Speaker 1 (00:00):
He's the Steelers week in Review with Wesley Euhler on
Steelers Nation Radio and Steelers dot Com.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Hello Steelers Nation, and welcome to the Steelers Weekend Review,
your one stop shop for all the current news and
headlines for your Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm Wes Yuhler, host of
the Steelers Blitz on SNR. Let's get you up to
speed on all the latest for the Black and Gold.
It was a Christmas jubilation as Mason Rudolph led the

(00:29):
Steelers to a convincing home win over the Bengals to
kick off the holiday weekend. Mike Tomlins spoke on the
effort that was needed to secure victory while also discussing
this week's division of labor at the quarnerback position.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
I was just really proud of the guys. They stepped
up big in a big moment. They smiled in the
face of adversity and played well on a lot of
fronts and did what was required to secure victory. I
think highlighting that obviously was the play of Mason Rudolph.
But I don't think anything happened in game from his

(01:02):
quality of play or mindset that we didn't talk about
in here. We could go to things that made him
an attractive candidate under the circumstances. We talked about him
having a great deal of belief in himself and being
aggressive and mentality and play, and those things were confirmed
in game. I thought he did a really good job

(01:23):
of being comfortable being himself, communicating with people regardless of
the moments. I thought that showed the confidence that he
has in himself showed. And I also thought that he
remained aggressive throughout. I thought the third and one touchdown
to George in the third quarters kind of reflective of that,

(01:43):
playing beyond situational circumstances and being aggressive. I thought we
were aggressive there at the end of the half, at
the first half as well in pursuit of the three
points that we got. Another examples where his just aggressive
nature I thought was an asset to him, an asset
to us. In game. Uh, largely all three phases, I

(02:04):
thought we played connected. I thought we supported one another,
played complimentary football that could be reflected in the offense's
ability to you know, secure the ball, to not turn
the ball over. You want to help a defense man,
don't put them on short fields. We had done that
some in recent weeks. It was good to to minimize

(02:25):
that component. I like to I like the way they
responded to the UH to the touchdown in the second
half as well, responded to a touchdown with a touchdown,
And so just some complimentary ball being played really in
kind of all three phases. That also kind of reflective
of the type of outcome that we had. I can't

(02:50):
say enough about about some of the guys that stepped
up on defense, specifically Pat Peterson, Eric Rowe, Mouth Jack.
We talked also last week and hear about and specifically
regarding Miles Jack and Eric Rowe, how important their presidency
is for us. We didn't have them on practice squad

(03:12):
as developing players. We had them on the practice squad
as capable players, guys that we could call upon and
give us varsity like work and effort. And their play
reflected that. Man. We got a sack from Miles Jack,
we got an interception from Eric Rowe, we got an
interception from Pat in his first game full time as

(03:35):
a safety. And so I'm just really appreciative of that
collective's experience and versatility, their ability to execute defense. And
as we talked about last week, though I wasn't shocked
or surprised by it, but it's still appreciated when you
have six or seven days to prepare. It's a little
bit different than say, maybe the week before when we

(03:55):
lost two safeties in game. So doesn't that's in their contributions.
Appreciative of it, Appreciative of their focus, their communication skills,
the collective's ability to do so. Oftentimes the home venue
might be a challenge for defense under those circumstances, because
our home venue is a challenge for opposing offenses. And

(04:17):
I thought they did a really nice job of communicating,
and particularly Miles Jack after Landon Roberts went down, really
appreciative of his efforts, and.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
As he always does, Mike Tomlin outlined injury concerns and
updates for the Steelers ahead of this weekend's clash with
the Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Landon Roberts has a peck injury. He could be described
as out this week. We'll see where the week takes
Trent as he works his way back to us. Same
with Mica. Both guys could be described as limited starting
the week, and we'll see how limited tomorrow. Would look
at the quality of that work and let that be

(04:59):
our guide as progress through the week, and really we're
in the same position with Kenny as we were last week.
We'll give him a few reps and kind of see
where that leads us. But just as I said a
week ago, in this setting, Mason Rudolph was scheduled to
be the quarterback for the week, and we'll see where
Kenny is. We have the same mentality as we start

(05:19):
this week. Obviously, we have a great deal more comfort
because of what we've seen in stadium from Mason Rudolph,
and that helps us, but we still really are in
the same posture. He's got the ball to start the week,
and we'll see where Kenny is from a mobility perspective,
and then kind of go from there and plan day

(05:40):
by day based on the things that we see from
that perspective.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
This sense of urgency will certainly be high in this one,
as both Pittsburgh and Seattle are still fighting for a
playoff spot. Mike Tomlins spoke on the challenge that awaits
as the Steelers head out to face the Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Seattle, you know, they're a group that's very much position
like we are, so we anticipate a fight. They went
through a lull there. I think they lost three or
four in a row, and they've been on a wind streak.
We respect them and respect where they are. We obviously
respect their venue. Been there a bunch over the years.

