Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, Texans, Welcome to the show. Always fun to have
you along for a Thursday night programmer, any night of
the week, as a matter of fact. And it's Mark
Vandermer and John Harris with you, of course because it's Thursday.
We are joined by the General, the Hall of Famer
John McClain, who steps in to the batter's box.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'm mixing sports metaphors.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
We've got less than a week to go until training camp,
and I know you're all fired up.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
John. How's it going tonight?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
I'm doing great This time next week we'll be talking
about training camp in the first day and everybody's pumped
and they should be. You know, the Texans, I believe
will run away with a division again. Quarterback issues in Indianapolis,
new coach, new system in Jacksonville, and the Titans look
(00:46):
like they're destined for last again with a rookie quarterback.
But the only thing I'm sure about is the Texans.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
General, I'm gonna ask Texans will run away with it.
That's pretty strong stuff, right there. We all know it's about,
but I hope you're right. Anyway, go ahead, John Harris.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Yeah, General. Before we get to the football, I've got
to ask this. Mark and I talk about overtime in
the NFL all the time and what they should do
and the best way to do it. I don't know
if you happened to see this the other night in
the Baseball All Star Game where they did the swing
off at the end of the game it was six
to nothing. Then I think it was the al came
(01:24):
back and made it six to six, and they didn't
go to extra innings.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
They went to this swing off where they picked three guys.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
They got three swings and that's how they determined the
winner of the All Star Game.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
So I don't know whether you saw it or not,
but just using.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
That as a guide, do you like Did you like
that swing off of the All Star Game with three
hitters coming up and just seeing how many bombs they
could hit and now it determined the winner?
Speaker 5 (01:47):
What'd you think of that?
Speaker 3 (01:48):
First of all, I've seen every All Star Game since
nineteen sixty when I've been in the country, and I
was amazed. Now, little of broadcasters knew that rule has
been in play since twenty twenty two. Everybody should have
known it. Players were surprised when they were picked, even
though the manager but they had to they had to
(02:11):
tell him on Monday who they were gonna use, and
I thought at first, why didn't they have Otani and Judge?
And then I find out the stars leave the stadium
shower and leave immediately. They're not around at the end,
most of them. So they had to designate people they
thought might not have played or would be playing late
(02:32):
and in the it was very smart to ask Kyle
Schwarber since hee the only Philly you talk about a
team that got screwed it was the Phillies. But they
had the right one, since he was coming off the bench,
if he wouldn't mind hanging around, and he said sure,
and then he did what he did best, hit three
(02:52):
home runs and ran it from the race. Who came
up who could have tied it with one home run
brought it. Left it up to Pete Alonzo, who's won
multiple home run Derbies, to decide it. But I was
surprised that your experts didn't know more about it, But
we certainly do now because it's still being discussed. We're
(03:15):
talking about it on Thursday night. The game was Tuesday night,
and I think it was a great thing because I
don't like extra innings in All Star games, especially when
you've used all your pictures, so it's better than just
calling it like Bud Ceiling did that one year, And
so after it was over and I thought about it,
(03:36):
and I heard all the talk about it the next day.
I liked it.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
I forgot about the Bud Ceiling moment. The All Star
Game that was excellent, and by excellent, I mean not
so much. I thought that Henry Aaron celebration was amazing.
We heard Milo Hamilton's call during that, and that was
a really well done in stadium thing.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
That looked good on television as well.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
But general just to review here, so the listeners are
reminded that this year in the NFL regular season overtime,
both teams are assured a possession no matter what happens
with that first possession.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Are you down with that? You okay with that?
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Are we settled now with overtime or do you want
to see more tweaks to the NFL system of settling
ties after regulation.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Absolutely every team that's in overtime should get a chance
to get the ball no matter what happens. A stunned
that it's taking them so long to figure that out.
I don't like overtime being short. I like it to
be another quarter because sometimes you get the ball one time,
but this is the best they've had it. Guaranteeing each
(04:39):
team will get it and that the coin toss is
not cannot determine. Like if Tom Brady is a quarterback, boom,
it's over. So yes, I like it.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
General when the Texans are on a buy or they're
away and you know, travel to the game. How do
you consume the NFL on a Sunday? Are you a
Red Zone guy or you know watching every game on
Sunday ticket how do you consume the game on Sunday
on Sundays?
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I know, for me it's Red Zone.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
The reason I bring this up is that Scott Hansen,
who I think is fantastic on red Zone, was almost
not brought back as the Red Zone hosts. That would
have been a huge loss. But how do you consume
the game on Sundays? When you're watching on TV?
Speaker 3 (05:22):
I like to focus on one game. Usually it's an
AFC South game to see how the opponents are doing
and or if there's a big game, you know, if
the Cowboys are losing, I'll watch it. But as far
as the Red Zone, I think Hanson does a great
job in the NFL, which is cutting back a lot
(05:43):
because we know all the owners are going broke, so
they're cutting back on the NFL network, which is just preposterous.
And he almost got asked, and I'm glad he's back.
But when I have a bunch of games up, I
can't focus on one. You're looking here, looking there, which
kind of reminds me of being at Wimbledon, and so
(06:03):
I like to focus on one and then I'll switch
the channel to another one. But I'm a one game guy.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
I'm curious about Sunday ticket, but I won't get it
because I really don't need it. Maybe twice a year
or three times a year, i'd be using that. But
I'm a red zone guy all the way. Just shoot
red zone into my veins. And I'm very happy with
the situation in general. Yesterday, I don't want to recap
the whole thing, but we were talking about the six
camera system that's going to be used to spot the
(06:37):
ball if there's a review in a spot situation, and
they're adding additional cameras to get you better replays for
the officials that we'll all get to see if they
do go under the hood for a review, so I'm
counting something like eighteen extra cameras on the field your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Going under the hood doesn't mean Squat refreez. He had
nothing to do with it. It's made in New York.
