Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, and welcome to Week ten of jet Stream. I'm
Janey COCHLEI alongside one of my favorite people, a Ring
of Honor member number ninety three on the field, but
number one in my heart, the great, the one and
only Marty Lyons. Marty, we are fresh off of bye week,
fresh off a win, so we are going to have
a really fun show. We got questions from the fans.

(00:24):
We have another jet legend joining us later, but Marty,
I first have to start with you because you got
to meet a very very special person during your bye week.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, how about that? A bye week baby?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Yeah, Grandad three times over.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yes, three time.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Layla El seven pounds two ounces born to my son
Jesse and his wife Julia, and she had gone to
the for her check up. They sent her right to
the hospital and probably an hour later he said, hey,
Leila's here.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
So she's a.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Beautiful, beautiful baby girl. And we're just so fortunate and blessed.
And you know, as we celebrate, you know, the passing
of Nick Mangole and his legacy.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
You know, God takes away one gives us one back.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Yeah, yeah, let's talk about Nick because we haven't talked
since we haven't had a show since Nick. I mean,
when you met Nick, what did you think of Nick?
I mean what he I feel like he was the
epitome of a New York Jet and you spent a
lot of time with it, both in the Ring of
Honor together. I mean, what did Nick mean to you
as a Jet player?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Well, you know, he was a tough player, but he
knew how to turn it on and off. When he
went on the field, he knew what he had to
do as a center, he made a lot of the calls.
And you know, when you have a rookie quarterback at
the time in Mark Sanchez, you know he controlled the
offensive line.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
But when he wasn't.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
On the football field and he was out in the community,
he was just one of those guys. Pop a beer,
have a beer with a fan, and he truly loved life.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
And we're all going to miss him.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
And it just goes to show that you never know,
you know, everybody has a you know, you hate to
say it, everybody has an expiration dating. When God wants you,
he's going to take it. But I think for Nick,
at the age of forty one, he touched so many
lives and he left an impact, not just on his teammates,

(02:29):
but in the community, and I think everybody understands just
how lucky we were to be able to have a
friendship with Nick.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
He was a special individual.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
And the most remarkable thing of all this he was
diagnosed with this kidney died at kidney disease when he
was playing. This entire time he played, he played with
this this kidney disease, and it's just so sad. My
heart breaks for him and his family. But you know, Marty,
you almost felt him Sunday in Cincinnati. I feel like
it was part he will this team to win Sunday

(03:03):
against Cincinnati. What did you see from this team and
what type of resilience did you see from justin field
in that game against Cincy.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Well, you saw a lot of heart in this team,
you know, up and down, up and down. Then you
fall behind, and of course you have your nemesis on
the other side, Joe Flaco and going back and forth.
But the way that they finished the game, that's the
most important thing thing to me. Twenty three points in
the fourth quarter, when you look at it, over five

(03:32):
hundred total yards of all offense, complimentary football, when the
defense only had one sack and Will McDonald got that
laid in the game, but it was complimentary football.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
And you know, you.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Can't win two in a row too after you win
one in a row. And it'd be nice if they
can come back this week and back up that performance
against Cleveland and they're going to have a tough time offensively.
Good thing about it, that offensive line starting to gel together.
They didn't They didn't give give up a lot of pressure.

(04:04):
You know, Justin Fields did what he had to do
when he had to run the ball. Brice Hall over
one hundred yards rushing, very very impressive win for him.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yo, I was gonna say, what did you think of
bris Hall? Is this is this Briss Hall's quote unquote
breakout game this week and this is what we've been
waiting to see from him.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Well, Jenney, you would hope so, but you gotta you
got to feed him the ball.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
You gotta can't.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
You know, you can't find yourself in a hole where
you're fourteen points down and now you got to play
from behind and you have to throw the ball. I
think this is type of offense even if you fell
behind by ten, stay within your game plan. He is
a workhorse and you know what's deceiving about Brice Hall
is his speed. Once he gets outside and he breaks

