Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hello Texans, Welcome to the show as we continue a
week long series of programs in celebration and I'm just kidding.
We're not going to over celebrate the victory over the Chiefs,
but we will talk about it some more because it's
only Tuesday. I mean, come on, We're not going to
completely turn the page yet. But the Cardinals are in
the crosshairs on Sunday at noon and RG Stadium Kids'
(00:23):
Day presented by Texas Children's and we'll talk all about that.
We have Nick Cassario on the show tomorrow where we
will do a full breakdown of John Carroll's prospects in
the Division three College Football Playoffs after their outstanding victory
over Powerhouse Mount Union.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Are you interested in that? No, you're not. You're interested
in the tech sins.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
But it is cool for the John Carroll guys who
are part of this football organization here, you're interested in
the tech sins. Coming off the victory of the Chiefs
and Johnny, they are getting a lot of love, a
lot of love from the national media, climbing in those
all important power rankings, which really means nothing. I mean,
they mean absolutely nothing. People debating about power rankings is
(01:05):
interesting to me because it's not like the college football
You debate about the AP pole, but you know, the
committee looks at the a people. There's no committee in
the NFL. It's did you make it or not? We
know what the tie breakers are. Let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, the committee, whether they got things right or wrong
or whatever, you still can debate that.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
There's been a lot of debate. I'm on tech SAgs
on Wednesday morning, so we'll see what they are upset about.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I know Billy Lucci was a little bit mad about
Ole Miss being six and A and M seven, And
it's interesting because we're.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Going to get into that later. By the way, Yeah,
I mean I was going pro football rankings.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Yeah, from that standpoint, there's always discussion about the college rankings.
But yeah, so I'm ready for that fight, that discussion.
But the the NFL rankings mean nothing, and yet a
lot of people look at them. They're good talking points.
It's kind of fun to look at serve for us. Yeah,
and I look at them. I don't make much of
(02:00):
them because I remember when we were sitting on three,
we're twenty eighth. There was one power ranking has twenty eighth. Well,
you know your own three, I mean your own three,
and now everybody's like, oh, rising, bullet it up, arrow,
whatever you want to use.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
The Houston Texans, I've seen a lot of top ten
sitting at ten nine in the Athletic.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I think Sean and Seth were going over the Athletic
and Prisco two had us at ninth, and they were
saying that Prisco didn't really write a lot about it.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
He doesn't.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I mean when they do, when they do the rankings,
they talk about Prisco, and Prisco is always just like
a one sentence.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
The defense played great, yeah, and.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Then that's it. It's like, okay, well your interurn could
have written at the.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Way average attention span of the average American these days, Yeah,
pretty much.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Good for him. Yeah, but I like looking at him.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
It's fun to see it's all syndication, especially this point
of the year where the narratives that people had early
in the year were changing.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Actually about a team that's north of us in our division,
Well we'll get to that.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, there's some things changing there, a lot changing there.
But it's just always funny to go back and look
at week six, Week seven, Week eight, Oh, this team
is hot, this team is the best team in the
NFL boom. You know two weeks ago, Rams are the
greatest team we've seen, and we don't know how long
they go to Carolina and get popped. So it's always
(03:26):
kind of funny with those with power rankings, but it's
fun people.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I love lists.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I love list I always have, always love to create them,
love to read them, and I always overreact to them.
And it's always good to hear Sean. It seth through
that I haven't listened to it yet, so I will
catch up on the Odyssey app.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
On the way home.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
I've got a good list for you to make right now.
It'll be easy. I mean I think it'll be easy.
AFC South power rankings. Never mind the records, the power rankings,
because Colton Texans have the same record now and you
beat them head to head. The Jaguars have a better
record and they're in first place right now. Sure you
(04:04):
beat them recently, he lost to them week.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Three, beating with your backup quarterback.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
You beat him with your backup quarterback who had a
dramatic come from behind performance that we will never forget.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
It's hard to call Davis a backup quarterback. But I
mean it's what he is by definition. But in twenty
nine to ten, lead our backup quarterback, let us back
and beat you thirty to twenty nine minus the six
at the end with Sheldon, beat you by one with
a backup quarterback. So we'll play you any time, anywhere.
Spot the ball, let's go. And I know, the thing is,
(04:36):
what I love about the Jags is that they think
the same way like spot the ball, will play you.
They're not scared, and I give them credit for that.
They've you know, with Liam Cohen, they've kind of taken
on a you know a little bit more. I don't
say tough guy makes it sound bad, but I think
they believe in their physicality a lot more, right, And
(04:56):
I think they're starting to believe in Trevor Lawrence a
little bit more. And look, he's still can be a
roller coaster ride, but when he's hot, well he's not
keep everybody in the game.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, you know, the Jags have a four game winning
streak going, right, and the losses that they have this year,
they've lost four times. They lost to the Bengals. Joe
Burrow played a bit of that game, got hurt. Browning
came in. He was throwing picks, but it was a
weird game. We talked about that heading into week three.
We thought the Jags, they are so clunky. They beat Carolina,
(05:27):
so what, Carolina's pretty good, and then they lose to
the Bengals, close game, but that was weird. So you're
gonna beat them. You lose to them seventeen to ten.
They also lost to Seattle, the Rams and the Texans
and the come from behind effort. They have not lost
to bad teams other than the Bengals in Week two,
which is a clunky, weird loss.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Ironically, to their losses are kind of backup quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
I was impressed with their bounce back game following giving
up the lead here and dismantling the Chargers thirty five
to six rushing, just like we edged one out thirty
five to six.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I mean, it's the perfect thing. We talk about this
all the time, and I hear this from fans. I
always find it interesting because I don't think this is
the way teams feel. But oh, they're gonna be mad
after giving up that lead. They're gonna be mad, apparently
like they were.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
They were.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
They were pissed, Yeah, and they showed it against the
Chargers and the Chargers get a big win last night
against the Eagles. I mean, look, neither offense looked worth
a darn. They kept giving the ball to one another.