I don't even know why they look under the hood
other than make it look good. And I agree with
Bill Belichick, who had tried for years to say every
play is reviewable, but you don't change the challenges, so
(07:18):
it's not going to make the game longer. And I
just don't understand why they don't do that, because we've
seen so many mistakes made. Oh, well, we'll make that
reviewable in March. Why not make them all like I
think it's because it was Belichick and the league don't
like him and they wouldn't do it. He probably should
have gotten some popular coach organization to recommend it. But
(07:40):
I just don't understand people go, oh my god, the
game would be so long, or it wouldn't It wouldn't
be any longer at all. What do y'all think about that?
Shouldn't every shouldn't every play be reviewable if the coach
wants it reviewed?
Speaker 1 (07:55):
The question is whether every call is reviewable? Or I
feel like there was holding on that play, call it.
I'm going to throw the flag. I want to see
if there was holding on that.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Play the flag you've used your challenge, Why you won't
see that because they'll save the challenge. I think they'd
save the challenge. But if they want to throw it
on a hold on the first stage of the game,
let them throw it.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
I feel like in the NBA, and I know this
is not true, almost everything is reviewable, but sometimes I
feel like those guys go to the sideline way too
much to look at the monitor, and it does bog
down the game. But I like your idea of like, hey,
you've got challenges, you can use them or not use them.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
And already every turnover.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Is reviewed, every scoring player is reviewed, so you don't
have to burn your challenges for those unless you think
it was a fumble and they didn't rule it a fumble.
Now you're screwed into having to use a challenge to
review it.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So yeah, I'm okay with it.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Look the PI, I thought, look, let's keep this another
year or two, try to refine this system, because we
are just a play away from having another Ram Saint
situation like they had the NFC Championship game a few
years back. We are a play away from that without
any recourse to change that.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Well, we don't want to see that again because as
the most gregious era I can remember. And but it
would all be at the point if they told them,
you know, do that anytime you want. If you saw
play like that in the first quarter, throw your challenge flag.
But anyway, they're very slows, and I guess there should be.
(09:28):
They don't want to overreact. But man, every year we
see blown calls that, oh, well, that's not reviewable.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
General you mentioned his name, and I'm curious your thoughts
because I got asked this the other day and I
had it made me think for a little bit, like, yeah, boy,
it's so funny because there's been so much off the
field stuff with Bill Belichick. What happens when North Carolina
gets on the field. I know we don't talk a
ton of college football in North Carolina's recruiting class, all
(09:57):
that we don't pay attention to, But just overall, thirty
thousand foot view, how do you think Bill Belichick handles
college football in twenty twenty five in North Carolina.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
I'm in the minority because since he went to North Carolina.
I thought it would end poorly. I don't think like
some do always using this to come back to the NFL.
I just don't see any owners hiring him. I don't
think I just and is off the field controversy wouldn't
(10:26):
help him. I think he'll be there maybe a year
or two. I remember Mac Brown saying he's gonna have
to do things he's never thought about doing, which is
going to alumni groups with the big donors and they're
telling you what plays to call, and you ought to
bench this guy and that one. And people just don't
see Belichick smiling, shaking ends and saying, you're right now,
(10:49):
he can do all that. And maybe he will.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
But I.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Think they're I think that they'll I'm not going to
say mere they might win eight or nine games, but
I certainly don't think there'll be a factor in the
playoff race.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Let me ask you about some things regarding Camp that
might be a tad under the radar or under disgust
or whatever. But let's start here because I get asked
these questions, so I want to get your thoughts. Nick Chubb,
we did make a huge deal out of this, but
he's a big name, and I know he's coming off injury,
but what are your expectations for a player like Nick
Chubb coming into training camp and beyond for.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Him being the number two back to Joe Mixon. We've
seen pictures or videos of both of those guys working out,
mixing d the hank. I guess he had surgery on
his ankle. We didn't see him an all season. Has
showed him about a month ago just working out like crazy.
Saw Nick Chubb working out like crazy. You know, both
(11:50):
of them are in the twilights. Their career is twenty
nine years old. Both of them have had great success.
Mixon has been a touchdown machine, not just his last
year with the Bengals, but his first year with the Texans.
