Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's happened? Everybody?
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome to Wednesday this year Texans All Access a wet one.
Wherever you are, it has been wet for the last
couple of days.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
But who do love a wet Wednesday?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Texans All Access Sean Harris alongside the Voice of the Texans,
Mark Vandermer. We have smiles on our faces because even
though it was wet, we went inside.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
We went inside for practice for the first.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Time all year, seeing a decent majority of this Texans
squad all together.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
And we will have thoughts were from Demiko.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Rans will do a Texans audio jukebox in our next
segment because Demico had a number of different things to
hit on. But Mark gut reaction first impressions that hit
you as we were out there watching practice today.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Defense is loaded, no boy. Yeah, that's something that jumped
out to me. And even though not everyone was there,
it's voluntary, as coach said, and I know we'll be
featuring coaches comments later on. The defense is low so dead,
and the offense it's gonna be a little bit of
a construction project here, but I think it's going to
be really good when they get it all done. Because
(01:08):
you think about it Pierce wasn't out there for whatever reason.
Mixin's not out there, so you're down to Dara and
Woody and you're down to Jordan, Joar Jordan, JJ Taylor,
who is don't forget about me guy, by the way,
not to jump too fast or too far ahead here,
but JJ Taylor, this is the reason why I'm still
on this roster right now. So we'll see how things go.
(01:30):
But work in progress. You got Mills out there with Slovas.
CJ was not throwing, he was handing off, So something's
up there. But coach was very clear that everybody's got
their own schedule.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
So something's going on.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
But I don't can I go Bill O'Brien on you
here and say it's probably not life threatening, because I
think we'd know about that. I think that it would
be something that would really be concerning to this whole organization,
and it would probably get out somehow. Remember this CJ
needs training camp.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
For all we know.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
CJ will be out there Friday throwing the football, maybe
next week, maybe in two weeks, maybe not till training camp,
but he'll be thrown at some point. And you don't
play a game for over three months, so you got
to keep these things in mind.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
This is still very much the off season.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
I think there's just plenty of PTSD as it pertains
to arms and throwing arms in this city, if you.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, oh, I see Ronel Blanco now going to have surgery.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
There's some PTSD there. There's no question. Falls different. Man.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
The arm is so it's not that it's fragile, but
it's so particular.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
You know, football, you feel like.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
You can get out there with some issues and still
slinging around. A little bit dirt on it, Yeah, rub
some dirt on it. It's fine.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
I just think there's some PTSD from that probably.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
But look, I'm gonna take everybody at their word for
right now, and there's no reason not to.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
And look, it can be a lot of it for reasons.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
It could be just getting guys a different look, could
be you know, there could be I know I used
to have this in baseball. I used to have dead arm,
Like it didn't hurt, just dead because you just throwing.
Call you're constantly throwing and throwing and throwing and throwing
and throw. I mean, it doesn't it didn't matter. And
I remember at the end of the summer. I watched
(03:17):
it back on video and it didn't look like at
an issue. But every time I threw the ball, I'm like, God,
I feel like I'm throwing a like a popcorn bag
over there, just lobbing it over there. That's what it
felt like. When I saw it on film, I was like,
I look that bad, But it was a Marmer's dead.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
That's the way it felt. So when you.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Start adding up all the throws that a quarterback is
gonna make, not just CJ, but just any quarterback is
going to make between now and let's say you make
that long run and you do get to the AFC
Championship game, you do get to the Super Bowl. I mean,
just think about added practices leading up to an AFC
Championship game.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
You know, three more practices.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
It's just throwing swing routes to running backs, circle routes
to running backs, throwing that deep comeback. It can take
a toll, and so sometimes not you know, just stepping
back and kind of making sure that you're healthy and
ready to go. It's it's a marathon, it's not a sprint.
I know a lot of people will well it's probably
(04:14):
been reported today we didn't listen to much as we
came back in here before we did the show. But
I'm sure it's been reported about you know, who was
there who wasn't. I don't know that I lose sleep
over that. I really don't when it comes to Otz. Look,
you'd like to be able to get guys there, but
as Dimkoh emphasize, and we'll get to that, it's voluntary.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
It's volunteering.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
You and I both know a lot of the guys
who were reported to not be there today. We've seen
him in the building. Yes, they've been around. Yes, So
it's not like they're not here. They're in Australia or
something right there. Right, they are engaged. They're not in Egypt. Right,
they're just doing different stuff. Or maybe they're banged up,
or maybe they're not. Maybe they're just not going to
get out there till either next week or mandatory in
(04:59):
two weeks. Is mandatory mini camp June tenth through the twelfth.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, and that's and we'll we'll see at that point
in Look, guys, this this team has gone from being
we're playing rookies as soon as we draft them because
we had to too. This is a team that's got
it's got some seasoning on it. Oh yeah, So there're
gonna be some guys. I mean, look, C J. Garner Johnson.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
I know that he is.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
You know, they traded for him, and you'd like to
make a great first impression or whatever case might be.
