Speaker 1 (00:09):
Well, I'm over to the point after presented by your
neighborhood Ford store in the Steelers Pro shop. Get it
direct from the team at shop dot Steelers dot com.
Steelers defeat the Cleveland Browns twenty three to nine. You
improved to form one first AFC North game for the
Pittsburgh Steelers, who have another one coming up in short
order on Thursday in Cincinnati against the Bengals. Alongside Matt

(00:30):
Williamson and Mike Persuda, I'm rob King, So guys, let's
be in with some quick, you know, overview thoughts of
the Steelers victory before we get into some of the
specific players and matchups from this victory.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Matt very businesslike performance. It wasn't you know, if you
weren't a Steeler Browns fan or weren't glutas.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Game, he'd be like, Ah, this isn't all that exciting
of a game.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
But I thought the Steelers controlled it mostly from start
to finish. I'm getting really excited about the defense. I mean,
it is so disruptive. They cause a lot of chaos.
They have all these attacking defenders. Their health Herbig's a
star in the making. They may have dropped for interceptions,

(01:13):
or it could have had four turnovers or so live
even you know, just tip all yeah, right, I mean
they were all close and none of them were to
be fair.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
One was two guys on the same pass, so I
don't know if that's.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Four or five.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Just quickly I want to jump in because you know
what you talk about, Well, you get all those interviews,
all those interviews, all those interceptions and turnovers in New England.
If you don't have those, you don't win the game.
These things some breaks sometimes even out. I like when
a break evens out, but you still win the right
you didn't need it. You didn't need the breaks to
go your way because they they clearly now the the

(01:53):
the you know, the the offensive players out there will say, well,
they dropped interceptions.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
That's why they're playing defense. On offense.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
You have to understand how hard it is when you're
not the intended receiver to turn around and find the
ball right when you're turning around later in the offensive
player or you know there was an overthrown ball that
hit one of the Steelers pretty much in the bread basket. Well,
there's a lot of stuff going on in front of you.
You're you're looking to make a hit, not catch the ball.

(02:21):
It always looks behind you, right, It always looks terrible
when you don't pick one up. But there's reasons for
that other than the fact that you're playing defense.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I wasn't even complaining about how there could have been more,
but there absolutely could have been more. The game would
have been much more even lopsided. And frankly, you know,
like the analytics folks will tell you, oh, turnovers kind
of find their way. Not with this team. This team
creates turnovers. They're built for it. A lot of it
starts with their pass rush. And the other thing I
know I've stood out was not only creating so much

(02:49):
chaos on defense, but very few.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Negative plays when they were on offense.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
I mean, they're not getting tackles for loss, they're not
thaking sacks, they're not turned the ball over, they're getting
two or three yard they're not you know, they're not
dominating with seven yards of carry, but they're moving the
ball every time.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
Right, Mike, I'm gonna go with some low hanging But
what to me at least is overlooked fruit. And that's
Aaron Rodgers is the right guy in the right place
at the right time. I thought he actually missed a
couple of throws yesterday, more than I've seen him miss
to date.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
But the Darnell on the out pattern, Metcalf on the
go route.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Maybe maybe two go routes to Metcalf, one that was
underthrown and one that hit the guy in the back.
Maybe placement needed to be a little better. But what
he is doing, and maybe if you want to boil
his contributions to the twenty twenty five Steelers down to
one play, it would be the Connor Hayward touchdown catch.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
So he ends up out on the wing and it's
the third option.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
He's literally I hate when people overuse the word literally,
but he was literally pointing, go over there and I'll
hit you a touchdown. I mean, this guy is the
quarterback this franchise has been thirsting for since Ben Roethlisberger left.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
They've been dying a.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
Thirst for this kind of play at the most critical position.
They're getting it, and nobody, it seems as talking about
it nationally. I guess because so many people just thought
it was the dumbest thing.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
In the world.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
And why are they waiting?

Speaker 4 (04:18):
And this guy's washed, I guess nobody can acknowledge that boy,
he's still got a lot of juice left. And something
that struck me after the game listening to the Mike
Tomlin press conference before I conducted another edition of the
should Be Award winning postgame show when these Steelers Audio
Network Sure, Mike Tomlin was asked a question along the
lines of, hey, I no, Rodgers has twenty one years

(04:41):
of experience, but is it possible he's getting more comfortable?
And Tomlin said absolutely, He's still a new guy on
a new team, knew everything. He could keep getting better,
and as that offensive line continues to get better, he's
going to keep getting better. And if the running game improves,
as it is apparently trending toward doing, he's going to

(05:01):
keep getting better. They got a quarterback, man, I've heard
for five years, Oh, you don't have a quarterback, you
can't win.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Now they have one, they can win.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, he was, you know, and we were talking about
this before we came on the show that I've been
mystified by, or was mystified it's over now about nobody
picking the Steelers to make the playoffs, even make the playoffs,
and I'm like, they're a better team all around the board,
including at the most positioned important position all of sports,

(05:33):
which is the quarterback position.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
And it's good. I just said it's getting to the
point now.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
And I mentioned this in the locker room, where I'm like,
not even it's not even on my radar. I made
the analogy to when I used to do Penguins post
game shows. Yeah, Crosby had a goal in assist. Yeah,
but what else happened.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
To the game?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Right?

