Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello Texans, Welcome to the program. Great to have you
listening tonight. It's a weird Thursday because it's Wednesday. Football wise,
team practicing today for the first time, but it is Thursday.
That means we got our usual Thursday night show and
there's nothing usual about having the General the Hall of
Famer on with us. John McClain, Mark vandermin and John
Harris with you. All right, General, here we go to
(00:21):
Seattle and we gotta wait till Monday night at nine
for the game.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
I'm on pins and needles coming off the buy your
thoughts on facing the Seattle Seahawks again.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I think it's it is a great time for the
Texas to make a statement that they're back. Yes they
beat the Titans, Yes they beat the Ravens, but Seattle
is four two, four consecutive games against four and two
teams and this one. Seattle has been terrible at home
(00:54):
over the last two seasons, great on the road, and
this would be a time for the Texans to beat them.
You know, we were just talking about the two thousand
and five game in which we went up there for
the Texans playing the Seahawks, and I believe that was
a primetime game, Yes it was, and the Astros were
in the World Series. I was the only person there
(01:17):
from the chronicle. It was a terrible game for the defense.
But the last last time up there twenty seventeen Deshaun
Watson's rookie year, and he was incredible and Russell Wilson
led that late drive to pull out an unbelievable game.
And I would expect this not to be highest scoring
(01:38):
like that one, but close. And if the Texans can
win it for their third consecutive victory, I will predict
right now they're gonna go on a six game winning
streak and they're gonna beat the Niners. They're gonna beat
the Broncos, and they're gonna win that next one against Jacksonville,
have sixth game winning.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Streak, and then after that is Tennessee. Yeah, going to
win that one.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Of course, that would be kind of nice about happened.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Man, that you talk about eerie parallels to twenty eighteen
at that point, if you go if you win this
one and then go on that that winning streak, because
that would end up being what seven in a row
at that point My math is crowing on maybe not,
but yeah, so, I mean it would have eerie parallels
to twenty eighteen.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
From that standpoint, we just focus on beating c Yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Know, I know, speaking of Seattle, that twenty seventeen game
that needs its.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Own thirty for thirty. Yeah, it does.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
It needs its own thirty for thirty because there were
so many things that happened, Yeah, on that weekend, including
the Astros winning Game five I think it lost Game four,
but one Game five, Wild Game, Wild Game. As we
were driving by after the Wild Game, we had out.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
It's really one of the greatest World Series games ever. Yeah, yeah,
I think it is.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
But there are so many of them that were probably
forgetting in different areas, but that one Game five was
is unbelievable. We kept getting updates on the plane. David
Dune and I were talking about this on tech SAgs
radio or this week about that.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
We would get little updates.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
We would get just enough internet to go, oh, the
Astros are up nine to eight, or the you know,
the Dodgers have gone up ten.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
To nine or whatever it was.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
So it was always kind of interesting, fibly, but the
whole weekend is definitely worth a thirty for thirty. At
some point general, I'm gonna give you a sentence, you
finish it. The Texans will beat the Seahawks if not
that dot, if.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
They limit Sam Donald to fewer than two touchdown passes
give him one. He had four last year against them
all short. I think the key is, you know, you
want to keep him in check because they've got a
doubleheaded monster running game. But the Texans can shut down
Walker sharpon No. But I think the key is to
(03:50):
play better against Sam Darnald than they did last year.
Everybody else would talk about the offensive line and c J. Strap,
but I just think playing very well. Clint Kubiak is
in his first season, is there offensive coordinator and play caller,
and they're off to a great start. And so that's
what I think control Sam Daro winning a general.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
It's interesting with the Kubiak family because Clint was a
sophomore at Colorado State when Demiko Ryans joined the Houston
Texans in two thousand and six, and he's worked his
way up in his career and if he has a
good year here or two, maybe he's going to become
a head coach in this league. But to have Kubiak
versus Ryans in a way when you look at the
offense defense matchup, I know Matt Burk's going to be
(04:36):
the play caller on the defensive side. It's interesting, it's
intriguing to see what the Kubiaks have done because you
have one in Seattle, you have one in San Francisco.
You still have Klin who's with the Cowboys organization as
a scout or somewhere in the scouting department. It's a
fascinating storyline. Really to all of this, it.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Is Klient's gotten a little more responsibility now with the Cowboys.
I think someday he's got a chan has to be
a general manager. I personally think he needs to leave
there because nobody gets any publicity in their person metal
department except the general manager. And Clay, who was coach
here in high school, got hired by Kyle Sen. It
(05:15):
is a quality control, he's saying, hens offensive coordinator now,
even though Kyle calls the place where Clint has been
smart to take jobs as an offensive coordinator play caller
for a defensive oriented a coach in this case, Mike McDaniel.
Last year it was Dennis Allen New Orleans. Remember they
started with back to back forty something point games, and
(05:38):
they were the highest scoring team in the league, and
an injury just decimated them and they were all fired
and Clint went to Seattle, which has turned out to
be a really good move. I'm always there to the
first one that gets a head coach, and god probably
going to be Clint. I can't wait to see the
one that does. If they'll reach out to the old
(06:00):
man and see if he wants to be part of
their staff, even if he stays here and does it
from Afar.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
General, what's the one thing you think offensively the last
couple of weeks they did some good things, a number
of good things.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
What's the one thing that you think.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Will carry over?
