Speaker 1 (00:00):
It was an NFL trade deadline. To remember for the
Jets is Darren Mugy pulled off a couple of blockbusters.
We're gonna get to that where Brian Balding are coming up. Also,
we're going to preview Jets brown Sunday at MetLife Stadium
with Baldy. We meet anybody in the world, and I
think we're gonna win.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Next Sunday's.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Jets wonderful.
Speaker 1 (00:25):

(00:47):
dot Com, where team spirit meets personal style. Baldy, how's
it going man, What did you think about that NFL
trade deadline day for the New York Jets.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Well, there was a blockbuster trades and the Jets were
involved with two of them. In fact, I was on
WFA and New York doing my weekly Tuesday hit when
the sauce gardener trade came down. Like literally, I got
it in real time as I was on the show,
the midday Show, and so I was just you know,
I was just taking on my feet, going it's good
for Indianapolis. They really need a star corner and they
(01:21):
could actually have a great defense. But it's good for
the Jets. It's just good for the Jets. I mean,
you acquire those kind of picks and you know, and
you free up a lot of money. And look, I
believe that Azariah Thomas, you know it can be a player.
He played well in the last game that he played.
And then when quinnin Steel went down to Dallas, I thought,
(01:44):
more picks and you can maybe build this in the
eyes that Moogs and Aaron Glenn wants to build it,
they deserve that right to do it. Nobody's going to
have more draft capital to get.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
It done with.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
But it was it was shocking to see both those
players get moved. But then to get the value for
it is well.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Baldy just touched on it. The value is the key
word here, because Derren Muji talked this week about him
meeting with his personnel department each week and saying, this
is where we assess the value on our players, and
we know we anticipate before the deadline, we are going
to get calls, and specifically when we're talking about Indianapolis,
(02:21):
he said the offer got sweeter with time or bigger
with time more assets.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Well, I mean, I just in fact, it's it's pretty ironic.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Eric.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I just did the Colts and the Steelers game one
Sunday in Pittsburgh and I talked to lou Anarumo, their
defensive coordinator. He lives literally next door to me in
Florida and we're good friends. And I was asking him
because they were trying to get some corners back. Travarius
Ward has been hurt, Jalen Jones is hurt, and so
he's just like playing practice squad type guys. So I
(02:54):
was asking him about some of the guys that were playing.
He was like, I'm gonna do the best I can, Baldi,
but you know, honestly, like we we have to upgrade
the position, Like he told me that on Sunday. So
it's not that he's running the personnel depart in Indianapolis.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
He isn't.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
But this is a talented defensive coordinator, and what they
all want are players that they can count on, depend on,
and then they can create ways to disturb the other
team's quarterback going forward, I think Sauce is in a
good position. Alex Pearce is a star player, you know,
star wide receiver for him. They played together at Cincinnati.
(03:29):
He's gonna have at least one friend in the locker room.
But I thought Indy got the player they wanted. They
gave up a lot to get them. But you know,
some teams are looking to make a run saying we
could do it this year. They've got a great offense,
leading rusher in the league. So I mean, nobody wants
to see Sauce go. You know, he was the first
(03:49):
one on the field quality man up, you know, just
stand up guy. But in the apse of getting a
good player, the Jets are getting a lot of value.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, make no mistake about it, buddy, in this Jets
organization appreciated what Sauce Gardner brought to the table for
this team.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
But when Muji looked at that trade proposal, it's two
first round picks, one first round pick in twenty twenty
six and another first round pick in twenty twenty seven.
