Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello Texans, Welcome to the show. Mark VanderMeer, John Harris
with you. Let's go Texans and Jaguars Sunday, AFC South.
We go back into the Division. Just the third division
game this season for the Texans, obviously a loss in
Week three to overcome against the Jaguars. Everything feels different
right now in a variety of ways. And we'll get
(00:20):
to it all. And we'll start with the General, John McClain,
the Hall of Famer General. Good evening. Here we go
Texans Jags on Sunday. What do you think if.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
You're a Texans fan, it's got to be so frustrating
that every loss has been by one score, including the
Denver game with no time left on a field goal.
I look back, I've forgotten. I know you guys will
re remember this clearly. The Jacksonville game. They lose by
seven and Jacksonville, let's see, gets an interception at their
(00:55):
seventeen fumble at their ten interception that they're four all
in the fourth quarter. That's how closed they game. It's
gotta drive the coach is crazy to know how closed
they've come to winning the games that they've lost. But
that's it. They could have beaten the Jaguars first game.
(01:16):
Ordinarily they should win if CJ. Stroud were playing, and
he's not Davis Mills. Is I expect Davis and we've
seen him have three hundred yard games early in his career.
We'll play a whole lot better against the Jaguars than
he played against the Broncos.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Every time you guys say Jaguars, it makes me think
of what Woody Page called the Jaguars jack Wars and No.
Nineteen ninety six, he was running for the Denver Post
and he wrote a scathing article about this new franchise
called the Jaguards.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Oh my gosh. Yeah, and then they beat the Broncos.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
And then they beat the Broncos very nice, and so
we used to in Jacksonville. They started, you know how
we have here the Houston Sports Awards. Yeah, so they
were doing a Jacksonville Sports Awards and it was just
kind of a self ingrandizing sort of thing because it
was just Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Jaguars got a lot of it.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
So to give out the Jaguars Player of the Year
in nineteen ninety six, wood He Page from the Denver Post.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Showed up to give that war and everybody knew he
was Mark.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
It's pretty interesting find general to get that win with
Davis Mills at quarterback. What one thing are you absolutely
assured has to happen in that game.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
Especially offensively?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
But what one thing do you think has to happen
for them to be able to walk out of there
with a win? Other than or they got to score
more points? Understand that, but what one thing is it?
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Better? Red zone? Is it?
Speaker 3 (02:40):
They got to somehow shut out the Jaguars, as tough
as that might be. They got to score on special teams.
What one thing do you think has to happen for
them to walk out of there with a w?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Considering the Texans are the worst red zone team in
the NFL. They plummeted behind the Saints after that Broncos game,
and they're the only team that hasn't scored a touchdown
from the one or two yard line, I would say
they have to do better in the red zone, and
they have to if they get to the one or
(03:11):
the two, they need to finally score a touchdown. And
you know, defense played well enough to win the last game.
Special teams did great. You know game me Fairbaron, I
guess he kicked too much. And this new kicker's got
to be able to connect when he gets the opportunity,
because based on what we've seen, when you failed to
score touchdowns in the red zone, your kicker is going
(03:34):
to get a lot of chances. So maybe the kicker
here his agents said, hey, if you go there, you're
going to get a lot of chances to kick field
goals and it'll get a chance to tract attention from
other teams for when Fairbarn comes back.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
John Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
It's another visit with the fabio looking quarterback of the
Jacksonville Jaguars. And as we check in with him, you
have ever winning record good for them? Nine touchdowns, six
picks below sixty percent completion percentage, quarterback rating seventy nine
point seven. What do you think they think of Trevor
(04:10):
Lawrence right now in year five? Try to put it
all together.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Don't think he's led them to a winning record. And
they moved a game closer to the Colts, who got
hammered by the Steelers because Daniel Jones looked like Daniel
Jones and not like Peyton Manning for the first time
this season. And I believe Lawrence has not been Worth
(04:36):
the first overall pick. He has not been a generational
prospect as he was called from his freshman year at Clemson.
And you know some of it. He's got Brian Thomas Junior,
who's been a disappointment in his second season after being
so impressive as a rookie. You know, Travis Hunters now
(04:56):
in I are you know they make a trade for Jacoby.
I don't think that's gonna make a difference. They're gonna
have to have travesy ten who scored that first game,
have a good game rushing to take the pressure off
of Lawrence because if Lawrence has to throw the ball,
Will Anderson Jr. And Daniel Hunter will get after him.
(05:18):
And another thing they need. This doesn't get a lot
of attention because the defense is number one, but their
pass rushing has come from the ends. The tackles are
not getting to the quarterback the way they have the
last two years, and they need to get an inside
push to disrupt Lawrence and try to force them to
(05:42):
roll out, roll into Hunter and into Anderson. And I
don't I just don't think the Jaguars are that good.