Speaker 5 (06:17):
We hope it all carries over, and there's a lot
of success, whether it's protection, whether it's getting the ball
to everybody, whether it's running the ball. Well, one thing
do you think the Texans will be able to carry
forward from their offensive success before the buy those two wins?
Speaker 2 (06:31):
What do you think carries forward for them?
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Better be the past protection. They'll be under the microscope
National TV. You know that first National TV parent parents
one point lost to Tampa Bay and in this one
they've made so much progress the last two games, really
last five quarters up front, pass protection and run blocking,
(06:54):
really good balance in the last game over the Ravens,
because we know if they tech Stroud, he's going to
throw the ball very well. He looked like in this
game against Baltimore, this crowd who was fearless and confident
and comfortable in the offense as he did as a
rookie and at times last year. And if he can
(07:16):
keep that up, you'll see the confidence growing across the
board on offense. And that's what the announcer is going
to be talking about. Everybody's going to be talking about
the Texans offensive line and has it really improved or
is the recent improved performance because of the competition.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
General if you were a general manager, would you hang
your hat on trying to get a veteran who was
in the wrong place at the wrong time, like a
Daniel Jones or maybe even a Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield,
or would you draft high if the quarterback and I'm
shaping this question, there's not a generational talent on top
(07:54):
of the draft, but you have a chance to get
a guy who has some experience who you might be
able to hit it big with, like Sam Darnold. What
are your thoughts on that subject, because quarterbacks come from everywhere,
and often you flame out with these draft choices. Sometimes
you're successful, sometimes you get to cej Straut, Jaden Daniels.
Sometimes you don't.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Thoughts, get a franchise quarterback, you got a draft one,
whether you're trading back into the first round to get
Lamar Jackson was turned out to be one of the
all time great moves for a team, Ravens moving back
to the bottom of that draft to select him, or
you know, these guys that are bouncing around like Sam Garnald,
Baker Mayfield, everybody that was with them originally with the
(08:38):
Jets and the Browns think if they stayed there they
would not be as effective as they are. They needed
to do that. They needed to bounce around until they
found the right spot with the right coaches and organization,
and a lot of it was them but touring. And
I think we definitely see that with Mayfield, and so
(09:00):
that is more of a crap shit. You know, Daniel
Jones on a one year contract. When Baker Mayfield got
his racing extension, he didn't want fifty or sixty million
a year. He took forty and the way he's playing
right now, he probably be the ice paid quarterback in
the league. And Sam Darls got about forty. And I
just think the franchise quarterbacks in almost every instance come
(09:25):
when you draft the right guy.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
The Patriots are foreign too general they go back to Tennessee.
In fact, hold let's hold on the Patriots for a second.
Talk Titans. The Titans get rid of Brian Callahan. I
think we all saw it coming. The timing of it
is a little, i don't know, not odd, but probably
should have happened after the Houston game. Then they win
the Arizona game, but then they look lousy in Las Vegas.
(09:49):
What are your thoughts about Brian Callahan being fired and
where do you think Tennessee goes from here? Considering their
former coach, who they should have kept as their current
coach is coming to town coaching a different time this weekend.
We'll get that a little bit. But your thoughts on
Tennessee making a move a Brian Callahan.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
We all know it was coming. You mentioned it should
have been after the Texans game. Everybody thought it would be.
They got beat twenty six to nothing. People think that
Amy Adams drunk just calling all these shots that she's
pulling strings and watching the team every day. I even
saw one that said she needs to be around more. No,
(10:25):
she's not calling all those shots now. She's the one
that fired John Robinson in December in twenty twenty two
as general manager. Nobody people still don't understand that one.
But she hires people, she listens to them, and they
wanted and I'm talking about Chad Brinker, who's the big boss,
and general manager Mike mcgonn's they thought it was time
(10:47):
to do it with Callahan and she said, okay, do it,
and everybody blasted her for doing the exact same thing
they had recommended doing. I'll tell you this about the
next coach is going to be an offense oriented coach.
It's going to be someone that can do the best
job they think with cam Ward who has not shown
(11:08):
much improvements birds but not any kind of consistent improvement,
and a lot of it is the bad talent they've
put around him. And so I think it'll be an
offensive oriented coach with a lot of experience as a
play caller, could be a former head coach. But it's
not going to be a defensive coordinator. A guy like
Clint could be at Cliff Kingsbury. I threw out there.
(11:32):
John Gruden is dying to come back and coach, and
he loves the state of Tennessee. And they got a
new stadium. They got to sell suites and club seats
and all that for twenty twenty seven. People better be
fired up and next year and see some progress. But
I'm guessing Breaker came from the years with the Packers
and the guys he came from years with the Chiefs,
(11:55):
and they'll have somebody they worked with that they'll want.
And Brinker, it's a weird final say not the GM
and not the head coach. So all I know is
it'll be somebody with a background of an offensive quarter
maybe Mike McCarthy. He still wants to coach, and he's
got a good record at Green Bay, the good record
at Dallas.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
So let me get this straight. If I'm Bergonzi and
I want to pick up a guy off the streets,
say try out a guy. We just need a tight end.
I got to run it by Brinker before I sign him.
I told you this is gonna go now.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Not not somebody, no, not all things like that. Big decisions.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Okay, all right, we'll see how that goes. Johnny, what
did you want to ask about the Patriots while I
throw up?
