Didn't meet anybody in the world, and I think we're
gonna win.

starting with just me and you today because Bart's having
(01:00):
problems with technology.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Well it's it's not the first time, and you know,
it's something that we've come to expect. We feel a
little sorry for Bart, but we still love them regardless.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
All Right, he'll join us soon, but let's talk about
Week one in the National Football League. As we look ahead,
to Jets Bills in Week two, a big time showdown
at MetLife Stadium. Overall, your thought of the play in
the league and also focused on the Jets from our perspective,
(01:31):
what did you think about the Green and White in
that opener?
Speaker 4 (01:34):
I thought the offensive line played great. I mean the
thing that just jumped out across the board of the
Jets and not in perspective of the whole league. I
thought the Jets offensive line played as well as anybody
in this whole league. And that's really encouraged you because
obviously we lost to Oli via Tucker last week. But
Joe Tipman stepped in. I think it's actually his best position.
(01:55):
But Joe and Josh with the rookie membo was fantastic.
I mean that t J Watte out there and Alex
Heismith and those guys did not, you know, really ruin
the game in any way. And then I thought the
offenses that did play well in this league, you saw
great coaching. I thought Tanner Instrom really stood out with
his formations, his motions, how he protected the engines. I
(02:19):
thought he was very very good. And I thought it
was a good operation offensively by the Jets.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I'm glad you mentioned Tipman because obviously he started his
career in the National Football League at the guard position.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Most people thought he was going to be a center.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
He was involved in a center competition with Josh Myers,
but the Jets signed him in free agency. AVT goes
down before the season, they shift over Tipman to right guard.
Why has he been able to make that transition so well?
And also do you think that ultimately this is the
(02:52):
better position for him?
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Well, I think first of all, they I thought they
cross trained him, you know, even during the center competition.
He played guard in the pre season and he played well.
But I honestly think it's his better position because he
runs really well, and so the guard's got to be
able to move. You got to be able to stay
with the fast defensive tackles. You got to be able
to get to the second level, you know, and chase
(03:14):
linebackers in his business if you want to have, you know,
a successful running game, and I thought he demonstrated all
of that. I thought he pulled well. I thought he
got in space. They threw a screen to Breese Hall
out there and he was out there leading the charge.
It might be his best position, but regardless, right now
he's the right guard. So you can look ahead and say, okay,
is he a center of guard? But right now he's
(03:36):
their guard going forward and that's going to be his position.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
How impressive is that what Mambou did considering the assignment.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Everybody's talking about TJ.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Watt all week, and he's a great player and he's
going to make some plays.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
We know that.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
But Membo was one of the highest graded jets on
the entire team.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
I don't you know, I don't need anybody to give
me the scorecard. You just watch it. The guy's down
on the ground, he stays on his feet, he got
movement at the point of attack. You know, he never
looked like it was overwhelming. That's a great defensive front
that the Steelers have. They have a lot of talent there,
you know, whether it's Hayward or Benton or high Smith.
(04:18):
I mean, just go through the list of guys. It's
a talented group. They've put a lot of resources in there.
At one point, TJ was the highest paid defensive player
in the league a couple of weeks ago. But regardless,
I mean, it didn't look like it was too big
for him, and he went toe to toe and his
feet in his hands were really really good throughout the
entire day. He looked like he was having some fun
(04:40):
out there along the way as well.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
What do you make of the quarterback play. There's a
lot of people have seen Justin Fields throughout the years.
This is his third team, you know, we've talked a
lot about it, fourth offensive coordinator in five years. You
said Tenner Agstran had a great plan for his quarterback,
and I thought Fields responded, I mean, you're talking about
it guy. You know, completed sixteen to twenty two passes.
(05:03):
Heclaimed became the third quarterback in Jets history. Is one
pass touchdown and two rush touchdowns in the same game,
and the Jets scored on their first four possessions. Baldy, Yeah,
for the first time in a season opener going back
to nineteen ninety seven, and Aaron Glenn was part of
that team as a player.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Justin was great, He really was. You know, the touchdown
to Garrett Wilson, I mean, it's a deep cross with
Josh Reynolds and he saw it. He threw it to
the right guy. He threw him open. The coverage wasn't terrible,
but I mean this Darius Slay chasing, you know, Garrett
Wilson across the field and the throw, you know, beat
the coverage, you know, look the touchdown run off the
(05:46):
Reid option. I mean TJ. Wats waiting on him. He's
sitting right there like he knows what's coming, and Justin
ran right around him, you know, and turned the corner.
I mean, he was very impressive. His decision making was crisp,
his movement was good. The bass. Uh, there's very little.
