Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's going on? Everybody.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome into Wednesday edition of Texans All Access from the
Hooday at Texans Radio Studio.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
I'm your host, John.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Harris, Football Finals sideline reporter for Your Houston Texas.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
So glad to be with you. We've got plenty to
do and to.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Discuss a lot of news of the day type things happening.
One in particular that we will discuss a little later.
But we got to kick off the show on a Wednesday,
as we always do now. We talked with Nick Cassario, Executi,
vice President, general manager of Your Houston Texans. We always
talk with him on Tuesday, but we always played the

(00:35):
interview on Wednesday, so we didn't get into the.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I guess official announcement about CJ.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Strapp, but we did ask him about Davis Mills with
the thought that CJ probably wasn't gonna play seven days
after suffering a concussion.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
I don't know that I've ever seen anybody.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
In a Texas uniform get a concussion on a Sunday
and then play the following Sunday.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
But I don't know.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Maybe it's happening, I just can't remember it. It won't
happen for CJ.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Stroud.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
He is going to be out of this game on
Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but we're still gonna kick
off the show with our guy, executive.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Vice president general manager Nick Cassio right here joining us
in studio.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
It's executive vice president and general manager Nick Cassario.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Nick, great to see you.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Fella's get to be here.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Jacksonville Week, Big week.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Indeed, let's review a little bit what went down against
the Broncos. Very close game but unfortunately unable to get
over the ump.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Nick.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
Yeah, similar to some of the other games we've been in,
you know, hit a couple of games literally have come
down to last play of the game. And you know,
it was a case here the other day against Denver.
So had some opportunities in the end, just the red
zone and some of the inability to kind of and
Johnny and I talked about this before the game that
was going to kind of be the key to the game.
So had some ops, couldn't necessarily capitalize on those opportunities,

(01:47):
and in the end came up a little bit short.
So it did some decent things. You know, lost some
players during the course of the game, but still had
our chances. So in the end is going to come
down to kind of our basic fundamentals and execution. If
we can just do some of the basics a little
bit better, probably give ourselves a little bitter opportunity to
finish the games.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Nick, when you and I started that, I used to
ask you about the keys that us say, Hey, give
me keys on both sides of the ball, and I
started thinking, you know what, we're really good on special teams.
I better asked third key, you know, the third phase.
And the third phase was really good. We covered the
muff punt, got the block kick, almost had them pinned
at the one, very very close to that. Special teams
continue to be great, and they gave you a lot
the other day that seemed to be a big win

(02:24):
for the special teams.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
Yeah for sure.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
I mean Jy Noles continued to provide and smart during
a return game. And you know, Denko has kind of
done what he's done throughout the course of his career.
So the kicking game is really about hitting the yardage,
trying to create additional plays. Can you create a first
first down with a punt return? Can you create an
explosive play in some other capacity? Can can control field position. Say,
Denver did a pretty good job as well. There punt
did a good job of flipping a field and some

(02:47):
situations kind of forcing us to go on a longer field.
So for the most part, we played pretty consistent the
kicking game. So it's a combination of the players coaching,
the right mindset and kind of you know, when you
go out in the field, you understand what the job entails.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
So for the most part, we've done a pretty good job.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
To your point in that pace, Nick CJ had to
leave the game obviously, and they did throw a flag
then they picked it up. A long explanation to demic goo.
Has that rule kind of changed evolved a little bit.
We saw something with disease last year at Jacksonville. Has
it changed a little bit, Yeah, it has.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
It's evolved.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
There's certain plays that you can review, there's replay assists
that's involved. So there's been a big topic of discussion
in a lot of the league meetings just trying to
figure out what's reviewable what's not. In the end, you're
just trying to get the play right and if there's
a foul, If there's an infraction, so be it. If
there's not, you know, should a team be penalized if
there's not infraction. So we understand there's a subjective nature

(03:40):
sometimes to some of the calls, but in the end,
you're just trying to get it right, and so there's
maybe a few more people involved, and when they talk
about it goes to replay assists. We had the opportunity
to replay assist and then they come to the conclusion
whatever it is. So whatever the outcome is, whatever the
result is, we'll just handle and deal with it accordingly.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Nick I thought about this last night. I was kind
of flipping through social and I saw somebody make a
post about, hey, here's another team running sixth offensive six
offensive lineman, as if it's kind of become a little
bit more of a trend in the league. And we
we've been doing it and it's been successful. Obviously the
other day it's got to be short circuited because Titus
goes out and Bike has to go in. But what's

(04:17):
been the success of that sixth offensive lineman role for
Blake and just using it all together?

Speaker 5 (04:23):
Yeah, I'd say league wide, it's your whoever that extra
player is, is it the third tight end or you
have somebody that position, get the analy of responsibility or
are you better, sir, putting an offensive lineman in that spot.
A lot of times you're blocking the same individual that'd
be blocking is if you were one spot or moved over.
You're also seeing some players use defensive players or defensive tackle,

(04:44):
so you're trying to get some size, some strength to
create a little bit of a point of attack advantage
if you can so some of its matchup base. Some
of it's if you put this grouping on the field,
here's what the opposing team is going to do offensively
or defensively from a match standpoint.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
So so you know, Blake's done a pretty good job
with that.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
And to your point, Johnny, league wide, more and more
people are using that player and that role, so it's
maybe you take one less tight. You get eight linemen
at the game every week, so if you have an
extra player, how to utilize that player's services to get
the most out of who's at the game.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
So I'm gonna go that real quick mark the offensive
lineman the other day. So at one point Titus has
gone down, then Ed has gone down, and or for
a little bit, and Ed went back into the game,
and I think we were down to I think six
offensive linemen at that particular point, Like you said, you
can carry eight to the game, how far do you
go down the rabbit hole of if if, if this happens,

(05:40):
to have a plan just in case, oh man, all
of a sudden, we've got five offensive lineman.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
What if something happens.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
Yeah, that's kind of a last resort, right, kind of
ultimate catastrophe. But you have eight, so you're really gonna
have you know, the next inside player, the next tackle,
and then if you lose one of them, okay, what
is your option? You have to move somebody from inside outside,
You move somebody outside in. So at one point we
were down there with j Pat was kind of the
only lineman that was available, and then Ed went back

(06:08):
into the game.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
So you kind of manage as you go.

Speaker 5 (06:11):
You just want the information who's available, and then once
you have the information at your disposal, then you can
figure out, all right, what's the best way for us
to line up and play. And we had games where
we were playing centers at tackle. I justtinkly remember a
game against the Giants we had our starting center was
playing right tackle and then we're playing the third tackle
at left tackle, So you just got to figure out

(06:31):
a way to make it work. I think this will
be a good test, honestly for both teams dealing with
some injuries that they incurred in the course of the game.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
So this is what you have the practice squad for.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
This is why you hopefully have enough depth on your
team so the games go on. It's not like we
can cancel the games. So we're just going to try
to figure out who's available, who's going to be healthy,
and then put those players in the position to go out.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
There and perform to the best of their ability on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
If it comes down to that again, I nominated Niko
Autry to switch over.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
I mean, would he be.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
The best tackled to Nico Austrey the best defensive line.
I'm into switch over.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Sometimes some defensive tackles they've played tackles or they've played inside.
So if we get to that point, we'll have to
figure out who that player.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Is exactly, all right, So, Nick concussion protocol, we saw
Nico go through it. You have a couple of players
on it now, most notably your quarterback Titus Howard. Tell
us about the concussion protocol, how that works. They're tested
on a certain day and they have to overcome certain
thresholds or whatever.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Yeah, there are certain steps within the process and you
have to clear all five of them before you're declared
through the concussion Protocol. There's a physical component, a physical activity,
and then there's a contact component, you know, which you
get in practice, I mean, which you get in pads
or if you're not wearing pads, you kind of have
to simulate that. But I would say the least done

(07:44):
a good job of implementing something that every team can follow.
And I would say from our perspective, the health and
safety of the players is the most important thing. So
we're not going to erase a player through the Concussion
Protocol if they're not ready for it. So, because in
the end you want to you're dealing with something I
would say that is very very you know, sensitive, So
we just want to make sure we're doing the right
thing by the players, so that they have to go

(08:05):
through certain checkpoints. There's computerized tests, there's physical activity, there's
a contact component, and then they have to go out
there and do it over a course of practice. And
then once they get through that, then if they're clear,
they're cleared. If they're not, they're not, then they just
kick it to the next week. So depending on the
severity of the injury and the nature of the injury,

(08:26):
that'll determine how long the player is going to be out.
You know, which the league has done a good job of,
whether it's new helmets and the technology is involved in
the helmets or the hats that we wear, in the
Guardian caps that we wear in practice, there's a heightened
emphasis and the heightened awareness because in the end, the
health and safety of the players is the most important thing.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Have you ever had a concussion?

Speaker 4 (08:48):
The only one that I.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
Really remember is when I was playing middle school baseball.
I'll distinctly remember it. I was playing center field and
I was going to the gap at full speed and
the left fielder were collided and I literally was out.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
I was out for multiple minutes.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
And then I got up and I probably shouldn't have
gone back in the game, but hard headed, so I
remember standing at the plate and trying to focus on
a picture and it was pretty blurry.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Honestly, I shouldn't have been out there.

Speaker 5 (09:19):
So, I mean, I think my father thought I was
an idiot for doing what I wanted to do, but
I mean, I was pretty rockhead.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Well he wanted to err on the cautious side.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
So but I'm like, no, I'm good. I'm good. I'm good.
But that was the only one that I remember.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
I mean, I had my jaw slightly fractured when I
was playing, but I didn't get knocked out. But other
than that, I've been pretty fortunate relative to that situation.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
Harri's the seniors yelling at me, get up, you're good.
I'm like, I see four people and there's only one there.
I'm pretty sure at that point.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
If CJ cannot go on Sunday, and Demiko mentioned the
other day he said, rarely has somebody got a concussion
and then come back to fong Sunday. But if he's
not able to go, Nick your thoughts about Davis mill
stepping into that role and the responsibility he says he's
going to have against Jacksonville.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yeah, the quarterbacks each week prepares as if they're going
to play, So I mean Davis goes through that process
each week.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
Graham is going through that process as well.

Speaker 5 (10:13):
So if CJ can't go, then there's a good chance
that Davis is going to play Davis to play a
lot of football, has familiarity with the system, has a
lot of experience. Anytime, if you're had the opportunity to
get kind of a full week of practice, full week
of preparation, it certainly, you know, makes a difference. Davis
works hard as a smart kid, and he's going out
there and played competitive football, you know, as long as
he's been here. So walk through the course of the

(10:35):
week and try to figure out, you know, what makes
the most sense. But you know CJ can't play, and
I'm sure Davis and Graham will be prepared and try
to take advantage of the opportunity.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Davis has been through a lot because Tim Kelly, Pep Hamilton,
of course Bobby and now Nick Kelly. How different is
this now from what Davis was running with Tim Kelly
say in twenty twenty one.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
There's probably a little bit of crossover relative to We've
talked about this relative to system. So there's some are
going to some concepts are going to carry over, some
principles are gonna carry over. You might have something that
is more specific to one system relative to another. Davis's situation,
he's seen a lot of i'd say offense and he's
a smart kid, and he's able to adapt and adjust,

(11:15):
and we probably have carried different elements throughout the.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Years that he's been here. You know that I've been here.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
So in the end, you're trying to figure out who's
the opponent, what do we need to do, what are
some of the things that are going to have application
to Jacksonville, and then construct the plan accordingly.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
All right, this is Jacksonville, so it's getting this scount
of report.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
But Nick, I watched you to focus on a couple
of things Earlier today we found out Jacksonville traded for
Jacobe Myers, who I know you have some history with. Secondly,
they made a trade a few weeks ago where Tyson
Campbell went to the Browns and they brought back in
Greg Newso, so with those two in particular, how does
Myers kind of help their receiver room, How does and
how has Newsome kind of fit in into their secondary

(11:56):
because he can play Nicoli can play outside. Is a
little different than Tyson, and they give us a scouty
reporter to jackson Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Specific to Jacoby, Jacoby's a.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
Very He's been a very productive, very instinctive receiver, a
little bit more inside the formation, but he can play
on the perimeter as well. He's got good quickness, he's
got really good hands. He's a smart kid, he's tough,
and he's he's as his career has progressed, he's improved.
He played as an undrafted rookie. I had to play
a lot of snaps there, you know, when he came
out in a draft. But Jacoby's done a good job

(12:26):
of his opportunities. So just given some of the injuries
they have sustained, I would say it's just specific to
their offense. I mean, Washington Parker has kind of emerged
and his role has kind of become more pronounced as
the year is going on. You know, Brian Thomas is
a very productive player for them. So they've kind of
had some players that have been in and out. They've
had some injuries, Tami's been in and out. But I'm