If he hadn't been sidelined by two illegal tackles, no
telling him any touchdowns, he would have scored. But Chub
(12:11):
usually it's the second year back, and Chub came back
last year and they said, you know, he was obviously
not the same back, and then he had the broken
ankle or foot, I can't remember what it was, but
he was one hundred percent. And I was told by
people with the Browns when the Texans got him. He
was one hundred percent and the work ethic, both those
(12:34):
guys work ethics. And I saw I think the new
center Andrews was on with you guys and he talked
to how much they're gonna run run round the ball,
and so that's good. That'll take a lot of pressure
off Stroud and the two. And I know this, Cleveland
will be keeping a close eye on Chubb because he
(12:57):
is one of the most popular players and have franchise's history,
and I can't wait to see him when he gets
on the field against the Rams.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
General, as you're talking about the running backs, the question
popped in my head. Nick he Sario on twenty twenty
one drafted Brevin Jordan. In twenty twenty two, he drafted
Damian Pierce for different reasons, potentially, which one do you
think has the tougher road to make the fifty three.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Man roster Pierce, because he's got better guys in front
of him, and he's hurt all the time, and we
didn't see him in the offseason, and you know, you
say make or break. You know they drafted what he
marks for a reason, and I don't think they drafted
him put him on the practice squad because he'd have
to clear waivers and somebody would get him. So that's
three backs that are going to be on the team
(13:45):
if they keep four because of Dara Guba Wallly's versatility
and special teams play, and although Piers can return kickoffs,
I think I'll be surprised, barring injury, if Damian Piers
is on the Ross when they go to LA and
hopefully he'll show something in preseason. Maybe Cassio can get
(14:06):
a seventh round pick for him, maybe a six. I
think Cassario will be getting like six for a couple
of defensive linemen because they had so much depth there
and talent, and I don't see him just outright cutting
a guy with talent who's going to be hard pressed
to make the team because the people in front of him,
(14:29):
and so it's going to be tough for Peers. You
feel terrible for him. You know, he's a great guy,
he's a great team guy. Everybody loves him. Had that
great rookie season under bad circumstances. And but if he
goes to a team that utilizes him in a system
like he should be good in the system that Kaylee's
going to run. But it just doesn't look like there's
(14:51):
room at the end.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
I'm with you on the room situation. It looks really crowded.
You're right, they drafted what he marks. I just have
this feeling about Pierce. I've been watching the UH and
I saw it a couple of times in a couple
of different ways. The Texans highlight TV show from last
year called Legends in the Making made by NFL Films,
and we aired at Sunday on ABC thirteen. It's gonna
(15:14):
re air Saturday night, eleven pm, ABC thirteen.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
And when you look at Pierce's big plays.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
My goodness, New England, Tennessee that big game he had,
you think there's a lot there. And if I'm Nick Caley,
I'm thinking I got to find a way to use
this guy. And sometimes injuries work this out. But everybody healthy,
I'm with you. If Chubb is fully healthy, it's Nick
Chubb my gosh, and Joe Mixon, my gosh, these are
real bel cows in this league. This is for both
of you. True or false. If everybody's healthy and there
(15:44):
are six receiver slots, then it's gonna be Nico Kirk,
Justin Watson and three guys who went to Iowa state
true or false.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Well, we know the top guys are gonna be. It's
gonna be Nico'collins of course, who I just saw list
that had him as the seventh best receiver in the NFL.
That was one of the ESPN guys Thursday morning when
I was watching, and Christian Kirk, Jaden Higgins, Jalen Knowles four,
(16:19):
and then it is the guys will have to play
special teams, and Xavier Hutchinson is a really good special
teams guy. John Metchi this is make or break for
him and Watson averaged two years ago seventeen yards per
catch with the Chiefs, so they're gonna add some tough catches.
(16:42):
But I'm gonna guess that Metchi is gone, and I'm
gonna say Hutchinson's days because he plays special teams.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Okay, I Mark, I think that's the sixth and the
sixth that you mentioned were again Nico Kirk, Watson, and
three cyclones. I think if there's a wild card to
watch in this it's Jared Wayne six' three six. FOUR
i know they've already got a number of six to four,
dudes But Jared wayne has made a significant impact on
(17:12):
his coaching, staff and that has got to.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Continue with a really good.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Training camp to put some pressure on the coaching staff to, say,
hey can we find a role For Jared wayne on special?
Teams and again this kind of goes back to The
Damian pierce thing. TOO i know you guys know, this
but don't think That Frank ross isn't gonna have an
impact or thoughts on who's gonna make this. Roster you tell, him,
(17:38):
Hey Damian pierce isn't gonna make this. Roster he's, like,
yeah but how good is he on? Returns and what
does he give us on? Returns remember That Tennessee titans
game The texans. Lost it started with A Damian pierce
seventy five yard kickoff return followed by A Cad stover
touchdown the very next play at seven to, nothing and
that was because Of Damian. Peers and he's become one
of the better returners in the league as a.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Result so that's a.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Consideration but Obviously damien has to do a bit. More
BUT i think the mark you've got the, SIX i,
think and that Puts John, Metsi Jared wayne squarely in
the crosshairs of if you guys have got to have
tremendous camps to overtake one of those GUYS i would
imagine justin Watchingon Xavier. Hutchinson but, again we know that injuries.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
Can solve the. Story So i'm glad we're talking.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
About receivers BECAUSE i saw this literally right before we
got on a, show AND i think it was ON.
ESPN i think it was on ESPN's nfl, account and
they had on one side a picture Of Jamar chase
and on the other side they had a picture Of Andre,
johnson and they, said in their, primes who you, take
(18:42):
And Jamar chase Or Andre? Johnson general you go.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
First Andre johnson's in The hall Of fame and he's
been in the league more than twice as much As.
Chase maybe Ultimately chase passes. Him and also pretty, Simple
Joe burrow was one of the top three quarterbacks in THE.