There's very little to nippick about Justin fields an opening game.
(06:06):
But you know, he's anybody who's been around him and
I know, you know this offseason been around him. He
a He's a very serious student. He takes the game serious.
He wants to be great. And I thought Tanner coached
him up like that. I thought it was it was
It wasn't paint by numbers. He had to make reads,
he had to do some things. But that's a talented
group on that side of the ball, and they consistently
(06:27):
moved the football there. So, uh, you know, Justin Justin
passed the test. He was very very good in the game.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
He certainly did now what I typically like to do
here on the pod is set up the landscape for
this game. Yeah, Jets, tight loss where the offense played well,
the defense did some good things. I mean, listen, they
got Darreon Rodgers, they had four sacks.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
They took care of the run game. But some problems yep.
There were some problems in coverage.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
We know that Rogers had four touchdown passes and also
some penalties hurt as well, so there's certainly some things
to clean up. On the other side, you're talking about
a Buffalo Bills team who made a historic comeback against
the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter, but they had
problems themselves defensively.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
But Josh Allen just took it to another level.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
He did.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
I mean, you know, you got two MVPs going out
in Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. It was it was
great theater. It was prime time and they were both
up to it. You know, the one thing about Josh
right now is you have to get you have to
take the ball away from them because he's playing with
such swagger. Like his touchdown passed at Dalton Kincaid. I mean,
(07:48):
it's had a cover two. Look, you got Kyle Hamilton
and Malachi start standing on the goal line. Like most
quarterbacks wouldn't attempt that throw. You're thrown right into the
teeth of the dog. And he did and he completed
it was a great throw. And he did the same
thing at the end of the game against Nate Wiggins,
like he trust his receivers to go get it. He
trusts Kean Coleman. But when he sees it and he
(08:11):
rips it, he's not second guessing himself. It is unbelievable
confidence that he played with. And then you know, obviously
the offensive line is very good. They protect him well,
but his movement is good. I mean, it's a good group.
The offensive line is now starting the same five starters
now for either the second or third year in a row,
(08:32):
and so they've got a lot of continuity upfront.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
All right, Before we dive into the matchups, what do
you make of the spot here for both teams? The
Jets coming off the close loss by two points.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Chris Boswell nails a sixty yard field goal, but they're
at home.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
This is the first game in division play under Aaron Glenn. Conversely,
the Bills have dominated the division the last five years.
They were going on the road after you know, I'm
a miraculous win.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Well, it's you know, I mean it's early, but it's
a statement game. Both teams played very well, you know,
offensively in the opener, and and everybody is cautiously optimistic
coming out of training camp. But you know, for some
teams like September, you know, August Septembers to New August,
like they're just trying to figure out what they have.
The Jets came out and played well, and they ran
the ball great, and so you know, Buffalo gave up
(09:22):
two hundred and thirty eight yards rushing. I mean that's
Dereck Henry and Lamar Jackson. Is a different type of
running game. But still, you know, I think the Jets
can run the ball against Buffalo. There linebackers are undersize,
they have great speed. Matt Malin was a great player,
but he's two hundred and twenty pounds, Like you got
to make him pay a little bit. And so I
think they have questions at corners. Christian Benfort is probably
(09:44):
their number one corner right now, and that was a
sixth round pick out of Villanova. Like, I think that
if you can protect them and they're gonna blitch you
They're gonna pressure in different ways. They're gonna play their
their coverage where they basically play this umbrella and try
and keep everything underneath them. Which that's fine, that's kind
of what they have been doing. But I think there's
all kinds of cracks in this defense with Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Well, let's take a quick break and we're going to
dive into that. The Jets offense versus the Bills defense
Sunday at MetLife Stadium. It's an AFC showdown be at
MetLife Stadium as your New York Jets taking the Buffalo
Bills on Sunday, September fourteenth at one pm, presented by
Visa and Cash app. Get your seats now at on
(10:28):
why Jets dot com slash tickets. All right, Baldy, what
do you expect as far as angstrand against the Bills
defense a week two?
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Well, you kind of know what they are. I mean,
there were four men in front or zone team. All right.
They're very they're very fast flowing. I always feel like
if you want to have success running the ball against Buffalo,
you got to run right out of them, you know,
they always have and try to create an unblocked player
at the second level and if you don't get you know,
(11:01):
their Karen Johnson block. He'll make every tackle in the
you know, in the nickel. He's very talented. He is
as good as there is in this league right now.