(12:46):
sure Jacoby is gonna probably help their offense quite a
bit here. And then specific to Newsome, you know, when
he was in Cleveland, to your point, Johnny, he kind
of played a little bit more inside the formation on
the perimeter because they had Emerson, they had Denzel Ward.
But the times he had to play in a perimeter
the formation, he was able to go out there and
be competitive.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
It looks like he's.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
Playing primarily on the perimeter in Jacksonville, so they've made
some changes, so he's kind of been on the perimeter.
Travis has kind of been a noun. Now Travis is
on IR, but looks like he's playing mostly on the perimeter.
I would say the Jags specifically looking at their team
more big picture. Defensively, they're one of the better run
defense in the league. I think they're third in the
league at run defense. So big, strong front, really good

(13:27):
edge player and heinz allen Ola Khan is among the
most productive tacklers in the league. So really formidable front.
And they've kind of had a lot of players in
and out of the secondary for injuries or trades. If
everybody is healthy, Jordan Lewis really gives them a solid
presence inside the formation at Nickel. You know, he had
the interception in our game, and they've kind of had

(13:48):
some rotating pieces there at safety. They just put Eric
Murray on IR. But in the end, good front, really
good run defense, good edge rusher, and they've taken the
ball away. I think they're tied for third league and
turnover margin, which unfortunately they took them all away from
us three times in a first game. And offensively, their
run game has been a big part of what they're doing,

(14:09):
and I'd say Trevor's played really clean, efficient football and
the one thing that he's probably taken advantage over the
last few weeks he's had a number of rushing touchdowns.
So he's a factor in the RhE area because he
is big, strong, and he can make plays with his
legs and they've been able to capitalize on that. And
then specifically, they're specialists. They arguably have three of the
best specialists in the league. I mean Cam Little made

(14:30):
a kick from sixty eight yards with room to spare.
Logan Cook's one of the best punters in the league,
Matti six one of the best long snappers. So they
have a good specialist group and a good core coverage group.
I would say the lane kid from Navy really stands
out on a perimeter and we couldn't really block him
as a gunner. So they present challenges as a team
and are five and three for a reason because they've

(14:50):
played good football and they've been in some close games
and some of them won, some of them they haven't.
But you know, overall, Liams done a good job of
kind of putting a program in place and putting them
in a position where they're competing every week.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
Nick, It's bizarre to think that if you get to
the fifty, you could be in scoring range here with
that record field goal and Jacksonville hit it. Dallas tried
one Monday Night football and we talked about this with
the touch back at the thirty five field position is
just crazier than ever scoring range and starting drive position.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
It's really that fifty to the thirty five, like that area. Okay,
what goes on? Some teams are equipped to handle long
field goals. Some teams are more inclined to go forward
on fourth down. So what's the risk reward? What's that
trade off? That's something that you're going to look at.
Let'd say, specific to Jacksonville, obviously, field goal range probably
extensivetle bit further out than some other teams, so it
could affect their calculus, it could affect our calculus on

(15:40):
the other side of the ball. So those are all
things that we're gonna have to value and look at
as we as we get into the game planning element.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Nick I thought something was interesting.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
I think it was a couple of weeks ago there
Greg Olsen, who does a great job on Fox, he
was talking about what he thought would be a trend
with the new kickoff rule, and he related it to
kicking field goals, especially in the low red zone. You
get down a low red zone inside the ten, that
more teams might go for touchdowns there and to skew
the fuel goal because they feel like they kick a
fuel goal, they knick get off to the other team.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
They get the ball.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
At to thirty five, all of a sudden, one big
dig route in your field goal range and the fields
will kind of cancel each other out.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
You think that's a possibility.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
I mean, you kind of talked about that, the decisions
you have to make from thirty five to fifty, But
are some of those also in the low red zone.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
That you have to make two for that particular reason.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
It's always going to be case by case, always going
to be team by a team, and you're just gonna
have to look at what's your strategy, how do you
want to handle that situation? And you're and I think
teams are still working through some of the mechanics and
the nuances. I was reading a stat the other day.
I think there have been seventy nine or eighty percent
kickoff returns, which is amongst the highest. And however many
years so the league wanted more kickoff returns. So you're

(16:46):
getting more kickoff returns. So how do you handle some
of those other situations? How does that affect your decision making?
I think as we get to the end of the year,
every team's probably gonna do whatever they feel fits their
team best.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
Along those lines we kick off returns.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I was thinking about this the other day because there
are that many more kickoff returns.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
Are you seeing more and more teams. I don't want
to say be creative with.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
What they do with a blocking scheme, but I know
when this first talk came out, Mark and I talked
about all different things you could do. You know you
could you could zone scheme a kickoff return because of
the way the blocking is set up.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Have you see more teams kind of be creative in
that way.

Speaker 5 (17:21):
Any end the kickoff returns to kind of become a
one on one matchup between the coverage unit and the
return unit because you're in such a condensed space. Essentially
you're five yards apart from one another. So how much
is there first scheme? I mean you'll see some double teams,
probably the extent of it. Maybe if there's a specific
coverage player that you're trying to account for, you can
get to the double a little bit quicker. As far

(17:43):
as scheme outside of that, there's some nuances that are involved.
You could create space in the covers unit, and then
if it covers units on top of you, then if
you can't get the guy blocked, then you're getting the ball.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Inside of twenty.

Speaker 5 (17:55):
So I think this is like everything, it's a process
and everybody's going to kind of look at what makes
the most sense. I think the subtle adjustment they made
where you have the ability to kind of have that
third player a little bit further back relative to last year,
So how do you use that? That probably gives you
more flexibility than anything else.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Nick and the Jags win over the Raiders. It went
to overtime. Liam Kohane had the option to put the
Raiders on the field first, but he took the ball
with the ten minute period. He cited, well, maybe we
want to grind out the clock here. Raiders did get
the ball back. But your thoughts on that, do you
guys discuss these things, philosophy, that sort of thing.

Speaker 5 (18:30):
Yeah, there's a strategy that goes into it, and each
week you're kind of look at it and just understanding
what is the other team for pensity to what do
they want to do in those particular situations, And then
you look at your team, what do we want to do?
How do you want to handle it? So it's the
same thing. Do you defer the kickoff? Do you take
the ball? What goes into that? So everybody has a
philosophy that they espouse. In the end, you're going to

(18:52):
do what you feel is best for your team.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Without Devin Lloyd, it doesn't feel like they've had too
much of a drop off because Ventro Miller. I remember
him in week four last he came in and did
a really good job against US.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
If Lloyd plays, we know what he brings.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
But if it's venture a Miller at linebacker for them,
how much changes, if anything at all?

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Yeah, they run their defense. Ventreil is a good football player.
I mean he was a fourth round picker. Wherever fourth
or fifth round pick. He was a good football player
come out of Florida, He's tough, good straight line speed,
very instinctive, highly productive. So they're almost to a degree
three for two inside. And they obviously moved on from
Muma because they felt between Devin, you know, Olacan and
Van Trell, whoever played, they would feel comfortable. So he's

(19:33):
done a good job when he's played, he's been a
productive tackler, so they didn't really have to change too
much of what they're doing defensively.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
Nick, if CJ can't go, that puts Graham Mertz in
the on deck circle. For lack of a better way
of putting it, how about his progress? You put him
on the fifty three prior to the start of the
season and he's been the third guy.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
How's he doing?

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Yeah, No, he's worked really hard.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
I mean he's getting a lot of his reps in practice,
and really what we've done is between him and Davis,
they've kind of rotated on the show team. But and
Graham's been in there. You really want to go in
there and still focus on your techniques, focus on playing quarterback.
You're doing some things that are specific to the defense.
But take the play, look at it through the lens
of the Houston Texans, because it might be because we

(20:14):
try to call the play for this skill the look
team in our vernacular. So you go through kind of
your process. Now if there's something specific to that team, Hey,
we want you to do this this way, read the
play this way, but you still want to go get
get in a huddle, call to play, get the snap count,
go through your progression.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
Graham's worked really hard.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
He's made some progress physically relative to his lower body strength,
which is a point of emphasis.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
So he's certainly working hard, making progress.

Speaker 5 (20:38):
So if the roles are adjusted or changed this week,
then you got to be prepared because whomever the backup
quarterback is essentially your one snap away from potentially being
in a game.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Okay, so we're nearly halfway through an NFL season, but
we're three quarters or more through.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
A college season.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
So at that point, Nick, are you making adjustments and
things to what you know, Hey, we got to make
sure we see these couple of guys, or hey, these guys.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Are kind of popping.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
We want to see them, you know, uh, you know, live,
get kind of a read on them live. And then
how many mock drafts are you reading at this time
of year?

Speaker 5 (21:14):
Yeah, we're winding down here, there's only so many call
the month of football that's left, we've probably seen everybody
that we need to see. Now, if a player hadn't
played because he's been injured, maybe you get to see
the player live. But we're winding down here, we're gonna
actually start maybe we're gonna tweak our process this year,
maybe start the discussion on players a little bit sooner
than we normally do. Understanding there's certain players that are

(21:36):
going to declare and be draft eligible. There's other players
that maybe they're going to declare they're gonna go back.
But we're going to try to keep the discussions moving
here a little bit. But our starts have done a
great job. We get in a lot of information on
a weekly basis. I've been fortunate enough to see a
number of games here through in the course of the year,
so it's important. I feel like it's important for me
to do the work so that we're having a discussion

(21:57):
with a group like in somewhat talk in an educated
fast so we can have productive dialogue and discourse back
and forth.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
Nick, I might have asked you this last year, but
for the sake of the audience, I'll ask again if
I did. It's Salute to Service Day. And if you
had to pick up branch of the armed services to enter,
we're gonna send you away for a few years. Navy, Army,
Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. Which one are you picking?

Speaker 4 (22:23):
It's a great question. Have you asked me this before?

Speaker 1 (22:25):
I don't know, but.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
They're gonna let it rip. They're all important, I would say.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
But which one would you want to do?

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Maybe the Navy or the Air Force?

Speaker 5 (22:34):
I would say, so fly jets if I had a lean,
So I'd have to obviously learn. So if anybody want
me behind a jed.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
Okay, we'll see how good you are on the spot.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
So if you join the Air Force and you go
to top Gun, because we know you would because that's.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
The one percent of the one percent, right, And so.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
You had Maverick and you had Viper and you had hangman,
what would be your call sign?

Speaker 4 (22:56):
Well, you guys can make it much all side. That's
not John Carroll.

Speaker 5 (23:00):
I've seen all the Top Gun movies, so I don't
see a lot of movies, watch a lot of movies.
But you fit in the top Gun. What's the John
Carroll nickname?

Speaker 1 (23:08):
The Blue Streaks, Blue Streak. That's it Blue Streak. Alright, Nick,
thanks a lot for joining us, Good luck, Thanks fellas.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Blue Streak is absolutely the perfect nickname, and that's what
he will be from now on.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Nick, Blue Streak Casario.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
All right, coming on, Max, Mark and I we'll go
into some of the things we learned at practice today
and what it might mean for Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
That's next on Texans All Access. Welcome back to.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
This Wednesday edition to Texans All Access from the Hyundai
Texans Radio studio. We had a chance to catch up
with Nick Asiio in the first segment, John Harris alongside
Mark vandermir the voice of the Texans. But we have
not gotten into the news of the day Mark, the
injury situation.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
Yeah wait, we didn't get into this.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
No, okay, we did not, all right, because we did
get into a little bit with we a little bit.
But Miko Ryans today at his presser said no CJ
on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, ruling him out already.
Although I know you're probably like me, we kind of

(24:16):
mentally already ruled him out.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
To hear it on Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Your thoughts well, last time this happened, they started case
Keenum against the Titans two years ago. And it shows
you that CJ's been durable. CJ's been out there. He's
taken some hard hits. I mean there are several hits
over the last couple of years where I thought he
might not get up right and or get up right
away and he would have some sort of injury that
would keep him out. So he's been really tough. You

(24:41):
look at his body, he's thick.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
He can take a beating, and he has taken a beating.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
But he always gets up, dusts himself off and gets
back under center and the shotgun and next play up.
But now he took a hard hit concussed and he's
gonna have to sit at least this week. We'll see
about next week. All you can do is worry about
this week. Davis Mills gets the start. We've talked about it,
twenty sixth start of his career, and this needs to

(25:07):
be a really good one. I think that you could
alibi to a degree. He hasn't played much. You know,
he played off the bench against a really tough defense.
Didn't play great, didn't play horribly either. He just didn't
make all the plays he needed to in the second half.
They went over seven on third down. So full week
of practice. Let's see if this is any better Jacksonville's defense, Johnny.

