Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to another edition of jet Stream. And
you know it's a special edition because your host right here,
Janey Coakley, coming from life from over the Pond, from London,
across the Pond. I think it's across the pond. I'm
tired whatever, and also joined by Marty Lyons, Jets legend.
(00:22):
You know, I love to introduce you as the Ring
of Honor Guy Walter Paytonman of the Year guy, one
of my favorite people.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Marty. How are you doing over there in New York?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
You know what, Jenay, I'm doing pretty good. But it's
raining out here on Long Island, so it's gonna be
a soggy day here.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
It's overcast here in London, but I'm in London, so
I'm gonna have some tea and have some scones and uh,
clotted cheese and call it a day.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Clotted cream.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Sorry, how about some fish and chips too?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Oh we could have that too, We have too. What
have you been up to? How's everything, Marty?
Speaker 4 (01:01):
What was that? Jenny?
Speaker 2 (01:02):
I said, how's everything? How was your weekend? Oh?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Everything's good? You know.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Kind of disappointed that the Jets didn't get their first win,
but once again they hurt themselves by fumbling, and you know,
nothing good comes when you have to play from behind.
You know, you're exposing your quarterback. They allowed five sacks
to Dallas and you know, just turned out to be
a pretty ugly game.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
In the end, the Jets made a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Of a push there in the fourth quarter, showing that
they they weren't going to quit.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
They had great effort, but you got to start taking
effort and translating that into wins.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
I will tell you this, though, I was excited.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
I got to run into like literally got to run
into at the game on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, that was always exciting, and it's exciting to go
down there and see the uh the familiar faces and
for me, you know, going up and seeing everybody in
this hospitality suites.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
And those people were so nice.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
To go up there and really thank them all part
of the organization and the Jets and you know, Woody
Johnson everything, and let them know how much we appreciate
them coming in supporting the Jets, and you know, man
for man, they completely understand that, you know, AG's trying
to change the culture there and it's going to take
a while. That everybody's a little frustrated, but you know
(02:25):
it's a process, and the process is not going to
happen overnight. And you know, they're going up against the
Denver Bronco team that went down to Phillying came away
with a big victory. And when you're able to score,
they score seventeen eighteen points in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
You know, Sean Payton's got that team rolling.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
I just we just had I'm just I'm here at
the Jets practice here in London and ag actually just
talked and they came out early. They came what we
got here float Monday night, got here Tuesday and he
says he's kind of glad just to be away from everything,
like the team is together all week with each other
as being part of a team or and how important
(03:07):
is that to bond and be together, especially when you
are oh and five.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, you know, it's like being in the fox hole.
You want to be there with your your best friends.
Do you want to be there with somebody that has
your back end? You know, at oh to five to
get away from the United States, to go to London
where the fans that do go over there are going
to be the loyal Jet fans, and uh, you know,
you look around the room and you know you have
(03:34):
nothing but your teammates, but you still have to go
out there and play. Because Denver's the same way. Denver's
coming off in all time high beating the Eagles, giving
the Eagles their first loss. Do they have a little
bit of a hangover? Are they patting themselves on the
back again, going hey, you know what, we just knocked
off an undefeated team, a team that won the Super Bowl?
(03:56):
Do you catch Denver at the right time? But the
big thing is you to quit hurting yourself again. Ten
penalties last week against Stallers, he allowed Prescott to throw
for four touchdown passes. The communication in the secondary has
to be better.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So do you want to we talk about this, We
talk about the penalties and it's all discipline.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
How do you fix it?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Well, I think every individual needs to look at himself
in the mirror. You know, this is not an ag problem.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
It's happened like for three straight weeks. You know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Well, yeah, I know what you're saying, but you know,
and especially they have five pre snap penalties.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
That's not good.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
But I would say that the players have to hold
themselves accountable. You know, AG can't keep getting up at
the press conference and saying, you know, we're going to
get better. This is a process, this is and that
because you know, I'm sure that the coaches are given
one hundred percent every week, getting them prepared, getting the
game plan out there, making sure that they're going to execute.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
And then as soon as they run out there.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
On the field opening drive, they're moving the ball down
the field, what happens a fumble and then that fumble
deflates everybody.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
All right, I have to I'm switching gears a little
bit because I'm in London. Have you ever been to London?
Speaker 4 (05:17):
I have.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
I was over there when the Jets played, and then
I went from London over to Paris and spend another
week over there.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Oh what year was it the Jets first time they
came over here? In twenty fifteen?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
I believe it was. I believe it was the time.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
What was your favorite part about that that trip?
