Folks Week one. Week one is upon us early window
on Sunday. Sky Sports NFL is the place to watch
the Jets taking on the Steelers at MetLife. You can
also listen on the OTB Sports app across the island
of Ireland. More to come on that on the next
(01:43):
few days. We're going to have a preview podcast coming
up at the end of this week. We're also going
to hear later on this podcast from coach Tomlin, who
had his media availability today ahead of that Week one game.
But we know it's fever pitch and it's not just
fevere pitch for this game this weekend. We know now
we're freeing a half weeks just on We're just over
three weeks away from the historic twenty twenty five NFL
(02:04):
doubling game. Delighted to welcome in one of the best
Gaelic footballers on the island of Ireland just after a
stellar season. Obviously when in the All Ireland with Kerry
we know he's a Steelers fan. We know he's an
NFL fan. Great to have Patty Clifford firstly join us
on the Irish Sitters podcast presented by Erlings. Delighted to
(02:26):
have partly join us on the Irisheries podcast. Party. I
don't even know how many times you've been on this
podcast now, but say, you know, how are you doing?
Good to have you on?
Speaker 4 (02:35):
Yeah, I think maybe third time maybe, but yeah, delighted
to be back on.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Fair times a charm. Look, I know you're busy man,
Thank you for coming on. Look, we are going to
stick off with the football chat here, but I do
want to just start off by congratulating new lads of
winning the All Ireland mad a few weeks. Few lads,
I mean, have you settled down yet because it looked
like a real party down there.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Yeah, I know it was great. Obviously it was great
for us few weeks, but I suppose we've had. We've
had the club games now, so I had to have
to refocus for them. So yeah, just trying to get
the bodies right for for the club games though, and
keep going with them hopefully you know.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
More than a lot of people what it's like to
play in Crop Park to you know, to experience the
highs of those. Obviously NFL Double Game coming up, I think
is our first time having you on since it was
officially announced on this podcast. What's it like for people listening?
What's it like playing in Croke Park, going up, walking
up past the hill, the atmosphere or something that there.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Yeah, it's obviously it's it's really like I suppose it's
what you it's what you grew up and it's what
you're dream to do when you grow up. But yeah,
it's great, Like it's just it's kind of it's it's
so low. It's hard to it's hard to hear the
it's hard to hear to talk to the the person
besides you. You can't hear anything. But I think you just
(04:01):
blocked the eyes out and once you get inside the
white lines, you just have to block everything out. But
it's obviously a dream to play in in crow Park
and obviously a bigger dream again to win there.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
You were at the Steelers launching Crook Park a couple
of years ago when they launched the marketing campaign for
the Island of Ireland. If somebody had said to you
that day that they'd be playing in Crook Park in
twenty four months, would you believe.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Them to be honest, No, I wouldn't have. I suppose
they were kind of all about trying to make it happen,
but I couldn't see it. I couldn't see it. I
couldn't see it happening this quickly anyway. So it's very exciting.
It's it's going to be great, like, it's going to
(04:50):
be an unbelievable experience for for all NFL fans.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
In Ireland, but especially Steelers fans.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Hopefully it's the first of many. I know a lot
of people are excited for it. People that don't know
you outside of Gaelic football will know now that you're
a big NFL fan. Do you enjoy the offseason when
it's seven months long and it finally kicks in this wig?
Speaker 6 (05:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:18):
I know I'm a massive NFL fan and college football fan,
but at least that was back last week. But yeah,
like it's a long way, isn't it Without games.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
I know you've got you the draft, which takes a.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Bit of time up to talking about it and talking
about it before and after, but it's only it's only
when the real game start this week now that the
excitement rems up. Hopeful it will be a great season,
but just delighted that it's back this week. It's real.
