,
I mean there was a lot of guys had good days,
and I thought the offense responded well, which is how
we opened the show. You know, when do you start
to worry? I said, Well, today's kind of pivotal when

(26:00):
they stepped up.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
I worry less after today.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Yeah, exactly about the offense.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, absolutely, no, I I perhaps I think their finest
day of camp, not even perhaps, I think it was
their finest day of camp so far. Today. Uh did
if you if you missed it, if you're just joining
us or or or something like that. Will Howard exiting
practice early, John Smith exiting practice early as well too.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
Smith didn't practice high.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
Smith did not practice. Good news. Joey Porter Junior was
back out there today, limited capacity. Yeah, you know, exactly right.
It's good for a lot of a lot of reps
today for Eccles and Beanie Bishop and and James Pierre and.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
Your new buddy.

Speaker 2 (26:40):
Yeah that's right, Derren Porter as well too. So yeah,
there was a lot to like you said, a lot
going on, a lot to deduce I think from today's practice,
certainly as still some work being had here in front
of us, Troy Faltanu and Cam Hayward doing a little
little coaching, little instruction down there in front of us.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Has uh I got a kick out here in the
forty five yard line. They were the outside linebacker coach
with Watt and all the all those dudes are. We
were working on basically Watt's patented move, that that ghost
move swipe move thing that he has going that. They
were all doing it and basically just following his lead. Yeah,

(27:20):
he's better at than all of them. But even like
Cam Hayward was out there fiddling around with it, he
didn't even try, like instead of doing the ghost move side,
he did a spin and came inside on it. Yeah, right,
just kind of yeah, but hey, let's just spend ten
minutes all of us just working on one move.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
Absolutely, and hey, success leaves clues, and TJ. Watt has
certainly had plenty of success. Yeah, he was a good guy.
Good guy to be following around out here without a doubt.
H Matt, what do you say?

Speaker 3 (27:46):
These machines are getting plenty of attentions.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
As they always are. Yeah, no doubt. I'll tell you
what you could could have probably twenty jugs machines down there.
They would still Yeah, they were always wanting us.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
Got some good work down here too, I mentioned with Hurlman,
but a lot of the quarterback stuff, uh just first
air that throws some deep balls for the last twenty
minutes or so. Yep, Aaron Is, h Rogers and Rudolf
were both out there working.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
Throwing some to Hurlaman and Rock Taylor and DK Metcalf
here in front of us right now, offensive lineman working
on some stuff down towards the red zone.

Speaker 3 (28:19):
That's always a cmal who's coaching.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yeah it is. He gets with all these guys and
talks about hand placement and all that good stuff. And
he's he's certainly he's certainly giving it back out there.
Isaac Sayallo is like every day after practice, it seems
like he's working with one of these one of these
young offensive linemen. Which is great to see Matt little
around the league. For a few minutes here for you
before we get to our final break.

Speaker 3 (28:43):
Look at this little dude out there. I think he's
a friarmoth, this little guy at the thirty five. Oh yeah,
I go into the forty all he's on a foot
and a half tall, just run running down that red
line right down the middle. He's having a good time.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Nobody, I mean, no one's down, you know, just like hey, yeah,
keep running here.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
You're fine, You're good. That's funny.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
I wonder if it's like a little cousin or family
member or something of it.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
He's like anybody watching me friar moves like get back here.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
He's like what He's like, no, Oh, that's hilarious, Like
that's so far away. Why would I want to run
all the way.

Speaker 3 (29:18):
Down the long practice. I don't want to go get him.
The kids having a blast.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Oh that's the best. The security guards like, hey, buddy,
why don't you you want to run back down the
other way?

Speaker 3 (29:28):
There we go. You're staying right down the red line though.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
Oh fantastic. I love it is that Scotty Miller coming
over to grab him.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
So I wonder if maybe I think they sent someone
to go do go deal with do somebody's dirty work. Boom,
I'm not coming back.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
It's like, no, I'm not going back. It just throws
himself down at the forty yard line.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
I know if that's Miller's kid or Moose kid or what.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
But I yesterday Matt went to pick up the girls
from school, yeah, from daycare, and they've I could tell
they've gotten very used to mommy picking him up the
last couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
While woh okay, dad's been because.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
My youngest Claire, who's a little little you know, almost
two and a half here, getting close to two and
a half. When I opened the door out to the
playground with their daycare to pick her up, she saw
me and she threw herself on the ground like that
little hit just no one more. I was like, that's great, that.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
Really makes it felt so.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Excited to see me. I've been gone basically the last
two weeks. Early, you haven't been missing me. A couple
couple around the thing around the league. Things to run
past you here. Man found this interesting. Zach Taylor, of course,
Bengals head coach, spoke to the media this morning and
he said that Joe Burrow and other big name players
will play several series on Thursday night in their preseason

(30:41):
opener and more in Game two against the Commanders. He's
got a new way of doing things with eyes on
starting fast this season.

