Speaker 1 (00:00):
He's the Steelers wee Can Review with Wesley Huhler on
Steelers Nation Radio at Steelers dot com. Hello Steelers Nation,
and welcome to the Steelers Week in Review, your one
stop shop for all the current news and headlines for
your Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm wesle Uler, host of the Steelers
Blitz on SNR. Let's get you up to speed on
all the latest for the Black and Gold. Stop me
if you've heard this before. But the Steelers secured another
(00:22):
victory in dramatic fashion on Sunday, defeating the Green Bay
Packers twenty three to nineteen at Akroshure Stadium. Mike Tomlin
talked about the effort that was needed to secure another
close victory.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Again, Man, what really pleased with our ability to kind
of start the game offensively and produce points? Initially, I
think that that's just good. It's good to play from
that posture. Obviously, it does determine the outcome of the game,
it has it, but it's just good to play from
that posture. And we were able to do that for
the second consecutive week, and you know, hopefully we continue
(00:54):
to build upon that and finding our rhythm to start
games and lean that discussion to bed. I think that's
what this journey that is a season is about. Man.
You you know, you have identifiable strengths, you have identifiable weaknesses.
Obviously you better hone and harden the strengths and be
able to deliver them consistently. You better work to minimize
(01:17):
your weaknesses in some way. And you know that's been
one that's very difficult to avoid, you know, moving a
thing fluidly early in games, winning early possession downs and
so forth, and so just like the trajectory of that
and understanding the significance of that On the other side
of the ball. Defensively, I think it's about player availability
(01:39):
or lack thereof. That's probably a key discussion point coming
out of the game. Obviously, we went into the game
minus some significant guys, and by significant guys, I'm talking
about central communicators. You guys know my mindset, attrition is
a component of this game. One man's missed fortune as
(02:01):
another man's opportunity. We will never run away from that
component of it. It's opportunities for guys to rise up
and be reasons why we're successful. I'm talking about the
challenge of communication. We went into the game minus Cole
Holcam We lost Kwan Alexander in play, Mika Fitzpatrick was
(02:21):
on the sideline in street clothes. And you're talking about
second and third level defenders who play in the interior
portions of our defense that provide a lot of communication,
and so the playmaking is going to happen. It has
to happen. It was challenging from a communication and experience
standpoint in that regard as that game unfolded, and that's
(02:44):
what made it really sweet to be able to make
the plays in the waning moments to win it. But
probably the reason why they got down there, to be
quite honest with you, is the lack of some of
those guys as well. And so we have to prepare
with an edge. We got to be smart with what
it is that we do, how we divide the labor up,
(03:05):
what these opportunities mean for those who get an opportunity
for expanded roles, and how to best position them and
highlight what it is they do well, and to minimize
their individual lack of experience at times, or at the
very least our lack of collective experience, which oftentimes is
kind of displayed in communication challenges and.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
As he always does. Mike Tomlin outlined injury concerns and
updates for the Steelers ahead of this weekend's clash with
the Browns.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
From a health standpoint, man, just a few things. Feel
good about Pat Farmouth, and we'll watch him go through
the week and look at the quality of his work
in the amount of it in high fields and let
that be a determining factor. But feel good about his
potential availability. Ken O'Neil went down at the end of
the game with a rib injury. Man, We'll be watching
(03:58):
him and see where that leads us. Kawhan Alexander obviously
is out with an achilles injury. I have more information
when we decide what course we're going to take and win.
I'm sure in the upcoming days there. Mint Adams has
an ancle injury he's working through. We'll see what that
does to his availability. Minka is battling to come back
(04:22):
to us with a hamstring. Same thing. How much they're
available during the course of the week is a determining factor,
and obviously the quality of that work.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
And speaking of injuries, a significant one for Cleveland as
their quarterback to Sean Watson will be out for the
rest of the season with a shoulder injury that requires surgery,
and it will now be p J. Walker under center
for Cleveland. The Steelers will hit the Ohio Turnpike to
take on the Browns, who are coming off a dramatic
comeback victory of their own against the Ravens. Mike Tomlin
outlined the challenge that awaits the Steelers by the Lake.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Born to Cleveland. Obviously, he's ANFC North football. They're familiar
with us, We're familiar with them. It's a big game
and their venue. We respect that. We're really excited about
the rivalries that really comprise our division. We've had two
divisional games, but we haven't had an opportunity to go
(05:14):
into a hostile environment, and so there's growth associated with that.
