Speaker 1 (00:00):
Zap and everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Welcome to a Monday edition of Texans All Access from
the Hounday Texans Radio Studio. Sorry, I am not more
energetic this evening, as yesterday was a real gut punch
down in North Florida's Texans lose to the Jaguar seventeen ten,
a game that after Jalen Petrees interception Nico Collins touchdown
(00:22):
in the fourth and two stop. I felt like this
one is a Texans win. They will have found a
way to get one. But it didn't happen. Texans fall
to oh to three for the first time since twenty twenty.
Also happened in twenty eighteen. Now, the twenty eighteen team
went on to win the AFC South and did it
(00:46):
rather convincingly, going eleven and five. In twenty eighteen, would
have gone twelve and four had they been able to
hang on to a lead late against Philadelphia. Oh man,
what a game that was many many eons ago. This
team owned three. What will it do well? Its first
matter of response has got to take place on Sunday
against the Tennessee Titans. All Right, a little bit of
(01:08):
Texans news today. The NFL has removed Texans safety Jimmy
Ward from the Commissioner's exempt list after a Montgomery County
grand jury declined to indict him or no build on
family violence charges. The league announced he will then move
(01:30):
over to the reserve list slash pup. Now, going back
to the Chiefs game, the regular season game on that Saturday,
that's when Jimmy was injured Injuri's foot. Now that was
in December, so we are now in late September, mid
to late September. We don't know what that injury means.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Now now we're.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Looking at it as okay, now he's on the pup list,
So could he be ready to go after this fourth
week of the season, because you got to sit out
four weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
So I don't know what this all means.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I'll just I'll be brutally honest from that standpoint, other
than he could be brought back to the roster after
these initial four games and the fourth game is gonna
end up being this Tennessee Titans one. We'll see what
this means. But Jimmy Ward moving over from the Commissioner's
exempt list after the Montgomery County granduated declined to indite him.
(02:35):
He then moves over to the reserve pup list and
then it obviously, as we said this before too, even
with everything that was going on legally, we Mark and
I kept reiterating, we don't know where he's physically, We
don't know where that stands. So we'll see what this
means for Jimmy Ward going forward. Know that he won't
(02:56):
be able to play against the Tennessee Titans being on
the pup list, but we'll see where he's able to
get on the roster if at any point for the
Texans this year. That pretty decent, decent sized piece of
Texans news, and it's man, I just thought about this
as I was thinking about the Texans and the news lately.
(03:19):
Obviously losing you go to Owen three, you had the
Mariners come into town and sweep Dashtros, and then today
it was announced that Fred van Vliet towards ACL.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Like god, dang.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
I kept thinking, all right, Ashros and Texans kicking a
junk right the rockets, Okay, no, Fred van Vliet torn ACL.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Good God.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
I'm not sure what we did lately, but that's a
big kick in the schnuts if you will, So don't
don't love it at all for any of our teams
here in Houston at this particular moment. Now all teams
can respond. Astros can win out get themselves in the playoffs.
(04:00):
Texans can start getting back on the winning track with
win over the Titans this weekend. And obviously the Rockets
have plenty of time to kind of start making some
moves to get guys in the right spot. Still got
a very talented team with Kevin Durant this year, but
gonna be tough without Fred Van Vliet. But they've got
time to get it right. So there's your kind of
(04:21):
Houston sports news, if you will. All right, it's guitar
buddy Andre. Where we had a good time talking with Andre,
as we always do. Plenty of things to consider here.
As we threw a ton of questions that Andre answered
some of them ourselves.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Here's Andre with market myself.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Dre, you tell me what is the prevailing thought that
you have that stays with you following that performance at Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
I guess the first thought I have is this, you know,
frustration without the inability to move the ball when you
have to, when a game is sitting right there in
the palm of your hands, the opponents asking you to
go take it and you just can't go take it.
So that's the frustration for me is that, you know,
you the consistency on offense is just not there, and
(05:06):
I think everyone is playing a tad bit slower because
of the newness of the offense. When you change things
and the terminology, it's obviously going to slow down the
quarterback and how he's been developed under one system, so
he's struggling with some things and some issues, and then
the receivers trying to be on the same page with
(05:27):
the quarterback is at the right route against this defense
and when you think your way. Ninety percent of this
game is mental. The other ten percent is physical, especially
when you get to this level of level of play,
and when you slow that down between the ears physically,
you can't be at your best.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Dre we were just talking in the break.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
I don't think it's anything that we don't talk about
in the breaks of the game.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
What are your thoughts on CJ right now?
