Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's happened? Everybody? Happy Friday to all of you out there.
We are less than forty eight hours away from Texans Jaguars.
Part to the revenge factor, Yes, revenge is on the brain,
well at least on this brain, John Herrits Football and
outside of the reporter and the brain of the voice
(00:20):
of the Texans, Mark vandermir Mark. I know we shouldn't
talk about revenge, so to speak, but I want this one.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
For a number of reasons on Sunday. How about you, Okay,
list the reasons. Give me the top two reasons other
than we need to get a victory in.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
The worst way possible.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
But why Johnny, Because after the win, after they got
the win in Jacksonville, they just unloaded the clip yeah
of social media.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Look at us, We're so great.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
I mean, I always go back to twenty seventeen after
they had ten sacks here and they were like, we're Saxonville,
and I was like, all right, they lasted for a year.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Let them have their moment though. Yes, that was a
nice little moment for them. And since it's over, there's
nothing you could do, but tomorrow you can inflict some
pain on that you can and they had some doubts
going into that Raider game. And look, if the Raiders
get a two point conversion at the end, they kind
of look like idiots a little bit for the way
they handle overtime. Yeah, and by kind of, I mean
that would have been a major talking point on all
(01:22):
the national shows, and it almost was. Anyway that Liam
Cohne took the ball first. We want to run out
the clock. Really, how many ten minute drives do you see?
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:30):
This team had a nine and a half minute drive
against San Francisco to open the game.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
But Johnny, it's a hard thing to get a ten
minute drive.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
In fact, if you're having a lot of success on offense,
you'd have to slow yourself down to make it a
ten minute drive.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Right, This is a good idea.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Let them have the ball first, even the Texans nine
and a half minute drive had that been an overtime,
and I know that's a weird universe we're looking at
right now, you still have thirty seconds at the end
to do something. It's crazy to take the ball first
in this day. I just think so. But it ultimately
worked for that because the Raiders, lucky for the Jags,
went for two. Had they kicked and gotten the tie. Well,
(02:10):
game over here we.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Are, Yeah, I I thought the Raiders handle it well actually,
because they going for two. They had an open wide
receiver in the back corner of the end zone. He's
wide open. Yeah, and Von Hamilton just gets his hand
up and knocks it down. But I just just had
we held on last week and they Devon Hamilton doesn't
(02:33):
get his hand up there.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
We're both four and four. Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
And the difference is, you know, Josh heinz Allen knocking
the ball a CJ's hand as it goes forward and
Antonio Johnson gets on it, et cetera.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
So but every week we say this, I know, And.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
You know it's so funny you said that, because I
was driving up here this morning, I was thinking the
same thing.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I'm tired of saying that, Like I wrote my By
the numbers.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
We've played four games at home correct Tampa Bay, Tennessee
and San Francisco, Denver.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
We've had we're two and two.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, we lost two games by a total of four points. Right,
We've won two games by a total of thirty seven
point differential. I mean, that's why we're ninth in the
league and in point differential.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Right, and in close games since you pointed this out
last year, since they beat who they beat Indianapolis in
Week eight, and since then from that point forward, in
close games, the Texas are two to nine in close
in one score games, that is.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Not even single digit. I'm talking eight points or less.
And they've lost all five this year by eight points.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Are obviously a strong negative trend that they have to
do something about it. Can I interest you in a
number from the last meeting?
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Please do significant, Please do so?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
You numbers last time Chub and Marx Chubb four point
two yards per carry, Mark's four point five yards per carry,
but Chubb nine carries Woody Mark six.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Now, this was a close game, as we all know.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Third down, you weren't great, you weren't subterranean, you weren't
zero for seven in the second half. But I look
at that and I think, can they hold on the ball?
And I know the line has some patchwork.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
To do here.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, and that's gonna exactly how that's gonna look, but
it's gonna look different. But I think there are some
opportunities here. And get this, Johnny, I'll add to it. Okay,
ETN three point five yards per carry, bayshell tooton three
point five yards per carry. You actually did a pretty
decent job against the run last time. And the Jags,
I know they're third in the league against the run,
(04:30):
but I think that if you can, if and it
might be a big if, can get some third downs
to get more running opportunities, maybe you can do something
here on the ground.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
It ends up being seventeen to ten Jaguars if Nico
doesn't fumble. There was about I think we were about
three minutes left when that happened. You probably are gonna
have the opportunity. I think you could have gotten another
first down. You could have run the clock all the
way out when I think thirteen to ten in a
fair baron last second.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Field goal, Oh possibly possible with another first down, Yeah, possible.
Or you have to kick it because now it's third
and you know, fourth and six or something, and you're
not gonna go for it.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
But now you defend the field and if they get
the field goal, I mean, it's.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
A totally different situation with the lead.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Now they're feeling the pressure because they got the ball
in a tie game after the Nico fumble, and then
they went down the field and they hit the big play.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
They were a touchdown. Okay, I mean that's something that
irks to Miko.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
It's okay, number one defense in the league, great red zone,
you blow coverage.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Gotta be much better, you know.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
The coverage is one thing that just got him in
the range, in range to score in the red zone.
But they have not been what they need to be
in the red zone defensive. That said, look, I'm not
going to come down on the defense. My gosh, they're
doing a tremendous job. But he doesn't like that. He
wants perfection.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
He does.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
He demands perfection from them, and look he Demiko wants
it from the offense too. I think people are like, well,
you know, he kind of treats him a kick. No,
he doesn't. I can promise you'd just different. Yeah, exactly
behind closed door, closed doors.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
That's the thing all coaches Koubiak was so nice, so friendly.
He probably got after it. By probably, I mean I've
heard stories. Yeah, got after them on a variety of things,
and rarely, you know, not unfair wise, but you know,
in a fair way, would chew them out.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
We get after that.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
There were plenty of donkey barbecues behind closed doors. Yeah,
so you know, take take that for what it is.
But wait a second, go back to one thing for me. Yeah,
you mentioned oh for seven last week in the second half.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Well that was last week, Okay. I thought you meant.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
I thought you meant against Jaxville because I was gonna
on top of we went over seven and second avagants
the Jagts. We were oh for seven or oh for
eight last week against the Broncos on third down. That
can that that just cannot be. I looked up at
one point and I saw that we had seventeen third
down opportunities, Like that's an insane number.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Okay, So they weren't oh for seven, and the second
half again to the Jags, they were one for seven,
which is pretty bad because they were three for nine
in the first half. They end up going four for fifteen,
so or one for six or whatever. So not good
on third down in the second half. Yet you have
the ball in plus territory four times if you want
to count the possession of the fifty that was a
(07:18):
one play drive four times in the second half, and
you come away with three turnovers at a touchdown. So Look,
that game is over. We all know it, Jaggs. Is
the turnover margin that they have, they're third in the league.
Is that ranking up a gayzy? I don't know. They
get after the ball, so give them credit for being
plus eight. But you kind of hang out of that rock,
(07:39):
Davis Mills. You have to hang out of that rock.
Running backs and receivers, we cannot give them freebies in
this one. You're at home. It's last house on the
left time. Look you you park another number in the
L column right now, and you basically have to run
the table. We all know that you can afford to
lose two more times. This can't be one of them.
You still have games with Buffalo, Kansas City, the Chargers
(08:02):
on the road that colts twice. Who knows how good
they are. We'll find out personally. You cannot afford to
have this one be one of those l's.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
And I don't know if it gets you in. Let
let's say that you do that, you do put one
on the L. Come then the mock draft simulators are
getting cranked up.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Yeah. Probably.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
And look I've already done, Johnny. I've never putting up
the white flag. You know that, I know I know
exactly you could go.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You get to seven losses, I'm not putting up the
white flag till it's over.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
And I don't want it to be over because this
team is good enough to go on a run. It is.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
It's good enough to go on a run, but it
needs better offensive execution. Demiko, everybody and their brothers pointed
that out. Stevie Wonder can see it. This offense needs
to be better. You can't have eight trips into the
red zone and have one touchdown.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
You know what the beautiful thing is about that Stevie
Wonder joke. He kind of likes jokes like that. Yeah,
he's in favor of them. Remember he did the Saturday
Night Live. He did the camera commercial, the parody. It's like,
camera is so simple, even Stevie Wonder, and it's Stevie
Wonder using the camera. He's like and it's all he's
taking pictures of people's feet and it's hilarious and he's
clearly and I'm the joke and loves it. So good
(09:14):
for him. I thought i'd point that out before people
come after you. I got one more thing for you here,
Davis Mills right or wrong. So he's got twenty five
stars in this league, two and one against the Jags
all time. We could throw out all the numbers. He
has never taken the field in a start with a
team this good. Correct, He's never had this corotive team
around him offensively. You know, he's had some good players.
(09:37):
He's had Cooks, He's had Nico, but it was younger Nico.
But it was Nico, you know, young baby Nico making
some plays. And Will Anderson said that Demiko was showing
the guy's plays that Mills had made previously, to show
everybody Mills can throw the rock. You know, they if
you show him the second half against the Titans, show Yeah,
in twenty one, you show him. I don't know if
(09:59):
you show the game. I don't know if you're showing
the last play what at twenty two, twenty two?
Speaker 1 (10:05):
No, but you show everything up to that. Because remember
that Gho shop. He had three throws a Viriano that
were just brilliant.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
He did hit the fourth and whatever it was to
Cooks on the sideline was brilliant.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Right in front of me. I was like this, I mean,
it was as good a throw as I saw him make.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
The best team he's had a round It's so funny
you bring this up because I was sitting there watching
practice today and I was like, Okay, Davis. Davis last
started a game in twenty twenty two, and it hit me.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
I was like, how would the twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Two How would whatever offense they're going to trot out
on Sunday due to injuries and things, how would that
offense fare going against are the twenty twenty two team? Like,
what would Davis Mills led twenty twenty five offense look
(10:58):
like against a only twenty two Texans defense or defense?
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Or how about that schedule they played? Yeah, I mean,
you know, take your pick a little bit better.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
I think.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
I mean, if you have ed Ingram and Titus Howard
in this game, if if you had those two in
this game, which you're not going to, but if you
had those two in this game, you got all your
receivers back healthy, you got Dalton fighting through some stuff,
but Dalton's ready to go. You have your running backs,
you'd have your offense other than CJ. You'd have Davis
(11:27):
stepping in. I would feel I don't want to say
the ultra confident, but I would feel a lot better.
My biggest thing is just not having that right side
of your line potentially, and that that to me, is
the biggest thing for Davis against this pass rush, because
that means whoever you put over there is facing more
than likely treymon Walker. Now you might be josh Hanes Allen.
(11:50):
They might move Hinz Allen over to the other side
and just say, you know what, Ershree's gotten better, but
the guy over the right side's new. So lot of
things that you're gonna be ready by I start thinking
about that. Actually today as I was watching, I just
I have confidence that Davis will he doesn't get rattled.
I mean, we see that on him. We've seen it
(12:11):
on him since his rookie heear in twenty twenty week.
It doesn't get rattled no matter what the situation is.
And I felt like what happened in the second half,
there were two moments that I feel like, with more
opportunities to play, I think Davis would have hit the
throat a Dalton across the middle, and I think he
would have hit the throw to Kirk, And those are
not The Shultz throw is a little bit easier to
(12:33):
a little.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Bit tighter throw. The throw to Kirk is a tough one.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
But I think if he's playing regularly, I think he
makes those throws because you get in a good rhythm.
You know, you've been playing for a few weeks. You've
probably run that route a few times, so you make
the adjustment if you missed it. Whatever. I think if
the Texas were to go back to those throws, I
think he makes them on Sunday as long as he
has time. And it's not as if the Jaguars are
(12:56):
in the world on fire with sacks, but they get pressure.
