Speaker 1 (00:09):
This is the Steelers Standard with Ed Trup and Jacob
Reck on Steelers Nation Radio, part of the Steelers Audio Network. Jacob,
I finally, after two or three years, gave into my
sons yesterday to get NFL Red Zone, and I'm happy
I did it. I for the last couple of years
that they wanted to get it, and I said, look,
I'm old school. Watched the network game and then the
(00:31):
network game on a Steeler bye week is a a
go out.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Right, wasn't it the Ravens and Tensons game? Where what
was the game going? Opposite?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Was it the Eagles and it was who are they played?
Speaker 1 (00:43):
The Eagles and Broncos. Eagles and Broncos, which was a
good game, Yeah, but I foually a game Broncos statement
win of the year.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
So far for them.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
I finally gave in yesterday, and then I found myself
watching NFL Red Zone the entire day. And I'm not
trying to promote them. We're not getting paid for that
or anything here. I'm just throwing it out there. I
end up watching it all day long. It was wonderful watched,
you know, from a fantasy perspective, and there might have
been a few bets on the table. I'm not going
to say that yes or no, but yeah, you got
to watch all the action throughout the day. It was
great and there were some good games yesterday as we
(01:12):
recap Week five across the NFL, it's our running gade
review around the AFC, North AFC and all NFL games.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
And Jacob we talked about it on Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
A lot of these matchups weren't sexy by any means,
you know, you know, a lot of one in for
three matchups or two and two matchups, but by all means,
it was an entertaining Week five across the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Like like you said, we were struggling to really find
headlines when we were doing our Week five preview segment
last week, and and actually, excuse me, actually ended up
being a pretty good weekend in football.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
It all started last Thursday night.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
We recapt this on Friday, so we won't go over
it now, but the forty nine Ers beat the Rams
twenty six the twenty three forty nine Ers now four
and one, Rams three and two. That was a good
game that went to overtime with the forty nine Ers
winning in overtime, So that was a good game to
kick off Week five around the AFC North. First, we'll
start in the early game, the NFL London game, the
(02:09):
international game over in London, second straight week for the Vikings.
Of course, played the Steelers in Dublin in Week four.
They stay internationally to play a second game in London
against the Cleveland Browns, who are now one to four
on the season. Vikings improved the three and two twenty
one seventeen your final score. Vikings beat the Browns. The
biggest takeaway here is the Browns controlled most of this game.
(02:30):
They led the Vikings pretty much throughout until the towards
the end of the game when the Vikings scored late.
And again we talked about it at the open. Not
a bad debut for Dylan Gabriel at quarterback four. The
Cleveland Browns their first of two quarterbacks drafted in the
third round, and of course shoud Door Sanders was in
the fifth round. But Gabriel yesterday nineteen of thirty three
(02:51):
one hundred and ninety yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, two
rushes for five yards. The rookie Jenkins out of Ohio
State twenty three carries for one hundred and ten yards.
Carson Wentz throws for two thirty six and a touchdown.
In one other note to Justin Jefferson over one hundred
yards against the Steelers and also over one hundred yards
yesterday seven catches for one hundred and twenty three yards.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, he's good. I mean, we know that he's good.
He's all right. I mean, he's on my fantasy football team,
so we go. I do pay attention to those.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Actually to me though, and I don't know if this
felt the way to you watching the game, you know,
because I was at the game in Dublin, didn't really
feel like Justin Jefferson was having a big impact on
the game. I know they had that early drive, that
early success on offense Minnesota did which only resulted in
a field goal, and then they had that fifteen point comeback.
