Speaker 1 (00:07):
Everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
You're very welcome into the IRA Series podcast presented by
Erlingus Week fourteen.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hi, is it week fourteen of the NFL season.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I'm my co host this week or my guest is
already gosping at that day.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
You're all very welcome to Wes. You are here from
sears Isation Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
From Steters Radio, generally all different types of media joining
us again, Wes, you're very very welcome back on here.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
How are you doing? First and foremost, I'm.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Good, Mick.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
I mean, it's been you know, it's been a tough
week on the back of Sunday's performance, But you know,
I'm fortunate, Like I've got two young daughters. It's Christmas
holiday season. It's hard for me to be depressed about
football around them. They help me do a good job
of keeping things in perspective and turning the page.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
But I'm doing well.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Partner, good to be back here with you, and I
hope I hope you're doing well as well.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, definitely getting into the holiday mode on day that
is maybe taking my mind off of the just a
little bit as well. Not being said, we are going
to talk about what's coming up down the stretch. We'll
talk about what happened last week in a week second,
they would be a miss of me. Not to joke
in the fact that we met each other at the
game at the Pokers game the week seven week get
and we completely miss each other in in Ireland because
(01:19):
it was just busy week.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
As you enjoy yourself, Oh I had.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
It was a trip of a lifetime. Man.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
I cannot wait to take my wife and my kids back.
I think that's the best way to describe it. But
the weather was amazing. We lucked out there. The people
were amazing. The Irish culture is so rich and so incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
I've been fortunate enough to go a few other places
around the globe. You know, I've been to Canada and
Mexico obviously, I've been to Spain. I've been to Italy.
I've been to Australia and New Zealand. And I wouldn't
say those places hate Americans, but they're also not overly
excited to see us coming. There's kind of a middle ground.
I wouldn't say they hate us, but they certainly don't
(02:00):
love us.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Man.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Everyone in Ireland was like, we're so happy we're you're here.
We're so happy you're bringing the NFL to Dublin. We've
been waiting forever for this. Everyone was so kind, everyone
was so friendly. I loved the culture, I loved the
guinness it was. It was an incredible experience, man, And
like I said, I will certainly be bringing the family
back at some point before too long.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I love it and hopefully we get you and all
the guys back at some stage as well.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
And thank you for.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Doing what you continue to do and beating the drum,
not just over those weeks in regards to Ireland, but
even whenever we had the chance to meet around the
combine and stuff. It was definitely something to look out
for the year. We would appreciate it. Let's start the
podcast off with some good news for Irish fans. This
game on Sunday against the Ravens is on television. It's
on Sky Sports Plus, but it's also on NFL game
(02:47):
passed on the Zone. It was on free television last
week against the Bills on those Sky Sports so we're
still on TV this week Before we talk about this games. Yeah,
there's no point in cotton around this. It was a
disappointing loss last week, probably disappointing in the fact of
when you watched how that first half performance went the
(03:09):
round I talked last week in the podcast, I expected
maybe a lot more activity on both sides of the
ball from both teams in the first half. But when
we get into the locker room in halftime, I said, okay,
well savagely grind, did I do whatever you have to
do on it? Just it just went in the second half?
Like where do you you know, as somebody is sitting
(03:30):
there and watching that in person, where do you look
at that and think you know this needs to improve
over the next few weeks.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Yeah, two things, And I mean we could you know,
we could talk about that for half an hour easily,
But two things that really stood out to me, Mick.
