Speaker 1 (00:05):
Now times to dig in to what happened.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's Texans Monday, presented by Houston Methodist.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
And they'll stop a seven game Texans winning streak here
in Jacksonville. As Lawrence takes a knee and the Texans.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Won't stop the clock, it is over.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Houston drops to oh and three for the first time
since twenty twenty. Texans fall to Jacksonville seventeen to ten
and have the Titans next week at home.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Ouch.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
And honestly, I had to think about that on the
fly yesterday.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Wait a minute, oh and three.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah, we talk about twenty eighteen when they were owing
three and made the playoffs, but they were owing three
and twenty twenty, and they were four in twenty twenty.
And then O'Brien gets fired. They win the next one
against Jacksonville. And I might have said it last week.
How many times in the history of this franchise had
the Jazz come through for you? Have you been able
to go down there or play them here and get
(01:01):
a coveted win, get a much needed victory, get something
that makes you well. That is the ultimate get well
team for the Houston Texans. Right there, the Jacksonville Jaguars
and they were serving it up for you again.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
They were ripe. They were laying.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
It out for you on a silver freaking platter, drop
after drop, stop after stop, and there you were trying
to take it. They were begging you to take it.
I feel like Alec Baldwin and Glengarry Glenn Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Can you take it? They want you to take their money.
The Jags want you to take it. Are you gonna
take it? No? Apparently not.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
You're gonna go to oh and three and here we
are today, boys and girls.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
This hurts a lot, and I am not here.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Look, I already read comments and people saying, oh, you know,
Vandermin is gonna get mad at people's reactions and things
like that. No I won't, maybe just a couple, but
I'm here to say, look, we can't ask you to
get all excited about a football season and then go
oh to three and they.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Had nothing to say, Yeah, years, it's it's fall.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
I'm not here to say that, because it's very disappointing.
You deserve to be you deserve to have your feelings,
to feel your feelings about this football team, because it
is a nasty, horrible, ugly start at zero to three.
Nobody wanted this. Nobody thought this was coming. I thought
two and one, one and two it worse, and then
you'd probably beat Tennessee.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Go to two and two and take it from there.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Now, having said all that, we'll get into the remedies
and everything that needs to be done. We have to
dive into Yesterday. It's Texans Monday, and it's great to
have you with us. By the way, we've got Indie
Klou coming up at a thirty, Andre Ware at nine,
John McLean coming up later.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
But I pointed this yesterday. All right.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
A lot of people are on Tamiko Ryan's about press
conference content. I always say this, and I've said this
for every head coach in the building here from the
beginning of time, and time starts in two thousand and two.
When things aren't going well, there is nothing the head
coach can say that it's going to make you feel better.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Nothing.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
So don't look there, all right, I mean, listen to him.
I love Damiko. We're gonna have the show later and
I want to hear what the head coach has to say. However,
there's nothing he's gonna say that's gonna make you feel
a ton better about validating your.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Horrible feelings following a loss like that. You know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Aaron Sorkin does not write the press conference. It's a
head coach coming in ten minutes after his team goes
to zero to three. He's gonna say stuff like we're
close because he sees, hey, we were close to winning
that game. Not we're close to being the Rams, the
greatest show on turf back in the late nineties, or
we're about to become the San Diego Chargers circa nineteen
(03:38):
eighty one.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
He doesn't mean that close.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
He means close, like we almost won the game despite
being horrible in so many different areas. That's what he
means by we're close. Did I straighten that out?
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, I mean I think that's what he means. Oh no,
I know exactly. So again, you know, it's.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Not Morgan Freeman narrating what is happening with the Houston
Texans and free and at zero and three. He's not
doing that. Okay, he just got in from the freaking field.
He's not happy. Nobody's happy. I get it, all right, there,
I said it. But well here's the other thing too.
When you walk off the field after having watched the game.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
You really have.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
I'm trying trying to think of the right way of
saying this. You kind of have no sense of what's happened.
You have to see the film. Why did that break down?
What happened here? Why did this play take place? Because
you see it. They don't always show you a replay
so you can see it again. So sometimes in live motion,
you got two eyes. You're looking at something. Maybe you're
looking at the receivers, maybe you're looking at the offensive line.
(04:39):
You don't really have a gauge, and then all of
a sudden you get into that press conference and you're asked, Hey,
what happened on this play?
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Hey, what happened on that play?
Speaker 5 (04:47):
I'm like, I was watching this, yeah instead, you know,
so there's those things happen as well.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
But Sean said it well.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
He said, people want there pound of flesh verbally, yeah,
get that.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
That's exactly right, and they're gonna and they're gonna take it.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
And when you're owing three, everybody gets it right. Everybody
should be getting it today. Everybody should be getting it.
Because we thought we had a good team. We told
you in training camp, Hey we got a good squad.
We're really excited about it. Hey, what about the offense
that's coming along?
Speaker 1 (05:19):
It'll be okay. It's not okay, it is not okay.
What this offense is.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Due it is close, all right, Stop stop. I'm sorry.
I couldn't resist that. Well because because okay, if Nego
doesn't fumball, if this happens, if that happens, at least
you win the game. You're the lowest scoring offense. Mix
things as you win, but at least win the game.
Win yesterday and you're one and two, and okay, we
have a ton to work on, but we got a
(05:46):
dumb and we move on to Tennessee.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
And you win a division game. Now you're owing three.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Now, what you've done is you've allowed them to believe
they're decent, that they can beat you. You had kind
of your thumb on them for the last year and
a half, and now you've let them up. Now you
let them believe. And that defense they've they've got a
lot of work to do. No, I'm not saying they
understand that.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Both teams. It was funny.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
I was I was trading text with UH with my
buddy Andy, who I coached is now the athletic director Episcopal.
We were both trading text and it was a Jacksonville
guy and Jacksonville guy and he's like, man, neither team
won win that game today.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
And I was like, I know that. That's why it
was right for the stealing.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
That's why when Nico catches that ball right in front
of me, I'm like, we're gonna do this. Yeah, Because
I looked at the clock, there was like three it
was three something, even though we're.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Going to the fifty yard touchdown pass no, the one
fumbled before I see him catch the ball, and I'm like, oh,
we got the first down.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
And I'm thinking in my mind I had been thinking
at that point there were I think it was like
three thirty three, somewhere between three minutes and three thirty
I think, now you're gonna run another set of downs.
If you get another first down. They got to take
all their timeouts. Now you dictate to them whether it's
gonna be a field goal or a touchdown. You score
a touchdown, and now you leave them, you know, a
minute or so on the clock, like the game is
(07:04):
right there for you. And for the first time in
his career. See, that's the thing that gets me is
you honestly did not deserve to win any of these
three games. But I don't know if the opponents deserve
to win any of the three games you had either,
because your defense played at times out of its mind.
You could have stolen these three games, been three and
(07:25):
all legitimately been three and oh with an offense that's shaky, yes,
but you're three and oh, but you're three and oh whatever.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
You know, you get the Titans who stink.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
There's all kinds of questions about Brian Callahan could have
gotten to four and oh, and instead you got all
these questions going on, what's happening, what's and look, maybe
it's maybe it's better that way to kind of address.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
All that up front.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
And look, when you sit there and go as a
fan or an analyst or whatever, you're like, well, it's this,
well it's that. I mean, you got media members pointing
out Laramie Tunsel's stats from the Commander's game yesterday and
putting that in your juxtaposing that it was.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Aria that is that's gonna happen. I almost gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
It's not a sense though, but it's gonna happen. You
can't do that, well, you cannot do that. It's totally
completely different.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Look, they're not watching contact you are and analyzing the
game the way you are. They're gonna point to that
because because look, Texans, you did that and it's not
working yet, Okay, right, and it's gotta work, because I'm
not telling working right now, and I'm not saying with
Laramie here last year it was all roses and sunshine
because clearly the offense wasn't functioning.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
All you gotta do is point out how poorly somebody played.
You don't have to bring up that decision. Really, all
you gotta do is say, hey, this was a bad
ariane had a bad day yesterday, a really bad freaking day.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Why bring in a trade that you had earlier? Why
bring that into the mix. But there's a lot there.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Look, I was here and you were here, Dwayne Brown
two thousand, I know, And that's exactly really rough rookie season.
They were actually plaittoning him with he from salam and
it took a while and he turned into one of
the best left tackles.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
And that's if I saw.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
Tayane the hallway today, that's what I would tell him. Yeah,
I remember, Dwayne Brown.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
And I asked, Dwayne, I've said as many times, how
many years did it take you to really figure it out?
He said, three or four years. Took me to figure
it out three or four years. But you know we're
owing three right now. We've got to do something about it.
If you fast just get better. I think that, well,
you agree with this. There's a lot there with Harry
ante here, there's no doubt this is good as guy
and the one.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
And you were showing me, Johnny showed me on.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Tape the process, the what led to the final pick,
which was Ursery having a hard time with Josh heinz
Allen because he kind of stumbled a TD tiny bit.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
A little bit and that's just crack of daylight.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Heinz Allen gets a hand in there, wobbly ball picked
off by Jones. Game over, Good night, everybody, Uh, fourth quarter,
let's do this. No, you don't want to do this,
No you don't want to do this, No, Johnny, this
game the NFL is designed to come down to the
fourth court.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Yes, I've also designed that you at.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Victories in these situations, right that no team is going
to be left behind. Really but kind of right, a
team like this should never be left behind.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
The Chiefs got to win. Last night.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
They're one and two. Texan should be one and two today.
Your nap should is a word that shouldn't exist in
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
I don't know, but that's point here.
Speaker 6 (10:16):
It is.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
So you have the ball late in the third, we flip,
so now you're going end zone to our right as
we are all watching it, all right, Stroud first and
ten hits Hutchinson six yards then, so they're on the
move here because he just hit Nico for seventeen down
to the thirty eight yard line of Jacksonville. Then he
hits Hutchinson for six and then he hits the wrong
(10:39):
guy because he.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Was because why because why there was a two receivers.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
You guys were saying it during the broadcast, two receivers
too close together.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Let's explain. They were running a smash concept. Smash concept
is you got to on the sideline, you got a
lower rock basically hit or an out, and then you
got a corner out behind it.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
I like the way I said it better, but go on, Yeah,
two receivers.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
So the whole point is they were playing what was
called three sky. Essentially, the safety is kind of dropping
into that area. So now the safety has got to
make a decision. That's Jordan Lewis or the nickel. In
this case, Tyson Campbell had taken off for a deep route.
There was a route there was There were three receivers.
The inside receiver I can't remember. Maybe X, he's the clearout.
(11:20):
He's clearing they know it's covered. Three he's taking a
corner out of there. So now the reader is Jordan Lewis.