(03:41):
But really, to me, Jordan Addison was the difference maker
on offense for them.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Again, I'm asking if Jefferson seemed to be have a
bigger impact than what I know. He got to over
one hundred yards, But it didn't feel that way to
me watching the game in the stands.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Now, I felt like against the Deers he had a bigger,
especially in that first half.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I think he got nine. That's what I'm saying. That's
what I say.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yesterday, I agree with you. No, I didn't think so right, No, No,
he ends up. Let's see, he had what seven catches
one hundred and twenty three yards Addison five catches for
forty one yards and a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, it shows how how Jefferson right, It shows you
how valuable Addison is. In those first three weeks, and
you remember he was suspended, he was he wasn't out
there on the field with them, And the last two
weeks he's been such a big impact player. He had
the eighty yard catch and run chased down by Peyton Wilson,
and in this past weekend had the game winning touchdown
against the Browns.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Quinn Shawn Jenkins again the rookie running back. Twenty three
carries one hundred and ten yards averaged four point eight
yards per carry yesterday for the Cleveland Browns. And again
Dylan Gabriel no two touchdowns, no interceptions, was only sacked
twice yesterday against the Vikings. The other big game in
the AFC North that we that we talked about, that
was in the one o'clock window. And again, you could
(04:55):
have watched all three AFC North games. Yesterday he had
the Browns at nine thirty. You had this game the
Texans and the Ravens in the one o'clock window, and
then Cincinnati playing in that four o'clock window. But first
the Ravens. They go down forty four to ten to
the Texans. This game wasn't even close, Jacob. The Texans
controlled early, they held the lead the entire way. Baltimore
(05:18):
struggled on offense, they struggled on defense again, giving up
forty four points. C J strout two hundred and forty
four yards passing four touchdowns, no interceptions. Nick Chubb for
Houston eleven carries sixty one yards and a touchdown, and
on the Baltimore side, really nothing stands out. Fifteen carries
thirty three yards for Derrick Henry in a touchdown, So
(05:38):
he's held in check with only thirty three yards and
when you don't see that often with Dereck Henry, he averaged.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Two point two yards per carry yesterday. Yeah, he's had
a tough go of it this year.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Remember he had the three fumbles in the first three
weeks of the year and now, like you mentioned, really
poor performance this past Sunday against the Texans.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Cooper Rush struggled one hundred and seventy nine yards, no touchdowns,
three interceptions. He was only sacked once yesterday. But the
Texans now two and three after starting zero to three,
so they've gotten two in a row. Baltimore now one
and four, three three straight losses on the season for
the Baltimore Ravens, who now fall to one and four.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I mean we've discussed the Baltimore Ravens at length earlier
today in our first segment. But it's really bad and
it's looking worse with without Lamar Jackson. They have the
Rams next week, who are a good team. I know
they lost this pass week against the Niners on Thursday night,
but I think the Rams are a good enough team
that they can win that game, especially without Lamar. And
(06:39):
if you fall into that one in five hole, I
think they have Who do they have coming up after that?
It's is it the Bears? They have ye be Bears.
I mean that's a toss up game, right. I think
the Bears are a legitimate team. I don't know if
they're going to be the best team in football or
even the best team in their division. Nonetheless, but they're
a competitive team. They're on a two game They've turned
(06:59):
things around after falling zero to two to start. They're
two and two now. I think that's just anytime that
the Ravens have a toss up game, if Lamar is
not out there, I think you have to lean toward
the other team winning that game just because you can.
You've seen what John Harbad does without his superstar quarterbacks
between Flacco and Lamar. It's just it's not impressive at all.
(07:23):
So they're one and four right now. They could be
looking down the barrel of a one and six start
to the year, and that's gonna be a tough hole
to climb out of.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
If granted, if.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
They do win lose those two games, they could they
could win those games and be okay, and Lamar could
come back after that bye week and they could be
right around five hundred and he can steer the ship
in the right direction. But right now, it doesn't look
like they're going to be doing anything with that Lamar.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
No, I agree, he's a big part. I mean, it's
basically when you take TJ. Watt out of the Steeler defense,
right and take Lamar on that offense, it's just everything
else seems to crumble. The Detroit Lion Cincinnati Bengals the
other game in the AFC North yesterday, and again good
news for Steeler Nation as Cincinnati loses their third straight.
They're now two and three on the season. Detroit form
(08:07):
one and the Lions controlled this game from the beginning.
The final score is thirty seven to twenty four, but
it does not reflect what happened in this game. Detroit
had a fourteen to three halftime lead. They had a
twenty eight to three lead going into the fourth quarter.
So Cincinnati gets three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and
mop up time, but that's pretty much all it was.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Was mop up time.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Jake Browning twenty six of forty two hundred and fifty
one yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, was sacked twice. But
here's the other glaring stat from yesterday. With the Cincinnati
Bengals running the football only eighty five total yards, Jake
Browning is your leading rusher, your quarterback. Four carries for
thirty one yards. Chase brown very ineffective. Eight carries for
(08:46):
twenty seven yards. Jamar Chase gets hot in the fourth quarter.
