Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to another episode of jet Stream. I'm
Jenny Cochle alongside my lovely co host, Jet Legend Ring
of Honor member number ninety three on the field, but
number one in my heart. Mister Marty Lyons.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hey Marty, hello today.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
What are we going to do this week? You know
the Jets come back from London there Oh no.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
No, wait second, Marty, before you before we start talking
about any of this, I got something I talked about.
First of all, we have a great show today because
we have one of our favorite people joining us. He's
a Jet Icon. We won't talk about that. And like
I said, I need to talk to you before you
talk about any football. You got to meet Janet Jackson.
I gave you last That's home game. Can you please,
(00:43):
you please?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
The one thing the Jets have done as a ambassador
for the Jets, I go around to different suites during
the first quarter, second quarter, and then the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
And apparently they gave us the wrong number for the suite.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
So when we knocked on the door, you know, all
the all Janet accident security came and they stopped us
and said, no, you can't come in, and the two
people Marianne and Michael said. I said, what's going on?
They said, Janet Jackson's in there. I go, well, I
certainly would like to meet her. So the lady outside
(01:17):
went inside and said, you know, Marty Lines from the
Jets is here. He'd really like to meet you. And
the security people said okay. So I went in there
told her I was a big fan. We took a
couple of pictures that her security or bodyguards. They were
big Dallas Cowboy fans. And of course, in the middle
of the third quarter, the Jets weren't playing too well
(01:38):
against the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
They were getting worn out a little.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Bit, so I kind of made some jokes about, hey,
can you take it easy on us in the fourth quarter.
And it was a very very nice visit. She was
very friendly and I really enjoyed the visit.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
I'm extremely jealous of that. And then last night or
this on Tuesday night, you got the you are joath
On foundation.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Well, don't make it right, yes, Joe Namath couldn't make
it up, but he brought in quite a few athletes.
I got to see Bob Crable and Lance Mell and
a lot of the other players that I've played against.
But just the name it foundation do it. They do
a tremendous job raising money and then dispersing the money,
not just to one organization or one charity. He probably
(02:26):
has twenty, at least twenty that he helped, and I'm
very fortunate that he donates some of the proceeds here
to the foundation. So you know, I'll always be there
to support Joe. And you know, he's an icon. He
does so much for so many people, and he always
sits in the background and doesn't want the recognition, but
(02:48):
the recognition should go to Joe Namath and his staff.
And you know, Greg Buddle does a great job introducing
all the athletes and using his sets of humor to
get everybody involved.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
So that's good.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
How does he introduce you? Do I introduce you better?
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh, without a doubt.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
You know, Greg always has to do, you know, because
a lot of times Jim Kelly.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Is there, so he'll use the phrase giving them the business.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
And of course you know the New York Sack Exchange
and Greg and I have been friends for a long
time and I respect the way that he handles himself
as an MC up there, and he gets everybody involved.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
He makes everybody laugh. So it was a good day.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
It was a wet day because it rained all day Monday,
but the athletes still came out and he still had
a full house.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Oh that's cool. And then you did something with your
foundation last weekend.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I didn't know.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
This past weekend, I had the Lions Bowl, which is
flag football. We had eight teams play at MetLife and again,
thank you for the New York Jets for everything that
they do to make the met Life Stadium available for us.
My son Jesse, he runs it and at the end
of the day we closed the doors. We gross to
(04:02):
one hundred and seventeen thousand dollars and a foot will
probably net over one hundred thousand.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And it's not just.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
The money, Janay, is the awareness that we raise with
these young adults who are just starting families, and you know,
the game is a bonus. Some guys come out there
and they really play hard and they want to win.