So Kirk's route is the sail route or the corner
out behind him. Schultzer's route is the route in front
of him he's playing. I don't know what the what
the their parameters are. I know I had that in
my offense, and my key to them was you have
(11:43):
to be at five and you have to be at
seventeen eighteen because if somebody's.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Playing in beginning, you're high lowing them. But what happened was.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
One guy was at twelve, one guy was at six.
Too close, and that let Lewis play both routes. That's
inexcuse usable to me. Inexcusable. Well, because either the plays
designed poorly or the players two veterans mind.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
You are right too close together, are too close together.
See I said it to begin with, but thank you. Yeah,
it's true.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Okay. So that's the first drive in the five course.
So he gets picked off.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah, he gets picked Jacksonville gets the ball and let's
see incomplete blah blah blah punt. Okay, another stop by
this Houston defense. Texans get the ball back and punt.
They don't move it. They go three and out ouch
at twelve oweight to go in the fourth, Jacksonville gets
the ball back and that's where Lawrence gets picked by
Jalen Petrie at the fifty. Great, this is where everything changes.
You're down ten three CJ. On the next play, bang
(12:39):
Nico Collins, wide open, beautiful double move Tyson Campbell, gorgeous touchdown,
Thank you Nico.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
It's ten ten. Let's rock well.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Jacksonville gets the ball back and what happens They go
forward fourth and two at the Houston forty seven. Now
you got the ball back, ten ten, let's win. Let's
win six fourteen to go in the game. All right,
moving the ball, moving the ball. I'm not gonna go
over every play. Uh, third and two, we rush.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Up to the line.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, okay, So first intent at the Jacksonville thirty nine
yard line.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Four yards for Chubb, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
CJ. Short middle Chubb four yards yep, checkdown, yep, just
to check down.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
Nice.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Now third and two at the Jacksonville thirty one. It's
third and two and you're you're at the thirty one.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
You're already in fairbarn range for sure.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Yep, all right, I know he missed from fifty two earlier,
but come on, you're in fairbaron range for sure. You
hit Nico nice, but he fumbles, He fumbles, Tyson Campbell
gets it and there we go. Lloyd recovers and they've
got the ball back. And that's when they go to
work and score because they hit the big play. I mean,
there's only so much you can take, right, but now
you get it back and yeah, you like on.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
The score, hold on, hold on what Brian Thomas Junior
goes all the way down and then gets into the
about ten yard line.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
And I said on the broadcast, it might have been
nicer for him to just score here because considering what
we do on the next play, allow them to score
at them score yeah, brilliantly and make it look decent.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
It was brilliantly done. We let them score. We get
the ball back.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Continue, get the ball back, drive down the field. You
know what happens. They're driving and they're doing fine. Okay,
they get down to the twenty eight yard line. It's
third and one.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
When they go deep.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
You showed me to play on the all twenty two
because Johnny has it already, has been going over it
and Kirk is open. They get Kirk open, it's a
too deep look. He kind of gets the safety to freeze.
He's gonna be open. CJ's gonna throw it in the
back of the end zone.
Speaker 7 (14:28):
Bang.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Tie game. But hand on the ball as it's thrown
and it's over. So there it is. That's your fourth quarter.
So if you include the fifty yard line, okay, you
include the fifty you turned it. You have a touchdown
and three turnovers in their end of the field in
the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
This is nuts.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I mean that is That's what he means, like, we're
so close to doing something and we're not doing it,
and it's horrible. Again, You're not close to being the
greatest offense ever. You're just close to being good enough
to win f fotball game on a Sunday, and you
didn't do it.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
And there's a lot to fix here because.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
If your offense was even average performing here in terms
of points per game, Johnny, you are three and zero
in this season and you are talking about bigger things.
But right now, all you can talk about is trying
to beat the Titans on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
And this is no layup. I am here to tell
you right now.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
I saw last year Will Levis, now you get Ward
coming in here. Look, they didn't do well yesterday home. Yeah,
they didn't do well yesterday. I get it. I get
all of it. However, this is an NFL game and
they want this one just as badly as you do.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
I know a lot of people today Will and they
were yes and they were yesterday.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Well, the problem is this. The problem is that. The
problem is the other. The problem is this.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
I'm here to tell you that whatever you thought it was, yeah,
not one thing.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
It's a lot of different things. It's not one thing.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
Offensively, it's this guy or it's that guy, or it's
this scheme, or it's just call, or it's this or no,
it's it's everything.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
It is absolutely everything.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
When the line blocks perfectly, receivers run routes too close
to each other they get a pick because on that.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Play they brought a blitz. They ran a little twist and.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Jewe scrugs, which, by the way, Juice scrugs needs to
be our left guard. Juwe shrugs, and Arianta Ersrie and
Jake Andrews pick.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
It up beautifully, beautifully. CJ's got all kinds of.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Time to throw, and he gets rid of it and
he completes it. No, oh, George Lewis, I was thinking
of Nico. Sorry, I'm back at Nico.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
If Ariante doesn't doesn't kind of trip just for a
second where he can stay on hinds Allen, which he
had done all day, kind of riding him past CJ's
hitting Kirk and the end zone.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Doesn't CJ have to see that the dB is playing
two guys that, oh this does not look right.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
Oh no, on the on the pick, on the picky,
I'm talking about Arionte tripping on his feet a little
bit and then on the place.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
But I get it. But the point is you you.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
We mentioned that, you know, when you talk about close,
there's there's also a partner. I know Arianta is gonna
take it today, but the jet sweep, that is all wrong.
And the timing everything's off. Yet CJ forgot our quarterbacks name.
CJ like literally kind of flips it option style out
(17:21):
to nol. He's ten yards away. Heinz Allen never sees it.
He's looking inside, but then he finally sees it and
he starts to break outside instead of realizing that Noel
is all the way outside of him. Ariante thinks, oh, man,
I can't let Hines out, so he grabs him.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Oh and he's called for wipes everything out, So.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
Noel gets a ten yard game. Murray hits him out
of bounds. That would have been twenty five yards. We
would have been up near midfield start that drive.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
And that's a that's a hell of a penalty right there.
So it's not just yeah, the Jack said more penalties,
but it's also you can't do what you're doing, which
is commit penalties like.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
That you're doing, You're not You're not good because that when.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
You gotta play the hits like that, you got to
be able to make it cant all right, Let's get
to the head coach with Johnny Harris.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Right after the game. Here's Johnny and Demiko coaching. It
was a tough one today.
Speaker 8 (18:12):
Sure, we're all thoughts about just how just today went
because there were so many ups and downs and all
over the place. You guys played with great effort and
getting you ended up taking loss.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Just kind of your thoughts overall.
Speaker 9 (18:24):
What happened next.
Speaker 10 (18:25):
Yeah, I thought our guys played tough. I thought we
you know, sputtered there early on or I couldn't get
things going offensively. I think defense kind of held us
in getting off the field on third down or getting
some positive positive plays there to keep.
Speaker 9 (18:38):
Us in the game.
Speaker 10 (18:40):
And coming out second half, I thought we made the
adjustments we needed to make.
Speaker 9 (18:44):
They're trying to move the ball a little bit more.
Speaker 10 (18:46):
Uh, I was able to get in the end zone
and score, and you know, again, it's all I appreciate
the guys with the way they play.
Speaker 9 (18:54):
We have to play cleaner football.
Speaker 10 (18:56):
I would say some of the penalties are just disheartening
to have some of the penalties where we hurt ourselves,
like penalty in the end zone right where we could
force them to kick a field goal there.
Speaker 9 (19:06):
That's third down right, that's huge swing in the game there.
Speaker 10 (19:10):
And then some just offensively with face masks or holding
things that just continue to make us go backwards, right.
Speaker 9 (19:17):
It's tough enough to get yards and move the ball
in this league.
Speaker 10 (19:20):
So we have to find a way to eliminate the
penalties by and you eliminate them by playing with a
better fundamentals, better technique.
Speaker 9 (19:26):
Wear your hands, are you moving your feet while you're blocking?
Speaker 10 (19:29):
Like all those little things, But the technique that matters
the most, that's what hurts you. So we got to
find a way to correct that and be on the
positive side.
Speaker 8 (19:38):
It's your frustration, coach, in the sense that your guys
play with such great effort. They give everything like they
don't back down even when it looks like they're gonna
kick a field, go and go up ten. You get
off the field, and then Petrie mikes the reception nikas
to catch all of sudden that's tied.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Is there frustration there?
Speaker 8 (19:53):
The guys play with so much effort and yet we
just don't have a win to.
Speaker 9 (19:56):
Show for it. Yeah, that's it, our guy. They played
the right way.
Speaker 10 (19:59):
So one thing never worried about with the effort the
intensity right at which we play. It's going to be
high for high intensity every single down. But you know
what we gotta do is we got to be able
to protect the football right this game. That's the frustrating
part about it comes all down to the football to me,
like we gave it away three times, right, two times
(20:20):
in the red area where those are at least field
goals or he's scoring touchdowns. And then you know, we
take it away once defensively to set us up. But
we cannot turn the ball over three times and expect
to win.
Speaker 9 (20:32):
In this league.
Speaker 8 (20:33):
Cut your defense after that drive after the missfield goal,
they went fifty eight yards of that drive, and then
really after that, you guys held him in check other
than one explosive What can you say about your defense
effort today?
Speaker 10 (20:43):
Yeah, I really like the way the guys play. They
executed the game playing really well today. Really proud of
the guys for rebound and playing playing how we expect
to play the right way. You know, even you know
we lose thingley, Treymond steps in and he plays a
lot of meaningful snaps there. He did a really good
job for us, and they played together, they played collect
they did what I asked him to do right, and
(21:04):
they gave us a chance to win this game.
Speaker 8 (21:07):
We go back home another division opponent.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
What's the key?
Speaker 8 (21:10):
Obviously, get turned around and getting went on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Coach.
Speaker 9 (21:13):
Yeah, the key for us man is to play clean.
Speaker 10 (21:15):
It's to start faster, right, We got to get off
to a faster start, try to sustain more drives offensively again,
and think this game here where this team beat us
in the tin of possession. We got to possess the
football more. We got to stay on the field third down.
We got to be able to convert more third down
so we can stay on the field more and sustain
(21:36):
long drives and we gotta score points.
Speaker 9 (21:38):
Coach, I appreciate, thank you, all right, thanks John.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
All right, that's John Harris with coach Demiko Ryans after
the game. Four for fifteen and third downs yesterday. Ouch,
two for nine, two for nine, four fifteen. That's just terrible.
That's just not exactly.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
I mean, that's been epidemic. That's been the last three weeks.