The Chargers couldn't throw it. Herbert didn't look great, but
he ran it. Jalen's turning it over the whole time.
I mean it was bad that said Chargers are nine
(06:37):
to four. Yeah, and they got throttled, I mean throttled.
It was like, man, did the Chargers backups play this
entire game? And the starters were like was this a
preseason game? But it literally was that whole thing. The
Jaguars were mad about the way they finished against the
Texans and basically got the season turned back around by
(06:58):
just hammering hammer the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
So that was an impressive win.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Then they beat the Cardinals okay, whatever, that was close.
That was an overtime, right, and the Tennessee Titans okay,
And then the Colts and they ended Daniel Jones season.
They did the leg that was a ticking time bomb
finally exploded.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Uh, they were a contributing factor. I mean basically, Daniel
Jones stepped to throw a ball and his right achilles shattered,
so the left they had been trying to keep alive.
But you know the old adage of look, if one
leg is hurt, one arm is hurt, your favorite the
other one?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Right, Yeah, well then much pressure.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
I mean we don't know that for a fact, but
it feels like that's to deel like it. Yeah, So
all right, let's get to them because we have to
get to a bunch of stuff with the Texans. We're
gonna have Tommy Togi I on in this segment. But
big story today. Philip Rivers, forty four years old, played
for the Colts in twenty twenty last got to lead
(08:03):
him to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yea, Rivers is now.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
A cult again. Forty four years old. Wow, this is monumental.
I was on Fox TV today and they asked me
about it because he had not signed yet. I said,
is Dan Marino not available? Because forty four years old?
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Look?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Tom Brady called and said that seems young to me.
I just think that it's a lot to ask. Moving
around escaping a Seattle pass rush.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
If he's not gonna play this week? Is he? Is
he gonna play this week?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Mark?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Okay, you tell me when he should play at Seattle
Ouch Monday night at home against the Niners. Ouch, then
the following Sunday against Jacksonville.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
He's got to play. By then you think you're signing
him for a reason. You're not signing him to be
the backup Johnny.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Right, this he says everything you need to know about
Riley Leonard. And I don't know if I made this
point on the year yesterday, but I want to make
this point right now. The Colts knew about Daniel Jones'
leg that you know whatever, that this two day weeks ago, anytime, Yeah,
this could end. Riley Leonard is your backup quarterback. You
haven't seen him play in a game other than preseason,
but you kind of know. You have an inkling. Maybe
(09:20):
it didn't, but I think he needed more insurance than
Brett Rippin. Right, Yeah, So when the Texans had all
their quarterback problems in twenty eleven, and look, we've had
quarterback problems since then, but I'm talking about you have
a good run going on and Lioner oh no, he
played less than a half. Now it's TJ yats. What
did they do. They brought Jeff Garcia in, They brought
(09:42):
Jake de Lohman, They brought Kellen Clemens in that quarterback room.
I mean, can you imagine you had quarterback room with
injured players and active players? So you had shob Lionert Yates,
Jake de Loom, Jeff Garcia, and Kellen Clemens all in
one room for a time. I might be missing somebody.
(10:02):
That's amazing to me. But they were trying to find
any which way they could produce a human quarterback who
had at some point done something, who could still play
a little bit. And Delan was a good backup because
he played that final game against the Titans.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
That's right, and they almost won it. I know.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
And you could argue, and I love TJ. Yates, you
could argue playing the loan in the postseason might not
have been the worst idea ever. But yeah, it's come on,
he's a legend and he won the Bengals game. I
didn't get I know it didn't go well at Baltimore,
and there's no guarantee that the loan would have played
any better.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Mark when Jake Delan played in that game against the Texans, right,
how old do you think he was? He wasn't forty four,
that's my point. He was thirty six, thirty six in
that game. He went eighteen of twenty eight two and
eleven yards.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
At a tundy and he was thirty six and done,
yeah and done cooked.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
But Johnny, what about cook?
Speaker 1 (10:57):
And I'm sure the dude's a grandfather. He's a grandfather.
Was the first kid at like married?
Speaker 2 (11:06):
I know he's got like twenty kids. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
It's all right? So hey, how about Ryan Tannehill. I'm
sure they discussed this. I mean, if you're the Colts,
every name has come up. Yeah, and maybe Tannehill cannot
play football anymore. And when he was that last out
there wasn't exactly beautiful with rivers.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
They have a pleasant memory, right right, Shane Stikeen's got
pleasant memory. Shane Stykeen was this quarterback coach in San Diego.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Oh, so they have that relationship.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
They have that relationship. So their relationships across the board.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
But I mean, I.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Can't fathom. I I refuse to believe that Daniel Jones
goes for a medical checkup in Indianapolis and they find
out yep, fibula broken something and they just say, okay,
(11:57):
we'll just wait for it to break right yeah, right, No,
what was the plan here?
Speaker 4 (12:02):
What?
Speaker 2 (12:02):
There's no way that was in Riley's got us no way,
no way. Is that the plan?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
That cannot be the plan? Yeah, this can't. I don't
you know what the plan was? You know what, we
can always go out and get Philip Rivers. I mean,
I guess that was the plan.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Mark they're looking at they're looking Seattle square in a face.
Damn good pass rush. Forty nine ers don't have a
great pass rush, but they're playing pretty well. Jaguar's pass
rush pretty good.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Oh and oh, by the way, this little nugget that
we forgot to add Brad Smith. They're starting right tackle
concussion protocol. That's rough.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
And you got Philip Rivers going out there. Probably not
this week, but you never know.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Rivers numbers from the last time he played on the
season in twenty twenty good numbers, sixty eight percent completions,
twenty four t ds, eleven picks. Okay, and wasn't great,
but you know what got the job done for them.
