Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Monday, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome into Texans All Access from the Hyundai Texans Radio studio.
John Harris football on a sideline reporter alongside the voice
of the Texans, Mark Van Muir, Mark, Good afternoon, good evening.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
How are you doing. It feels like afternoon because these
are the longest days of the year. Yeah, in a
good way.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I mean, so I'm I'm told, yeah, this is what
you want, the equinox. This is what that's what it is, right,
and then six months later you get the opposite, the
shortest days of the year. But we live in Texas
where it kind of stays warm. You know, I might
get a little cold wave. That sounds pretty good right
about now, a little cold wave. But anyway, Yeah, great weekend.
(00:41):
Rockets made some big news. I know, I don't know
what you have planned. You and I did not talk
about this, but I know you got something planned I
relevant or related sort of to that.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yeah, not just sort of, I mean pre yeah that,
but we'll we'll get to that in a second. And
it was a pretty wild weekend. LSU wins the College
World Series. The umpires were not complicit in LSU winning it,
but they showed their backside, throwing out the coastal manager. Yeah,
(01:16):
thirty Like I think it was thirty pitches into the game. Yeah,
twenty eight pitches into the game, threw him out, warn him.
I absolutely just And this is why the Harris family
has this love hate relationship with officiating and umpiring for
that reason.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
And you know, you know how I feel about this.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
One of my most famous losses was all result of
guys that could tell you every rule in the rule book,
but they couldn't manage the damn game yet. Manage That
always became my theory. It's like, manage the game. That's
why I like Cleete Blakeman. Cleet manages the game. He
knows how the game needs to be managed. That game
manager got a warning. Fifteen seconds later he's getting tossed,
(01:55):
and it's like, come on, man, it's in the first
damn inning of Game two of the seed US National Championship.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
I mean, it's red.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
You whatever happened to like going over and talking and
arguing and face to face an earl weaver.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
All right, that's a little extreme to go full, a
little dated, but that's okay.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
It's dated, that's okay, but it's worth watching because The
point is, you don't get much of that anymore.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
And I know you don't want to have that kind of.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Show in college baseball especially, but a little bit of
it is okay, a little argument, and say, listen, you
know you're gonna get a toss next. And I know
how people lose their minds in athletic competition, there's no doubt. Look,
I was coaching basketball last week and I Bad Mark
came out at the end of the game to the
scorers table, and then I immediately had made amends right after,
(02:42):
after twenty seconds of cool off. But right away I
was a little hot about something.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Okay, I've seen bad Mark. He doesn't come out very often.
He stays in his little hole.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
I keep them hidden.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yes, so bad Mark. Just so I have a reference point.
Twenty fourteen Washington Redskins. We get knocked off the air,
Bad Mark.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Not that bad, not that, but a taste of it,
a little if that's a drink, A couple of SIPs,
A couple of SIPs of that Bad Mark.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Okay, listen, Bad Mark and bad John live on two
different planets.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
It's two different planet and people don't believe it. People
don't believe that I can get mad.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
You get mad. That's funny. I've never seen that. I
want to see that. No, you don't. The best part
is you told me this.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Our first year together was twenty fourteen, and you and
I know each other before that. But in twenty fourteen,
I in the building and I remember one day we
were in the room next door and You're like, oh this,
you didn't say bad.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Mark. You're like, oh, I got that. I've got that
club in my bag. And I just remember sitting over there, going,
he's the nicest guy. There's no chance.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
And then twenty fourteen, first game I've ever, first game
I've ever done the regular season, O'Brien's first game, My
first game, there's a storm of third or knocks us
off the air. And I had just come from radio
station where that happened regularly. So I was just like,
all right, whatever, make do met Mark came out that
(04:11):
day and I was like, Oh, he was right, he
does have that club in his bag.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
So was upset, Yeah, that's that upset. The entire twenty
twenty one first half of the season. I was that
upset over engineering issues with Texans Radio in the booth.
If you mess with the booth or if one if
one messes with something in the booth, bad mark will
come out because that is sacred territory and especially avoidable mistakes.
(04:39):
Right now, we have the best crew going right now,
we just have it going on, and even good people
sometimes have made errors. Me concluded, Okay, I'm not I
call myself a good person, but you know, unlikely you
would think to make an error in many situations. That's
coming out all wrong. I've made mistakes, but it can happen, sure,
(05:00):
but it's still not going to make me happy.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
But when it does happen, that's right.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Sometimes it's made me happy because I feel like I've
cleansed as I've let it go.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
But uh not often.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
The other part of this was in that whole situation
was and Coastal Carolina got beat by LSU and congratulations
as Tigers were pairing that lead, but the first base
official or umpire was running in and in kind of
the melee, he gets knocked down and he starts screaming about, oh,
that's a two game suspension because you make contact with
(05:32):
the umpire.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
It's like, no, he tripped. So it was like the
entire umpiring.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Crew just making you know, you know what, out of themselves,
and it was like, that's hard.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Wasn't It wasn't necessary.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
And that's why I just I've always said that you
give me an MP or a REF that I understands
how to manage the game, those things aren't going to happen.
And you know, they had to do balls and strikes,
and I understand, I get it. You know, everybody's fired up,
everybody's amped up. You gave him and he couldn't hear you.
