Speaker 1 (00:05):
Iheartradios. Live coverage of about twenty twenty five Steelers training
camp is presented by Badex where Now meets Next, and
also brought to you by bud Light, Independence Health System,
by Pennsylvania One Call System, by Live Casino, Caliente Pizza
and Drafthouse, by Don's Appliances, South Hill's Auto, Laurel Highlands Visitors, Bureau, Remax,

(00:29):
Select Realty, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop, and by US steel.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
A red zone team period here. Now for the offense,
Aaron Rodgers in the shotgun with Gainwell and Caleb Johnson
in the backfield.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Now we'll see that a lot, but that's not Yeah,
it's something that Arthur Smith has used over the years
sometimes with Quarterall Patterson is kind of the receiving back
nice route.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
By nice route by Gainwell. It just got half of
a step on Eccles and Rogers thread of that one in.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
There wasn't bad covered. But I mean he's had a
little bit of leverage and Rogers put exactly where he should.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
A little bit a little bit Rogers now he.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Plans for gain Well. That's all I can say.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Definitely, yeah, him and him and Darnell Washington feel like, yeah,
factors for this offense.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
That's it. That's great. Called he couldn't be more different.
But they're both gonna do maybe things you don't expect
or things we haven't seen yet.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
They stand next to each other, they don't even look
like they Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Sport, but that's often true with Washington.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, to be fair, no doubt he looks like that's
standing next to a lot of people out here. Rogers
will continue to operate from the shotgun and now it's
Jalen Wore in the loane back Connor Hayward will move
in motion from left to right. Now back left, mooth
and DK split out back shoulder, back shoulder for.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I'm not sure Wilson knew that's was the move. I
don't think so, because he did not adjust like his
back shoulder, and he's complaining that he should got flagged.
Maybe he did get grabbed a little bit, but he
might also be Ye, I don't think Rogers is th.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Old of them seeking some comfort with that.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, I got flagged.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Rogers just kind of slammed his helmet down.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yeah. I think he's looking at him like you're the principal.
I got one on one there. I am throwing that
back shoulder and you didn't know it. I don't care
if somebody grabbed your.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
He's got his arm around him. The hostile conversation, but
you could come over here to the principal's office for
a second. Let's talk about it.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Now.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Roman's getting out of the principles. I'm going back to recess.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
It was all in the constructive way. He put his
arm around him and said.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Hey, I don't know how harsh the words were.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
But he didn't put his arm around him, so it
at least looked friendly.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
It was not thrilled with put adjustment.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
But what if he put his arm around him, Hey,
if you ever do that.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Again, right, that might be the last boy ever throw.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Mason Rudolph will check in for the second team offense. Yeah,
and a day that I think started out very well
for Rogers. A little frustrating with the nick to his leg.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah, it's gotten a little downhill from there.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
And that was not his fault, nor.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Was the one that happened to break where he hit Connor.
Hayward didn't get his head around, throws a bullet to him,
pops up. These two defensive backs fumble it and then
Ramsey comes out of nowhere and takes you to the house. Yeah.
Also not on the quarterback.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Rudolph under center now with Trey Sermon in the backfield,
gets the snappy's rowing to the end zone for Scotty
Miller broken up by Darryl Porter.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
You can see that's kind of a similar, big, heavy set,
bunch of people near the ball. No, you're getting one
on one on the outside. I'm pretty much throwing this
no matter what. Wilson doesn't adjust to the back shoulder,
Miller doesn't go be big and beat the corner. You
know the fact that like the Larry conversation we had,
you know, like I got you one on one, I

(03:48):
need you to win those, you know. And I'm not saying, boy,
now you gotta go trade for a receiver. But that's
not going to be Miller and Wilson's strength to begin with.
And you know, Austin's not the biggest guy either. When
thows one on one matchups with size and physicality, nice
little gain, well another.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Nice little quick slant. They're well blocked by Robert Woods.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
I think he's going to catch more passes than we think.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
I think so too, I do I think they're gonna
try and use him as kind of a matchup. Yeah,
and maybe some of that will relate to how, you know,
when the Steelers are in twelve and thirteen personnel, how
teams go about yeah a lot, you know, or we
see a base or we see a nickel. Then what
does that allow us to do with gain Well as
well too? To get some matchup?

Speaker 3 (04:32):
You know, That's kind of what I was thinking, Like
when gain Well's in the game as the single back,
no matter if it's with two tight ends and two
receivers or three tight ends and one receiver, you can
go empty easily. Now I like that better with a
running quarterback because now the whole planet knows you're throwing.
You know, you're not going to run quarterback power with