Speaker 1 (05:50):
You know, you kind of shove him aside. We know
he's going to do the job. I just have no
doubt he's going to do the job.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
Let me just pile on a little bit. Apparently among
the people overlooking him, Jim Schwartz, a defensive coordinator of
Cleveland Browns, is apparently one of those people.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Now, let me just.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Say he's the top of the food chain in the
defensive coordinator world, and he's forgotten more about defense than
a lot of people will ever know, myself included. But
how in God's name can you look at that Steeler
lineup that they threw at the Browns. Your receivers are
Dk Metcalf and then Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson, Ben Skernic.

(06:33):
How does Dk Metcalf get the amount of one on
one coverage that he was afforded. And when you covered
DK Metcalf one on one, do you think Aaron Rodgers
is not going to see that and exploit it.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
It could have been worse. He could have hit two more.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
What was Jim Schwartz thinking in terms of defending the Steelers?

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Who are they covering?

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Yeah, and he's covering them with the guy they traded
for two days ago.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
In fairness to Jim Schwartz, when there is single high,
Rodgers is only going to go to Metcalf every single time.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
So there you know what they do exactly.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
You know, there's an old saying in football you always
have a chance because the other team has coaches too,
But on a more serious man, we always here every
time they lose. I hear Mike Tomblin got out coached. Yeah,
well they out coached Jim Schwartz yesterday. And Jim Schwartz
is as good as it gets in terms of defensive coordinator.
So I guess maybe Arthur Smith has a little something going.

(07:28):
I guess when you know Terrell Austin's defense, uh did
better than Brian Floores defense in Dublin.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Maybe terror Austin's got a little something going.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Maybe I don't agree with you more that the coaching
staff has not gotten nearly as enough credit as I mean,
we've got to the point where we're not trying to
burn the facility down and fire everybody, but at least
give him. Had him on the back, baby, I mean,
that wouldn't be the end of the world. But I
also think Rogers' contributions at the line of scrimmage remarkable.
To your point, if he sees single high, he's going
to decay. I mean, if he saw someone not name

(08:00):
Sauce Gardner on DK, he's going to DK in week one.
The thing I opened the show with was very few
negative plays on offense.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Because he always has them in the best looks. Yeah. Always.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
He did avoid a sack by showing it over to
gain Thank you so much for your yards for reception.
Hope that's not a bonus clause in the contract. But
you know, I do think that what we're starting to see,
Matt is the offense rolling together. So the running game

(08:33):
isn't perhaps where it's going to be, but back to
back weeks in which you get over one hundred yards
rushing and so you are you are creating a conundrum
for the opposing team, which is, if we move up
to try to stop the run, well, that's necessarily going
to leave DK Metcalf with some opportunities. And if you

(08:55):
if you concentrate too much on Metcalf, well you're going
to be able to run the football as well. So
they're starting to get more of that balance at every
offense I think seeks.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yeah, and for Rogers to be at the maximum's powers,
you got to give him a couple outlets. You know,
you can't just be like, boy, you have the worst
running game in the league. He checks to a run,
it doesn't go anywhere. And I do think the running game,
the O line in particular, I thought both tackles had
strong games in run and pass against Miles Garrett, by
the way, whose name did not come up.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Very often after I did not mention him once during
game action. I don't believe really, I don't think he
made because I don't think he I don't think he
made a tackle.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
Yeah, one one or two tackles, two assists?

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Wow? Right, so it should be crossby.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
And so, by the way, that's a great run defense
they played against. You get the single high because they
want to play bigger boxes, they want to play bigger people.
I mean, they're not a light floorz nickel dime type
of defense at all.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
And three point six yards per carry that's not lighting
the world on fire. No, But this is a defense
allowing three yards per carry and seventy five yards rushing
per game. So you exceed that by what another third
in both categories. That's that's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
And the final numbers don't tell the whole story because
once they got to twenty three six, right, the game
was over, right, and then they get the possession where
they're just running into fifteen guys.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
And killing Klatte, which is exactly if you look at
Caleb Johnson's number. So six for fifteen, well two or
three of those were we're gonna run. You might as
well just put up the neon sign. You're gonna run
it here, here's Caleb.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Go ahead, you know.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
But on the way to twenty three six, it was
twenty one carries for ninety nine yards.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yeah, four point.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
Seven Yeah good cos Okay, that's out standing.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
And two of my big concerns I had. I had
concerns on a number levels for this game.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Number one.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
I've been around the AFC North enough over the years
to know it's very hard to figure out. So you
take nothing for granted going into these games. Right number two,
I was concerned about Judkins running the ball on the Steelers, absolutely,
very concerned about that.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Dudkins and Garrett my two biggest concerns. They didn't do
a thing.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
And I was concerned about the steal ability to run
against Cleveland, and they won both of those battles. Mike
Toma talked about after the game. He said, the agenda,
get Cleveland in third and long, stay out a third
and long.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
You do that by running the ball.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
That's how you helped neutralize Miles Garrett. Good stuff all
across the board. And by they would mind the penalties
because they were so aggressive, And by aggressive I mean violent.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
Uh, you know you gotta break You're gonna make an omalt.
You gotta break a few eggs sometimes. Now, there was
some sloppy stuff that they have to clean up, but
that had not been an issue in the first four games.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
And Mike Tomlin said as much after the game. He
wouldn't he picked on that immediately. If I guess to
find something, I think he just wanted to.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Say something, but I mean that was an outlier. Worle
agreed right that.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Yeah, oh yeah. And by the way, it.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Wasn't for a ton of yardis there was ten ten penalties,
but it wasn't for like over one hundred yards.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
So Rudolph three three kneel downs. Otherwise it's twenty five
for one hundred even if even if you say, okay,
well they ran the ball into the pile, yet it's
still four yards to carry against a team allowing three.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
That's good stuff. And there were two. There were a
couple of I.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Didn't get a did you guys get a good look
at the penalty called on Peppers on the punt?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
I did, I didn't. They played it pretty well?