And that was exactly with Josh heinz Allen did in.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
The first game.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
I want to get an easy completion for him really
early in this one, just to get him comfortable, like
I made a completion, Let's keep it going. Get a
confidence making completion. R either that, Johnny or play action.
I've played number one and let it rip.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
I need listen. Can you imagine that? You know my philosophy.
When you have a new quarterback, a young quarterback, and
an inexperienced quarterback, a quarterback hasn't played. Within the first
three throws of the game, I'm throwing one deep just
to let.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Him get that arm.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Absolutely doubt, because you know he's wound up tighter than it.
You know what, and you just when you throw it deep, Yeah,
they can pick it off, but okay, it's an early
arm punt. Yeah, but most times it's way beyond the
wide receiver. But you've gotten all that anngst out. You're like, oh,
it's like you grunt and throw.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
It as far as you can. You've gotten all that
angst out.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
If you hit it and it becomes a big play,
it can change the game early and now he's got confidence.
And then if you hit it, now the defensive backs
are like, man, we got to back up a little bit.
But you get all the angst out, you get all the
anxiety out. You have a chance to hit a big play.
There's really no loss. Really. If they pick it off,
it's fifty something yards down the field, go on and
(14:14):
make a tackle. Okay, it's the first drive of the game.
But now the quarterback's gotten all that out. If you
just have these little like ink ink ink, just little
dinky throws, you're just still bottled up with all that anxiety.
It isn't until you whip a fastball twenty five yards
in the air or you throw one just haul off
and throw it deep. You get all that anxiety out.
(14:35):
So that's me. That's my philosophy. And it's interesting because
I didn't really think about that when I was coaching.
It was like a year or two after I was
done coaching where I realized, Man, I should have done
out my quarterbacks a little bit more. We didn't throw
it a lot, so it went a big deal, and
especially in high school, but in college and pros, first,
first three throws, I'm throwing that sucker deep. I'm just
launching it because I get anxiety with the short passing game.
(14:57):
Sometimes you feel like you're playing in a box. Right,
don't get more anxiety.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Don't get a tipball? Right last night? Right, don't get
a tipball. Happened to both teams. You gotta be really
careful with that. So all right, maybe I've changed my mind.
Instead of early easy completion, how about both one early
easy competition and one go deep d just to get
the kinks out and make the defense think a little bit.
But I think we're both in agreement that you got
(15:23):
to run the football. You have to find a way
to get yards on the ground. I know he's got
to be good on third down and all that extent
drives to get those opportunities.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
But you have to eat on the ground somehow.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
You got to get to third and this defense, you
got to get to third and four, third and six.
We were not in Jacksonville that one for seven. We
were not in third and six. We were third and twelve,
we were third eighteen, all those kind of things. So
the guy that will be in charge of all of this,
if Mark and I are anxious, this guy is not
Tamika Ryans.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Mark caught up with him right here.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Coach, last time you played them, your backs had a
good yard per carry average, just didn't get all the
touch that you probably wanted. What's it gonna take to
run the ball well this time?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Yeah, we're gonna try a little different skin.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
We're gonna try a little more outside zone with would
he try to get him run and try to really
push these guys to the sideline, allowing Woody to play
with great vision, press the edge and possibly cut back.
And I think we can, you know, really hit some
bigger plays in the run game this week.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
How about Davis Mills With a full week of practice,
house preping before.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
And prep has been really good with Davis.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
It's really loved his command in the huddle, nice communication,
like how he controls the offense. He's done a really
nice job working with the cadence this week. You just
tell like he's been there before, like he's not. It's
not his first time doing it, not his first rodeo.
He stepped in. He's done a great job of leading
all week and I'm excited to see him play on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
The Jacks are still way up there and turnover March
and what makes them so good taking the ball away and.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
What makes them good is they get after the football
like they're flying around and they are punching at the
football every chance that they get right. If the ball
is high, their DB's do a great job but batting
the ball up and they've come down with a lot
of interceptions. So for us, we got to have great
ball placement from the quarterback. Receivers got to play with
aggressive hands attacking the ball, and our backs are tight
(17:09):
end whoever whoever is running with the ball, we gotta
do a great job making sure we're securing the ball
off hand on and secure the ball to the ground.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
You did a pretty good job against the ground game
last time. What does that take coach.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
Yeah, it's going to take our d line building that
wall up front. We had to play strong, especially inside
with our d tackles. Our ends have to do a
great job of setting edges, and everybody has to tackle
really well, starting with our corners, our safeties, our linebackers.
We gotta fit, we gotta feel aggressive, and we got
to knock them back.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
How important is this home crowd. This is the third
game of your home stand. You need them today to
make noise.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
Definitely need them, Definitely need them, and more important this
week because this offense a right. Their offense only operates
by doing alerts and checks at the line of scrimmage.
So how can we make it difficult for them. We
can make it difficult by our fans being loud, being
rowdy the entire time that the Jacksonville offense is out
out there. We need to make communication a headache for them,
(18:03):
and our fans will be the impact. They would be
that twelfth man to change the game for us.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Their kicker made an NFL record field goal last week,
So when they get to the fifty, I guess they're
in range. I mean field position is a premium in
this one.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Field position is a huge is huge this week. They
have a great kicker. We also got the Nico Autry
out there. We got him taking a little bit worried
about Ausrey. But no, we have to do a great
job defensively, like once that ball, if it gets around
me at field, we got to do a great job
of really holding them, not giving up any leaky yardage.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Never mind the field goals for that. But matthew Wright,
what about the kickoff game, because that's really important.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
Yeah, the kickoff game, it will be important. We're going
to put the ball in play, allow our guys to
go go hunt, go cover. We got to do a
better job of getting off of blocks and finishing a
kickoff game. And for us kick return, like, let's create
an explosive run and I want to see us.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
Go score on kick return. Coach, thanks a lot, good luck,
Thanks Mark, tremendous nuggets that one with Demiko Mark, very
very good stuff. All right, Greg Bailey ABC thirteen cut
up with a key guy as well. I think Dalt
Schultz he's got to play well. He's got to have
at these five receptions. They talked about that right here.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Take me back inside your preparations. You and Davis to
get on the same page, all of your teammates to
get on the same page, so he can go out
there and cut it loose and play really well for
you guys.
Speaker 7 (19:22):
Yeah, dude, honestly, the prep kind of doesn't change week
to week. What's nice is Davis and I have actually
been watching film together for since the beginning of the year.
We always try to go get a headstart on third
downs and red zone, so we've been kind of seeing
things and talking about things for a while. So just
having another guy that you know hopefully sees it the
(19:44):
same way as is good, especially the process. Like I
know our processes are very similar, so I'm hoping that
that leads to some good things.
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Your teammates have told us how much they always appreciate
his professionalism. What does that mean in regards to his approach,
because he makes it very clear I prepare to play
every week he does.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
I mean, you see that with the way that he
goes out, Like your backup quarterback is usually getting scout
team reps during the week, and so like his plays
are really against our defense, and like, dude, there's some
weeks where Dude, he's dicing people up. So you can
see it in the way that he prepares. I see
it in his process firsthand, and then you see it
when you go out in the practice field, like there's
no slouch dude. Like he's out there competing just like
(20:22):
everybody else in the opportunities that he gets.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
So seventeen catches for you.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
The last three weeks, what's started to click for you,
and that role kind of continued even when Davis came
into the game after CJ got hurt.
Speaker 7 (20:32):
Yeah, dude, nothing special. I'm literally just doing my job,
like be where I need to be, execute the way
that I need execute, and just be available.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Your faith in your teammates. You really stood out on
Sunday after disappointing lost at Denver. You told us so
much you believe in this group, You believe in the process.
Pull back the curtain a little bit. Why do you
believe in this group so much to get this thing
on track? And your words, find that extra player too
that you guys.
Speaker 8 (20:56):
Need, Dude, I believe in the work.
Speaker 7 (20:59):
Like to me, confidence and leadership is based on the
work that you're able to put into the process, and
I've seen it.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
I've seen that.
Speaker 7 (21:08):
I've seen guys like Davis who are backups that are
committed to that process, committed to the work, and dude,
something's got to give. Man, Like you keep working the
right way, you keep doing the right things, you keep
preparing the right way, like at some point you're going
to break through. You never know when that moment is,
you never know when your numbers is gonna get called,
But approaching it professionally and through that process, eventually good
(21:30):
things are gonna happen.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Jacksonville has done such a great job forcing turnovers. What
stands out from their defense as you study their tail
do they fly?
Speaker 1 (21:37):
They fly around.
Speaker 7 (21:38):
They got two real cerebral linebackers, and they got good
dvs on the back end and their front. Dude, their
front's really good too. So it's like their defenses is
a problem. And again yeah, they're they're capitalizing on those
mistakes that offenses have made. So we're going to do
our best to stay up tight, handle what we need
to handle, and keep moving the ball forward.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
We look forward to it. Well, thank you very much.
All Right, we've already into the preview a little bit.
Let's get in full with this game preview.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Mark and I on the Jaguars. Let's go, Johnny This
is a rematch. Week three Texans lost to the Jaguars.
It was turnover city in the fourth quarter and the
Jags end of the field, plus the Texans got a
touchdown in that quarter, somehow lost the game because of
the turnovers. Really defense played well enough to win. This
is a little bit of a different situation. Now you
(22:26):
have Davis Mills going for the Houston Texans.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
You have the.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Jags at five and three, feeling pretty good about themselves
after their overtime win against the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
Absolutely, both teams dealing with a lot of injuries.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
That's one thing that we know in the NFL, once
you get to Week ten, in particular, you could be
as healthy as you want. Up into Week ten, I mean,
the Texans were as healthy as they could possibly be.
Now you're going into this game potentially without the right
side of your line. You started quarterback, you're starting kicker,
and maybe others that you're gonna be without in this game. Jaguars,
same thing. Their receiver corps has decimated. This why they
(22:59):
went out and traded for Jacobe Myers. They're missing Travis Hunter. Defensively,
they're banged up. Eric Murray, former Texan who had kind
of solidified that secondary. He's going to be out, So
you've got opportunities on both sides to kind of take
advantage of all Right, the Texans right side of the
offensive line, Oh, the Jaguars secondary. Which team can take
(23:19):
advantage of the issue, so to speak, the injury issue?
The best will walk out of there with a win.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
All Right, Three things to look out for Josh heinz Allen,
three names, three things. He's the first thing really got
to keep him off. Davis Mills and Arianta Ersari had
him last time. Heinz Allen got some things done, knocked
the ball on that final pick and CJ threw and
tended for Kirk Well, you have to have the clean pocket.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Long enough for Davis Mills.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
The Jags are very good at sacking the quarterback last
in the league, so very bad as a matter of
fact collectively.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
But heinz Allen is a thorn or a dagger in the.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Side, and he has been ever since he got the
Jacksonville I mean, he just even if Vlaramy Tunssel was
a left tackle, or he's going on the other side
against Titus, or he's going against other tackles, He's just
always been a thorn in the side. He's so I
stood next to him on the field one time when
he when he came up there's a play ended up
on our sideline.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
I just remember kind of gawking at him, like, dang.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
He's long, but he's strong and he's explosive off the ball.