Speaker 5 (12:35):
Okay, because the Patriots being at foreign too with Mike Vrabel,
they're now leading the AFC East, so Mark has started
to throw up at this point, what are your thoughts
general about continuing with they bring in Vrabel. They now
have got the quarterback in Drake May, even though there
were gms that were convinced Drake May couldn't play e
(12:56):
Ryan Pols, but May has been outstanding. The Patriots can't
say they haven't beaten anybody that beat the Pills on
a Sunday night in Buffalo?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Can the Patriots maintain this general?
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Are they?
Speaker 5 (13:08):
Maybe not Brady years dangerous, but how dangerous are the
Patriots with Mike Vrabel at the helm?
Speaker 3 (13:15):
I think they are as Vrabel was when he was
with the Titans. They were capable of beating anybody anytime,
beating Baltimore in Baltimore in the playoffs. You know, not
a lot of teams have done that that were Kansas City.
And that's the way it is there. Because Mike is
(13:35):
coming back this weekend, and because the fans are so
down on the Titans, frustrated, angry. They're gonna cheer him
like if Vince Lombardi had come back to lambeau Field
and people are gonna forget. Oh yeah, everybody wanted him
fired because he had two bad years in a row,
and there weren't a lot of arguments when they fired him,
(13:56):
like oh my goodness, what in the world you're doing.
But now it's like Mike one every single year and
that's not the case. And he's gonna go in there
and he's gonna beat him. And I don't think I
don't think he was a bitter guy when he was fired.
He'd been six years. Now it's worked out great for him,
tremendous for him. And I don't think they're good enough
(14:19):
to stay at a Buffalo. They've got the tidebreaker now
with one more game to be played in New England,
but I think Buffalo is still the team to beat.
But it's gonna be a lot of fun for the
fans on Sunday. Cheering for the opposing coach.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Weird, very weird stuff indeed for the Tennessee Titans organization. Okay,
the other AFC South foes have big games and by
big games, I mean we need them to lose. So
the Colts are at the Chargers, who are four and two,
and I guess slight favorites if I follow the dark Arts,
as Sean Pendergass would say, but who cares about that.
It's close enough to be a pick them. So Chargers
(14:55):
Colts give me some hope. I hate seeing the Chargers win,
but I hate seeing the Colts to win a lot more.
So let's have the Chargers pull off the victory.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
What do you think Texan's need for the Colts to lose?
And I keep saying out they've scored more points than
anytime any Colts team in history up to this point,
including all those years with Peyton Manning. Well, if you
look at some of the teams they played, they play
a dog schedule. Now it's getting a little tougher, and
the Chargers need to win that game. If the Colts
(15:27):
do indeed win, as they escaped with the victory over
the Broncos earlier in the season when a penalty gave
them another chance at a field goal and they converted
it and won. So I'll be a lot more respectful
of Indianapolis if they beat the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
What about the Jags and the Rams though they're going
to play in London, So what do you think of
this one?
Speaker 3 (15:50):
I'm still not high on the Jaguars. Watch them get
beat by Seattle at home. But something to keep in mind.
What was the year? Is it two or three years ago?
They started like a house on fire and they were
like seven and one and everybody said they're going to
Super Bowl and then they just went straight down the toilet.
There's always teams that start fast and they come back
(16:13):
to the to the pack. And I just have not
been impressed with the Jaguars since they beat the Texans,
and the Texans just gave it to them with those
turnovers late in the game. So the Rams are missing
Hookinaku and so much of that offense goes through him,
and it wouldn't surprise me if they lost. Texans. Of course,
(16:34):
lost to both of them by by five and seven points,
and don't you know they'd like to have those back.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
Okay, I'm gonna ask my question I ask every week,
and I feel like it's that much more apropos to
ask this question because I don't know that there is
a definitive answer for a definitive team there is you
think there is?
Speaker 2 (16:56):
There is? Who is or what is the best.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Team in the league right now?
Speaker 5 (17:03):
General, you get to go first, what is the best
team in the NFL?
Speaker 3 (17:08):
I would go with the Buccaneers because there's no situation.
It's too big for them to pull out games at
the end with Baker Mayfield and he's done it without
Mike Evans, who got hurt here He's supposed to come
back Sunday. They're missing they've been missing two offensive tackles
at times, three offensive lineman. They have made Chris good
(17:32):
when they've got their leading rusher, Bucky Irvin, he's been out.
All these guys are coming back and every time they
pull out another victory. And by the way, their loss
was a tipped ends on interception at the end, they
believe they're going to win now. After watching Kansas City,
I might pick Kansas City, but I've never seen a
(17:53):
season where we couldn't say, well, the best team's Kansas
City are The best team is New England. But this
is one It's almost like you could just throw a
dart pick out who's going to be the champion. But
I'm right now Buccaneers with MVP Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
I like them. They've been pulling out close games and
like them. I mean, I didn't like what they did here,
but you know, I respect Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles.
I like him, so good for them anyway. I'd love
to see them in the Super Bowl. Anyway, sir, you
got to answer. It's the Red Menace, the Kansas City Chiefs. Okay,
they are the team. I don't care what the record is.
Those were all close losses anyway, and now they get
(18:30):
all their receivers, they get Worthy and Rice is coming back,
and good night everybody. It's their league and you have
to stick a stake in their heart, in their building,
because it looks like it's going to go that way.
