Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into the Lounge presented by DraftKings. I'm Ryan Mink
here with Garrett Downing following the ravens twenty four to
zero Row shutout win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Huge win
for the Ravens to pull them back to seven and seven,
keep them very much alive in the AFC North Chase,
(00:22):
as well as their first shutout since twenty eighteen and
the first shut the first shutout of Joe Burrow's career.
It was a dominant, dominant defensive day for them. No
out there, Garrett.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, this was a big, big time win for the Ravens. Obviously,
from a standing standpoint, the Ravens were in about as
close to a must win situation as you could find
yourself in and they were able to come out of
Cincinnati with a victory. I also was really encouraged because
this was the best game the Ravens had played all season.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
John Harbaugh said that after the game, and it felt
that way watching it. The defense was lights out. It
was easily the best game that the defense is played.
But from an overall standpoint, it was complimentary football, and
like this is kind of what you wanted to see.
You want to win. Of course, you want to win
by any means necessary. That's first and foremost. But you
also want to see the Ravens at this point of
(01:16):
the season when you're trying to claw your way into
the playoffs. You want to see them putting things together
and playing at a level that it's going to take
to get into the playoffs and then maybe win a
game or two or more if you get there. Like
that's you want them to be able to put things
together and play at the level that's necessary going into
the postseason. And they showed that today and it was
(01:38):
really encouraging.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah it was. It was their best game of the
season and their biggest win of the season and really
the first time that they've played complimentary football in a
long long time. And yeah, I mean this was a
team that looks like, oh yeah, this could definitely be
a playoff team. This is the formula right here. Dominant
defensive day, got the run game going. I mean ran
(02:02):
for one hundred and eighty nine yards. Efficient day through
the air. You're not gonna throw the ball a whole
lot when it's the coldest game in Ravens history, but
efficient day for Lamar Jackson throws two touchdowns. It's his
first game throwing multiple touchdowns since the Miami victory. These
are the Ravens that we've been waiting for really all
year long, and and sure like it could have been
(02:24):
even better offensively they were. You know, there's some gafs
early on in this game, but gosh, you couldn't ask
for a better defensive performance than the Ravens had today.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, not only did they shut out the Bengals, the
Raves also scorts that they would have won the game
if the defense, the offense never took the field.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
You know, the Ravens defense outscored Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, like it's it's that it sounds crazy when you
say it out loud, but that's how it went today.
And that just speaks to like the level that this
defense was playing at. And we all felt like coming
into the season and the defense has got has a
lot of pieces and there, and they have a lot
of talent, and then early on it was rocky and
(03:05):
then they started to figure it out, but you still
kind of wonder, how's it going to be when you're
going up against really good quarterbacks and they lost two
straight games and the defense over the last two games
against against Cincinnati on Thanksgiving and then last week against
Pittsburgh was not as good as it was the previous month,
and so you're like, Okay, what is this defense and
this kind of performance against one of the best offenses
(03:27):
in football when Joe Burrow is healthy. Like, make no
bones about it, the Bengals are a high octane unit
when Joe Burrow was healthy, and to hold them without
a point at home is a really remarkable thing for
this group and they have reason to be excited about that.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, I mean the Bengals scored thirty four points last
week against the Buffalo Bills, thirty two against the Ravens
the previous week twenty you know, I mean like they
with Joe Burrow, they put up over thirty both games,
and they were one of the best offenses in the
league before he went down early this season. So yeah,
this is a really talented offense. They didn't have t Higgins,
(04:06):
but they have plenty of offensive firepower, and for the
Ravens to just totally put the handcuffs on him, it
was an impressive performance. Joe Burrow went twenty five of
thirty nine for two hundred and twenty five yards, zero touchdowns,
two interceptions. He was sacked three times. After the game,
Joe Burrow said that this is one of the worst
(04:26):
games he's ever played in his career. The Ravens had
a whole lot to do with that, you know, consistently
taking away the deep part of the field. Really they
did not have much of anything deep down the field.