(06:05):
Twenty five thousand people in the place. He couldn't even
hear what you were saying. And then he leans out
of He's like, what did you say? And he said,
so balls and strikes and he's like, okay, good because
you missed three l right, that's all he said.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
He got tossed for that.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, well that's arguing balls and strikes in their ideas.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
And he goes, that's enough. It's a zero tolerance policy.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I guess Johnny and I had to kind of that
was really mad about that.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
And the Land of AI.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
It's just getting to the point where and I know,
reviews get so they bobbed the game down in basketball,
Oh my gosh. Really we got to sit through another
review and its forever. Can we have ai to say Nope? Yes,
I mean in this case, but I think we'll get there.
I feel like we're going to get there. I think
we will. But it'll be weird that the robots are
(06:52):
better than we are and they're deciding these games.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
You know what I'm saying. The robots. Yeah, the robots.
Now we're going to complain about the robots. Hey, the robots. Yeah,
and the robot is always right. The robot.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
I can't wait till a quarterback after a game is like,
you know what happened tonight?
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Look?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Man, the robots just took over and it was gonna
be that one.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
What happened to humanity? The robots took over? Yeah, like
the Pat tricks. We're all batteries now, Yeah, you mentioned it.
The big news in Houston.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Kevin Durant traded to the Rockets and that was kind
of early on Sunday. Yeah, like whoa, Okay, so a
lot of people had time to digest this. I know
Shawn ha Seith that I listened to this morning, we're
talking about it. I would have liked to have heard
Brian Geltzeiler from Serious xmmba good friend of.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Mine, get it on the Odyssey app.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
That's what I'm doing the way home, which is typically
what I do to listen to things that I've missed.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
But if you missed it, I don't know where you've been.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
But Kevin Durant will come to Houston in exchange for
Jalen Green, Dylan Brooks and all losing Brooks the number
ten pick, which was Phoenix's originally then it went to Brooklyn,
but then last summer rophel Stone traded for those Phoenix
picks with Brooklyn, and so now the Rockets have all
these Phoenix Huns picks, and so they get to ten
(08:18):
back for this year in five second rounders in twenty
twenty five, which maybe go back and look at the
NBA order, The Rockets do have a pick they have
mister Irrelevant in the twenty twenty five draft coming.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Up on Tuesday. They have the last of the second
round picks. I think fifty nine to sixty whatever that
number is. Okay, so that's the trade. Yeah, Okay.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
At first glance, I look at it and go, I
like that trade. But it got me thinking because there
have been over time and I'm not talking just you know,
the entire franchise history for these three, but in the
last fifteen years ish or less, Astros Rockets Texans have
(09:00):
all made significant trades that have kind of rocked everybody
who's like, whoa, what did we just do? Oh my gosh,
we got this guy? Oh what wait? Who's that?
Speaker 1 (09:10):
And then that guy turns into a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
So I want to go back and I want your
thought that we're gonna start with the Texans and look
at some of these trades that the Texans have had,
what we thought at the time and what it ended
up being, and did it change our mind about that
particular trade.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Okay, so we're gonna start with the.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Texans in this one in twenty nineteen, and you know
where I'm going with this. Yeah, Laromie Tonsall and Kenny
Stills come to Houston for two first round picks, a
second round pick, a fourth rounder, a sixth rounder, and
Julian Davenport and Johnson Bademosi thought, at the time of
(09:53):
the trade, and now that the trade is being completed,
what do we think about this particular trade.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
I thought it was a lot to give up, but
I was really happy to get Laramie. At the time,
I was thinking, Okay, you gave up a ton to
get him, but at least you have one of the
very best in the game. So no matter what your
feelings are about losing all that draft capital, everything he
gave up, you got Laramie.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Tunsel. I was worried that he wasn't signed upon delivery.
That was yeah, that was a.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Bother to me because I thought, wait a minute, there's
no leverage here to have him sign. Now you're basically
you can all for nothing forced well, and you're forced
to pay him whatever he wants at this point because
you can't have him walk after giving up everything he
gave up. I like getting Stills in the deal too,
and he Stills was good for this team for a while.
For a year he was good year and a half,
(10:50):
but especially that year he was good.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
He came in handy the Saints game.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
My gosh, right out of the gate, he makes one
of the biggest plays. Now, you ultimately couldn't hang on
to that lead, but that touchdown with less than a
minute to go in New Orleans on Monday night football
was humongous, and numerous other players caught the TD against
the Chiefs part of the twenty four to nothing lead.
But anyway, at the time, I thought, great that you
(11:13):
got him. It's a lot to give up. And then
I thought later later, and look, we all love Laramie. Great,
But later I thought, you didn't want Trent Williams. I
guess because he's older. Couldn't you have gotten Trent Williams?
And maybe there are other reasons too for less from Washington,
because they were kind of over a barrel on Trent.
He didn't want to play there and Laramie was, I
(11:33):
guess fine in Miami. I can't speak for Laramie, but
that was kind of strange to me.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Yeah, that part of it, like why Laramie and not
not focusing at all on Trent Williams, especially because Trent
was a Texan or is it I mean a Texan's
from long long View? I think so.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
I remember when it happened. I was very happy to
get Laramie.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Laramie was a number one in Harris one hundred and
twenty sixteen, so I'd always been kind of a namor
with Laramie followed his career in Miami, and I just
remember thinking, boy, we just got a really, really good
left tackle.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
I look back and I think.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
We essentially rented a Lamborghini for about five years.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
We had to pay a lot for it. But we
got four Pro Bowl seasons out of him.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
I think the only one we didn't get was was
the year he got hurt. It was twenty twenty one,
I believe. So we got we got Pro Bowl seasons
out of him. You know, was he a great run blocker? No?
