Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
You're very welcome into the Irish Theaters podcast presented by
Erlingcaus as we rock up for week eleven. I'm recording
this podcast from a hotel room in Madrid. It seems
like only yesterday the Steelers came to Dublin and now
we've got through every international game for the last one.
I know the Steelers aren't playing, but I do want
to give a quick shout out to former Steeler Making Fitzpatrick,
who sends his regards to all Staeters fans in Ireland.
(00:27):
And even though he's not with the Dolphins, had a
chance to chat to him earlier on and I've got
to leave a bigger guests than that on this week's podcast.
You know him from seeing him all over the internet
doing podcasts. He's still involved coaching college football, but we've
seen him on our screens, hear him in our ears
when it comes to Sky Sports NFL. Jeff Ryan Wold,
very very good to have the honor.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Jet.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I believe you're the first person internationally to come on
here twice this season. You're big time now man, how
are you doing well?
Speaker 4 (00:55):
I think it's a big honor. I mean when anytime
you're talking about in organization.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
As iconic as the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's a It's an honor.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
It really is an honor, Mike, because again, as you know,
I'm in that generation of fans that because I'm a
football fan first that you know, grew up with the
Steel Curtain and Joe Green and Jack Ham and Jack
Lambert and you know, Mel Blunt and all those tremendous,
tremendous Steelers. Terry Bradshaw. You know, I coached at Louisiana
(01:26):
Tech and had an opportunity to meet Terry a couple
of times, and you know, obviously he is a Steeler forever.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
I mean, he is black and Gold forever.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
And you know it was really I was, you know
what shocked me about Terry when I met him, how
big he is. I mean, he is a big man.
I mean, so there's no question he could throw that.
He could throw that pill a long way. And when
Lyn Swan was out there and John Stalwarts was out
there running for it, you know, that was some fun
football to watch.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Sounds agast Man's got a soft spot for this.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
The theaters.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I tell you, I seen I seen Terry Brodt shot
at the media there for the Super Bowl last year,
and even at his age, and I couldn't get over
how tall he was. You just could imagine go back
into this, as you said, slinging that ball, Jeff, We're
gonna talk about the struggles last week in the second
and we're gonna look ahead of this week eleven game
very shortly as well. But this is the first time
you've been you've been on the podcast since the game
(02:19):
in Dublin. I know you were not in Dublin, but
you guys, I believe played so Jeff Folks coaches for
Hawaii and you guys played the Saturday. I think you
had a bye week, so you were traveling home and
I think he had a chance to watch the game
from Afar. What did you think of it? Because I like,
for me, like obviously on a personal level, it was
a triumph. And when you see it's funny today because
(02:44):
I was in the burn about today and I've seen
just how happy a lot of the Spanish journalists were.
They were so like excited. I know that was me
like a few weeks ago, like like like a little
child of Christmas. But it was, it was, it was great,
It was it was good.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Crack.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Just how how good do you think that was for
the Steeler chef and that like that, I think of
the iconic moment where you had tomlan Rogers and Tom
Heyward walking out of the stadium. I mean, who could
It was like a perfect fairytale one. What was it
like watching from Afardo? Because I know you wanted to
be there.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
You know for me. You know again when when you
when you recognize you.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Know the combination of the Steelers in Ireland and how
entwined the organization and the Rooney family is with you know,
their you know, historic roots in Ireland, you know that
that's such a great success story and to take their
team back to their roots and take their team back
(03:42):
to you know, where their heritage comes from. And the fans,
the way the fans in Ireland embraced the Steelers and
the way that the Steeler fans travel. Because Mike when
out of the tunnel and this was the moment that
that got.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Me out of the tunnel.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
You saw those iconic uniforms, a uniform that has really
not changed in fifty years, right, And I think there
is something to be said for history and tradition and
you know that they're the only team in the league
(04:24):
with their decal only on one side of their helmet, right,
Their uniforms have been you know, when they come on
the field, it's like the New York Yankees in baseball
with their pinstripes.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I mean, it's just it's just who they are.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
And it's got to be an incredibly thrilling experience to
put that jersey on, right, and put that helmet on
and know that you're representing something and playing for something
that is way.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Bigger than you are. And that seems so cliche.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
And maybe you know that, well, this is pro football.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
It's a business.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah, it is a business, but you know, you still
stand for something, and you know, I think that's that's
what one of the reasons why the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Have become what they are. They do business different, right.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
They don't fire coaches willy nilly, they don't move general
managers every two years. Mike Tomlin has been there nineteen
seasons and that's five more. You know, then then you
know some of the longest tenures in history. I mean
you think about you know that that how that nineteen
(05:46):
years at the same place, nineteen years.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
The message has been the same.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
It's incredible, but it is and people will look back
in that for years to come and think because there's
not a lot of we're talking abou Dublin there, but
just just I like the way you've got I like
the way you come into this. You're almost proude in
the sense of because you know, in life and also
in sports now, it's rare to see that kind of loyalty,
(06:13):
but that kind of progression and that kind of and consistency,
which is very.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Important, Michael, that's that should be the blueprint if you
you know, you look at organizations that every three years
are firing coaches, every four years of firing gms, every you.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Know, changing court.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
I mean, it's like, don't you guys pay attention. Look
at look at the Steelers. Look to the Steelers. You
know Bill Coward was there and he was the one
I was talking about. You know, he was there for
I think fourteen or fifteen. How many coaches have they
had in the last forty years, right, I mean, it's unbelievable.