Speaker 3 (30:49):
It's noteworthy because.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Don't do the definition of insanity thing r right.

Speaker 3 (30:54):
I mean every year they run it back and Taylor's defense.
There's been a couple of pre seasons where Burrows had
like a kidney. I mean, there was like a couple
of things that he couldn't do things. Yes, but they
are such a notorious slow starting team, and he got
to think it reflects from just not playing anybody in
the preseason at least do something. And I didn't even

(31:16):
put two and two together on that, but a week ago.
We're not real. But I'm going to use the word
excited for the Hall of Fame game on Thursday. Now,
We're gonna have like actually real preseason games in two days,
you know, So that's good stuff.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
Hey, if Joe Burrow is playing on Thursday night, right right.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
Right, I'm watching that, watching that Stars playing in two days, which.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Is music to our ears. Yeah, Williams. And speaking of
Stars playing in two days, not quite two days, but
maybe Saturday, the Steelers will get their first crack at
Travis Hunter. Yeah there first, that's a little exciting thing
that I hadn't really nominally thought about. Yeah, me too.
I think he is the one guy you take quarterback
out of the equation, right, like, because if I had

(31:58):
the first pick is the Steelers, I would probably take
a cam Ward I think, right. But but after that, uh,
that would have been Travis Hunter and it so their
official depth chart just came out today, their first depth
chart for the Jaguars, and again grain Assault With all this,
he's listed as a starting receiver and a backup corner
on their first depth chart, and he's been kind of

(32:19):
every other day of practice, going with wide receivers, going
with the defensive backs, going with wide receivers, going with
the defensive backs.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
From what I understand, he's had more reps at receiver.
But they are making a heavy D day, heavy old day,
heavy D day.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
Yes, So if you're Liam Cohen, if you're Jacksonville, is
it like a let's get him out there on both
sides of the ball in preseason? We're still feeling this
out or do you think in their mind they have
already a real this is how much we're gonna use
them on offense, this is how much we're gonna use
them on defense? Or is there still some of that
to be deduced by preseason.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
I mean, when you trade up in the draft and
give you I assume they had a plan of Okay,
not only do we love this guy, but we're gonna
implement his snaps and his meeting and people don't think
about the meeting room stuff, you know, like you go
to the corner rooms, you go to the receiver room,
and you know, so that kind of place. Yeah, at

(33:12):
the college level, he had no problem from a Stamino standpoint,
doing both. But he wasn't a super developed route runner,
you know. I mean so I think, and and even
the corner stuff, he could just get away with being
the best player out there. Boy, he's special. I don't know.
I used to think maybe he only does both in

(33:35):
a specialized manner, like every third down he's out there,
every red zone, he's out there on both sides of
the ball. But I tend to think as his career
moves along that he'll probably lean towards one towards the
other much heavier. And I bet it's wide receiver.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
I was gonna say, from his standpo, Yeah, there's more,
there's more of a financial incentive, but the wide receiver position.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
And I definitely watched more of his receiver reps than
corner reps in college. But I think he's got a
chance to be a top five receiver. And I'm not
saying he can't do that a corner either, but I mean,
if you can put him and Thomas out there, Lawrence,
that could be better than chasing Higgins in a year
or so. I mean what Thomas did as a rookie

(34:21):
was phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
Oh, he was outstanding.

Speaker 3 (34:22):
Yeah, so I would be super excited about that. And
I hope he plays a little bit.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
I hope he does too. It sounds like it sounds
like he's gonna play a little bit on Saturday. I'd
be very, very excited to get to see him in person,
because I'm with you. I thought he was so much
fun to watch in college.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
Even like warm ups. You might get a kick out
of just watching, you know, Let's see how he moves,
and I mean, I think he's a special player.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
Let's see where he's lying an eye, what's he doing
with the wide receivers, what's he doing with the DB's. Yeah,
I'm with you too.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
The plans hard to devise, though, I mean, if you're
the coaching staff, you' where's he at every minute every day?
Who knows?

Speaker 2 (34:55):
And because again, like you don't want to become the
jack of all trades and the master of none. No,
you'd rather nail him down at one thing and have
him be great at it than have him be okay
at two things.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
Yes, and even if it's just like boy, he doesn't
understand our own coverage concepts that well, but he's an
awesome man corner. That's tremendous. I mean, that's the hardest
thing to find. But then the offense knows you're probably
playing man when he's out there. I mean, like the
opponents are smart too.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
They sure are, especially once you get a few weeks
into the season and all that out there could be
tells totally totally all right, before we go to our.