That dude played football almost through the middle of February.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
So I got no problems if he's not hanging around
or if he's not here, I just don't. I don't
get lost in all that that A lot of people
will kind of get lost in with ots and mini games.
And I think part of that is, you know, people
leave this building and they go to radio show or
they're an article or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
They're out of this building.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
They're away from it, or you and I we'll leave
this building and we'll go watch. We'll go not watch,
but we'll go see the guy as we're talking about,
like him in the hallway, much like we know, we
know they're there, so we don't panic as much about that.
And and probably for good reason.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
But I get it because it's stuff to report, that's right.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
A lot of people they're not going to report, Hey,
how's the new long snapper looking.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Although in this city.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
That might not be a good example Addington because people
want to talk about that or people want to hear
about how he's looking.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, we'll get we'll get to that.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
We'll get to that one of the first It's funny
how you and I both noticed the same thing, and
it wasn't the only thing going on, and we were
not in the same spot, but we both noticed it.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, you walked up and you said something to me,
and I looked at you, like, are.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
You in give it away? Now? I was watching it
the same thing that Tucker.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Addington long snap looks really like a bullet.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
It looks different. There are on that thing.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, and I go back to which putter or whoever
said it to us about It wasn't Weeks himself, but
they were talking about Weeks and the long snap and
points six to eight seconds to get back a punter
or something like that. It's possible that it wasn't the
same after a while. Maybe it was the same, Maybe
it was exactly the same thing. I don't know, but
(07:07):
whatever we saw today, you know, and you never take
John Weeks for granted because he was pitching a perfect
game his whole career here. But maybe it was time
to get younger and clearly for whatever reason, and they
couldn't come to an agreement or whatever the case was,
or they decided they could go in a better direction.
I don't know, but Addington out of Sam Houston State,
it's a rocket going back to Tommy Townsend and we'll
(07:30):
see how it plays out.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
You know, he's got to be accurate.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
He's got to be doing what Weeks did for over
a decade for this football team. Not saying he has
to do it for over a decade, but he has
to do that level of performance minimal.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
So we'll see how it works in it's seventeen games.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
I mean to be perfect, to be that guy that
you don't mention his name. Yeah, I mean you will.
You would mention Weeks's name a lot, you know, you
give him, But it wasn't, Oh no, it's a safety
because John Weeks had a bad snap.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
It was never it was never that, which is just phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
It would we talk about this all the time when
it when it pertains to the draft, Well, the guy
can do it, but it's consistency. Well the guy can
go up and snatch one out of the air, but
then he drops three that you know are easy catches.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
It's consistency. We talk about consistency.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
All the time, and that obviously is what Tucker Addington
is going.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
To have to do.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Sure, are all great athletes, They're all capable of a
high water mark that's gonna be really terrific. But you're
making a great point there. Can you be at that
level or at least near it often enough where the
downside of whatever performance you might have is not going
to affect the team badly?
Speaker 1 (08:40):
So let me go back to your defensive thought real fast.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, and I'm just gonna say the name, and I
want you to to go with your thought.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Okay, Camari Lassiter, he.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Just gets in the way of everything, man Like, can
we get a practice done here? You know what he
reminded me of today, the miniature Ota version of Will
Anderson in training camp last year, where you can't get
anything done because Will and Daniel are in.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
The backfield and the quarterback has no time to throw.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
So how are we gonna learn to play offense if
you guys keep disrupting everything?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Well? Today, how are you even gonna do seven on seven?
Speaker 3 (09:12):
If you throw Lassiter's way because he's getting a hand
on the way there. He's getting a hand on the
way over this place, he's jumping. They're aware of his presence,
so they're throwing it differently. Both the quarterbacks who are
available today to throw Keaton Slows and Davis Mills, so
Lassiter is on it and Derek stinctly. I mean, my gosh,
(09:32):
this is crazy to have two guys of this caliber
because Stingley, you and I were watching them field punts
and don't get all bent out of shape people. I'm
sure this is for insurance purposes or late in a
big game.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
People get hurt. We need somebody to catch a punt.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
And trust me on this, You've said this best hands
on the team. Look, I don't know who's the best
hands on the team, but he's definitely in the conversation. No, no,
because he's catching punts and I guess they wanted them
to do it one hand.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
As part of this, they were.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Doing a one handed left handed catch, one handed right
hand catch. Then they would put both hands around their
back yep and then have to react at the last
second to catch it, and then a regular catch.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
And he had nope, didn't drop one, and the balls
just like.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
This is a defensive back back there and looks unbelievably
great at it, Like I'd love to see what he
could do with the football in a punt situation. Yet
I don't want to see it because I don't want
to risk it and another guy back there. I know
I'm bouncing all over the place. I'll let you take
the next topic. But yes, that was my thought on
last like, how can we get better on offense? If
(10:35):
Lassiter is on the defense, you almost got to pull
them out of there so you could just get.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Some rhythm going.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
It's hard for the passing game seven on seven, eleven
on eleven to get any kind of rhythm because these
guys are so good, they're so long, they're just the
hands are everywhere in the path of the football.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
It's crazy how good they are.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
And I know the recipe today for the offense seemed
to be and I didn't hear this from Nick Keley
or anything, but it's like they were working on the
short stuff today. Yeah, they're working on a little quick outs,
maybe undersnags.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Just trying to get somebody open, get make the catch.