He doesn't just roll off and let his power do
it for him. He's powerful and fast, and that is
really what created problems, especially on that last play, because
it looked like Ariantae had him. It looked like he
was away from CJ, that CJ could step up and
(24:38):
hit Christian in the end zone and Josh heinz Allen
just reached out with his long left arm was able
to get the ball and that was the you know,
the ultimate play in that game.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
And so keeping him.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Even just away from the pocket is going to take
a couple of people. Now, who all do you devote
to it? Ariante has improved since that Jacksonville game. Let's
be on. He has improved, but you still need the
insurance of, hey.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
We're gonna let Woody go over here.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Now here's the issue. Because of that, and because of
the injuries, you may not have Titus that right tackle,
so you have to go over and help Blake. If
Blake is going up against Treyvon Walker right and does
Josh heines Allen then move over there to go against Blake,
then you help on outside. So there's a lot of
decisions that Texans have to make, but the biggest one
(25:25):
they have to make sure is that forty one Josh
heines Allen doesn't wreck the game.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Okay, another thing to watch out for Travis Etn. This
is a top ten runner in this league, very physical,
having a good season. I think he's much more of
a concern for this defense than Trevor Lawrence himself.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Am I right, yes?
Speaker 1 (25:44):
And I remember about this and know your foe this
week that when Travis Etn has a great ballgame, define
great however you want, but when he's getting twenty to
twenty five touches combine receptions and Carrie Jacksonville's offense is
tough to stop.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Last week against the Raiders, he got a ton of carriers.
Now he didn't get a ton of yards.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
He ran I think twenty two times for like eighty
five this yards.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
But that was enough.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
That was enough to keep the Raiders off balance. And
then Trevor threw it pretty well throughout the second half.
Etn is the driver, he's the engine. You must tackle him,
and there have been. He's been there since we faced
him since twenty two. He was in You're in twenty one,
but we faced him since twenty two, and he has
been difficult to tackle every time we have played him.
(26:32):
The tackling has got to be at a premium. And
when you get banged up and guys aren't as fast
as the ball as maybe they were in one or
week two, now you need more guys there because he's
gonna pinball maybe off the first two, three, four, five,
sixth guy in. They've got to finish the tackles and
make sure that a three yard run doesn't turn into
a nine yard run, that an eight yard run doesn't
turn into a twenty eight yard run, because that's what
(26:53):
he can do to you.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Trevor Lawrence unimpressive numbers, quarterback rating below eighties, six picks,
nine touchdowns, completion percentage below sixty and this is not
what they envisioned in year five, yet here they are
at five and three.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
I'll give you another thing to watch out.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
For, Cam Little because he kicked us sixty eight yarder
last week, and it's bombs away with the Jags. In
the field goal department, he kicked a seventy yarder in
the preseason. Now, he hasn't always been the most consistent
and the opposing field goal kickers tend to miss against
the Texans, But when they get to the fifty, they're
(27:28):
gonna go forward. If they have that opportunity late in
the game, they're down three or they're within that, they
can do it with Cam Little from the fifty because.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
That's a sixty eight yarder right there.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
We play on turf and we play inside. Yeah, he
doesn't have to deal with the weather, the elements. But
one thing he has to deal with, and this fascinates me, Deniko.
He has to deal with Deniko Autry. Why the Raiders
did not have Max Crosby on the field as a
field goal blocker on the sixty eight yard field goal
is beyond me.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
He was over on the sideline. They have it on
NFL films.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
He's remarked, He's like, oh man, he said some words
that I can't stay.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
On the radio.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
He should have been on the field. Dadiko Austry will
be on the field the Texans do a great job
of scheming. Did he go up to potentially block field goals?
So that's one thing he does have to worry about.
And against us in Jacksonville, he missed a big one
in the second half, So that's when you know, though, Okay,
all I gotta do is get to the fifty.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
Yeah, I mean, think about a.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Late game situation and maybe we're up to and Trevor
sitting there going with sixteen.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Seconds left, they get a touch.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Back, they take the ball to thirty five, they throw
a dig route to midfield, spike it. Hey, we'll try
sixty seven yarder off turf indoors.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
They'll absolutely do it.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
So you got to make sure that you can little
proof this game that he doesn't have a shot to
do something like that at.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
The end of it.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
All right, Sleepers of the Game presented by Mattress from
the official sleep Parker of the Houston Texans.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Who do you have this week? I'm going Jake Andrews
at center.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Now, it's a little different for Jake this week because
the Jaguars are a little bit more They kind of
more for a little bit, but they play a little
bit more even front stuff. So they'll kind of move
around a little bit, but it's a little different from
what Denver does. That's really not even the biggest point.
The biggest point is he may have two different guards
next to him.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
He may have Lacn and Juice.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
He might have, you know, other guys. But he's got
to get used to having if Laken and Juice are
in the game. He's not had a game this year
where both of them have been next to him, so
he's gonna have to.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
Work through some of that stuff.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
And when Jake plays well and they can get a
body to a linebacker, they run the ball well, and
the Texans must absolutely right in stone one thousand percent.
The Texans must get a body on Ventro Miller, Devin
Lloyd or Foyer Lukun. They have to get a hat
on a linebacker. The Jaguars are third in a league
(30:00):
in rush defense because those guys running the ball a
lot of times on Debated, you got to get a
guy there.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Jake Andrews is the guy.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Who controls him out in the middle.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Better figured out. We haven't talked about Davis Mills much.
He's not my sleeper, but Davis needs a big game.
He's four or five and one in his career against
the AFC South. He's done it before he could do it.
But here's my real sleeper. Matthew Wright plays a cool
because with fair baron hurt right presst into duty.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
This team tends to kick some field goals.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Johnny, I don't know if they've been aware of this,
So you have been around, so you're gonna have to
convert those. This is an important job. This is sometimes
taken for granted with the really good kickers in this league.
You're importing a kicker to replace your injured kicker. He's
got to do the job and if he does.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
He might walk out of there with a win on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Absolutely, he's former Jaguar. The year that he kicked for
the Jaguars, I think it's twenty twenty one. He's twenty
one to twenty four, right, I mean that's all standing
for his career.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
I think he's eighty six eighty seven percent. It's a
revenge game for Matt, Yes, revenge game for well.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
We have a lot of those because he played for
a lot of teams. Look, he's got to just come
in make the field goals you should make, and and
the kickoffs oh yeah, can't make a mistake any kickoffs,
giving them a touchback at the thirty five or kicking
one out of bound, trying to be too cute and
give it to him at the forty. Yep, you've gotta
be just be solid.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Just let him return the ball, kick it inside the
ten and take them shot with the cut you guys.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Guys.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Yep, let them do their job and that's it.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Texans JAG Sunday at noon, Go Texans.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
All right, great stuff from Mark and I, if I
should say so myself. Coming up next Steven at a
goke safety's coach and also tackling dummy. We'll explain next
right here in Texans All Access. Welcome back to this
Friday Nation of Texans All Access from the hun Day
Texans Radio Studio. I am your host, John Harrison, football analyst,
sideline reporter for your Houston Texans. It's time to speak
(31:50):
to safety's coach, Steve Hada. Go Okay. We had a
great time talking to Steven and it brought up in
my memory bank times I did something that he's done
at actice just recently. Take a list. We had a
fun time talking to coach a.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Coach Steven had to go gay with us here and
studio coach, how's it going good? Have are you so great?
Fresh off the practice field? So how's it going this week?
Getting ready for the Jags? Take us through that.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
First of all, it's been good.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
The guys are locked in focused.
Speaker 9 (32:16):
Obviously division opponents, so someone we're familiar with, so I
get they're excited, obviously ready to get back in the game.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Tell me this, coach, because it's noticeable how you've occasionally
put on a uniform let your guys hit you. You
let them hit you a lot when you're going through
tackling drills. You take us through that. You try to
make it interesting for them at the same time as
teaching them fundamentals and whatever whatever else you tell us.
Speaker 9 (32:41):
I think just you know, obviously, no doubt you want
to find different ways to keep the guys energized and
ready to go. But I think just giving them a target,
like letting them, you know, putting on a crash pad
and you know take me to the ground. You know,
obviously trying to protect them first and foremost, But you know,
I just want them to get better, that's all it is. Like,
(33:04):
you know, I don't want them to feel like, man,
I want to hurt my teammate. You're about to go
out to prectic.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Man, you can hit me. It's perfectly fine.
Speaker 9 (33:09):
So man, it's just whatever it takes to help those
guys get better, you know, And I'll be all right.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
You got a cold tub here. It's really nice.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
As a former coach who once did that often, when
I saw you, I was like, salude, you just went
up my coach rankings because of that. So I'll ask you,
and I know I did for high school kids, and
I know they were chomping at the bit because they're like,
every time that coach gave me a donkey barbecue, I'm
gonna take it out on him. Where there were a
couple of them that were like, you know what, coach,
(33:36):
you chewed me in that film session.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
You're about to feel my wrath. Did you have any
of that happening when you had the pads on?
Speaker 9 (33:41):
No, man, those those guys always put forth their best effort.
I just wanted to have a good, clean, safe, tackling rep.
So whatever that looks like.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Each and every week, coach take us through the progress
of killing Bullock year two. Hard not to notice. I
mean he's all over the field making plays. How's he doing,
How's he's progressing overall.
Speaker 9 (33:59):
Kaitlyn, I mean, obviously we see his athleticism and his
speed on display. A guy who studies, guy who puts
in the work, I mean, I think he's really elevated
his game, not just in terms of taking the ball,
but just growing as a player, just the way he studies.
And obviously with experience, you know, you recognize things a
(34:20):
lot faster. So a lot of times last year he's
probably seeing things for the first time firsthand. He might
hear things from vets in the room, but experiencing them
and seeing them for the first time, and now it's
second time around, It's okay, it's muscle memory now and
he knows how to react even maybe a step faster
than before.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
So it's been good.
Speaker 9 (34:36):
And I think the vets and the guys with experience
in the room tremendously help m J. Stewart, Miles Bryant,
Jimmy Ward as always, and Jalen Mills as well, So
they've all helped, and it's helped you Jalen Reid as well.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Coaching his role in Kaylen's role. When you talk about experience.
It feels like there's so many items that you could
talk about just experiencing the defense, understanding the defense, but
then and also understanding receivers, what receivers, what particular receivers do,
what particular quarterbacks like to do.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
How much is that a part of his growth as well?
Speaker 1 (35:10):
Understanding that, hey, quarterback X likes to do this, he
always looks to his left before he goes right, or
he looks underneath before he goes deep, all those kind
of things. How much is that playing a role for
Kaylin as well? Learning those kind of things.
Speaker 9 (35:22):
I think that plays a big part of it, because again,
at the end of the day, there's a lot of
quarterbacks who get paid a lot of money to make
big tome throws to big time receivers. So you try
not to let something override what you would refer to
the almost common sense, like, man, the game's on the line,
I know they're going to throw this guy to the
ball right, but you still need to see it happen,
(35:43):
like you still got to confirm it with your eyes.
But also to the situations of the game, Like every
snap there's a situation. So let's say it's first and ten,
where they want to do. Where are they on the field.
If it's first and ten on the minus five, they
might just hand the ball off to try to create
the space it was first ten, first and ten, maybe
in the logo area theyve okay, we got a chance
to just take a free shot and run some type
(36:03):
of gadget. So just understanding the situation of the game
as well as what you know to be true based
on your film study.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
Coach MJ.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
Stewart last offseason, here we are and he was acquired
or reacquired kind of late in the game or late
ish after the first waiver or to a free agency
and we thought this is one to watch, and certainly
is because starts a bunch of games really important to you.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
What do you see from him?
Speaker 2 (36:25):
What can you tell the listeners about what he brings
to the table that's so good for the Texans?
Speaker 9 (36:29):
Just consistency, very very very very intelligent. Guy asks a
lot of questions, good questions, questions that can be challenging,
make you think and okay, what would happen in this situation?
Things that may have never put on tape, but it
makes you think. And even as a coach, okay, I
may make sure, I cover all those situations.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
In the meeting room.
Speaker 9 (36:48):
So I mean his mind is, like you know, it's
trying to solve problems, and he wants to be that
for the room. So things that happened happen. He wants
to be able to go out there and problem solve fast.