(25:30):
They a bunch of turnovers early, yes, and when they
don't get turnovers, they don't win. They tend not to win.
They're five and three. They could easily be three and five.
The Texans could easily be five and three. This is
how the NFL is.

Speaker 6 (25:41):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
This is gonna be tough to deal with. Now.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
They don't get many sacks. Josh heinz Allen only has
two sacks. But he's highly disruptive.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
So he doesn't get a sack for the interception on
the last play all ass offensive play.

Speaker 1 (25:56):
Of the game. Right, but he forces a terrible Playdy,
But what stat is you get for that? He gets
a better than as a pass? Does he get a
pass breakup?

Speaker 3 (26:04):
I don't know, but it's better than a sack. Now
he forced a pick, absolutely, you know it's it's outstanding.
He gets some pressure, talk about the pressures are often
better than the sacks forcing bad throws. And that was
a throw that CJ wants back because heines ally got
a hand.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
On him, yep.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
And he had Christian Kirk opening in the end zone. Yeah,
I mean he was thrown out to a spot right
down the middle of the field where Christian was going to be.
Now does Christian make catch point being in that first game,
in that first matchup, and this is the first time
we've been able to say this going back to a
previous matchup. It's the only it's the first time that
we're playing a division opponent twice this year. But in
that first matchup, it was so incredibly frustrating that Texans

(26:42):
could not run the ball generate offense, made a lot
of mistakes that I I don't know that they're making
all those. I think Arianta Erscheri had a tough game
that day, but I feel like Tay has played a
lot better. That's been one of the things that gets
glossed over when you don't win a game like the
one against Denver. But I think it deserves mention that

(27:04):
Mariante Ursieri kept Nick Benito from registering anything on the
stat sheet other than one tackle.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
That's pretty strong what Benito had eight sacks. Denver really
good in sacks, number one in the league, so they
did a good job there. Tied us out of practice
with the concussion. Now he might plague. They didn't roll
him out put it that way.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
He might not.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
He might. They're just gonna have to figure it out, Johnny,
because if he.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
Can't go, you don't get that sixth old lineman unless
Trent Brown.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
Does Brown he could do it. Maybe they get somebody
else to do it. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (27:36):
I lobbied Mario Edwards Junior. We're gonna hear that conversation later.

Speaker 1 (27:39):
We did not see ed Ingram at practice either. I'm
joking about Mario Editors Junior.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
By the way, I know he plays d line, but
we were thinking, can a d lyman come in and
do something for you? I mean, after all, the Ravens
have Patrick Ricard, who's a three hundred pounds fullback. You
can do a lot of things in this league, all right,
I'm just joking around here. There's no William Refrigerator Perry
walking through that door right now for the Houston Texans.

Speaker 2 (28:00):
I would think you would think, you think, but Mario
could do it. What Mario Edwards Junior on a little
bit later in the show, We asked him about that,
What would happen because you and I, obviously we talk
about this team all the time, whether we're on there
or off, and we always think about You asked me
today who would be the emergency third quarterback? Yeah, and

(28:22):
I said, throws the ball as well as anybody.

Speaker 3 (28:26):
Dingley throws the ball a lot because he is always
throwing it around with you, always chucking the ball around,
and he's a tremendous athlete. He's really smart. But I
would think it would be an offensive guy. Okay, it's
gonna be an offensive guy. That's a great question for Tamiko.
We gotta ask him this.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
He will have to have somebody ready. You gotta have
somebody ready. He will tell us. You don't think he'll
tell us. No, I wouldn't tell you. Sorry to Miko,
I wouldn't tell you.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
More likely to happen emergency third string quarterback?

Speaker 1 (28:52):
Is it Dara? It could be Dara. That would make sense.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
You know, Darry out of the shotgun could make a
lot of sense. It could make a lot of sense.
I mean, Darry's mister everything, and he probably knows the offense.
You know, you could probably draw everything up on a
on a dry erase board correct better than most of
the guys that.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
Darry would make a lot of sense. I think he
would be able to command a huddle. You could just
kind of get in single wing.

Speaker 7 (29:17):
Now.

Speaker 1 (29:17):
I don't know if Darry can throw it.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
I would be shocked if Darry can't throw it a
little bit. Darry would have been good in that Denver
game during COVID where they had no quarterback. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
And they couldn't even practice with the would be quarterback
because what did they elevate somebody from the practice squad? Rightly,
it was last moment, so you just had to go
out there on game day. Did he complete one pass?
I forget who it was playing.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
I don't think he won it was it was a
guy who played.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
It was a guy who played a little bit of
quarterback when he was in college at Wake Forest.

Speaker 1 (29:48):
And his name escapes me.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
I should notice everybody was a Bronco fan that day,
just to see if they could pull that.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
I was cheered for him as as much as you could. Uh,
this might sound odd, Dalton Schultz. You know, Dalton's gonna
go to the offense. I was thinking Dalt would make
some sense. I gotta have a great understanding of the offense.
And I bet he has a bit of an arm too.
You know, it would be very interesting who has a
third quarterback which you could get kind of you could
get crazy creative too, Jalen Knowle.

Speaker 8 (30:16):
Oh yeah, you you could get wildly created.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Yes, yes, there's a lot you can do. I've told
this story before. In fact, I may have told it
earlier tonight.

Speaker 1 (30:28):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
But many years ago, my last year coaching, we were
playing a game and look, at the high school level,
you want to have a backup, but very rarely do
you get to your third string guy. But my backup
was also one of my starting wide receivers. Yeah, so
my quarterback goes down and I mean we ran a
lot through him, and so it was like, as I'm

(30:51):
going out to check on him, I'm talking to my
coach up in a box and I'm like, I was like, Mike,
what do I do? Do I go with the receiver?
It would have been tough or that we can practice.
I just messed around with taking my running back and
say hey, take some snaps just in case, and that's
what I went with. I put him in shotgun and
I just said, I said, here you go, just basically

(31:14):
sing a wing the whole night. I went under center
to run brun like, I'll never forget this. We used
to run a play. We used to run a play
called midline option. We called a husker, and mid line
option was pretty simple. We would run it to the
three technique side, and so we wouldn't block the three technique.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
We would just let the three technique.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Either run upfield then we'd hand it off, or the
three technique would jump on the running back and the
quarterback would pull it and run.

Speaker 8 (31:41):
And so he has to read that pro So he's
got to read it. Yeah, but he's the running back
and so he's been seeing this. Now he doesn't get
the ball, but he's been seeing this the whole time.
So in the third quarter, he takes the snap from center,
which also was an adventure, and he gives it to
the full back and the three techniqu would flying up field.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
He comes over and I'm like, man, I'm congratulating him,
and I'm patting him on the head and I'm like,
that's awesome, you did a great job reading it.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
He's like, no, coach, I was tired. I just gave too.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
Okay, all right, good enough, But we had to pull
some stuff out of our backside. But you put Jalen
know back there, you could do some of that stuff too.
That would be kind of fun. And come to that,
Johnny hopefully. And you're right, Mills has got to stay upright.
If it's not him, it's Graham Mertz, who look good
in the preseason. But you don't want to dabble around
too much in this situation. Mertz has a lot of upside.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
It's gonna be interesting to follow his career how they
handle this quarterback situation moving forward. But anyway, this is
what Davis is here for. This is why they signed him.
They need him as the insurance policy. Now it's time
to make a claim and Mills has to add through
for you.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
And that's exactly what I said the other day, Like
you paid all these insurance premiums.

Speaker 1 (32:51):
At some point you're gonna have to make a claim.
You don't want to. It's just like any insurance, like
car insurance.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
You pay car insurance and you hope you never have
to call the insurance company and go, hey, I had
a wreck and I need your help. You at least
have it, you don't want to use it. Well, the
Texans are at that point, So they got to make
a claim.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
What's the deductible? Here is the deductible. You're gonna lose
this and this and this. What are you gonna lose
and what are you gonna gain here? Mills has to
have a great understanding of the offense.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
Now.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
He's had coordinators galore here. We just talked about this
with Nick in the last segment. A lot of different
coordinators here, but a lot of similarities in the systems.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
And Mills is super smart.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
He picked up the offense in twenty twenty one pretty well.
A lot of it was just not a great team,
not an array of talent.

Speaker 7 (33:39):
You know.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
One of his best games was a loss to the
Titans the final game of that season.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
He was dealing that second half, I promisely, throwing the
ball around the yard, completing all sorts of passes touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
And we interviewed him the next day on the checkout
day for the players, and we went into twenty twenty
two very confident that Mills was going to take another
step forward after performance like that, a couple of wins
late in the season when you beat the Jags and
the Chargers and you felt like, okay, Mills even at
San Francisco.

Speaker 1 (34:07):
There were some good things in that game.

Speaker 3 (34:09):
He's a rookie challenged team and you thought, okay, keep
getting better.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
But in twenty twenty one, they didn't get better.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
They and then he shared time with Drisco for a
few games because we had the Driscoll cat. Yeah, and
then it went to Davis for the last few games
of that year. Of course, then he has the game
against Indeapolis Colts where he just he was flinging it
everywhere and making some tremendous plays and doing it and
of course a couple of the most famous plays in
Texas history when he hit Jordan Akens for the touchdown

(34:38):
and then the two and we walked out of there
with a win against the Colts.

Speaker 3 (34:42):
The other fourth and long on that series, fourth and
Brandon Curse thirteenth and thirteen, all right, So that was
right in front of me, the Brandon Cooks. So that
that was actually a better play because the one the
Akins could have would have should.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
Have been picked.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
I mean, he was flinging it up there because he
was getting some pressure Hail Mary, and yeah, it had
a very hair Hill Mary feel to it. But the
one he threw to Brandon Cooks on the sideline was
literally right in front of me and I could see
the ball.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Whoa, he stuck this one in here. This is a
good throat.

Speaker 2 (35:06):
It was a wild game as a wild kind of situation,
but it's one of those times where you're gonna have
And look the Bengals, Joe Burrow Lamar was out for
what three games? Washington is now going without Jane Daniels.
You know, teams have to go without their quarterbacks. You
don't want to, but it happens. You go without your

(35:29):
quarterback for a little bit.

Speaker 1 (35:30):
Doesn't injury.

Speaker 3 (35:31):
It doesn't seem to happen to Ma Holmes, it doesn't
seem to happen to Josh Allen. No, it's happened to
Lamar before he has gotten fame.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
I'll put that in air quotes.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
Mahomes missed a couple of games back. This is a
while back, but I remember it's a kneecap. He went
down and he landed on his kneecap. Was against Denver,
and I think he missed a game or two, but
that was about it.

Speaker 1 (35:52):
I don't think he's missed much other than that.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
And look, some guys, for some reason, some guys are
more susceptible to injuries. Them guys aren't much. I mean,
he hasn't just the two games his rookie year.

Speaker 1 (36:05):
Unfortunately there to the one injury.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
You'd I almost rather have a high ankle spring and
have a concussion. It might cost them a couple of games,
but obviously with concussion you're talking about something at a
much higher level that you don't even want to.

Speaker 3 (36:19):
Run anytimes, guys, and it's not going to happen to him.
I mean, fingers crossed, prayers all that. Let's just not
even go there because you know too, it doesn't look
the same after having so many I don't even I've
lost count. But with CJ, this is two years after
the last one, and let's just get through it. Let's
just get through it. Heel up, get him out there
as soon as possible safely. But back to Mills and

(36:41):
what he's got to work with here, Johnny Nick Chubb
misspractice wednesday. You got to see how he progresses. Otherwise
you start what he marks. Damian Pierce gets more carries,
Dary gets in there more. You know, just everybody's got
to elevate this. Want to see there's no more Jordan
on this team either not on the practice squad. He's
nowhere to be found in the building.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
Jay Taylor, he's been gone for Walt, So it's it's
basically Woody Darry Damien.

Speaker 6 (37:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
And another thing about British, if you need British, I
like that. I might think about British getting a few
more touches right in this one, and not just as
a full back because who knows, you know, maybe you
can bludgeon them a little bit. You're gonna have to
figure that out. The other thing about this game is
no fair baron right, fairbairn out with some kind of injury.

