Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's happen everybody?
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Welcome to Wednesday, Nation of Texans All Access from Nonday
Texans Radio Studio.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
John Harris your.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Host, playing a sideline reporter alongside the voice of the Texans,
Mark vandermir Mark.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Good evening. How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Good evening, Johnny, I'm doing great. We got rookie Mini
Caamp coming up in a couple of days.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Can't wait for that.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
It's an interesting time of year, as you know, obas
on the way I'm watching NBA basketball at night. I
wish the Rockets were still alive. But I tune into
these games with about five ten minutes to go to
watch the pressure moments because I'm not going to sit
through an entire NBA game of two teams where I
have no dog in the fight. I love those moments, though,
and often it takes about an hour and a half
to watch the last ten minutes.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
It's just that way in that sport. It's icy. I
have not.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
First of all, Steph Curry getting injured in the first
game after beating the Rockets is so Warriors Rockets. But
they won the game anyway. Yeah, and they still won.
But you and I earlier today is around lunchtime. You
asked me if I had seen the end of the
Calves and Pacers game, and I had not, but thankfully
(01:08):
on my YouTube TV, I had put all NBA Playoff
games on the DVR, like you, yeah, it saves everything,
and then it saves them for thirty days, which is
freaking awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
So I was like, okay, I'll do what you just did.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I fast forwarded all the way till there was a
seven point lead for the Cavaliers. I was intrigued because
of Nick Sario on Sports Rao six ten. He had
he made a comment about how the Cavaliers lost by
not blocking out, which is true, and he used that
as kind of a jumping off point about what this,
what time of year, this is and that is fundamentals,
(01:45):
building blocks, the basics, and it's like blocking out some
basic in basketball, like it should be something that every
team does and every time team does well, you can
all blox out.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
And they didn't and it costs they lost.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Was incredible offensive rebounds, the one with the free throw
miss and dunk, and then the other where Halliburton gets
it kind of mid lane, there's traffic between him and
the basket, he still gets it.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Anyway.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
But there was a guy used to play with in
Boston pick up basketball, and he used to say it,
and I still say it in the same accent, you
got to get a body on him. You've got to
get a body on him. And I say that to
my sons all the time in basketball. Get a body
on him. You get a body on the guy and
back them out. That's fundamental stuff in basketball. And I
love your juxtaposition here with the NFL because right now,
(02:33):
you're right, it's fundamental time, especially as they install this offense.
Right now they're allowed to do some offense versus nobody,
stuff in defense versus nobody, and eventually they'll bring the
two sides together.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
We'll have some fun.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Was there was there anything that came out of sean
seys discussion with Nick that you thought was huh?
Speaker 1 (02:53):
I didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I felt like everything that he had talked about we
had talked about with him, or it was stuff that
we had heard. I got to a point where I'm like, man,
I had I had a lux member event with Nick,
yes where we talked about things. Then we had him
on the air with us, and then you had him
(03:17):
at the Insider dinner. Yeah, and then he had his
press conferences. So I'm in my mind trying to think, Okay,
was this something that he said at the lux event?
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Okay, I don't want to talk about that, but was
it that. So there's all these things kind of going
in my mind.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
But I found it interesting that he mentioned Ladarius Henderson
by name, and I know there are a lot of
Texas fans out there going, who's that who? He's set
round pick in twenty four and he had been injured
and so he basically spent the year rehabbing. But at
the same time, because he was rehabbing that injury, he
(03:53):
was also building his body back up. And Nick Nick
went there without even being prompted by the.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Guys saying, Hey, who's Ladarius Henderson.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
It wasn't that he brought that up unprovoked, And somebody
on Twitter I can't remember who was, said, hey, remember
last year when he talked about Henry toatoa unprovoked Yeah,
and look what Henry became. And everybody's like, oh, Ladarius Henderson,
we've seen Henry. Yeah, yeah, we had seen Henry and
Henry and Henry hatt played. I think that's that's one
of the other differences Henry Hatt played. But we talked
(04:26):
to Henry about that and he said, man, building up
my body, getting my body.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Right was a big thing.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
And I think for Ladarius he did that kind of
spending a red shirt year getting himself healthy. And I
know it had to be hard. That had to be
real hard. You drafted by a team and immediately upon
being there, you're like, hey, you know I'm not gonna
play because you know, I've got this injury I'm dealing
with and I got a rehab. But hopefully that's gonna
end up making him better for the long run. And
I said this, I said this, and I believe this.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
There's going to be a surprise in this offensive line,
whatever this five is, there's gonna be one that we go, wait,
what a wild card? Or did we Yeah, a wild
card we didn't see common and maybe and it develops
throughout camp kind of ramps up where you're like, hey,
such and such, they looked all right, Hey, he's getting
(05:14):
wrapped with the twos man. He's actually in there with
the ones on this series, and before you know it,
hopefully you got a Mike Brisel situation.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, where an undrafted guy rises up out of nowhere.
So of all the possibilities of the entire roster right now,
left tackle in no particular order. Okay, but Cam Robinson,
let's go Ursery. Yeah, okay, they just drafted him. We'll
say Blake Fisher because he did spend time at left
tackle in training camp. The lot of time at left Okay, Yeah,
(05:47):
there's that. Titus is still a possibility. I mean, you
can't rule it out. You can't rule it out. And
Nick was very noncommitted about Titus this morning.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
You want the don't forget about me number five one.
