Speaker 2 (00:40):
Hey, everybody, Welcome into the Irish Steelers Podcast, presented by Aerlingus.
On this historic day forty NFL on the Island of Ireland.
Michael mccady here and here it is, folks, Steelers Nation.
It's time to take flight with air Lingus, an official

of Ireland. There's never been a better time to book

(01:03):
your trip to Dublin with nineteen North American gate Wiz

whether it's game day or a getaway. Erlingus looks forward
to saying you're very welcome to the players and fans

(01:25):
erlingus dot com. And that message has never felt more
opt than on a day like this. Today has been
the day where history has been made. And we know,
and we have known from early February that the Steelers
will make history as a designated home team for the
twenty twenty five Dublin game, but today it was official.
They'll play the Minnesota Vikings in Week four of the

(01:47):
season in Crook Park Sunday, September to twenty eighth. Before
we talk about that a little bit more, let's hear
from coach Tomlin on his thoughts on the matchup.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Man, we're unbelievably excited about this opportunity to play and
Dublin really for two very specific reasons. First, Man, it
is an honor and a privilege to represent the game
of American football internationally and maybe introduce it to a
new set of fans. It is a great honor to
play the game that we love and to be able

(02:18):
to do so on foreign soil. Number two, I smile
when I think about the late great Ambassador Rooney and
how fired up he would be about this game. I
remember when he was Ambassador to Ireland, he used to
have a Fourth of July flag football game every year,
and so I think about him. But I also just

(02:40):
simply think about the honor and privilege to play our
game globally.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Coach Tomblin on the Irish Sedis podcasts and a fight
Erlings on. As we get closer, on closer to September,
we can finally say that this is really really exciting
and funnily enough, the last time the Steelers played it
in Austleon was in twenty thirteen in Wembley Stadium, ironically
against the same opposition, the Minnesota Vikings. So look, there's

(03:08):
gonna be a lot of talk, there's gonna be a
lot of reaction to this over the next few weeks.
I as a fan first and foremost, I feel that
a lot of Steelers fans, a lot of NFL fans
in Ireland today will agree this feels like it's finally happened.
It's finally here. I know it was announced in February,
but today it really seems real for the first time.
So I'm sharing that excitement with you. Thank you for

(03:30):
listening here today on the podcast, We've got a great
guest today in sky Sports NFL analyst Phoebe Shacter. We're
gonna talk about about the game. We're gonna talk about
it about her career as well on the Irish Steelers Podcast. Okay,
it is obviously the biggest day, I says so far
for any Steelers fan in Ireland across Europe. At the

(03:50):
Steelers announced today to play a game in Dublin. We
all know that, but their opponent's going to be in
Minnesota Vikings twenty at September. And a person that has
walked to staters, analyzed staters and a lot of people
will nowhere from our screens on sky Sports, alongside coaching
on flag football among them, but a million of our things.
Probably the busiest woman I know, Phoebe sh Actor Faults.

(04:11):
Welcome into the Irish Theaters Podcast. How are you doing.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
I'm doing great. Thank you so much for having me.
I'm so excited that the schedule release has finally happened
the excitement around this and it has not disappointed. What
an amazing group of like matchups we have and you
know everyone's been dying to find out who the Stealers
are playing, and so to have this big reveal, it's
going to be a phenomenal game.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
It's great to have you on and I appreciate your
time because I know you're very very busy, but it's
it's been really cool to see and I know when
you've got a lot of the teams in Ireland and
the UK marketing WI I say, appear a lot in
sky Sports and we have seen a lot of the
staters over the last while. I'm just realizing as we
speak you've had the opportunity to be at some of
the watch parties. Indul I think you were the very
very first one. I remember how excited you were on that,

(04:59):
Like how did you find that? Because I think that
was like really the first of its kind in Ireland
or to the UK.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
It wasn't you know. There were so many things that
I really enjoyed about it. I mean that was also
my first time going to Croke Park, which was just
phenomenal in its own right. How massive it is and historic,
but then the way that the Steelers made it feel
like you were truly at a Steelers home game. So
we had been we'd done the first game of the season,

(05:26):
not last season, the year before at like literally in Pittsburgh,
and so kind of understanding what a home game feels
like and then seeing how that's translated over in Dublin.
You know, from from the music that they were playing,
to the food that was served, the terrible towels, the
you know, just the black and yellow everywhere. You really