The first is, we know the Steelers are a team
they need their defense to create turnovers and they need
to capitalize on them. And despite having two turnovers in
the first half, you were able to capitalize on one.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
But those were the only points you scored.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
It felt like the first thirty minut and it's went
the way you needed them to, yet you only had
a seven to three lead.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Maybe needed a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Of a PUSHI in there, so not being able to
fully capitalize off of those turnovers and then just run
game both sides of the ball. They were not able
to establish the run on offense. But really what James
Cook was able to do, I mean getting over thirty carries.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
He had over eighty yards in the first half.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
And I think that that caught up with the defense
in the second half. And that's maybe the most head
scratching part about it, Mick, was they had done such
a good job Packers. You know, Jacob's a really talented
running back. They limited him. Colts at Taylor maybe having
the best year of any running back in the NFL
this year, Jonathan Taylor. If anybody was over at the
game in Germany, they certainly saw that like you did.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
They were able to limit him.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
The Chicago Bears, who had a top five rushing attack
in the National Football League, they held them to under
one hundred yards rushing. It really felt like, Okay, you're
gonna be able to stop James Cook, limit James Cook,
make Josh Allen have to beat you with his ow
arm and the build wide receivers don't really scare you.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
But they were just not able to do that. Buffalo
was able to.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Run whenever wherever however they wanted to and so not
fully capitalizing off of those turnovers in the first half
to build a bigger lead and then just in ability
to win at.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
The line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
But I think, particularly on the defensive side of the ball,
those feel like the things that have to get turned
around for the Steelers when you're playing a Baltimore team
that you know turnovers are going to be key. And
then obviously Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry, we know how Baltimore
runs the football. That's got to get back to being
a strength of this defense.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, I think for me, you know, sort of seeing
the energy the buffalo hot coming out in the second
half and almost you know, I think it's easy to
say it now. I think our defense, as you said,
just looked a bit a bit tired from the more day. Yeah,
like they have to find the way like teams are
gonna look nwe and go okay, well we can run
all over this. Like they have to find the way
to stop that run very very quickly and really stop
(05:57):
the ruts. And there is no better way of me
be doing not starting off with this week, which we'll
talk about in a few minutes after we hear from
a couple of guys on the roster in the locker
room just before we do that Wes adum feeling coming
in this week, Siying that seen the news scene that
he had obviously mutually part of Wes with Minnesota. What's
(06:17):
your thoughts in this because I just don't know what
to expect. I was seeing him in Trennon this week.
If he is, you know, playing at a good level,
he could be a really good addition to this offense.
It's harder to want to expect him to we see him.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
It certainly is, and that's kind of the you know,
the Steelers tried this a couple of weeks ago with
another veteran wide receiver in Marquez Valdez Scantling, and he's
still been on the practice squad and we haven't seen
him able to prove that he deserves a helmet or
a spot on that fifty three man roster.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
You know, he he doesn't need to light the world
on fire.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
If he can give them a legitimate option, you know,
I think that that would go a long way. Different
body type, different skill set. They have to find a
way to take some attention off a DT metcalf I'm
sure that's something I know you know that. I'm sure
you've talked about that in another pass catcher, to really
make the defense respect it, to take some attention away
from DK Metcalf.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
That's another thing that they.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Need to figure out down the stretch here is defenses
are able to queue on DK Metcalf in the passing
game way too much. But I'm talking down in, down out,
a friar Mouth, a John new Smith, a Calvin Austin,
a Roman Wilson. You've just been waiting for one of
those guys to really carve out a role and it
hasn't happened. If Adam feln can kind of put his
hand in that pile, that would be great, But I
(07:29):
think it's it's more likely for the Steelers that it's
got to be one of those tight ends that really
takes a step forward and starts to carve out a
role in this offense.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I really will see pot try and gets that next
level over these last few big, big weeks, which you're
gonna talk about Innui. Second, just finally here on on
this sort of general talk. Look, obviously wish Darius Lay
the bassio Sante Samuel Junior coming in the quarterback and
do you like the move? Do you think Samuel's ready?
Speaker 3 (07:54):
I do, and I you know, I haven't seen much
of him.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
I once or twice down at the facility last week
or two, but that's been about it. But I think,
you know, we know the Steelers, they've got some depth
issues at corner right They had to move Jalen Ramsey
to safety. Corey Trice is out for the year, James
Pierre is dealing with concussion stuff right now. So I
don't think that they would have given up Darius Slay.
(08:18):
I don't think if they would have released Darius Slay
if they didn't really like what they've seen from as
Sante Samuel Junior, because they need bodies in general, and
especially with James Pierre being in concussion protocol and his
status for Sunday being uncertain. You know what you got
in JPJ and Joey Porter Jr. You know what you
having Brandon Eccles.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
But you've kind of.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Been, you know, switching between Slay, switching between Pierre, trying
to figure out that other spot. If they weren't pretty
confident in a Sante Samuel Junior, I think they would
have kept slay around. So that to me is like, Okay,
if they're willing to let go of the veteran at
a position where they're a little thin, they must be
confident in this practice squad guy. And you know a
(08:58):
Sante Samuel Junior. Obviously it was fourteen months in between
times that he was on a football field with that injury,
But before that injury, he was one of the more promising, encouraging,
you know, young cornerbacks in the National Football League. If
they can get him back even close to that, that'll
be great for down the stretch and Mick, it'll be
great for you know, when they all report to training
(09:19):
camp in July of twenty twenty six. Again, if you
can have Joey Porter Junior, Brandon Echols, Sante Samuel feel
confident in those three, that would go a long way
in your.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Roster building process.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
And you know, throughout free agency, in the draft and
training camp and that whole timeline as well.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
I wish he was shotting the Monday morning when it
was in the Blues after a lost month, because you've
perkingly right up. I think you're gonna perk all the
funds up as well. Here it's grit and we're gonna
very quickly preview this Reevens game in the wee second
and before we dealt we're gonna hear from coach Salmon
on Arn Rodgers here on the Iris Sies podcast presented
by Erlingus.