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I know you kind of alluded to some of it
right there, but specific to CJ right now, what are
your thoughts about his growth in this offense, his growth
as a quarterback. You know he had a couple opportunities
there at the end of the game. You know, Mark
and I were watching the film again to see on
that last throw that gets tipped, did he have something
he did he had Kirk that possibly could have been
(06:19):
in the end zone for a touchdown, which would have
been an amazing comeback with.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
The way that they had played.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
What are your thoughts just about CJ right now, year three,
three games in leading this offense.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
What are your thoughts overall about the situation.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
I don't know this to be true, but I can
only go by what I see and body language. He's
extremely frustrated, extremely frustrated to the point where he wants
to let it out, but he knows the best thing
to do is keep it under wraps. And you know,
you you've we've all been there where you're you've been
in a situation where you just you just want to
(06:58):
scream it out and get it out of your system,
so to speak. And you see it, whether it's the
past protection, whether it's play calling, whether it's not being
on the same page with receivers. He is frustrated, and
you see it. I've been there when you know things
are going on around you or things are being called
(07:20):
for you in a game. I'll just be honest, and
you don't agree with it or like it. That is
a frustrating place to be as a quarterback, and I
see it in his body language. And if that's the
not the case, he's certainly starting to show exactly that
the frustrations at times. And that's my concern because you've
(07:41):
got to have him in a good place mentally physically
he's you know, he's going to be right and ready,
but it's it's all between the ears when you reach
game day for a quarterback and you can't be frustrated.
You can't run things that you don't really feel one
hundred percent common. Put an end and you see it.
(08:02):
I mean I can't really describe it. I just notice it.
I know it because I've been there, and it's a
frustrating place to be.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
With what you have to work with right now, dre.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
So you know certain people or other players are not
walking through that door.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Right?
Speaker 1 (08:20):
You got what you got? Hurry up, offense more?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
What do you recommend here to make life a little
bit easier for him?
Speaker 1 (08:27):
We talked about that.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
The UPTEPO stuff seems to be agreeable, seems to be effective.
You can't do it all the time. But what are
you thinking in general here, Drake?
Speaker 4 (08:36):
I think you scale it back a little bit and
you figure out what the entire offense can run and
run well, you start there as well. I would, because
scaling the back is kind of going some no huddle
where you're just at the line of scrimmage, you're in
a formation, and then you're in attack mode. That seemed
to be the best way that they could move the football.
(08:59):
There were times when I thought they should do it,
they didn't do it, and there were times when they
did it that I felt like they shouldn't do it.
And so everybody's kind of got to get on the
same page in that regard, because you're right there is
there's no you know, Pro Bowl five Pro bowlers coming
for the offensive line and a couple of extra receivers
(09:19):
to throw in there with Nico. It's what you have
going forward? How can you best utilize what you have?
Can you help Ursery by chipping with the backs on
the way out and keeping a tight end to his side?
This team seems right handed. It's a lot of right
handed formations where Schultz is right and Ursery's over there
by himself and these fight. He's gonna have a fight
(09:41):
every single weekend because that's what teams in the NFL
shop for a guy that can get after the passer
when it's a passing league. So you got to get
the youngster some help. And by doing that, I think
you help CJ in the process. But some things have
to simplify themselves so that you can just go execute
a handful of plays and know that you can you
(10:02):
can get to certain things when you need to.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
This is kind of for both of you.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yesterday we saw Lake and Tomlinson and Juice Scruggs rotating
at left guard. Saw obviously the rest of the line,
excuse me, with the addition of Andrews back in at
center and then ed Ingram and Titus Howard, that was
the offensive line. Would you guys make Juice the permanent
left guard? Would you leave the line intact? Would you
(10:29):
take Cam Robinson and put him at left tackle and
give Ariante some time like or maybe rotate like they
did with Salam and Dwayne Brown back in the day.
How would you guys go about with the offensive line
with what they have right now? Instead of making a
making a move or trade or whatever, just what you
have in house? Would you what would you do with
(10:50):
the offensive line?
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Drey, I'll let you go first.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
There's a belief that what they have is the best
five and they have obviously more evan that being true
than we do because they're they're seeing it every day,
they have the access to practice, film and so on
and so forth. So you just have to figure out
how to best or get the best out of what
you have. And uh, and if the ursery is the
best left tackle, I've always been the belief that if
(11:17):
it's close, you go with a younger player because he's
got more upside than the other guy, and the other
guys you know, he's proven what he can do, and
it's you know, you go with the younger player because,
like I said, there's there's more room in which for
him to grow. Uh. I think they just got to
help him out a little bit. But I'm okay with
the way the offensive line is. You just got to
(11:38):
get the youngster some help at times, especially when you
know he's fighting his tail off for you, and and
he's just the one on one matchups seem to be
a little bit more that he can he can handle.
But by helping him chipping tight end, just kind of
blocking down before he goes out, just to make sure
you get a beat of protection more. That is what
(12:02):
I think the answer would be in I would go
with Juice Scrugs. He's the younger player in this. If
it's close, Like I mentioned, you go with the younger
player because there's more upside.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
And thank you Johnny for allowing me to weigh in
on this. Being an offensive line expert, the expert I
am as anybody else out there, I will say this.