Nfl he plays With chase AND i don't have enough
time left on the show to go over the quarterbacks
(19:09):
That andrey passes. From So Andre, johnson without a, doubt
If andre, played if he played With Joe, burrow think
of what he'd be a Conference.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
WOW i, go, Well, johnny you KNOW i THINK i
on the.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Show If Andre johnson was drafted by The, patriots he'd
Be Jerry. Rice he'd be the greatest receiver who ever
played the game. Period it would be end of. Story
he'd be known that. Way he's that. Good you put
him with a, court you put him with the greatest
quarterback of all time, Already Jerry. Rice And i'm not
taking anything away From Jerry, rice but you have the
great benefit of playing With Joe montana after he had
(19:46):
already won Two Super, Bowls so we're talking maybe a
top three quarterback at the. Outside and then you Get Steve,
young Who's hall Of.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Famer so he did pretty well for.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Himself Andre johnson did not play with Any hall Of
fame quarter as we all.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Know how many, receivers excuse, me how many receivers don't
play with great. Quarterbacks like every time THAT i was
Presenting andre for The hall Of, fame and he's going
up Against Reggie, Wayne Peyton, Manning he's going up Against Tory,
Hall Kurt, warner and There's, andre which is one Reason
(20:21):
andre got in The hall Of fame before. Them it's
just like every Great hall Of fame coach generally has
a great quarterback who helped him get there other Than Joe.
Gibbs and so those are things to. Consider And, joe
If andre played With brady Or burrow Or Lamar jackson
Or Josh allen or any of those, guys think how
(20:43):
much better as stats would. Be and people, go, well
they may have other good. Receivers, well we're not talking about.
That they're not. Stupid if you Had, andre you're gonna
throw in the. Ball it still blows me away when
you think about the greatest college teams in, history And
andre played on one of, them the two tenty NINETEEN Lsu,
(21:03):
tigers With burrows throwing To jefferson And. Chase my, god
that's got to be the best threesome in college football.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
History, yeah that's.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Incredible that's incredible stuff right, there especially the Way burrows
turned out to be such a great. Pro and then
you look At Andre johnson catching passes From Ken, dorsey
who was not A Heisman trophy winner in.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
College is Not Joe.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Burrow real solid college, quarterback but certainly Not Joe.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
BURROW i could go on and.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
On megatron Had Matthew stafford once he got there in,
nine And, MEGATRON i think he's not.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
Overrated he's.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Fantastic BUT i always thought it makes me bitter sports
fan bitter WHEN i hear all this praise For megatron
And andre kind of lets he gets left out of
those conversations very. Often but he's in The hall Of,
fame so we have to look at it that. WAY i,
mean that's that's damn. Good he's in The hall Of. Fame,
fantastic good. Stuff, well all THE nfl shows are going
(22:02):
through their stuff right now and the podcast and. EVERYTHING
a couple of items from RECENT nfl MEDIA. Cj Gardner
johnson appearing on a podcast And Shawn seth that played numerous.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Cuts what's? It the?
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Pivot is that what he was? On he was on
one of THESE i can't remember which, one AND i,
Apologize but, podcast what kind of impact do you THINK.
Cj Gardner johnson has on This Houston texans.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
TEAM i think he's going to be very controversial because
he's always. Controversial he said what he, says what he,
Thinks so every day to media is going to go
to him about a variety of. Topics when a guy
bounces around like he has and yet, produces there's got
to be issues that teams have to have six interceptions
(22:47):
for A Super bowl. Champion and they trade him For
Kenyon green and they say it's because of. Money you,
Know i'd, bewarey but he's going to have a chance
to come. Here he said all the right things about
helping this team learn what it's like to win big,
games and hopefully he can do. That you, Know Jimmy.
Ward they've got three safeties right, now AND i don't Count.
(23:10):
PETRIE i count him as like a nickel, corner and
there got so much depth at that position and. Injuries you,
Know ward gets hurt every. Year plus he's got the
off the field. Issue BUT i feel so good about
their secondary and there's not, many if any set of
corners better than what they got And Derek Stingley junior
(23:33):
And Kamari. Laster but it's gonna be fun Watching johnson
because he is.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Unfiltered he is certainly, unfiltered no.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Doubt general ESPN's nfl executives did their cornerback.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
RANKINGS i don't know what's more.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
Surprising i'll ask You Derek Stingley junior at number two
Behind Patrick's tartan or the fact That Kamari lasser did
not get one vote amongst the.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Executives, YEAH i was. Surprised that's a bigger. Surprise Or dan's,
great he's defensive player of The. Year i've only seen
that happen two times with, cornerbacks so there's no shame
in being number. Two but LAST i thought sure would
get votes BECAUSE i think there's supposed to be fifty
(24:22):
people that judged. It BUT i guess they'll have plenty
of chances to show them who's the best duo this,
year because based on our Way stanley played last year
is going to give you a lot of balls thrown his.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Way, well getting away from listening back into schedule, items
The texans are headed To seattle this year to play
A monday night, game and they got screwed by the
league because they have to play a ten eastern. Game
so this is Ninth, central ten o'clock. Eastern why is
the league kicking off at ten eastern. This we're not THE,
nba we're not THE. Nhl it's ten. Eastern we don't
(24:59):
play a ten eastern in THE. Nfl don't do, it
but apparently we. Are and the game's gonna be ON Espn.
Plus but, Locally i'm PRESUMING abc. Thirteen i'll get that for,
you but certainly On Sports radio six' ten And The texans.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Radio network BUT general i questioned about that.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Particular game Is this houston's gonna Play the Raiders With
gino smith who Was in seattle and they won ten games.
Last year now They've Got sam darnold who Beat the
texans last year with the help Of his. Minnesota bandmates
But now donald Is. In seattle how Well is donald
gonna do In The pacific northwest with that? Coaching, staff
(25:35):
again they won ten games, last year but that Was.
