Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into the Lounge presented by Jefkins. I'm Ryan Mink
here with Garrett Downing following the Ravens thrilling twenty three
to sixteen win in Cleveland, a grind it out win.
The Ravens have now won four straight and have pulled
to five and five, still one game behind the Steelers
and Garrett, I think everybody predicted a grind it out, physical,

(00:25):
gritty game against the Cleveland Browns in their place, and
that is exactly what we got.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
How many times have we seen this?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
I mean, these two teams have played, they play each
other every year, and it feels like after every game
that they play each other, whether it's home or on
the road, but especially here in Cleveland, we're saying, man,
that was a tough, grinded out game with a really
good defense that the Ravens had to find a way
to win. And that's exactly what today was. It was,
it was cold, it was windy, The Browns defense came

(00:53):
to play, they played hard, they made life really hard
on the Ravens offense. But at the end of the day,
the Ravens were able to make make the plays that
they needed to critical situations to come up with the win.
Defense played incredible and the truth is, like it doesn't
matter how tough of a grinded out kind of game
it is. At the end of the day, you just.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Need to win.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
And I think that the Ravens continue to show that
they're up for challenging situations, they're battle tested, and they
played like that today.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
Absolutely agree.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
The Ravens have won all three games during their road
streak here in Miami, in Minnesota, in Cleveland. Now we'll
return home for a three game homestand and like you said,
I think that was John Harwall's takeaways. Is this team
the grit and determination that they continue to show when
circumstances are not looking good. You know this early in

(01:42):
this ball game, it was almost the playbook for how
the Browns win the game, right, Ravens are turning ball over,
Miles Garrett's wrecking the Ravens offense, and they're settling for
field goals. Like this was the playbook for a Browns
win early on.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, but totally agree.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
And like I mean, when you look at the first half,
the Ravens really gave away ten, if not thirteen points.
There was a pick six that went off keat Mitchell's
hands and the Browns returned it for a touchdown. There
was a muff punt that the Browns recovered at the
six yard line. Credit to the Ravens defense for keeping
that a field goal not seven points. And then there
was the special teams MISSQ on the on the off

(02:22):
side that extended the Browns possession. Now they then turned
that into points, but that was a situation where the
defense was off the field. They had to go back
out there, and so that's thirteen points right there that
the Ravens kind of gifted to the Browns. But even
with that, they were able, especially in the second half,
just to kind of stop that dead in its tracks

(02:43):
and turn things around.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
When this was a defensive performance by the Ravens, I mean,
totally held the Browns in check during the second half,
just just really locked down the rookie Shder Sanders in
his first NFL game action.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
But we we're gonna talk about that, but first we
got to talk about Hurricane.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
That is the.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Mark Andrews thirty five yard touchdown run on fourth and
one that basically won the game at the end in
the final three minutes, and Mark Andrews takes the direct snap,
whirls around and goes thirty five yards untouched for the touchdown.

(03:27):
And as I said, that name was called or that
play was called Hurricane, and so props to Mark, props
to Todd Munkin for dialond that one up.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
And that was that.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Was an epic moment that won't be forgotten anytime soon.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, that really was like that. Mark Andrews has had
a lot of great moments in his career. That one
might take the cake. And it happens on a night
where he sets the franchise record for receiving yards. He
broke that record. He now has receiving yards, receiving touchdowns
and receptions. Is probably gonna be next week I'll have
the triple crown. But that was that was an iconic

(04:03):
play and iconic moment and you kind of get lost
in the excitement of it all and you and you
think about it. It's a fourth down play and the
Ravens had a decision there do you what do you do?
Do you try to kick a long field goal with
Tyler Loop who has a big leg, but this is
a tough place to kick and he's a rookie and
a really that'd be a tough situation. Do you do
you go for it? Do you if you go for it?

(04:24):
What's the play call? And obviously that worked out as
perfectly as you could imagine. But I'm not gonna sit
here and act like that was an easy decision.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Uh. If the Browns burst into the backfield and hit
Mark Andrews for a three yard loss when he's doing
a loop de loop in the back right right, it's
not gonna look good. But oh my gosh, I mean
it worked to perfection. Patrick pat Rick Hard with a
kickout block just opened a huge hole on the right

(04:52):
side of the Ravens offensive line and Mark Andrews hit
the Jets. I don't think Mark's that We're gonna have
to check to the next gen on that. But I
don't know if Mark's ever run that fast in his career,
he put he said, he keeps getting faster.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
I know, Priority number one for me is to go
back to the next gen stats and look through his
entire career see if he's ever hit that speed. Because
the other the other one that you know, his first
that touchdown that they had against his and his rookie
season against the Chargers out in LA. Remember that one
that was one where he turned the jets on. I
wonder if it's gonna be between those two plays for him.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, I think that was so long ago. Wasn't even
in La Wasn't it like that? Was that San Diego?