Anytime you have a rotation, it's a red flag, right.
It means neither guy. It's like having two quarterbacks, you
don't have one right. And we always harken back to
Dwayne Brown and he from salam platooning. Look, if Dwayne
(12:32):
Brown was setting the world on fire as a rookie
and solid, they would have left him in there the
whole time and eventually turns into one of the best
left tackles in the league. So the upside was there
and he met that upside. This doesn't guarantee that Juice
is going to turn into one of the best guards
in the league, but maybe you want to give him
that chance to play a lot and play through it
because Tomlinson's played a ton and we're more than Juice
(12:54):
Scruggs anyway in his career.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
And maybe you've seen enough.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
I'm not sure, but I get it from their standpoint
in that if one guy makes the mistakes like get
the other guy in, then that guy makes a mistake.
Maybe the other guy wouldn't have made that mistake. It's frustrating,
but you kind of got to go with what you got.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
That's unfortunately what Owen three does for you. It erode
your patients.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Well of course, of course, because every little mistake, it's
like if we didn't make that mistake, if we didn't
make that mistake. Because people don't want to hear that
they're close yet and again I'll say it again, it's
not like they're close to being this dominant team. They're
just close to winning any one of these games. And
that's what the head coach is talking about. So that's
where I'm at when I evaluate everything on this team.
(13:34):
All right, Dray defense, I'm loving what I'm seeing overall.
We could talk about this and talk about that. The
play to Thomas, Okay, I get it all, and the
defensive guys will be the first to tell you, oh,
they scored we only scored ten. We have to hold
them to nine. I mean they have that mentality. But overall, Dre,
I love what I see on that side of the
(13:54):
ball in Unison. I just think it's impressive how they
lose Stingley, yet they pulled them down for much of
the game, still hold them to seventeen at the end
of the day, and it could have even been better.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Yeah, hats off to Tremon Smith the way he came
in and played and in the absence of Stingley. I think,
you know, you can just grab anyone a name. Petrie played,
I thought maybe his best game in a while. Tim
Settle played outstanding football. Sheldon Rankins made plays. These are
interior guys making plays, and we know the two edge
(14:28):
guys and Hunter and Anderson are going to do their thing.
Bullock played I thought, a solid game on the back
end along with Siej. So you know it's they're kind
of doing they We needed safety help. They went out
and got that with CJ. Gardner Johnson, so that filled
the need. Henry Toatoea is playing some outstanding football along
(14:50):
with Christian Harris. Don't want to just keep naming names,
but these guys deserve to be recognized because when you
do the job that they've done in the first three weeks,
usually team are three and oh two and one at
the worst, and you figure out an offense. I've seen
a defense carry a football team until a young offense
starts to come along. That's what you're hoping for, but
(15:13):
there's no guarantees in this league that that happens. You
see it more certainly on the collegiate level. Alabama got
away with it for years under Nick Saban, but that's
not a guarantee. You just hope that the defense can
continue to play the way they're playing, and this offense
speeds up the learning process so that you can start
(15:33):
to see wins in the wine.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Okay, this is gonna be the easiest question that I
have asked both of you, maybe all day, shortest, the
easiest shortest. Maybe for one of you, it might be
who's the best team in the NFL right now through
three weeks?
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Don't don't do not do this, Johns, through three weeks
the best football team.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
I know what you want me to say, and I'm
not gonna say it. I am not going to say
that shoe is the best team of the league. I'm
not gonna do it. I can't do it. It's a nightmare.
Daniel Jones, is it the truth? The evenn m VP
conversation through three weeks is that torture.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
They're one of them.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Mark they punted one time in three games, one time
in three games.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Ray helped me, who's the best team to.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
Leave dre Philadelphia Eagles?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
For me?
Speaker 4 (16:25):
They have they have faced the smoke in a couple
of situations and obviously, uh, they they had to face
it yesterday against the Rams. I think, Uh, I'm trying
to think the other Kansas City. Uh, they pilayed and
had to had to come back and beat them. So
they've shown some resilience. They've shown why there's the defending
(16:46):
super Bowl champs or you know, having won last year's
Super Bowl. However you want to describe it. Uh, they won't,
they won't acknowledge it that way. But when Jalen Hurts
is continuing to do what he's doing, he has elevated
his play and uh, for me, if that's an easy answer, now,
the horseshoe is they're closing in and they're they're in
(17:07):
a conversation. Let's just see how that continues. But the
proven commodity is the Philadelphia Eles.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Okay, what's the combined record of the three teams the
Colts have beat?
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Not good because one of the Dolphins, Titans, and Broncos.