Jacoby Brissett was on that team. He's not available. We're
going to see him here this weekend as an Arizona
(13:09):
Cardinal quarterback. So they still had they had Tailor on
the team. They had t Y Hilton on the team.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
This was a long time ago. This five years ago,
since he's five years ago. Yeah, five years ago.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
This is I want to say, it's the most cult
thing ever because it reminds me to a degree of
signing Jeff Saturday to be her coach.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Yes, it's exactly what.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
The Rivers does not deserve to be put in that
category because Saturday had never coached a lick or whatever,
and if he had, for a minute.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Excuse me, but that was ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
This is as ridiculous, not that Rivers doesn't have pelts,
but that Rivers hasn't played in five years and he's
forty four. It's not like he hasn't played in five
years and he's thirty one. Like Andrew Luck make a
lot more sense than Philip Rivers. Absolutely, it would make
a ton more sense than Philip Rivers.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Oh, you know, they thought you shut your mouth right now,
you shut your mouth? Why did you say that? I
am so glad. I would have been terrified.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
If they would have went, yeah, Andrew Luck's coming back,
I would have been terrified. Like, no, he's forty four,
he's a grandfather, and you know what, here's the thing,
when you're throwing.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
I just thought of this, when you're throwing, when you're
throwing the ball and throwing the ball the way he does,
that's fine when you are being chased by Daniel Hunter,
Will Anderson Junior, U Channa Wo Sue.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
The Niners rushers, Josh Heinz Allen, Trayvon Walker. I mean,
is he gonna what is he gonna turtle like? What's
he gonna do? Is you can try and run out
of there and do that little push past thing.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
You know, how old did you say Jake DeLoone was
when he was thirty six? Andrew Luck is thirty six.
I have chills, Johnny. If they had signed Andrew Luck
and he was and he was up for it, which
he would have been if he signed, I might have
been in the fetal position right now. Look, it probably
wouldn't work. It's been too long. You mentioned the offensive
(15:10):
line problems, but Andrew Andrew Luck retired in twenty nineteen.
It's less ridiculous to sign Andrew Lucky is to sign
Philip Rivers. Rivers played two more years after Andrew Luck retired,
two more seasons in the NFL. But he's that much older.
He's eight years older than Andrew Luck.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
So here's okay, I'd like to know how did this
conversation start?
Speaker 2 (15:36):
You know, they called him? Did they call? Was he?
They they called the Colts called him called Rivers.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
You're saying, or you don't think that Philip Rivers called hey, Shane, Shane.
I wis Lance was here? Our friend Lancer line. I
wish because he does a great Philip riverses. We had
a seniora bowl about ten years ago and there were
some Chargers coaches that knew his dad, Larry's airline. They
saw Lance up there and they're like, hey, hey, hey,
(16:02):
do Philip for us, And so.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
He had this whole copy. I mean, they were dying laughing.
It's so good.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
But he imagined him getting on the phone saying, hey, man,
I'm here if you need it, and you're just saying.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
It probably over. Oh yeah, it's over. Yeah, I mean
it's December.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Come yeah, Hey, hey, I me here if you need it,
I mean, if you need it, and then they call
him back like we need it.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
But Philip Rivers is also the kind of guy that
at forty four is I mean, he's crazy enough to
do it. He watched Joe Flacco do it.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
He watched Flacco get off the couch that year with
the Browns and go, I could do that for a
few games. Every retired guy says, I could do it
for a game. You can do it for a couple.
Now Here, he's gonna go to the practice squad. So
here's where it gets interesting. He's gonna go to the
practice squad. Let's sign him and then well, then he's
got three elevations. So if is it too late for
(17:01):
him to play at Seattle this weekend?
Speaker 2 (17:05):
I gotta think it is as far as practice goes,
I would think, but I don't know.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Listen, they might look at Okay, we have the exhumed
body of Philip Rivers or Riley Leonard at Seattle.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
They might have Ley Leonard. That's the thing.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Oh, he's got an injury too, Yeah, my injury too.
It might be ripping and Rivers or Rivers and Ripping.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
But they've got him.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
They Okay, So they've got four games and he's got
he can have three elevations.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Well, if he does well, I guess it's not a
complicated decision.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
But then if he comes up to the active roster,
his Hall of Fame thing starts over.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Oh that's right, five years, start taking like he's he
doesn't care.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Wait a second, he's up for the Hall of Fame
this year. Oh, he's in the He's in the He's
one of the three. Is Eli Phillip and uh whom
I'm missing? Oh h Drew Brees. I if I'm Philip River,
I don't know him, but just from Afar, I bet
he'll take this opportunity to play. I think there's anybody would, Johnny,
if they really want to.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Play, they're going to play.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
They don't the clock, fine, get started again, because you
know what, It'll be that much more fun if I
go in when I'm fifty.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
But Brandon Graham came back, Frank Ragnow tried to come back.
There are guys coming back all over the leak. Tony
Jefferson made it pick last night for the Chargers. I
think he was gone for a little while and they
came back to the Ravens ended up with the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
There's two ways of looking at this. And Andre told
you Jason, Jason, Pierre Paul just got brought back by
the Bucks.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
It's crazy. That's crazy because they need it.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
They're banged up. But there's two ways of looking at it.
Andre once said, hey, you know when you're done. You
know when you're done. But I also heard boomer assize
and say once if you have that desire, there's nothing
that can replace game day in the NFL as a player,
there's nothing on earth that will replace that feeling. You
can only do that for so many years because a
(18:56):
lot of other things you can do for a lot longer.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Okay, So this.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
That's why being a professional golfer is the best, because, yeah,
you might not be able to hit it as far
as you used to, but you can go in the
Champions Tour, you can.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Do all these sillies. Season. Well, gun's done, it's over.
Like you play.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
You play the game your whole life and then all
of a sudden, So you can't go play a pickup
basketball game. People, you can't go play eighteen.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
No.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
People are like Olympic Flag. You can No, you can't,
you can't. Those guys are tremendously athletic. You're not gonna
make that.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
So here's here's my other theory about this. And I
don't know what Ryley Leonard is. I know I know
what Brett rippon is.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
But that team right now, losing four or five, losing
the way they've lost, that team needs.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Him.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
I'm saying this, They actually need Philip Rivers to walk
in at locker room and hit them with a burst
of arrogance and confidence like he has. Yeah, whether he
can actually do it or not, who the hell knows.