Remember those of those cars from from way back in
our day growing up, You take them and you'd kind
of pull back and as you pulled back, Yeah, there
was like a there's like a rubber band in there
or whatever catch and you basically like at the number
of times you load you pulled back, you like load
it up and then you let it go, and that
(11:24):
thing just went all over the place.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Eventually that thing would run out of energy, had stopped.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
You have to go pick it up. You do it again,
Kamoria last year. You don't have to do that too.
You want Kamario last year up one time and that
he stays at that level the entire practice. He's over
there getting more juiced up for when the threes are
out on the field making a play than when he
makes a play.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
His energy is off the charts.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
But you have to think that he's his second year
and it's only getting better.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
You feel like that's contagious. Yes, throughout the entire defense unit.
You commented on this while we were watching the amount
of juice those guys.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Have the field, and we could hear them after a catch.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
They're like if they you know, they held a catch
that was supposed to go longer to three yards, They're
going nuts like they just won the Super Bowl. This
is OTA's day one. They're like that, they've got that energy.
They bring the heat, they bring the juice. Now the
offense construction project, a lot of new faces. Offensive line.
They they got it going, they made it.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
You want to go there?
Speaker 2 (12:30):
You want to go there, because I'm sure we've gotten
enough into second, please.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Talk about the offensive line. That's all we care about
in our lives right now.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Let's preface all this by saying there are no pads. Yeah, okay,
there's no pads. So it is not the collision sport
that it is. It's the contact sport right now, and
that doesn't really help you to a degree get an
idea what this offensive line is all about. They were
all different kinds of combinations to that of combination with
(13:00):
the offensive line. Here are a couple of things that
I just I observe just from that. First of all,
whether it's right side or left side, Titus Howard is
a guard going.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Forward in this offense. I think it is a FATA company.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
We can talk about Titus going out to tackle if
there is any kind of emergency, right I think that
after watching from the Miami game, on watching him at guard,
I think they're this this staff, this organization convinced he's
a guard. We like him at guard and there's no
(13:40):
looking back, Like you perfect that position, Titus, Like that's it.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
You're at guard.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And I think the way that this will turn out,
it's going to end up being to the betterment of
this offense life for number of reasons. Number one, once
you get into third down situations. How think about our
third down pass rush at the end of the year
when we got teams the third downs. We had Will outside,
we had Danil outside, we put Denico Autry inside, and
(14:08):
then we would put another defensive line, be it Mario Settle, whomever,
just in case or is that small opportunity for a draw.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
But you would put a pass rusher on the inside.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
And a lot of times you do that because why
you're trying to get that pass rusher an edge guy
matched up on a guard guard can't handle it, and
all of a sudden, that third down comes. That's Titus
Howard and now you're rushing one of those pass rushers
against the guy that played tackle. I think it helps
you there. I think it eventually helps your run game.
But I came out of there going, you know what,
he's a guard.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
They know it.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
He knows it, We all know it going forward, and
I think that could end up being one of the
best things to me to come out of today, is that,
because I think he can be a very good guard.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Robinson left tackle and nothing else. Nothing else. Left tackle
and nothing else. He moved a little bit.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
I saw Wie on the right side a little bit,
so he did some left, he did some right, and
they're they're coaching him up. And when I say coaching
him up, I mean it is almost after every rep
there's discussion, there's talk. It is let's you know everything,
And that to me, for a rookie, that is the
best thing.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Imagine on the fly, on the job.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Break those bad habits or if there are any, get
them doing it the way that you want him to
do it, and set and start that foundation now so
that three four years down the road he's got it.