Speaker 5 (12:16):
Was it was it a penalty?

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Because I couldn't get a good look at the replay
from from our broadcast position.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
I thought it was iffy at best. But I also
thought the Browns kind of got jobbed on that running
into the punter penalty.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
And then the other one was things.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
Have a tendency if not even out. Sometimes you get
a break, sometimes they get a break. You just got
to play around.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
The Peppers won by the letter of the law was
a penalty, okay, But I mean he kind of blocks him.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
On Oh get back, okay, So he leaned into him.
I couldn't tell because you're running down there. All I
saw was him running down the fel with his arms
up in the air. I didn't see him. But if
he leans into him, it's penalty.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
He leaned into him like he was shielding him from
the puck in the corner, right.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Yeah, what a lot of hockey in the The other
one was Jerry Judy Flinging.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Who is a defender? Was it?

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Was it Joey Porter June down towards the goal line
and that last drive where they scored, he flung them
to the ground and then they called defensive pass interference
on a third down in completion.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
I thought that was.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
A It wasn't the best most curious golf.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
And by the way, the other one that got me
too was there's a flag down and then the guys.
The only thing I could say is they began chatting
like there wasn't like usually there's like a little hey,
this is on sixty seven, okay, so and then the
mic goes on. These guys are like gabbing at the
middle of the field, like, you know, hey, how are
the wife and kids? I know they weren't doing that,
but long discussions not only a ton of penalties, but

(13:36):
long discussions in between.

Speaker 5 (13:38):
That was a very long game.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Well.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
It was the other thing that I found fascinating about
Mike Tomlins postgame, when rarely do I say Mike Tomlarins
postgame is fascinating. But he talked about Ronald Torbert's crew
and he said, we scouted the official rights, sure, and
these guys were flag happy, right, and we should have
known anything close had a chance to get called. So
that's all us pecifically me. But he made his point

(14:07):
that was pretty cool. But the whole you know, he said,
we had a couple of agendas. Run stopped run. I
mean they have that every week.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Right, but boy, especially against team like this, it's just
didn't it.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah, And you know what, I think that and you know,
we'll get into the specifics, but if you're going to
take a large view of the defense, uh, Mike, to me,
it is a defense trending in the right direction. I
thought the Jets matchup was a bad matchup. You didn't
have harmon in that game. Then you get you know,
goes out, you get Yeah, the first two weeks were rough.

(14:38):
You did have some injuries. Deshaun Elliott, who I think
is just a great player, you know, I I started
to call him very good. I I I'm beginning to
think that I'm not I'm damning him with faint praise.
I just think he's so good and so important to
the team. You know, Uh, he wasn't he was not there,
and they you know, high Smith is out. I think

(14:58):
it's whatever you want to say, injuries, not playing well,
gelling together, just just getting beat however you want to
say it. Mike, I see this as a defense. It's
trending in the right direction.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Oh, I don't think there's any question. A lot was
made of yesterday being the first time the whole defense.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
Was together, right, And that's true, But hey, don't count
on it. I mean, yeah, for sure, for sure, guys
were going out yesterday and coming back in A defensive
back was going in at all times.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
One of the things I heard a lot about in
training camp and and bought into, was that these guys.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Have great depth.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
They do, so who's out there is who's out there,
and those guys got to play. What I think is
trending in the right direction, is how they are becoming
more I guess violent is the word aggressive? You know,
poor tackling early in the season, they're they're playing kind
of a vicious game. Now they are extracting a pound

(15:55):
of flesh on these tackles, and they're also eliminating the
communications gaffes that well. I guess the classic example of
eighty one yard or to Jordan Addison in Dublin.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
I mean, how does that happen when you're up and
the only thing they can do is throw a deep exactly?

Speaker 4 (16:12):
That's you know, new guys are not if you're playing safety.
And I wonder if this is why Chuck Clark didn't
dress yesterday. I don't know who was a fault of
that play, but I know Slay and Elliott both went
to cover an out along the line of scrimmage, which
isn't going to hurt you, and Chuck Clark was a
safety on that side of the field and Addison just
ran right by him. If you are a safety, okay,

(16:35):
you're the last guy. Yes, it's like the goalie getting
out of the way and expecting somebody else to stop
the puck.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, there is nobody else. You are the tender of
the goal. You are the literal safety. I don't care
what the call is.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
If you see a guy running, run with him. You
know what, right I mean? Little situational awareness. Now, I
don't know if that was.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
That's why Clark didn't dress or they just thought the
Peppers was better for this matchup. One thing this staff
is repeatedly showing us is one week a guy can
be all but forgotten, and then next week he can
be front and center.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
On offense and on d Yes. Okay, we're gonna take
a break. We have plenty more to get to. Following
this Steelers twenty three to nine victory. They're first over
an AFC North opponent, their first game against an AFC
North opponent. Let me continue with a point after presented
by your neighborhood Ford Store and by the Steelers Pro shop.
Get it direct from the team at shop dot Steelers