That organization right now needs not only what he can,
whether he can throw it or not, who knows, But
the fact that he can bring that machismo that he has,
(20:05):
that you know, ability to talk trash in everybody's face.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
I know you're listening. Now, here's the other thing. He'll
have their attention in the huddle.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Here's the other thing. He's gone five years without seeing
NFL defenses. Oh yeah, they've changed, definitely.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
They've changed a lot. I'm not talking to his personnel,
I'm talking scheme wise. Yeah, some of the things that
he's gonna think he's seen now.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
I know he's at the high school level, so he's
continued coaching, so he's and he watches the game, he
watches and all that.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
But I guarantee you there's gonna be some things that
are a little different.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
And does he have the speed and processing speed, because look,
you get five years older in your forties, it's not
like you're not smart anymore.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
And can you.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
At which things happen in the NFL? Come on, it's
absolutely insane and it's a miracle. These guys play until
they're forty to begin with, but into the forties. Like
I said, Tom Brady called, he loves it. Okay, let's
get to this and we'll talk maybe more about that.
We got a lot of text and stuff to get
to and I do want to talk about the Kinders
Texas Bowl as well, because that's coming up December twenty
(21:11):
seventh at NRG Stadium. But Tommy Togi I, he was
on fire with ten tackles, led the team on Sunday
night against the Chiefs, and Johnny and I visited with
him in studio with us. Is the sack man, Tommy TOGII.
Maybe that's not your nickname after all, Tommy, but it's
great to see how you do it. I'm well, had
(21:31):
the sack the other night, which was awesome, but also
played a monster game with all the tackles and everything.
How did it feel to get that done as a group?
And then we'll get it to you individually.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Man, it was just awesome to go out there.
Speaker 6 (21:41):
You know, obviously what happened last year and everything, So no,
it was great going back there.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
A great environment and great to get the win at
the end of the day.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
Did I know, you guys probably don't talk about it much, Tommy,
but this game, knowing that they did knock us out
of the playoffs last year.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
I mean, you guys probably didn't talk about it much.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
But how much was that in the back of your mind
and how much was that in the back of the
mind that guys did you win into that game?
Speaker 6 (22:02):
Yeah, I know all the guys that were here on
the team last year kind of felt like when we
stepped in that building, we knew how like that feeling
was last year. You know, you can't deny what it
happened last year, so you know, had that chip on
our shoulder. I think everyone kind of felt that a
little bit. But like preparing we didn't really think yet.
Like you said, we didn't really think about it during
the week, just preparing for this year's team and what
was going on.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
But I thought the environment, having experience in that environment
in the postseason and in the regular season, especially recently, relatively.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
It's less than a calendar year ago.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Did that help just knowing what you were dealing with
as far as Kansas City Arrowhead Stadium all of.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
That, Yeah, I think yes.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
Playing there twice last year, it definitely we knew what
to expect, you know, with the weather wise, crowd wise, everything.
So I think that definitely helped us going into this
game this year.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
As you're sitting there at the stands and I have
my headphones on during the broadcast, so I can't hear
a lot of it, but during or before the game,
I could hear a lot of it.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
And this happened in Tennessee. I don't know if you saw.
There's a video that popped up at tennis. They're like
these three or four guys that were standing there heck
wing our offensive linement and it was not intelligent heckle.
How much do you hear the fans behind you, like, hey,
seventy two, get a haircut? You know how much you
hear kind of the noise and stuff that they have
to say to you.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
Uh, really only here, like when it does get like
kind of quiet, one offense making place.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
So that's kind of like.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
When like we hear the stuff going on a little bit,
but like, honestly, I'm more in tune with the game
and like talking about what's what we're gonna do next
and stuff, so really kind of just tune it out.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Rhally.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
How hard is it to gauge the quarterback snap count?
Or he just looking at the football? Because what I
noticed about watching football in general, it seems like I see
way more false starts than I do guys jumping off side.
So you're just looking at the ball. How do you
approach it?
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Tom? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (23:43):
Yeah, for us, we're ball key, So we're watching the
ball heavy, and you know, especially like the D line
we have, like they're gonna try to hard count us
every chance they can just to try to screw up
our rhythm and all that. So yeah, we're keying the
ball heavy. I think that's why I honestly, we don't
have too many there this.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Season, especially at like Mahomes who can do some different stuff.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Like we saw earlier in the year.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
He started talking about how this bleeping won't work, and
then they snapped it and they ran is that a
guy me veteran quarterbacks in particular that they know they'll
do that?
Speaker 2 (24:12):
You know, they'll do different things with the cadence.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Yeah, yeah, you get guys, yeah experience, Like mahomes have
good They have good cadence, and they kind of like
switch up their cadences throughout the game.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
They try to, like I said, screw up our rhythm and.
Speaker 6 (24:22):
Try to hold it, like try to keep us getting
off the ball the best they can do.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
You ever look at the clock, And I know it's
maybe harder because you're inside, But I remember JJ when
he was here. There are a lot of times that
JJ would he would see the play clock and he
knew when that thing got down to one or zero
he was taken off.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Can you see the play clock? Is that something you
can see on the inside.
Speaker 6 (24:41):
I can, but I usually don't try to pay attest
too much to the play clock. I'm trying to more
focus on like our keys, like the guards in the
in the in the ball, So like I'm not too
worried about the flake clock. If it happens, I feel
like the DNS kind of can see them more easier
for them to see that.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
Tommy, you're such a team guy, But I'm gonna ask
you to talk about yourself here for a moment. So
somebody asked me and they say, hey.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
What makes this?
Speaker 1 (25:00):
I mean, told you guys so good? Why is he
so effective? What would your answer be to that? What
makes you effective?