One of the Broncos are better than their record, you
would think. But yeah, it's it's not an impressive array
of opponents. In fact, i'd like the Texans.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
To have that. What's ours seven to two? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Our opponents are pretty good. Okay, the jackson I don't
think the Jacks are very good. The Jacks were dying
to hand that game to the Texans. I'll say this,
this is my hot take. I want you to rate this.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Okay, uh Dre, you can chime in on this, but
I won't want Mark to rate this. Jacksonville's defense isn't
our defense, but it's damn close.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Oh that's that's three, Johnny. At least you think they're
that good.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
You think they're the good defense we saw yesterday, Uh Dre.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
I don't think there is talented in the secondary. Yes,
that's as as the Texans. But the front seven, uh,
I would say, yes, Devin Lloyd, uh they've got two
excellent edge rushers and Walt Luke.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Edge.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
Yeah. I mean there at the front seven, I would
say it's very comp We forget Armstead, He's still got
some good So yeah, the front seven, I would say yes,
But the back end I would certainly give. Give to
the text.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
I'll give you.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
We talked about this earlier about additions. You know what
you do in the off season, et cetera. The Jordan
Lewis signing went under the radar, completely under the radar.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Look what he did yesterday. But man, he is the
perfect fit for their nickel, like the perfect fit.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
He has that pick on our sideline and then he
had the knock the ball away on the seam route
where CJ tried to hit Kirk. He's in perfect position
knock that one away, which could have been a big completion.
He was a big He was a signing that flee
well under the radar, and he was magnificent.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
But when you evaluate them, look what our defense did.
The Texans defense did to the Jags. I mean we
talked about Brian Thomas. I know he's been having drop problems.
He had a big play at the end. Okay, that
was a nice play because that really was a game
changer for them, but a lot of drops for him.
The Texans got to etn who was having a really
nice two game start. They got to him, They got
to Trevor Lawrence, they got the big pick. They had
(19:29):
numerous drops.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
I know that.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
But overall that side of the ball not going as
well as they want as the defensive side of the
ball for them, Dray, this is gonna be a ridiculous question,
so I want you to brace yourself. The Titans, they
give up a ton of yards on the ground, they
give up yards through the air.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
Ward has not turned the ball over.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
I got to look at the fumbles, but he's only
thrown one pick so far, pick six. Is there a
look ahead factor? I know you're owing three, but you
know what I'm saying, You got the Titans coming in.
They're supposed to hand you a win. I'm gonna to
put that in air quotes. What about the attention paid
to this or is that not even a factor? They
are just the Texans are hungry for blood and they're
(20:07):
going to get this one no matter what it takes.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
On Sunday afternoon, well you better prepare as though you're
getting ready to face what, in my opinion, is the
best team in the NFL right now, at the Philadelphia Eagles.
You have to prepare that way. Don't prepare thinking the
other way, because that's when you'll slip up and get beaten.
They did it here in our building last year at
(20:30):
NRG Stadium, and they did it with a quarterback that
I think is a lesser talented guy than the guy
they have right now. I think Camore's better than Will Levice,
and so he can make some plays. He can cause
you some frustration by pulling the ball down, making plays
with his legs. Now, I've seen him throw it from
every arm angle imaginable, So he's the ball is going
(20:50):
to come out he takes He's taken care of it
to a degree a little bit better than I thought
at this point in the season. So overlook Tennessee because
guess what, they may be thinking the same thing about you.
Both teams are oh and three. It's hard to win
in this league, really really hard to win in this league.
(21:13):
So you can't over or over underestimate anybody when it
comes to who you think you should be on that schedule.
The schedule is just what it is. It's just a
slate of games, and that's why coaches will tell you
you take each and every one of them one by one.
You don't know how health is going to factor in,
especially with Steingley and his hip that can linger for
(21:36):
a while, and so that's a piece that you don't
have going against a team that wants to beat you
as badly as you want to beat them. So take
them serious. Prepare as though. You're getting ready to face Philadelphia,
and I think will be all right, especially being at home.
But it's not a game that you can just mail
it in and think they're O and three. Well, this
is our our get well game.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Okay, Yesterday it was kind of weird in the NFL
on a number of levels. You tell me, you guys,
both tell me the weirdest result. I'm gonna read off
a few of them. You tell me the weirdest result yesterday.
Carolina shutting out Atlanta thirty to nothing.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
That's really weird.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Cleveland beating Green Bay thirteen to ten. The Minnesota Vikings
winning is one thing, but beating the Bengals forty eight
to ten.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
That's not as weird as the others.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
The ending to the Jets Tampa Bay game weird where.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
They're gonna bucks are gonna kick a field to go
up twenty nine to.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Twenty gets block, goes all the way back, gives the
Jets a twenty seven to twenty six lead, Tampa Bay
goes back down, kicks the game winning field goal, wins
twenty nine to twenty seven. Of those, what's the weirdest
ending game result from what is just an incredible Sunday
again in the NFL dre you go first?
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Yeah, for me, it would be Carolina because you know,
there's the prime example of what we just talked about
a couple of seconds ago. And you can't take a
team lightly who would have thought that they could score
thirty They probably like to save some of that for
next week because it's just not going to happen again.