And the Jets have you know, they're continuing to try
different things at the wide receiver position. So they get
another guy in ad Mitchell. What can you tell us
(04:26):
specifically after jumping more into the film room about Mitchell,
because that's a prolific Colts offense and they have a
lot of skill position talent. So maybe he was buried
down to depth chart, but he'll get more opportunities here
with the Green and White.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Well, it was really a depth chart thing. I mean,
they had Michael Pittman junior who they love, and they
had Alec Pierce, and then Josh Downs is a slot receiver,
and they just you know, they drafted Ty Warn. There
really wasn't a place on the field.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Now.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
I saw him Week four against the Rams, and he
had a bonehead of play. I mean everybody saw. You know,
he's making an unbelievable play, seventy five yard touchdown, the
Accults are gonna win the game, and he starts celebrating
before he gets across the end zone line. We all
saw it and uh, you know it was a fumble
touchback and raised seven points that he had.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
But the talent is there. Eric.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
The guy's six to two, he's two oh five. He
runs in the mid four threes like he's legitimately, you know,
Georgia Texas the place heat. I mean, he's the top
flight talent and he he can run the routes he
can like he's there's skill there, real skill now this
year with this offense and the way it's going, like
(05:40):
he just there was just wasn't a whole lot of
three wide receiver sets or four wide receiver sets to
get him on the field. And so he got a
chance to play against the Rams because I think Pierce
was hurt that day and he had a good day
except for the you know, the head play that he
made not cross the goal line first. I'm sure he'll
learn from it, but there's real value in that. It's
(06:00):
the second round pick played at major universities. Like he
can flat out run and he's got size.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, the size speed combination is really interesting to me
because Baldy, when you watch him on film, is this
guy's got legit separation ability up here at this level.
So when you're looking at the Jets offense, they're coming
off a game where they masked more than five hundred
total yards and that was without their star receiver, Garrett Wilson.
(06:28):
He's yeah, he's expected back on the practice field this week.
We're gonna have to see if he plays against the Browns.
But you know, you're starting to see some things come
together that are interesting for the Jets right now because
you do have Garrett Wilson, you do have I.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Think he could be a solid number two. I mean,
Garrett's gonna be the number one, but I can see ad.
I think he's more of it, just an outside guy.
You know, Garrett, you can move him around.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
He's your Z.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
You can put him in a lot of different spots
and he can flourish with matchups. But this is a
big X receiver now that can flat out run. And
he's when you watch, he's very smooth. He's not stiff,
he's not robotic. He comes out of his breaks good.
He catches the ball with his hands like there's there's
a lot I mean, look that draft that he came
out of. There was a lot of good receivers in
(07:12):
that draft. And you know, Xavier worthy some of these guys,
and honestly like he's like he's got the talent to
be a really good player.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Baldi, Let's go to the second blockbuster. I don't know
if you were live on Radio one that happen, but
your thoughts when you had heard that Quinnin Williams was
shipped to Dallas and the Jets were getting a second
round pick in twenty twenty six, a first round pick
in twenty twenty seven, and a former first round pick
in Mazzie Smith.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Well, you know they got the right team that they're
still trying to build a defense. They're hungry for good players.
You know, they made the trade with Michael Parsons earlier
this year. They got Kenny Clark, who's still a really
good player. I could see Kenny and Quinnin and Odiga
Zua as they're starting defensive tackles there in your base front.
(08:04):
He gives them better pass rush, I think than Kenny Clark.
But you know, they're trying to build their defense from
from the inside out. They they traded for Logan Wilson,
so they're trying to build their defense from the inside out.
They've had trouble even with Micah, they had trouble against
teams that could really run the football. They want to
get better there, and so they've got a very good offense,
(08:25):
very talented offense. You know, Jerry Quinn will find out
that Jerry treats his players very very well.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
He'll like it.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
There, And look, I think it's a chance for Quinn
to get a new beginning. Like, you know, he's he's
endured a lot of losing in New York and that
can wear players down.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
I think it's a new beginning for him.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
But to get that value for Quinn all right with
a big contract, Like he's still young, but you know
he's sick.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
I don't know. Was he six years into this now?
Speaker 1 (08:56):
You know?
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Hea, But like he's into this spring for a while,
like to be able to get a first and second
round pick and Mozzie, And look, Mozzie's got his issues.