So I always feel like you running at him is
the best method. So power inside runs power, you know,
pulling your Simpson pulling, you know, tipman with some power
right there. Uh, tight end's got to continue to block
well in the edge. But you know, Brince Hall didn't
(11:23):
miss a hole the other day, like he vision.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Was violent too.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
He ran violent too, He ran violent.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
But his from the very first run of a game
where he went off off left tackle for seventeen or
eighteen yards like he he was patient to the hole
and then he exploded through it. That's encouraging. And then
Braydon Allen is a beast. Like I think the formations
they have with both backs who's going to get it
kind of keep you guessing a little bit. I think,
(11:52):
you know, they got some success with that. Obviously, Justin
fields is a part of the run game, you know,
and so just the way Lamar Jack, there's runs there
for Justin and then there's you know, just like Lamar.
If the pass isn't there, his ability to take it
down and make good decisions with the ball running it
are paramount. But I think there's real questions at safety
(12:15):
for Buffalo, whether it's tackling or whether it's in past defense.
I think there's question marks at the safety position, and
so I think, you know, you got to find a
way to go test those guys and test that secondary.
Like I wouldn't just say just because they're sitting back
there in the zones playing these umbrella coverages that you
can't attack them. I think you can attack them. He's
got to hold up up front. Greg Russeau is a
(12:37):
good players, not TJ Watt, but he's a good player, yeah,
you know, and you know they got Joey Bosa over
there now, and Joey's not the guy that he used
to be, but he gotta respect Joey like he's a
real pro. And so he started for him opposite Greg Russou.
So I mean, protect your edges like you did last
week and run right at them, and I think there's
a lot of success. I think the way that Tanner
(13:00):
txt with his tight ends and motions and movements, I
think we'll see more of that this week.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Man.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
I love this speak of question marks though. Do we
have Bart's got back?
Speaker 6 (13:10):
Listen technology, Man, listen, this is the same exact thing
that I used last week.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
I tell you, here's where I want you to start. Park.
How impressed were you with what Tanner Instrom did offensively
with formations, motion, motions, movement. I thought it was really impressive.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
That's good. That's good, Baldy. But I also want you
to take it forward here to the Bills game.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
I would take it forward, we go back to the future,
and we bring it forward because you talked about what
he did is and also I thought that it was
a lot to be learned about how the Ravens use
Lamar Jackson in their run game with a lot of
those jet motions. I would love to see them in
some of those jet motions with maybe their speechster coming
in motions and grab the eyes as you pull guys
(13:58):
like Rutgers back and run basically quarterback powers to the
open side, the short side of the field where it's
less numbers.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
As you tilt the defense.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
So I thought it was a lot to be learned
from what the Ravens did last week as well, because
you have a more powerful, stronger runner and and justin fields,
especially when you have those gotta habit moments, you know.
So I was very impressed with what he did. Is now,
how do you grow those packages?
Speaker 1 (14:23):
You know?
Speaker 6 (14:24):
I thought that the double speedo where you know, Garrett
Wilson called he touched down, you know, it's basically a
mid level pit by the guys they grabbed they and
it's weird. Why if you're safety, why wouldn't you grab
the double the speedo from Garrett Wilson's side. They decided
to grab it from the other side, made right and
(14:44):
he made the right read and he threw it right
into the basket.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
And you love those type of things.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
And then Brees Hall just seemed so explosive coming out
the whole.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
He seemed fresh.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
Y'all hope they can keep him healthy because if we
get that breeze Hall, it's going to be a problem.
And I love when they went with the pony package.
I thought, I thought one of the things where he
has to think on the backside when he decided to
go for the run with Braylan Allen at the bottom.
When you do that as a defender, I want to
pin my ears back because I know he's the he's
the run downhill guy. So if you put a guy
(15:15):
like Breis Haller, even Isaiah Davison, then it makes me
think that this could be a pass. I have to
honor my keys, but when I see Braylen Allen back
there to proven otherwise I'm coming downhill first step.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
The other indicator here for Buffalo, and I know you
watched this part is honestly, it was almost this simple
when Buffalo played there. I mean when Baltimore played, they're
too safety when I say too high, and they were
too high. It was a run when they were single
all right, they were thrown at his A Flowers all right,
(15:48):
they were hitting them, they're hitting their receivers. It almost
looked like it was just that easy. And then to
Mart's point, with a lot of the ghost motions and
fly sweep motions that they had, that's when Lamar took off.