That's that's not how you have to have you win
in this league. Just put it that way.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
The first team in history apparently to allow what is
a total fifty five points fifty one, fifty one, fifty one.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
And fourteen twenty seventeen fifty one. Okay, So and we
scored thirty eight. I think it's fifty five or less
as the stat and you're owing three. That's never happened
before in history. Usually if you're oh and three, you're
giving up a lot of points.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
But as I.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
Recall when they were owing three and eighteen, well, the
game against Tennessee was a pretty.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Tight game, like twenty to seven there.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
And I'm trying to remember how I felt about that
oh and three versus this.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
So I was thinking the same thing this morning because.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
That and three I felt like, Oh, I felt like
we're close to winning some of those games, you know,
especially Tennessee.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
That's what it could have should have for sure.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
I mean, they had Blaine Gabbert starting that game, Derek Henry,
that were running the wild Henry and all that. And
I don't want to get too bogged down in this,
but I think the key to that one was they
just started winning the close games. And anybody who reminisces
about that season thinking they were in a big celebration
mode as they were going through that winning streak, I
want to point out the fans and media were really
(23:04):
disappointed with the way they were winning.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
They're winning, but they're not winning the right way. Not
too close.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
They a lot of ugly wins, a lot of like
last second, oh my gosh, I can't believe he did that?
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Did that now? A lot of really pretty stuff too.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
They overtime went over Dallas the pick six Jjo against Buffalo,
but it was kind of an ugly game all the
way through against Buffalo.
Speaker 5 (23:23):
I mean, the one I got it started was an
overtime win when you scored thirty seven points.
Speaker 6 (23:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
I mean they erupted offensively in that game against the
Colts and went deep into overtime and finally won it.
The point is this, look, I'm not saying the offense
is going to completely turn it around here, but fix this,
Fix that, fix a couple of things, and maybe you're
playing well enough that you can win some games with
this defense.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
You can start winning a little bit with this defense.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
The remedy to me is how long will it take,
if ever, how long will.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
It take for you to get back to five hundred.
Let's just take it from there.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
If you can go six and three, Okay, now you're
six and six and you got five games left to
get over the hump and do something with that.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
You're talking about winning six in row. No, we No,
I'm talking about going six and three in the next nine.
Oh oh, six and three, next nine.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
Okay, okay, so I'm six and six after twelve somehow.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
If you can do that, if you can do that,
you have a chance. I always that's a lot to do. Now,
that's a lot to do. They have to play a
whole lot better. But I look at these macro things
because look, I'm interested in this and they are too.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
There's nobody in this building that's quitting.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
Nobody in this building saying wait till next year, all right,
and all you can do is win Sunday. But you know,
I kind of zoom out and check out the whole
situation and say, you know, clearly you got to find
something here to perform better offensively. And I'm not putting
it all in the offense, but let's put it all
the offense. Johnny, Come on, this defense is good to go.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
You have a norm.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
Playoff me deep, playoff run, if not more type defense here.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
For sure.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
If you are putting up twenty one points a game,
you're three and zero, and we're talking about a completely
different situation, and the defense plays better, Like he said,
get off to a good start firing off the ball,
get a lead, get a double digit lead, oh my gosh,
or a two score lead.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
Imagine that.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Imagine what this defense could do firing off when you're
forced into a pass situation, a must pass situation. Now,
I know against the Bucks end of the game, but
they were at fourth and ten. They didn't get it.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
I get it.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
I understand all that. That's one instance. I'm just saying
if you could do that on a not regular basis,
but maybe one out of every couple of games, maybe
one out of every three games, get a two score lead.
I'm rambling now, but I just think that if you
can win Sunday, you take it from there, you take
your shot at Baltimore, and you take the whole season
from there, because you get the buy if you can
(25:45):
hit the buye somehow at two and three.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Imagine that.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
But that's going to be a herculean effort, because, yeah,
you can beat Tennessee. You can also lose to Tennessee, clearly,
but you can beat Tennessee. You've never won in Baltimore.
We'll be talking about that next Monday. I hope to
be talking about it next Monday. Trying to win in
a row, because that would be pretty nice. The under
these circumstances, we've played three games. Three games. Here are
the point totals nine, fourteen, nineteen, twenty, ten, seventeen. Nobody
(26:13):
is playing good offense in these games because right A,
our offense has done nothing and b our defense is
at a it's at a level that I'm like, holy crap.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
And we kind of knew that this was gonna be
the case.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
I just think that back in training camp, and I
think back to it when people would ask.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Me, they would say, well, good are we here?
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Good at me?
Speaker 1 (26:31):
I'm like, hey, this defense is super Bowl ready, man, and.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
They're showing it. And we knew the offense, but what
about the offense. Well, it's gonna be a work in progress. Okay,
well when is it gonna be finished? And they're like, well,
they probably ain't gonna be finished. No, I finished yet,
but it certainly I certainly thought it'd be a few
steps ahead such that it wouldn't make backbreaking mistakes like
it's made in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
All three weeks.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
It's like we had to move back into the house
before it was renovated. All right, the kitchen still has
like plastic sheets and there's dust.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
In the fourth quarter in the first game, rooms fumble
the first game, can't score from the one yard line
in the second game. Three turnovers in the fourth quarter
in the red zone, or at least the turnover to
place in the red zone in the final game.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
It's it's it's tough. It's tough to digest. Okay, let's
try to solve the problems. Analyze and solve with n
dy Kaluk coming up next here on Texans Monday, presented
by Houston Methodist Emergency Care Center is open for you.
You hope you never need them, but if you do,
they are there, and you know they're right down the
street from wherever you're listening right now. Houston Methodist Emergency
(27:38):
Care Centers. You log out to Houston Methodist dot org
slash er for more information. Houston Methodist Leading Medicine the
official healthcare provider of the Houston Texans.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
It's Texans Monday. Now back to Texans Monday.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
Lawrence in the guys Allan moves up to the line
for past protection.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Lawrence gets the snack. Lawrence has time launch, gets rid
of it right.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Side and picked off Petree with it at midfield.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
The Texans get a takeaway jail.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
And Petrie with the ISNT and Houston has the ball
with fifty yards to go to tie the game. Oh yes,
that was a nice moment, but obviously not enough. The
next play was a touchdown pass from CJ. Stroud to
Nico Collins. Nico had a big day statistically, no doubt,
and that was a big play right there. Your big
time players have to come through. But the Nico fumble again,
(28:31):
is it carelessness or is it just a great play
by Campbell?
Speaker 1 (28:34):
We can debate that. CJ.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
With the two picks in the fourth quarter, ouch, I
mean they had opportunity after opportunity and did not come through.
And it's similar to the Rams game. It's similar to
the Bucks game. Here we are again on a Monday
after a loss with Tennessee coming up on Sunday, and
dy Kalu joins us. Now, good morning, en d all right,
how did you see it? Very frustrating. Oh and three,
(28:59):
we didn't think it could happen or it would happen.
Here it is happening.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Good morning. What do you think?
Speaker 6 (29:04):
Good morning? Good morning?
Speaker 2 (29:06):
No, No, very frustrating, disappointing, and it just kind of
reminds me I'm not even gonna say you to the
listeners out there. Reminds me that the regular seasons like
that cold bucket of water that you throw on yourself
when you're sleeping and dreaming, because during the preseason, I
get too caught up in the positives and I start
to ignore the negatives and I just think what could
(29:26):
have been? What could be? Excuse me? And I was
excited about this defense. I was excited about with the
possibility of the offensive line gelling together, and the regular
season just reminds you, you know what, there's thirty one
other teams that are just that are working just as hard,
you know as your team during the summer that have
brought in other guys that have stars on their team.
(29:47):
And speaking of stars, you know, to me, Josh Allen
or Josh Heines Allen, I should say their edge rusher.
He made the player of the game when he tipped
that ball as CJ. Strad was throwing it that caused
the game clinching interception. So they have those type of
playmakers on defense, and it's to me, it's time to panic,
(30:08):
Like I'm not gonna sit up here and say, oh,
everything's gonna be okay. Uh, this team started off zero
to three and they had a great season in the past.
Because what I'm not seeing is any improvement from the offense.
Speaker 6 (30:19):
And that's the biggest.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
Concern, speaking of not improving, the offensive line kind of
up and down at moments yesterday it felt like Indy
when the offensive line did some good things, then the
routes broke down when the routes were open and the
offensive line broke down. But I know Ariantaier Street had
a tough game yesterday, And I know throughout your career
(30:40):
you you were around young guys, rookies that had a
tough start, maybe you know, drop the pass, missed the block, uh,
you know, missed the sack, or had just a bad
game on defense. Playing next to you as a as
a leader on this team, when you have a young
guy that struggles, what's I don't want to say, what's
the responsible a building in a sense indeed, but what
(31:01):
is the responsibility of the leaders of this team when
you have a young guy that struggled kind of way
Ariante did yesterday. Did you ever have a situation like
that when you played where you had a young guy
that played and you kind of felt the need to
kind of go over there and make sure he was okay,
that you didn't lose him, so to speak, because of
that game.
Speaker 6 (31:18):
I think that's a great question.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
I think this team has the leadership with the players to,
you know, tell them, hey man, this is what you
did wrong and this is how you fix it. But
then they'll also be other type of leaders that say, now,
keep in mind, when I was young, I had a
season or excuse me, I had a game like this
where I just wanted to put my head in the
sand and didn't want anybody to see. I feel like
with the Danielle Hunters with the tightest Howards, with the
(31:43):
type of leadership you have with the players that they're
going to put their arm around or say and he's
gonna be fine with it. But more importantly, I don't
care about what you're telling me after the game. What
are you going to do during the game to protect them?
And that doesn't come from the leadership from the players.
It comes from the offensive coordinator understanding that it's okay
to leave Schultzen there to help him out. It's okay
(32:05):
to make sure that your chips are going to be
more focused on the side that earsays on, especially if
he's going against a guy like Josh heinz Allen or
even Trevon Walker. You know Travon Walker. There's much to
be said about him not living up to the number
one overall pick, but he's still a damn goield pass rusher.
He's had over twenty sacks in the last two seasons.
So to me, the leadership has to come from the
(32:25):
offensive coordinator saying, hey, we're going to help you until
you get your feet under you. As a rookie pass
blocking against some of these beats every single weekend, he's
going to be going against a stud edge rusher better
than what he's seen in college. So I think the
help needs to come from the coordinators and making sure
that they have extra blockers there to help him out.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Andy, it's the most important position on the football team quarterback.
And I'll ask you is what is going on with CJ.
Stroud in your opinion year three? We talk about the
old line, we need a better running game, we need
all of that.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
What about him in general? The quarterback?