(04:54):
Aaron Rodgers, whereas fields you might have, but you still
could go empty if you're going to get heavier personnel
with one back on the field and just have game
Well do wide out stuff because he's done a lot
of pure wide out stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
He sure has my screen there by the way moves well. Yeah, yeah,
that screen game, I think is something we're gonna mm hm.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
That was well timed.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Plenty of the season screen.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Game was ugly early in camp.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Has uh tell you what it's funny too. You look
at like the too far side fields compared to this
close one, you can see it a little beat up.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
It's a little yeah yeah, right down the middle.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Round down the middle and on the sidelines here where
all the guys do their different drill the boy.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
The fields have held up great, very well camp. There's
been some camps for their disaster.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
And they had some some rainy, soggy days here early
on in camp. And big shout out as always to
the grounds crew. One of these years, Matt, we're gonna
get the grounds q on for an interview.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I have so many questions.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
We're gonna make it happen one of these years. Maybe
you know what we need to try and do is
and I know I'm I'm planning very far ahead here.
I'm talking like fifty weeks into the future. But every year,
like the Friday Night Light Show is a slower one,
right because there's no practice going on that day. We
should like when we get to camp next year, we
should try and set it up, you know, like hey guys,

(06:09):
Friday night Lights Day, like pop up with us for
ten minutes, give us for one secment, just give it
just one of you for ten minutes that we can
pick your brain on what you guys got going on
out here and everything. Maybe we'll try and line that
up for next year's camp. As Max Harlman in motion
now Skyler Thompson under center, Evan Hall the loan back.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Switching to play Apparently.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yep, Thompson signals something out Now the give is to
haul find a nice hole there. Yeah, certainly, and uh,
Hall hit it quick. Hall hit it quick, and he
hauls that one into the end zone. And is that
the end of practice as well?

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
As Mike Tomlin once again in shorts today, I really
can't believe again one of the craziest developments of camp.
I've never seen to wear shorts before. Now he's not once,
He's had them on like every day. Now, Hey, maybe
he's finally at that point where, like I used to
ask Motes about that all the time, like, what's with
the obsession with We're gonna be out here in ninety
degree heat, let's all wear black hoodies and black sweatpants,

(07:07):
right though, he was like, real simple, It's just everyone
wants to prove that they're tough. Everyone wants.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Assumed that was the short answer, and maybe he's proven
that after being the head coach for many many years.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Nearly two decades at the Helm, he doesn't have to free.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Time in Yeah, I assume that's what it was.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Practice now has officially concluded. Mike Tomlin brings the guys
in for one last breakdown here at Saint Vincent College
for this twenty twenty five portion on campus. Matt, there
we go, man, just like that.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
It's in the books, in the books, and they're look
pretty happy. Like tomorrow's basically a walk through. It looks
like they're all kind of offensive defense, giving each other hugs,
good work. You know, they all realize this is the
last real thing that they'll do on this field this year.
Many of them won't be back next year. Many will,
but no, it's a little bit different feel after this

(07:59):
practice right now. A lot of hugging and nice work
and good camp, you know, and I know camp isn't over,
but still this portion basically.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Is and there is no doubt a I mean, it's listen,
it's part of the camaraderie that they all love about
this right that you hear Jalen Ramsey talking about Yeah,
you hear and you hear Aaron Rodgers talking about like
there is a real kind of embrace the suck element
together out here, you know, away from your families, in
the dorm rooms on campus, in the weather elements and everything,

(08:25):
and so that's certainly you know, when you make it
through that together, there's some hey, you know, high five,
well done, we did it.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, we did it. You're right right. Nothing was perfect.
We got better out here. We became a better team,
We became a more bonded team. Some friendships were made,
and I think there's a lot to be said for that.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Fifteen practices out here, Matt, fifteen in the books now
over the course of what twenty day, it's about fifteen
practices in twenty days, That sound right, I think that's
that sounds a right right, Yeah, that's about the number
there as we have a quieter like crowd on hand today,
I think a little bit light and it feels like
it's last. Last day is usually the lightest then it's

(09:04):
a Tuesday, and it's super hot out here today, but
we will see. Uh, some of the guys stay out
here for some extra work.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
The autograph seekers might do well today though today's probably
less competition.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
I was gonna say, if we're going to peel back
the curtain for everybody, you know on some of the
how that move, how the sausage is made. If you're
someone with kids and you like to come out here
to watch the Steelers, and you bring your kids with
you because they want to chase autographs, last day is
probably a good day to hunt that downs less people.
And I just say, these guys are in a better mood.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Like they they're not leaving today.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
You know they're leaving tomorrow, but it's the last physical
practice out here. Everyone's in a good mood.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
They might be more apt to grab the pen and
give you an extra ten minutes or whatever. And it's
definitely less competition for autographs.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Than usual, exactly right. So there's a little little peel
behind the curtain for you. Somebody's down here in the
end zone with a Jack Sawyer Ohio State Jersey hope
they always like I think we said that a couple
of weeks ago. It felt like every time Sawyer and
Howard's somebody holding up a scarlet jersey, they made a
b line right over to him to sign it, which
I I totally get.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
That's I remember Nausey's rookie year. Yeah, there was a
lot of people using that trick with Bama stuff, and
he he bit over and over and over.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Over and over again to pick it too. Like I
remember Kenny would, he'd see like pit stuff and be like, hey,
give me that, let me sign that. Yeah that's cool.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
You know, smart move, guys. It absolutely is a strategy
for this stuff.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
That's what I'm gonna go down outside of the lunch
room with the Wu Jersey and see exactly sign it
as let's see here, Let's see who's getting some extra
work in and running down to the jugs machine post practice.
It's been a little while since we've seen Ramsey.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
It's usually Ramsey's move, but I.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Wonder if I wonder if we'll see him a social
hour it is, and like a lot of the position
groups or taking pictures together. Yeah, Eddie Faulkner is taking
a picture with all the running backs down there. Pat
Fryer move getting some some instruction from Alfredo Roberts the
tight ends coach down there. Now, all the wide receivers