That's when he scored on his ten yard run in
his dash, and so honestly, it looked like it was
almost a safety game with how they attacked Buffalo's defense.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Last well, yeah, I can't.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Garrett Wilson bees A Flowers this week for the Yests
when you look at this matchup. And the other thing is,
you know, when we look at areas of weakness or
maybe a question mark, we should say Rap and Bishop
had tough games against the Ravens.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Tough tackling and tough covering both. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:31):
Well, well when you when you get ran over a
couple of times and stiff on to the ground, you
start coursing everything.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
About your life and your manhood.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Yeah, and I think I think I think Braylan Allen
can create that same type of fear and intimidation coming downhill.
Your first one, straight ahead, no fair dodge, like, ain't
no moves when you come.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
Through the whole, we're looking for contact to send that message.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
Well to that point part that eight yard touchdown run
by Braylan Allen right up the middle. Like I was
telling EA, I always think Buffalo is a fast flowing defense.
The runnersize like I like running right at Buffalo and
Braylen Allen's touchdown run last week. I mean, okay, let's
get to the second level, let's put a hat on
those linebackers, let's take care of them down men. And
(17:13):
that was impressive that you know, you when you can
run inside the ten yard line for touchdowns. Every offensive
cording in the league will say, the hell with the pass,
this is what we want to do. Bad things happen
when you throw it into quarters coverage and the things
you can do in the goal line when you could
run it. That's always a good Offens's first option.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
I mean, and you take it, you know if answer,
I want to go back to what you know they
used to do with the Lions. I mean, I'm taking
tackle pulls. I am trapping ed Allary he's there. Yeah,
so traps, wos and whams. I got fullbacks coming in.
I'm letting go the ear hold them. He's not gonna
know where it's gonna go. A lot of times I'm
(17:54):
not gonna block them. And then I'm gonna run the
option off of him, right. I don't run the option
off the edge, guys, I run the opps off of
him right that way, I get a hat on the
hat so I get to the sideline. And once you
wham him a couple of times and you send those
fake short motions and you take those jets sweeps, he's
going to start hesitating and not just firing off, especially
when he's not blocked. So sometimes you can do that
(18:16):
instill an extra guy at the second level because you
don't block him and you run away from him.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
He's like, where's the wham coming?
Speaker 6 (18:22):
And it's actually just a just stretch play to the
opposite side of him. So now you change the math
because basically you playing eleven or ten because you're not
blocking a guy. A lot of times they let the
backside guy so he can't just crash down.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
But you know, if you just don't let.
Speaker 6 (18:36):
Him come through and you don't block him the end
and you block him, you can get Breefs, or you
can get Isaiah Davis, or you can get Alan to
the run away.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
So what's the bill's calendar here?
Speaker 1 (18:46):
They give up two hundred and thirty eight yards in
the ground, Like we're talking about more than eight yards
per carry. I mean, that Baltimore run game is terrific.
But the Jets sure have the look of a terrific
run game themselves. But you guys are talking about it.
These guys are a little bit different. They're they're different, right,
So what's Buffalo's counter when they're looking at this first Well,
(19:07):
I mean, the first.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
Thing, the first thing, coach, you're going to tell these guys,
you got to tackle better. I mean, they just didn't
get Derrick Henry or Lamard to the ground, but uh,
you know, they got to tackle better when they have
a chance. It wasn't just like there was this big
lanes for Derrick Henry to run through. They became big
when he got into the secondary. But you know, I
mean at the line of scrimmage, they got to get
off blocks and tackle. I mean that's so that's that's
(19:31):
that happens a lot in Week one. Nobody's really tackled
and so you know, you like you go and you
look at that film, you're like, Okay, this is an opportunity.
Instead of Derek Henry going for fifty, we could have
tackled him for six and we could have saved a
lot of those yards.
Speaker 6 (19:45):
And for the Jets, they can't get frustrated because they're
gonna be jacked up on Mountain dew early. You know,
they're they're gonna be able to maybe get briefed down
and get allan down. But you know, those things were
on you. As you saw they got Henry a couple
of times, and you just stay consistent with it and
eventually what you're doing is creating body blows for later
in the game where they don't want it anymore. I thought,
you know, thirty nine was good, but I think forty
(20:07):
is better. I think they should have forty rush attempts.
You have to earn the right to get to that.
That means you have to win on first and second down,
so that you have the opposet.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
You know, you have options.
