Hello Texans, Welcome to this show. We are in the
midst of rookie camp today and tomorrow here at the
Houston Methodist Training Center n RG Stadium, and we are
going to talk about it. We're going to talk about
the rooks, saw them in action. So let's get to it.
Mark Vandermere and John Harris with you. And this is
why you're here, isn't it to hear about how these
guys look today? And first off, Johnny, we have to

say this, there aren't enough guys to.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Go eleven on eleven squad and all this other stuff.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
And obviously the listeners know because they're educated, that you're
not going to ever have pads this time of year,
for sure. But there was a time there was maybe
there were a few times in the history of this
franchise where you could maybe put together an eleven on
eleven situation in a rookie camp. Twenty thirteen comes to mind,
when they had forty five guys. We always talk about that,
just a massive practice. Looked like the entire team was there.

(00:49):
Twenty thirteen. Yeah, that was case Keenum, a solid Kleine
from ky State as the quarterbacks. And that's when koup
I said, hey, Keenum's pushing the first two, which was
Shab and Yates And obviously Cases had a nice career
for himself. He's still Lady's in Chicago right now. But anyway,

you didn't have enough guys to do eleven out eleven.
We saw individual work. We saw them on the hoof.
As you like to say, I want to I want
to start here. What is.

The headline for you?

If if it's a person, I give you either one player,
one headline, one thought.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
That's the biggest takeaway of the day.

And I know we have many more, but I want
to start there with you because I know you were
in the nitty gritty of it today out there.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
My man wood he marks okay, looks good on the hoof?
Does he not? Yeah? He does? He does? He does?
He not?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I saw him and look, I got a chance to
see all all the the top five picks. I saw
him all at the Senior Bowl, so I got a
chance to kind of be down on a field and
size him up and you know that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
But seeing Woody again today.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Just watching like that's that's a running back build man,
thick you know, thick trunk legs.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
But and look, I know it's on air. I get
all that.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
But we've seen over the years when there are running
backs in this building.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
And I'm not saying the guys we have now.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
I think all the guys we have now, between Mix
and Damien Darre, you know, JJ Juar, they all catch
the ball really well. Yeah, this cat's at a different
level catching football like you just you just watch like
and this goes for the whole group. I think there
was maybe one ball in the ground. I don't remember
seeing the ball on the ground. And look, I know
it's on air. Yeh, I get that, So take it

with a grain of salt. But I'm comparing it to
other years. There was a year when it was the
full squad at OTAs and there were balls being thrown everywhere.
We know what year, the sign twenty sixteen, and it
was everywhere.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
It was give it a minute, He's just give it
a minute.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
I know I was panicking, like so taking the grainy salt.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yeah, but I thought Graham, Graham, Mertz and Keaton threw
it very very well.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I was very impressed with just watching.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Graham throw the football, you know, just kind of tracking
his career Wisconsin.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
He was supposed to be the guy, and it didn't
turn out that.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Way goes to Florida, the DJ Lagway shows up, so
everybody wants to see DJ, and he's kind of shunned
to the side. But then Merch would have to come
in and save some games until he towards a CEO
and then it was like, oh, but he left the cupboard,
you know where Lagway could pick it up and go
with it. And Floor started winning some games and started
looking like the program. People thought it was gonna be.
So Graham done some good things. But when you watch

what he catch the ball, and not only that, when
you watch him run those running back routes and look
this simple little flat route and just kind of check
down all that, but when you watch him run the
circle routes and just kind of option routes where he's
got a freeze linebacker and then you know, he shakes
you one way like and he goes the other way,
and you're like, god, dang, that's quick. So just how
comfortable he is is catching the ball. Now, my eyes

