You're very welcome in focus to this podcast this week
as the NFL season finally got underway Week one in
the books of the Pittsburgh Staters. At the time of recording,
just under twenty days to go until the Pittsburgh Staters
take to the field at the hollow turf of Croke
Park Stadium against the Minnesota Vikings. We've got two more
games to go before that before we even talk about that.

(01:44):
Delightedly welcoming the guy that was on the podcast last year,
A man does not live too far for myself, Davog.
Mickey Davig, you're very very welcome back into the podcast.
How are you doing, sir? What's the crack?

Speaker 4 (01:55):
I'm doing well well, Mack. That's in January. It's think
since the last appear here and then you know yourself
having jumping on a bit to get back and so
getting the watch of Steelers in Sunday. It's a great final.
And then yeah, I'm absolutely buzzing off. Of course we've got
a game here to look forward to a couple of
weeks time, and I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
You know, we will talk about It's funny. You obviously
haven't been in the podcast since this was announced many
months ago, so I'd love to get your opinion and
your thoughts on this game coming to Dublin in a
little bit. But we have to talk just firstly in
regards to the immediate news that people will be listening
to and what they want to hear. And you know,
it was funny, Dalvug we were sort of chatting between

(02:34):
the game last night. Let's cut the crap here. This
was a game I wouldn't say I was concerned going into,
but very very early on we could see this was
a revamp Jets team and obviously justin Fields alongside Arn
Rodgers had a lot to play for Davog, but we
knew ourselves from the way that this game was going.

(02:56):
It was very very end and I guess for neutral
they must have really enjoyed it. For a start, Yeah,
the Nicktrows would have loved it.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
But I'll tell you one thing, and I certainly wouldn't
enjoy it. Harper through the fourth quarter, let me tell you,
and was absolutely tops and Turby. You know, one of
the best one pm games windows if you're like six pm,
if you're talking our time. But it is exactly you know,
Steeer football is absolutely final. So it's exactly just obviously
on that. It's one exactly why the Steelers brought in

(03:24):
Aran Rodgers. You know, for all the questions in the
offseason about his age, his health and whether he could,
you know, make these rules, he answered absolutely all of them.
Four touchdowns, no turnovers and not Calmus under the pressure
in the fourth quarter. That's that's leadership. We can't put
the price on you. And we spoke about DKM BACKA
had a fairly decent debut called three yards. Calvin Austin
Humory believe this year has to stop up strapped up

(03:46):
massibly in my opinion, you know you're act of Frimouth
Johnie Smith making his debut. Both contrabrated massibly in their
own ways. And you know, if the chemistry keeps building
between Rogers and this receiving ring this year. It could
be one of the more Steelers danger of Steelers offenses
we're seen in. So the only thing I would say
is MC the wrong game, without doubt, was missing only
fifty three yards on the ground, but that amazed to improve.

(04:06):
I love Jill Morren, you know yourself, but there is
a question more for that he can algate that NAX level.
These are questions. I Hopeully He's going to be a
lost record of the season. So I'm really happy obviously
with how the game went. I finished. Sorry, I haven't
lost stuff to improve on, both offensively and defensive. Later,
we'll sure you.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Thirty four to thirty two win on the day in
matt Live Stadium, and anytime you go on the road
in the league, you never are granted a win. You
have to earn it. And I fully agree with what
you were saying in regards to this we went into
the season. It's funny the CBS crew yesterday a Vogue
interviewed J. J. Watt, who was making his debut on CBS,
and he made it very very clear obviously he's related
to TJ. He said one thing well, we haven't seen

(04:45):
this offense in the off season at all. We're clearly
going into the unknown, and I really feel like what
we've seen on the day in terms of not just
you know, what Rogers could do, but the way that
he'd done it for me was really refreshing and sort
of sort of just in terms of what you said,
there's so many people out there going on when he's
at stage, and he's at stage. I know he's at age.

(05:07):
You know, we're all not getting any younger ourselves, lads.
You know he's coming like he's obviously in his forties. Look,
he knows what, he knows what it takes to win.
He has been at some of the most legendary franchises
in this game, obviously the most legendary franchise now with
the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was really really impressed with a debut.
I mean, as you said, to go out and get
four touch times, but certainly for me completion wise as well.