Speaker 6 (20:17):
You got your whole menu for a second down, so
then third is manageable if you don't pick up on
second down.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Well.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
One of the reasons, though, one of the reasons why
they got to thirty nine runs is they did a
great job at the point of attack. They got real movement,
especially less on the line of the Steelers. When you
get movement like that, and that means you're coming off
the ball, and it's not a finesse offense. It's not
a finesse running game. It's not zone stretch. I mean,
it is real power football when you're moving big bodies
(20:46):
like they did. And if I'm Buffalo, I'm worried about
the way this Jets came off the ball in that game.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
The Jets have always been the throwing in their side
of recent years, They've always played the Buffalo Bills very
very well. Let's see if this new regime has a
feel for what the Bills like to do. We know
the players do, but you know, the coaching in the
scheme has to match. Because Salah had a good beat
on him, and that's why it was always a difficult matchup,
no matter what the records were.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
All right before we flip it to the other side
of the ball and look at the matchup of the
Jets defense versus this prolific Bills attack. Bart gotta get
your thoughts on fields. We talked to Baldy about it
a little bit. He had some really impressive throws during
that game. You mentioned the speedle the deep crosser there
to Wilson. I mean, the placement on that was beautiful
(21:34):
because if the arc is down a little bit, maybe
that ball's intercepted, or like the throw to Tyler Johnson
over the middle where the pocket starts collapsing and he
steps up and then squares the shoulders and things like that.
So he just seemed to be a command for sixty minutes.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Yeah, his mechanics was good too, you know what I mean,
And he had his feet underneath him. He wasn't and
I think the ones that were more oppressive to me
was the first throw to Brie, you know, right in
between the defender Brief snatched it naturally. And also to
throw the Rutger, you know, I mean the threat to
need to that way and you know, you know, to
see Rutger come like to life because he has a
quarterback that believes in him, because he's been with him
(22:15):
for a long time, to give them to give him
those opportunities, and he did nothing to warrn that you
don't get those more opportunities because he made the plays right,
he made the tough catches, and you know.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Eventually Mason Taylor would get more involved, you know.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
So I was really impressed with his poise, you know,
and also his eyes remaining up when he was scrambling,
not just looking to run.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
All right, let's take a break and then I'm gonna
flip it into the other side of vault. An NFL

year felt like they were scoring thirty points a game,
and I think they were so opening week they score
forty one against Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Defensive game plan.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
How do you slow down album?
Speaker 5 (23:33):
Well, one, you have to contain him in the pocket.
Speaker 6 (23:35):
You know, I thought the Ravens at times did a
good job and kind of stirring the pot running time
games and me games and things of that sort.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
But you also have to understand what he's trying to do.
Speaker 6 (23:44):
You have to understand what I didn't agree, Like when
you look at the big play that the that the
they had against the Ravens at a pivotal time to Coleman,
whenever he has these snug routs, you know this is
a rhythm timing type of offense. You got to press
the point at the bottom. Marlin Humphreys, who believes in itself,
challenged itself and jam the point, which threw the timing off,
which gives the pass rush the opportunity.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
To get there.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
And on the top Zaia, Alexander and the other corner
decided to play off.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
You can't let Coleman build that steam up.
Speaker 6 (24:12):
He's like Gronkowski if you let that big body run
with ten yards with two way goals. You have to
make sure that you challenge these guys at the point
of attack because they aren't great guys and getting off
the press, so you have to throw the rhythm out.
But you have to challenge yourself and understand that you
got safety hip over the top. This is going to
be a safety's game because there's no everybody knows that.
You know, it's about their tight ends, even if the
(24:34):
third string tight end as well. It was the pivotal
almost want of the nails of the coffin for the ravens.
And whenever you get to three by one rather it's
motion or rather it's aligned, you know you're getting the
banana route, especially if they see too high. You have
to understand that, you have to anticipate that, you have
to know where the ball is going.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Well.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
I mean when the Jets have had success against Buffalo,
they've taken the ball away, they've gotten the Josh, they've
gotten the ball on the ground, you know. And so
that was the difference in the game last week was
the one turnover. These games were decided by a turnover.
You got to take care of the ball and if
you could get one or two extra possessions, whether it's
Josh len the ball on the ground or tip ball
(25:15):
or anything else like that, where you're hitting them like
they hit Aaron Rodgers hard last week. I mean they
I was surprised at how he got up from some
of those hits, like Quinnin hit on him and Jermaine
hit on him, Like you know, you've got to get
to Josh. And so like Janna Dawkins is gonna take
Will McDonald, you know, remove him from the line of scrimming.
(25:35):
He's gonna get him out there like an extra yard
wide like Deon likes to do. And he's gonna put
him in a phone booth. And Will has the ability
to beat Dion Dawkins. He just does. He beat a
good tackle. Last week, he brought her Jones a couple
of times, like if Dion wants to play that game
with him and he doesn't do it against everybody. But
you'll know right away if he starts walking away from
his left guard, he's like, I got this guy. I'm
(25:57):
gonna wire him up, and so make it pay to
do that because it's it's not nobody else does it
in the league like that, And that's the blind side
to Josh Allen. You got to get the ball on
the ground a couple of times Quinny got the ball
on the ground last week once they didn't recover, you know,
like they got to get the ball on the ground
in this game.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
Yeah, you got to make the places when they come.