(11:02):
are taking a picture together. I don't know if zach
Azani is in the is in the group there, but
all the wide receivers are taking a picture together as
we're gonna have some of the edge rushers working on
some stuff here too. Looks like TJ is doing a
little a little pass rushing clinic for these guys, which
is always good.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
As Uh, there's been a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
There has been a ton of that and uh for
the edge guys. Watching Jalen Ramsey walk down there, and
I don't know if he's heading towards the jugs machine.
He is with Makaiah of the Steelers PR team, so
maybe he's got some he might have some interviews and
some media obligations before he can hit the jugs. Troy
FALTONU looks like he's doing some media stuff down there. Well.

(11:45):
I did want to check if any extra offensive lineman
we're working on on quarterback center exchanges like we saw yesterday.
Don't see don't see any of that right now.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
There's not a lot of football going on now. It's
kind of social, you know. Yeah, Like I said, picture
sessions things like that, they've earned it. Yeah, absolutely a
little bit different feel after this practice than the others.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Yeah, as Connor, Connor Hayward and the guys were, uh,
just working on a tackling dummy drill over there, and
Connor I think, got a little hitching his steps. Can
you see him over there in the end zone kind
of Oh yeah, yeah, I kind of limping along a
little bit.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Yeah, he's not thrilled, Yeah, he was not.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
He hit that. He hit that sled.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Hard, man. I'm not sure why they're tackling the sled
sled though, that has all the metal on it.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
It looked like they were just kind of goofing around
and had run with it type thing. He's moving a
little bit better now, but he was.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Somebody else is down there. I mean, I understand, you know,
working on tackling, but there's a good chance so that's
not going to go well.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
I mean that is like a live tackle it to
the ground type.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
That's like a sled you push, that's not that's not
designed to be tackled, exactly right, a lot of metal
and base on it, you know.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Exactly right. Connor taking a seat and stretching himself out
a little bit there. We'll keep an eye on that.
Some of the offensive linemen are still down here. We'll
see if we see anybody working on center quarterback stuff.
But I know Skyla Thompson is still down there, so
I guess they do still have a quaye they're on
there that they could that they could work with as U.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Yeah, the center stuff is a little hairy for the
two preseason games coming up. Obviously not frasier with.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
The end yes, but but again, I mean, you you
gotta you gotta have some You've gotta have some options there,
and that's part of, uh, part of what this is
all about is figuring out those options. Is t J
and Jack Sawyer and a couple of the edge rushers
are going over some stuff with Denzel Martin, the outside
linebackers coach. A lot of the guys are down there

(13:37):
in the end zone working on some some tackling dummy stuff.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
Yeah, it's uh, this is a fun thing to do
after the first last practice. That's some sort of tradition.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
I'm not sure. I don't I don't recall that. But
it's also like wide receivers and tight ends you know,
that are just kind of working on the.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
They're offensive players, for sure.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Are offensive players that are working on this, on this
tackling dummy. So maybe it's some of the special teams
guys looking to get some some extra work in.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
We have seen the old lineman do tackling drills during practice.
I have not seen any of the skill guys like
this group working on any tackling.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
DK metcalf on the jugs machine down to the right,
I was trying to see. Still don't see Jalen Ramsey
down there, So maybe.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
He must have got scooped up for the media.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
He must have gotten gotten nabbed for for something. And
there's like a bunch of youth football kids over there too,
so maybe that's what they're doing. Maybe they're taking some
pictures and talking to some of the youth football guys
that are out here for the day.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
But Matt, there are some quarterbacks center stuff here though. Yes,
there is shotgun stuff for potential centers.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Yes, is that sharping working right now? Yeah it is.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
But nesters there I was really paying attention to.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
I have a feeling we'll see Nestor step up and
take it on shotgun. Some snaps here, certainly, but let's
get to a break. We'll bring you the fire final
kind of post practice moments here, and we will also
hear what Aaron Rodgers had to say just a couple
of hours ago. All of that when we return Well
Shuler Matt Williamson Training Camp. Our final hour here on

(15:12):
the Drive Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Network, iHeartRadio's live coverage job not twenty twenty five Steelers
Training Camp. He's presented by Fadex where now meets next
and also brought to you by CGR Wholesale Roofing and
Sighting Supply Center, by Tom's Appliances, by Always Safe Blagging

(15:37):
and Traffic Control by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food bad by
Schneider Downs by Hosa's Steake and Seahouse, by your Neighborhood,
Forward Stool, by Castle Rock, by Clearview Federal Credit Union,
and by US.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Steel Final practice for the Steelers in the books here
as there's some fun of things going on on the field.
Is that Johnny Smith working the jugs down here?