(37:26):
So it's like a quad okay, and that's not ideal
for a kicker. A kicker, and you got Matthew Wright,
who's a mercenary. I mean, this guy has I've lost
count how many teams he's been on and how many
times the Texans might have faced him five or six times.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
It just feels like.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
That, Okay, one, two, three, four, five, some repetition seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
Texans make twelve twelve teams, but some double visits there
like Steelers twice.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
I think Chiefs twice. So he started in twenty.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Mind you, this isn't going back in twenty twenty Steelers
twenty twenty one Jacks. That was the most he had
fourteen games with the Jags. He was twenty one of
twenty four that year. I mean, if you honestly, if
you look at his numbers mark over his six years,
he's fifty six of sixty four.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
That's pretty darn good.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
I mean, he's his lowest percentage of made kicks was
twenty twenty two Kansas City. He was three of four
seventy five percent, but four four twenty one of twenty four,
fifteen of eighteen three or four twelve of fourteen, fifteen
of sixteen, then three of three, eight of nine, four

(38:43):
four one on one, one on one. So he's already
kicked for Tennessee this year. And I'm trying to remember
which game that actually woul did he face us? He
made that field goal against US? No, he couldn't have
because we shut out Tennessee, so it could have been US.
But uh, he he's well from from I mean, fifty
six and sixty four throughout your career is eighty seven

(39:05):
point five percent.

Speaker 3 (39:06):
Career long fifty nine And what's my next question? About him,
Johnny that I don't know the answer to. Really, how
is he at these kickoffs?

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (39:13):
That in the bat's a big one in the landing
zone doing what Frank wants, which is it sounds like
Frank wants to kick the ball between the five and
the goal line. Yep, and prept closer to the goal
line without going over the goal line and forcing the
thirty five yard line touchback.

Speaker 1 (39:29):
This is.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
I mean, Kymie, We've gotten so used to having Kaymie
here is almost like having John Weeks. You know, Kymie's
been kicking since seventeen and.

Speaker 1 (39:38):
But he's been relieved a few times.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
Yeah, different times, you know, Joey Sly, Yeah, because you
know Kymie got banged up few times.

Speaker 1 (39:45):
Joey Sly. Madame Mendola made the game win kick against Cincinnati,
there you go.

Speaker 2 (39:49):
And then against the Jags from fifty nine he hit
the crossbar.

Speaker 1 (39:53):
Oh I still see that fifty nine. That was fifty nine.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
It was a bly I think it was fifteen to
fifty eight or fifty nine, Okay, and it hits the
I mean I see it. It's one of those where
it looks like he made this. We're going overtime and
then it just died. He just bang and you're like, oh,
I oh, which game was this?

Speaker 3 (40:11):
People were cheering too much out of the bullpen section
pushed the ball back.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
Yes, yeah, kind of like the helicopters and the Buffalo
Bill's Super Bowl many many eons ago.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
I was watching it was it was a Bears. I
think it was a game.

Speaker 2 (40:24):
I can't remember what it was, but there was a
game and they have you know, they've got mics all
over the place, and there was a kick that hit
that doint. You know most time you kind of hear
a doint. It's just like, I think this one was
a full on dog. I mean, it shook.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
They sound like dogs and they do it's like they
put them on, they pick up everything.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
So Kaymi looks like he is not It looks like
he is going to be out for this one. So
Matthew Wright signed a practice squad. Now here's the important
part here. You get three practice squad call ups, so
you can leave Matthew right on the practice squad. If
something were to happen to Kaymie Fairbaron, then more like you,

(41:08):
I'm sorry. If we're going to extend beyond three four weeks,
you're probably gonna put Kaymie on IR, which hasn't happened yet,
So you can just use the three call ups for
Matthew right as your kicker, But that takes up one
of the two you have from a standard elevation for
your practice squad, so that kind of hamstrings you too.

Speaker 1 (41:24):
This is a question for Nick probably.

Speaker 3 (41:26):
But let's say you have an injury and you sit
that week, but the next week it's even worse and
you feel like it's not getting any better, to the
point where now we got to put you on IR.
In baseball, you get the retroactive thing with the injury
list once. You don't want get that with the NFL.
So if you put up on IR next week, not
that you will. I'm just hypothesis for player X. When

(41:49):
that guy goes on the IR, that's when it starts.
That's when the clock starts taking. You don't get that
game in hand.

Speaker 6 (41:54):
Nope.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
Unfortunately, it sounds like.

Speaker 3 (41:57):
It's going to be a temporary kind of thing, and
Matthew is here to kick fingers.

Speaker 1 (42:01):
Cross it is.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
But Matthew Wright being a guy that has made some
field goals and done a pretty good job, and look, the.

Speaker 3 (42:07):
Texas team kicks field goals, Johnny, this team needs a
field goal kicker to make remind me, yes, don't remind me.
I prefer to finish these drives. I'd prefer these kicks
to be ones and not threes. But that's the way
it's been. And you better buckle up because Matthew Wright's
gonna be heard from.

Speaker 6 (42:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
Now, don't get me wrong, Matthew right, glad he's here.
But maybe kind of like Camp Tampa Bay game in
two twenty twenty three. Yeah, when Kayimi went down during
the game, Darry was the backup kicker, which I'm assuming
darr is the backup kicker in a situation again, but
Demiko was a little hesitant to how do we use him?

Speaker 1 (42:46):
Do we not? So they went for it.

Speaker 2 (42:48):
And remember they threw that fourth down touchdown in the
south end zone to Dalton Schultz on fourth down.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
They went for it because they didn't have fair bear.
Maybe it forces your hand a little bit, well, maybe
it makes you more aggressive at like the thirty five
Maye Right, we don't want to try a fifty five fifty.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
Three yarder here, Let's go for fourth, fourth and three.

Speaker 3 (43:07):
Yeah, so your go for a distance increases at least
slightly here. Instead of fourth and one or whatever it
was gonna be, now it's fourth and three or fourth
and four.

Speaker 1 (43:16):
We're gonna go for in that end of the field
now without CJ. Stroud.

Speaker 2 (43:19):
Okay, that's a that's definitely a big one. We'll keep
our eyes this week on ed Ingram, Titus Howard.

Speaker 6 (43:25):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
They were also out Nick Chubb, Jalen Peatree was banged up.

Speaker 1 (43:30):
I saw Jalen the last play of the game.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
He was a little slow getting up and I thought, oh,
I didn't like that at all. So that is definitely
one to keep an eye. Nobody's gonna cry in their
beer in Jacksonville for the Texans being injured. They're dealing
with Travis Hunter being out at practice. Brian Thomas Junior
did not practice today. Uh, they just got Jakobe Myers

(43:53):
from Las Vegas to be brown Diami. Brown was in
a red jersey. Okay, so a non contact red jersey,
so practicing, but in a red jersey. They did have
Tim Patrick practicing, so that was a step in the
right direction. But they've got a couple of their big
weapons out. Jordan Lewis, who had the big pick of
CJ in that game. He did not practice. So oh

(44:15):
that's encouraging. This is that time of year where you're
you're looking at your roster building and you're going, Okay,
we put this thing together for games like this. This
is our depth being stretched, this is our talent being stretched.
How do we get through the game and do it
in a positive man?

Speaker 3 (44:30):
We not in this way, but sometimes I like these
when everybody has to bond together and just rise to
the occasion. Circle the wagons, thiche.

Speaker 1 (44:40):
I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
I like doing that when we're six and two or
five and three. Yeah, I know, not one or three
and five, but I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
I like these kind of games.

Speaker 2 (44:47):
I like to see guys step up that maybe haven't
before and make a play. It's always fun. Now, the
rest of the injury report, it is long. It is lengthy.
We'll do that next right here in Texas All Access.
All right, here we go ooh wednesdayntion of Texans All Access,
welcome back.

Speaker 1 (45:03):
Appreciate you being with me.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
John Harris, football analyst, sideline reporter for your Houston Texans.
I said we would get to injury report, and I
really I don't want to because this one is ugly.
We went from being one of the healthiest teams in
the league to being one of the most banged up

(45:29):
I think in the league.

Speaker 1 (45:31):
This is amazing. I don't know that I've ever seen this.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
I'm only seeing an injury report with this many guys,
especially in the DMP category. Twenty seventeen, Week two, we
had a Thursday night game against Cincinnati. We're coming off
the opener against Jacksonville. They sacked everybody that played quarterback.
It was ridiculous. They started claiming themselves to be Saxonville

(45:56):
and then they went on a run that year at
twenty seventeen.

Speaker 1 (46:00):
That game, we got beat up.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
In that game, we had twenty one players on the
injury report, twenty one. Now there are only fourteen, but
my goodness.

Speaker 9 (46:12):
They're.

Speaker 2 (46:15):
It's a lot of starters, so bear with me. Here
dnp's ten from today's practice. Denico Autry dealing with knee,
Will Anderson Junior dealing with a quad injury, Harrison Bryant
a shoulder, Nick Chubb with a foot, Kimie Fairbairn we

(46:36):
talked about looks like he will be out with a quad.
Christian Harris was also banged up in the game. He's
got a shin. Titus Howard went out with a concussion.
We talked about that. Ed Ingram was dealing with a
knee issue. Now he went back in the game on
Sunday against the Broncos, but that knee in issue. Did
not practice today. Jalen Petree another one I was worried about.

(46:59):
He also is in and get cush your protocol.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
CJ.

Speaker 2 (47:02):
Stroud We've talked about throughout the show. He will not
play against the Jaguars on Sunday. That's ten blockfield goal,
one of the best edge rushers in the league, second
tight end, starting running backs, starting kicker, key special teamer,
starting right tackle, starting right guard, starting nickel, and your

(47:22):
starting quarterback. Ten dnps limited but at practice at least
and doing some things. Braxton Barrios, Dalton Schultz. That was
good full participation. Dylan Horton, Yakob Johnson. Boy, that's a mouthful.
Keep in mind that on Sunday typically there are five

(47:44):
to seven players inactive.

Speaker 1 (47:47):
Ten dnps.

Speaker 2 (47:49):
Hopefully we can see some movement going in the right
direction with those but dnps, those injuries all make taking
a toll on your tea. Now, the Jaguars don't have
as many, but they've already lost Travis Hunter to IR.
That was middle of last week. Today, starting guard Ezra

(48:09):
Cleveland did not participate. Jordan Lewis, who picked off CJ
in the game of Jacksonville at a key time in fourth quarter,
did not participate. He's missed I think a couple of
games now. Hunter long tight end Brian Thomas Junior deal
with the ankle, did not participate, So let's Travis Hunter
out already in IR. Brian Thomas Junior, DMP Diami Brown

(48:31):
did participate. He got a cushion in the previous game.
But he did participate in a limited capacity. Dennis Gardeck
was wearing a red jersey at practice. He was there
but limited. Devon Hamilton, who had the big play at
the end of the game, he was limited. Jack Kaiser
limited Devin Lloyd back at practice. That was a big one.
Back full. He's missed a few games. Ventro Miller does

(48:54):
a good job. Nick talked about that earlier in the show.
He does a great job. In fact, Week four last year,
I thought Ventro Miller was one of the two best
defensive players in a game on either side. He was incredible,
but Devin Lloyd back. He was big against us the
first time, so miss injury report is not pretty. But
it's Wednesday, so maybe there'll be some movement. But we

(49:15):
already know CJ. Stroud not gonna play with that concussion,
and we already know that Kaymie Fairbairn not gonna play Sunday.
Matthew Wright was added to the practice squad to be
able to kick on Sunday for the Texans.

Speaker 1 (49:30):
Jaguars not immune.

Speaker 2 (49:32):
They've got guys that are banged up as well, some
key guys Jordan Lewis in particular, Brian Thomas junior. But
Devin Lloyd back at practice was a great sign for
the Jaguars. And then I'll make it really really tough
if they've got Olakun and Lloyd back in the lineup together.
They are very very good together. Speaking of the Jags,
let's remember behind the mics. Next, it's the voice of

(49:52):
the Jaguars, Frank FRANGI, longtime friend of mine and the
voice of the Texans. My radio partner, were my great friends,
Mark Van. Those two get together and talk Jaggs Texans.
Next right here in Texans All Access, Welcome back, everybody
to Wednesday. In this year at Texans All Access. Appreciate
you being with me John Harris Football on a sideline

(50:12):
reporter for your Houston Texans Now, way way back in
the day. And I tell the story every time we
play Jacksonville Jaguars. I grew up as a football coach
in Jacksonville. One of the guys I'd love to listen
to the afternoons man by the name of Frank Frjie.
He is now the play by play voice of the
Jacksonville Jaguars. So I always love when Mark vandermir and

(50:35):
Frank get together to my favorite people on the face
of the earth. They I call it men behind the mics,
the two men that'll call the game on Sunday for
the respective organizations. Mark for the Texans, Frank for the Jaguars.
They meet up to talk a little bit about the Jags.