(06:58):
They are a model of insistency and they do business
their way, and they don't script, they don't you know,
that's not like you know that, but they do things
the Steeler way. And I've talked to guys who have
played there and coached there and they say they all
say the same thing, that there is a certain way
(07:21):
that things are done with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and you
better put your agenda aside when you wear that black helmet.
And you know they've had they've had guys that couldn't
put their agenda aside long enough and where did they
end up?
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Somewhere else?
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Right, But the Steelers kept winning because there's something to
be said for, you know, having a culture.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
That transcends per you know, individuals.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
There have been love. That's a phenomenal answer. Thank you
very very much, chef. We're gonna talk with this game
this weekend in the second, but just before that there
have been up week elevenue of the season, Steelers had
an early buye week out of Dublin, and you think
of that high in Dublin, the way that like it
all worked out for the Steers or really family, they
(08:16):
get the buye a week. There's been ups and downs.
I think of that game against the Colts where they
win it, especially the Colts coming in like they and
they still are obviously very very well thoughtowed, but to
win that game at home is a big thing. But
yet when you look at and there's no point in
ignoring us, and you hear Aaron Rodgers, we're gonna hear
(08:37):
from We're gonna hear from him in the second Those
guys struggled last week against the Chargers to the point where,
you know, they never looked like they were probably that competitive,
especially in the second half at certain points, especially when
they're giving up points twenty five to ten loss against
the Chargers. How do you how do you sum up
(08:59):
the first ten weeks of this season, the first nine
games for the Steers team who are five and four,
they see the VENs coming back in for Stears fans listening,
how do you suone up on what do you think
needs to improve generally?
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Well, I would never you know, I would never pretend
to know what Mike Tomlin says to his football team,
because Mike Tomlins one of the great coaches in the
history of the NFL in terms of how he manages
his football team and his messaging to his football team
is always I think, amongst the best in the league.
But certainly if you look at the Steelers, and this
(09:33):
is the thing that the fans sometimes lose sight of
If you look at the Steelers, they are five and
four right now. You want to get to Thanksgiving at
least five hundred, right, So they're in that, they're in
that ballpark. The good thing is they're playing in the
division that has been weakened by injury in Baltimore and Cincinnati.
(09:54):
Cleveland's out of it.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
What's important to the Steelers in my opinion, and I'm
sure that Mike's talking to his team this way. We
have got to trend now in a positive direction. Here
are the things that I see about the Steelers. There
was a time when Terrell Austin and the defense really struggled.
The last time they played Cincinnati, they got exposed in
(10:19):
man coverage. But I've watched and this is what great
football teams and great coaches do. I've watched them start
to adjust what they want to do schematically to fit
the guys that they have. Right So that I think
is a real positive. And you've seen the defense in
the last two weeks really start to come back. The
(10:40):
pass rush has started to come back again. They're playing
more zone in the back end, and I think that
those are all good things.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
You know, for Steeler Nation. If you're looking for positives,
that's a positive.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
I think the challenge for the offense now is who
is going to emerge as the second and third receivers
in that in that offense because DK obviously you see
him and you recognize what a talent he is, and
Rogers can certainly still get him the ball. Washington is
(11:14):
developing as a receiver at at tight end. Friarmouth is
a consistent tight end, but it's you know, Roman Wilson
and that that bunch in the receiver room that I
think need to step their game up and you know,
develop a more I don't know, if Aaron has a
lot of confidence in his second and thirds and you've
(11:35):
got to have that.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Do you think that just is going to take more
time to develop?