But you know, Liam Cohens told them, guys, we win
this game you know, the Colt schedule gets tougher. We
got a chance to make a run and he have
to beat the Texans.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
That would be the first season sweep over the Texans
since twenty seventeen. But standing in the way is one
of Davis Mills general. What's your gut reaction to what
you think we'll see from Mills on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Just overall, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 3 (06:18):
And if you're Nick Keyley, how do you want to
go about maybe helping Davis Mills against the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
I think that Davis that passed, He threw Nico Collins
down the right sideline. No quarterback in the league could
have thrown that ball better. And when he did, I thought, wow,
Davis's going to have a good game, and he did not,
and with a week to prepare. You know, he's after
what he was put through his first two seasons on
(06:45):
the bad teams that he quarterback for, and at times
he looked really good and he's been a good soldier.
He signed contracts to stay as the backup. This is
why they pay him good money for a backup quarterback
is to come out, don't turn it over. But mainly
when you get a chance to cash in, cash in,
(07:08):
and when they if they get down to the one
or two yard line. You know, he's bigger than Stroud,
you know, call a sneak. The sneaks the week before
work perfectly. They didn't try it, and Seattle didn't try
it last week. Davis is a big guy. You can
roll a little bit and throw them the run if
he has to, although that's not what they want him
(07:30):
to do. So be smart with the ball, be more
accurate than he was against the Broncos, and don't turn
it over. And he's not going against Denver's defense, which
is the best pass rushing defense in the league. That's
why I think he's going to be better than he was,
And a lot of people that think they're definitely going
(07:52):
to lose might be surprised.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
General.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Last week, Nico Collins and Christian Kirk come back and
the Texans the week before had a three hundred plus
yard passing day with c. J. Stroud and no Nico
and no Christian. Not saying you don't want Nico and
Christian to play, but they have some decisions to make
as far as who to get the ball to in
certain situations. Now, if they're better on third down more opportunities.
(08:17):
I'm thinking specifically of nol though and Higgins too, because
good things seem to happen when Noel gets the ball
in his hands. By and large, Putt return last week
for instance, and obviously the week before with the big plays,
and certainly Higgins as well. But they've got some decisions
to make on how they get the ball around to
the different playmakers because they might have more than a
(08:38):
lot of people think here with those two rookies, and
Xavier Hutchinson has been no slouch, So your thoughts on
how to get the ball spread around nicely get it
to the different playmakers.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
In Dalton Schultz is playing well and what he marks
is a passing target. Now, let's be honest. The forty
nine Ers defense was injury decimated, as was the Ravens
was not. Even though Patrick's Tan was out, they he
didn't affect the pass rush. And I'd like to see
Jalen No touch the ball five times a game and
(09:10):
see what he could do. Whether you know, if you're
if you're a dangerous return guy. When he is as
he is, you'll see those teams either punting to the
side or the corner make him move to one side
of the field get great hang time because he's obviously
a playmaker, but I'd want to use him as receiver
(09:33):
as well. They didn't get to throw the ball as
much against Denver as they did against the forty nine ers,
which was their best passing game of the season. The
balance was amazing with those first two guys out, but
Kristian Kirkat's big plays in the game, so did Niko,
and they looked for Nico on third down. Opponents know
(09:53):
they're going to be looking for him, and when he's
getting all the attention, the other guys have to step up.
And Xavier udsinsoneas you know he's been. He's been a
terrific as a receiver this year, and they have a
lot of options, and I just think Noel is their
best guy other than College for big plays, so you've
(10:14):
got to give him the opportunities.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
General, typically, the trade deadline to me is a lot
of hype and then the popcorn part. This year, expecting nothing,
we get a massive trade deadline moves plural, one of
them being the team that the Jaguars and Texans are
both chasing, and that's Indneapolis Colts, trading two first rounders
(10:38):
and Adni Mitchell, who was a high second round pick
for Sauce Gardener. Your gut reaction is seeing that move
by the Colts of obtaining Sauce Gardener that.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
The Colts overpaid a cornerback is not going to be
the difference in putting a team into Super Bowl, especially
if Daniel Jones plays did against the Steelers. Gardner didn't
play well last season. He's playing better this season, ad Mitchell,
this is a great deal for him. He need to
get out of Indy. Ever since he dropped that ball
(11:12):
short of the goal line early of the year that
cost him their first defeat, he's been persona on gradis.
So this is a great deal for him to go
up there and get a new lease on his football life.
And Gardner, you know, he's a really good player. He
was considered better than Derek Stingley is a rookie because
(11:36):
Stingley missed what eight or nine games with a hamstring injury.
But now Stingley is considered to be better than Gardner,
second best corner in the league to patrick's Orten, the
defensive player of the Year last year. But they made
that move, and more power to him and maybe Gardner
(11:58):
will play great, and I like what the Jets did
because you're not going anywhere with Gardner and with Williams,
and so why not go ahead and build for the
next two drafts.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
General, we still have a pretty hotly contested race for
the top seed in the AFC, and the Colts have
a tie for the top spot with the Broncos, but
they have the edge with the tiebreaker because they beat
them in Week two. They also have to go play
the Chiefs when they get back from the bye week
a week from Sunday. Thoughts on who wins that AFC
(12:30):
ultimately that number one seed, I should say not the
AFC championship necessarily, but just heading into the postseason. What
are you thinking here with that? As the Chiefs are
on a buy right now five and four, having just
lost to the Bills.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Well, I'm thinking what I thought before the season. Buffalo's
going to the Super Bowl. We're gonna win the AFC. Now,
the great story is if Mike Rabel and the Patriots
go down to Tampa and win this weekend, that would
be a huge victory for them. Their biggest victory was
at Buffalo, and that's the only tough game I don't
(13:06):
think they've had Their schedule has been remarkably easy. But
they did win there, and they got a champ to
sweep them when they play at Jilye Stadium. But the
Buccaneers are good, Baker Mayfield is good. They're coming off
there bye week, and if they win it, that'll give
Rabel inside track to being coach of the Year. Somebody said,
(13:26):
what about Shane Stikan. Yeah, he's done a great job.
