Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello Texans, Welcome to the Tmico Ryan Show. And it's
a great one tonight with the Texans riding a wave
with four consecutive wins seven of their last nine, and
four weeks ago, we came into the studio not knowing
what was going to happen.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
They were three and five. CJ.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Stroud was injured. You had tough games coming up. What
was going to happen? You were digging yourself out from
owen three and constantly unable to really get on a
roll within a game of five hundred a couple of times,
unable to get there two games below five hundred four
weeks ago today.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
But what happened?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Four straight wins that come from behind her against the Jaguars,
the late win against the Tennessee Titans, the dismantling of
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in a close game
of course, and then going to Indianapolis and defeating the
Colts twenty to sixteen. Man, what a great win. That
was four straight in Indy, which is incredible. And Demiko Ryans,

(00:58):
after going zho to one to start out his career
against the Colts, has won the last four. So that's
impressive stuff. When you consider the history of this franchise
against the Horseshoe, an amazing win and a tall order
on Sunday night facing the Kansas City Chiefs and the
Big One, and we put it that way because you

(01:18):
are in contention for the playoffs. They're one of those
teams that wants to be in contention to They are
six and six, so you go in actually with a
better record heading into the matchup. And in the AFC South,
you're a game out of first, but two teams are
tied for that top spot eight and four with the
Colts and Jags playing this weekend, and that's one of
the things we're going to talk to Demiko Ryan's about.

(01:39):
So let's get right to it. Our conversation with the
head coach. We're presented by Amagy Bank, the official business
bank of the Houston Texans.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Coach.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Great to see it, congratulations on the victory, Thank you,
Great to see you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
All right here we are.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
It's Chiefs week, Big One, and we'll talk about that,
but let's talk about the Colts game first, going up
to Indianapolis, and you got to complish what you needed to.
You got the victory and made the big plays at
the moment of truth.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Now, that was the key to the game.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
I thought we did a great job on third down,
the critical down third down offense and defense. We made
plays we needed to make and defensively get into two
big fourth down stops. Those were the plays of the game.
Right they're in position to score, there they go for it.
We stopped them in their own territory. That was huge
plays in the game. And just how we also how

(02:27):
he finished the game offensively, being able to run the
clock out. Just thought, overall, we did what we needed
to do. I thought CJ's first game back, he stepped in,
did some really you know, good things with the football,
finding a lot of different receivers. He did a really
nice job of managing the game. Like I said yesterday,
I some throws he probably won't back, and that's also

(02:49):
the russ from being out for three weeks.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
That happens.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
But I felt like he also grew in a sense.
So he had some as I call him sack saber plays,
or the defender is on him and he just dirt
at the ball like he's he's growing, he's making good decisions,
and he's continuing to progress and get better. So I'm
excited for where he started and now looking forward to
his next week to see how how much of a
stuff he contained.

Speaker 6 (03:13):
Could you talk about CJ from the physical aspect and
the rust, how much from the mental aspect is the
rust having to shake off as well? Because one thing
you said your press conference stood out to me, and
you said that you spied their blitzes, so change protections
to get those stopped, and they stop blitzing because you
were starting to pick them up. How much of the

(03:34):
rush shaking off part is the mental part of Okay,
I got to go back to reading defenses on the
regular with them about to come sack me.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
How much of the is the mental part for CJ
getting over that?

Speaker 5 (03:45):
Yeah, the mental part is, Hugh. I also think our
coaches did a really great job Kaylee and his staff.
They did a great job of working on those things
in practice and our walkthroughs when we're slowing it down
and we're truly just teaching, like in our meeting, is
how we go through the protection meetings, and I think
we just we handled it really well this week and
the guys were locked in, they were attentive, and the

(04:08):
same things that we talked about in the meetings, they
came up on the field and it's like it's that
final exam, like you have to pass it, you gotta
be on it. And they did a great job of communicating.
O line did a great job in our backs did
a great job picking up the blitzzers as well.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Ye, speaking of the backs, coach the running game, it's
not like a high volume yard per carry average, but
you're stuck with it.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
You ran for over one hundred yards. You did what
needed to be done.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, it's funny.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
You know some of those runs where they got guys
running through, like they got linebackers running through, you got
possible TFLs.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
It's easy to say, oh, we.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
Got to scrap the run right and start just throwing
it more. But I like how Kayley continued to stay
with the run. We changed up some of the runs
we had some schematically, like we started to go outside
zone a little bit more, started to go more toss plays,
trying to get on the perimeter. So even though it
doesn't look great on some a couple plays like, you
still have to stay with it and keep the variety

(05:01):
there to keep the defense on the heels.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
And that's what we did.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
And we were able to turn out some really good
yard it's by getting the ball on a perimeter a
little bit more what he did a great job on
a perimeter run of cutting back, so we got Nico
a run for a first touchdown, first wrestling touchdown. So
it was just really cool things of how we mix
it up in the run game, getting chubbed in a
wildcat formation allow him to run. So I just like

(05:25):
the variety of things that we're doing.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Coach.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
I know if we were to sit here and say, hey,
what do you like about your team, and you'd say toughness, physicality, resilient,
those are all traits. I think you'd want to see
your team, and you have seen your team. Yesterday might
have been the best case of resilience. When they came
down and score a touchdown, Boom, turned right back around
and went score a touchdown. Then they tied it at

(05:49):
thirteen after the interference and then Warren's touchdown. Boom, you
go right back down and score again offensively to bounce back,
and then the defense after they'd scored, okay, we're gonna stop.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Him twice holding to the field going the last two drives.

Speaker 6 (06:02):
Resilience seemed to be kind of the key offensively, all Right,
you're gonna score, we're gonna answer, and we're gonna show
our resilience to go back and take the lead from you.

Speaker 5 (06:09):
And it was cool to see. It was cool to
just fill it two from our sideline. It was everybody
was just even Q. You felt the confidence amongst our sideline,
like the offense did.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
They moved the ball really really well.