He wasn't a fan this new regime of Brian Schottenheimer
and Matt Eaberfoilis they won a fan. He was inactive
for a lot of games. But you know, the talent
that made him a first round pick coming out of
(09:17):
Michigan is still there. He does have to figure out
a way to become a better pass rusher. He said
he lost weight, got in better shape this year. You
don't really see much pass rush. But I mean if
you just played him as a one technique, you know,
just to kind of plug things up in the middle,
he can at least do that for you right now.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Yeah, it's very interesting when you look at the Quinn
Williams trade and the assets the Jets got in return,
and you compare what Dallas did recently in terms of
ship in Michaeh. Parson's the Green Bay.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Well, look, i mean Quinn was the third pick in
the draft, okay, and here you are. I mean, I'm
a little lost, but maybe it's six years now, Eric,
I forget exact.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Seventh do NFL season now, So.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Okay, seventh, okay, but still you're getting a first in
a second for a player that has played a lot
of football, and it's been a good player, been a
Pro Bowl player, has gotten double digit sacks, you know,
from the inside. Like he's had good seasons. We've all
seen him win his one on ones over and over
and over again. I mean, you leave him with one
on one against any Gardner center in the league, he's
(10:25):
probably gonna beat him.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
It's just he's just that good.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
And so that's like he's gonna have a chance to
do that, you know in Dallas right now. But honestly,
for a guy that's played that much football to still
get a one and a two for him, you know,
in succeeding years. I think that's I think that's great value.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
For him, Baldy.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
So I'm jumping around a little bit because there's so
much going on from a Jets perspective, Let's go back
to the cornerback position and that Cincinnati game, a Z
Thomas got his first professional start. He gave up the
touchdown to T Higgins. We all know that, but we
talked about it last week. Chase had nineteen argets and
was held to less than one hundred yards receiving. And
(11:06):
what do you think of his compete level? Also, what
do you think about his physical skill set? Because he's
stepping in the spotlight right now, and from a Jet's perspective,
I'm awfully excited to watch this guy. I really like
his combination of the physicality, the size, and he just
plays with an edge and outside look.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
I couldn't agree with you more. I mean, I think
there was a reason why he was drafted where he
was and and he got a chance to play against
the elite of the elite, and you know Jamar Chase
and T Higgins, and he he didn't back down.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
He competed.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
He made a play on the sideline down the field,
you know, he's just an interception, yep, And so like
I think there's something there. I mean, look, as much
as we all love sauce, you know, he had more
interceptions his rookie year than he had the next three
years combined, you know, And so that's just I mean,
you want your corners to be able to take the
ball away, get your on football is in right now.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
And so.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Look, I thought that he was a value pick when
they got him in the third round this year. And
I think some of the guys like that with that
kind of skill, they just need to play. They they
need to practice. They got a head coach who's been
a cornerback in this league. He understands, you know, the
mindset you got to have, whether it's short term memory
(12:23):
or how to compete, or how to play without getting
your hands on guys, how to locate the ball. I mean,
there's a lot of things that you can get away
with in college because it's just a completely different game.
But I think at this level here, you want to
challenge receivers. You want to be able to see the field.
You want to be able to play man, you want
to play able to play zone. You want to be
(12:44):
able to challenge certain guys and you got to work
on your technique every single day. And I think Aaron
can help him grow with that position right now.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Yeah, there's no doubt about that. And we're we've reached
that point of the season and rookie year where he's
had a lot of practice. Ruck now he's going to
have the opportunity out in games. That's starting Sunday against
the Cleveland Browns and just follow that up with a
Thursday night visit to the Patriots and they'll be facing
Stefan Diggs and Drake May I'm frankly excited about that.
(13:13):
I wanted to ask you about a veteran there on
the outside. Brandon Stevens struggled out of the gate. Yeah,
the last five games, five six games, he's been one
of the better corners in the National Football League. What
have you thought about the way he's gotten acclimated in
the system.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Well, I honestly, I remember when Rob Ryan was in
Baltimore with Brandon Stevens and he told me that this
guy's going to be a starter in this league. Like
he came in through the back door, he rose up,
become a good starter, was a starter on the number
one defensive football only two years ago in Baltimore. And
sometimes you just got to get acclimated.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
You've got the.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Communication, the style of defense, you know, is the ball
coming out quick? Who you're playing against, Like, I think
you just have to learn how to play in a
different uniform.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
And I think it took him a few weeks to
figure that out.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
But you know, they've had incredible performances and back to
back games against Denver, against Carolina where they weren't giving
up big points, you know, and then against those receivers
in Cincinnati. I mean, you're gonna you're gonna give up
some plays there. But I think he's been really solid,
you know, since he's really settled in right now and
figured out who he's playing with and playing you know,
(14:26):
who's who's behind him in the whole communication level.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
I feel like now he can really get into his game.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
So the PDEs are on upswing from Steven's perspective. And
also he brings a physicality to the game, so he's
always been good against the run. Uh, what do you
make of the revamp secondary overall? So you're talking about
two rookies gonna start on Sunday? Got Melchi Moore, What
have you seen from him, because we've spoken a little
(14:54):
bit about A. Z Thomas. But the other guy in
the mix there is Jarvis Brownlee. You made that raid
earlier this season, and he's come on board and taken
over the nickel rains.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Well, I didn't think it's one of the reasons why
they traded you know, Michael Carter. Yes, all what Jarvers
can do from the very first game. I mean he
was traded on a Tuesday and started, uh you know,
on a Sunday and was an impactful player, you know,
right away, and he just needed a chance to play.