You're about to get to Ladarius Henderson.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
No, I think Ladarius plays inside Killian, the Austin Deculus.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Austin Deculus is Killian still on the roster, right, No,
he's not always gone.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
No, he I can't remember where he went.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
I remember, and I know this because I did all
my I did all my draft needs.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Maybe he'll be back.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
And I remember thinking, oh, you ain't think he is Falcons.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Yeah he's with the Falcons. Yeah, all right, so never
mind about him.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
But Boston Deculus started a game for the Texans in
twenty twenty three, a game in which they gave up
no sacks, no sacks against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
We got six guys.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yeah, six guys possibly possibly now the likeliest Robinson and
again no particular order, Ursery, right, maybe Henderson, I think
deculous before Deculus is not going to start a left tackle,
but no, he's in the mix. But am I going
to count him out to make the team. Yeah, yeah,
(06:59):
and maybe be a swing guy or whatever the case is.
Blake over Titus as a possibility more.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Likely to happen.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
If it was either of those two guys, Titus a
left tackle, Blake at left tackle, what they would do,
I don't know, it's a great question.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
I think they would probably leave because I think Titus
is is left guard.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I think that's what they so they don't want to
do either one of those.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
They'd rather have either Ursery win the job, Robinson be
great as great as he could possibly be, or a
guy like Henderson rise up from nowhere because he started
on Michigan's national championship team a couple of years ago
playing tackle and played that position, so maybe he could
do it.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Maybe maybe maybe.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
And I think Ladarius is a guard. But that's okay.
That's the whole thing about about red shirting. In a sense,
and rehabbing is that you get a chance to remake
your body, yeah, and kind of build your body into
a guard body if you need to. So it's interesting
that Nick brought him up this morning. I mean, I
(08:07):
can't even remember how Sean or or Seth phrased the question,
but essentially it was kind of like, you know who's
standing out to you, and he brought that up sort
of unprompted.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
He likes guys who put in the work in the
off season. That's exactly right.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
He said that about Garawalla once upon a time, and
Garrett ultimately did not pan out, but he cited the.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Hard work he was doing.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Yes, So the hard work that Ladarius and Nick would
admittedly say this that, Hey, the hard work doesn't necessarily
automatically mean that you're going to turn into something, but
you're not gonna do it without the hard work, especially
if you're one.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Of those guys.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
You've got to put in all that offseason effort. And
apparently Henderson has. We'll get a good close look at
him in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
That's right, that's right. We got rookie Minnie camp at
the end of the week. So it's gonna be fun
to kind of lay eyes on the rookies, et cetera.
You know, one of the moves that I can't remember
if they mentioned this with Nick today. And look, I
don't know what it's gonna end up being, but the
Texans claimed Jake Andrews on Waivers center center. And I
(09:04):
met Jake at Senior Bowl in twenty twenty three, and
he was there talking to our guy Lancer line and
Lancell's the offensive line pretty well, and they were talking
and I walked over and they're kind of talking about something,
and I heard the mention of wrestling, and I looked
over at Jake and I was like, oh, yeah, you're
a wrestler, weren't you, And he goes, yeah, you know.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
I was like, you know, wrestlers just have kind of
this way. Look they had that.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
There's a look that you could see just the way
they play. And and so Jake ended up being a Patriot,
got hurt, gets released, he gets put on waivers, and
the Texans ended up claiming him. And look, Cole's got
Cole Popovich Off's the line coach I saw today. He's
got he's got experience with Jake having been at Troy
for a year, so you bring Jake Andrews into the fold,
(09:49):
and he left that competition. And I think that's the
one thing that we've talked about the offensive line, and
I think we focused on tackling guards so much that
it's kind of a part of me that like, hey,
we got to figure out center. And maybe it's as
simple as hey, Jared Patterson's the center in his team.
He's the most reliable guy, he's the most trustworthy guy.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
He's a guy that gets the job done.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
And it was funny because one of the things that
Nicko Sario said about about tay Ersiery was and it's
funny because I've gotten to where I say this too,
like he gets guys blocked. And he said that about
tay Erstary, and I'm like, you know what, Jared Patterson
gets guys blocked. Jared Patterson's responsibility in the passing game
doesn't get to the quarterback. Yeah, that guy just doesn't
(10:30):
get there. Jareded does a good job. So hopefully Jarrett,
you know, is ready to take that step. Maybe it's juice.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
It's gonna be one hell of a competition though, But
going back to the Henderson.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Thing, just.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Being reminded of Ladarius Henderson because we didn't see him
last year. Now, you and I did because we were
in a building and so we would see him. But
people didn't get to see him at practice. You know,
he's obviously in a building, he's rehab he's working out.
But I've saw him. I saw him walking on the
hallway the other day and I saw him from a
and I just remember thinking, man, who's that? Holy cow? Yeah,
(11:03):
you see a guy built like that. You're like, who
is that? And then I've got a little bit closer
to realized, oh, that's the Darius. So it was kind
of good to hear Nick talk about that, the fact
that Henderson has been putting in their work.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
But you're right, you're right, Nick Demko. They like those
guys put in that work, Yeah, they do, and they
want to give them some credit.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
And here's another name, Trent Brown, not a left tackle
so much, but right to tackle.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Yeah, right, Johnny. They got a lot of guys.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yeah, you know, maybe it's hey, the Browns have five quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
It's not that bad.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Okay, no, no, they just have a lot of possibilities
on this soul line.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Let it all work itself out.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Injury is gonna help make this the decision as well,
or these tough decisions. But let's we're just beginning this
offseason thing, and my big not fear, but when the
media finally gets out there for OTAs, you're gonna hear
about guys who might not be there because they're hurt
or whatever. Hey, they're already doing stuff out there. Guys
are gonna start getting hurt, you know, minor stuff. Fully,
(12:00):
that's it, and they'll have to work their way back.