They're going to start to emerge here. Just you wait,
as they say in Hamilton, and I don't like it
one little bit. We're gonna be there in December, and
I hope we're on the top of our game. The
(18:51):
Texans are. When they take on the Chiefs at Arrowhead,
I knew you were.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Going to go there. I knew it. They're three and
three right now.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
They decimated the Lion.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
I mean, the hammer is impressive. They hammered the Lions
and the Lions are decimated. I should have said, but
that was impressive.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
It was.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
It still was impressive.
Speaker 5 (19:08):
You played teams in front of you, and they made
the Lions in the second half in particular, look like
a JV team.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
I mean, they're three straight home game thing you pointed
that out. They have the Raiders and Commanders next. Then
they go to Buffalo. We'll see what Buffalo is at
that point. Yeah, what's wrong with Buffalo?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
General?
Speaker 5 (19:21):
What do you think the bills of lostoon or role?
They loose to the Patriots at home, didn't look good
doing it. Then they went to Atlanta, went up early,
and then it all went to hell for them, really
really quickly.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
In your mind, what's going on with Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
I'm shocked at what's happened to Buffalo. My two super
Bowl teams, Detroit and Buffalo. I still feel good about him.
The only Ray's not winning against Chase the Super Bowl
losers don't go back to the Super Bowl, and Josh
Allen is not Superman. They're not running the ball like
they did, and they're struggling to stop the run. Other
than that, they're okay.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Other than that, they're fine to see here. Yeah, they're fine.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
There was a hot take this morning on the Hot
Take Shows that the Jets would go winless. I don't
think they're gonna go winless, but I'm and we talked
about this a little bit on Monday. I believe general,
but I'm a little worried about Aaron up there. I
want to see ag do well. They have the Panthers
this week. You give them a glimmer of hope.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Yeah, I'd give them a glimmer of ope. Phil says,
boy he's gonna cut it loose. He's been too conservative.
That means he's gonna start running more. Panthers are a
big surprise at three and three. All of a sudden,
they got a great running game with Rico Daddle, who
played because Cheeba Hubbard was hurt. Now Hubbard's ready to
come back. It's gonna be interesting to see how they
(20:43):
how they play those two guys. But they want to run,
and boy Young's done a great job living leading them
to victories in the last two games. So I think
they'll win, but I don't think they're gonna go winless.
To dumbest, dumbest prediction I've seen this year was not
that one, even though I disagree with it. Was Mike Tannenbob,
(21:06):
a former general manager, on Get Up on ESPN right
before the season, picking the Titans to win the AFC South.
And then we know why he's you know why, he's
a former general manager. But and I remember when he
said it, and everybody on the show that day, they
didn't say anything. They just gave him all of these
incredulous looks like did I just hear you say what
(21:29):
you said? And he went on and on about tam
Ward was going to be great rookie of the year. Boy,
he's going to hear about that as the season progresses.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Are the Steelers maybe the best team in the league
right now? You never know, right Aaron Rodgers, all right,
not the best in the league. But how much of
a threat is this team to bring the Steelers back
to a Super Bowl participation trophy at the very least.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
No, I don't think so at all. I watched them
play a game, and Aaron Rodgers is really doing a
really small By the way, Arthur Smith, their offensive coordinator,
could be the head coach in Tennessee because he spent
so many years there and he failed to Atlanta because
he didn't have a quarterback. But he and Rodgers have
done a really good job together. Rodgers involved in no controversy.
(22:16):
He's not seeing these stupid things. He's not going on
Pat McAfee's show and creating controversy every single week. But
I just don't see them when it's in January and
in the snow and everything, that they can beat Buffalo
or Kansas City, and my dark carse to get in
the playoffs is still Baltimore. I don't look like Mike
(22:37):
Tann and Bob. But Jackson's coming back after the buying.
When he was there, they were first or second in
points scored. And they're supposed to get a couple of
or three injured players back on defense, and so it
wouldn't surprise me if they didn't make a run at
the Steelers to win that division.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
You know, everyone talks about the Steelers trading for a
J Brown or something like that. What about help, what
about getting that running game cranked up even more?
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Walter Smith wants to run it. That's his mo. He
had Derrick Henry all those years and their running game
is okay, but that's what he wants to do. First
and that would help Rogers immensely. So, yeah, if they
if the Jets trade Brece Hall, you think they would
be one of the teams in the running and running
backs if you stumble on to Rego Daddle and players
(23:28):
like that. So they got a good personnel department. It
wouldn't surprise me at all. I hadn't thought about that
if they don't had a running back for when the
weather gets bad.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
Okay, speaking of adding a running back, Mark just mentioned
the name Brees Hall. There's been some internet rumors or
I don't know, speculation or noise, Yeah, about Bryce Brees
Hall and the Texans, the Texas making a move for
Brees Salt general.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
How would you feel about that one.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
No, I don't think they'd do it. I don't see
him Nick Seio making a deal in early no November
less he wanted to give up point of his six
round pigs and Hall's only twenty four. You know, Aaron
Glenn doesn't want to give up a twenty four year
old running back who can run and catch. So I
don't think they're going to trade him. I think that's
(24:13):
all about the media. They look around the league. Well,
Joe Mixon's not playing and even though the running game's improved,
And if you did bring in Bresaw, I'd be all
four because that's who I wanted the Texans to draft
because I'd watched him at Iowa State. But I just
don't see him doing it. I think you'd take a
third round pick to get Brisaw.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Well if the Texans run the ball well against the Seahawks,
and the Seahawks are good against the run. We just
talked about Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's one loss is to Seattle at
home at home, so Seattle can be a very pressive
impressive team can be. I know they lost at home
a couple of times, but it's close games that they
lost and everything, and that happens to every team in
the league, so certainly this year. So we'll see how
(24:55):
that shapes up running back wise, But generally you're pretty
good with Nick Chubb and wood he marks right now.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Now at this point, right they are.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
You got to think at some point those both are
one of them's gonna get hurt. Those Macs just don't
play seventeen, don't you dare anymore? Nick Chubb runs so hard,
you know, would they go with Dariganwali? I love British Brooks.