(04:03):
are not as good, but this had to be like
an hour after practice, I was up in a cafetier
and I looked out to the field and I was
pretty sure that was him catching balls and.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
The drugs gun. Wow, here we go. Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
So you know, he's just.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Like warms my heart. But that was he was the
first one to kind of stand out.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
And I always loved Danny Berry always gets like one
rookie that he gets to deal with.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
You know, last year was jure Tour. Well he did
at British too. He had to last year. Yeah, but
he had just Woody this year.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
And it's kind of like that for every position Steam
had of Okay, Steven had one guy.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
He's guys have a private tutor out there. It's like
one on one tutoring.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
It's like going to a private school, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Off the lineman, there were three. I'll tell you this.
I actually went down. I was able to kind of down.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Where I was was the offensive defensive line and my man,
Junior Tafuna, who is an undrafted free agent signed out
at Utah and I remember seeing him at Senior Bowl
and up next to some of the like tall offensive
lineman the Senior Bowl, I kind of got the thought that,
you know, he's kind of short, he's not look, he's

(05:15):
not he's not big, he's not tall, I should say right,
but he is stout. He's like he looks at a thrick.
He looks like a brick that's standing like just this
big rectangle. Yea and strong. Junior Tafoon is the kind
of guy that he's gonna get third and fourth quarters
along with Count de Hamilton. Those two are gonna play together,
I would imagine in the fourth quarter third fourth quarters

(05:36):
of preseason games and one of if not, both are
gonna make some noise.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
And I know Count was drafted and Tafun was not.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
But Tafuna got some pretty good guaranteed money from all
indications so he could play. I've watched him for a
number of years at Utah and that dude like size wise, Wow,
I didn't see, you know, the defensive lineman where you know,
look they're they're bags. They're not doing a whole lot.
But I saw one once where just kind of flipping

(06:06):
back and forth. I kind of kept missing erseres reps
because I watched the receivers and watch the receivers, and
I was watched the linebackers and kind of go around
and watch the e linean a little bit and look over.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Oh, I kept missing. I saw ersery shove somebody around.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
I was like, god, dang, Like the power that we
talked about is, oh, it's it's there now. He's got
legs kind of the size of mine but upstairs, like
holy cow.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
I mean, he just strong, strong as can be.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
So as long as his legs don't look like mine
were in good shape, yeah, okay.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
But man, you talk about it a large He was
standing next to Eli Cox and uh Ladarius Henderson. Those
are not They're shorter guys, but they're not small urseries
like up here and they're down here like he's enormous.
And I remembered that from this your bowl. Of course
he's seen him many times. Like he's a large man,

like a very very large man.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
I do think that.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
And as strong as he is, I do think that
some work with our strength conditioning staffs. You know.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
It's funny.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
I was listening to Sean Seth talk about that this morning,
thinking about what JJ Watt looked like as a rookie
when he came in here, and then what he looked
like just the very next year.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
It was like, holy crap.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Henry Toto like Sylvester Stallone from Rocky one to Rocky two,
and three.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yes, transition. Henry talked about that with us.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
He talked about how his body transition from year one
of year two and how much that mattered.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Why not just the training.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
It's also I gotta think it's you're twenty one, twenty
two to twenty three, your body changes.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Yeah, yes, it's a great point and I think that
and look for Ersari. He didn started playing football till
late in his high school career, so he still got
some more of that to not only learn, but I
can imagine a Now I'm not saying that I don't
want them to play this year, but I'm just thinking
about already year two of what he could look like
once he gets with Mike and our strength staff and

(08:09):
they get rolling our strength staff, they know what the
hell are doing, Like they're good. Yeah, they are always
working with guys on different things. I mean, we hear
it all the time on the hallway, but just the
games that you see from guys, even when you see
them every day in the building, You're like, dang, look
at such and such.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Holy count he's got bigger. I remember Stingley, Remember.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Sting Yeah, sting was like, holy crap, what happened from
year one to year two, you know, and now he's
maintained that.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
So I think it's a theme though with this class,
and as this organization evolves, guys they bring in, the
young guys they bring in, they just look thicker.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
You know, there's something about them.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Yeah, because I've seen rookies come in here and they
look like it's not like skin and bones, but they
just don't look like the way these guys did today,
by and large, And what he marks did pop to me.
I mean, I thought, you know what he marks. He's
listed at two ohay, all right, five ten. Now when
you say that, you're like, okay, whatever, But when you
see it on him where the weight is distributed, you said,