But man, he is one strong soob oh good god,
he is strong. Like you could just see the strength.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
You could.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
You know, you're right, No pads and look they're not
going to get as vicious as they would because there's
no good point, there's no payoff.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
When you get to the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
You cannot do what you want to do in a
regular exact situation.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
As Will would say, you can't finish on the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Yeah, so he's just pushing guys around, pushing guys downfield,
bulldozing people in this context, I'm not gonna get carried
away with that.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
But it was a nice first day. I mean, right,
come on, he's the rookie out there this first day.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
Eleven on eleven OTAs okay, great, yeah, keep it going.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
So the center position is going to be one hell
of a competition of a feeling. When we would discuss
it and have discussed it, I think we've left somebody else.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
We've left somebody out at times.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
And that's gonna happen because Jake Andrews is a guy
that came along late in the process. He's a guy
that came from New England. Claimed him all waivers, they
bring him here to Houston. Cole Popovich knows him, you know,
having spent time with him at Troy. When Cole was
at Troy, and Andrews was the center at Troy, and
he ended up getting an opportunity to go to the
(16:43):
Senior Bowl.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
He went to the Patriots.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
He was hurting twenty twenty four after doing some things
in twenty three, he comes here in twenty twenty five,
and I remember when we signed him. I thought, I
remember talking about Senior Bol and I liked him. He's
a former wrestler. You see that, and you know how
much I like the wrestling part of it. I like
other sports and how they play in I like wrestling
for interior offensive line guys. And so we're walking across
(17:11):
today and I happened to see him in front of me,
and then I remembered, oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Jake Andrews is here.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Ah, you know lo and behold he could that competition,
whether it's Jared Patterson, Jake Andrews, where they move Juice
in there. All of them got reps at center today.
Juice got reps at center and guard. So I think
it's I think center is going to be one hell
(17:41):
of a competition.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
You need everybody. You need everybody right now. This is
not all You have three quarterbacks, you don't have one.
You need all these guys. I saw what hap it
as Scotti two years ago. You need all these players
and everything we're saying. By the way, it's week one
of OTA. You got to check back with us on Friday.
Because they might juggle the lineup a big time by Friday,
and then by two weeks from now, you're gonna see
(18:04):
some progress from some people that we might not even
be talking about right now, whether it be O line
or somewhere else, and especially somewhere else because again on
line progress, OTA's no pads, really, but they're gonna see
some nuances. I like watching practice with you because you
spotted Cole Popovich and the way he's coaching this team
(18:25):
on the job. I mean, snap to snap, which is
something that we haven't always seen around here, and I
think that it's fresh. It's the way people learn. And
we've talked about him before. He has this intensity that
I cannot speak for him, but it seems like last
year Chris Strassa the coach of the offense, does Cole
(18:47):
feel comfortable enough to really get in there and coach
the offensive line the way he wants to.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
I don't know. Maybe he did feel comfortable, maybe he didn't.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
It just seems different right now with him being the
head coach of the offensive line, if you will.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
The other thing.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
That I kept thinking about as I was watching the
offense and you talked about, I think this is This
is a huge This is a huge aspect. This is
a team that is learning this offense, trying to produce
against this defense. So it's gonna be fits and starts.
There's there's no question about it. What I like thus
(19:22):
far about the offense goes back to that point.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Of who's there at practice.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
It's everybody offensively, I mean, it really is, other than
some guys that are banged up. They're running back position
a little bit banged up. You know Dari and you
mentioned Dari Jawar what he marks and j JJ got
a bunch of reps today.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
And I'll be honest in OTAs, I kind of like that.
I kind of I do like that.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
If I know that my guys are gonna be okay
in training came, which you never know, I'd like to
think they are. But if I feel like Joe and
Damien and the rest of the care are gonna be
okay bout training camp, I'm not gonna sweat it. I'm
gonna look back OT's and go Those are valuable reps
to get huge reps to get you're running behind the
first offensive line, But for the most part, offensively.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Guys are there.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Yeah, that had not been the case for the last
five years, for six years now obviously covid all that,
but you never were going to have your what could
be your starting offensive line at all. You weren't going
to have it right, So you just weren't because you
might have never going to be there.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Now now you have an opportunity to have that.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
In fact, everybody's there that I can think of other
than guys that are banged up at this point.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Yeah, and you mentioned the running back position. It's a
great point you make again, and I do like that
dares there. You might think, oh, we know what Dari
can do, yet you want Waddy Marx able to watch
Dara handle the pass pro part of this thing. Because
if there's one thing you can learn this time of year,
it's where I'm supposed to be this play, this kind
of protection. I've got to do this during this play.
(20:53):
And Woody can be right in there watching and learning
from Dara, who's very good at it. And you know,
unfortunately for this guy might steal his job, but he
might not. Who knows, you know, how did what he marks?
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Look? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
He looked good. He caught the football a few times
and nothing. Look, it's a running back during OTA's our
eyes are not going to pop out by and large.
You know, I thought JJ had the best run of
the day, just watching him cut right in front of
us a couple of times. JJ Taylor, He's got some moves.
I mean, there's a reason why he was on the
fifty three man roster last year.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Yeah, no question. I think JJ's got something.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
I think all these guys, even Jure, looked very comfortable
running in this offense.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
And so that was like, okay, let's lodge that away. Okay,
other highlight.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
You want to get to the last play of practice,
which will lead us into a discussion, yes, of a
particular group.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
I know everybody wants to talk about other an offensive line.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
A lot of people don't want to talk about the
offensive line because they're like, well, just just get back
to me a training camp.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Oh, they want to know the lineup.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
They want to know then I want to know how
it looks and all that kind of Lake and right
tackle Blake, Yeah, Blake, right tackle, ty Us is that
right guard, and then Lake and Tomlinson, the long term,
longtime vet left guard his entire career. And I remember
Nick saying at the press conference He's like, look and
this can go for a team as much as his
draft picks. It's like, you know, some guys are one
(22:10):
position only. Some guys are versatile and they've got position
flex and maybe Laken Tomlinson is left guard and left
guard only. Yeah, who knows. I'll tell you this, Cam
Robinson looked good. It's I mean, I just looking. I
mean we've seen him twice a year, you know, playing
with Jacksonville, you know, but just being reminded of it
seeing him out like, man, he looks good, like physically
looks good. So last play practice, Jayden Knowle, rookie at
(22:36):
Iowa State, runs the sale route right at Mark and I.