They won eight games last year. What Patriots win for
and so Kansas City after watching him against Buffalo, they
always lose to Buffalo regular season. They beat Buffalo in
the playoffs, So the Bills better. I hope they don't
play them in the playoffs, but I'm sticking with the Bills.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Yeah, Bills.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
They man that win against Kansas City. Neither one of
them were really impressive. But when you look up and
you go, Chiefs are five and four. Okay, well maybe
so if the Chiefs remain kind of on that ledge.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
If you will, general, who do you.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Give a better shot of winning the AFC West, The
Broncos or the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Oh, the Broncos because of their defense, because bow Knicks
is making great plays in the fourth quarter. You know,
that's stat of them being unbeaten when they trail going
into the fourth quarter with a second year quarterback is amazing.
And it really has hurt the Chargers that they've lost
both tackles. When John when Alt came back, they were
(14:36):
a different offense. Now he's done again, too bad, and
so they've lost both tackles. They're not the same team
without him. Jim Arball is a great coach. They'll be
in the running. Justin Herbert is playing very, very well.
But I would not put them ahead of the Broncos
(14:57):
because the Broncos have that great pass rush and when
you got the best pass rush in the NFL, that
covers up a lot of heels. Well.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
We talked about how that Sauce Gardner trade affects the
Indianapolis Colts, but the Jets were really doing a lot
of business at the deadline and now have twenty seven
picks in the next I mean it's a lot. Okay,
they got a lot. They got a lot of picks general.
So I guess Aaron Glenn bought himself a situation. He's
not the GM, but it's a situation bought where he
(15:29):
can wipe this year clean and say we're starting over
next year. It's almost like a red shirt coaching year
for Aaron Glenn. As it turns out, what do you
think of their situation moving forward?
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Two ones and two twos In this upcoming draft, they
need a quarterback. It's going to be a good year
for quarterbacks. A lot of possibilities. People are making judgments
based on the way these quarterbacks are playing during the season,
and you guys know, historically they'd pay very little attention
to what happened during the season. It's all about shorts
(16:03):
and T shirts, wants. The Senior Bowl workouts were over,
which is important in the combine, the Pro day, the
private workout. A guy like Anthony Richardson can come out
of nowhere and impress the heck out of everybody, and
he gets overdrafted. I don't know that may scare people
away from a guy that started one season, but he
(16:24):
was superman at the Combine, and so the Jets have
no excuse not to get their quarterback. The Giants have
their quarterback and the Jets need theirs. And Aaron Glenn,
I know you guys like him a lot. He cannot
say when he gets fired that he wasn't able to
(16:45):
build a team in his image. But it got to
get the quarterback, and they weren't doing anything with the
guys they have right now, so why not go ahead
and do it. I thought the Titans made a big
mistake that they should have traded Jeffrey as they should
have traded other players. They're not going anywhere. By the
time they're respectable, maybe three years from now, Simmons will
(17:07):
be like thirty two or thirty three.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
If Darren Mugie, the GM of the Jets, plays this
right with all those first round picks, he will extend
the number of first round draft picks from he's got
three to twenty twenty seven. Wow, extend that into twenty
twenty eight, twenty twenty nine, kind of like Nick did
with the Browns deal with DeShawn Man. They do that
and they hit on picks. It could get kind of
(17:31):
sexy in New York. But they got to hit in
the quarterback. They definitely have got to get that right.
This one's for both of you. Which division is better,
the AFC West or the NFC West.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
General NFC West has one bad team that just beat
the hell out of the Cowboys with a backup quarterback right,
and the way Jacoby Brizette has been playing, and the
way the Cardinals definitely navigated this controversy by putting Kyler
Murray on out are even though last week they said
he was ready to come back. You know, maybe got
(18:05):
reinjured in his sleep, but that is taking the pressure
off them. And the thing I would worry about Brazette.
We've seen Jakobe play really well at times during his
career and then he runs out of gas. But you're
only as good as your worst team. And here's the
worst team. The thing about boy, if you look at
the I'm gonna say that NFC West is better because
(18:28):
I think the Rams are underrated super Bowl team. Matthew
Stafford's playing great. They got a good defensive line, they
got they have a balance between running and passing. Seattle,
with Clint Kubiak going over there and taking over the
play call and Sam Darnol's playing just like he did
last season with the Vikings. I think Seattle could help
(18:50):
Clint Kubiak become a head coach. And they're really good.
Their defense is good, and the thing is it's so weird.