They gave him a sniff last game and boy he produced.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
He certainly did.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
We had him on the show and he was great
yesterday and that'll be in replay mode tomorrow late night probably.
It's also on Spotify on the THAA that's Texans All
Access podcast. You can catch it on the Odyssey app
or anywhere where you get podcasts. General, thanks so much
for joining us.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
We appreciate it, yeays, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
As always, all right, coming up Who's Better? We've got
good ones here, quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, who the Texans
are facing this week, and teams on the Texans schedule
and other things all coming up here on Texans Radio.
Here we are in the hot day Texans Radio studio
as we roll on on the pro. Mark Vandermere and
(26:01):
John Harris with you and Johnny, Are you ready to
play Who's Better?
Speaker 5 (26:05):
Yes, you almost don't have to say, you just have
to say, we're doing it, and you don't even have
to ask me.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
I'm ready, You're ready? Who's better?
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Sam Darnold or Ryan Fitzpatrick pick your journeyman quarterback. Johnny
Fits he played for a thousand teams. Put up a
lot of numbers through some interceptions. Now ran with the
ball a bunch I'll give you if you want some
data here to back up a point or two fit
Sea's best year. Let's see twenty thirty one touchdown passes
(26:37):
with the Jets, but fifteen picks. So yes, you know,
two to one ratio. But man, when you throw thirty one,
you hope you're not throwing fifteen picks. And he didn't
quite get to four thousand yards that year, sacked only
nineteen times. Not bad at all with that many dropbacks.
But that was his best season statistically. You know. Obviously
with the Texans he had a nine and seven here
in twenty fourteen. I'm not going to go through all
(26:58):
of his stats because he played for a bunch of years.
Two thousand and five Saint Louis. We talked about this
the other day when he came off the bench to
beat the Texans with a three hundred yard performance. That
was amazing in overtime. Had those years with the Dolphins,
but Donald Jets Carolina. We know the rest of the story.
The Vikings last year, outstanding campaign for Donald, last year
(27:19):
at Minnesota, in a great start this year. In fact,
last year, threw thirty five touchdowns and twelve interceptions four thousand,
three hundred yards.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
I'm gonna go with Sam Darnold.
Speaker 5 (27:29):
Okay to me, Fitzi at even the last three four
to five years of his career, I thought he was
better than he was the first how many every.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Years of his career, he just it felt like Fitzi.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
Got better and better and better every year. And I
remember the COVID year they went to Las Vegas. Yeah,
they went to Las Vegas and they're down, they don't
have a lot of time left, and Fitzy throws a
go ball down the left sideline and as he's doing it,
he's getting face masked, like his face is being earned
(28:00):
left and he's throwing the ball to amazing play and
he just drops a dime on the sidelines for a completion.
They go on and win that game, and I just
remember thinking, man, he's gotten I know he's gonna retire soon,
but it's like he got better and better and better.
He beat the Patriots that one year, twenty nineteen, he
beat the Patriots at the end when they weren't very good.
I still think Darnald just all the tools are just
(28:25):
a little bit better, and I start thinking, Okay, which
guy scares me the most? The most fits he at
the end of the game would scare me. But I
think Sam does even more because I remember that twenty
eighteen game.
Speaker 4 (28:37):
He's a rookie, right, and he's making.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
Plays against what we thought at the time was a
really good defense. And I'm like, this guy, this young
dude is gonna beat us. And he really had a
great rookie year, but he's gonna beat us. You needed
a late TD to hop right to win that game,
that's right. And then at that point when they were
down and now it was about throwing it. We could
put all our pass rushers out there and they just
they couldn't block it for him. But I think Donald
(29:02):
has gotten better and better every year, kind of following
it as Fitz he did.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
He's getting better and better every year.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Let me phrase it like this, has FITZI ever had
as good a situation as Donald did last year at
Minnesota or maybe even this year at Seattle.
Speaker 5 (29:15):
No, okay, I think Donald's last year Minnesota, this year
in Seattle. I mean, look, you starting justin Jefferson, Jordan Adison, TJ.
Hockinson with Kevin O'Connell, Colnoll's.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
Plays this year.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
He's got Clint Kobi at Conna, plays with Cooper Cup
and the leading receiver in E League JSN, Jack Smith
and Jigg on his side, like he's he's finally had
some weapons he can throw to. And I think that's helped.
