Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into Lounge presented by DraftKings.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'm Ryan Mink here with Garrett Downing following the Ravens
twenty seven to nineteen win over the Minnesota Vikings here
at US Banks Stadium is a big win that moves
the Ravens to four and five. They've won three straight
and things have turned around quickly. It wasn't too long
ago when the Ravens were sitting at one and five,
and it is a very different story for this team
right now.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
This team call was in an early hole this season
and they felt like they had to call their way
out of it and there's still more work to be done.
That was definitely a sentiment in talking with the players
and coaches after this win. But I think that they
have done the heavy lifting and climbing their way out
of the hole, and to be honest, like this was
the game to me that felt like I said it,

(00:44):
coming into it kind of felt like a lynchpin game
coming into this one because coming off the by they
played the Bears, then they played the Dolphins, and those
were two games, especially getting Lamar Jackson back in Miami,
that you felt like, just on paper, the Ravens were
in position to win, but here tougher environment, a team
that had just got the quarterback back on the field,

(01:05):
and JJ McCarthy had just beaten the Detroit Lions. They
were getting hot on the Minnesota side. And so to
come to.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
The teams beyond that, great receivers, good defense, aggressive defense,
I mean, good team.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Very good.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
They're a good team. They're well coached, they have a
lot of playmakers on both sides of the ball. Like,
this is a good team. And so to come in
here and win in this environment, I think puts the
Ravens in good position get down the stretcher. Now they
have to go and do it, but I think it
puts them in a really good position.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, I think it's safe to say the Ravens have
officially turned this season around. That's what this win does
for me. You know, it is kind of a question
coming out of Miami, all right, are we all the
way back?

Speaker 1 (01:40):
We back?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
The Ravens are back, and when you win three straight
and this this is their best win of the season.
Quite frankly, this is a very good team, like we said,
in a hostile environment, and to pull this one off
with now the Browns and the Jets up next, the
Ravens are in good you gotta go win those games.
They're not gonna be handed to you. And I like
the to your point, the Ravens men mentality. You know,
they're not setting off fireworks.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
You know in the postgame locker room.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
There was no champagne bucket in the locker room.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, but they also know that this was a this
was a big win for them, and and to be
able to get to six and five, if you're able
to get the next two wins going into the Thanksgiving
Night against the Cincinnati Bengals in the stretch of three
straight AFC North games like this sets them up well
for going on an extended run.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
You mentioned the attitude after the game, and that was
kind of striking to me because we're sitting here saying like, hey,
Ravens are back, They've turned a corner. I talked to
Lamar Jackson on the field right after the game and
about the significance of this win and how big it was,
and right away he was like, yeah, it's it's nice,
it's good. I'm glad we won, but there's a lot
more to do, Like there's nothing we need to stay

(02:45):
locked in like, and I think he sets a tone
on that and a lot of He sets a tone
in pretty much every regard, but his attitude of let's
not think that we're too hot here coming off of
these three straight wins. We need to maintain the level
of focus, attention to detail, mindset, all of those things
that they've had over the last month. They need to
maintain that moving forward. And I think that everybody kind

(03:08):
of echoed that sentiment.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Kyle Heiinson was pretty clear in saying the Ravens came
into the season field a little too hot about who
they were and what they were going to do this year,
and you get, as he said, punched in the mouth
and you're one in five. Okay, that's a humbling experience.
And the way that they've responded to that, you know,
maintain their composure, maintain the consistency.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Come back.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
When a lot of people, quite frankly, were writing this
team off, there were a lot of people that said
the Ravens are done, and they've proven those people wrong
because they are very much in the thick of this.
You know, Steelers are playing out in La on Sunday
night football here, we'll see, but the Ravens could end
the day one game back if the Steelers lose to
the Chargers. So very much not done for this team,
and the defense really is what led the way in

(03:49):
this one. Talk about a unit that has turned things around.
This was the thirty second ranked defense in the league
for the first portion of the season, and for them
to come out get two takeaways, two interceptions in this
game and really put the handcuffs on Justin Jefferson in
this offense, limiting them. Justin Jefferson had thirty seven yards
receiving on four catches and let on twelve targets.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
I mean, it was an impressive defensive performance.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
The defense played great today. It was their best game
of the season. And the takeaways have been something that
the Ravens had been preaching since the offseason, but early
in the year when the unit was struggling, they just
weren't getting them. And even last year when the defense
was good, they weren't really getting takeaways. And so that
has been a focal point for this team. And it's
not just the two interceptions. They also got two turnovers
on turnover on downs yep. So it's like you're really