Speaker 3 (05:38):
You know, I think the fans, because they think the
fans are you know, they're more into football in their
world at soccer. Yeah, you know what, they stand up
and they'll sing the whole game, and you know, they're loud.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
And it's just a great atmosphere.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
It's a great atmosphere for the players to experience that
opportunity to go over there, and you know, again, it'd
be nice to come back with a victory. And then
you get ready to play Carolina and then you go
out to Cincinnati. But you know, you've got to start
putting together some wins here just to feel better about
who you are and better as an organization, and better
(06:19):
with buying into AG's plant. Right now, AG is preaching, preaching, preaching,
but they're not getting the results. Once you start getting
the results, then you buy into it a little bit more,
and you know, I know it's going to take some time,
but I have confidence in AG. I think that he's
he's going to turn this thing around. It's not going
(06:40):
to happen overnight. We're seeing the results right now at
zero to five. And you know, justin fields is you know,
anytime that you have to play from behind and you
have a quarterback throwing forty six times, that's not good.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Did you ever take a tack the over here?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I think I did public transfer rotation, taking the train
to the.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Two, the two the underground. Yes, did you go sight
see were you guys with Bob was at the radio?
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Guys?
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Were all you guys over?
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (07:11):
We were over there and then uh I believe that.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
You know, we had a nice little dinner.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Uh you know, Woodie Johnson took us over to one
of the big palaces or castles and everything.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Wait wait, wait, wait wait what how come I've never
heard this before.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Because you weren't with the Jets back then?
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Right, Yeah, what I was, thank you very much.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
So we didn't invite you that so I.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Was not invited. Wait so wait you went to a castle,
I believe.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
So yeah, what did you do? Then?
Speaker 3 (07:45):
The invitation underneath my door at the hotel? And you
didn't get one?
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
I did not.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
It was new was my first years okay, my bad
Actually wasn't one of our first years, but that's a
different story.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
That's cool. So what did you guys? What'd you guys eat?
Do you remember?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I remember the food, which was excellent, But I don't
know which castle it was, you know, maybe it was
the embassy.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
I don't. I don't remember.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Were you did you take a double decker bus?
Speaker 4 (08:16):
I did.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I got on the we were on the top of
the bus so that we could sight see.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Really, who'd you go with?
Speaker 3 (08:24):
I went with Mike Eltierry and his wife, and Mike
Ryan and his wife from Landtech, and there was and
then my son Rocky and his wife Lindsay came over,
so there was eight of us.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
And then we went from London over to uh Paris.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Oh, that is awesome. I'm excited to go.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
I like the red double decker buses and I like
the red phone booths and then changing up the guards
at Buckingham Palace.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Have you done that?
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Yeah? That was nice too, yea.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
As far as the stadium, how cool is it that stadium? Well,
it was wimbley. You must have been wimbley, right, have
you ever been to Tottenham Stadium?
Speaker 4 (09:07):
You know what? Today? I'm not sure.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
I got hit in the head a few times.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
No, twenty fifteen was wimbley, which was awesome. Like that
stadium was so cool, isn't it cool? Like you said,
to see the fans they like all they just love
the game of football though for every team.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
That's just the coolest part, right.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
It's so weird, you know what.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
And the mass trance of you know, there was more
NFL jerseys from around the league, you know, from teams
that had been there where they sell.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
The jerseys, they buy the jersey.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
You know, it's not just the Jets, not just Denver,
it's the whole environment for the NFL. And it will
be an experience for the players that if this is
their first time over there, they're going to enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
I was gonna say, what would you say to this
team right now? I mean, besides being er to five,
is this experience of going over a young guy sometimes
some of these guys this is their first international trip.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Well, the first thing I tell them is, you know what,
we can't worry about the record.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
No, don't forget the record. Let's just go out there
and play.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
And the second thing is I would tell them that,
you know, let's have some fun. You got to play
this game with passion. You got to play this game
with the desire to win. And when you are winning,
it becomes doesn't become work anymore. It becomes you know,
you're starting to have fun. It becomes you take that
(10:37):
passion that you have for the game and you go
out there and you execute better, you come up with
big plays. And I mean that's what all the players
in the locker room have to be saying to themselves, now,
who's going to come up with the big play? And
if they're looking at themselves in the mirror, they got
to go, I am I'm going to make the big sack.
