Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome into the Lounge presented by DraftKings. I'm Ryan Mink
here with Cliff dun Brown, who watched practice with me
today the beginning of Rookie Mini Camp. We were out
there first time seeing these rookies in their jerseys, and
we are going to give you our initial takeaways, first
impressions of the rookies from practice today and then also

(00:28):
hearing from some of them after practice. So, Cliff, just
kind of a big picture, what do you look to
gain from watching these rookie mini camp practices.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
That's a good question because kind of part of this
is they're learning how the Ravens practice and how the
coaches want them to practice.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
This is not a training camp. Practice is not like
pads on. We're going full eleven on eleven action now.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
So yeah, everyone is obviously really curious. Fans want to
know what these guys look like, what this is just
like the early first for almost like, Okay, let's go
out on the field for a little while.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Have we've talked to you. Let's go on the field
and work on this.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
But to answer your questions, I mean, you know some
things to me, like Malachi Starks and Mike you can
see their athleticism right away. You see Tyler Loop has
a strong leg right away. Some of these guys then
when you talk to them, have a great personality too.
I mean, I think there's as a group, there's a
really good group of guys who seem like they're hungry

(01:26):
to be here, and you know, you know they're nervous,
but they are really eager to get started. I think
Ravens fans are gonna like this collection of rookies.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
As a group.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah. John Harwall said he was impressed with their smarts,
just like kind of how dialed in there were. They
were not a lot of mistakes, not having to redo things,
and they were coaching them hard too.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
There's position coaches.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
You know, even though it's their first practice, like you
see all right right away, it's not like, you know,
they expect a lot of these guys. It begins immediately
they getting coached up right, and so let's go through it.
I thought Malachi starts first and foremost. You lay eyes
on him on the football field immediately and you're like,
that's a dude.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
I mean, he.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Looks like a first round pick, just well built, well
proportioned guy. And then you hear you know, after practice
he broke down, he broke the huddle, which is you know, hey,
he's going to be a leader, and that he's the
first round pick, and you just kind of he said
it was an honor to do that. And so you

(02:27):
see those leadership qualities. Even the communication on the field,
you could you could hear Malachi talking out there.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
You see that from him immediately.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, he's been a leader all his life. He's a
leader of this draft class. He started as a freshman
at Georgia, which something that I'm really impressed by because
they just bring in stud after stud defensively there. You're
not supposed to start there as a freshman. You always
know the person behind you is ward and capable of
taking your job. And for him to just coolly do

(02:57):
that as a freshman, that's impressive. And I think, you
know he is, he is a draft choice probably most
is expected of, you know, expected to come in right
away and help this secondary be better. And yeah, he looks,
he looks and acts the part. So yeah, definitely encouraged
by everything you see about.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
I thought it was interesting to hear him say that
he started taking notes on leadership and how to be
a good leader. Really as soon as he stepped on
the campus at Georgia, he was watching those older guys
and really seeing how they did it, picking up things,
how they lead his own style of leadership, and you
just I feel like you don't hear a lot of
guys talk about that. Like immediately, I knew I wanted

(03:37):
to be a leader and I was gonna work towards that.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, he's wise beyond his years.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, and I think that guys pick up on that,
and these young guys, I think again, he'll be the
leader of this draft class in a.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Lot of ways.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
And then you know, obviously when the Vezi get here,
the Kayat kind of guys will be around. I mean,
you know, Kyle Hamilton. What better player to learn from
than someone like that who's also wise beyond it.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
All right, So moving on second round pick Mike Green,
what were some of your takeaways from practiced in his
podium session today.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
The athleticism on the field and then the poise you
know off the field. I mean, let's face it, I
mean he knew that. You know, when he was drafted
and fell on the draft, there was going to be
a lot talk and said about about him and you know,
I think that he is showing that he's ready for
to handle, you know, whatever questions are thrown at him

(04:29):
and won't let that affect him on the field. I
feel like, yeah, it's only the first impression was this
is the first time he's been in front of the
media since he got drafted.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
I think that his comfort level.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
I think there's a gorgal organization for him to come
to in that, you know, he's surrounded by people who
a you know, really think highly of him as a player.
And I think that, you know, it's going to help
him now that the draft is over and all the
speculation about where he would go and how how far
he might fall is over. Now he can just focus

(05:03):
on playing football. And I think that's exactly what he
wants to do and that he will do. And you know,
he's got a lot of talent. I mean when you
you know, I didn't see a lot today as far
as you know, because it was unpadded and you know,
really weren't going full strength. But when you watch him
on film, it's it's very difficult not to be impressed
with not only his ability to get to the passer,