(17:39):
down field, looking throws back across his body.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Get caught in the end zone. What a grab my cutter.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Hayward macnificit thrunt by Rogers.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
And Hayward with his first touchdown of the season.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
So we welcome you back to the point after, presented
by your neighborhood Ford Store and the Steers Pro Shop.
Get it direct from the team at shop dot Steelers
dot com, here on DVE and Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
And loved that play.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Loved Rogers, you know, as Mike talked about it, kind
of directing traffic. And you know, it reminds me a
little bit of uh, you know you're talking about Mike
was Socket earlier about you know, Aaron Rodgers adjusting to
the team. We've been using a lot of hockey nowogies.
So I'll go ahead and throw Mary on the meal
out there right like he's gonna make you better and

(18:28):
and he will adjust to your game, but you also
have to be able to just tell me, Rob get
in front of the puck and get your stick down,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
All day? Right.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
I talked to Warren Young about that, and he's just
what a joy it was to play on Mario's wing
for one year and what it did for his career,
you know.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Because I used to play a lot of celebrity hockey
and I was Robbie Brown to Warren Young's Mario.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Are you no I would go stay at the front
of that he would knock it off my elbow.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Uh, that was a great play by Rogers, and it
does take and he singled out Connor. Heyward said, you
know he's a smart football player at the end of that,
and you've got to educated.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, it's so it's.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
A little counter.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
Education.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so it might be counterintuitive, but you've
got to you know, he had to work away from
Rogers on that play to get open and just a
good play Matt for the touchdown.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Yeah, and he throws against his body, against the grain.
I mean that that takes us still a level of
arm strength and on the move and all the things
that everybody questioned him. You know, to Mike's point, this
guy's no good anymore. Why do you want him? He
might not be what he was in terms of a
passer a mover, but he was the best we'd ever
seen before Mahomes in that era. And now maybe if

(19:52):
he's eighty percent of that, great, but he's one hundred
percent above the neck and orchestrating things and moving players
standing of defenses.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
They throw touchdowns now. I mean.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Dale and I joked for five years, you know, like
there was years, they threw thirteen touchdown passes. I mean,
since Ben retired, only two guys have thrown more touchdown
passes than Rogers in a Steelers uniform. And he's gonna
pass them both.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
In the next Like he's played five games.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
He played five games. Pickett and Wilson had more, but barely.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
He used the term, you know, thirsting for a quarterback
when we opened this show, and it's it's as if
some people they're dying at thirst and you offer them
one of those gallon jugs of water or what you
put on your set. You know, it's probably more than
a gallon, and they say, nah, I'm good. What are
you thinking that?

Speaker 3 (20:43):
That touchdown? The Hayward Again.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
I keep harping on it because I just think it's
such an all encompassing play for what's going on here.
I saw on Twitter, which you know I hate, but
every once in a while it has its purposes. There
was a somebody from the stands or maybe a guy
in the back of the end zone had an angle
on it where Ronnie Hickman the safeties full extension and

(21:07):
the ball just crosses before his reach, and it was
it was a tough catch, but the ball was right
where it needed to be.

Speaker 3 (21:15):
The only Rogers can't do is run forward. He's not
so great at that.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
And right, you know, I hope he stops trying to
do that. Well, but the head in the arm and
the everything else that's the arm still he the throw.
I will I will say this. I said it at
the time and I'll say it again. I am highly
doubtful that we will see a better throw by any
quarterback in the NFL than the one to Friarmouth in

(21:40):
the Seattle. Oh my god, that pat that couldn't catch.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
But it was he was covered sixty yards downfield, and
I went back and look to make sure it traveled
sixty yards in the air with Rogers rolling to his right,
throwing a little bit across his body, and he hit
him right in tried and Firemooth was covered. It wasn't
like he was wide open downfield. There's a defender on

(22:05):
his hip. That's we won't see a better throw all year.
We will not see a better throw all year.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
And his release is so great, I mean the different
release points. Yeah, you know, the stap into the wrist,
it's not elongated at all.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
You know, we started with it. We mentioned that how
he missed a couple of throats. It's like, you know again,
ah well, sid didn't win that that that face off
and the you know in the second second period in
their zone.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
So what I just mentioned it because it's a typical
I know, I know, I know. It was so.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
One of the guys he singled out for praise. Thought
it was going to be interesting, Matt to see how
the different running backs were used. He mentioned Jalen Warren.
He caught him slippery. He had the one run where
it was his eleven yard run. He slipped out of
a tackle by Alex Wright, a defensive tackle who had
him dead to rights one step later, which shows you

(22:57):
acceleration and power. Ronnie Hickman comes up and he completely
bowls him over and then it takes four guys to
bring him down for an eleven yard game. I wanted
to point out that because of the way he runs
and the quality of his runs, and he was their
best runner yesterday. And then this is where he first
cut his teeth and came to This year's attention was

(23:17):
that back's on backers drill Carson Schwessinger, who's a terrific
young linebacker for the Browns blitzed, and I mean he
jolted to a stop.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
When Warren hit him that blitz. Yeah, he's just a
good football player.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
If you box score scouted the running backs, you'd be like, Eh,
nobody really stood out.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
It's a committee. I'm not sure who the number one
guy is.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
It couldn't be more clear who the best dude is,
who's the most valuable in all areas. He's a great receiver.
He hates getting tackled, and he's extremely hard to tackle,
and that translates week after week. He loves protection and
he's violent in it and he always has the right assignment.
And I think Gamwell has a role. I mean, I
think Rogers has said several times, I'd love throwing to
that guy. You know, he's good in protection for his size,

(24:02):
and we saw him in spot duty in Dublin. Great,
you know, but that's spot duty. I'd love to see
Caleb Johnson get a little more. And that was a
great way to at least get him the football with
a lead, get him in stadium, as coach likes to say.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
But Warren's the guy and he's really good at what
he does.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
He get another rough backs on backers. I remember the
little flip pass from Rogers to Warren. Yes, that was
a third and three from Steelers twenty eight in the
third quarter. I talked about this play a lot on
the morning show because it's one of my favorite plays
from the game yesterday.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
They line up and.