Speaker 7 (06:22):
Fair.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
They had a lot of chunk plays. Defense was getting
off on third down making some stops. We were attacking
the football. Jalen had a couple passes he was so
you felt like, Okay, we're kind of in control here
of the game. And you know, when you feel that way,
it's like, Okay, no matter what happens, I feel like
we made plays before.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
We'll go do it again.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
What about your new reserve quarterback Cade Stover? Very interesting stuff.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
It worked.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
I know it didn't work at the end on the
third and fourth down, but on the third it looked
to us like you had it but whatever. But it
was creative, it was different and it was effective.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:58):
That goes to also just coaching. You try to switch
things up. Things haven't worked that we tried before. So
you gotta not keep doing the same things, right, And
so that was a play that.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
We wanted to do.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
Kid had done it before, he was on the center before,
so try to throw that in and it worked.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
It was effective for us. I'm with you. I think
we got the we got the first down on third
and that's I was like, no, do that again. If
that that wasn't the yard, Like, let's try that again.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
So I really liked just changing it up, giving given
the defense something else to, you know, try to defend
that they haven't seen from us.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
We're you a little worried that they tried it beforehand
and they watched it because.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
No, I said, we're gonna do it better. Don't worry
no words word.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Because you've always I've always wondered this.

Speaker 6 (07:45):
And as a defensive coach, team wins the coin toss
and they say we want the ball, I would think
for your guys yesterday when they said that, I would
imagine it's like, whoa, they want the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Against us to start the game.

Speaker 6 (08:01):
What's the feeling like for you and the defensive staff
and the defensive players like, oh, is it oh they
want to test us?

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Or is it just okay? We got to go play ball,
or mix a.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
Bot for us, Let's go play ball. It's something that
Shane has actually done a lot, you know, throughout the season,
where he's taking the ball, and it's kind of it's
been their game plan of how they've gotten the lead
on a lot of teams. They take the ball early
and they try to get up a school early. They
try to have you playing from behind, so that that's
been as strategy as work form before. But our defense

(08:34):
did a really nice job of shutting that down very quickly.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I know you like seeing great defense, but also great
defense is thirteen play drives. Fourteen play drives to keep
the other team's offense off the field, and even if
you don't get a touchdown, you held the ball for
a long time and you've done it numerous times this year.
You're a very high time of possession team in this league,
top three or something like that.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
So what about that part of things?

Speaker 5 (08:59):
Coach, that part, you know, it's or we control the game,
and we control it just not by being in a rush,
as I tell our guys, I want to methodically just
drive down the field, take our time, methodically drive down
the field, just get positive plays. Whatever that looks like
we don't have to always go for the chunk play,
explosive play, just throwing it up a fifty to fifty ball. No,

(09:21):
let's let's methodically get guys open. Let's make great decisions
with the football. Let's mix in our run, our play
action pass, and let's just drive down and once we
get across man field, now we're in striking.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
This is now let's go score.

Speaker 5 (09:34):
I feel like we can also finish some of these
drives better by finishing in the end zone, doing a
great job of driving, controlling the game. But now it's
even better when you can control the game and finish
the drive with seven points.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
We talked all last week.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
We knew what job number one was for the defense,
that was stopping twenty eight. When you look back at
the film, coach A, how well do you think you
did in that regard and be holding him to feels
pretty good.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
What was the key in doing that?

Speaker 4 (10:04):
The key to stop in the row it was tackling.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
I thought everybody tackled really well, even on the Probably
my favorite player of the game is the fourth down
one that they fumbled the snap on the tight end sneak.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
They fumbled the snap and.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Just watch how all of our guys just finished and
tackled like that's what the defense looks like, right, And
that's Jonathan Taylor Again. I would say he's one of
the better best backs in our league because he's just
so elusive. He starts the ball frost side and he
can cut back in any gap. So you have to
remain patient, remained disciplined, and I thought our guys did

(10:38):
that for the most part. A couple of runs got
out on us when we weren't disciplined in our gaps,
but when we were where we were supposed to be
and we tackled, well, there's nowhere for them to run
the ball.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
What about second and two when you come up with
a big TfL with Mario and Will and now it's
third and seven and they don't get it.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah, that's that's where we wanted to be. You wanted
to create some negative plays on the early downs, get
them in third and seventh plus that's where they They
didn't live much where they've been successful as an offense.
They lived in third and two to five a lot.
And when you had third and two to five, you
have everything at your disposed. You can run the ball,
you can do, play action, you have everything. So for
us getting them in third and seventh plus making him

(11:16):
have to drop back, we felt like that would be
our advantage in this game. And you know, our defense
did a really nice job with third down.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
And you only ended up with one sack. Yeah, now
that's kind of have Noma.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
We've talked about this for a long time, coach that
you know sometimes the defensive story isn't told through sacks
when guys are dropping back.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
How did you.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
Feel like the pass rush was effective with Daniel knowing
that he was a little banged up, watching Warums, didn't
look like he's moving around all that well. Was that
something that you guys, I don't want to say, pray
to palm. Was that something that you guys took into
account as you were rushing him that it wasn't going
to quite be like Josh Allen the week before, that
you could do some different things against him because he
maybe wasn't moving as well as he had before season.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
Yeah, knowing he wasn't moving as well, so we probably
fired a few more pressures than we would normally run,
and so we didn't get the sacks per se. But
I felt like we got the pressure on to make
him speed up his throats, and that's what we wanted
him to do, speed up the throws.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
It worked for us.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
Our guys were in position, they were making plays on
the ball, tackling when we needed to tackle. But and
I feel like, also it's just when we had some
one on one opportunities on the early downs in the
play action passing game, like we got to be able
to win those one on ones a little bit better.
So it's still there's some improvements to be made.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
On our d line.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
When we have the one on one rushes, there are
some opportunities where I felt like we could have closed
it out a little bit better.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Coach, in your press conference, you talked about your central
message this week and maybe a lot of weeks, which is, yeah,
you're happy you won, but you feel like there's more
meat on the bone and you can play better than you.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Have no doubt about it.