Was very ineffective up until that fourth quarter. It was Yeah,
it was garbage Yeah, six catches, one hundred and ten
yards and two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Yeah it is. It was garbage time.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yards and what scores whatever they were able to put
up against the Lions, just because, like you said that,
that game was over well before the final score, well
before the fourth quarter even began, I mean twenty eight
to three.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Now here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
If Joe Burrow is the quarterback and you see that
the Bengals make that comeback effort, you think this is
a legitimate this.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
This could be bad. Yeah, but it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
It was Jake Browning, So you never really felt threatened
if you're the Lions there. But yeah, just I think
we were just talking about how bad the Ravens look
without the mar The Bengals look even worse without Joe Burrow, right,
I mean that because that offense just does not click
like it does with Joe Burrow. And we even though
(09:48):
we've been kind of poo pooing the Ravens defense a lot,
today the Bengals defense is even worse. So both of
these teams in the Aves and Orth really struggling without
their star quarterbacks. But also ruggling on defense too, and
that's why they're off to these really bad starts.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
In AFC North now Steelers three and one in the
driver's seat, Cincinnati two and three, second place, Baltimore third
at one and four in the Cleveland Browns one and four,
the Steelers next opponent this upcoming Sunday, and then around
the rest of the AFC. There are two four and
one teams now in the AFC, no more unbeaten teams
in the NFL. After Week five, Indianapolis is four and one.
(10:26):
Now they win forty to six against the Raiders at home.
How about this, Jacob. It was three nothing early Raiders,
but then Indianapolis twenty points in the second quarter and
twenty points in the third quarter. Back to back quarters
with twenty points, they go on forty to six. Daniel
Jones two hundred and twelve yards passing two touchdowns. Yesterday
Jonathan Taylor seventeen carries for sixty six yards and three
(10:49):
touchdowns on the ground. That's a huge day for Jonathan
Taylor and the Raiders. They continue to struggle. After starting
the season with a win, They've now lost four straight.
One and four is p Carroll Raiders.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, you really have to respect what the Colts are doing, right.
I don't think you can call it a fluke. As
we mentioned, we are now in the heart of the season,
right we are over a month in. Some teams, including
the Colts, haven't had their bye week, so that five
week window, you can't call it too small of a
sample size. We are in it now, and that Colts offense,
you really have to respect it. I got the numbers
(11:21):
for you here, thirty three points against the Dolphins in
week one, twenty nine points in week two, forty one
points in week three. They're one loss last week twenty
points against the Rams, but then they bounce back with
another forty point performance against the Raivers. The Raiders, rather,
that is a legitimate offense and who would have thought
Daniel Jones would have been the guy leading it. But
(11:42):
I think the most valuable player right now is Jonathan Taylor.
He might be the front runner for offensive player of
the year so far.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Other matchups yesterday in the early window also included, excuse me,
the Giants and the Saints, the Saints winning home twenty
six to fourteen. The Giants now one and four on
the season. The Saints get their first victory this season
at one and four. Jackson dart good debut last week
in the Giants victory, not so much yesterday. Nope, did
(12:11):
not look that great. Two hundred and two yards passing,
two touchdowns, two interceptions. He was sacked once. Meanwhile, on
the other side, Spencer Ratler comes in twenty one to
thirty one, two hundred and twenty five yards passing and
a touchdown. New Orleans first win of the season at home,
and they do it in convincing fashion twenty six to
fourteen against the Giants. I like the Giants yesterday going
(12:31):
into New Orleans, so I was a little bit surprised
by this one, Jacob. With the Saints getting their first
win of the season.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Yeah, I think you can kind of just chuck it
up to being these are just two bad teams, and
maybe it was the event that's fair. Maybe he was
a little bit of an overreaction washing Jackson Dart win
in his first game last week. We all saw the
interaction that he had with his head coach Brian Dable.
Looked like they were about to make out on the
sidelines after getting that win. Be at probably an overreaction.