Speaker 3 (16:04):
I think so.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
I think it is.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
He's so consistent about that. I think he's still going
to get that in no matter what.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
And he's another guy who's got kind of a unique
build and body.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Tel Yeah usually can tell.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
That does look like him. So that's an encouraging sign
that Yeah still out there.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
You know, it's not running or anything, but right doing.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
His his jugs routine though as some final kind of
work with Skyler Thompson and some of the centers is
in the books since we returned from break and all
is pretty quiet out here now at chut Old Field.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
There's some scrums like deep in the end zone and stuff,
but all in all, it's wrapping up yep.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
A couple guys signing autographs down there, a couple of
guys talking to the media, but uh, for the most
part that is going to do it practice fifteen of
fifteen in the books, and another training camp for us
here Matt where Hey, I know we probably say the
same thing every year, but man, a lot to deuce

(17:00):
a lot I think that we've learned in the last
couple of weeks. Always yeah, still with with with plenty
to come here in the next few weeks as well too.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Absolutely, there's still a lot of work to be done.
I mean I always urge people to realize that there
could be another roster addition. I mean there's students that
got added late in the process that went on to
be big time Steelers, either get cut or still out there.
Maybe that's Andres Pete, you know, I mean he was
a recent addition that could be a keeper. Maybe there's
a trade in the work. So there's there's still a

(17:27):
lot of things that are going to happen with this team,
and unfortunately, knock on wood, there'll probably be a couple
of injuries in these upcoming games too. You know that,
you know, could derail some things too.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
That's a life for the national football It just is. Yeah,
And of course a guy who knows that very well
is Aaron Rodgers. Escaped a little bit of a scare today.
We were talking about you.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
That didn't feel good earlier.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Yeah, sure, didn't feel good. Mike Tomlin and his post
practice media wrap up said nothing, nothing to nothing of
concern there, you know, just just in some pain and
again like getting a cut down your your shin is
not a great feeling fun, absolutely not. But seems like
in the grand scheme of things, no harm, no foul
for the Steelers. QB one who took some time to

(18:10):
speak before practice on the final day here in with troube.
Here's what number eight had to say, Thank you.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
Doing practices are more better?

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Personal view?

Speaker 5 (18:19):
What do you like about him? What you looking forward
to about this? I said that I appreciate.

Speaker 4 (18:24):
Well for the starters yet because we don't play them
crazy a lot of times.

Speaker 5 (18:27):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
I think the thing you're always hopeful for is there's
not a lot of fights. We went against Tampa a
couple of years ago and had some vesting guys and
it was pretty clean practice. So hopeful for another clean
practice with them. But it's good to go against a
different team. I think what I said was I'm remembering,
and you get a chance to go against not vanilla defenses,

(18:50):
So hopefully Todd, Yeah, he probably won't show everything, but
we'll they do some stuff to stress.

Speaker 5 (18:55):
Our protection and give us a chance to get some
film to work on.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
What are some of the things took out of the
first prestance of year.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Well, I mean, I'm just you know, I'm just silent observer.
I think for the for the most part, just watching
the operation. And I can't stay silent in the entire
time on the headset because I gotta be the voice
of reasons sometimes. Although I felt like the headset was
pretty clean. You know, there's not a lot of freaking

(19:26):
out on there, not a lot of people talking and
they shouldn't be talking. So I thought the operation was good.
That Mason and Sky played fantastic. I played great, made
good decisions, would go with football, opportunistic and like I said,
you know, it's different in the preseason. You know it's
it's football like it's not always real football. But they
brought some pressures against US late in the game, and

(19:47):
Sky did a nice job of hanging in there and
in keep for a great contested catch touchdown. So there
were a lot of a lot of great things on
the film the way we started the game. That Mason
was super efficient given Darnell a big, big bodyball.

Speaker 5 (20:00):
There and there, and the red zone was great, and
I think, uh, there's always things to work on the details,
especially with.

Speaker 4 (20:06):
The second units. Uh were a little bit off about that. Overall,
you score thirty, you don't turn.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
The ball over.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Uh you really only have one sack cause Mason's taking
the other one there and then one combination of kJ
not yet now, And I thought it was.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
A pretty clean game.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Aaron, that seems like the fluidity continues to improve with
the first team offense out here.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
What's the leading to that?

Speaker 4 (20:26):
Well, I think I'm playing a little bit better, you know,
I feel comfortable on the offense. And DK and I've
been uh getting on the same page. Uh a little
more free movie which uh, which helps. But you know,
we've had we've had some injuries. Obviously Calvin's been out
for a while.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
So we love gamback, but it gives opportunities for other guys,
you know.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
I think, Uh, I think Scott he's done a really
nice job, made a lot of players for US Lake Romans,
starting to you know, feel confident in what he's doing.
And i'd love to tied end. I think you're getting
a lot of production out of those guys. Again, but
Johnny out, Uh, one guy I'd love to single out
is uh Is Connor. I mean, Connor does the right
thing every time. He's a really smart football player, and the

(21:05):
smartest players are the best players. So he's the kind
of guy you feel real confident that you could put
him in there at any time and and know he's
gonna be on the same page.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
You said that you were sometimes the voice of freeze
in on the headset. What does that sound like.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
What's an instance when you.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Would get on there, Well, sometimes people freak out on
that and start to yell on the screaming. Four other times,
people who are talking they shouldn't be talking.