Speaker 7 (12:51):
Man.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
You always want to get to win first, and that's
the first thing. So we got the win, great, and
now is to come back. And as we really dissecting
the tape and looking at it, it's like, man, we
can be so much better, Like, how do we give
this play up when we work this play, or how
can we have this penalty where we're not. It's like
so many little things I know we can improve upon

(13:13):
as a team, which we as a coach is that
we're just talking is low hanging fruit. It's small things
that we can just nip in the bud that I
know we have a really great team and they're still
even better out there for us. We just got to
make sure we're locked in every single time we line up.
Make sure we're locked in, make sure we're doing all
of those little things, because that's what's gonna happen the

(13:35):
bigger these games get down the stretch, It's is gonna
come down to the fine details.

Speaker 1 (13:39):
As a coach, you're the teacher. So the students, if
you will, are doing better than they did earlier. This season,
we see a trend getting better.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
Grades are getting better. It's im grading, it's getting better.
We're doing a great job. So we gotta gotta keep
going up. And that's one thing you want to see
in a season.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
Right you.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
It's not about how you start, but it's about who
are you becoming as a team, how you grow, and
how you getting better. And I really love the growth
of our team O line and settling in doing some
really good things. I mean CJ the quarterback, Davis played well.
CJ's playing playing goods first game back. So our receivers,

(14:17):
they're playing different guys making huts, making plays.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
Higgins niak.

Speaker 5 (14:22):
It's like a lot of different guys making plays. And
I see the growth of our team. I see where
we are and now here down. The stress is just
about remaining locked in, just one at a time, controlling
what we control one at a time, finishing with the win,
whatever it takes, however it looks, it doesn't matter. Just
finish with the win.

Speaker 6 (14:40):
Could you know I'm contractually obligated to ask you about tackling,
but we already got into it a little bit about
this one.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
So I'm gonna ask my question looking forward.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
Because the guy WePlay Sunday night we all know very well,
and one of the things that he does best is
exploit bad tackling. And that's Patrick Mahomes. When he gets
out of the pocket, whether it's escaping a tackle to
make a throw, escaping your tackle to scramble for twenty
how important does the tackling become? Just I know the
running backs are good, But just on him in general,

(15:08):
how big is the tackling got to be and how
good is the tackling have to be to slow him
down for making those type plays.

Speaker 5 (15:14):
Yeah, the main thing with the tackling with him is
you never never assume right, Never assume that you know
he's throwing the ball, never assume that he's like, just
go finish. You're a play like if he's scrambling out
of the pocket, and make sure you just have body
on body, making sure you're clean with him going out
to play, always understanding he can throw the ball at
any given time. He's not really looking to scramble and

(15:36):
run the ball like he is looking to throw the ball.
His eyes are always downfield, so secondary has to be
aware of that, making sure you're sticky on your covers
and the guys who are rushing, you know, kind of
similar to the Josh Allen piece. He's a bigger player,
strong guy. Just have to make sure you finish.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Coach, I know that you played them twice late last
year December and January. It's cold. It's gonna be cold
this weekend. It was cold last year. You're used to it.
Going up to Arrowhead Stadium in a good way. How
does that help you knowing the environment, knowing what you're
gonna be dealing with on Sunday night.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
Yeah, I'm excited for it because, like you said, Mark,
like we're used to you know what it is. You
know the environment. We've been there before. We were just
there last year two games. It shouldn't be new to anyone.
Like what the how that environment is gonna be. And
if we can just focus on playing better football in
Kansas City and finishing like that last game we had,

(16:32):
we just we're close. The closest is gonna map. Those
games are always gonna be close. Kansas City really great
football team. They've won a ton of Super Bowls here
over the past few years. Like it's gonna be about
playing four quarters of football, discipline, fundamental focus, and finishing
the right way.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (16:50):
These guys, I mean, they've got so many different guys
we could ask you about. But I want to ask
you about a group that I think everybody's talked about
for a long time, and it feels like this group
is kind of settling in Coach and you mentioned them
a little bit. I want to talk about the offensive
line and what that group coming together and playing together
and what you're seeing with them having some continuity kind
of game after game being that same five.

Speaker 5 (17:12):
And what you see is you can see, you know,
just better communication up front, whether it's handling a game,
whether it's Tightest and Tay on the left side, like
if you sense an alignment, Tightest can communicate with Tay
and on Hey, expect that this te game is coming
and we can pick it up the right way. Whether
it's on the right side.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
You know, you have.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
Trent and Ed they're working double teams just being on it,
or Jake and Ed in the middle working doubles. It's
just when you work with a guy consistently, you would
expect that, hey, I.

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Know how we're playing.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
We have that kind of you know, unsaid communication or
it's non verbal. We can just say, I know how
we're fitting this, I know where we're going to And
the more and more we can do that, the better
we can be. And again, offensive line wise, I think
and we've done some good things the past two weeks,
but again there are still some better things we can
do when it comes to getting up to the second

(18:06):
level on the linebackers.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Coach every few weeks, you know, I like to ask
you how you handle practice, because here we are in
December now and five weeks to go in the regular season,
So how do you handle practice the physicality of such
being later in the year now, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
The physicality it tones down right now at this point
of the season. I got they know how to tackle,
they should, they should, they better know how to tackle now,
but don't really want that physical grind on their bodies.
The seasons are long, as we know it, so as
we get later in the season, how handle practice is
just more mentally focused on understanding what are you facing

(18:44):
like trying to get those plays. Not so much of
the physicality of putting on the past block and tackling,
but it's just understanding mentally where you need to be
and get in as many reps as possible.