Speaker 4 (05:31):
A good question even sure?

Speaker 1 (05:33):
But yeah, I mean talk about a place, a place
where the Ravens have had a lot of epic plays.
I mean, add this one to the list. And and
you feel so good for Mark. Like you said, he
sets the career you know, the record for receiving yards,
franchise record, and I think Lamar Jackson summed it up
best to your question after the game. You know, when
you need Mark, he's always there. And the Ravens, uh,

(05:56):
you know, are in this big spot tie ball game
in it just a slug fest of the Browns and
who comes up with a big play, but Mark Andrews.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, I felt really good for Mark.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
And this is a guy that he's going to be
in the Ravens Ring of honor. He's one of the
best players in franchise history. He's done so many things
right over the course of his career, and and for
him to have set the record for the receiving record,
but then also come up with an iconic play, and like, look,
we talked about in the offseason and people were talking

(06:26):
about do you get trade him and all this stuff,
and the Ravens were consistent in saying, now we want
great players on this team. Lamar Jackson was one of
the leaders and saying, we can stop that talk right now.
This is a guy who's a key piece of our team.
And you know we were you and I were saying
the same thing when all that was was going on.
And for for Mark to have fought through the adversity

(06:48):
of all of that and and be a great player
again this year and come up with big plays in
big moments, I just think it shows the type of player,
the type of person he is. And on a personal level,
I feel really good for him. And and it's it's
that was a play that's like one for the memory
books for him, and.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
It's it's just cool to have, yeah, to see him
get a night like this, Yes, yes, it's cool.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
After the night that he had in Buffalo.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
You know, he's been having a good season, you know,
but to have a night like this, you just feel
great for the guy.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Totally agree.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
And and someone another, uh, you know, someone else had
a great night.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Was the ray of his defense.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Okay, yeah, and well before we turn the sorry, before
we turn the page on the toushbush, can I just
say one thing, which was after the failed tush pushes
against the Rams, you know, and everybody was like, I
don't want to see another Toush push again, the three
straight on the goal line or whatever it was, you
know against the Rams in that loss. And credit Todd

(07:48):
Monkin and credit this coaching staff, and credit the players.
They stuck with it, but they added some wrinkles to it.
And now back to back weeks. We saw it last
week in Minnesota with the you know, Mark Andrews snap
with the pitch to Lamar Jackson for a key play
in that game. Now we see the Hurricane play. Like,
credit to them for I mean, they've also just continued
to do the tush push and had success just running

(08:10):
it traditionally, but also to develop these wrinkles off it
pretty darn cool.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, I totally agree.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
What one thing that Todd Munkins talked about before is
having plays off of plays, and we're seeing that like
two pretty cool wrinkles of the tush push play with
the pitch and then the Lamar or the hurricane, their
variety of it today and so that's just a great
example of plays off a place.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
When they try to ban it this offseason. I'm a
no vote. Now, I'm a no vote.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Now you're You're the biggest proponent possibly you you and Philly.
So yeah, back just going back to the defense, as
I mentioned, like this unit was awesome today.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
They shut down the Browns.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I already talked about how the Ravens kind of gave
away thirteen points in this game and the brown score
sixteen total. I mean, they get the Ravens gave up
one hundred and eighty seven total yards of defense, and
it was a lights out performance from this group that
got takeaways, they brought pressure, and I'll just tell you

(09:11):
the big moment of the game was at the start
of the second half, should Or Sanders comes into the game.
And since the moment he's been drafted he was drafted,
there's been this interested excitement about seeing him take the field,
and here in Cleveland, when he ran out to the field,
it was the loudest moment of the entire game when
he took the field and he was basically hyping up
the crowd to the point, to the point as the

(09:31):
Browns got into the huddle, a bunch of players had
to start quieting down the crowd because they couldn't hear
it was so loud. And so that was the scene
when he took the field to start the third quarter.
And that can be a spark. It clearly was a
spark in the stadium. It could be a spark for
the team. And so I give the Ravens defense a
lot of credit for it almost felt like a spark
for the Ravens defense, like they seemed to ramp up

(09:52):
their intensity, and Kyle Hamilton gets the sack on that
opening drive with should wear in the game, and then
he's doing the watch celebration and like it just fell
like the defense rallity even to an even greater level
when they had that moment he came into the game
and they completely shut down that Brown's offense. With Sanders
at quarterback.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
Right sure went four of sixteen for forty seven yards.
They picked him off once on his second drive of
the game, and sacked him twice and just pressured him routinely.
I mean another intentional grounding penalty, and so I mean
to attempt sixteen passes and throw for forty seven yards.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
That's unfathomable.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
And so I thought John Harbaugh said it best the
Ravens didn't give them a chance to breathe, and that
was the case. I mean, the pressure, the coverage, cheeabay
Ouzie continues to play his butt off that I mean,
massive pass breakup on third down on the Browns final