And it's just a fact of life in the NFL.
And we're going to overreact to everything, but that's just
part of.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
What we do here, especially at this time of year.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, of course there's massive overreaction because look, we're talking
about the sport every day. They're out there every day,
and what really matters is who's available for Sunday game days,
not preseason game days, Sunday, actual regular season game days.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
That's what matters the most. And we got a long
way to go till we get Okay, the.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
I think it's offensive line. I'm pretty sure it's offensive line.
But the top three position battles right now, in your
mind going into training camp. Top three position battles going
into into training camp thankful line one for sure, like
(12:51):
no question because.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
You literally have three starting spots from last year's opening
day up for grabs.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Yes, right true.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
And you could say, I mean, does Juice automatically have
a spot? I would say it looks pretty good. He's
going to start somewhere, whether it be set or guard.
But he might not because you brought in Lake and Tomlinson,
you brought in Ingram, You have other guys who could
possibly fit the bill.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Yep, but Titus is going to start. You mentioned Patterson.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
When you look at Patterson, he's played in some big
games now as a center. Yes, this is definitely and
I don't know if that's the deciding factor. I'm sure
it's not the deciding factor, but it's a factor. But
I think O line, there's no question because you're literally
replacing three starters from opening day last year. But I
think wide receiver has a lot of competition going on
(13:40):
because I only have two guys who I know are
definites to play a lot, and that would be Nico
and Kirk. Yes, the rest of it is, Hey, I'm
open to everything here, and I'm sure they are too.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
You know, you have the draft choices.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
You brought in Braxton Burrios, you brought in Justin Watson.
You know, obviously you're going to take a law look
at everybody you have on the roster here to battle
it out there reserve running pack, Woody Marks Yep, battling
with Dare and Door Damien for reps behind Joe Mixon,
who's a lock obviously full back. I don't think is
a huge position battle, but it's definitely one we're gonna
(14:16):
be watching. Because British Brooks, you know that Nick likes
Nick Keley likes British Brooks.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
Probably everything you can bring to the table.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
And Yakub Johnson, you know, you and I saw him
in the hallway the other day.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
You were talking with him. You have some familiarity from
North Florida with Yeah, yeah, he went to Rebolt High School. Yeah, so,
uh a large He's a large individual. He's a very
large in the video.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Let me give you the one that I think is
off the rate, well not so much off the radar screen,
but I think it's gonna be hell of a competition.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Sometimes I think when you have.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
A lot of good players, really good players at one position,
like I think we forget about a position battle.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Yeah, I know where you're going. I think linebacker could
be a son of a you know what.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
I thought something else, but okay, I'll go there. Because
Azi's Henry Christian EJ.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Speed.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
You've got four legit NFL starters for two spots.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
It's true because if Christian and EJ Are totally healthy,
I mean you could say, all right, I feel pretty
good with those guys as my starters because I got
a z's in Henry Totoe with the team's leading tackler
last year out a good defense and as he's alse Shire,
who's the man, So that's great. Is it of competition
to see who starts who plays a lot? I don't
(15:27):
know how you would define it.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah, And maybe competition is the wrong word, but in
a sense, I think that's what it.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Might be because he J.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Speed's going to think he he's gonna think he should
start right, And there's a part of me in things. Yeah,
like he's good enough to be a starter, but you
got four guys capable of being a starter throwing really
two spots.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
And this is not a rotational position like defensive tackle,
where that's where I thought you were going, because they've
added our friend is in New York state of mind
back from the Borough of Queens. Fulorunzo Fatakasi reportedly this
morning the reports came out.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yeah, I rolled in the sign.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
I rolled in the studio and first thing I saw
was Jonathan Alexander's tweet Texas has signed fully Fotacasi and
just banged the table kind of like with what he Mark.
Fully's one of my favorite guys. But I've said it before.
He's athletic size, he's agile. You know he can move now.
Got banged up a little bit last year, so hopefully
you know, he got got fixed what needed to be fixed.
(16:29):
But now you're looking at twenty twenty four's defensive line
with Rankins yeah, or you can look at it twenty
twenty threes defensive line without Maleik but with Settle Mario.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
And I'm downright and fully yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
And you found Tommy Togii like a lot of change
in your pocket, Like wait a minute, these quarters add up.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
I got a few bucks in here. Actually.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
With Tommy TOGII in that mix, that's a very strong
position group.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
I'm telling you, when you see Junior Tafuna from out
of Utah.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
You're gonna think you're watching Togii.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Okay, they're a little different, but they're kind of the
same size, kind of same body type.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
You're gonna think you're watching Tommy Togii.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
And he's undrafted free agent junior Tafunah with the Texans.
Who's gonna be very fun him and County County Hamilton's
a hell of an athlete, I mean, a big time athlete.