But over the years fifty through to Brandon Marshall, you know, FITZI,
through to some guys, uh, you know, throughout his years
in the NFL as well, So you can't look past that.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
But that said, I'm gonna go say, I'm gonna go
Sam Donald.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Okay, we'll go here with the scariest. Okay, who's better
in terms of scariest scariest team remaining on the Texans schedule?
And you cannot use the Kansas City Chiefs because that
would be mine obviously at Arrowhead and they're playing better
right now. But you have Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Jacksonville,
(30:09):
the Colts, twice Buffalo coming up. Who am I missing
the Chargers on the road? You tell me what's the
scariest team?
Speaker 6 (30:15):
Is this?
Speaker 4 (30:16):
It?
Speaker 1 (30:16):
Is this the scariest team? Or is it Denver? What
do you think here?
Speaker 6 (30:19):
Well?
Speaker 5 (30:19):
I think Seattle even though Seattle's under feet down the
road this year, I think Seattle at home this week
is gonna be really, really tough just to make that trip.
And when you don't make that trip often, it can
be it can be difficult. Now, Tampa Bay flew from
Tampa Bay and beat Seattle up in Seattle. It was
a it was a battle. Baker made some plays down
a stretch, and it was it was a tremendous game.
(30:40):
I think Seattle's definitely up there. And I always feel
like there's such intrigue with NFC teams because you don't
see him that often. But I hate to say it
this way, but the team that probably has me worriest,
that has me the most worried is the Horseshoe.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Really, Yeah, wait a minute, are you coming around to
them now?
Speaker 2 (31:01):
That so much?
Speaker 4 (31:01):
I'm coming around to that.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
As much as it is, the reality of the situation
is they're pretty damn good.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
They're they're they look.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
I know, they've beaten a bunch of Patsy's, they really
haven't beaten a ton of teams with good records other
than Denver. But watching them really for the first time
this this past week on Red Zone every time he
turned it on, it was like, dang, there's another there's
another string of completions that Jalen Warren, Josh Downs and
(31:31):
Michael Pittman.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
J Dang, but they gave up twenty seven for the Cardinals.
Speaker 5 (31:34):
No, that's right, No, that's right. I just think that
offense is going to get better and better. O. By
the way, Jonathan Taylor, this just in still pretty damn good.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
Yeah, that's a problem.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
So I'm I'm maybe it's the Colts the other teams.
I think Buffalo is gonna do some things between now
and when we play them, whether it's make a trade,
realize James Cook plays for them, give him twenty to
twenty five touches a game, at least five to seven
more than he's getting. So I think Buffalo will be
pretty scary by the time we see him. But as
of right now, Buffalo looks like kind of the rest
(32:08):
of the run of teams. San Francisco I think has
got too many injuries. I think Denver is one side
of the ball. I think the Jaguars we sell the Jaguars.
If we play clean game against the Jaguars, we should
win that game at home. The Titans know, Cardinals, Raiders
know the Chiefs would be my ultimate answer to yours
as well. I just think the Colts and I'm not
going by the record. I'm just going by offensively what
(32:30):
I've seen from them. It's pretty aren't scary?
Speaker 1 (32:33):
Yeah, They're all really scary to me. I don't care
what their record is. It's the horseshoe, it's the nemesiss
and you know how I feel about that. We don't
have to go through that again, all right, who's better
better chance to help us out in the AFC South?
So the Rams against the Jags in London or the
Clippers against I wrote down Lac lacin the Chargers against
(32:57):
the Colts in la.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Well, I think Pukku's status is gonna be big in
this because he has been such the driver of that offense.
If he is not one hundred percent, it's gonna be
tough for the Rams, I think. To put a number
on the Jacks, I still think they could win. I
just think it's gonna be kind of a grind, grind
me gritty. But I think the Chargers, you know, when
(33:20):
you win a game like they did against Miami, looks
like they're you know, looks like they got the thing
under control. The Miami comes from behind, scores on other minute,
you're like, oh my god, we just lost these guys.
And then Herbert makes it play loud, McConkie makes it
play camera.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Dicker hits a.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Field goal, and then you feel like, man, we could
beat anybody.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
So I think going back home, not that, not that
the not the Sofi stadium gives them this huge home
field advantage. But they're wearing their they're wearing their yellows. Gosh,
they're wearing their Savannah banana yellows.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
Why are they wearing those things, Johnny? Those are awful.
You have the best, beautiful league and you're wearing those
utterly yellows.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
They're yellow.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
It's awful.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
Yeah, I can't.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
You got powder blues. You could go retro Dan Fouts
era if you want, which is not all the way retro,
which is what it is.
Speaker 4 (34:08):
It's not intimidating, man, it's not.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
I'm worried about this.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
You can't wear those yellows and go out and be
dominant against the team we need you to beat.
Speaker 5 (34:17):
That's right, But I still feel like the Chargers probably
had the better chance here. Okay, just given the fact
that they're they're not one hundred percent, but they're not
without their top offensive weapon. Now, Quentin Johnson may or
may not play, but as long as he's got lab
Ofcackie keenan Allen, he you know, Justin Herbert is gonna
be just fine.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
So I'm gonna say Chargers.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
Beat the Colts out in LA.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
Okay, let's go with another who's better here?
Speaker 2 (34:42):
Who's better?
Speaker 1 (34:46):
Better team with question marks? Currently? If you were doing
a stock up stock down? These two teams have stocked
down currently according to so many. But better team with
question marks the four and two Philadelphia Eagles or the
four in two Buffalo Though Bills.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Man, it was better.