Speaker 4 (25:06):
Man?
Speaker 6 (25:07):
Just dedication to my craft and dedication to trying to
get better each week. You know, honestly, that's the biggest
thing for me, is just trying to get better each
week and prove myself each week.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
You can't crack him. You can't do you can't do it.
I mean you can't do it.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
I mean he's quick off the ball, he's got strength,
he knows how to get skinny, he makes tackles. We'll
do it for you, Tommy. We've done it all year long,
so we'll continue to do it for you.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
But I got to ask you this.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
I thought about this last year because I wanted to
ask you this at some other time.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
What's the celebration? What's the celebration? It looks like you're
maybe doing a te what's the celebration?
Speaker 6 (25:41):
So there is a team that's for like Tongans, that's
what it is. Okay.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
I thought that's what it had to do it, But
I wasn't sure because at one point I was like,
I think he's kind of giving it is that that
wouldn't be like you to do.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
That in a sense.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
But I kind of thought, all right, maybe it's some
a little different time to get it clear.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Yeah, yeah, and we love seeing it.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
How do you feel Monday morning after a game like that, especially, Well,
you're on the plane all night basically basically it's a
red eye because you're playing a night game. So what
is the recovery process like for you to get back
into game mode or practice mode for the week.
Speaker 6 (26:19):
It started yesterday, woke up, I didn't get didn't get
too much sleep because yeah, flying.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
Through the I think we got back at like I
got back to.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
My house at like four am something like that came
in around like ten. It started the recovery process then
with treatment doing all the modalities, recovery modalities we have here,
trying to get my body back as best I can.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
Wait, So go through what you can about recovery modalities.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Tell us.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
So I like to get in the red light bed.
We have one of those here, red light bed BFR.
Recovery is like flushing your legs basically with all like
basically like the lactic acid and all that, and then
I do like cupping all that massages throughout the week
and stuff to try.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
To so you get the marks on you from the cupping.
Huh that stuff works?
Speaker 4 (27:00):
Uh yeah, yeah, I believe it does.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Okay, the red light bed.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Explain that one, because I've seen that one start to
pop up for not like guys.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
But just you know, normal human beings too. What's that about?
Speaker 4 (27:10):
So that helps like inflammation, pain and inflammation.
Speaker 6 (27:13):
So it kind of I think, I mean, especially after
playing a game of a brutal game like this, body
needs all types of bumps and bruises, need to try
to speed up that recovery process.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
So we all know that Tim Settle great year. Unfortunately
lost Tim going into this game. So you guys had
to pick up a few more snaps on the on
the inside after did you feel it? I mean getting
a few more snaps. I think your snaps were like
forty one or forty two whatever it might have been.
And I know coach rotates you guys in so you're
not getting all the snaps, but you did have to
get some increased snaps.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
So did the body feel it after a little bit more?
Speaker 4 (27:47):
Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker 6 (27:47):
I feel like I actually don't feel too bad after
doing it too much about I mean I felt to
the ad a little bit after, but yeah, no, shout
out to Tim Man. He texted me before the game
wishing me go ball, and I mean I had to
go show it out for my boys him for that game.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Outstanding.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Now this time off, you're asked coach about this last week,
how practice is going to be. But in general, a
lot of people see Coach Ryan's they see the smile.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
He's so nice. In practice. It's very intense, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
He wants to practice with that full game intensity if possible.
Speaker 6 (28:18):
No, yeah, definitely, Yeah, they'll let the fout the smile,
fool of you. He's full of business when it comes
to practice. And yeah, I mean I think he gets
the message across to us greatly of like, what you
do during the week shows up in the game. So
I think the way we practice during the week will
show up on Sundays.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
So, I don't know if you heard this in his
press or afterwards, he was asked about different players that
did different things, and unprompted, he said, hey, Tommy Togi,
I stepped up and played his guts out because he
does push you guys hard when you get something like
that to happen where there's like a sign of respect
(28:54):
from coach to say, hey, Tommy had again and it
was unprompted.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
It wasn't like, hey, tell us about Tommy. He popped.
You just popped in his brain.
Speaker 3 (29:01):
What does that mean to you when you hear your
coach kind of give you credit and give you kudos.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
For a game you played without anybody having to ask
him about it.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
You know, it means a lot. You know.
Speaker 6 (29:11):
I think it just goes into, uh, just the kind
of coach he is. He's always a player's coach, and
he always likes lifting up his guys, and I think
gives us confidence to go even play even better, go
play harder, and you know, going into every week just
with the confidence to go out, go out and ball.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
Yeah, what's it like for you to be at home
when the crowd's making noise and the defense has to
deal with communicating while the noise is going on. So
it's a good thing you want crowd noise, but you
guys got to get the message delivered to each other
about how you're going to handle that particular snap.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Tell us about that.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
Yeah it is Uh, we just got to go out
and really execute really lock in because yeah, like when
the crowd is it's like easier when we're in the
way gates because yeah, it's so quiet when their offense
is on the field, you can hear everything. But yeah,
when when we're at home, I think it's more of
like we practiced with it during the week, like we
bump crowd noise in, so we kind of get kind
of used to it a little bit of having but
just be more dialed in when we're at home.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
So when you're out there on the field with Patrick,
whenever you see as micd ups, there's a lot of
there's various points of him talking trash, is saying I'm him,
and he does all those kind of things as you
guys are kind of putting it on him. I mean,
is he still talking trash or is he getting frustrated?
What was it like kind of being on the field
and kind of his reaction everything was going on.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Yeah, I mean, honestly, I didn't really see too much
of his stuff. Like I mean, honestly, we're focused on
what we're going to do, and I think the more
we make plays, I could only think they would be
more frustrated when we're making plays and they see us celebrating.
So I think that's the biggest thing. The more we
make plays, I think that's the more pressure we just
put on them.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Speaking of making plays, when they decide to go forward
on the first fourth down, what are you guys thinking.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
Win this critical down?