Speaker 3 (50:49):
Right here joining us now, Frank Franjie, voice of the
Jacksonville Jaguars, And Frank, how's that winning thing going for you?
Because it's been a while for the Houston Texans to
have a winning record. Last year, as a matter of fact,
that the Jags at five and three and here they
come into NRG Stadium, how you doing, my friend.

Speaker 7 (51:08):
I'm doing great, Mark, thanks for having me on. Everything
is good here, and yeah, it's been an interesting season here. Boy.
That was a big one on Sunday, the Jags and
the Raiders, as you know, went to overtime. Both teams
scored a touchdown. The Jags scored first, the Raiders scored
went for two, and we knocked it down and held on.
And this team needed that. It's been an emotional kind
of eight nine months. Mark. The coach gets fired, then

(51:30):
the general manager gets fired. Then they hired Tony Boselli.
Then they hired you know, the whole grill. Then they
hired the new coach in the new GM, who are
really terrific by the way, and then they get off
to a good start and beat the Chiefs on a
Monday night and the city's going crazy. Then they lose
two games the up and down. The team really needed
an off week, got the off week, and then found
a way to get a win last week. So yeah,
they're a good place here and it's been a while

(51:52):
since it felt like this around here. It's five and three,
it's not eight to zero, but I think they feel
pretty good.

Speaker 3 (51:56):
I was listening to you because we were done and
it was it's a late window. So I heard you
on Sirius Exam and it sounded great. It sounded really
exciting and edge of the seat kind of stuff in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
And I want to go right here.

Speaker 3 (52:10):
What was the discussion because I missed this part the
discussion in the broadcast booth about Liam Kohane taking the
ball in overtime, having the option and he takes the
ball first.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
What were your thoughts?

Speaker 7 (52:22):
You know, the funny thing about that is people are
still trying to figure that out, as you know. That's
what we talked about. Jeff Logerbrunner is a great color
guy and I always worked together the whole time. The
paradigm's changed obviously, until now you had to take the
ball to the team's course first wins in the regular season.
This is the first year that they've had to figure
that out. So I don't think people have figured it

(52:42):
out yet. The two previous overtime games before this one,
the team kicked off, figured they'd have the ball last
and know what they have to do, just like the
college guys do in the NFL. I don't think people
quite figured it out. So we talked about that. We
talked about what do you even before the coin, so
what do you wind up doing? So when Liam took
the ball, we all thought, okay, if you take it,
you better score. You know the reason people haven't taken

(53:04):
the ball to the other two if you don't. But
he was confident, he said, he came out and said
even yesterday when he talked to the media again, he said,
listen to My thinking was if it was fifteen minutes,
I probably wouldn't have taken the ball. But that regular
season overtime, that's ten minutes. So if you hold the
ball seven eight, nine minutes and score, and that's what
they did. They scored with three minutes left. The problem
is the Raiders ran the kickoff back sixty yards to

(53:27):
the deg to the plus forty. So I think the
thing we're I think we're all still to point mark,
all of us figuring out what these guys are going
to do, and I don't think they know yet. In college,
you know, right, it's twenty five yard line. If you
win the toss, you play defense first, so you know
what you have to do. It looks like that's the
way the NFL is headed, But I don't think everybody's
totally figured it out. And that was our conversation in

(53:48):
the broadcast booth is, let's see what winds up being
the norm, because I don't think anybody knows the norm yet.

Speaker 1 (53:53):
What would you do?

Speaker 3 (53:54):
Do you have any ideas, Frank, of solving overtime because
they clearly need another tweak or two before where this
thing is done.

Speaker 7 (54:01):
Yeah, I know they're trying to save wear and tear. Okay,
if they're going to keep it the way it is now,
ten minutes isn't long enough. I know the reason they
did it is is it's a brutal game. But I
don't think ten minutes isn't long enough. I don't I
like the college rule. Now, I'm like you, Mark, I
did an awful lot of college football before I was
doing the NFL. Okay, I like the college rule. I

(54:24):
don't love it from the twenty five. I might put
it at midfield or the forty five, so you're not
automatically in scoring position. Of course, with NFL's kickers today,
I guess you are, but you know my point. I
might I like the college rule, but I wouldn't start
at the twenty five. I'd put that make the team
have to score and make at least a two first
downs here to be in a reasonable scoring position. But

(54:46):
with the rule the way it is in the NFL.
Now back to your first question. If it's ten minutes,
which it is in the regular season, and if you
have to and if both teams are guaranteed a possession,
which they should be by the way that was there
never should have been, you can score. It does team
in football. So they got that part right. I might
take the ball. I might take the ball into it.
Liam Cohen did, and I think you're going to see
teams do both is with ten minutes. With fifteen minutes,

(55:08):
everybody would play defense.

Speaker 6 (55:09):
First.

Speaker 7 (55:09):
We all know that, right, everybody would play defense. With
ten minutes, I think you're going to see some people
take the ball. It'll be fun to watch these continue
on with and again remember in the playoffs is fifteen minutes,
but in the regular season with the ten minutes, it'll
be interesting to see what people do.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
Well, it's funny you brought it up.

Speaker 3 (55:25):
I mean, if the Jags are at the fifty, you
can make a field goal from there. Now it's scientifically
proven with Cam Little hitting the sixty eight yarder and
hitting the seventy yarder in the preseason. This has been
a fun ride so far with this young kicker. Frank
tell Us.

Speaker 7 (55:41):
Let me tell Mark, let me tell you something. He's
not barely making these. It's not like it's not like
that sixty eight yarder barely crossed the crossbar with like
it almost hit the crossbar. I don't know. I'm sure
you saw it. That thing's good from that thing's good
from seventy five. I mean we watched it and the
seventy yard or in the preseason, Mark those things was Again,

(56:04):
he's not barely making You know, sometimes you'll see a
field goal kicker they kick a little higher and you
don't know if it's going to get there or not
not as much anymore cannon legs, but over the years,
and it would barely cross the crossbard. It might hit it.
He might scrape it or hit it. This guy's clear
and I think about five six seven yards on the
sixty eight seven yard field. Well, that's where the game
is now. The Dallas kicker is going to kick one

(56:25):
of these. There's kickers in the lake that are going
to kick these. It's amazing. It's amazing how strong their
legs are and it really is.

Speaker 3 (56:32):
Yeah, Dallas had a shot on Monday night to get
it well between that between these kickers with the long
range and then field position being what it is with
the kickoff rule.

Speaker 1 (56:42):
What's your review?

Speaker 3 (56:43):
You and I talked earlier in the season, but now
we've got some water under the bridge here with the
touchback at the thirty five. It is crazy town with
these kickoffs. You see a lot of different situations, some turnovers,
and you know, some botched attempts to you know, do
I bring it out or not?

Speaker 1 (56:58):
What should I do? Special teams is more important than ever.

Speaker 7 (57:03):
And let me tell what they're all trying to do now,
because I've asked about this. First, I thought, okay, you
don't what you don't want to do? You don't want
to kick it in the end zone because then they
started the thirty five. So that's that's the one that
you know want Okay, So what people were doing was
pooching these high kicks and have them come down around
the five. Well, the problem with that is, but the
special team's coaches will tell you Mark is then the

(57:23):
guy gets a running start, he starts in the middle
of the end zone and he gets this running start
and he catches it on the run and then those
are good returns. So now what people are trying to
do is they're trying to kick line drives that land
in there. Well, but if you mishit it and it
bounces before the twenty, it comes up to the forty,
So it's harder than ever for the kicker. You know
what I would have done. I thought about this, you

(57:44):
know what I was instead of all this rules and
landings on this and landings on this, and the kickers
as these strong leg he go off from the ten,
he go off from the twenty. Right, if one if
these guys are kicking off from the twenty yard line,
let them kick it as far as they want. They're
not kicking those balls in the end zone, right, I
might have might have backed it up to the twenty
and just let it, let it fly. I think that's
probably what I looked at.

Speaker 3 (58:03):
Johnny's idea was to make the landing zone even bigger,
or get rid of it altogether and just let them rip,
you know, so see what happens then. But you know,
then we might have some real craziness. I think it
has to go beyond a certain yard line. Like the
thirty five because that's where the wave of return men
and coverage guys are. Anyway, So what do you think
of the Jaguar offense right now? Because the Jags are

(58:26):
dealing with a lot of injuries and we don't know
who's in and who's out with some of the stars.
You know, Travis Hunter is obviously on IR right now,
but with some of the injuries you had, certain guys
had to step up, and Trevor Lawrence did a good
job against the Raiders and he needs to continue to
do that.

Speaker 1 (58:41):
Your thoughts, Frank, think.

Speaker 7 (58:43):
About this mark when the season started and when every
game has started until the injury started. This was their
their eleven personnel, which is you know, is one running back,
one tight end, three wide, which is what everybody runs.
This is the lineup. Briton Strains the tight end, and
the three wide receivers were Brian Thomas Junior or Deammy Brown,
and Travis Hunter. That was the four guys right. None

(59:04):
of them finished the game and none of them finished
the game in data zero. Okay, Strange is on IR now,
Travis Hunter's on IR. Brian Thomas Junior and Diammy Brown
both got hurt. In the game, so none of the
four finished the game. So they had two guys that
they called up from the practice squad the day of
the game that finished the game as the starting receivers,
and God lets Trevor. He took him down the field

(59:25):
with that. So he did a great job working with
backup guys that he hasn't repped very much with it.
It's not just that they're not as good as the starter,
as you know, it's also they haven't had they haven't
any reps with the quarterback and timing and everything in
the NFL. So he did a really good job this week.
They're not gonna have Strange and they're not gonna have
Travis Hunter. So Brian Thomas Junior and Demmy Brown both

(59:46):
were hurt, and then Geommy's in the concussion protocol. Brian bumped.
He had a shoulder injury and he kind of reinjured
in a little bit. I don't know who's playing. I
don't think any as we sit here on Tuesday, I
don't think anybody has any idea who's playing that game
in the receiver. So that's how bizarre the situation is.
Before we head to Houston, at least for today.

Speaker 10 (01:00:04):
Now.

Speaker 7 (01:00:05):
Maybe there'll be more clarity when we get to Wednesday
or even Thursday. But as we see her today, Mark,
I don't think we have any ideas playing well.

Speaker 3 (01:00:12):
Devin Lloyd's another one that has been missing and may
or may not be back. We were really impressed with him, Frank,
in the game in North Florida between the Texans and
the Jags, and the Jags defense as a whole, forcing turnovers,
making life really tough for the Texans who had the
ball in scoring range multiple times but turned it over
a bunch in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
What about that side of the football in general, Frank.

Speaker 7 (01:00:33):
Yeah, they were great at getting takeaways. But they and
again I sound like I'm making excuses, but they've been
decimated too. Trayvon Walker has been playing with the club
on his hand and then got injected from throwing a
punch last game. Devin Lloyd hadn't played, as you know,
in three games. Jordan Lewis, a terrific free agencygee from Dallas,
got hurt in the game. Eric Murray, who you know
very well, the safety who was in Houston all those years,

(01:00:53):
who's played very well when he got here. Now Mark,
he's now on ir so that's four more starters. That's
for on the defensive side of the ball. He went
to all the guys on the offensive side of the ball.
The defense went healthy's pretty good. The tackles haven't played great,
h the ends have been pretty good. The back seven
has been very good. And so but you got you
gotta have guys that are healthy. That's that's the biggest concern.
Devin Lloyd had four interceptions and then got hurt. He

(01:01:16):
hurt his calf. It practiced a week. They've been very
cautious with that. Played a little bit the first game
after that, but he wasn't himself. They did not take
him to London, held him out of that game. Then
they had the off week. We thought he traveled to
He traveled to Las Vegas. He traveled to see if
he could go, so they thought we thought they might play.
But then he was an active day off, in active,
healthy scratched or not healthy, scratch but scratched the day up.

(01:01:38):
And I don't think he's ever being very carey. It's
the calf. And you know in sports today, mark these
calves become achilles, become gone for the year, gone for
a year, and so people are very careful about not
even letting these cast injuries turn into these Achilles injuries.
The Pacers guy draught up Blake on the name of
the basketbllayer for the Pacer same thing. Remember, had the
bad calf, wanted to play because it was the finals

(01:01:59):
and blew the Achilles and al Gonker a lot of
this year, and so I think they're being very careful
with him. My guess would be he's fifty to fifty
and again they'll tell us later in the week, but
my guess is they want Devin Lloyd back where they want.

Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
To be very careful in their cap Frank Francie, Voice
of the Jaguars with us, Frank, we have something in
common here with our teams. They both have two games
with the Colts down the stretch. Colts just lost to Pittsburgh,
turned the ball over a bunch six cough ups in
that game after only four heading in. What do you
think of them? Obviously when they've got it going on,
they're very good, But what about the Colts overall?