(13:01):
I just think This was a bad team going up
against another bad team. And I think we all thought
the Saints could be the worst human football this year,
but them and similarly the Titans also got their first
wins of the year. So it's just, you know, these
teams aren't going to go oh and seventeen this year,
which is good for them. They're not going to be
historically bad, but they're still going to be really bad.
(13:22):
And I think the Giants just are going to be
at the bottom of the barrel as well. And you
remember Monique Neighbors also out.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
That's a huge part.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Of their offense, and without him, I mean, you really
can't say much about that offense.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah, good, good call there.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
You take him out again, these other missing Lamar and
Baltimore again, TJ walk goes down for the Steelers. You
take Neighbors out of that offense, and look out. The
only winless team in the NFL after five weeks is
the New York Jets.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Oh to five.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Now the Cowboys go into Meadowlands yesterday they win thirty
seven to twenty two. A little bit of a shootout,
especially in the second half for Steeler fans out there.
Just to keep you updated on justin fields. Not too
bad yesterday, two hundred and eighty three yards passing, two touchdowns,
no interceptions, seven rushes for twenty six yards on the ground,
but he just doesn't have enough in and around him.
(14:10):
Garrett Wilson contributes for six catches seventy one yards and
a touchdown. For Steeler fans out there, we must tell
you again five touchdowns for George Pickens now on the
season as he gets another touchdown yesterday. Only two catches
for fifty seven yards but a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
I mean, Pickens is having a good year, and I
think a lot of us saw say I think a
lot of us actually saw it. I hate to say
you're right, but I think we kind of saw it coming,
just because you know in Dallas that defense is gonna
be bad.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
It was not great with mikeah Parsons there.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Of course, he was their best player, but when they
traded him away, I think we all kind of thought, like,
this is going to be a really bad defense in Dallas.
But we all know that when healthy, Dak Prescott is great.
When fully healthy, when playing a full seventeen or sixteen
game season, he is as good as any quarterback and
can really lead his offense to a lot of points.
It's just they never really win. You never really see
(15:00):
them succeed just because that defense is so bad and
you have seen just the Cowboys unable to really produce
in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
But for the regular season.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Dak is great and without Ceedee Lamb out there, George
Pickens is wide receiver one and he's playing like it.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Some of us drafted Javonte Williams in our fantasy leagues
this year.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
I know you've been bragging about it all year.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
And I gotta tell you, not one, it was pretty good,
not two, but three of my I'm I'm in five leagues,
so three out of my five leagues I got Javonte Williams.
You had another big day yesterday sixteen carries, one hundred
and thirty five yards and a touchdown. He's their top
rusher in Dallas and he's had a very good season
so far. When they picked him up from Denver from
a year ago. Speaking of Denver, they go into Philadelphia
twenty one to seventeen. The Broncos upset the Eagles. Broncos
(15:47):
now three and two on the season. They score eighteen
points in the fourth quarter to come back and beat
the Eagles in the fourth quarter, who suffer their first
loss of the season. The defending Super Bowl champs now
four and one on the season. Despite good performances by
Jalen Hurts, who had two hundred and eighty yards passing
and two touchdowns, DeVante Smith eight catches one hundred and
(16:07):
fourteen yards, but JK Dobbins twenty carries seventy nine yards
and a touchdown for the Broncos again eighteen points in
that final quarter.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Yeah, I mean, I said it earlier today statement win
of the season so far for Denver. I mean, you
saw last week it was undefeated Tampa Bay against undefeated Philadelphia,
and Philly was the team that eventually won that game,
but it was a close game played by Baker Mayfield
and the Bucks. Now you have the Denver Broncos, who
(16:37):
you know, we've mentioned in the past. They had that
weird end to their game against Indianapolis in which it
came down to that field goal which was initially no
good but then ruled good because of the the weird
like contact whatever that that rule is where you can't
you know, use leverages, it use leverage on the block.
(16:58):
So they got to redo the field goal, and they
the Colts ended up winning that game. And then the
next week it was a great game against the Colts,
I'm sorry the Chargers and the Broncos held a lead
and then until the very end, and the Charges were
able to come up with two scores, two back to
back scores to take the lead and win and win
that game. So the Broncos, as I've mentioned before on
(17:19):
the show, I think they think they're better than what
the record represents. And they were able, as I said,
to go into Philly and have that statement win on
the year. I think that really is going to right
the ship for them because it's hard. You know, you
could say like, oh, our record should be better than
what it is, but your record is what your record is.