Speaker 5 (09:51):
Kyle Hamilton moves to diame linebacker. He plays inside. He's
a very versatile guy man. He's the poster boy for
their turnover culture. I think he's got seventeen career force
fumbles and counting now and so ball security is gonna
be a major component of it. We got to be
really fundamentally sound there. Again, he leaves that charge, but
(10:13):
again wouldn't be remiss if I didn't mention Malachi starks Man,
their first rounder. He's a center fielder man and is
doing a really good job patrolling that area to feel
and and and particularly of late as as I mentioned,
with that acquisition, and they're able to solidify some divisional labor.
He's been a mainstay in the middle of the field
(10:33):
for him and doing a nice job of solidifying that space.
You see growth and development in Nate Wiggins in year two.
I think he's playing really good football. He's a tough
cover man, I know he went out of the last
football game, but as we sit here and prepare today,
we certainly anticipate seeing him in the matchup like this
and and and ready to deal with his talents. They
(10:56):
do a lot of things up front, man, They use
a variety of packages and personnel groups. They've had some
attrition up front in their defensive line and edge people,
and so they get into some Dime forty one. They
also get into some dime thirty two. Young draftee out
of Clemson Simpson is versatile. You'll see him in some
(11:16):
dime thirty two. He'll rush off the edge, He'll act
as a hover rusher at times in a hybrid four
man rush. He drops some. It gives him really good
schematic variation. You got he and Rokwan and Kyle Hamilton
down around the box. Some guys blitz, some guys cover.
They do a nice job week in and week out
(11:38):
of kind of changing those things up. And then certainly
when we play these guys man, special teams is always
a major component of how games unfold. They are a
really good special teams unit. It's a value system of there.
Certainly it's a value system of ours. We'll be fighting
for every blade of grass in all three phases, and
oftentimes they come in more chunks in this phase because
(12:01):
of the vertical and heartle donald grass associated with these plays.
And so, man, we got to be really good in
that space. Our return games got to provide a leg
up for us. Our covers game has got to be excellent,
and certainly our specialists have to be on it. Excited
about the prep in terms of what lines ahead with
us this week, I'm excited about getting in front of
our guys starting tomorrow morning, man, and laying out of
(12:23):
playing and working that plan and taking it to Baltimore
AFC North Football with a division lead online.
Speaker 6 (12:29):
It's really just about the personnel when you look at
the tape on who's playing and who's playing well. And
I mentioned in the charters week how good Derwin was playing,
and I'd say the same thing about Kyle. Kyle is
the guy that, like I said about Derwin, he plays
safety and base, he plays nickel and big nickel, he
plays linebacker and dime. You know, that's a multifaceted, multi
talented Swiss army knife who can do it all. So
(12:52):
he's the guy you gotta make sure you know where
he's at all times. Roco On I played against in
the other NFC. You know, the other Northern Division had
a ton of respect for him since our days going
at it Packers bears. Uh, he's an elite player for
a long time. Kind of gets him going.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (13:10):
But they got a lot of you know, good you know,
younger guys and over guys. You know, they traded for
Gilman wasn't playing good. They drafted the young kid from
Starks from Georgia, who I love watching play in college.
And he's done a really nice job. And I think
that acquisition of Gilman allows Kyle to play, you know,
down out of center field a lot more, which it
seems to have been a strength for them.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Is there anything what you guys can do as an
offense to help the receivers get open or is it
just more than winning one on one?
Speaker 6 (13:37):
I mean, it's all that, you know, It just comes
down to release, having a plan to release, and proper depths,
proper timing. You know, we've tried different things with rub routes,
and uh, it's just about having a plan for land
of scrimmage and then understanding when to be open on
the time and to each out, but I see improvement
from those guys. It just hasn't, you know, showing up
(13:57):
consistently the last few weeks.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
With the Do you feel like that's healing?
Speaker 7 (14:02):
And do you just be making any tweaks to the
cast and the stabilizer on?
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Yeah, I hope. So, I mean tomorrow we're gonna put
our heads together, me and Gabriel in the training room
and see, uh, see what we can do. But it's
definitely uh healing. I appreciate the extra day off, you know.