It's gonna be it's gonna be fun to see what
these guys do.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
And Autrey can still bump inside as we know, yep,
because on the end you're still really strong on the edges. Man. Yeah,
you know with Will and d'anil and I got Darryl
Taylor and Barnett and Autrey and Horton.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
You you go six deep at that spot. This is it.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
You imagine loadad defense. My gosh, if these rookie dB
well rookie DB's. Yeah, you look at Jalen Smith and
Nickel and read the six round draft choice from Penn
State or rookie DB's.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
If they can fit in. They don't have to be studs, no,
just fit in. Just contribute.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Give them something a little different than what they've already got,
which might be hard because it looks like this defense
has got a lot, But there's got to be something
that they don't have that. You know, a great blitz,
you know, somebody being a great blitzer. Maybe interior just
cover guy one on one. Maybe a physical hitter or
physical presence like just one one.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
Just bring one thing to the party.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
You don't have to be like this all world defensive back.
Just bring one thing to the party. That's all I
gotta do.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
On paper.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
On paper, guy says, this defense is loaded and it's
a super Bowl defense. Now when I say that, I'm
not saying it's the two thousand Ravens, it's not the
eighty five Bears. But you could win a Super Bowl
with this defense if you have the complimentary offense.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
You need to have that all clicking well. Like Eagles
last year.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
This defense can make the stops you needed to make
and make negative plays and take the ball away for
championship caliber performance, there's no doubt. Now the offense has
to go to work and match it. You got to
run the ball better. Let's throw the but you have
to do everything better. And we'll see if they can
do it. And if they can get a good portion
of the way there, you know, in average or plus
(19:24):
average in certain categories like pass protection, would automatically take
you to a nice place because of the way the
defense can play possibly right, And you know, we talk
about playing well in big games in the postseason, and
you know, we're all watching the postseason in the NBA
right now.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
What does it take.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
It takes. Yeah, it sounds silly, it sounds simplistic. It
takes making those big plays at the critical moments, right,
And if your defense can do that in the postseason
at the critical moments, well now we've got something, you know,
and hopefully your offense can do that.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
But we'll all watch together.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
We're not there yet here, we are early May, still
relatively and we're going to watch the process.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Yes, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
I did find it interesting that our lads, who has
all the depth chart information for NFL teams and for
college too, they have Woody Mark says, the number two
running back behind Joe Mixon.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
I thought that was interesting.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Well, I guess it's an automatic to them. You know,
I think, are we too close to the flame when
we talk about Damian Pierce and we think about the
twenty twenty two season, but it's more than twenty twenty two.
It's how well he ran against the Titans. It's the
occasional kickoff return that makes you go wow, you know
it's still there in there. Yes, he didn't change, he
(20:39):
didn't go through some injury. It's not like Steve Slayton, where,
oh my gosh, once he had that amazing rookie year,
he got really banged up. Now, Damien's had some injuries,
but it's not Slayton. I believe at the back injury
or something like that. It was a physicality changing kind
of injury.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
With Damien. He's still Damien.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
And I'm really curious about is does this Nick Cayley
offense bring out the best and Damian Pierce?
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Yeah, twenty ten. I think it's a great question.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
I just found it interesting as I was looking at
that depth chart, making sure I don't forget somebody on
the roster.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
I'm not ready to get with you that job. No,
I'm not either.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
I think he's going to contend for both spots dar
spot and Damien's number two running back spot. He will
contend and compete for those spots. Does he get them.
I can't say that right now. He's a rookie.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
I gotta see it. Yeah, you're right, there's no question
about that. Okay.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
We talked about fully Foughtacasi becoming a Houston Texan. Yet again,
that is great news. We loved seeing that news, fully
being a defensive lineman. We figured, you know what, let's
talk with a legend Houston Texan, former defensive line first
round pick trap Jay Travis Johnson. He's going to join
(21:52):
us next right here on Texans All Access.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
What's happened? Everybody?
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Welcome back to this edition of Texans All Access from
HUNDA Texans Radio Studio. I'm your oachs John Harris, football analyst,
sideline reporter for your Houston Texans, and we always have
a blast when we have our next guest with us
in studio, and that would be my man Trap j
Aka Travis Johnson. Two thousand and five first round pick
(22:20):
for your Texans, and that's really where we started with
this conversation.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
We got a lot of this conversation, but right.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Here we talked about being that first round pick in
two thousand and five, and one of the things I
actually noted when he was drafted in two thousand and
five was actually my first time on air with Mark
Vandermer and it was the Draft show and it was
Mark and I can't remember who else, but I know
my buddy Lance Erla was on as why Lance had
me on, and so I remember Mark asking me what
(22:49):
I think? What did I think about Travis Johnson's draft pick.
I said, look, Travis Johnson football player I really like,
and I think he's a really good, productive football player.
I said, I don't like to fit in this particular defense.
He's a four to three penetrating defensive tackle like he
would fit into Miko's defense perfectly. But Texans drafted him
and they were running a three four at the time.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
It was not the right fit in all.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Honesty, and Travis discussed here that it was pretty frustrating
to not have that fit be right, and he discussed
one of the greatest of all time and how the
fit worked for him. Travis never made excuses, but he
also knew the fit wasn't perfect and had the fit
Ben better, who knows the fit was perfect for one.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Aaron Donald, as he doted right here, when you.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
Try to explain it to non football people, I tried
to I tell him like that said, man when you
look back. Now, let's not get a twist. Aaron Donald
was still Aaron Donald, one of the greatest ever. Lace
up some cleats. But you put him in an old
school where Cleveland at the time had big ted and
those guys. You say, you know what, Aaron who wanted
you to play nose guard?
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (23:59):
You just hold up, don't move, just stay right there,
sit on the toilet. Does Aaron Donald become who Aaron
Donald is? No, because he's five to eleven, two hundred
and sixty five pounds.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Like you can't like it just doesn't work. You see
what I'm saying. And there's so many examples of scheme
and fit to say. You know what, you gotta do
the work to say this guy fits what we're doing.