Speaker 3 (33:03):
What would you say is the read on this guy's
about to turn twenty four years old.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
In a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
It's amazing he's still that young, but he's not young
in NFL years. He's played two full seasons and now
he's into another one.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 6 (33:18):
This isn't me protecting CJ. Stroud.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
I don't know the guy. He's out a friend of mine,
but it kind of goes to what John said and
we gloss it over. It's tough for me Mark to
just say, Okay, this quarterback has to do this better, because,
like John said, I noticed it during the game when
he did have protection, it was like, man, like, why
hasn't he released the ball and where's the coverage?
Speaker 6 (33:39):
Excuse me?
Speaker 2 (33:40):
The coverage was so tight that he didn't have an
open wide receiver. So was it great coverage by the
Jacksonville Jaguars defense or is it your wide receivers.
Speaker 6 (33:49):
Aren't running the right routes.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
And then there's times where the protection just broke down immediately.
So it was tough for me to say, man, CJ
should have done this a little bit better. I do
feel like he needs to in my opinion, as a
former guy who chased these guys around.
Speaker 6 (34:05):
He needs to use his legs a little more.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
In my opinion that keeps your the pass rushers on
their heels if he just touched that ball and takes off,
Even if you're only picking up four or five positive yards.
As a as a defensive lineman, you start to think
to yourself, Okay, I can't be as reckless with my
pass rush, and you want to be reckless when you
pass rush.
Speaker 6 (34:25):
I can't be as.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Creative coming inside because if I leave any kind of
lane open, he's gonna take it like the Baker mayfields,
like the Josh Allens of the world. So to answer
your question, what I would like to see, the one
little thing I would like to see is him more
willing to use his legs when the pass protection breaks down.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
Indy, as a defender, when you give up nine nine,
I'm sorry, fourteen, twenty and seventeen, and I guess two
touchdowns of that really came in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarters,
wh you could have made a stop defensively. I get
all that, and then at the end you had to
let him score. Yesterday could have come up with a
(35:06):
stop against the Buccaneers. Either way, the defense has been
playing way way well enough to get wins. How do
you make sure it doesn't becoming us versus them, defense
versus offense kind of thing in the locker room.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
That could easily happen. John, you know that you've been in.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Enough locker rooms as a coach, as a player and
covering the team, and that's where your decoordinator just has
to make sure he reminds them, Hey, this is a
team effort.
Speaker 6 (35:35):
There's three phases to this.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
If we gave up seventeen points and we lost, then
guess what.
Speaker 6 (35:41):
Their defense was better than ours. We should have gave
up less than ten.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
So you have to remind them you're playing well, but
this is a team effort. In the ultimate goal of
the defense, there's all these different goals, like have x
amount of pressures per game, have three sacks every game,
hold your opponent to seventeen points less.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
Check.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
They did that, but that wasn't good enough. So you
have to remind your defense. If you're going to be
thought of as one of the baddest dudes in the NFL,
then if you have to win games ten to seven,
ten to three, you just have to figure out a
way to get it done.
Speaker 6 (36:13):
And it's tough.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
I mean the Texans offense, they gave up three turnovers
in the fourth quarter. You know, correct me if I'm wrong,
and you only give up seven points, and those seven points,
I feel like they let them score because they wanted
to get the ball back. I mean, what else could
you ask for a defense? So it's twofold in my opinion,
John One, you tell them when the offenses and in
(36:34):
the room, when you're in those defensive meetings, you look around,
you know, you let them know, Hey, I'm looking around.
I got your back. Y'all are doing a bankup job.
Keep it up. But if you want to be thought
of as those two thousand and two Ravens nineteen eighty
five Chicago Bears, you got to figure out a way
for us to win these games ten to seven, ten
to three, you know, not just holding opponents to under
(36:56):
twenty one points.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
We'll talk more about this tomorrow. And but thoughts on
facing an OH and three Titans team you're ow and three.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
They're own three, a very.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Different kind of team each one, but you're both own three.
And the mindset going into this one, I mean, this
is you're on the edge of a cliff here. You
gotta get this one done. What are your thoughts early
on about this matchup?
Speaker 2 (37:21):
If Tennessee's record comes up anywhere in the locker room,
the meeting rooms as they prepare for the game. Then
they're doing them a disservice because one of the things
I can't remember which coach said this, and it just
stuck with me and they one of our coaches always
reminded us that a wounded animal is an animal that
(37:42):
you don't want to face. And the Tennessee Titans are wounded.
So are the Houston Texans. So the only reason or
way they should be thinking about the Tennessee Titans as
an ozer to three team is to remind themselves that
this is a desperate team that we're playing. This is
a team that needs to win as bad as we
need a win, So we're gonna get their best shot.
But it shouldn't be like, oh, this is the week
(38:03):
we're going to get our first victory because we're playing
a team that doesn't have any wins. I guess what
look in the mirror that's you as well. So if anything,
I would take it serious. I would treat it as
if I'm playing a three and oh team and we
have to win this game. It's a division game. You
don't want the Coast to be four games ahead of you.
This is a big This is because of the way
(38:25):
the team started. Mark I would argue to say this
is the biggest game early in the season because you
just can't fall ohero and four oh and two in
the division.
Speaker 5 (38:34):
Yeah, and the a they beat you last year in
this building, there's that and they beat you with Will
Levis and then you go to Baltimore the next week
where you've never won. So you you better go get
this one and then see what you got when you
go to Baltimore. But at this point, it is every
playing practice, every walk through, everything has got to be
(38:56):
just crisp and clean so that you go out and
you have a Demico told me after the game, positive
offense and then let this defense continue to eat. Indeed,
I thought about you yesterday because it has actually happened
in Philly and you played on the defensive line. But
the Rams are going to kick a field go to
win the game against Eagles.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
It got blocked and.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
Jordan Davis three hundred and thirty five pounds Jordan Davis
took off and rumbled for a touchdown, and it made
me think because he's now the heaviest player to return
a blocked field goal fifty yards or more for a touchdown.
Who was the best big, fat guy athlete you ever
(39:38):
saw on a football field.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
That's tough because there's so many and what a play.
By the way I saw that play. I'll say this
because it has more of a hometown phil. I don't
know if you remember. Sean Rodgers, defensive tackle, was off
with the University of Texas, went on to have a
great career. I'll never forget because back then, in the
late early two thousands, we would all many of us
(40:03):
at all, but many, many NFL players would come to
Houston in the offseason to workout. And I've always heard
of Seawan Rodgers and at the time, dude stood six five,
three hundred and twenty pounds, and I was more of
an edge rusher, fast guy. So when it was time
to run gassers doing the workout, that was.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
Kind of my thing.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
You know that that was where you know, I got
to show my speed and my endurance. And I'll never forget.
One day, Julius Peppers was there, Charles Woods and Seawan
Rodgers and Danny Arnold, our trainer broke us up into groups.
So the D line We're all running our gases together.
And as I'm running, you know, I'm thinking, okay, I'm
probably five yards ahead of everybody. I'm one of those
(40:41):
smaller defensive ends. And again speed was my thing, and
I just kept hearing this breathing and footsteps like right
behind me. And I finally turned around and it was
Sean Rogers, and I was like, how was this dude
that out weighs me by fifty pounds and in six'
five just keeping up with me on my Gassers AND
i sped, up he sped, Up and so that was
(41:01):
one of the most impressive things That i've witnessed as
far as working out with, Somebody and how grave of an,
athlete somebody so. Big then you watch them on the,
field you see. It so, Yeah Sean, rodgers WHEN i
think of great big men in their, athleticism is the
guy that comes to.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
Mind all, right let's talk about something. Happy The rice
als N d here we got At. Navy they had
that NATIONAL tv. Window, okay THE nfl was up against
it in prime On, thursday but they Beat charlotte and
they got some.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
Love they got some. Love the next.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
DAY i THINK i wanted the hot take shows and
they Have navy on the road this.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Week what do you? Think AND D.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
I'm getting you know this This obviously With, rice we
can't look at any opponent and, say, oh that wasn't
a real. Test this is the real. Test but But,
navy those are some studs out. THERE i think they're
undefeated If i'm not. Mistaken they run a similar type
offense as As. Rice If rice wins this, game, Oh
i'm gonna be y'all are gonna hate having me. On
(42:00):
y'all gonna because that's gonna be a big. Win that's
gonna be one that we can get excited. About But
i'm just excited first year head, coach the. EXCITEMENT i
love what he's. Doing and here's the. Thing when you
have a new head coach and a lot of those
guys they intern in the, OFFICE i pull them to
the side And i'm, like, man tell me the.
Speaker 6 (42:18):
Truth you like this guy to a.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
T i've talked about six current guys that they all love.
Them they all love. Them they really like the energy
that he's bringing and you see the way they play
for him on the. Field but this is gonna be a,
huge huge test Against navy coming.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
Up, yeah maybe it's just such a unique. Offense, YEAH
i mean it's it really.
Speaker 5 (42:38):
Is But Scott abel From, davidson that's that strikes at
The Harris hearts because my father in, law my two
brothers in, law they all went To.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
Davidson you And Steph. Curry, Yeah Steph, curry my. Family
here we, go and y thanks so much for joining.
Us we'll catch up.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Tomorrow all.
Speaker 6 (42:55):
Y'all keep up the good.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
Work all, right.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
Great to visit WITH. Nd it's always fun standing all?
Right coming up themes to a rough? Start what are
they and how to avoid? Them let's talk about. That
because The texans are zero and three and you Have
i'm gonna call this the must. Win, OKAY i didn't
call The jags game the must, win but this next
(43:17):
one is the must win unless you want to be
the first zero to four team in history to reel,
off you know, whatever thirteen in a row and do incredible.
THINGS i don't, know but let's talk about. That andre
wher is going to join. Us let's talk about the
hurry up. Offense is that the solution or one of?
Them what about C. J? Stratt it's all coming up
here On Texans. Monday now More Texans. Monday three receivers
(43:41):
to the left, Side shultz one of, them second and,
fourth The jags thirty Two stratt and the gun one.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
Back what he. MARKS cj gets the. SNAP cj. Plants
he throws daft field to his left that's picked off
at the twenty.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
Yard line and brought down at the twenty six yard.
Line Jordan Lewis, Stroud i've the left side of the.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
Field throw. It lewis got the, pick second.
Speaker 7 (44:02):
Of the year For.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
Stroud that's When lewis is playing two receivers who were
too close. Together that's my technical. Explanation johnny gave you
the real exs and. O's i'm just going to tell
you that that two guys were too close together, somehow some,
WAY i don't know whose fault that. Is and Then
lewis was able to sort of patrol the. AREA cj
probably should not have let go of that. Football that's
(44:23):
my expert. Analysis and here we. Go But i'm here
to talk about. This oh and, three start the times
in the. History i've got the whole history of the
franchise in my.