It's one of those things where if you're in a
huddle and you're like, okay, coach, what I need to
run this route? He's like, you see those two radio
guys over there, run it towards them, Okay, Because.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
He literally is running right at us, and we had
a great look.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
He catches the ball on the sideline and then it's
like feet just bang, bang, two feet in bounds.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
That's the catch. Get out of the way. We had
got a Johnny.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
I really I almost pulled a hammy trying to get
out of the way.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
It was right, I mean, we were from each other.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Bowling pins, going over absolutely games this fall problem. Yes,
Jalen Knowle has taking me out for the season. If
I don't move, like, if we're just talking and not
paying attention.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
We're dead. They're dead dead.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
In fact, I don't know what I was looking at,
but I glanced over. I'm like, oh, Nole's running right,
and he's going to catch this pass, you know, And
I got out of the way.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
I mean, you know, I'm more used to that than
you are. I just kind of started to move.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
You're a sideline monster, and I'm not. So I got
out of the way. But yeah, that turned out to
be the last play of practice, and you brought up
the man of the hour, one of them. Anyway, Jalen
Knowle just looks like he belongs I've been waiting to
say this, and I said, I would say this about
the rookies. I wouldn't say this relative to rookie camp
because they're all Brookies. They belong with the rookies. But
(23:56):
if you look like you belong with this group, then
you're saying something. And he looked like he belongs with
this group he did, and just watching him in the
punt return drills and then running routes, and his body language,
the confidence with which he carries himself.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
I'm eager to see it. Now.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
You might be thinking, well, didn't we drap that Jayden
Higgins before him?
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (24:18):
We did, and he looked fine. Yeah he looks fine.
One thing about Higgins, Higgins is a big guy. We
all know very much. So Nico collins in the same
group with the receivers as Higgins. Nico's a bigger guy. Bigger, yep,
Nico's bigger. Nico's different. Nico is a special human to
have on this sketball team.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Nico has put time in the weight room, he has
he has not missed leg day.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
He is And I try to tell people that when
you know, we talk about they asked me about Nico,
and I'm like, y'all realize that is a strong sob.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
I go back to the Bears game.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
I tell people this all the time, Like, if you
won't really want to know Nico, go look at the
last US played the first quarter, in the first play
the second against the Bears on Sunday night, he gets
in that little dust up with with Stevenson because Stevenson's
being a jerk, and so he basically puts his finger
(25:10):
in Niko's face and like smushes him like in the head,
and Nico reacts, got a fifteen yard penalty, came over
the sidelines, was angry at himself that he got the
fifteen yard penalty, but then.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
Was like, I'll get it back.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Very first play of the second quarter, they threw him
that slant route and he basically hammed Stevenson tried to
press him, and he just moved Stevenson out of the way,
ran the slant, turned it up field, ran over a
safety and threw another guy, spun and got in the
end zone and I'm like, holy hell, Like he went
and got it in then.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Something.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
I don't think people realize how strong nkos.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
He's like a power forward playing receiver.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
So he's got those strong he's quick, he's got those
tight end aspects because he's big. He's got the big,
big target, big catch radius thing going for him, and
he can get yack big time. He gets vertical, like
you've always said. So I enjoyed watching him, just seeing
him today. Yeah, Nico Collins, Yes, football team.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Jaydan Higgins like you said, it's a good point. Jayden's six'.
Four he hasn't filled out yet Like nico. Has but
if he, doesn't it's fine as long as he can
go catch the football and get himself.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Open are they both listed at six? FOUR i think they,
both THOUGH i Think nico's a little. Taller i'm JUST
i think he's a little. TALLER i don't think they're
both listed at six. FOUR i don't have the tape
measure with. Me what does the program say sixty Four
nico And? Higgins higgins is eighty, one and it just
gives he's six to. Four but one might be like
six three points something and the other might be it
(26:42):
Just nico looks. Taller BUT i could be. Wrong so
but either white ball in. It Jane higgins doesn't need
to Be.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Nico, no he just takes get himself, open make the
catches when, available and take pressure off everybody else in this.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
OFF i w don't know.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
Who, look we're all over the, place but what the
heck It's ota has got you, know one hundred players
to look at. This Danny, Jackson, Oh Daniel, Jackson, Minnesota, yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Uh this is going to be.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Interesting he lookie and he made a catch today was
A Danny.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Jackson huh, yeah. Welcome he was running.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
A dig route and the ball was SO i could
See keith and slows throw the ball before he even.