Speaker 7 (01:02:33):
Frank, Well, I'll say this, give Shane stike In credit.
Give that operation credit. When you get to seven and one,
it's not a Fluke. Now they haven't played as tough
as schedule. The Texans have a brutally tough schedule all
year long. That first place schedule that you guys drew
first play schedule is always tough at it. God bless
the Texans. The Texans have a really hard schedule from
start to finish. The Colts had a very easy schedule

(01:02:56):
to start the season, and it's about to get tougher.
But I almost hate to say that mark because it
diminishes what they've done a little. I mean, then you're
seven and one, you're pretty dang good, you know that
or whatever. They're seven to two now, but you start
seven to one, you're pretty dang good. Daniel Jones seems
to find himself. You ever thought about how many quarterbacks
in this league find themselves after the first place, whether

(01:03:17):
it's Baker Mayfield or Sam Donold, look out he's playing.
And now Daniel Jones, it's almost like the pressure's off, right,
the pressure to save the franchise is gone. Now you're
just you're almost a journeyman.

Speaker 10 (01:03:29):
Now.

Speaker 7 (01:03:29):
You're always a good player, or you wouldn't have had
that pressure in the first place. But the pressure's gone.
You relax a little bit. And I think Daniel Jones
is playing well. And I think Jonathan Tale is one
of the best backs in the league. I really do.
He maybe be past back in the league, and so
I think what they're doing is legit. But the schedules
are about to get harder. They have had a little
uneasier schedule, so it'll be interesting that that's even as

(01:03:51):
much as this our franchise has struggled here. You know,
the Colts haven't won a game in Jacksonville since twenty fourteen.
Did you realize that?

Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
I did know that two thousand fourteen.

Speaker 7 (01:04:01):
And they've been they've been to better franchise these last
ten twelve years, but they haven't won a division and
they haven't won here. So it's been a strange. It's
a strange series when the deed by the Cults, for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
It's kind of a strange year in the AFC South
in general because the Texans having the struggles they're having
right now, and there's a long.

Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
Way to go.

Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
We'll see how it all plays out. Frank Francis, Voice
of the Jaguars, joining us right now. Every week John
Harris plays this game with us on the radio. What's
the best team in the league, because every week it
feels different. What is your thought this week, Frank on
the best team in the NFL, because it's very difficult
to pinpoint that you know a.

Speaker 7 (01:04:34):
Week or two good. How do you not say it's
the Colts because of their record? But I don't believe it.
Probably is if I was betting my money on who's
going to win the whole thing? To me, boy, the
Seahawks looked good. I saw them up close in personal Now,
so the Seahawks would get a lot of vote. They're
really marked, They're really good. But I would have a
hard time not picking the Bills or the Chiefs until
someone proves to me it's not them. I mean, if

(01:04:55):
I'm betting my money, I'd rather bet your money, by
the way, something been betting your money. I would, I would.
I would probably say Bills are Chiefs. The boy the Seahawks.
We saw the Seahawks Rams up close in Purple, I
will say this. And we had a stretch of four
consecutive games that Jaggs did where they at San Francisco

(01:05:15):
home against the Chiefs, home against Seattle, and then the
Rams in London. Now that's four pretty tough games now,
all right, four tough games. And we said before beforehand,
if you'd go to and doing those games, you feel
pretty good. Well, you want the first two, but then
you didn't feel as good about the two and two. Right,
That's kind of how it worked. So but it'll be
interesting to see one other point. By the way, and

(01:05:35):
I'm not saying just because I'm talking to you on
this interview, because I said this on my air yesterday,
the Texans are better than that record that we all
know that. I mean c J. Stroud got knocked out
of the game. The Texans are the team. Keep an
eye on the dang Texas. We've all been saying that
around here, just like I said the same thing about
the Ravens. When the Ravens get their players back, I
still think they're going to win the r I said

(01:05:55):
that even when they were one and five. I just
believe they had the best team. Keep an eye on
the Houston text. Nobody, I promise you, nobody in this
city has any any misgivings about how good the Texans are.
It's been a tough start, but it's a long season.
If CJ. Stroud comes back, and obviously that's a big
part of it. Now, you know you know that story
better than I do. But I think the Texans have
a pretty good football team. I really do.

Speaker 1 (01:06:16):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:06:16):
It's wild that in college football it's kind of winding
down in the NFL as far as the Texans go,
because they're there by early, still have nine games to
play here, So it's a whole season basically that you
have to navigate through. Frank, And speaking of college football,
University of Florida job is open. I know you host
a talk show and everything and have a lot of
college football conversation. How good is the Florida job versus

(01:06:40):
some of the other open jobs in the SEC or
beyond Virginia Tech, Penn State, UCLA, you name it.

Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
You tell me.

Speaker 7 (01:06:49):
I've we got to chuckle around here, Mark, because the
LSU and Florida people are arguing with each other about
who's got the better job. And here's what I think.
I think there's probably eight to ten jobs in America Florida, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma,
Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State. They're all the same. You know,

(01:07:11):
you can say, Okay, the southern jobs are better because
they're closer to the players, and there's some truths to that.
You don't have to go very far to recruit a
national championship team. But those are great jobs. I would
say Florida, LSU, and Penn State all being open at
the same time are blue blood I mean completely blue
blood jobs, blue blood as it gets in my opinion,
and I think they're all really good jobs. By the way,

(01:07:33):
if you're going to ask me who I think the
next Florida coach is going to be, I know I'm
taking the shalk here. I'll tell you right now, and
you can tell me what a dummy I am. If
I was wrong, I would be roundly surprised if Lane
Kiffin's not the Florida coach. I think I think the
job he's I think he's enamored by it. He's said
in his documentary, however, he wears the visor because he
always idolized the Burrier and that's why he's kind of

(01:07:54):
chirpie and why he wears the visor. He told Molly
McGrath right before the game that the Swamp of a
special place and that's where he met his then wife Layla,
and I would I'll go write me down for that
and then tell me what it put me on freezing
cold takes or whatever it is if I get it wrong.
But I would be. I think Kiffen wants the job, Mark,

(01:08:14):
I think, and I think. I think he believes in
ole Miss and he loves what ole Miss has done
for him, and I think he has a romantic tie
to it. He'll be able to statue for him there
because I think he's gonna have in the playoffs this
year for the first time. But I think he wants
the Florida job, and I think Florida's gonna want him.
I would be. I would be moderately surprised if he's
not the next Florida coach's That's that's how I feel
about that job.

Speaker 3 (01:08:34):
That aside, Frank, do you feel like in today's world
of college football you can win a national championship from
a lot of different directions. Take Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State.
He's going to be popular with some of these openings,
but he's from there and the family and all that,
and why not just stay because it's all about your
money supply anyway, for the nil funding to get the

(01:08:56):
good athletes there, and you can still be competitive your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (01:09:00):
There's four guys that they're alma mater, that are that
are going to be, that are going to be in
the car and Carosel mentioned Jeff Brahm at Louisville, Brent
Key at Georgia Tech, Clark Lee at Vanderbilt, and Kenny
Dillingham in Arizona State. All four guys are at their
alma mater, all four A risers in this whole carousel world.
I think you can get to the playoffs and deepen

(01:09:22):
the playoffs at a lot of places. That's your point.
You didn't used to be now with twelve teams are
about to go to sixteen teams recruiting and the portal
allows you to build your roster quicker than ever before.
I don't know that you can win national championships in
all those places, because eventually you're going to run into
Ohio State, and you're going to run into Georgia, who
probably has more good players than YouTube. So I don't

(01:09:45):
know that you can win national championships anywhere. I think
you can get to the playoffs. I think you can
get deep into play Indiana will be a great exam.
Indiana will will prove or dispute this because if Indiana
is really good and it's freaking Indiana, if Indiana are
ole miss win the national championship, then if who's your theory,
I have no doubt you can get to the playoffs,
but I don't know that you can win the whole

(01:10:06):
thing very often if you're not in one of those
blue buns, which is why all four of those guys
that are at Alma maters. I think. I think if
you're Kenny Dillingham and Penn State calls you, I think
he's probably taken the job. That's I may be wrong.
I think if you're Clark Lee and Auburn calls you,
you're probably taking I might be wrong, but that's kind
of those are my expectations.

Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
Fair point, Frank, great stuff. As always, we look forward
to seeing you on Sunday at NRG Stadium.

Speaker 7 (01:10:32):
Look forward to it, Mark, I always do. Thanks for
having me on. Take care Man.

Speaker 2 (01:10:35):
Two of the best people you are ever going to meet,
Mark Vandermuir and Frank Franjie, another guy that we have
a lot of fun with whenever he walks in studio.
Love having him around. He is a tremendous dude, and
that is Mario Edwards Junior. He was saluted this week

(01:10:57):
for his work with veterans. Will discuss that, will congratulate
him for that, and then we'll talk some ball with
Mario Edwards Junior.

Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
Next right here at Texans All Access.

Speaker 2 (01:11:06):
Yes, sir, welcome back to this Wednesday istion of Texans
All Access. John Harris, your host football ANALSILID reporter for
your Houston Texans time. Catch up with Mario Edwards Junior,
and we do that right here.

Speaker 1 (01:11:19):
Mario Edwards Junior joining us. Since studio, Mario, how's it going?

Speaker 6 (01:11:22):
Great to see you going good? Thanks for having me all.

Speaker 3 (01:11:24):
Right, So before we go anywhere, Salute to Service Award nominee.

Speaker 1 (01:11:28):
What does that mean to you, Mario?

Speaker 6 (01:11:30):
It means a lot.

Speaker 11 (01:11:32):
My sister was in the Army, so I know kind
of first hand how it is to support people and
support them during their time of service, and it's fun
to be able to support her and veterans and first responders.

Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
Mark had a great question that he's been asking a
lot of the guests, and Jake Hansen had a good answer.
He said air force. And then when he said air force,
we asked him what his call signed would be and
he just said he would. He would be called jugs,
you know, like hangman or Maverick. So if you were
to be in in one of the military branches, Now
your sister was in your army, so maybe you're you're biased,

(01:12:05):
But if you were to be in any one of
the five major ones Army, Navy, air Force, Marines, coach guard,
which one would you be in?

Speaker 6 (01:12:11):
Real I have to go Army like my sister.

Speaker 1 (01:12:13):
Yeah, okay, nice, all right, going for that. That's nice?

Speaker 3 (01:12:16):
That like because a lot of people pick air Force
because they think top gun or yeah, Navy.

Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
Okay, So I'll ask you if you were top gun,
what would your call sign be?

Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Would be? Actually Navy I juggernaut, Juggernaut, juggling. I like that.

Speaker 10 (01:12:29):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
We've got jugs and juggernaut. I like it. That's very nice. Hey,
you did that.

Speaker 3 (01:12:34):
And we'll get to the football stump in a moment here.
But this is flag football because you did the Salute
to service showdown, you and the rookies and what was
the first responders playing flag football?

Speaker 1 (01:12:45):
How was that? Was that pretty cool to coach them?

Speaker 6 (01:12:47):
It was pretty cool.

Speaker 11 (01:12:48):
It was I understand a little bit of how the
coaches feel sometimes trying to get them to run certain
places and it's not going through.

Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
So so did it make you?

Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
You know what when coach Rod says something, Okay, I
understand how you gotta give you a new respect a
little bit for the coaches.

Speaker 11 (01:13:03):
We went out there and drew it up, and they
just winged it what they wanted to do, got picked
two picks in a row and everything.

Speaker 6 (01:13:10):
I'm like, that's not what we drew up.

Speaker 3 (01:13:12):
You know, what did your dad tell you that really
helped you out as a professional football player?

Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
I mean here you are a decade in the league.

Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
Okay, so you know what's going on, But what helped
you early on that you said throughout your career?

Speaker 11 (01:13:24):
Yeah, that's right, no question h. I'll probably say, go
to work, to go to work, m h. You know,
if you're gonna be here, same thing he would tell
me in school, If you're gonna be there for so
many hours a day, you might as well take advantage
of it and get good grades and things like that,
and just always being early. So I try to be
in the building as early as possible. Just do an
extra The more you can do, the more extra you do,

(01:13:47):
the longer you stick around.

Speaker 3 (01:13:48):
Has that changed as you've evolved throughout your career, because
you know, you're not a young football player anymore. You're
not as old as a person, but as a football player,
you know you've been around a little bit here.

Speaker 1 (01:13:58):
So how's that changed?