(04:53):
that corner, you know it's hard to catch him. So uh,
you know, five over five hundred toll yards of ball defense.
You're going against a Cleveland team that they struggle offensively.
You don't allow them to even believe that they're in
the game. Just go out there and control the line
of scrimmage and you'll be fine.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
During the bye week, the Jets added John Metchi i
wide receiver, traded Michael Carter to the Philadelphia Eagles, and
out of a wide receiver in John Matchie. What do
you think of Matchi? I know Alabama guys, so I
know exactly.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
That's the only thing you can stop there.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
If you look at that picture behind me, Jane, that's
that's three of us that were drafted in the first
round underneath coach Bryant. That's Joe Namath, you know, Richard
Todd and myself.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
But any player that move your head, let me see
the guys, let me see that there. We got a
perfect gotta.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Have that a lot.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
You know, any player that comes out of Alabama, they've
played underneath coach Bryant or played underneath Nick Saban. Their
NFL proven, they're ready to go, and I think bringing
in another wide recion receiver is going to help compliment
you know, Garrett Wilson. You know, but you still have
to go out there and perform. You got to stay healthy,

(06:08):
You got to be able to get the ball. You
got to be able to make things happen. And the
biggest thing is make things happen in space. Get the
ball out there in space, pick up the yards after
the reception, and pick up the yards after contact. That's
the most important thing.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Now, I mean, it's going to be fun to see, well, hope,
it's gonna be fun to see this offense. What they
did in Cincinnati, they didn't have Garrett Wilson. Can imagine
what airic Garrett Wilson's going to add to this offense
and match you another receiver, Well, think.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
About what they did with their tight ends, and think
about the running backs. Isaiah Davis, you know, an outstanding
game he had, and you go, Mason Taylor.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
I'm in love with him, you know, I think that
I think he's going to be too many many Pro Bowls.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
And you know what it is, You've got a young
tight end out of LSU that has proven that he
can play. And you also got a tight end and
Jeremy Rutger who played at Ohio State, and they compliment
one another the way they block and the way that
they can catch the ball. And I've always said it
will continue to say when you have tight ends, they

(07:19):
will be the best friend.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Of the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Marty. I know we've talked about this for but what
does that one win do for this team?

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Well, I think it proves that the culture is changing.
I think that everything that Age has preached to the
team in the locker room is now, Wow, it's paying off.
And I think that you can look at this one
in seven record and say, wow, six of those losses
came by one score, you know, or less.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
So they've been in a lot.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Of the games and you look back and you try
to review why you lost and how you lost, and
a couple of those were on the defense, you know,
giving up those late drives. So you know, Pittsburgh the
field goal, Tampa Bay the field goal, and you had
a couple that the offense didn't go out there and
produce against Buffalo, against Dallas. But it's it's a team sport.

(08:17):
You win as a team, you lose as a team,
and uh it was it was gratifying to see the
team celebrate as one unit out there in Cincinnati.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
All right.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Now, what about coming off of a bye week?

Speaker 2 (08:33):
I don't know. I don't think.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
I don't think we ever had a bye week when
I was playing, But I think you know, a bye
week now is you you can get healthy. And now
you've got to put on the push because you got
nine straight games. You got Cleveland this week, and then
you got to turn it around and go to New
England on Thursday night. And you look at New England.

(08:57):
They've won six in a row, they're seven and two.
They're up there in front of Buffalo. So here comes
New England again. We figured New England was going to
be on the side, But now you've got New England,
you got Buffalo. But out of the nine games, you
got two against New England and you got Buffalo, and

(09:21):
you got one against Miami Dolphin, which is struggling. And
you know, you got New Orleans and you got those,
you got Atlanta. You can put yourself in a position
to make a nice little run. Where that run will
take you, I don't know, but you got to you

(09:41):
gotta keep playing with the enthusiasm, the confidence and try
to compliment one another everything everything you do out there
on the field.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Joining us today is Jet's legend and one of the toughest,
smartest safeties to ever play the game. A guy who
played nine years for the Jets, A fan favor who
went undrafted to special teams, to a starter, to a
team captain, to NFL iron man Marty you know who
I'm talking about, the one, the only mister Victor Green.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Today. Hey, thanks for having me, guys, I appreciate you,
all right.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
I gotta start so, like I just said, you went
from undrafted to being one of the best safeties in
the NFL. What was the moment in your career that
you knew I belong I'm a Jet.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
I don't know if that was a moment, to be honest.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
I just think the type of players like Ronnie Brian Washington,
James Hasty, those guys welcomed me and getting none of
that umbrella and watching those guys be a professional and
watch how they practiced and took care of business. That
inspired me that I wanted to this is where I belonged,

(11:01):
and then I can do this, and I knew I
had all the intangibles, but I just didn't know what
I was walking into at the time, to be honest
with you. But soon as I was there, like I said,
getting around those guys and they kind of embraced me,
I knew I had an opportunity to be something special.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You know, Victor, we're all mourning the loss of Nick Mangle.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
What did he mean to you as just say, a
Jet legend and a person off the field.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
You know, I got to know Nick a little bit.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
I met him a few times a golf tournament and
got to talk to him, you know, very inspiring guy
and watching watching him play for a long time in
the Green and White. I mean he just inspired just
the way he played, you know, all the stories I heard,
and how you want to come off the field. He
wanted to play injury. He just wanted to play for
Rex and you know the type of you know, just