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Then he loved the run block No.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Was there some consternation last year about all that in
the in the room. Did they get the most out
of the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
No? But as an individual man, he's he was really
really good.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Made the playoffs three times with him right, and you
won three playoff games with him right, and he was
in two different eras. Look, he contributed mightily to this organization.
You can't slice it any other way. Then you can
give the rest of the story, which is, yeah, which
he was a better run blocker whatever offensive line culture,
however you want to define it, and then they trade
him from here.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
But I think overall, there's no question it was a success.
You just didn't get a championship, which is what you
really wanted in the Laramie tunsil Era, not just Laramie
doing it for you, but part of the mix.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Yep, absolutely, Okay, next trade, these are no particular Okay.
April of twenty four, Texas trade a second round pick
the data acquired from the Vikings. Yeah, for Stavan Diggs,
A sixth and a twenty twenty five to fifth.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
I thought this was a great deal. I thought of
that time was a great deal.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
And I knew that Nick and Dimico, we're not going
to do this. See this administration. I have utter faith
that they do their due diligence on everybody, and they're
gonna take calculated risks, you know, a far lesser level
of things. Deontay Johnson, Right, they signed him because they
desperately need help a wide receiver. Last year, they take
(13:53):
a shot, doesn't work. Let's just bail on this immediately.
We did not invest that much in this anyway. With Diggs,
I felt like they checked it out. They checked it out,
and Diggs was wonderful here for half a season. It
would have been great if they had Digs down the stretch.
I think lot it changes at least one more win, Johnny,
(14:14):
and I'll just put it in those numbers, it's at
least one more win, and who knows what it does
for you in the postseason because he's so reliable, such
a great route runner. So I thought Diggs was a
great deal and I was very happy with it, and
it kind of puts you over the top. Is this
preseason buzz team a contender?
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Now?
Speaker 3 (14:32):
I know ultimately it didn't work out, but again, had
Diggs not gotten hurt, maybe it would have been different.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
I think I felt the time was a good trade.
I still feel today leg was a good trade worth
the risk, and it was definitely worth the risk. And yeah,
it didn't pan out because he got hurt. It wasn't
because Steph was a butt head or an Aho or
anything like that. He was what this team needed. And
I've talked to a number of people in this building
(14:57):
that have said those very words, like we need it
and we missed him.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I think you're exactly right.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Okay, let's get to another wide receiver that was traded
in twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Oh gosh, the day covid hits.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Essentially, Texas trade DeAndre Hopkins and a fourth rounder to
the Arizona Cardinals for David Johnson and a second The
second turned into Ross Blacklock, one pick before the Colts
drafted Jonathan Taylor. I will go first because.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I hated this trade at the time.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I remember going on Texans radio that night and before
we did that show, I remember saying to my wife Paige,
I don't know what to say about this because I
hate this deal.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
I hated it. Then, however, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
I mean, you know, over the next few years, you know,
having hop would have been great in twenty twenty. Then
obviously things go sideways with DeShawn in twenty twenty one.
I mean, I think hop would have wasn't it twenty twenty.
He probably was gonna be gone by twenty twenty one,
just because there would have been probably another team that really, hey, man, wow,
(16:09):
the Texans are Hey, let's get in this bidding for
DeAndre Hopkins. I mean, Ron Rivero is in Washington. He
was like, we didn't even know they had it, they
were trading him. Didn't even know he's on the market.
We could have given them a deal. So all that
being said, I thought it was a horrible deal at
the time. I think they got no return on it.
I look back on it today and I feel the
exact same way. Hop had plenty of game left, would
(16:31):
love to have him stay here. I know at some
point you probably would have traded him because you probably
would have been your best asset to trade in years
when they got tough. But you would have gotten more
of a return than a running back who basically was
DOA and a second. And then you screwed up the
second round pick by passing on running back when you
really needed it. But because you got the running back
(16:52):
in the trade, you decided not to draft the running
back that you should have had, Jonathan Taylor.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
So that all said, I thought it was horrible.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Well, like you said, you compound the mistake with more mistakes, yes, right,
which look and a lot of teams can do that,
a lot of executives can do that. Yeah, you make
one mistake, you make another, And this is how life
is sometimes.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
And you get a mistake.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
You hit the ball out of the sand trap badly,
it's in the rough, and now you don't get out
of the rough and it's still in the rough or whatever.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
So this happens. But I'm with you. I love Top,
absolutely adored him, one of the most beloved Texas players ever.
So to part with him was excruciating to begin with.
You had to get whatever the return was. This is
my opinion. You had to get something that said one,
a first round draft choice.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
You had to get at least one first rounder in
the hot deal. Whatever else happens happens. But I got
to be able to walk away from the table saying
I got a one.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Yes, And what you get with that one is.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Going to be very important too, because you want it
to be highly valued and look upon greatly by your
fan base and ownership and everything. Right, But you didn't
get a one. You got the fortieth pick in the draft,
and like you said, it didn't work out anyway. Had
Ross Blacklock turned into Aaron Donald, now we'd be singing
a little bit of a different tune, sure, but it
still wouldn't have removed the sting of saying goodbye to
(18:17):
hop Now, they did put together a receiver room, this
is worth noting.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
That was pretty good.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
And with Watson in twenty twenty, they led the league
in passing. Without Hopkins, now, they had a bad season
though they only won four games. They couldn't run the ball.