Speaker 6 (18:54):
Okay, I remember hearing Peyton Manning have done this many
many years ago. He anticipated rain, he would go out
and he dunk the balls in water and then you
throw water log passes throughout just to get used to it.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
What can you do for cold, especially.

Speaker 6 (19:09):
In the environment we live in, Coach, is there anything
to mimic the cold?

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Can you put the put the balls in the freezer?

Speaker 6 (19:14):
And that's what CJ and the receivers, you know, practice,
But what what.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Can you do?

Speaker 6 (19:18):
Is there anything that you can do to be prepared
for a decently cold night?

Speaker 5 (19:23):
Hey, if anybody has any tips, let me know. Well
for me, I'm intalis. Hey, you got a man up
three hours, let's go to work. No matter what the
conditions are, you man up. Especially with the cold weather. Hey,
put on something warm, not too warm, put on enough
where you're not worried about it. And my mindset is

(19:43):
always man you go in the game. It's like you
got to psych yourself out mentally. Also, it's like I'm
not worried about the weather, Like, put that behind. You's
gonna be cold, get over it.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Now, what are you going to do? It's cold for
them as well?

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Coach, we know you like to make these videos every
week and sometimes you tell us what you put in
these videos the players because you like to teach with video, right,
it helps people's attention spans and whatever gets the message across.
But from the game against the Colts, I think the
Ingram block. Okay, there are certain moments here. We talked
about the TfL on second down and two what other
things stood out to you is moments from that game

(20:17):
where you might say, hey, Tim, show this man that is.
Does anybody else help you with that? Like coaches have
suggestions and things like that.

Speaker 5 (20:25):
When I go up, the coaches will have some suggestions
of plays that they have, and I already have my
list of plays that I want to show, and then
they kind of pare it down with all the coordinators
will give me clips. But it's a I think a
mere speed showing up his first like his first rep,
you know, as a textans showing up, splitting the splitting

(20:46):
the double team on the pun and going down and
making a play. I thought that was that was a
huge play show of course is I mean hughes block
he knocks the goal off his feet, definitely showing that one.
Uh some of the CJ the keeper roll into our right,
rollatory sideline and the throw to cast over. Yeah, great

(21:06):
catch right there. So it's a it's a lot of
good There's a lot of nice plays in there, a
lot of physical plays as well. Kamari always showing up.
I got the heat he fired and blitzed on one
play and hit hit Daniel Jones and see their sideline
They're looking like, oh what happened with the corner blitz. Like,
so it's some really good things that happened all across

(21:28):
and there's always some fine details that you can see
also with you know how guys are celebrating people on
the sideline. May see Johnny over here celebrating.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
The team meeting as well.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Yeah, yeah, I got, I got. Can I make it?
Can I make one suggestion?

Speaker 4 (21:45):
Bring it on?

Speaker 3 (21:47):
There was a there was a new linebacker that played
the other day.

Speaker 6 (21:50):
I had not seen him play a linebacker throughout this year,
Number fifty one, new linebacker.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Oh yeah, from the middle.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
Can we put that one on there as well?

Speaker 7 (21:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (22:01):
And that that was impressive.

Speaker 6 (22:03):
That kind of worried me in a sense, coach, because
I saw the guys go in and you were getting
to a point and this is you talked about it
in your press conference about you bring nine defensive linemen
in the game. And the whole point is like, and I,
if I remember correctly, the drive after we scored the touchdown, Dylan, Derek, Tommy,
and I can't remember who else was in there, but

(22:25):
it was not it was not Sheldon and Daniil And
will you mix those guys so much so when you
run those guys out there. I see who's going out there, like, Okay,
well I look and Will's not outside.

Speaker 3 (22:35):
I'm like, where the hell's Will?

Speaker 6 (22:36):
I just watched him go in like he goes, and
all of a sudden, he just ran right through the
center to force a throwaway on Daniel Jones.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
Can we put that one in there too.

Speaker 5 (22:44):
That one that may be the first.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
Coach I'm gonna put you on the spot here because
this weekend there's a game between the Jaguars and the Colts.
Oh boy, so you've played both teams recently, and I'm
not asking you to predict the result, but talk about
the matchup a little bit because that's an interesting one.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
Yeah, that is an interesting matchup.

Speaker 5 (23:05):
I think Jacksonville defensively, they're playing really well. Defensively, they
found a way to score some points offense. I think
it'll be I think it's gonna be a tough battle,
depending on if the Colts can get the what they
do at the corner situations. I know, losing Sauce, what's
a huge one for the Colts, just schematically with how
they wanted to play defense.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
Now they had to go to more zone covers.

Speaker 5 (23:27):
So I think it's gonna be a tie with if
they can rattle Trevor with some of the pressures that
they have. I think that'll be the key for the Colts,
you know, to get to win. For the Jags, the
key to get to win for those guys, man's gonna be,
you know, can they expose and can they get Brian Thomas?
Can they get those guys open in his own coverages?

Speaker 3 (23:47):
Okay, let me ask you easier one.

Speaker 6 (23:48):
There's another game going on this weekend that involves the
Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.
This one, I think you probably got rooting interesting, made
light just a little bit.

Speaker 5 (24:02):
Just a little bit, got him one time this year.
You gotta go do it hard, hard to beat him twice,
but go get it done time.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
There's your head coach, Tamiko Ryans. Plenty more with him
coming up, including the postgame locker room speech and Demiko
and Johnny have a private conversation. Well it's not that private,
because you're gonna hear it. It's public and it's coming
up at the end of the program. Also, we'll hear
from Jalen Petrie, who got back in action yesterday, he
caught up with the postgame show guys Sean Pendergast and

(24:30):
Clint Sterner. It's all happening here on Texans Radio. Right
back into the fray here on the Tamiko Ryan Show
following the Texans win over the Colts and in advance
of the Chiefs game on Sunday night. Gotta get them.
They're six and six, they're desperate. More on that later.
Let's go to the locker room. After the game, head
coach Tamiko Ryans addressed the team.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
And end of today.