(11:54):
our man that he was. I mean, you know, Jet's legend.
I mean it was just setting into here. I mean
really sat in the air here heartbroken. I mean sure,
just like everybody else.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
Man.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
So it took a step back to really understand, man,
that life is precious and you really gotta live day
by day and try to treat people the right way,
love the right way.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
And you just never know when that time is up
for you. But it's unfortunate obviously, Victor.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
What it means to you to be a jet? Could
we talk about Nick Mangold who epitomized this being a jet? You,
Marty Lyons, what is it like for you to be
a jet? To say, Hey, I'm a New York Jet
for nine years.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
I mean, you know, I'm still a jet. You know,
I'm still believed that green and white. I love the fans,
That's what it means to me. And you know, the
fans were just so contrivating, so you know, I mean,
I want to say loving, but they you know, it
just is that love hate type of fan base. But

(12:56):
you just love them. You love them because you go
out there and you play your best, they gonna reward
you with the type of embrace that they've given me
twenty five years after leaving a game or so, you know.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
So what it means to me is just just just just.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
It's hard to put it in the words to be
honest with which I just I just love the franchise.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Was.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
It was a franchise that you know, unfortunately, I shouldn't
have never left, and I steal embrace and I love
the fans, and it means so much, to be honest me,
That's just what I can say about what it means
to me. I just wished and hope that we can
get to a point as a franchise where we can
be relevant again, and we have some great moments.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
And I'm just looking for those times to repeat itself.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Well, you know what, Victor, that might be right around
the corner because you played with ag and you know
what how demanding it was for him as a player.
What do you think about him as the head coach
now at one in seven? I think starting to turn
things around.

Speaker 5 (14:02):
You know, a lot of players have a lot of
great things to say about him. I talked to Justice
and Justine and you know, they really loved this guy,
you know, and I was up there in training camp
and I mean, he really you know, we talk about
culture and Martint Marty, you know that word, and you know,
I really think that he have changed the culture of
his team.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
You know, I think it's gonna take it a little
bit of time.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
I think he got to bring everybody in phase, because
I don't know, we got everything we need to be
where we want to be.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
But Ag has that temperament to be a leader and
be a winner. You know.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
I talked to him, you know, every year after the
All season and probably two years ago. You know, I
knew Ag was ready to be a head coach. You know,
before that, you know, he was a coach.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
He was a.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Defensive bag, defensive coordinator. And just talking to him then solidified.
That's no negative, right, It just it just I don't
think he was ready. And after going to Detroit, being
on the Dan Campbell, you know, and talking to him
a couple of summers ago, so that dude ready to

(15:09):
be a head coach. Just this whole thinking and his personality.
Everything changed about him. The way he even talked to me.
He was talking to me like he was my coach,
you know, and it's like this this like, dude, we
still boys, Man, you ain't my coach.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
You know.

Speaker 5 (15:24):
So so I just knew he was ready at that time.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Man.

Speaker 5 (15:28):
And uh, and you know when I see him and
how I see him engaging with the players and just
him being a player again himself.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
You know, And I think the fans.

Speaker 5 (15:40):
If they give him time, they gonna reap the reward
for a g Ben, the head coach of that football.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
Team, well said, that's awesome.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
Victor.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
Now, Victor, you do a lot off the field. You
have a foundation, the Victor Green Foundation. Tell me a
little more about that. And I know my husband's playing
your golf outing. I know Marty's played in the golf outing.
Tell us everything that encompasses.

Speaker 5 (16:00):
You know, it's my thirteenth year, and I know Martin
has been like thirty years now, twenty of your Martin's
been doing it for a long time, and I'm trying
to get to where he is. But it's a it's
a family event that you know, there's saw himing up.
It's really a family event. We have like thirty eight
vice them. I mean, it's just a great day. Everybody
that plays an event I invite personally, so it's not

(16:24):
you know, that's that family event. My family, all my
kids were there, my wife was there, everybody was there
this year and usually every year my son played football.
So it's hard for him to get buy some time
out to buy a week. But you know, we give
money to charity that support education, health and wellness and character,
and more important than that, we try to create opportunities

(16:45):
for other SERF kids. And what I mean by that
we take them to the games.