It's it's great for the week, like the Thursday night
(05:52):
game and obviously the weekend the sun it's a it's
a great Sunday with with a full of games.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Steeers playing the Jets, which is for Irish viewers anyway
on Sky Sports this weekend. We'll talk about that in
the week. Second, the biggest story of the offseason poly
obviously is Arn Rodgers coming in. You've you've been an
NFL fan for a while to see a guy that's
played for Green Bay. Obviously didn't work out too well
in terms of the New York Jets with the injury,
but anytime you have the option of getting the Sky
(06:20):
and you have to bring him in.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Yeah, definitely, Like I suppose three or four years ago,
if you were told we'd be getting Aaron Rodgers, you'd
be very excited obviously coming off the injury and a
season with the Jets. So we're we don't know what's
going to happen, but I suppose there we can be
optimistic that maybe if you get it's back anywhere near
(06:45):
his old form and as there's some pieces in place
around him that yeah, maybe can work out. But it's
going to be interesting to see, to be fair, it's
going to be exciting to see.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
But now we're just hoping for the best.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I suppose one guy that they have brought in a
lot on the defensive side of the ball, obviously bringing
in different guys, but one guy on the offense side
of the ball. DK mccalf. We've seen him before, above
us have seen him. The guy is unbelievably fast. If
he's going to get the ball down the field, Rogers,
it has to be something they got. Like have you
enjoyed the offseason? Have you been keeping up? Have you
(07:21):
been keeping up with it that much in terms of
guys coming in draft, et cetera.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
No, Yeah, I have followed everything.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Really, I suppose, yeah, Like K backcalf is obviously exciting
because we haven't really had a number one receiver, a
trustworthy number one receiver in a few years, so that's
going to be very exciting.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
And I'm told that.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
They've got a good relationship so far, so Aaron Rodgers
does like to have a good relationship with his number
one target, so that's exciting. And then getting getting Jayalen
Ramsey as well. Getting Jayleen Ramsey is probably gonna change
(08:08):
some of the schemes and the way they're gonna approach
the defensive sides of the ball, so that should be good.
But again, I'm not like a bit like last year
that we're probably hopes aren't unbelievable high or anything like that,
but just hoping for the best that we can have
the best season possible. It's a very hard division.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Obviously, it's not a bad thing thinking like you, because
if you set the stall out, you're quite neutral in
the sense you'll get excited no matter what. I will
see what happens. I don't believe you have the chance
to go over to Pittsburgh before, do you ever, like,
look at the schedule and go. I'd love to go
to somebody's games. I know it's hard for you guys
when you've got Championship and different things. But when you
look at the schedule, like Steelers play the Packers, that's
(08:49):
gonna be Rogers first game against Green Bay since he
left at the end of October. It's definitely a city
that we need to get you out to at some point.
Speaker 5 (08:57):
Yeah, definitely, I suppose.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yeah, like I haven't actually got to go to Pittsburgh,
but I was, I suppose planning it like for the
last few years. But that that the Steelers are playing
Dublin probably saves me a journey. But yeah, I'll definitely,
I'll definitely get there probably maybe probably not this year,
but probably next year.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
So yeah, I really look forward to that as a.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
We marked on the calendar. And I'll tell you what
you're talking about his journey. It's it's enough of a
journey from carry the Dublin, nevermind from Dublin the Pittsburgh.
So we'll see the crack just on that. Like, look,
it's it's interesting to get like obviously something like yourself
if you're an NFL fan coming on here and asking
the obvious question about Dublin pody, have you been surprised by?
For me, it's been like the reaction to this game
(09:46):
being announced, and we've just seen like so many different
NFL fans come out, but more so as well, like
JAF fans ask some questions at the time of recording
the announced today, like the rteam band is going to
be a part of it. It just have you seen
a real jump in the interest in terms of the
league over the last few months since it was announced?
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Yeah, I have to be fair, but I suppose it's
been the Irish interest has been building over the last
few years, hasn't it. But yeah, it's really ramped up.
You can really see the amount of NFL fans in Ireland.
I suppose what makes it so exciting is that I
suppose a lot of people would have thought that it's
(10:26):
a long it would be a long long way away
that an actual NFL game would be in Dublin. So
for to be happening so soon must be exciting people.