Speaker 4 (24:35):
Garrett's on right end, and the whole line blocks down
to the right. So Garrett's coming and it's Warren against
Garrett backs on backers. He didn't knock him down, but
Warren stood him up, attacked him and knocked him back
temporarily stopped his progress. Garrett keeps pursuing Rogers. Eventually he's

(24:57):
moving right now. He loops back to the left and
he's running and trying to figure out something to do.
So Warren sees, okay, he might need an outlet and
bolts up just to try to make himself available. Broderick
Jones peels off and chases and just kind of gets
in the way. He didn't really block airt but he

(25:18):
sort of nudged them a little bit. Gave Rogers just
enough time to flip that thing forward to Warren and
they get six yards in a first down. So Warren
was the pass protection back and he caught the pass, yeah, and.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
It wasn't against and he engaged one of the.

Speaker 4 (25:33):
Great rushers of all time and another hustle played by
Broderick Jones. We talked a lot about that fumble in
the Vikings game in Dublin where he chased Rogers on
the scramble and was in position. I mean, these guys,
they're competing for every blade of grass. All of a
sudden last two weeks, that effort level has been through
the roof and I don't know that.

Speaker 3 (25:54):
I saw that.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
Before the Vikings game and I asked Cam Heyward about that. Hey,
you guys had all the built in in tangibles going
to Ireland. Are you gonna be able to ramp that
up again? He's like, don't worry, We're building. It's a
long process. We're gonna keep building, keep building, keep building.

Speaker 3 (26:12):
Those veterans seem to know it.

Speaker 5 (26:16):
Rogers, you need to be peaking in December, not now.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
Now.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
You need to win and hopefully some things kind of
fall in place. And one of the big things, Matt,
you alluded to this, but one of the big things
is those tackles. And you know, talking to Max Starks
and I asked him because Max had to play, you know,
had to switch positions. How long does it take? Roger
Jones was playing right tackle, now he's left tackle. Caltano

(26:41):
was a left tackle in college. Now he's a right tackle.
And I know that they've had a little bit of experience,
but he said, the biggest thing is not are you
capable physically the big the big thing is adjusting to
playing a different size. That's what Max said. I asked him,
how long does it take? Five to six weeks? Well,
here we are and and uh, you know, I don't
have the luxury of watching I would love to as

(27:04):
a fan just to watch, Hey, what's going on with
Broderick Jones and Miles Garrett, uh Faltado and Alex Wright, Hey,
uh Siamalo and McCormick against Blik Collins, he's been tremendous
for him. Yeah, came in with three and a half
sacks and they had some pressure, but those guys had
to have had another strong step.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
Forward, in extremely strong step forward.

Speaker 2 (27:27):
And I mean like going into the game, anyone that
watches the Browns was said, advantage d line right, no doubt,
And that's true against just about every O line in
the league. But it was way more confident in the
Browns D line and what they've done and the depth
and the star power and some of the young guys
and Collins as opposed to where's the Steeler O line

(27:47):
at this step of the this step of the way,
now we almost have to throw in the Washington Anderson absolutely,
you know contributions and what they they're bringing to the table.
He played close to twenty snaps Anderson Washington again led
the team. Yeah, and he's out there. He's the number
one tight end, folks. We get used to it, and
he should be. He's a nightmare to play against. But
I think these tackles are developing exactly how you want

(28:10):
them to.

Speaker 3 (28:11):
You mentioned Max.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
I learned something from Max at the combine asking that
same question. He's like, there's things you wouldn't think about.
Left verst right. He's like my outside leg, the muscles
on the inside get much longer because that first step
is so deep, and your your plant leg, the muscles
develop and get stronger and shorter, so you almost have

(28:34):
to like work out different so that this outside leg
is more flexible and can get that big first step,
and this one's stronger as like your post leg I
always thought it was like wiping your butt left handed,
but there's more than that.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
Yeah, I think the best way to avoid that is
just to simply have no muscle, right.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
You don't have to worry about which way the muscles.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
Scratch seventy four is eligible stuff. Yeah, six rushes for
forty six yards. That's seven point seven per carry.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
When he was down there, when he was extra they
ran it because the didn't always.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
Run it when he was now he did have a
holding penalty. I Spencer.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
Yeah, passing Rogers was four for four for thirty nine yards,
and that included that little dump off the game well
for minus nine. Yeah, so I mean it really was.
They were popping plays. I mean Johnson had a run
of nine. John Smith had a run of ten. Warren
had a run of eleven. Remember when first two games
of the season they had one explosive run combined. Yeah,

(29:31):
explosive being ten yards or more. Yeah, that's happening with regularity.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
The last couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
Yeah, Caleb had he had the old platform nine and
three quarters. We thought he had ten. They originally caught
him ten and they adjusted it back. And by the way,
you know, Aaron Rodgers was asked earlier in the year
about Roder Jones and came to his defense and praised
him again last night in the postgame press conference. Another
guy he praised Mike was Jalen Ramsey two sacks in

(30:00):
this game. You know, I think most of us were
pretty sure he wasn't going to play and if there
was any chance, you know, Cincinnati is the kind of
game that you you have Ramsey and Slay and Joey
Porter four to play against those elite receivers. But Jalen
Ramsey and and Aaron Rodgers just was effusive and his

(30:21):
praise as a teammate and as a person to be
able to come back from an injury in which I
don't think anybody expected him to play, and not only
playing the game, but have his usual impact with two sacks.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Yeah, and particularly the stuff that Rogers talked about relative
to Ramsey, the teammate in Ramsey the example, I mean,
we were all.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
At camp stood out immediately first day, right, just like,
oh my god, that's why they got this guy. Guy's
really good.