I'm going to come up with the big turnover. Again,
(11:00):
eight giveaway takeaways. That's not good either. So they've got
to come up with a strategy that every player plays
the best that they can possibly play, and then put
it all together as a unit. The defense place well,
the offense plays well. Special teams get you the field
(11:20):
position you need.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Hey, Marty, time now to bring in our guest.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
And I'm really excited about this week because it's our
first female guest. So Marty, now you're out number two
ladies in you. I'm most Jets fans. If you're a
real true Jets fan, then you know Gotham City Crew
Claudio runs it. Well, guess what we have the first
lady of GCC, Nicki joining us.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
NICKI, thank you so much for joining us today.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Yeah, thank you for having me. This is my first
solo podcast. Usually I'm accompanying Claudio.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
NICKI.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Let me ask someone, when you and Audio got married,
did you know what you were getting yourself into.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Actually, so I get asked that all the time, and
what I will say is we met because of the Jets.
So I became a Jets fan in twenty eleven from
my friend Kim, who is die hard and so much
energy and infectious to be around. And I just I've
(12:25):
always had a passion for rooting for the underdog. So
it was just right up my alley to be a
Jets fan. And Claudio and I will you know, you know,
our good friend Hector, he introduced us because we were
the only Jets fan friends that Hector had. So I
met Claudio old school tailgating, like around the back of
(12:45):
the trunk, going to a game together, and rest is history.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
What is it like being a Jets fan and being
married to an uber uber uber Jets fan?
Speaker 5 (13:03):
It's tough tough to answer it because it's like like
I said, I've always I've always been about rooting for
an underdog.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
That is just that's just who I am in my nature.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
It It's really nice what we've built with Gotham City
Crew because we have this community around us who all
understand what we're going through together collectively. So it's really
about the community. For us, it's like we always have
our friends to rely on.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
We always have that.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
You know, that other person to be cheering with. So
that's what really makes it fun. I will say, prior
to Gotham City Crew being really what it was being
a Jets fan, I would just I would just pray
every Sunday that the Giants would lose too, because then I.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Going into work, going into work.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
If the Jets lost and the Giants won, I would
hear it from Owe. But if the Giants lost too,
it was just silent and I would have a really
peaceful Monday.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Nikki, what's your message to Jet fans? Now?
Speaker 3 (14:09):
With an zero to five star ags in there is
a former player of fifteen years in the league, what's
your message to the Jet fans?
Speaker 5 (14:18):
You know, I would say we we've held on for
this long from the beginning of it like this. We
knew this was going to be a rebuilding year.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
We knew it.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
So I'm not as disheartened going into it with no
wins because they've played good football. We've seen that there's
their competitive games, their higher scoring games than they've been it.
Has it all been wonderful?
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Absolutely not? Is it would it be great to have a.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Win, of course, but you know what do we expect
as Jets fans. It's every year we're like, this is
going to be our year, but it's not, so we're
awaved in this situation. I think that Aaron Glenn I
really like what I'm seeing from Aaron Glenn. Being a
former player, he just has a whole different perspective on
what it's like and what it means to be on
(15:11):
the field behind this fan base, because the fans can
be very fickle in New York. You know, if you
don't have if you don't have a win two weeks,
they're over you. You know, they're calling for your head.
So he I think he knows that he can kind
of grate his teeth and keep the players motivated. I'm
(15:33):
loving that he's really holding people accountable and the way
that he's celebrating. I mean that one play Will MacDonald
when he blocked that kick and then ran it back,
that was incredible and I personally loved watching Aaron Glenn
run down the field with him.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Okay, it was awesome. And you know what else is awesome,
Gotham City Crew. What you guys do and what you
guys stand for can you tell people a little more.
It's not just the love of the Jets in the
Yet's fan crew.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
So the Jets brought us together, right like we this
is our shared passion together.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
But it's a community. That's really how it started.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
How it became was my husband grew up in a
soccer fan supporter club lifestyle. You know, his parents are
South American and he was going out to Pittsburgh and
he called the Jets and he said, I'm you know,
who's your supporter club? I want to hang out with
other Jets fans And they didn't. They said, we don't
(16:33):
have one. We don't that doesn't exist, and he wanted
to create it. So he's done an amazing thing. And
then partnering up with Lou in I believe it was
twenty seventeen. So Kwoyo started Gothham Sea Crew in twenty fifteen,
partnered with Lou for the tailgates and I came out
around twenty seventeen, so Lou was already in lat Jay
(16:54):
three and we have grown this home base for us.
But it's all about the fans. It's all about bringing
people together, doing bigger things for the community. You know,
we work very very closely with Marty and the Marty
Lions Foundation, and a huge part of what we do
(17:15):
is every single year we set the goal to grant
at least one wish but through the Marty Lions Foundation,
so it's a higher purpose. And the people in this
fan base are really extraordinary. They're so generous, they're so
kind and loving, and we have the most incredible time
together getting together on road trips, home games, everything. It's
(17:36):
it really is a community and we're so so blessed
and thankful for it.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Yeah, and Nikki, you said it. You know, you're so
active in the community. You're very modest too in how
you get involved, how you stay involved, and I think
that that's what makes Gotham City so special.