(05:29):
Twenty two to thirty on the day, davug two hundred
and forty four yards. I guess now we're going to
look at the team and we'll talk about this in
the podcast later on this week. When we're going up
against the Seahawks in Week two. We want to see
this team continue to gel. But it was funny. I
was talking to our friend who's been on this podcast
a couple of times, Jeff Ryan Bold or Aeron Davug
and we're talking a bit about not a bit Aaron

(05:50):
Rodgers comments postgame, we'd ignore that, but more so the
way he walked out of the stadium. That duo or
that set of Cam Howard, Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers,
it was almost like a final boss moment to see
those guys walk out soak that energy in, and it
really felt like a new era for this team. I
guess just first off on that, you know, obviously great

(06:10):
to have camback is something that we haven't spoke a
lot about this summer as we're waiting for obviously stuff
to get done. Good to have calmback. I'm presuming you're
a hobby mom with that news.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
Absolutely, just obviously on that. What you mentioned there about
Rogers walking out of the stadium, I've seen him a
couple a few years to get whatever the Jets fat
we're shouting on him, but yeah, not threeer of Tomlin,
Rogers and Hayward. Three absolute legends of the game, Hayward
and obviously Tomlin Steelers' legends, but hopefully Aran Rodgers can
can cement himself. They're not a three yo as well.
So just as you've mentioned there, it was really you

(06:43):
mentioned about a completion percentage. It was vintage Arn Rodgers,
you know, his games his day sorry in Green Bay.
He was notably never forcing the ball, never turning the
ball over. His completion rate was just up there. So
of course the legs aren't what they used to be.
But at the end of the day, you know, you
know yourself back to quarter Ublysien, there's more than intangible,
but in anyway, it's more about the mental prospect of it.

(07:04):
So I was really happy with what I've seen for
a fort year one year old to go in against
his former team, the team that's just let him go,
that believed that he wasn't good enough to go in
and win against you know, Arn Gleno. The own history
is there. Obviously, he spoke about it in Todd McAfee
during the summer, So very impressed with how he dealt
with it, and ultimately it's really about knocking that one down.

(07:24):
You know, we mentioned there. The performance wasn't great. Well,
it wasn't perfect. It was it was decent, but it
wasn't perfect. But the main thing is we want to know.
I mean, you can't fait that in my opinion, so offansively,
you know, still things work on, you know, the run game. Defensively,
I'm gonna be real. You know, it was ugly at times.
Breese Hall causes all sorts of problems just to FEUs
kept making play with his legs. But we know we

(07:45):
can do from the experience last year. I was actually
really impressed Mac. I've done Avi, but I was really
impressed with how he threw the football yesterday, which something
thought he lacked last year massively. So he's someone that
I'm definitely written for going forward. But the Jets put
up thirty two points. That's something coach he is absolutely
gonna have to say this week and not being said
as well. Gilan Ramsey mears presence felt at the end there,

(08:05):
this group came up big when they had their fourth
nd gifts that.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Was that was a huge play. That's you know, to
think where that game was at that moment and when
you knew that certain things could happen, certain things could
not happen. And the way in which Ramsey just took
through that moment. You talk about making these offseason editions,
you talk about trying to really line up players weekend
week out to try and get your team better each week.

(08:30):
What an upgrade. What a guy to bring in and
he shows it in the first moment in a day
where many people were talking about Mika Parsons rightfully so
in Green Bay making his debut and the impact that
he can make in big moments. Well, I look at
gil and Ramsey Australian and I thought, there's a guy
you can rely on. You could hear the food from Ireland,
couldn't it?

Speaker 4 (08:50):
You could? And this is exactly why we pay him
the big books over the past ten years. It's harder
to find a better corner than him. You can play
absolutely anywhere in the secondary, whether it's obviously if he
can play across the line, and that's one of the
reasons why we brought him in. And as you've just
mentioned there, he proved that at the end with that
big play on guard Wilson, that hit and it was
one of those modern head sticks that you've seen and

(09:12):
so once again you know as well as that. You know,
the Kennethy team will fumble return on the on the punts,
they're going to be fumble recovery absolutely massive, you know,
probably the turn in the game. And I have to
be honest, you know the fact that our past ruff
wasn't up to the standard that we're used to. It's
going to be getting very scary for opponents going forward.
And there is obviously you know that Calviot as well.