Broke AND i see slower slow the. Ball i'm, like,
oh that's. Trouble i've seen this ball in complete millions of.
Years here And jackson turns and the ball is on
him as soon as he, turns but it's on, him
but it's it's away from his.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Body so he's got to turn and as.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
He's, turning accelerate through it to catch you with his
hands to snatch.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
It and he.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Does mike, like holy get polished very. Much one, play
but it's good to see a good. Play he just lacks.
Measurables he lacks the, size he lacks the. Speed but
he's really really good at. Everything in a battle with
The Johnny johnson's And Jared, WAYNE i know there are
different body types and, everything but he's going to be
in that battle And mechi's in that, battle And mechi
(28:07):
looks physically, different so that's.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Good, yeah he looks when you, say, go looks.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
Thinner it doesn't come off right like it looks like
it's he's redistributed his weight that.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
He looks he looks, thinner he looks more cut to
me in a. Way so let's see what that triz
like chisels and they were going to. Him they put
him out. There oh, yeah by the, Way Christian, kirk you,
know veteran POLISHED NFL.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Vet No watson out there.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
Today Justin watson did not See Justin, watson did not
see him out there. Today, Uh luke lasche.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
Good first.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Day, yeah he caught a nice ball that was thrown
a bit behind him and reached back and got. IT
i was, like nice. HANDS i think we're going to
be pleasantly surprised With Luk. Lashev, look there's a long
way to go. Here, again the defense is going to
blow some things. Up even In. OTAs you don't HAVE
cj throwing. Yet but see it's a day to day.
Thing friday will be out there, again we'll comment on
(29:03):
It friday.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Night, yeah it's gonna. Be it's already.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
Fun but when you look out there and you're, like there's,
staying There's, Nico Christian kirk is.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Here the entire offensive.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Line everybody won't receive from the offensive line just having
those those. Opportunities you, know we have Mentioned Ariana. Airsri
he did move over to the right side a little,
bit but he's.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
On the left.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
SIDE i talked about pushing guys around. Them, yeah, yeah we.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Did talk about him a little. Bit i'm just trying
to think if there's anybody that we. Missed oh, one
one other. Guy we've actually seen him twice a year
for the last how many every?
Speaker 1 (29:35):
YEARS J speed AND i don't know exactly WHERE. Ej speed.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
IS i don't, know like When Christian harris is, healthy
When Henry totoa is fully, healthy, LIKE i don't know
how that mix goes. Together BUT. Ej speed just looks the.
Part like he looks the. Part he is long armed and.
Fast it is weird to have him.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
HERE i.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Know it is really weird me, emotionally JUST i know
SUCH i worry about you when it comes to such a.
Cult AND i was right next to him for that
such a cold it was not a time for me
To i've not met him in the dining room. Yet
it was not the time for me to introduce with
myself on the. Field, uh because it's got to come off.
RIGHT i have to be able to describe my. Feelings,
yes so that he understands that you're not being, creepy
(30:21):
that this just you, know, listen you're just full Of.
TEXANS i don't like the horseshoe and we're glad you're. Here,
yes but you know he's gonna want to get, them
So i'm all, in let's.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Go. Absolutely he just really impressively. Moves we talked about.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Secondary caitlin's wearing number two, now so we gotta just
but it was it was just good to see these
guys back in the. Fold not everybody, there but not
really not really sweating anything But, friday and this is the.
Key we noticed this In CJ's rookie. Year the offense
(30:57):
got better FROM O T a TO O. Ta, yeah
mainly we were WATCHING. Cj but it just got better
from practice to. Practice so how does the offense Respond
friday when we get a chance to see it, Again.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
Well especially If CJ's throwing by that, yeah and he
might not, be but he might. Be who knows he
did hand. Off they want to get the concepts. Down
he's at, practice he's learning it the New Nick cayley.
Offense so it's day. One it's a work in. Progress
let's keep. Going, yep it's gonna be, fun all. Right
Texans Audio jukebox coming up your. Head Coach Tamiko ryans
(31:31):
had thoughts on the first day OF, OTAs the tush,
Push Christian, kirk building chemistry with the guys, Here, gelling
especially the new. Fellows will discuss all of that next
right here On Texans All.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Access step and, everybody we'king back This wednesday edition At
Texans All access From, Monday Texans Radio.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
STUDIO i am your, Host John, harris football, Analyst.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
Sideline reporters tip For Texans audio jukebix which means we
get to hear from today's, guest and.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
That would be To Miko.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Ryans here were coaches thoughts after the first day OF
OTAs that's been visited by the.