Speaker 6 (30:43):
Like this could be the game right here, honestly, especially
the backup the position they were in right there on
their side of the field. And one of the things
during the week was for the defense was win critical downs.
So you know, it came to that one. And you
know we can about with the Inco police right there.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
Along the fourth and one right fourth and one that
first one.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
Yeah, And I know that's gotta be a tricky one
for you guys you talked about earlier.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
You keep the ball, but that's also a situation.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Where you, I know, you got to be thinking, wait
a second, they're not stapping this thing, are they do
You have to kind of I don't want to say
soft play it, but man, I gotta make sure that
they actually snapped the ball before I get off on
my particular pass rush or technique or whatever I gotta do.
Is that one of those where you've got to be
really cognitant of it to make sure they don't get
the cheap five yards.
Speaker 6 (31:31):
Yeah, no, definitely, especially yeah, like third fourth down when
it's less than or five or less, you know, you
got to be watching the ball because yeah, it's always
gonna be hardcount. You don't even know if they're gonna
run a play at that point, so yeah, you really
got to be locked in.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
That's what I thought they were gonna do. I thought
they were gonna I thought he was gonna go to
hot hot try and get you guys a jump and
then call time mountain punt it. But then they snapped,
and I.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Thought, oh gosh, we gotta be ready for that, ready
for anything.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
And you were ready for the cold weather too, because
you played high school ball in Pocatella, Idaho, so you
know all about this.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
Did anybody ask you for advice? What would it like
for you?
Speaker 6 (32:03):
Uh No, I don't think no one really asked for advice,
But I mean, yeah, like I'm used to playing in
the cold with growing up in Idaho and then even
playing Otahio State. We played a lot of cold games
there as well, and then even being in Cleveland before
I got here, So like being playing in the cold
weather is nothing new to me.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Really, that's no joke on the lake in Cleveland, right, oh, Inde, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (32:22):
No, that wind, yeah, it gets that wind off the lake. Man,
it's it cuts through you.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
It's a wet, cold, tough. Yeah, it's miserable. You knew.
I was there for the COVID game and we had
that delay. Oh yeah, that's right.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Oh my storm hit that stadium and obviously it was
it was awful. You mentioned Ohio State and the good
we got some gold pants bad unfortunately Los Indiana, but
they still get the number two seeds.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
So going on combo, maybe face the aggies. Thoughts on
you boy guys.
Speaker 6 (32:51):
You know, I think I think they're in a good spot.
You know, obviously it's tough losing that Big Ten championship.
We know we wanted that one bad, especially going against
a good team in Indiana. But you know, we might
see them down the road, you know, have another chance
to see them again down in the playoffs. So I think, uh,
I think they know how to handle the adversity obviously
from last year what happened to so I think they'll
bounce back.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Tommy. It's Kids Day presented by Texas Children's.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
At NRG Stadium on Sunday when you entertain the Arizona Cardinals.
So the kids day question is this, what was your
favorite game to play as a kid. Maybe outdoor game.
You can't say football, organized sports. It's got to be
something you did with the neighborhood kids or your family, whatever.
Maybe a board game or a sport outside. What comes
to mind when I say this.
Speaker 6 (33:35):
I think there's like two really growing up house outdoor
ones who played kickball, and the other one was like
four square.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Four square.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
Yeah, square was at around here back in what eighteen? Yeah,
defensive line play four square for practice. Yeah, you could
bring that back. Tommy, Yeah, you definitely.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Tommy. Thanks a lot for joining us. Good luck to you.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
I appreciate you, guys. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (33:57):
There's Tommy Togi. I next up the Texans. In the
landscape of what is going on down the stretch of
the NFL season, I hope to meek O Ryans and
Nick Assario are not listening because we're going to look
ahead a little bit and look all around us. I
know they want to focus on everything in the building
with the players one week at a time, but we
can look around, okay, peer our heads out and check
(34:18):
it out around the NFL. It's coming up next on
Texans Radio. Moving right along on Texans Radio tonight. That
was a great first segment with Tommy TOGII and a
lot of talk about Philip Rivers signing with the Colts.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
My goodness, what a story.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
It's just too good a story to not discuss here
as it relates to the AFC South.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
And everything else we're going through.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
And Johnny, we talked a bit about the Jags and
the Colts and the playoff landscape. But a quick perusal here,
as with the Chargers win last night, they go to
nine and four, so they're in the fifth seed right now,
Denver still leading the AFC West, of course, with an
eleven and two record. Then you got the Bills sixth seed,
Texans seventh seed, tied within the actually and obviously the
(35:02):
Texans have the tiebreaker. We'll see if the Colts get
a spark, a dead cat bounce, or nothing at all
from Philip Rivers as they signed him this week. And
then the Ravens, Chiefs and Dolphins six and seven, and
the Dolphins are getting kind of pesky. One of their
victories in this winning streak is against Buffalo and that
was an impressive one. They ran for over two hundred
(35:24):
yards or eight Chan went nuts in that game. Whatever
the heck happened with the Ravens and Chiefs, they're obviously
at a tough spot as it relates to the seven
seeded Texans because they both lost to the Houston Texans.
And three weeks ago, if you had beamed that sentence
to me and said, Mark, you're gonna be saying this
in week fifteen, you're gonna be saying the Texans beat
(35:45):
the Ravens and the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
At that time I knew they beat the Ravens, but
beating the Chiefs, it's so satisfying. It makes my heart
smile when I see all the love the Texans are
getting from that victory. The Chiefs are not completely dead though.
