Speaker 1 (00:06):
Joe.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
When the NFL schedule came out and you saw that
you and Troy Aikman were going to be calling the
Jets in the forty nine ers in Week one in
northern California, what was your initial reaction.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
My initial reaction was that, obviously nobody at the NFL
office is superstitious, since we had the first game last
year against Buffalo and you know, I mean so much
hype and we were so pumped a year ago, and
that feels like ancient history now. But it was like,
Man one network's going to get Aaron Rodgers debuting with
(00:39):
the Jets and it gets to be us and then
we know what happened, and now here we go again,
and skipping the superstition part of it, it's a great matchup.
I mean, you know, everything's built for the Jets. We
always say this team's built to win.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Now.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
To me, this Jets team is built to win right now,
like now, and it's not like a year two years,
you know, with the guys they brought in on the
offensive line, with Aaron being forty years old going to
be forty one later in the year, but with the
young talent like Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner and everybody else.
(01:16):
This team has got a chance to obviously snap the
whole postseason drought, but make some noise in the AFC,
and then they're taking on the forty nine ers that
are I think they still have to be the team
to beat in the NFC. They were within a whisker
of winning the whole thing in the Super Bowl, and
there's no reason why if they're healthy, they can't be
(01:38):
right back there again this year.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
What a difference a year makes.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Obviously, you were on the call there at MetLife Stadium
the Jets overtime victory over the Buffalo Bill September eleventh.
Now September ninth, you will be on the call for
Jets of forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
Can you you've.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Experience it's a lot as a broadcaster throughout your life
in multiple sports. Can you describe what it was like
at MetLife pregame, the opening few moments, Aaron going down
and then you calling Xavier Gibson taking the punt back
(02:20):
to the house for the victory for the Jets there
in Week one.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, I'm glad you reminded me about that part, because
it's easy to forget how good that game ended up
being and anytime you get you know, you get a
walk off touchdown in that fashion, it's absolutely phenomenal. So
I had kind of let that part of it slip
my mind. But you know, the pregame stuff, the hype
(02:47):
was just through the roof. It's New York and it's
the anniversary of September eleventh. There's a lot going on there.
And then you've got this four time MVP who's been
mister everything for the Green Bay Packers making his debut
for the Jets, and you know, it's a New York team,
(03:09):
and as you know, I mean, anytime New York's involved,
it's just bigger. The lights are brighter, the expectations are more,
and so the hype was real. And then having to
call that. You know, when you watch the first replay,
it's like, man, I hope that's not what I think
it is.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
And we're you know, we're.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Conditioned to not make any speculation as to what you see.
But it obviously didn't look good and we know how
that story ends. So we go forward, We point our
vision toward twenty twenty four, and I think he'll play well.
I think Aaron Rodgers when he is pressed into a
corner or asked to, I don't know, prove himself. Even
(03:56):
though he's a four time MVP. I think he's more
than capable. And I think a motivated Aaron Rodgers is
a dangerous Aaron Rodgers for the rest of the NFL.
And you know, to be there to document chapter one
of this upcoming season is great.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
How about the storyline of the Northern California kid going
back to face the forty nine ers, And obviously you
guys will touch upon the fact that way back in
the day, obviously the forty nine ers want a different
direction of the quarterback position, taking Alex Smith in round
one while Aaron waited for his turn and getting that
(04:36):
call from the Packers.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, I mean that's always there, and I'm sure for
a Northern California kid from Chico, California, he gets tired
of that storyline.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
I liken it too.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
You know, when I was doing the Red Sox week
after week, it felt like and during the drought and
the whole Curse of the Bambino and everything else. You know,
Boston fans get tired of hearing it, and it's like, well,
but it's part of the story and I've got to
be the guy to go, Hey, I know everybody's tired
of hearing it, but don't forget there's the curse of
the Vambino's been eighty six years. Finally that thing ended.
(05:11):
And at some point, you know, Aaron Rodgers has got
to be like, man, I got to be past this
in my life where I was the guy waiting around
and hoping to get drafted by the team I grew
up rooting for, and here we are with a forty
year old man. To me, the draft is a long
I mean, that's got to feel like a lifetime ago
(05:32):
for me and I would imagine for him too. So
I we'll get there, and here it is forty nine
ers again. But I think I think our focus, as
it should be, will be on going forward and not
going too far back.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
In the AFC is loaded with quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
The storyline with Aaron being forty, he's going to be
forty one in December, trying to lead a franchise back
to the Promised Land for the first time since Anyuary twelve,
nineteen sixty nine. Of course, but the Jets haven't made
the playoffs in thirteen years either.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Joe, Yeah, that's I think of bigger pressing issue is
the playoff drought. It's too big of a market, it's
too proud of a franchise, and that's why you go
out and make a deal to get Aaron Rodgers, obviously,
and that's why you go all in for twenty twenty four.