(10:52):
drive of the game, they took a shot for the
end zone on third and five and said let's go
for the juggular and he pops that ball out at
the last second. And on top of that, just a
great game for Geeto and then Rokwan Smith snuffs them
out on fourth down and with Draymont Jones, the Cleveland
native applying pressure on the fourth down play, just the

(11:15):
defense top to bottom was awesome. And and I know
it was the Cleveland Browns and people are gonna say, oh,
it's the Browns, And it was sure Sanders and his
first action and all this stuff, But like we have
a big enough sample size here of this Ravens defense
that it is legit.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
I agree they've they've turned things around in a huge way.
I go back to the Rams game before they lost
that game, but the defense played really well, and Matthew
Stafford is the leading guy in the conversation for MVP
right now. And they had a tough time moving the
ball on this Ravens defense. Then you flash forward and
they and they really slowed down the Bears offense. Bears
are a playoff team. Like you can go through the
list here and look at what the Ravens.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Becammis playing, Miami's playing well.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Now, Miami's playing well, like you can look through the
last month, month and a half and this defense, I
think we've got a long enough there's been enough of
a track record here that we can safely say this
defense has turned a corner and they're strength of this team.
They the defense was the strength of this team today

(12:16):
on a night where the offense struggled and the Browns
have a top notch defense, or the Browns have a
top notch defense and they bring a lot of pressure
and they're aggressive. They made life really hard.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
On the Ravens.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Well, in those types of moments, you need to be
able to lean on your defense, and that's what the
Ravens were able to do today. And Kyle Hamilton is
another one like tonight just ho home nine tackles, one sack,
three tackles for loss. He continues to play like one
of the best defensive players in football all over the field.
Made life really hard on that offense, especially once Door

(12:47):
Sanders came in.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
And so it's across the board. This defense is playing
excellent football.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Kyle Hamilton was an absolute monster tonight.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
His only mistake was he dropped a pick and then
kicked the ball refrustration because because as he said after
the game, he just can't seem to hold onto the
ball in Cleveland. He had was it last year, two
years ago, he had a couple of dropped interceptions and
uh and so, but he he was unstoppable tonight. Nate
Wiggins got his third interception of the season. Three of

(13:18):
his four career picks now have come against the Browns.
So if we could combine Nate Wiggins and Kyle Hamilton,
they'd have no answer for the Ravens defense to Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
That's a that's a ninety nine overall created player in
Madden right there versus the Browns.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
Yes, specifically exactly, and.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
So credit to Nate for for handing Schdara Sanders his
first career reception. You know, I thought the defense early
on some tackling issues out of the out of the gate.
You know, quinchn Jenkins is a good running back. But
to see them turn around, turn that around and really
do a good job against the run after that first
drive was was good to see. And uh, and the

(13:55):
pass coverage, I mean the second it's they we say
it all the time, cover meets pass rush. Those two
things are intertwined. And now that you're seeing the Ravens
get more pass rush, the secondary is playing a lot
more aggressively and getting their hands on a lot more
balls too.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Yeah, the pass rush I thought was was really strong today.
And like Kyle van Noy, I mean, he delivered and
he had a sack, delivered another big hit on Shador
and he was I thought he had a really good game.
You mentioned Draymont Jones, the Cleveland native, in his second
game as a Raven brought the pressure. I think he's
been a really nice addition. Like I think that's been

(14:33):
an excellent trade for the Ravens. He's brought something to
that defensive front and been in a really added important
piece for that unit. So I'm excited about him. And
you look, when you have guys in the back end
who are covering as well as Chidabaya Woozier, Nate Wiggins,
Malachi Sarks, and Kyle Hamilton are playing great football. Like

(14:53):
when you have that group to pair along with this
pass rush that seems to be kind of coming into
its own, Like that's all an example of why this
defense is playing great football. And also like the scheme,
like I give Zach Gorran, these defensive coaches a lot
of credit for using Kyle Hamilton in the perfect way
right now, and that's part of the reason they're able
to provide so much pressure up front because he is

(15:15):
he's been deployed at the line of scrimmage and he's
a menace up there, and it's just such a hard thing.
Like Shundro Sanders in his first game, that's a tough
assignment looking across the line of scrimmage and you see
Kyle Hamilton over there, who can do so many different things.
He and I think that he attracted a lot of
attention and he made life hard on the Browns rookie