Speaker 3 (35:31):
Runs three different routes, you know, like decordinators will pick
him by that.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
Okay, you know, final kind of note before we go
to break here, Mike Tomlin, just speaking to wrap up practice.
A couple updates for you. Will Howard hand injury is
being evaluated. Happened on an exchange.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
That's better than hitting helmet. Okay, so we'll take that.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
John new Smith left with some knee soreness and appears
to be less significant.

Speaker 3 (35:58):
Okay, that's good news.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Okay, hopefully you know, just precautionary needs, a little sore,
you know, maybe it fell awkwardly or.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
And they tell these guys, especially the veterans and the
people making money than a veteran on the block that hey,
if you feel anything, just get out.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Yeah right, totally. Uh And then no, no new news
on alex Higsmith, just just business business as usual, no
continuing to.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
I didn't think Yeah, I didn't think we would. Then
I assume he'll be ruled out for the Jags game
the night before too or whatever, because I'm not even
sure if they planned on planning he was one hundred.

Speaker 2 (36:28):
I think you're I think you're spot on there. Yeah,
I think you're spot on there all right, final break
to get.

Speaker 3 (36:33):
Here feels like something we'll be talking about in two weeks. Yeah,
that's what closed a day.

Speaker 2 (36:37):
Or two, which is unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
But I think you're right. That doesn't mean you should
assume the worst.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
Right, Yeah, yeah, that too. But again with guys like that,
slow roll it, take your time. It's it's barely August here,
We've got we've got plenty more meat on the bone ahead.
That's that's much more important than some preseason games in Jacksonville.
That's for sure, got to get to our final break.
We come back on the other side, I do want
to take a look, just for a few minutes at
this new one, new virtual measurement that's coming to the

(37:05):
National Football League, the Hawkeye technology that's going to be
measuring first down starting in the preseason. How it will
be presented to the fans in the stadium, the fans
at home, all that different stuff. I got a little
inside scoop here from the league for us that we'll
dig into and discuss as we close things down on
the other side. Give you a final wrap up of
everything happening down here on the field as well too.

(37:28):
As Roman Wilson and DK Metcalf and Pat Fryarmouth have
been cranking along on the on the jugs machine down
there's still plenty going on. We'll put a bow on
everything when we return on the other side. Matt Williamson
west Huler special edition of the Drive here on campus
as we head towards the evening time in Lake Trow, Pennsylvania.
It's all part of our ongoing training camp coverage on

(37:48):
Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio.

Speaker 1 (37:51):
Network, Iheartradios Live cover. Rachel Got twenty twenty five Steelers
training Camp. He's presented by Fadex where now meets Next
and also brought to you by First National Bank, by
Kalucy Chevrolet, iron Workers Union Number three, by Easy Home

(38:15):
Exteriors by SNT Bank, Remax Select Realty, by Tons Appliances,
the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop, by Always Safe Flagging and
Traffic Control and buy us Steel.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Final segment here of the drive today, another practice in
the books for your Pittsburgh Steelers. Still still a little
media stuff, little autographic stuff happening down on the field,
but mostly cleared out and quiet at this point. Man
working out at this point, Yeah, all the all the jugs,
machines have been put away, all.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
That think these guys came out here a little before too.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Hey did. It's a long, long, long day, certainly, but
a good practice. It was best for the offense to
this point that the offensive line finally looked better. Roman
Wilson I thought had his best practice. Aaron Rodgers might
have had his best practice as well too. A lot
to like out there.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
Today, Yeah, absolutely. It was a nice response to probably
some criticism over this day off of the offense. And
I'm not worried about the defense or anything of that sort.
But I think we're going to have a competitive next
few days.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
Yeah, yeah, I think that's a great way to put it.
I'm with you on that, Matt. Before we get out
of here in just a few minutes.

Speaker 3 (39:21):
Yeah, I'm curious about this.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
I received a booklet of information. I got the PowerPoint
presentation from the NFL on the new Hawkeye virtual measurement
technology that we'll be working for first downs, first down
measurements starting in the preseason. Not touchdowns, just first downs. Okay, yeah,
just first downs. So here's what I got. Six ultra

(39:44):
high definition cameras will be arranged along one side of
the stadium in order to provide full coverage of the
field for line to gain measurements. A single camera is
capable of producing an accurate measurement within a fraction of
an inch well. However, the sixth camera system is designed
to have redundant camera coverage of the cameras in all
areas of the field. Now, it's important to note this

(40:05):
virtual measurement system strictly uses cameras in optical tracking. There
are no lasers or sensors within the ball, which was
surprising to me.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
I figured that would be a chip and a laser.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Right, did you say hockey?

Speaker 2 (40:18):
Similar and now similar? But it's goal line technology as
opposed to first down technology. But I think still the
same type of thing, but like there's a sensor in
the puck that can tell you if it goes over
the line or not. In soccer, there's a sensor in
the ball that can tell you, Like if you watch
the World Cup and there's a goal line clearance, like
the ref will go over and look and they can

(40:39):
see like did the ball cross the line the.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
Entire way for a goal?

