Speaker 1 (00:05):
iHeartRadio's live coverage of about twenty twenty five Steelers training
camp is presented by FedEx where Now meets Next, and
also brought to you by bud Light, Independence Health System,
by Pennsylvania One Call System, by Live Casino, Calciente Pizza
and Drafthouse by Don's Appliances, South Hills Auto, Laurel, Highlands

(00:29):
Visitors Bureau, Wemax, Select Realty, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop,
and by US Steel.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Mason Rudolph. A dangerous past that was almost intercepted, maybe
should have been intercepted by Beingie Bishop as to nobody's
surprise as well, Matt, just a moment before we came
back from break. Why a black getting a hand on
the football. Yeah, we haven't seen much of that yet
this camp.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I big grizzly at the lion of scrimmage, just swatting
things down, or like King Kong on top of a building,
swatten down plains chruck. Clark had a really nice clothes
on the football too while we were a break, And
I see, like I say his name every practice, you know,
I think that's gonna be a quality edition, quality edition. No,
Pete ends up being another one those training camp edition

(01:14):
veteran guys that maybe have a little something some issue
going on in their career late in their career, but
then decide and they're ready to go and healthy and get.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Him in here, s Fred left on the tire's out
there now. Actually, he sure is.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Checking in it at left tackle once again.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Looks like he's gonna do battle. Leao.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
I don't exactly remember what the parameters were around tunching
Wolf's camp. Pheno him like, did you have to be undrafted?
Did you you know?

Speaker 4 (01:38):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I don't remember exactly what the parameters were, but why
a black.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Might be just jumped early?

Speaker 2 (01:42):
He did. Blacksmen might be in that conversation.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
As uh.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Mason Rudolph finds Connor Hayward to the right. There for
a quicker part of me, not Mason rudlf Scholer Thompson,
excuse me, findes quick little game there, Pete working on
Leale doing a pretty good job and a nice pass
Thompson over the middle to Ben's scronic. They working a
little hurt two minutes or hurry up drill towards the

(02:13):
end of practice here, so we will continue to bring this.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Pull yourself out.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, him and him and Leale right at each other.
Here man in a deep pass down the field, caught,
but I don't think he got both feet In Rock Taylor,
he's saying touchdown. Look our buddy Chris Carter's in the
end zone. They're signaling no touchdown underneath the goalpost.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Do you think he is?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Hey, Cee, Cee, you're not a reference here, all right,
calm yourself down.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Pete just came back in and I was wondering what's
going on there. I didn't know if he wanted to
Breathe checked out for one play.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
He does have his hand on his hips and.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
Yeah, yeah, he probably hasn't done this so long.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Big difference between you know, been in camp for for
two weeks now as opposed to just getting back out here.
He's had no acclamation period.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yet, No nothing like, hey, go out there and do
your thing. Not like he's playing a ton of wraps.
But I bet he's feeling it.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Absolutely absolutely. He'll be lined up against a woosh Off
and Harper here now as it looks like the defense
maybe showing some blitz picked up nicely, Thompson gets rid
of it. Nice completion, good completion, fourne falling down there,
Rock Taylor able to contort his body and bring that
one in right in front of coach Tomlin. Because now

(03:24):
the offense will work with a first and goal from
about the four yard line Thompson and off and touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
I think that was pretty clean.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
And that will be the end of that team period
and with that matter, might see the end of practice
here today, as it does appear to be the case.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
So pretty strong feeling.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
That's a wrap about a two hour and fifteen minute
practice for the Steelers. Good work out there today, a
lot of physicality in the churches.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
I didn't see any like fights are bat The offensive
defense can be more friendly towards you each other today,
and we're getting along and joking and all those things.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
But doesn't mean they weren't working hard.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yeah, no, No, there.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Was some good trench stuff on the second field.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
I thought there was some really good stuff on that
second field, And like I said, one of those moments
where we wish we could kind of be down there
in the action, but we're able to get a pretty
solid view of it from this side of the aisle.
Mike Tomlins got the boys gathered about the twenty five
yard line for some final words and thoughts here, and
you're right. I mean the guys are a little chummy

(04:28):
with each other.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, everyone's kind of happy, like, okay, we're getting on
a plane here soon.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Roger is shaking hands with some of the defensive line.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
A lot of smiles, a lot.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Of smiles down there.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
Last time on this field for a while.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I think you're right, last time on this field for
what four days? And we get to get on a
plane and go south and go hit somebody who's not
wearing black and gold. Sounds like a plan.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. So let's just get a good practice in,
let's get better. We only need to fight and battle
it out and then take that isle on Jacksonville.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Absolutely absolutely, And if you missed it, Jacksonville sounds like
we're going to see most of their starters, Trevor Lawrence
gonna play, Travis Hunter gonna play now again. Can't imagine
that it will be large sample sizes, but we are
at least going to see a little bit of those
guys in the new look Jacksonville Jaguarars with new head
coach Liam Cohen Motes his buddy Liam Cohen, Have I