And some teams like my other son Luke, he put
together a team and there's a running clock now of
(04:31):
fifteen minutes and he lost his first game forty six
to nothing. And I said, Luke, how in the world
can you lose forty six to nothing. He goes, well,
once you start falling behind, if you're on your own
three yard line, you go for it on fourth down
if you don't pick it up, and it's easy for
them to score. But at the end of the day,
(04:53):
Janey a lot of smiles, a lot of people. And
again I want to thank the Jets organization, thank all
the staff over it, met life to security people. They
do a great job. The marquee out in front has
everything from the Lions Bowl on it, and you know,
it's pretty exciting when you pull up to the stadium
(05:14):
and there's your name up on the market that the
Lion's Bowl fourth annual is being held there.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
That's so cool. All right, let's talk a little football
before our guest comes in, which, by the way, we
are so excited about our guests. Let me just say
that again. Stick around. He's our favorite. Marty. What do
you tell this team that's still looking for their first win?
Speaker 3 (05:33):
I still got to tell him that you've got to
believe in one another, but you've got to believe in yourself.
And you know, the the longer it takes for them
to get victory number one, the harder it is for
them to accept the message. You know, AG's been doing
a great job, you know, trying to change culture and
(05:53):
trying to preach the right way of playing the game.
But being owen six. You know, if I told you
that the Jets were going to be owing six after
six weeks, not a lot of people would believe that.
If I told you that Denver got nine sacks and
held the Jets to minus ten yards passing, you would say, oh, wow,
(06:15):
they got blown out.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
No they didn't.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
It was thirteen to eleven. The defense played well, but
they only got one sack, you know, so it was
give and take, give and take, and then you know
five people are making a big deal out of right
before halftime.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
The Jets didn't try to push it down.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Well, they didn't try to push it down, you know,
didn't try to get points. That was AG's decision and
the big decision. At the end of the game, when
it's fourth and eight and you can attempt a sixty
one sixty two yard field goal, I think I would
have gone over there, and maybe Nick told him that
(06:56):
that was out of his range. But you know, we're
to motivate and grab them, tell them, hey, Nick, you
know what you can do this? You know you're gonna
be carried off the field. This is going to be
your moment. We only need you to go sixty to
yards get your.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Foot in it. Well, you know what, that's why I'm
at home watching the game and not coaching.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
They decided to do something else, and they're w and
six and they have an opportunity to come back and
play a Panthers team that is three and three and
ended up coming back and beating Dallas thirty to twenty seven.
So there's not going to be any games on their
schedule even past this week, going to Cincinnati next week
(07:37):
where they'll face Joe fleckim So you got to get.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
That first win in.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
And I can tell you one thing by going to
all the suites, the fans are. The fans are behind AG.
They're behind this team. They understand it's going to take
a while for this team to turn it around. It's
going to take a process for these players just to believe.
It's going to take time for a g to get
(08:03):
his own type of players in here. Are they disappointed
at Owen six, Well, I think the players are disappointed.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I think you or everybody is.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Everybody's feeling that Owen six but put the record aside.
You got a big game coming up. You got to
get your first win, and let's talk about.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Some positive What do you see from Jermaine Johnson? What
does he add to this Jets defense?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, it's okay, passion, you know, look at what he
did on the very first series.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
You know he forced a you know, got a sack
and forced pressure on him.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
He's just a tremendous player. And the energy that he
brings to that defense. Yeah, you put him out there
with Will McDonald. You got two guys that you can't double.
And you know, I thought the defense played very well.
You want to give up thirteen points, you're supposed to
win those games, but unfortunately, uh, the ball didn't bounce
(09:01):
their way.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Now, fortunately they did get a turnover their first one
of the seasons. As a defensive guy and a defensive
who's been struggling to get turnovers, what can that do
for this team propelling them forward?
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Well, it's one turnover, but you only got one sack.
You gave up nine sacks. You know, that's the name
name of the game is just to have more points
than the opposing team. And you think about all this
would have been you know, secondary conversation between you and
i agen A if they didn't if Denver didn't kick
(09:35):
that field goal and the Jets won an ugly game
eleven to ten. Well, that's the bottom line, is who's
gonna win, who wins, and who loses.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
You know, it doesn't matter whether you look good and
you lost.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Those ls are starting to you know, add up, and
right now they're at six.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
All right, no time it is. It's time for questions.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
You ready, we jumping the questions early today.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Well, you know we're going to mix it up. We're
still waiting for our guests to come. We got it,
so we wouldn't move mix it on. So we get
these questions in week seven questions. This one's from Ray
from Pa. What's the funniest thing that ever happened in
a huddle?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Funny thing that ever happened in the huddle? I don't
know if it's really funny.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
I remember we had a defensive coordinator by the name
of Joe Guardian. He would signal in the defense to
Greg Buddle, and Butch would yell back at him that
didn't work the last time, and he would change the
defensive call and if it worked, great, if it didn't work.