With Gino do donald's wartz come Out in seattle or
does he keep the good? TIMES rolling i know it
didn't end well last year, for him but by and
large was a phenomenal Season.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
For Donald my koobi At gary son is his new,
offensive coordinator and he was great last year in. Regular season,
you know they, shocked everybody and they wouldn't have been.
AS good i don't THINK.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
If.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
J j mc they had blown out his knee and
he would have been the starting quarterback and they would
have struggled with. A ROOKIE but I. THINK donald i
don't gonna say he's gonna throw thirty something touchdown. Passes
Again because seattle wants to run. The Ball flint kobiac's like.
His dad he wants to run. The ball he wants
(26:19):
to have ballance and his head coach as a former,
defensive coordinator so it's. His baby AND so i don't
know that they're going to win. More games, You know
gino threw a lot, of interceptions but he had the
most yards he's. Ever HAD and i Don't think donald's
gonna win fourteen Games for seattle like he Did, for
MINNESOTA but i could see him reaching ten again and
(26:41):
maybe getting a. Wild Card birth.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
General von miller signs With The. Washington commanders is that
a team that's all in your Thoughts about vonn Going.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
To washington miller was suspended for four games by the league,
last year and he's got a lot. To prove, you
know he's thirty six. Years old he's going to be
a part, time player a, pass rusher and they're, talking,
about oh hopefully he can do for them what he Did.
FOR buffalo i was in his. First year, you know
(27:13):
he's not the same player he used. To be but
if he could give them five sacks coming off, the
edge then that would be productive. For him one of
the things About, dan quinn if you look at, their
roster they have a lot of. Seasoned Veterans and i'm
not talking about guys who Are thirty i'm talking about
guys who are like thirty five because they like the
(27:35):
leadership that they give in the locker room and on.
The field so that's a great place For von miller
to go and prove that he still got.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Something left better record, This year Commanders, Or, Texans johnny
i'm going to ask you that in the, next segment
so you Hold.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Back commanders had a better record. Last year commanders play
in a they made the. Championship game they play in a.
TOUGHER vision i Think the texans is gonna win eleven or,
twelve games assuming they don't blow games like they did
when They like detroit and So but i'm gonna Say
the commanders will because they did it last year And
(28:14):
the texans.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Did Not General The.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
Adam Schefter The adam schefter Reports That anthony richardson's shoulder
should be a okay for. Training camp do you think
it matters or do You Think daniel jones has already won.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
THAT competition i don't.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
Think he's won.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
A competition everybody thinks he Will Because anthony richardson has
been a huge bust in his first, two years partially because.
Of INJURIES but i saw this note this week and
thought it. Was fascinating, last season there were only two
guys who started regularly who had ratings of below eighty
(28:56):
at the end of, the season and both of them
played for the call they better run the ball a.
Whole Lot daniel jones is an, underrated runner and We
know richardson's a, great runner but he's just not an.
Accurate PASSER so i think most of us Believe That
daniel jones will start, opening day and he's on a one,
year deal so he's got a lot to. Play For
(29:17):
and richardson, does too because if he doesn't produce in his,
third season he can. Be Gone, chris MALLARD the gm could.
Be gone there's a new sheriff in Town, in indianapolis
And carly, er say maybe may not be as patient
as her day.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
Wear in, that headset doesn't like what. She's hearing you're out.
OF here i like that you here's.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
The, Headset, Okay general i'm gonna leave you with a
movie QUESTION and i have a theory On this superman.
IS out a lot of people like a lot of
people don't like, It OKAY and i had a feeling
that we Can't get superman Right Since, christopher reeve we
cannot get.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
IT right i don't even know if we got it right.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
Back then and it was funny because they Did the
superman movies before we Did the batman movies like a,
decade prior And the batman movies have been rebooted and
again and again. AND again i know we Had that
Batman versus superman, movie THING but i feel like there's
a Darkness.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
To batman He's The.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Dark, Knight literally superman's, not DARK and i think it's
just difficult to pull off with, audiences sometimes what is?
Your thought are We getting superman right?
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Or not with all.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
These, reboots no the, best character the BEST actor i
Thought Was henry cavill because he's a very muscular guy
and he didn't have to have patting to Look, like
superman which is a. Triangle body but the scripts have,
been terrible AND that's i didn't even Like The christopher.
(30:44):
REEVE ons i grew up Reading every superman COMIC and
i expected something to blow. Me away nothing's blown. Me
away too many Actors, playing superman and that's ONE thing.
I Thought christian beale by far is The. Best BATMAN
when i Think About, Michael, keaton oh, Skinny Ass michael Keaton,
(31:04):
playing batman you know that. Was Preposterous, george clooney give me.
A BREAK but I think bell has. Been Great christopher
nolan's a. Great director the best villain of all, the villains,
of course was The Late heath ledger Is, the Joker
but batman is Far. Surpassed Superman and i'll see This
(31:27):
when i'm not, fired UP but i feel obligated to.
Do It and i've seen the, mixed reviews but Give
me batman any day of.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
The, WEEK okay I saw superman. LAST weekend I was
it was. Highly enjoyable it was very. Very good crypto
To the dog plays a, great Role And james gunn
reported that rescues have gone up five hundred percent as
a result Of, watching SUPERMAN which i think is really.