(09:09):
you know, Charlie Casley, he's got good loa. Yeah, because
he's got the big button thighs. You know, he looks
like in every down back, you know, we think our
receiving running back, he'll be like a stat back kind
of got yeah. Yeah, I sure he caught all these passes.
Don't be surprised if he's carrying the rock. Ladies and gentlemen.
What he marks is thick. He can run and he
can catch, and I think, you know, we don't know

(09:31):
until we see it. All we have today is rookies
against rookies. So we're not getting carried away. This is
what we're evaluating. I want to just set that up
right now, that we're not anointing anybody into the.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Pro Bowl whatever former coach used to say.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
We're not gonna put him in Canton. Yes, yet, we're
not doing anything like that. We're just encouraged by some
of the things we saw. And you want to build
these guys up because you want them to perform. You
want to see what happens here. You want to be
like that guy sucked today. Nobody sucked today. Look, it's
not even in a couple of weeks. When we see
them against the veterans, we're gonna say things like, look

(10:05):
like he belongs. You can't say that today because it
looked like he belonged with the other rookies. Okay, great,
there are other rookies, but you want they are the
best of the best. Thirty two teams around the league
are having rookie camps, and you want to they're the
best of the best of their class in college, and
they want to come in here and look like they
belong at least with the other guys, and you'll see

(10:26):
which ones rise above the others. I'm gonna throw out
a name, okay, and we'll talk about all. We'll talk
about all of them. But the one player that to
me flashed above all else where you're going is Jalen Knowles.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah. I'm glad you exactly quick. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
And you know, look Higgins, big, strong, physical, you know,
you talk about how his body looked and everything. I'm
curious to see how that evolves because he looks pretty
well put together right now. There's no doubt. He's six',
four you, know massive, guy. Real he was great with
the media. Today noel just looks so, spread you, know

(11:06):
just quick, gear shifting in and out of the, breaks great,
hands all of. It can't wait to see it against actual.
Competition but you, know for a rookie CAP i was
it confirmed all THAT i wanted to see.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
TODAY i know What i'm about to, SAY i know
is gonna be, like, okay so OH i can.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
When Tank dell get the football when he was a,
rookie like when he would go through his freaking mute,
camember When tank catches.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
The ball on, air he's running.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Drills tank's got a different gear of acceleration than anybody,
Else like.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Gravity doesn't affect him as.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Much, Right that's the Way jalen looks when he catches
the football and turns up the, field like there's a
different level of. Acceleration, look there's speed and there's, acceleration
and having taught, physics knowing the, difference you look out
there and, Go, okay these guys are, fast and that's.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Fine but when you have a guy that accelerates the.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
Way That jalen, Does and it was in PARTICULAR i
noticed it when he was he'd catch a hitch or
he would catch a slant and then, boom he'd have
to get up the. Field like that Was tank like.
Explosiveness the thing, IS i think those two play, Differently
LIKE i Think jalen's more of a slot, guy WHEREAS
i Think tank is more of an outside.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Guy i've said that for three years.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Now but you See jalen catch the ball and you're,
like id, dang like catch. It like you just said
that explosiveness out of his, BREAKS i think his routes
are very very, linear like straight, line straight, line and
that's the way you're supposed to run.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Him the one thing he'll have to. Learn AND i
think you.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Talk to every receiver like there's a way the route
looks up on the whiteboard and it looks straight, lineish
they're gonna have to be. This, well you, KNOW i
kind of bent this ro out this way because the
safety was doing this and the linebackers doing, this SO
i kind of had to. Adjust those are the things
that that the rookies will have to have to learn for.
Sure But, jalen now when he caught the, football, wow

like holy, smokes, yeah and they snatched. It sean, said
have been talking about his drop, rate And i'm, like
drop rate from op?