(05:16):
told you that connection they played against So Liam Cohen
played at UMass, Motes played at JMU, So they played
against each other all four years of college's.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
They're in the same conference.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, and and they were both as you can imagine,
kind of like the All Conference you know, like the
the studs of the FCS schools, if you will. Like
I think Liam Cohen was like the quarterback of the
year and Motes was the Buck Buchanan, which is, you know,
the defensive defensive player of the year.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
And so they're probably like awards banquets.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
They were an awards banquets together. They did a lot
of combine training together. Like Motes told me a story
that one time Liam Cohen he was supposed to go
visit Houston, I think it was or somebody like that,
and he overslept his lot arm and missed his ride,
and so Motes drove him to the airport and Motes
was like, I went one hundred and twenty miles an
hour to the airport and got him to his flight

(06:07):
on time, and got him to his interview with the.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
His work out with the Houston didn't different.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Houston didn't know any different. And uh and so yeah,
new new look Jacksonville Jaguars there with Liam Cohene, of course,
former offensive coordinator the Bucks coming over.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
I don't know if Cohen ended up ever sticking with
the team as a play I don't think he really did, right,
I mean, he's a coach, but he's had he's.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
And again for still being I mean, I don't think
he's even forty yet. I think, no, he's ahead of
the game a curve with thirty eight, thirty seven, thirty
nine years old. He's got an impressive resume for for
being that, for being that young.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
And h he did a tremendous job with Tampa Bay
last year. And you know, Tampa, this is second year
in a row Tampa's lost an offensive coordinator to become
a head coach.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
Right Yeah, And you immediately thought there would be.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
A drop off going from a coordinator that just became
a head coach to Cohen. And it might have even
gotten better with him. I mean Baker's development. They used
Mike Evans in a wider variety of manners. Their offensive
line became one of the best in the league. It's
a good organization in Tampa and they're they're pumping out
a lot of good products and Jacksonville needs it. I

(07:11):
mean they've been kind of struggling for stability for a
long time.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yes, yes, I completely completely agree with you on that.
And yeah, it's felt like a couple of times like
they've been ready to turn a corner and maybe it
just ended up being the call to sack right and
they're right back where they started.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
You know, they have a lot of off seasons where
they spend a lot of money on free agents, and
usually it's too much. There's a trend there of Okay,
we signed four or five big free agents and then
a year or two later you cut three of them.
You know, that type of thing is not great business.
And too many head coaches many, Yeah, it just keeps going,
you know, going through those guys, and the biggest key

(07:50):
and then the biggest reason for the hire is, hey,
we just gave Laurence a bunch of money. We know
that he was a big time prospect. First overall, pick
got to get him right. And if that means traded
up for Travis Hunter, okay, you know, and getting a
new coach. I mean that's the whole goal of the organization.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Kind of similar to like the Chicago Courts.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Going down here in the forty yard line. There's this
banner that everybody's signing. Oh yeah, yeah, I'm not sure Steelers.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, maybe one of the kids or somebody on the sideline,
but yeah, that is pretty cool as.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Uh, you don't see that on the field a lot.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Like yeah, like bringing something over, that.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Homemade banner that a bunch of them are signing.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Yeah, for all the for all the guys to sign
it looks like slaves gonna come over and give a
little John Hancock on there. Hm as is uh being
the bishop as well too, So yeah, that is pretty cool.
You know, Matt, that banner would look nice in my basement.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Yeah, there you go. They want to run down to
steal it?

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, if they want to come on a little kid,
be like the be like the grown man who snags
a home run ball in front of eleven and eleven
year old Hey, buddy.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Muscle them mount should have been stronger, kid. I assume
it's the students here.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, somebody, but hey, someone's gonna someone's leaving with a
cool with a cool sign ban or that's for sure
as your typical post practice. Some guys getting some extra
work out there right now. Roger Jones going through some
of the motions. I thought, Matt, he's another guy. Really
liked what we've seen from him this week. Yeah yeah,
Roderck Jones feeling feeling much better about him than I did,