Jamar Chase won thirty four yard kind of catch and
run after Joe Burrow escaped pressure, but that was it.
No other plays over twenty yards for the Bengals, and
(04:50):
the Ravens really kind of kept a lid on them,
tackled really well, got pressure up front, and then got
some key interceptions.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, what I really liked about this defensive showing it's
two things to me. The first is that it wasn't
just like man that was a great game by the
secondary or that was a great game by the pass
rush individually. It was collective, like they kept the lid
on the big plays. They didn't allow anything deep, and
they were also getting after the quarterback. They were pressuring him,
they were hitting him, they were making him uncomfortable. So
(05:17):
you talk about coverage and pass rush marrying together, that's
what we saw today. In this game, both those units
were working in tandem. And then the other part that
I really liked is man this defense stood up in
big moments throughout the entire game. You just go through it.
It wasn't just like it was. It was dominant, but
it wasn't. They also had some clutch moments that if
(05:40):
they go the other way then it could be a
different result. I'll run through with some of them. Tavius Robinson,
welcome back. He gets the sack in the first quarter
to force them out of field goal range. They had
a punt, the interception by Marlon Humphrey. The Bengals are
driving on that play on the raven side of the field.
They're moving, Marlon comes up with the interception. Then, of
course the pick six in the four quarter, which was
(06:01):
the highlight of the day. Kylevnoi picks it, pitches it
to a Lohi Gillman, who does the rest. That came
when the Bengals were driving trying to mount a late comeback.
So and then you get a fourth down stop. You
have two turnovers on down, you get a fourth down
stop to end the game.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
There they were three of five. They got two fourth
down stops the Ravens did they had won earlier in
the game as well. That was a huge Bengals kind
of went for it when they had to get something
going offensively and the Ravens got to stop. The Ravens
held the Bengals a three of fifteen on third down.
That's incredible and that was a huge focus that we
heard from Zach Orr coming into this game, especially after
(06:40):
Bengals had so much success two weeks ago on third down.
In the second half of that game, Joe Burrow threw
two touchdown passes on third and nine and to so
to go three of fifteen. That was really a huge part.
But you mentioned it the pick six, which I think
we should call the pitch six, and the Ravens, I
(07:01):
mean Ed Reid is smiling somewhere after that one because
this was a page out of his playbook. Like you said,
Tavius Robinson got the pressure up the middle. Kyle van
Noy picks off kind of a floating pass at the
five yard line. He takes it eleven yards and then
hands it off to a Lowhi Goiman. Nice handoff on
(07:23):
that Alohi Gilman takes it eighty four yards. The rest
of the way, so it's not collectively a ninety five
yard intercession return for a touchdown and comes two days
after Ed Reid visited the Ravens at practice, spoke to
the defense, spoke the entire team of practice. Maybe does
Ed Reid? How much credit does the goat deserve for
(07:46):
this one?
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Gar Well. Marlon Humphrey actually said after the game that
the Ravens practiced so hard on Friday that he was
sore on Saturday, and he credited Ed Reid in part
for and being out there practice, watching practice, speaking to
the defense of the team as part of the enthusiasm
and the reason for that. So he brought some energy.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
I will I will say this. I will say this, No,
no shade. The Ed I was there on Friday, said
what up? It was great? Every my favorite player well
known uh. Ed did not stay out at practice very long.
It was extremely cold. Harves paused the practice early on
and called up the whole team so come talk and
then and then that was the end of it. It
(08:26):
was like, you know, I'm retired. I don't need to
be out here on this field. But today, no, no,
but but he did. He did talk to the entire
defense in defensive meetings and and I talked to a
few guys on Friday on the locker room, and they
said it was a really good message about being there
for your teammates on and off the field and keeping
the standards standard, and and you know, I think that
(08:47):
guys definitely were inspired by hearing from d Reid.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yeah, I don't think it was just like lip service
where you have a former player come by, you shake
some hands and keep it moving. It felt like it
served as a source of motivation. And he was played
with edge like you saw that today, And that was
one of the things that I liked from this defense.