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Yeah, because again people, we're in this instant gratification world
right now, right but you've got to understand it takes time.
Everybody runs a route a different way. Every quarterback has
a different way he wants to throw, you know again,
and that is developed that can only be developed through repetition,
(12:03):
through time, and through consistent messaging from the head coach
all the way through the organization. And that has always
been what has been Mike Thomlins's greatest strength. And so
now you say again, because as fans we look at
we always see the negative, right and we don't Well,
(12:26):
you say, well, we didn't, you know, we we didn't
produce enough offensively, And and Aaron was bluntly honest, and
I credit him for that, right he was, he was,
you know, they do. They got to better, get better
on offense, but they got to get better in every phase.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
But they're still first in the division and as far
as I as far as.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
I know, nobody's won the division and nobody's out of
the playoffs yet. So you just focus on the process
and don't listen to all the noise that's out there,
because the process is ongoing. Right, They've still got to
They've still got room to improve in all three phases.
And when you look at why Mike Tomlin has survived
(13:07):
in a business that is, what have you done for
me this week? For nineteen years in the same place,
it's because the messaging has been consistent. They don't panic,
they don't look you know that, they don't grasp at straws.
They go back to what they know is the recipe
and The recipe in Pittsburgh has always been the same thing.
(13:31):
Don't turn it over, play great defense, get after the
other team's quarterback right, and you're gonna and you're gonna
be in the play like they have been. You're gonna
be in the playoffs every year.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Just on that. We're we're gonna get our CAZy the
game in a second for this Bangles Staters game. Before
we do that, we're gonna hear from a guy who
just talked about that now, coach Tuman was talking to
the media this week. We're also gonna hear from arm
Rodgers out to not disappointing defeat to the Aded Chargers
and looking ahead to this week on the Irish Theaters
podcast presented by Eric Lingis.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
You know, from a planning perspective and a playing perspective,
all of us involved, coaches and players, we didn't do
a good enough job positioning the others to be impactful
and the others didn't make enough plays. And that's just
the reality of it. So with that understanding, man, we
go back to work. I think on the other side,
you know, I'm feeling some stability there that we've gotten
(14:22):
really solid with Jalen Ramsey and Kyle Duggart at safety.
I think there's been a reduction in some of the
big plays. I think we're making people earn it more
Big time AFC North Ball. I'd be remiss if I
didn't talk about the special team's component. Darren has been
there coordinator for a long time. Charlie Charlie Jones ran
to kick back the other week. I think he's got
(14:43):
three returns for touchdowns in his in his three year career,
one one punt return and two kickoff. And so the
field position component of this game is and always will
be significant. Uh. Darren and Danny Smith mean going at
it a long time man. Those two Grizzly Terans will
be another chapter in their story this weekend. All of
(15:03):
the above will be reasons why to tune in and
be big factors for for why this game is a
big one for us. I'm excited about the prep process.
They show your excitement for a game like this through
the prep process and so been a good couple of
days from a staff perspective, formulating strategy, divide and the
work up, et cetera. Can't wait to get on the
field with the team tomorrow and continue.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
Knew the third down wasn't very good. Uh, you know,
we're all for our first I don't know eight or
nine a team like so that that put us in
uh you know my neighbor. Obviously field vision didn't help.
But when you're backed up, you got to get a
first down and a couple of first downs start to
shift that we didn't do that turn the ball over
too many times. You look at the third down struggles.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Is there a common thread or something.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
You guys have during the.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
Yeah, there's some things we can work on, for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
I canna tell.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
You you guys, we like to.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Keep this team to counter the different things that teams
thrown you guys.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
I have a lot of confidence in our ability to
counter whatever anybody throws our way.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I feel like.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Getting I'd love to see Jalen on the first, second,
or third down, but I love seeing Kenny on first, second,
third down too, So you got a luxury of those
two guys. I think we need to keep getting Jalen
more more runs on first, second down and mix them
in on third down. But Kenny's in a great job
on third down for us. Aaron, you've had a rough games,
(16:36):
have learned over the last twenty years in terms of
making sure one doesn't believe. It's just consistency, if the
if the process is right, you know, you don't have
to make any major changes and freak out. It's you know,
it's the nature of the league. There's gonna be a
you know, a stinker every now and then. You just
gotta know, bounce back, get back to the things you
(16:58):
do and get back in your routine and trying to
be better the next week.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
What do you think it was? What are you talking
up to?