So I mean it makes me better as a coach too,
And I think obviously he helps the younger guys too
because he hadn't always been a starter. He's obviously had
a big role on special teams, but just the way
(37:08):
he works, the way he shows up in the office
day in and day out, whether he's a starter on
defense or not, has always been consistent.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
I think the guys can admire that.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Coach, What can you tell us you mentioned Jalen Reid earlier?
Speaker 1 (37:19):
We saw Jalen in preseason, I mean a training camp
for a little bit, got hurt, then we didn't see
him and we haven't. You seen him on special teams
a little bit. What do you tell us about Jalen
reading his progress?
Speaker 4 (37:27):
I mean he's developing.
Speaker 9 (37:29):
You know, obviously he missed some training camp, so those
are obviously valuable reps. But again, when you have guys
in the room like a M. J. Stewart and Jayalen
Mills who've played a lot of football, a lot of
football in different positions, whether it's time safety. Both of
them played corner and nickel before in the National in
(37:49):
the National Football League.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
So like just pouring into Jalen.
Speaker 9 (37:52):
And you know, obviously it's kind of an accelerated process
when you get activated during the season without those training
camp reps. But I mean he's coming on and again,
like he's going to have you know, learning curves and
things like that. But he's picking up, you know, right
really left off in training camp, and I'm excited for
his future.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Coach, we have a lot of season left, But let
me just take you into the off season for a moment,
just on a typical basis, how involved you get in
scouting out other safeties in college or maybe potential free
agents that might become available that kind of thing. And
these discussions have to be really collective with the organization.
But how do you see it because you have an
opinion on these things.
Speaker 9 (38:28):
I'm sure it's just one of those things. It's obviously
a collective effort, and you know, when it comes down
to it, I just do it, do what's asked to me. Yeah,
So that's just you know, that's kind of the process
like when we go through the evaluation. Obviously, you know
there's different names that come up in the draft process
or free agency, but you know it's all relative. You know,
it's I just focus on coaching my position and do
(38:51):
what's asked to me.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
When it comes to that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Yeah, you never know who you're gonna get at because
you might think about three four guys and all of
a sudden, he jail and reed.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
I like him, but I never expected this happen. That
kind of thing.
Speaker 9 (39:01):
And I mean, I would say during one thing during
the evaluation process is as you're evaluating college guys, you
know you try to turn over every stone. You never
know what's gonna happen. Where the guy might be online
projected as a first round pick or undrafted, doesn't matter.
Just evaluate them, and you know, you never know where
things go. So when somebody presents something to you, you
(39:23):
do your best with your evaluation and giving you honest feedback.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
This week it's Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
It's the first time this year that will play a
team a second time what's happened when we've had the playoffs.
We played the Ravens the second time. There's so much
difference between those weeks. But it happens with the Vision
opponents every year. You play them twice a year. As
you get ready for the Jaguars, you know, really having
scouted them the first time in week three, how much
(39:51):
and what does anything change in how you prepare for
them this time? Do you want to look for things
that are different, look for things that are the same.
How do you go by scouting a team a second
time when it's been just seven weeks since we played
them last.
Speaker 9 (40:05):
I would say obviously any times familiarity, it's obviously identifying
the personnel and things like that, but everybody sell scouts.
So something they did in the first two weeks before
they played us, right, we put this on tape, and
then when they played us, they might have done one
thing right. And obviously they still have their call sheet
and things they liked against us, they may not have
actually called, so they might still keep that. So it's
(40:27):
just you know, it's week to week and also too,
like in terms of health on both sides, like they
might have a bunch of things schemed up for X,
Y and Z, But if those guys aren't playing, it
really is irrelevant to playing the Texans. So each week
is his own beast. You kind of, you know, you
kind of go with the flow the game. You go
in with an idea, but after you know, you know,
(40:47):
after a couple of series, it's like, okay, this is
the flow.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
Right.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
When people watch football, the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinators
get a lot of airtime. They'll play caller and that
kind of thing. You see a shot of them. But
tell the listeners what you do as a position coach
or coaching safeties. Tell them about what you do on
game day during the course of those three hours.
Speaker 9 (41:09):
Coach, I would say, just first, you know, obviously being
engaged with your guys after each series, like what's going
on in the game, what are they seeing? And so
when you have you know, the tablets on the game
on the sideline during the game, obviously after the series
you review the plays that you sit down with the guys,
you know, you go through the tablets, see what they
saw and things like you know, what you just did
(41:31):
on tape, So like maybe a guy slipped in coverage
and they might think that guy might be open. They're
going to come back to that play, you know, so
just understanding what do we do the last series, what
are they seeing, what are we presenting, and you know,
just making adjustments there throughout the game. And obviously it's collective.
So after you know, first two, three, four series, they
(41:52):
might not have done something that they've consistently done on tape,
and it's like, man, you got to stay alert so
we don't get caught napping on a certain series. So
it's really just you know, almost like a game of
chess throughout the throughout the game is just you know,
being alert, being ready for whatever happens, but also relying
on your training and don't need the chase ghosts.
Speaker 1 (42:10):
So just just to confirm, you guys only get still
shots still pictures.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
Correct, That's correct?
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Okay, College Dave now throwing the fact that you can
watch some video, It's crazy. How would you feel if
you had video to actually watch during a game.
Speaker 3 (42:27):
As opposed to just the still shots?
Speaker 1 (42:29):
How would it change the coaching realm in the NFL
if they allowed that?
Speaker 4 (42:34):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (42:36):
Would you rather have that than the still shots?
Speaker 4 (42:39):
I would just roll what we have? Right?
Speaker 1 (42:40):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (42:42):
Something nowhere You're not gonna go viral here, coach.
Speaker 9 (42:44):
Okay, stick to what we have and they want to
change it one day, we'll.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Just good answer, good answer, good answer. All right. It
Salute the Service Day on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
And we've been asking people if you had to join
a branch of the Armed Services, you got to go
away a couple of years and be a part of
this army, Navy, air Force, Marines, coast Guard, what would
you pick, coach, which branch would you be in?
Speaker 3 (43:10):
Knowing that you have to go, you have to do it,
So what would it be?
Speaker 4 (43:13):
Air Force?
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Air Force? Okay, you want to fly or like work
on the planes or what?
Speaker 9 (43:19):
I think it's all. I think that's all like a
privilege obviously to be in that role. But they're just
the things you see from the outside, and the type
of skills that are acquired, particularly with the Air Force
and the different aircrafts they get to work on. I
think that's really really exciting. And you know, it's an
important job. You got to take pride in any branch, right,
you know, those guys and ladies go out there and
(43:41):
risk their lives day in and day out, and you
know you never take that for granted.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
If you happen to be in top Gun. All the
pilots have call names. I think I have one for you.
But if you had a call name like Maverick or Hangman.
Jake Hansen said his was Jokes because that's Twitter handle.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
Mario Edwards Junior said his was Juggernaut. Juggernaut, what would
your call sign be?
Speaker 9 (44:08):
It's a great question, and I feel like those are
better acquired when people come up with them.
Speaker 3 (44:12):
I got before you. Last name starts to a call
you Aces.
Speaker 4 (44:17):
It's creative.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
It's not like it.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
I mean I like it. Okay, Aces flies with Hanson
with jugs, Aces and jugs. I mean, that'll be good.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
We asked Dino, by the way, if he'd ever put
on the pads and allow his guys to hit him.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
He said, no way, He's not gonna do it.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
Doing it so you are definitely alone, very difficult to
tackle as well.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
We've noticed this, like you fight for extra yards.
Speaker 9 (44:38):
You know, if I was, if I feel like I
was a little bit more petite, you know, I probably
have to step away.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
That's kind of in studio again.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
But yeah, you gotta protect yourself too.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Truly, to protect yourself coach nice so much for joining us.
Good luck this weekend time.
Speaker 4 (44:58):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (44:59):
That's subtle. The shot is just beautiful right there from
coach ay Man. That was awesome. All right? Coming up
the injury report and on a Friday, it's the status report.
Who is out? Oh boy, we know a couple of guys,
but there are a few more to add to it.
But the Jaguars have a few out as well. We'll
discuss all at XT on Texans All Access. Yes, sir,
(45:22):
welcome back to this Friday ed issue of Texans All
Access from Monday Texans Radio Studio. I am your host,
Jean Harris Football and a Southern reporter for your Houston Texans,
and each and every Friday for a Sunday game, basically,
it's two days before the injury report turns into a
status report, tells you who's in who's out. This thing
(45:44):
is rock solid. It's always, especially from weeks ten through eighteen.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
And then it's the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Most important thing you can get because you figure out
who's out, who's in, and how you go about playing
this game. So we got a lot to discuss. Let's
look at the Texans. We already know that CJ Strod
is out, Davis Mills will start. I think mentally we've
come to grips with that. I think as soon as
(46:14):
CJ went down last week, as soon as he was
there and got hit and was lying on a turf
for the medics ran out to get him, I realized, Okay,
this is probably gonna be Davis Mills for this game
and the next game at a minimum. So I already
knew that looking forward to Davis. We talked about this
in the game preview. Knee Davis to step up in
a big, big way. At the end of the game,
(46:36):
there was a play and I can't remember which one
it was. I can't remember. I think it might have
been the bow knicks, not scramble, but designed run around
the left side. I think Jalen on that play got hit.
Jalen Petrie got hit on that play. He was a
little slow getting up. He is in a concussion protocol.
He is out. Once we knew he had a concussion.
(46:57):
We knew he was gonna be out. Titus Hour had
a concussion. He went into locker room about three or
four minutes left in the first half. He is also
out ed Ingram, who's the right guard next to the
right tackle tight is Howard ed Ingram's been dealing with knee. Now,
with that knee, he ended up going back into the
(47:18):
game and playing the second half of that game. Don't
know how but he went back in. He is out.
So if you're keeping track thus far, you have your
starting quarterback out. You're starting nickel most probably most versatile
chess piece you have on defense out the right side
of your offensive line out thus far. Kymie fairban we
(47:44):
knew was gonna be out coaching discuss that during the week.
Matthew Wright will be a practice squad elevation when that
transaction comes out. I think it'll come out tomorrow at
some point in the afternoon. Oh, we're all watching college football.
Kymie fairbarn is out dealing with quiet issue. Matthew Wright
will kick. He of the eighty six percent career field
goal make percentage not bad. Christian Harris linebacker also out.
(48:10):
Jakob Johnson is out. I don't know that they have
officially reinstated him, but he is out with the hamstring
game though he practiced all week. That's good news now,
if there's good news. Will Anderson junior, Denico Autrey, Braxton, Barrios,
Harrison Bryant, Nick Chubb, Dylan Horton, Damian Piersteld Schultz all
(48:31):
practiced in full of those. Harrison Bryant is questionable. So
what we need to figure out is who's playing right guard,
who's playing right tackle. Is it as simple as Blake
Fisher goes to right tackle, just Scruggs steps in at
right guard, Lake and stays at left The two guards
play the whole game and we rock on. Don't know.
(48:53):
We've seen this before in the past number a couple
of years ago when CJ went down, everybody would go
talk to Davis at his locker and I'll tell you
a little secret, Mark, and I actually knew that Case
was going to be starting. We'd actually gone out to
practice five minutes earlier that week than we were supposed to,
and we looked out and the offensive practicing with Case.
(49:14):
We watched it all week. Everybody go talk to Davis
and the Case ends up starting against the Toilers the
Titans Texas and winning that game. So it might be
an opportunity for others. They are the tackles you have
Jerk Kingston, you also have Trent Brown. Those guys weren't
likely are gonna have to be active, and they weren't
active last week. But to have eight offensive linemen active,
they're gonna be active. Then will they start, will they play?
(49:36):
Don't know? Will you play sixth offensive lineman the entire game?