Speaker 4 (16:49):
You know.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
We take him to the Jets facility, you know, we
take them basketball, We take them to amusement park. They
come to my golf tournament every year. We try to
create opportunities where they feel and bolden to go out
into the world and be successful. You know, just bring
them to the golf tournament. You know the type of
celebrities they see, a lot of these kids don't go

(17:12):
across the street as Marty as No. I mean, it
means that they don't go outside of they They found
their environment. So we want to get them outside of
that environment so they can see that people like me
that come from the projects that made it that they
can do.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
The same thing. So that's what we try to instill
any kids.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
One nice question for me, Victory, if you had one
message for the Jet fans, what would that be?

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Just be patient? Just just be patient, and you know
it takes time. You know, you look at Detroit. It
didn't they it didn't happen overnight. You know, they had
two bad season, then they won the last seven games
of the season. I think it was before they really
went into that run. So you know, you just got
to get a recent time. I think he used to
guy and if he ain't got the coaches behind him,

(18:02):
you know, trust that he's gonna make changes, and he's
gonna make changing in his personnel. You don't do the
right thing, you know, he's gonna make sure he got
the right personnel on that team to succeed.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
So I just just patience, Victor.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
We appreciate your joining us, one of our favorites.

Speaker 4 (18:22):
Appreciate you, guys. Thank you. Have a good day, Victor.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
Green's always fun catching up with the old legends, don't
you enjoy that?

Speaker 3 (18:28):
It really is because everybody, you know what you come
in here and summer first round draft choice, some are
free agents. But you know when you talk to somebody
like Victor who's proven himself, you know, both on and
off the field, and when he makes that statement, I'm
still a Jet today, Yeah, I mean, it tells you

(18:48):
how important it is to play here in New York.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
And you know, neither one of us went to a
Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
We went to a couple of playoff games, but we
still have a great deal of pride and respect for
the Jets organization and the fan base.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Yeah, all right, Marty know what time it is.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
It is question time.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
It's the time. Drum roll please, all right. Two quick
questions this week, Week ten. Question from the fans. This
is from Peter from New York. Best Jets uniform.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
I know, you know, you you might have to turn
the clock all the way back to nineteen sixty eight
when they won the Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Oh you like that version.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
I like the white orme white and the green jersey
on the white pants.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
And you know, I'm going all the way back because
that's the last time they won a Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
You know.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Oh I'm enjoying that.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
I don't really you know, when they had the Titans
jerseys and the helmets and everything, I could take it.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
But no, I liked all black. I'm the new I'm
the new Age. I love that all black and that
Matt helmet.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Yeah that's nice too.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
Yeah, all right, And this is the final question. This
comes from Janney from Connecticut. Oh, what's the best thing
about being a granddad. We're going to wrap the show
up as we started with you being a granddad?

Speaker 2 (20:15):
The best part?

Speaker 1 (20:16):
Yeah, you have three two olders than a baby.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Oh, I would say, seeing them grow?

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yeah, is it cool watching your kids be a parent?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
It's challengingl.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
You just hope that you set the foundation the right
way so that when they become parents you don't want
to overstep your boundaries and say this is what you
should do. Hopefully they know, you know, but it's great.
You know they always say, uh, what's that saying? God's

(20:59):
way of saying.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
A birth of a child is God's way of saying
this world should continue.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
How's beautiful?

Speaker 1 (21:07):
How sweet? Holding that little baby of yours at her I.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Was holding her head in my in the palm on
my hand.

Speaker 3 (21:15):
Just making sure that the head didn't bounce backwards or forward.
And my son is carrying her around like it's like
she's a football.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
I wanted to make sure number one, I was sitting down.
Number two.

Speaker 3 (21:28):
I held her head the right way, and then I
didn't even move because she was only you know, she
was three weeks early, seven pounds two ounce. Is just
so fragile, so beautiful. You didn't want anything to go wrong,
and you just wanted to hold her. I actually felt
tonight that I bonded with her. In the first twenty

(21:48):
four hours. You know, you could see her. She tried
to open her eyes look at me, and then she
puckered her lips a little bit, you know with that. Well, yeah,
but it was great, it was special.

Speaker 1 (22:01):
Oh well, your special congratulations to your family and the
new audition.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
What a great bye week, got a got a grand baby.
Now we're headed to home, playing home at MetLife Stadium
and play the Browns. Let's do this.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Gonna have fun, Let's get the second one, Let's win
two in a row.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Let's do this. Marty has a police so much fun.