(15:36):
quarterback and that's what he's doing to basically every quarterback
right now.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
Yep, all right, let's take a break.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
When we come back, we'll talk about the Ravens offense,
as well as other notes from the Ravens win in Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
You're listening to the Lounge podcast. We're coming to you
from the Sea Geek Stuio. We want to mention our
partners with DraftKings Sportsbook. They are an official sports betting
partner of the Baltimore Ravens Draft Kings Sportsbook. The Crown
is yours. So the Ravens offense struggled here today. It
was Miles Garret, it had had a huge day, had
four sacks, and it was not a picture perfect game
for the Ravens offense. They struggled inside the rezone, had

(16:07):
to settle for short field goals. So what do you
make of that? You know, it's just kind of a
kind of a tough day gets really good defense. What's
your assessment of what we saw from the offense.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Well, I think that the offense has been you know,
I wouldn't say it's been gangbusters for much of the season,
you know, I mean they've kind of thrived on big plays.
There's been a lack of consistency, I would say, generally
speaking for the offense. And then when you come up
against a really tough defense on the road, it's even harder.

(16:37):
And you know, but I will say that, Hey, you
can't take away the big plays. Those were big, Those
were big plays in winning this game. And I thought
that Lamar Jackson in this offense made some clutch plays
in the fourth quarter to help, you know, seal this
comeback win.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
Yeah, I think you want to The main thing for me,
I think you want what that you'd want to see
moving forward is more success inside the zone. That's just
been something that's been that like when you get down there,
you need to be able to punch it in and
because that's where games can be won and lost and
ultimately didn't hurt the Ravens today. And and yeah, to
your point, like the big play was their friend, the
big play to say Flowers or forty five yard completion,

(17:17):
fifty plus yard run by Derek Henry, which I'll give
you credit for. Listeners will remember you you predicted this
coming into this game that Henry was going to have
a fifty plus yarder and I joked coming out of
that that clearly is gonna have a fifty year fifty
plus yard touchdown. You said, well, just a fifty plus yarder.
I was trying to manifest a touchdown. But I give
you credit. So you called that one. You called a

(17:37):
fifty yard run for Derrick Henry.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Chris Chris Wells.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Chris Wells emailed us at the lounge at Ravens NFL
dot net.

Speaker 4 (17:44):
He said, I called it. He gave me my product.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yet I give him to you. I'm giving them to you.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
I'm gonna now, I'm just gonna becoming predictions.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Yeah, what else you got? Can you predict a Super Bowl?
I want you to predict that.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Look for the next game. I'll have it all right,
I'll have my prediction. Don't worry.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
But yeah, like that was huge and also by way,
a kind of an underrated piece. When Henry scored his
first touchdown. I want to give him some credit to
say Flowers at the goal line for helping pull and
push Henry across the line there. Like Zay Flowers not
the biggest guy out there, but he helped.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
He helped Henry finish.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
The job at the goal line. And obviously that was
a huge moment. So credit to Zay for helping finish
the job there.

Speaker 4 (18:22):
Yep, it was.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
It was a tough day overall for Lamar Jackson. The
passing game really didn't get going. Lamar was fourteen to
twenty five for one hundred and ninety three yards and
two interceptions. His quarterback rating of forty seven point six
is actually his lowest since twenty twenty one, in a
game also against the Browns. So this is the defense
that can give you troubles, and you know, it's a
feast for famine defense and there you're sometimes gonna crack

(18:46):
him for big plays like the Ravens did, and sometimes
it's gonna be tough sledding. And I credit to Lamar
hit d Hot for that eleven yard or rate before
the hurricane touchdown.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
That was a huge play.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Just to get it to a manageable situation. And uh,
and then some big throws to Zay Flowers in the
drive before that. The Ravens scored on three straight offensive
drives in the fourth quarter, two field goals in a touchdown.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
That was big time.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
And that was a game.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
So they got it done when it mattered. That was
the game.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
And I asked them are basically after the game, like
what what is this? What does this win show about
this team and what you're able to do? And he said,
we knew what kind of game this was gonna be.
And I think there is something to be said for
knowing how to win tough games and win ugly when
you need it. And like I said off the top,
the end of the day, like you want to play
your best, you want it to look pretty, but what's
most important is that you're winning.

Speaker 4 (19:36):
And the Ravens, you know, it's never gonna look pretty.
Inclean Cleveland ain't a pretty spot. Whoa, whoa, it ain't for.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
It's the weather's ugly and the football offen matches it.

Speaker 4 (19:49):
And so you just go, you go there and you
get a win.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
And that's what the Ravens were able to do today.
So huge win.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
The Ravens are five and five, they've won four straight games,
and the New York Jets are coming to town next week,
so huge moment for the Ravens to win the fourth
straight game, third straight on the road. And this team
is back to even. As John Harbaugh said, their heads
out of the water and they're going to try to
keep working on that turnaround moving forward. So as always,