Everybody's tired of talking about it. I'm sure the league
(06:27):
is dying for the Jets to fulfill everybody's expectations. And
you know, they were the toast of the schedule a
year ago and they're on there a lot again. We've
got another game with the Jets at home against Buffalo
pretty early on in the season, so we took Yeah,
(06:47):
it's another year where the NFL is betting on the Jets,
the networks are betting on the Jets, and I fully
expect them to be a playoff team this year. And
I do believe in that old hey, once you get in,
anything can happen. I expect big things for them this year.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah, what do you think about the pieces around Rogers
with those young emerging stars and offensive backfield. We could
start there with Breis Hall and then Garrett Wilson has
had a phenomenal summer and a great start to his career.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
I mean, I think it says it all. You know,
as silly as this may sound, but for a guy
like Breece Hall to be a top ten pick in
just about every NFL fantasy.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Draft he was in mind, I didn't get him.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I wanted to get him, but he's a top ten
pick across the board. So that tells you what the
league thinks of him. That tells you what the experts
think of him. Garrett Wilson is everything you could ever
want in a superstar wide receiver. I think he's got
obviously all the tools, but what a great attitude, what
a great young man.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
And getting a.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Chance to meet him last year going into that game one,
he walked out of our meeting room and it was like, whoa.
That guy is just different and Sauce Gardner's just made
to be a star. I mean, he's just made to
be a top NFL shutdown corner. There are very few.
I remember Bill Parcell's joking with Troy and me years ago,
(08:10):
like everybody says, so and so's a shutdown corner.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Okay, there's maybe.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Been one shutdown corners names Dion Sanders, and that's about it.
But he's got that kind of feel to him. So
there's a lot of pieces around Aaron Rodgers. The offensive line,
as I'm sure you were gonna ask me about. They've
got two really talented aging tackles. They get Simpson on
(08:37):
the inside to buttress what they've been trying to build there.
They're new on the edges of their offensive line for
this year. I've done a million Tyron Smith games. He's
healthy and he's right. He's a shutdown left tackle. The
problem is, I don't think he's played an entire season
for I don't know seven or eight years where he's
(08:58):
played all sixteen or seventeen games, So you know he's
not getting any younger. But when he's healthy and he's right,
he's as good as there is. So you know, you
got to keep those guys healthy. I think health upfront
on that offensive line, while everybody's focused on the guy
taking the snap and Aaron Rodgers, health upfront is paramount
(09:21):
and if they have it, then I think they've got
a shot to really make make some trouble in the
AFC if they're mixing and matching again, where they're fourteen
different offensive line combinations in seventeen games, it's not going
to be a recipe for success. So you know you
have to tape them up and hold them together and
(09:43):
help that those guys can open up holes for briefs
and protect Aaron.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
How about the star power on both sides when you're
talking about the Jets and the forty nine ers. We
just spoke about Aaron, of course, and Brieese and Garrett Wilson.
You can flip it to defensive side of the ball
and you Sauce Gardner and C. J. Molesley and Quincy Williams,
and then you go up a level and talk about
(10:07):
Quinn Williams and you go to the forty nine ers.
Of course, they find this most relevant quarterback at the
most at mister irrelevant brock Perty who's had a tremendous
start to his career, Christian McCaffrey in the offensive backfield, Deebo,
Samuel George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner. Can you just
(10:27):
speak to the big names in this Marquee matchup in
Week one?
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Yeah, I mean you just mentioned everybody's fantasy draft. I
mean it's it, and you know that's that's a real thing.
McCaffrey's as good as there is you know, it's hard
to believe, and I guess it had some merit, but
just everybody was knocking his size coming out of Stanford,
and he asked he had a year and a half
there where he was pretty banged up. But he has
(10:55):
been knock on wood for them, at least mister reliable.
For the forty nine ers, it was an absolute steal.
The league is made up of stars and he is
one of them.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
And with what he.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Does out of the backfield, running it, catching it, he's
as good as there is. I think their head coach
is outstanding in Shanahan and putting a game plan together.
He's not been able to put it all together and
win a championship, win a Lombardi Trophy, but they've been
knocking on the door now, even going back to his
time in Atlanta. He learned from his pop. He's been
(11:29):
living and breathing this for a long time. My partner,
Troy Aikman, who I respect, said that if he were
a GM in twenty twenty four, he would make a
trade and try to get Kyle Shanahan, who didn't care
what it would cost. He thinks he's that good at
putting game plans together. And that's got to help a
guy like Brock perty There's no doubt about it. I mean,
(11:51):
if you put Mac Jones in that system, is Mac
Jones maybe the guy that the forty nine ers are
building around. Who knows, But they get Brock Purdy. He's
been sensational. Took him to the Super Bowl last year.
They missed him the year before when he was hurt
and they lost to Philly in the champ Game. Yeah, Kittle,
They've still got so many deebo as you mentioned, a
(12:15):
good offensive line, Bosa on the defensive side.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
There's a lot there.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
So for our camera operators, they got a lot of
different people to focus on Week one between the Jets
and Rogers and Purdy and the forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
How about the chess match there with Kyle Shanahan calm
plays against his former defensive coordinator and Robert Sala who
was there in San Francisco. And obviously the Jets had
some new wrinkles right now with Jeff Allbrick call on plays.