And so they were two and two going into this week,
but I think they feel a lot better being three
(17:41):
and two, like I said, with that statement win against
the Eagles, and they have a pretty easy slate coming up.
I just looked this up. They got the Jets, the Giants,
the Cowboys, the Texans, the Raiders. They could run the table.
They really could. So look out for Denver. And I
think having that win, because if you lose against the
Eagles ed and then you have that easy schedule.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
A lot of people could be.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Saying, yeah, well you got a lot of wins, but
you gotta beat a lot of crap teams. But you
won against the Eagles on the road and handed them
their first loss of the year.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Yeah, huge statement win for Denver. Can't say enough about them.
I'm not saying that.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Also, on the opposite side of things that the Eagle
season is over, you know, can you know cancel them
for their their back to back Super Bowl runs. I
think they'll be just fine, but you know, it's it's
hard to win in the NFL. It's hard to win
every week, and you have to respect them for going
four and oh and I'm sure they'll bounce back.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
I don't have a lack of faith in them to
start reeling now that they lost one game.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
The Broncos Eagles represents what we talk about any given Sunday, right,
any given Thursday, any given Monday. But as you said,
it's the NFL, and and you know, Denver going into
Philly either there's three places, in my opinion, Jacob, that
are extremely hard to win at.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Yeah, Philly, Arrowhead and the third other.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
One being Buffalo and two of those three because Kansas
City's at Jacksonville tonight yesterday had teams lose at home.
Buffalo loses it home against the Patriots on Sunday Night Football,
and then the Broncos go into Philly and win there.
So kudos to the Broncos, kudos to the Patriots. Two
very hard places to win football games. Next up, Dolphins
Panthers two to one and three, teams that we yawned
(19:23):
about on Friday, actually ends up being a pretty good
football game twenty seven to twenty four. The Panthers defeat
the Dolphins to now improve the two and three on
the air, the Dolphins are reeling at one and four.
We're talking about a lot of teams reeling. Well, the
Dolphins are another one one for you see McDaniels when
he walked into the locker room, it took his glasses
off and his head down happy.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
He looked completely defeated.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yeah, that's a game where both teams could have said
to themselves, we need to win this game in order
to not be one of the laughing socks of the NFL. Right,
And I think Miami had just a little bit of
higher expectations simply because you know, they've been in the
playoffs a couple of times under Mike McDaniel and with
two A techo Ilo at quarterback, whereas Bryce Young has
(20:05):
kind of struggled in his first three years of this
season playing with another new head coach. I think he's
played with two, if not three head coaches so far
in his first three years in the NFL. That's a
really rough go of it, rough go of it for
him to start off his career. And remember, Miami was
winning that game at some point yesterday and Carolina was
(20:26):
able to pull it off and actually come out the victor,
and it just really looks bad for Miami. I don't
think we saw them being I think we kind of
saw them taking a step backward, but not to this
degree and not having a comfort behind effort by Carolina
adding on to that misery for Miami, and they're now
(20:46):
sitting with a one in four record, and you know,
their only win coming against the only winless team in
the NFL, against the New York Jets, So they really
aren't feeling good about themselves right now.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Another game this feature two to one in three teams
were the Titans and the Cardinals, which ended up being
a thriller as well. The Cardinals that complete control this
football game twenty one to six. Did you see the
defender get the ball pooched out from behind for Arizona?
They were going in for a score to try to
go up by what twenty eight to six?
Speaker 2 (21:15):
At that point, it was like second that would have
definitely would have iced the game, right.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
The old Leon lead. That's too old for you, now,
I know, I know, I got it for.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
The Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day putting the ball out there.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Boy, you got to secure that football tea well then that.
But also in the Super Bowl right against the Bills.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yes, happened there as well. Don Beebe comes up behind
on Yeah, it happened twice with Leon Leed. Now you
mentioned it. Oh my goodness. Sixteen points by Tennessee in
the fourth quarter. They come back and win twenty two
to twenty one. They're one and four. Now they get
their first victory of the season. Arizona goes to two
and three. One thing on this game, Cam wore the
number one overall draft pick, two hundred and sixty five yards,
(21:53):
no touchdowns and interception, and then Calvin Ridley, Remember him?