(09:34):
We can't go on and imagining the whether the balls
what they say, Michael, I mean career all sixty order
to win it whole blooded. How many times we have
seen it, you know, particularly last year far away the
best kicker in the league has to offer and it's
just absolutely the money every time. So overall, and didn't
play a perfect game, but we played a resilient one.
And then the NFL, especially on the road in Week
one against the Toll the team like the Jets, it's

(09:54):
about finding way to win. Rogers playing against the team
as I've mentioned that I thought wasn't good enough. So
if this is this, Arden pointed his twenty twenty fifth season,
I think Steter Nation should be very excited because of
course there's what to do, especially all these tense but
set love this team is very high in my opinion,
all the album.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
And if you had Ben Scornach on your any time
touched time, that's yesterday, well done, very very well done
to you if you had thought it's look obviously a
good mood to start the season. Always good to win
a game. Two more games to Dublin, Dogg. I want
to ask you about you know, your faults in Dublin
whenever we come back. Just in the meantime, we're going
to hear from coach thom and also Aaron Rodgers after
the big winning Matt Life Stadium here on the Irish

(10:31):
Theaters podcast presented by Erlingus.

Speaker 5 (10:36):
Man, Wow, that was fun and challenging at the same time. Man,
the NFL season is back. Sixty minutes of football.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Man.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
I tip my cap to the New York Jets. Man.
They were worthy opponent. Man.

Speaker 6 (10:47):
They fought.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
They really put us up against It challenges us in
a lot of ways. It's unknown sometimes when you're playing
a new staff. Man. I thought that were exposed in
some of those spaces at times. But I thought the
coaches did a real good job of communication. The players
did a real good job of communicating and adjusting. We
made about one or two more plays than they did,
and sometimes these games are decided by that. I'm excited

(11:12):
about the next week's process. We got opportunity to get
a lot better between week one and week two. We're
gonna need to. Obviously, our slip was showing a little
bit to day. In some areas. We weren't good enough
in the running game, particularly the RPO running game. We
didn't put enough pressure on Justin on the offensive side
of the ball. I thought some negative plays killed drives.

(11:33):
We didn't protect our quarterback well enough on play pass,
you know, trying to go for chunks on first and
second down. They sacked us a couple of times in
those instances put us behind the chains. You can't be
behind the chains in the hostile environment. In the close
football game, usually those bills come due. And so you know,
those are some of the things that you know, you
talk about or you feel immediately after. But certainly we'll

(11:55):
comb through this and work to get better. That's a
part of the process, that cycle of prepare, play, evaluate,
make necessary corrections, and play again. And so I'm excited
about looking at the video and dissecting it the things
that we need to improve upon and going to work
next week with this group. We absorb some attrition in game,

(12:15):
like always, Deshaun Elliott has a knee injury that's being evaluated.
Malik Harrison also has a knee injury that's being evaluated.
Joey Porter Junior's hamstring got tight, then we shut him down,
so it didn't get any worse than it was. There's
some other bumps and bruises associated with play. I think
Cam got poked in the eye, but he was firing
and able to finish. But more than anything, man, I'm

(12:37):
just excited for this group to face adversity and persevere.
I'm excited about the new stealers, whether they're new to
the league or new to us. Man. We got a
lot of plays from a lot of new stealers today
and they're earning their place and stealing lower with their efforts.
And we talked about a little bit about that last night.
I don't care about what means you get here, man,
you play one play for this organization, you'll still And

(13:00):
so a lot of guys etched their names into into
that legacy with their efforts and play today. Can't say
enough about Kenny g that that that offensive player making
a tackle on kickoff and knocking that ball loose. I
think Scornic recovered. Man, it's just an example of making
plays in all three phases and being a football player

(13:21):
first and a positional player second.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
Here to all the ups and downs this game. Oh,
I don't know.

Speaker 7 (13:29):
I mean that's what you're supposed to do, your NFL player.
You know, Mike talks about standard of play and the
way you're supposed to handle adversity. And we had a
tough training camp, physical training camp, practicing mid midday in
the heat, So you know, I expect our guys to

(13:50):
be mentally tough in those situations.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
Did you see up so much experience in a final
drove situation? But it does it become any more challenging?
First game with the new team, Yeah, I played a
preseason game.

Speaker 6 (14:02):
Lack of familiar I mean it it's still football.

Speaker 7 (14:06):
Uh we got host on a call there that would
have been able to run the clock out probably, but
uh Boss built us out with an amazing kick. So
it was a good team win. A lot of a
lot of new guys, you know, made some plays. Uh,
you know, Kenny made some plays. Johnny made some plays,
Jalen on defense. So proud, Uh, proud of our guys
just one game, though.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Did you feel any emotions aren't coming back here seeing
guys from the Jets anything like that.