But what do you think about that dynamic when you're
talking about Shanahan and Sala.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Yeah, there's a lot of respect there. I know that
we did the Super Bowl with Salomin Sala as a
defensive coordinator the game they lost and blew that second
half lead against Kansas City in Miami, and that really
is what launched Robert Solid to the Jets as the
head coach.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
So I know there's a lot of respect both ways.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
The coaching tree for the Shanahan family going up to
Mike and and those staffs that he had in Washington, uh,
and before that to some degree, but really the staff,
the young guys that he had in Washington is just
stunning with O'Connell and McVeigh and McDaniel was a part
of that and lafleur and I mean it goes on
(13:31):
and on and on. So uh, it's Kyle. Kyle was
indoctrinated into the NFL life as a young man, is
a boy, and I think he's taken what his dad
taught him and improved upon it for today's game. And
and so you know, those those coaches, well, I'm sure
(13:52):
have a nice handshake and a I don't think they're
texting at this point, but a nice itt'll get together
at midfield before the game and then they'll in I
guess the way they say, go to their respective corners
and come out fight because it'll be fun to watch
that chess match.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
You said earlier that you think the Jets should be
a playoff team in twenty twenty four, that return match
up from last year, the Jets hosting the Buffalo Bills
on Monday Night Football in Week six. What's your take
on the AFC East this season?
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Well, I mean, I'll reserve my judgment on Buffalo until
I see them early on in the season. I mean,
there's no way And I know Diggs didn't finish the
season great last year for the Bills, but he stills
one hundred plus catch guy Gabe Davis is not there anymore.
(14:52):
Ken Kaid's gonna have a bigger role. They hope they
made themselves better in the draft, and you still have
Josh Allen, who is a playmaker, a quarterback and a
guy that can throw it as well as anybody. It
can run it as a big bodied quarterback slash runner
as good as anybody. But I don't know, I mean,
I don't know how you lose a couple of those
(15:12):
pieces on offense and it doesn't take you a while
to settle back in. You look at Kansas City, they
traded Tyreek Hill and they may look different, but the
results are kind of the same. So it's not like
it can't be done. But I just I'm going to
reserve judgment on them. I think the Patriots are in
a complete rebuild and I don't think anybody would argue that.
(15:38):
And then you've got Miami that is a team that
can put up points, as we saw last year, dynamic,
an offense that's kind of fast break, kind of like
the Globe Trotters, and they come at you from a
lot of different ways, and to it seems like the
right guy with coach Mike McDaniel pulling the strings. But
it feels like the vision is there for the taking
(16:02):
a little bit more than it has been in the past.
I think in the past you go in and it
was like Patriots, Patriots, Patriots, and who's going to get
the wild card? That's We're a long way from that
now with Brady being gone for years now, and and
and what they're doing with New England, and then you
know Buffalo again. I mean, I think they are gonna
(16:22):
have to adjust post Diggs and Davis and some of
the guys that Allan's been relying on, and and we'll
see how that looks once once, it counts.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Two final ones for you, and you've been gracious with
your time. We really appreciate it. From your perspective, how
much have you enjoyed your time up there in the
booth with Troy and can you speak to what you
think he brings most to the game and your call?
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Well, I mean, I've always been proud of what we've built.
I think as much as friends as we've done on
the air. You know, we're both girl dads. Our girls
are basically.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
The same age. Mine are a little bit older.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
And so we've kind of gone through a big chunk
of our lives as kind of younger men to middle
aged men together and we rely on each other. And
so when he left, and we had talked a million
times about it before he left, Fox and it was
just like, how do I get there? How do I
get back in the bootstanding next to him, and Fox
flashed Olsen in front of me, and Greg would have
(17:27):
been great. Obviously, Greg's great. He's one of the most
respected guys in a blink in this business. And they
flashed Brady and Brady's Tom Brady. But I like the
known quantity of a guy that has won three Super Bowls.
He's been broadcasting for twenty five years. He knows where
I'm going, I know where he's going. It's just a
(17:48):
good feeling when pressure is at its highest to know
that the guy next to you has got your back
and he knows you've got his.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
So it's been a great partnership.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
I guess if we weren't honest about that when he
left for ESPN, we could have ended it easily, and
we didn't. So uh, you know, we're we're we can't
wait to be standing next to each other in that
booth week one.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
That's awesome. Girls are the best.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
My daughter is gonna be a five on September Eleventh's.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
There's there's nothing like that. I've got a six year
old blake, one of my twins, crawling it. Yeah yeah, uh,
And you know it's great. It's a great part of life.
But little secret, I'm excited to get out of it.
Down it's quiet. Say hi to the Jets Jets fans,
(18:45):
say j E T S Jet go get that helmet
on the bottom. G j E T S j E
T S Jets Jets Jets.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
Okay, walk in here is the perfect way to finish this.
There you go. There you go, turn your head, bebe,
turn your head, Blake Jets.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
There it is there, it is j e Ts.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
You'll have to call with Troy Aikman up in the
ESPN booth is Jets forty nine ers one of that
football and we will stop and say hello when you're
back here and met life.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Week six, Jets.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
Bills, fantastic, enjoyed it, thank you.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Thank you. All right, Bart Scott.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
We're starting our what fourteenth year together or maybe fifteenth?
Speaker 5 (19:39):
Wow? Is it that long?
Speaker 1 (19:41):
It's been that long?
Speaker 6 (19:42):
This is amazing, man. I think we need to have
we need to get anniversary gifts. Give it to us
from the Jets.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
I like it. Do you want anything in particular?
Speaker 6 (19:51):
I don't know, Like when you go with marriage, you
go with marriage anniversary gifts. I know like year two
was like wood or something nickel or something like that.
I don't know what fourteen years, but I think it's
a book out there. We have to ask the women
in our lives.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
We got to get maybe a little goal, uh.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
Yeah, maybe a nice little ring.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Hey missing in the studio, But we will get you
back up here next week.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Absolutely. You know.