Speaker 5 (21:31):
But I'm I'm more of the comic relief on there.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
I would say, uh at least week point uh with
some with some you know, timely or ill timely jokes.
Uh untimely, I guess, but uh yeah, I've I've heard
some freak outs in the fasts.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
What should you get out of these weeks in La Trobe,
whether it's the you know, reps themselves, or learning guys
or even learning the.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Fan base and that kind of thing from this whole.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
Experience, Mike, Mike talks about it being things that you
can't uh measure, you know, the connections that happened here.
Yesterday we had a home run derby year and I
was out in the hot sun just shagging the short
staff for the most part, dragging on Christian koons were
making a bunch of airs at the black corner. But
it's as those moments that you loved and as much

(22:14):
as uh, I'll look forward to my bed and and
uh not have to worry about bed bugs at times, Uh,
I'll I'll miss uh, I'll miss this experiences cause it's
really special to you want to make this walk down
the hill every day and Uh, see the fans in
the crowd, even when it's you know, hot day like today,
it's pretty special. And to you know, I have the
times in the calf with the guys and you know,

(22:35):
finding different guys to get to.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
Know that much with.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
And then you know the night times over the.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
Dorms where you're talking football, talking life, playing cards or
whatever it is, playing video games.

Speaker 5 (22:44):
I didn you forgot how to play video.

Speaker 4 (22:46):
Games, but I had to remember, uh, just to you know,
connect with those guys, and I'll definitely miss them.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
To the Do you make a point to on how
like Holme was a big draw when you signed her.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
I'm sure it's what your relationships is like you you
were signing.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Any rememberable rocket when.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
You're off the Super Bowl or any other previous and
rotcheson steam out.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
I don't really run the super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
Uh just the one time we try to catch him
at twelve on the field and he called time out
pretty quick and I let go around. They kind of nodded.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
I kind of nodded back. I've always respect him.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
I've talked to guys that played for the Steelers over
the years, Guys that we might have had after that
are friends around the league, and it's just, uh, you
know the stuff that uh you hear about is uh
kind of the the foundational stuff.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
Then you get to get to be here and see
how he interacts in the meeting and how he leads it,
how he's on the practice field.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
Uh, just his overall demeanor and conflidence and swag is
more pretty special.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Airing after the game in Jacksonville, I saw you walking
off with uh TJ Cam.

Speaker 4 (23:41):
How often are you talking to those guys and how much.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
Do you you know, listen to them and get advice
from them too? Uh all the time.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
I mean, I'm not trying to break up that romance
because anytime I rip on one of the two, the
other one just takes us back pretty quick. So uh,
I really love and respect that Friendship's uh it's a
cool one to watch. But you know, I mean I'm older,
so I gravitate till towards the old heads. And I
just happened to find myself walking you know. One of

(24:08):
the weird things is and I'm twenty one years in
the league, so I'm over there.

Speaker 5 (24:12):
Who do I know on Jacksonville?

Speaker 4 (24:14):
You know, like I know Heath Farm with all the
special teams coach that I played against him, Chad more
than he was with us.

Speaker 5 (24:21):
And I've met Trevor a few times. So I was
kind of looking.

Speaker 4 (24:23):
Around going, you know, doing the Joe Biden like, all right, well,
I guess I don't know anybody here, so.

Speaker 5 (24:28):
I'm gonna just walk off. And I found Cam and
the tej I walk next to him. You gravitate towards
the old heads, But are you intentional while trying to
stretch with different guys every day, whether it's veterans, young guys,
the linemen, outside linebackers. That's one thing I've noticed, it's Cam. Yeah,
I mean that that is intentional.

Speaker 4 (24:47):
You know, I've kind of found myself in like the
chef line over to the right anywhere from the like
third to the seventh time.

Speaker 5 (24:53):
But I like to grab somebody new and and uh,
you know, just have a quick chat with them. Uh.
You know so many times where I feel like the
expectation is the leaders gotta be the front of line.

Speaker 4 (25:12):
But you know, sometimes to lead properly you have to serve,
you know, and serving sometimes I'm always been at the back,
and sometimes when you at the back, you can get
a good view of what's going on all the time.
You get a posse of the team. But uh, I
don't need to be out front.

Speaker 5 (25:25):
The entire time. When I'm there, I wanna I wanna.

Speaker 4 (25:28):
Make connections with the guys, and sometimes those guys hanging
back or hanging them back for a reason play.

Speaker 5 (25:32):
So those are the conversations I wanna have.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
An your previous steps.

Speaker 5 (25:36):
Were you out in front all the time? It's something
elite to each other always I'm always moving around. I'm
not I'm not super rigid about where I gotta be.
I gotta be in the front of the line every time,
you know.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
Like we're doing the quarterback, uh, running back exchanges and
the first time I did in the quarterbacks when you
wanna take item with jailing every time, I think, oh Andy,
part of that's, you know, you get hand out to
different players, and other part is I'm tired. I don't
need to go back to the front of the line
after you know, I just took two reps. You guys
took one eat you know. But uh, but again, I
think that's part of it. It's just you got to

(26:06):
get to know every man on the rocks. I never
got ninety It's a point, there'll be fifty three and
sixteen on the piece.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
By you know, you gonna have a relationship with.