You might do that, especially with Harrison Bryant being banged
up in Dalt Schultz being your only tight end. There
are a lot of things at play this week against
the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now the Jaguars, they will be without
starting offensive guard Ezra Cleveland. They will be without corner
(49:58):
Jordan Lewis, who gave us all kinds of issues last time.
Hunter long the tight end. I actually was watching the
game back against the Raiders. He had a nasty fall.
Once I saw that fall, I was like, he's gonna
be out of this game, and he is. And number
one wide receiver Brian Thomas Junior is out. So you're
talking about the Jaguars without Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas
(50:19):
Junior at wide receiver, Jordan Lewis in the secondary, and
Eric Murray went on IR this week their other starting safety,
so they're dealing with issues as well. They just had
Trevor Lawrence. They're starting quarterback, which in some cases against
the Texans has been a good thing. Some cases it's
been a not so good thing. So to reiterate out
(50:40):
for your Texans Kymie Fair, Baron, Christian Harris, Titus, Howard,
ed Ingram, Jalen Petrie, c J. Stroud, and Jakub Johnson,
questionable Harris, By, Harris and Bryant For the Jaguars, Ezra
Cleveland offensive lineman, cornerback Jordan Lewis, Titian Hunter, long and
wide receiver Brian Thomas Junior. All right, there are other
games going on this week other than Jags Texans. I
(51:02):
will pick them for fun, straight up and against the spread.
Next right here on Texans All Access.
Speaker 3 (51:07):
What's happened everybody?
Speaker 1 (51:08):
We go one half of the show in the books,
another half left to go. We get to talk to
Dimico Ryans in the next segment. Then we get to
hear from Jake Hansen to finish up our two hours,
and then of course Mark will take you from eight
to nine on a special Friday edition of Texans All
Access as well. But I appreciate you being with me.
John Harris, foot Painals sideline reporter for your Houston Texans
(51:32):
and my favorite segment. And I don't always get a
chance to do it because we might have extra radio
and you have extra interviews, and we got to make
sure we get them in. I don't always get to
make my predictions, but this week I do straight up
and against the spread for fun. For fun, it's just
a great way to talk about the NFL and the
(51:53):
things that are going on and all the teams and
everything that's happened. Man, it was a wild trade deadline.
So let's talk about these games, hit some of the
key points and then make our predictions again. Say it
with me, everybody, for fun, but straight up and against
the spread. So let's start in bird Land. We're going
to Germany. In fact, the Falcons and Colts are already there.
(52:14):
The Colts are a six and a half point favorite,
I would say on the road, which is actually the
Colts home game, and a mod Sauce Gardner will play
for the Colts for the first time. As much as
I would love the Falcons to knock off the Colts,
I would love it, and I think the Falcons will
(52:34):
push the Colts. I think Bejean Robinson finally has one
of those games but it's gonna fall short. However, the
Falcons will get inside the six and a half, but
the Colts will come out of there thirty one twenty eight.
They'll win it by three. Falcons cover, Colts win in Germany.
All Right, it's get to the noon games and the
(52:55):
Browns are taking on the Jets. Now, the Browns two
and six, Jets are won it. But these two teams
are intriguing as hell to me, just because of what
the Jets did with their trades this week and the
Browns with Dylan Gabriel at quarterback in New York. The
Browns are a two and a half point favorite, but
(53:15):
I think that win last week for the Jets is
gonna give them a little bit of a kickstart. They're
playing at home. Yeah, there's no Sauce Gardner and Quinn
Williams is gone, so maybe take the over here. But
it's not if the Browns are gonna score a ton.
I think this game is gonna be pretty low scoring,
but I'm going with the Jets to upset the Browns
(53:36):
in New Jersey. Win two in a row for the
first time in a couple of years. Let's go j Ets, Jets, Jets,
win and get to cover obviously, Okay Bill's Dolphins, Oh
boy game down in Miami, where Buffalo is an eight
and a half point favorite. Dolphins traded Jalen Phillips, They
(53:58):
did not trade Devon a Chan, They did not trade
Jalen Waddle. They kept their offensive firepower that will keep
the Dolphins in the game. However, the Bills are coming
off that big win against the Chiefs. I think that's
the kind of win that gives the Dolphins a be
twelve shot, kind of boosts them going forward. I think
the Bills win this, and they win it big. I'm
(54:19):
saying thirty four to seventeen that covers the eight and
a half. Bills go and dominate in Miami. One of
the games of the day. This is awesome. The Tom
Brady Bowl. The Patriots are taking on the Bucks down
in Tampa. Bucks coming off bye week. Patriots gotta win.
Eat one out against Antlanta. Patriots got that win, but
(54:41):
now they're going to Tampa Bay. I think the Bucks
favored by two and a half. Vegas is telling you
the Patriots are a half point better on it. I
don't believe it. I think the Bucks are gonna win
this by a touchdown. Lets go thirty five twenty eight
Bucks get the win in the cover or the Patriots
in Tampa, Giants take on the Bears. Bears are five
(55:02):
and three, playing much better. Big win last week for Chicago.
Now they take on the Giants. Giants lost Camp Scattaboo
kind of lost a little bit of a momentum. Now
two and seven. She was favored by four and a half.
That was told many engs ago four or five. Still
(55:22):
four and a half, five point spread. A lot of
times Vegas doesn't know what to do. I know what
to do. I'm picking the Bears. They're hot, they're playing
at home. Caleb's doing some tremendous things. I'm going Bears
to beat the Giants at home and do it by seven.
We'll go twenty eight to twenty one. Jackson Dart will
do enough to keep it close. The Bear's gonna win
(55:43):
this thing. Caleb Williams started to turn to corner a
little bit. Bears go to six and three with the
win and the cover. The Battle of the Purple the
Barney Bowl. The Ravens three and five travel to Minnesota
take on Jay J. McCarthy and the Vikings Baltimore's favored
by four and a half on the road. I think
(56:04):
the Ravens will win this game, but I do think
the Vikings will keep it close. I think the Ravens
defense healthier now than they were when the Texas played him.
I think they we have JJ McCarthy some issue, but
McCarthy can move, he can run, and that'll keep it
close enough. But the Ravens will walk out of there
with a win. Go Vikings, p'll cover, but the Ravens
are gonna end up winning that ballgame. All right, It's
(56:25):
go to the Panthers and the Saints. Panthers playing some
really good football. They upset Green Bay in Green Bay
last week. Panthers are five and four, the Saints one
to eight. Tyler Shuck gets a second start. Carolina favored
by five and a half. I think the Saints are
that I'm sorry, I think the Panthers are that much
better than the Saints. So I'm going Panthers. Bryce Young
leading the way, rico'ddell doing some great things. The offense
(56:49):
puts up enough points, the defense is playing better. As
I pointed out this week, We're going Panthers to win
this thing by ten. Let's go twenty eight oh by
up twenty eight to seventeen. Panthers in Charlotte Cardinals with
newly named starter Jacobe Brissett, coming off a win over
Dallas on Monday night, travel to Seattle. If iget about it,
(57:12):
the Seahawks are good. Seahawks are damn good, and the
Seahawks will win this game, and they'll win by more
than six and a half. The Seahawks are good, and
I mean really really good. They showed it last week
against the Commanders. I think they showed again against the Cardinals.
They gonna win and a cover at home in Seattle,
where is tough to beat them. Lion's taking on the
(57:33):
Commanders the rematch the NFC Championship game. Both teams banged up.
Commanders Jaydon Daniels, they're hurting. I think the Lions, a
favorite at seven and a half points, are gonna go
and win this game. But the Commanders are gonna get
a back door cover. It's gonna look ugly for a
long time, but in the end, the Commanders will get
a touchdown and cut it to seven to spread seven
and a half, give the Lions the win, but the
(57:53):
Commanders the cover on the road, Great ball game Sunday
afternoon Niners Rams in San Francisco, Los Angeles is favored
by four and a half. I think the Rams are
better than forty nine ers. I think the Rams go
into San Francisco, get the dub and cover the four
and a half. But it won't be easy and they
won't be pretty. But the Rams are gonna win this thing.
(58:14):
Twenty one twenty one fourteen. How about that they win
by seven Steelers Chargers. I think we want the Steelers
to win. I think we want the Steelers to win,
so let's go with it. Chargers are favored by two
and a half. But I did say earlier I thought
the Chargers win, So yeah, I'm gonna go with the
Chargers to win it cover over the Steelers, although we
need the Steelers to win. And there you go your
(58:35):
predictions for this weekend through Sunday and night. All right,
we get back Field Friday with Demiko Ryans right here
in Texans All Access. Stay tuned for that next. You know,
it's a Friday evening and for me that makes me
want to feel good. I need Tomko Ryans in my life.
Welcome back to this Friday Day year Texans All Access.
I'm your host, John Harris Football Hoals sideline reporter, and
(58:57):
each and every halftime I get a minute or so
with coach Ryan's and get his thoughts on things. But
each and every Monday, coach steps in the studio with
Mark and I and we expand and expound on pretty
much anything football wise, Texans life, and of course this week,
because it's our Sloot Service game, we had to talk
about the service of those in the military. And Dimiko
(59:20):
has had a lot of family members in the military.
So I wanted to feel good on a Friday. So
let's talk football, Let's talk military, and let's talk love
for each other and what this team has got to
do to beat the Jaguars on Friday. It's a feel
good Friday, So let's talk to Demiko Ryans.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
Right here, it's studio with US coach Tamiko Ryans, coach.
Speaker 1 (59:36):
Great to see you, Great to see you, guys, will
all right here we go.
Speaker 2 (59:38):
It's Jacksonville week and we'll review the game against the Broncos.
But I wanted to start here without knowing whether your
quarterback is available or not, among others, how does that.
Speaker 3 (59:48):
Affect game planning? Because you have to get started on
that right away.
Speaker 5 (59:51):
As we start with game planning, we'll start with Davis.
Like we know, we have to prepare as day as
if Davis is playing. Just having guys in a custom
protocol as I've been here, is not many times that
a guy's had a concussion on a Sunday and played
the following Sunday is just hard to pass all of
the steps that you need to pass. So we'll prepare
(01:00:13):
and press forward. As if Davis has started, does.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
It help an all coach that A is a division team,
be you've already played him this year?
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
Does that help at all?
Speaker 1 (01:00:20):
I know it's a few weeks ago, but does that
help in any way for that situation? Any help I
can get out? Take you?
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:00:26):
No, it should help.
Speaker 5 (01:00:28):
That's being familiar with their defense, right, you know the structures,
you know how they're going to try to attack us,
So it should speed up the planning process and just
see how these guys have adjusted what they've done differently
since we played them, And of course they'll look at
us the same as well. But it should help us
in our preparation. We should know the things that we
liked and work things that didn't work, kind of stay
(01:00:48):
away from them, so hopefully it speeds everything up.
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
If it is Davis having a full week of practice,
that's got to be a big help as well. And
the fact that he did play on Sunday against the
Broncos it helps a.
Speaker 5 (01:00:58):
Lot, you know, when you go in knowing that, hey,
you're getting all of the reps with the starters, it
should help him as he preps because I always believe
you have to practice well to play well, so for
especially the quarterback position, so always tell for a backup quarterback.
So I think it's one of the toughest jobs in
the league, right when you don't get many of the reps.
Most of your reps are on scout team. You have
(01:01:20):
to make sure you mimic those reps and make them
as realistic as possible, but they're not real reps. And
then you're asked to get thrust into a game at
any given situation at a pretty tough moment. Right anytime
you lose your starting quarterback, it's tough for everybody, but
you're asked to go in and operate as if you're
the starter. And thought Davis made some good plays. He
(01:01:41):
did some good things in the game. I think he'll
be better having a full week of work.
Speaker 3 (01:01:45):
Canda answer my question, coach, That's where I was going
to go.