Speaker 1 (44:32):
Head you know, This.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
Johnny when this team has gotten off to bad, starts
and this team's known for rebounding from bad. Starts we
talked about oh and, two two and five in twenty,
fifteen two and, five and you win the division two and,
five all, right twenty, eighteen oh and three nine in a,
row win the, division all? Right talked about oh and
two two years, ago win the. Division all, right that.
(44:55):
Happened but you've also had bad starts where you don't
rebound four and twenty twenty coach gets.
Speaker 1 (45:00):
Fired done all, right you win four games that. Year
there have been.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
Others there have been times when this team was supposed
to be, good in some, cases supposed to be really,
good and.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
Wasn't all.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
Right so two thousand and, five they're supposed to be.
Good they're coming off seven and, nine should have been
eight and. Eight they're supposed to be good or good
enough to go nine and, seven, say and they go
to in, fourteen twenty. Thirteen, yep they're supposed to be
great or at least very, good because they're coming off
twelve and. Four they melted down at the. End but come,
on they're, talented they should be. Good they should be
(45:33):
a ten, eleven twelve win. Team come, on and they
go to and. Fourteen that happens as well the times
where they've melted down in seasons where they're supposed to be.
Good the theme is they didn't do enough to improve
the team in the, offseason or they did some things
and they weren't the right things to improve the.
Speaker 7 (45:55):
Team.
Speaker 1 (45:56):
Right that has.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Happened twenty, twenty they did some, things Took hop, out
and they did some. Things they replaced them with some
good receivers as a, group decent, receivers no, question and
they led the league in passing that, year in passing.
Speaker 1 (46:09):
Yardage but they didn't.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
Do enough to improve the football team defensive side of the.
Ball whatever you want to, say weird, YEAR, covid but
STILL i mean teams someone's gonna, win and they. Didn't
two thousand and, five they didn't do enough to improve
the football, team and they took Out Aaron glenn and
they thought, that, okay we're on our way, here and
they weren't on their.
Speaker 1 (46:27):
Way they were.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
Terrible offensive performance melted. Down we don't have to overanalyze.
That twenty, thirteen we all know what. Happened they started
turning the ball over pick. Sixes the turnovers were. Killer
defense started to get a little bit. Older you, know
some guys were getting a little bit older on that,
team and it was a. Meltdown they lost a lot
(46:49):
of close, games a lot of really close.
Speaker 1 (46:51):
Games so we could talk about close.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
Losses that doesn't mean that you're gonna be, good because
this league is.
Speaker 1 (46:59):
All twenty twenty two is a perfect example of. That we.
HAD i don't know how many close.
Speaker 5 (47:03):
LOSSES i, mean how many times in twenty twenty two
did we go to the fourth quarter either leading or
within a.
Speaker 3 (47:09):
Score this is twenty twenty two With Davis mills as
before we, start we.
Speaker 5 (47:13):
Stunk we were not a good football. Team, yeah we
did not play well that. Year we were not, good
and we were so close going into the fourth, quarter
and that to, ME i thought about. This i've thought
about this a lot Because i've thought about our playoff,
losses especially in divisual playoff round, games and what hits
(47:33):
me is that the teams that go to THE Afc
championship or that go to The Super bowl end up
being the teams that have the, players that have the
quarterbacks that make the big plays in the third and
fourth quarters at all. TIMES i feel often to have
the quarterback to do, that but right now we're not
(47:57):
making those plays. Offensively and, look you can't BLAME cj
for you, Know dari's fumble IN. La you can't BLAME
cj for the fumble you know Of, nico the Interception George. Lewis,
yeah the interception down down the, field the last one
That Antonio johnson picks. Off, yeah the ball gets. HIT i,
mean that's you. Know but my point of that IS
(48:19):
i thought about The chiefs and The patriots and The,
ravens all teams that beat us individual playoff round.
Speaker 1 (48:25):
Games they make plays in.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
The second half and in the fourth. Quarter remember we
went To New england twenty. Sixteen we're down, eight but
we have the ball at their ten yard, line AND
i remember going to a break and we're, like oh my,
god we're going to score these. Guys we're seventeen point.
Dogs we could do. That and then the first play
throw a. Pick they score two plays, later and now
they score. Again ends up being a thirty four to sixteen.
(48:48):
Game baltimore twenty twenty. Three it's, ten ten and a.
Half we're hanging in. There Mark jackson's. Frustrated he went
to the locker room before the clock was even. Up
we can't we can't hold onto a picking the end zone,
ball throw our hands on the play before and on
a third, down we can't hold into a field. Goal
they score a touchdown With Lamar. Jackson next year and
we know. That you know what happens last, Year, chiefs what?
(49:10):
Happened fourth? Quarter we're down, one we're down. One chiefs make.
Plays kelsey makes. Plays mahomes does The Kenny stabler, thing
falling forward Finding kelsey for a.
Speaker 1 (49:20):
Touchdown the stars make.
Speaker 5 (49:22):
Plays the great teams make plays in the fourth, quarter
above and beyond what we've been and where we've been and.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
Where they're the opposite of that. Yesterday that's exactly. Right
that's the point when you become a great.
Speaker 5 (49:37):
Team you make those drives, work you score on those,
drives you tie the, game or you take the lead
in a, game and then you just go take the
game from the other.
Speaker 1 (49:47):
Team we had three opportunities to.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
Go take the game from the other, team to go
take it because we, probably LIKE i said, earlier we
didn't deserve those. Wins probably when you score nine to
nineteen in, ten but you could have stolen the you
could have stolen those. GAMES i remember we were IN
la AND i remember we're in a break AND i
used those, words AND i Remember dre, saying that's a.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
Good way of putting.
Speaker 5 (50:10):
It we would have stolen that, game yet could make
a play in a fourth, Quarter and to, me that's
what separates us where we are. Now you, know between
all the great teams in the. League buffalo when they Played,
baltimore what did they do in the fourth? Quarter they
forced To Dereck henry, Fumble Josh, allen brought them back
from behind to win forty one to Forty the good
(50:30):
Team johnny l last, night.
Speaker 1 (50:32):
The chiefs last. Night they're in a dog.
Speaker 3 (50:34):
Fight but then did they make the plays in The
senate and the second shirt? Did look at this team last,
Year look at close wins against The, colts last possession type,
wins whether it's offensive more than defensive. Plays look at
The jags here last. Year you had to Hit dara
in that last moment touchdown pass in order to win
that football. Game you, know two years, Ago, bengals two
(50:57):
years Ago, Bucks, okay, great. Good you have guys in
this building who have done those things and you've got
to do them. Again whatever it, is you got to
figure it, out whether it's psychological. PHYSICAL i think it's
a combination of both as far as everybody. Goes and
you got to find a way to bring this all
together because you can't have coach and coordinator.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
Jawing, now, look you can you can have.
Speaker 3 (51:17):
Disagreements you can have hot disagreements on the sideline right
which they had. Yesterday you can have, that but you
got to have the result that the positive results of. That, okay,
yeah you can have aggressive, disagreements but there has to
be something positive as a result of. That All, Right
kelsey And Andy reid went at it last. Night you know,
(51:38):
what they ended up winning the football game going. Away
you can have these things and have it work, out
but it's got to work.
Speaker 1 (51:45):
OUT i, mean you got to figure out a.
Speaker 3 (51:47):
Way all, right we'll talk about that With Andre ware
and then some and the nightmare happening with The horseshoe
three games ahead of you in the, division AND i,
mean It's bizarro universe. Time we are living in a
bizarro world Where Daniel jones is AN.
Speaker 1 (52:02):
Mvp.
Speaker 3 (52:02):
TALK i, know it's only three weeks in my, gosh
what is? Happening It's Texans Radio.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
Now More Texans, monday presented By Houston.
Speaker 1 (52:13):
Methodists rout of the.
Speaker 3 (52:14):
GUN cj gets the, SNAP cj, Throwing nico, catching, spinning
fumble the football and it's picked up by The. Jaguars
Devin lloyd has. It nico fumbled after the catch And
lloyd has. It he's down at the seventeen yard line Of.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (52:29):
Unbelievable nico spun ball got knocked out and The jacks.
Recover texans turned it over for the second time today
and it would be a third time to end the final.
Speaker 1 (52:42):
Threat that.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
One that, fumble first career fumble For Nico collins took
the wind out of our sales again and the sales
would be full blown again as they're driving down the
field at the end of the. Game but a pick
as the ball got deflected By josh Heinz. Allen a
pick ended the Final texan's bid to win that. Game
mark Vander, Meer John, Harrison Andre ware joins us now
(53:05):
And trey doesn't feel that good at all a morning.
After but you tell, me what is the prevailing thought
that you have that stays with you following that performance At.
Speaker 1 (53:17):
Jacksonville good, Morning, hey good, morning.
Speaker 4 (53:20):
GUYS i guess the first THOUGHT i have is, this you,
know frustration without the inability to to move the ball
when you have, to when a game is sitting right
there in the palm of your, hands the opponent's asking
you to go take, it and you just can't go take.
It and so that's the frustration for, me is, that you,
know you the consistency on offense is just not, there
(53:43):
AND i think everyone is playing a tad bit slower
because of the newness of the. Offense when you change
things and the, terminology it's obviously going to slow down
the quarterback and how he's been developed under one, system
so he's struggling with some things and some. Issues and
then the receivers trying to be on the same page
(54:04):
with the. Quarterback is it the right route against this?
Defense and when you think your. Way ninety percent of
this game is. Mental the other ten percent is, physical
especially when you get to this level of level of,
play and when you slow that down between the ears,
physically you can't be at your.
Speaker 1 (54:23):
Best dre we were just talking in the.
Speaker 5 (54:27):
BREAK i don't think it's anything that we don't talk
about in the breaks of the.
Speaker 1 (54:31):
Game what are your thoughts ON cj right.
Speaker 5 (54:34):
NOW i know you kind of alluded to some of
it right, there but specifically TO cj right, now what
are your thoughts about his growth in this, offense his
growth as a. Quarterback you, know he had a couple
opportunities there at the end of the. Game you, Know
mark AND i were watching the film again to see
on that last throw that gets, tipped did he have
something he did he Had kirk that possibly could have
(54:56):
been in the end zone for a, touchdown which would
have been an amazing comeback with the way that they had.
Played what are your thoughts just ABOUT cj right? Now year,
three three games in leading this. Offense what are your
thoughts overall about the.