He wasn't getting that, I guess in Tennessee. But anyways,
like that, they they liked him so much, and because
(15:27):
I think he's bigger than Michael Carter, like, I think
they liked his physicality and his size and his tackling ability.
They unloaded up, you know, a starter to Philadelphia. They
needed a nickel corner in the worst way. And so
I think there's that. And then Malachi really played well
in this last game, you know, I thought against Cincinnati,
and so uh, you know, rookies got to get on
(15:49):
the field these days. You got to get value for
these guys. He was drafted, you know, pretty high for
a reason, you know, but he played in a major
program at Alabama, and so I think that when you
watch the way Alabama safeties transitioned to the NFL. You know,
Nick Saban coaches coached the secondary when he was there.
He played a lot of NFL coverages at Alabama, a
(16:12):
lot of inverted cover two down in the box, like
the way we saw him play in the last game.
And so now I think he's just and it's a
position of need for the Jets. They need him to
be a solid player at that position.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Man.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
So speaking of Alabama, let's go back to the offensive
side of the ball and talk about Matchi. He was
in Philadelphia most recently, went there in the offseason after
a couple of years with the Houston Texans. He's not
a burner like an A d Mitchell. He's got some
short area quickness and he also has some returnability. And
(16:48):
if you're him, are you looking at this as hey,
this is a great opportunity because you know, the Jets
are trying out some different things in the offensive side
of the ball. At the receiver position.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
He's mostly been a slot receiver.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Eric, you know, when he was in Houston and Philadelphia
really didn't get a chance to play much. He was
a returner. In Philadelphia, they have Devontae Smith, and they
have a J.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Brown.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
They had you know, you know, dot Johan Dotson, So
they had their three guys. He just didn't get on
the field much, but you know, they used him as
a returner. But when he was in Houston when he
did get a chance to play, his best game was
against the Detroit Lions. Caught his one touchdown against the
Lions was you know, one of the few games that
he started. When he was in Houston. He came off
(17:30):
of a major knee injury. You know, at Alabama, but
you know, you play football at Alabama, you know they're
only going to get the very best of the best,
and just to get on the field there, you got
to compete.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
So I think it's a fresh start.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
He really didn't get a chance to play, like I said,
in Philly, but he could get a chance. They've been
looking for that position in New York for a long time.
They've had a lot of guys come through there to
play that slot position. They've drafted different guys. He might get,
you know, a chance to really play in that position
and maybe solidify that position.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Speaking of solidify, what does Harrison Phillips leadership mean to
this group right now the defensive side of the ball
after you make the trade of Quinn Williams to Dallas.
Because he's a guy seeing a little bit of everything
in the National Football League. This is a young roster again,
they're seeing people exit, seeing some young players come in,
(18:23):
and he seems like just the perfect guy there in
the middle to be a stabilizing force on and off
the field.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Well, if you think about Harrison, I mean he's playing
on a great defense last year on a team that
won fourteen games. Okay, they tied for the league lead
in turnovers takeaways last year with thirty three. He was
being coached by Brian Flores, who's a quality coach. He
went up against Aaron Glenn's teams and saw what Detroit
was doing. He's a veteran guy, He's been around. He
(18:54):
was you know, I saw him in training camp up
in Eden Prairie, Minnesota this summer and you know, kind
of having some discussions with him about some things, but
like he didn't think like his time was up there,
and all of a sudden. He gets traded right before
they brought in Javon Hardgrave and Jonathan Allen. He knows
what it's like to get moved in the last second
(19:15):
like this. So he's seeing new guys come in, he's
seeing you know, solid guys leave, like he's seen this
before and what this can be all about. Like he's
got a new home here and he's playing good football
and he's a position of need, and so he's going
to tell some of these young guys that are in
there getting a chance to play, like, play yourself into
(19:35):
a second contract, play yourself into a role in his team.