But for that day, they were able. They had everything
(23:17):
dialed up, and it happened right shutting out the Atlanta Falcons,
who had explosive skill position players at their disposal. That's
the shocker for me.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Yeah, and you know what, Carolina showed signs of life
against Arizona last week.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Yeah, and at the end they made that come back.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Yeah, you gotta be this is a good cautionary tale
for the Texans playing the Titans this week, not that
they showed signs of life. I haven't completely analyzed their
game yet, but anybody can bounce up at any time
in this league.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
And you know who else is happy this morning?
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Special teams coaches agents, because look at all the games
that turn on special teams plays, blocks, things like that
weird kickoff returns, their value, coordinator's value, good ones gonna
go up here with this new era of the NFL
where we want this thing to be really important, this
third phase of the game to be even more important
(24:08):
than it ever was. When field goal kickers are banging
sixty yarders, but also blocks are getting returned for tds.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
And weird things happening.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
I think that's a highly notable thing for Frank Ross's brethren,
his colleagues, and the special teams coordinator Business Drey College
football quickly.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
If I had to ask you one question, it's gonna
be this.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I don't know how the long Horns are ranked ahead
of Texas Tech at this point.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
I mean, Texas Tech is four and oh and they
have the best.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
Team money can buy, right, Yeah, Indiana's foreign Oh my god, what.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Tech Texas Tech has actually played some people, right.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
I mean, Texas played Ohio State but they lost.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Yeah, and they hadn't played anybody since.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
So what in Indiana forn Oh it's not just it's
not just Indiana four and oh, it's how they're four
and oh with that dominant victory on Saturday. Anyway, general
thoughts here and what I said or anything else you
want to address in college football.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Well, uh, you know, things are starting to thin itself
out up, upsets of starting to happen, you know, you
just that's why you just kind of let things just
play their way through until about late October early November.
That's when you find out who's who. That's when teams
are starting to really identify who they are. But you know,
(25:23):
I actually really like Texas Tech and the job that
they've done. Can't pass up or you know, slide by
what the coops have done as well, and proud of
what they've done. There there one more win this weekend,
and there there last year's win total. So with with
the rest of the schedule to play out, and I
(25:44):
think they have Texas Tech after after Oregon State, but
it is uh, you know, I'm very proud of the
job that Willie Fritz has done on campus. So it
just let it play out. Texas has got, you know,
a couple of opponents that they could shake things up
for them going forward, but much better competition down the
road for the Longhorns.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
Oh yeah, there's no question about that. It's gonna be man.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
I'm telling you this college football season, especially this week
coming up, if you're a college football fan. Last week,
I still thought it was pretty good. More on the road,
it's you know, sometimes it's hard to kind of get
a chance to see everything. We ended up going to
David Busters to watch a bunch of games. Canes and Gators.
Of course, Marks A. Kane and there are a lot
of Gators fans in Jacksonville. They were not at the
(26:28):
David Busters. There's a lot more Canes fans if you will.
You had Texas Tech with a big win on Saturday.
It was a massive win in Utah, more than three touchdowns,
really put them on, put it on. I think a
good Utah team, not a great Utah team, but a
good Utah team. But you talk about games this weekend,
Floor State Virginia on Friday is gonna be unbelievable. I
(26:51):
think Drey's calling that game TCU Arizona State also on
Friday night on Fox is tremendous. You've got ranked teams
usc Illinois, even though Illinois got just absolute skull drug
the other night got Ohio State at Washington. I think
Washington's a lot better than people think. Ef they're not ranked,
LSU all miss Auburn taking on a and m Tennessee
(27:15):
taking on Missispi State, Missippi State's four and oh Oregon
Penn State's game. Everybody have their eyes on Alabama at Georgia.
It is a tremendous weekend in college football. And Dre
will be calling at Florida State Virginia game on Friday night,
which is taking place in Charlotsville. That's gonna be a
fun one. I think Florida State's much better, but they
gotta prove it and they will try and do that
(27:36):
on Friday on the road at the Wahoos. And that
game is always kind of an interesting one, kind of
a fun one as I look back. Virginia broke a
long acc streak back in nineteen ninety five and the
man who made a big play at the goal line won,
Anthony Poindexter. I bring that name up because well we
(28:00):
know some of his family members here with the Texans,
so that's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
All right.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Coming up next, the General John McLain will join us
right here in Texas All Access telling everybody, welcome back
to Monday this of Texans All Access from the Texans
Radio studio. John Harris here for Plano SOUTHLN reporter for
your Houston Texans. And before we get to the General,
John McClain, the news that I had reiterated or given
(28:26):
you the first segment of reiterate here Jimmy Ward his
case no build in Montgomery County. He transitions from the
Commissioner's exempt list to reserve p up. Does that mean
he could play this weekend?
Speaker 5 (28:40):
No?
Speaker 2 (28:41):
When does that mean he can play? He can play
after week four? But will he wear is he medically?