Speaker 7 (14:32):
Yeah, I mean I still have a lot of people
that uh didn't have fun feelings for and uh so
pre game I saw a few of the guys, Caussy, Tyrod,
I left Tyrod, who won a great guy, saw Quinn
and Quincy, Jamie and you know, there's there's so many

(14:53):
guys that real I really enjoy there, both the young
backs they got and Breeze.

Speaker 6 (14:58):
So it's nice to see those guys.

Speaker 8 (15:00):
I know you warmed up with kran Pate on the field,
so when you got off the bus, what was it
like being able to kind of start off your routine
out there on the field with a familiar face in him.

Speaker 6 (15:10):
M with KP. I love KP Uh wish the organization
would hire him back. Uh.

Speaker 7 (15:18):
He's a you know, he's a character guy, culture guy, great,
great young guy. That that was fun to see him.
He said, I'm working on the visitor side. They I said,
well let's play a little catch then, So that was fun
see KP.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
Eron w How have you built that camaraderie with Scornic
and Austin and a lot of the different receivers they
used today.

Speaker 7 (15:40):
I don't think it hurt uh, the little trip that
uh Friarmouth put together to come out and see me
out west.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (15:47):
Ben was annoying the heck out of me all camp,
trying to beg me to go to uh Custard spot
almost every single day. But Ben is a glue guy
for our team. You know, he does the dirty work.
And I couldn't believe coming off that fake he was
wide open. I was throwing the ball thinking, man, Ben's
gonna score the first test uh, And then I went

(16:10):
to the locker room and saw the worst thing that
can happen to Ben. That's a crowd full of reporters
around them to get his head even bigger than it
already is. But but I'm uh, I really like Ben
and proud of that play made today.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
Do you keep the.

Speaker 8 (16:24):
Football after that?

Speaker 6 (16:25):
Or does he get that ball any of those he
can have?

Speaker 7 (16:28):
That one big was a stripped by a game well
on the kick and then you strike two play players.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Was that Kenny that stripped it? Yeah? I didn't know
who stripped it.

Speaker 7 (16:35):
But that I saw, I think Ben recovered it, didn't it, Yeah,
because uh, that was a big turning point for sure.
Now they went down and scored again, but our defense,
uh played much better in the second half, and then
we're opportunistic. Obviously special teams, uh came up, came up
big today. You know, we got the best part about

(16:57):
Week one victories like this is there's so much correct
the bull tape on there. It's like a coach's you know,
dream journal right there. To win but also to have
some correctable moments. So sure all the coaches are going
to be watching the film on the way back and
not celebrating and remembering it's so hard to win.

Speaker 6 (17:14):
In this leade. You should enjoy it for a little
bit at least.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Rolling on here this week on the Irish Theaters Podcast
present of by Erlingis. After a big win for the
Steaters at matt Life Stadium, Michael mcquad here delighted the
role with you this season with the Steelers and a
historic year for the NFL across the Island of barn
and that a historic year for the Pittsburgh Steedeters delighted
this week to have Davog McKee join me, Davog. We've
obviously taxed over the last few months, and it was

(17:39):
always the plan that you know, obviously have a bit
of a break with you guys and give you guys
a bit of a breakoff. One of the biggest things
that broke quite quickly after that was at the Super
Bowl with the NFL doubling GIAM being announced with the
Pittsburgh Steters as a designated home team, and then obviously
a few weeks to months later, Minnesota Vikings announced the
dates are announced. I believe you have your tickets. I'm

(18:02):
asking you this because I know you and from chatting
to you and for people listening to this, you're a
diehard Steels fan. You had the chance to go over
to the Pittsburgh last year, You've Steelers are guilia sitting
in your house and trun What does this mean to
you in the in the next few weeks and how
excited you for this day overall?