And yeah, I suppose if there was, if there was
five hundred thousand people could fit in in crow Park there,
probably they probably feel it. So because of the amount
(10:46):
of NFL fans, the amount of I suppose Irish American
people that are going to want to come over Steelers fans,
Vikings fans. Yeah, like I suppose it's just going to be.
There's just so much interest in it and you can
see why you to be fair because it is very exciting.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Just finally, before we let you go, I'm not looking.
I'm not gonna ask you for a game prediction. We
all know everyone picks of Steeters. It's hard to believe
we're playing a half weeks waft in this game. Have
you any plans yet for a game weekend? There is
there anything that you're excited for in terms of just
getting up to the city.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
No, I'm very excited just for the whole build up.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
I'm not sure what they I'm gonna hit up, but
just very excited for the build up A few days
before the Royder Cup I think is starting that we
can assult. So yeah, it'll be plenty on and it
should be. It should be great crack hopefully we can.
Hopefully they'll be good crack around around the street and
at the game and after the game, so not, it
(11:45):
should be great.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Hopefully we're celebrating the staters on the Europe Double that
evening as well. Probly a best look to you and
everyone playing for your local club and everybody in the
championship across not just Carry but across Ireland as well.
I know it's peak season coming into it now and
then thanks for popping on, especially when you lads are
busy trending as well. I see you in a few
weeks of quipment.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Thank you, Thanks very much, looking forward to.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Big Thanks to Pouty for coming on and always had
a busy few weeks Champo everything else. So thank you
very much, Pouty, and I know a lot of us
are excited to see Potty up in Croker in a
few weeks for what is a historic day. A man
that was there at the start of this journey a
couple of years ago and a man that will be
there on the big day itself. And as we roll
on on the Irishitters podcast on this episode presented by Erlingus,
(12:31):
It's a big day. Coach Tomlin had his media availability
today for the New York Jets game coming up this Sunday.
As he said, you can listen off the Ball Sports radio,
but you can also watch on Sky Sports this weekend.
Here's a little bit of what coach Tomlin had to
say ahead of the game this weekend.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
Really excited about getting our season started against the New
York Jets. Before I get into those guys, all give
you a quick injury update thankfully as we sit here
today and really just based on the structure of the
preseason and how it's set up is done so that
we all get an opportunity to kind of move into
the season as healthy as possible. Not having a game
(13:15):
last week obviously last weekend helps that. Derek Harmon is
the only guy this juncture that I would characterize is out.
I would characterize herbick as questionable. He had a really
good day yesterday, and so we'll leave the door jar
for him and see where work leads us during the
course of the week. Certainly, his participation in the quality
(13:36):
of his participation will be the key variables in terms
of our decision making whether or not we choose to
use him or not. Other than those two instances, man,
we're largely a healthy group. Certainly had some bumps and
bruises associated with preseason work, and some people have been
non participants in games, some of it due to injuries,
(13:58):
some of it due to precaution.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
Some of those guys have been working their way back.
Alex Heismith, for example, and others, but we don't anticipate
in any of those guys availability being in any way questionable.
You can include Calvin Austin for example, in that discussion.
And so we got a relatively healthy group excited about that.
(14:22):
We had some really good quality work yesterday, UH, getting
the weekend off of us working on some football conditioning,
some based football things, things that are that are us,
some things that are based New York. And so with
that I'll get into talking about New York. Certainly there's
some challenges in week one, UH, schematic personality, division of
(14:47):
labor agenda, if you will, I think it gets magnified
sometimes when you have a new staff, uh, and particularly
a new staff with first time coordinators, like on the
offensive side of the ball for them. But to be
quite honest with you, if we've been in this business
any list of time, it's almost kind of commonplace with
this time of year. We were very much in the
(15:08):
same circumstance twelve months ago, leaning in on on Week one,
we were getting ready to play the Falcons. They had
a new staff for first time offensive play caller, and
so we had to do some speculating there. And so
it certainly is a challenge, but not one that's unfamiliar
with this time of year. There's enough, obviously for us
(15:30):
to work on. And the component of Week one football
is not necessarily about who you play, but how you play.