They're great on the road for the second year in
a row, and they're not good at home.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Interesting, I like the NFC West also, Johnny, because to
me that Chiefs might not be as good as we
thought they would be. They're not who we thought they were.
Now they were coming on, said the lost of the Bills.
That's a good team on the road.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
And the Bills, yeah, they lost to the Patriots at home,
but maybe the Patriots are better than you think, So
you have that to think about. That fact is the
Chiefs have lost four games, all to winning teams. But
they've lost four games. Meanwhile, the Rams are six and
two and that's a strong team. You know, you have
to give them the credit. We saw them up close
and personal. There's no doubt Seattle is good. And the
forty nine ers, you know who talked about them putting
(19:41):
it together with tape and glue, but it's true. You know,
the forty nine ers have six victories and you don't
know how they're doing it. Brock Perties not even playing.
So that's pretty impressive what they've been able to do.
And when they get fully healthy, they're never going to
be fully healthy, but when they get healthier, they're going
to be tough to stop. So I say the NFC
as well, specifically, Cardinals are a better bad team than
(20:04):
the Raiders for sure. It's funny how the Texans are
playing both these divisions, like you said, and they haven't
played the bad teams the last place team in each
of those division divisions yet, but they will get them
back to back later on this season.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Yep, get the Cardinals and Raiders later in the season
for sure. But yeah, I think it's innoc West two.
I think the I think the Seahawks are the best
team that Texans have faced this year. I think they're
one of the top three teams.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
In the league.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
I think the forty nine ers are really good, even
though the Texans did what they did to them that
day and really dismantled them, and you know at that point,
I think the Rams are really good.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
I think the Rams are coached very very well.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
I think what they don't they maybe not have the
level of stars. I don't know if that's right with
saying it, but they're really well coached. They're really well coached,
and I think that pays off. And that's for all
those teams.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Okay, general, let's do this now.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Volleyball Love Houston Texans have acquired the Love Houston Win
men's volleyball franchise, So this is interesting. Houston now owned
by the Texans, and we'll see how this goes. The
season starts in January. It's gonna be interesting. They play
at the Epicenter on the southwest side of town, just
(21:14):
beyond Sugarland Richmond Rosenberg area. That's an emerging building, I mean,
that's a relatively new building, and the Perry Center northwest side,
so they split time between those two places. Thoughts on
that acquisition, general, I think it's terrific.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
As someone who went to a school Baylor that's got
a good volleyball program every week and it's so popular.
And I love beach volleyball, as I'm sure you guys
do too. Volleyball is just a growing sport. I wish
we could get the McNair's interested in an NHL team
like Bob used to be, and because we need an
(21:47):
NHL team. But I think that was a great announcement.
Congratulations to them. I hope the team is successful.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
General, take us back then, because a lot of people
don't realize that Bob McNair was in pursuit of an
NAH team and then gave it up or whatever when
the NFL became possible or pivoted off of that somehow.
What do you remember about that time? In covering the
McNair's interest in the NHL in the mid nineties.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Bob McNair wanted an an NHL team. Chuck Watson was
his primary partner. The Edmonton Oilers needed a new building,
and of course Edmonton used Bob's interest to help them
get the new building where they play now. And I
told Bob that when Nashville was wanting a new building
(22:38):
and they weren't going to deal with I said, why
don't you steal their team like they stole ours and
get interested in that franchise and then boom, they get
a new building. So he was interested, and that was
add to the Texans got their franchise when the Nashville
thing came up, right, And I don't think Bob was
passionate about hockey the way he is about the NFL,
(22:59):
but he was an old Arrows fan like Chuck was
Chuck on the New Arrows. And so I think they
thought Houston deserved an NHL franchise, and I'm just sorry
they didn't get one.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Had the Texans acquired Edmonton, would they have still called
them the Oilers or would they just go ahead and
throw arrows jerseys on the question, But that would have
been neat in the oiler Edmonton oiler uniform. I mean,
that's a storied franchise in the NHL.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
I believe this the Bob would have jumped all over
the Oilers because the Oilers the Tennessee Oilers. Remember in
the first three years, first two years ninety seven and
ninety eight, they were the Tennessee Oilers, So I think
he would have kept the Edmonton Oilers.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
General, you follow baseball, this previous World Series with the
Blue Jason Dodgers, especially Game seven, and I know we
have our thoughts on what the Astros did, et cetera.
In your lifetime, where does that World Series rank with
the Dodgers in Blue Jays with how good seemingly every
single game was eighteen inning game, your comebacks in all
(24:08):
the games the Dodgers went twice in Toronto and six
and seven. What did you think of this previous World
Series between the Blue Jays and Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
I thought it was incredible, But I remember when I
was eight years old, the New York Yankees the team
everybody loved, played the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series
and the Pirates won three close ones. The Yankees won
three blowouts, and Bill Mazerowski, the Pirates Hall of Fame
(24:37):
second basement, came up in the bottom of the ninth
and it was nine to nine and he had a
home run over the left field wall, walk off home
run to beat the Yankees, a team that dominated you,
ten to nine. And when Bob McNair was pursuing the
franchise and I was going to every NFL meeting around
the country for the chronicle, they had won in the
(24:58):
fall October in Pittsburgh, and I remember Masrowsky's wall was
still standing, so a couple of media people told me
where it was. Stream Williams Pro Football Talk, then the
Four Worst Star telegrams. She and I took off at
night to go find Mas's wall. She didn't have a
clue what it was, but I explained it and we went.