And I think you see it more here why we
had so many success with lately with draft picks.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
Wait, I gotta do something right now.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
Is sit on the toilet a noseguard expression?
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Kind of?
Speaker 4 (24:34):
I mean it is because if you look at him,
and you look at him look like somebody's lost bull dog,
and you're sitting on the toill like you're not your
weights out leaning forward, you're leaning back, your hands buried
on the ground, You're reading and reacting to the movement
of the center.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
I love that. I've never heard that before. Somehow I'd
never heard that, but now I got.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
It, which makes me think of this. We were talking
about this yesterday. Trap.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
We're talking about the most physic impressive person. Now, I
the one I didn't say was the first one I
ever saw was your cousin was Max Starks.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
I remember coaching against him that night. I was like,
I was looking up and I'm like, oh my god.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Who's the most physically impressive person you ever came across
or played against them?
Speaker 4 (25:19):
There's two people and played with one seen the other one.
And I remember at the Pro Bowl in two thousand
and nine where Mario and pep are sitting next to
each other.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
Oh yeah, Julius Peppers and oh God, and.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
I'm literally like, if God made a better looking specimen,
he kept it for himself, like he saitting he's an angel,
because like those two dudes, I mean, both of them
are six foot seven, built differently, but both of them
are two hundred ninety pounds, super explosive. I think you know,
of course, the fans here would love for Mario to
become Julius Peppers, you know, and.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
I think he had and he had opportunity.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
I think Mario just he loved he loved the the
life more than he might have loved the game, you
know what I'm saying, And because you know it was
it was times I'm like, dude, you're unblockable. Like when
you decide to put your hand in theret and go forward,
there's nobody on this earth that can block you. And
we saw that at the Pro Bowl in twenty ten
(26:21):
nine whatever, I guess it's been twenty ten, so I
guess when I saw them was eight pro bo where
he gets like four sacks in like five plays and
everybody's like, who it gets the best tackles in the game.
You know what I'm saying, Where it's like, hold on now,
Mario going full speed, we need to tighten.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Up, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
And you know, and if he stays here and if
running that fourth three at the time, he probably a
hunter sack guy. I want to say, Mario might have
what ninety ninety sacks maybe you know, and I just
you know those two probably I mean Max, of course,
because Max six' nine built like a, bear you know
WHAT i, Mean like it's it's Like Greg jones of
(26:58):
course played with another. One oh, yeah you Know greg
took his shirt off at the combine and everybody and.
Nod you, know he's the first Person i've ever seen
with eight, abs you know WHAT i, mean four. Hamstrings
like he looks exactly like that picture that they have
in doctor's office of what your muscles are supposed to,
be like where they're looking At so.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Were you were you on the field that night you
get that kid From North? Carolina, yes it was that Was.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
Lord that Was greg's first game back after after turns
a Cl so you, know we're all in the same.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
CLASS i remember when YOU'RE i thought maybe that might
have been. No.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
No So greg came out in the four. Draft that's
the beginning of. Three that's the opening game of. Three
Is greg's first carry coming off of a cl, surgery
and it Is Dexter read is the number one safety
coming out at the. Time he's a number of ranked
safety getting ready for the draft coming.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Up well he's on the third round because of.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
That BECAUSE i mean he literally like if IF i
think it Was Chris davis or or Or Krafonso thorpe
that was five yards behind. Him if he's not, there
he goes another three yards four yards and when he
did him like, That but that was some of the worst.
One you remember his his, collisions him And Sean taylor
used to. Have they used to be they used to be,
(28:11):
alright like somebody gonna like somebody gonna die out here
in a, minute you. Know but it Was greg was
one of the freakst. Guys like when he tore the
A c they kicked him out of the weight room
because he was like two eighty five pounds three percent body.
Fat they're, like, dude you gotta stop. Lifting but he's
like he ate terrible he ate burgers every. Day and
(28:32):
it was like but he burned it all. Up he
just was a. SPECIMEN i mean it WAS i mean
he wanted them them regular dirt Road South carolina guys
from the gul Of geeche. Areas then you just, like,
man we're like the first descending the slaves, man like
they ain't they they, blood they blood ain't ain't watered
down at.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
All it was it was.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Nuts Travis johnson joining, Us, okay so we went over,
five And johnny talked About mario getting drafted and you,
know we were doing that shit about the physical specimens and.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
Stuff mario was on.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Track you could, say like you, said if things turned
out a little, Differently you're talking two, teams Two All
pro first team awards For Pro, bowls all those, sacks
Possible hall Of fame career if he could keep it
going on a consistent, basis which was. Tough But dimico
goes first in the second. Round and former players have
(29:27):
talked about. This teammates Of, demiko what were your first
impressions Of Demiko ryans on the, field rookie linebacker coming
in defensive player of the.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Year oh he was or rookie you, KNOW i mean he,
was but he was defensive. Player he was. Sec devens
played the year his senior.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
YEAR i, mean the only reason Why demigo win the
second round because he didn't run. Well and if anybody knows,
me go like you like you see him, running you'd
be like you see him running like the. Sprints migo
do everything he could not to run on like heavy
running days during the, offseason because it was like they
just wasn't. Him he was a ball. Player he, ran
like if you do it now with all these metrics
that they have, now they'll they'll measure how fast a
(30:03):
guy goes in at forty and then they'll, see you,
know because of the, catapult they'll know how fast they
run the. GAME i promise You miko probably ran him
four to four during the games compared to his four
seven four, Eight and he ran whatever he was running coming.