Speaker 1 (01:01:47):
Taking all of that into account, you're kind of you
coming in as a middle reliever in some sense, you know,
as opposed to a starter, and that offensively. Once Davis
went in, what did you see when you went back
and you look at the films?
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
Good things, some things you gotta work on.
Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
What did you What did you find out as you
went back and looked at it again after the game.
Speaker 5 (01:02:06):
Yeah, as I watched the film, I thought, you know,
there were times he made some good, good throws, good
decisions with the football, made some really nice el conversions,
and there were other times I thought, you know where
he could kind of slow it down. He's kind of
going through this progression a little too fast. I think
he can slow it down. And we have some other
opportunities there that I know he would want back, some
third down opportunities. We had one down the middle to
(01:02:29):
Christian that I thought we could hit on third and
fifteen and another one adulting there in the strike zone area,
which I think we get a better ball, better time
in there. I think we can make both of those
third down plays.
Speaker 3 (01:02:40):
There were four sacks.
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
One of them I don't know if that was a
sack or not, but whatever, But we were noticing that
the protection was there. There was a clean pocket much
of the time to make throws.
Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
For sure.
Speaker 5 (01:02:50):
I thought overall throughout the entire game, I thought the
old line protected really well. And this we knew it
would be a heavy pressure outfit. They guys did a
really good job the pick stunts, the backstep up and
protect like we handled their games and pressure as well.
They got us a couple of times. They're good d line,
so they got us a couple of times. But overall,
I felt like our quarterbacks had time. We weren't under
(01:03:11):
a ton of durests. We had time to go through
our res and make plays defensively.
Speaker 1 (01:03:16):
As you watch the film, Coach, they they score on
those two drives, and obviously they get the one at
the very end, and the bo escaping and making that
play getting out from the pass for.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
Us, something he hadn't done much throughout the game.
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
In fact, he had thrown it a couple of times
earlier when he had kind of gotten out there. As
you went back and watched the defense, would you think
as you as you looked at it. We talked about
in the broadcast, it just felt like the defense.
Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
Was just hanging on and hanging on and hanging on
and hanging on and.
Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
Doing a great job with its effort to make sure
that they didn't score any points to give the offense
and opportunity and then finally this day unbroke the last minute.
Speaker 5 (01:03:50):
Your thoughts, Yeah, defensively, you know, overall, really you know,
solid performance by those guys, and you gotta finish right.
And that's the one thing like like we could have
finished much better on the defensive side.
Speaker 1 (01:04:03):
Of the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:04:03):
Like you know, we rushed okay most of the game,
and then that one critical moment where we're not having
the lane discipline that we should have and we allow
this huge ab gap escape knowing that you know, that's
what the quarterback like to do. So had him in
check most of the game, but in a critical time
and the crunch time when it mattered most, you have
(01:04:25):
to be able to remain disciplined rush how we're supposed
to rush coverage, not over pursuing standing where we are
in coverage and we should be in position to make
the quarterback have to dish the football right there. So,
I mean we had some play we had some one
on one opportunities where they scored on us, they made
a play. We got to find a way to make
those plays. A couple of times they did get into
(01:04:46):
the end zone on the two point conversion, Like, we
got to find a way to make the play. We're
we're in position now, can we go make those plays?
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
How about Kaln's pick and Derek almost had one which
would have been incredible, great play as it was that
pass breakup over the million.
Speaker 5 (01:05:02):
Yeah, really, Klin, that's what he does well, right when
he can patrol the middle and we are playing single
high coverage and the ball is up, expecting him to,
Hey you can go you know, sideline the sideline making plays.
That's what he showed. He showed his range, he showed
his capability there. Outstanding play by him. And then Stingley
you know on his play. It was a man great
(01:05:22):
job by him. Would coming from the backside all the
way over to try to make that play.
Speaker 1 (01:05:27):
Just wanted to tell him, hey, go attack it.
Speaker 5 (01:05:28):
Be more aggressive with your hands, get your hands up,
attack the football.
Speaker 1 (01:05:32):
That was a great job breaking the pass up. Yeah,
I mean that was that was an incredible play. Another
incredible play, coach. That came up big after Kaymie missed
that one. On the first first drive, they come down,
they get in a field goal position, Daniko Autry blocks
another one, and I thought what was telling about it
was the fact that when you read Sean Payton's quotes
throughout the week, he was very aware of the fact
that Denico Autry had blocked a lot of fuel goals,
(01:05:53):
and yet there's the first one being kicked and he
blocked that fueld goal. How big was that to kind
of get things started, not give them a three to
nothing lead after you had that long first offensive drive.
Oh that was huge.
Speaker 5 (01:06:04):
That was man, we needed at that moment of the game,
like to drive as long as we had the first
drive right and to come away with nothing to show.
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
For it, that that really sucked.
Speaker 5 (01:06:14):
And then so for them to drive down and to
turn around and block a field goal, man, we needed that.
So it was like a big all right, let's take
a deep breath, reset, all right, let's go all right,
now we're back. So really, Daniels, Man, I mean, I'm sorry,
Deniko is the best I've seen that blocking field goals.
I mean, he's blocked more kicks and I've ever seen
(01:06:35):
in my career. He just has a great knack for
getting in the right position and he doesn't due it
without the help of the other guys around. And Mario
did a great job. Tim Settle did a great job
as well, giving them. We call it ali Oopa the
assists so he can go up and block it. But
he has a fantastic knack for making those big players coach.
Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
The game began with that long drive he ate up
a half a quarter and yeah, you missed a field goal,
but it felt kind of like last week, like, Okay,
you can control this game even with field goals.
Speaker 3 (01:07:05):
I know you want to punch it in.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
We can talk about that and those close goal to
go situations, but you were able to move the football well.
When CJ was in there, you saw a lot of
good things in that department.
Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
Yeah, I saw a lot of good things. Man. We
started a game really well.
Speaker 5 (01:07:18):
CJ was doing a really great job, making great decisions,
great throws, and you can tell it was going to
be another one of those games. And similar to the
Niner game, felt like we had control. We can move
the ball at will, doing the things that we wanted
to do so I and I was just unfortunate. Man,
when you lose your your starting quarterback, it's just unfortunate
(01:07:38):
to see CJ go down the way he went down
with a concussion. Knowing the type of game that I
felt like he was going to have, it was going
to be a big day for him.
Speaker 1 (01:07:47):
Dalton Schultz was a guy who had a big game coach,
and has he's had him this year.
Speaker 3 (01:07:52):
He makes the big play, CJ.
Speaker 1 (01:07:53):
That's a dime. I mean, that was an incredible throw
where he split the safety and linebacker with that throw.
But it feels like Dalton's been giving you some really
good no matter where he lines up on the offense.
Having him back, I then we missed him in practice,
but he's able to practice Friday and then play in
the game on Sunday. How big was he and how
big has he been for your offense?
Speaker 5 (01:08:09):
Coach, Yeah, Dltan's been really really huge for offense. Seeing
that he's a guy you talk about trustworthy. Right, he's
exactly where he's supposed to be on his routes. Like,
you get him the ball, he has your hands to
catch it, right. He continues to make positive plays, move
the chains like he's.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
Friendly, real friendly to the quarterback right.
Speaker 5 (01:08:29):
He's gonna find that soft spot on his own even
if he's between two defenders.
Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
He just knows how to position himself.
Speaker 5 (01:08:35):
He knows how to be in sync with the quarterback
right to give him a friendly target. So he's been man.
He's been clutch for us, making some big plays, big conversions,
being able to move the chains. He's having an outstanding year.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (01:08:47):
In the preseason training camp, you talked a lot about
delegation and that kind of thing. What can you share
with us because we get questions how involved you get
an offensive game planning with Nick Caley? Do you guys
meet a lot about this is your philosophy there? I mean,
obviously it is, But how do you combine and collaborate
on those kinds of things?
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
What can you tell us about it?
Speaker 5 (01:09:05):
For me is I'm watching you know, film throughout the week,
just watching all three phases, and I'm just watching our
opponent and seeing really what they've struggled with as I
look at it from you know, all perspective, looking at
from offensive perspective, like what is this defense like struggling with?
And can we put them in those situations again, because
I always believe you got to show a team like
(01:09:27):
have they fixed their issues right? And that's when I
step in and I'm just asking guys throughout the game
plan process, like, Hey, have we looked at this particular route,
have we looked at this particular run? I see these
things have given this defense trouble and these are some
things that I think we should implement. Guys probably already
(01:09:47):
ahead of that on means like, yeah, we have this
in and that end. So that's so I just come
from the perspective of all phases, like I see this
team struggling in whatever area, Let's continue to attack them
in the area I was.
Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
I was a little mad at you yesterday, coach, from
the standpoint of I'm watching telling all Hufanga and I'm
watching Drake Greenlaw and I'm watching them make plays. I'm like, damn,
why did coach coach them so well? In San Francisco.
But this happens a lot where you do see players
you've coached before, but then you see them on the
other side and they're making plays against you. What what
are you kind of feeling when you see that? I mean,
(01:10:20):
obviously you want Texans to win and you are not good. Yeah,
I would just like to see those guys that you
spent so much time with that you helped become even
better NFL players make those plays against you in this case,
Oh maxim like, why are we not blocking these guys?
Speaker 5 (01:10:35):
They're good play So no, it was just good to
see those guys Dre and and and Huff, the two
guys that drafted out in San Francisco, and to see
them just continue to do well in their careers, go
to a different, different place and still be impact players.
It's always good to see that they're doing well. And
this the reason I got into coach is to help players.
(01:10:57):
And you know, knowing that I had a positive impact
on those guys, those are the first two guys who
came up to me after the game right to shake
my hands. So I'm you know, I'm thankful for those
guys and what they how they play. They played the
game the right way and that's what that's what you
will see from hopefully guys I've impacted. That they played
the game with the relentless nature, hair on fire type
(01:11:18):
play style, and that's what Huff and Dre represent absolutely.
Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
Coach back to the offense for a moment.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
You got Kirk back and Nico back, and they weren't
in the game last week.
Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
But here you have all these playmakers.
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
How tough is it to decide who gets the reps,
who gets the ball. I know, you want to be
better on third down so you have more of those opportunities.
Speaker 3 (01:11:34):
Is that really a big part of it?
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
You know, if those drives continue, you have a rotation
of sorts going into it, more guys get touches, that
kind of thing.
Speaker 5 (01:11:42):
Yeah, I mean, we want to get the ball to
our best players, right We got to find a way
right now. We got to find a way to get
Nico to the ball even more. I feel like we
could have got it to them on the outside more,
just giving them more shots down field, finding the way
Ck was open, you know a lot. I just got
to be able to make the throw. So it's all
everybody working together there. I think we had a good
(01:12:02):
rotation of guys, and then you want to see the
young guys get the ball as well because they've done
a good job. You know, j Nole and Jay Higgins
have both done a good job as well. So we
have skilled players who can make plays right. It's just
a matter of everybody being on the same page, being
in sync, and making the plays that we can make,
especially in those third down, those reds, on those situational
(01:12:25):
moments where I feel like we can we have to
exceale and we have to be better.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Another thing about the quarterback position. If CJ can't go
Mills on stage and then Mertz has to get ready
as well. He gets ready every week, I'm sure, but
that puts him a step ahead. What about his progress
in practice, because we don't hear about him for good reason,
but he looked good in the preseason. He's on the
fifty three man roster. What can you tell us about
his product?
Speaker 5 (01:12:47):
Well, Mertz in practice, what he does is him and
Davis they alternate reps during the scout team period, so
they go against our defense during all the reps versus
our defense. So Mertz gets in and he's done a
solid job. But sometimes we're asking them to just hey,
we want to throw the ball here to make sure
the corner or safety get.
Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
To proper look.