(25:21):
We found it on the pit campus and we found
a security guard who led us into a building and
showed us home plate and said this was home plate
where Masowski hit the home run over that wall. Across
the road where there was like eight lanes going through
the campus, and it is one of the coolest things
I've ever seen. I was listening to my old transistor
(25:41):
radio when Maz hit that home run, but this one
from top to bottom was the greatest, that one because
that was a Yankee team with Mantel and Marison Ford
that dominated. And it's one that first time I really
got serious in becoming a baseball fan.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
I mean, if it's so many right, and obviously here
you have two championships, so you have a lot to
talk about World Series as wear.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
But I went into this not expecting really anything. I
guess I don't know. I just wasn't like Blue Jay's Dodgers, okay, whatever,
But then they had an eighteen eating game. You know,
Freeman hits the home run. You know, the Blue Jays
had their moments where they had to come from behind
in games, and then they've got the leading game seven,
and then the way that from the ninth inning on
with Rojas hitting the home run, and then the way
(26:27):
they went back and forth and extras.
Speaker 4 (26:29):
It was just I mean, it was incredible.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
What's interesting about Saturday was the ratings were so good
and everyone talked about how it smashed the NBA Finals
from this past spring.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
But the YouTube ESPN situation.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Contributed to that, maybe because a lot of people couldn't
watch college football the way they normally wore, right, and
that might have affected the situation as far as all right,
I'll watch baseball at Fox and here we go. General,
thanks so much for joining us, and we'll catch up
on Monday.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
We appreciate the time as always.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Yeas, thank you very much. I will see you Sunday.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
All right, Sunday, Texans and Jaguars at noon, and we're
gonna play Who's better next. We have a bunch of
questions related to that and other things here on Texans Radio.
Right back into the mix here on Texans Radio in
the Hyundai Texans Radio studio. On a day in which
the Texans announced there acquiring Love Volleyball. Yes, Love Houston now,
(27:23):
not the whole league, the Love Houston franchise and it's
very cool. They had the press conference today. Two players
were there in attendance, and the head coach, the mcnairs.
Of course, Texans team president Mike Toeman and Johnny gout
reaction first of all, to getting Love Volleyball.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
I'm a huge volleyball fan. I don't think people know
that I've said this before. I love volleyball. I love
to play it.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
We used to mess around back in the day when
I was teaching at Episcopal way way way back in
the day. One of the one of the teachers slash
coaches that was in my recruiting class, if you will,
she played volleyball at University of North Florida and she
was also a softball coach, and so we played two
on two volleyball. We got to the Sims Jim Court
and play. I loved it and I love to watch it.
(28:05):
I always like talking to Shelby. Shelby be a good
one to talk to you about this. Shelby Coppice, she
calls on the air. Yeah, she calls a lot of
a lot of volleyball twins. Yeah, she calls a lot
of volleyball games and she plays. And I just think
I love the sport. I love it, both men's and women's.
And I know she gets Shelby gets mad about the
men's because it's just power.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
It's just spikes all over the place.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
But uh, the women's game is is a little bit
more strategic, but it is. I don't know, there's something
just majestic about seeing you know, bump set spike and
then seeing somebody just gliding through the air above the
net and just wham. So I love volleyball and I
love one volleyball and football crossover. So it's a good
one because the last volleyball football crossover I could think
(28:46):
of was Nico Iamaliavo, who is now at UCLA.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
He was a great high school vollyball player had in California.
You play Long Beach, Polly. He's a great, I mean great,
great volleyball player, but you got paid eight million dollars
to go to Tennessee. So he decided he was gonna
go play football. But that's the last football volleyball crossover.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
I can think of.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
So I'm pumped and the games were I didn't realize
that picenter and was out in Rosenberg. There's my stopping
grounds man. So I definitely will make my way out
there for games for sure, rotape between there and the Berry.
This is stuff we'll talk more about as the years
progress here. But the years, I mean, they start the
season in January. Stay tuned for more information and details
(29:28):
on Love Houston Volleyball.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
It's gonna be cool. Okay, let's get to this who's better?
All right, Texans have two games coming up with the
Colts down the stretch here. They just got done with
the Broncos. Both the Colts and the Broncos are seven
and two. Who's the better seven and two team? Colts
Broncos thought Broncos Broncos.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
I mean you could say, oh, the Colts have the
best offense in the league, are one of the best.
The Broncos had one of the best defenses in the league.
I just think the Broncos play so far physically physically.