Speaker 5 (26:12):
All those guys, So you can't just have a head
nod and a you.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
Know, a wave every now and then. You get it's
important to get to know him by name. And it
makes it hard here in Pittsburgh because there's no names
in the back of jerseys. So you're you know, I'm
always reintroducing myself. Making sure I got somebody's name and
I remember somebody's name is an important part of finding
that connection.

Speaker 2 (26:31):
Two more, two more.

Speaker 5 (26:32):
Aaron wasn't like, does everybody know more? I mean your
reaction with the guys, I mean your four time MVP
Hall of Famer you get a are they kind of
an awe for a quick second?

Speaker 2 (26:44):
You get that?

Speaker 4 (26:44):
Ever, I think in the beginning, yeah, there's there's some
trepidation for sure, but uh, you know, Mason was one
of them.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
I had to really break him down. He was kind
of that's.

Speaker 4 (26:57):
He now, basonally right. I mean, he's been one of
my favorite guys n I got here. But a lot
of guys are a little you know, shy of maybe
come up to you. So you got to break the
ice off them with them. Some of them is just
like going out.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
And sitting next to him at lunch and they kind
of goa, what the hell you doing here? Have lunch?

Speaker 3 (27:14):
What do you Yeah?

Speaker 5 (27:15):
But I think that's part of you got to find
ways to break the ice with those.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Guess last one, last one you would talk I.

Speaker 5 (27:20):
Think with a mini camp by the helmet you didn't
like what you had.

Speaker 4 (27:24):
Yeah, I still don't like you know, I don't like. No,
I'm trying to change. We're in the process. Still looks
like a dance face ship out there. You gotta change
the face mask doesn't been down it because that's an
old face mask obviously, just like I'm a little but
we're trying to find the right helmet right now.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
How big of a deal is that Matt with him
and like hating all these new helmets that he's been
trying to wear throughout this process?

Speaker 3 (27:46):
A dog nude tricks like a thing. Yeah, you get
really used to your equipment, and especially a helmet. I
mean it becomes like a personal item to you and
your your vision of it. And I always go back
to it. Was after Antonio Brown left and he went
with the Raiders, people thought he was a lunatic because
he didn't like his helmet. Yeah, probably a lunatic for
other reasons. But I mean that's a big deal. These

(28:07):
guys are so attached to their exact equipment. And you
played hockey. It's you know, you mentioned your stick and
things like that, same type of deal, right, And I
don't want to use new skates or you know, a
new bat or a new glove. It's more like a glove. Yes,
it's totally different, right, right, right, different different, Yeah, you know,
a baseball glove, you know, yeah, it really becomes yours,
you know.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
I think especially for from his standpoint, like what he's
used to seeing through the scope that helmet, right, maybe
now the angles are a little bit different.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
That's why I brought up brown is like I think
when he looked over his head to track the ball,
he couldn't see it as well, you know, like it
was a vision thing, you know.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
Yeah, and that all makes sense. I mean you could
and this is something too. It's one of those if
you know, like if you ever played football growing up,
you can relate to You put that helmet on, and
your vision.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
Is much different.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
I mean, there are a lot of blind spots right right,
A in a in a helmet of that size, in
that magnitude, and yeah.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Your face mask you pick and all those type of
things too, you.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
Know, absolutely, and especially for a quarterback where obviously you're right,
your vision is paramount to everything that you were trying
to do. Looks like last ones on the field. Now,
Mason Rudolph is down there with a whole group of
younger people.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
Yeah, boy, he's got a big pile, big.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
Pile signing some autographs. Skyler Thompson still hanging out on
the cooler, drinking some water, taking in the final moments.
Other than that, I think is that Max Hurlaman over
there working on some stuff as well too. But it's
basically all cleared out here from the fans.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Kids doing well in autographs, players, yes, absolutely, most people
with Mosey don't up to the locker room and probably
gonna relax a.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
Little bit exactly right as they've earned it, certainly, and
they'll have their kind of last walk through here tomorrow
morning before they get to hit the Latrobe five hundred.
But Matt and I are about twenty thirty minutes away
from getting at a Dodge and getting back to our
homes and our families, which is much needed at this time.
I think it's safe to say we're going to take it,
take our last break, come back for our final training

(30:06):
camp segment. If you've got any questions, you know where
to get at us on Twitter. We'll also do a
little around the league, as it's been a few shows
since weeah a couple going on, some of the other
things going on across the National Football League. We'll do
all of that and more to wrap this whole shebang over,
a whole shebang up. Yeah, it up. That's what I'm
looking for. I was trying too hard. They're trying way

(30:27):
too hard. Special Edition Training Camp Edition of The Drive
Wes Shuler, Matt Williamson, our final segment from Saint Vincent
College when we return here on Steelers Nation Radio on
the Steelers Audio.