(10:47):
You know, we all we all had Gregg's back anyway,
changing the play.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Changing the play. Okay, Jared from New Jersey. If you
could replay one game from your career, which would it be?
And why Well, if I.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Could replay it, it would probably be a game that
took place in nineteen eighty seven.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
We played the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
I slanted inside that pushed down by the guard Dan
Marino went out to his right. He threw a pass
and got intercepted, and you know, change of possession. And
I turned and I saw a Dolphin player running and
it would be considered a blindside and block nowadays, and
(11:36):
I hit Dwight Stevenson and he fell. He blew his
knee out, and he never played again. You know, you
still remember that because I was good friends with Dwhite,
went to college at Alabama with dwighte. So if I
had one play that I could always take back, I
(11:57):
wish I could take that play back, or at least
changed the end result, the end result of that play.
You know, I see Dwight every every now and then,
and we laugh and everything, and I keep telling them,
you know, it's been let's see thirteen forty one years
(12:19):
or thirty eight years after the.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Hit, and I keep apologizing.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
To him and he says, hey, man, it wasn't your fault,
he said, you know, that's the way the game was played.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
He goes, I know you didn't have any intent.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
You didn't.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
But it's easier to say that, but when you live
with it, you kind of say, hey, I wish I
had it back, all right.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Sandy from New Jersey. What's one thing about playing for
the Jets that fans might not realize?
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Well, for me, it's the it's the support of the organization.
You know, when I started in nineteen seventy nine, there
was there was no free agency.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
You were with the Jets for as long as your contract.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Now, the players they come and go, and you know,
I just encourage all the players that have those long
term contracts with the Jets to stay here in the New.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
York metropolitan area. Get to know the fans.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Let the fans know that beside that name and number
that's on your back, you're a person. You want to
give back to the community and get involved with the community.
The more that these fans get to know you as
an individual, the better you're going to play.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
A right And this question comes from for Marie from
New York. Now I know the answer to this, I
figure just kind of goes with today's tame who is
your favorite teammate?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Who's my favorite team?
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Is your favorite teammate?
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Oh, I would think that all my teammates were my favorite.
But when you go to war with somebody and you
need somebody up front to have your back, that's Joe Kleckel,
without a doubt. I knew if seventy three was on
the field and I got into a fight, you know,
seventy three had my back. And I remember when I
you know, I always had his back.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
But I remember it was early in my rookie season.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
He was in a fight and I went in there
and I pulled him out of the poll and you know,
got him in a bear hug and pulled him back
to the hotel. He looked at me, he goes, you
ever do that again, I'll kick your ass right here
in front of everybody. He goes, you eat a fight
with me, or you leave me alone. And right then
and there, Jenay, I knew I had a front. Yeah,
but that's that's the was his mentality, and that was
(14:37):
the mentality of the team man.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Either you fight with me or you leave me alone.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Do you have another good Joe Clcko story besides the
one in that one and besides the one?
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Too many Joe too many Joe Cleco stories to go on?
Speaker 3 (14:50):
You know, it is his birthday today, and I think
he were still waiting for him because these are special.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Because look what I have, Marty, you can see it.
I have right now just for.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Joe a birthday hat. Oh wait till he sees that.
I think I think he's trying to get on, Janey.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
He was trying to get on. What was it like
bringing him into I know you've talked about this before,
but what was that like? Sharing that moment for him
getting into the Hall of Fame?