Jonathan Taylor would have helped. They couldn't run the ball.
And wasn't that James Robinson's first year also as an
undrafted Ye, yeah, I think yeah, COVID year. Not that
you should have picked up on that, but again, you know, uh,
(18:47):
there were other than what you got in David Johnson,
shod Cohn's son was able to pick up on Robinson
as an undrafted free agent.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
The most of the situation. I can't yeh out don him?
Why not? So yeah, that was Look, that was a
dark day.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
We all know it. You and I went live that night.
We had no idea what to say. Look, all I
could say was let's see what happens. You know came
out the next couple of days is what happened. And
we were like, all right, moving on because there was
really nothing there, nothing you could say about it.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
There was no positive aspect to take out of it.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
And clearly four games later, the coaches fired. The guy
who makes the decision is fired. So it didn't work out.
And it's too bad because he won a lot of
games here, and he won divisions and he turned this
thing right back into a winner after a dismal twenty
thirteen season. And I want to give him all the
credit in the world for those things, but at the
(19:45):
end it just fizzled out badly.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Okay, so here's one. We don't talk about this a lot.
We are removed from it a little bit. But I
wanted to go back and look at what this was.
In two thousand and seven, gim Rick Smith trades from
Matt Shop. It turned into a first round pick swap.
So we were at eight. The Falcons were at ten
(20:07):
flip flopped and two second round picks and seven eight
from Matt Shop. When I went back and I looked
at that mark, I thought, that's actually a really good
deal for what we got from matt You didn't break
the bank. Now two second round picks, yeah you would
like to have had, but you got your starting quarterback,
(20:27):
a guy who goes to the Pro Bowl, and you
have this guy for the next six seven years. And yeah,
twenty twelve's arms started to shut down a little bit.
In twenty thirteen it was it was dead. But when
you trade basically a small pick swap and two seconds
to go, get a guy to be your starter for
the next how many ever years now, seven oh eight,
(20:48):
he's banged up, but O nine he makes the Pro Bowl?
Speaker 1 (20:50):
What ten?
Speaker 2 (20:50):
He makes the Pro Bowl? Your thought about the Matt
Shop trade. Now that you look back at it, what
did you think of.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
The time and what do you think now, Well, you
didn't know how he was going to be long term,
but the prospects look good and that was pretty much
the going rate, if you will some construction of that,
the Jimmy Johnson chart whatever the two two's look. The
Texans went six and ten in two thousand and six,
David Carr's last year. Kubiaks First, they had to do
(21:18):
something and it was either that or you go with
Rosenfels as your starter, because there was really nobody else
in the market at the time that you could get.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
So Shab was.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Basically twice in their history. They go out and get
the number one quarterback on the market. Shab was on
the market, not a free agent, so he had to
trade for him. In twenty sixteen, they go for Brock.
He was the number one quarterback on the market because Romo,
had he been available, was going.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
To be the number one quarterback in the market.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
And as far as the Durant thing goes, that's the
only equivalent I could possibly find in Texans history. Had
they been able to go get Tony Romo in twenty sixteen.
That would have been because that was a division winner.
And I know the Rockets were the two seed in
the West, which is even more impressive, but it was
a winning team going to get Tony Romo. That would
have been like the Durant equivalent in my eyes. I
(22:05):
know Durant's a champion and whatever, but you know, come on,
I seek, come on, because he was with Golden State.
I mean he went to a really good team. He
went to a championship team and won a championship right
right now, he comes to the two seed, so a
winning team. Good, He's on a good team. Good and
they didn't have to gut the team, you know. Related
to that deal, I was happy. But with the Texans
(22:26):
when they got shop at the time, Johnny I was
very happy with the deal and two to zero out
of the gate No. Seven, extremely happy with the deal.
But then amm Green gets hurt because he was part
of that offseason. Andre got hurt for a lot. Andre
got hurt. He was out seven games or something. It
was with an MCL It was rough. Ultimately, you finished
five hundred for the first time in two thousand and seven.
(22:47):
But Rosenfels has to finish the season. Our buddy Andre Davis,
who's in player development now for the Texans, returns two
kickoffs for a touchdown in the season finale in order
to get you to five hundred for the first time ever.
Shob is not able to stay fully healthy until two
years later, but he finished the eight season with four
consecutive no he won uh yeah, three to one down
(23:07):
the stretch because they lost the Oakland game to DeMarcus
JaMarcus russell Out.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
That hurt. But anyway, I was happy with the shop
deal at the time, okay, and I.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Still am yep. Had they not made that deal, I
don't know what they're doing in seven. Flacco's available in
eight in the draft, they might have been able to
get Flacco. Would he work in a Kubiak offense? I
think soul because he worked at KI.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
I think it were taken a little bit, but I
think he would have worked at that point.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
But with Kubiak in twenty fourteen, the Ravens have their
best offensive season at the time.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
That's right, And there's more coming up, including the trade
for a quarterback that resulted in the trade of a
quarterback that led to the trade after a quarterback, I'll
explain it all next. And the Astros and Rockets have
had some trades in addition to this Kevin Durant trade.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
Boy, the Rockets have had a few.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
But the ones from the Astros, the three that hit
for me, man, those are some good ones.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
We hit all the next right here in Texans All Access.