Speaker 1 (28:49):
We don't know. They have really kind of no idea.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Everything has been sort of the legal situation, so it
was what that's got to get figured it out first
before anything can happen about the reserve pup list and
injury and all that kind of stuff. So we'll find
out more throughout the week. But Jimmy Ward not going
to be indicted on charges in Montgomery County. Okay, let's
(29:16):
get to the General, John McClain. It's pretty funny. Get
a chance to catch up with the General. He's always
got a good funny nugget for us, and we start
off with it right here.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
General, how was your weekend anyway? What are your thoughts
about those?
Speaker 5 (29:31):
How about those Houston Cougars and Rice hous or yes?
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Okay, able to tell you anything.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
You guys don't know? Are the listeners don't know? Couple
of stats interesting. Texans the first team in twenty years
to start zero and three while allowing fifty five or
fewer points. And they're the lowest scoring team in the league,
even fewer points than the team like Tennessee, which is
(30:02):
clearly the worst team. And their coach, Brian Callahan, he's
made so many mistakes of clock management, of game management.
It's not like they're playing close games. I'm I'm guessing
that if the Texans win as they should, there's good
chance Brian Callahan is going to be fired and replaced
(30:24):
by Mike McCoy the final a former NFL head coach.
And if you're Texans fan, what's so frustrating is you
go back to the first game fourteen and nine loss
at the Rams Dary goomblewilely fumbles at the seventeen doesn't
mean they would have won the game, but it was
their only chance in the red zone. They're the only
(30:47):
team in the NFL that doesn't have a red zone
touchdown this year. And then, of course the next week
you go ahead nineteen fourteen with two ten left and
Baker Mayfield does the second three consecutive victories. He pulls
out in the last minute. That's the first in NFL history.
(31:07):
So you lose by one and this one, of course,
what I don't understand. They had a time out left.
It's third and as you guys said, less than a
yard twenty seven seconds and they go deep. And the
big thing, why did they not give ariantae Ursery help
(31:28):
with josh heines Allen who had been killing him all day.
To me, I don't understand that. Can't wait to see
what Nick Kayley says about it on Thursday. But the
last thing you do is not give help to one
of the best pass rush for one of the best
passers rushers in the league who's having an outstanding game
(31:50):
against a rookie left tackle. And of course he had
Stroud's arm interception, and no matter how hard you willed
it to be a dropped pass, it wasn't. So that's
got to drive the coach is crazy. He's got to
drive the players crazy, just like it does fans and media.
But they won those close games last year, and to me,
(32:14):
the most worrisome thing is, of course the past protection,
but some of the decisions those guys are making, and
then the fact you can tell it's bothering CJ. Strout.
You know, there's little resemblance to the resemblance to this
Troud we're saying now is this stride we saw as
(32:35):
a rookies. And I will never ever be able to
understand how in twenty twenty three you had Chris Strausser
was the line coach and he was starting guys like
George Fant and Michael Dieter, Evan Austin, deculous against the Steelers,
(32:57):
Tendrick Green. They had all these backup linemen having to
start because of the injuries, and yet Stroud was not
getting pumbled. So I'm guessing is something that the defensive
coordinators found out when they watched the Texans over and
over and over during that offseason. And they came back,
(33:17):
and the Texans have not been able to stop it
and adjust. And one of the reasons I don't think
teams respect their running game. And this game was close
enough where you could have run the ball more because
I think they average like four point three yards of
Carrie and so. But the Titans are terrible. They're under
(33:38):
a cloud of controversy. This is the game their owner,
Amy Adams Truck, wants to win the most. Texans are
favored by what six or seven? They should win this
game handily, but as we've seen so far, nothing comes
easy for these Texans generally.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
I ask you a question.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
I was on with one of the Jackson Jaguars porters
this week and she asked me, and I'll ask actually
both yea, Mark you Chiman on this as well.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
But how much do the Texans miss Joe Mixon? You think?
Speaker 5 (34:11):
I think they missed him a lot, because Joe not
only was a good player, if he had missed those
three and a half games because of those illegal hip
drop tackles, he'd have been somewhere around fourteen hundred yards.
He's a good receiver, he's very outgoing. You know, He's
one of those guys. That gets the players fired up,
(34:32):
and I think they miss him a lot. And I
you know, it looks like he's gone into the witness
protection program and if he ever comes back, can't wait
to see what he says about what's happened to him,
because it's one of the great secrets Adam Shefter can't
find out, Ian Rappaport can't find out. Maybe we need
(34:55):
to have Bablo Torri do an investigation. Bob Blot he
finds out what's happened to Joe Mixon, and everybody's tried,
but it's one of the greatest protective secrets I've ever seen.
Hopefully Joe be able to come back, but because it's
such a mystery, you don't have any idea if he would.