Speaker 4 (24:59):
Man, we talked about I'm in here taking what we want.

Speaker 8 (25:01):
Everybody. It took everybody to you here, coaches, players, every
man in here stood up, made a play. We need
to make a play. It took every second on the
court to finish this thing. But that's what it's about.
Coming in winning the Divisital games is a tough opponent,
and we got to see these guys again. Great job
right there getting the first one. Now on to the
next one. Let's keep it going, everybody. Great job, complimentre

(25:23):
football all the way around. A lot of great things
you guys did. Most important thing what we come here
for is the dope.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
What up Texas.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
We'll go back into the locker room before the show's over.
John Harris is gonna catch up with the head coach
and also Sheldon Rankins in a celebratory locker room.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
You gotta hear this.

Speaker 1 (25:40):
Not a long conversation, but a real good one with
the guy who had the only sack of the game
for the Texans yesterday on Daniel Jones, Let's get some
thoughts from former Jamaica Ryan's teammate and the Kalou part
of our Texans preseason TV broadcast crew Texans legend, and
he liked what he saw yesterday.

Speaker 9 (25:57):
You know, it's great task CJ. Stroud Back and the
offenses kind of continuing to pick up the pace. But
this defense has proven to be a historically great defense,
especially when you're compared it to other Texans teams. And
it's the little things. I mean, I know John and Mark,
I know you sa all this, but I know John
could appreciate this. That pick on Rankings sack, so oh yeah,

(26:21):
the d line stunt where Autrey is supposed to pick
the center and he just blasted the center. The pocket
collapsed and Rankings gets the sack. But it was such
a team sack because of the way the front four rushed.
I mean, this defense is a real deal. And shout
out to a ziz A Shire because he's still making

(26:42):
plays where you're like, oh, he probably shouldn't have done that,
But what he's telling you is, Hey, I don't care
about what people think about me. I don't care about
the past penalties. I'm still going to play my brand
of football. And it just resonates throughout that entire defense.

Speaker 6 (26:55):
Andy, the defense yesterday, if I'd have told you that
they were only gonna have one sack going in, especially
against the guy that's got a fibula, as Shane Steiken
called it, would you have been worried and.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
Give answer that?

Speaker 6 (27:10):
But also, how did you feel like they got enough
pressure on Jones even though they only got the one sack.

Speaker 9 (27:18):
No, I definitely would have been worried because I was
watching the game here in Waco, so of course I
was listening to y'all call the game, and John, you
did an awesome job pregame talking about Daniel Jones. He
still doesn't look one hundred percent. He still has a
little bit of limb. So when I heard you say
that before the game, I was just smiling like, oh,
we're gonna have another eight sack games. So if you
would have known me then with everything that you said

(27:41):
pregame that they were still only gonna have one sack,
I would have been concerned. But then the way it
played out and the fact that they focused on Taylor
and they were able to look like Mark said, slow
him down, You don't completely stop the guy like that.
He still had over eighty yards. You know, he still
had what considered to be a good day. But when
you when you factor in everything and all the big plays,
they may win and counted. I would have been okay

(28:04):
with it. But yes, going into that game knowing that
Daniel Jones wasn't healthy, I would expected more than one
sack and.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
D thoughts on CJ's return has to pick twenty two
of thirty five. He throws for two seventy six in
the game and make some big throws along the way.

Speaker 9 (28:21):
You know what I like about it, Mark, He's knocking
the rust off, and I still expect him to have
better games. I still expect him to play even better,
play even more lights out, and they still won the
game with him playing. It wasn't pedestrian by any means
it was a good game. Like you said, one interception
but no touchdowns. He was sacked a couple of times.
I can still see him elevating his game and for

(28:42):
him to be kind of getting back into the groove
of things and still be able to put up those
type of numbers. He understood who his number one target is.
You know, Nico Collins every week is really solidifying himself
as one of the top wide receivers in the entire
NFL and not just the AFC. I'm actually excited about
it because I'm expecting CJ. Stroud to play even better
when they take on Kansas City, And with the way

(29:02):
the schedule is going, with what this team's trying to accomplish,
he's going to have to continue to get better. I
actually would have been a little more. I would have
been more worthy if he had one of those four
hundred yard games, four touchdowns, no interceptions, where you're thinking, ooh,
is that what it's going to take to win? But
I felt like he had a game that he could
approve upon and they're still winning.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
And dy, what about this team winning four in a
row right now? What do you think the vibe is
like inside and the belief that they have that they
can do some really big things down the stretch and beyond.
Now that they're really they're establishing an identity on offense
with this ground game. It's not always as productive as

(29:44):
they want it to be, but they stick with it.
They got CJ back, obviously the defense number one in
the league.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
What are your thoughts.

Speaker 9 (29:51):
Here's what's crazy. I think as far as the belief
and the confidence, they probably felt this way when they
were zero and three, you know, and now is coming
to fruition because a guy like Demiko, he's a little
bit prophetic. He's gonna tell these guys, hey, one game
at a time, we can still dig ourselves out of
this hole. And when you look at what this team
has been able to accomplish, I don't think that they're surprised.

(30:12):
So Mark, they're probably not thinking to themselves four games
in a row, four games in a row, it's just
one game at a time. It sounds cliche, you're hearing
on every level of football, but you just get the
sense with the Miko, the type of player, the type
of coach he is now that he's preaching it and
they're really believing in it, right now they're only focused
is Kansas City Chiefs, and it's the fans on the
outside looking in that could appreciate this role. I would

(30:34):
not be surprised if they have another three game you
know that, if they win another three games in a row,
because you're just looking at it one game at a time,
and when you look at the schedule, there isn't a
team on the schedule remaining on the schedule where you
just say to yourself, there's no way they can win
this game.