Speaker 6 (20:16):
Week one is always crazy you know, it's the start
of the week. It's unlike any other part of the year.
You got all these games Brazil, Thursday night football, the
open air, all that stuff.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
But you know, next week can be a little bit.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
More normal as you know the Jets, or as normal
as it can be. It's been a while two years
with the Jets, with all this national attention this year,
I'm really excited about what the difference in this year
and next year. Hopefully that we can keep eight healthy
and then we know that it takes anywhere we need
to go or hope to go.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Katie just told us in the back that fourteen year anniversary.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
You do ivory.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
Ah yeah, okay, okay, so you're gonna get me a piano.
I'll take it all right.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Listen, So you were talking about this year and the expectations.
What feels different about the Jets as they approached that
season opener against the forty nine ers Monday night.
Speaker 6 (21:09):
The quality of the roster, by by far, the depth
of the roster, right, You're not you're not wishing that, Okay.
Of course, if any any team loses their star quarterback,
you feel like, okay, well they're there.
Speaker 5 (21:22):
There chances of having.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
A successful season, you know, drop dramatically and is almost impossible.
But when you talk about the other positions, you know,
with the addition of for Shano with you know, I'm
sitting here in Baltimore, you know, being able to go
get Morgan Moses and bring him back where he was
a couple of seasons ago, but bring him back season
as a veteran that knows what winning looks like because
he was able to have success with a great organization. Also,
(21:47):
you know Simpson to come over, and so now now
you have two guys that, even though it's a different,
you know cast around him, you have comfort in knowing that,
hey man, that guy pulling you know, from the left
side to the right side. I know how he pulls.
I know how he comes around the corner. I know
how Tidy comes around the corner. And then he just
goes back to rivera Tucker which he's played with before.
(22:07):
So like it's like it's a new line, but it's
still a line that has a lot of familiarity with
each other. And then you put a Hall of Famer
out there that's just gonna bring a level of nuance
to playing and position at a high level. All the tricks, right,
and you have a rookie that gets to learn all
those tricks, that gets to hear about all those tricks,
you know.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
And you know, it's funny that when we were.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
Going through the draft process that Forshanu, you know, comp
was Tyron Smith, but also you know, his favorite, one
of his favorite players was Tyron Specialmighty.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
He looked up to.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
So to be able to have that wealth and knowledge
like me, you know, coming in the league, you know,
in college doing any dogs in the house. To be
able to go and actually play with Ray Lewis was
like it was a it was a dream come true.
And after you get over the star studingness of it,
it needs to becomes a regular person. That's when the
questions come. That's when you start to challenge each other
and learn from each other. And I think it's going
to be, you know, such a great deal last year
(22:59):
all the back end the roster, you know, that had
to be forcing too duty. These guys now have experience
and it's comfortable. I'm excited to see what type of
role they carve out for Carter Warren because I think
he's a future starter on this offensive line.
Speaker 5 (23:12):
You know, as soon as next year or the year after.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
So that was a big emphasis in the offseason. Joe
Douglas had to fortify the offensive line. You believe he
certainly has done that. They do have big time talent
up front and then a lot of depth. What do
you think about the Jets announcing the contract extension for
Michael Carter, a guy that you've been very high on
as far as his spot in that defense because listen,
(23:40):
obviously he's covering those option routes in the middle of
the field, but he'd also he's also a junior linebacker
against the run.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
I mean, I've been seeing those praises for a long time.
You know, Michael Carter the second I've been praising it
on S and Y. I've been praising it on ESPN.
I've been praising it here on these platforms because I
know how difficult the job is. He reminds me of
a nickeolee to having Baltimore saying it was Korey ikey right,
and koreyoity.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
Was a glue because he was that toughness.
Speaker 6 (24:09):
Because you can't just be a guy that, oh I
can play in space, I can dance with the best
of them. You got to be a guy that can
anchor because essentially you're the weak side linebacker. You're sitting
over there. You got to come down on a run
and set the edge. You got to come down there.
They may pull a guard and they might crack block
with the receiver that you're covering, and he might go
hit the linebacker.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
Then you have to come in and replace the linebacker.
Speaker 6 (24:30):
The only difference is the linebacker probably weighs you about
fifty pounds and he's done that.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
Man.
Speaker 5 (24:34):
He's so humble. Man.
Speaker 6 (24:35):
He was one of those guys who came in with
Breis Hall. Now, Wis bres Hall could have found a
place here, but unfortunately you can't keep them all, you know,
and DJ Readers did, Bryceaw, I'm sorry, bryceall right, and
you know, but Michael Carter came in with him, and
he didn't have like the glory days like he was
there with Echos and all those guys. And I think
(24:57):
back in the day Arthur More led all those guys.
He was that's all over the place. But he was
just you know, going about his business and sharpening his tools. Man,
And I'm so happy for him. And I think that's
something that they can tell of the lower draftings. I
remember when I came to the league, people used to
always have the bar Scott's story, the undrafted free agent
five hundred dollars signing bonus that eventually got rewarded by
his organization. I think those are the same stories that
(25:19):
you tell about Michael Carter. And when you come in here,
you'll be about your business and you perform at a
high level.
Speaker 5 (25:24):
We're not letting you lead this building.