Out but my first impression, was you, KNOW i remember
his first, practice he like was tripping over words AND
(30:25):
i was kind of making fun of, it and it was
a JOKE i kind of made fun of for a.
While and then he was, like, hey, basically shut the f,
up it's my, huddle you know What i'm.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Saying AND i was, LIKE i like. THIS i like this,
guy you know WHAT i.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Mean i'm, like there's nobody at the time was gonna
say anything to, me you know WHAT i? Mean and,
uh you, know we Signed Sam coward that off. SEASON
i remember they Gave Sam Conder Mellion bucks sign and
he's supposed to be the. Starter And sam used to
Be sam in Practice Like i'm practice high. Practice i've
been in this game for however Long i've led the
(30:59):
league in, Tackles i'm to be, here and but The
miko was hitting people to my playing to the echo
to whistle every single day in, practice in.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Games and so where they Cut Sam.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
Caroday that, offseason like before the season even started to say,
yeah you keep the mean, dollars see you. Later AND
i think that for us was, like, oh like it's his,
time you know WHAT i.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Mean and then he was on the.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Field he always took, control always was out there busting his.
Ass and then WHEN i think that truly was his
first year that he should have went to The Pro bowl that,
YEAR i think he should have went TO Prob And
i'm pretty sure the ONLY i think he finished second
or third in league in tackles as well that. Year
and this is a rookie on the team with nothing
but young, guys and he was our leader from day,
(31:44):
one you know WHAT i. Mean so just the way
he went about his, business and we all had we
were a young, team had a great, time didn't win
a lot of, games but we worked. Hard AND i
mean some of the fans might not have known, this
some of the media might not have, cared but we
really work and like everybody's like man y'all are tanking this,
season like you know how much work we put in
(32:05):
and how and how much we out here. Grinding and
this is When cool came. In so this wasn't even
like later On cool with more. Relaxed this WAS i
came in With Richard, smith who's gonna say THE f
word every other, word you.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Know WHAT i.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
MEAN i come in here And I'm i'm establishing dominance
And i'm getting rid of all of the guys who
they said were leaders Because i'm changing up the. Guard
and they did, it and he was our ultimate leader
from day, one AND i mean it.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Was it showed the way he, played it showed the
way he.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
Led it showed in you know when when when we
had to JUMP shocki when him And shot got into
the training, Camp like it's JUST whoa.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
And shaki got into a training? Camp why AM i
not heard this? Story oh, yeah they got into it
In New. Orleans that's here.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Practice joint practice. Here shock he was The. Saints with The,
saints we're getting like it's been has been getting. Chippy
miko hits him in the mouth a couple of, times
and all of a sudden he grabs. ME i Mean i'm,
hurt and all of a, SUDDEN i come, out, no
itere not my Cat, Nick and all of a sudden
cool stops the. Film he, said, listen you hadn't played
(33:10):
in four, weeks you had. This why are you out
here in this? Fight hey, man, listen one. Fight we
all gonna. FIGHT i don't know about. You i'm gonna
drag his leg on the way, there you know WHAT i.
Mean but it, was you, know we do anything for.
Him we go to war for, him and that he's
that type of guy that that you want to go
to war, for you know WHAT i. Mean and that's
WHY i love seeing. Him and every DAY i see.
(33:30):
HIM i love seeing, him tell HIM i love. HIM
i love seeing his, KIDS i love SEEING i love Seeing.
JAMIE i just love his whole fan and half. Forever
because we were such LIKE i don't think people understand
how tight of a group we. ARE i think some
people look at like me And andre's, like, man why
they so? Tight we were always, together like you, KNOW
i would On, thursday we had d line. Night On,
(33:50):
friday the dbs might have went out On friday to
the receivers go, out And i'm pulling up on all
of them because we were like what, Else we didn't
have Any we weren't no, kids no. Nothing so we
were football nine months out the, year but we were
with each other all the. Time it was like college
all over again with how young this organization was.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
At the, Time, travis no. Mystery the team went through
some really tough. Times when you look at two thousand
and two thousand and, one two thousand and, two what
did it mean to you and the other former, players
former teammates Of, demiko but Just texans, legends, ambassadors guys
who had played in this city and live here and
(34:32):
seen the tough times those very tough. Years and Then
tomiko gets hired to be the head. Coach what does that?
Speaker 4 (34:37):
MEAN i mean it's a full circle, moment and it
was like we were All it's like you almost hired
all of us because now it was you, know some
guys wanted to access To, miko but it was, like, no,
man this is this is epic because you watched his
rise into coaching and you watch how he went about
it the same way he went about being the player he.
(34:59):
Became you watched, him you, know come in where maybe
nobody gave him as much fanfare as he probably. Deserved
and he learned under, guys he learned under and he,
became you, know more and more every day you watched
him get more. Responsibility you Watched kyle basically put.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
Together you.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
KNOW i used to know when like When coopanham got,
here we called ourselves The Denver broncos of The south
because the whole organization was like The broncos bought in.
Here and then then you felt Like kyle took The
Houston texans out, west you know What i'm, saying because
everybody in the organization were pivotal people here for the
changing of the guard to become a, player become a
(35:40):
not even a playoff, team become just a winning organization
to where we didn't have a losing, Record and you
watched them go do. That and then all of a,
sudden when the coaching talk comes, up and you, know
some people out there that was like he don't want the,
Job yeah he, does you, know like why wouldn't he
want this?