What's uping everybody?
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Welcome back this Monday the issue of Texans All Access.
Appreciate you being here with me. John Harris, football analyst,
sideline reporter for your Houston Texans, also calling those TV
preseason games. Can't wait to get back up to booth
with my man and d klu and Kevin Coogler alongside
Shelby Coppage down on the sideline.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Now, Mark and I have been going through.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
The Texans trades that and there have been plenty of
them that have stood out over the years. And we're
gonna get to some of the Astros and Rockets. But
first we had to hit on the one that happened
on Draft Night twenty seventeen, and that draft Texas were
(24:46):
sitting at twenty five. They needed to get up into
the top twelveth to go get a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
They didn't.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
They weren't gonna get one, and God only knows what
they were gonna do, but they got one. And it
was a trade that on the surface wasn't really costly.
When that player then wanted to leave, it became costly
for the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
The Deshaun trade in twenty seventeen rocked the foundation. We
discussed it here now.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
The next trade twenty seventeen, trading for Deshaun Watson in
the draft and basically you traded away your twenty eighteen
first rounder to move up thirteen spots.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
To take DeShawn. I loved the deal. I remember that.
I was very happy with it. I'm shock about it.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
You walk back up on stage, I'm like, we just
traded up, and you looked at me and went, oh Shawn.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
I was like, Sean, it's gonna be this, my boy,
and time. What was also notable was that they went
all in on Brock the year before. It did not work.
But they win nine and they go nine and seven,
they win a playoff game, great, but it's not going
to work with Brock. They were able to bail out
a Brock after one year, which seemed unfathomabout.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
That's crazy.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
And then right away Rick Smith steps up and says,
let's go get another quarterback right here and get Watson.
That was highly aggressive, mister McNair was.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
He knew it. Gotta go get the quarterback. So all right,
you tried with Brock.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
It didn't work. Number one guy in the market, but
it didn't work. Let's go get Watson and it worked
for a while. It worked really well for a while.
Somebody was running a highlight reel of all the best
plays in Texans history, and you know, the Watson era
came up, and people forget how great he was here
and last year whatever I was looking at in Cleveland
was not the same guy.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
So clearly things have changed for him. But for a
time here it was really special. It really was special.
So okay, things in twenty twenty one go south.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Then you have the next two trades that have set
the Texans on their course where they are now.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
It's not the only thing.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
But of these two trades, which one you think had
the bigger impact may maybe we already know what it is.
Deshaun gets traded out of Houston, get three first round
picks and multiple others that turn into Will Anderson Junior,
tanked Dell Damian Pearce et cetera.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Or the will Anderson trade.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
That included and people forget this, it included Kaylen Bullock,
will Anderson Junior and Kaylen Bullock for what turned into
the Cardinals Paris Johnson, Garrett Williams, Darius Robinson, which was
twelve thirty four next year's first in twenty twenty three.
Which one Is it just the volume of the Watson
picks that makes it the most significant of the two,
(27:30):
or what do you think?
Speaker 1 (27:32):
I want to say they're both related?
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Obviously, Yeah, like you said, the Watson deal was a
great trade by Nickosario. They went through a lot of
pain holding him on the fifty three man roster through
twenty twenty one.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Just excruciating.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Oh this day about that, the days we would walk
in and see him wearing Balenciaga as the teen's practicing.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
He's just trapesing in you know, wharing is.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
He did not look up once when he was in
the building. You'd see him walk through the hall just
looking at his phone, and it was awkward for everybody. Okay,
it was awkward for everybody that year, but the Texans
suffered through it got.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
A big hall. Yep.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
So Nick orchestrated that beautifully. In many that really is
the greatest trade this franchise made. But it had to
be good. There was a minimal level of acceptance. You
had to get three ones, and he stuck to it
and got him. I think that Will Anderson deals the one, though, Johnny,
because the excitement level. Yeah, the way it happened right
(28:33):
after picking j Stroud, the fact that Will instantly turns
into defensive rookie of the year, that follows that up
with a double digit SAX season, and who knows where
he goes from here in year three and beyond. There's
just something about that move where, all right, we're not
just gonna develop a quarterback and get better. We are
going to accelerate the growth of the franchise. We're gonna
(28:54):
throw gasoline on that fire. We're gonna take the lighter
fluid on the hibachi, just spray it by moving up
and getting Will Anderson Junior and Bam win the division,
make the playoffs, win a playoff game, and be tied
with Baltimore in the divisional round at the break, My goodness,
after the year before, you were flamed, I mean you
were flaming out at three wins and one of them
(29:17):
with Davis Mills on fourth and forever, are you serious?