Look at our injury report from yesterday. Look at that
injury report.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
That's no joke.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
Yeah, I mean we had three guys with concussions, and
that's I think, what's gonna happen when you play Denver
Like they played that physically, and that's not fun.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
Point. It's not fun when you.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Play a team that's that physical at all levels. I mean,
their secondary was physical. I mean, Brandon Jones and TeleNova telloha, fun,
you hit everything that moved they were. I mean, and
Chris Abrams Drain is tiny and he's the guy obviously
that hit CJ on that play.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
So they they are they are a handful.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
And I think, I hope is that what the Steelers,
and the Steelers turned over the Colts a number of times,
but that's been kind of the Daniel Jones thing. When
he struggles, he turns the ball over. So maybe now
if the Colts start playing some better defenses and no
face one and the Falcons are tiny, they are small,
(31:03):
but they are fast and physical, and hopefully that gives
the Colts a lot of issues and the Colts come
back seven to three as opposed to eight and two.
But that's my hope. But I just feel like the
Broncos are a better football team. I know the Colts
beat them earlier in the year, but that game was over.
Game was over, the game WI leverage penalty, a second
chance to kick it kick a field at the end
made it won the game twenty nine to twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
But I felt like it was.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
The Broncos that really had control of that game. Then
it was just the Colts with the ball last, and
they got a favor, they got a feel goal to
go their way at the end.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
So I'm gonna go cold, I'm gonna go Broncos.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
It's weird how last year at this time the Texans
were done with the Colts season series.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
They had played both games already.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Yeah, this year, were three weeks away from the first
matchup with them, So every year is different. I complained
about this last year. I thought, there's no way these
two teams should not be playing each other down the
stretch at least one of the matchups. Yep, and they'll
be playing each other in the regular season of each man.
I'm crossing my fingers that one means something for your
Texans to get into the postseason. I mean, I'd rather
(32:05):
be in by then, but that would take quite the
miracle run. In any case, you got to go seven
to two down the stretch somehow, So we're here for it.
Let's see if it happens, all right?
Speaker 4 (32:15):
Next two? Is better?
Speaker 1 (32:16):
Better team to coach next year? Would it be the
Cleveland Browns? And I don't know Stefanski's back or not,
but let's just say the Cleveland Browns, the Jets. I
would assume Aaron's back, but you never know in the
NFL world, or the Tennessee Titans, who have a vacancy
currentcy currently. So Titans, Jets, Browns. Who would you rather
(32:37):
coach next year? What's the best opportunity, Johnny. The Jets
have all those picks, the Browns have what they got,
and the Titans have cam Ward and who knows what else.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
You know, how I feel about the picks, man, I
am not less sneed or you know, I want those picks, man. Yeah,
I like having those picks because.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Did you say Carrie or a Gordon? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (33:02):
Yeah, because she shefter them picks when she made the
Sauce Gardener deal.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Yeah. God, I promise you Chris Ballad didn't make that decision.
I promise you that.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Greg Doyle covers the Colts or you know, as a
calumnist in Indianapolis.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
He's like, this is no coincidence.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Balad has been the GM for how many every years?
He has never made a deal quite like this. She
takes over as the basically the CEO football ops, and
now it happens.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
It's no coincidence anyhow, Uh.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Point being, I love them picks, but I love the
picks when the picks turn into more picks. I love
what Nick was able to do because Nick took the
three first round picks and he turned that into so
much more, especially in twenty twenty three when he made
the deal for you know, Deshaun, Yes, you got the
(33:54):
three first round picks and then you got some other
land yap as you'd like to say. But he turned
that into more. He extended did that run from twenty
two to twenty three, twenty four. He took a little
bit and dipped it into twenty twenty five. If Darren Mugi,
who I think is worth his assault as the Jets GM,
He's got three first round picks in twenty twenty seven
(34:15):
in a draft that is going to be a knockout
that is going to be Jeremiah Smith and wide receiver
Ryan Williams, wide receiver Camp Coleman from Auburn. The wide
receivers in that draft, they are going to be out
of control. It could also mean arch Manning coming out
after a couple of years as a season starter at
the University of Texas. There are opportunities to build the team.
(34:35):
Go get the quarterback, and maybe it's not even a
drafted quarterback they go out and get maybe it's maybe
they ironically I'm saying this, maybe they go out and
find their own Sam Darnold.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
They gotta pay some money, but they got plenty of money.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Use the picks then to you know, take three first
round picks in twenty seven and turn it into two
and twenty seven, but two and twenty eight and then
to two and twenty eight you turn into you know,
first and the second.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
The other thing about quitting the quitting Williams trade, they
got a first and a second.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
So they got the first in twenty twenty seven, but
they're gonna second round pick, yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
In twenty twenty six from Dallas. Yeah, that could end
up being a top forty pick.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
So I feel like I want all those picks because
I want to be able to draft and develop my team.
And however I get my quarterbacks. However I get my quarterback,
I don't care how I get it. Maybe I gotta
draft it. Maybe I got a free agent thing, maybe
I got a trade.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
Whatever.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
You have the ammunition to do all of that. But
you can now build the foundation of your team the
way that Aaron Glenn wants, the way the organization wants,
and you can move upward and onward from that point.
But you have the picks to be able to do it.
So I'm gonna say, Jets.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Okay, even though New York Woodie, I get it. Yeah,
I get it.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
I get it. The picks are nice. Absolutely, Who's better
continues better chance to get more catches this week? Don't
Schultz Nico Collins. Now, Nico missed a game a couple
of weeks ago. It was a victory over the forty
nine ers. He has thirty three catches on the year.