Speaker 4 (30:49):
You heard you know, he's on this I think fourth
NFL team and he's still in the prime of his career.
And he's an all pro, so you kind of wonder,
all right, why does he keep changing locations like what's
going on?

Speaker 2 (31:01):
But people giving up like first round picks for him.
It wasn't like he was getting cut man. Is he
a difference maker?

Speaker 3 (31:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (31:06):
I mean, I still think Wat's their best defensive player,
but Ramsey is right there with him.

Speaker 3 (31:12):
And Herbig's not far off. Last couple.

Speaker 4 (31:16):
Yeah, Jalen Ramsey is making the kind of impact that
Minka Fitzpatrick made when he first got here and stopped
making eventually.

Speaker 5 (31:27):
So let me just say this real quick, and.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
I don't blame me all of Manca, but it was
it was sustainable.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
It wasn't sustainable when make it was picking off two
pass of the game.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
So I think if we look at his statistics and
contexts and it can be widened for Patrick Queen. And
we'll talk more about individual guys coming up in just
a moment. But Matt, you know, we were talking about
this last year, like the lack of blitzing by the Steelers, right,
maybe not? And I think that we can extrapolate from
that because the same coordinator that they didn't feel confident

(31:57):
enough in the back end to bring guys and so.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Much of the off season talking about this. Here's one
of my things.

Speaker 1 (32:02):
Oh good, oh good, I'm god, I hit one of
your things. Jalen Ramsey two sacks, two TFLs, two quarterback hits.
What does that mean? He's a corner. He's blitzing. That's
how you get those stats. Patrick Queen, he's blitzing. He
was a guy that had I remember when the Steers
signed him, and I remember thinking, well, how do you
utilize him? Because he can be elite in blitzing, but

(32:26):
he's also a sideline to sideline guy who can be
elite and covering. Well, we haven't seen him blitz and
I think it's because they haven't had the personnel. Now
they have the personnel, they have one of the highest
blitz percentages, if I'm not mistaken, in the NFL. And
so we're seeing guys like Jalen Ramsey and Peyton Wilson
and Patrick Queen getting sacks where they wouldn't have in
years past.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Yeah, And I think the front office, the vision of
the organization overall, and this is something I've been harping on.
Not they listened to me, but I've done so many
hundreds of hours, especially in the off season, of things
they needed to do, talk about this much a little.

Speaker 3 (33:01):
Bit, and that was a big one, you know.

Speaker 2 (33:04):
I mean, like we remember, not even Blitzberg, but what
was it five years in a row they led the
league in sacks.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Or that's I think one year they might have been tied.

Speaker 2 (33:11):
But yeah, but they were number four. I mean, that's
never happened.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
That's middle year.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
They were like right in the middle and slightly below.
And you can't have that. I've been saying all along,
Peterre like, no way. I'm like, this is the best
defensive front in the league. It should be your god
given right to lead the league in sacks or be
right there. So why aren't they? Well, the ball was
coming out quick. They didn't trust any corner besides Porter
last year to play man coverage or to leave on

(33:39):
islands to press or to press. Jackson wasn't a good fit,
you know what I mean, He's getting pushed around. He's
a zone only guy. So they didn't do any blitzing.
And not only you know, like in those days when
they were leading the league in sacks, they'd get like
seven sacks between Vince Williams and Hilton you know, like
it wasn't all Watt and the pre and the pass rushers.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
It's Ramsey, It's Queen to your point, you know.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
Like these other guys, and they're not only good blitzers,
like Queen's a good pass rusher, you know, like he
has a variety of moves. It's not just like he's
coming clean through and over alley, you know, unblocked pressures.
And Ramsey's the same way. I mean, out of the slot,
he's bigger than Hilton. But those guys know when to
time it and all those things. And the other thing
it does is then you get wat more one on ones,

(34:24):
you know, I mean everyone everyone chips what but it's
harder like a thing that they've been doing. They did
a lot in Dublin, what you know, where he's gonna
line up, but they would take Peyton Wilson and walk
him onto outside shoulder of what. So just that chipper
that everyone in the world knows what's gonna get he
has to deal with the Wilson blitz. So then Walcket's
a one on one and then he destroys those guys

(34:46):
and then know by the way the Browns tackles were
falling apart and were in big.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
Trouble, yes as some of the rest of the offensive
line too. And Sean Ellie, by the way, had a sack, but.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
The whole he doesn't have offensive lineman right, you know
what I mean?

Speaker 5 (34:58):

thoughts as the Steelers defeat the Cleveland Browns twenty three
to nine. When we continue on the Point After, presented
by our neighborhood Ford Store and by this year this

pro shop, get it direct from the team at shop
dot Steelers dot Com on DVE and this yeer there's
audio network. Rogers gets a snap back to pass looking
pump picture the right now wants to go to Metcalf
pass thro the Intel, touchdown duck tail and Metcalf.