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Oh? It was. It brought tears to my eyes. Yeah,
you know.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
And when he asked asked me to represent him and
to be his presenter. You think of all the people
that Joe played with. You think about his son Danny,
who has three Super Bowl rings. You think about his
older son Michael, and then he's got another younger son, Josh, and.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
He's got, you know, two beautiful daughters.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
And for him to ask me, it was it was
a special moment.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
It was one of those how can I ever thank you? Joe?
I owe you the rest of my life? Are you
asking me to be your persenter? And uh?
Speaker 3 (16:04):
And you know what, Jenny, we took I think there
was about eight of us that went out there, and
Joe got the tickets and Joe got everything set up,
and I said, Joe, you know what, just let me
know at the end of it, you know, since you're
organizing it, what I owe you. And at the end
of it type of person he was, he picked up
(16:26):
the tab.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
On all of it. He said, you don't owe me anything.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Well, you know what, Let's bring on our boy. Joe
Coleco Hall of Famer played all I think eleven straight,
eleven years.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
With the the Jets and one with the Colts.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
We don't even talk about that. Let's just talk about
you with the Jets. How are you, John?
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Happy birthday?
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Look, I got the hat on for you. I got
my birthday hat, I got happy Birthday.
Speaker 5 (16:55):
You are a whack anyway, So hey guy, everything good.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Joe, Well, thank you for joining us, and we're trying
to figure out what the Jets being zero to six.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
What would you tell if you were the head coach
or you.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Were one of those players in the locker room, what
would you be preaching to them right now?
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Well, you know you got to say that you got
to stay the course. The reason being is you know
you are what you are. So in other words, player wise, listen,
they're down players, uh their key positions or having a
rough time. Quarterback, receiver. Defense has played pretty well. I
mean you know they haven't. They haven't been behind in
(17:39):
games to where the defense couldn't hold their end up.
It's just offensively, they they just haven't been able to
move the ball like they are.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
The running game.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
Was decent at times, but then when they they go
to that possession receiver, they go to that guy that
can make that play, you know, the young fellow from
Melosy the tight end. You know, I was hoping he
would turn into that big body like a like a
a Kowski or or any of the other big tight ends,
(18:12):
you know, as a possession of receiver where you can
you know, send him in the in the tight end
to the safety turning him around, throw him the football
and his big body just gets in a way. You know,
they haven't had that. The only receiver that's come up,
you know, with anything worthwhile? Of course is Wilson and
he's he's at a player. But you cover you cover
(18:33):
up one player, and you know who else do you
have to go to. But as far as the players
themselves in the locker room, you know, what do you
say to him? Hey, you got to gather the whacks.
It's you against the world right now. You know, you
know you, you and I, You and I have been
there in almost the same situation where we won ten straight.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
You know, I forget what year was, but you know,
if you have the ability to do it and listen.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
As a quarterback, he's pretty good when he runs the
ball and he and he finds receivers quickly. He's not
a guy that reads real well because there's well, there's
not much to read because the receivers he hads, like Bzark,
they can't get open. And why that's another you know
misst over. But as far as the players themselves, you know,
(19:29):
I don't care what's written in the plus. I mean,
you know me better than anybody, Marty. I could care
lessons than the player. The guy in front of me
is what matters on Sunday. And you know, getting the quarterback,
you know, not letting him run the ball. Those are
the kind of things defensively, but they've done pretty well
with okay, But as far as the offensive side of
(19:49):
the ball, somebodys got to take a troll. Somebody, some
player has to step up and be that guy, you
know what I mean. I don't know them that well,
you know, and I don't know if they have that guy,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
And of course, back when we played, it was a
little different, you know, you.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Know, Uh, being a leader during our days was you know,
a guy that took control of the locker room, you know,
and if somebody got out of hand, you guys took you.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Know, we took care of it.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
I don't see that, you know, I don't see that
with these guys.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Do you know, do you can you do you remember
a time back when you were playing or a situation
where you guys had seen control. Do you remember that time?