(05:49):
got a true sense of what it's like to be
at a home game. And I think it's really important
the thought around the details that the Steelers bring to
the tape, you know, and making it as game like
for everybody around the world, which is what makes this
game coming up this year so incredible to think about,

(06:10):
like how they're truly gonna make it feel like you
were in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
I remember, I think we probably had that conversation back
a couple of years ago, even like when you were
walking to the restroom, like the walls had different memorabili ones,
so I thought that you were actually actually an akasher.
I'm going to just switch back even before that, just
very quickly before we talk about the news today, because
the thing is really important as well. You guys went
over to the Niners game I think it was two
seasons ago and I started the season. There wasn't a

(06:36):
great result for Stears fans, but you had the chance,
if I recall my great memory Phoebe, that you have
the chances to sit down with mister Rooney I think
a day or two before the game, and how did
you find that? And like did it really open your mind?
Like I know you grew up around football, but did
it open your mind more to to Pittsburgh, to the
Staters and their history as well?

Speaker 4 (06:56):
You know what, I was so nervous down with mister
Rudy himself, and he has this presence about him when
you get the opportunity to talk to him, and you know,
you think about the history that they have, and you
know how much work they've done in Ireland in the US,

(07:17):
the way that they really again, like I want to
keep going back to that details element, but you know
you've got their own essentially like museum at the Stadium
and Acroshure, you know. And I was so fortunate to
be able to have Dan Rooney take us around and
show us and why you know, imagine Neil and I
getting this like personalized tour, looking at all the history,

(07:38):
the steel curtain going over, pretending we're commentators in the booth,
and you know, it was just phenomenal to have that.
And I think to have that first home game, and
I'll always remember it because I have never literally felt
anything like that kickoff because the ground was reverberating with

(07:59):
the nose and excitement, and you know, we have our
noise canceling headphones, but you literally could barely hear each
other speaking to each other. And then you bring out
you know, you see the terrible towels going and man,
that was just an incredible experience to be there, to
have that view and truly live that like first home game,

(08:25):
and the fans were relentless.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
It was like like to even for people listen to
this and maybe have another chance to go to actor Sure,
I can only really repost Phoebe's thoughts here like the
tour if you walk around it, folks, if you ever
get a chance to do, if you're theaters fans, listen
to this or not give it a go, because a
game day is really special there, but what they have
built there is awesome, so definitely check it out and

(08:49):
check out the Chief Sachio outside as well. It's awesome.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Phoebe.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
You obviously work on a number of different games in London,
in Germany and across the world really bit more so
obviously in Europe over the last few years with sky
Sports NFL. Long when that continue and when you see
the news that's came out today in regards to the
Steelers playing the Vikings at Cork Park, I know that
it was announced the Bowl week and like Wet, we

(09:14):
met each other on the day it was announced and
there was obviously a lot of excitement. But I had
said to my friend Mark earlier on it feels like
it's almost the closing of a chapter.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
In terms of.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
One, we can finally talk about the data for people
listening the twentieth September week four, and two we can
actually really look forward to what this matchup is going
to be. When you hear as the Steelers against the Vikings,
how much does that excite you? Because I think of
Kevin O'Connell's surname for a start. You got the irishman's
surname right there, like Henry Hodgson literally jumped in and
asked a question in the press conference earlier on at

(09:45):
that we know how exciting the Vikings can be as well,
and they had experience in going over to London, but
more so as well. Steels obviously have made some big
upgrades this season. They've brought on DK Metcalfs. So everything's
on paper and it promises in just about just under
four months now, well just over four months. Like Bob
Mole's on my side, it's gonna be something really, really special.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
It's going to be incredibly special. And I think, you know,
you look at it's essentially a rematch right from twenty
thirteen that we had these two teams over playing and
that was an incredible game. Then with absolute legends of
the game, you know, Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback, Adrian Peterson,
you had a slew of incredible athletes on both sides
of the ball. And I think that's what makes these

(10:30):
international games so special is we have the Vikings and
the Steelers who are making history. The Steelers who have
been you know, have the longest term head coach in
terms of getting to the playoffs. I mean, he has
so many tomlinisms around him and like that true standard
is the standard and he's going to bring that no
matter where he is in the world. And people get

(10:52):
to watch history essentially, and like you're saying the upgrades
that that the Steelers have with Dk Metcalf, what that
offense is gonna look like, and again against a very
stout defense for the Vikings. But those first four weeks
of the season is anybody's game, and because people are
always trying to figure out their identity, you know it