If they go on a big winning binge and certain
other things happen, they can sneak into the field and
you thought they might.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Yeah, they've got it.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Both tough games Broncos and Chargers at Arrowhead where they're
pretty good. But you know, we took care of them
the other night, but it took another worldly defensive perform.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
I mean, look, we should have buried those guys. The
offense does a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
I mean, one of the things that i'n't heard a
lot of people talk about Jalen Knowle is a half
second away being set from the first drive being a
touchdown drive. So tack on another four points there.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Did you watch that again? Get a call? Bad call? Okay,
here's what I don't understand.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
Why can a guy go in motion and be moving
in motion and they snap the ball but the guy
going in motion starts to stop it.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
It doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
That happened two years you know two You turned it
up and you're done as long as you're going, But
you can't be moving.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
You're the motion guy. You could be moving.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Ball is snap, said hut, and then turn to go.
But Jalen came across and actually stopped, started to stop
and actually stopped right as the ball was snap. That's
what got called for illegal uh illegal motion.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
But so is it CJ's job to wait that extra
split second?
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Well, yeah, he's got to know, yes, Yeah, I mean
I I don't know. And the one thing I can't
speak to is the timing of it. Like CJ. My
guess is CJ because they're in a shotgun and I'm
thinking they're going on silent count I have to go
back and look, I couldn't remember if you go on
silent counts all timing right, So my guess is CJ
(37:39):
gave the signal that he was ready, maybe just a
half beat before Jalen. Maybe you should have let Jalen
get a little bit further if Jalen was gonna stop.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
But I just don't understand why that's motion. The guy's
already motion. He's in motion to begin with. Yep. So anyways, well,
illegal emotion beings.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
You illegally turned it upfield, But what is otherwise you
get the heads art thing in the CFL. If they're
like perfectly timed and I see them cut, it clears.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
But he was stopping.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
That's the thing he was stopping to set up because
my guess is Jalen knew his Jalen knew the point
in which he needed to get to on that play,
and he had gotten there.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
So he's like, I can't continue in motion.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
So it might be one of those things that as
a as he gets older, he realizes, Okay, I know
the timing of this play. Okay, ball's not snapped yet.
And he also he's got his back to the ball.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
Yeah, yeah, so.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
He's got to be watching the receivers. Hey, when the
receivers move, then I'll go. But maybe short shoppy steps
and slows down.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
Who knows.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
Either way, you're that close to having a touchdown on
that drive. Now, twenty four to ten. Does that look
a little different? Does the game play out different?
Speaker 4 (38:44):
Probably?
Speaker 2 (38:45):
Either way?
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Point being very difficult to go into Arrowhead and beat
them and move the ball against them. I mean, Philly
beat them with twenty. We beat them with twenty, so
you know, the Carcos and Chargers can be offensively challenge
that time.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
So, I mean that's gonna be tough for them. And
there are two road games. One's the Titans and I
think the other's the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Yeah, so what do you make of the oven mitt
on justin Herbert's left hand?
Speaker 2 (39:12):
Uh, look, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
At this point of the year, I thought, after games
are over, it's amazing. After games are over and I'm
down in the locker room and I'm kind of slapping
five and hugging guys as are coming in. It's amazing
the number of players that have things on their hands
and elbows and whatever else.
Speaker 4 (39:31):
Like.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
I don't even I can't even like some of the
offensive linemen the stuff they've got. I mean it's like
three fingers taped up. They've got a pad over here,
They've got this all the way their elbow.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
I mean, it's it's amazing.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
I saw a college team where every offensive lineman had
knee braces on both Yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Yeah, I've seen college teams have been doing that for
a long time. They like, they make them do it,
They make them have event injuries as a preventable Yeah,
as a prevent prevention mechanism. I mean, Herbert won a
game really with his runs. I mean his run I
agree huge, he just read it. So if he's gonna run,
(40:07):
he's gonna pay the price.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
He cannot be feeling good today, no, I mean, I
haven't seen the press conferences or red reports on him,
but it's gotta be murderous. Here's what I'll the way
he feels after a game like that.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
If you see Houston Texans on your schedule the rest
of the year and you're an offensive player, what are
you thinking I'm gonna get hurt? Yeah, you're thinking, oh man,
buckle up. I mean, I'm gonna get drilled. And you
know what, it is the one thing I've always wanted
in my team, the team that I follow, team that
I work for. I've always wanted that in my team,
(40:40):
that that team on the other side knows, Holy crap,
they get the big eyes looking at us, and they
should know. They played us in the playoff game. The
Chargers plays in the playoff games, so they know. And
there's no shine away from big hits, I mean at all.
But that said, good win for the Chargers, just getting
a win over the Eagles. But I think there are
(41:02):
a lot of teams better than the Eagles. Jalen Hurts
was I hate to say this because I love I
love Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
He was awful, awful and it looked like everything was late. Yeah,
I mean, who knows what he's battling. He might have
some ailment or something, and they got to go. I mean,
everybody's got to go with this time. But you got
to get out there and how you're feeling right, you know,
the you can play hurt. Injured is not the same
as hurt. Everybody's hurting, Yes, they always say.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
That every at this time of year when you see
guys and this happened. I remember it was my second
or third year, my second or third year in the building,
and I'll never forget.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
I watched the defense.
Speaker 3 (41:40):
The defensive lineman came rolling out of their meeting room
and I just remember DJ reader me barely making it
from the meeting room to the cafeteria, and I mean
it made sense, Like.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Man, the beating these guys.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
He just got up out of a chair. He just
got exactly. So it's it's going to be tough. But
I just love the fact that the Cardinals, the Raiders,
the Chargers, and the Colts. The Colts know they know
the football violent afternoon, that it is going to take
place when they play us.
Speaker 1 (42:13):
Yes, and we're gonna have another one on Sunday at
noon against Arizona. We'll talk a little bit about that
and some about the Kinders Texas Bowl coming up on
Texans All Access. Final Lap around the Track tonight on
Texans Radio, Mark Vanderminer and John Harris with you as
what did JJ Watt tweet earlier today back to the Rivers.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Thing for just a moment here.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
Yeah, he was in a production meeting and he's been
in production meetings, and he said, fun fact learning production meetings.