He's sitting in that defensive line meeting room right now,
and he's the veteran of that room. And so you know,
Quinn's gone. You know, he's played enough this year through
the first eight games where he can have a leadership role.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
And he's a leadership guy.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
You know, he's very smart, he's educated, he understands the
league and the business. I think that it can be
a real good presence in that defensive line room with.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Him and another guy is going to get more opportunities
starting Sunday against the Browns is Juwan Briggs, a former
Cleveland Brown. And he's the guy who's really taking advantage
of his reps here in terms of his role coming
in there, being the rotational guy and providing some pressure
to the quarterback. He's got a couple sacks. What now
(20:23):
he's gonna have more on his plate and we'll have
to see if he can take advantage of it.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Well, I don't think there's any question.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
You know, you can only evaluate these guys when they
get a chance to play and they get on the field.
And so he's got a golden opportunity and a position
of need to go out there and secure himself a career,
not just this year, but going forward. One thing that
these moves that were made yesterday, Eric and look, but
the message is clear to anybody. I don't care if
(20:53):
you're Harrison Phillips or who you are. This is a
new regime that's evaluing all their these players going forward.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Who do we like, who do we keep? Who do
we make our next you know group?
Speaker 2 (21:07):
Uh, you know, our next fraternity that we're gonna build
this team around. Everybody gets that opportunity to do it
right now. Depends on how they play, perform, prepare, you know, production,
all that stuff. Matters, and it's it's a new set
of eyes making all the evaluations everything that happened before
all the guys got drafted by you know, Joe Douglass
(21:27):
and all the other guys Like it's it's a new
set of eyes right now, and you get a chance
to build your career like honestly from this day going forward.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Let's take a quick break and then we're gonna dive
into the Jets Browns matchup Sunday at Medelete Stadium. The
Official Jets Podcast is presented by Kendra Scott, the jewelry company,
The Shining Bright and Doing Good. Personalize your game day
and look by shopping spirited styles and so much more
at your local Kendra Scott store or Kendrascott dot com,
(22:00):
where a team spirit meets personal style. All right, Paul,
the message was clear this week from Aaron Glenn. I
sat with him in the studio and he said, make
no mistake about it. Yes, we made these trades because
we think this is best for our team and this
entire organization. But we are out there to win this
(22:20):
week and for every game remainer remaining here on our schedule.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
So and you know, Jet fans are gonna get a
chance right at the Jet Life Stadium this weekend to
see what this not just a new team, but what
the news team. Can they come off their biggest win
obviously their only win the bit, but the best that
they played. Can they come off of that win where
they did everything well? The quarterback played his best game,
(22:46):
the line blocked their best the running backs had their
best day. Right the defense made two stops at the
end of the game. They have a bye week. They
make these blockbuster trades. The Jet fans want to see
what do we have going for forward? Do we have
something to look forward to? Can they stack like Cleveland is?
If you look at Cleveland right now, it's rookies everywhere.
(23:08):
Harrold Fannon is a rookie. Dylan Gabriel is a rookie.
You know the running back Queen Shawn Judkins is a rookie.
They got a rookie Mason Graham. They got a rookie
squaestionis or a middle linebacker.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
It's it's rookie.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
They got a rookie three way player that plays defense, offense,
and special teams. Like it's all rookies. Like they've turned
the page. They've you know, and and so they're still
led by Miles Garrett, you know, and all that kind
of stuff. But they're they're a team that's building for
the future. And they've just changed their offensive coordinator. Stefanski
(23:41):
just turned it over to his offense coordinator called the plays.
So we'll see how that goes. But they're a team
that is struggling, just like the Jets. But what the
Jets want to want, what Aaron wants is for this
not to be a distraction. Like we're building and game planning,
and we saw them as an offensive line the best
game of the year against Cincinnati. Now Cleveland's different. They're better.