I love the practice, so I hate missing practice, but
dealing with what I'm dealing with, it helps to get
another day without any pounding on the you know, on
(14:28):
the bones in there. So, uh, we'll see what happens.
I'd love to be able to be under center. That'll
probably be later in the week decision, But uh yeah
I didn't. I didn't come out of the game any
worse for wear. So the healing process, healing process has continued,
and we'll see what happens. As far as the type
of cast I use come come Sunday. Yeah, I mean
(14:51):
I've been the pistol over the years, with various injuries.
I sustained every Bay so I've spent a lot of
time there.
Speaker 7 (14:58):
With Arthur Smith. When you got to talking about you know,
with the structured ways to help get guys more open
and the timing of things and trying to find either
new ways or ways to sharpen you have opportunities to
get more Downfiel shots.
Speaker 6 (15:10):
I'm very involved. Yeah, do you have a more specific question.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
Well, it's like, you know, the weekly meetings that you
guys have to do to find new challenges, and I
was asking for you to kind of talk more about
the challenges it does to find those answers when there's
been so many weeks without the Downfiel passing game work.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
Well, I mean a lot of things go into that.
You know, coverages they've been, they've been most teams are
planning uh double dky, So it's on the rest of
the guys that get open. We've been going a lot
of big personnel stuff. You know, I'm not sure what
the plan will be this week as far as different
personnel groupings, but it comes down to having a plan
(15:48):
with your release at lance scrimmage, run the right route
and then me make the throw and sometimes spend a
combination of any of those three that's it's caused it
to go wrong. But yeah, I think if you look
at to take overall, there hasn't been a ton of
opportunities in general, take those shots, and until we run
the ball consistently every single week and get some more
single high you know we're gonna win in unconditional lice.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Did you hear from the guys?
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Obviously a big, big game coming up before we whereas
before we talk about that like seriously month Ravens away
Steeve like Dolphins have this, you know, Steeters Dolphins at
home Monday night football early Tuesday morning for all the
Irish ones here, Lions on the road, Bron's on the road,
I'm home. Did Thereravens to finish all off? We was
talk about this Reevens game in the second. But this
is a tough, tough schedule, you know, read a city.
(16:36):
How many games did the Steeters need to win her
out of these last few?
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Well, you know, again some of that would depend on
tiebreaker situations, but they would have to. You think they
got to at least win three, right, it's six and six.
Now you have to at least get to nine and
eight to give yourself a chance. If you win the
right ones. If you sweep Baltimore, it feels like you
would absolutely find a way in. You know, yeah, like
(17:01):
Miami and Cleveland will factor into those AFC tiebreaker equations
where the Lions game won't necessarily because.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
They're in the NFC.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
So these odds that you see that all the time
Steelers win, they're got a seventy percent chance to make
the playoffs. If they lose, they've got a nineteen percent chance.
And how that fluctuates that will continue to change. But
if they can win in Baltimore, get a leg up
on that tie breaker against the Ravens, they've.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Got a big shot.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
And then you know, obviously the return leg when Baltimore
has to come to Pittsburgh for Week eighteen there in
January for.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
The final week of the season.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
Yeah, but like I think you needed least three of
these five and you need the right ones. Like, you know,
if you beat Baltimore twice, obviously that's the ideal scenario.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
But if it's.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
Baltimore and Miami and Cleveland and you get those three
AFC wins, I think you would really like your chances
for a tiebreaker against Baltimore at nine and eight but
it's not. It's it's tough sletting because Detroit away is
I love how you guys say that, by the way,
like we always say on the road or going to Baltimore,
Baltimore away, Detroit Away.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
That's such a better way to say it.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Detroit Away is gonna be tough because they're gonna be
desperate for a win in a playoff spot in the
thick NFC Cleveland a way a few days after Christmas,
could be a snow globe, could be crazy weather, could
be a weird one, like it seems it always is
when the Steelers go to Cleveland at the end of
the year. So taking care of business here and then
coming back home and taking care of business on Monday night,
(18:28):
and what will be a big one against a Dolphins
team that suddenly found their form to steal one of
your one of your phrases that I like as well too.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
The Dolphins very on form right now.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
But this is a massive one, man, Like this is
you know, this is uh, this is Manchester United going
to Anfield. You know, this is bar this is this
is Barcelona going to the Burnabout. I mean, this is
one of the biggest fixtures, one of the biggest rivalries
that we have in this country that hardly ever disappoints.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
And if you win it.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
We're gonna all get on that plane and why home
Sunday and feel great and feel great Monday morning. Our coffee,
our tea is gonna be delicious Monday morning. If you
lose it, it's gonna be like someone took a Wii
in your cereal and you know your your entire week
is gonna be ruined.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
There's been a lot on the line.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
I mean, they've played a ton of these big games
Green Bay and Indie, in Chicago and Buffalo, but this
one is this is the derby, this is the rivalry.