Really cool it Was very enjoyable'm not gonna sit here
and tell you it was the, best ever but it was.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Highly enjoyable to go sit the theater for a. Couple,
hours uh And. Watch superman so go.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
See it put, you know put aside all the bias,
all that just go watch it and it's it's pretty
entertaining for a.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
COUPLE hours i will say that if we go To, the.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
Greenbrier we need to night to. DO something i think
going To see superman wouldn't be a.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Bad.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Thing, MARK okay i got a question. For y'all if
you could have Any of, superman's powers could, have one
what would? It be x?
Speaker 4 (32:23):
Ray?
Speaker 2 (32:24):
VISION baby, I. Knew, JOHN.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
Uh i mean your x ray vision is hard not
to but just his.
Speaker 4 (32:32):
SUPER strength i just would like to be able to
catch falling trees and houses and uh, you, know. UH
skyscrapers i would like to have to super Strength because
mark stow x, Ray Vision so i'll take super.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
STRENGTH flying i would.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
RATE it i would fly because you'd never have to
deal with, our airport which the construction is making it
one of the worst in, the world and to, get
there you wouldn't even. A plane give me the ability
to fly any day of.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
THE week i would BE afraid i was gonna fly
into a. Helicopter Blade But, i'm SUPERMAN so i can.
RESIST it i don't, know general thanks a lot for being.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
With us we. Appreciate, it yes thank you.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Very much, as always, coming up We've got, Who's better
we've got more likely, To happen we've got a slew
of Questions for johnny coming. Up next AND am i
gonna tie In the Texans with? Wrexham somehow YOU bet?
I Am It's texans radio back In The Hunday texans
radio studio and, full disclosure neither of us are officially
In The Hunday texans radio studio because it's being. Worked
(33:31):
on it'll be ready by mid next week when training camp.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Gets underway it doesn't matter. To you, you're listening you can.
Hear us. It's Great, Mark Vandermer john harris. With you Let's.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
Go johnny i've got, who's betters questions, more likely all sorts.
OF stuff i was gonna save, this ONE but i
kind of. Teased it so Let's. Go wrexham people know
or may, not know but It's the Welcome To. Wrexham
Show ryan Reynolds and. Rob mclann he bought a soccer
Team in wales that was going through hard Time in
(34:00):
league five. Or whatever they've jumped up and. Jumped up
now they're in the, second Division the Championship in england
and it's a.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
METEORIC rise, i mean this.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
Is unbelievable so more likely to Happen first wrexham Makes
The premier league Or the texans go to The, super
bowl Because The premier league is no easy pickings.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
From here now you're In.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
THE championship a lot of teams have a lot of
money and teams moving down To The premier league they.
GOT resources I know rexham has. Some resources they've got
great sponsorship opportunities with those two Guys. At cetara but
what do you? Think here more likely to Happen first
wrexham moves up To The premier league Or the texans
make The.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
SUPER bowl I think texas make The.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
Super BOWL and i say that Because what wrexham has done.
Is historic no club team has Ever done english Soccer
what wrexham, has done and that's to be promoted back
to back to. BACK years i think the Jump from
Championship To premier league is the hardest promotion.
Speaker 5 (35:05):
TO make i think that's the.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
Toughest one but when you look at they were Second
In league one last Year Behind. Birmingham City Now birmingham
city is owned.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
In Part By. Tom brady he's got a team.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Around him they're throwing all kinds of capital at getting
Back Into. Premier League when brady became a minority Owner For,
birmingham city they were just being Demoted. To Championship then
brady's there for, a year they got Demoted To league One.
With wrexham they dominated for the Most Part. League one
(35:39):
they're moving Up, with WREXHAM and i just have a
Feeling that wrexham is a couple. Of stets You Have,
birmingham CITY and I Think birmingham city's gonna struggle once
they get Into. The CHAMPIONSHIP so i think it's gonna
be a few more Years before wrexham. Gets there my
hope is that over the next three to five Years
the texans can.
Speaker 5 (35:54):
Make at least A.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
SUPER bowl I think rexham's gonna take a few years
to Get To premier. League level they put a lot
of money into, It already but to be able to
Go from Championship To, premier league well that's a That's a.
Speaker 5 (36:08):
Nottza ball.
Speaker 4 (36:09):
That's Tough the texans to get to The super bowl
have got to win two.
Speaker 5 (36:12):
More Games if we're, being HONEST and i think.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
They're more in line to do That than wrexham making
that Step To. Premier LEAGUE and i want To see
rexham get To The. Premier league to go back to
back to back to back to get To The, PREMIER
league i. MEAN incredible i just don't think they can do.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
It well the top four quarterbacks in the league are IN, the,
afc right so you have that to. THINK about, i
MEAN am i right? About that, that's right. That's right we,
all agree and not that there are bad ones IN,
the nfc but you're living in this era. Right, now
unfortunately All throughout texans history At the patriots dominating for,
two decades you Have the chiefs dominating for the last six.
(36:50):
Seven years although Of, THE eagles, i mean they're certainly
a premier team in. THIS league i know they've, bottomed
out get their version of bottoming out After the Peterson
Led super bowl victory and completely different cast of characters
for the most part doing what they're, doing lately Making
A super bowl and Losing A. Super bowl so you
got to Give the eagles tons of credit for being
(37:11):
a premier team in. This league BUT, the afc, come
on you Got, the chiefs you Got, the ravens you Get.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
The bills we all know. The story it's gonna. Be
tough hopefully they can.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Do, it okay more yards, this year more yards in
twenty twenty five on, the ground.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Will go hardcore ground. Game here you, Know.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
What i'm gonna add the receiving, yards too just to
make it fun. All, Purpose well i'm not gonna add
kickoff Return Because damian pierce is in.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
This question no kickoff return.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
Yards allowed that's kind of an unfair advantage here because
you can run it.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
From the goal line to the thirty and it's like.