Speaker 4 (18:24):
Mak it means, it means absolutely everything, and it probably
means absolutely everything every other Steeler's on this, not even
just Steelers, but NFL fots as a whole. To mean,
I was thinking there last night so I was just
lying in Ben was thinking, imagine telling yourself fifteen years
ago we were going to have an NFL regular season
game of gro Harder me. It's it's it's it's something
that you just wouldn't have believed. And I have to say,

(18:47):
you know yourself, you deserve a lot of credit board,
and you put a lot of hard work in to
bring it as well, So you know, just on a
personal share it yourself. I don't think it would have
been possible without yourself, and you know all the other
content creators across the old and so opinion, it's been
an absolute It's been a long world, but it's been
it's been world worth every minute another. But then the
fact that we're obviously going to get to see the

(19:07):
likes of Arn Rodgers, Justin Jefferson, great star, j J McCarthy,
you know up and common youth stored that were probably
hopefully going to be able to see for years of
commas as it pinched me a moment and that I
am absolutely buzzing not just for the game but the
whole festivities over the week. I'm obsolutely buzzing for all
of that. And yeah, well, I say, is here we go.
It's only what less than twenty went twenty days ago,

(19:28):
twenty guys to go, sorry and yeah, yeah, wake me
up on that Sunday morning.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
If yeah, if the podcast goes out on Tuesday morning,
hold everybody in your car listening or on your phone
if you are nineteen days to kick off in cool Park. Look,
I appreciate what you were saying, and thank you very
much as the time words, but it will add to
that dove over for people listening. Steelers has done so
much in the market over the last few years. And
one thing that I mentioned on the podcast last week
was the pro shop now in Dublin. So many plans,

(19:56):
including the teal gates which are taking place that weekend.
If it's Simon, this is going to be the team bar.
Is there any one element that you're looking forward to
in dublindgust side of the game.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
Well, that pro shop was really out of the blue.
I mean, that's another thing I was thinking about. It
is like, who would have thought there would have been
a Pittsburgh Steelers pro shop bang in the middle of
Dublin for fans to sort of get their hands on
jerseys and and other memorabilia stuff. It's it's just incredible.
Obviously just been writing all of our American friends, you know,
ones that haven't got a chance to come over and
see Dublin, see our tradition, see our game, see our sports,

(20:30):
your music, and getting the show off that. But as
well as I being able to walk in the NFL
family over as well. I mean there's gonna be a
lot of people out of imagine in Dublin that weekend,
but or maybe thinking, oh, what's one of its. It'd
be hard to say what's going on because it's been
all over the place, but there'd be people thinking, oh,
I might give this to go, might give it a watch,
And whether you're watching it in the bar or you're
watching it in the stadium, it's going to be one

(20:50):
thing you're not going to miss. So it's really about
insighting our friends over from the US, showing us, showing
them off our culture, our sport, our music. But all
so it going the other way. Being able to show
the people of Ireland as a whole. You know, the
NFL itself is a great opportunity and it's one I'm
absoutely bought in for.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
I sort of said to you off just off camera,
and off Mike Davog and I sort of said it
on the podcast last week, folks, get done it a
pro shop whatever you can't. I had the pleasure of
purchasing a couple of special Terrible tiles with the Irish
tricolor on it and also the date of September the
twentieth of the game. So definitely check it out just
before we go Davog this week. We are going to

(21:30):
talk about it myself and yourself later on in the week,
But Seattle on top this weekend the home opener for
the Steelers, the last home game they play before they
go to New England and then they get on a
plane they go to Dublin litter on the week after.
What's your thoughts around this game if you had to
have a couple of keys of the game, because I
ended up watching the fourth quarter anyway of the Seahawks

(21:51):
against the Niners and Sunday night, and certainly the Seahawks
will be very, very disappointed with how that game ended
in the way that brock Perty got that past time.
They're gonna be chomping on the bit, and especially there's
a real high coming from Pittsburgh here at the minute
for me, it's really you know, consistency, don't let the
guard done. But I tell you what, I'm excited to
see this team on Sunday already month.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
Yeah, to be honest, like I haven't looked much into it.
I'm still still buzzing over yesterday yesterday's game. But Seattle
obviously in their second year with coach McDonald. Sam Donald's
now taking the rains of quarterback who's obviously he won
fourteen games last year with Minnesota. I mean, this is
in the same sar Sam Donald that came out of
New York and you know, stunk up the joint. This

(22:34):
is a different Sam Donald, very mobile, very you know, capable,
and just on the early stage. You know, I watched
a bit of the game as well. Not a lot
going on offensively. I mean, of course, you know Jackson
Smith and Jigba is a great threat. But yeah, honestly,
you know, you could arguable, you know thing that's that's
the Jets are arguably a better team. I mean, obviously

(22:55):
they didn't have a great year last year, but you know,
the new coach and the Justin thing whu is the
additional quarterback is obviously standing out to them. But I
think absolutely, you know, our first home game at Acriture
this year, there's obviously no chance we're going to let