(24:04):
They're much better upfront. Like you're gonna need a great game,
a great game plan to handle Miles Garrett, but they've
got other guys that can beat you. They're a pressman
coverage team. Jim Schwartz has a Super Bowl ring to
his name in Philadelphia. He's a good coordinator, really good coordinator.
And they're trying to do the same thing. They're trying
to stack wins, and so they've got one more than
(24:26):
the Jets. But this is a good a good This
gives a good contest at home to be able to
get your second win in a row and maybe build
something going forward.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Garrett can be a one man wrecking crew. And which
was so fascinating that last time out for Cleveland because
they had to buy Sunday as well. As they went
to New England. He sacked Drake May five times and
they still lost that game by about twenty. With that
being said, you mentioned in the Jets offensive line, and
(24:59):
they are building that foundation up front. Garrett, how much
movement do you anticipate from him on Sunday? And what
do you expect when he sees are my Membu? And
also and or I should say Olu Fashno.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Well, Justin I mean not that I want to bring
up past history, but Justin Field's first start in the
NFL was in Cleveland and Miles Garrett put him in
the graveyard a few times that day. So did Gjevian Clowney.
I'll never forget it. Like I think he was sacked
nine times.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
You know, Miles Garrett wants to go test. I know him,
I know his mentality. He's gonna line up over you know, Olu,
He's gonna line up over Membu. He's gonna test both
of them, and then you know last week, look he
got five sacks. It's five sacks.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
But it wasn't game changing type plays.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Eric.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
They still overcame the sacks, the loss of yardage. They
didn't turn the ball over, you know, and they were
still able to hit their their big plays.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Uh you know. But so he's gonna make plays, he
just is.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
It's good for all ofer to go up against him,
and I like to see him go up there one
on one, like, yes, you can chip them, you can slide,
there's things you can do. But I also want to
see both those guys line up on the league's best
and see what that looks like and feels like, you know,
when you've got to protect your quarterback. Now, Justin can
get out of harm's way. You know, if you get
beat quickly, he can rescue the play.
Speaker 3 (26:25):
But I'd like to see.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
These guys go up there and feel his punch and
see what that's like, see what the best is like.
Because honestly, as you're a young player and you block,
you know a guy like Miles Garrett, just the way
Will Campbell did on Sunday on a couple of occasions,
you come out of there's feeling better about yourself and
about your ability. It's a good measuring stick for these
(26:46):
young guys.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And the Jets said great
balance against the Bengals. This is a totally different challenge,
but it's going to be fun to see what the
Jets offense looks like against one of the better defenses
in the league. I mean, forget about the record. I
know they're two and six. This Cleveland defense is top
(27:08):
five by any measure if you really look at them.
Game plan wise, the Jets got that balance going with
the rush attack and the passing attack against Cincinnati, nine
different pass catchers and all Garrett Wilson anticipates Aaron Glenn
anticipates Garret Wilson to be back in practice this week.
We'll have to see if he's out there on the
(27:29):
field on Sunday. With all that being said, and you
mentioned Schwartz before, what should the offensive game plan be
against this Cleveland defense.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Well, I think you've got to start with, you know,
emphasizing the run in different types of runs. It could
be fly sweeps like we saw Isaiah Williams in the
last game against Cincinnati for eighteen yards. It could be
different things with you know Adams or with Bresee it
could be with two tight ends, it could be spread
him out and try to get you know, lanes winning inside.
(28:05):
You got to get s questions you're blocked. He's one
of those linebackers that if you don't block him, he'll
make every tackle, and so you know that's that's gonna
be paramount to be able to get.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Up to him.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
But you know, Schwartzey plays a lot of man coverage,
you know, and so you know, sometimes the quarterback, if
he scrambles and the guys are down the field playing man,
you could get some big running lanes.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
So it'll be.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Interesting to see if Schwartzy decides to play more zone
to keep more eyeballs on justin in case he does
break the pocket and scramble, or if he stays in
his mand demanded schemes, because that can vary depending on
who the quarterback is defense.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
I don't want to oversimplify things here at Baldy, but
when I look at this Cleveland offense, they started with
Joe Flackle at the beginning of the year, they've gone
to Dylan Gabriel. They've struggled to throw the football. You
mentioned Judkins before, for me, what I'm circling as far
as this matchup is concerned. What does the Jets rush
(29:01):
defense look like in week one minus Quinn Williams and
can they take away junkins.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
I think jud Kinds are really good back is really
good back. Maybe he's had some big runs. And Dylan
Sampson is the third down back. He's the other rookie
right now, but he came out of Tennessee, I think.