(11:15):
ultimately is it could go either way. And I think
that anticipation and that understanding of the Steelers have such
a clear identity of what they bring to the table.
The fans get to see that, they get to be
a part of that, and they get to kind of
carry this magical moment with them, with the Roonies, with Tomlin,
with this fantastic set of athletes, and so I think

(11:38):
that's some of the people want to just see that
be around that, and that's why I think it's going
to make it so special.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
It's gonna fly in on a stony because you're saying
out there, but it being special in Isan de night. Look,
we obviously love the league and we're involved with the
league and different aspects and stuff. But to even said
tonight that I know people will listen to this will agree.
I was watching our t news in the Republic and
Easy and lover An Ireland. The top story and the
sports news was this game being announced. So there's a big,
big excitement and they're also trying to explain it for

(12:07):
new fans. And that's why I wanted to end on
Phoebe just before you might get a little bull production
for yourself. I'll put you in a spot in a
few minutes. But a couple of things the Steelers have
done really really well over the last couple of years
outside of the watch parties has been getting young people
involved in football clinics flag football. I know you're very,
very passionate and you literally travel the world. You've got
your own flag podcast as well. Congrats on that. How

(12:29):
important do you think is it in terms of having
young girls, young boys come in especially for like you know,
the ages of eight to twelve, ten to fourteen, from
any background where it's Gaelic football, rugby, whatever, How important
is that for them to try and not just learn
the sport of flag football, but to go to clinics
and learn from experts.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
You know what, there's so many great elements that the
Steelers are actually bringing to the table, because there's really
in the past two years they have truly just dove
headfirst into growing the sport the grassroots and injecting the enthusiasm, financially, equipment,
whatever that looks like. And to see how, you know,

(13:09):
we talk about it in all these other countries where
fandom is truly at its highest now it starts at
grassroots and so taking those amazing athletes from hurling and
Gaelic football and camogi and making sure that everyone feels
like they've got equal rights to fall in love with
the sport. I mean, I even loved the advertisement essentially
for the game from NFL. It was about young people.

(13:32):
It was about being cool and excited and friends getting
together and watching his sport and that kind of rivalry.
You know, we walk around these cities and we see
people wearing Steelers gear or any other NFL team, and
you're like, all right, community has already started, and now
you're starting that from a young age where you get
to be a young boy or girl who you're four

(13:54):
year five, you get to wear Steelers gear and now
the team's coming over here. You might even do a
community day with one of these players. I mean, the
ability of that touch point is something that I think
the NFL does a terrific job of. But I think
the Steelers have such a big effort in terms of

(14:15):
their community aspect and their community outreach because they understand
how much they can impact people's lives and that again,
everyone deserves the opportunity to get better, to fall in
love with a sport, and you know, we talk so
much about it within flag football, especially for girls. Forty
percent of our girls who are playing flag football have

(14:36):
never played another sport. So now you're getting people active
who may never even been active before or interested in sport,
and that's truly changing lives. So I mean, my hat
is off to the Steelers for all the work they've
done so far. And I hope in twenty thirty two
that maybe we'll see one of the Steelers' players playing

(14:57):
for Team Ireland. I think that would be an absolute
dream because they started that journey.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
I love that, and I love the little Komogi reference
as well. Well done by click from me there, well done,
look no just out on that. Like I've been to
a couple of local games a lot named the teams
in AFI over the last couple of weeks and I've
seen Staelers gear. I've seen different different teams, young boys,
young girls, like from the age of four or five.
We're in different jerseys, so it's really really cool to see.

(15:25):
So it's going to keep growing and growing and growing
twenty at September Vikings at the Staelors designated home team
first every game in code Park Ireland, UK, Ireland TV
Channel TBC, I will send up a prayer phobe. It's
on SkySports NFL, but regardless, I just want to wish
you the very very best over the next few weeks
and months. Enjoy any downtime you might get over this period,

(15:46):
and before you know it, it's going to be the fourth,
fourth or fifth of September and it's all going to
get in the road of game. But here, thank you
for coming on, because I feel like we've got three
people now on from SkySports NFL. We're getting that. I
think we're at gson Bell away from greatness and appreciate
coming on on what was not just a busy death
for yourself. But I'm pretty sitting there, pretty historic there,

(16:07):
So thank you very much and we will chat youson.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
Thank you so much and thanks for all the work
that you're doing to grow the sport in Ireland.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