Speaker 6 (25:26):
You're one of us, and we're gonna reward you and
show you how much we appreciate you. And it's not
gonna go to the end of your contract. We're gonna
come to you and say, you know what, you've outperformed
your contract and we thank you.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
How much does that resonate in the locker room because
the guy is a key performer on the field, but
you just mentioned it. He's such a humble dude. And
also he's just gone about his business the right way.
I gotta imagine everybody in that locker room is like,
that's right, man, this is the kind of place I
want to be.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
They take care of somebody like.
Speaker 6 (25:59):
That, Yeah, I mean, because we see around this league
it's a lot of hold dolls going on because gods
feel like they've outperformed their contract and they're not getting
their contracts addressed, you know, and sometimes we understand it's
the business part. It's going to be higher, harder conversations
that the Jets are going to have to have, you know,
like I said before, the hard part. The great part
is when you draft well you know, and guys you know,
exceed expectations or live up to expectations. It's a beautiful thing.
(26:23):
That means your scholar department, everybody is evaluating talent and
identifying what a jet looks like. The hard part is
like much like with your Mango and the Brickershaw, they
come up around the same time and you have to
you know, figure out the nuance of who.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Do I pay first? Why do I pay them first?
Speaker 6 (26:41):
How do we structure it so that we can make
sure that we keep our draft picks and you know,
the Jets of hit and they move back into the
first round and was able to get you know, and
the hard part is, you know, Brees is going to
you know, because he's a second round draft pick.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
That means the only happens rights for four years.
Speaker 6 (26:55):
So that's all the stuff that that happens back and forth,
but I think you can identify that every one of
those guys deserved to be part of his core. Hopefully
Vera Tucker can ball out this year because I think
he's been he's shown his versatility, and I just that's
really like who I'm wishing you know the best for
because Vera Tucker has come here and you talk about
a guy like Michael Carter who shows tremendous humility and
(27:19):
you say, well, Barb, why are you talking about humility
and sacrifice because he's an All Pro guard, but the
team needn't play left tackle right tackle. He never complained about, hey,
this is gonna hurt my value. He just showed up
and said, whatever you need, coach. Those are the type
of players that that that deserve to be played because
it's selflessness. He's put in the the the we before me.
(27:40):
And I just hope this guy has a healthy season
so that they that the world can see what's a
special player he is. I believe that he's the best
guard in football that hasn't been able to show everybody
he's the best guard in football.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
And I'm not slighting Zach Martin, who's had a hell
of a run. I'm not I'm not.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
I'm not slighting the kid up there in Atlanta, But
I don't think any of them have the talent and
versatility of Bear Tucker.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Speaking of talent, you got a lot of young stars
in that locker room.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
We start on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
You just mentioned a VT, But Garrett Wilson is a
guy you visit with weekly, Brie.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
You say, for a whole hour.
Speaker 6 (28:18):
He gave me a whole hour on his off day,
brought his brother in kill A Camp. I thought, I
was like, damn, Garrett has grown a beer in two days.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
I just saw him and it was it was his
older brother camp Gart.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
So then you got Breecee on the other side of
the ball, Quinnin Williams is still like twenty six years old.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
I think, Sauce Gardner.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
You got Jermaine Johnson entering his third year, and the
Jets continue to say, hey, whenever a Son Riddick gets here,
we're gonna give him a bear hug. So hopefully that
is on the horizon soon. Let's talk about this matchup
this week against the forty nine ers. What do you
think about the test going a San Francisco playing against
(29:01):
defending n a C Champs, a team that has a
lot of continuity on the offensive side.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
Of the ball. I mean, I think you talk about
coming out immediately and being tested as far as your
your personnel, your keys, understanding your communication, your pre and
post snap, your side adjustments, you know. And this is
a bit of a chess match between two coaches that
know each other very well.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
I think.
Speaker 6 (29:24):
You know, sometimes when you're with your friends or teammates,
you kind of tell some of your secrets, You give
some of your secret sauces up. But I'm sure that
when they were, you know, on the same team, Salah
and Shanahan shared your concepts and what they want to
do and how they like to attack certain types of
defenses and offenses. And there's going to be a chess
match because these are two teams I think are built
in each other's image. Talk about great left tackle, great
(29:46):
left tackle. You talk about versusal running back versus running back.
Speaker 5 (29:48):
You talk about a.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
Route running receiver and Ayuk and you talk about a
you know, a route running receiver in Garret Wilson. You
talk about your up and coming defensive end right right,
maybe he's a couple of years behind where Bolsa is,
but he's behind him and he's hitting in the right direction.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
You talk about our standing linebacker play.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
You know, you got two of the best payer and
I think the Jets have the advantage because green Law
is hurt. But you talk about you know, he's a
Mosey five time pro bowler, you know, one of the
best in the business. And then a guy that's a
little pit bull in Quincy that just gets to run
around and just attack dog invite everybody you talk about
the better.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
You know, we're better on the line back.
Speaker 6 (30:24):
I mean on the corner side, but they have good
corners in Shadari's ward.
Speaker 5 (30:28):
I think, you know, people would say that he's a
good player as well.
Speaker 6 (30:30):
You know, let's see if Chuck Clark and Chuck Clark too,
because nobody got to see who Chuck Clark was.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
And I think he's gonna remind him what he's all about.