Speaker 5 (35:06):
I thought about this one a lot, because, you know,
three weeks ago when I asked the question, who's the
best team in the league, and all like, you can't
say the Bills and Eagles, can't say the Bills and Eagles.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
And now you look at it and go, what the
hell's wrong with these teams? And sometimes it's not a
physical thing.
Speaker 5 (35:21):
Sometimes it's just you know, out of sync, out of rhythm,
and you just can't get back on track. And you know,
everybody's trying hard, but it's just not coming together, and
then a mistake happens and you're like, Map, yeah, we
should have saw that coming, and then you end up
losing a couple of games in a row as both
of them have. I feel like it's the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
Because both of them can run the ball pretty well.
Speaker 5 (35:48):
But I just feel like Josh has to put the
cape on too much for Buffalo's offense, and maybe that
ends up being the problem.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
But Barkley's not running the ball well this year. Yeah,
and they with Barkley blame it on him. I think
it's a community effort here of not running the ball well.
Speaker 5 (36:03):
I think where it's mysterious to me, Marcus the fact
that I could see it with the Eagles because it's
a new offensive coordinator and we know what that means.
We've seen that here. You know it can be the
best offensive coordinator. Kempatula could be the best offensive coordinator
the NFL has ever seen. But it's the first year
of him calling plays in the first year with this offense,
so it takes a little bit. Mysterious to me is
(36:24):
the Bills, because it's all the same guys and there
may be in lines of the problem that they haven't
gone on gotten a guy, a playmaker to replace Stefon Diggs.
So I'm gonna go with the Eagles because I think
eventually they'll get back to Saquan running the football, you know,
a Jane DeVante. Are just gonna have to deal with it,
(36:45):
and maybe they will, maybe they won't, but they're just
gonna have to deal with it because that team has
to get back to playing physical football.
Speaker 4 (36:51):
The offensive line hasn't played at its top level yet.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
But remember last year two and two last year going
into the week five by right Week five by that
came out of that and then went on a roll.
And the only game they ended up losing during that
time frame was to Washington when Jalen Hurts went out
of the game with a concussion and Canny Pikett to
come in and he almost won a game for them.
So I think Philly's got a better bounce back situation
(37:15):
in them. Josh needs some help. He can't be put
onto Cape every single week anymore. That can't happen in Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Okay, final one here, although we might have a bonus
who's better better head coaching job the Titans currently available
and soon to be available maybe the Dolphins or maybe
even the Cardinals if they don't get it right, that
(37:42):
could be available as well. So what's the best coaching
job among the three? Now you have cam Ward in Nashville?
Speaker 4 (37:49):
Is he the guy?
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Do you believe in him? That kind of thing weighs
in heavily when you consider working for the Tennessee Titans.
And then you look at structure and who's behind me
and who's not? How does the building work? We were
talking about this with John McLain in the last segment. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (38:04):
Absolutely, And I think with Miami you wonder about ownership.
You know, Steven Ross and all the things that have
gone on. You know, Chris Greer remains in the GM.
You know, Mike McDaniel looks like the spirit has just
left him. It feels like, but do you believe in Tua?
That's the second question. Then you look at Arizona? Do
(38:24):
you believe in Kyler Murray? And you've got money And
I know that Twas got still years left in his contract.
I don't know what Kyler's contract got a real more
after this. Kyler does had pretty big dollars. I'm sure
that's a way out. It's not like Deshaun Watson or something.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Right.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
If you believe in Murray, great, If you don't, you
got to get out of it. It's gonna be painful,
but it's possible.
Speaker 5 (38:44):
What tennessee. The problem is you do have the quarterback.
I do think cam Wart's gonna get better and better.
He's got playma, playmaking ability, He's got those attributes you
want to see. But Mark, it is such a dearth
of talent there. There's Jeffrey Simmons and there's cam Ward.
Everybody else is just, I mean, at best average, at best,
(39:06):
maybe Skeroonsky at guard is gonna end up being a
player down the road, maybe Latham, but there's just nothing
else to go with those two guys. And I do
from a standpoint of being a GM or being a
head coach, I can build it. And I'm in a
new stadium, you know I can build it. I can
get some free agents. It's Nashville, all that kind of stuff.
I'm excited about all that. Really, you, in all honesty,
(39:29):
you know you could you get the opportunity to throw
as much pain on a canvas, not trade Jeffers Simmons,
build with cam Ward.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
You could turn that thing around.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
In a hurry.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
Let's just say, in a hurry. But I think you
could turn it around a little bit more so than
you could Miami. In Arizona, where I feel like you're
kind of stuck in the mediocre realm and you really
need this kickstart to get out of it.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
I don't think you can. I think Tennessee you could.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
Now you might have to move Simmons, get some picks
back for him, you know, kind of the not not
Herscha Walker trade, but kind of a herschel Walker trade
type thing, and just start building young, Build young, get
a bunch of young dudes in there, get everybody excited
about the young guys can do. Two three years down
the road, you got something. Okay, here's joy I cannot
(40:13):
be almost say that's the Titans. No, I agree, because
they have Cam Warren. I think that's pretty obvious.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
Among the other two, it gets a lot more difficult
to get your quarterback situation and how tight in you are.
All Right, here's your bonus. Who's better? It's a quakie
who's better? College football? Opening wise? Okay, so it's what's better?