Thirty yards, Thank You but Pierce? Or Chubb nick Chubb Or?
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Damian pierce more yards in twenty. Twenty five we don't
know the Situation, with chubb don't know, how healthy don't
know how effective coming off. The injury how is he?
GONNA be, i mean is he gonna?
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Be great could? Be great Could Be nick.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
Chubb Again pierce hey didn't participate in the, mini camp
but all indications are that he's gonna. Be OKAY and i,
STILL think i know we discussed it with. THE general
i still think there's a lot.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
Of there There With. Damian pierce but, we'll say what
do you think?
Speaker 1 (38:13):
Of?
Speaker 4 (38:13):
Them oh the FIRST thought i have is WHAT would
i want.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
To happen i'm not EVEN sure i KNOW what i want.
Speaker 4 (38:22):
To happen to, BE honest i do know That whoever Nick,
OR damien i think that person's gotta be able to
count for anywhere between six hundred to seven hundred total,
yards offense if it's all, purpose yards If, IT'S damien
i think it's gotta be that level and then some
because the kickoff, return yards and there're gonna be a
(38:43):
lot of kickoff return yards. This year there're gonna be
a lot. Of returns there's a part of me that
Thinks that damien will. Bounce back, you, know look we
YOU know I Trust. Nick Chubb When nick, chubb, says,
Yeah man i'm back TO where i was a couple of.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Years ago that.
Speaker 4 (38:59):
Makes me that makes. Me happy you, Know what i'm
gonna roll the dice To Go. NICK chubb I think
chubb's gonna. BOUNCE back i think he's gonna have that
seven hundred and eight hundred. YARD season i think he's
gonna be able to provide some Rest. FOR joe I
don't i Just The damian pierce one is just it's
just kicking ME because i just don't know the, Direction,
(39:21):
THERE mark i, really DON'T and i think part of
it has, to, be well let's Look, at chubb, you
KNOW and I guess i, Would ask i'm gonna throw
this back. At you so my Answer, is chubb who
do you think has a? Higher ceiling and maybe it's a,
Weird Question nick Chubb For, damian pierce who do you
think has a?
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Better ceiling a? Higher CEILING because i Feel like.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Chubb does but.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
After, THE injuries i don't know how much has been Lost.
With damien, you know he's had some injuries, As WELL
but i Still think damien's still, you know it's a
twenty twenty, two model but it still runs like a
twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (39:55):
Five midel if that makes sense referring it. To CARS
so i just don't know who's got a higher ceiling of.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Those two, YOU know i Thought maybe pierce last year
would come around to the point where they'd use him
in the postseason a little bit more and he would
start to be this not the number, one guy but
a guy you can really, rely on and maybe, you
know in a game in, the playoffs he goes for
one twenty, or something and it's just we're Just Riding
damian pierce tonight and he's gonna get us through TO The.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Afc championship game or something.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Like that AND maybe i fantasize too much about, these
Things but i'm. With you chubb has been to his.
Ceiling already he can get, back there but he's. Been
there pierce has only scraped at a couple Like he's
he's kind of gotten up into that air a, few
times but, not consistently and you feel like he's young
enough where he can, get there and he hasn't been
banged up that much where he could. GET there i
(40:47):
guess the question is What can chubb do in, Seventeen
games and, you know maybe it turns out, To, Be
hey chubb down the stretch of. The season, you know
maybe mixings, banged up they're Gonna.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Ride chubb he emerges.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
ONCE again i continue to throw In The john reagans.
TYPE thing i, don't know but as we discuss, all
this just Stay Healthy joe mixon and make the rest
of it gravy, for us because A Healthy joe mixon
is a very. GOOD thing i think A Healthy joe
mixon doesn't want to come out of. The game though
A healthy, joss agreed but.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
He has to under he has, to UNDERSTAND and i
think all these guys that got understand that you end
up being better at the, key, moments, like look we
don't need you carrying it twenty seven times Against the
rams and. The opener we need you to carry it
twenty seven times potentially in a divisional playoff Game At.
Kansas city that's when we, need it and we need
(41:37):
you to be one hundred percent or as close to
as you can be to. Do that so, you know
take take some of those games where you don't have
to take, twenty carries make it twelve with. Three receptions,
let chub, let Pay. Let pierce that's to me going
to be really. Really, key yeah win. The game but
more depth at running BACK position i think is going
(41:58):
to allow you to win games later in the season
where you're fresher and your guys.
Speaker 5 (42:03):
Are healthier, and look all.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
It takes we saw This.
Speaker 5 (42:06):
For joe all it takes.
Speaker 4 (42:08):
Is one, you know ankle tackle and hip drop tackle
and you could be out five. Six weeks so it
can be a freaky thing with, running backs and obviously
the more you, carry it the more opportunity is for something.
Like that so hopefully You Know, Nick Schubb damian pierce
insert running back we're not talking about now into this
mix because it is gonna be an interesting group and
(42:29):
maybe it's somebody outside the building that we don't. KNOW
about i got a feeling it is somebody out inside,
the building but.
Speaker 1 (42:35):
We'll see we're gonna have so much to discuss once
we see them on, the field because then you know
who's available.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Who's not at least in the.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
Early going it contributes to so much conversation and we'll
be sharing all of it with You starting wednesday at eight.