Speaker 3 (35:43):
Oh Boy.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Welcome back to the Point After, Presented by our neighborhood
Ford Store by the Steers Pro Shop. Get it direct
from the team at shop dot Steelers dot com. You're
listening on DVE and this Steer's Audio network. Okay, so
I got a man. I created my own problem. I
said this on DV this morning and also with Max.
I went up to he k metcalf and I said, hey,
is there any any uh instance in which you'd want
to be called de Kalen. I don't know why, I

(36:05):
asked the question played by play guy that's his name,
his name's to callan and he said he said no, No,
he said no, I wouldn't any in which you'd like
to be called Isaac. No, I didn't make it up
to name to Kalen. So uh he said, actually I
prefer to Kalen. But people mispronounce it all the time.

Speaker 3 (36:25):
I bet they do. They probably get or something like that,
or de Kalen or whatever.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
So so I walked away thinking, well, what do I
do now? Right, everybody knows him as DK, but he
wants he prefers to be called to Kalen. He probably
not going to die across. So I called him to Kale.
But I think I'm gonna have to talking over with
other guys. I think I might have to go back
to DK and slip in the occasional to Kailan. That
makes sense, Trent Jordan, I did once. I've never done

(36:54):
it again. I never asked him about it. It just
came out. Uh but uh anyway, so he's obviously a
huge factor. So I did have to get that out there,
that DK decale and that's why I called him Decail.

Speaker 3 (37:07):
In case anyone was.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
Used to you, there was a running back out of
Beaver County and when he played it, Pitt, his name
was Tony dors Dor Dorset, yes, and eventually it became Dorset.

Speaker 5 (37:21):
And it caught on.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Everybody in el exquipp was still called him Dorset, right, Yeah,
and it caught on.

Speaker 3 (37:26):
But you know, at a certain point, it's just is
what it is.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
There are there are all these national announcers who are
just gonna call him, They're gonna call him DK.

Speaker 3 (37:34):
I never I was talking to you this morning when
you were on the morning show. I never knew. And yeah,
I look on because I was looking.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
On Pro Football Reference for pronunciations and I was looking
because he doesn't have periods in DK.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
It's just which is a writing thing, that's an anal
like you want to get sure that's right.

Speaker 4 (37:55):
So like on profile Pro Football Reference in Steelers dot
com and NFL dot and everything, it's d K D
k D Seattle website. And then somebody sent me the
Wikipedia page thing that says, so.

Speaker 5 (38:07):
This is where this is.

Speaker 1 (38:09):
This is you know, Matt has to research on you know,
third and three with a wind blowing from the southeast,
you know, and and the lead is lesser minus three points.
This is what they do, right, that's at night. Yeah,
and I have to find out is his name to
Kalen or DCAB Yeah, job Trent Jordan. So look so

(38:33):
many so we mentioned Aaron Rodgers signaling out for praise,
Jalen Ramsey. On defense, Deshaun Elliott is just he's just
so good. He is just so good. I just love
his game. I liked his game with Baltimore. I love
his game with this two twelve tackles he led the
team and Matt nick Herbig. They announced twelve starters yesterday

(38:59):
and defense, which they've never done before.

Speaker 3 (39:02):
Because Nick Herbig, I think they've done that before.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
Oh I think Mike Tomlin after the game said they
had never done it.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
That's why they did it. That's okay.

Speaker 1 (39:11):
My inference was that they'd done that. They've never done
it before. Okay, all right, it is kind.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Of a badge of honor, though it is it is.
It is a badge of honor.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
Nick Herbig, By the way, speaking of Mike Tomin real
quick aside, you said the postgame press conferences when he
talked about Darnell and Spencer Anderson, he did have a
great code. He said, there are weight classes in combat
sports for a reason. You're going to bring in our
big guys to pledge in your little guys, right.

Speaker 4 (39:36):
Absolutely, So I'm just glad we're finally acknowledging that Darnel
Washington weighs three hundred pounds.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Oh yeah, yeah, so it started the three come on, yeah,
more than three. When he stands up, he doesn't. He
doesn't stand up. He unfolds like he gets out of
his chair and he's like whoop. You're like, oh my goodness, gracious.

Speaker 3 (39:54):
You don't walk with Darnell, you walk among him.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Yeah. He's one of the few people that can literally
see ey with Max Starks. So Herbig two sacks, two
tackles for losses, four quarterback hits.

Speaker 3 (40:07):
This is a next gen thing that common I was
gonna double check it. So it's straight from NFL.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
I didn't make it up, and I don't love pressures,
but he had eight pressures in this game. That's the
second time the season he had eight. There's only three
players in the league that have had eight pressures more
than once. It's him, It's Aiden Hutchinson and Micah Parsons.

Speaker 3 (40:27):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
I mean, that's a company he keeps as a pass rusher.
I mean, he's one of the best pass rushers in
the league. He's not a cute twelfth guy being announced.
He's one of the best pass rushers in the league.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
So I don't have to write that down now, and
so I can steal it. Of course you'll probe because
that's a great stat I don't I don't know. I mean, look,
high Smith had half a second and two quarterback hits.

Speaker 4 (40:54):
Played really well together. The way they worked that it
wasn't just the third down three outside linebackers packers. The
rotation was superb. Herbig actually led the position with fifty snaps.
Watt had forty nine, high Smith had forty seven, and

(41:14):
they even got Sawyer out.

