Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, I am Don Oser and this is this
week's Ozone podcast from Watford, United Kingdom at the Grove.
And I'm excited about this guest because it's been a
lot of fun watching him play this year. He's played
before for this team, but it looks like he's coming
into his own Jaguars cornerback Monteric Buster Brown. I appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Joining us, Yes, sir, thank you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
And when people approach you, do you prefer monteric Buster
or what do you want people to call you?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Montaria's fine with me, Buster, whatever you decide to.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
What Now refresh the memory? I know I know this story,
but how did Buster come about?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
My grandma gave me a name as a child, and
once she did that, it just stuck with me.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Was there a reason for it? Or she just thought
you looked like a buster?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
H my what I heard of I was just bad.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
That's fair, That's fair. My grandmother actually called me Buster
because I had a Buster brown sweater. But that was
way back in the day. Oh yeah, you used to
actually be closed, called Buster Brown closed And if you knew.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
That or yeah, I found that out in college. A
couple of people send me a picture of the store.
Oh yeah, Like I was shocked when I seen that,
Like I didn't know it was the store.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, back in my day, which is probably fifty years ago,
for that, I busted brown clothes for kids were like
the thing. So tell me about the team, the approach
this week. I know, a tough loss and the records.
Now what you guys want? How this week do you
sort of focus and move on from the situation? And
I try to write the ship if you will.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
You know, you just after a week like last week,
you know you just got to flush it and move on.
You know, even though we in London know it's the
same mentality. And for the defense, you know, attacking aggressive
and just taking the ball away and just doing doing
your doing your job. You know, everybody do their job
and just give effort and keep the main thing, the
main thing.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Got you duging. Some players have talked about maybe easier
to focus here, easier to I guess, sort of circle
the wagons and I developed some camaraderie. Is that a
real thing, like hanging around the hotel, being around each
other more than you would be during the regular season.
Maybe a training camp type of vibe.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
You know, coming over in London. You know, it gives
you a chance to you know, hang out with guys
and see everybody's personality and really just to learn your
teammate and get to know each other and things you
don't know about your teammate. It give you a chance
to know those things.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Got you tell me about you a little bit. Came
into the league as late round draft pick and have
continued to sort of stay the course and get better
and better each year. That's how I view it from
the outside. But you've got to live that and sort
of go through some tough times. How difficult has it
been to sort of stay the course through I guess

(02:34):
what is now? Three years?

Speaker 2 (02:36):
You know every year, you know, my goal is to
get better and better. You know, being dropped in the
late round, you know that motivated me and just letting
that keep motivating me. You know, keep that wood in
the fire, and you know, work my butt off every
day and you know, just grinding every day. Man, that
just motivated me and just want to you know, prove

(02:58):
my respect and everything to my teammates and you know,
be great.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
I got you now as we were walking over here,
we talked a little bit. You play with a lot
of energy, which you know, it takes energy to play
in the NFL, so everybody's playing with a certain degree
of energy. But you take pride in that, and uh,
where does that come from? Is that enjoying being out there?
Just a personal style or subscribe how you play in

(03:23):
that regard.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Man, It's just it's just the NFL. In the NFL, man,
it's the best league in the world.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Doing something wrong right?

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Just having fun, man, Just treating it as a kid's game.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Man.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
We've been playing this game since a little one, so man,
just having fun. Man, that's the fun of the game. Man.
If you ain't not having fun, you shouldn't be fun.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Now we're not on the air as soon as we
record this. This is just for audio. But when I
asked you that you smile. You enjoy being here, don't you.
I mean, like this league. I guess everybody does, but
you really embrace it.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, definitely. Man. It's always been a dream of mine.
You know, you always dream of being an NFL and
it hits you. It's a so real moment when you
finally get in the NFL and you know you never
want to take anything for granted.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Is it tough? Not to sometimes because you're working, you're grinding.
Life becomes a routine, but you seem like you still
put it in the front of your mind. Hey, I
need to enjoy this. It doesn't last forever.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, you know, it's times when you think of that.
But you know, if you got a grace of poor stuff.
You know, my family, you know they always remind me
when I get home and things like that. You know,
they helped me, you know, remind me and get my
mind right.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Got you and you performed at a high level in
the SEC. You were an interception turnover guy. How much
confidence did that give you, even when you're a late
round draft pick to be able to say, hey, look,
I know I played at a high level. I know
I can do this. Was that a factor for you
at all?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
You know, it was a factor. You know, coming out
of high school, I always wanted to play in SEC,
and you know, when I got to the SEC, man,
it's the same guys I played against an SEC in
the league. So it definitely helped a lot. You know,
you know, it's not that far from the NFL. I
feel like the SEC, but you know, it's the same guy,
So it definitely helped me a lot playing in sec.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Now, still waiting for that first NFL pick. How close
have you been do you feel like you had Do
you feel like you've left any out there?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I left a lot. I left a couple last year that,
you know, frustrated me. The Saints, I had one, Saints,
the Colts. You know, I had a couple, right, So
it's hard that one.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Fernando Bryant, who used to play here way back in
the day, he was a first round pick in ninety
eight or ninety nine. I'm sorry, he told me once.
A very insightful thing, he said. Getting an interception in
the NFL, in his opinion, was the hardest thing to
do because the game is designed for you not to
get one right, and everything the quarterback and the receiver