And the year before you were that, I didn't even
want the year before you were that, And now you're
ten ten at Baltimore at that half, and I know
the second half did not go according to plan, but
that's an incredible turnaround of events. And Will Anderson that
trade is a big part of it.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
I wrote down some Rockets trades, and I actually wrote
down a transaction that might have been as important as
any of them over the years.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
It flies under the radar, get to you a little bit.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
So October twenty twelve, Texas are having a good start
to the season and then all of a sudden, Drril
Mory says.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
All right, take a second examine this trade.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
The Rockets sent Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and draft considerations
to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Cole aldrich Day, Kwon Cook,
Lazarre Hayward and James Harden.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Huge deal, obviously the greatest till now. But I think
even I don't know where this ends up. Obviously nobody knows, right,
But that's can I call it the greatest trade?
Speaker 1 (30:23):
I don't know? I don't have all the rockets trades.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
In front of me, but that was incredible when he
brought this thing from and look, Kevin Martin, I liked
him and everything he wants, you know, spent some time
with my kid on a birthday party.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
But essentially you've got James Harden for really nothing. I'm
gaming opportunity. I mean, look, we turned into I want.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
To talk about accelerating the growth of a franchise if
it were for Golden State whatever. But they go to
the Western Conference Finals what twice with James Harden.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
That was a huge trait.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
I know a lot how a lot of people feel
about Harden right now, but right gosh, those who are
some really special nights.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
You had a Toyota Centers. You were at Conference finals night,
I mean hard was m v P.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Yeah, I mean I love I didn't love his style
of play, but it revolved around Harden here in Houston
for a years.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
What has Moriy done since then?
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Yeah, that that has been as impressive it which is
difficult to be as impressive as that. He built this
thing into a contender out of thin air. It seemed
so give him a ton of credit.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
They got out of them a Grady Yao era beautifully
into that.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
And it took you know, it wasn't right away, but
they got into that. It got just really impressive.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
So then obviously there's Kevin Duranteal we talked about. But
in two thousand and four the Rockets traded Steve Francis,
Katino Mobley, Kelvin Cato, three high priced guys had produced
a ton for Juwan Howard Tyrone, lou Reese Gaines, and
Tracy McGrady.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
I forgot those guys were part of that.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Yeah, and Reese Gaines and t mac for Stevie franchise,
kat Mobley and Kelvin Cato.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
You can't imagine how big it was to get that
was massive to get McGrady. They had a press conference
on the floor of Toyota Center. It was huge, huge,
and McGrady that was a bigger acquisition than Harden on
the day off of the day, I mean, McGrady was
already scoring champ right, and he shows up here and
(32:29):
you got McGrady and yow, this is gonna be humongous yet.
And what was a recent podcast or something I was
reading something where McGrady said, if he was teamed up
with Shaq. They would have won multiple titles, just like
Kobe and Shack did. I'm thinking you had yow. Yeah,
you had a two zero lead on Dallas coming home.
And I love McGrady. I do McGrady regular season McGrady.
(32:52):
Oh my gosh, so entertaining, incredible. But yeah, that was
an amazing deal. But it didn't work. They didn't get
out of the first round until but Grady actually got
hurt that at our test and they finally got the
first round and oh nine, that's right.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
So then James Harden gets dealt out of Houston, and
to me, this is the Deshaun Watson deal for them.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
They got three players back.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
They got Victor Oladipo, Dante Exum, and Rodeons Curriics. Okay,
I don't know who any of those. I mean, I
know who three are. Well, I don't know the last two.
But they also got three unprotected first round picks, four
first round pick swaps. Then they turned around and dealt
the picks back to Brooklyn for the rights to swap
picks with Phoenix in twenty five, the Sun's twenty twenty
(33:35):
seven first round pick, and the right to the more
favorable of Dallas Phoenix Houston round first round picks in
twenty twenty nine, so that's probably gonna be Phoenix. So
I think those two deals in combination where Raphael Stones says, Okay,
James Harden's got to get out of here. We're gonna
go through it. We're gonna go through We're gonna have
some tough years. We don't have our we don't have
(33:56):
our guys impressive, and those were some tough years. But
they pile up the assets in that trade, and you know,
drafted Jalen Green, they drafted Jabari Smith, Shingoon, they draft,
they draft Taris. You really got a good job drafting,
draft reed Shepherd last year when they got the lottery
pick and moved up, so they they've done a good
job draft. But that that moving James disgruntled wants out. Okay, guys, disgruntled,
(34:23):
how much are you really.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Going to get back into trade?
Speaker 3 (34:26):
You got back a boatload and you rebuilt a franchise.
You built a never mind durrant. You got a two
seed last year. I know you flamed out the playoffs,
but you got a two seed. You rebuilt a franchise,
You won a lot of games, You got a great coach,
and it's a completely different regime than the Moury era
doing this, the Mory cd era before Maury doing this.
(34:50):
That's impressive. How many franchises can really pull that off?
Not too many. Now Oklahoma City's over there saying, hey,
what was it two three years ago? We won twenty
something games, and now we won the championship. But easier
said than done.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
Very much.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
So now the deal the Rockets made in nineteen ninety
four is won a lot of people forget the Rockets
traded Robert Orri and Matt Bullard to the Pistons for
Shawn Elliott. Yeah, but the trade was denied because the
Houston doctors discovered a kidney condition of Shawn Elliott. So
(35:25):
the trade is wiped out. Robert Ory and Matt Bowley
go back to the Rockets. Or is incredible for the
next couple of years as part of two championship teams.
Big Shot Bob kind of gets it together after he
is threatening to be traded out all the right way,
saying Owler ends.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Up doing an hour of radio a week with me.