(09:17):
you know two weeks ago when we first got here.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Not not showing any ill effects even like when when
he's on the sidelines of anything of that injury too.
I think that was bugging him for a couple of days.
So feeling good about that. The offense in general's starting
to shape up a little.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Bit hundred percent. That's good to see. Also, good to
see T. J. Watt and Cam Heyward are down there
working with Jack Sawyer and the Marvin Leale.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
So given lots not dressed or whatever.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Despite not dressing, they're they're both active and doing some
some technique stuff and some teaching stuff down there, which
is good to see.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Hrlman was doing a lot of past protection work as
a running back, okay by himself right early on after
practice too. He seems like another one that's contributing in
a in many ways. He possibly can get a lot
of the same guys on the drugs machine.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
As always, No John you today.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Though, Yeah, no John h today. We did not mention
those guys are like first one Ramsey there that the
king the Kings of the jugs machine, certainly, but yeah,
a lot of guys hitting the jugs, a lot of
guys getting a little couple extra reps in here as
things are now officially in the books for this practice
for the Steelers. Just two more practices.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Out here period here right, yeah, now, crazy as motile correct.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
It doesn't mean training camps.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
I mean training camps over just the public at St.
Vincent College, certainly. Yeah, that's one of those For those
who who missed that joke by Matt Moates would yell
at me every year, I'd be like, final practice of
training camp and he'd be like, no, it's not. It
is the last one here. But that doesn't mean training
camp is over for us, Okay, it just means that
we're moving back to the South Side. Things aren't getting
all easier all of a sudden.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
I wonder maybe you could even ask him or I
Starks or whoever they do. They hold back some stuff
that they want to make sure people don't see. I
would have tom they do, you know for the South Side,
if you know they can't report on it.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
It's almost like you know, like pre algebra and then
into algebra. Yeah, pre calc and then calc.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yet another phase of this. Yes, it's so funny how
the league sets things up, you know, like OTAs.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Were so excited. Well not just wait till mini camp,
just wait till training camp.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Right, there's always another step. It's like Studio fifty four.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
You can always go to like the next room, the
cool there's always a cooler room to try to get.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
To, you know, the grass is always greener, the cool guy.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
We're in a really cool room here, but the cool
dudes are down.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
All you're gonna get to our first break here of
this final hour of the week here for our our
live Stealers Nation radio coverage on campus. Uh, we've got
some audio from Roger Jones speaking of which and One Thornhill.
Matt a guy who is up. Yeah, a guy who
is not quiet and does not lack confidence. No, in one.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
They're very happy with him and it made the Minka
trade that much easier after getting to know him a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Absolutely, So we'll hear a little bit from Roger Jones,
a little bit from One Thornhill. On this other side,
we got a bunch of tweets to get to as
well before we get out of here, So plenty of
moving and shaking in the next Yeah, forty five minutes
or so. Here live from campus. It's a special training
camp edition of the Drive. Wes Shuler, Matt Williamson. It's
all happening on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Iheartradios. Live coverage OB twenty twenty five Steelers Training Camps
presented by Fadex where now meets Next and also brought
to you by First National Bank, by Klucy Chevrolet, iron
Workers Union Number three, by Easy Home Exteriors, by SNT Bank,
Remax Select Realty, by Tons Appliances, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop,

(12:47):
by Always Safe Flagging and Traffic Control, and by US Steel.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Another practice in the books for your Pittsburgh Steelers. Here
on the campus of Saint Vincent College at Chuck Nollfield
and a beautiful sonny Yeah, nice, slightly breezy litrobe, Pennsylvania,
of course, but a good week, Matt. And we've highlighted
a lot about the offense. One of those guys has
been Broderick Jones, another name that we've been saying pretty
much every day is one Thornhill as well too. Both

(13:20):
of those guys are gonna bring some attitude to their
respective units and their respective sides of the football. I
think agreed. And one thorn Hill just a guy who
has not been shy about how good he thinks this
defense can be.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Yeah, he does talk it up at a pretty historic level. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:36):
So one thorn Hill, Broodes, Broderick Jones. Yeah, two good
guys to hear from here. Post practice will go thorn
Hill first and then Broderick Jones. Here's what they had
to say.

Speaker 6 (13:46):
To be smacking down every ball that comes comes his way.
Is that something that you all keep notice since seventy
eight puts up one.

Speaker 7 (13:52):
Of them arms. I mean, it's great when you got
big guys up front like that, you know, for quarterback,
want to throw the ball down in the middle of
it as I mean, they gonna take a big risk
doing because if they knock that ball up, it just
gives us a chance to make a player on the
mall and in accept it and take away points.

Speaker 8 (14:05):
You guys have sat quite a few corners the past
few days, Joey Jerry's.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Ramsey, But you guys still seem to have that fluidity.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
That you're always changing.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
Things up in the secondary.

Speaker 6 (14:14):
What can you say about other guys like Brandon Echols,
James Pierre, who could we've been filling it.

Speaker 7 (14:19):
You know, we talk about like we can't take a
step back just because one guy's down. You never know
what's gonna happen. Just you play football. You know, it's
a physical sport. So one guy could go down for
you know, one plague could go down for.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
A couple of weeks.

Speaker 7 (14:30):
So the next guy just got to prepare each and
every week like a starter.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
You got to know bad well or the game and stuff. Yeah,
you guys seem like kind of a.

Speaker 7 (14:39):
You know, he's I think he's very similar to me,
you know, like he likes to have fun out.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
There, high energy guy.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
I love having him out there.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
You know, he's great.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
He's a smart football player, know how to disguise the
lives is gonna make us better when you've got smart
guys in the field like that.

Speaker 9 (14:53):
We can we can hear you out there a lot. Huh,
We can hear you out there on the field a lot.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
How much you pride yourself.

Speaker 9 (14:59):
On you communication and that was an issue for this
defense last year. How much you think you can be
part of the solution going forward there.

Speaker 7 (15:04):
You know, I've always you know, took pride in like
being that quarterback of the defense.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
You know, you got the.

Speaker 7 (15:09):
Linebacker that's making all the calls giving it to the safeties,
but you know, the safeties make a majority of the checks,
you know, So having a guy like me, I feel
like I'm I'm very well, very vocal and letting guys
know what we're doing. So if you know what you're doing,
you can play at a high level.

Speaker 6 (15:23):
You breaking down an interception on the two minute drill
which you saw you were playing over.

Speaker 7 (15:27):
The middle, literally just reading the quarterback's eyes. I didn't
think he was gonna throw it. He drew it ball,
Canton made a catch.

Speaker 9 (15:33):
Is that something you have to clarify with them and
say which interception you're talking about, because how about the
one yesterday?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Then oh well, yeah, I forgot about the one yesterday.