I forgot about him. The old Atlanta Falcon now in Tennessee.
Five catches one hundred and thirty one yards yesterday to
lead all receivers in this football game.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Definitely, I mean they want to turnaround. What a sorry,
bad turnaround for Arizona. You remember they started off two
and oh, and a lot of people point out they're
two and oh, but their two wins were against the
Saints and the Panthers. Look how quickly they've fallen losses
to two division arrivals, the forty nine ers and the Seahawks,
and then at the time a winless team in the Titans.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
They lose that game. They're now two and three.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
I don't think anyone has really faith in the Arizona
Cardinals to turn things around here.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
One of the best games of the day, maybe the
best game of the day was Tampa Bay at Seattle Watch.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Probably it was.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Definitely the best uniform matchup by far old school right, yeah, bit,
But I actually liked the most about it wasn't just
the fact that they wore the uniforms, was that CBS
on the score Bug included the old school logo and
colors on the score.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Bug that was awesome as well.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
Yeah, Tampa Bay gets to win thirty eight to thirty five.
They're now four and one on the season. Seattle goes
to three and to Baker Mayfield big day three hundred
and seventy nine yards passing two touchdowns, no interceptions. Sam
Darnold a big day as well, three hundred and forty
one yards passing four touchdowns and an interception. Look out,
Tampa Bay Bucks are four and one. It may not
(23:15):
be clean for them. They've played a lot of close games,
but facts are facts. Baker Mayfield has the Bucks at
four and one.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
Yeah, I mean, I can't say enough about Baker.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
He might be right now simply because I think Justin
Herbert was an early candidate for an MVP. Baker Mayfield
might be my MVP vote right now if I had
to put a good call. Of course, you know I'm
not in the committee to pick that now, correct. I applied.
I applied and they never got back to me. But
maybe next year. But I think I think it's a
(23:43):
legitimate candidacy. Is Baker for MVP, because I think you
can't ignore. Like you said, they've had a lot of
gritty wins, but they've pulled them out. They've pulled them
all out and against good teams too, Seattle that's a
division rival. And then they were so close. Remember it
(24:03):
was only a six point game against Philadelphia, almost had
that win, just came down to the last second and
ended up not getting it. But they have another test
this week, they'll be playing the San Francisco forty nine ers,
and they have another test the following week against the Lions.
And if you remember last season, excuse me, the Lions
(24:27):
and Bucks faced off against each other. They were both
to and out early starts of the year, and Tampa
Bay was able to secure they were able to win
that game, and a lot of people were saying if
Tampa Bay was able to just keep it close, not
necessarily win, but keep it close, you had to respect
them ended up winning that football game. I think that
you'll see two more gritty performances. Who knows if they'll
(24:51):
actually win them, just because that's kind of the give
and take with a gritty team like this, You really
don't know how they'll do. You have confidence they'll keep
it close, but you can't say for sure they're going
to win. But right now, loving what you're seeing out
of Tampa Bay and I think right now, uh and Mecca,
Igbuka is probably your front runner for offensive Rookie of
(25:12):
the Year.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
At Buka one hundred and sixty three yards receiving yesterday
and a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
He was huge. He's been huge every week. Did you
do every week?
Speaker 1 (25:20):
Did you I was listening to the DV Morning Show
when they were wrapping up today, did you hear Gronk Butcher?
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Terrible? Oh my goodness, terrible. He gronked it up. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
So, Igbuka, by the way, is top four receiving yards
among all receivers, not just rookies. There you go, and
also is tied for second with touchdowns on the year
five touchdown receptions through five weeks.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
The Commanders go into La and they upset the Chargers,
now three and two on the year. They win twenty
seven to ten yesterday, defeating the Chargers who had a
ten to nothing lead early in this game, and then
back to back quarters they post ten points to the
Commander's ten in the second It was ten ten at halftime,
then they took twenty to ten lead after the third quarter.
(26:02):
They had a touchdown late to go on to win
this game twenty seven to ten. Look out, here come
the Commanders, now back on track after a slow start,
three and two on the season, and the Chargers the opposite.