Speaker 6 (30:37):
And who who fung him right, And so you got
two teams that are mirror image of each other. And
so now you know, I don't think anybody's gonna be
going to back down or feel like they're gonna be
out physical, you know, and it's gonna be who can
make the big play, who can make that kick, who's
gonna not make that pivotal mistake or who's gonna keep
their cool and who's not gonna get that crazy holding
(30:58):
call that nullifies a huge play. But I think the advantage,
the biggest advantage we have is we got eight and
we know we love Rod Perdy. He's performed at a
high level and he's a beautiful story mister relevant all
that stuff, But.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
Eight is special.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
Eighties fighting for an opportunity to be on that Mount
Rushworld Quarterbacks. So when you talk about the matchups, the
matchups are simply these are two teams that are mire
images of each other. It's usually the most physical team
who wins. And let's see if the Jets can bite
down and chewing them out piece. Because this ain't gonna
be a knockout. It's gonna be a drag out fight.
I don't care if one team goes up early or not.
(31:32):
The other team is gonna come back. So it's gonna
be about who can win within the trenches and who
can make the big play. Kyle Shanahan is gonna have
something for solid and that defense that they haven't seen
him before. Prepare for and how do you handle those
type of plays and minimize them?
Speaker 1 (31:47):
Do you move sauce?
Speaker 2 (31:48):
I mean, this is interesting and you just went into
the matchup so eloquently when you're talking about we broke
it down. Check us out CBS Sunday morning, seven thirty am.
Jets game. They were looking at the film. It's almost
like they have a positionless offense. When you have mccaffrere,
he can move around. You got Deebo, Samuel can move around.
(32:09):
They got au back. Kittle is right up there with
one of the top ends.
Speaker 5 (32:16):
He's a tackle. He's a tackle. He's a right tackle.
Speaker 6 (32:19):
So like if you're d N and you Jermaine Johnson
just just asked eight and Hutchinson when he got pancakes
a couple of times last year by by by Kittles.
This dude is a Iowa understand This guy's an Iowa
tight end.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
Not to be slept on.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
Producing some of the best tight ends in all the
business man and he's the best, most complete. He's the
closest thing to Robert Kowski that we've seen since g
has hung up his cleats. Grunk was one of these
guys that was a good receiver that gets those yards
because he has huge chetch radiers. But he was a
guy that was pivotal to New England in their run game.
And that's why they always put them opposite because they say,
(32:55):
trinking handle the left side, kill you handled the right
side because inside interiorly we have the advantage.
Speaker 5 (33:00):
We spoke about that, you know on our show that's
gonna air.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
Do you think Sauce is gonna see a lot ayuk?
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Is that?
Speaker 5 (33:08):
What I don't.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
I don't think you play that game with them right
because I mean you stay left and right. I think
you you have just as much confidence and DJ Reid
as well, you know what I mean, to be able
to go over.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
So it's not like it's a it's a big drop
off with DJ Reid.
Speaker 6 (33:22):
I know Lastchyar he played at a high level of
the year before he played at tremendous level. So you
don't worry about that. What you have to do is
not because you fall into that game if they if
they switch right. See So let's just say that we're
playing that game where we're following Sauce and then they
put deep in the backfield. That's gonna bring sauce into
the box where he's not comfortable, and you know where
(33:43):
he's gonna see Trent Williams, maybe a down block and
a pool and then now you got sauce out there.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
No, no, no. So what you want to do is
you want to play left the right.
Speaker 6 (33:50):
You have to understand the READI your keys and make
sure that you understand that they're gonna play those personnel games.
And when when Debo's in the backfield, he's a running back,
you don't have to say, oh, here comes again, you know,
here comes a trick play or like when they put
you know, Ceedee Lamb in the backfield, this is a
running back.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
So treat him as a running back.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
And if I'm one of those d ns, I'm gonna
get why I'm gonna wide my defensive ends if they
put him back there, because I'm gonna say, listen, I'm
not gonna let him circle the defense. I'm gonna say, Okay,
if you're gonna get some yards, go high, let Quincy,
go high.
Speaker 5 (34:18):
Let CJ. Mosley, But you ain't getting outside. And that's
what happens.
Speaker 6 (34:21):
A lot of times guys get hooked by Trent Williams
and he gets outside and it becomes a race, and
you know you want to you want to say, all right,
go in here and get some of this catale. And
you make sure that you tell your linebackers if you
want to be a running back, let him realize why
that's not.
Speaker 5 (34:34):
A good idea.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Okay, So help me out with this one. What does
Shanahan try to do with the pre snap motion? What's
the counter for the Jets linebackers Quincy Williams and CJ.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
Moseley.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Also, how do you negate the middle of the field
where this team likes to attack you in the passing game?
Speaker 6 (34:50):
Well, you know it's well you know it's coming off
play action, so you have to be able to read
your keys. But early on you want to settle down
on the defense, so you don't You don't play defenses
that can be dictated by the body offense, meaning that
you don't have to reload, tell everybody shift chance to
close called go from close left to close right. You
don't want to do those cyberate things, but you do it.
You play a balance defense that's left and right. You
(35:11):
want to allow your guys to play fast, because the
guy that plays fast and makes quick decisions you put
the pressure on them. They put they do all that
deception and the eye solid stuff so that you can
sit back on your heels and then you hesitate and
sets up there, sets up their their run lanes and
their blocks.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
So what you do is you play left and right,
so now it doesn't affect you.