There was a bunch of guys that seemed to have
kind of a chip on their shoulder. Draymond Jones, he's
been that way since he arrived. He was getting getting
(09:12):
into it with Joe Burrow at times in this game,
and John back and forth with him, and Alohi Gilman.
He plays with that same type of edge, And so
I thought.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
The Travis Jones, Travis Jones is a monster out there
today his first game back. Yeah, they were mixing it up.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
It felt like they just they kind of came with
a point to prove, and multiple players said after the game,
like they were ticked off about losing to that game
on Thanksgiving, just felt like they shouldn't have lost it,
and this was much more representative of how they felt
like these teams should match up. And they played like
they had a point to prove today and they did that.
And going back real quick to the pitch play, John
(09:51):
Harriwad joked about the fact that when ed was here,
of course everyone knows that Edery was famous for pitching
the ball lateral in it whenever he would come up
with an interception, that there was a list in place
that certain players had had pitch rights and if you
were the caliber of of Ed Reed or maybe a
few other guys, you had the clearance to pitch it.
(10:14):
And Kyle van Noy is now officially on that list
now after the play today. So I don't know if
he was or not, but I don't.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Think he was on the list before, but you know
it was he is now right now. Maybe it was
because he's not on the or wasn't on the list.
That's why he handed it off, you know it It
was the safest pitch that you could have. It was
the handoff pitch.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah, that's true Ed Ed would be a little bit
reckless of some of his pitches across the field.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Ed's would travel ten fifteen yards. The one in Carolinas
Dwan Landry from pick six was insane, insane, and I'm
not sure that Ed had full clearance at all times
on his pitch. Were There were many pitches that Ed
made that I'm sure Harves and other coaches that Ed
had over the years were saying, what are you doing?
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah, Well, in all honesty, ALOHI Gilman actually said he
was yelling to Kyle Vanoy to have him pitch it
because and it was it was like we're joking about it,
and it's funny whenever you see a lateral, especially given
Ed Reid in the Ravens history and all that. But
it actually was a really smart play because, uh, he
give it. He gives it to Gilman, who's obviously a
faster player, and then he broke out into open grass
(11:25):
and took it the rest of the way. Like it
was a smart play for van Ney. I don't think
he was going to take it back ninety yards, so
we allowed Gilman to go do the rest. It was
it was like we can joke about it, but it
was also a really smart play by Van Noy and
then a great play by Gilman to take it to.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
The house, and that pretty much ice the game.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, that was it.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
And what, by the way, was the coldest game in
Raven's history. Uh? And and just a bone chiller. I
mean you talk about it was already iceed, the game
was already iceed.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
It was well, it was ice before it even started
and it was pre iced.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
But that how do you ice the ice? I don't
even know. I don't know what that's called. But Draymond
Jones did talk his talk after the game and said
it was too cold for the Bengals, wasn't too cold
for the Ravens defense. Yeah, but revenge is a dish
best served.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Going how many other punchs Like yeah, And honestly, like
that's part of the reason I've I'm really encouraged by
this game because like that, that type of those type
of weather conditions have a factor on how the game
is played and how guys feel. And you saw it
at times even even like Zay Flowers had a couple
(12:34):
of drops today, and I think that the cole was
definitely part of the reason for that, And like that
type of weather has an impact on the game. And
for the Ravens to go on the road play in
Cincinnati against this team, like the Bengals had, they were
very long. Their odds of making the playoffs were very long,
but they weren't completely out of it. And basically this
was kind of a now they are. This was a
(12:54):
last ditch effort for them to try to put together
some wins and keep any shred of hope alive and
the squashed that and so to get that win in
that type of cold game, I think really does say
something about this team well.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
And I think that you know, this was a team
that was one in five battle back and then you
get to you take two gut punches in a row,
you know, with home losses to AFC North rivals, and
now you're behind the Steelers and the standings and your
your playoff hopes took a pretty big shot last weekend.