Speaker 6 (30:50):
And Dy, it's the Chiefs this week Sunday night. Everybody's
going to be watching. And it's that guy quarterback. That's
probably the guy I look at every time I see
I feel like and it isn't so much because it's
the seventy yard throw, it's you know, it's the five
yard scramble or whatever. It's the plays he makes with

(31:11):
defensive lineman hanging all over him, Like last year, he's
got Mario Edwards at his ankles falling down and he
hits Kelsey for a touchdown. How maddening is it for
the defensive lineman to face a guy like Mahomes and
knowing that that's the way he plays, and that's what
he produces. How much of a different tack as a

(31:34):
defensive lineman do you have to take. You can't hit
him up high, you can't hit him low, but you
got to make sure that you do hit him and
bring him to the ground. How tough is this for
defensive lineman to go against the guy like him?

Speaker 9 (31:47):
Very very tough because he's so slippery and he's just
a playmaker. You know, he's one of those guys. In
my opinion, I don't know what his stats look like
this season. He's still the best quarterback in the game,
and you get up for a quarterback like Mahomes. But
here's the thing, John, With the way that the Texans
played and performed against Josh Allen, I think you just
go out there and treat him like any other quarterback.

(32:07):
You don't start to get in your head, Oh if
I'm too aggressive and I'm not aiming at the upfield shoulder,
then I might miss a sack. The way they performed
against Josh Allen, I think they take that same mentality
against Mahomes and say, you know what, We're just gonna
hit him. We're gonna hit him hard. You know, we're
gonna tackle him in a way where we're not holding
on for dear life, We're gonna hit him and knock

(32:28):
him down so he doesn't have a chance to make
that extra play. But I just feel like you can't.
You have to almost disrespect him and the thought of
him when you go into the game.

Speaker 1 (32:38):
Anddy, what about the rotation with the defensive lineman. I'm
looking at the snap count right here, Danil Will and
Sheldon Rankins played sixty three percent of the snaps on
defense and Tommy fifty four, Barnett forty percent. So it's
a healthy rotation. It's not exactly fifty to fifty with
some of these guys. But I saw some instances where

(33:01):
daneil Will and Rankins all came back into the game
at the same time. Maybe obvious pass rush situations, but
your thoughts on the way they rotate things with the
front four.

Speaker 9 (33:10):
I was pleasantly surprised at that, and I actually noticed it, Mark,
I noticed it because every time I'm looking and i'm
watching the game, I'm looking at the trenches, and more
times than I expected, I didn't see Daniel Hunter, Will
Anderson in the game. Yeah, and to the point where
you're saying, as great as those guys play Demiko and co.
They truly trust the entire defensive line and that's something

(33:32):
that we've seen since preseason. You know, we talked about
the entire defensive line unit, not just the two superstars,
and how great they were and how they play together.
So when you look at that rotation, especially this late
in the season, it's gonna bode well for late in
the season and dare I say the playoffs, because you're
not gonna feel fresh, but you're gonna be that You're

(33:52):
gonna be more fresh than you would be if a
guy like Danil Hunter, Will Anderson or playing eighty five
ninety percent of the snaps every single week. So and
keep in mind they're still making plays. The pocket is
still collapsed, and they're still tackled for losses. He still
killed the same energy and that's only going to help
you later in the season as you make that playoff push.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
There's end Kalu coming up, John Harrison, Demiico Ryans in
their postgame conversation, plus Jalen Petrie on the post game show.
You got to hear it all here on the Demitico
Ryans program. It's Texans Radio Packed. Final segment here on
the Demitico Ryans Show, and let's get right to it.
Jalen Petrie came back from the protocol and played well
against the Colts in the victory, and he showed up

(34:34):
as a guest on Texans post game with Sean Pendergast
and Clint Sterner.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
Here's how the conversation went.

Speaker 10 (34:40):
A lot of chatter out there about the thing to
do in this game was too did Jonathan Taylor kind
of the head of the snake for this team?

Speaker 3 (34:46):
Jalen?

Speaker 10 (34:46):
And if you shut down Jonathan Taylor, you can shut
down the Indianapolis Colts.

Speaker 3 (34:50):
What did you think?

Speaker 10 (34:50):
How did you feel about the way you guys played?
Did you know as far as the game plan was
going in, how well did you guys execute what the
coaches were looking for you to do.

Speaker 7 (34:59):
I think it was pretty solid.

Speaker 11 (35:00):
But sorry for the backgrounds, okay, but I thought it's
pretty solid.

Speaker 7 (35:04):
You know, it was a couple of a couple of those.

Speaker 11 (35:06):
Plays where he got out, but there's definitely some things
we need to clean up and get better for the
next time.

Speaker 4 (35:11):
We play them.

Speaker 11 (35:11):
But I think overall it was definitely good enough to
obviously get to win, but we're definitely gonna clean up
some things for sure.

Speaker 12 (35:18):
What Demiko talks a lot about y'all's ability as a
unit to to to lock in and obviously y'all are
leading that in that area, but it's it's on a
monster stage at the end of them near every single game.
Can you can you take us through the mindset of
of you and the defense and in those moments when
you know it's it's third and long, fourth and long,

(35:39):
that drive is for all the marbles.

Speaker 11 (35:41):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing that comes to my
mom when you say that is accountability. Like everybody on
a defense is accountable for their job.

Speaker 7 (35:47):
And then you got eleven guys doing that.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
You know, it's very hard to be beat.

Speaker 7 (35:50):
So that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 11 (35:53):
We all take our job very seriously and and all
eleven is trying to make the play. So you know
when whenever the opportunity to against yourself, you know we're
going to take advantage. But yeah, we look forward to
those moments as a defense.