But yeah, they played both rookie backs. Harold Fanning is
a really elusive tight end. People thought they might trade
(29:31):
in Djoku because he's been that good. But look, Dylan
Gabriel's left handed. They don't see left handed quarterbacks in
the sleep. You know, Like he's a left hander, so
you know you want to get your pressure.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
From the other side.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
But you know, the interior of this offensive line, you know, Buttonio, Wyatt, Teller,
po Chick. They're as good as any three interior linemen
in this whole league. Then they've been like that. They
can cut you up, carve you up in a lot
of different ways, and so your fun mentals, your techniques
(30:02):
are paramount. They love to pull Potonio in the power
Run game. He's excellent at it. And then Judkins is
just a patient runner that's got power and explosiveness, and
so he's a difficult guy to get to the ground.
He breaks a lot of tackles. Yeah, they've got to
work cut out because of their foundation. And we'll see
they got a new offensive coordinator, we'll see. But that's
(30:23):
typically been the foundation to Stefanski's team is to really
be able to run the ball effectively. I don't believe
that their receivers, you know, whether it's Tillman or Judy, like,
I just don't think they're great players, you know.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
So I think that you know, they throw to the
tight ends and they throw to the backs.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Right now, Well, the big picture, let's end right there.
You mentioned foundation. The Jets have five first round picks
in twenty twenty six and twenty twenty seven, two in
twenty twenty six, three in twenty twenty seven. You could
have four picks in the top fifty next April. But
everybody within these walls, our focus remains focused on Sunday
(31:07):
as far as the players and the coaching staff are concerned. Well,
the personnel department continues to do their job as far
as trying to improve this roster each and every day.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Well, look, I mean the winning teams in this business
that win consistently, they draft and they develop players. Okay,
they developed their own and when they become good players,
they reward them with second contracts. That's the foundation of
winning teams. That's what Kansas City has done. That's what
Buffalo has done. That's what the Eagles are doing. And
(31:36):
they sprinkle in the trades and free agency to address
weaknesses when they miss on a pick or they miss
on a player, and it's going to happen. But forget
about all that right now. It's still about developing young players.
And the Jets are full of young players. We've mentioned
a bunch of them here today. I think Justin Fields
still wants to prove that he could be a starting
(31:58):
quarterback if he can play and pick up where he
left off against Cincinnati, against this defense, and make good decisions,
take care of the football like he has been doing
all year, make the throws that are there, you know,
not be hesitant to pull the trigger. Play with no fear,
like he can still have a future wherever it might be.
(32:20):
It might just still be in New Yorks, like he's
still playing for that deal, and so we saw bres
Hall have one of his best games ever. You know,
he still wants to show to the world that he's
a quality back and be mentioned in that realm. And
so it's still about developing these guys. Tipman is still
developing at bright guard. You know You've got you know,
(32:42):
Simpson is still developing with that left side. And so
I want to see what Maca Taylor you know, does
here going forward. I mean, caught his first touchdown pass
against Cincinnati. I want to see more of those.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Baldy a lot to play for. It's gonna be fun
watching this team not only Sunday, but the following Thursday
as they go and face the New England Patriots. But
great job today breaking it all down. It's been an
eventful week for the Green and White.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
It has been, and there's a lot of changes. But
I like Aaron Glenn's approach right now. They're not giving
up on the season. It's not over. It's about because honestly,
he wants to be here for a long time. Like
draft status, they've got all their picks. They need to
win as many games as they can. They have to
show us the fans and his team and the regime
(33:34):
that they're all about developing and improving and playing the
best football, you know, as we go into November here
going forward.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Well said buddy. We'll see you next week.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Okay, buddy. Thanks Eric,