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Rate that.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Dude you can just see his hands. TAKING i thought
this at The Senior bowl. Too they were working a
drill in the. Sidelines they were working a sideline, drill
so they were running like a twelve yard like speed,
out like a like a sail, route and so the
quarterback would throw the ball such that the receivers would
have to toe, tap, catch, catch and toe, tap so
they would put the ball on a certain. Spot so
every Time jalen, went quarterback will throw it perfectly and

(13:40):
he would snatch it ball like at helmet, height thumbs, together,
down snatched the ball toe tap like every. Time he
did it. Perfectly some guys are trying to body. Catch
you get an ail bow, up like trying to catch
him body you, know do all. That jalen's catching it
with him like, MAN i JUST i didn't see that
in him at, all that drop, rate like he snatched the,
football and you could see that, today like snatch the.

(14:02):
Ball but one thing That, I'll I'll i'm not gonna
Say i'm, wrong But Jadan higgins And Nico collins they're
not perfect facsimiles of one. Another like you see a
lot of the same things in. Both nico's a little
thicker all the way. Throughout, Okay jayden's a little thinner
in the lower. Body but same. Thing, listen, listen close

(14:29):
your eyes and listen to them catch the ball. Practice
guys with bad, hands it's just like it's like this big, thudd,
yeah you. Know but guys that have soft hands like he,
does it's just kind of absorbed into his. Hands it's
just really. Smooth it doesn't make a big. Sound AND
i even Thought Daniel, jackson THE udfa from out Of,
MINNESOTA i thought he did some good things. Too it

(14:50):
was only those three at the receiver. Position but When noel,
changed When jalen changed direction and then took the next,
step it was Like, dick it was so much power
generated out of that it was it was really.

Impressive let's just put it this. Way we've seen all
the receivers, here, Right.

Nico we've SEEN i, mean going back To DeAndre hopkins
when he got. DRAFTED i Remember Andre johnson's rookie camp
and EARLY ota, stuff And i'm not putting him in that.

That but certain guys this time of, year when they're making,
plays they tend to make. Play and, look you're not
making plays, today you're on, air And i'm eager to
see nol AND i mean everybody But Nolan higgins when
we get to the eleven on eleven And.

OTAs i, MEAN i just want to see. IT i
want to see.

How they fit in because it's very promising from what
you saw. Today It higgins made a nice one one
handed catch. Today that was cool With. Nico it's funny
BECAUSE i remember early on he just plays so much
faster THAN i thought he. Might you, know he plays
so fast in real time IN nfl games he's got.

FASTER i think it's gotten. Better you, know we put
up a Throwback thursday yesterday Of mills throwing To nico
for his first Touchdown chargers against The, chargers and they

guys and between the, TWO i think at least one

there's not gonna be much drop off in, speed acceleration
and how they get their. Rust, now there are gonna

be some things THAT cj when he throws the ball
to him In, davis when he throws the ball to,
them he's.

There they're gonna probably, want you, know just what they're used.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
To AND i think as soon as they make some
of those, adjustments it's gonna get really fun when they
can go one on. One and we will have to
wait till training. CAMP i believe for that BECAUSE i
don't think WE i THINK i don't think they do
one on. ONES i think they do team, stuff BUT
i don't think they do one on ones during OT's mini.

CAMPS i don't know if that's allowed. ANYMORE i think
they can continue to change the rules and throttle. Down
it's always.

CHANGED i think training camp you mentioned third and fourth
quarters of preseason, games really looking forward to those just
because you see these guys and you're gonna be on
the on the air ON tv With Kevin coogler And
End kalou talking about those storylines and the development of
these players and training camp. Practices you, KNOW i don't
care what level of the depth chart it is out.
There to, me it's all going to be interesting with

these young, players and you know last year's bunch included
like how they continue to.