Speaker 5 (01:13:06):
But most of the time we allow him just to
read the plays out so they're getting real reps as well,
so you know it'll be Uh, it'll be a big
week for him as well. Now he'll get even more
reps with David's taking all of the one reps with
our offense. So Mertzy get a lot of time, you know,
going against her defense.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
Do you want your Scout team quarterback to be surgical?
And really you want them to get after the defense.
Please be competitive, Please get after the defense as best
as you can. We want to rip it.
Speaker 5 (01:13:36):
And we wanted up making great decisions knowing that they're
training themselves for when they may have an opportunity to
go into the game. And you know, I just go
back to an example when I was in San Francisco,
Man Brock party, he he threaded the ball. He tore
us up as a Scout Team quarterback right and that's
when you saw, like, man, this kid really has something
because he was I mean throwing side arm throw, he
(01:14:00):
was moving out of the part. He was doing a
lot of great things.
Speaker 1 (01:14:02):
So if you.
Speaker 5 (01:14:03):
Take those reps with a deliberate mindset, like you can
get better. And Brock has shown hey, if you do
it the right way here, you can't progress, and he
can be a starting quarterback.
Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
Coach Titus went out of game beast somewhere in the
second quarter and then leading up half time. One of
the things you've done really well is use the six
offensive line, six offensive linemen, with Blake Fisher being that
six guy. But now Blake's got to jump in a
right tackle and you really aren't able to go your
six offensive lineman group. Did that impact you in the
second half at all, not having Titus such that you
could use Blake in that six offensive lineman role.
Speaker 5 (01:14:35):
Yeah, I mean we've liked that package put us in
position to run the football, feeling like we had an
advantage there running the ball and also protecting if we
want to go play action pass. But you know, we
lost tight ends. Don't want to lose tight ends. Hey, Blake,
Hey step up, man, let's go. This is your time, Nashan,
Let's get out there and let's go. That doesn't mean
we can't run the football now, it's just more tight ends.
(01:14:56):
You know, we use Harrison, used Dalton a little bit more.
We use British and the tight end spot as well
a couple couple run plays, so we can still run
our offense and we can run it and run in
everything's at our disposal, even though Titus went out and
Blake had a step end.
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
Coach, what about special teams? He had some moments against
the Broncos. Bandy had the ball bounce off and then
Jalen Smith recovers. He had Jailing Knowles big return. You
almost got the ball down at the one yard line
as well. What about the third phase there?
Speaker 5 (01:15:24):
Yeah, I thought our special teams played really good football, right.
I thought they put us in position to win the
football game. Right, Jay Nole with a huge return. Really
Higgins with the outstanding called it hip by block right,
not getting a penal there, really clean block there the
spring and four our gunners, I mean Jalen Smith and Treymont.
(01:15:47):
Like those guys, they covered the field. They cover a
lot of ground. They've made a lot of plays. Treymont
does a great job. But down in the ball had
outstanding to play school get out of the way. Maybe
we got the ball there at the one yard line,
but that was an excellent play by him to throw
it back in even give us a chance. But play
had to play with the field goal unit like getting
the field goal block. Special teams had a huge impact
(01:16:09):
on this game.
Speaker 1 (01:16:10):
Coach. This is not just relating to one play and
you may know the one I'm relating to, But this
seemed to happen a number of times yesterday where there
were a flag or multiple flags thrown and then at
some point picked up. When that happens, what's the communication
that you get from the officials. Do they immediately come
(01:16:32):
to you, say the flag is thrown on the other team.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
And all we're gonna pick it up.
Speaker 1 (01:16:36):
Do they come over to explain to you exactly why
that flag is being picked up even though their eyes
saw something to be able to throw the flag.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
Do they come over to you.
Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
Do you ask for them to come over and talk
to you about those certain situations.
Speaker 5 (01:16:48):
Sometimes they talk about why was picked up, and sometimes
they don't. Sometimes they would explain it over the loud speaker,
but sometimes, you know, we don't get an explanation immediately
about what happened.
Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
You have to ask.
Speaker 5 (01:17:00):
But trying not to be stressed out about these officive
it can be you know, it could be trying and
it could be you know, that third phase of the
game where you see something and you think, hey, did
you did they see the same thing, And it's like
some calls, you think it's like holding and it's how
the quarterback gets hit. It's just so many things that
(01:17:23):
that ends up being out of your.
Speaker 1 (01:17:25):
Control, and they throw it. They throw it.
Speaker 5 (01:17:28):
If I tell the guys all the time, it's like
they hardly ever have I seen a real pick up
a flag because you're arguing with them or you know,
you're you know, losing your mind on the rev it's.
Speaker 1 (01:17:40):
Like, oh, you know what, you're right, I'm gonna pick
that flat.
Speaker 5 (01:17:42):
Yeah, that never happens. So I'm trying to save myself there.
Speaker 1 (01:17:46):
But the communications is key because I saw at one point,
and it was near the end of the first half,
and I saw you, Like there are a lot of
times when I used to get in trouble, my dad
look at me and he gets this sign like you know,
I'm watching you. And I saw you get outside to
the official.
Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
I thought, why is he mad at that official?
Speaker 1 (01:18:02):
Not realized what it was, and that was, Hey, you
need to look at me if I want to get
a time out, Oh for sure. Yeah, And you were
talking to the back judge and he kind of nodded,
and I was kind of like, okay, I was wondering
with that, and then I realized, oh, keep your eyes
on you for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
Players over for a time out.
Speaker 5 (01:18:17):
Yeah, anytime looking to get a quick time out, I
always want to talk to the back judge because the.
Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
Line judge is trying to look for the spot.
Speaker 5 (01:18:24):
So just what I've learned is, hey, hey, forget the
line judge, look to the back judge. Hey, just make
sure you're watching me here. I may want to bang
a time.
Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
Yeah, hey, coach, take us through the end of the game,
because the last possession you had, I really felt like
you're just trying to.
Speaker 1 (01:18:39):
Move the football.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
We got to move the football here at least get
first downs if nothing else. Is that how you looked
at it?
Speaker 5 (01:18:44):
Yeah, how I looked at that possession is Hey, we
got the ball back, we got a little bit over
a minute left. Hey, let's get our two minute drive going,
which I felt like we've been good in two minute situations,
so I feel like, you know, start, let's get easy.
Completely end up getting a completion there too.
Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:19:00):
On the second down, we ended up getting a completion
to Higgins on the sideline.
Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
We were out of bounds.
Speaker 5 (01:19:06):
But I was looking at, let's let's move the ball down,
let's get let's get anywhere across midfield, like to give
us a shot at kicking a field goal to end
the game, like I'm trying to win the game there,
and uh, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:19:21):
It didn't go how we wanted to go.
Speaker 5 (01:19:24):
It went, you know, too quick with incompletion on first
and then the incompletion and we got out of bounds
on the second one, and then the incompletion on third.
Just we didn't people, you didn't. We didn't burn enough time.
But hey, we punt the football, we go play defense.
Like defense, let's be supposed to be defensive, play stout
all day. So it was never a point in my
(01:19:46):
mind where okay, hey, oh the defense isn't playing great,
so let's just send this to overth Like, no, let's
go down and let's finish it. The defense is played
great all day. Now we got in that position. Defense,
let's do a great job. You were supposed to be.
Ain't discipline and let's get a stop.
Speaker 1 (01:20:01):
I would imagine coach playing inside. This is maybe more
consistent information. But at the end of half, end of
game situation, how how cognizant are you of? Okay, we
got to get to this yard line. Kymie feels like
he can hit it from X. I suppose outside you
gotta deal with the wind and Okay, well, in the
wind you might do this, but I would imagine inside
there's not really much that going on. How much are
(01:20:23):
you cognizant of Okay, we got to get to this
yard line, that's where he feels comfortable getting to right
hash left, hast to all that. How much are you
kind of playing that in your mind as you're thinking
on the last drive.
Speaker 5 (01:20:33):
Oh, that's always in my mind from the start of
the game. I always want to get a feel for,
you know, how not only Amy warmed up, but also.
Speaker 1 (01:20:41):
The other kid.
Speaker 5 (01:20:42):
So we're watching both guys and see, hey, what's been
their best as they were warming up throughout the game.
So we know the ranges, we know the longest of
where they hit as they warmed up, So we know
what yard line that we're defending. We know what large
yard line we're trying to get to as an offense.
So you know they're at their points, like, get it
anywhere close right inside the forty five, and we're gonna
(01:21:03):
try to attempt.
Speaker 3 (01:21:03):
It this week.
Speaker 2 (01:21:04):
It's the fifty right for the Jacks coming in even
you can kick it a long way too, So you
got two great ones going at it. Quick thoughts on
the Jaguars, coach, because obviously you've seen them before and
it was not that long ago. What about a brief
report on them?
Speaker 5 (01:21:21):
Yeah, just with the day Wars, I think again, Liam
has done a really good job, right, really turning over
the culture of that team. Right, they've been finding a
way to win games, like they're doing a really good job.
Their defense is playing outstanding. They attacked the football and
they found a way to move it with Trevor, they
found a way to score points. And field goal kicker,
(01:21:41):
as you mentioned, just hit the longest one in the
history of the NFL. It was the sixty eight yards,
so it's a long kick. Hopefully Denico is ready to
block another one, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:21:51):
The Amagy Bank ask coach question of the week. I'm
not sure if I asked you this last year, but
I'm gonna do it all right, It's Salute to Service day.
Speaker 3 (01:21:59):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
You have to pick a branch of the armed services
to be in. Is it Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines?
Should I throw in.
Speaker 3 (01:22:08):
Coast Guard too?
Speaker 1 (01:22:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:22:12):
Like one of those five coach man which which.
Speaker 5 (01:22:14):
Is upset someone here, But because I got so many
a lot of family members that are a lot of
different branches of the service. Uh, but I I'm gonna
roll with my brother in law.
Speaker 1 (01:22:24):
I'm gonna say the Army.
Speaker 5 (01:22:25):
My brother in law is a green Beret in the Army,
so he yeah, he's impressed me by what he's capable
of doing. Now my brother is gonna be My brother
was in the Navy.
Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
My mother in law.
Speaker 5 (01:22:36):
Air Force, so I got a lot of my uncle's
in the Army as well. My dad air Force, so
I got a wow, you hit them all man.
Speaker 1 (01:22:46):
My dad probably be mad at me, Dad, but with
no Air Force.
Speaker 3 (01:22:51):
All right, coach, thanks to good luck this week.
Speaker 1 (01:22:53):
Yes, yeah, that makes me feel better. But we're gonna
finish up a Friday show with the guy that signed
the extension this week. We loved seeing him in studio.
He actually signed it right as he did this interview
with us Jake Hanson. What would be his call sign
if he went into the military and flo planes for
top gun. Yeah, it's a good one. Stick around for that.
(01:23:14):
Next right here in Texans All Access, we go one
final segment of this inition of Texans All Access before
well another hour of Texans All Access as Mark takes
you through eight pm to nine pm four turnover to
Area forty five for the rest of the evening. I
appreciate you being with me up until eight o'clock. I
(01:23:37):
have John Harris, your host football and all the sideline
reporter for your Houston Texans. A big fan of Jake Hanson.
I almost as I was good as I was saying
Jake Hanson, I I was gonna say I'm a big
fan of and I almost said his call sign, and
I thought that's gonna be a really bad way to
start the segment. I'll let him tell you what his
call sign is a little bit later. It's his Twitter
(01:23:59):
handle and his nickname, so to speak. But we had
a good time talking with Jake Hanson after he signed
his extension to stay with the texts. Here's Jake Hanson, linebacker,
special teamer, just an absolutely great dude all around, sticking
with the Texas one more year and that's great news.
Let's talk to Jake right here.