This is anfield away, this is bernabow away. This is massive.
And you win it, you're gonna feel great. You lose it,
you're gonna feel in the dumps.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
I think you're spot on in regards to that. Just
the last few games here, like this Reevens game is
very It's obviously crucial, but in terms of that double
sort of stretch where you've got you know, away from
home at home as well, it's so so big, I
guess in terms of a key to the game each
For me, it's it's it's stopping the world. I mean,
I watched that Reevens Bengals games week and we know that.
You know, obviously the Bengals with Jewel Burrow Bock and
not AFC North is getting tighter and tighter every week.
(19:54):
This this Staters team can beat this Revens team if
they get the right sort of I guess mindset on
the gotta stop Derek Henry, got to stop the Sackler
third runner, or not to stop Lamar Jackson getting the legs.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Have you had any faults in this game as well?
Speaker 2 (20:07):
I I genuinely think the Seaters can win this game,
but it's gonna have You're gonna have to go win,
get out early and really try and you know how
it effectively?
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Yeah, you got Everything that you just said is spot on.
It doesn't seem like Lamar is one hundred percent healthy,
Like he hasn't been running quite like Lamar typically does
these last few weeks. So if you can limit Derrick Henry,
if you can, maybe you know, limit Mark Andrews and
Isaiah Likely and those talented tight ends they like to use, like,
really put it on Lamar, who I think similar to
(20:34):
Aaron Rodgers, is just not himself dealing with some injury stuff.
I think that's key. And then, you know, you kind
of mentioned this a little bit before. We before we
heard from Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin. But just the
amount of time the defense has been spending on the field.
I mean, forty two minutes to eighteen on Sunday in
terms of time of possession against Buffalo, that can't happen.
(20:55):
The Bills had thirty more offense, thirty one or thirty
two more offensive players in the Steelers. If that happens
again in Baltimore, your defense is gonna wear down.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
They're gonna run the ball on you. It's gonna be
a long day.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
The Steelers defense has played one hundred and fifty three
I think it is more snaps than the offense this year. Mick,
that's like two and a half extra games. And we
know those guys are you know, TJ's not young anymore,
Cam's not young anymore. Jalen Ramsey's not young anymore. You
need to keep your offense on the field. You need
to run the ball. You need to not let Baltimore
(21:27):
run the ball and keep their offense on the field.
That time of possession those amount of snaps. Hey, they're
important every week, but after it really worked against you
on Sunday, you need to get that moveing in your
favor this time around at Baltimore Away.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
Spot on Away as well.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
You're getting on these soccer terms, I know you have
to jump ball in a sn R very quickly or so.
I just want to thank you for coming on as
you're obviously welcome on any time. Just to remind people
Sky Sports NFL NFL gamepos on the Zone this Sunday,
if you're in the car, off the ball OTV Sports
for you to listen to it as well. Big four
games coming up off to this year West. Thanks so
much for your time on. I hope everybody listening, including yourself.
(22:06):
How's a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
Thank you, Thank you, Mick. Always enjoy catching up with you.
Always love the U, the.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Steelers, Ireland, Ireland, NFL, everything you guys have going on.
It's been fantastic to UH to watch you all grow
here over the last couple of years. And hey, I
hope to see you again in February the Combine before

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Sorry. We have a new episode of the Iris Sitis
podcast this week. The re events on the Road, Big
Big Games You from nas Nar joins us, well as
this game on Sky Sports NFL on NFL gameposs on
the Zone on on the OTB Sports Radio op this week,
give Steelers Fawns in Ireland one key to the game
against the Refents.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
Yeah, you obviously have to get your offense going and
score more than seven points. But I think it all
begins and ends with the run game for Baltimore. We
saw what Buffalo was able to do on the ground
on Sunday and how that wore the Steelers down, kept
the defense on the field too long. You cannot let
Baltimore do that again with Derek Henry. Keep your defense
out there way too long, your offense unable to get
(23:32):
any momentum going.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
So the key, as.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
It has been for most of the year for the Steelers,
it starts in the trenches. But I think particularly on
the defensive side of the ball, we know Baltimore is
going to want to run. The Steelers have to frustrate
them and limit them from doing so.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
We also hear from coach Salmon on quarterback Arn Rodgers
on the podcast. You can click the link in the