Philip Rivers ran the same offense as the Colts for
his son Gunner's high school team this season. We mentioned
earlier that he and Chane Styken have a connection. He said, why, continued,
He and Shane Stike and spoke weekly about it, discussing
plays and even film, so familiarity with the scheme should
(42:52):
be no problem whatsoever.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
In other news, Carly Ursa Gordon reprimanded Shane Sdyke and
for talking too much to Philip Rivers about his school team. Yeah, anyway,
but they are obviously struggling right now.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
They were off to a terrific start. We'll see what
Rivers can do.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Johnny the Kinders Texas Bowl, LSU and the University of Houston,
this is good stuff. It's Chriscember twenty seventh. I love
seeing the Cougars in this game as a Big twelve
representative and LSU. Look, I would rather have Lane Kiff
and coach LSU. This drives me nuts with coaches taking jobs.
I know it's awkward because I'm gonna fire most of
these guys, going to bring in my own guys, but
(43:28):
it just seems strange. However, they're gonna wear the uniform.
It is LSU. A lot of these players will be back,
many won't. It's just college football. But I love seeing
the Tigers in this building.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
It is fun.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
They always filled up. They love coming to Houston. They've
loved coming to Houston. Came to Houston last year and
filled that thing up. Unfortunately, we'll be out in LA
for the game against the Chargers, which stinks. However, I
love the fact that Willie Fritz and his Cougars are here.
I love it.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
I absolutely love the fact that I think Willie Fritz
He's turned around so many programs. I'm really surprised.
Speaker 4 (44:08):
Now.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
I know Cougar fans go mad at me for saying this,
but don't because I'm so glad that Willi Fritz stays
at University of Houston. But how none of these jobs
and maybe they did, maybe Willy told him. No, I
don't know, but I never heard Willy's name associated with
any of these open jobs around college football, and that,
to me is an absolute joke.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
Great news for uh, yeah, it is.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
It is weird because he's a programmed builder, he's tremendous,
He's getting it done.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Here.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
I mean nine and three is nice. I know everybody
didn't want that third loss. Blah blah. Look, it was
a really good season for that season. I don't have
to remind you about where they were, right, So let's
just be glad he's here and he's leading the Kougs
to good things.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
They were nine to three, right, Yeah, Texas Longhorns nine
to three, Yeah, same record, same record.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
All right, on that note, I know I'm on that note.
I'm poking. I'm poking.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
I didn't have a chance publicly give my take on
the whole playoff deal.
Speaker 2 (45:03):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
Number one is it's like I always said, they love
this stuff. Everybody's talking about college football right now because
whether you have let's pit the final two together, then
three and four have an argument and everybody debates it.
So now you have twelve and the first second third
team out, they're gonna have a big debate and everybody's
gonna go nuts. I will say this, with twelve teams,
(45:26):
it is ridiculous that the group of five gets two
in the way they are in I know they want
it to be inclusive, and I'm all for that, but
you have to put together, you know, like Tulane back
in the day, undefeated, they don't get in or whoever else.
You have to have an undefeated record, I would think,
or at least a high enough ranking to warrant that.
All right, put that aside for the moment. Within the
(45:47):
context of this though, there is no way on God's
green earth that Alabama should be in this playoff. You
lost three games, you lost a Florida freaking state, and
you lost at home.
Speaker 2 (45:59):
I know, oh, use a good team in the field,
but you lost at home. So to me, easy riddance.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Just get rid of the Crimson tide, let Notre Dame in,
and we are done.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
In the context of this one, do you agree with that? Yeah,
I think the whole Notre Dame Miami thing to me
was kind of overblown. I thought both of them should
have been in. I thought Alabama should have been out.
Three losses.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
I know, championship game, yeah, but you do play it
though you got worked. They got worked in the ES champions.
Speaker 1 (46:26):
You can't punish them for being in that game. I'm
not punishing them. I'm congratulating them for being one game.
What's now they lost, So get out of here. You
lost three times. You have no argument the Longhorns, no argument.
Once you lose three times, you.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
Were Clark, We said for Vanderbilt because they were tended too.
Vanderbilt should have been in consideration too. Clarklee was like,
we had our opportunities. We didn't beat Texas, we didn't
beat Alabama. We had our opportunities on the game in
those games to do it.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
We didn't do it.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
But meanwhile, Bama's in with three losses in Vanderbilt and
I know they'd beat Vanderbilt, but.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
Come on, I get it. But my point is that's
that's how you're supposed to react. Well, how Clark wille
and yeah, yeah, instead.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
Of being Notre Dame. Notre Dame is like I'm gonna
take my bomb go home.
Speaker 1 (47:05):
I hope, I hope. And I'm sure this is out there.
I haven't read this. Did they ask the players what
they wanted to do?
Speaker 2 (47:11):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Did Freeman ask the players or the ad just acted
alone and he's making all these statements about the most
dominant time.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
If the ady acted alone and Marcus Freeman, I'm pissed
because that comes back on Marcus Freeman, like, hey, you
guys didn't want to compete exactly.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
I would have players, you want to be in the
Pop Tart Bowl or whatever it's gonna be. And if
they say, yes, coach, we'd like to play, let's go play.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
Let's go play.
Speaker 4 (47:32):
Face.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
They should have been in They should have been in Alabama.
You said it.
Speaker 3 (47:36):
Alabama been leaking oil for about four or five weeks.
They got beat by Oklahoma. They did not look good
in the Auburn game, and they looked awful in the
SEC championship game.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
And you let them in. Nick Saban's not there anymore.
You don't need the action only they not get in. Mark,
they didn't drop. They lost by three touchdowns and they
stayed at nine. Meanwhile, b why you got beat again?
He dropped all the way out of the top fifteen
because it's Bama. It's the SEC tite.
Speaker 4 (48:01):
All right.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
That's it for the show tonight. Tomorrow night, Nick Cassario
will be on, among many other things, so check it
out at six o'clock and Texans matchup coming up next.
Let's relive the Chiefs game and some other stuff with
Johnny Harris here on Texans Radio.