Develop but those are some early on.

Headlines Woody marx looks physically, impressive but he's got to
be out there with these guys and you're not going
to know all about him until you get to training
camp and sea games. HEALTHY i think there are reps
that he had, here you know you. HAVE i was
on With Nate griffin this morning On fox twenty, six
AND i think we've talked about it here as. Well
there are gonna be reps to be, won And Woody

marks probably sees, that you, know mixing can't do it.
All you want peers to rise up and be or
like twenty twenty two. Peers we all know that with
This Nick, Caley Kole, popovich whatever they implement with the
running game. System but what He mark says to, Himself,
HEY i want to get in there.

TOO i want to get in that. Mix MAYBE i
can get some of these.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Reps MAYBE i can get some Of, Damiens MAYBE i
can get some Of darigunbowal's.

Reps if they don't want to run them all the,
time they want to save them for some. Things we'll
see how that. Goes because he looks like he's up
for the. Job but, again you got to go do.

Rookie, well who got ten minutes today Practice Frank ross's special.
Teams and, look some of these guys might end up
having to earn it that. Way AND i say that
because there were some guys on that and they were
working just punt kind of punt. Technique, yeah and some
of those guys might have to earn it that.

Way they might earn a spot that.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Way, YEAH i mean the famous you, know Twelve davis
went The hall Of, fame but Twelve davis almost didn't
even get out of training camp up in A japan,
right and they're not even getting, carries touches. Anything he
runs down on a kickoff and he blasts this dude
from the forty nine ERS i think it.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Was blast him and everybody goes.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Crazy they give him a few carries in the fourth
quarter And shanon's, like, hey, wow, uh next, week a
little bit, more a little bit, more a little bit.
More before you know, what Til davis becomes A hall Of. Famer,
now not every story's gonna end up that, way but
it might end up you having an eight to ten
year career because as a rookie you went down and
flew down on special teams and did something that caught

everybody's attention and you were able to just stick around
for how many ever years for.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
That what Did arian do on special? Teams he did some.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
Stuff SEE i don't remember he had to him because
OH i think.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
So, yeah he was on the practice, squad so that
means they literally cut him after. Camp, yeah he was
available for anybody to Get they got him back here
the practice squad eventually got him on the active roster
and did some special teams and Against miami second or
last week of the, season give him a few, carries
he blows up right. Starts the next, week they win the,
game he has two touchdowns on the fourth, quarter and

the rest is history because he opens the next season
with two hundred and thirty one.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yards that's that's the one that and, LOOK i Thought
Ben tates did some good things, here but there are
always a few WHERE i, Think like the other other,
day we talked ABOUT pff when they did their redraft
of two thousand and, six like the butterfly effect of
drafting at number. One who they said who they would
redraft Is Andrew, Whitworth, like what's the butterfly effect of?

THAT i always think about that With arian what's the
butterfly effect of what if he does it two games?
Sooner so he does and has like a you, know
three game stretch of one hundred, yards a four game
stretch is seventy five.

Plus where they're, like you know, what he is the.

Guy he's gonna be the guy for twenty, ten and
we've got more information that shows us we should stick
with that. Guy so you know, what instead Of Ben,

COMBO i think it's important they have to Draft Ben
tate insurance if nothing, Else but you want two guys
to work. Out because what happened in the beginning of
the twenty eleven, Season arian wasn't available because the hamstring,
injury the lack of awesomeness or whatever he said in
that tweet where he put the picture out. There Ben
tait Starts week one against The colts, again and he
doesn't go for two thirty, one but he goes for

a one to fifty something and they, win And arian's
available week two or, three and they're often running in twenty.

ELEVEN i, MEAN i was twenty eleven the best season
in the history of this.

Franchise, maybe, yeah he put it, out he put it.
Out they didn't like. That an didn't like. That that's