(35:17):
But I think there's no doubt if Joe Mixon were
here like he was last year, when he was healthy,
this offense would be a lot better.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
Yeah, I agree. I think that it's Mixon's production, that's
one thing. And I think Chubb is fine, and I think,
you know, I want to see more of Woody and
all that. I like that duo, but it's the fire
of Mixin as a person exactly that I think would
really help because mixin could. I'm not saying the line
needs to be lit up or maybe they need to
(35:47):
be arranged differently or whatever. But if anybody needs lighting
up on offense, he's the guy to do it.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
He'll light you up.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
You know, anybody needs a little push mentally, psychologically, whatever,
he's the guy to do it.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
And I'm not so sure.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
You know, it shouldn't have to be Cjfcj's not really
that guy. The quarterback can be more of a all right,
I'm gonna be the great technician back here, make plays,
and you guys got to, you know, police yourselves if
you will. So I think they do miss them an
awful lot. General, are the Colts for real? At three
and oh? Daniel Jones three tds, no pick, seventy one
(36:22):
percent completion, Jonathan Taylor running the daylights out of the ball.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (36:28):
They've got everything you want in a winning team? And
uh boy, after I'm through with you, guys, I'm doing
a show in Nashville, one of two today and three
in the next two days. And that thing about uh,
I forget which receiver was afterwards said they didn't have
anything before the game. You can tell they didn't have
(36:50):
any spark in The Colts said we're gonna We're gonna
win this game, and then two Calahan's own players said
they came out flat and his fans were booing. They
left early, and so I think the Colts are definitely
for real. Daniel Jones has been great in shapstaking people
(37:11):
wanted him fired, Well, that just shows they shoved.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
Now.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
I don't know if they shoved Anthony Richardson down his throat,
but he is a much better coach with Daniel Jones
than he was with Anthony Richardson. And as long as
Jonathan Taylor is healthy to make that outfense go, he's
going to be a huge benefit to Jones. That's just
like if Joe Mixon were here, Joe Mixon would be
(37:37):
a huge benefit to C. J. Stroud. But until and
you know, the Titans see this, you got to get
ariyante Ursery some help with a tight end at best
and a running back at worse, because you know he
had to have lost his confidence yesterday on that last
one where pines Allen just bi, I just will never
(38:02):
understand why they put Ursery in that situation and he disrupted.
Really he won the game. There was a good interception,
but hitting Stroud's arm had basically won the game. And
so yes, I think right now they've got a three
game lead on the Texans, and the way they're going,
they're just a game ahead of the Jaguars. But based
(38:24):
on what I've seen, they're clearly better than the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
General you mentioned Nashville the Titans level of one to ten,
ten being like it's on fire, zero being it's cooled off.
How bad is the situation for Brian Callahan and Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (38:45):
They couldn't get any worse. Everybody. I'm talking about everybody, fans, media,
I don't know about people in the organization. But when
you are clearly overmatched and you can't make up your
mind on a field goal at the end of the
first half, and you have at least one or two
(39:06):
timeouts in the delay game and you miss it, and
then the Coats come back and kick it, that's that's
that's just as they call it up their malpractice, coaching malpractice.
And it's happened to him after every game, and they
ask him after the game, they ask him on Monday,
and he doesn't really have any answers. So people figure
(39:28):
he'll get fired if you fire, and then you gotta
fire as dead. The offensive line coach, who has been
a great line coach, his last job was at Cleveland,
but they can't get their line together. Their defense is
better than their offense, and so I don't expect I
saw a stat last week all these coaches get fired
(39:49):
after four games, including Bill O'Brien here two thousand and
so one more loss. Especially the Texans. People figure, you know,
his head's gonna be able to you.
Speaker 3 (40:01):
Know, for the Titans, they hire Callahan and he did
not call the plays in Cincinnati, so you hire him
to be the head coach, and he says, I'm gonna
call plays. So you're taking on head coach and play
caller for the first time. These two things. I can
understand it if you're a great leader, and maybe you're
worth the play caller. But you're a leader of men,
(40:21):
all right, So I'm going to hire a coordinator, he's
going to call the plays. I'll just be the leader
of men, and you know, break myself in as a
head coach that way, because you all got to start somewhere.
But to start, those two things, play caller and head coach. General,
I think it was a bad move by Titans management,
if you will to make the decision that way.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
It's not working out.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
Worked out well for the Vikings. Kevin o'gonalden call plays.
There are instances where guys don't call plays, and then
when they get a chance to be a head coach,
they call plays and it works out mainly because they
got more talent than the Titans, and they're ripped talent
because they've done such a bad job, uh draft thing
(41:00):
now this year so far, it's early, but they think
they may have done a better job drafting. But if
I'm Callahan, i would say, okay, before I got fired,
I'd say, all right, I'm going to turn and play
calling over to Mike McCoy. Remember Brian Callahan was hired
by Rand Cawthorn, former GM. It lasted one year. The
(41:22):
two new guys in charge, Chad Branker and Mike mcgonzi,
and they did not hire him, and that's why he's
not long for the head coaching world.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
Yeah, I tend to agree.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
General asked this question earlier of Andre I'll ask it
of you, and Mark was very fearful that the word
colts was going to be used. What's the best team
in the league right now?