Speaker 4 (55:10):
SITUATION i don't know this to be, true BUT i
can only go by WHAT i see and body. Language
he's extremely, frustrated extremely frustrated to the point where he
wants to let it, out but he knows the best
thing to do is keep it under. Wraps and you,
(55:30):
know you've we've all been there where you're you've been
in a situation where you just you just want to
scream it out and get it out out of your,
system so to. Speak and you see, it whether it's
the past, protection whether it's play, calling whether it's not
being on the same page with. Receivers he is, frustrated
and you see. It i've been there when you know
(55:52):
things are going on around you or things are being
called for you in a. Game i'll just be, honest
and you don't agree with it or like. It that
is a frustrating place to be as a. Quarterback AND
i see it in his body. Language and if that's
the not the, case he's certainly starting to show exactly
(56:14):
that the frustrations at. Times and that's my concern because
you've got to have him in a good place. Mentally
physically he's you know he's going to be right and,
ready but it's it's all between the ears when you
reach game day for a quarterback and you can't be.
Frustrated you can't run things that you don't really feel
(56:35):
one hundred percent confident, in and you see. IT i
MEAN i can't really describe. IT i just notice. IT
i know it Because i've been, there and it's it's
a frustrating place.
Speaker 6 (56:46):
To be.
Speaker 3 (56:48):
With what you have to work with right, Now. Dre
so you know certain people or other players are not
walking through that.
Speaker 1 (56:56):
Door, right you got what you?
Speaker 3 (56:57):
Got hurry up offense, more what do you recommend here
to make life a little bit easier for? Him we
talked about. That THE uptepo stuff seems to be, agreeable
seems to be. Effective you can't do it all the.
Time but what are you thinking in general, here?
Speaker 4 (57:12):
DREG i think you scale it back a little bit
and you figure out what the entire offense can run and, run,
well you start there as. WELL i, would because scaling
the back is kind of going some no huddle where
you're just at the line of scrimmage or in a
formation and then you're in attack. Mode that seemed to
(57:33):
be the best way that they could move the. Football
there were times WHEN i thought they should do, it
they didn't do, it and there were times when they
did it THAT i felt like they shouldn't do. It
and so everybody's kind of got to get on the
same page in that, regard because you're, right there is
there's no you, Know Pro, bowl Five pro bowlers coming
(57:53):
for the offensive line and a couple of extra receivers
to throw in there With. Nico it's what you have going?
Forward how can you best utilize what you. Have can
you Help ursery by chipping with the backs on the
way out and keeping a tight end to his? Side
this team seems right. Handed it's a lot of right
handed formations Where schultz is right And ursery's over there
(58:15):
by himself and he's. Fight he's gonna have a fight
every single, weekend because that's what teams in THE nfl
shop for a guy that can get after the passer
when it's a passing. League so you got to get
the youngster some. Help and by doing, THAT i think
you HELP cj in the. Process but some things have
to simplify themselves so that you can just go execute
(58:36):
a handful of plays and know that you can you
can get to certain things when you need.
Speaker 1 (58:41):
To this is kind of for both of.
Speaker 5 (58:43):
You yesterday we Saw lake And Tomlinson's Juice scruggs rotating
at left. Guard saw obviously the rest of the, line excuse,
me with the addition Of andrews back in at center
and then At ingram And Titus, howard that was the offensive.
Line would you guys Make juice the permanent left. Guard
would you leave the line? Intact would you Take Cam
(59:07):
robinson and put him in left? Tackle and Give ariante
some time like or maybe rotate like they did With
salam And Dwayne brown back in the. Day how would
you guys go about with the offensive line with what
they have right? Now instead of making a making a
move or trade or, whatever just what you have in?
House would you what would you do with the offensive? Line,
(59:28):
Dre i'll let you go.
Speaker 4 (59:28):
First there's a belief that what they have is the
best five and they have obviously more evidence of that
being true than we do because they're they're seeing it every,
day they have the access to, practice film and so
on and so. Forth so you just have to figure
out how to best or get the best.
Speaker 6 (59:47):
Out of what you.
Speaker 4 (59:48):
Have and, uh and if the ursery is the best left,
Tackle i've always been the belief that if it's, close
you go with a younger player because he's got more
upside than the other degreed and the other, guys you,
know and what he can. Do and it's you, know
you go with the younger player, because LIKE i, said
there's there's more room in which for him to. Grow.
UH i think they just got to help him out
(01:00:08):
a little. Bit and But i'm okay with the way
the offensive line is you just got to get the
youngster some help at, times especially when you know he's
fighting his tail off for, you and and he's just
the one on one matchups seem to be a little
bit more that he can, uh he can. Handle but
by helping, him chipping tight, end just kind of blocking
(01:00:31):
down before he goes, out just to make sure you
get a beat of protection more that that's that is
WHAT i think the answer would be IN i would
go with With Juice. Scrugs he's the younger player in.
This if it's, close LIKE i, mentioned you go with
the younger player because there's more.
Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
Upside thank, You johnny for allowing me to weigh in on.
This being an offensive line, expert the EXPERT i asked
anybody else out, THERE i will say, this anytime you
have a, rotation it's a red, flag. Right it means neither.
Guy it's like having two quarterbacks you don't have one.
Right and we always harken back To Dwayne brown and
he from Salam. Platooning, look If Dwayne brown was setting
(01:01:10):
the world on fire as a rookie and, solid they
would have left him in there the whole time and
eventually turns into one of the best left tackles in the.
Speaker 1 (01:01:16):
League so the upside was there and he met that.
Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
Upside this doesn't guarantee That juice is going to turn
into one of the best guards in the, league but
maybe you want to give him that chance to play
a lot and play through it Because tomlinson's played a
ton and we're more Than juice scrugs anyway in his
career and maybe you've seen. Enough i'm not, sure BUT
i get it from their standpoint in that if one
guy makes the mistakes like get the other guy, in
(01:01:39):
then that guy makes a, mistake maybe the other guy
wouldn't have made that.
Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
Mistake it's, frustrating but you kind of got to go
with what you.
Speaker 5 (01:01:45):
Got that's unfortunately What owen three does for. You it
erode your patients.
Speaker 3 (01:01:49):
Well of, course of, course because every little mistake is
like if we didn't make that, mistake if we didn't
make that. Mistake because people don't want to hear that
they're close yet and Again i'll say it, again it's
not like they're close to being this dominant. Team they're
just close to winning any one of these. Games and
that's what the head coach is talking. About So that's
Where i'm at WHEN i evaluate everything on this. Team,
(01:02:10):
yeah all, Right drey, Defense i'm loving What i'm seeing.
Overall we could talk about this and talk about. That
the play To, Thomas, OKAY i get it, all and
the defensive guys will be the first to tell, you,
oh they, scored we only scored.
Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
Ten we have to hold them to. NINE i mean
they have that.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
Mentality but, Overall, DRE i love WHAT i see on
that side of the ball In. UNISON i just think
it's impressive how they Lose, stingley yet they hold them
down for much of the, game still hold them to
seventeen at the end of the, day and it could
have even been.
Speaker 4 (01:02:42):
Better, yeah hat's off To Tremon. Smith the way he
came in and played in the absence Of. STINGLEY i,
think you, know you can just grab anyone in a.
Name petrie, PLAYED i thought maybe his best game in a.
While Tim settle played outstanding for. Well Sheldon rankins made.
Plays these are interior guys making, place and we know
(01:03:04):
the two edge guys And hunter And anderson are going
to do their. Thing bullock PLAYED i thought a solid
game on the back end along with Cij so you,
know it's they're kind of doing they we needed safety.
Help they went out and got that WITH. Cj Gardner,
johnson so that filled the. Need Henry toatoea is playing
(01:03:25):
some outstanding football along With Christian. Harris don't want to
just keep naming, names but these guys deserve to be
recognized because when you do the job that they've done
in the first three, weeks usually teams are three and
oh two and one at the, worst and you figure
out an. Offense i've seen a defense carry a football
team until a young offense starts to come. Along that's
(01:03:47):
what you're hoping, for but there's no guarantees in this
league that that. Happens you see it more certainly on
the collegiate. Level alabama got away with it for years
Under Nick, saban but that's not a. Guarantee you just
hope that the defense can continue to play the way they're,
playing and this offense speeds up the learning process so
(01:04:09):
uh so that you can start to see wins in the.
Speaker 5 (01:04:11):
Win, okay this is gonna be the easiest question THAT
i have asked both of, you maybe all, day shortest
out the easiest shortest maybe for one of you it
might be who's the best team in THE nfl right
now through three?
Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
Weeks don't don't do not do, This johns three weeks
the best football. TEAM i know what you want me to,
say And i'm not gonna say. IT i am not
gonna say that That horseshoe is the best team in the.
Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
League i'm not gonna do. IT i can't do. It
it's a. Nightmare Daniel, Jones is it the?
Speaker 3 (01:04:43):
Truth they're eve AN mvp conversations through three? Weeks is
it that? Torture they're one of?
Speaker 4 (01:04:52):
Them?
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
Mark they punted one time in three, games one time
in three? Games, ray help? Me who's the best team
in the Lead Dre?
Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Eagles for? Me they have they have faced the smoke
in a couple of situations and, obviously uh they they
had to face it yesterday against The. RAMS i, think,
UH i think the Other Kansas. City, uh they've pillayed
and had to had to come back and beat. Them
so they've shown some. Resilience they've shown why there's the
(01:05:22):
defending Super bowl champs or you, know having won last
Year's Super. Bowl however you want to describe. It, uh they.
Won't they won't acknowledge it that. Way but When Jalen
hurts is continuing to do what he's, doing he has
elevated his. Plate and, uh for me if that's an easy. Answer,
now the horseshoe is they're closing in and they're they're
(01:05:44):
in the. Conversation let's just see how that. Continues but
the proven commodity is The Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (01:05:51):
Eagles, okay what's the combined record of the three teams
The colts have?
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
Beat not good because one, Day, Dolphins, titans And. Broncos
one of The broncos are better than their, record you would.
Think but, yeah it's it's not an impressive array of.
Opponents in, Fact i'd like The texans to have that
ours seven to. Two, yeah our opponents are pretty. Good,
okay but the JACKSON i don't think The jacks are very.
Good The jacks were dying to hand that game to The.
(01:06:17):
Texans i'll say, this this is my hot. TAKE i
want you to rate. This, Okay, Uh, dre you can
chime in on, this BUT i won't Want mark to rate.
Speaker 5 (01:06:24):
This jacksonville's defense isn't our, defense but it's damn.
Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
Close oh that's that's, Three. Johnny at least you think
they're that. Good you think they're the good defense we saw. Yesterday, Well,
DRE i.
Speaker 4 (01:06:39):
Don't think there is talented in the. Secondary, yes that's
as The. Texans but the front, SEVEN i would, say,
Yes Devin. Lloyd they've got two excellent edge rushers and Wall.