A M and sean and sethil be on the field at,
six am so that's gonna be cool. As well that
was a quick segment because we went along with The
General but i've got one more. For you got a
couple of more more likely, to happen who's better. Type
questions we'll wrap it up with. Those two you gotta
(43:02):
call your shot on a particular stat.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Actually on two of them Regarding Your.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Houston texans we'll do that next Here On Texans all
access back for a final lap here Tonight On, Texans
Radio mark Vandermere And, john harris all right doing Questions.
For johnny, all right how about? This one more picks
in twenty, Twenty Five Derek stingley junior or, anybody else?
Speaker 2 (43:27):
Anybody else now here's.
Speaker 1 (43:29):
The situation Last year stingley had, five interceptions tied for
the team Lead With. Calen bullock so you had two guys.
Getting Five remember petrie as a rookie. At five by,
the way lasted, Had three. Ward two nobody.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
Else with more. Than one petrie.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
Had one so you tell me More picks stingley or
anybody else in, the field call your shot.
Speaker 5 (43:53):
To me it's.
Speaker 4 (43:54):
THE field i think the field is, strong enough as.
YOU mentioned i think when you combine the fuel is.
Strong Enough with BULLOCK. And Cj gardner johnson being add.
To mix petrie getting his hand on. The, football uh
you know that was one of the things that happened
In the quarterbacks show The very remember that. First drive
petrie comes on a blitz and throws just jumps in,
(44:14):
the air gets his hand, on it And then jimmy
intercepted it and they were on the.
Speaker 5 (44:18):
Sidelines, going man that was a hell of a.
Speaker 4 (44:19):
Play man that guy made a hell of. A, Play
kamari kamari's gonna. Get tested you combine that with the
cast of characters that's in the other, the field and
the Fact that sting's reputation is maybe, not cemented but it.
IS growing i think teams are, gonna, say look whatever,
(44:39):
you do don't throw it twenty, four yep don't throw.
Over THERE so i think he's gonna see. Less targets
everybody else then, gets more and everybody else is. Pretty
GOOD so i think that means that somebody else is
gonna have a bang. Up yere and it doesn't Mean
that stings having a. Bad year it just means that
teams are gonna start. Avoiding him it's like you look
(45:01):
Up And darrell reevens had two or three interceptions in.
Speaker 5 (45:03):
The year, you're, like oh he's. Falling off it's, like, no,
no no nobody's thrown. At him nobody's thrown. AT him
I think still's gonna get to.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
That status look At the Miami the, miami game right
late in, the, game too has got to make. A
play he's got to make. A play he's gonna go
to his number, One Receiver. Tyreek hill i'm Going To
tyreek hill BECAUSE if i, go broke here. Imago broke
go to my best guy and he goes Broke because
stingley intercepts, the ball and.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
That's Incredible that's stingley right there on a number one
guy and he's able to put the brakes on the
whole thing with.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
An interception what? More for you call?
Speaker 1 (45:38):
Your shot we've done, this before but we're gonna do
it again because it's a. Good one who's the second
leading receiver on this team last Year Behind? Nico collins?
Last Year tank Dell And dalton schultz were. Right there
schultz had fifty, Three catches dell at. Fifty one what
do these guys have?
Speaker 2 (45:54):
In? Common?
Speaker 1 (45:55):
Injuries right What? About diggs he had forty seven. Catches
injuries he only played in eight games. Last year so
who's it. Gonna be who's your number two receiver in twenty?
Speaker 2 (46:05):
Twenty Five.
Speaker 5 (46:06):
Jayden higgins That's how I'm going Jayden.
Speaker 4 (46:10):
AND higgins, I feel and there's a part of me, that,
says well, you know. Injuries aside, you know if this guy,
has INJURIES and i would literally about, to, Say Well
christian kirk as long as he, stays healthy and, this
guy if he, Stays healthy. I'm rolling the Guy, said
Jayden and higgins as a rookie is gonna. Stay healthy knock,
On wood i'm knocking on anything around me because that
(46:30):
dude's gotta.
Speaker 5 (46:30):
Stay HEALTHY mark.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
I there was a practice inside whause it was, raining
Outside and jayden ran by somebody.
Speaker 5 (46:39):
A CORNER and i remember the, corner WAS but i.
Speaker 4 (46:42):
Was standing near enough to a couple of football ops
guys and a couple of strength, training guys and one
of them turned to me After watching higgins just run
by make the, catch touchdown like, Oh boy and somebody
turned to me, and said you know that corners are, fastest,
Guy right that's all that he had. To, Say HEY
and i got It because higgins beat him by yard
(47:03):
and a half, Two yards and it was like that
guy right there runs a whole lot faster.
Speaker 5 (47:08):
Than whatever it's forty. Time Is so i'm gonna Go With.
Speaker 4 (47:10):
Jaden higgins it may not, be RECEPTIONS but i definitely
think it's gonna, be YARDAGE and i think he's gonna
end up making a killing getting in the. END zone
i Talked to jayden today what a, great kid and
kid he towers. Over me i'm every bit of six'
two and he's a large individual and he can run
really fast and.
Speaker 1 (47:27):
Catch as well dad is a good start. As a
rookie we'll see. Where it goes that's it for. The
show tonight plenty. Of interviews tomorrow we'll set it all
up for you six to. O'clock as usual thanks so.
Much for listening area forty five. Coming up next have,
A Great. Night go texans