Speaker 1 (30:36):
Network, Iheartradios Live coverage Job Dot twenty twenty five Steelers
Training Camp is presented by Fatex where Now meets Next
and also brought to you by First National Bank, by
Kalucy Chevrolet iron Workers Union Number three, by Easy Home

(30:58):
Exteriors by SNT Bank, we Max Select Realty, by Tons Appliances,
The Pittsburgh Steelers pro shot by Always Safe Flagging and
Traffic Control and by us steel.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Final segment here from campus for our long going ongoing
training camp covers.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
Yeah, it's been fun.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
Seven hours a day here on campus, plus evening shows
every night at all of our favorite spots around around
La Trobe and off A Route thirty.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
We've been presenting a lot of content for our listeners.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Huh we sure have.

Speaker 3 (31:35):
You've been a worse I sure have.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
The paycheck is gonna be nice, yea yeah, but I
am I am, I am, I am more tired at
this point in the air than I typically am. Yes,
no doubt. It's been a lot of fun, but it
is also it's always a lot of fun and a
lot of grind uh in there as well. So let's

(32:01):
put a bow on this thing. Let's wrap it up.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
Yeah, it's been good.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
It's been fun. Get to some Twitter questions here, it's
around the league stuff with you. Matt tweets us and says,
my question is are we going to have a true
number wide receiver two? Do we have another? Or do
we have a wide receiver two or is it wide
receiver two? By committee thought we would have addressed this
by now, it seems like we're heading into the season

(32:26):
with Roman and Calvin. Can they carry the load?

Speaker 3 (32:29):
I have some concerns, yeah, I mean especially I keep
going back to what if DK gets hurt, you know,
I mean, and he did miss some time last year.
Anybody can get hurt anytime, as we know, it's the NFL.
I mean, I think it stands right now, it's pretty
clear that DK is far and away the number one.
Austin is the two, although we haven't seen him a lot.
And when there's two receiver sets, I think those will

(32:49):
be the guys that are out there. Wilson seems to
really have a stronghold on three. I would think Woods
is your four reliable, but he hasn't blown me away.
I don't even know that he's a lock to make
the team, but I would still be very much interested
in some sort of number two type guy to move
everyone down the packing order a little, you know, I

(33:11):
would be very open to those possibilities. And if you
were to, you know, add someone via trade, you pretty
you've got a pretty good amount of time between now
and opening day too.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
Get that guy revved up absolutely absolutely again.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
I mean, it's it's probably the position or most concerned about.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
I think so, particularly again from that depth element, like
if you have a situation like last year where your
number one wide receiver goes down for a couple of.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
Weeks, that could be catastrophic.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
That could be a big problem.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
And I mean even if Austin doesn't go or whatever,
it is Wilson ready to be the two, as Wood's
ready to be the three, it's like it's okay.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
Yeah, And how does that effect what you can do
with your tight ends?

Speaker 3 (33:49):
Is right, and that makes life a little easier. Of course,
so many athletic tight ends.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
But if defenses can pay more attention to and q
on those tight ends more because don't have to pay
as much tension to the wide receivers, it kind of
all works in concert together.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
If you will, absolutely another body there would be and
would be a welcome addition to me.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
And still definitely think it's a possibility.

Speaker 3 (34:09):
Yeah, I don't think that that ship is sailed.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
But yeah, if you could tell me right now that
they uh I.

Speaker 3 (34:15):
Think you mentioned it's a good twenty days until opening
day something like that. Yes, I mean so, just because
this is a last pack practice in Latrobe, doesn't mean
that the ship is sailed on adding people to the
roster or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
I completely agree. I completely agree, Andrew said tweets. It
says peel back the curtain for us. What's one thing
that you've been procrastinating throughout camp that you're not looking
forward to when you get home.

Speaker 3 (34:40):
Hmm, Oh, I got a good one. I gotta I
gotta get. I gotta write a giant check for my
son's first tuition bill. Oh, we have like this. I
don't think much about it's a giant check, but I
don't know. I am not a finance type dude. But
we got like, you know, the five two nine college
account blah blah bl and I gotta figure out just

(35:01):
how to write them and all that, And gonna sit
down with my dad tomorrow afternoon and write a big
check and make sure it's coming from the right place
and all that. But not exactly a fun exercise.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
Anything involving that large sum of money is stressful.

Speaker 3 (35:15):
And yeah, yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (35:16):
It's a big old man. I remember going through that
with my dad.

Speaker 4 (35:20):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
For me, Matt, it's getting my car fixed.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
Oh, you got car stuff.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yeah. I'm still for those who might remember that one
of the first nights of camp, like the first week
of camp, I got hit and run here unfortunately when
my car was was parked, and uh so Friday, I
gotta go get that taken care of. And I'm just
not looking forward to it. It's no I mean, it's
you know, insurance is handle it in it and all
that stuff. It's you know, but it's just a paint.

(35:45):
Like I got to get a rental car for a
day or two, and it's just a hassle. I'd have
to move both the car seats out of my car
and into.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
The because they never go back the way they car
seats are not a good memory for me.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
No, no doubt. I will be very happy the day
that I no longer have to You don't want to
wish the days away with your kids, but I will
be happy on that day that I don't have to
mess with car seats anymore.