Schultz has thirty eight. He's the team's leading receiver. And
(36:12):
Schultz has had some games. I think had six last week,
Nico had seven.
Speaker 4 (36:15):
That kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
So they've been kind of neck and neck ish at
times anyway, and I think clearly CJ felt good about
throwing the ball to Schultz. Nico sometimes covered up, gets
the extra guy on him. But what do you think
this weekend Nico versus Schultz for more catches for your Texans.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
That's a great question.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
I feel like Jacksonville's secondary, they they kind of flipped
over from last year. You know, they got rid of Cisco,
who I thought was less than average, and they got
rid of the guy Darnell Savage, he was average two.
And those are the two safeties. So now they got
wingered playing one spot.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Now. Eric Murray's on IR. Eric Murry and I are.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
Sant Tonio Johnson, who ended the game with interception against US.
He said, the other I think you can get after
the safeties, and that would seemingly imply Dalton Schultz. But
the one guy the Jacksonville Jaguars had that I felt
like could go toe to toe with Nico was the
guy that trades to the Browns. Oh, and that was
Tyson Campbell. Now Campbell wasn't he got burned on the
double move Nico threw at him. But Campbell is the size,
(37:19):
physicality demeanor to go one on one against Nco. I
don't think Newsom is that guy. And Jordan Lewis is
banged up.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
Now.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
The guy last year in Week four that played really
well against US was Monterrek Brown, which is weird, so
I would imagine we'll see maybe a little bit more
of him. That said, with how they're banged up at corner,
No Travis Hunter, Jordan Lewis banged up, No Tyson Campbell
and Greg Newsom in a mix, I think at that
point it ends.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
Up being Nico.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
Okay, so you like Nico better to get more catches
than this one. Next two's better, better story, This is subjective, Okay,
better story?
Speaker 4 (37:55):
This year?
Speaker 1 (37:57):
The five and four Panthers or the five and three Bears. Now,
the Bears are very often the offseason darlings. They were
prior to twenty twenty four. They went belly up. They
were prior to twenty twenty five as well well among
the offseason darlings. And here they are at five and three.
They're going along. It doesn't look pretty always, but they
are in it very much in that NFC North because
(38:20):
last I checked, the Packers have five wins, the Lions
have five wins. The Bears are sem tied for first
because the Packers have a little edge because they have
a tie. They're five to two and one as opposed
to five and three as the Lions and Bears are,
and even the Vikings are there four and four. This
is a very tough division. It was looking like it
might be early on, but everybody's five hundred or above.
(38:42):
And you got three teams with five victories. But who's
the better story? Because here are the Panthers, And I
didn't think this would happen that Dave Canalis has them
going pretty good here at five and four heading into
a game with the Saints this weekend, which I'm gonna
put it in their quotes. They should win famous last
words yep, our story Johnny Panthers.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
Okay, the Panthers going into that, I mean when we
played them in the preseason.
Speaker 4 (39:05):
I know it's preseason, I get it.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
We played them at practice, the one practice and I
remember walking out of there going, well, I think they're
going to be better, especially offensively. They're going to be better.
At least at that point. I thought. Then maybe a
lot of people thought. But what really has been the case,
other than the Bills game, is the defense has played decently,
especially the last four or five weeks. They got hammered
(39:27):
by the Patriots, but then they played decently against the Dolphins.
They held the Cowboys at twenty seven, which you go,
that's twenty seven points, but you know, the Cowboys can
score on pretty much everybody, at least they were kind
of earlier in the year. But then they held the
Jets to six, and they held the Packers to thirteen
on the road. So the defense is now starting to
play a little bit better. Bryce is back. I saw
(39:49):
a really great video. Our buddy Josh Norris from Underdog
Fantasy put it out and he talked about he showed
a video and it was from the end zone view
and it showed it showed Bryce Young, and it showed
Bryce in the shotgun, and he was talking to ric
o'dowell and he was pointing out He's like pointing out
a linebacker, and so it gave the impression that it
(40:10):
was going to be a pass player.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
So the Packers send this blitz. They got a cross
dog blitz.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
It ends up being an inside draw and the Packers
are completely flummixed and Dabell hits it for like twenty
yards sets up the game winning field goal.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
He's been a big spark plug.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
Yeah, he's been huge. He's been huge for them. But
you're seeing the evolution and the maturation of Bryce Hung.
The defense is playing better. Dave Canalis I always feel
for Dave Canalis because I always know Dave Tepper is
somewhere out there, like looming over him, and Canalis is
just like, yeah, I don't care, I'm just gonna coach
coach this team. They start off one and three and
(40:47):
they won four to the last five, and the Bears
are always thought to be the Bears. Saying the Bears
are a better story is you know, kind of like
saying it's.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
Buying the narrative. Yeah, it's narrative, and it's like, it's
the Bears. They should be better.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
The media, the national media is so desirous of the
Bears being successful. And I get it, because if the
Bears are good, it's good for the league. I guess again,
the number three market of the country and all that.
