Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome into the lounge presented by DraftKings. I am my
mink here with Garrett Downing. We're thrilled to announce a
three year extension with nose tackle Travis Jones. The Ravens
have locked up the future of one of the best
ascending young defensive tackles in this league. Travis was entering
well is in the final year of his contract, was
(00:26):
a pending free agent, and he would have been one
of the top free agents on the market, potentially the
tippy top defensive lineman. And so the Ravens get this
deal done three years with Travis Jones for reported forty
and a half million dollars. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter,
this is an exciting deal to get done as the
Ravens continue to really kind of secure the future.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Now, it's been a busy couple of weeks here for
Eric Tacosta in the Ravens front office. Last week it
was Mark Andrews getting the contract extension. Now it's Travis Jones,
and we all knew that, like this offseason is a
pretty pivotal offseason for the Ravens given a lot of
the contracts and the pending free agents that they have
Mark and Travis being maybe at the top of that list,
(01:08):
and the ability to work out extensions with the two
of them before the season even ends, I think secures
the core here. And something that we've heard from Eric
to Costa like over and over again is that we
want to be a team where the windows always open.
We want to be a team that is always competitive
and not going all in one year and that's it.
And I think that keeping a player like Travis Jones
(01:30):
allows you to have a core member of your defensive
front in place at a good price, that's a good
price for the rest of the season in three more years.
I think it's a quality move for the Ravens.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
And Travis is a very unique player, right. Every time
we've had numerous players on the Ravens defensive line and
offensive lines come on the lounge here and you often
anytime you ask them about Travis Jones, they just rave
about this guy and how special he is and just
how strong he is and quick for being so big,
(02:07):
and yeah, you can't find a guy a person in
this building to say anything negative about big draft. Yeah,
I mean, I think that even before the season started,
defensive line coach Dennis Johnson said he expects every time
that he's on the field for Big Travis to be
the best player on the field. So that was like, WHOA, Yeah, Okay,
that kind of shows you the belief that they have
(02:29):
in Travis Jones, and I know his teammates feel very
much the same way that he is a special, special guy.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Well to that point, it reminds me a little bit
of some of the conversation that we heard with Nobdy
Mattabike earlier in his career. So like early his career,
guys would consistently point to him. It's like he's a
breakout candidate. He's a guy that's going to really emerge.
He's so good, he does so many things that is
going to allow him to flourish. And then that ultimately
happened with him, and it took a little bit of
time for him to really break out, but then he
(02:57):
ultimately did. And it's kind of with Travis Jones. I
think we've been hearing for players talk behind the scenes
and going into each season about this is a guy
that you should watch and he's and he's.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Like the breakout player vote for two straight years.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, Like he has that type of ability and I
think he's just really established himself here and I think
that that is a testament to him. Like that's the
thing that the thing and honestly stands out to me
about Travis Jones is he's a third round pick out
of Yukon and when when he arrived here, like I
would say, pretty raw player, and that team was like
(03:31):
his team at Yukon, which is not a good team.
They weren't good and he had to It was a
big leap for him going from that level to playing
in the EDIT, playing in the NFL, and I think
that he handled all that really well and to be
rewarded now with this contract extension is a testament to
the work that he's put in coming from you know,
(03:52):
a program that was was not at a good point
when he got to the NFL, and for him to
be able to come continue to develop, establish himself and
now earn a contract, it just speaks to him in
his hard work when I think you and honestly in
the scouting process too, Like I give the Ravens scouts
a lot of a lot of credit for finding him.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Not a whole lot of big time prospects coming out
of Yukon, especially.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
That season, I don't. I honestly don't know if they
want a game his last season there, I don't think
they did. Yeah, I think they were winless. And and
so for the scouts to be able to say, all right,
we're watching the interior defensive line play on a winless
Yukon team and that guy is something special I think
speaks to the really quality scouting process of the Ravens
go through.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, and just like we talked about Mark Andrews and
what that extension said about him not only as a
player but as a Raven and all that goes into that,
a lot of that applies to Travis Jones too. You're
not going to find a guy who spends more time
in this building in the off season than Travis Jones. Yeah,
he was here the whole time, like we were getting
(04:54):
whatever lunch in April.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
There's big draft, he's in line, you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (04:59):
And like that dude works And so that's part of it,