That's six exactly right.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
And if he goes to Detroit, he's probably doing it
on the ticket in ninety seven to one.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
So that was a deal that didn't that didn't take all.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Right, here are three Astros trades I came up with
that I found that I remembered. I think this was
nineteen eighty nine because see I was going to my
senior year high school, and I remember the Astros had
a picture by the name of Larry Anderson.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Right, he ends up Boston Red Sox needs a starter.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
They're in the They're in the They're in the mix for.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
The ale Pennaest one.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
There's no other Astros trade that can rival this, Right, well,
I got two others you might want to listen to.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
So we finished this one.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Harry Anderson gets traded to the Boston Red Sox for
some third base playing minor leaguer and named Jeff Bagwell
and everybody, I mean within five you know, Bagwell's in
the MVP conversation in ninety four, I think I think
it was four or five years after that deal. It's like,
uh yeah, I think Larry Anderson was on baseball at
that time. This one goes right near the very top.
(36:42):
But there are two others that are under consideration. One
that it's very very similar that happened in twenty sixteen.
August of twenty sixteen, Now the Dodgers need a relief pitcher,
and they call the Astros and say we want Josh
Fields and just call back and say, well, give us
Jordon Alvarez. Jordon Alvarez gets traded for Josh Fields.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
Okay, so I know championship.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
We're talking about championship here with Alvarez, right, if the
if his career ends today, is he going to Cooper's town?
Speaker 1 (37:18):
No?
Speaker 3 (37:19):
No, no, give I mean bagwell, longevity, longevity. Postseason really
wasn't his thing, and they went a few times, but
Alvarez postseason, I mean, come on, yeah, it was Barry
Bond's like, like, what are you doing pitching to him?
Speaker 1 (37:34):
Are you crazy? Exactly? Boom, That's what we got to
Jordan Alvas.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
I think if Jordon strings together another five to seven years,
maybe they're in a mix for championship and one another one.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
I mean, you're gonna look at both of those similarly.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
The third one I don't think is as it's as important,
but not like the others. August thirty first, twenty seventeen,
the Astros deal for Justin Verlin. The Tigers received I'll
tell me. If you've heard of any of these guys, Franklin, Perez,
(38:07):
Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
Okay, that's a monumental deal as well. You could argue
they don't win it without them, obviously, right, And I
even think that in twenty twenty two you could argue
the same thing.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
Because they were kind of.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
You know, it was they were gonna make the postseason,
but were they going to be them?
Speaker 1 (38:32):
Were they going to have that edge?
Speaker 3 (38:33):
What he met in the clubhouse, all of that for
that staff, his mere presence, Johnny. Yes, baseball's big with
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
That's why you look at some of these trades and
you're like, man, yes you get the player, but you
get the leader, the captain, the face of the franchise,
if you will. Those Astros trades, and they are probably
something that I've missed. I mean, it shows you that
the trades are all different in a sense that you know,
NFL trades, you know a lot of draft picks are involved,
(39:05):
and those can turn into other things. You don't really
you're not gonna do a bunch of draft picks in baseball,
you know, basketball, you might have some pick swaps and
some kind of crazy things that come out of the
NBA CBA with those trades. But when you look at
the the trades that kind of that brought something to
the Rockets in some way, shape or form, Like that
(39:26):
big Harden deal. It's like four guys from the Thunder
including Harden. It was like three or four guys from
the Rockets going the other direction, and none of them
were any good except for the.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Guy that turned into be the MVP and James Harden.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
These it's amazing to look at how the franchisees in
the city have used trades in some respect to I mean,
what the Astros. Deb Bagwell comes here and he ends
up kind of setting off that era they traded for
Larry Anderson.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
I mean at that point a guy that was. They
still talk about that in Boston, but I mean really
because Bagwell's in New Englander. Yeah, that's true.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
What's the first trade in Texans history? Do you remember
this one? The first trade in Texans systems? A Heisman
Trophy winner quarterback Danny wirfol really, yeah, goes to Washington.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Oh wanted him. A Spurrier wanted him. Spurrier wanted him.
Oh my god, he was That was the first trade.
That was the first trade. Wow? About what year was
that two? Two?
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Yea, yeah, because I remember worfol was part of the
Washington I'm doing.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
I'm thinking Worful ninety six. That's why I was thinking.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
Okay, Yeah, the first trade was Danny Wirfole to Washington.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Yeah, what did we get back? And when we get
in return?
Speaker 3 (40:36):
Jerry DeLoach played on the old line. Yeah, you know
it was not a well regarded old line. Right, you're
one for Chester other than you, yeah, and Jimmy Herndon
other than you.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
Am I missing anybody?