I just don't like all the hype around them and
they constantly fail to meet it.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
But we'll see if they meet it this year.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
I got one more quick one, okay, all right, I
was gonna do. Better chance to win the AFC West
Chiefs or Broncos. You just get that to me really
quick here, Chiefs to Broncos. Chiess, okay, Chiefs, Chiefs, even
though they're behind them. That's what they play them twice, Chiefs.
Better chance to win this weekend maybe slightly more interesting here,
Steelers or Chargers in LA. It'll be a steel Town
(41:45):
take oh over yep of that stadium. And the Steelers
come in five and three having beaten the Colts Chargers
six and three. They just made the deal for what
tackle do they acquire, Oh, Trevor Penn Trevor Penning so
they can get him, And I don't know how they're
going to configure the offensive live but I got him
for the Saints.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Who's gonna win this weekend? Johnny Yeah, he Trevor Penning,
guess what you got, Alex Heisman and TJ. Watt, good
luck step in a tack. Those guys are starting to
come around here. I like the Chargers. I think the
Chargers at home. I can't. I can't believe me.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
I hate both of these I don't hate both these teams.
I don't like rooting for Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, and I
don't want the Chargers to be so I have a
tough time.
Speaker 4 (42:22):
With this one. I do too.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
I just I like the Chargers will kind of find
their way through. I do think it would be Pittsburgh West,
there's no doubt, and if they can build off of that,
and I would like to see the Steelers win. I
just think the Chargers are two up and down. They're
frugaisy and maybe it went over this A big win
for the Steelers will let people will remind people that
that is the case the Chargers, but we'll see.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
I'd love to see the Chargers thoroughly checked out at
the time the Texans.
Speaker 4 (42:49):
Visits there later this year seventeen.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
Let's go Yeah, coming up Houston Methodist Minutes and other
things on the way out here on Texans All Access.
Speaker 4 (42:58):
Action Pack.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
Final segment for you tonight here on Texans Radio as
we give you the injury report in advance of Houston
Methodist Minutes. Now for the Houston Texans, some good news today,
not the ultimate good news, but some really good news
really because Will Anderson Junior, with a quad injury, did
not participate in practice yesterday, but he was limited today,
so that means he's ramping up. Let's hope that continues
(43:21):
to be the case. Also with Deniko autri who did
not practice yesterday with a knee injury, but he was
limited today, so that's good. Nick Chubb foot injury, did
not practice yesterday, he was limited. Damian Pierce limited with
a personal issue, not injury related, so who knows what
that is, but Pierce is healthy. Dalton Schultz full participation,
(43:42):
Braxton Barrios full participation. Both those guys were limited yesterday,
so that's good now for the Jaguars. Jordan Lewis, talented
corner for them, still out with a neck, Brian Thomas
Junior still out with an ankle those are the big headlines.
Diami Brown another receiver who is limited yesterday coming back
from a concussion. He was full today, So trending in
(44:04):
the right direction for them. Now let's get to Houston
Methodist Minutes Sports Psychology. It's a two parter, part one.
This week, let's talk about pressure in sports, the performance
issue of playing well in the clutch. Here's doctor Alicia
Robashow from Houston Methodist.
Speaker 5 (44:22):
You know, I think each one of us is built
to be able to surround a certain amount of pressure
in our life. Some of us cope better than others.
Some of us shake it off, some of us if
we get rattled. So I think learning to be able
to absorb your environment without letting it affect your level
of sport and your focus and your concentration is challenging
(44:43):
for all of us. It's just some of us are
better at it than others.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
All Right, So people listening obviously follow sports, they love sports,
and I want to talk about that, but I also
want to talk about things that can benefit everybody. You
have a presentation to give in front of your company,
or you have a sales call to make or whatever.
Public speaking is one of the greatest fears that people have.
What are some things that people can do before they
(45:07):
undergo something in which they feel a lot of pressure
to keep themselves even keeled and perform at their best.
Speaker 5 (45:14):
You know, I think obviously practice is always is helpful
and being organized. So if you have to do a
talk and you know you have a few key points,
having a few key points jotted down in front of you,
practicing those not necessarily reading from a cue card, but
knowing what you're going to feel like when you're under pressure,
and that practicing of that stimuli that makes us a
(45:34):
little nervous is great. Deep breathing, making sure you you know,
they always say, oh, picture everybody naked. No, no, just
picture calm, picture environment that is non threatening. That is
an easy way for you to just be able to smile, relax,
take a deep breath and talk about what you know.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
Doctor Alicia Robischow from Houston Methodist, the official health care
provider of the Houston Texans, Houston Methodist Leading Medicine Texans
and Jags Sunday at noon, can't wait for that. It'll
be live right here and on the Bowl one hundred
point three FM and on the Odyssey app. Don't forget
about that app, and you can watch at home and
listen to us if you just sync up your DVR
(46:14):
with the app.
Speaker 4 (46:16):
Check it out. One more note on the way out.
Speaker 1 (46:18):
Our condolences go to the family friends the Cowboys organization
as Marshawn Neeland, Dallas Cowboy dead at twenty four of
an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound early this morning. Just
a terrible story and our hearts go out to him
and his family. Obviously, that's going to do it for
the show tonight, Thursday Night Football on the Way. Have
(46:38):
a great evening, Go Texans.