Speaker 7 (15:41):
So you know, two days in a row and a
two minute drug I could.

Speaker 5 (15:44):
Close it out.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
So it was good.

Speaker 9 (15:46):
It was a good felling, you know, getting my hand
on the football.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
Aaron talked to you.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Speak to recent game on Saturday, doesn't speak feel any
different than than last week.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Uh, I mean, we're we're playing against someone else.

Speaker 7 (15:58):
It's not your teammates, you know, like we have live
periods and things like that. Against your teammate, you don't
want to take those big hits on the teammates. But
when you got another opponent in front of you with
a different colored jersey, you don't really know who they are.

Speaker 5 (16:09):
You know, it gets a little more physical. So we're
excited about that. We don't really see, you know, how
physical of a defense and a team we are.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Do you think this defense can be pretty.

Speaker 7 (16:18):
I think it can be one of the best. They're
of all time, really, and I'm putting that in there now,
one of the best of all time.

Speaker 9 (16:25):
You guys talk about that as a group, because guys
seems like they're not being bashful to say they think
they could be the number one defense this year.

Speaker 7 (16:31):
I mean when you got literally we got pieces everywhere.
Look at the roster, look at who we have. It's
it's incredible. Like literally, I don't feel like there's a.

Speaker 5 (16:39):
Weakness on the defense.

Speaker 7 (16:40):
Like if you look at most scenes, you know you
got you got the fish out there, like you know
that one person that's like one or two people that's like,
I'm not sure, but with us literally out of front,
that's unbelievable. Linebackers is great and dbs that could cover anyone.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
It seems like the offense, you know, is starting to find.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
A little bit more of their rhythm.

Speaker 9 (16:58):
What if you notice that they're doing better to get.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
More complete, more passes and move the ball in.

Speaker 7 (17:03):
The spot, moving motion and a lot quarterbacks looking guys
off making a lot of great bros.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Is is that something you see a.

Speaker 6 (17:11):
Different guy back there under center?

Speaker 5 (17:13):
How has Aaron Laudry's been with you guys?

Speaker 8 (17:15):
Yeah, he's great, great leader, He's very vocal. So you know,
we just gotta walk in and make sure everybody's on
one page and you know, making.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
Sure we're keeping him up weep.

Speaker 7 (17:24):
There's been a lot to talk to about this O
line and how it's not the biggest OH line and
you know, maybe doesn't have a whole lot of depth.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
What do you have to say about about that?

Speaker 8 (17:34):
It's never about the size, It's all about the fighting
adult and I feel like everybody on our old line
has that fight. They come in each and every day
ready to work on things that they need to work
on to get better, and you know, I.

Speaker 5 (17:46):
Feel like as long as you have that mindset, nobody.

Speaker 7 (17:48):
Can stop before the O bring now to that of
most of you guys, I mean, are heard are you
dealing with the injuries that you guys have?

Speaker 8 (17:54):
Yeah, it's tough always, you know, dealing with injuries, but
it's a physical and it comes with it.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
So sometimes you.

Speaker 8 (18:02):
Just gotta take the god with the bad and just
continue to play, you know, even if it's just for
a practice or a game.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
You know, you just got to try and fight for
and put school for your teammates. There's the other team,
you guys picking up different stunts.

Speaker 6 (18:14):
To twist the defenses. Let's throwing at you guys, but
they throw a lot at you guys. What can you
say about the improvement that you guys have had from
the start a camp to now.

Speaker 5 (18:23):
Enjoying those things? Man, it's great.

Speaker 8 (18:26):
Our defense is top notch, man, our defense has always
been top notch. So just being able to go up
against them every day. Coach Ta he dives it up
every day. It's something new every day.

Speaker 5 (18:36):
With him, so you know.

Speaker 8 (18:37):
It keeps us on our toes and you know, I
feel like that's a good thing for us too, because
with us being able to see a lot of things,
when the game, it slows down for us.

Speaker 6 (18:45):
So it's all back and forth, go back and forth
with you A pack seemed like like that pass played
at him, Like.

Speaker 8 (18:51):
Yeah, we was just moveshitting around. Me and Pat are
always joking. We're always busting each other's shops, just trying
to get the best out of each other. It's never
nothing personal. I know that he knows that, so you know,
we just continue to do it.

Speaker 6 (19:06):
How do you feel about the camaraderie in this office though,
to be able to like call each other out when
there is a real mistake and it's like hey, and
people take it like professionals and move forward together.

Speaker 8 (19:15):
Do you You don't have a choice but you because
it it doesn't just affect you, It affects the whole
team at the end of the day.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
So you know, you just gotta take it with a
brand saw.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
Personally for you, you know you're a screen now.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
Just what are you hoping to see out of yourself
this year? Just continue to grow each and every day. Really,
no set goal.

Speaker 8 (19:34):
I just wanna be the best that I can be
each and every day, every game, and like I said,
just making sure I keep hearing up all seasons.

Speaker 6 (19:41):
So what's the part of your game that you feel
is w's proved the most from the end of last season.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
To right now.

Speaker 8 (19:46):
Whether it's footwork, hand hand.

Speaker 6 (19:47):
Placement, or just like overall knowing things.