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Yeah, I mean, uh again, the years, the years we
played so long ago.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
It's ridiculous, you know, but uh, you know, uh, I
remember coming out of out of a game one day,
and uh, I'm trying to remember the players who are
having those negative comments and negative thoughts and basically I
just confront them with it. It says, if you really
(21:02):
think we're that band you don't want to play, you know,
whyn't just pick it up and get the f out
of here, you know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (21:09):
Because I want to win. You know, I always wanted
to win a Super Bowl. I always wanted to play
a Super Bowl and that was our main goal.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
And anybody didn't have that, you know, And uh, you
know did I take you know, I don't want to
sit here today. I was a bully or something like that,
but you know I took things to my hands that
you know, basically when when guys would get out of
the line in stupid ways, and you know, especially young
guys with a lot of money, you know, they think
(21:36):
they got the world, you know, beat now it's not true,
and you have so much growing up to do. You
have so much more. Like now, there's a guy right there,
I mean, everything that football has presented for him, he's
stuck an advantage of it. What I mean by some
Martin Lions Foundation. Football's part of this, but football is
also a big part of growing up, okay, And you
(22:00):
can have all the comments you want now when Wilson
came out the field the other day and he had,
you know, gotten in an argument with Aaron Glenn or whatever,
and he said to the press, I didn't know what
was going I didn't know what the plan was.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Okay, not to be smart. He doesn't need to know
what the plan is. He needs to know what his
plan is. He needs to know what he's doing.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
I think that was just a deterrent to where you know,
he was getting in a head coach's face about hey,
get me the ball more, do whatever. But I know
you're not going to hear the truth all the time
in the press about what they did say to each other,
you know what I mean. But I think that's a
good thing. That's a guy that wants to take charge.
That's the guy that wants to win, and that has
(22:44):
to be contagious to the other players. Now the other
players have to get behind him, and if they don't
get behind their leaders, there's no chance for him.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
You know.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Joe Jennay and I were talking before he got on
and she asked me to tell a funny story about you,
and I said, you know what, there's so many I said.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
You know, I am a jokes.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
The one that I remember, you know, so vividly. It
was my rookie year.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
We were playing that shame and somehow you got into
a fight and I went in there and I wrapped
my arms around and I bear hugged you. I pulled
you back to the huddle, and you looked at me
and you said, do you ever do that again? I'll
kick your ass right here in front of everybody. You
either fight with me or you leave me alone.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Go I go right then and there, man, I knew
I had a friend.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
Well, you know, honestly, Marty, You know that goes back
to the mentality of winning. You know, what do you
have to do to win? What does it take to win?
And for us it was physicality, you know, as defensive
lineman and offensive lineman. The only thing that your respect
is when you get your ass kit or you kick
somebody's ass. That's that's where you get respect, you know.
(24:00):
And that's why players are oh good players, and players
are so so players.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
And you know, having your.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Will imposed on someone else is something that is aware,
and that's what these guys have to come about to
do impose their will.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
And I haven't seen that, you know.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
Listen, the other thing is too is you know, there's
a concentration in football that has to be has to
be deal dealt with. When you talk about penalties and
things that go wrong and mistakes, you actually watch and
we can verify this. You and I.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
You know, when they're running certain ride plays, or they're
any power plays, or they're running something it's out. You
could see how the offensive linemen are scooping the linebackers
and doing whatever. And we could see who's doing it
and doing it well and are trying harder to with that.
(25:01):
You know as well as I proved it a million
times over the linebackers that ever played behind me. I
never let a guard get through and I gang him
down by the face mask. I'd do anything I could.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
If they weren't going to stoop me and get to
the linebacker, they're gonna have to double me and you're
gonna have to stay with me so the linebacker runs free. Okay,
I don't. I don't see all that happenings playing as
a team, you know what I mean? You know, and
offensively that that's scooping, that that reach blocking, that all
those things that that's that's unity. That's that's a team thing.
(25:36):
You know, and uh, I think they need to work
more on it.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
That's all.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Well, Joe, we could talk to you all days. You know,
it's your birthday. We appreciate you taking the time out

with my cake. I know your tenants, I know he
just got here. I didn't get to him.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