The quality of our play, the cleanliness, the technical expertise,
the minimize it of penalties, and things of that nature
oftentimes determine quality performance in Week one, and so make
(15:51):
no mistake, we got a lot of respect for the
challenges of preparing for and then ultimately playing the Jets,
But like most people, in Week one, our focus is
the quality of our work, the quality of our play,
our division of labor, our ability to display situational knowledge
and execute and make quality plays within them circumstances, etc.
(16:13):
That being said, I'll start talking about the Jet offense.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Man.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
You gotta start first with their running game.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Man.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
They got a deep and talented backfield led about Hall
and Allen. If you look at the history of their staff,
those two kind of represent maybe what Gibbs and Montgomery
represented to the Detroit Lions, and so we've been looking
at it through that lens. Make no mistake, they're both
very capable. Allen really burst onto the scene. I thought
(16:44):
a year ago as a rookie out of Wisconsin. He's
got a down, he'll run demeanor and style the Powell
always seems to fall in the direction that he desires
it to. Breis Hall is multi talented. He can run inside,
he can run outside. He had a lot of explode
and plays a year ago on the perimeter. He's good
out of the backfield in the passing game check downs,
(17:07):
but beyond checkdowns in one on one matchups and so forth,
and lined outside of the backfield, He's displayed that skill
set and so we certainly got to be ready for
that component to play. He broke a check down for
fifty seven or so yards on us last year. That
really kind of changed the complexion of that game early
on when we had already had an anticipation of his
(17:29):
talents in that area and he was still able to deliver.
And so their running backs and their commitment to the
running game, I think, I think Coach Glenn has been
very transparent about their design to run the football and
their commitment to doing so, and so that has our
attention as we prepare think think a great deal about
(17:50):
their linebacker tandem Sherwood and williams Man. There their talented
and an emerging homegrown group, if you will, particularly as
it pertains to Sherwood. Man, he's grown up. I think
he's a former fifth round pick that's kind of evolved
over his time in New York and it's been rewarded
for that evolution with a big contract. And that linebacker tandem,
(18:11):
that second level linebacker tandem. Man, it's played a lot
of ball together. They both were highly productive a year ago.
I'd imagine that to continue to grow and prosper in
the secondary. Obviously, sauss Gardener is a is a is
a top flight bump corner, a first round acquisition, a
top draft pick, if you will. They've acquired Stevens, who
(18:34):
obviously we're familiar with from his time in Baltimore, to
play opposite of him, and so they got a quality
veteran corner tandem. They got Cisco who's new at safety,
and so they got some tigh quality talent at all
three levels.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
They got a coordinator in Steve Wilks that's been doing
it a long time and at a high level. And
couple that with the fact that obviously coach Glenn has
a defensive background, and I'm certain that that he'll have
some involvement and and creates some some speculation issues for us,
particularly in week one. As I mentioned at the beginning,
there's some speculation associated with this time of year and
(19:11):
the things that he might bring to what they do
defensively is something that that is a topic of discussion,
and so we got a lot to talk about. We
have some planning of our own. We got some physical
work ahead to ready our guys and to further divide
our labor up, particularly situationally, and so we got a
bunch of decisions to make. But such as life this
time of year, particularly on a Tuesday, but we love
(19:35):
all of that. It's awesome to be here.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Great to hear from coach Tom and ahead of the weekend, folks,
if you're getting up, you're getting ready for make sure
you continue to check out the s Theeters Art and
social channels. Let us know if you're on AX, if

using the hashtags Steeters art and let us know your
faults ahead of the game this weekend, We're gonna have
a preview podcast out towards the end of the week
for this game and Sunday conno with what's out decent,
(20:02):
Here we go.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