Speaker 2 (40:43):
But they'll be like a signal thing that goes off
to tell the referee to come and take a look
at it because it was a goal, you know, Like
they'll look at their watch and they'll be like, wait,
that's a goal and they got to go confirm and everything.
But that will not be the case with this.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
No, people a thousand times smarter than me are doing this.
But I'm curious why they took thisroach as opposed to that.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
I would like to know that as well too, that
no lasers or sensors within the ball are involved. So
it's a four step process of completing the virtual measurement,
and they're saying that it can all be done in
approximately thirty seconds. First step is the live image from
each camera is captured and processed accurately identifies and tracks
the field lines you know, in each instance. Once the

(41:24):
ball is officially spotted, the operator uses the measurement tool
in the system that can virtually confirm the front and
back tips of the football for measurement. Then the operator
will confirm first the location of the most recent spotted
ball and then second the spotted ball location from the
first play of the most recent set of downs. So

(41:45):
once both of those are confirmed, the system uses both
ball positions to compute the total yardage gained and then
that calculated you know, yardage achieved is displayed along with
the ball and the operator confirms the result, and the
virtual measurement is then generated and sent to use for
the broadcast and on the in stadium jumbo tron. So

(42:06):
if you look here, you will see these pictures and
I'll try and paint the best of it. Yeah, if
it's any part of the ball is over the line,
it's a first down break the planes breaking the play situation, which,
to be fair, is different than hockey and soccer where
the ball has to cross the entire goal line and
then if it's short, it'll tell you exactly by how short.
So how many tell you we are three inches short

(42:28):
or you're fourth and three? Yeah, the note card the
one time you know, like you are.

Speaker 3 (42:33):
Zero point three.

Speaker 2 (42:36):
So that'll I mean, like that'll basically be it is.
You will have this four step process.

Speaker 3 (42:42):
Doesn't take minutes and minutes like you said, it's thirty.

Speaker 2 (42:44):
Proximately from that's from start to finish time, approximately just
thirty seconds. I have to imagine we'll see this tested
a lot during the prea the preseason, like any situation
where it's close. I imagine they'll be like, let's take a look,
so get as many reps and as much experience doing that.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
I assume there's still a chain gang.

Speaker 2 (43:01):
I believe that there is still a chain gang for
certain situations where they can't because like what if it's
a touch push situation and you're never gonna see where
that I mean, you know that's where you think, like
that's a problem every year, and then it becomes a
judgment call of where it gets spotted and.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
I've always laughed too, Like the chain gang part to
me is hilarious, but also twenty two huge human beings
are in this huge scrum, and this fellow from the
sideline runs out and says, the ball is here, you know, right,
Like I still think that's a little insane, you know,
like a touch push situations dead on, And I don't

(43:37):
know how that gets better. I know there would be
a chip in the ball somehow that tells you, but
then someone has to know when the ball was down right,
you know, I don't know, I don't know if we're
talking about tiny things here.

Speaker 2 (43:47):
But still, and this is not like a robot umpire
and baseball situation where like you could very easily have
a defined strike zone and you could get it right
every time. Like, there's still gonna be a lot of
gray area, yes, of where exactly the ball is, spot it.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
And all that. So I'm sure this will be far
from perfect, but better.

Speaker 2 (44:03):
I'm hoping that this is a starting point that you know, yeah,
three four years from now, we're looking back and it's
the technology has expanded to you don't need a chain gang,
you don't need goal line reviews. You know, it becomes
a very seamless process is kind of the baseline.

Speaker 3 (44:17):
Of it all. Like the Jumbo sean just lights up green.
If you got it right, exactly right, now, exactly right,
there we go first and yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
That that that, to me, I think is hopefully the
ultimate evolution. But that'll be another thing for us to
all keep an eye on. It's a little overdue when
these preseason games. You're right, it does see archaic that
a billion dollar league still has you know, a bunch
of a bunch.

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Of bunch of old man, bunch of old men with the.

Speaker 2 (44:39):
Chains in their hands trying to trying to decide if
Jalen Hurts got across the first down marker or not.
That'll do it for today's show, Matt, good stuff, good practice.
I enjoyed this practice. I hope we get more of
the same tomorrow. But for now, plenty in the books,
uh to take away from today. That will do it
for Matt and I A big thanks to our producer
Justin back at the Ranch for holding it down for us.

(45:01):
Our coverage begins tomorrow at ten am on another busy
day here on campus. For Matt Williams and I'm Wesheeler.
Take care everybody, we'll talk to you soon. As always,
you know where to find us. It's on your twenty
four to seven home of the Black and Gold. It's