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Job you know WHAT i?
Speaker 4 (35:57):
Mean like this is this is the perfect place for.
Him he's, home this is, home his wife's from, here his,
family like like he's. Family he KNOWS i can come
here And i'll be EVERYTHING i want to. Be i'll
get the opportunity to coach it the WAY i want
to coach. It and because y'all been around the game
long enough to realize, that, like you are a direct
(36:18):
reflection of leadership when it comes to team, sports like
and it becomes probably military the same. Way you, know
your direct reflection of who your leader is and the
way he played the game is the way this team has.
Embodied and we knew it was gonna. Happen it just
was a matter like everybody was, like, oh to be
a couple of, years AND i told him, Again, nah
it's not gonna be a couple of. Years you see
(36:38):
it right. Away and they sitting there looking, like, nah
there's no. Way we just had, This, yes said, man
don't look at any of. That the way he comes
to work every day and the type of pro that he,
is he'll bring that same intensity and that same that
SAME i need y'all to be the best. MENTALITY i
need y'all to come to work and work a certain
(36:59):
type of way that's gonna trickle. Down and guess, what
if you don't want to do what you can leave
you know What i'm, saying if you don't want to do,
it we can find somebody else to do. It but
we're gonna demand this just the same way when he
demanded me to be my a. Gap i'm gonna be
there because he knows he can count on. Me he
knows he can count on the rest of the guys around,
him BECAUSE i don't want to let him. Down because
(37:19):
we turn on the, film you ain't gonna talk bad about,
me you know What i'm. Saying maybe the media might
because they don't know what they looking. At but when
it comes to when you turn it, on you be like,
playing you know What i'm, Saying or all his teammates he's.
Playing and that's the THING i think he gets out
of everybody else is you know they're gonna be a
director reflection of what he truly.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
Is and that's a damn fine leader.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
From having played on the defensive side back when you.
DID i gotta ask you about a guy that we
know pretty. Well hear him every day In Sports trader.
Sixteen what was like what he tell us About seth
back in the, Day seth Pain.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
Well seth was A i, Mean seth was a guy
who was he was always technically, say he always knew the.
Game he always was a guy who you, know wanted
to be the, best wanted to be better than you
know truly.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Is but he.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
WAS i, mean he's the guy who probably got the
most out of who he.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
WAS i, Mean seth wasn't no.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
Blazer seth wasn't no Super he wasn't, fast he wasn't you,
know he was, physical he held up at the point of,
attack you. Know but at the same, time you got
to think About seth got ten plus years in this
league in a time where those guards were a premium. Position,
yep you know when he got he wasn't, now he
Wasn't Casey, hampton he wasn't. Ted but he gave everything
(38:35):
he had to become the player he. Became and to
anybody to get the type of time he got in
this league and do it the way he did, it
you gotta respect everything that he brought to this organization
because and brought to every organization he was. At because
when you think about, it like in the grand scheme of,
it how much time is a guy from From cornell
Or brown or whatever Whatever ivy he went, To, yeah
(38:59):
how many how much time is a guy truly gonna
get in this. LEAGUE i mean they didn't have a
starting quarterback from From ivy until Until.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
Fitzpatrick you know What i'm.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Saying like they've been hating ON ivy babies for a long,
time trap long, time long.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Time but it's it's the same, thing like because they
don't they don't, know they don't do the. Research it's
kind of like the two draft picks we got out
of our state this. Year everybody looks, like how do
we get To we must got an inside.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Track, no we did the. Homework you know What i'm.
Saying you did the homework.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
To find guys that a fit and find guys that
maybe you don't, want BUT i promise you the'll be
stars in this league because they took the time to
do the research the same Way coaughlin did For seth
the same way people whoever did For fitz For fitzmagic
when he got. In when he got in the, league
you did the you did the, time you, did did the,
research and you found a guy who's gonna fit and.
FOREVER i mean he was a staple between him And
(39:48):
Gary walker And jacksonville those years as young. PUPPS i
mean they were like a married. Couple they hate each
other one, minute they love each other next. Minute and
but it was like the coolest thing to watch them
interact every single day and learn how to Be Jess
ginnia taught me how to be a. Pro he's got
to play the nineteen, years but my teaching becoming the
Pro Between, Seth gary gets a bad rap because of
(40:10):
his attitude necessarily and just how mean and certainly he always.
Was between those, two those are the guys who, like
this is what it's gonna, be this is what it's gonna,
take this is how you gotta be IN i, mean
you can't say enough about What seth has gotten out
his career and what he's done in his.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
Time All, right one more for you now that the
draft is over. WITH i know you get this question
all the, time but your general assessment on where we
are at right now with The Houston texans head to
get to twenty twenty. FIVE i know we get a
long way to go With OTA's training, camp all of.
It but what are you thinking here in general about
the prospects this, Year, travis what he's seeing in this
team before we really get into.