Speaker 12 (36:06):
Hey, what do you guys, what do you guys attribute?
I mean, you've been playing this game long enough. I
played for a long time. I'm aware of it. I mean,
what you guys have in that locker room is extremely rare.
And when I say that, on the defensive side of
the football, it seems like every guy we talk to,
whether it's Demiko Ryans or or or or one of
one of the other defensive players, one of your teammates

(36:26):
on this show, it seems like the accountability and doing
your job and all that which is typically coach speaking
a lot of organizations. Man, is the cloth that each
one of you guys are cut from. Like, how rare
is that? In your experience? How rare is it? And
how do y'all get everybody to buy in and believe
into that? Really from the from the heart, not just

(36:47):
talk to talk.

Speaker 11 (36:49):
I think it's it's just really important to all of
us because we see what happens when we all do it.
You know, it's kind of like the standard here, so
everybody does it from left to right, top to bottom,
whatever you want to say, like, and it's very contagious.
So I think that's a huge reason why we're successful
and why we're never satisfied, and we're trying to continue
to get better and find new ways to you know,

(37:11):
hold defenses to nothing like that's the ultimate goal, like
to win games. You know, our offense is obviously, you know,
great and can do a lot put a lot of
points on the board. But you know, as a defense,
your job every week should be to hold them to
a shutout, you know, and if it's not that, then
then what are we doing? And I think everybody feels
that way and it does nothing but help.

Speaker 10 (37:31):
Did you know that's the first time that the Colts
have scored less than twenty points all year at least JP.

Speaker 7 (37:37):
No, I didn't know that.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 7 (37:38):
Didn't know that. But it was a pretty solid game
for us, and we're thankful that we got to win.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
Yeah, it's good.

Speaker 10 (37:43):
Yea, I was gonna say, it's not a shutout, but
you did better than anybody else has playing that team
this year, so you can feel good about that. Hey,
before we get you out of here, saw that you
were wearing the Guardian cap. Obviously we know you were
in concussion protocol the last few weeks. Was that a temporary.

Speaker 3 (37:56):
Precautionary thing that you're doing or are you thinking of
going with that moving forward.

Speaker 7 (38:00):
I'm probably gonna go with that moving forward.

Speaker 11 (38:01):
You know, after speaking with Sony professionals and some family members,
we thought that that was the best option for now.
But yeah, just really thankful to just get back out
there with my team and get to win.

Speaker 12 (38:14):
One really cool play there were several, but one really
cool play that was fun to watch was was watching
Will Anderson lineup at middle linebacker depth and literally just
just put the center on skates and and sit him
in Daniel Jones's lap. What what tell us about that
play from your perspective? I know you guys had worked
on it and tell us a little bit about it.

Speaker 11 (38:33):
Yeah, it was it was drawn up that way and
when you know, you put the ball, the ball in
Will hands, he gonna do what he do.

Speaker 7 (38:40):
You know, he walked the center back and it made
it very easy for the DBS to.

Speaker 11 (38:45):
You know, handle our assignment because the ball was out
pretty quick. So yeah, our coach did a good job
of drawing that up and Will did a good job
of executing.

Speaker 10 (38:52):
It'll be a fun one to watch on film. Watch
it this week. I'll tell you that it looked great
on TV. I'll tell you that.

Speaker 4 (38:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (38:59):
Al Jalen Petrie, Texan safety, broke up a couple passes today,
had a few tackles, was around the ball quite a bit,
as he always is. It was great to have number
five back out there. Hey, Jayalen, we appreciate you making
a couple of minutes for us here on Texans post game. Man,
go celebrate the win and we'll see you back in Houston.

Speaker 7 (39:14):
Yeah, thank you all you having it blast night.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
There's Jealen Petre on Texans post game with Sean Pendergast
and Clint Sturner. Now victorious Texans locker room. This is
short but sweet. Loved the music in the background. Good
stuff from Sheldon Rankins, who had the one sack in
the game.

Speaker 2 (39:29):
Johnny Harris visited with him.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
Sheldon went over the colts man, it's big.

Speaker 6 (39:33):
We've gone it before, but this one was big. Number
one offense in the league and you guys sell him
the sixteen.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
How'd you get done? Yeah?

Speaker 13 (39:40):
Man, it's a collaborative effort. Eleven guys on the same
page all game. No, we knew they will make some plays.
Talented offense, talented players, they've showed it all year long.

Speaker 4 (39:49):
But we know what. We held it together for four.

Speaker 13 (39:51):
Quarters, played consistent, disciplined football. We feel like when we
do that, nobody can beat us.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
What does it say about this team? Sheldon?

Speaker 6 (39:58):
You guys are sitting on You walked in that lock
through Master Jacksonville and that loss to now be seventy five,
tevery one, seventy last nine or whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
What do you think it says about this TV?

Speaker 13 (40:10):
Yeah, I think it just shows man, the perseverance from within.
I think you know, outside the building, you know, it
felt like the world was on fire.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
You know, everybody counted us out.

Speaker 13 (40:19):
Everybody's like, oh, you know, we can just go ahead
and look elsewhere. They won't do nothing. Great defense, but whatever,
we just put our head down to work. We understood
the formulo. We understood that. Man, once we get it clicking, nobody.

Speaker 4 (40:32):
Can beat it. So now we just stayed the course.

Speaker 13 (40:34):
A great leader at the top with the Miko and
his messages always resonate down down the line. And when
you continue to follow his lead, and you look where
we are now.

Speaker 3 (40:43):
Take me through that fourth to nine year right when
Joe tried to challenge Sting and that ball hits the drownd.
You're getting the ball back. What are you guys speaking
at that moment?

Speaker 13 (40:51):
Yeah, at that point, man, we were looking at it
like man, we held up our end. You know, as
a defense man you relish those moments to be out
there to close out the game and give the ball
back to the offense to run run the clock out.
And that's what we did. You know, obviously, you know,
trying a guy like Sting, you know, in any part
of the game, you know, in the smartest thing. But
you know Sting showing up the way he does h

(41:13):
in that situation, in that moment, that's why he is
who he is.