I think too. Just playing through injuries the past couple
of years, he's had ankle and knees that he's really
continued to play through and you would see his numbers,
his numbers would be better if it weren't for those
kind of injuries, which, hey, that's part of being a
defensive lineman and a nose tackle in this league, Like
(05:20):
you're gonna get banged up a little bit. But credit
to Travis, he's played through that a lot. And for
that reason, I think that's also part of the reason
why you see an even brighter future for Travis Jones. Like,
if this guy can put together a fully healthy season,
it's gonna be kind of it's gonna be crazy. And
then you also look at then the tape and you know, Travis,
(05:44):
you brought up Nomdy. Travis is never going to put
up the numbers, the sack numbers that Nomdy did you
know before he got his extension. But that's not the
position he plays. He's a different player, but he does
so many different things. I mean, it's unheard of for
a nose tack player like Travis Jones to be playing
sixty seven percent of their team's defensive snaps.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
That's that's crazy high.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
So like the different positions that the Ravens can use
him in.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
I know he's listened as a nose.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Tackle, but he can play really multiple spots on the
defensive line. So he offers that versatility and then to
be able to not only be a run stuffer but
also be like, you know what, he's going to be
our pass rusher too, as the news as that interior guy,
like we feel confident enough and not just is he
ain't a speed rusher or whatever, but like to collapse
(06:33):
the pocket, which is incredibly important in today's NFL, and
not allowing quarterbacks to step up in the pocket and
give him those running lanes to collapse the pocket, apply
pressure and all those things like Travis does all that
as well, and so on and off the field, I
think this is a player that when you watch the
tape and whatnot, I think you see an even better
(06:53):
player than the numbers suggests.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Well to the point about the number, so this year
he has one and a half sacks, hees thirty four
to tackle, six tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, Like
he's not a double digit sack guy. That's not what
he's asked to do, and that's just not the game
that he plays. But when you look at the Ravens history,
this has been a team that has first and foremost,
like I know, it's the game has changed and it's
(07:16):
much more of a passing driven league, but the Ravens
firmly believe that in order to be a good defense,
you have to stop the run. And Travis Jones is
probably the most important.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Guys in this league either.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, in today's I think Travis is probably at the
top of the list of in terms of importance of
where that of who is responsible for stopping the run
on imposing offenses. It's a collective effort, but I would
put him right at the top thars list. And he
gobbles up double teams. And if you look at the
Ravens history, they have consistently had somebody in the middle
(07:47):
of that defense at nose tackle that can gobble up blockers,
stop the run and be that type of player there.
Brandon Williams was that guy. Aloid and Noo was a
little bit of everything I mean that he was. He
was a unicorn who could He provided some pass rush
as well, but man, he was such an important player
in the middle of that defense.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
I kind of hope that Travis evolves a little bit
more into being that kind of player. You know, big,
big athletic, talented dudes.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Like those are the even you go back if they
had Kelly Greg there for Tony, Sarah Goose all the
way back on the on the Super Bowl team, Sam
Adams on the Super Bowl team, like those those that
position that Michael Pierce like, they've invested in players at
that spot, and Travis Jones is another extension of that.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, I totally agree.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
I think also, you know, this speaks to Nomine Matabike
and we don't know what you know is going on
with his neck exactly. Head coach John Harball was asked
about that and said, you know, he can't really share
details on that. Nomin He's been out since early in
the season with that neck injury, and it's kind of
cloudy what his future looks like.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Anytime you hear neck, you're you get concerned. You know.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
John Harbaal said he's got a lot of stuff going on,
but he can't really share that.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
So if not you were to miss more time or
extended time.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Or whatever, like, this is a big deal to secure
the future of a piece, a very important piece on
that defensive line.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Yeah, like you want to have somebody as as an
anchor moving forward to that defensive front with nomy future
cloudy you have, I mean, you have Travis Jones but
if he if you didn't re sign him and he
left in free agency, there like that's got a big
hole right figuratively and literally in the in the middle
of your defense. And I don't think you really want
(09:29):
to be in that situation.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So yeah, I think I think that this is like
this is not one of those moves that's like a