Speaker 5 (32:12):
Media first day of OTA's were very excited to get
on the grass and actually be able to go against each,
other compete in a controlled. Environment THAT i got guys
at a really good job of. Handling by the, way
we came out today and SO i told our guys
is a great first, day great starting. Point now it's
just about stacking days and getting better these. DAY i
feel like we have the right guys the right attitude
(32:33):
will do.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
That guy's good to get out.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
There, obviously As mark AND i pointing out the first
segment to see the, guys see how they. Look number
of guys not there due to injury or other, circumstance not,
there but feel like they got some good, work especially
defensively defensive you know.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
SOLID i, mean we know this defense is going to
be really really.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Good you, know the offense has got some learning curve
to go, through there's no question about. That speaking of
guys that were not, There coach discussed that right.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Here this is.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Voluntary is not about managing guys who aren't. Here they aren't.
Here it's.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
VOLUNTEER i think one thing That tamiko is really really
really good. About if it says, voluntary it's, voluntary and
he's not gonna look one way or the other at. It,
oh if you're not, there oh shame on. You or
if you're, there oh we're gonna elevate.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
You, no it's. Not he hasn't really looked at it that.
Way everybody is gonna be there.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Eventually if they're not there for ota is are gonna
be there for man to Heard Mini camp then for
training camp obviously the most important thing to prepare for the.
Season but he's not gonna lose his mind now that
said as, MARKET i point, out the entire offense line is,
here and that is a good.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Thing said.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Coach it's beneficial to always have during this time a
voluntary time where guys don't have to be. HERE i
think it's very beneficial if guys are here because you
can get a lot of good productive work. Done understanding the,
scheme understanding the, terminology things that we're, using actually perform
in their techniques and. Executing everything about our off season
(34:03):
program sets you up to compete come training. Camp so
the more time on, task the more you're able to
be here get coaching from our. Guys it's only gonna
help us when it comes training. Camp so every person
who's here will benefit from being.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Here, now say, no, earlier there are a few guys
that were not at. Practice it was a guy that
was at practice but wasn't, practicing and that WAS.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
Cj.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Stroud AND i know as soon as people saw, THAT i,
thought oh, boy here we. Go you never know, why
you never know what's gonna. HAPPEN i pointed it out
in the first segment we talked about that that look
could be an, injury could be you, know family member is,
hurt got attend to something going up at your.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
HOUSE i, mean it could be any number of.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
THINGS i think the fact THAT cj was there and
was taking in practice but not, practicing not, THROWING i
think kind of got everybody like. This, okay just three
the little. Bit here's a coach had to say ABOUT
cj and others not practicing.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Today for all the.
Speaker 5 (34:53):
Guys you see, here, guys there would be guys on different,
schedules different, Routines so you'll see some.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
Guys some guys won't be out, there some guys will.
Be some guys will be on different snap, count different pits.
Count so there's.
Speaker 5 (35:07):
Nothing going on right now within, there. Guys everybody's just
on their own.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Schedule one of the THINGS i think The texas have
done a really nice job of dating all the way
back to WHEN i got in a building at twenty,
fourteen was, yes it is a team, sport but to
give each player an individualized, plan AND i iep, Individualized,
well that's, education individualized education.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
Plan that's Why i'm remembering.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
It but everybody's got their own, plan and you, know,
look there might be a time where AS i said
earlier in the first, segment there are a lot of
throws in a football, season a, lot and if you
could take a day WHERE cj does not have to
make all those throws and you could just rest him
that day and just give him an opportunity to step
(35:51):
back and watch and, observe go through you know some
of the inside you KNOW od drills where you can
see the fronts and study that do the. Handoffs that's. Great,
LOOK i don't have any clue what it was or
what it. Is hopefully it's not an. Injury if it,
is hopefully you can get back. Soon but either, Way
(36:12):
i'm not panicked about. It coach didn't seem panicked about.
It and we got a long time before we got
to go to training. Camp SO i got a feeling
seventh's gonna be just fine amongst others that are actually
rehabbing at this time to get ready for training. Camp,
Okay Christian, kirk he is new to the. Squad everybody
(36:33):
really excited about what he can bring to the. Fold
we've seen him before in A jaguars, jersey and he
heard us coach knows, that but he talked about what
he saw From Christian kirk.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Today christian has been everything we could ask. For talk
about a guy who's he's dedicated to getting. Better he's
honed in on his, craft he's leading our young. Guys
he's a hard. Worker he shows up every day with
the right, attitude working, hard showing guys how it's.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
Done that's What i've seen from him entire.
Speaker 5 (37:00):
Career so just please and now have them on our
side being able to help us and help our younger.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Guys, Yeah Christian kirk has always been about. THAT i
know a lot of people At TEXAS a AND, m
AND i talked to them When christian was, there and they're, Like,
john you want this guy Into.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Texans AND i. DID i wanted that kind Of. Texans
it didn't work.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Out until, now AND i think there's plenty two plenty
For Christian kirk to do and to bring to The
texans that veteran PRESENCE i think in that locker, room
is in that meeting room is really going to help
those Young Wide.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Receiver it's still it's still a young.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Group you added two rookies to, it you, know you
brought in you Know Justin watson new he's got a
few years under his.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Belt but, man Even nico's ONLY i, say only in year.