(05:25):
but just what kind of athlete he is.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, I mean, obviously he knew he was going to
get questions about the sexual assault allegations, which is why
he fell in the draft, and he said he's looking
forward to moving on with his career.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
So that's how he addressed that.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
And I thought, to me, my eyes just watching practice
that hey, I'll reverse a little bit, I thought, like
he to your point, he came off well talking to
the media for the first time and said that his
emotions in the drafts we all saw.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
I mean, the guy melted, you know, I mean, he
just wanted to get picked up. He said, somebody please take.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Me exactly and give me chance.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
So it was it was interesting to hear him talk
about that, and it wasn't like it doesn't seem like
there was all this like built up frustration from like
dropping as far as he did. A guy who was
talked about being in the teens being picked in the
teens going the second round. It was just like, I
just I just wanted a chance and like and it
was emotional for him. And then on the field, I

(06:22):
agree with which I thought of all the guys that
I watched today, he popped off the most to me
in terms of you see the burst, you see the bend.
I mean he had one play where he would have
would have had a sack, and to see him turn
the corner and bend and dip to get to the quarterback,
I thought it was it was, Ah, he's got it,
He's got the juice.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
And uh.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
And another one I noted, just a run kind of cutback,
went the other way, popped out the other side, and
Mike chasing chasing the running back five ten yards down
the field, hustling, Uh, chasing that play down. And I thought,
all right, you know, you see that hustle that the
Raven scouts saw with him. Another one he just burst

(07:05):
in the back, just shot a gap on a run
play and was in the backfield.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
He's an explosive dude.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
And so I really liked what I saw from the
on field perspective with him.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
All right.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Third round pick Emery Jones Junior, the offensive lineman out
of LSU. We did not get to see him practice today,
and John Harwall after practice revealed that he's working through
a labrim issue which is going to sideline him for
most of the summer. John Harwall said, you know, thinking
probably training camp is when he gets on the field,
and so that was news to me and you know,

(07:41):
maybe part of the reason why he could have gone,
you know, in the third round a little bit later.
For a guy who has so much starting experience, has
all the checks, all the boxes in terms of the athleticism,
the size and all those things. But you know, we'll
be ground that he will have to make up early
in his career. And he's somebody that I think we've
all talked about, Hey, could he push for that starting

(08:01):
left guard job. It's gonna make it certainly tougher if
he's not you know, on the field until the start
of training camp. I think that forhe's, as we've said,
is is probably the leader in the clubhouse there. But
hearing that today, it's like, Okay, this is really Borhee's job,
you know, to to lose here.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Yeah, no question, that's gonna set him back. I think
it's though, very good that the Ravens don't need him
to start. I weren't counting on him to start or
play a significant role this year. If if he doesn't
catch up before they have Voor he's you know, resigning.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Ronnie Stanley was so.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Huge when they signed the veteran Joseph Notebloom exactly over
this note Boom.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
That sheds more light on what why that was probably
gonna happen because they knew that, you know, he wouldn't
be on the emy, wouldn't be on the field for
a while, so there's no reason.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
To rush him back. He can take his time get healthy.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Obviously he'll be around and trying to pick up on
the offense as quickly as he can. But yes, missing
those reps for young player, definitely, for any young player,
would make it difficult more difficult for you to start
as a rookie, but or to play significantly. But the
Ravens don't need that, so you know, drafting three offensive linemen,

(09:15):
he's part of overall hopefully improving depth and hopefully when
he gets healthy, then you know, we'll see what the
Ravens expect when they drafted right.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
And Noteboom would presumably be the swing tackle that they
will need immediately since they lost shots shots and free agency,
so you know, let let Emory Jones get healthy, right
and take it from there. He's kind of along with
Carson Vincent a little bit more of all right, these
are going to be big pieces, hopefully at some point
here and maybe Emery Jones even during his rookie year,

(09:45):
could you know, certainly compete for that. You know, it's
for significant steps and being a starter potentially. So all right,
moving on Teddy Buchanan, the linebacker of the Ravens drafted.
You know, this is a guy that to me when
I look at him on the field, very comfortable moving backwards,
you know, dropping in coverage seemed like that was he