Speaker 8 (19:52):
I would probably say probably not footwork and my hands, uh,
just being able to coicken them up, being light on
my feet. You you know, thinking thinking ahead of the play
instead of always trying to just have that process like
while we're going into the play.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
You know, which is it?

Speaker 8 (20:10):
It caused you to slow down and not place as
fast as you want, and you know, all all sorts
of crazy things like that.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
So you may I'll probably say, you know, just being quicker.

Speaker 8 (20:19):
With my hand up feeding So you said, experience and
the loss of weight that you took off to prepare
for camp, all that's really been helping you.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
Yes, all of it plays the part when.

Speaker 9 (20:27):
You still wrap it up from your whatever they can playing.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
I've seen you coming out some shops and everything at
that part is just getting back to from the center.

Speaker 8 (20:34):
I just do what they telling them to, you know, coach,
I'll be trying they send 'em in and get me
I'll be trying to push them out, and they they
don't they they always told me out.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
So are you start to play Saturday or do you.

Speaker 5 (20:43):
Think you're you're playing?

Speaker 8 (20:44):
Uh, I'm pretty sure I did the repsit left top
when game reps.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Are left top.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
Is that important to you to get some of that
long runs?

Speaker 5 (20:50):
Yeah? Always, always, always.

Speaker 7 (20:52):
We've already sorry if you've already been anced this, But
just how do you feel as an offense, as an
entire higher group.

Speaker 9 (20:58):
I guess that you guys have been coming together at
the point you.

Speaker 7 (21:00):
Got dere bond ors this morning, he said, y'all.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
We last three or four practices, you had to kind
of take it to the trikes.

Speaker 5 (21:05):
Yeah. You know, it's always just about the next day.

Speaker 8 (21:09):
You can't focus on what happened yesterday or what just
happened in practice today. It's all about going in there
watching film and you know, figuring out what we gotta
get better at as a whole. And you know, I
feel like we do that each and every day. You know,
we we come with a open mindset and you know
when somebody like eight behind us, you know, it just
gives us a a busal confidence.

Speaker 5 (21:27):
So we just gotta keep him up bough projer if you.

Speaker 7 (21:28):
Feel like your offensive getting into a rhythm, like you
can kind.

Speaker 8 (21:31):
Of feel like growing right, Yes, you know, we just
gotta continue to grow, continue to jail together because.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
We got a lot of new movie pieces on. But
at the end of the that I think would be.

Speaker 6 (21:42):
A right rodigaool like White Black gone from a fifth
round rookie that was working his way up to being
the first guy that comes off the bench for them.
You guys have tussled a few times. What you can
say about him and is evident, and uh.

Speaker 8 (21:53):
He comes with a lot of grits, like go, he
comes with the fight, he comes with the nastiness. He's
a big physical dude. It's hard to move him. So
you know, I feel like he's gonna be a tough,
a tough individual for us, you know, just for the
rest of camp and.

Speaker 5 (22:12):
For the season coming up. You know, we got a lot.

Speaker 8 (22:15):
Of depth, and you know it's good to have depth
in different positions because you never.

Speaker 5 (22:20):
Know how just like camp people get all these little
injuries and stuff like that, so you never know. So
it's just good to be.

Speaker 8 (22:27):
Able to know you have him as a you know,
backup all potential.

Speaker 5 (22:30):
However it plays out.

Speaker 6 (22:32):
I know when the practice is going and practice is
going on, you're offen a guy that's like making crack
of a joke or hyper like yeah, you know, like
a conscious thing you do or let natural.

Speaker 5 (22:43):
I think it just comes natural.

Speaker 8 (22:46):
You know, it's always good to have fun and and
you know, just not be so uptight with whatever you're doing.
So you know, we just I try whatever I try
and keep that mindset, but you know, still having that
mindset of okay, you still have to work and do your.

Speaker 5 (22:59):
Job for you know. So it's a good balance in there.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
You've had a couple of days where you you heard
Wan Thornhill talking about this confidence, gushing about this defense
could be one of the best ever. And then Progerck
Jones as well too. A I think a sense of confidence,
yeah from the offense that you know, we struggled to
start camp, but we're we're starting to punch back. We're
starting to figure it out.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
Yeah, and a level of maturity from Jones too.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
This is year three. I'm a former first round pick.
I am the left tackle. Like it's just now I
understand how this works. I understand there's a lot on
the line. I understand it's the pivotal.

Speaker 4 (23:34):
That's just the feeling I get from him when he's here.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
You know, like I understand that people are counting on
me here and I got a lot to prove.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
But I've been here three years. I know all this
thing works.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
You know, yep, exactly right. There is a quiet confidence
about him. And you know what, I like his demeanor, Matt, Yeah, Yeah,
like he is. He's like one of those lighthearted guys
in the huddle. And I think sometimes for someone like
a left tackle who is so key to your offensive
line and your offense, he doesn't look like he's bare
that weight on his shoulders out there. He looks like
he's just having fun playing football and read and ready

(24:04):
to roll. And I think that's important.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
I know you got to keep it light, but I mean,
I also don't think he's aloof or.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Goofy, Yeah, goofy or anything like that. He's just just
a little lighthearted, keeps the mood light. We saw him,
you know, high five in the guys on the defense
and stuff after practice and you know, telling them that
was a good stuff out there today. I thought he
looked really good and some of those drills on the
far side field, picking up some stunts, moving his feet well,
using his hands correctly. I'm feeling as good about him

(24:33):
as I have at any point.