And I think there were people who wondered, you know,
(13:30):
outside the Ravens building, how much fight does this team
have left at this point? Right? And you go into
the coldest game in team history. They're gonna show up
for this one? Right? How are they going to show up?
And The Ravens proved something in that regard today with
the way that they played. I thought, on both sides
of the ball, get you know, obviously the defense, but
(13:51):
I thought the offense too, you know, especially after you
get off to a little bit of a sluggish start,
to keep plugging away and make some plays the way
they did, I thought, and then run the ball on
the Bengals throat in the second half. I thought that
on both sides of the ball, and just collectively, Uh,
this team. This is a statement for this team that
they are not gonna go down this season without a fight.
(14:13):
And it's gonna and it's gonna be a fight to
the finish. Well.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
The Ravens are now seven and seven with three games
left to play. They go they welcome the New England
Patriots to town on Sunday Night football next week. Then
they go on the road play the Green Bay Packers
on a Saturday night. Gonna be cold there. Ravens are
getting ready for a cold stretch here Sunday night football
in Baltimore than Saturday night in Green Bay. Then they
close out the season in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
I think that might be a night game too, That
could be flex too. Wouldn't surprise me.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Potential, especially if it's if it's a winning get in situation,
which obviously the Raves are hoping it.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
For the AFC North Crown. Yes, would not surprise me.
I mean, the Patriots just lost there. They lost the
Bills today, snapped their ten game winning streak, and so
it's it's it's gonna be very interesting. I'm putting on
my Miami Dolphins hat for Monday Night Football. The Dolphins
winners of four straight going against the Pittsburgh Steelers, so
Ravens are very much in the hunt. They could be
(15:07):
tied with the Steelers by the end of this weekend
long weekend. But before we look too far ahead, I
do want to talk more about the offense. Let's take
a break. We're gonna come back talk about the offensive
performance for the Ravens today as well as some injury
updates following the Ravens win.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
You're listening to the last podcast We're coming to you
from the Seakeek Studio. We want to mention our partners
at Draft Kings Sportsbook. They are an official sports betting
partner of the Baltimore Ravens. DraftKings Sportsbook. The Crown is yours,
so you mentioned it. The offense today, they got going
a little bit. I thought Lamar Jackson heated up. He
said after the game that he continues to feel better.
(15:43):
He looked at I think he's moving better certainly than
he was when he first came back from the hamstring injury.
Wasn't a monster game, but it was a generally efficient game,
and the Ravens definitely leaned on that ground game in
the second half. Lamore finished eight of twelve one hundred
and fifty yards of the air, two touchdowns interception. The
interception not has followed at all, just went off Ja
Flowers hands. The Ravens had one hundred and eighty nine
(16:05):
yards on the ground. Derek Hennery had one hundred of
them in average nine point one yards per carry YEP.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
And I thought made big time plays in big situations
for the Ravens offense. Lamar Jackson did a great job
of checking at the line of scrimmage to the touchdown
to Rashina Lee in the first half that got the
Ravens on the board. Second it was the scoreless first quarter,
but late in the late in the second quarter they
get that thirty yard touchdown to rashin a Lee and
(16:31):
a nice job by Lamar Jackson. He said, it was
you know, played these guys two weeks ago. That helped,
and then just watched a lot of film this week
and saw that on film, checked into the right play
and really caught the Bengals in a blitz for what
was essentially a walk in touchdown. Also kudos to Rashina Lee,
first career touchdown for him.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Yeah, that was big. I think that that's one of
those things when you talk about Lamar in his kind
of mastery of the game. We see the highlight reel plays,
those are those are easy to sp but I think
when you really when he's at his best, he's dissecting
defenses and making these kinds of checks and decisions at
the line of scrimmage to basically get your running back,
(17:11):
you know, a pretty easy touchdown once he has the
ball in his hands. So really well done by Lamar
and then and then Machine for finishing the job. But yeah,
that was that was nice. And then the big thing
for me, like kind of the turning point of this
game was the drive that the Raves put together right
before halftime when they get that ball back in that situation,
I'm kind of thinking, just go get three, Just try
(17:32):
to get a line up a decently a decent field
goal opportunity here for Tyler Loop and go into the
locker room up ten to nothing. That's what my mind
is thinking. Instead, they make quick work of it. Really
tough catch by Zave Flowers uh where he took a hit,
still made a tough catch. And then a few plays
later he gets into the end zone on the perfect
(17:52):
ball from Lamar. Just put it on the money. Zay
got open, did the rest. But man, you can't place
the ball any better than them on that throat.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
That was a straight dime. This is a dime by Lamar,
And honestly, you know, the defensive performance is awesome. But
what we've been saying the past couple of weeks several weeks,
is if this team's gonna go anywhere, if they're gonna
make the playoffs, and if they're gonna achieve their goals
in the playoffs, they need Lamar Jackson playing at the
top of his game. He needs to be playing really well.