Speaker 3 (41:16):
Sheldon, was a hell of a win.

Speaker 4 (41:17):
You had a help of perfomance, my man.

Speaker 3 (41:18):
Thank you so much for your time. Man, I appreciate you.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
Sheldon Rankins in the victorious Texans locker room with John Harris. Okay,
Johnny caught up with head coach Tamiko Ryans afterwards as well.
And I always love this conversation, especially after a victory.

Speaker 3 (41:31):
I gotta think that this one ended about the way
you wanted.

Speaker 6 (41:34):
Your defense gets a fourth down stop and your offense
and runs the clock out.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
I guess it's about the way you want to end
the game, right.

Speaker 5 (41:42):
I'll take it out every every happens, man, but you
get me. How we did that, how we finished the game.
It was very impressive, right for our defense to go
out for down territory there for them to finish.

Speaker 4 (41:54):
Nobody blink. They knew they would make a play man.

Speaker 5 (41:58):
Guys, that was an outstanding drive by men and then
for our offense to go out and it took literally
every second that we needed to finish it with the
old lion Woody CJ, with the communication, all the guys
did a great job of handling right those four minute
situations that we have to close out.

Speaker 4 (42:14):
Exceptional job.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
I want to ask you about a couple of players.
I'm gonna start with CJ.

Speaker 6 (42:17):
His return and what you thought about how he performed
today against that coach defensive Yeah.

Speaker 4 (42:22):
CJ played winning football.

Speaker 5 (42:24):
He made a lot of good throws for us, made
a lot of good decisions some things, of course, always
you want to clean up and never it's never perfect,
but that's okay. You just keep battling. Like I really
loved the drive after the interception. How he can bounce back,
go down, take our team down to drive, like remaining
confident no matter what the situation is, no matter how
bad it may look, just because you gave the ball away, man,

(42:45):
you bounce back and you keep making plays, you keep punting.

Speaker 4 (42:47):
So I love the way. He just battled throughout this
game and the guy that.

Speaker 3 (42:51):
Should have gotten a game in and punch out, but
it didn't get caught that way. With Jalen Petrie, you
talked about having Jalen.

Speaker 4 (42:57):
Back man fired up to have it back.

Speaker 5 (42:59):
You just see the impact fact that he has on
the game with whatever it is, a passing game, he
gets the ball out, running game, he's tackling like he's
just an exceptional football player that has to be accounted for.
He can we can do a lot of different things
with him, moving him around a lot of different spots
because he's a smart player, physical, tough, and he plays
with the unmatched intensity.

Speaker 6 (43:20):
Y'all rush him by about twenty yards. Your third down
percentage was better. You had thirty five minutes seemingly of
time of possession. Everything that you and I and Mark
talk about how he coaches show that you want to
be able to do it, seemed like you were able
to do that today.

Speaker 3 (43:34):
What was kind of the biggest key to.

Speaker 6 (43:36):
Just establishing we're here and this is how we're gonna
win this football game.

Speaker 5 (43:40):
Yeah, we have a formula that I think where everybody's
picking up on how we win games. Offense being able
to sustain drives, go on the long drives there to
open the game, and also you know, to start to
have finished with field goals there.

Speaker 4 (43:52):
That's all right, we want to get.

Speaker 5 (43:54):
Seven, but the finish with points on a long drive,
and then our defense goes out three and out getting it,
stops taking the football, not getting the couple, but taking
the football, being around it, getting a huge fourth fourth
down stops, two fourth down stops that completely turned the
game around. For so, I mean, we have a formula.
We just keep sticking to what we're doing, find a
way to win games. Doesn't matter how it looks. It's

(44:15):
all about how we finished. And we've been finishing in
a very nice fashion in the past couple of weeks.

Speaker 12 (44:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (44:21):
Absolutely, I mean it's so nerve racking, but you know,
getting the wins, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (44:25):
Don't tell me about it.

Speaker 6 (44:26):
Yeah, there's one of you up here. This one's big obviously,
now you've won seven or nine. I asked Sheldon this
question when it was zero to three and we weren't
Jacksonville and you and I are talking. We're like, we
can turn this around, but it's a long way to
turning it around.

Speaker 3 (44:41):
And now we've got it turned around. I know it's
not where you all we ultimately wanted to go, but
it's at least the cargo ship is going in the
right direction.

Speaker 4 (44:48):
No, yeah, we're we're headed in the right direction.

Speaker 5 (44:50):
You can easily get down about things and how the
season starts, but we understand, like to make your run,
do what you need to do, Like it's all about
how you.

Speaker 4 (44:58):
Finish the season.

Speaker 5 (44:59):
A lot of people st aren't great, but they don't
finish great. Like we're in a spot where it doesn't
matter how we started. Even the games that we dropped,
we knew, but we needed to clean up to finish
those games.

Speaker 4 (45:10):
And now we've corrected that.

Speaker 5 (45:11):
We're doing those things the things necessary to put us
in position to win games, and we're finishing the proper way.
So we just keep going how we're going, keep finishing
how we're finishing. I mean, sky's the limit for this team.

Speaker 3 (45:23):
Coach, congratulations, he can we win?

Speaker 1 (45:24):
Thanks Johnny Harris with head coach Tamigo Ryans right after
the game, and I'm hoping for a similar vibe after
Sunday's game, in which the Texans will take out the
Kansas City Chiefs. That's a seven to twenty kickoff on
Sunday Night Football Live right here, Can't wait. Kate Stover
is going to join us on the show tomorrow night.
Can't wait for that at a full week of programming.

(45:47):
Nick Cassiri on Wednesday, and we'll get to it all
as the week progresses. Texans seven and five winners, a
four in a row, seven of their last nine. Let's
go Texans. All Access coming your way next a night,
Go Texans.