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Well, they've got a good defense, you know, they clamped
us down, and a couple of throws I usually hit,
I missed the main reasons.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Good to hear from the guys. It's always good to
hear from this guy. Jeff Ryanbold, Jeff, you've said a
few things are already. This Bengals. You know, this Bengals
team is three and six. They're looking to having Joe
Burrow back. After Thanksgiving. They put up thirty one points
on the Steelers weeks ago. They can still put up points.
They expect, they expect Joe Burrow back, and frankly, you know,
(17:38):
this is the point of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson
Soccer used to call it squeaky bum time. It is
the Ravens are clawing, crawling back, and this lead in
the North now is very much something to look at,
and it's imperative for the Steelers team to go wide
at home this weekend and and win this game. For me,
For me, Jeff, I want to see them run the
ball more, but I want to see more consistent, more
(18:00):
confident plant with Martin Rodgers, especially off of that game,
I can see how that charges. That's binds block. Let's
got a couple of such times on the border earning
and make this a win for the Steelers. Any keys
to the game that you feel you have, especially if
we look back at how they performed in La, it's
it's going to be very very important for quick binds
block here, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
I think? Yeah? I do.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
I really think that the key for the Steelers is
to play great, complimentary football. They didn't do that last
time they played Cincinnati, right, there was kind of a
I don't know, you know again because I wasn't on
the sideline, I wasn't on the phones. But when you
watch them not be able to adjust on defense and
(18:39):
Jamar Chase goes off like he goes off. I don't
know how many he cut twelve or thirteen balls that night.
Obviously they'll have a they'll have a plan for that,
right Joe Flacco when he's hot, and you make it
you know, you make it easy for him because you
got you're locked up in Manda Man all over the field.
He can get the ball out of his hands quick.
(19:00):
He knows where to go to, you know, with the ball.
They've got to play I think sounder defense. And again
the pass rushers have got to do their job against
Blacke because remember Flacco is a forty seven year old
quarterback that struggles when he gets you know, pressure and
out of the pocket. Danny Smith and his special teams
(19:22):
have got to create field position because if the Steelers
win the field position battle, they have a great chance
of winning the football game because it can be balanced
or be more balanced when they're getting the ball at
center field or on the other side of the fifty
yard line because of a special team's player or a
special teams plays. And then I think offensively, like I said,
(19:46):
I think I agree with you, Mike. You talk about balance,
there's two ways to look at balance. Balance is either
throw the ball or get the ball in everybody's.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Hands, or it's run pass balance.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
I think they need to be a to run the
ball enough that you know, rogers end the receivers. And
it's not just Rogers, it's the receivers. Like we talked about,
the twos and threes have gotta have got to step up.
I think through I think Friar Moove needs to have
a good game too, right, and and because he you know,
if if they double DK and they take DK away
(20:21):
in my estimation, well I think I think it's more
on pack right, And like I said, Washington has started
to develop as a pass receiver. He came into the league.
I think he caught six balls his senior year at
Y're at Georgia. Right, he came into the league as
a blocking tight end. But he is a unique athlete
and they've worked and developed him into now a viable
(20:45):
pass catching tight end. And two guys like that is
huge because it puts pressure on the defense. It limits
the amount of dbs that you can play, and that again,
those are all critical factors in this game. So I
think the Steelers playing great complimentary football, not taking penalties,
win the field, pat, We'll win the field ball position
(21:07):
battle and come out of this thing with a W
and keep the pressure on the Ravens and keep the
pressure on Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Big games coming up in this AFC Nor. If this
is gonna go all the way down to the last
few weeks, Jeff, I could listen to you talk Staters football,
Talk AFC NOR football all damn my mom. Just for
people that are listening to this podcast. Not on Sky
Sports NFL this week, but it's on NFL game Pass
on the Zone if you're going out in the boat
in Ireland, the OTB Sports opp Jeff German Muggan, thank you,
(21:40):
thank you very very much for coming on here. We
appreciate it and I'm sure we'll find a way to
shot to you at some point again this season. Thank
you very much mam for.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Coming on Next time. I'll bring my terrible top.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
I expect to see that very very soon. For everyone
everybody listening, thank you so much for joining us this week,
and we hope you enjoyed a game on Sunday Week
eleven ahead. These weeks are flying it. What shout you
said