(05:44):
are doing is to prevent you from doing that. Is
it that hard? It's definitely hard.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
You know. You just got to prepare even more, you know,
lock in and make sure you're taking getting things right,
you know. So it's definitely hard to get an interception.
You know. I'm just focused on making the players that
come to me and just wait on that opportunity to
get one.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Now you smile, but is your interception is the celebration planned?
I mean, how do you guys plan those out or
do they come just sort of natural?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
We plan those out before? You got to plan them
one out, so you gotta have one.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
I got you. How the opportunity that you've had this year,
When you get that opportunity when Tyson goes out, is
there a different approach? Is it a different adrenaline when
you get this kind of opportunity, or how do you
approach that over the stretch you've had in the last
three or four.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Games, It's definitely a different approach, you know. You know,
you just got to turn everything up a notch, you know,
and go even harder in your preparation when you your
name is called, and you always want to make the
best out of your opportunity. So you know, in my head,
when I got the opportunity, every time I get an opportunity,
you know, I want to make the best of it.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
How much more ready were you for this opportunity this
year then maybe you would have been as a rookie,
meaning how much have you grown in what is an album?
The thirty four to thirty five games in the NFL?
How much more ready were you? How much better a player,
are you.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
I'm very a much different type of player. You know,
I didn't learn so much from the guys you know,
over the years, and just how to approach the game,
getting a routine, you know what I like to do
before the game, and you know what I like to
do during the week, like just getting a routine. So
I definitely learned a lot the last couple of years,
and you know, I'm just still learning.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
What's the difference in your confidence level now compared to
you started one game as a rookie and a few
last year. How much more confident are you from the
experience you've had.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
My confidence out the roof honestly compared to my rookie year.
You know, I got a little bit of playing time,
and then my second year, I played like half the season.
So my second year definitely helped me. You know, when
I go out there, I feel just comfortable, like the
game has slowed down from me tremendously, and you know,
I feel like calm.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Was there a moment you kind of knew that or
does that sort of happened gradually?

Speaker 2 (08:06):
It's like a moment you know it. You know, you
out there and not thinking, just playing, playing fast, and
just reacting and just seeing what you like playing and
seeing trusting what you see.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
You start realizing it's the game you've played all your.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Life, right right, That's that's all it is.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
I got you. Where's the confidence level with the team
right now? I mean obviously one in five? I guess
sometimes you have to create your own confidence. But how
do you, guys, approach going forward in terms of confidence?

Speaker 2 (08:35):
No confidence? You know, we just got to continue to
grow and you know, get the confidence up right now.
You know, even though we're not getting a resources we need,
but you know, we got to go back to work
and really just keep it going and build energy, create
energy and just get that around the team.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Secondaries had some tough games. The same approach for you
guys as a group, Do you do you bond together
during the week and say we've got to fight out
of this ourselves.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yeah, we definitely do. You know, we have meetings with
each other and you know, we look at things and
how we're being attacked, and you know, we talk about
the things and how we can approach those things.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Got you. Last thing we do here busters what we
call the ozone five. It's five quick fun questions. What
was your last binge.

Speaker 1 (09:46):

the way over in the car, But since you didn't

heard today?

want to do everything for her, all the things she's
been through. And you know, my high school coach, he
always kept me on, kept my hair straight too, and
just kept me on pointing and kept me focused. His
name Matt Richardson.