Will walk out of this experience knowing more about ourselves
individually and collectively. We better prepare with respect to that.
The environmental component and what that means, you know, what
that means to communication on offense and so forth. Some
(05:38):
challenges there, obviously, but it's beyond just environmental challenges. You know,
they got some people to contend with as well, starting
on the on the defensive side. Quite frankly, because I
think they're probably playing better than anyone right now. On defense.
They got an awesome collection of talent, and then they've
(05:59):
got awesome schematic approach to that collection of talent known
Jim Schwartz for a long time, talked about it last
time we played them. Really, to be quite honest with you,
I knew that they would be elite in week two
when we were playing them, but I didn't bother to
trying to convince you, guys. I just figured that the
journey would display it. And they are because they got
(06:20):
quality players. They got a quality coordinator who's experience, who's
really good at positioning those guys, at taking calculated risks,
at working to minimize run and running circumstances, and minimizing
past and past circumstances, and making the judgment calls in
which to do so. He's really good. He's really experienced.
(06:41):
They got quality guys at all levels, lived obviously by
mister Garrett, who is having a special season. He needs
no endorsement for me. All you got to do is
watch the Cleveland Browns play. Oftentimes he is the guy
making these significant play in terms of determining the outcome
of games. And so that is his resume. We don't
(07:04):
need to add to it. I'm sure we'll work hard
all week not to but I'm sure that everybody that
plays them does. You turn on the tape. Man. He
made a significant sack on fourth and four against the Bengals.
The Bengals blocked him with a tackle and the running
back he made the play. Anyway, look in the indie game,
(07:25):
they're backed up in the one dimensional moment. They blocked
him with a tight end and the tackle. He runs
through both of them and sack phone was a quarterback
for a touchdown. That's what guys like him do. We
know that we're not going to rediscover that this weekend
in stadium. We already know it, and so we're kind
of preparing with that understanding. But as I mentioned, Man,
(07:46):
he is not a one man game. Zadarius Smith is
a guy that we're very familiar with, having been in
this division before they acquired Tomlinson. Like we talked about
last time we played them, are they're really good on
the second level with five and six at inside linebacker,
top top Knox corner group that not only were drafted there,
(08:07):
but you know, these guys are kind of in the
prime of their careers mid to late twenties. You know
Denzel Ward and Newsome, you know first round talent who
are not young people, man who've been there a while now,
and I just think that that experience is being displayed
in play. Same thing at safety, Man del Pitt has
(08:28):
been around for a while and there they got some
high round draft picks back there. Been playing together for
a while now. You're seeing the fruit of that labor.
But can't say enough about what Jim Schwartz has done
and and really he needs no endorsement for me. The
tape is his, his and their storyteller. On the offensive
side of the ball, I think the thing that really
(08:50):
captures your attention is they're continued success running the football. Obviously,
got a lot of respect for Nick chubb Man and
his talents, but as I've mentioned in the past, got
a lot of respect for coach callahan Man and that
collection of guys that they have up front, specifically been
that guard tandem, which is probably arguably the best in
(09:12):
the football world. I think their talents and their expertise
is on display when you see them still maintain a
quality run game and forward's doing what he's doing, taking
nothing away from Ford. Obviously, he had a really good
game against us in Week two, and so we got
to contend with that. We got to contend with the
dimensions of Watson's game, his ability to throw at his
(09:34):
ability to run it and extend it, the plethora of
eligibles that he has to go to. It's gonna be
an awesome game. These type of games you run to
man with your competitor excited about watching this group show
respect to it. In preparation we do that, then oftentimes
(09:56):
we position ourselves to do what it is we desire
to do and play.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
It's a big one in the AFC North Kitchen. Steelers
Brown's one pm Sunday in Cleveland. I'm SNR host Wes Leuler.

in Review. Take care and I'll talk to ends next week.