Speaker 4 (24:34):
In this price. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
I don't know how much the first Temo line will
play in Jacksonville, or they get two good edge defenders
and walked inn Allen too. I don't know, if I mean,
considering Hunter and Lawrence are playing, I would imagine you
might see Jones against.

Speaker 4 (24:49):
Legit edge dudes on Saturday at least a series worth.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
That would be great, That would absolutely be great, totally.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
Again, as he continues to kind of fly a little
under the radar. But I think it's because we're all
so quietly confident it like.

Speaker 4 (25:00):
Oh he's good that box and I don't talk about
it anymore.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Seventy six can play, all right, let's keep it moving.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
I think that might be the case. So that's what
exactly what you want from an alignment. You don't want
to be talking about them totally totally.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
That's almost like a cornerback. Sometimes the best ones are
the ones that you're not talking about.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Very often the reason bring them up throws a flag
on them, or the guys would make big tackles, you know,
shut them.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
Up doing their job in the right place.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
Yeah, I hope Walker and Allen those guys do play.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
Now that I'm thinking about it. It'd be a lot
like last year when we got to see them against
Buffalo with Rousseau and Yeah, and see those guys in
the preseason. That was a good, good test and challenge
for those guys. Good call, Matt, it's only a series,
even if it's only even if it's only a series.
A couple couple of pass pass rush reps against a
couple first round former first round picks recent.

Speaker 4 (25:44):
Form, Yeah, yeah, have talented players, productive players.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Would certainly be a certainly be a good baseline to
to start the preseason on Saturday night. We've got one
more segment to go when we return on the other side,
some final thoughts, and we've got a bunch of tweets
to get to too. We'll do all of that as
we roll the long Last chance. If you want to
get involved at Williamson NFL at Wesley Euler, we'll close
down with some of your questions on the other side,

(26:07):
Matt Williamson, Wesley Uller. A training competition of the drive
here on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio network.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
Iheartradios. Live coverage of twenty twenty five Steelers training Camp
is presented by FedEx where Now meets Next and also
brought to you by CGR Wholesale, Roofing and Siding Supply Center,
by Tom's Appliances, by Always Safe Flagging and Traffic Control,
by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, by Schneider Downs, by

(26:39):
Hassa's Steak and Seahouse, by your Neighborhood Forward Store, by
Castle Rock, by Clearview Federal Credit Union, and by US steel.

Speaker 2 (26:51):
Down. The home stretch here of this well, I guess
kind of final full week of trading camp. Yeah, yeah,
on the campus of Saint Vincent College. It happens quickly,
Matt really does.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Sometimes doesn't feel that way, but then you look back, like, boy,
we just kind of got here.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yeah, absolutely, and it's it has not felt that way,
but we did. We just we we just kind of
got here in the sense of just two more practices
now next week after.

Speaker 4 (27:14):
The game under Belt by then and.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Barn Down a joint practice against the Bucks. The Bucks
out of joint practice against the Titans today. Maybe that's
somebody I saw that they had a joint practice today,
so I'm sure they'll be up for it next week. Uh,
you know the Steelers will as well too. That one
will be will be a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Yeah, I'm hoping to get down there. Yeah, we still
be broadcasting from there. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
Yes, I don't know exactly what the plan is, but
I think there's at least a decent chance we will
be down there and doing something. But we'll have that
information for everybody next week, I'm sure. But now, Matt,
before we get out of here, what do you say
we get to some tweets?

Speaker 4 (27:48):
Yeah, I think we got a bunch of people asking
them some tidbits here.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Let's yeah, some good some good questions here. And just
off the bat, a few of you made some Skyler Thompson,
Tristan Thompson, keen like Annie tweets and says on today's
episode of Name that Thompson. Let's not forget about Keenan Thompson.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Okay, Thompson twins.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
And uh and Scott tweeted us at the beginning of
the show breaking news Steelers have signed Canadian basketball big
man Tristan Thompson. You guys are funny. I like you guys.
You've been good today though today. Didn't screw it up today.
And that's all we can do is just get a
little bit better every day.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
Will Howard in dreams you stepped up, Skyler stepped up,
you know right.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
John leads us off today and he says, if the
Steelers need to help the left tackle with a tight end,
does that mean they need even more from their wide
receiver two?

Speaker 4 (28:38):
Maybe?

Speaker 3 (28:38):
I mean, but it's pretty rare for a five man
route combination to happen anyway, you know what I mean.
Like you're not gonna get every eligible out there all
the time, so that's not uncommon.

Speaker 4 (28:51):
I mean, you may be.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
I mean everyone Chips Watt with the back and the
tight end. I mean, it's not like it's unusual for
the Steelers that have to do it too, you know, correct.
And I don't know that Proderick Jones is going to
be this turnstile that can't ever.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
I don't think so. Again, especially after this week. I'm
feeling much better with what we saw from him here
this week.

Speaker 4 (29:09):
It's not like, boy, we can't ever leave him.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
Alone, at least I don't think.

Speaker 4 (29:13):
I don't to that point right.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
Yeah, no, absolutely not. Mark tweets here and he says,
I need you guys thoughts on some season bets. All right,
uh TJ over or under sixteen and a half secks, Ooh.