Speaker 5 (41:51):
Well, I wouldn't say the Colts because I looked at
their schedule and the Broncos. They barely beat the Broncos
thanks to a penalty at the end that gave them
another chance to kick a field goal. Broncos are one
and two after a lot of people were picking them
to go to the Super Bowl. Tell you what the
way the Eagles win like that game yesterday, you know, Buffalo?
(42:17):
I would if I would say Buffalo Baltimore and the
Chargers in the AFC and the Eagles and the NFC.
But right now, the one that is winning the most
impressively the Chargers. I believe they played three division games.
Speaker 1 (42:35):
Yep, they beat all three.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
Now my hope with that is that the Chargers aren't real,
real good and maybe the division is just down this year.
I think everybody knows AFC West is a pretty strong division,
seemingly with all the talent that's there. But through three
weeks the NFL season, man, you can't bank on anything.
I guarantee nobody at the Texans own three. Certainly no
(42:57):
one had the Browns beating the Packers on an Andre
Schmidt fifty five yard field goal two weeks after he
had missed one to beat the Bengals. So yeah, I
don't think there are a lot of people that kind
of saw some of the things that are happening in
the NFL. But that's what makes this league so incredibly great. Now,
(43:19):
as happens, there's always injury news. Now, there's nothing that
we know of here in Houston. We do know that
Derek Stingley Junior was hurt with the obleak. Coach talked
about that in his press conference that he's.
Speaker 1 (43:32):
Day to day.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
But there are some teams dealing with some season ending
injuries that are gonna be tough, some West Coast teams.
In fact, both teams on the Texas schedule that they
will face and they will face them without these key players.
We'll discuss that and go around the NFL next right
here on Texans All Access. Yeah, sir, welcome back to
this Monday Nation of Texans All Access from the Texans
(43:54):
Radio studio. John Harris, your host, Glad to be with you.
One final segment here before we turn it over to
Monday Night football. You got Lions and Ravens. Good Monday
Night game should be a lot of points, that's all.
He always makes for a fun game. But we want
the Lions to win, right Always NFC against AFC, you
always want NFC. So I guess we're we are Aman
(44:17):
Ross saying Brown fans tonight. Probably a lot of you
out there have them on your fantasy team. So let's
go Lions.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Jered Guff Jered Guff, All right, let's go around the
NFL with some news, mainly injury news.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Texans will face the San Francisco forty nine ers after
a trip to Seattle, but it looks like we will
be facing the Niners without Nick Bosa, believed to have
suffered a torn ACL and Sundays win over the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
I saw a tweet.
Speaker 2 (44:52):
I was on a plane, I got a little bit
of Wi Fi and I was just going through Twitter
and somebody was describing Bosa the sidelines and they said,
you o. Somebody screened from the stands you okay, and
he just did thumbs down.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
I'm like, oh, boy, knew it was bad.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Apparently it is believed to be a season ending torn
ACL for one of the best defensive players in the league.
Nick Bosa done for the year for the forty nine Ers.
Now he is not the only one done for the
year that is a Texans opponent. Now, the Charges are
(45:30):
playing some good football, So losing Najie Harris that could
be tough. Maybe tough, but I think they're gonna be okay.
But he ripped his achilles. He is out for the season.
And I kind of lied to you a little bit.
(45:51):
There's a third team the Texans will face, and they
also lost their running back for the year, and that
was James Connor.
Speaker 1 (46:01):
Out for the year.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
That achilles, I mean, just watching Naji's Naji go down,
I mean you could just I've seen a number of
these achilles injuries. Oh my gosh. James Connor is an
ankle injury. He is also lost for the season. So
the Texans will play the Cardinals without James Connor, They'll
(46:25):
play the Niners without Nick Bosa, and they will play
the Chargers late in the year without Najee Harris.
Speaker 1 (46:32):
That's a tough one for Naji. He came back from.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
That fireworks incident injury that kept him out of a
lot of training camp. He got back, he was playing
Chargers were playing well, and then it was a play
action fat fake and he just went down the achilles
gave out, so tough news there for those three Ceedee.
Lamb will not miss the season, but he is going
(46:55):
to be out a couple of games dealing with a
high ankle sprand he suffer against the Chicago Bears. So
with all that injury news, adjust your finite fantasy lineups accordingly.
Hopefully you're doing well, but make sure you make those
adjustments because the injuries. Texas will not face the Cowboys
(47:16):
unfortunately this year. We'd like to get a piece of them,
but that won't happen for another couple of years. All Right,
that's gonna do it for the show. Appreciate Mark, Dre,
the general, all of you for listening. We'll see you
next time and as always, go Texans.