(10:07):
you know, it's covering guys is a different thing, but
he seemed very fluid and natural going in reverse.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Yes, he's he is unlike a lot of young players
at that position where it looks like, yeah, his strength
could be in past coverage that he I agree with you.
He looks very comfortable picking up guys out of backfield,
covering tight ends. That that was something he did in
college and could be his strength in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
And so he does have quickness.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
So if he can get off blocks and effectively and
be a good good against the run and blitz effectively,
I think the passing thing, that's something where he may
be ahead of the average rookie at that position. So
he's athletic and another guy who I think early even
in his college career. You know, people were wanting is
he an NFL player? And he really came on his

(10:56):
last couple of years and the office of cal his
last year really show people that, Yeah, he has a
type of talent that.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Can play at this level. So it'll be interesting in watch.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I mean, their their snaps to be had, maybe not
only inside linebacker, obviously special teams too.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
So he has a path to the field.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
To me if he's impressive, whether it just be really
special teams or even more, there's there's a path for
him to be a guy who dresses on Sundays and
it's making players to help the Ravens win.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Carson Vinson.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
I know a player that you talked with that after
practice today.

Speaker 4 (11:33):
What'd you learn about Carson.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Well, I mean we talked a lot about his offenity.
Why was so important for him to go to HBCU.
Both his parents went to hbc They both went to
Winston Salem State. He's talked about going there Alabama A
and m that. You know, he was a player who
a lot of people thought he would transfer when he
started showing NFL potential. It was important for him to

(11:56):
stay there. And he's got a great personality. He's basically
challenged anybody to beat him in a game of chess
in the locker room. He was supposed to be the
chess master at Alabama and m he came in like,
I never lost down there.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
That's what the man said, I never.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Lost, right, So yeah, I mean hopefully, yeah, we'll see
some of that action in the.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
Chess.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
I like to see that match.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
And then on the on the field, I mean, he
he believes that tackle is his best position, but he's
fully capable of being a guy who can move into guard.
And you know, he knows the Ravens love versus a
offensive lineman. So it'll be interesting. I think that, you know,
working around with George Warhop and practice around the guys,

(12:41):
he'll be he he'll be like a sponge and he
certainly is hungry to prove that he can stick in
the NFL. He he didn't know he would be the
only HBCU player drafted, but now that he is, yes,
he knows that a lot of people are rooting for.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Him to make it.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Well, I'll tell you he looked like an offensive tackle
in the NFL. I mean that was the first thing
for me that jumped off was just this is a
big man six seven three twenty one, and he carries
it really well. It's not like sometimes I feel like
you see these really tall off as offensive tackles, they
just look a little bit uncoordinated, like, you know, like

(13:19):
they're right, their athleticism hasn't caught up with the height,
right That ain't that ain't Carson Vincent. I mean he
carries well big quads, like big quads, and uh yeah, he.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Moves really well. He looks like a big athlete that
carries that well.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
And John Harball even said, you know, he can put
on some more weight, a little more strength, like an offseason,
a full year in the weight room, I think is
going to really benefit him. And you can tell George
Warhap is coaching him, like this is a George Warhop
was about getting Carson Vincent and this is gonna be
his project, and you know, and I'm intrigued to see

(13:58):
the results of that because George is a great coach
and I think Carson's a great kid with a great
frame and a lot of a lot of checks, a
lot of boxes in terms of body attitude, all those things,
and he'll be a really interesting guy. To watch, and
I saw some blocks out there that I thought we're impressive.
Saw them go against Mike Green, and you know he
won some of those too, so I'm intrigued.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
All Right, we're gonna take a break.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
When we come back, we'll talk about some of the
other Ravens six round draft picks and what we saw
from their first practice as Ravens. Thank you for listening

or older to play some of the Ravens' sixth round
draft choices, one of which I got caught up with

(15:08):
after practice with Lejonte Wester the returner, slush wide receiver
out of Colorado. And this is a Florida kid, and
it was funny man. He said after he was drafted,
all that was going through his mind was LJ here,
I come, LJ here, I come. You know, he was
ready to play with Lamar Jackson, you know, grew up

(15:29):
kind of looking up to him.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
Some of the juke moves.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
I'm not gonna put him on the same level as
Lamar with that, but Lejonte, I'm looking forward to some
of the joystick maneuvers from him too.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
I mean obviously Jay Flowers, he already got a you know,
a guy, same thing, similar type, similar type action there.
And yeah, he's I think Deonte he's used to the
spotlight playing in Colorado this past year. Yep, you know
with Shador, I mean it was a lot going on.
I saw the hey Hail Mary pass he called to
win a game. He's a player. The return ability he has,

(16:02):
that's another rookie who get on the field right away
in that aspect. As Raven's number one return he has
a chance to win that job. So yeah, he's a
guy that I think is going to be closely watched
once you start seeing some of those moves of practice
preseason games. I'm sure he'll get a chance to return
some punts. Yeah, I mean you gotta like the excitement.