Last week, you know, Stevens had an opportunity to end
the game. You know if he makes that interception, and
you have to understand, you know, possessions are important in
this game and whenever you can still want it gives
you an opportunity. It's the little things, right, Because the
Buffalo Bills aren't going to go away no matter what
the lead is because they believe in their quarterback. Hell
of what they did last week with two hundred and
(26:36):
twenty five yards, you know that they're going to have belief.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
For the rest of the year. That's something that amplifies that.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
So you have to make sure that even if you're ahead,
you can't let your foot off the gas because you
can't give them opportunities to get back in the game.
When you have them down, you have to keep them down.
If you're behind, you have to choke them out.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
You know.
Speaker 6 (26:51):
I was really impressed with this defensive line. Like I said,
that's my guy's name. I call him juicy. People to him, I.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
Can't call it grom. Yeah, he's juicy.
Speaker 6 (27:00):
He reminds me of like I said, it reminds me
my old teammate marqu He's does it.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
He just.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
Got a lot of little got a lot of little
wiggle to him, a little fighter in there, you know,
a little pistol star.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
So you know, I thought they had.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
A good rotation part Yeah, I thought they had a
good eight man rotation up front kept him fresh and uh,
I thought, you know, he kept him going through the
whole game.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
But you know, hey, I gotta I gotta interrupt real quick. Look,
we have a voice mail. We got a question from
a fan that I want to get in here before
he departs.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
Katie rolled that in audi from Brooklyn.
Speaker 7 (27:35):
How a want you, guys, So I want to know
how our coach, good coach, hopefully a great coach, no
defense and allows Pittsburgh to score in the red zone three.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
Out of three and so easy.
Speaker 7 (27:53):
It's like, guys were wide open.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
They were playing zone. I mean, they were playing man.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
The man and they obviously had plans for that.
Speaker 7 (28:02):
So maybe after the second time they squach couldn't take
play zone.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
All right, Okay, I hear all right? Think Mark, So
what happened on the scronic touchdown? Like, where's the breakdown?
It's a it's a crow. I mean it's across from
the slot.
Speaker 6 (28:17):
Where they have they have they have one in front,
one behind, and you know the front guy.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
You have to when you have this.
Speaker 6 (28:23):
Type of boot action, usually the backside, the front side
linebacker or the backside linebacker is the one who speed
turns and climbs high right. The front side linebacker, you know,
the backside line you lose in the play action. So
you give him a pass and you know so that
that has to be picked up by our safety.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
Safety has to come down and grab that one.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
So it's about communication and understanding how you're going to
take to take these overalls.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
You know, that's basically what we used to call the
old school strike pass.
Speaker 6 (28:48):
It used to be basically the full back, you fake
it to the tailback and the full back comes down
act like he's going to block the lead block and
he avoids him. And then on the other one we
call it the woody boot. And the key is like
when you have the offset running back. The key is
when you have a snug place. They're basically running legal
pick play. They run slashed byt of two outside receivers.
So the only way you need to stop that. And
(29:10):
I've been trying to get to Aaron Glenn and trying
to get the curry because this is something that we
ran into a lot of times when we went against
LT and we went against Reggie Bush, because it's basically
a sprint pass with you know, it's a foot race.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
Between the inside linebackers lining up over the guard.
Speaker 6 (29:23):
Meanwhile, yeah, he's already flanked out because if the wall
runs away, he can't be so far wide trying to
match the the the alignment with the running back because
if he goes the other way, the center or somebody
be able to scoop up to him and cut him off.
So they'll be able to split the defense. So the
only way you can do that, and the Jets have
the perfect personnel to do that. They have McDonald and
(29:46):
they have Jermaine Johnson, who's basically outside linebackers.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
So what you do is we used to call peel
and peel men's.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Bart, real quick ball, he's dropping out. Okay, good stuff,
teammate to get this right.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
Way to hand the put on off to me.
Speaker 6 (30:02):
Baldy got off the black slope, but I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
Hey, Bart, listen, I just want you to finish strong today. Okay,
I'll finished strong here today, all.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Right, start now, we got the clothes, get out of here, Baldy,
all see you guys.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
All right? Uh so, so I'll fin I'll finish on
that point.