Speaker 4 (40:47):
It, WELL i MEAN i see JUST i see, ATTITUDE
i see you, KNOW i see all the intangibles that
you want in. Guys but THEN i see, value you,
KNOW i think when when you look at this, draft you,
know you're so, Happy like we talked about this, earlier
about not reaching for players and not, saying you know,
what this guy is the next best thing on the. Table, okay,
Cool but what do we do with? Him what is
(41:08):
he gonna do for? Us now we trade. BACK i
know a lot of people are probably why don't we
keep trading? Picks why we keep trading? Picks, well we're
getting value out of these. Guys and now when we
when we you, know three years from, now when one
of our receivers that we got in the fourth, round
maybe if we don't resign, them we're gonna get another
draft pick for, him a compensatory pick for, him and
he's gonna give us pro bowllesque numbers for three. Years
(41:32):
because right, now when we think about, it we just
secured up our receiver. ROOM i don't know the ins
and outs WITH i, mean, tanks, Injuries there's no WAY
i don't think he'll be read unless he on The
Adrian peterson. PLAYING i don't know if he'd be ready
to start the. Season you know What i'm, Saying but
what do we? Do we got more receivers in that
room to solidify with young.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
Bodies.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
Uh when you talk about the kid FROM, usc he
brings the same attitude and that we. Want you, know
you look at a team Like. Fit we're doing the
same things on a different level of what they're. Doing
When philly looking Like i'm just gonna Drive alabama And
georgia players just make them all and make them all,
one you know What i'm. Saying but we are finding
(42:11):
those gems AND i think we continue to find those.
Gyms you, KNOW i Told, Nick i'm, like, dude you
got the biggest balls in the, World like you're Like
Pedro serrano when he hit that damn home, run like
jogging around holding them dang suckers Like halliburton did. That
you hit that big shot the other night because you deserve,
it like you You demigo and. Whoever the rest of
the pro personnel guys are are getting phenomenal uh, value
(42:36):
and not just, that but guys who are gonna fit the.
System And i'm guessing when they came on to visit,
you you check their attitudes and.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
You check the find.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
Out you're gonna play, sideline the, sideline no seat, Belt
you're gonna play how you're gonna play this, game and
if you play this game the right, way we're gonna
we're gonna make sure you become a part of our.
Speaker 1 (42:52):
Family Nice, travis always a. Pleasure, thanks it was always.
Great appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
Guys there's so Many time's legends that walk in our
studio that we talked to over the. YEARS i, MEAN
i can't EVEN i can't even name them all between J,
Jo Andre, Johnson, Cush Matt shab has been in our.
STUDIOS i, mean we've had so many of them over the.
Years Trap jay is still one of my favorites because
(43:18):
he is unabashedly honest and forthright and funny as.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Hell he is so good to talk. To well more
from Trap jay.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
Later this, week early next, week we had a, long
long discussion with. Him that was just part of it right. There,
okay there's big news in THE nfl that actually broke this.
MORNING i wake. Up, look oh, man The Pittsburgh steelers
have made a. Deal we'll discuss that and then some
next right, Here Aret Texans access let's Dudd welcome back
(43:49):
To wednesday At Isha Texans All. Access Appreciate Jalen reed
for having that emotion and that excitement when he was
drafted by The. Texans uh not Last, Saturday saturday. Before,
boy we've already already about ten days. Removed, man incredible.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
Stuff all.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Right i'm your, Host John Harris football and on THE
southelnd reporter for Your Houston. Texans let us go around THE.
Nfl and it started early this morning with a. NOTICE
i THINK i got it from The ATHLETIC i think
that was what popped up on my phone AND i
looked over AND i.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
Thought oh, boy here we. Go So.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
George, pickens, talented big time, talent Leaving pittsburgh and going
to The Dallas. Cowboys, now my Man Steve smith said
on his Podcast underdog eighty nine with my Man James,
palmer they should have seen this coming ONCE Dk metcalf
(44:51):
was a member of The steelers after that trade With,
Seattle picketts should have seen this.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
Coming apparently, ALLEGEDLY i don't know if this is.
Speaker 2 (44:59):
True take a for what it's, worth But Aaron rodgers
has been having throwing sessions WITH Dk Metcalf George pickens not.
Involved now we'll see If Aaron rodgers does in fact
want to play for The. Steelers BUT i got a
feeling this kind of paves the way for The steelers
a little bit more Of Aaron rodgers that he deals
WITH Dk, Metcalf he's Got Calvin austin, third is to
Have Roman wilson on the, roster so they can still
(45:21):
do some decent. Things so we'll see what happens. There
if it's Not Aaron, rodgers do they make a play
For Kirk cousins or do they Let Will howard be
a rookie quarterback for The? STEELERS h, BOY i don't
enemy The, steelers but pretty interesting stuff. There So metcalf
and a sixth goes to The, cowboys and in, return
(45:48):
The steelers get a twenty twenty five twenty twenty six
sorry third round pick and a twenty twenty seven fifth round.
Pick so essentially what The steaeo's got was a pick
swap in twenty twenty seven and a third round pick
in twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Six not.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
Bad they don't have to deal With pickens. Anymore from all,
Indications pickens is just a complete nightmare to work. With
behind the scenes And Mike tomlin's just stump, dumb done with.
Speaker 1 (46:16):
It let's.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Go we GOT dk and that's that's. It now For,
dallas you add a mercurial, individual but a tremendous, player
and you put him next To Ceedee. Lamb, now how
Is George pickens going to be as the robin To
Ceedee lamb's batman mains to be. Seen BUT i think
(46:38):
it's a good deal for The, cowboys, honestly and they
gave him third next. YEAR i, mean it's not, horrible
and you get one of the more athletic and talented
receivers in the.
Speaker 1 (46:46):
League so we'll see how that pans.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
Out But dak gets another weapon In, dallas and they
absolutely needed. It The eagles And Dallas goddard speeding In
dallas agreed to rework their.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
Contract his. Contract good for. Them he's. Back that's.
Speaker 2 (47:01):