(16:23):
You know, he read playmakers, you know the time. Monkin
loves playmakers. He's Yeah, I'm curious to see what he
can do too. But it's exciting that he's now another
piece of the offense and maybe a specialty.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
He said.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Returning punts is like second nature to him. Said he's
been doing it since he was a kid at the playground.
He was always the guy they sent back there. Said,
all right, you know you're gonna be the guy when
they throw the kickoff.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
You know, you kick it off and you just throw it.
He's the guy.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
I believe him exactly the way it looks natural he
does pum returning.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
As you know, it's not for everybody.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Yeah, and he told me, he said, a guy in
my stature, I knew if I was gonna make it
to the NFL, I was gonna have to be make
an impact on special teams. You know, not a lot
of guys were going to just say, yup, you're a
wide receiver. I mean he's standing in at five nine
one seventy. Right. So, but the interesting thing is he
had the volume as a wide receiver in college. I

(17:15):
mean he six most catches an FBS history, that's no joke.
And he said he transferred to Colorado. That was his decision.
It wasn't like, you know, Prime came and said, ah,
you know, come come on over. That was his decision.
He wanted to step up a competition level and prove
that he could do it. And yeah, the Hail Mary
catch with clutch play and he had the volume there too.
So an intriguing guy thought, another good kid a Nias Peoples,

(17:40):
a Nis people fub aka fub, which is a blend
of you know, he was kind of a chunkier baby,
and that he was called Fubby when he was a
baby and they got eventually shortened to fub and he
just went with it. So he said, nobody calls him
a Nis now, even though he was named after Anas Williams,
a big time defensive back Hall of Famer. So I

(18:04):
was really impressed with him as a as a person,
really right.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
I mean football has been in his family, it's his
whole life. I mean his father, his grandfather, huge football
fans and yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
I mean, his grandfather was a Pro Bowl, multi time
pro bowler.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
In the league, right, so he's he kind of was around,
not kind of, he was around the.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Game and could see someone who did it.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
So this is kind of something he can't say you
expect to be here, but he always seriously dreamed of
being here and thought that he thought that he could be.
And yes, he another guy who I think fits this
whole rookie class. Is impressed with the way they carried themselves.
And yeah, I really enjoyed listening to his answers to
questions today.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Yeah, the Ravens have some other intriguing picks. Balal Cone,
I thought you see the size I mean again, another guy, Yep,
you look like an NFL cornerback out there. And Robert
Longer being excited for the potential that he has. Certainly
Garrett Dellinger their final pick. So a lot of intriguing players.

(19:07):
And then of course they signed seventeen undrafted rookies in
this year's class, and Garrett I will be talking more
about that class as well as you know, who could
potentially make the team from the undrafted rookies. We'll be
breaking that down as well. So a lot to like
from this year's rookie class and from rookie Mini camp.
Just to round things out, we did have some other

(19:27):
news from podium today from John Harball, one of which
being Zay Flowers. You know, he had finished the year
with a knee injury and we really missed him in
the playoffs. John Harball said that he did not require
surgery that knee injury, just rehabed it as normal and
he's good to go, so that's very good news. John

(19:49):
Harball also said that he's had discussions about joint training
camp practices this year. Nothing nailed down yet, still kind
of waiting to see who they play, and as well
as talked about the situation with Tyler Loop, who we
left out Actually should have mentioned him, you kind of
did at the top that I mean has the leg
you hear it, Tyler Loop and Justin Tucker who's been

(20:10):
around the building as players have returned. Justin Tucker has
also returned to action, and John Harble said they're not
going to make any decisions until that NFL investigation concludes.
So those are the updates from John Harball. A lot
to still break down, a lot to come before OTA's come.
Cliff thank you for joining us. Garrett'll be back soon.

(20:32):
You know, you're you're, you're a good substitute, Cliff. So
I'm not going to rush him back, you know. I
was gonna say, give him time to get healthy. Yeah,
we'll give them time. Yeah, we don't want to rush
Garrett back to the field.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Anyway.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
Thanks for listening as alway as you can reach us
at the lounge at RAVENSDNFL dot net.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
We'll be back the next week.