Speaker 3 (40:48):
Sorry? Sorry guys, oh mckennie, of course. Yeah, it worked
out for everybody. Danny worfl wanted to be back, and
you guys can always say you beat Dallas. You know,
it's funny those guys they won four games, they beat
two playoff teams that year, but they beat Dallas opening night,
and that is the one.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
You know, it's creaz.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
It's we're almost twenty three years, twenty three years to
the date of that game. Mark I know, it feels
like it was just yesterday in some sense, twenty three.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
Years marking on the twenty fourth season in franchise history.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
How about that, Well just started, you warmed. You know,
only twelve of them count. So the ones with you
I got exactly those are the ones that count. All right,
we get back.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
We'll go around the NFL with all the news you
need to know. Apparently the Jaguars signed two players this
weekend with the same name or is the same guy
with two different positions. Well, it confused Jaguars fans. We'll
get into that next. On Texans All Access. We go
on final segments Monday editsue of Texans All Access from.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
The Hundai Texans radio studio. I'm your host, John.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Harris, football analyst, sideline reporter for your Houston Texans. Let's
go round the NFL and the first story is a
teased earlier. Travis Hunter signed his contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now,
apparently when this news was reported, the Jaguars put a
(42:16):
two different tweets posts whatever you wanna call it, one
saying they signed wide receiver Travis Hunter, one saying this
signed cornerback Travis Hunter. People didn't see both. They just
wanted freaked out. But contract is all signed. He is
all good to go. He is the thirtieth of the
first round picks to sign Schmar Stewart and the Bengals.
(42:39):
That could be a while if at all, he might
just go to the draft next year. Jday Baron has
still not signed his deal with the Denver Broncos. So
Hunter gets thirty point six million dollars in a signing bonus,
got it all up front, and he will be ready
(43:00):
to go for training camp.
Speaker 1 (43:02):
I'm glad we get to see him twice.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
It's gonna be interesting to see him play against what
the Texans actually have. All right, there's been a lot
of soccer talk lately because there's a ton of soccer
going on this summer. You've got fiefa World Cup, Club
World Cup, You've got Gold Cup going on July sixth,
the final here at Energy Stadium, and now you've got
the Jets getting involved. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson
(43:28):
will finally get his hands on an English soccer team.
Premier League side Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Woody
Johnson has signed a quote unquote legally binding contract to
buy the shares of fellow American John Texter, who has
a forty three percent stake in a London club that
puts the price taget somewhere between two under and twenty
two undred and sixty million that Johnson is putting down
(43:50):
for Premier League, Crystal Palace sale of Texter Shares. Boost
Palace soap playing in the Europa League next season, qualified
thanks to its FA Cup final victory over my crew
Man City last month. So whatdye Johnson now forty three
percent owner of Crystal Palace.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
We'll see what else he is able to.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Do down the road to maybe take over Crystal Palace
and good luck to them. Anthony Richardson expected to be
ready for training camp in July after going down and
seeing doctors getting evaluations. Richardson did interview with twenty four
(44:35):
to seven sports Zach Goodall on Sunday and he said,
in that quote, I'm all good. Not really even a
bump in the road. I felt like I tripped, I fell,
just got back up and hit the ground running again.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
I guess he's trying to downplay it a little bit,
and I get it, but they're holding.
Speaker 1 (44:57):
Him out of practices.
Speaker 2 (44:58):
There was something there, especially when Shane's tykeens standing up
there going yeah, it's not great, but it does look
like Richardson will be ready for a training camp.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
Now.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
I don't think a week or two I would imagine
in OTA's mini camp enough for Daniel Jones to take
the job completely away from Anthony Richardson. But if this
thing continues to be an issue, because it has continued
to be an issue, then Daniel Jones will end up
having that job down the road. But as of now,
(45:31):
Anthony Richardson is back with the Colts, or we'll be
back for training camp. Russell Wilson over the weekend, I
think this was that fanatics fest that sounded like a
pretty cool event. By the way, Yeah, it was a
fanatics fest. He was asked during an interview, I came
here because of him.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Who is him? Malik Neighbors.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Last year, Neighbors twelve hundred yards stud receiver. We saw
in the preseason game. He made a couple of beautiful
catches in that game. Now he's got Russell Wilson throwing
the ball. Wilson said, and I quote, I came here
because of him. I really wanted to play with someone
who is special like him. I'm assuming that's gotta be
music to the years of Malik Neighbors. If I'm so special, bro,
(46:19):
why aren't you throw me the ball on third and nine? Well,
that's because teams are gonna take him away and force
Wilson to go somewhere else. But find interesting that Russell Wilson,
and look, you go to New York or to a
New York team for a number of reasons. I can
imagine Leak Neighbors would definitely ben one of those guys
if I get to throw to him. Yeah, he's gonna
(46:39):
make me look good. Hell yeah, he's gonna make me
look good. So you've got Russell Wilson moving to the
Giants or going to the Giants to play with Malik Neighbors.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
He's very, very excited about that.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
Jane Daniels was also at Fanatics Fest and he was
asked about having Deebo Samuel Jay Daniels said, I'm excited
to throw him Deebo a little screen hopefully on the
statue it says a touchdown for eighty yards and I
didn't have to do any of the work. Yeah, that's
what everybody wants from Debo. But we'll see if Debo
is gonna be at his max level or if they
(47:15):
just starting to catch up with him a little bit.
That I think is what the forty ninnders thought. And
he's a little fatter, he's not in shape as much.
We don't think he's quite the player he was, so
we'll see. It's been a while since he's had a
great season, going all the way back to twenty twenty one.
But in Washington we got Cliff Kingsbury and now you
got Jay Daniels and a much other weapons. We'll see,
(47:36):
especially if Terry McLaurin is not ready to roll, boy,
it could get very very interesting there in the nation's capital.
Big thanks to you guys for listening tonight. Oh my
guys back at six' ten To, mark to all the