(18:23):
And you know, it's it's been a tough stretch for Lamar. Obviously,
injuries have played a certainly a factor in that to
what degree we will never know, you know, but he's
been missing practice time, hasn't practiced fully in five weeks,
and he just hasn't looked like himself. And of course
the protection has been part of that issue. He's been
(18:43):
missing too many throws in part because of some of
those other factors probably, and so it's just been some
tough sledding. Another snow joke, another cold joke there. Well,
that was good will that one in there. But you know,
to see Lamar play the way he did today, I
thought is a really encouraging sign for this team because
(19:03):
that's what they're gonna need. As much as I agree
with the approach of the Ravens, you know, even from
the start, it was a run heavy approach for Todd
Munkin in this offense. You know, they ran the ball
twenty four times through it only twelve, so two to
one ratio there running to passing, and I think, especially
in a cold weather game like this, that's the right
(19:24):
formula and it could be moving forward. I'll tell you,
it ain't gonna be warm in Green Bay, so it
probably ain't gonna be warm in Pittsburgh in January. So
you know, but with that said, even if they're gonna
continue to run the ball and they have to run
it well, they need Lamar Jackson to play well. And
seeing him play the way he did today, I thought
(19:44):
was really encouraging. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
I think actually the last two games for him, he's
he's looked more and more like himself, the way that
he's moving, even the Thanksgiving game like he just had.
If you go back over the last three games and
you look at them in totality, yes, the Ravens lost.
They lost to the Bengals first time around, they lost
(20:07):
to the Steelers, but obviously we don't need to rehash
them all, Like there were some key moments in those
games that could have easily gone the other direction with
touchdowns on the board for the Ravens. Then you're looking
at much different stats and a much different standings picture
for the Ravens. And so like they've been right there,
and I'm encouraged by what I saw from Lamar. The
interesting thing is we kind of discover the secret sauce.
(20:30):
I think Lamar let the cat out of the bag
after the game. The secret to his success in this
game was showing up late to the airport, he said.
He said he was about fifteen minutes late to the airport,
got caught up in traffic, and whenever he's been late
to the airport, he's ended up having a great game.
So he felt like when he showed up late, planes waiting,
(20:52):
planes still there, did not take off. I think it's
pretty safe to say they're gonna make sure Lamar's on
the flight before they take off. But once they realized
that he was good and he got on the plane,
he felt like he was gonna be in store for
a nice day because you know, he believes in that.
In that I don't know, good luck charm. I guess
being late to the airport, good luck charm who are known?
Speaker 1 (21:09):
Well? You know me, Garret, I like to cut it
close sometimes, and but I don't think they'd hold the
plane for me. They see me running down the tarmac there,
go ahead, come on, yeah, you would.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
You would watch the plane take off as you're trying
to flag down there.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Ya, they'd say At the front desk, they'd say, yeah, Mink,
Mink just showed up. He's on his way, go ahead, yep.