Speaker 4 (29:28):
That's a lot.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
It's a big number. I'm under fifteen fourteen.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
He's like thirteen this year, right, yeah, I mean, but
that was twenty plus we know that.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
Yeah, thirteen this year, and he didn't have any in
the final four games, right right, So I mean if
he would have gotten three in those final games, he
would have had sixteen, but he didn't. But he didn't.
Now though, like kind of as we've talked about, if
those sacks.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
Numbers just a big number, it's a big to play
every game, you know, I mean, it's a big Unders
are always safer, guys.

Speaker 4 (29:59):
I mean, I hate the first bubbles.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
Here, but that's a huge that's a big number.

Speaker 4 (30:02):
You could have sixteen and lead the league in sacks
and still lose your bet.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
High Smith over under nine and a half sacks.

Speaker 4 (30:10):
That one.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
I feel a little better about the over. I mean,
it's just a lower number. I think he's a highly.

Speaker 2 (30:15):
Missing a game or two. He will still hit that.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
I mean, and the other thing too, as I matched
with watt Is Sawyer and especially herbig are gonna be
out there a fair amount. You know, they're not gonna
play every snap. Absolutely, and I'm assuming high Smith plays
week one. I think it's not that it's an easy under,
but I think he plays week one.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
I think so too. A couple of team season totals,
Mark says he likes the Broncos over nine and a
half wins on the season total.

Speaker 4 (30:40):
Hmmm, that seems about right.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
They won ten last year. Yeah, it's a tough division,
no doubt.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
Peyton always wins one or two more than they thank you.
And I think they're a much improved team. Could be
the best defense in the league. It was the best
defensive league and they added more. Maybe, h I guess
I'd go over and seven seem closer than nine and eight.

Speaker 2 (31:04):
And then Mark says ravens eleven and a half under.

Speaker 3 (31:10):
Mmmmmm, I think they might be the best team in
the league. Yeah, I know, no it wants to hear that,
but I don't see it run on these airways. Yeah,
I don't see a lot of weaknesses. Tough schedule, yeah,
reasonably tough division, but they probably win four in the division,
you know, at least three.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
Big number. I mean they could go they could go
eleven and six, you know, and yeah and still not
hit that. But those are some good ones. There are
some tough ones.

Speaker 4 (31:37):
They are they are the win over underwin stuff is always.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
Tough, always tough, always tough. Randy tweets us and says, guys,
how is logan? Lee performed well?

Speaker 3 (31:48):
But I wouldn't say a standout Well. I don't see
any deficiencies there. I think he's got a I wouldn't
say inside track of making the team, but I kind
of I like his chances.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
Yeah, I think you're right. I think there's a quiet
confidence around that he's going to be a real He's
gonna he's gonna have his hand in the pile and
and and and have an impact on this defense, this sea.
As we've discussed too, there are a lot of capable
guys in that defensive line.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
Yeah, I mean I think Lee could be like your warmly,
your lowry type guy that does a lot of dirty work,
ends up with two sacks or something like that and
makes Cam Hayward's life easier because he spells them.

Speaker 4 (32:26):
You know.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Yes, I think that's and you take it. I think
that makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
Yeah, I think that makes a lot of eighteen snaps
a game, right right.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Scott tweets us and says, hypothetical, you and Matt are
calling a joint practice between the Steelers and the Browns.
How many fights would we see in two hours?

Speaker 4 (32:43):
Wow? Probably a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
I mean I I think a lot.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
Yeah, probably a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:50):
I think that that would that would be something I
doubt that we see is uh is is a joint
practice between between between those two teams? For sure? I
mean there's there's no doubt there, there's no doubt. But yeah,
that would that would be very interesting, very interesting. Rich
tweets and says, you know, felt for a long time

(33:10):
like the Steelers were going to add another wide receiver.
Now it seems more and more likely that they are
not going to sign one. What is your belief Do
you still think they will or no?

Speaker 4 (33:20):
I don't think I've changed much.

Speaker 3 (33:22):
I think Roman Wilson doing what he's done, slow plays
it a little bit more, you know, like if is
this the right move or not? I think you become
even more patient, you know, especially after a preseason game
in the in the books would be nice.

Speaker 4 (33:39):
I still would like to add another edition, though.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
Yeah, I don't have room.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
Yeah, I just fear the metcalf injury. You know, that
could really derail a lot of stuff and make you
too easy.

Speaker 4 (33:50):
To play against.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Yep, I think you are.

Speaker 4 (33:54):
I like Austin, I like Wilson, but to both little
you know.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
I think you are correct. Let's see here, Dan tweets
us and says, NFL dot Com listed a pivotal rookie
for each team in the National Football League, and they
went with Caleb Johnson over Derek Harmon. Do you agree
maybe in the sense of pivotal. I get how you
frame it a lot, and you need somebody to emerge

(34:17):
at that position, right.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
You know, like if Harmon were to have them forbid
to get injured in the preseason game, your d line's
still good. If Johnson were to get injured the preseason game,
you might be calling people for trades, you know, So
pivotal could be the right word there.

Speaker 4 (34:34):
Yeah, I see that. There, I see that and the
end of a second round pick.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
And exactly right, exactly right. Let's see here. Andrew tweets
us and says, what's the most selfish thing that you do?
In a day to day routine that you're okay with. Wow,
most selfish thing in a day to day that's a
good question.