Speaker 1 (01:06:53):
Luke could the two edge.
Speaker 4 (01:06:57):
Guys, YEAH i mean they're the front. SEVEN i would
say it's very. Cop we Forget. Armstead he still got
some Good so, yeah the front, SEVEN i would say.
Yes but the back END i would certainly. Give give
to the.
Speaker 5 (01:07:13):
Text i'll give. You we talked about this, earlier about.
Additions you know what you do in the, offseason et.
Cetera The Jordan lewis signing went under the, radar completely
under the.
Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
Radar look what he did.
Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
Yesterday but, man he is in perfect fit for their,
nickel like the perfect.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Fit he has that pick on our.
Speaker 5 (01:07:28):
Sideline and then he had the knock the ball away
on the steam route WHERE cj tried to Hit. Kirk
he's in perfect position knocked that one, away which could
have been a big. Completion he was a big he
was a, signing a flee well under the, radar and
he was.
Speaker 1 (01:07:44):
Magnificent but when you evaluate. Them look what our.
Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
Defense, did The texans defense did to The. JAGS i
mean we talked About Brian. THOMAS i know he's been
having drop. Problems he had a big play at the. End,
okay that was a nice play because that really was
a game changer for.
Speaker 1 (01:07:57):
Them but a lot of drops for him The.
Speaker 3 (01:07:59):
Texans he's got to etn who is having a really
nice two game. Start they got to, him they got
To Trevor, lawrence they got the big.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
Pick they had numerous. DROPS i know.
Speaker 3 (01:08:07):
That but, overall that side of the ball not going
as well as they want as the defensive side of
the ball for, Them, drey this is gonna be a ridiculous,
question SO i want you to brace. Yourself The, titans
they give up a ton of yards on the, ground
they give up yards through the. Air ward has not
turned the ball. OVER i got to look at the.
Fumbles but he's only thrown one pick so, far pick.
Six is there a look ahead? FACTOR i know you're owing,
(01:08:31):
three but you know What i'm, Saying you got The
titans coming. In they're supposed to hand you a. Win
i'm gonna put that in air. Quotes what about the
attention paid to this or is that not even a?
Factor they are just The texans are hungry for blood
and they're gonna get this one no matter what it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:46):
Takes On sunday, afternoon, well.
Speaker 4 (01:08:49):
You better prepare as though you're getting ready to face,
what in my, opinion is the best team in THE
nfl right, now at The Philadelphia. Eagles you have to
prepare that. Way don't prepare thinking the other, way because
that's when you'll slip up and get. Beaten they did
it here in our building last year AT Nrg, stadium
and they did it with a quarterback THAT i think
(01:09:10):
is a lesser talented guy than the guy they have right.
NOW i Think Cam moore it's better Than Will, levice
and so he can make some. Plays he can cause
you some frustration by pulling the ball, down making plays
with his. Legs, Now i've seen him throw it from
every arm angle. Imaginable so he's the ball is gonna
come out he Takes he's taken care of it to
(01:09:30):
a degree a little bit better THAN i thought at
this point in the. Season so you can't Overlook tennessee
because guess, what they may be thinking the same thing about.
You both teams are zero and. Three it's hard to
win in this, league really really hard to win in this.
League so you can't over or over underestimate anybody when
(01:09:54):
it comes to who you think you should be on that.
Schedule the schedule, is that's just what it. Is it's
just a slate of. Games and that's why coaches will
tell you you take each and every one of them
one by. One you don't know how health is going
to factor, in especially With seeingley and his hip that
can linger for a, while and so that's a piece
(01:10:15):
that you don't have going against a team that wants
to beat you as badly as you want to beat.
Them so take them. Serious prepare as. Though you're getting
ready to Face, philadelphia AND i think will be all,
right especially being at. Home but it's not a game
that you could just mail it in and they're ozer
and three will Get this is our our get well.
Speaker 5 (01:10:33):
Game, okay, yesterday it was kind of weird in THE
nfl on a number of. Levels you tell, me you,
guys both tell me the weirdest. Result i'm gonna read
off a few of. Them you tell me the weirdest result. Yesterday,
Okay carolina shutting Out atlanta thirty to.
Speaker 1 (01:10:50):
Nothing that's really.
Speaker 5 (01:10:51):
Weird cleveland Beating Green bay thirteen, ten The Minnesota vikings
waning is one, thing but.
Speaker 1 (01:10:59):
Beating The bengals forty eight.
Speaker 5 (01:11:02):
To, ten that's not as weird as the. Others the
ending to The Jets Tampa bay game, weird where they're
Gonna bucks are gonna kick a field to go up
twenty nine to twenty gets, block goes all the way,
back gives A jets a twenty seven to twenty six,
Lead Tampa bay goes back, down kicks the game Winning
fuegal wins twenty nine to twenty. Seven of, those what's
(01:11:22):
the weirdest ending game result from what is just an
Incredible sunday again in THE nfl dre you go, First,
yeah for, me.
Speaker 4 (01:11:32):
It would Be carolina because you, know there's the prime
example of what we just talked about a couple of seconds,
ago and you can't take a team lightly who would
have thought that they could score thirty let they probably
like to save some of that for next week because
it's just not gonna happen. Again but for that, day
(01:11:52):
they were, Able they had everything dialed, up and it
happened right shutting out The Atlanta, falcons who have explosive
skin position players at their. Disposal that's the shocker for. Me.
Speaker 3 (01:12:04):
Yeah and you know, What carolina showed signs of life
Against arizona last.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
Week, yeah and at the end they made that come. Back,
yeah you gotta Be this.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
Is a good cautionary tale for The texans playing The
titans this.
Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
Week not that they showed signs of.
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
LIFE i haven't completely analyzed their game, yet but anybody
can bounce up at any time in this.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
League and you know who else is happy this?
Speaker 3 (01:12:23):
Morning special teams coaches, agents because look at all the
games that turn on special teams, plays, blocks things like,
that weird kickoff, returns their, value coordinators, value the good
ones gonna go up here with this new era of
THE nfl where we want this thing to be really,
important this third phase of the game to be even
(01:12:44):
more important than it ever. Was when field goal kickers
are banging sixty, yarders but also blocks are getting returned
for tds and weird things. HAPPENING i think that's a
highly notable thing For Frank ross's, brethren his, colleagues and
the special teams Coordinator Business Drey college football. Quickly IF
i had to ask you one, question it's going to be.
THIS i don't know how the Long horns are ranked
(01:13:06):
ahead Of Texas tech at this. POINT i, Mean Texas
tech is four and oh and they have the best
team money can, buy, Right, Yeah indiana's for oh What?
Speaker 4 (01:13:13):
Tech Texas tech has actually played some.
Speaker 1 (01:13:15):
People, WELL i Mean texas Played ohstate but they.
Speaker 4 (01:13:19):
Lost, yeah and they hadn't played anybody.
Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
Since so what In indiana Forn oh it's not just
it's not Just indiana four and, oh it's how they're
four and oh with that dominant victory On. Saturday, anyway
general thoughts here and WHAT i said or anything else
you want to address in college, Football.
Speaker 4 (01:13:36):
Well you, know things are starting to thin itself out,
up upsets of starting to, happen you, know you just
that's why you just kind of let things just play
their way through until about Late october Early. November that's
when you find out who's. Who that's when teams are
starting to really identify who they. Are but you, KNOW
(01:13:59):
i actually really Like Texas tech and the job that they've.
Done can't pass up or you, know slide by what
the coops have done as, well and proud of what they've.
Done there there one more win this, weekend and there
there at last year's win. Total so with the rest
of the schedule to play, out AND i think they
(01:14:21):
Have Texas tech After Oregon, state but it is you,
Know i'm very proud of the job That Willie fritz
has done on. Campus so it just let it play.
Out texas has, got you, know a couple of opponents
that they could shake things up for them going, forward
but much better competition down the road for the long.
Speaker 3 (01:14:41):
Arms absolutely all, Right, dray thanks a, lot appreciate.
Speaker 1 (01:14:44):
It looking forward to better things On. Sunday now back
To Texans.
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):
Monday third down and less for the art inside The
jackson twenty, Eighth stroud of the God wardy too is
right on third and.
Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
Short stroud coss it of. All here's the, SNAP. Cj
look AT cj pumpin and.
Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
Firing the ball is tipped and it's intercepted inside the.
Five they're gonna say.
Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
Dropped, oh they're gonna say he's got.
Speaker 3 (01:15:08):
It an official comes in late and they're gonna say
it's Picked it was deflected along the way and picked.
Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
Off and The jags are gonna stop the. Drive maybe
that was wish we'll, THINKING i don't. Know that was
a hell of a. Pick, okay all, right that's all it.
Speaker 6 (01:15:24):
Was it was.
Speaker 3 (01:15:24):
Wishful it's so, AWFUL i, mean, really three turnovers in
the fourth, quarter my, gosh in a winnable, game another
winnable game for Your texans and they come up short
zero to three for the first time since twenty twenty
and have to find a way to Beat tennessee On.
Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
Sunday you are on the edge of a cliff right.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
Now let's talk to The, General john, McClain The hall
Of famer about.
Speaker 1 (01:15:51):
Movies, general how was your? Weekend? Uh, anyway what are your?
Speaker 7 (01:15:56):
Thoughts how about Those Houston cougars and Ricew.
Speaker 1 (01:16:00):
Yes, Okay i'm being able to tell you.
Speaker 7 (01:16:05):
Anything you guys don't know where the listeners don't. Know
couple of stats. Interesting texans the first team in twenty
years to start zero and three while allowing fifty five
or fewer. Points and they're the lowest scoring team in the,
league even fewer points than the team Like, tennessee which
(01:16:27):
is clearly the worst. Team and their, Coach Brian, callahan
he's made so many mistakes of clock, management of game.
Management it's not like they're playing close. Games I'm i'm
guessing that if The texans win as they, should there's
good Chance Brian callahan is going to be fired and
(01:16:49):
replaced By mike McCoy the, final a FORMER nfl head.
Coach and if You're texans, fan what's so frustrating is
you go go back to the first, game fourteen and
nine loss at The. Rams darry Goomble wiley fumbles at the.
Seventeen doesn't mean they would have won the, game but
it was their only chance in the red. Zone they're
(01:17:12):
the only team in THE nfl that doesn't have a
red zone touchdown this. Year and, then of course the next,
week you go ahead nineteen fourteen with two ten left
And Baker mayfield does the second of three consecutive. Victories
he pulls out in the last. Minute that's the first
IN nfl. History so you lose by, one and this,
(01:17:35):
one of, course WHAT i don't understand they had a
time out. Left it's third and as you guys, said
less than a yard twenty seven seconds and they go.