Speaker 5 (17:55):
Yeah, yeah, I agree with you. And that's actually it's
funny that you say that about us, because that's what
we say about you. So when people ask us what
we do, why we do it, and we always go
back to talking about the Marty Lyons Foundation, what we
say is it Marty knows every one of his wish kids.
(18:18):
He knows them personally, he knows their stories, their families.
He is so involved, he is on the golf course,
at the bowling alley, at the events, really being part
of it, and it's such an inspiration to see, you know,
if you have the means, anyone can can throw money
to a cause, but to really be involved and be
(18:40):
the boots on the ground, that's what makes it special
and that's what keeps us inspired as well. And we
love to be there and be a part of it
and be part of people's core memories. You know, that's
one other quick thing about Popham City Crew that I
know I'm very proud of. We are so fortunate to
(19:02):
be involved in this community and have access to the
Jets organization, different players. We've become friends with alumni and
our families over the years, but so many people, like
fandom has passed down through generations. The amount of people
that we have that come to the tailgates or meet
(19:23):
us at an awake game and say, I've been a
lifelong Jets fan. I'm fifty something years old. This is
my first Jets team ever, and I'm bringing my children
and my grandchildren. We take that for granted that we
have the ability to be here, that we have the proximity,
you know, that we can be at all the games,
(19:44):
or we can go to training camp and we know
all these different activities that are happening. So for us,
it's so special to be able to enhance enhance that
experience for someone that you know, you're a lifetime Jets fan,
you've never been to a game. This is probably the
one time you're ever going to go in your life,
(20:05):
and we get to be a part of that. We're
so thankful and we just want it to be the
greatest experience that they can have. Win or lose. We
can't control the outcome of the game, but we can
control the fan experience.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
Well, Nikki, the last question for me, Number one, how
are the kids? Number two?
Speaker 3 (20:23):
For all the followers, all the people they've followed Jenay
in this podcast, Yeah, well with Gottham.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
City, Yeah, the kids are great. Since you're asking getting big,
we're taking Vinie to Disney because he's about to be three.
You can get involved simply you follow Gotham City Crew
on all social media accounts and you go to gothamseacrew
dot com you can become a member. Membership is free
and it gets you access to a lot of different
(20:53):
things that we're doing. Gets you access to our tailgates.
We do have an additional package, a die hard package
for people that are coming to more things where they
get a little bit a little bit more in access.
They'll get discounts to two events, they'll get first access
to things, and you get a hat as well for
(21:13):
that and follow us on social for everything because we
do so much, so much charity work that we love
to have people involved in that with us and just
come by, say hi, be part of the moment.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
It's great to have everyone.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
Well, Niki, we appreciate you joining. And again Gotham City
Crew go like, go whatever you need to do because
they're awesome. They're great, great people, great cause and great fans. So, Nikki,
you guys are awesome. Thank you so much for jumping on.
Speaker 5 (21:44):
Thank you, thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
All Right, Marty, because I'm in London across the pond,
I only have like two questions because I'm tired and
I'm like five hours ahead of you. Okay, so are
you ready for.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
All right?
Speaker 1 (21:58):
This comes from a fan in London. His name is Lucas.
He lives in London, and he asked, would you have
ever wanted to play a game in London?
Speaker 3 (22:07):
Oh, I'd love to play a game over there, you know,
go over there, spend the week like you're doing, and
enjoy the atmosphere, enjoy the food, enjoy the people. But
you got to come back with the victory, you know,
if you're over there all week, and that's a long
flight back if you don't win.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
M all right, And now my last question. It comes
from Connor from London. Are you a tea or a
coffee guy?
Speaker 4 (22:32):
I'm a coffee guy.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
I like coffee, you know, a little cup of the
vanilla latte, you know. I'm rather in the hot tea
with the honey. I'd rather have a good cup of coffee,
nice and strong. And good thing about me I can
drink coffee at night and still go to sleep.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
M very nice. All right.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Well I'm going to go drink some tea because I
am not a coffee girl, and I'm going to go
to bed.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
How does that sound?
Speaker 4 (23:01):
You do that?
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Janay, And we'll see you guys when you get back.
Good luck on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
I won't see you Sunday. I won't happen to run
into you on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Now I'm here, you're there, and our fans they're following
you all the way to London.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
I'm excited. We can't wait to see Gotham at City Crew.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
Bang. We'll see you next week.