Speaker 3 (36:08):
Yeah, and we're in very different places as parents. But
this time next next week, my son will be in
his second day at Kentucky and it'll just be weird
not having him around every day and all that stuff too.
You know, all of a sudden, we go from four
people to three and now I got a mot lawn
and they all take out the garbage and able bodied
eighteen year old and it's kind of useful sometimes, you know.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Big change in life my seat. My sister's getting ready
to start her senior year of college. Yeah, yeah, starting
his starting his freshman year. So yeah, interesting season of
life for both of them, definitely.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
And I'm going to take a personal day early next
week to drive him there bench night and drop him
off and as you have, you.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Know, and that'll be I think you guys will have.
It'll be a little hectic because moving day always is.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
But I don't know what to expect with that, all
different shifts, but still it's got to be a madhouse,
right it is.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
But that's the nice thing is they you know, you
got time, they keep it moving. They'll have you know,
they'll have one hundred different like ras and volunteers around
to help you move and all that.

Speaker 3 (37:07):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
A couple around the league things here. Matt Jordan Love
with a thumb injury. Yeah, procedure on his left thumb,
but not expected to miss any regular season time.

Speaker 3 (37:19):
We mentioned him a little bit in the Quarterback Tiers yesterday.
I am super high on his future. Played with some
injuries last year wasn't quite the same, but he is
really talented and you hope things like this don't linger,
you know, but it sounds like it's kind of a
day to day, week the week type of thing and
just shut him down for the preseason, get him the

(37:40):
week one.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
Yeah, unfortunate, but again, if he's ready to go for
the regular season, he's had to be fine. He's had
two years now as the guy. It's not like he's
just getting going in his career. And speaking of a
guy that I think we discussed maybe the first or
second week of camp, Bill's running back James Cook. Yeah,
returns to practice after his hold in.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
So I imagine negotiations are going better or they're in
a better place.

Speaker 2 (38:06):
That's what Sean McDermott said as well too.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Okay, so usually the way that works is like the
next day or so chefter reports they signed a deal,
blah blah blah. You know, yeah, because it's probably real close.
Bec just need to put paper or pen to paper.
The rams. Kyrien Williams recently signed a deal. I think
that's probably a real good jumping off point. They're similar
values to me, you know that it makes negotiations a

(38:29):
little easier when one of your peers already does the
work for you.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
You know, Yeah, that's a very good, very good point.
And then I guess finally here just Minnesota Vikings wide
receiver slash returner Rondell Moore season ending left knee injury
pre MRI test confirmed today.

Speaker 3 (38:51):
Feel bad for him?

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Second straight year he's had a.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Yeah, he's a five to seven really small, explosive receiver
that's had injuries and his it makes you wonder, this
is another bad one. This could be. I hope not
for the guy. I just know how league works. Yea.
The might be the last year of him, you know
what I mean, there's one that's the way it works.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
Yeah, I I completely agree with you on that. It's
like you and I were talking about a little bit
about that with Corey Trice. You know, he's such a uni,
such a unique body type.

Speaker 3 (39:20):
Yeah, I know, the traits that you want and are
hard to find.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
They were very high on him when they drafted him.
They were very high on them this time last year.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
And don't forget though he's a seventh round pick because
of injury.

Speaker 2 (39:30):
Because of injury, and you know, if you're right, like
this league does not wait for anybody, and sometimes if
you that that can be enough to be the difference
of you know, you making or not making a roster
is just that whole. The best of the best ability
is availability.

Speaker 3 (39:48):
And after a while, I just can't wait for you anymore. Exactly.
That's the way it.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Works, exactly right, Matt. I think that'll do it.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
Yeah, man, this was great. It was I was enjoying
my time at camp, and I also enjoyed my ride
home and getting home, you know, right, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
I always enjoy doing shows and hanging with you as
well too.

Speaker 3 (40:06):
Sure, I feel like you and I.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
It's funny. I think people would think like that we
see a lot of each other during the football season,
but we really we really don't. Like it's trading camp
in the combine where you and I really get to
spend like, you know, maybe once a week we'll see
each other in the studios when that type of thing.
But you know, for the most part, this is this
is like the time where you and I get to
spend a lot of time together and I pick your
brain about all the football nerd stuff and you pick

(40:29):
my brain about some music stuff or whatever's going on.
Uh So I've enjoyed these last couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
Man, thanks much, absolutely, thanks for filling in. I think
Thursday we're going to do another show from studio.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Yeah, no, no new shows Wednesday or Friday, but Matt
and I will have a I guess a final kind
of training camp. Yeah, look ahead to the preseason game
show on Thursday.

Speaker 3 (40:49):
We have some ideas there you and maybe talk about
the roster and we even done some of that thing.

Speaker 2 (40:52):
Yeah, fantasy football stuff on Thursday. Yeah, and we're coming
up on fantasy football draft seasons for everybody. So we
will have a show Thursday. No show Wednesday or Friday,
but we'll have a show on Thursday. That's kind of

I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before.