Speaker 2 (01:24:17):
It's studio with us on a special occasion. It's linebacker
Jake Hanson contract extension right here in the hun Day
Texans Radio studio.
Speaker 3 (01:24:27):
Jake, congratulations, Thank you guys.
Speaker 8 (01:24:29):
I appreciate you. Yeah, very lucky very lucky.
Speaker 2 (01:24:31):
So yeah, what does this mean to you, especially during
the season. This is very cool to have you extended
during the season.
Speaker 10 (01:24:37):
Well, I mean going into the next It's just provided
me a little security for next year.
Speaker 8 (01:24:42):
So super excited for it. Super excited for me and
my wife. We know we're going to be in Houston
for another year and be.
Speaker 10 (01:24:48):
Part of such a great organization. Great coaches, great management,
so great owners. We're super excited to be a part
of this organization for another year.
Speaker 1 (01:24:56):
Jake, I know, had you not gotten injured at Ilinoyer
last year, I'm convinced you would have you would have
been drafted. I don't think they're to me. There's any
no questions. You would have gone and Senior Bowl. You'd
have blown it up, combine all that kind of stuff.
You just show everybody that you would have been drafted,
but in the end you weren't. Have you carried that
chip on your shoulder kind of with you as you've
gone through. Has that driven you or is that just
(01:25:16):
something you don't even think about. I just go play ball.
Speaker 8 (01:25:18):
Well, I like tell myself too how to get undrafted.
But I definitely keep that as a chip on my shoulder.
Speaker 10 (01:25:26):
And where it is like a badge of like, hey,
people didn't expect me to be here and didn't expect
me to make it. And I think that's you see
that a lot from guys that were undrafted, even like
guys on the Texans like Kurt Heiness.
Speaker 8 (01:25:38):
But it I definitely wear. It is like a badge
of honor and.
Speaker 10 (01:25:43):
Something I like to like, like you said, use it
as a chip to hey, like, people weren't expecting me
to be here, so it is it makes it that
much more gratifying and kind of drives me to keep
continue and continue to reach new heights.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
So Jake, with undrafted free agents, I know, sometimes it's
almost like recruiting all over again once the draft is over.
But love Smith was here already coached you in college.
How much did that play into you coming here? And
were there other options as well?
Speaker 3 (01:26:08):
You can tell us.
Speaker 10 (01:26:08):
Now, Yeah, well, I mean it was a huge it
was Having Levey here was a huge reason why I
wanted to be around here. Like I knew I could
come in and like play Mike and make the play
calls and make the checks and because I played in
that defense for five years and I just knew how
his style of coaching and like this how I played.
(01:26:29):
I knew we were gonna mesh well, and knew the
linebacker coach as well.
Speaker 8 (01:26:34):
Linebacker coach was my linebacker coach in college.
Speaker 10 (01:26:36):
So it was just it was great continuity for me,
and it was my best opportunity. And honestly, I didn't
going there was a lot of teams that had backed out,
like they had found some. Going in, we thought we're
gonna have a lot of undrafted options. But then like
once the draft was ending, it was Houston came in,
and then a few other teams we thought were that
(01:26:58):
kind of just said hey, we're we're good right now,
we're gonna hold off for and like so it was really,
honestly my really it was my main opportunity. Atlanta called
me the next day, and I had already signed with Houston,
so it was kind of a done deal. But yeah,
Atlanta the next day maybe, but it was really only Houston,
so very nice.
Speaker 8 (01:27:16):
Meant to be around here.
Speaker 3 (01:27:17):
Good for us.
Speaker 1 (01:27:18):
Well, I was gonna say something about the Falcons, but
I won't say it. I'll say it off the air.
But we got lucky, man, because we got a guy,
like I said, that had you. Had you been healthy
through that year, I'm convinced you would have been drafted
because all that you bring. You talk about playing the mic,
but you play every linebacker position, You're on every special team.
I don't, uh, I don't know how many plays you
(01:27:38):
end up playing during a game, but you impact so
many of them. And I don't want to say like
accepting your role, but knowing what your role is, and
you know what your role is.
Speaker 3 (01:27:47):
And you take it to the end degree.
Speaker 1 (01:27:49):
And it feels like the more players you have around
at all levels of a team that know what his
role is going to be and then plays that role
to the hilt every single week, that's the more or
successful that you're going to be. How do you look
at that, Jake, as far as this is what I
know my role is going to be, and I'm gonna
go out master it that week and that season and beyond.
Speaker 10 (01:28:09):
I mean, I think it part of it was learning
from like guys that are older than me. I mean,
you want to play on defense, and like every day
I'm working to be more of an impact player on defense,
but I mean learning guy like from guys like Neville
Hewitt who was in the room and Uh, like when
I was a rookie, Jalen Reeves. Maybe just guys that
are like rotational linebackers and special teams players.
Speaker 8 (01:28:30):
So learning that you can make a great living in.
Speaker 10 (01:28:33):
This league playing on special teams and being a being
an impact player on special teams and trying and and
when you have everyone on a team that's doing like
like you said, know their role and try to do
it the best they can, I think you can you
have good success. And I think that's why coach Ryan's
and the Texans have had We've had some good success
(01:28:53):
in the past few years.
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
So how difficult does that make practice because you are
on so many special teams units and have to practice
line back and very few breaks here Jake it uh.
Speaker 10 (01:29:03):
I mean it adds another part of practice, But it's
just I mean, like you said, you know that that's
part of the job going in and.
Speaker 8 (01:29:12):
That's I mean, if you.
Speaker 10 (01:29:13):
Want to stick around long enough, like you have to,
like you have to accept those roles and take maybe
do a little extra work and watch different Like I
might watch a little bit more of a special teams
for this game because I know my role is gonna
be a little bit less on defense. So I might
watch a little bit more of this versus like some
(01:29:33):
defensive film, so that all those things kind of go
into it.
Speaker 1 (01:29:36):
So yesterday, I don't even know if you noticed this,
but I noticed it when it happened, and I went
back and I watched it again this morning. When a
feulgal gets blocked, if the ball goes down the field
and the block team touches it, the offense can get
on it. I think a lot of people know that rule,
but there are a lot of people that don't know
that rule. There was somebody in a blue shirt that
started taking off for the ball. We won't name Nate,
(01:30:00):
we will protect the innocent here, but you nearly tackled
him to make sure that he didn't go after the ball.
And I just I love the play because I've talked
so often about you got the physical skills to play
this game, there's no question. But you're as smart as
he gets on in the field. Can you take us
through what happened on that play, still protecting the innocent?
Speaker 10 (01:30:19):
Well, I mean it is like it's a play that
I mean, it doesn't happen often, right, like it rarely.
Speaker 8 (01:30:25):
Had Like how many block kicks are there.
Speaker 10 (01:30:27):
In the league, not like not many, and we've been
fortune in the past two weeks we've got him.
Speaker 8 (01:30:32):
So it was kind of like rehearsed a little bit
like last week.
Speaker 10 (01:30:35):
I kind of remembered, all right, we've got to stay
away from this thing, right and unless it like lands
in your lap and you can go and return.
Speaker 3 (01:30:43):
It a little bit.
Speaker 10 (01:30:44):
So, but we don't want it was a bigger guy
some We want the big guys running with that thing
down the field.
Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
So wait, not to give away state secrets, but opponents,
I believe are three for nine from beyond thirty or
something like that against the Texans kicking field goals.
Speaker 3 (01:30:57):
It's it's ridiculously not good. So why is that?
Speaker 2 (01:31:01):
I know Deniko's got two of them? You guys, are
you making them think about it? What is your theory
on that?
Speaker 3 (01:31:07):
Jake?
Speaker 10 (01:31:08):
I mean, I think, well, one, Deniko Autry's like the
best at like ever at like blocking kicks, like him
getting his hands up, and Derrek Barnett's also one of
those guys.
Speaker 8 (01:31:18):
Our interior rush is just like.
Speaker 10 (01:31:22):
We take pride in field goal block, you know, And
I think coach coach Ross Frank does a great job
and uh like getting us prepared and putting those guys
in the right positions to make those plays. So he'd
I know they he does a great job getting them
prepared and they they take pride in that job. And
Deniko's like, actually like one of the best in the
(01:31:44):
ever to do.
Speaker 8 (01:31:44):
With block kicks. So we're very lucky to have those
guys on our team.
Speaker 1 (01:31:48):
When you come into the NFL, very rarely do you
get to sign exactly where you know.
Speaker 3 (01:31:52):
I grew up.
Speaker 1 (01:31:53):
I was a fan of the Jets, but you end
up playing for the Niners. You know, I was playing
the Bears. You end up being a Lion. I don't
know how much you knew about Houston when you came here,
But in the years that you've been here, Jake, and
you've been here for a little bit, Now, what's Houston
been like for you? Come to place kind of a
sight unseen and now you've been here for four or
five years. What's that kind of been like for you
(01:32:13):
at this stage in your life to live here in Houston,
be here in Houston.
Speaker 8 (01:32:17):
Well, my wife and I we love it. It's the city.
It is a great city.
Speaker 10 (01:32:23):
It's like growing up in I grew up in Tampa,
so I'm used to like the weather and the climate
and stuff like that, but it's it's a great food scene.
There's great people here, and it's grown on me so much.
I think my rookie year it was a little bit different.
We were expecting, like, a Houston's a big city, but
it doesn't feel like I grew up in Illinois or
(01:32:44):
I grew up went to college in Illinois and like
went to like Chicago a lot, and was expecting it
to kind of feel like a Chicago big city. But
it's like a newer uh, a lot different than Chicago
downtown versus Houston downtown. But figured out what Houston's all about,
and it's a it's a great city. We love it,
(01:33:04):
and yeah, I'm excited to be an that round for
year five.
Speaker 2 (01:33:08):
So yeah, wait, so when did you get married again?
It wasn't that long ago in June said it was
last June. Okay, So it's still fresh here. We are
very fresh, and yeah, it's it's amazing really because you've
really grown up here, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:33:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:33:21):
Yeah, Houston's kind of raised my wife and I like
we've we've grown up a lot, like our young adulthood together.
Speaker 8 (01:33:29):
So it's been it's been a lot.
Speaker 10 (01:33:30):
Of fun, and it'd be cool to say that, Like
we spent five years in Houston and.
Speaker 8 (01:33:36):
Uh, hopefully spend as many as we can.
Speaker 1 (01:33:38):
So we don't want to ask you about how things
are going in the marriage. But still marriage still happens.
Speaker 3 (01:33:45):
Yeah, it's still working all these months.
Speaker 1 (01:33:49):
How is it though during the season? How how tough
is that for because the hours can be crazy, you
don't have a lot of time off traveling on every
other weekend. But how has that kind of been? Kind
of I mean she adjusted to it having been around
for a while, It's it been like yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:34:03):
I mean we've been we've been living together for like
like a few years before we got married, so she
knew what we were, like what we were is going
into the season.
Speaker 8 (01:34:14):
So it's been, it's been. It's been great.
Speaker 10 (01:34:16):
Like we know, like there's we need to take advantage
of Fridays like our date night, and uh, like tonight's
a good night.
Speaker 8 (01:34:23):
We're going into an off day and we get to
spend a little more time with each other on the
off day and we just make we maximize the time
we have and uh, yeah, it's been. It's been great.
Speaker 9 (01:34:32):
Man.
Speaker 10 (01:34:32):
And I always tell people married license hasn't been any
different than what it was before.
Speaker 8 (01:34:37):
So and that's that's the way. That's the way we
want to keep it.
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
All right, One more for you, it's Salute to Service
Week is the Texans take on the Jaguars. So you
have to join a branch of the Armed services Army, Navy,
air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard. Which one are you joining, Jake.
We're sending you away for four or five years, so
you have to pick.
Speaker 8 (01:34:58):