Deep and the big, thing why did they not give
Arionte ursery help With Josh Heinz allen who had been
(01:17:57):
killing him all. Day to, ME i don't under understand.
That can't wait to see What Nick kayley says about
it On. Thursday but the last thing you do is
not give help to one of the best pass rush
for one of the best passers rushers in the, league
who's having an outstanding game against a rookie left. Tackle
(01:18:18):
and of course he Had stroud's arm, interception and no
matter how hard you willed it to be a dropped,
pass it. Wasn't so that's got to drive the coach is.
Crazy he's got to drive the players, crazy just like
it does fans and. Media but they won those close
games last, year and to, me the most worrisome thing
(01:18:43):
is of course the pass, protection but some of the
decisions those guys are, making and then the fact you
can tell it's BOTHERING. Cj. Strout you, know there's little
resemblance to the resemblance to This trout we're seeing now
is the stride off as a. Rookies AND i will
never ever be able to understand how in twenty twenty
(01:19:08):
three you Had Chris strausser was the line coach and
he was starting guys Like George fant And Michael, Dieter
Evan austin deculous against The Steelers Kendrick. Green they had
all these backup linemen having to start because of the,
injuries and Yet stroud was not getting. Pumbled So i'm
(01:19:32):
guessing is something that the defensive coordinators found out when
they watched The texans over and over and over during that.
Offseason and they came back and The texans have not
been able to stop it and. Adjust and one of the.
REASONS i don't think teams respect their running, game and
this game was close enough where you could have run
(01:19:54):
the ball more BECAUSE i think they average like four
point three yards Of Carrie, so but The titans are.
Terrible they're under a cloud or. Controversy this is the
game their, Owner Amy Adams, truck wants to win the.
Most texans are favored by what six or. Seven they
should win this game, handily but as we've seen so,
(01:20:17):
far nothing comes easy for These texans.
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
GENERALLY i ask a.
Speaker 5 (01:20:22):
QUESTION i was on with one of The Jackson jaguars
reporters this week and she asked, me And i'm ask
actually both. Y'all mark You chiman on this as, well
but how much do The texans Miss Joe.
Speaker 7 (01:20:34):
Mixon you THINK i think they missed him a lot
Because joe not only was a good, player if he
had missed those three and a half games because of
those illegal hip drop, tackles he'd have been somewhere around
fourteen hundred. Yards he's a good, receiver he's very, outgoing you,
know he's one of those guys that gets the players fired.
(01:20:57):
Up AND i think they miss him a. Lot AND
i you, know it looks like he's gone into the
witness protection program and if he ever comes, back can't
wait to see what he says about what's happened to,
him because it's one of the great Secrets Adam shefter
can't find. OUT I Rapp report can't find. Out maybe
(01:21:20):
we need to Have Bablo tory do an. Investigation Bablo
tory finds out what's happened To Joe. Mixon and everybody's,
tried but it's one of the greatest protective Secrets i've ever.
Seen Hopefully joe be able to come, back but because
it's such a, mystery you don't have any idea if he.
(01:21:42):
Would BUT i think there's no doubt If Joe mixon were,
here like he was last year when he was, healthy
this offense would be a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:21:50):
Better, YEAH i.
Speaker 3 (01:21:52):
AGREE i think that It's mixon's, production that's one. Thing
AND i Think chub is, fine AND i, think you,
KNOW i want to see More woody and all. That
but it's the fire Of mixin as a person exactly
THAT i think would really, help Because mixin.
Speaker 1 (01:22:09):
Could i'm not saying the line needs.
Speaker 3 (01:22:11):
To be lit, up or maybe they need to be
arranged differently or, whatever but if anybody needs lighting up on,
offense he's the guy to do. It he'll light you,
up you, know anybody needs a little push, mentally, psychologically,
whatever he's the guy to do.
Speaker 1 (01:22:24):
It And i'm not so.
Speaker 3 (01:22:25):
Sure you, know it shouldn't have to Be cjfcj's not
really that. Guy the quarterback can be more of a all,
Right i'm gonna be the great technician back here and make,
plays and you guys got, to you, know police yourselves
if you. Will SO i think they do miss him
an awful. Lot general are The colts for? Real at
three and Zero Daniel jones three, tds no, pick seventy
(01:22:48):
one percent, Completion Jonathan taylor running the daylights out of the.
Speaker 7 (01:22:51):
Ball what do you Think they've got everything you want
in a winning. Team and uh, boy After i'm through
with you, Guys i'm doing a show In, nashville one
of two today and three in the next two. Days
and that thing ABOUT i forget which receiver. Was afterwards
(01:23:11):
said they didn't have anything before the. Game you can
tell they didn't have any. Spark and The colts said
we're Gonna we're gonna win this. Game and then two
Of calahan's own players said they came out. Flat that,
is the fans were, booing they left, early and SO
i think The colts are definitely for. Real Daniel jones
(01:23:34):
has been great in. Shapstaking people wanted him, Fired, well
that just shows they shoved. NOW i don't know if
they Shoved Anthony richardson down his, throat but he is
a much better coach With Daniel jones than he was
With Anthony. Richardson and as long As Jonathan taylor is
healthy to make that outfense, go he's going to be
(01:23:56):
a huge benefit To. Jones that just like think If
Joe mixon were, Here Joe mixon would be a huge
benefit TO. Cj. Stroud but until and you, know The
titans see, this you got to Get Ariante ursery some
help with a tight end at best and a running
(01:24:16):
back at, worst because you know he had to have
lost his confidence yesterday on that last one where Heines
allen just blew by. HIM i just will never understand
why they Put ursery in that situation and he. Disrupted
really he won the. Game there was a good, interception
but Hitting stroud's arm had basically won the. Game and so,
(01:24:41):
YES i think right now they got a three game
lead on The, texans and the way they're, going they're
just a game ahead of The, jaguars but based on
What i've, seen they're clearly better than The.
Speaker 5 (01:24:52):
Jaguars general you Mentioned nashville The titans level of one to,
ten ten being like it's on, fire zero being it's cooled.
Off how bad is the situation For Brian callahan And.
Tennessee it couldn't get any.
Speaker 7 (01:25:12):
Worse, everybody And i'm talking about, everybody, fans, MEDIA i
don't know about people in an, organization but when you
are clearly, overmatched when you can't make up your mind
on a field goal at the end of the first
half and you have at least one or two timeouts
(01:25:33):
in the delay game and you miss it and then
The coats come back and kick. It is that's that's
that's just as they call it up their, malpractice coaching,
malpractice and it's happened to him after every, game and
they ask him after the, game they ask him On,
monday and he doesn't really have any. Answers so people
(01:25:54):
figure he'll get fired if you, fire and then you
gotta fire is. Dead the offensive line cut who has
been a great line, coach his last job was At,
cleveland but they can't get their line. Together their defense
is better than their, offense and SO i don't EXPECT
i saw a stat last week all these coaches get
(01:26:14):
fired after four, games Including bill O'Brien here two thousand
and so one more, loss especially The. Texans people, figure you,
know his end's gonna be able to, flatter you.
Speaker 3 (01:26:27):
Know for The, titans they Hire callahan and he did
not call the plays In, cincinnati so you hire him
to be the head coach and he, Says i'm gonna call.
Plays so you're taking on head coach and play caller
for the first.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
Time these two.
Speaker 3 (01:26:41):
THINGS i can understand it if you're a great, leader
and maybe you're worth the play, caller but you're a
leader of, men all, Right So i'm going to hire a.
Coordinator he's gonna call the. Plays i'll just be the
leader of men and you, know break myself in as
a head coach that, way because you all got to start.
Speaker 1 (01:26:55):
Somewhere but to.
Speaker 3 (01:26:56):
Start those two, things play caller and head coach, GENERAL
i think it was a bad move By titans, management
if you will to make the decision that, way it's
not working.
Speaker 7 (01:27:04):
Out worked out well for The. Vikings kevin o'connalden call.
Plays there are instances where guys don't call, plays and
then when they get a chance to be head, coach
they call plays and it works out mainly because they
got more talent than The. Titans av they're briffed talent
because they've done such a bad job drafting now this
(01:27:27):
year so, far it's, early but they think they may
have done a better job. Drafting but If I'm, CALLAHAN
i would, say, okay BEFORE i got, Fired i'd, say all,
Right i'm going to turn and play calling over to my.
McCoy Remember Brian callahan was hired By Rand, carpark FORMER.
Gm it lasted one. Year the two new guys in,
(01:27:49):
Charge Chad branker And mike, mcgonzi and they did not hire,
him and that's why he's not long for the head coaching.
Speaker 1 (01:27:58):
World, YEAH i tend to.
Speaker 5 (01:28:00):
Agree general asked this question earlier Of Andre i'll ask
it of, you And mark was very fearful that the
Word colts.
Speaker 1 (01:28:10):
Was going to be. Used what's the best team in
the league right?
Speaker 7 (01:28:15):
Now, WELL i wouldn't say The colts BECAUSE i looked
at their schedule and The. Broncos they barely beat The
broncos thanks to a penalty at the end that gave
him another chance to kick a field. Goal broncos are
one and two after a lot of people were picking
them to go to The Super. Bowl tell you what
(01:28:36):
the way The eagles win like that game? Yesterday you, Know?
BUFFALO i would IF i would Say Buffalo baltimore and
The chargers in THE nfc and The eagles and THE.
Nfc but right, now the one that is winning the
most impressively The. CHARGERS i believe they played Three divisions.
Speaker 1 (01:29:00):
Games, yep they beat all.
Speaker 3 (01:29:01):
Three all, Right, general thanks so much for joining. Us
we'll catch up later in the. Week we appreciate the, time,
Guys thank you very. Much john McClain joining us On
Texans monday coming. Up who did? Well what did they do?
Well what did they do well on? Offense there were
a couple of. Things, sure it's the, segment it's pretty,
(01:29:23):
short but But I'M i was dot DOT i was
continuing my thought here in the stream of consciousness radio six.'
ten so what did they do well that they can
duplicate or multiply and they need to do.
Speaker 1 (01:29:37):
More often we all know what the. MISTAKES are i think.
Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
We do but there are certain things that they're doing
that are our effective that they need to do a
whole lot, more of among. Other things on the way,
out Here It's. Texans Monday More texans radio coming up
in a moment.
Speaker 1 (01:29:53):
Now More.
Speaker 3 (01:29:54):
Texans monday first down, AT Midfield Cj strauss shotgus what
HE marks a with a strap, TO throat, CJ looking
cj fiery daft field to, his left Caught by college
fifteen ten to five rock and Roll touchdown kuston.
Speaker 1 (01:30:11):
Fifty, yards oh that was.
Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
So nice that was wise to, get, that yes tie.