(04:37):
looking at four takeaways there for the defense in this game.
You're gonna win most of your games if you're able
to do that. Plus the special teams takeaway Bykeandre Jackson,
who's been a really nice development. His emergence has been
a really nice development for this team. So getting those
turnovers changes everything. And I gotta say Malachi Starks coming
up with that pick, the way he cruised across the

(04:58):
middle of the field skiede up and that's exactly why
the Ravens drafted him, and he is playing his best
football right now and it has put together two really
nice games with interceptions back to back weeks.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
You better give me credit for calling that one. That
was my pregame prediction.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
You did make, Malachi Starks prediction pick prediction. I did.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
I did. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
I appreciate you. I'll give you credit for I don't
give you credit for much. I'll give you credit for
that one. I'll say too. I asked him after the game,
like at the bye week, he kind of talked about
not necessarily playing it away, where he just trusted his
game and his instincts early in the season, and he
said that over the course of the last few games,
he's just he's trusting himself more trusting his teammates more
and that's allowed him to play more free and I

(05:37):
think you're seeing that, like his his instincts are taking over.
And if you remember, like Kyle Hamilton is a rookie,
it was a little bit slow going for him out
of the gate and then he really turned it on.
I think we're seeing a similar thing happening with Malachi Starks.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Kyle Hels.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
God forbid, a guy takes seven more than seven games
to get acclimated to the NFL, you know.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
For al Starks.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
The other interception came from Marlon Humphrey, which was notable
considering that he was playing with a pretty heavy.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Rap on his hand.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, he had a cast on his hand after you know,
popped up on the injury report late in the week.
For him to make that interception was another big one.
Just to kind of track that ball and catch it
on a deep shot Vikings with some questionable third and
inches going throwing bombs, you know, that was quite interesting.
But this secondary, I think it's starting to come together.

(06:24):
There are a lot of question marks early on, a
lot of you know, why isn't I here Alexander playing
at and obviously the Buffalo meltdown a lot of questions
about this secondary and it's really coming together. Louis Gilman
obviously that addition, he had another good game, and then
the cornerbacks, like, give the corners credit, you know.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
John Harball said on Justin.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Jefferson, they didn't really do that much special things to
try to eliminate him from this game. From a schematic standpoint,
he gave credit to the players. And it wasn't Nate
Wiggins just locking him up, putting him in a box
the whole game.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
It was a collection of guys.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, you know, Cheetoh Woozier played well and Nate had
of course his Marlin really after the first deep shot
in this game to against Marlon Huphrey, which was a
great throw by J. J. McCarty, you got to give
them credit and nail her with the play after that
opening drive from the Viking, because they pretty much shut
down instead of passing attack.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah, and and Marlon did talk after the game about, hey, look,
since I've been here and Lamar Jackson's been here, there's
been plenty of games where he's just he's just done
Lamar things and has led the way. And it's nice
for the defense to be able to have a game
where he even joked, it's nice to you to be
able to give Lamar Jackson a smoke break from time
to time. And so I think that that is true.

(07:36):
I think that that is part of the defense of
mentality where they're like, hey, guys, we just can't rely
on and Lamar on the offense to be excellent, Like
we need to do our part, and they're doing their part.
And as I said off the top, like this is
the best defensive game of the season. And when you
talk about like all the ravels back, I really do
feel like this defense is back. It's it's put together
a stretch here. I get some tough offenses. The Rams game,

(07:58):
even though they lost that game, that was a strong
showing from the defense. They've the Bears game, the Dolphins,
now this game, like they've had some tough offenses to
go up against and they're playing their best football. And
I just think that, like I think that this this
defense is a lot more like what I expected coming
into the season. The first you know, the first six

(08:20):
games seem more like a mirage to me than what
we've seen since. And so I think that that is
going to be the case moving forward.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Kyle Hamilton said, the defense has a swagger back, and
Marlon Humphrey said, really, it starts with us. They kind
of said, they kind of have their siger back. The
problem is the celebrations.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
He said.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
In order to fully have the swagger back, they got
to improve the celebrations. His celebration that he came up
with running gassers just totally flopped. That was after the
Roquon pick, which was a great play, should have been
another turnover, but barely ball hit the ground. And then
Marlon Humphrey said, and I think he was like there
was some seriousness to this. Is that just planning the

(08:57):
celebrations that they're going to do as a defense gets
you in the mind mindset of we're gonna make those plays. Yeah, right,
and it all kind of feeds into itself, like now
there is an expectation with the way that Ravens defense
has taking the ball away eight turnovers in the past,
takeaways in the past four games. Now those things come
in bunches for a reason because.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Kind of a speak it into existence thing that's happening,
to celebrate it into existence, celebrate it into existence. I
like that. All right, We'll take a quick break and
then we'll dive into the offensive side of the ball
as well. You're listening to the Lounge podcast. We are
coming to you from the Seakeek Studio. We want to
mention our partners of Draftking Sportsbook. They are an official
sports betting partner of the Baltimore Ravens Draftking Sportsbook. The
Crown is yours. So the offense today wasn't their best day.