major marquee signing that's like gonna lead Sports Center tonight,
Like that's not going to be the main topic. But
good teams are able to keep their quality ascending players.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
I'm sure there's a lot of gms around the league
who are hoping to get a defensive tackle this offseason,
you said, Dag Gummett. Yeah, like the Ravens brought him back,
man cross him off the list, like exactly. If you
look at a lot.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Of the different like early who are the top free agents,
Travis Jones is like one of the guys that's on
a lot of the top ten list. Yeah, so I
think I think teams around the league were looking at
him as a potential target this offseason. The Ravens were
able to keep him on an affordable deal, and that's
what you want. You want to be able to keep
your talented, ascending young players at a good price, signing
(10:19):
them early before he hits the market, maybe keeps the
bidding more down before he ends up getting out there
on the open market and everybody can start calling. And
I think it's a win for everybody. He gets his contract,
he gets the extension here before the seasons even over,
and the Ravens know they have long term stability at
that position.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
He gets to stay with the team that believed in him,
like your point, earlier guy out of Yukon and all
that stuff, like Ravens believed in him and made it,
drafted him in the third round. To your point, ESPN
ranked Travis jons is the eighth best pending free agent
going into this offseason. Number two Tyler Linderbaum. Yeah, number
(10:54):
nine Isaiah likely And so you know the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
So the work's not done. The Ravens have all guys
and we'll see.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
I mean, obviously, this shows how intent Eric to Coasa
is on getting ahead of some of these deals. With
that said, Eric coss was also very clear last offseason
when everybody saw this coming right that unfortunately we're going
to see good players playing for other teams.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
That's just the reality of it.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
You can't bring back everybody, but you try to bring
back as many as you can, and and he's getting
ahead ahead of the business.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Well, I think it also just shows that the quality
of that that draft class. That was the Kyle Hamilton
because we didn't mention him, but that was the Kyle
Hamilton Tyler Linderbaum draft class when Travis Jones was also
in so they extended Kyle before the season. That was
the that was the marquee piece of that huge piece,
and so they got that done. Linderbom's still out there,
so we'll see what ends up happening there. But Travis
(11:47):
Jones was the third round pick in that class and
so just an excellent draft top to bottom. Isaiah likely
also in that draft class, So an excellent class. It's
hard to keep all of those guys, especially likely with
the Mark Andrews deal done now, it's just gonna be
hard to keep all of them.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Jordan Stouts in that class, he's making a play for
a contract decision as well.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Yeah, it's it's a really good class, and so I
think the Ravens they clearly want to keep as many
of those guys as possible. And this also extends what
we've seen from DaCosta and wanting to get deals done
on the earlier end before guys even hit the free
agent market. I mean, Hamilton was super early. The first
opportunity they had with him.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
It was like because they had already picked up the
fifth year option.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
They already had two years left on his contract and
got that deal done, but they clearly wanted to just
not worry about that. And so that's the way the
Ravens like to do business in a perfect world. And man,
it's not who knows what else Eric Cocsta has up
his sleeve, because these moves have happened, and it's not
like there's been a lot of chatter around this, Like
this is something like the Ravens keep these things quiet
(12:47):
and then all of a sudden boom, Mark Andrews's extension,
Travis Jones extension, So who knows what else he's cooking up?
Speaker 1 (12:52):
The gear down extension exactly the most important one, right,
all right, Well, thank you for listening. As always, you
can reach us at the lounge at Ravens dot NFL
dot net. Congratulations with Travis Jones. We got to have
him on the lounge, Yes we do. Would love to
give a big travel on the lounge. He's kind of
a quieter guy. Yeah, let's the pads do the talking.
But we'll see if we can get him talking a
(13:13):
little bit here.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
For sure, for sure, and then again, of course, the
Ravens are playing the Cincinnati Bengals this week Sunday afternoon,
one o'clock, and as we talk about that game, we
did a full preview episode leading into that game. We
sat down with Nate Wigans, another ascending young talented player
on this defense, sat down with him earlier this week.
That episode dropped Thursday morning, So if you're listening to
this episode on the reaction to the Travis contract, make
(13:36):
sure you go back and check out the conversation with Nate.
Wiggans shared some insight into his development and what's allowed
him to really flourish this season, as well as a
conversation about the game coming up on Sunday in Cincinnati.
So make sure you check that out. You can listen
to it wherever you get your podcasts, and also watch
it on YouTube and the Ravens website and app. Thank
you so much for listening. We'll be back with you