Speaker 6 (30:22):
So what it is is right, you're out flank, because
they do that on purpose. They make they bring two
snug receivers in tight they run slats and then they
know that cornerbacks don't exchange routes, especially a man the
man with the linebacker.
Speaker 5 (30:36):
So linebackers by.
Speaker 6 (30:37):
Itself, so the only thing you can do is work
a call with your outside pass rush. And we used
to call it peel, which means if this guy flares one,
if you're going to keep rushing, you have to make
him cut inside of you right, so that means you
climb high. And if he's if he's changing his angle,
you run outside or we run. We start.
Speaker 5 (30:55):
We call it Frisco. Frisco. Frisco Man. Calvin used to
do it all the time, Frisco.
Speaker 6 (31:00):
Once that guy flairs, then Calvin, you take him because
he's the only receiver. The guy's running the slants aren't
expecting to get the ball. They just running legal picks.
And then me as an inside linebacker, instead of trying
to take him on the flare route, I take cal
I replace Calvin in his rush, knowing that once the
quarterback seas that Calvin picks him up because he's outflanked
because he's outside. As the guys trying to run to
(31:23):
the polo, Calvin's there, it's easy to take him.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
I take the rush and I'm able to get to
the quarterback.
Speaker 6 (31:28):
So usually the quarterback either had to just throw the
ball chuck and duck, or he had to just eat
a sack.
Speaker 5 (31:33):
But you have to have this communication post snap, and.
Speaker 6 (31:35):
It happens only when you have snug receivers because you
know you're gonna run aso trash and it's a foot
race and all they have to do is get in
your way. But not all, not all defensive coordinators have
that tool in there because we played with Rex and
we used to that was the new that was a
new thing. They used to run slants and swing routes
with LT and Reggie Bush. So you can never get
(31:56):
through that trash. So what we started doing is taking
our off side lineback, which is basically our DM.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
But stand him up.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
And then he can just easily take that because the
guy has to come to him because he's already outside
of him. He's already out flank, so he can't beat
him outside. And remember you don't have to be a
great pass cover, but just because you're out flank and
Jermaine Thompson can run and McDonald can run, and once
you see that, we gonna get the sack because it's
only a one man route.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Yeah, well, you know already was talking about personnel there man, listen,
it's weak one and Stevens, I'm telling you Stevens did
he had a really good training camp.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Well, it follows him from Baltimore, right, he was playing
a former divisional opponent that knew him very well. I
knew that the inside fad was coming. I knew that
they were going to target him. Sauce was playing at
such a high level. And this is something that Carmarty
had to learn. This is something that samari Row had
to learn. The loneliest place is opposite a respected lockdown corner.
(33:01):
You're going to get tested and even and Dj Reed
had to realize this as well.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
And Dj stepped up to the task.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
So like when you talk about it and you talk
about penalties, which Aaron Glenn talked about, when you talk about,
you know, not performing to a standard, everybody job is
always up. Every week is an audition and we're all listen.
When I was there, the Mario Davis was on my
heels this competition and that that brings the best out everybody.
So one game, two games, you know, everybody has to
(33:30):
be ready. I mean, in this time, we're talking about
Jackson Dark playing for Russell Wilson week one.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
Right, That's just that's just the nature of the of
the business.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
Because in the NFL, one game, this isn't basketball, this
isn't baseball.
Speaker 5 (33:44):
One game means a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
All right, let's speak to a couple of superlatives.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
You just mentioned saw us, how good was he against
Mitt Caffey travel with them the vast majority of the game.
And then we're talking about this matchup with the Bills.
The Bills don't have a prototypical one. But do you
think you think just from a body type standpoint and
the way this kid's developing for Buffalo that Keane Coleman
(34:08):
was would be the natural uh fit for Sauce in
this one.
Speaker 5 (34:13):
Yeah, but I can play left and right, you know
what I mean?
Speaker 6 (34:15):
Because Stevens he shouldn't have He doesn't have problems against
these type of guys.
Speaker 5 (34:19):
Right, He's a big, physical cornerback.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
So this is Stevens might mean Stevens might be even
a better matchup because he's a little stronger than Sauce. Right, So,
and then so Sauce can go and get the Elijah
Moores of the world or I don't know the other
receivers you're offhand from them. But you know this is
this is maybe a Ed Oliver, I mean Isaiah Oliver
type of game because he he's a guy. Because when
(34:44):
you have a safety, that also is your backup nickel nickel.
If he's your backup nickel, that means you trust him
against receivers, so you damn sure trust him against tight ends.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
Right.