Speaker 6 (35:29):
We should have a thing with REX that we when
teams that do this and we'll say, oh, you gots
so crazy, you know what I'm saying, because it don't
matter left for right and CJ. At this point, CJ
and Quincy should be able to say, hey, man, listen,
I know your job.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
You know my job.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
We just gonna stay here. We're not gonna be flip
flopping and going with the motion half motion. You going there, now,
you stay there, he go out. I'll take them. If
you go your way, you got them all good, and
we'll we'll we'll use our tools in our toolbox to say, okay,
well bracking them inside and out or something like that.
And I'm not about to have this guy making us
make our off defense line being three point stands and
go to left side, stand up, go to the right side,
(36:04):
flip flop and all that stuff.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
Now we're not doing that.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
Other side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
You mentioned eight before, Aaron Rodgers back in this saddle
first time in three hundred and sixty four days, taking
snaps from second year center Joe Tipman against the forty
nine ers.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
What do you make of San Francisco's personnel?
Speaker 2 (36:23):
You mentioned Greenlaw being out, You still got Warner there,
you still got both of there. You mentioned Ward as well.
What do you make of what Hackett.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
And Aaron are going to see?
Speaker 2 (36:34):
And how can the Jets dictate play nerd terms offensively?
Speaker 1 (36:39):
That's something that we haven't seen.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Here and we're eager to see if that can happen
with the hall of famer playing quarterback.
Speaker 6 (36:47):
Well, that's the beauty of having a Hall of famer.
He's been there, done that scene at all. So like
if they want to decide, Remember they have a new
coordinator as well, so they're going to be learning and
trying to adjus. He's trying to get a feel as well.
Remember last year I forgot the that coordinator's name that Wilts,
Wilts right that you know, remember they struggled early on.
He had to come from from up above and come
(37:07):
down because he was struggling, you know, So who knows
what the new coordinator is gonna have to deal with.
He's got to learn his team and be able to
learn how to make the calls. He can have all
the sauces, but that don't mean the mill is gonna
taste the same, you know.
Speaker 5 (37:18):
So you talked about Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 6 (37:19):
He's a guy that can go to the go to
the line of scrimmage and get the Jets consistently and
and they play.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
That gives him the advantage. You know, we talked that.
Speaker 6 (37:25):
We played the sound about Bill Belichick and saying, hey,
how difficult it is because brief is theren what he
can do.
Speaker 5 (37:31):
And then if you don't do that, you leave in guys.
Speaker 6 (37:33):
One on one with with Garrett Wilson on the outside.
So like Aaron Rodgers knows that. So he's gonna play
the game. He's gonna see what you're in. Okay, you
got the box loaded this. I don't mind throwing you know,
a spot pass or or or or a screen to Garrett,
because guess what that is a run that becomes a
running play. So okay, you want you want to say, okay,
(37:53):
well this is a doubling type of thing. Then I'm
gonna I'm gonna hand the ball off the breech and
see if you can tackle this big, big, big horse
in between the tackles.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
And I think you you use that.
Speaker 6 (38:02):
Fact that green Law isn't available this this game or
probably to the near the end of the season before
he comes off the I I L or injured list
dealing with the surgery that he had on his A
c L. So now you spotlight Campbell right, you know
Warner can play and that listen. I'm not gonna be
afraid of I trust Brief against anybody. So I'm not
afraid of Warner at all. But when somebody has somebody
(38:24):
in there that's a backup that's there for the first time,
you want to see if he if he can carry,
you know, carry the pill of water.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
So I'm I'm motioning, I'm running angle routes.
Speaker 6 (38:33):
I'm isolating, you know Campbell with with routes for you know,
for breeze hall.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
I'm motioning them out in the slot. See what they do.
Speaker 6 (38:42):
If I catch my man, the man, I'm gonna make
sure I isolate him, knowing that if you know you
isolate him, then the safety is gonna have to be
eight up to try and help.
Speaker 5 (38:51):
Campbell because they know, you know, they.
Speaker 6 (38:52):
Not leave Campbell one on one with Breeze Hall now
with that type of speed, So what happens. That means
that it's one on one with with Garrett Wilson because
you know, the safety to that side can't worry about
Garrett because the bigger threat is a guy like Brees
Hall who can get the ball and go take a
you know we've seen last year take a little dump
off past sixty, right, So like, so now now I
got you because now okay, I got Garrett, and and
(39:14):
you know I like that.
Speaker 5 (39:15):
Matchup too against anybody.
Speaker 6 (39:17):
Even though Shardaris war going to try and like he
don't know his name, he gonna know his name at
the end of this game.
Speaker 5 (39:21):
I guarantee that.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
So what did Garrett say to you in studio yesterday
when you talked to him about Warden?
Speaker 6 (39:30):
Well, we talked about so much. But you know, I
think we went into it a little bit. But I
don't think we went into it as much as we
We went off on the tangent on some other stuff,
I mean, cracking joke, so we kind we kind of forgot.
But what I did talk to him about is. I
told him that I spoke for him. I told him that,
you know, when we were discussing him and the tough
conversations that him and Aaron Rodgers had the difference in
(39:51):
him being, you know, a third year guy and last
year him just trying to get comfortable Aaron Rodgers and learn.
Speaker 5 (39:56):
And and now he knows what he wants to talk about.