They've now lost two in a row. After starting the
season three and zero. Are the LA Chargers. They are
now three and two with this loss at home. That's
the other key this game. You and I talked about
it on Friday. If it's in Washington, if it's in DC,
(26:24):
we might feel a little bit better about the Commanders.
But you and I both thought the Chargers this was
probably gonna be a win for them yesterday, and it
sure wasn't.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
Yeah, I just thought, you know where the game was played, aside,
that the Chargers were the better team into this game,
And I think you could agree with me too, that
LA isn't really the most daunting home field advantage, right,
That's that's kind of like a almost like an a
cross country. Sure, it's tough for them to do that,
but just in terms of a home field advantage, there's
(26:51):
really I don't know if you saw the footage from
Thursday night when the Ram I'm sorry, when the Rams
hosted the forty nine ers more four games or so
fights this weekend, there was no blue in the sands.
It was all forty nine or red and gold. So yeah,
really not an imposing place to play. But like you said,
making that trip as an East Coast team out to
the West Coast not the easiest thing to do. But
(27:14):
credit to the credit to the Commanders, and just you
have to be on high alert. I think if you're
the Chargers, because I think we always do this thing,
we kind of fall into the trap saying, oh.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
I'm gonna believe in the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
I'm gonna believe in the Chargers, and then they do
the Charger thing when they kind of fumble the season
away or they'll they'll stumble into the playoffs and get
blown out. You remember last year, I'm sorry a couple
of years ago, with that crazy halftime lead that they
had against Jacksonville and then Trevor Lawrence came out with
a four touchdown second half performance. Last year, they were
(27:47):
the heavy favorite despite playing on the road against the
Houston Texans, but then Texans blew them out in that
postseason matchup.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
This is just something that the Chargers happened to do.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
They just can't really keep things to get They can't
really keep things tightened up and yeah, really really bad
loss for them. Again, I think you and I meant
you mentioned that you and I both picked the Chargers
to win that game, but they look terrible on offense
and then flipping the ball to the other side. The
Commanders just you have to applaud them. They're three and
(28:19):
two right now. They're only bad loss coming against the Packers,
who are a really good team. I think they would
have liked to have that Week four loss against the
Falcons back.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
I think they're probably the better team there.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
But with Jayden Daniels, I mean, all bets are off
that's a huge part of their offense. And then when
they get Terry McLaurin back as well, who's missed. I
think now in the last two to three weeks, that
offense should be clicking on all cylinders.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Sunday Night Football A thriller are very good.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Hey, Mike Rabel finds a way to beat the Bills,
goes in the Buffalo, they win twenty three to twenty.
They kick a field goal right at the end to
beat the Bills, who suffer their first loss of the season.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
They're now four and one.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
The Patriots now three and two, and again and you
can start doing some Steeler math and who beat who?
The Steelers go into New England beat the Patriots. Well,
now the Patriots go into Buffalo and beat Buffalo. So
it gives you a little bit of it. Not saying
the Steelers are better than Buffalo, but at least gives
you an indication that they might be able to play
with the Bills, if not beat them by weeks. Falcons, Bears, Packers,
Steelers all on buys this past week and then tonight quickly, Jacob,
(29:21):
the Monday night football game should be a good one.
Chiefs two and two at Jacksonville Jaguars three and one.
The Jaguars can make a huge statement tonight if they
can get to four and one and beat the defending
AFC champs.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Yeah, I mean huge statement win for the Jags.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
I think if the Chiefs end up winning this game,
we'll say just okay, the Chiefs are here and the
Jaguars we'll see what they end up doing. But at
the Jags, like you said, win this game, that is
a statement win for them. That is defeating the three
what is it, three time defending AFC champions. Yeah, you
have to and then what they be four and one
on the year to start. That's a huge, huge, huge
(29:58):
boost for them. Just considering two, you look at the
Colts who are also form one. That's going to be
a competitive race. If the Jaguars win tonight.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
That's a big one for sure for Jacksonville. We will
recap that one tomorrow here on the Standard, and we'll
see you tomorrow as we continue to wind down the
Steelers by week and get you ready as we move
along this week to Steelers and Brown's this upcoming Sunday.
This is the Steelers Standard with Ed Troup and Jacob
Wret on Steelers Nation Radio, part of the Steelers Audio Network.