(09:37):
They had to settle for a bunch of field goal
attempts and Lamar Jackson was clearly kind of still just
tacked off about that a little bit after the game.
Happy they got the wind, it felt like a well, yeah,
it felt like they left a lot on the table
and they did and they did.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
It could have been a blowout. Yeah, it could have
been a blowout.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
I mean the Ravens they weren't very good situationally in
some regards.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
They weren't good situationally.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
They're six and fourteen on third down to five in
the red zone. Really, you know, short yard situations like
have to be better in the red zone, have to
be better in some of those situations. On the flip side, situationally,
they were good because they did not shoot themselves in
the foot. They did not have any turnovers, and they
only had one false start penalty in a raucous environment.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Vikings, meanwhile, I had eight.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
I know. That's the crazy thing that Vikings I've never
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
That wooed from a false start perspective.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Especially for a home team. I don't know I've ever
seen that with a home team having eight false start penalties.
So that and for the Ravens, like they talked all
week from an offensive standpoint, in particular about managing the
crowd noise, they blew the horn all throughout the week
of practice. It was non stop out there, so that
they were ready for this environment, and I do think
it paid off once I got out here today.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Yep, I agree that. You know, the offense did enough.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
I would say they put together kind of a big
boy drive midway through the fourth quarter. Eleven plays, sixty
seven yard touchdown drive that featured seven straight runs and
died with a touchdown to Mark Andrews and the two
point conversion. Some creativity on the wide open touchdown Mark Andrews.
That was a big, big, big drive. Yeah, midway through
the fourth quarter. So you know it was good and

(11:05):
bad offensively I would say it was not their best game,
but hey, sometimes we're going to have a defensive game
here in Baltimore. We don't say that a lot of
times with Lamar Jackson round anymore. But uh, but yeah,
sometimes it's kind of nice.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Yeah, it's it's kind of old school football in that regard,
and I talk about guys who are back. Mark Angels
another one. Two touchdowns last week, another touchdown in this game.
He's just a touchdown machine when the Ravens need somebody
in that part of the field. That was a really
nicely designed play. There was a couple of nicely designed
plays that Munkin had. That was one of them. Another
one was the third and short pitch play where they
did the fake toush push play and then Mark pitched

(11:39):
it to Lamar really nicely. John on marsh Park to
catch that pitch which was high for Mark, but then
to catch it and then pick up the first down
that was big and that set up the Justice Hill touchdown.
So that was a big moment in the game where
third and short, Okay, you need to have one of
these situations, and they got it. So that was that
was another big opportunity for them.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, there's the thing to work on.
I think they haven't quite got the ground game rolling
as well as they would like to. And Derrick Henry's
tenor in the postgame locker room kind of exhibited that.
I'm sure they would have liked to run out the clock.
They you know, at the end of the game, put
the defense back on the field in a two minute
drill situation. Down eight points, you're sweating it out there

(12:19):
at the end. The offense wants to end that not
have the defense go back out there, but you know,
to the defense's credit, get the job done and basically
run out the clock, get another turnover on downs.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah, that was that was you know, I think that
that was that was big in this defense. It just
was kind of it kind of was a nice cherry
on top, I think in the sense when you just
consider the way they control the game. Yeah, yep.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Special teams performances.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Yeah, we can't leave them out. We gotta we gotta
give credit special special teams.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
You mentioned KeAndre Jackson, the undrafted rookie defensive back who
is just he's been a spark for this special teams unit.
I gotta say it is fun watching him play and
he gets a huge force fumble and uh to to
turn the tide here in the third quarter. The Ravens
ended up scoring a touchdown on that to go up
nineteen to ten. That was for me, kind of the

(13:07):
turning point in this game. The end of the first
half where their offense drove down the field and got
a field goal in the final minute of the first half.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
That was a big one.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Yeah, great management, that situation.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Great management.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
And then the Vikings get the ball first, you get
a defensive stop, you get a touchdown off of that,
and then KeAndre Jackson with the fumble.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Okay, now we're up multiple scores.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah, that was big. So credit took KeAndre Jackson and
he's been a really nice player for this team, the
special team's unit.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
So we went four or five on field goals. Can't
leave him out. Yeah, that man kicked a lot of
field goals.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yeah, only mess was a fifty six yard attempt. So
credit to special teams and the Ravens get it done today.
They've won three straight games. Next up they travel to
Cleveland and then have the Jets at home. So this
team has turned things around and now it's about building
from here. So Thank you so much for listening. We'll
be back with you again later this week.