Speaker 2 (40:32):
I get it. But we just have some fun here,
and i'd.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Like the song so I'm not going to include Penn
State because I think that's the best one on the board,
although I could be wrong. Is that the best one
on the board? By the way, is Arkansas better than
Penn State? In your mind? It's in the SEC. You
got a lot of money there with the Chicken people, and.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
You sometimes have some expectations that are a little out
of control at Arkansas. But I mean, that's a tough
nut to correct. But then again, Penn State, that's the
big ten. You still got to know how a state.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Michigan problem there, I mean, so problem for sure. But
you have Happy Valley of the Lion money. They have money.
Speaker 5 (41:08):
They have money, you know, That's that's the in Arkansas's
got money too, That's the Money's not the issue at
those at those two places.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
But you have to pick right now, like you have
to pick under pressure. You're a head coach in canadaate Arkansas,
Penn State, which one go? I don't want to go
to Penn State, all right? So I like Arkansas.
Speaker 5 (41:27):
I've always liked Arkansas to a degree, and I feel
like the SEC is tough. But I've got access to Texas, Louisiana, Georgia.
I got access to all of that, and my state,
Arkansas has some really good football players. I'm gonna take
Arkansas or Penn State.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
Okay, give me another one here, Virginia Tech or Oklahoma State.
Pick one right now.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Virginia Tech.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
Really Yeah, too much competition in the neck of the
woods where Oklahoma State resides.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
I just don't know what.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Oklahoma State like. Yeah, I don't know the right way staying.
It's like, what's the identity of Oklahoma State.
Speaker 4 (41:57):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
I feel like Oklahoma State. I feel like Oklahoma State.
I would have to do a lot of transfer portal
stuff and I don't.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
Really want to do that.
Speaker 5 (42:06):
I feel like Virginia Tech. I could dominate recruiting in
the seven five to seven. And if I could dominate
recruiting like Beamer used to do, I can get that
thing turned around.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
And then it's just a matter of getting my quarterback.
And I can go get my quarterback anywhere.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
Sounds good.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Facdoid's from this weekend's matchup. Well, it's Monday night, Texans
at Seattle coming up along with Houston Methodist Minutes. It's
Texans Radio final thoughts here tonight on the Seattle Seahawks
and some other things before we get to Houston Methodist Minutes.
A factoid or two from this game turnover margin, big stat.
As you all know now, the Seahawks have been giving
(42:40):
the ball away too much, but not through the air.
Three picks for Darnold, who, by the way, is third
in the league in passer rating, third in yards, third
in completion percentage. He's having a good year, no doubt.
But they have five fumbles as a team and that
is not good. It's in the bottom third of the
league and they're minus in the turnover margin apartment despite
(43:01):
having a four to two record. So we'll see how
that little tidbit of information plays out. Much more on
this tomorrow when we do our final preview, and Saturday
is going to be more like a Friday for the team,
but Friday is our regular Friday show.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
I'm not going to go through all that right now.
I will go through this.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
This is our final installment of Houston Methodist Minutes with
the concussion topic, and when you have one of the
best doctors in the world on the subject, doctor Kenneth Pedell,
good to get his thoughts.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Here's a quickie.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
Should you allow someone to go to sleep when they
have a concussion.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
Is that a wives tale? Is that true?
Speaker 1 (43:34):
What does the doctor have to say that is a
wives tale?
Speaker 6 (43:39):
Absolutely? What we recommend now, after observing someone for a
couple of hours, say three four hours, and you've not
seen any significant changes in any of their symptoms or behaviors,
let them sleep. Just feed them a little bit, make
sure they're well hydrated, and we really recommend a long
period of sleep. Sleep is when your brain recovers and
(44:01):
cleans up, so any injury to the brain, sleep is
a perfect way of helping that brain, treat that and
clean up any damage that was done during the brain
So waking them up, that's an old lives tale. We
do recommend you monitor them for a few hours before
they go to sleep to make sure there's no worstening
of symptoms. If you see worsening of symptoms headache, next stiffness,
(44:25):
slurred speech, vomiting two or more times unequal pupil sizes,
we do recommend being safe and caution and taking them
to the emergency room for a full evaluation.
Speaker 1 (44:37):
Doctor, what about monitoring long term effects over time? Do
you keep track of people who I'm sure people who
might think they have something wrong with them long term
might come in. But people who are just fine after
having a concussion or multiple concussions, do you want to
see them too to compare?
Speaker 2 (44:55):
How do you go about that sort of thing.
Speaker 6 (44:57):
In a typical singlenercussion recovery in a couple of days,
a couple of weeks, there's no need for long term
follow up, they'll be just fine. If someone's had multiple
concussions three four five in a short period of time
a couple of years, we do recommend some long term
(45:19):
follow up just to make sure they are recovery. A
single concussion does not have any significant effect down the
road for an individual. There's no diver to say that
one concussion is going to lead to mention later in life.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
All right, there's doctor Kenneth Padell of Houston Methodist on
the topic of concussions, the official healthcare provider of the
Houston Texans, Houston Methodist leading medicine. Thursday Night football coming
up and tomorrow full show with Damko Ryans and a
whole lot of other stuff. Ben McDaniels is going to
join US Wide Receivers coach. Can't wait for it all.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
Have a great night, Go Texans.