Speaker 5 (41:16):
There for twenty four, especially towards the end.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
I mean, yeah, but he was out there before clean
up day. He was Yeah, he looks pretty solid too.

Speaker 3 (41:24):
I know, I got no.

Speaker 4 (41:25):
Problem if Trent Jordan Watt doesn't have to play eighty
five stats.

Speaker 3 (41:29):
Yeah, because I want him.

Speaker 4 (41:30):
Healthy and fresh at the end of the year. You know,
they've had some problems finishing in recent seasons. Of it
is wearing down a contributing factor to that. I don't
care if the defense and the offense are both bad
fantasy teams, you know, like if it cost him a
couple of sacks or whatever, so be it haven't played
his best in December and January.

Speaker 3 (41:51):
Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
This is not a fantasy football offense right.

Speaker 5 (41:55):
Well, except Kaitlin, I don't know where to go.

Speaker 3 (42:02):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
Yeah, he scores every week, four straight games with the
touchdown for him. One other guy I wanted to single
out on defense, and we could just go on and
on and on with the defense. But you know, Derek Harmon,
Uh he had two and a half sacks now after
the sack yesterday.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
Uh, I think so.

Speaker 5 (42:19):
Yeah, he has been disruptive to me.

Speaker 1 (42:24):
Active defensive tackles a lot of times will not put up,
uh the stats that are indicative of the quality of
their play. I think you know, look, uh, you know
Cam Hayward makes all Pro and Pro bowls because he's
also getting sacks too, right, I mean so uh And

(42:44):
that's not anything to be sneezed at me. It's it's
an elite skill to be able to do that. I
don't know where Harmon's gonna wind up with it. With
the sack total, by the way, two I said two
and a half. He has two sacks.

Speaker 3 (42:55):
We got one one full yesterday. Correct, Yes, one full.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
He has two, but he also has he also has
like I think, I think of his I think of
his sacks. I think eight of those. I think he
has eight half sacks. I don't think he's been credited
with a full sack yet, but he has.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
Been in there lately. It's hard to tell you even
gets there was one guy.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
Four guys were laying on it and I was like what,
And I think they changed who got the sack. I
think originally they added to two guys and TJ Wide
at half a sack. I think they took it away
from her big and gave it to Harmon. I thought, rightly, so,
but you know when you start to see that, and
Keanu Benton had the big game last week. We're beginning
to see maybe week one, Cam wasn't Mike fully ready

(43:38):
to go, kind of that hold in in camp and
he gets a new contract. Harmon didn't play because of injury.
Now you have those two guys, Keanu Benton. You're able
to roll some of that depth out there. But when
I say that, you know a lot, I think a
lot of When I think of rotational depth defensive linemen, right,
I think of you know not that we're gonna see

(43:59):
bj this week. Right, you get for Bja Hills, You're
gonna have a pretty good defensive line. These guys are
gonna be rolling in and out.

Speaker 3 (44:05):
Well.

Speaker 1 (44:05):
I think these guys are gonna do it at an
at an elite level at least some of them, and
the backups are gonna be able to come in and
spell them and keep them fresh.

Speaker 4 (44:13):
To you guys, point and if nothing else, if they
just get that center pressure and then when the pressure
quarterbacks don't win the outside crash, is that takes away
the step up less?

Speaker 3 (44:23):
Right? You know you saw that with Gabriel.

Speaker 4 (44:24):
You have they hay to kind of loop around and
Ramsey caught them from behind. I mean, they're gonna be
playing Love, They're gonna be playing Herbert. These guys are
elite movers. You got to keep them contained.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
Right, you know, the high side pressure is gonna be there, yeah, right,
and the stuff coming off.

Speaker 3 (44:41):
Don't don't give them that easy pass out of the
out of the trouble.

Speaker 5 (44:43):
Well, that's it, and just real quick too.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
No quarterback wants to go back and have immediate pressure
in their face, right, That is what disrupts timing. It
isn't to me, and this is a broad brush here,
but it isn't the outside pressure it's gonna come, right.
It is the pressure in your face that doesn't allow
you to step up and make a throw. And when
it gets there quickly, guess that's that's going to allow

(45:06):
those outside guys in that extra split second they need
to get home.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
I think Brady Manning whoever, would rather play against Garrett
or Watt than Aaron Dawnoald Right, you know, I mean,
there's no answer. They're harder to double, you know, I mean,
it's immediate in your face. You can't you know, you
were a quarterback if you can't step into your throw,
or your arm angle gets compromised, or you can't quite
see or you're immediately getting hit. It's a nightmare. And

(45:32):
I also like Equality. By the way, we have not
even mentioned him. I think he's a really quality contributor to.

Speaker 1 (45:37):
By the way, I didn't need a bad pocket to
throw an interception. Just want I just want to make
sure that we're clear on that. Guys, heading to Cincinnati.
We will be talking about the show on show about
that game afterward. Stoothers are the great opportunity to improve
the five and one as they take on Joe Flacco
and the Bengals loaded with some offensive weapons. And let

(45:58):
me just say, this is why you got those guys
A number of big reason why you have Ramsey, Slay
and Porter.

Speaker 3 (46:05):
That's what he said as training camp.

Speaker 4 (46:07):
We can play matchup man and man against anybody against
elite receiving groups.

Speaker 3 (46:13):
Loves an elite receiving group. This is an elite receiving group.