Speaker 6 (39:59):
And that's why all those tough discussions, you know, or
animated conversations on the sideline was important because it all
leads up to this because now they have that non
verbal communication with how he's getting played, and they see
that they see the game the same way. If if
Ward wants to play over the top some type of
cool cover three that turns in the man down the field,
then Aaron throw that thing back shoulder. If you want
(40:20):
to be a trail and try and think that he
can get over and have safety help late bad we
throw it over the show the basket catch, you know,
and we saw that executed time and time again, you know,
so that's what you know, Garrett's really excited about the
fact that, you know, he feels that it's a year late, right,
and he understands that Hey, man, I've been waiting for
this for a long time.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
Yeah, that's what Sala was saying, Bart that, Hey, we
thought it was going to be year three. It was
all set for year three. But come in full circle.
What you talked about at the open here is that
this roster is better than it was last year.
Speaker 6 (40:56):
Yeah, I mean, I mean I put this roster up
against any I mean, who who has you know, two dynamity,
you know, Hall of Fame left tackle. You got, in
my opinion, the best guard in football, and you got
a crafty right tackle. Right, you got you got the
best pulling you know guard one of the best pulling
guards last year according to PFF. I believe in Simpson
(41:18):
and what he did when he pulled in the run game.
And then you got the best defense out there. We
haven't even got to the specialists. Yeah, I know, Greg
glead missed the one, you know, I mean, I hope
he got it out of the system, you know what
I mean, But you know him and Moore said did
last year was amazing, right, you know, from a stand
from a from a special team standpoint. But man, you
got weapons galore, you know what I mean. You got
(41:39):
guys are in there this This is a window to me,
in my opinion, you know, minus Aaron Rodgers, this is
a window of talent that you witnessed when you witness
the lesion of Boom and that whole era, that roster
of great young players. You know, some were high draft picks,
some with low draft picks. And also when you think
about the Patrick Willis Navarro bowman forty Niners and you know,
(42:01):
so you know, solid has seen this and heard the
stories of how two different dynasties were built in San Francisco,
and I feel like he came over, he took some
of that knowledge and built that team in that image.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Three games in ten days.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
Do you like the way that sets up early in
the year when you look at the opponents, You got
San Francisco, then a short week Tennessee, and then he
come home home opener against New England. Those two teams,
as you know very well, during the first year of
their programs.
Speaker 6 (42:33):
Right, I mean I like that, right because if you
can win this one, I mean even even a short
week with Tennessee, I mean you should, you know, I
mean not a short week with Tennessee, but you know,
going to play Tennessee. I think you feel, you feel
confident and good and you know you're sore, but you're
still fresh.
Speaker 5 (42:49):
You're still fresh, and I think that's when you early on.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
That's the beauty of being able to test the depth
of this team, because you say, okay, man, Mike Williams,
you know you really, you know, extended yourself.
Speaker 5 (42:59):
Maybe the first game we used you more than we
would like you.
Speaker 6 (43:02):
You know, we're gonna pull you back on the short
game against New England because we feel like we should
be able to handle that. We're gonna get you healthy
and keep you on that pitch count. We're gonna let
you grow, but we're gonna make sure that we get
you healthy. We don't want those those bodies to be
over extended, you know what I mean. Tyrone Smith, you
know what I mean. Like we out here, we think
we can handle this team, you know. So now we're
gonna work for Shana win and get him, get him
some action.
Speaker 5 (43:21):
And Aaron Rodgers got this, you know what I mean.
Speaker 6 (43:22):
So now you got you got guys that come in
and spell right where you can get off to a
fast start. But in these ten days, you can put
guys on pitch counts and keep guys Fresh.
Speaker 5 (43:31):
You know, Okay, we ran Breech.
Speaker 6 (43:32):
We needed to ride Breese for the first game because
he was the ward daddy. Okay, uh Braylan Braylen Allen,
we need you to all right, the second game, we
need you just be this battering ram and Isaiah Smith
you know I is he or whoever they decide to
put up.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
So that's the poorry.
Speaker 6 (43:48):
Yeah, Isaiah Davis, you know, Alan Lazard, Okay, Bromley, You're
gonna get a little bit more snaps because we're gonna
be running the ball more. You know, this game, and
we want our big guys on the outside. So we'll
give some of our guys some rests. We'll use We'll
use Garrett on a pitch count for big plays. You
know what I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (44:04):
But if it did you have coffee this morning?
Speaker 1 (44:06):
Do you coffee this morning?
Speaker 5 (44:08):
Not just you Mountain dew Man. It's football season. It's
the start of the season. Man, I'm excited you already.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
Man.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
I love this.
Speaker 5 (44:17):
I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Man.
Speaker 5 (44:17):
I've been time tired of watching baseball.
Speaker 6 (44:19):
I have to talk about baseball all days, no basketball,
talk about I mean, I can respect the fact that
we got Americans in the us open. Uh, you know,
but but come on, man, like, it's football season and
that takes president over everybody. It's like, I feel like
guys a couple of weeks ago put their three week
two week notice on today today loved ones to say, hey, listen,
(44:40):
I'm just letting you know. You know, in three weeks,
I won't be available emostly, I won't be available with
mostly you know.
Speaker 5 (44:46):
I mean, it's the start a football season.
Speaker 6 (44:48):
Anything that you want done, it has to be done
between the days of Tuesday and Wednesday. Don't talk to
me Monday, don't talk to me Thursday, and maybe you
can high let me Friday if you want to go
int day, that's the day we go out. Saturday's college football.
Sunday is football. So yo, I'm well said.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
Well said on the schedule.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
So this is our final pod before the Jets season
kicks off.