Speaker 11 (01:14:00):
Oh, not really changed. I think it kind of stayed true.
I think the older I've got and I've kind of
created my own kind of routine that helps me feel
good and I get in in the morning. I can't
really sleep past six thirty or seven, so I'm up
pretty early. So being up early always gives me a
little bit ahead of the game.

Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Mario, is that like, is it that way in the
off season? Two can't sleep past six thirty seven o'clock?
Or do you allow yourself, Okay, I'm gonna sleep till
seven thirty today or is it just kind of ingrained
to you.

Speaker 1 (01:14:27):
That's just you just get up and you start working.

Speaker 11 (01:14:29):
I'll be up, but I'll just be watching TV or
moving around stuff like that. But I can't really sleep
past yeah, about thirty six o'clock at.

Speaker 1 (01:14:36):
This point of the season. What are we in week ten?
From week ten, how's the body feel?

Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
Because the car crashes, I don't know that people really
truly understand that you're down in it. You're down in
the trenches, and there are numerous plays in the game
where you've got two guys three hundred pounds each.

Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
Back back and then another one back back.

Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
The body's got to be feeling it, Mario, at this
point of the year, is it? How's the body really feel?
How long does it take you to kind of recover
as the season goes on.

Speaker 11 (01:15:08):
At this point, I think the body is feeling about
like any everybody else in the season around week ten.
But I think this is where your routine kind of
kicks in, and the more you stay preventative to prevent
things from happening, you kind of get a jump start
on your body from all the aches. So the more
I get in here earlier and do my cold tubs,
hot tubs, red light bed, stretching, getting my adjustments and

(01:15:30):
just staying on top of things, it helps the body.

Speaker 1 (01:15:32):
Wait did you say red light bed?

Speaker 6 (01:15:34):
Wait?

Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
Wait, explain that.

Speaker 11 (01:15:37):
It kind of looks like a tanning bed. Okay, but
you have so many different options you can choose from
your muscles. You can do it for energy, you can
do it for a different type of things. So I
just make sure I get in there at least fifteen
to twenty minutes and get my muscles back.

Speaker 1 (01:15:51):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (01:15:53):
Interesting the red light therapy. Red light, that's a popular thing,
So that stuff works all right. Mario Edwards Junior joining
us facing some of these running backs. You guys have
done a tremendous job Derek Henry, Chris McCaffrey, Christian McCaffrey,
and last week at JK. Dobbins did a good job
on him overall, even Travis Etn in the first meeting
with the Jaguars.

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
What's the secret to that? Because you have Etn again
this week.

Speaker 11 (01:16:16):
I don't really think it's a secret, man. I think
it's just kind of what coach Demko says. Man, you
just do your job, you know, as long as you
do your one eleventh and you're making sure that you're
there for your brother and you're supposed to be in
this gap, supposed to hold this block. We kind of
play all together. So I think that's really the secret,
or that's the sauce, is just doing your job.

Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
Mark, what's the what's it like being in a room
with Rod Right Frank Okam, two defensive line coaches, you know,
you've been around Rod for a few years. Frank comes
in this year. But what's it like with those two
guys as your leaders.

Speaker 6 (01:16:44):
Oh, it's great man.

Speaker 11 (01:16:45):
With Frank being able to play six seven years in
the league, Rod as great as well, just always being
honest and always giving us the extra tips and extra
things that we need to be out there. So having
both of those two guys together has been great this year.

Speaker 3 (01:16:59):
What about this group of guys, because, like we said,
you've been on a few teams, You've been around a
lot of different D linemen. What's special about this group
because it seems special you could just see it from
the outside looking at I think a lot.

Speaker 11 (01:17:11):
Of people feel like their room is different, or their
room has a lot of talent, or their dogs as
we say. But I think of me being in the
year eleven, this is probably the room that I would
say there is no drop off. You can kind of
plug anybody in and you know they can play and
handle the ball, I mean handle their job very well.
And I would say the second thing is where this

(01:17:31):
group is very selfless.

Speaker 6 (01:17:33):
There's no selfishness in the room, right.

Speaker 11 (01:17:35):
We're always trying to help someone as soon as even
if we're jogging off the field and someone did something's like,
hey man, maybe you should use your hands like this
or look at this. And we always try to give
each other, you know, hints and things to get better.

Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
Mario, we think it you may have been Folly.

Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
We were talking about this in the offseason mini camp
Ota time and Shelling Ranks came back into the fold
and I remember it was a U or full He said, yeah, yeah,
we've all really played together with one another. How important
has that been that you guys have had chemistry even
before you got here to Houston and now you're playing
again with some of the same guys, Like you're playing

(01:18:10):
with Settle for the second year. You know, you're playing
with Foley for a second year. We getting back healthy?
What's that? What's that been like to have kind of
previous camaraderie that's kind of carried over here.

Speaker 1 (01:18:19):
How's that helped them?

Speaker 6 (01:18:20):
It kind of just feels like a fanily reunion.

Speaker 11 (01:18:22):
Man, when you get to see your cousins again or
you know you've been you've been going for so long,
you get to go hang out with them in the summer.
So just being with Rank with the with the Saints
and being with Foley with the Jags. Just kind of
knowing those guys as individuals, but also knowing how they
play is a big is a big advantage.

Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
This is an important question because had a couple of
olne injuries in the last game. So if it was
an emergency and one of the d linemen had to
play on the offensive line, Mario, would you want to
do that? Who else would be good at that on
the defensive line? Who could just switch over during a game?
You got to get in there, get in the trenches.

Speaker 11 (01:18:58):
I think it's a half of man. I wouldn't be uh,
I would do it. I think I think Timmy can
do it. I think Tommy could do it. I think
gg being six eight three forty yeah, I think I
had a handful of us could do it for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:19:13):
Somorrow. When you were in high school, what positions did
you play?

Speaker 11 (01:19:16):
I played receiver chuckle wait wait wait, wait you why
you chuckle? Because I was two fifteen my freshman year,
six one two forty my sophomore year, two seventy five junior,
and two eighty five my senior year. So my first
two years I was receiver in d N and then
my third year, I was d N and tight end
and then I just committed to defense after that.

Speaker 2 (01:19:38):
At that point, Wow, So you started at two fifteen
as a freshman.

Speaker 1 (01:19:43):
Holy smoked.

Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
So, Mario, you played at Florida State. You still follow
college football pretty closely.

Speaker 11 (01:19:50):
I followed them when they beat Bama, and I was
really really excited, and then I think I got too
excited because they lost to Miami, and you know, but
I try to watch it as much as possible.

Speaker 1 (01:20:01):
What do you think of the game today?

Speaker 3 (01:20:03):
With all the nil and guys transferring around, I mean,
and the coaches. It's just crazy right now with all
these buyouts going on.

Speaker 11 (01:20:10):
I think I think we're taking away a little bit
of a hunger. I think a lot of kids probably
now just going to college because they know they can
get paid. And I feel like when I was in college,
you were busting your butt with that little nine hundred
and thirty bucks in just busting your butt, praying for
your draft days so that you know what you could get.
But when these kids are getting half a million to

(01:20:33):
a million, two million dollars in college, it kind of
takes the hunger away a little bit. I mean, even
watching some of the combines. They you just got to
hear them say finish this, finish, finish, finish, finish, where
back in the day you tell one person to finish
and then if it was locked in, just the combines
look different, the play looks a little different.

Speaker 1 (01:20:49):
Interesting. I never heard it from that perspective.

Speaker 2 (01:20:52):
Before, no doubt, Martin. What was the experience like playing
at Florida State? Mark used to be the voice of
the Canes, so we always hear about Miami, and I
live in Jacksonville, so I got to see the Gators
play a lot. But I also got to hear from
my friends that were also big Seminoles fans, and I
went to one game in for Florida State nineteen ninety six.
It was one versus two. It was a big game.

(01:21:12):
Floorcea stated the winning that game, it was crazy. It's
crazy environment. But what was it like playing in Tallahassee
and playing for the Nose?

Speaker 6 (01:21:18):
It was great, man.

Speaker 11 (01:21:19):
There's nothing like running out of that tunnel and you're
hearing that war chain and yeah, the dope is just rocking.
And then you know when you actually get a chance
of watching it on TV, like nothing's lit up in
Tellassic but Dope so just knowing that everybody in that town,
that city is shut down to come and watch you,
and uh man, it was fun.

Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
What's it like when Osteola puts that spear in the ground?
I mean, is that just like a goose bumps?

Speaker 6 (01:21:44):
Got Yeah, that's that's that's that was fun.

Speaker 7 (01:21:47):
Man.

Speaker 11 (01:21:47):
That's kind of just like that last little almost all
the butterflies in your stuff, like it goes away once that,
once that spear goes in the ground.

Speaker 1 (01:21:55):
That is one of the greatest positions. It is so cool.

Speaker 6 (01:21:58):
All right.

Speaker 3 (01:21:58):
So, as a guy who's lived in Oakland and New
York and Chicago and Seattle, you're in Houston. Now, what
do you think of Houston as a city versus all
those other places that you've lived.

Speaker 6 (01:22:11):
I think Houston is great. Man.

Speaker 11 (01:22:12):
It's great because I live in Dallas. But it's also
great because, you know, before I came back to Houston,
I was on the West coast, North and all that stuff,
and I got away from that Southern hospitality. So to
get back here in Houston and get a little closer
to home and get that good Southern food, that Southern
hospitality was definitely great.

Speaker 1 (01:22:30):
Okay, we won't tell load this we won't tell this
right now.

Speaker 2 (01:22:35):
We won't tell lot what's the cheap meal when you
gotta sit down, like your season's over, you gotta worry
about wade or anything like that. If you got to
what's the one meal that you gotta have your cheap meal?
Once it's all said, Lads, like in the review mirror,
you're driving away, what's that meal you want?

Speaker 11 (01:22:52):
I'm a wings guy. I'm kind of control of the
wings for the away trips. I get about two hundred
wings from wingstoff realizing all that stuf.

Speaker 6 (01:23:00):
Uh, but I was.

Speaker 11 (01:23:02):
I can eat wings any any time of the day.
But I think being here in Houston, my favorite two
restaurants that I've been ordering from a lot has been
donal Letti's and Willie Gee's. Yeah, so I'm an Oyster's
got too, so I love the oysters at WILLI g.

Speaker 1 (01:23:14):
Oh, okay, all right, char grilled, I do both?

Speaker 6 (01:23:18):
I do both?

Speaker 1 (01:23:19):
Okay, sure, why not?

Speaker 6 (01:23:20):
Variety?

Speaker 1 (01:23:22):
Light o?

Speaker 6 (01:23:24):
Gotcha?

Speaker 1 (01:23:24):
Okay, Okay, good, I'm hungry.

Speaker 6 (01:23:26):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
Mario, thanks a love for joining us. Good luck this week.

Speaker 6 (01:23:29):
Thank you, Thank.

Speaker 1 (01:23:29):
You the best, absolutely love Mario Edwards Junior.

Speaker 2 (01:23:32):
Appreciate him stopping my congratulations again his work with with
veterans in the armed forces being saluted for that this week.
Congratulations Mario. Awesome stuff. Okay, Demiko Ryans went to the podium.
He had a lot of things that he needed to discuss.

Speaker 1 (01:23:51):
With the media.

Speaker 2 (01:23:52):
We'll have that for you next right here in Texans
All Access. We got one final segment of this edition
to Texans All Access from the Honday Texans Radio studio
before we turn over to Area forty five. They'll carry
you through the rest of the evening. But before we
turn it over to them, it's time to hear from
Demico Ryans. He met with the media today and there

(01:24:13):
are a number of different nuggets.

Speaker 1 (01:24:15):
We've talked about a lot of them thus far. The
status of CJ.

Speaker 2 (01:24:18):
Stroud, the injuries that the Texans are kind of going
through right now. And look, every team at this point
of the year is beat up a little bit into
Texans got beat up a bit in that Denver Broncos game.
So here's coach meeting with the media. Being first asked
about injuries being part of the game.

Speaker 12 (01:24:35):
Injuries are per football person injury rate in the game,
But do you feel like you're particularly named up more
so than other weeks. We have a few guys who
know unfortunately has some injuries throughout the game. Again, it
happens as the season goes along. It happens. It's what
a great opportunity for a lot of guys to step

(01:24:56):
up and showcase what they can do. You think you'll
be able to have stro or Howard this weekend? H
for where we are right now with the concussion protocol
to not see CJ playing this week?

Speaker 9 (01:25:07):
When you uh a nigga, So we're discussing things on
yestidation and trade dead Why yeah? What made you all
decide to stay where you all are as far as
the rosters and say, look, when it comes to the
trade deadline, it's because that transaction did not happen.