Speaker 4 (34:55):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
Like for me, it would probably be I need, like
even when my girls are like, even when I'm at
home with the kids, just like ten minutes to like
wake up and drink a coffee, you.

Speaker 4 (35:06):
Know, Okay, leave me alone.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Yes, Like I'm not. I'm not like to the full
extent of oh, leave me alone till I've had my
coffee while those people, but this grumpy bear, there's just something.
And maybe it's because I'm at the stage in life
now with two young kids that it doesn't happen very often,
but like, selfishly, I love just ten, fifteen, twenty minutes
of quiet to start the day.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
Okay, Yeah, I think that's a young kid thing.

Speaker 2 (35:31):
It's definitely a kid thing. I don't know if you
have one. I'm listen to your podcasts, yeah.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
And sometimes I blare them, you know, like if I'm
like putting laundry away Orerever, I just I don't wear
your phones. I just blasted in my room or whatever.
And maybe the rest of the family is like, yeah,
we don't all need to hear that.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
Yeah, Angry Bike Lane tweets us and says over under
will be twenty twenty six defense next season, take up
more or less than seventy five percent of the cap space.

Speaker 3 (36:00):
The quarterback could be much cheaper quarterbacks and it's not
so expensive now.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
I mean, you could still be at the point where
like DK Metcalf and your two tight ends are the
only ones that are.

Speaker 3 (36:09):
Yeah, I mean you're not gonna pen I mean, the
old line's not gonna be expensive.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
Yet four of them are still gonna be on their
rookie deal.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
Like two years from now. It could be different, you
know what I mean. I still think it's gonna be
a big chunk. It'll be a big chunk because I
mean this comes back to quarterback. I mean, if you
have a first round quarterback Rudolph and and Howard and
so it's like the cheapest quarterback.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
Room in the league.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
And DK Metcalf's make a good money, but he's not
making Chase justin Jefferson money.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
Tight end's the only position that could be amongst the
highest in the league, and it's spread over two dudes.
I don't think that they're gonna if Seamalu Leaves. I
don't think they're gonna give a twenty five million dollar
contract to a left guard. They'll probably draft on the
second round or something like that. Could there be a
wide receiver edition maybe, but I don't think you're gonna
sign a twenty million dollar guy on free agency.

Speaker 4 (36:57):
It's not what they do.

Speaker 3 (36:57):
Yep, totally no, think you don't have a lot allocated
to the defense.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
Last one from Michael most excited to watch on Saturday Night.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
Maybe the tackles against the edge guys. We were just
talking that might.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Only be for a series, but right Caleb Johnson would
be on the list for me. Be on the list
for me.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
Sure about like a Peyton Wilson maybe plays an extra
series more than Queen or somebody like that.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
Like maybe Pete as well too, depending on how much
work he gets.

Speaker 3 (37:29):
Out there, Like a Ya Black that keeps showing out
the career too well, you know, he could play deep
in the game.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
I'm trying to think something like Sawyer will probably play
a decent amount.

Speaker 3 (37:37):
Yeah, I'm trying to think guys like deep into the
second quarter, into the second half type guys, not just
the you know, the dudes will be done five minutes
in the game.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
Yes, yes, Matt, I think that'll do it for us today.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
All right, let's come back Monday.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
Let's come back Monday. We'll have some renewed energy, I
think on Monday after a couple of days, a couple
of days away in a preseason game talking about staring
down the final couple practices here as well too. So
as we've told you a good the time, plain h
I will be on a actually you know what, will
probably be landing in Jacksonville around this time tomorrow, really,

(38:12):
so yeah, plenty to.

Speaker 4 (38:14):
Give you to yourself.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
We'll have some evening time. And you know, it's nice
to as much as it'll stink, because it'll be like
two thirty three o'clock in the morning Sunday morning, Saturday night,
Sunday morning when we land flying back after the game.
That's always like a tough you get three four hours
of sleep type.

Speaker 4 (38:29):
Thing because your kids don't care.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Because my kids don't care that dad got home at
three in the morning. They're still gonna wake me up
at five thirty six o'clock. But it'll be nice to
sleep in Saturday morning in the hotel in Jacksonville. I'll
get my quiet breakfast morning and wake up on Saturday morning.
Matt might even get around your Friday night.

Speaker 4 (38:45):
Saturday morning could be a good Friday night.

Speaker 2 (38:47):
Saturday morning will be relaxing, and as much as it
won't be my own bed, a hotel will definitely be
an upgrade from the dorm room.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Oh yeah, I'd be real happy in a hotel tonight
if that's the best I could do.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
That.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
Good stuff, man, Another fun week with you, and I'll
be looking forward to putting a bow on it next week.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
Yep, yep. Two more practices from Saint.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
Vennie's always happens quick. Everybody. Enjoy the weekend, enjoy the
preseason game. We'll be back on Monday to break it
all down for you. As always, big thanks to Matt,
and big thanks to our producer Justin back at the
ranch for holding us down. As always, Take care, everybody.
We'll talk to you next week. As always. You know
where to find us. It's on your twenty four to
seven home of the Black and Gold. It's Steelers Nation
Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