So yeah, hey, if whatever it tasts, you know, I
think we're willing gate. John Harbaal did say it was
it was not only Lamar, there were several players, and
that they got caught up from the Army Navy game
(21:47):
and secret Service got it kind of got ensnared in
all the additional security around that game. And uh so
Lamar was not the only one. But hey, hey, if
we're taking off fifteen minutes because Lamar and if that
SoRs a great game, sure then I'll take it whatever
it takes by any means necessary.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Then the other thing too, just for the for the offense,
like it was good to see the ground game, especially
in that second half get rolling Deric Henry. He only
had eleven carries. The offense didn't have that many plays.
That was the weird thing. And Lamar even said that
after the game, like just didn't feel like they were
on the field all that much. Long drives by both teams.
The Bengals were kind of methodical, especially in the first half.
It moving slowly down the field. So Henry only gets
(22:30):
eleven carries but made the most of them one hundred
yards to average nine point one. Like I mentioned, and
then Keithon Mitchell really good. Keithon Mitchell went down and
last week's game against the Steelers in your wondering is
this gonna be a bad knee injury again or anything
like that, and he ended up obviously being okay. Looked
good today, showed no ill effects, eight for sixty six
with an eight point three yards per carry average for him,
(22:51):
and then Lamar had two carries for twenty six yards.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I'm okay with not a whole lot of plays with
the offense as long as it means a you're doing
well with the plays you have, which the Ravens average
seven point nine yards per play, which is awesome. And
now you know they're going against the league's worst defense,
and so take that for what it is. But they
did a whole lot better in this game than they
(23:13):
did the last one because of point number two. I'm
okay with not a whole lot offensive plays when you're
not turning the ball over. Right, the Ravens didn't have
enough offensive plays on Thanksgiving because they have five turnovers
that they would have had a whole lot more plays,
a whole lot more yards than a whole lot more
points that they not turned the ball over only one
turnover today, So you play a clean game on offense
(23:35):
and your averaging seven point nine per play you're gonna
have a lot of wins.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Yep. Now, the other note coming out of this game
is injuries, because the number of guys went down of
the course of the game. The most notable, looks like
from a significant standpoint is Teddy Buchanan. He left the
game with a knee injury and no official update, but
John Harball said after the game it doesn't look good,
(23:59):
So we're gonna have some more more information on that non.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
Contact, non contact injury. Unfortunately running down on punt coverage,
so that that's a really tough break for him. I mean,
Teddy is a He's second on the team in tackles
to ro Kwan Smith started the vast majority of the season.
Uh just for a fourth round pick. I mean, he's
been unbelievable. He's had a really great rookie season. Fingers
(24:26):
crossed that that tests turn out to be more positive
than than feared here, but you know, a tough break
for him if not. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
The other one is Cheetoh Woozie. He left with a
foot injury. Again, no declarative information on that. The Ravens
are going to get that looked at and they should
have more information on Monday, hopefully, that's not something that
that lingers because you know the Ravens they want to
have all their their corners healthy here going into the
final stretch, and it would be it would be tough
to lose Cheeto. He's been playing really good football for
(24:56):
this team. It was a big part of the reason
that the defense uh had as strong of a day
as it did. He broke up a pass on that
fourth down play earlier in the game, so you hopefully
that's not something that lingers for him. Ronnie Stanley left
the game at one point and whenever you see him
go down, you get nervous. But John Harbaugh did say
on that one it doesn't look to be anything too serious,
(25:17):
so should be okay with Ronnie. And then again, we'll
have more declarative updates on Cheeto and Teddy Buchanan tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Absolutely so big win for the Ravens. As we mentioned,
more work to be done, you know, I mean Lamar
Jackson was he was not jumping for joy, you know,
going crazy after this win, said, you know, we got
better today. But the Ravens still have a lot more
work to do in this AFC North race and still
a tough schedule ahead. But encouraging signs from this team
(25:48):
all the way around. I think you can win with
a defense playing this well for sure, and the offense
I thought it was its best game in a while.
Good vibes coming out of Cincinnati, best win of the season.