Four my, god it's flown by.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
It, no this is year five For. Nico holy, cow, goodness, Gracious,
nico you're. Old, No i'm just kidding about, That. Nico
there's no. Question man watching that dude. WORK i, Mean
mark AND i talked about the first. Segment that dude
is really fun to. Watch, now the guy that has
to help them get the, football sometimes in creative, ways
is offense Coordinator Nick. Cayley every time Coach ryan's goes
(38:06):
to the, microphone he is asked about The texans DO.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Oc here's what he had to say. Today nick is the.
Speaker 5 (38:12):
Same it doesn't change from the MOMENT i interviewed him
to his meetings with the players and him being out
here on the field, Again i've spoke about it. Before
you see constant energy from the. Guy he's constantly teaching the, guys.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
Trying to help the guys. Best he's scaring he.
Speaker 5 (38:25):
Can so he's done a great job of leading a,
group leading the coaching, staff leading the, players And i'm
excited to see his growth throughout this.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
Process now whenever the offense is brought.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Up the first thing that, follows especially after the last few,
years what about the offensive. Line, now we talked about
it a little bit earlier in this segment about having
the offensive lineman there for, OTAs but is there a
specific focus for this offensive line group during OTA's considering
(38:56):
the fact that you don't, hit you can't be physical,
collisions sport is, out.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
The contact is. In there's a little contact with no.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Collisions here's coaches thoughts about what the old line can
accomplish during these.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
OTAs really to have OUR ota practices be, successful it
takes a lot of give and take between the offensive defensive.
Line so there is a fine line of just working
your technique at being in the right position but not
going too far where you're you, know you get a
bad spot where you want to push a guy in
the back or d line you want to finish a.
Speaker 4 (39:27):
Guy so it's a lot of give and take.
Speaker 5 (39:29):
There AND i commend you, Know cole And rod for
doing a great job of leading their groups to allow
us to have a, safe productive. Practice but one thing
where AN o line can benefit and they've been working
All phase two on just working really good low pads
like working great pad, level hand, placement, footwork those fundamental
those small details that allow you to be great as
(39:51):
an offensive.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
Line that's what you can work.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Here of, course as soon as practice was, over everybody
in the media scramble to get to Their twitter To
instagram to talk, about, well the first five was, this
and the second five was, this and then they did
this and all. That, well whole purpose is to find
the best five once you line up against The Los Angeles,
rams and that remains a focused no tas every single
(40:14):
practice and opportunity to find the right, five no matter
what it looks.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Like here's a coach had to say about, that this
is our.
Speaker 5 (40:21):
First day OF, ota so when it comes to finding
our best, group it'll be a lot of mixing and matching,
guys putting guys in different spots and, seeing.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
You, know which five guys work well. Together so one thing.
Speaker 5 (40:32):
About the old line is a lot of smart guys
in that, room and they can they can move, around
they can play multiple, spots and so that helps. Them
but it's just a matter of finding that five once
we actually can get in training camp put pads.
Speaker 4 (40:45):
On nobody's making the team right. Now it's shorts and.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Hellmes LIKE i, said the collision sport is, out contact
sport is. In there are a few things you can
glean from, it but not a whole heck of a.
Lot but just watching guys, MOVE i feel like just
watching the offensive, line guys moved a little bit more
fluidly than maybe in the, past and, UH i GOT
i got better feelings about this offensive.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
Line AND i, know, look it's the first A ota.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
Is you, Know i'm not gonna Get i'm not really
gonna feel great about the offensive line until those five
are hoisting The Lobardi trophy in the locker.
Speaker 1 (41:18):
Room after The Super.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Bowl BUT i feel like it can be a more
cohesive offensive, line a better.
Speaker 1 (41:25):
Five the proof is in the. Pudding we'll.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
See we'll start to get a good read on that
as we get into training, camp but at least o
tas you start to get a feel for how guys,
move can they work, together are they fluid and smooth
and all their motions and all that kind of.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
Stuff so there's some stuff you definitely can glean From.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
OTAs a guy At OTAs that we absolutely love Is Will.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Anderson, now he.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
Spoke to the media, later but coach was speaking about, Him,
now what.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Will has to do to continue to step his game
up and take it to another. Level as it's really,
again football is just about the smaller. Details so it's,
about you, know the get, off the hand placement as a,
rusher being able to convert on so many technical things
that he can get better at as a rusher that
would allow him to take his game to the next.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
Level the final piece right here of the. PUZZLE i
love to hear BECAUSE i love joint. Practices love joint.
Practices and as soon as the preseason schedule was, OUT i,
wondered would we have practices with The, vikings The, panthers The,
(42:32):
Lions and the answer is, no, yes, Yes so nothing