Speaker 6 (34:54):
So this is a maybe what we used to call
big sub where we would takeout whill you maybe take
your second best guy out. You know, your second best
linebacker comes out and then the big sub guy used
to come in. It used to be smitty at times
when I was young, I was a big nigga. They
would take out a big linebacker. But you know, you
(35:15):
bring in a safety type.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
You know this. You see the Ravens do it a
lot of times with Kyle Hamilton. You insert him there.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Then now you have somebody that can help against the run,
but somebody who can run with Kim Kate and be
able to make it difficult for him to get off
the line of scrimmage because he's gonna be the go
to guy, especially whenever they get to three by one.
It's going up the rail shot, banana shot, you know
what I mean. Every day of the week, and twice
on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
I was really encouraged by Jermaine Johnson. He comes back.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
He played the vast majority of snaps. You know, and
it's gonna be interesting match up there because Quinnin was
phenomenal in week one and he can give the Bills
a lot of problems on the interior.
Speaker 6 (35:52):
Absolutely, he can be super active, right and you know,
if they shut down Cooks is gonna be a challenge
because Deion Dawkins.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
And then you know, we have to be able to
attack Spencer.
Speaker 6 (36:01):
We have to say that Jermaine Johnson is much better
than right, so we got to be able to make
it a difficult day for him. I thought the Ravens
let him off the hook a couple of times. He
got a couple of fake muscleman shots with his neck roll.
He was able to get a couple of plays on
the Ravens. But I mean that should be a dominating
game for you know, setting the edge but also being
able to keep Josh Allen the phone, both because he
(36:22):
should make you know, life miserable for Spencer Brown. On
the other side, McDonald with all his movement and his
ability to spend and come up the field with speed rush.
But also I saw a little power you know against
Roger Jones when he got the sack, shows me that
he put a little time in the weight rooms, eat
some protein shakes.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
Maybe you gave him your workout playing and.
Speaker 6 (36:40):
He got him up to snuff, you know, but you
know he was able to really your cause havoc. So
understanding that, you know, especially if he's next to Quinny,
you know it's going to be a lonely day because
you know it's going to put Dawkins on that island,
opposed to if you have, if you, if you, if
you put you know somebody else over there, they may,
you know, try and help a little bit.
Speaker 1 (37:00):
I mean, the secrets out I will McDonald. I mean
people don't know it by now. This guy is outstanding.
He gave Dean Dawkins problems last year and he opens
opens the season with two sacks. So, uh, give me
a number of points as we get.
Speaker 5 (37:15):
Out of here.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
How many points do you think the Jets have to
score this week?
Speaker 6 (37:21):
It's gotta be a minimum of twenty four, even to
me and whatever we talk about, it's got to be a.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Minimum of twenty four.
Speaker 6 (37:27):
You can, we can kind of, you know, salt the
game away by running the football and making sure we
limit the possessions. But you know, we gotta get we
gotta get seven in the red zone and not and
not get field goals. We gotta be able to we
we gotta be able to execute it on defensively as well,
you know, to keep them out of the A zone.
But twenty four by minimum more likely to win the
(37:48):
probably twenty seven twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
All right, brother, Well it's good SENI you finally joined
us late.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
It's better than never.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
Yeah, I don't know what happened, man like time.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
For my that's your point. Listen, the Jets did a
ton of good things in Week one.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
We know that.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Most notably you look at that offensive line that were
dominated at the line of scrimmage, that were pushing the
Steelers back more than one hundred and eighty yards on
the ground. Justin Fields was phenomenal, so poised in the pocket,
also using his legs as well picking up yards.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
On the ground.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
They have a dynamic round game in the makings here
with Fields at quarterback and then those backs led by
Breise Hall who got a sixth one hundred yard rushing
game on the other side of the ball. Of course,
the Jets have some things to clean up, but I
love what I saw up front at that front four.
Jermaine Johnson back in the lineup. Will McDonald had two sacks,
(38:45):
Quinn Williams was outstanding. Okay, so that was Week one,
but we are on to week two and.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Styles make fights.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
The Jets have to come out and get after Josh
Allen company. Got to win on both sides of the
line of scrimmage and hopefully you are even or plus
in the turnover department. This is gonna be a tough game,
but it's going to be a crazy atmosphere at MetLife Stadium.
(39:15):
And what we saw in Week one, while there are
no moral victories, is if the Jets play like that
and fix a couple things, they can beat the Bills
and they can beat a lot of teams this year.
But they're gonna need you at MetLife to make that
place crazy on Sunday. For Josh Allen, it's gonna be
(39:36):
a well of a matchup. We're looking forward to it.
We'll see you next week.