Speaker 12 (01:25:20):
It is not from a lack of effort. And of
course we tried to do several things. Just did it
paying out.

Speaker 4 (01:25:28):
I'm sorry, I I couldn't.

Speaker 10 (01:25:29):
R Yeah, CJ.

Speaker 7 (01:25:31):
CJ.

Speaker 10 (01:25:31):
Stroud will be out this week.

Speaker 12 (01:25:34):
But the you you guys go with Davis, with CJ
down and grandmothers Gonula be the backup I would gainst
you yep.

Speaker 9 (01:25:42):
Going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars team for the second time,
they added a wide receiving Chakobe Myriers from the Raiders
on yesterday. When you're watching him, what do you see
into the game to.

Speaker 12 (01:25:51):
Speak, Yeah, when I when I watched Jacksonville and what
they what they've done. Think it all everything starts for
me with the running game, Like they've done a great
job of running the football. Would show they ranting a
lot in their last game and they were successful at
it and they done.

Speaker 10 (01:26:05):
A really good job.

Speaker 12 (01:26:06):
So we have to put our focus first and foremost
on stopping the run. Knowing that they add it or
receiver Myers, smart player they plays in this league before
it can move all across the formation, play different spots.
So you know, we just have to really play our defense.
We're not focusing in on one player. It's just about
us playing our defense the right way. And when it
comes to their their defense are these guys do a

(01:26:28):
good great job of you know, just flying to the football,
attacking the ball. They've done a great job of turning
the ball over, playing physical and of course their edge
guys are held two of the best edge guys in
the league. So we have really good matchups there where
we have to win on the edges.

Speaker 13 (01:26:43):
How different are they or are they different from when
you guys faced them earlier in the season.

Speaker 12 (01:26:47):
I don't see much difference in the team I see,
you know, where a team is more committed to running
the football probably l if you wanna say that's the difference,
that's probably where I will see it.

Speaker 6 (01:26:57):
Big chub Uh practice as well.

Speaker 12 (01:27:00):
If you anticipate him having a shot to play out
Sunday or is this another one that might be more
long term.

Speaker 10 (01:27:04):
I will see what happens as the week goes on.

Speaker 2 (01:27:07):
Coach, can you take us through how your involvement this
season has kind of evolved in in the offense yea end.

Speaker 12 (01:27:16):
Day and for me UH as a head coach, I've
been involved in all phases of our team, where it's defense, offense,
special teams. Is UH being able to lean and give
my advice where where where needed, So it's trying to
help everybody out. At the end of the day, everything
falls on me, you know what we're doing. Everything is offense, defense,

(01:27:38):
special teams, all falls on me as the head coach.
So now we've done a thought, we've done a good job.
You know, collectively, I've been able to help out in
a lot of different areas, but overall, you know, we've
we've dropped some games. I feel like we should have
had that. We just gotta go out. We gotta coach better,
we gotta play better. All start with me, Allen Broud,
You still feel confident in Nick and turn the owner

(01:28:00):
and finding that game plan that you want and have
him having him play, uh call plays this because.

Speaker 10 (01:28:05):
We all, we all gotta do better.

Speaker 12 (01:28:08):
It's it's all encompassing and it's not one person, is
not one coach, it's everybody collectively involved in this together.

Speaker 10 (01:28:14):
We gotta do a better job.

Speaker 7 (01:28:16):
Though.

Speaker 13 (01:28:17):
Can you talk about Davison what you expect from him
before we could knowing he's gonna be starting on this weekend.

Speaker 12 (01:28:23):
Yeah, what I expect from Davis is to, you know,
do what he's done in the past. He's he started
games in his league before, so it's nothing new for him. Uh,
but it is a benefit for him being able to
get the reps, get the get the reps throughout practice,
getting the walk through, getting every single rep that he
can get, you know, getting on the same page with
the receivers, getting the the huddle, getting the snapcot, all

(01:28:47):
those little things right, getting the operation down the proper way.
He's done a good job of that. Today he did
our standing job. UH thought we were efficient in and
out of the huddle. Uh at the line of scrimants,
he did a great job of communicating. So I'm excited
to see, you know, David's go play.

Speaker 10 (01:29:03):
Follow up on that.

Speaker 12 (01:29:04):
What will you expect your offense to look the same
with him there? Or do you think it will change
a lot or will it not change at all?

Speaker 7 (01:29:10):
What you're doing?

Speaker 12 (01:29:11):
Well, what we do, we're gonna We're gonna do whatever
we need to do to try to move the football.

Speaker 6 (01:29:16):
I know we focus on the quarterback, especially you know
Davis coming in. How much will it be? How import
will be put the.

Speaker 11 (01:29:22):
Other guys around Davis un necessarily the legate they played,
but make sure that they're.

Speaker 9 (01:29:26):
Doing what they gotta do to make life easier for Davis.

Speaker 10 (01:29:30):
Everybody just has to do their job.

Speaker 12 (01:29:31):
Nobody needs to expect or try to step up and
do something different. If that's the case, what you've been
what if you been holding back? So I never look
at a game as, oh, y'all gotta do something different
because we have a new quarterback, and know if if
that's the case, then why are you out there? So
everybody just go out and play their game. Do what
they've been doing.

Speaker 10 (01:29:50):
Play with everything that you have, do your job, do
it really well.

Speaker 14 (01:29:54):
Because how have you seen Davis progress? You guys have
extended him to keep him here or be.

Speaker 4 (01:29:59):
A part of this.

Speaker 14 (01:30:00):
How do you see him progress in your time here?
Command of the offense, huddle overs thing.

Speaker 12 (01:30:05):
I've seen Davis grow and truly get better just playing
the position, being able to take his time going through his.

Speaker 10 (01:30:11):
Reads, Uh, going through it the proper way. I think.
I I've seen growth in that.

Speaker 12 (01:30:15):
Where he's really protected the football more, made better decisions
throughout training camp. I just like the like the progression
that I saw from where we were our first year
to where he is now.

Speaker 7 (01:30:26):
You go, you.

Speaker 15 (01:30:27):
Obviously decided to keep your roster as is? Why was
that case in in when it came to you all
decided that. Were you in agreement with Nick on that
on that decision?

Speaker 10 (01:30:38):
We just we just talked about that. Sorry, but yeah, agreement.

Speaker 7 (01:30:42):
With him on that.

Speaker 12 (01:30:44):
I'm I'm I'm sorry, I'm missing on what you said.

Speaker 15 (01:30:49):
Were you in agreement with the decision to keep the
roster as is?

Speaker 10 (01:30:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (01:30:52):
I said earlier, like It's not from a lack of trying.
It's the repeat I've said it, not from a lack
of trying that we didn't try to they trained or anything.

Speaker 10 (01:31:01):
Unfortunately, nothing panned out.

Speaker 5 (01:31:03):
For us for another repeater to well Neck call plays
this weekend?

Speaker 10 (01:31:08):
Why would he not call players?

Speaker 13 (01:31:10):
Take me what about when we when want talking about
DJ for the past few years?

Speaker 4 (01:31:14):
What tell us?

Speaker 13 (01:31:15):
What is it about uh Davis that maybe people don't
know or what do What is it about him that
makes you super confident in him leading the teams?

Speaker 12 (01:31:23):
FU Davis is a He's a super super smart guy,
sharp guy. Just seeing how he operates in a huddle
and they just seeing how he can fix things when
we're not all the way right. When guys are coming
out of the huddle, they have questions, Davis gets it
fixed very quickly. Uh articulates it very well in the huddle.
And now it's about post snap. Like post snap, can

(01:31:43):
we go through, can we make the proper reason, can
we get to the right spot with the football, and
can we just execute right what our l Davis doesn't
have to do too much right. We just all have
to do our job. Nobody has to step up do
anything different. Everybody just has to execute and do their job.
What they're what they're here for is to go out
and play good football. And that's all we're expecting them
to do.

Speaker 10 (01:32:03):
This Sunday, and start.

Speaker 13 (01:32:06):
With Matt right here in terms of having an insurance policy,
and Kamey says what he tells us about pay.

Speaker 10 (01:32:13):
Me and what do you know about Matt?

Speaker 12 (01:32:14):
Yeah, Kyami is dealing with uh a quad injury right now.
We'll see how he progresses. Right now, we have Matt.
Matt's been in the league, He's kicked ton of games.

Speaker 10 (01:32:22):
Uh, very good kickers.

Speaker 12 (01:32:23):
So we're excited to be able to get a guy
his caliber here.

Speaker 10 (01:32:27):
Uh, knowing that Amy will be down.

Speaker 16 (01:32:28):
So late turnovers decided plast game against the guyguars. What's
kind of the key this week to prevent those when
they've been able to turn the ball out over.

Speaker 7 (01:32:36):
So many times.

Speaker 12 (01:32:36):
Yeah, the kids always to just protect the football a right.
You have to be conscious of where these guys are,
especially you know, their back of twenty three does a
really good job of, you know, finding a way to
punch out the ball. So guys just have to be
conscious just making sure we're securing the ball all the
way to the ground and just having an awareness. Right,
it's most of the time when the ball is lost,
it's when guys aren't aware of their surroundings. We always

(01:32:58):
got to anticipate. These guys are coming after the football
every single snap. No one can let up or ease up.
We gotta finish every play with the ball.

Speaker 4 (01:33:06):
You've only faced him once as a head coach.

Speaker 5 (01:33:08):
Do you notice anything about maybe an identity of Liam
Cohen's as a as a play caller and his football team.

Speaker 12 (01:33:15):
Oh, look, Liam has done a great job of how
they call it and having multiple plays at the line
of scrimmage, uh, trying to get into the.

Speaker 10 (01:33:23):
The proper look.

Speaker 12 (01:33:24):
You'll see a lot of alerts where you know whether
it's one high too high. They have their alert package
there and they've they've done it a good job. But
think Trevor's done a really good job at the line
of scrimmage, really communicating getting the offense and the best
play UH possible.

Speaker 10 (01:33:37):
So they're there.

Speaker 12 (01:33:38):
You can see, you know, Liam's imprint on the offense.
You can see how he's helped Trevor and you can
see how they're moving the football scoring points.

Speaker 10 (01:33:46):
When when CJ is cleared whenever that may be.

Speaker 15 (01:33:49):
How do you factor in a guy's history with concussions
when deciding whether to put him back.

Speaker 7 (01:33:54):
On the field.

Speaker 12 (01:33:56):
Well, when every guy is, you know different when it
comes to the concussion sins. I'm always sensitive to the
fact that it's a it's a serious injury. So I
don't think there is never a rush to get a
guy back. It's whenever he's capable, whenever he's ready to
be back. We're gonna be as smart and as diligent
as possible to make sure his health and safety is first.
For first and foremost topic.

Speaker 10 (01:34:17):
Is Titus Howard out for this week.

Speaker 6 (01:34:19):
Two to do the conusion program?

Speaker 12 (01:34:20):
Yeah, Titus is still in the concussion protocol. We'll see
see how that goes.

Speaker 1 (01:34:25):
Just to clarify, you said Kami will be down.

Speaker 4 (01:34:27):
If I heard you correctly, do you anticipate him not playing.

Speaker 10 (01:34:29):
Then or no, I do not.

Speaker 16 (01:34:35):
There's been some animosity between these two teams over the
past two matchups. Just kind of what do you feel
the the reason is for that? And also like, how
do you make sure that those extracurricular activities kind of
aren't going on?

Speaker 12 (01:34:47):
I don't I don't feel any animosity unless you know
I'm missing something. Uh, But we're going out. We're going
out to play our game. We're gonna play a tough,
physical game. That's who we are. We don't change it
just because of who we play. Doesn't ramp up because
of the opponent. Like we have a style of play
here in Houston, how we play, and that's what we'll
do every time we step on the grass.

Speaker 10 (01:35:07):
It doesn't matter where we play. All right, Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:35:09):
Guys, no doubt about it. Coach is right. Just gotta
go play whatever you got. We'll figure it out. I
remember nicking Dimiko said that all of twenty twenty three,
and they did.

Speaker 1 (01:35:19):
They figured it out. They're gonna have to figure it
out on Sunday. They will.

Speaker 2 (01:35:23):
I got the trust in them and hopefully they will
get a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. A big thanks
to Dimico, to Mario Edwards Junior, to Frank Franjie, to
Mark Vandermier, to all you for listening. We thank you
so very much that we can be here and talk
some football talk about the Texans. Thank you again for listening.
Tell my guys back at Sports Radio six to ten.

(01:35:44):
Thank you very much. Area forty five. Like I said,
is up next. Keep it locked right here on Sports
Radio six to ten. We'll see tomorrow, Buddy, and as always,
go Texans.