(06:18):
It lives up to its reputation in terms of hostility,
crowd noise, et cetera. You can't be behind the sticks
in an environment like that. I'll start first with their defense.
They're fundamentalist group and they they provide a lot of
pressure up front with four or five man rushes. They
play a lot of people up front. I think that

(06:39):
can be best reflected by the acquisition of Leonard Williams
to an already deep group. They got forty five or
so sacks. So you get one dimensional facial rush like
that in an environment like that, it's not a good thing.
And so we got to stay on schedule. We can't
be highly penalized. We got to have an effective run game.

(07:01):
We got to block him, you know, they they as
I mentioned, they got a lot of people up front,
They pay, they play a lot of people, and so
we got to block him as well. They got a
veteran guy on the second level in Wagner. Man can't
say enough about him. Man, he grows old very gracefully

(07:22):
within their system of football. Very rarely is he out
of place. His eyes are always in the right place.
He knows what he's doing. He kind of reminds me
of Thomas Davis in Carolina. You know, when we got
a guy that plays an extreme high level within a
system of defense so long, it just it's just it's
a perfect venue and opportunity for him to to to

(07:45):
play and play at a high level, and he is
doing that. Really impressed by their secondary. They've had some
interchangeable parts in recent weeks because of lack of player
availability with US Spoon for example, you know, has been
missing some. Ardie Burns has played a lot at Nickel

(08:07):
has shown some versatility there. Willing is a long combative
corner outside the safeties. Digs love man make a lot
of plays for them. They get to a lot of things.
They got a really good feel for the game. They
keep a lid on it. They just they just really

(08:28):
sound in what they do defensively as a collective. They
tackle well, their ball aware. Things that have come to
be really routine for Pete Carroll lead groups of defenses.
Things that I've come to understand over the years. I
think is reflective in terms of the things that you
see on tape on the offensive side of the ball.

(08:50):
Man just got a lot of respect for Gino Smith.
Have seen them some recently twenty twenty one. We played
an overtime game versus those guys. Last year for half
of play in the preseason. Man just have so much
respect for him and the trajectory of his career, how
he carries himself. Man, he's a big time competitor. He's

(09:12):
a prudent use of mobility guy. You better respect his
ability to move while at the same time his experience
shows in terms of keeping his eyes down, feel and
really stretching you late in the down. Man, he's got
some big time receivers. Obviously in that trio, we're gonna
have to, you know, make some tough decisions about who

(09:34):
to work to schematically minimize and win. You know, when
you got a collective like that and the way they
spread the ball around, it's difficult. Particularly with the young
rookie from o State coming on in the ways that
he's coming on in the last couple of weeks. You
throw him in the mix with that veteran tandem of
metcalf And and Lockman. We got to make some good

(09:57):
tough decisions in terms of where the place I was
and when there's thematics are not placed there. We need
individuals to play really well as it pertains to covering
those people and being close, you know, with Geno being
the veteran that he is, we better mix our calls
and have a big menu ready to go. Hopefully we'll
be a little better positioned to execute that type of

(10:20):
a menu with an additional week, with the collection of
people that we're playing with this week. We'll probably give
Blake Martinez another opportunity this week with the landing being
in the state that he's in. But Blake's been in
the stadium with us before and been here for a
while now and so probably less troublesome than it was
the last time that we called on him, for example.

(10:41):
And so there's a lot of things that have our attention,
things that are relative to us, things that are relative
to Seattle. The bottom line, man, it's late December, it's
the road is getting extremely narrow, and it's a big
football game. Excited about getting this group ready to play
and then ultimately going on out here and playing.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Westward we go once again. Steelers Seahawks four oh five
pm Sunday in Seattle. I'm s and our host wes
Ley Uler, thanks for listening to this episode of the
Steelers Week in Review. Take care and I'll talk to
youans next week
